Ben’s light in dark times BY LUKE VOOGT GEELONG West’s Ben Collett has helped Light the Night since he was diagnosed with myelofibrosis in 2013. The 41-year-old has joined fellow Geelong leukaemia sufferers, their families and those left behind to light a lantern each year. “It’s just knowing that you’re not alone,” he said. “There are other people in the community with leukaemia and the support is there.” Ben received the bad news on 31 May, 2013. “It shouldn’t be a date I remember but it is,” he said. “Up until then I was pretty healthy. All of a sudden you get dealt something like that and it’s a kick in the guts.” Myelofibrosis is a bone marrow disorder and an uncommon type of leukaemia (blood cancer). It causes severe fatigue, weakens the body and its immune system and can lead to worse forms of leukaemia. “Basically all my bone marrow has scar tissue,” Ben said. But despite the disease the council arborist still enjoys “as normal a life as possible”. “The support I’ve been getting off management and my

workmates has been awesome.” So far, he has managed to avoid chemotherapy. “But eventually I will need massive chemo - my oncologist told me it could be 10 or 15 years until I need treatment,” he said. “I’ve just got to wait until I can get a bone marrow transplant.” Ben still runs and recently took on the MCG’s 7300 steps in the Stadium Stomp. “It was tough work but I finished it so that’s something to proud of,” he said. Ben has raised $1500 for Light the Night and credits much of the fund-raising to his sister and parents. “This year I’ve done better than what I have previously,” he said. “I wouldn’t be anywhere without my family I don’t think.” Light the Night takes place at Johnston Park on 7 October. Ben said those interested could donate by searching for his name at www. lightthenight.org.au “The night is so important. It raises money for new and better treatments, not for just my leukaemia, but all forms of leukaemia.”

Pleasing on the palate BY ELISSA FRIDAY “THE freshness is the biggest thing,” says Geelong Fresh Foods co-owner Carmel Gili. “We source all our products from over 150 Australian suppliers that we use,” she explains. A family-owned-and-operated gourmet grocery, fruit and vegetable store, Geelong Fresh Foods opened in 2005. The business offers an extensive range of continental groceries and organic produce. Carmel, who owns the store with her two brothers, sources local goods wherever possible, while also stocking imported food products. The store’s bakery includes products from Zeally Bay Sourdough, The Healthy Loaf, Noisette Bakery and more, Carmel says. “With 40 members of staff working at the store, some having worked there for 10 years, the business is very family orientated. “My brothers and I work here every day. Also, my sister-in-law, dad and cousin work here, too.” Geelong Fresh Foods’ regular customers travel from as far as Lorne and Ballarat, Carmel says.

“Our freshly baked Irrewarra Sourdough Bakery bread is popular, and the dips, cheeses, crackers and deli goods can make up great hampers. “Apart from that, our deli here includes locally cured cold meats, Australian and imported French, Dutch and Greek cheeses, which are also very popular.” Geelong Fresh Foods’ deli also stocks soft and blue cheeses, marinated fetta, olives, cured meats, all-natural dips, pates, roasted and marinated vegetables and more. But the store’s biggest sellers are its health food products, Carmel explains. “These are mainly the fermented vegetables and gluten-free, organic, dairyfree and vegan products, which customers really like,” she says. “There are also a range of the latest healthy super-foods kept on the shelf, too. “Geelong Fresh foods are always here to help with food ideas.” Geelong Fresh Foods also supports Barwon Valley Smallgoods, which uses traditional methods to make its products, Carmel says. Celebrity chef Miguel Maestre will be in the store for a cooking demonstration, food tasting and promotion of his products from 11.30am on 5 October, Carmel says. The demonstration will feature his paella kits, cheeses and cured meats, available at Geelong Fresh Foods. “People can come along and meet Miguel, watch his cooking demonstration and also taste some food,” Carmel says. Pet op shop has little paws BY JUSTIN FLYNN RSPCA Victoria is closing the doors of its Pakington Street Op Shop after 30 years. The branch will relocate to 227 Autumn Street on 6 October. The closing of the Pakington Street shop also marks the end of an era with the retirement of volunteer team leader Barb Dart, who has volunteered in the op shop for 28 years. Barb lives two streets away from the former building, but a chronic back condition and not driving anymore means she cannot continue to work at the Autumn Street branch. Barb said it was by pure chance that she came to work at the RSPCA. “It was back in 1988 and I was a very shy person and I was standing outside with my golden retriever and someone came outside to me and said 'you can come in if you like’ so I did,” she said. “I joined them and started working three days a week. It’s such a wonderful, happy place and you’re doing something so worthy and I made such great friendships.” Barb said her time at the RSPCA had taught her many things.

“Animals give you unconditional love,” she said. “Just to know that you’ve helped innocent animals and also the people I met along the way - lovely staff, lovely atmosphere, that’s the thing I will miss. I was happy to go to work every day.” In the meantime Barb plans to catch up on some reading, get into her crafts and try to get out into the garden if her back will allow her. “Barb has not only been a wonderful team leader at the op shop,” RSPCA Victoria chief executive officer Dr Liz Walker said. “But she has also been a big supporter of the RSPCA Geelong Million Paws Walk events. I want to thank Barb for her dedication and for giving her time so generously, and I know we will continue to see her when she pops in to see the team at their new home. Our op shops wouldn’t function without our amazing volunteers and we are incredibly grateful to them,” Dr Walker said. Michael always wanted an opportunity to involve himself in community support. “I’m in my early thirties, married to a Geelong girl, I’m working for myself and giving back to the community. “Also, we have a collection bin in our truck for GAR

donations, so when we visit clients for jobs and they have blankets or food they would like to donate we can just put them into our collection bin there and then to give to GAR. “It helps that we have a collection bin, as it makes it easy and handy for people while we’re there if they have things they want to donate. “We’ve already filled one bin up,” Michael says cheerfully.

WITH nearly 20 years of experience as an electrician under his belt, Complete Electrical Services Geelong owner Michael Barry still loves his work. “It’s great because you can meet, say, three different people a day on a site and they’re all lovely,” Michael says. Complete Electrical Services Geelong began trading five years ago. “Our most common installations are domestic jobs in people’s homes,” Michael says. “For example, television points, lights, fans, heaters ... whatever gets powered inside a house.” Just over a month ago Complete Electrical Services Geelong paired up with GAR (Geelong Animal Rescue), a registered not-for-profit organisation based in Geelong. Five per cent of every Complete Electrical Services Geelong invoice is directly donated to GAR, a charity that rehabilitates neglected, abandoned and unwanted cats and dogs. The charity’s ultimate goal is to re-home GAR animals with loving ‘forever’ families, Michael explains. GAR operates via a fostercaring system from within the homes of over 100 of its unpaid volunteers.

Helping home dreams come true BY ELISSA FRIDAY MARITA Gilmour is Pakington Street’s specialist in home loans and finance after 35-plus years in the industry. “Buying a house doesn’t have to be a daunting or difficult experience,” says the principal of Geelong West’s RAMS Home Loans Centre. “Sometimes you just need a boost and to know what steps to take to get started. “Buying a home, particularly your first, should be an exciting time in your life.” Marita says she strives to make the purchasing process “hassle-free and as easy as

possible”. “There’s something unique about buying your first home that makes a safety-first attitude a good one,” she advises. Marita knows that issues such as finding a house in the right location, budget constraints and choosing the right loan can be barriers to purchasing property. Marita has seven simple steps to home ownership: · First is deciding to buy; making the decision to leave the rental treadmill and into the property market. · Then it’s time to work out how much you can afford to spend, so using a budget

planner can help to take the guesswork out of the process,” Marita says. · Second is finding a loan. “With so much competition in the market it can be difficult to know where to look. Begin by talking to a home loan specialist, as they can work out how much you’ll be able to borrow.” · Third relates to the “real cost of buying”, which covers all the various costs involved in buying, such as loan application charges, legal fees and stamp duty. · Fourth is identifying early the type of home wanted to make

the process faster. “Bear in mind that your new home could also act as an investment,” Marita says. · The fifth step is making an offer on a chosen property. “Ensure you have got formal approval for your home loan and had inspections carried out.” · Sixth is organising legal formalities for an accepted offer, including a conveyancing check, a contract exchange, a cooling-off period and a settlement date. · Last is moving in, which Marita says involves booking removalists with boxes packed and ready to go.

Pressed juices for all occasions Grub Guide’s Allira Potter this month visited The Bronx Pressed Jucies to experience a unique cold pressed juicy range in the heart of Geelong West. HEY foodies, Spring has sprung…..but it’s also brought a hell of a lot of rain with some flooding around town. The only bonus of it, is that my garden is looking very vibrant and green. I have managed to pick an endless supply of edible flowers which I have used on food. A lot has happened with us over the past month since we launched our photography business called she takes photos, which led us to our first job on Pako Street at King of the Castle. We got to photograph the whole spring menu which was ever so exciting for us as a first job. We have been as usual eating our way along Pako, but this month we got to try The Bronx Pressed Juices a newly established pressed juice company in Geelong located in Preston Street, Geelong west. This cool space is home to eight different types of pressed juices, salads and other healthy nourishing on-the-go snacks. The one thing that really grabs my attention with the Bronx is the way they support local farmers they try and source as local as possible and as fresh as possible. Their juices are locally made and are organic with no nasties. The Bronx has cleanse packs which you can order online or pick up in store. You can pick your own juices or get the signature juice cleanse pack. Cleanses can be two, three or five-day packs; each juice is jam-packed with goodness and nutritional value. On this occasion, we got to indulge in a one box which consisted of all the juices. They were all different and quite yummy. Just to name a few the box had one called Rolls Royce which was a greenbased pressed juice, the godfather which has charcoal and peppermint oil to help detoxify nasties on your inside, a coffeebased juice called daily grind to help wake your insides up in the morning. Each of the pressed juices have health benefits that range from boosting your immunity to being a great hangover cure which may come in handy after a big night out on the town. Allergies and hayfever. Nose running like a tap? Runny eyes and sneezing? Maybe an itchy throat as well? Hooray! Hay fever season is upon us once again. So what is causing these symptoms? It is likely you have an allergy, caused by pollen in the air around spring time, commonly known as hay fever. However some of us have allergies to animals, mould and food among many other possibilities. So is it time to get back onto the trusty antihistamine, whip out the nasal sprays and stock up on eye drops? A few things to keep in mind are that you may need to change your antihistamine regularly, as one that worked for you last season may not work as well this season. If nasal symptoms are your main worry then nasal sprays are far more effective than a tablet. The same goes for runny and itchy eyes, drops applied directly are more effective. There are heaps of different ones to choose from so make sure you get some advice from a pharmacist. Some other things you can try if you are not having any luck with the traditional treatments, or would like to try something a bit more natural are: 1. Concrete ideas in store A moment with business owner Dajana Dizdarevic from Mali and Wolf Briefly describe your business? Mali and Wolf is a concept store that aims to push the envelope when it comes to botanical art and design. It also doubles up as an art studio as all of our cement planters are made in store. In addition, we are plant enthusiasts who aim to collect and stock some of the world’s rarest and most interesting plants. Tell us about an interesting or rare plant that you have in the store? One of our favourite rare species of succulent to collect is the Pachypodium. It is a very adaptive house plant and will withstand a wide range of temperature and light changes, adjusting accordingly. Pachypodium means ‘thick foot’, referring to the large and swollen caudiciform stems that all members of this genus have. They not only have succulent stems, but most are heavily armed with thick, stiff spines on the caudex and branches. It may not be the prettiest of succulents

but we enjoy them for their quirky appearance. How did you come up with your business name? Our first two children’s nicknames were the inspiration for the name. Our poor third child missed out as he wasn’t conceived then. Do you make the products? If so, how and what materials do you use? Our entire Mali and Wolf collection is handmade. We predominately work with cement but we don’t pigeonhole ourselves, as we love to experiment with lots of materials. Have you always been creative when it comes to making things? I have always enjoyed art and design and have completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Ballarat. What is your most popular item? Our geometric cement planters always do well, and we love to pair them up with some interesting plants to complement the architectural aesthetic of the planter. What is your favourite plant to pot? I don’t have a specific favourite plant to pot but I thoroughly

enjoy playing with the more textural, wonky and characterful plants. Anything rare that has a sculptural feel is always fun. Are your products for outdoor or indoor use or both? We have a range to suit every individual need. The cement planters with the cacti and succulent plants are predominately designed to be indoors or under cover outdoors. They don’t need much watering and are susceptible to rotting if left in the direct rain. Are the pots and plants easy to maintain? Do you have any tips? We have a huge variety of plants, but our overall aim is to collect a variety that remain low maintenance and stay incredibly hardy. Even a black thumb will have a hard time killing our plants. The biggest tip I offer our customers in regard to our cacti range, is that it is almost always best to underwater than to over water them. As overwatering causes rotting, that is a deathsentence for your prickly little friend.
