A YOUNG jockey from Cranbourne East has had her livelihood stolen in a terrifying home invasion on Sunday 23 October. Jackie Beriman, 21, arrived at her Heather Grove home on Sunday night, about 10.30pm, shortly before turning in for the night. She was awoken by her dogs barking loudly - about 5.20am the following morning - when she discovered the front door of her house was wide open. Thinking she left it open herself after a long day, she didn’t think much of it until she finished getting ready for work and went into her garage. It was then she discovered her white 2014 Lexus had been stolen from the garage with her personal items and many thousands of dollars worth of equestrian gear in the car. “There was a heap of French saddles worth about $13,000 each and other race gear, $1000 cash in my purse, my bank cards and all my ID,” Ms Beriman said. “Not to mention the car itself which is worth about $78,000, I’m just lucky it was insured.” Police have confirmed the registration of the car is 1CC 7IS after an unconfirmed sighting of the Lexus in Berwick, about 4.30am Tuesday 25 October. Ms Beriman said the whole ordeal was a huge shock and had affected her ability to feel safe in her own home. “It’s really not nice I’ll tell you that and I wouldn’t wish it upon my worst enemies,” she said. “I didn’t get much sleep last night and I’m really shaken up - I’m still trying to wrap my head around what happened.” “It is a very scary experience, knowing someone was in my house while I was asleep. It is very hard to

Revved up in the rain THOUSANDS of people flocked to the centre of Cranbourne on Saturday 22 October for the 2016 GP Run despite the wet weather. Motorcyclists and spectators braved the wild weather to participate in the 18th annual event that saw about a thousand riders leave Cranbourne headed for Phillip Island. Although many of the activities that were scheduled to accompany the motorbike wave-off were cancelled, the main event went ahead without a hitch. City of Casey Young Citizen of the Year Oliver Thomson waved the chequered flag that sent the bikes on their way and sang the national anthem for the crowd. The event was hosted by the City of Casey and delivered in partnership with Victoria Police and the Victorian Motorcycle Council. In brief Stabbing arrest A CRANBOURNE man has been arrested and charged with various assault offences following the stabbing in Cranbourne on Monday 24 October. The 45-year-old from Cranbourne was arrested at a property in Monahans Road about 8.35pm, after a man from Mount Eliza was stabbed and taken to hospital. The 57-year-old victim, from Mount Eliza, suffered non-life threatening injuries from the stabbing. The Cranbourne man has been charged with assault related offences including intentionally causing injury and was to appear at the Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday 25 October.

A GRASS fire in the backyard of a residential block on Lecky Street in Cranbourne is being treated as suspicious by police. Emergency services were called to the house about 5am on Monday 24 October and quickly had the situation under control. While there was no damage to any buildings or structures around the fire, police are treating the indecent as a deliberate act.

GP Run minus the frills is still a success By Victoria Stone-Meadows THE annual Cranbourne GP Run was reckoned a success by the City of Casey despite activities being cancelled due to wild weather. Activity volunteers and stallholders were notified on Friday afternoon that due to the weather the activities planned in the side streets of Cranbourne had to be cancelled. City of Casey group manager Facilities and Events James Rouse said bike riders and spectators enjoyed the event nonetheless. “More than a thousand bikes and the same amount of spectators enjoyed the 2016 Cranbourne GP Run despite the unpredictable weather,” Mr Rouse said. “The weather was monitored
throughout the week, however, following a severe weather warning on Friday morning, Victoria Police and council met to evaluate the risk to the community.” “All volunteers and stallholders were advised Friday afternoon that the event would be scaled down with a few stallholders expressing their disappointment.” The 2016 GP Run was supposed to be the first year the City of Casey partnered with the Casey Cardinia Foundation as the official charity beneficiary of the event. Executive officer of the Casey Cardinia Foundation Therese Howell said while they weren’t able to fund-raise on the day, the foundation understood why their marquee
had to be cancelled. “I think that the organisers were taking the advice of police in regards to the weather predictions and they have the safety of everybody in mind,” she said. “We are grateful they contacted us as early as possible, so we could let all our volunteers know and cancel them, they took the best advice they could.” Ms Howell said the foundation was grateful for the opportunity to be the official charity for the GP Run and was looking forward to an ongoing partnership with the City of Casey. “While we were a bit disappointed we absolutely understand and we’ll be talking with the organisers
later this week; it’s hard for them to cancel things too,” Ms Howell said. “We understand there is an opportunity for us to be the charity again next year, and hopeful that’s the case and as we are the region’s community foundation we are going to be discussing the potential for being the ingoing charity for GP Run. “ James Rouse confirmed there are ongoing discussions about the Casey Cardinia Foundation receiving ongoing exposure from the City of Casey Council. “Given the limited exposure they received due to the scaling down of the event, council will explore future opportunities to partner with them,” he said.
CASEY Crime Investigation Unit is continuing inquiries into shots fired at a display home in Clyde North earlier this month. Police believe a car approached the empty house on Newbridge Boulevard about 5am on 15 October. The front door and a window of the house were damaged after the unknown gunmen fired a number of bullets at the building. Police have released images from CCTV footage of a car that was in the area at the time and police believe the people in the car may be able to help with the investigation. Attempted carjackings A 16-YEAR-OLD boy from Clyde North has been arrested and charged in relation to two attempted carjackings and assaults in his home suburb on Thursday 13 October. The first incident occurred at about 11.30am on Viewbright Road when a 29-yearold man from Yarraville getting out of his car was approached by the teenager. The teen demanded the man hand over his car keys but the man refused and the teenager then assaulted him, causing minor injuries. The teenager left the man there and approached a second man in Como Parade a short distance away. Again the teen demanded the man hand over his car keys and assaulted him when the man refused to comply with the teen’s demands. The 28-year-old man from Cranbourne West also received minor injuries. Frontline Tactical Unit officers arrested the teenager and charged him with two counts of attempted robbery, two counts of attempted theft of motor vehicle and assault-related offences.

Dicky a man of the people OBITUARY Richard ’Dicky’ Custerson Born 27 July 1963 Died 3 October 2016 RICHARD ‘Dicky’ Custerson has been remembered as a larger than life character with a beaming smile and an affinity for people, who had a kind word and sympathetic ear for everyone he came across. His good mate Brett Lovett told mourners at his packed-out funeral service in Cranbourne on 12 October that he was best described as “a people whisperer”. The founder and managing director of event management company A Positive Move died on 3 October, at 53, after a short battle with cancer, only days after watching his beloved Western Bulldogs win the AFL premiership, with wife Leanne and children Tayla, Wayde and Camille by his side. “Dicky was a unique man, who left his footprint on those lucky enough to be on the bus of life with him over his 53 years,” Mr Lovett said. “The outpouring of genuine love by so many, particularly during his recent battle, is testament that he was a very special person to many.” Richard Desmond Gerard Custerson was born on 27 July 1963 at Dandenong and District Hospital, weighing in at a healthy 10lb 10oz, to Des and Maureen Custerson. He was a younger brother to Rosemary and they lived at the time in Kerrs Lane, Narre Warren North. Des and Maureen then relocated to the family home at 4 Sunset Grove in Dandenong South, where they were soon joined by the arrivals of Bernadette, Neil and Jo-
Dicky Custerson - the people whisperer. sephine and the Custerson family was complete. Dicky fondly recalled those childhood days in Dandenong, surrounded by his own loving family and many uncles, aunts and cousins. He always said “they didn’t have much, but they had a lot” and that his parents did a good job bringing them up. He was a good kid, never got into too much trouble and was a natural leader. Kids were drawn to him because of his larger than life stature and spirit and he made friends easily. Street cricket in Dandenong was a cosmopolitan affair, with a variety of nationalities helping to make it a
scaled down version of World Series Cricket. In a sign of things to come, the games always ran smoothly when Dicky was playing, as he took on the role of manager, umpire and captain using his leadership and communication skills to make it a fair game for all so that everyone got a bat and a bowl. He would often say: “It’s important that everyone gets a lick of the icy pole”. The Custersons were a musical family and it played such a key role in his formative years. The kids often filled in for their parents’ band The Chubbies and also went on to play gigs as the Custerson Family Band. “We were a bit like the Partridge Family,” Dick would say, referring to the hit television series of the 1970s. Dicky spoke often about his wonderful memories of the family band and he also enjoyed jamming and playing with his high school mates in a band called Passenger. Later, he formed a duet Double Shot with good mate Andrew Schultz and they regularly packed out venues like The Settlement Hotel. Andrew was a workmate of Dicky’s wife Leanne, a Cranbourne girl he met at a dance and instantly summed up as “really bubbly and full of life”. They met 36 years to the day of his passing and were married in St Agatha’s Catholic Church - over the road from where Leanne grew up and the same venue as his funeral. Dicky’s work life started young, leaving school at 16 to work in the electrical industry as a sales cadet at Warburton and Frankie in South Melbourne. His mum Maureen took Dicky to this job interview and when he returned he said “I really hope I get this
job”. Maureen asked him why and he replied: “So I can buy a hamburger with the lot”. Dicky got the job, and after receiving his first pay, he arrived home with seven hamburgers with the lot - one for each member of the family. “How many 16 year olds would do that?” Mr Lovett asked. He went from there to work for Middy’s as a sales representative, all the time keeping his hand in with the music. Dicky was destined to move into the area of entertainment and sports management, right from the days when his parents would throw him the keys to the Blue Hi-Aux van to drive the gear and manage gigs for the family band. A Positive Move was formed two decades ago, starting with the Battle of the Bands at the Settlement Hotel. Dicky and good mate Dave Whalen were soon doing the legendary Pie Nights as fund-raisers for local sporting clubs, enlisting the help of sports personalities and comedians along the way. Bouyed by the success of the Pie Nights, A Positive Move branched out into the realm of sportsman’s nights and grand final breakfasts. He got to work alongside legends of the sports and entertainment world, but was never one to name drop. Everyone was equal in Dicky’s world. One of the more ambitious projects in those early years was to take the show on the road for a two-week Grandstand of Sports tour of Tasmania with good mate Paul Hudson and comedians Dave Butler and Dave Collie. Hudson, a former Hawthorn and Western Bulldogs player, made the AFL All-Australian team that year but forfeited the right to play to help his mate out with the Tasmanian trip. “You don’t forget that sort of thing,” Dicky
said in an interview with Star in 2010. One of his proudest achievements was the establishment of the A Positive Move Foundation, which raises money for those less fortunate. Dicky loved the Walt Disney edict: “If you can dream it, you can do it”. In 2011 he brought out cricket legends Sir Ian Botham, Sir Viv Richards and Sir Richard Hadlee and the A Day with Three Knights event packed out the Peninsula function centre at Docklands. The success of that event helped fund a family trip to Disneyland something Dicky had always dreamt of doing. The regular family holidays were to Port Fairy, where he cherished precious time spent with Leanne and the kids. Dicky was a perfectionist and driven to improve his management skills a band was introduced to his Franklin Covey diary by Max Walker 16 years ago. This helped Dicky stay true to his life’s mission and values, which were written into the diary each year and had a very familiar tone. The mission statement in the pages of the 2000 diary read: “To thank God and acknowledge him for the wonderful gifts he has given me. “A wonderful family to love and cherish and to build a loving healthy environment to develop and grow in. “Always be cheerful and to love life - communicate and respect people of all walks of life. “To lead and show strength, to always do the right thing and treat people with respect and kindness. “To enjoy and love life.” His family and many friends would agree - it was a mission accomplished.

Andrew the Peacock, a long-time resident of Cannons Creek 160911 The townspeople that wanted Andrew to stay even suggested buying a few hens for him but as peacocks are an introduced species, this arrangement could not go forward. City of Casey CEO Mike Tyler said a number of complaints were received from residents in relation to the bird causing damage to property, eating pet food and distressing residents in Cannons Creek. “Nigel’s Animal Rescue was aware of the issue and offered to relocate the bird at no cost to council,” Mr Tyler said. “As peacocks are not the responsibility of council, for the safety of the bird and the peace and harmony of the local community, council supported Nigel’s Animal Rescue to relocate the bird to a more appropriate location.” Nigel Williamson of Nigel’s Ani-

mal Rescue said Andrew was probably lonely, as he had no other peacocks or peahens to socialise with. “A peacock is a social bird, they like to have other peacocks and peahens around them and normally have three or four females per male,” Me Williamson said. “Andrew's on his own and has noone coming to him despite his loud mating calls.” Mr Williamson has been researching animal sanctuaries in Pearcedale and Blind Bight so people can still visit Andrew once he has been relocated. “I already have two places earmarked for him to go to, one has 30 peacocks and I think he will be very happy there.” “I am still in discussions with the residents to figure out the best option for Andrew.”
Once Andrew is moved to his new home, the townspeople of Cannons Creek have said they are willing to help fund his new living arrangements. “The Creek is willing to put in a fund and help him get his hens and whatever he needs at his new place,” Ms Damon said. “Andrew doesn’t need the Taj Mahal of peacocks treatment, I’m sure he would be happy with a few hens at the property in Blind Bight where the Cannons Creek people can see him on Facebook and visit him and his wives and babies.” “People think we are crazy and maybe we are but we are all very fond of this bird.” As of Friday 21 October, Andrew the peacock had not been captured or re-located from Cannons Creek.

A PEACOCK named Andrew that has been a resident of Cannons Creek for many years will be moved to a new location, after some human residents of the town have complained about him. No-one seems to know where Andrew came from but many of the people in the town have grown fond of him and consider him a legitimate member of the Cannons Creek community. However, Casey Council has received a number of complaints about Andrew in recent times and a local animal control business has been given the task of moving the bird out of the town. Cannons Creek resident Debbie Damon said Andrew had been a great asset to the town and while he was popular among most of the locals, people had realised it was time for him to move on. “I’m all for Andrew staying in the town but I’ve spoken to many people and they understand time is against Andrew and council says he has to go,” she said. “As much as we have come to the realisation he has to go, some people will be upset.” Ms Damon said the town had a community meeting about keeping Andrew in the town and while the majority of people voted to keep him, those that complained to the council had got their way. “We had a residential meeting about two or three weeks ago and voted if Andrew should stay then behind everyone’s back, the ones who wanted him gone went to council and complained,” she said. “They never bought up their issues at the meeting.”

Mosque a blessing WITH reference to the article (Berwick News, 20 October) regarding the expansion of the mosque at the location of 365-367 BelgraveHallam Road. I have a worthy solution for the mosque authorities regarding parking inadequacies and increased numbers of worshippers. An increase in numbers of worshippers augurs well for the Islamic community and the rest of us and confirms the importance of being prayerful in this era of violence and terror. More adherants attending worship will bring about a loving growth of human qualities of loving kindness and respect for the laws and culture of this land among the increased adherants. The Catholic churches in all of Casey in order to cope with the large numbers of worshippers has spread the times of worship by having four or five masses on a Sunday and a Mass on a Saturday; thus overcoming the pressure of the need for increased parking facilities, and thus not being a nuisance to the neighbours. This change is based on the belief of honouring God for one day of the week. The Catholic Church has changed with the times and adhered to the law of the Ten Com-

Perhaps my Islamic brothers who are one with us in the fatherhood of Abraham whose sons are Ismael and Isaac may give due consideration to the flexing of the rule to accomodate the increased numbers of worshippers by having two, three, four or five prayer times and while keeping the law of Allah of keeping the Sabbath Day holy. I invite my brothers of the fatherhood of Abraham to become open to change and accomodation without sparking undue reticence. Incidentally my niece is married to a Muslim, my cousin is married to a Muslim and I have campaigned for the construction of the mosque on Belgrave-Hallam Road when it was first mooted and awarded a copy of the Koran by the mosque authorities. There are ways around any difficulty - look beyond the square in order to be accomodating. The greatness is not in the winning but in the love we show to the land which has given us the freedom to practice our faith freely. My brother is a priest in Bangaladesh and co-operates with the law of the land and has functioned for the past 30 years with few issues. The Christians in Syria are dying for their
faith. I thank God that we live in harmony. Our church in Endeavour Hills has for the past 10 years established rapport with the Islamic community. I urge all peoples to explore every potential for a solution motivated by harmony. God is love, he who abides in love abides in Allah. Insha Allah to all. God/Allah bless us all. What a farce I AM sitting here on this calm and sunny morning of the (would have been) GP Wave-off, feeling very angry at the last-minute cancellation of this event by the City of Casey. You made all the volunteers register online, gave minute instructions about how we were to be organised, waited until we had all bought our expensive supplies, and then, at the very last minute, called it all off. I hope you realise how many thousands of volunteer hours you have wasted, and how the loss of this important event will impact on our finances and remove one of the major opportunities in the year where the whole Cranbourne community comes together. It’s None Of Our Business But ... TURNING up four hours late for a Dandenong Magistrates’ Court date didn’t cut the mustard for a hapless accused on 24 October. The man faced a long night in police cells after pushing his luck one too many times with a magistrate - who had previously warned him to arrive at court at 9.30am on the dot. The man had a long-winded excuse on hand after being led into court from the police cells. Apparently, his mate who was supposed to give him a lift didn’t show up. He waited until 11am, and then decided to walk to Narre Warren station to catch a train. On his arrival at 1am, he was arrested. “That’s it! I warned him,� the judge said. “I’ll adjourn it till tomorrow.� Before being led back into the cells, the accused was asked if there were any custody management issues. He told the court he was withdrawing from ice. A LONG-TERM drug user was urged by a Dandenong-based magistrate to get back into sport.
The 23-year-old accused, having used various drugs since he was 14, had just spent the past 98 days in prison on remand for family violence-related offences. “Go back to sport. It’s something very prosocial, and exercise is good for your mental and physical health,� the judge said. He also observed that few of the accused’s inmates would be keen on exercise. The judge said the man had limited criminal history, but was now “facing the consequences� of his drug use - including delusional thinking when first brought into custody. “It’s no surprise he’s got the mental health history he has.� He was sentenced to 18 months' jail with a nine-month non-parole term, followed by a community corrections order. THE now infamous kitten saved from a Rebels Bikie Clubhouse in Dandenong after it was burnt down has landed a Casey-based police officer in trouble with his colleagues. Constable Tim Parker, who lives in Casey but works in Greater Dandenong, was pictured with the small kitten after the fire, and

Artist embarks on final cut By Victoria Stone-Meadows AN OLD cypress tree on the Tooradin foreshore is undergoing a transformation from a dangerous old tree to an impressive piece of artwork. The tree was ruled dangerous by the City of Casey Council last year after it dropped a few limbs near the car park and picnic area in the last two or three years. The Tooradin Foreshore Committee decided that the tree stump shouldn’t go to waste and contracted a chainsaw artist to turn the leftover stump into something special. Chainsaw carving artists Brandon Kroon from Mount Evelyn was contracted to do the work and both the artist and the Foreshore Committee worked on a design to reflect the history of the area. “The foreshore committee wanted something that reflected the strong fishing tradition of Tooradin,” Mr Kroon said. “After a bit of back and forth we decided on a design that shows as old style fisherman battling with a snapper and a pelican among the waves.” Foreshore committee secretary Ross Wilkie said the sculpture would bring more tourists to the Tooradin foreshore. “It looks much better than the shabby tree that was here before,” he said. “It’ll be a talking point for visitors to the foreshore.” Mr Kroon has spent just seven days working on the sculpture and is aiming to have the artwork completed and weather sealed by Saturday 22 October.

Student show off their skills YEAR nine students at Cranbourne East Secondary College learned a wide variety of useful skills when they planned and hosted a community day at the school. The Thursday 20 October event saw students engage with local businesses and charities to bring a day of fun and food to the school community. The fete/carnival day was planning and run entirely by students at the school and took 14 weeks to organise. The students learned skills such as collaboration, planning, budgeting, resilience and much more to give their whole community a day to remember. With food stalls, petting zoo, jumping castle, and even water bombing teachers, the students had no shortage of things to do on the community day. The Cranbourne East Secondary College Community Day was a huge success according to Pedagogy Leader Gillian Andrews. “They are taught skills leading up to the day but, ultimately, it’s all up to them,” she said. “The project shows students what they are capable of and the success of this project is reflected in how engaged and responsible the students are, especially in year nine where data shows that students often lose connection with their schooling.”

TWO residents from Hampton Park have been part of a project to produce a Bollywood style Hindi movie in Melbourne. The film’s title is “WOH” meaning “That” - and is about a girl returning to her dad’s home in Melbourne after a marriage break-up in London. Husband and wife pair, Ajay and Mita Gupta, both played characters in the movie and while they have a history of stage acting, said acting in a movie was very different. “Acting in this movie was very different to what we had done earlier,” the couple said. “The sound of the clapboard, Chris’s (Director Of Photography) call of “camera rolling” and Deo’s (Director) “Action” would instantly change Mita into Madhavi and Ajay into Desouza.” “We had to make sure we gave our best in every scene as the role demanded.” Mita plays the character Madhavi, a mature minded and loyal office secretary who co-ordinates between the staff members of the office where the film is set. Ajay plays Mr Desouza, who is a rich but simple businessman and the dad of the leading actress, Costina. Ajay and Mita said they had fun making the film and working with the production team and other cast members to help bring the project together. “We had a great time and enjoyed working with the very

A NARRE Warren businessman is using the profits from his aquarium shop to fund an extraordinary charity he runs by himself. Paul Furlong owns and operates Lots of Fins Aquarium on Victor Crescent in Narre Warren and also operates the charity Revive the Kids. Mr Furlong travels to the poorest of countries around the world and rescues slave families, orphaned children and desolate villages from desperate situations. Mr Furlong started his charity work about six and a half years ago and since then has built 23 orphanages that help with kids' training and education. He has also freed over 400 slaves and helped to re-home and educate about 250 orphans in countries such as Africa, Nepal, Pakistan, Burma, India, and the Philippines. “I have been overseas helping people almost every month for the last six and a half years,” he said. Mr Furlong started Revive the Kids in a reaction to other charities that he saw as ineffective and bloated by administration and operational costs that stopped money from going where it needed to be. “I was so frustrated with so many charites out there that had become a lucrative career for

Embracing body By Victoria Stone-Meadows TWO enterprising women are aiming to screen a documentary at Fountain Gate and start a movement in the South-East pushing back against body image pressures. The documentary “Embrace” tells the story of body image activist Taryn Brumfitt as she explores the issues surrounding body image and how people are affected by these pressures. The screening of the documentary at Fountain Gate will include a briefing session afterward where viewers can share their experiences and views on body image in society. The film is a starting point for a wider movement that encourages people to become ambassadors for the “The Body Image Movement” and help combat negative body image in society. Sharelle Cameron is a secondary school teacher from Hallam and has become an ambassador for the movement to help people develop love for how they are. “I donated to the crowd funding effort for the film a few years ago then when it came out, I saw it in Warragul and I was blown away by it,” she said. “I looked it up and contacted them about how to get involved, applied for it and was accepted to be an ambassador.” Ms Cameron has teamed up with Syndi Grambau who runs a counselling and coaching business focused on women’s mental health issues.

has to stop, it’s not helping us.” Ms Grambau said The Body Image Movement went beyond fitness or weight and taught people about being happy with themselves. “The purpose of the movement is not fat versus skinny or fit versus not fit, it’s about you finding yourself and fitting with you and finding love for own body irrespective of size. “The message is for us to have more self-compassion and love for ourselves.” Ms Cameron and Ms Grambau need to sell 74 more tickets for the screening at Fountain Gate to go ahead. VILLAGE GRAND OPENING SUCCESS After a very busy start to business on Saturday, the café will now be open for breakfast and lunch seven days week. Many communities throughout Victoria have been battling with persistent rain and rising flood waters. This rainfall has provided the stimulus for increased growth of vegetation in forested, bush and grass fire areas across the state. As summer intensifies, these regions will dry out quickly, increasing the risk of uncontrollable fires, especially over the Christmas and summer holiday period. Emergency services are working with communities, businesses, local councils and government to reduce the risk in your area, while
ensuring resources are in place to respond to all emergencies. However, it is up to you to understand the risk in your area, monitor conditions and take responsibility for your own safety and the safety of your household. Taking steps to get prepared before summer means you know what to do when a fire starts. Talk to your family and friends about how you’ll know when to leave and where to go to stay safe. The Bushfire Natural Hazards CRC Seasonal Outlook has predicted an above average fire season for Victoria. Traditionally, Victoria’s worst period for fire is in January and February. Right now, forecasts show that there is potential for an above average fire season in Victoria in the west of the state. Fire Action Week is a great time to increase understanding of the local fire risks, prepare properties and talk to other members of the household about what everyone will do to stay safe from fire. Making informed decisions is vital for safety during a fire. Now is the best time to understand fire risk and get prepared, not when a fire starts. This week, talk to family, friends and neighbours about the fire risks and make plans for what to do on hot, dry, windy days. Make sure you know where to check Fire Danger Ratings (Vic Emergency website and app). Over summer, you’ll need to check the ratings daily to understand the fire risk in your area. Remember, as ratings increase, so does your risk of fire Last summer there were over 2000 warnings issued in Victoria. Striking lucky with defence win By Casey Neill A FAMILY business in Dandenong South is helping to build one of the world’s most advanced fighter jets. This project and other international achievements earned AW Bell the Manufacturing Award at the 37th Governor of Victoria Export Awards, presented on Thursday 6 October. CEO Sam Bell’s grandfather Alan William Bell started the business in Oakleigh in 1952. “He was a pattern-maker by trade,” he said. “The company started off as a pattern shop and tool room. “My father (Geoff) took over in 1983.” AW Bell moved to Dandenong South in 1997. “My father has retired three times,” Sam said. “I took over in November 2014. “Now he’s as retired as I’ve ever seen him. “Some weeks don’t see him at all. “I think he’s happy with the way things are going. “It’s great to have that resource available to us. We still get him to come and look at jobs.” Sam explained that the company had two main business streams. “One is producing investment and sand castings that we machine inhouse,” he said. “That’s probably about 80 per cent of our revenue.” In the investment arm, they make parts from wax, coat them in ceramics and resins, and melt the wax out to form a mould. They pour liquid metal inside, break off the mould and clean up the finished part. Sandcasting involves building a tool from wood and covering it in sand
that sets hard to create a mould. The other is AW Bell machinery, which is entirely export-based. “We design and supply equipment to the investment casting and sandcasting industries worldwide,” Sam said. “Sixty per cent is North American. The rest spread between South America, Asia and Europe. “In North America we are the name that comes to mind when you think of grinding equipment.” “This year, most likely 15 per cent of our money will come from exports to North America. “Next year that’s going to grow even further. “In 2017-‘18 we’ll see about 40 to 50 per cent.” AW Bell has grown its name in the US by doing the obvious - going to the US. Sam even spent a year there. “The only way we can break down those distance barriers is getting in their face and becoming another local supplier,” he said. He said the travel was also an opportunity to see what the industry was doing. Geoff saw the writing on the wall for the auto industry in about 2006. “We started actively chasing more work in the defence industry,” Sam said. They eyed a more skilled and complex market. “The type of work that isn’t going to go to China and India, or low-cost countries,” he said. “It was a lot longer road than what we expected to break into it. “Normally we’re producing parts within about 18 months. “It was about seven years to break into the defence industry in the US.” AW Bell is now producing parts for
Sam Bell with AW Bell’s latest award, and a photograph of his grandparents, who started the company. the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter. “We are still more competitive than their local sources on the highly complex products,” he said. “We get face-to-face and help them to solve their problems. “They don’t see that collaboration with their local suppliers. “That astounds me. “To me, it’s just good customer service.” The F-35 project has opened other
opportunities in the defence supply chain. “We’ve proven ourselves on this project,” he said. “Normally we come onto a project that’s running behind schedule and with quality issues and turn it around. “It’s really exciting to see a company based in Melbourne doing what we’re doing, providing high-quality, complex castings for the most technically-advanced fighter jet. “That’s going to be our platform to
really grow the business now.” Commercial director Vinesh Karan said the company had a US-based broker. “She’s looking for new opportunities and doing a lot of follow-up correspondence,” he said. “They feel like they can deal with someone locally. “In the next five years we’ll need a full-time AW Bell sub-employee over there or a foundry, a replica of our business here.”

Showpony’s centre stage By Casey Neill ALEX Morgan has been a Dandenong Show fixture for more than 60 years, and is known to those involved with the annual event as “grandpa”. But his great-grandchildren and a herd of ponies are threatening to steal his limelight. The Gazette met his daughter Lisa Wanless, granddaughter Amy Matthey, and six of his greatgrandchildren ahead of this year’s show, on Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 November. “My mother (Janice) got her first Shetland, which became my Shetland, when I was two,” Lisa said. “Fifty-one years ago we started breeding and showing Shetlands, which then turned into miniatures as well. “I have 13 grandchildren at the moment, and two on the way. “They all want to be involved.” Lisa’s sister, Jayne Stuchbery, is also part of the pony world. “I think mother and my sister will be judging and stewarding at the show this year,” Lisa said. “It depends on what they need.” Lisa has eight horses on her Pakenham property, a combination of miniatures and Shetlands, and Janice keeps one miniature at her Narre Warren North home. “She’s a life member of the miniature ponies,” Lisa said. “We’d always had ponies and horses as kids growing up. “For some reason she wanted to show for herself but, of course, the Shetlands and the miniatures are small and easy for her to handle. “She’s had a lot of success breeding and showing over the years, winning numerous prizes at the Royal as well as at Dandenong Show.” Asked what made a good show pony, Lisa pointed out one of her Shetlands as “very typical of an English Shetland, where it’s got very heavy legs”. “She’s quite stocky in her build,” she said. “That red and white one, she’s got finer legs more like a pony legs. “I go more for the heavy legs because that’s what a Shetland should be, like what was in the

Lisa’s grandkids ride and help to prepare the ponies for showing. “I personally stay in it now more for the grandkids, because what little girl doesn’t want a pony? And little boy,” Lisa said. “So many kids don’t get that interaction now and they’ve only got a little back yard. “They just have a ball here.”
Picture: ROB CAREW She said the Dandenong Show was also a great opportunity for kids to interact with farm animals. “It always amazes me when little kids, you ask them where milk comes from and they say ‘the carton’ or the ‘milk bar’,” she said. “They’ll have a bit of sheering going on or milking of cows and they have the animal nursery.”

Keenan jumps the hoops By David Nagel THERE’S an old saying in sport that goes something like this, “when the going gets tough, the tough get going.” It’s a saying that perfectly sums up the efforts of Keenan O’Hanlon, the 13-year-old Alkira Secondary College student who continued a successful 2016 with victory in the Under 14 Boys Triple Jump at the SSV Secondary Track and Field Championships last week. He also won the silver medal in the long jump with a leap of 5.78 metres. O’Hanlon, who had jumped 11.61 and 11.85 at his first two attempts, was locked in a gold medal showdown with St Albans’ Ryan
Lee before striding his way to 12.25 metres and the state championship. It’s not surprising that the Cranbourne Little Athletics star saved his best for the big occasion, because he’s been there and done it before. He won the long jump/triple jump double at the Victorian Little Athletics State Championships earlier this year, qualifying him for the Australian Championships in Adelaide where he finished third in the triple jump. He also competed in the Victorian Junior Championships, jumping 11.49 metres and qualifying for the national championships in Perth, where he finished fifth with a jump of 11.95 metres. O’Hanlon said he relishes the
competition against the best in his age group. “I felt comfortable but I was always enjoying the challenge,” he said of his recent win. “I’ve been competing at state level since I was nine and been to two nationals in a row, but it’s great to win and know you’re the best in the state. As the pressure rose I jumped further -12.25 was a good jump but 12.49 is my PB.” O’Hanlon has loved athletics ever since he started at the age of five, and became attracted to the triple jump as his distances began to rise. He trains on Monday and Thursday at Cranbourne, and has benefitted greatly from his work with the Alkira’s Sports Academy.
He competes in races on Saturdays, giving him the perfect preparation for the Victorian All-Schools Championships to be held in November. He rates reigning dual-Olympic gold medallist Christian Taylor as his greatest role model and would love to one day compete on that stage. The World Juniors would be the perfect stepping stone for O’Hanlon, who wanted to thank the people who have helped him along the way. “I would like to thank my family, the Alkira Sports Academy Program and Mark Jouvelet, Chloe Edwards and Robert Stevens for the support they’ve given me which has really helped.”

Club strives to unite community and end disadvantage By Nick Creely FOR as long as anyone can remember, sporting clubs have been integral to the fabric of Australian society. Sport contributes to a community’s character, and focuses primarily on engagement, pride and also success, but it also addresses social inequities and those who are disadvantaged. Success is not all about premierships; it’s also about creating an environment that anyone can buy into. For the Cranbourne Cricket, Football and Netball Clubs, a strong drive for community inclusion has compelled them to great heights - both on and off-field. On-field, Cranbourne is revered within the community for its success. But according to Cranbourne Football Club President Shane Baker, the focus is on community first, and the end result, on-field success. “A club’s successful when they are open to all people; regardless of age or gender, and give them somewhere to be a club person. “We try to really focus on local talent and local people; and in that, we give all people a chance to have some success. “Making sure there are opportunities for other people is equally important off-field as it is on-field. “We hope that others see us as not just a football, cricket and netball club, but as a club that is fully embracing of its community. “We’ve got a great group of people, and the morals that we set are important," Baker said. This was echoed by the cricket club's president, Andrew Ligt, who lauded the work done as a club in the community to ensure they have success. “As a collective group, committee, members and supporters, we all want success and for the club to grow. “This makes it easier to pull people together to achieve. “Success on and off-field creates a hunger and the want for more success." Ligt also praised the fantastic support given by community leaders and businesses ensuring the club thrives,
Cranbourne Football Club Seniors Premiers 2016. 159365 but also paying tribute to the volunteers who perhaps don’t get the recognition they deserve. “It’s hard to give enough recognition for about 200 hours a week of voluntary labour at the club, but that figure is conservative. “It’s hard to know exactly the amount of time each junior coach and team manager puts into their team. “Some members are individually contributing 30 hours plus a week. “It’s been a lot of fantastic support from our sponsors and a lot of fantastic support from the council," Ligt said. Last season, Cranbourne proved just how dominant they have become as a community club, taking out both the 2015/16 Turf 1 premiership in the Dandenong District Cricket Association and the 2016 senior football premiership in the South East Football Netball League. was plain for all to see, with the grand final as emotional as there could be in a community sport. This was followed up by an equally
inspiring, and drought-breaking premiership in senior football. With the weight of four grand final defeats hanging over their head, the Eagles turned the clock on Berwick, winning by 34 points. This never says die attitude has propelled the Eagles to stunning on-field success, and as a result, they have built a culture that exemplifies its values as a community driven club. But the club is also making inroads into women’s football and all abilities football, and in the process is improving its community and council engagement. Baker says bouncing back from the loss of four football premierships in a row is a testament to the club’s culture and community spirit. “Credit to all involved, from players, supporters, coaches and support staff, in winning that flag to be honest. “It’s just a wonderful achievement for the club and it’s truly brought a lot to the place. “There was just so many happy people, and there was obviously a lot of relief, but it was good. “And to combine that with the premiership in Turf 1, kind of showed how strong we are, and the potential we have across the board," Baker said. The clubs have announced a new joint sponsorship partner, Dacland, developers of Lockhaven Cranbourne. This sponsorship agreement allows the clubs to provide a successful, inclusive, diverse, family orientated atmosphere, and also allow them to build upon the community driven foundation they set. The club has also announced club stalwart Steve ‘Funky’ Miller as its coach for the 2016/17 cricket season. Funky, has had an extensive career with Cranbourne as an excellent bowler, and will now look to impart his wisdom onto the reigning champions. After initially appointing Jason Salerno to the helm, the new coach had to step down from the role on the eve of the season. Funky’s appointment to the helm ties in with the Eagles' aim to cater to local talent and ensure the club remains driven by its community.

15/16) to the open age height of 106.7cm sure to present its challenges “Things will get tougher over the higher hurdles, but for now I’m just concentrating on the juniors and trying to be the best athlete I can possibly be,” he said. “The Olympics is obviously the ultimate goal but there is so much work to be done before then.” Saluni-Kettle wanted to thank his coach Peter, his mum Rachel, and his number-one fan, his nan Dawn, for their amazing support.

THE hurdles keep on getting bigger for Casey Grammar’s Aiden Saluni-Kettle - but he just keeps on jumping and taking everything in his stride. The 15-year-old from Cranbourne took home the gold medal in the Boys-15, 100-metre hurdles at the recent SSV Secondary Track and Field Championships at Albert Park. Saluni-Kettle ran 13.23 seconds, smashing the previous meet record of 13.90 seconds set by Ringwood’s Stephen Dang in 2014. His performance added further gold to his win in last year’s State All-Schools 200-metre hurdles, getting to the top of the dais after a swag full of silver and bronze medals he has accumulated since he started racing competitively in the Under 13s. Medals at state and national carnivals, also at Little Athletics, school and country level have him well prepared for the tough environment to come. A new coaching regime has also brought a clearer picture to the landscape ahead. “I started in the Under 9s in the Little Athletics at Casey Cardinia,” Saluni-Kettle said. “I did all the events but loved the sprints, I just wanted to run fast, but I also loved to jump so the hurdles were perfect for me. It’s a difficult sport, very technical, there’s a lot of training involved but I love to keep on improving.” But his youthful enthusiasm for the sport went to a whole new level after a recent move to the Ringwood Athletics Club and new coach Peter Benifer. His new mentor introduced a tougher training program and refined a technique that had previously succeeded on raw talent alone. “He is a great hurdle coach,” Saluni-Kettle said of Benifer. “Until I joined at Ringwood I basically just trained when I felt like it, just did the odd run here and there, but that’s changed now. I get pushed by Peter and train with athletes that have been there and done it before and it motivates me

a strong chance of having his name read out at the National Draft next month. In the National Carnival, Poholke also showcased his notable talent as an inside midfield, averaging 14 disposals for Vic Country. Other big names to win awards was the highly-touted key-forward Josh Battle, small forward Sam Fowler and a draft bolter in Bailey Morrish. All three players are set to be transitioned into life as an AFL footballer later next month. In terms of football, the Rays had a mixed season in the TAC Cup. After winning the minor premiership after a near faultless home-and-away season, the Rays faltered in the finals, going out in straight sets.

THOMAS Glen and Myles Poholke have capped off stellar seasons for the Dandenong Stingrays, with both players joint winners of the Best and Fairest award on Friday 21 October. The event, which was held at Dingley International Hotel, was a great celebration of the achievements of the club in the TAC Cup in 2016, as well as recognition of those who have performed at a high level on an individual note. Glen, 19, had a consistent season in the midfield for the Rays, averaging 20 disposals a game and showcasing his impressive ability to use the ball by foot. The young gun was unlucky not too be drafted in the 2015 AFL Draft, but has given himself another chance to be on an AFL list next season. One game in particular stands out for the midfielder. In Round 5, Glen amassed 41 disposals in windy conditions, helping his side get over the line by 54 points against the Murray Bushrangers. Poholke, 18, had a brilliant season for the Rays as an inside midfielder, averaging 22 disposals, while he represented Vic Country and the AFL Academy throughout the season. What was also impressive for the young bull, was his ability to move forward and kick important goals this season. At the Draft Combine, Poholke also impressed, and is

Great weather for ducks By Russell Bennett and Nick Creely SATURDAY’S wild and wintry weather washed out almost all the cricket scheduled across the south east, with barely any games played throughout the entire West Gippsland Cricket Association (WGCA). There were only two games completed - one in B Grade, and one in C Grade - while all the other clashes throughout the competition were abandoned. Kooweerup (4/92) chased down St Francis Xavier’s 85 in just 14 overs in the B Grade clash, while in C Grade, Catani (7/145) easily got the better of Cardinia (113) at Rythdale Rec Reserve.
Premier grade fans were robbed of what was sure to be an enthralling round with Tooradin fixtured to host Cardinia, Pakenham to host Kooweerup in a rematch of last year’s grand final, Upper Beaconsfield to host local rivals Emerald, and Merinda Park to host Pakenham Upper/Toomuc. Fans and players alike now have to wait until Round 12 for the reverse fixture, which could prove to be seasondefining for some clubs. The weather also wrought havoc for the local turf competitions on Saturday, with both the Victorian Premier and Dandenong District Cricket Association (DDCA) weekend matches called off.
It has been a frustrating start for both competitions this season, with two full rounds marred by the weather in a matter of four weeks. Casey-South Melbourne was scheduled to face Carlton at Princes Park, but both clubs decided to call the game off at around 12.30pm after a delayed start, while Dandenong called its game off early at Shepley Oval against Greenvale. In the DDCA, frustrated sides were forced to abandon day two of the weekend’s games, with some sides on day one in an imposing position for a win, but ultimately having to settle for a draw. No decisions have been made as to
whether Victorian Premier Cricket will replay the round, with Round 1 already scheduled to be replayed on the reserve day - Sunday 6 November. Casey-South Melbourne will now face Camberwell at home on Saturday in the first of the two-dayers, while Dandenong will travel to Walter Galt Reserve to tackle Kingston Hawthorn. In the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association (VSDCA), the first day of the two-day clash between Endeavour Hills and Taylors Lakes was completely washed out. All aboard the mountainboard craze - it's a blast, dude By Russell Bennett DYLAN ‘Radface’ Warren is somewhat of a local pioneer in the fascinating world of mountainboarding, and now the Beaconsfield local has developed a new means to bring his sport to the masses. It involves incredible - at times unfathomable - tricks on every sort of terrain from dirt, to grass, to gravel, to pavement on a board that could best be described as a skateboard on steroids ... so it’s little wonder Warren is so excited to introduce his sport to the younger generation. He got his start in the sport 15 years ago, and now travels the world through it. “I used to go skateboarding at Gembrook skate park all the time, and a friend of mine had a mountain board he used to ride there,” he told the Gazette from one of his now usual haunts - the undulating track next to Lysterfield Lake - earlier this year. “He was always nagging me to have a try, and I eventually caved and had a try on it. “We went and rode some local hills in Emerald and I’ve been hooked since! “It was the ability to ride any terrain, anywhere. “You could go as fast as you want, slide, stack and it wouldn’t hurt as much as concrete. I enjoyed the freedom.
“Back then there were these horrible old boards that looked like billycarts pieced together and we didn’t even know there were other people who rode them. “Never in a million years did I think I’d be able to go overseas - through Europe, Asia and America.” Warren was in Sydney recently for a mountainboarding demonstration at the city’s Rides Festival. “We taught a couple of hundred kids how to mountainboard and sent them all down the hill and they were actually all really good - they all progressed throughout the day,” he said. “It seems to be that the younger they are the more confidence they have. “It’s really cool to see them develop into awesome little riders. “We’ve been doing a few events over the past three years or so - particularly this one event called the Beaconsfield Bash - and three years ago we had a group of kids who were quite young at the time and had just got into mountainboarding and now they’re turning 16 or 17 and they’ve developed into solid riders who can do some pretty serious tricks.” But the problem for mountainboarding - locally - is a lack of suitable venues. Picture: SUPPLIED ested anywhere from Melbourne to Warragul to get involved in the sport. “It’s quite a big deal because we’ve finally set up a mountainboard program that allows people to have a place to be able to ride,” Warren said. “The whole thing is that Mt Baw Baw has been looking for some summer activities because they need to be open all year round and mountainboarding is the perfect fit for that be-
cause it’s essentially snowboarding in the summertime. “They reached out to us and we’re working with them to develop a mountainboard program throughout the summer. Once a month we’ll be holding a special mountainboard day where we’ll go up there and teach mountainboard lessons and the kids will be able to ride the whole mountain.” Mt Baw Baw will host a ‘Learn to
Mountainboard’ event on 20 November. The event will include a professional demonstration session and learn-toride sessions, with chairlifts operating and boards for hire from Baw Baw Sports and Outdoors. Mulgrave too good HAMPTON PARK BOWLS IT was another mixed day for Hampton Park midweek bowlers on Tuesday. Division 1 had to play the ultra strong Mulgrave Country Club at home, while Division 3 travelled to the covered Willow Lodge. It was always going to be a tough ask against Mulgrave, with the clash being the fourth time the clubs had played each other in eight days. Although there was no lack of effort, Denise Eastick, Toni Sutton, Geoff Ladner and Neville Hendrie was the closest, losing 15-32, while Jen Sherry, Ann Westwell, Shane Collins and Chris Hendrie lost 7-43. Marion Battaglia, Helen Lambert, Andrew Brandolin and Ellen Smith went down 10-48. Hampton Park (1) 0-32 lost to Mulgrave CC (3) 16-123. Under the roof at Willow Lodge, Hampton Park’s Division 3 had a better day. Jim Westwell, Ron Beverly, Peter Hayden and Heather Naismith led all day for a team-lifting 33-9 win, while the other two teams showed their determination with Rhonda Diaper, June Damon, Brian Diaper and Geoff Ampt winning 1914 and Janice Collins, Lou Soligo, Ian Kitt and Ray Wood held on to win 23-21. Hampton Park (2) 16-75 defeated Willow Lodge (1) 0-44. After the tough day Tuesday, Christine Hendrie and Ellen Smith travelled to the Mount Eliza Bowls
Club to represent the Casey Bowls District in the Over 60s pairs. They started play at 9am against the Peninsula Bowls Division and after a tight game went down by five shots. Christine and Ellen had to wait for Flinders and Peninsula to finish which was won by Flinders by just 3 shots. It was 4.15pm when Casey played Flinders. This game was to decide who would go on and represent the region. If Christine and Ellen were to get through they would have to win by eight shots or more. The Hampton Park pair was 10 shots up with one end to play. Although one shot down and Ellen having the last bowl, she played it safe bowling halfway up the green. Our girls won by nine shots. It took a marathon 10 hours of bowling, waiting and bowling to become the Women’s over 60s Region Pairs winners. They will now progress to the state titles later this season. Well done Christine and Ellen. Saturday pennant may be a washout on results, as more than half the Section games need to be played for a result. Division 1 had an improved game although they still lost, by seven shots. Division 4 at Berwick had a loss, but three other games were drawn due to the weather and Division 6 game was cancelled when the Bayswater green was flooded overnight. At Pound Road, Division 1 played Upwey/Tecoma. The winning rink was Geoff Ladner, Peter

Life membership for living legend CRANBOURNE BOWLS THE Cranbourne Bowling Club congratulates Ray Boskell on his well-deserved Life Membership and truly recognises his service to the club and bowling prowess and a man who can truly be called a legend of the club. A very worthy life member, Ray Boskell joined the club in 1977 and since day one has been a tireless contributor to the club. Ray is a long-time citizen of Cranbourne who worked at the local post office for many years before retiring to playing bowls and spending more time with his wife and family. Not only has he served on various committees at the club including Grounds and a club house committee for many years, Ray has won many bowls titles at club and regional level. In his long bowls career, Ray has been club champion twice; mixed pairs champ; club pairs champ six times; WGBA pairs champ three times, champion of champ pairs and a member of seven premiership sides and many other awards. In his acceptance speech, Ray made special mention that he owes a lot of his success in bowls to fellow bowler and life-long best friend Allan Mickle. In results for this week's games, skip Shirley Venville put down her last bowl for the day and the score was tied at 60-all with the opposition skipper in a position to win the game on the last end with her final bowl. But she decided to not take the risk and settled for a draw to the relief of the Cranbourne side. Skip Cheryl Wright said after the game: “We were happy to get away with a draw against a good side. I was surprised and relieved that the opposition skip did not take her last bowl. I think she was more concerned about losing the game rather than winning it.” Meanwhile in Division 1 Open Cranbourne went down to Dandenong Club by 10 shots. Next week is a double header with games planned for both Tuesday and Thursday. SATURDAY All Cranbourne Saturday Pennant games were washed out this week. New Honda Civic on show By Alistair Kennedy HONDA has unveiled its tenth generation Civic hatchback at the recent Paris Motor Show. It won’t arrive in Australia until next year but it does give us a good segue into our recent test of the gen-10 Civic four-door sedan that went on sale here a few months back. Civic has been a staple of the Honda range since it made its debut in 1973 Civic. Not only is it the Japanese carmaker’s all-time biggest seller, it also sits fifth on the list of the world’s all-time biggest selling passenger cars. Given this pedigree it has been sad to see Civic sales slump so dramatically over the past couple of years. Circumstances beyond Honda’s control contributed significantly to this decline including the GFC, Thai floods and Japanese tsunami. Nor has it been helped by competing against three of Australia’s biggest sellers, Toyota Corolla, Mazda3 and Hyundai i30. While the arrival of the new Civic sedan has certainly re-kindled interest hatches are far more popular in the small car segment and Honda dealers will be counting the days until the arrival of the new five-door model sometime during the first half of 2017. come from a new Honda factory in Thailand, with the same design and specifications. Like many in its class the Civic sedan has a coupe-like profile, clearly aimed at attracting younger and less conservative buyers than before. Having said that there’s nothing there that’s likely to really turn heads. The price-leading Civic VTi gets 16-inch steel wheels. All others step up to alloys, 16-inch in the VTi-S, 17s in the others. The Civic RS comes with an integrated body kit, including a gloss black grille, rear spoiler, sunroof and sportier wheels. The interior has been redesigned and has a more elegant look and feel
than before with a level of comfort that’s rare in cars of this size. Civic sedan is also more spacious due to a combination of clever design work and an extra 45 mm in the external width to the car. It’s particularly noticeable in the rear seats which could easily pass for a car in the next size up. The boot is large (around 518 litres) with a flat floor and low loading height. All models have space-saver spare wheels. The dashboard is logically designed with a large touchscreen and a digital instrument panel. There are plenty of clever storage ideas. ered by the previous 1.8-litre naturally-aspirated 104 kW / 174 Nm petrol engine. The VTi-L, RS and VTi-LX get an all-new 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol unit with 127 kW and 220 Nm. For the first time in a Civic there is no manual gearbox with all models getting a CVT in place of the old fivespeed conventional automatic. The turbo engines 1.5-litre variants also gets paddle shifters. The dashboard display is a 7.0-inch colour touchscreen in all models. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto provide smartphone interface. However, they connect via USB cable rather than being wireless. Voice commands operate through either Siri Eyes Free or Google Voice.
Bluetooth phone and audio streaming are also standard. The premium VTi-LX gets dedicated satellite navigation, all other models rely on smartphone links. DAB+ radio is standard on VTi-L, RS and VTi-LX. In addition to the standard list of safety equipment (airbags, enhanced brakes and stability/traction control) all Civic variants get a reversing camera, emergency stop signal, tyre pressure warning and hill start assist. All models above the entry-level VTi also get front and rear parking sensors as well as LaneWatch which uses a camera mounted at the rear of the left-hand mirror to provide an 80-degree view of the left lane whenever the left indicator is activated. The top spec Civic VTi-LX takes safety to a higher level with the Honda Sensing package that includes Collision Mitigation Braking System; Road Departure Mitigation System; Forward Collision Warning; Lane Departure Warning; Lane Keeping Assist System; and Adaptive Cruise Control with Low-Speed Follow. The new turbo-petrol engine should be a major selling point. It’s quiet and refined with plenty of torque and low fuel consumption.
