By Casey Neill Raiders drove a car into the Rebels bikie gang headquarters in Dandenong South and torched it, sending the England Street premises up in flames. In contrast to the fire’s violent start, Dandenong police officer Senior Constable Tim Parker rescued a tiny black kitten from the building. Detectives from the anti-bikie Echo Taskforce are investigating the incident, which occurred about 4.25am on Friday 21 October. About 20 firefighters from the Dandenong and Springvale fire brigades attended. Investigators said no one was injured but the fire completely destroyed the outlaw motor cycle gang (OMCG) premises. Taskforce officers had raided the club house and three other premises on Wednesday 19 October following an affray in Dandenong during the week of 10 October. They arrested a 33-year-old man at the scene and charged him with affray and other matters, and seized drugs and clothing.

Safety shattered By Casey Neill A four-year-old girl is scared to go outside and “always crying” following an armed robbery at her family’s Dandenong North milk bar. She was asleep with her mum Yee when the raiders struck the Dunearn Road store about 7.30am on Sunday 25 September. “My husband was in the kitchen,” she said. “I heard a loud voice. I thought maybe someone was beating my husband. “I woke up and found my glasses. I ran outside with no shoes. “I saw my husband was safe.” He’d retreated into the home attached to the milk bar and locked the door.
He held it shut as two men armed with long kitchen knives tried to reach the terrified family. “They almost broke the door,” Yee said. “The noise was very loud. “At that time I called the police. My husband turned on the alarm. “They were very quick to take all they wanted and go. “They took money and cigarettes.” CCTV footage shows them jumping the counter to grab the items. Yee said her husband had put change in the cash box and stocked the cigarette stand just moments earlier. “My husband went back inside to enjoy the breakfast. Then the thieves came,” she said.
“Maybe they know how we run the business.” The family is now living in fear. “I’m very worried, very afraid,” she said. “Sometimes my husband is not here. “We come here, we just wanted the little one to have a very beautiful life.” Her “little one” cries when she hears loud voices and doesn’t want to go outside. “She’s crying, always crying,” she said. “I went to the kindergarten to pick up here, she is crying and the face is red. “In my heart, I don’t want to stay here. “I don’t think I’ll feel safe again.” The Chinese-born couple took on the business 10 months ago and installed a high-tech CCTV system.
“They don’t care,” Yee said. “In their eyes the camera is nothing.” About 10 minutes earlier, thieves matching the same description struck a milk bar in Coolavin Road, Noble Park. The owner was putting out a sandwich board when he noticed two men running toward the store’s front door, locked the door and remained outside. They fled after they failed to open the door. “The police came here and said a lot of milk bars, the robbers go inside,” Yee said. “We just want a safe life. “We work very hard.”

Red face over light fine By Casey Neill Motorists are continuing to see red over a controversial red light camera in Keysborough. Werner Lieberwirth wrote to the Journal after reading the 7 October story about the Springvale and Cheltenham roads “revenue-raiser”. “It happened to us - my wife and myself,” he said. He received a $389 fine and three demerit points after entering the intersection to turn right into Cheltenham Road at 11.46am on Saturday 24 September. “The arrow was yellow. As we had an extremely slow driver ahead of us, the arrow turned red at the halfway mark,” he said. “The duration of the arrow is very short there. As the car is in my wife’s name and I was driving, she is very upset about it. “She has been driving for 60 years and never
lost a demerit point. “As we are part-pensioners it’s a bit hard to digest.” Mr Lieberwirth’s story followed a complaint to the Journal from Lighthouse Christian Church and College senior minister and president Richard Warner in September. He called for one extra second on the rightturn green light, and urged other victims of the red light camera to join him in challenging the “revenue-raiser”. “I’ve got caught about five times in the past two years or so,” he said. “There isn’t enough time to turn right. “One more second on the right hand green light is all that is needed to make things reasonable.” But Road Safety Camera Commissioner John Voyage said driver behaviour and not a dodgy light sequence were to blame for red light camera fines.
He said his predecessor Gordon Lewis investigated the camera and found it operating correctly. In his report, Mr Lewis concluded that “the primary reason for the infringements that I viewed was driver impatience upon seeing the yellow arrow”. “Some motorists treated the yellow arrow as an extension of the green, and were ultimately detected entering the intersection against the red arrow,” he said. Mr Voyage said a red light infringement was only issued because a driver entered an intersection after the light had turned red. “Some people seem to misunderstand this, and incorrectly think that being in the intersection after the light turns red is an offence,” he said. Grateful to new home, Nazer finds place of honour By Casey Neill “The safe life that I was dying for my whole life, I found it only in Australia. Therefore I’m committed to do whatever I can do for this great country.” That commitment earned Dandenong’s Nazer Nazir a place on the Victorian Multicultural Honour Roll at Victoria’s Multicultural Awards for Excellence, held at Government House on Thursday 13 October. The annual awards are now in their 15th year and acknowledge and celebrate contributions to multicultural communities. Dandenong-based Southern Migrant and Refugee Centre (SMRC), where Mr Nazir has been shadowing chairman Brian Oates, picked up two awards. CEO Jenny Semple won an Award for Meritorious Service to the Community, which recognises outstanding commitment to Victoria’s multicultural community for at least 10 years. SMRC received a Certificate of Merit for Community Innovation for its Afghan Women’s Empowerment program. Mr Nazir’s award recognised a newly-arrived migrant or refugee who played an outstanding leadership and volunteering role, demonstrated cultural diversity values and contributed to making Victoria a harmonious multicultural community. “Nazer has helped to bring Afghans living in Victoria into the mainstream community, improving their sense of belonging,” the judges said. The 36-year-old arrived in Australia from Afghanistan in 2014 and is studying a masters in law and development at Melbourne University. As well as serving as a mentee at SMRC, he is a co-founder of the Afghan Australian Initiative. “It was established in 2015 and I was the first president. Currently I’m the secretary,” he said. “We have something similar to SMRC in a smaller picture. “We work in the area of culture, education and public awareness.” In March and July the group held school conferences for dozens of students and is planning more. “We try to improve peace-building at schools, teaching reconciliation, conflict management, forgiveness and anger management,” he said.
Jail for Apex Gang link teen A Noble Park teen with suspected Apex gang connections is behind bars after he was arrested over aggravated burglaries and evading police. He and a Narre Warren boy were arrested by Casey CIU detectives. One of the teens faces 58 separate charges. Officers captured one of the young crooks when his mother called police after he breached his bail-ordered curfew. They extracted the other one from an Endeavour Hills home where he was in hiding. Casey CIU Detective Senior Constable Angela Butler said Apex members tended to work in groups. “They work in a pack and go around stealing cars and doing daytime burglaries, using the stolen cars to conduct burglaries and evading the police,” she said. Det Sen Const Butler said police needed people to report suspicious behaviour as soon as they saw it. “Don’t be afraid to call triple zero and tell police about what you have seen, it’s what we are here for.”
Taxi man mugged A man has been injured after he was hit with a baton and robbed as he got into a taxi in Dandenong North. Police released a CCTV image following the armed robbery which occurred about 4.15am on Tuesday 18 October. The 48-year-old victim was entering the taxi on Belmont Avenue when the man armed with a baton approached him and demanded money. The thief struck the victim with the baton before stealing his mobile phone. He got into a dark-coloured vehicle, possibly a Ford sedan, which turned right onto Oakwood Avenue. The victim sustained minor injuries. His attacker is described as dark-skinned and was wearing a face mask and a chequered cap at the time.

Ms Semple has been the SMRC CEO for almost 20 years. The judges said she’d demonstrated an unwavering commitment to improving the lives of
culturally and linguistically divers (CALD) communities. “Her innovative projects include driver education for refugees, homework support to assist young CALD secondary school students, and the creation of a diverse seniors care program that provides qualified bilingual workers in over 60 languages,” they said. Ms Semple also brought together youths from different cultures to restore a motor vehicle. “As well as learning new skills, the group developed a shared sense of identity that broke down previously held animosities,” they said. Police are investigating a suspicious fire that tore through a Dandenong North home in windy conditions. A neighour saw flames and alerted emergency services to the single-storey house fire in Neasham Drive just before 3am on Sunday 16 October. “By the time the CFA got it under control the whole house was gone,“ Greater Dandenong CIU Detective Senior Constable Tony Lavars said. “The fire is being treated as suspicious as there as no one believed to be in the house at the time - or should have been in the house at the time. “There was no trace of flammable liquids or accellerants, it’s most likely just available materials were the cause.“ The home’s single occupant, a man in his 30s who’d lived there for 10 years, was away camping at the time.

Grand pioneer was worthy citizen What’s In a Name delves into the fascinating stories and personalities behind some of the city’s bestknown street names. This week the Journal looks at Springvale’s Harris Street, named for a longstanding city councillor. Henry James Edgar Harris was born in Marden, South Australia. He was known as Edgar and for more than 50 years lived on a Princes Highway property called Springfield, opposite today’s Harrisfield Shopping Centre. Mr Harris was elected to Dandenong Shire Council in 1910 “at a comparatively early age” and served with distinction as a North Riding representative continuously for just on 30 years, the Journal reported in 1947. He married Catherine Harris at St James’ Roman Catholic Church in Elsternwick in 1895. The couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at Springfield on 25 February 1945 with their five daughters, three sons and 22 of their 24 grandchildren. Two were away serving in the RAAF.
WHAT’S IN A
NAME The Journal at the time described them as “grand old pioneers”. They lived in Dandenong “out beyond the old stone bridge” when they first married but “have spent practically the whole of their married lives at Harrisfield where they are loved and respected by a host of friends”. During his time on council, Mr Harris was shire president several times and was renowned for his thorough knowledge of the Local Government Act. He was an old member of the Springvale Masonic Lodge and a Springvale Recreation Reserve trustee up to the time of his unexpected death in Dandenong District Hospital on 3 June 1947.
As well as Harris Street bearing his name, Harrisfield in the western part of Noble Park was named after the councillor in 1926. The opening of a new post office in a general store marked the occasion. Mrs Catherine Harris died at Springfield on 7 March 1954, aged 84. The Journal on 17 March described her as one of Harrisfield’s finest and most respected old identities. “Mrs Harris was a worthy partner to one who did so much in the public life of that area,” the paper reported. “Quiet, friendly and unassuming, the late Mrs Harris endeared herself to all in her lifetime in the district - a life-time enriched by many kindly and thoughtful acts. “She was a wonderful mother to her large family of five daughters and three sons, all wellknown in this district.” Garnar and Sons also took charge of her service, held at St Anthony’s Church in Noble Park. She was laid to rest at Springvale Botanical Cemetery.
He was 74 years old. The flag over Dandenong Town Hall was flown at half-mast “as a tribute to a worthy citizen”. WJ Garnar and Son conducted a private funeral at Springvale Botanical Cemetery on 5 June 1947. His remains were laid to rest with those of his mother in the Church of England portion of the cemetery, and adjoining the grave of former council colleague Frank Audsley. At the following council meeting, councillors stood in silence for a minute. Then-shire president Andrew Ericksen said that in the many years he had been associated with municipal life, Mr Harris had proved a marvellous councillor. Mr Ericksen’s own association with Mr Harris dated back to 1912. He described him as “gracious and kind in all his ways”. Alexander Watt Bowman said he found Mr Harris one of the best helps a new councillor could have when he was first elected. He was very experienced, very sincere in his purpose, and most helpful to him at all times.

The officer had been promised $20,000 to complete the deal and was given two syringes of “liquid G” or GHB to immobilise the victim during the kidnapping. Just after midnight on 20 August 2015, Oorloff installed tracking devices on the Macko’s cars – a day after discussions with the police officer. He had provided photos, work details, movements of the victim and his family as well as details on the home’s security to the officer. In a subsequent police search of Oorloff ’s home and clinic, items such as $2000 cash, batteries, a tracking device, and a syringe of GHB were seized. In the kitchen was 24 grams of cannabis and a round of ammunition, and 30 grams of methamphetamine. There was also ‘ice’ found in 17 plastic bags, as well as digital scales and a grinder, and texts and calls suggestive of trafficking on Oorloff ’s phone. Judge Bourke stressed that Oorloff was not charged with incitement to murder, and so would not be sentenced on that basis. He said he struggled to link Oorloff ’s diagnosed ADHD and obsessive-compulsive disorder to the “serious and disturbing” offending. It was noted the accused’s “very limited” criminal history but also his limited insight into the seriousness of his plan. Oorloff had genuine prospects of rehabilitation but was unlikely to able to continue his profession, Judge Bourke said. Oorloff was jailed for six years and three months – with a non-parole period of four years and three months.

A Noble Park man has been jailed over a “serious and disturbing” plot to kidnap his partner’s ex which he disclosed to an undercover police officer. Adrian Oorloff, 48, had told the officer to deliver the intended victim Richard Macko to a rural property where the accused said he would “burn the body” in a “cremation unit”, Judge Michael Bourke of the Victorian County Court said during the sentencing on 19 October. The successful Keysborough-based chiropractor had pleaded guilty to charges of incitement to kidnap, trafficking methamphetamine and possessing GHB and cannabis, as well as three summary offences. He said that Oorloff had been driven to act in an “extravagantly criminal and sinister way” against Mr Macko and his family in July and August 2015. During that six week period, the Macko family were in hiding and moved to 14 different locations. The victim described the feeling of “blood draining out of my body” when he realised how serious the treat was. “I can’t comprehend how this could happen to me.” There was no evidence that Oorloff ’s partner played a role in the plot, the judge found. In several meetings, Oorloff had unveiled his plan to a covert police officer and paid a $5000 down-payment to the officer to deliver Mr Macko to him. Mr Macko was then to “disappear without trace”, Oorloff told the officer. At a Skye property, police found a device matching a “cremation unit” that Oorloff described to the officer. According to the property’s owner, the device had been delivered there in July 2015. He had been told by Oorloff that it was a “pizza oven”.

“I used to swim a lot and I enjoy the water,” she said. “In the water it seems with the exercises they’re a lot more strenuous. “It makes you work a bit harder.” Ms Wickham said about six people attended regularly and that more people were welcome. “Apart from the social contact – we’re like kids, really, it’s great to play together – it’s also good mental stimulation,” she said.

A Dandenong gym and social session is offering fitness and fun for the blind and vision-impaired. Dandenong Oasis is hosting a Blind Sports and Recreation Victoria gym and water aerobics program each Monday during school terms from 11am. Margaret Wickham has been attending for three or four years. “I wouldn’t go to gym on my own,” she said. “We alternate between gym and the pool, so it makes it a lot more fun. “Our gym program includes half an hour of boxing as well, which is great fun. We mix it up quite a bit. “Our instructor is very encouraging. “He doesn’t set big goals, he always comments on how good we’re doing. “We just gradually step it up as time progresses.” A BYO lunch and a game of swish follows the session. “We can hear the ball, it has bottle caps in it,” Ms Wickham said. “People can hear the ball. “At least half the ones that play are totally blind. Some of us have some vision. “You have to judge where the ball is to hit it by hearing where it is. “We actually hit the ball under the wall in the middle of the table.” There’s “no aerial stuff ” involved, Ms Wickham laughed. “It just goes along the top of the table,” she said. “The good players are really fast. “You need good reflexes and you really need quite good concentration. “You tire quite quickly just because of the mental concentration needed, I think. “As soon as you start day dreaming you’ve had it!” Doveton’s Karren Martin also took up the program a few years ago. “I actually used to play table tennis when I went to school,” she said. “I thought, because I can’t play normal table

Silverleaf Ward candidate Rhonda Tannous shot down rumours being circulated by her rivals that she was not a Greater Dandenong ratepayer. The Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) requires local government candidates to own property in the municipality in which they nominate. Ms Tannous told the Journal she owned a house in Dandenong North. “I take it as a compliment. They obviously think I’m a threat,” she said. At his final Greater Dandenong Council meeting, retiring councillor John Kelly recalled the time he stitched up councillor assistant Jo Thorn. He told seniors at a dance that she was a champion ballroom dancer and had won a
national championship in her native New Zealand. “I then left,” he said with a laugh. “I think Jo got back to work at 6pm that night! She had all these guys lined up to dance with her.” Jo Thorn might be plotting revenge of sorts on retiring councillor John Kelly. Councillor Jim Memeti told the final Greater Dandenong Council meeting for the term that she had plans to buy two budgies for the office. “She wants to name them John and Kelly,” he said. Spouses offer support and a dose of reality, councillor Roz Blades told the final Greater Dandenong Council meeting for the term. She often tells husband Terry about her day “and he’s reading a book”. “I say ‘you’re not interested are you?’ and he says ‘no’,” she said. “I probably regret that I never supported Yvonne (Herring) when she wanted to be mayor,” councillor Peter Brown revealed at the final Greater Dandenong Council meeting before the 22 October election. “We make mistakes, big mistakes.”

Huey flies high A Dandenong icon is back up where it belongs. The Vietnam War-era helicopter at Dandenong RSL lost one of its rotor stay cables in a storm earlier this year. Membrey’s in Dandenong lowered the Bell UH-1 Iroquois to the ground for repairs. Being up in the weather for 13 years had also ruined the upper surface paintwork, so the helicopter went to Pakenham’s United Panels for a makeover. The helicopter type’s nickname Huey came into common use during the Vietnam War. The RSL sub-branch’s president John Wells said many interstate and international visitors had been to Dandenong to pay their respects, and Huey’s absence was noticed. There were emails and telephone calls, even one from a three-year-old who told him to ‘Put it back. Up there’. Now Huey is back. “In Dandenong’s history, the Dandenong ham and bacon pig down at the market is an important
symbol, and we think Huey is right up there with him,” Mr Wells said. “There are still people who don’t know where the RSL is, but they all know where ‘Huey on a stick’ lives.” Mr Wells said Huey was no longer quite in his original colours. The Australian side, facing the Dandenong Plaza, carries a New Zealand flag on the door to signify the NZ in ANZAC, and carries the number of a helicopter shot down in Vietnam with the loss of a crewman. The Stud Road side carries the US Army livery that Huey originally wore, with the addition of the old South Vietnamese flag. Mr Wells said the red crosses that adorn the chopper showed its lifesaving role. “This helicopter was a ‘dust-off ’, or CASEVAC, fitted out to help evacuate wounded soldiers from the battlefield,” he said. “He went into harm’s way completely unarmed. “In his day, Huey saved lives.” 1231106-ACM25-16

More than 230 people enjoyed the art on offer at an annual Noble Park exhibition. The 11th Noble Park Community Centre Art Show on Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 October featured hundreds of paintings and sculptures. Organiser Shelly Kemp said the turnout and community response were great. “It’s probably the most people we’ve had through on our weekend in a while,” she said. Repeat entrant Isobel Hamill won the open section with her landscape oil painting called Approaching Storm. “She was really excited about it, she even sold a couple of her works as well,” Ms Kemp said. The show also featured a tribute to Noble Park botanical artist and show founding member Fred Woodman, who died on 16 September. “We hope to continue a tribute to him throughout the years and possibly do some sort of award that symbolises him and his work,” Ms Kemp said. She thanked the show’s volunteers, who “are probably the best thing about our show”.
It’s official – Kalesha Morgan is a good scout. Actually, the Dandenong North 18-year-old is one of the best. She received a Queen Scout award from Victorian Governor Linda Dessau’s husband Tony Howard, on behalf of the Queen, at the Dandenong Showgrounds on Saturday 15 October. The Lyndale Secondary College spent the past three years earning badges to achieve the honour. “It’s the highest award in the Venturer section and it’s the highest award a youth member can get,” she said. “Now I’m starting Rovers. “I started Joeys when I was six. “My parents have been involved since before I was born.” Kalesha planted trees to save the regent honeyeater, canoed 60 kilometres down the Murray River, played softball and helped a special needs Cub to find his feet. She researched Dandenong’s history, attended
a Greater Dandenong Council meeting, volunteered at a wildlife shelter, and much more. A four-day four-wheel drive expedition rounded out her efforts. “We were 6km from finish and a wheel fell off,” she said, laughing. “We were stranded on the edge of the desert for two hours.” Kalesha said she’d made friends from around the world along the way. “I hope to get my Baden Powell Award, which is the award that Rovers can achieve,” she said. “If I get that I’ll be the first one in the group to achieve all the awards a Scout can get. “It’s named after the founder of scouting. “The Baden Powell Award is completely selfdriven and you have to organise everything. “I’m hopefully going to become a Joey Scout leader and look after the young ones.” She said scouting would always be part of her life. “I hope that when I get married, if I have kids that my kids will enjoy it as much as I do.”

It’s a free country says Chea over racist slurs By Casey Neill Greater Dandenong Council candidate Youhorn Chea is unfazed by racist messages scrawled on his campaign posters. The sign at a bus stop at Heatherton and Springvale roads in Springvale now bears the words “Asian’s scum rats” in large, red writing. “This is a democratic country,” the Lightwood Ward incumbent said. “If you don’t want to vote for me, don’t.” Cr Chea said he wasn’t worried about the vandalism and it wouldn’t affect his campaign for reelection. “This is a free country. I respect democracy,” he said.
Paperbark Ward candidate Brad Woodford spoke out about the incident, which followed the Journal’s story on 7 October about a racist text message sent to Lightwood Ward hopeful Gagandeep Singh. The anonymous text told the Indian-born Australian citizen to go back to his s***** country and make it as beautiful as Australia. Mr Woodford described the message as disgraceful and condemned the vandalism on Cr Chea’s poster. He said the racist incidents were highly disappointing in a municipality that was so multicultural. “You’d have thought in 2016 we might all be a

little better educated and aware that any form of racism is simply not acceptable,” he said. “Yet it seems we still have a long way to go to win the war on this.” Greater Dandenong was among only a handful of municipalities across the state to stick with inperson voting for the Saturday 22 October election. Gambling awareness events bring hope to addicts Gambling is in the spotlight in Springvale this month. The Springvale Indo-Chinese Mutual Association (SICMAA) with the Multicultural Centre for Women’s Health (MCWH) organised three events to mark Responsible Gambling Awareness Week, which runs from Monday 17 to Sunday 23 October. A free expo at Springvale Learning and Activities Centre (SLAC) will round out the calendar on Friday 28 October. The event titled Life is Hope and Possibilities will help to raise awareness about the importance of gambling responsibly. On Thursday 20 October, SICMAA hosted an interactive event targeted at parents titled What Should I Do? A Vietnamese speaking educator from MCWH led a discussion about issues surrounding online gambling and teenagers’ high mobile device usage. On Friday 21 October, the organisations hosted a walk at the Kokoda Track Memorial Walk,
known as the 1000 steps, in Upper Ferntree Gully. A picnic lunch and discussion followed, focusing on responsible gambling and balancing betting with other social and entertainment activities. Bic Gresty, a Vietnamese counsellor at SICMAA, said the organisation and MCWH were delighted to present the events. “We hope that the local community can come along to support one or all of the events and learn about what it means to gamble responsibly and some important tips to reduce the potential for harm from gambling,” she said in the lead-up to Responsible Gambling Awareness Week. The week is a partnership between Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation and local government, the gaming industry and community groups. The foundation’s chief executive, Serge Sardo, said the events were great examples of how local communities could talk about what it meant to gamble responsibly. “We encourage friends, family members, parents, teachers, sporting coaches and everyone in
the community to have a conversation about ways to reduce the potential for harm from gambling,” he said. “The significant increase in online betting and advertising has made it especially important to talk to young people about responsible gambling. “Gambling is very visible now in our community and if people are planning to gamble, we want them to be informed about the practical ways to gamble without harm. “Being informed allows individuals, the community and industry to make appropriate decisions about their gambling behaviour and for those who might be experiencing issues to know there is help available.” The foundation recommends gamblers know how to set time and money limits when better, keep track of the money they’re spending, take regular beaks when betting, and to never put off their friends for a flutter. Twenty wanted criminals are off the streets, thanks to the new Divisional Response Unit (DRU). Detective Senior Sergeant John Bergin established the 20-member unit at Dandenong police station in late August to tackle drug crime and fugitives in Greater Dandenong, Casey and Cardinia. “Since we’ve started, we’ve picked up 20 persons of interests with outstanding warrants,” he said. “A significant amount of them are from what’s appeared in the paper, 11 of them.” The crew has also hit drug trafficking hard. Police executed a warrant at a home in Ambrie Crescent, Noble Park, on Thursday 6 October. They uncovered a large quantity of ice, cannabis and a firearm, and charged a 27-year-old man with trafficking and possessing drugs of dependence and possessing a prohibited weapon. On Thursday 13 October, they executed warrants in Carlisle Road, Hallam, and uncovered cocaine, methamphetamine and illegal prescription medication. They charged a 22-year-old man with possessing and trafficking drugs of dependence. The following day, a warrant executed in Buckley Street, Noble Park, found heroin, cannabis, an imitation firearm and an “offensive weapon”. A 31-year-old man will answer charges of trafficking and possessing drugs of dependence, and possessing prohibited weapons. Det Sen Sgt Bergin encouraged residents to keep an eye out for signs of cannabis-producing, hydroponic grow houses and clandestine laboratories, generally used to manufacture ice. “We obviously rely on public information,” he said.

Bollywood treat set for cinemas By Casey Neill Dandenong’s Faiz Sharif has made his mark on a locally filmed Bollywood-style movie. He’s the editor and executive producer for WHO, which means ‘that’ in Hindi. Endeavour Hills husband and wife and firsttime filmmakers Deo and Kusum Narayan produced the story of a heartbroken girl who gets involved with a mentally-unstable man accused of murder. Mr Sharif works as an editor for cooking shows including Everyday Gourmet and Good Chef, Bad Chef and Ms Narayan approached him for help. “We fixed up the minor issues in the film, fixed up the issues in the script and re-shot 10 to 20 per cent of the film,” he said. “Last week we finally managed to finish the film.” Its release is pencilled in for January. “We filmed quite a lot in Dandenong,” Mr Sharif said. “The main reason why I took up the project was they are nice people and I like to hang out with them. “It rubs off, the goodness. “It comes across in the film. “Anybody that’s approached them for work as actors and crew, they’ve taken them on board.” He said the film had the drama, song and dance of Bollywood with an Aussie twist. “Most of the actors are first-timers. This is their biggest break,” he said. “What I appreciate about Deo is the fact that he did not go to film school. “He just did a short course. “As a first-time filmmaker, to complete a feature film is itself an achievement. “Many people start. “The hard work’s paid off.” Mr Sharif moved to Australia from India in 2005 to work. “I was working for two to three years but I always had this passion towards film and making films,” he said. “To make it happen I used to go to work in the

With WOH finished, Mr Sharif will now return to his own film project, called The Fastest Indian. “It’s a film about a group of Indians living in Melbourne. They take part in a go-carting race,” he said.
“It’s more like a documentary-style film but it’s fictional.” Mr Narayan said his aim with WOH was to reflect the values of migrants and their journey in settling down in Australia and integrating with the broader community. “I personally feel that the most challenging issue people throughout the world are facing is integration,” he said. “If my films are able to make even a slightest
dent in this problem, mine and my fellow colleagues’ time and money will have seen its worth.” The Narayans will launch a CD featuring songs from the movie and screen a trailer for the film at Nazareth College in Noble Park North at 1pm on Sunday 6 November. There’ll be entertainment from dance troupe Bollydazzlers and singers who voiced the soundtrack.

New show generation rides in By Casey Neill Alex Morgan has been a Dandenong Show fixture for more than 60 years, and is known to those involved with the annual event as “grandpa”. But his great-grandchildren and a herd of ponies are threatening to steal his limelight. The Journal met his daughter Lisa Wanless, granddaughter Amy Matthey, and six of his greatgrandchildren ahead of this year’s show, on Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 November. “My mother (Janice) got her first Shetland, which became my Shetland, when I was two,” Lisa said. “Fifty-one years ago we started breeding and showing Shetlands, which then turned into miniatures as well. “I have 13 grandchildren at the moment, and two on the way. “They all want to be involved.” Lisa’s sister, Jayne Stuchbery, is also part of the pony world. “I think mother and my sister will be judging and stewarding at the show this year,” Lisa said. “It depends on what they need.” Lisa has eight horses on her Pakenham property, a combination of miniatures and Shetlands, and Janice keeps one miniature at her Narre Warren North home. “She’s a life member of the miniature ponies,” Lisa said. “We’d always had ponies and horses as kids growing up. “For some reason she wanted to show for herself but, of course, the Shetlands and the miniatures are small and easy for her to handle. “She’s had a lot of success breeding and showing over the years, winning numerous prizes at the Royal as well as at Dandenong Show.” Asked what made a good show pony, Lisa pointed out one of her Shetlands as “very typical of an English Shetland, where it’s got very heavy legs”. “She’s quite stocky in her build,” she said. “That red and white one, she’s got finer legs more like a pony legs. “I go more for the heavy legs because that’s
Seline and Izabelle with Shetland pony Dory. 160466 what a Shetland should be, like what was in the Shetland Isles, whereas the finer ones are more how they’ve bred them here because people want them more like ponies. “These were originally bred to go down in the mines in Ireland and Scotland. “Out in the wild, on the Shetland Isles, they roam around and they’ve got to be very sturdy because it’s all rocky there.”

And little boy,” Lisa said. “So many kids don’t get that interaction now and they’ve only got a little back yard. “They just have a ball here.” She said the Dandenong Show was also a great
opportunity for kids to interact with farm animals. “It always amazes me when little kids, you ask them where milk comes from and they say ‘the carton’ or the ‘milk bar’,” she said. “They’ll have a bit of sheering going on or milking of cows and they have the animal nursery.”

VILLAGE GRAND OPENING SUCCESS Clyde North’s newest display village held its spectacular grand opening event at Clydevale Estate recently. Members of the public were invited into more than 30 of the display homes on-site to admire the innovative designs from some of Australia’s most recognised premier builders. The family fun day event attracted a record number of potential homebuyers from all around Victoria with hundreds of visitors coming to check out the display village throughout the day. The wide variety of home designs on offer has positioned this display village as a stand out within the region. Whether visitors were casually browsing or seriously in the market for a new home, the style and quality of homes on display left everyone feeling inspired. Pretty is more than pot luck Pretty up a pot and fill it with seedlings for a splash of spring colour, or for a mini garden of fresh herbs. Create a unique pot, or give old pots a new lease on life with a few coats of spray paint. Car enamel gives a long-lasting finish and it is often possible to pick up obsolete colours for just a few dollars. Put a shallow layer of stones in the bottom of the pot for extra drainage and use a good quality potting mix, preferably with
slow release fertiliser and wetting agent, to plant up the seedlings. Petunias and nasturtiums come in a variety of colours and are both hardy, prolific and long-flowering, making them a great choice for a single variety pot. And as a bonus nasturtium leaves and flowers can be used in salads. Alternatively, mix and match a variety of plants combining colour and form to create a pretty pot of colour. Try primulas, polyanthus, sweet William,
lobelia and dwarf marigolds, just to mention a few of the summer-flowering varieties which will grow well in pots. Plan ahead and these can even make ready-made Christmas gifts. Why not make up a herb pot for the cook in the family! Try two or three mint varieties together, or parsley, thyme, mint, basil, sweet marjoram and chives will mix and match beautifully to put fresh herbs within easy reach of the kitchen.

Message from the Premier This summer is forecast to be a dangerous fire season. Fire Action Week is the time for all Victorians to begin preparing. Many communities throughout Victoria have been battling with persistent rain and rising flood waters. This rainfall has provided the stimulus for increased growth of vegetation in forested, bush and grass fire areas across the state. As summer intensifies, these regions will dry out quickly, increasing the risk of uncontrollable fires, especially over the Christmas and summer holiday period. Emergency services are working with communities, businesses, local councils and government to reduce the risk in your area, while
ensuring resources are in place to respond to all emergencies. However, it is up to you to understand the risk in your area, monitor conditions and take responsibility for your own safety and the safety of your household. Taking steps to get prepared before summer means you know what to do when a fire starts. Talk to your family and friends about how you’ll know when to leave and where to go to stay safe. It’s up to everyone to be ready Fire Action Week, 23-30 October, is Victoria’s annual fire planning and preparation week. The Bushfire Natural Hazards CRC Seasonal Outlook has predicted an above average fire season for Victoria. Traditionally, Victoria’s worst period for fire is in January and February. Right now, forecasts show that there is potential for an above average fire season in Victoria in the west of the state. Fire Action Week is a great time to increase understanding of the local fire risks, prepare properties and talk to other members of the household about what everyone will do to stay safe from fire. Making informed decisions is vital for safety during a fire. Now is the best time to understand fire risk and get prepared, not when a fire starts. This week, talk to family, friends and neighbours about the fire risks and make plans for what to do on hot, dry, windy days. · Find out where to check Fire Danger Ratings (Vic Emergency website and app). Over summer they need to be checked daily to understand the fire risk. As ratings increase, so does the risk of fire. · Tune in to ABC local radio, commercial and designated community radio stations or Sky News TV, phone the Victorian Bushfire Information Line (1800 240 667), visit emergency. vic.gov.au, and download the VicEmergency app. Warnings are also available on VicEmergency’s Twitter (@vicemergency) and Facebook (facebook.com/vicemergency), and CFA’s Twitter (@CFA_Updates) and Facebook (facebook. com/cfavic) · On hot, dry, windy days, fires will start and spread quickly. Dandenong West Primary School is leading the way in drawing the wider community into school life. It picked up the Education and Early Childhood Award at Victoria’s Multicultural Awards for Excellence, which was held at Government House on Thursday 13 October. The annual awards are now in their 15th year and acknowledge and celebrate contributions to multicultural communities. Judges said that Dandenong West “serves as a best practice example of community engagement in learning”. They acknowledged the school’s community hub, its connections with libraries and civic centres, its playgroups and men’s shed, and classes for adults in English, computers, cooking and craft. Principal Bev Hansen said the school was immensely proud and honoured. “We believe it is a school’s responsibility to
serve the community in which it is located,” she said. “While our core focus is student learning, we understand that this is best achieved working in partnership with families and the wider community.” Ms Hansen said her students came from more than 50 countries, 93 per cent had a language background other than English and a third were likely to be refugees. “Our families are typically newly arrived families, with a large proportion having been in Australia for less than two years,” she said. She said war many of them were affected by isolation, family dislocation, interrupted schooling and poverty. “It is essential that, as a school, we develop our own understanding of the consequences of such circumstances and work to develop a school environment that is welcoming and supportive,” she said. “Our focus on cultural diversity supports our students academically, emotionally and socially.”

Striking lucky with defence win By Casey Neill A family business in Dandenong South is helping to build one of the world’s most advanced fighter jets. This project and other international achievements earned AW Bell the Manufacturing Award at the 37th Governor of Victoria Export Awards, presented on Thursday 6 October. CEO Sam Bell’s grandfather Alan William Bell started the business in Oakleigh in 1952. “He was a pattern-maker by trade,” he said. “The company started off as a pattern shop and tool room. “My father (Geoff) took over in 1983.” AW Bell moved to Dandenong South in 1997. “My father has retired three times,” Sam said. “I took over in November 2014. “Now he’s as retired as I’ve ever seen him. “Some weeks don’t see him at all. “I think he’s happy with the way things are going. “It’s great to have that resource available to us. We still get him to come and look at jobs.” Sam explained that the company had two main business streams. “One is producing investment and sand castings that we machine in-house,” he said. “That’s probably about 80 per cent of our revenue.” In the investment arm, they make parts from wax, coat them in ceramics and resins, and melt the wax out to form a mould. They pour liquid metal inside, break off the mould and clean up the finished part. Sandcasting involves building a tool from wood and covering it in sand that sets hard to create a mould. The other is AW Bell machinery, which is entirely export-based. “We design and supply equipment to the investment casting and sandcasting industries

The rest spread between South America, Asia and Europe. “In North America we are the name that comes to mind when you think of grinding equipment.” “This year, most likely 15 per cent of our money will come from exports to North America. “Next year that’s going to grow even further. “In 2017-‘18 we’ll see about 40 to 50 per cent.” AW Bell has grown its name in the US by do-
ing the obvious - going to the US. Sam even spent a year there. “The only way we can break down those distance barriers is getting in their face and becoming another local supplier,” he said. He said the travel was also an opportunity to see what the industry was doing. Geoff saw the writing on the wall for the auto industry in about 2006. “We started actively chasing more work in the
defence industry,” Sam said. They eyed a more skilled and complex market. “The type of work that isn’t going to go to China and India, or low-cost countries,” he said. “It was a lot longer road than what we expected to break into it. “Normally we’re producing parts within about 18 months. “It was about seven years to break into the defence industry in the US.” AW Bell is now producing parts for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter. “We are still more competitive than their local sources on the highly complex products,” he said. “We get face-to-face and help them to solve their problems. “They don’t see that collaboration with their local suppliers. “That astounds me. “To me, it’s just good customer service.” The F-35 project has opened other opportunities in the defence supply chain. “We’ve proven ourselves on this project,” he said. “Normally we come onto a project that’s running behind schedule and with quality issues and turn it around. “It’s really exciting to see a company based in Melbourne doing what we’re doing, providing high-quality, complex castings for the most technically-advanced fighter jet. “That’s going to be our platform to really grow the business now.” Commercial director Vinesh Karan said the company had a US-based broker. “She’s looking for new opportunities and doing a lot of follow-up correspondence,” he said. “They feel like they can deal with someone locally. “In the next five years we’ll need a full-time AW Bell sub-employee over there or a foundry, a replica of our business here.”

Jubilee crowd delights traders By Casey Neill More than 28,000 people flocked to Dandenong Market to celebrate its 150th birthday. The Dandenong icon hosted jubilee celebrations on Sunday 16 October, featuring food, rides, entertainment and more. Louise Noy was among the revellers and was pleased to see a “very big crowd” show up for the occasion. “I’m glad that they’re recognising how it got where it is today,” she said. Her family was involved in the journey from livestock market to the huge variety of stalls on offer today. Louise’s grandfather Joseph had a dairy farm and sold his cows at the market. “Then when they retired, my dad (Hank) had his own farm as well and he used to take the cows there,” she said. “I was always there as a kid. “I moved away from the area, but I always went there when I was on holidays. “It was always a place that I always wanted to go back and set up my own stall.” So 15 years ago, she did just that. “I have a huge range of dog treats. It’s a smorgasbord,” she said. Louise also stocks shampoos, collars, leads, and information on dogs. “I do know what I’m on about. I’m there to help you keep your dog happy and healthy. “I just love pets. “It was a hobby and then I went into it full time.” A statue unveiling will bring three months of Dandenong Market birthday celebrations to a close on Friday 4 November. SPORT Latest signing looks set to secure T20 showing By Nick Creely The Dandenong District Cricket Association has been hit by a Hale storm in the form of a current English international batsman. Adding further intrigue to Buckley Ridges’ astonishing signing of David Hussey, it has pulled off yet another remarkable marquee signing that will now see it as heavy favourite to win this year’s T20 tournament. International star Alex Hales (27) will feature for the Bucks this season in what is set to add further excitement to the tournament’s already impressive list of marquee signings. Hales is currently ranked number eight in the ICC player rankings in the world in T20s. In late August, Hales, while playing for England against Pakistan in an ODI in Trent Bridge, ploughed 171 off 122 balls, helping his English teammates reach the current highest score in ODI history. The brutal opening batsman also hit an unbeaten 116 off 64 balls in the World T20 Cup in 2014. At this stage, Hales will be available for one or two matches depending on the availability of Hussey. This now makes three Nottinghamshire signings for the Bucks, which also has domestic cricketers Steven Mullaney and Luke Fletcher playing. Nonetheless, this makes Buckley’s T20 side in this year’s tournament, arguably the strongest club side in cricket history, look more like a Big Bash League side than a DDCA side out of Park Oval. Fitzroy-Doncaster all-rounder Trent Lawford is no longer available for the Bucks, while Jamie Brohier from Frankston Peninsula will turn out once again. In other marquee signings, Dingley has snared Prahan Cricket Club fast-bowler Matt Wilcox as its marquee signing. The seamer has been one of Victorian Premier Cricket’s finest bowlers since making his First XI debut back in the 2012/13 season, and is well remembered for a brilliant 6/28 he took two seasons ago against Melbourne. Berwick will once again welcome Casey-South Melbourne batsman Michael Wallace to the fold. In last season’s competition, Wallace made a terrific 71 not-out to start the tournament, and previously made a 50 the year before for Berwick. Hallam Kalora Park has secured current Victorian Bushranger and Essendon skipper Aaron Ayre to its stocks this tournament. The 24-year old made his Sheffield Shield debut for Victoria last season, while he also featured for the Melbourne Renegades in last year’s BBL. Sandown start circuits grow Sandown will host the opening round of the 2017 CAMS National Racing Championships, which will expand to a nine round calendar next year. The nine rounds will see the addition of two more circuits, with the Nationals returning to Wakefield Park and Morgan Park, giving New South Wales and Queensland a greater slice of the pie. Director of the Nationals Michael Smith is looking forward to another big season of the Nationals. “We are pleased to see the calendar expand to nine rounds in 2017, which will allow for more racing time for the categories competing at the Nationals next season,” Smith said. “To assist with affordability, the nine rounds will be a combination of traditional three-day formats and the introduction of two-day formats for some rounds. “2016 has been a great season of racing so far, and we are always looking at ways we can improve the Nationals to make it one of the best and most affordable ways to compete in national level circuit racing in Australia. “The Nationals will also celebrate its 100th round since its inception in 2006, so there is plenty to look forward to next year.” The season will begin at Sandown in April and will then travel to Phillip Island for the Nationals’ 100th round in May, followed by Winton in June. The Nationals will then head to Sydney Motorsport Park in July, then drive up north to Queensland Raceway after the Supercars round at Ipswich. Competitors will then travel back to Victoria for Winton in August and Phillip Island in September for rounds six and seven. The final two rounds of the Nationals will be held at Morgan Park and finishing in Wakefield Park in November. After only a moderate getaway Outside Pass manoeuvred herself to clear running, heading to the back straight. She took control at the top of the home straight and went on to win by 3/4 in 29.38. Trainer Tony Apap was thrilled post-race. “From where she was it was a great effort once she got in that position down the back she was always going to be hard to beat,” he said. “I was a bit disappointed with her first run back from a spell, but after her second run back I knew she wasn’t far away from her best.” “All she needs is an ounce of luck in her races as she’s so strong.” Before heading to the TAB Melbourne Cup heats with Outside Pass, Apap will be eagerly awaiting the Shootout field announcement on Tuesday night. Love of game kept her straight By Nick Creely Rangers star Sara Blicavs is the kind of player that all teams love to have. These kinds of players, who motivate others, lead by example and bleed for their team, are the heartbeat and the fabric of a thriving sporting club – and define the values and culture that a team lives by. This has seen the star forward reach 150 games in that time with both the Bendigo Spirit and Dandenong Rangers. In the 150th game, at home against a strong Perth Lynx outfit, Blicavs was given a rousing reception by her adoring fans, and proceeded to play a game that befitted her consistency and intensity. Blicavs told the Journal that while it’s just another number, she feels proud of her achievements thus far. “To be honest I thought it was just another number; but then when my brother Chris said to me that 99 per cent of the world hasn’t even played a single WNBL game, I think that’s when I put it into perspective. “It is an achievement and I guess I am pretty chuffed to reach 150 at the age of 23. Looking back at her debut game in the WNBL in 2009 for the AIS, Blicavs said she felt nervous but is thankful for the experience that has helped shape her career. “I remember getting hit, flying out of court and being so exhausted after the first couple of minutes – I couldn’t even breathe but it was a lot of fun and I can never take that back,” Blicavs said. After a stint with the AIS, Blicavs won a WNBL championship with Bendigo Spirit, and said it was a feeling that almost can’t be put into words. “It was seriously the greatest moment of my basketball career so far. “It gives me more motivation and wants to get that feeling back for our team this year,” Blicavs said. But at the end of this championship year, Blicavs decided to return to the Rangers and feels as if she is now truly home. “The group just fits me perfectly. It was a tough decision but I think I made the right one.”
Blicavs said her biggest inspiration and support is her family, who has helped shape her life and outlook in basketball. “As cliche as it sounds, my family has helped me so much along the way, and they’re always there for advice and I think what I like so much about my parents is that they are realists. “Both my brothers, too, always played with me when I was younger and I guess they made me the tough princess I am now,” Blicavs said. Blicavs said her durability comes down to her love for the game but that only two years ago she considered walking away completely. “I went through a rough patch two years ago where I hated basketball. “I think the fact that I came out the other end and ended up sticking with it, and coming out better for it, came down to my love for the game.” Now heading into the next phase of her already glittering basketball career, Blicavs, who has spent some time with the Australian Opals, would love the opportunity to play for Australia at both the Olympic and Commonwealth games. “I’m not trying to think too much ahead to be honest, but the commonwealth games are coming up in 2018 and obviously the Olympics in 2020. “I don’t know what the Australian team is doing, but it’s definitely one of my longer term goals.

New home for Cougars gives players a reason to shoot high for success Keysborough Basketball Association (KBA) has made the big move up the hill to Rowville Secondary College. The Cougars have played their last home game out of Springers Leisure Centre in Keysborough after the association decided to relocate following a tenancy offer from the school. Association president Gary Nichol said the facility had been the Cougars’ back-up in the past and a chance conversation with stadium management triggered the switch to the east. “It’s been very good so far – we’ve got a very warm welcome,” Nichol said. “Alex, the stadium manager here, has been here for a while now and we’ve used this as our back up stadium for BIG V. “He approached me one day and said ‘what about it?’ and I said ‘let’s talk’ and we did.” Nichol said the invitation and high priority access the Cougars will receive at Rowville Secondary College was too good to pass up and will greatly improve the association’s capacity on and off the court. “There are now far more opportunities available for both senior and junior players, coaches and the whole deal,” Nichol said. “Just better opportunities that will allow the association to move forward and flourish ... and it’s simply a far better fit here in a quality basketball environment, in a state-of-the-art facility that have been offered to us. “The stadium here has offered us a high priority and that’s more than we’ve ever had before with seniors and juniors training and playing at the one facility – that’s something we’ve never been able to do. “Really happy to be invited onto what we hope to call home. “That whole playing and training on the one court – you can’t beat it.” The Cougars are ready to get stuck into the new Melb Utd. Records tumble at little athletics By Nick Creely Friday 14 October was a day of records for the Springvale Little Athletics Centre with the shot put records being broken twice. It is just two weeks into the competition season and already the exciting young athletes are upping the ante and improving each week. Earlier in the day, young athlete Damon Harbis threw a highly impressive 9.40m, breaking the previous record by 10cm. Then, out of the blue, Declan McBean threw a brilliant 11.85m, breaking Damon’s record by 2.45m. It is very rare in athletics that two competitors break the same record on the same day in the same event. Just a week prior to this achievement, Declan also broke the discus record at the Athletics Centre in Springvale. With the previous record sitting at 29.76m, Declan decided to break it in a remarkable throw of 43.87m.
This throw, which highlights the elite talent Declan is growing into, is not far off from some of the best Australian junior discus records. With the season still young, president Cassie Jacobs was excited about what was happening and said other athletes have still got plenty of records to break. “Both these two athletes competed at State School Athletics. “We are looking forward to other records being broken by our athletes throughout this season,” Jacobs said. Jacobs also said there was plenty of room left for any children who were interested in taking part. Athletics is for children aged five to 15 years old and registrations are still welcome. Narre Warren North rising star Thomas Randle has enjoyed a comprehensive two-day test driving a Comtec Racing Formula V8 3.5 (formerly Formula Renault 3.5) at Spain’s Circuit de Valencia earlier this week. Randle’s test was in preparation for his debut in the high-speed open wheel championship, which will take place at Spain’s Jerez circuit during the weekend of 28-30 October. During the course of the two-day program, Randle completed more than 100 laps, performed practice starts and completed pit stop simulations, lapping the 4.070k circuit over six seconds faster than he did while driving a FIA European Formula 3 specification car at the same venue late last year. “Driving the car was just phenomenal and the power was incredible, it just keeps on accelerating,” Randle said. “It was very similar to the feeling I got from the Saab Sports Sedan. “My head was getting lifted up from the wind I was going that fast, around 280 kph on the approach to turn one. “The grip on new tyres was unbelievable and I was reaching 215 kph minimum speed through the first corner which felt incredible, and pulling almost three Gs laterally. “It did take some time getting used to how quickly I could apply the throttle and had a few wheel-spin moments here and there. “I felt I acclimatised to the speed of the car fairly quickly. The main thing I worked on was trying to slow everything down in my brain when everything was actually happening so quickly. “The carbon brakes were another area I had to get used to as the first two laps you have virtually no brakes at all until they warm up, but once they have heat in them they’re very aggressive and the braking distances very short. “It was great to be back at Valencia, a track which I already have the knowledge of, and I was running six seconds a lap faster than the times I did in there in F3. My fastest lap in the F3 was 1:25.7 and I did a 1:19.7 in this car, completing

MOTORING Holden’s flexing its final muscle By Ewan Kennedy Sadly, the VF Commodore Series II is likely to be the last ever Holden family car made in Australia, though Holden may surprise us by introducing a further update in the next 12 months. However, the VF II SSV Redline sedan we tested last week has the final major upgrades and any future versions are likely to be minor dress-ups perhaps with special editions. This gave us a great excuse to road test an SSV Redline powered by a Chevrolet LS3 6.2-litre V8. Yep, the big engine… OK, it’s a cliche - but there’s no substitute for cubic inches and we loved every minute we spent in the big Aussie bruiser, not only in the way the engine performs, but also in the sophisticated dynamics that keep all that power under control. Exterior design changes on the VF to make it the VFII are minor and are chiefly functional, being there for improved aerodynamics and the additional cooling requirements of the more powerful engine. Air vents on the bonnet assist the release of hot air from the engine bay, they also give the car a more aggressive look. Large corner fascia ducts have been added to channel air away from the front of the car. Commodore VFII has GM’s MyLink system that works with smartphones through Bluetooth. USB and Aux ports are also installed. There are huge reserves of safety thanks to the well-tuned suspension and excellent brakes and selectable electronic overrides are there should you make small to medium mistakes. This is the quite simply the quickest non-HSV Commodore ever, leaping from rest to 100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds. The clutch and gearbox aren’t exactly userfriendly, but that’s all part of the fun in any US-
