Legal action By Aneeka Simonis ORGANISERS of the crime-fighting CCTV plan to virtually guard Lakeside estate are currently seeking legal advice from the state justice department. Shadow Minister for Crime Edward O’Donohue and Bass MP Brian Paynter last week held preliminary talks with organisers who will soon take their virtual security plan to Pakenham police. One person has already put their hand up to fund about half a dozen cameras covering each of the Pakenham estate’s entrances, with possibilities for community fundraising for the remaining cameras. More than 40 residents, including some from surrounding Pakenham estates including Heritage Springs, turned out to a community consultation about the innovative proposal dubbed Neighbourhood Watch for the 21st century. Under the $5000 plan, all entrances, exits, parks and roundabouts in the residential estate in Pakenham would be under 24 hour camera surveillance as part of the community-led and managed initiative. Cameras would be mounted on private property and residents would sponsor the bandwidth bill for the closed security surveillance system accessible to police via an encrypted tracking website. Plan instigator and Lakeside resident Giles Gibson said the surveillance proposal will hopefully discourage would-be thieves from targeting the estate and will help speed up police investigations when crimes occur. “It’ll be like putting a digital fence around Lakeside,” he said. Barry Plant Pakenham’s Nicola Parreira put her hand up to personally fund the first few high-definition day and night vision cameras. They are planned to be fitted at the
estate’s entrances and exits, virtually gating the residential zone. “I live and breathe Lakeside. It’s my core area and I want to be able to help. There’s been so much crime going on in the area lately,” she said. Cardinia police Inspector Shane Smith said he and other senior members at Pakenham police station will soon meet with organisers to discuss the proposal. “We are happy to work with the group. We are always looking for new, innovative ways to investigate crime,” Insp Smith said. Unlike most home surveillance systems, this proposal would see the camera face away from the owners’ property and toward public spaces. Organisers are currently seeking advice from the Department of Justice and Regulations’ Community Crime Prevention Unit around the privacy of the footage. In parliament on Tuesday 26 October, Mr O’Donohue asked Minister for Police Lisa Neville to facilitate a meeting between the department and organisers to “ensure the CCTV systems work in compliance with privacy laws and other statutory requirements.” Residents who offer up their property to host cameras will likely have to sign a privacy agreement prohibiting the release of CCTV captured images to anyone by police, Mr Gibson said. “We aren’t looking at a name and shame system. We don’t want that. We want a co-ordinated approach with police,” he said. More than a dozen Lakeside residents have volunteered to take part in the security proposal. Cameras can be colour-matched to residents’ property and will be no larger than a cigarette packet. Organisers outlined plans to apply for State Government grants to cover the cost of the project in addition to launching a crowdfunding site.

Barry Plant Pakenham has flagged its intention to possibly pour more funds into the plan. Police in Cardinia shire, Casey and Greater Dandenong began a public campaign for residents to register their private CCTV surveillance system with them earlier this year. Cardinia Shire Council is currently pushing for CCTV cameras to be installed at known crime hang-out, Bourke Park opposite Pakenham train station.
The proposed CCTV cameras will be small, and can be colourmatched to the home.

Revved up in the rain THOUSANDS of people flocked to the centre of Cranbourne on Saturday 22 October for the 2016 GP Run despite the wet weather. Motorcyclists and spectators braved the wild weather to participate in the 18th annual event that saw about a thousand riders leave Cranbourne headed for Phillip Island. Although many of the activities that were scheduled to accompany the motorbike wave-off were cancelled, the main event went ahead without a hitch. City of Casey Young Citizen of the Year Oliver Thomson waved the chequered flag that sent the bikes on their way and sang the national anthem for the crowd. The event was hosted by the City of Casey and delivered in partnership with Victoria Police and the Victorian Motorcycle Council. Sisters have trek on track By Alana Mitchelson PAKENHAM’S Heidi Austin and her walking team, the Blister Sisters, are four of 2000 trekkers preparing for this year’s Wild Women on Top Coastrek coastal charity walk. Having participated in last year’s 55 kilometre trek, Heidi could not help but rise to the challenge of ticking this year’s 60 km achievement off her Bucket List. The Blister Sisters have so far raised more than $2500 for the Fred Hollows Foundation to continue its fight to end avoidable blindness. “The Fred Hollows quote ‘I believe the basic attribute of mankind is to look after each other’ was the initial inspiration behind being involved,” Heidi said. “It’s such a privilege to see different colours and to see my beautiful family and friends. “It’s such a unique thing that the Fred Hollows Foundation offers people, so I thought why not get on board and support that. “Other than the physical and mental challenges that come with the trek, why wouldn’t you want to spend 12 hours or so talking nonstop with your friends about life, and maybe getting a blister or two that bears the scar of an epic adventure.” This year Heidi will be joined by Patterson Lakes’ Cavill Tullberg and Pakenham’s Bec McSweeny and Jennifer Younie who lost her brother to eye cancer. Jennifer’s husband has also had cataracts removed from both eyes and her mum has had operations to both eyes, so she felt that the Fred

Hollows Foundation was a worthy cause. The Blister Sisters trains every Sunday, averaging 30km per walk and is expect to complete a 40km walk over the next two weeks in preparation for the trek on Friday 18 November. The course trails along the coast of the picturesque Mornington Peninsula from Cape Shank to Point Nepean. “We average six to 6.5 km/h for each training walk and expect to maintain that speed on the actual day,“ Heidi said. “People may have seen us walking around town. We’ve walked to Berwick and back, Army Road to the end of the Aqueduct Trail and back, and from Patterson Lakes to the top of Oliver’s Hill and back.” Fred Hollows Foundation founding director Gabi Hollows said avoidable blindness affects 32.4 million people worldwide. “Four out of five people who are blind don’t need to be, and everyone who takes on the Coastrek challenge
is helping us to restore sight and change lives,” she said. “The impact of restoring someone’s sight is enormous. “For every $1 invested in eliminating avoidable blindness, at least $4 is returned to the local economy, as adults can return to work and children can receive an education and fulfil their potential.” In 2015 alone, the Fred Hollows
Foundation supported sight-restoring eye operations and treatments for 890,066 people, trained 64,613 surgeons, health workers and teachers, built and upgraded 110 medical facilities, and treated more than 8 million people with antibiotics for trachoma. THE Emirates Melbourne Cup took in the sights of Cardinia Shire last week as part of a whistlestop tour that will end at Flemington on the first Tuesday in November. Cup ambassadors, racecaller Bryan Martin and fashion ambassador Georgia Connelly, accompanied Australia’s most famous trophy around the shire on Thursday 20 October. The tour started at Emerald Primary School, then made its way to Puffing Billy, where it travelled from Emerald train station to the Lakeside station at Emerald Lake Park. From there, the cup was taken to
the Cardinia Shire headquarters in Officer for a civic reception, then to the Hillview aged care facility in Bunyip and finished by taking centre stage at Pakenham Racing Club’s first night race meeting of the year at Racing.com Park in Tynong. There the cup was reunited with last year’s winning jockey Michelle Payne, who rode a winner on the Pakenham card for her brother Patrick Payne. ‘People whisperer’ passes OBITUARY Richard ’Dicky’ Custerson Born 27 July 1963 Died 3 October 2016 RICHARD ‘Dicky’ Custerson has been remembered as a larger than life character with a beaming smile and an affinity for people, who had a kind word and sympathetic ear for everyone he came across. His good mate Brett Lovett told mourners at his packed-out funeral service in Cranbourne on 12 October that he was best described as “a people whisperer”. The founder and managing director of event management company A Positive Move died on 3 October, at 53, after a short battle with cancer, only days after watching his beloved Western Bulldogs win the AFL premiership, with wife Leanne and children Tayla, Wayde and Camille by his side. “Dicky was a unique man, who left his footprint on those lucky enough to be on the bus of life with him over his 53 years,” Mr Lovett said. “The outpouring of genuine love by so many, particularly during his recent battle, is testament that he was a very special person to many.” Richard Desmond Gerard Custerson was born on 27 July 1963 at Dandenong and District Hospital, weighing in at a healthy 10lb 10oz, to Des and Maureen Custerson. He was a younger brother to Rosemary and they lived at the time in Kerrs Lane, Narre Warren North. Des and Maureen then relocated to the family home at 4 Sunset Grove in Dandenong South, where they were soon joined by the arrivals of Bernadette, Neil and Jo-
Dicky Custerson - the people whisperer. sephine and the Custerson family was complete. Dicky fondly recalled those childhood days in Dandenong, surrounded by his own loving family and many uncles, aunts and cousins. He always said “they didn’t have much, but they had a lot” and that his parents did a good job bringing them up. He was a good kid, never got into too much trouble and was a natural leader. Kids were drawn to him because of his larger than life stature and spirit and he made friends easily. Street cricket in Dandenong was a cosmopolitan affair, with a variety of nationalities helping to make it a
scaled down version of World Series Cricket. In a sign of things to come, the games always ran smoothly when Dicky was playing, as he took on the role of manager, umpire and captain using his leadership and communication skills to make it a fair game for all so that everyone got a bat and a bowl. He would often say: “It’s important that everyone gets a lick of the icy pole”. The Custersons were a musical family and it played such a key role in his formative years. The kids often filled in for their parents’ band The Chubbies and also went on to play gigs as the Custerson Family Band. “We were a bit like the Partridge Family,” Dick would say, referring to the hit television series of the 1970s. Dicky spoke often about his wonderful memories of the family band and he also enjoyed jamming and playing with his high school mates in a band called Passenger. Later, he formed a duet Double Shot with good mate Andrew Schultz and they regularly packed out venues like The Settlement Hotel. Andrew was a workmate of Dicky’s wife Leanne, a Cranbourne girl he met at a dance and instantly summed up as “really bubbly and full of life”. They met 36 years to the day of his passing and were married in St Agatha’s Catholic Church - over the road from where Leanne grew up and the same venue as his funeral. Dicky’s work life started young, leaving school at 16 to work in the electrical industry as a sales cadet at Warburton and Frankie in South Melbourne. His mum Maureen took Dicky to this job interview and when he returned he said “I really hope I get this
job”. Maureen asked him why and he replied: “So I can buy a hamburger with the lot”. Dicky got the job, and after receiving his first pay, he arrived home with seven hamburgers with the lot - one for each member of the family. “How many 16 year olds would do that?” Mr Lovett asked. He went from there to work for Middy’s as a sales representative, all the time keeping his hand in with the music. Dicky was destined to move into the area of entertainment and sports management, right from the days when his parents would throw him the keys to the Blue Hi-Aux van to drive the gear and manage gigs for the family band. A Positive Move was formed two decades ago, starting with the Battle of the Bands at the Settlement Hotel. Dicky and good mate Dave Whalen were soon doing the legendary Pie Nights as fund-raisers for local sporting clubs, enlisting the help of sports personalities and comedians along the way. Bouyed by the success of the Pie Nights, A Positive Move branched out into the realm of sportsman’s nights and grand final breakfasts. He got to work alongside legends of the sports and entertainment world, but was never one to name drop. Everyone was equal in Dicky’s world. One of the more ambitious projects in those early years was to take the show on the road for a two-week Grandstand of Sports tour of Tasmania with good mate Paul Hudson and comedians Dave Butler and Dave Collie. Hudson, a former Hawthorn and Western Bulldogs player, made the AFL All-Australian team that year but forfeited the right to play to help his mate out with the Tasmanian trip. “You don’t forget that sort of thing,” Dicky
said in an interview with Star in 2010. One of his proudest achievements was the establishment of the A Positive Move Foundation, which raises money for those less fortunate. Dicky loved the Walt Disney edict: “If you can dream it, you can do it”. In 2011 he brought out cricket legends Sir Ian Botham, Sir Viv Richards and Sir Richard Hadlee and the A Day with Three Knights event packed out the Peninsula function centre at Docklands. The success of that event helped fund a family trip to Disneyland something Dicky had always dreamt of doing. The regular family holidays were to Port Fairy, where he cherished precious time spent with Leanne and the kids. Dicky was a perfectionist and driven to improve his management skills a band was introduced to his Franklin Covey diary by Max Walker 16 years ago. This helped Dicky stay true to his life’s mission and values, which were written into the diary each year and had a very familiar tone. The mission statement in the pages of the 2000 diary read: “To thank God and acknowledge him for the wonderful gifts he has given me. “A wonderful family to love and cherish and to build a loving healthy environment to develop and grow in. “Always be cheerful and to love life - communicate and respect people of all walks of life. “To lead and show strength, to always do the right thing and treat people with respect and kindness. “To enjoy and love life.” His family and many friends would agree - it was a mission accomplished.

Flower show is a blessing THIS year’s Berwick Flower Show raised more than $9000 for the Berwick Anglican Church and coincided with the church’s 150th anniversary celebrations. The flower show featured an array of floral arrangements, plants, food and activities to keep the children entertained. Berwick Flower Show chairman Neil Lucas said the show was well attended by members of the community and parishioners brought along their extended families and friends. “The whole building was well presented in every respect. The atmosphere was terrific and the stalls and food provision were top class,” Mr Lucas said. “The committee was strongly supported by 80 volunteers who helped both before and on the day of the fair “The wonderful flower display on the theme ‘150 Years’ at the front of the worship area was extra special, and was complemented by a multitude of specimen flowers and an Australian floral display.” Food included Devonshire tea, Dutch pancakes, curry, rice and a sausage sizzle. Mosque a blessing WITH reference to the article (Berwick News, 20 October) regarding the expansion of the mosque at the location of 365-367 BelgraveHallam Road. I have a worthy solution for the mosque authorities regarding parking inadequacies and increased numbers of worshippers. An increase in numbers of worshippers augurs well for the Islamic community and the rest of us and confirms the importance of being prayerful in this era of violence and terror. More adherants attending worship will bring about a loving growth of human qualities of loving kindness and respect for the laws and culture of this land among the increased adherants. The Catholic churches in all of Casey in order to cope with the large numbers of worshippers has spread the times of worship by having four or five masses on a Sunday and a Mass on a Saturday; thus overcoming the pressure of the need for increased parking facilities, and thus not being a nuisance to the neighbours. This change is based on the belief of honouring God for one day of the week. The Catholic Church has changed with the times and adhered to the law of the Ten Com-

Perhaps my Islamic brothers who are one with us in the fatherhood of Abraham whose sons are Ismael and Isaac may give due consideration to the flexing of the rule to accomodate the increased numbers of worshippers by having two, three, four or five prayer times and while keeping the law of Allah of keeping the Sabbath Day holy. I invite my brothers of the fatherhood of Abraham to become open to change and accomodation without sparking undue reticence. Incidentally my niece is married to a Muslim, my cousin is married to a Muslim and I have campaigned for the construction of the mosque on Belgrave-Hallam Road when it was first mooted and awarded a copy of the Koran by the mosque authorities. There are ways around any difficulty - look beyond the square in order to be accomodating. The greatness is not in the winning but in the love we show to the land which has given us the freedom to practice our faith freely. My brother is a priest in Bangaladesh and co-operates with the law of the land and has functioned for the past 30 years with few issues. The Christians in Syria are dying for their
faith. I thank God that we live in harmony. Our church in Endeavour Hills has for the past 10 years established rapport with the Islamic community. I urge all peoples to explore every potential for a solution motivated by harmony. God is love, he who abides in love abides in Allah. Insha Allah to all. God/Allah bless us all. What a farce I AM sitting here on this calm and sunny morning of the (would have been) GP Wave-off, feeling very angry at the last-minute cancellation of this event by the City of Casey. You made all the volunteers register online, gave minute instructions about how we were to be organised, waited until we had all bought our expensive supplies, and then, at the very last minute, called it all off. I hope you realise how many thousands of volunteer hours you have wasted, and how the loss of this important event will impact on our finances and remove one of the major opportunities in the year where the whole Cranbourne community comes together. TURNING up four hours late for a Dandenong Magistrates’ Court date didn’t cut the mustard for a hapless accused on 24 October. The man faced a long night in police cells after pushing his luck one too many times with a magistrate - who had previously warned him to arrive at court at 9.30am on the dot. The man had a long-winded excuse on hand after being led into court from the police cells. Apparently, his mate who was supposed to give him a lift didn’t show up. He waited until 11am, and then decided to walk to Narre Warren station to catch a train. On his arrival at 1am, he was arrested. “That’s it! I warned him,” the judge said. “I’ll adjourn it till tomorrow.” Before being led back into the cells, the accused was asked if there were any custody management issues. He told the court he was withdrawing from ice. A LONG-TERM drug user was urged by a Dandenong-based magistrate to get back into sport.
The 23-year-old accused, having used various drugs since he was 14, had just spent the past 98 days in prison on remand for family violence-related offences. “Go back to sport. It’s something very prosocial, and exercise is good for your mental and physical health,” the judge said. He also observed that few of the accused’s inmates would be keen on exercise. The judge said the man had limited criminal history, but was now “facing the consequences” of his drug use - including delusional thinking when first brought into custody. “It’s no surprise he’s got the mental health history he has.” He was sentenced to 18 months' jail with a nine-month non-parole term, followed by a community corrections order. THE now infamous kitten saved from a Rebels Bikie Clubhouse in Dandenong after it was burnt down has landed a Casey-based police officer in trouble with his colleagues. Constable Tim Parker, who lives in Casey but works in Greater Dandenong, was pictured with the small kitten after the fire, and

A banner reading, “Hero of the Week” has been hung in the Dandenong police station in honour of Const Parker and his kitten-based heroics. By Victoria Stone-Meadows A NARRE Warren businessman is using the profits from his aquarium shop to fund an extraordinary charity he runs by himself. Paul Furlong owns and operates Lots of Fins Aquarium on Victor Crescent in Narre Warren and also operates the charity Revive the Kids. Mr Furlong travels to the poorest of countries around the world and rescues slave families, orphaned children and desolate villages from desperate situations. Mr Furlong started his charity work about six and a half years ago and since then has built 23 orphanages that help with kids' training and education. He has also freed over 400 slaves and helped to re-home and educate about 250 orphans in countries such as Africa, Nepal, Pakistan, Burma, India, and the Philippines. “I have been overseas helping people almost every month for the last six and a half years,� he said. Mr Furlong started Revive the Kids in a reaction to other charities that he saw as ineffective and bloated by administration and operational costs that stopped money from going where it needed to be. “I was so frustrated with so many charites out there that had become a lucrative career for people,� he said. Mr Furlong also provides free concerts as a singer songwriter where some joy is needed while helping people in desperate situations. “If I see a desperate need, my heart just melts and I can’t leave
without doing something,� he said. “I work with someone I trust and I set up a freehold for families of slaves, help in businesses, build orphanages or schools, I’ve had a few sewing centers and training centers. “I take kids of the streets and give them training and something to live for.� The aim of Revive the Kids is to teach orphaned or abandoned children as well as destitute families the skills they need to survive and to improve their communities. “It doesn’t help to just give out money like some other charities do, it just makes things worse by creating a greedy handout culture which is really sad,� he said. “Revive the Kids aims to change the culture and make people self-supportive.� “Revive the Kids sets up villages or families with goats to sell the milk, chickens to sell chooks and eggs, buffalo to sell the milk and so on. “The goal is that within 12 months, they have a self-supportive team and we can hand over to locals and they take great pride and responsibility in it.� Mr Furlong says it’s not just the people he saves and their communities who benefit from his work. “It drives me and gives me a purpose to save lives,� he said. “It is what I live for, to figure out how I can simplify my own life to raise more funds to rescue more kids.� To find out more about Revive the Kids, visit http://www. revivethekids.com.au/

A Dandenong gym and social session is offering fitness and fun for the blind and visionimpaired. Dandenong Oasis is hosting a Blind Sports and Recreation Victoria gym and water aerobics program each Monday during school terms from 11am. Margaret Wickham has been attending for three or four years. “I wouldn’t go to gym on my own,” she said. “We alternate between gym and the pool, so it makes it a lot more fun. “Our gym program includes half an hour of boxing as well, which is great fun. We mix it up quite a bit. “Our instructor is very encouraging. “He doesn’t set big goals, he always comments on how good we’re doing. “We just gradually step it up as time progresses.” A BYO lunch and a game of swish follows the session. “We can hear the ball, it has bottle caps in it,” Ms Wickham said. “People can hear the ball. “At least half the ones that play are totally blind. Some of us have some vision. “You have to judge where the ball is to hit it by hearing where it is. “We actually hit the ball under the wall in the middle of the table.” There’s “no aerial stuff” involved, Ms Wickham laughed. “It just goes along the top of the table,” she said.
Admasu Akalewold and Margaret Wickham playing Pictures: STEWART CHAMBERS swish. 160542 “The good players are really fast. “You need good reflexes and you really need quite good concentration. “You tire quite quickly just because of the mental concentration needed, I think. “As soon as you start day dreaming you’ve had it!” Doveton’s Karren Martin also took up the program a few years ago. “I actually used to play table tennis when I went to school,” she said. “I thought, because I can’t play normal table tennis I’ll try the swish.” She enjoys the competition and the people. “We have a giggle and that,” she said. Ms Martin has an eye condition called retinitis pigmentosa. “I can see light and darkness,” she said. “I found out when I was about 17 that I had the eye disease, and in the last seven to eight years it’s got worse. I have to use a cane.”
She’s enjoyed getting back in the water. “I used to swim a lot and I enjoy the water,” she said. “In the water it seems with the exercises they’re a lot more strenuous. “It makes you work a bit harder.” Ms Wickham said about six people attended regularly and that more people were welcome. “Apart from the social contact - we’re like kids, really, it’s great to play together - it’s also good mental stimulation,” she said. “It helps brain function, it helps us to ward off ageing. “It keeps us fit both mentally and physically and it’s a great social outing instead of just talking in a circle over a cup of coffee.” Dandenong Oasis is at Heatherton Road and Cleeland Street, Dandenong. Message from the Premier This summer is forecast to be a dangerous fire season. Fire Action Week is the time for all Victorians to begin preparing. Many communities throughout Victoria have been battling with persistent rain and rising flood waters. This rainfall has provided the stimulus for increased growth of vegetation in forested, bush and grass fire areas across the state. As summer intensifies, these regions will dry out quickly, increasing the risk of uncontrollable fires, especially over the Christmas and summer holiday period. Emergency services are working with communities, businesses, local councils and government to reduce the risk in your area, while

However, it is up to you to understand the risk in your area, monitor conditions and take responsibility for your own safety and the safety of your household. Season will be above average FIRE Action Week, 23-30 October, is Victoria’s annual fire planning and preparation week. The Bushfire Natural Hazards CRC Seasonal Outlook has predicted an above average fire season for Victoria. Traditionally, Victoria’s worst period for fire is in January and February. Right now, forecasts show that there is potential for an above average fire season in Victoria in the west of the state. Fire Action Week is a great time to increase understanding of the local fire risks, prepare properties and talk to other members of the household about what everyone will do to stay safe from fire. Making informed decisions is vital for safety during a fire. Now is the best time to understand fire risk and get prepared, not when a fire starts. This week, talk to family, friends and neighbours about the fire risks and make plans for what to do on hot, dry, windy days. Make sure you know where to check Fire Danger Ratings (Vic Emergency website and app). Over summer, you’ll need to check the ratings daily to understand the fire risk in your area. Remember, as ratings increase, so does your risk of fire Last summer there were over 2000 warnings issued in Victoria. Striking lucky with defence win By Casey Neill A FAMILY business in Dandenong South is helping to build one of the world’s most advanced fighter jets. This project and other international achievements earned AW Bell the Manufacturing Award at the 37th Governor of Victoria Export Awards, presented on Thursday 6 October. CEO Sam Bell’s grandfather Alan William Bell started the business in Oakleigh in 1952. “He was a pattern-maker by trade,” he said. “The company started off as a pattern shop and tool room. “My father (Geoff) took over in 1983.” AW Bell moved to Dandenong South in 1997. “My father has retired three times,” Sam said. “I took over in November 2014. “Now he’s as retired as I’ve ever seen him. “Some weeks don’t see him at all. “I think he’s happy with the way things are going. “It’s great to have that resource available to us. We still get him to come and look at jobs.” Sam explained that the company had two main business streams. “One is producing investment and sand castings that we machine inhouse,” he said. “That’s probably about 80 per cent of our revenue.” In the investment arm, they make parts from wax, coat them in ceramics and resins, and melt the wax out to form a mould. They pour liquid metal inside, break off the mould and clean up the finished part. Sandcasting involves building a tool from wood and covering it in sand
that sets hard to create a mould. The other is AW Bell machinery, which is entirely export-based. “We design and supply equipment to the investment casting and sandcasting industries worldwide,” Sam said. “Sixty per cent is North American. The rest spread between South America, Asia and Europe. “In North America we are the name that comes to mind when you think of grinding equipment.” “This year, most likely 15 per cent of our money will come from exports to North America. “Next year that’s going to grow even further. “In 2017-‘18 we’ll see about 40 to 50 per cent.” AW Bell has grown its name in the US by doing the obvious - going to the US. Sam even spent a year there. “The only way we can break down those distance barriers is getting in their face and becoming another local supplier,” he said. He said the travel was also an opportunity to see what the industry was doing. Geoff saw the writing on the wall for the auto industry in about 2006. “We started actively chasing more work in the defence industry,” Sam said. They eyed a more skilled and complex market. “The type of work that isn’t going to go to China and India, or low-cost countries,” he said. “It was a lot longer road than what we expected to break into it. “Normally we’re producing parts within about 18 months. “It was about seven years to break into the defence industry in the US.” AW Bell is now producing parts for
Sam Bell with AW Bell’s latest award, and a photograph of his grandparents, who started the company. the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter. “We are still more competitive than their local sources on the highly complex products,” he said. “We get face-to-face and help them to solve their problems. “They don’t see that collaboration with their local suppliers. “That astounds me. “To me, it’s just good customer service.” The F-35 project has opened other
opportunities in the defence supply chain. “We’ve proven ourselves on this project,” he said. “Normally we come onto a project that’s running behind schedule and with quality issues and turn it around. “It’s really exciting to see a company based in Melbourne doing what we’re doing, providing high-quality, complex castings for the most technically-advanced fighter jet. “That’s going to be our platform to
really grow the business now.” Commercial director Vinesh Karan said the company had a US-based broker. “She’s looking for new opportunities and doing a lot of follow-up correspondence,” he said. “They feel like they can deal with someone locally. “In the next five years we’ll need a full-time AW Bell sub-employee over there or a foundry, a replica of our business here.”

Showpony’s centre stage By Casey Neill ALEX Morgan has been a Dandenong Show fixture for more than 60 years, and is known to those involved with the annual event as “grandpa”. But his great-grandchildren and a herd of ponies are threatening to steal his limelight. The Gazette met his daughter Lisa Wanless, granddaughter Amy Matthey, and six of his greatgrandchildren ahead of this year’s show, on Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 November. “My mother (Janice) got her first Shetland, which became my Shetland, when I was two,” Lisa said. “Fifty-one years ago we started breeding and showing Shetlands, which then turned into miniatures as well. “I have 13 grandchildren at the moment, and two on the way. “They all want to be involved.” Lisa’s sister, Jayne Stuchbery, is also part of the pony world. “I think mother and my sister will be judging and stewarding at the show this year,” Lisa said. “It depends on what they need.” Lisa has eight horses on her Pakenham property, a combination of miniatures and Shetlands, and Janice keeps one miniature at her Narre Warren North home. “She’s a life member of the miniature ponies,” Lisa said. “We’d always had ponies and horses as kids growing up. “For some reason she wanted to show for herself but, of course, the Shetlands and the miniatures are small and easy for her to handle. “She’s had a lot of success breeding and showing over the years, winning numerous prizes at the Royal as well as at Dandenong Show.” Asked what made a good show pony, Lisa pointed out one of her Shetlands as “very typical of an English Shetland, where it’s got very heavy legs”. “She’s quite stocky in her build,” she said. “That red and white one, she’s got finer legs more like a pony legs. “I go more for the heavy legs because that’s what a Shetland should be, like what was in the Shetland Isles, whereas the finer ones are more

ponies for showing. “I personally stay in it now more for the grandkids, because what little girl doesn’t want a pony? And little boy,” Lisa said. “So many kids don’t get that interaction now and they’ve only got a little back yard. “They just have a ball here.” She said the Dandenong Show was also a great

Lachie pitches it up By Nick Creely PAKENHAM pitcher Lachlan Madden has been selected in Baseball Australia’s 24 man squad for the Under 23 World Cup in Mexico at the end of October. Madden, 20, signed for the Houston Astros Organisation out of high school, and is now building an impressive career in Australia. Lachlan is a local Pakenham boy, playing with the Berwick Dodgers in the winter and with the Cheltenham Rustlers in the summer, but will now represent his country in the pinnacle of baseball in the world. He has come a long way since being cut from the Houston Astros early in 2016, ending his Major League Baseball dream, working on his craft with his home sides, waiting for another opportunity to arise. Across the 20-year-old’s 34-game minor league career, he had eight saves and 40 strikeouts from 46.2 innings pitched, numbers that suggest Madden has the talent to make it in the big time. Cheltenham Rustlers vice-president John Ferguson says it is a wonderful achievement, and a testament to Madden’s talent and persistence to come back from the disappointment of losing his professional contract.
“Lachie’s been performing extremely well. “He’s really reinvented himself as a mature age player, and that takes a bit of doing. “After his professional experience, he’s really coming back and making the most of the Australian scene, which is quite a strong scene," Ferguson said. Ferguson also says that this opportunity to represent Australia could open up other avenues for the talented pitcher. “He’s really set himself up to play for Australia in the World Classics and putting his hand up for the Olympic Games, which is obviously coming up in 2020. “Lachlan’s been an outstanding junior with lots of potential, and now he is maturing into a player that is not just an outstanding thrower, but a pitcher and a person. “He’s done a wonderful job and it’s a great thing for him to do. “It’s physically demanding being a pitcher; and Lachie is doing a great job and putting his best foot forward for the future. Representing Australia is arguably an athlete’s great accomplishment; and Madden now has the chance to prove he belongs on the world’s biggest stage once again, having already been a major com-
ponent of the Australian side in the 2013 Under 18 World Cup. In what was a long selection process, head coach of the Australian team, Tony Harris, says he is pleased with the squad he has been able to assemble. “The selection process took longer than anticipated, but at the end of the day I’m really pleased with the quality of the squad. “We’re excited to see how this team performs on the world stage; it’s a great opportunity for some of the younger members of the team to see how they match up against the best of the best. “It’s a great chance for these guys to get some international exposure. “I’m very excited about getting over there and watching these guys compete,” Harris said. The Australian side will play Austria in their opening game on 29 October in Polideportivo, Mexico, before clashes with Nicaragua, Chinese Taipei, Argentina and Japan round out their pool matches. The Under 23 Baseball World Cup was founded in 2014, with the Chinese Taipei the first winners of the championships at the cup in Taiwan.

Great weather for ducks By Russell Bennett and Nick Creely SATURDAY’S wild and wintry weather washed out almost all the cricket scheduled across the south east, with barely any games played throughout the entire West Gippsland Cricket Association (WGCA). There were only two games completed - one in B Grade, and one in C Grade - while all the other clashes throughout the competition were abandoned. Kooweerup (4/92) chased down St Francis Xavier’s 85 in just 14 overs in the B Grade clash, while in C Grade, Catani (7/145) easily got the better of Cardinia (113) at Rythdale Rec Reserve. Premier grade fans were robbed of what was sure to be an enthralling round with Tooradin fixtured to host Cardinia, Pakenham to host Kooweerup in a rematch of last year’s grand final, Upper Beaconsfield to host local rivals Emerald, and Merinda Park to host Pakenham Upper/Toomuc. Fans and players alike now have to wait until Round 12 for the reverse fixture, which could prove to be seasondefining for some clubs.
The weather also wrought havoc for the local turf competitions on Saturday, with both the Victorian Premier and Dandenong District Cricket Association (DDCA) weekend matches called off. It has been a frustrating start for both competitions this season, with two full rounds marred by the weather in a matter of four weeks. Casey-South Melbourne was scheduled to face Carlton at Princes Park, but both clubs decided to call the game off at around 12.30pm after a delayed start, while Dandenong called its game off early at Shepley Oval against Greenvale. In the DDCA, frustrated sides were forced to abandon day two of the weekend’s games, with some sides on day one in an imposing position for a win, but ultimately having to settle for a draw. No decisions have been made as to whether Victorian Premier Cricket will replay the round, with Round 1 already scheduled to be replayed on the reserve day - Sunday 6 November. Casey-South Melbourne will now face Camberwell at home on Saturday

THE Kooweerup faithful will be hoping their footy club’s most recent addition is the final piece to a drought-breaking premiership puzzle. Luke Walker has returned to the Demons after a season back at his former club, Pakenham. The super-skilled midfielder, who won the Alf Walton Medal in 2014 as the Ellinbank and District Football League’s (EDFL) best player, is worth only one point to the Demons given his history at the club - despite playing the majority of his career at Pakenham. Beloved at the Demons, Walker - a former captain of the senior side - will be under a lot less pressure than his previous stint given the impressive depth of the current midfield group. Rather than be relied upon to do the gruntwork through the engine room, the 30-year-old could be a huge asset out wide - either off a flank, or along the wing. He was a vital part of the Demons' side that won through to the 2014 EDFL West decider, only to be soundly beaten by Cora Lynn in the first premiership of its three-peat. Walker has won a host of team and individual honours throughout a glittering career so far, and joins Anthony Giuliano and Nathan Muratore as the Demons’ trifecta of big-name recruits to be unveiled so far in an already busy off-season. “Luke’s resume speaks for itself as he has been one of the best and most well-known players in the south east region for over 12 years,” said Demons player-coach Ben Collins. “Luke obviously was a part of the Kooweerup grand final side a few years ago and the tempta-

THE Pakenham Eels Rugby League Club and Touch Association has moved ahead in leaps and bounds since its inception and now it’s aiming to keep its momentum going even after the traditional winter league season has finished. Starting next month at Lakeside Recreation Reserve in Pakenham, the Eels will host a summer touch football competition for absolutely anyone in juniors, seniors, or mixed grades. It’s a joint initiative with NRL Victoria, Touch Football Australia, and VicHealth and aims to keep kids - and their parents alike - active all year round. “It’s a VicHealth-funded project and a partnership between the two sports so there’s some real synergy in terms of what the sports are,” said NRL Victoria project officer Tavale Ilalio at Lakeside recently. “It’s a high-level partnership but this is really the first time it’s been explored on the field. “It’s actually a whole-ofVictoria project so we’ve got the Pakenham Eels, the Frankston Raiders, and the Robinvale Storm from up on the Murray so it’s got quite a different feel. “The model is that we’re supporting - under that partnership through VicHealth - rugby league clubs in Victoria to deliver summer touch football, ultimately becoming two-sport clubs really. That’s a big job. “These guys (at Pakenham) have done an amazing amount of work on the back end of a really busy league season - the first one for them. “It’s so impressive. We’ve asked a lot of them but we’ve had those three clubs step up. It’s a two-year project and it’s running until June 2018. “From a VicHealth perspective, it’s about getting people active and utilising touch football as a way to get kids and

Jason Buchanan, the Eels’ secretary, said the touch competition was open to anyone interested in staying active over summer. “It gives families an opportunity to participate in the same team and it gives those parents the opportunity to play alongside their kids and also get active because they may have just been spectators during the winter rugby league season,” he said. “It also opens up to friends and work colleagues to come down and join in. “It was something that when we first put the club together we put forward as one of our objectives.” So, this was all perfect timing. “Our main objective is to keep that momentum (from winter rugby league) going because what you find is that
when you finish a season it all shuts down and you have to then build that up again,” Buchanan said. “We just want to keep people involved and keep kids involved. “A lot of people would just stop - not everyone goes and plays another sport in summer, so a lot of people just stop with any physical activity. To keep them going through that summer period and then into the winter season is perfect. “It’s only one night per week - you’re not dealing with training on Tuesdays and Thursdays and then a Saturday game, and it’s all at the one location so for the Pakenham area that’s perfect. “There’s no travelling - it’s just at Lakeside on a Monday night. New Honda Civic on show By Alistair Kennedy HONDA has unveiled its tenth generation Civic hatchback at the recent Paris Motor Show. It won’t arrive in Australia until next year but it does give us a good segue into our recent test of the gen-10 Civic four-door sedan that went on sale here a few months back. Civic has been a staple of the Honda range since it made its debut in 1973 Civic. Not only is it the Japanese carmaker’s all-time biggest seller, it also sits fifth on the list of the world’s all-time biggest selling passenger cars. Given this pedigree it has been sad to see Civic sales slump so dramatically over the past couple of years. Circumstances beyond Honda’s control contributed significantly to this decline including the GFC, Thai floods and Japanese tsunami. Nor has it been helped by competing against three of Australia’s biggest sellers, Toyota Corolla, Mazda3 and Hyundai i30. While the arrival of the new Civic sedan has certainly re-kindled interest hatches are far more popular in the small car segment and Honda dealers will be counting the days until the arrival of the new five-door model sometime during the first half of 2017. Unlike the previous model all Gen 10 Civics, both sedan and hatch, now

come from a new Honda factory in Thailand, with the same design and specifications. Like many in its class the Civic sedan has a coupe-like profile, clearly aimed at attracting younger and less conservative buyers than before. Having said that there’s nothing there that’s likely to really turn heads. The price-leading Civic VTi gets 16-inch steel wheels. All others step up to alloys, 16-inch in the VTi-S, 17s in the others. The Civic RS comes with an integrated body kit, including a gloss black grille, rear spoiler, sunroof and sportier wheels. The interior has been redesigned and has a more elegant look and feel
than before with a level of comfort that’s rare in cars of this size. Civic sedan is also more spacious due to a combination of clever design work and an extra 45 mm in the external width to the car. It’s particularly noticeable in the rear seats which could easily pass for a car in the next size up. The boot is large (around 518 litres) with a flat floor and low loading height. All models have space-saver spare wheels. The dashboard is logically designed with a large touchscreen and a digital instrument panel. There are plenty of clever storage ideas. Five versions of the Civic hatch are on offer. The VT-i and VTi-S, are pow-

For the first time in a Civic there is no manual gearbox with all models getting a CVT in place of the old fivespeed conventional automatic. The turbo engines 1.5-litre variants also gets paddle shifters. The dashboard display is a 7.0-inch colour touchscreen in all models. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto provide smartphone interface. However, they connect via USB cable rather than being wireless. Voice commands operate through either Siri Eyes Free or Google Voice.
Bluetooth phone and audio streaming are also standard. The premium VTi-LX gets dedicated satellite navigation, all other models rely on smartphone links. DAB+ radio is standard on VTi-L, RS and VTi-LX. In addition to the standard list of safety equipment (airbags, enhanced brakes and stability/traction control) all Civic variants get a reversing camera, emergency stop signal, tyre pressure warning and hill start assist. All models above the entry-level VTi also get front and rear parking sensors as well as LaneWatch which uses a camera mounted at the rear of the left-hand mirror to provide an 80-degree view of the left lane whenever the left indicator is activated. The top spec Civic VTi-LX takes safety to a higher level with the Honda Sensing package that includes Collision Mitigation Braking System; Road Departure Mitigation System; Forward Collision Warning; Lane Departure Warning; Lane Keeping Assist System; and Adaptive Cruise Control with Low-Speed Follow. The new turbo-petrol engine should be a major selling point. It’s quiet and refined with plenty of torque and low fuel consumption.
