Arrests after raid By Aneeka Simonis FOUR men from Pakenham, Officer and Donvale have been arrested following early morning home raids by antibikie unit, Taskforce Echo. A 27-year-old Officer man and 29-year-old Donvale man were arrested in relation to a non-fatal shooting in Carrum Downs on at about 1.30pm on Saturday 1 October. A 39-year-old Cranbourne man was shot in Robinson Road, Carrum Downs and later found with gunshot wounds to his leg. A 22-year-old Pakenham man and a 19-year-old Pakenham woman were also arrested during the raids. Police apprehended the pair in relation to drug offences, not the shooting. All parties are assisting with police investigations. Police began raiding a home in The Circuit, Pakenham before 8.30am on Wednesday 12 October, and went on to raid unknown addresses in Officer, Hallam, Dandenong South and Donvale. They arrived in unmarked police cars, wearing bulletproof vests and were seen taking away several bags of evidence from within the home in The Circuit, Pakenham. A black Chrysler was also seized. Police dogs were on scene. It was reported Echo taskforce officers used a megaphone to summon the Donvale man from his home earlier in the morning.

Slip-sliding away THE two major slides at the Cardinia Community Adventure Playground have been removed and sealed off after being vandalised. While a single-twirl slide will be installed where the spiral tunnel slide once stood, the double slide will not be replaced as it is no longer deemed compliant with national safety standards. The popular children’s attraction at the PB Ronald Reserve near John Street was built in 1999 in an initiative involving council, businesses and the community. Cardinia Shire Council park services co-ordinator Stephen Mannering said the slides at the fortress playground were due for renewal as part of the council’s playground upgrade schedule in 2019. “The council has embarked on a process of replacing some of the play equipment at the park, taking into account changes to compliance requirements," Mr Mannering said. “The double slide will not be replaced due to national compliance reasons. The gradient of the slide - the angle that is created due to its height - means it cannot be replaced because of the distance between the slide and the as-

phalt path. A replacement slide would be too steep to meet compliance requirements. “A single-twirl slide is on order to replace the enclosed slide and the council will schedule the installation as soon as possible after the delivery of the equipment. “Safety remains a high priority for the council and all play equipment must meet Australian Standards. We appreciate that this sometimes means delays in the replacement of equipment and ask that the community remains patient while playground upgrades are undertaken.“ Pakenham childhood centre director Vicki Ferguson said she took her before-and-after school care group to the playground every school holiday break. “That’s terrible that they’ve removed the slides,” Ms Ferguson said. “The slides are a favourite among the children. It definitely comes as a surprise.” Pakenham mother of three Ashlee Carey said the family had often visited the playground for the kids to play when they lived closer to the park. “From memory there was nothing unsafe about the slide,” she said. “It’s a shame they’ve taken it down.”

‘Watch list’ from cameras By Aneeka Simonis WELL over 200 cars are recorded on a ‘watch list’ at one of the major highway petrol stations in Officer. Both inbound and outbound BP service stations are manned with automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras, and regularly consult with police investigators. One of the stations even takes reports of stolen cars or number plates direct from victims in an attempt to help police in their recovery efforts. BP outbound general manager Andrew Cliff revealed the number of

blacklisted cars almost doubled from August to October this year compared with the same quarter in 2015. Alerts are heard when a car recorded on the watch list enters one of the petrol stations. The alerts relate to cars involved in criminal matters including petrol drive-offs, are reported as stolen or of police interest. They even have alerts for cars linked to incidents of verbal abuse involving staff. Mr Cliff said police requested footage of suspect vehicles “all the time”.

“Last week we had lots of requests,” he said. A worker at the outbound BP Service Station on the Princes Freeway took to social media to encourage victims of car or number plate theft to report it to them, citing increases in rates of car theft locally. All of the highway stations have a linked database, alerting them to incidents that may have occurred in other parts of the state. PAKENHAM children had the rare chance to get up close and personal with the world’s five deadliest snakes at a show in Cardinia Lakes shopping centre last week. Raymond Hoser, known as the ‘Snake Man’, said the most common snakes in Cardinia shire were the copperhead and that tiger snakes - among the world’s deadliest - were also prevalent. Mr Hoser, who lives with about 100 snakes, 12 frogs and 30 fresh-

water crocodiles, brought some of his most prized reptiles to Pakenham on Thursday 29 September. Among them were the world’s top five most venomous snakes - the fierce, taipan, brown, tiger and death adder snakes. “I’ve been into reptiles since I was dropped as a baby and I’ve been catching snakes since I was four years old,” Mr Hoser said. “At this time of year, you have one summery day and all the snakes come out to sun bake.

“Every sunny day we’ve had, the phones go crazy and we’re called to catch snakes. Grand Final Day last year was one of the worst - we caught 32 snakes in the one day. “It’s important that if you see a snake to ignore it. Nine times out of 10 it will run away. If it doesn’t, then call a snake catcher.” Mr Hoser said snake hotspots that residents should be wary of include near golf courses, railway lines, creeks and scrub. Commended for her work By Victoria Stone-Meadows A POLICE officer from Narre Warren has been awarded a divisional commendation for her exceptional work on a family violence case. On 13 June Senior Constable Jacinta (Jay) Allen, 31, attended an address in Narre Warren for a routine welfare check on a young woman and her infant child. Upon knocking on the door and receiving no response, Sen Const Allen checked the number plates of the car in the driveway and discovered it belonged to the women’s ex-partner, who had a history of abusive behaviour. “The car belonged to her expartner who she had a standing intervention order against,” Sen Const Allen said. “We did some searching, rang family members, but no one had seen her for a few days and that started to ring alarm bells.” When her and another officer were on their way back to the station to report the young woman as a missing person, they received a call from their sergeant. The young woman’s mother had called the police station and said her daughter was at the house the two officers had just checked.

“The ex-boyfriend had been there with her when we knocked on the door but had not allowed her to answer,” Ms Allen said. “We got a few more members to go back to the house and we were going to force our way in because she may have been in serious danger.” This time the young woman did answer the door to the police but refused to co-operate and give a statement It was then that Sen Const Allen showed an amazing amount of compassion for the young woman and sat with her for many hours to reassure her the police were trying to help but couldn’t without her assistance. “She had a young baby and I had to make her see it was bigger than just her,” Sen Const Allen said. “She eventually agreed to make a statement.” Sen Const Allen ended up with a statement from the young woman that was 13 pages long and detailed two years of violent history. “There was stuff she hadn’t told police before and some of it was pretty nasty,” she said. After giving her statement, the young woman was at Narre Warren Police Station when she started receiving text messages from her ex-partner. It was then that Sen Const

Allen arranged with the sergeant for two officers to go and arrest him. The man was charged with more than 50 offences relating to the years of abuse he inflicted on his former partner and on 6 September was sentenced to 12 months in prison. Sen Cont Allen was on duty with this case from 3pm on Monday 13 June until 7am on Tuesday 14 June. “It was a really good outcome and I hope it’s enough time for the young girl to rebuild with her baby and not have to be controlled by someone else,” she said. Since then, Sen Const Allen has caught up with the young woman and her mother to make sure she’s alright. “I have met with her and met the baby and mum. They are such a lovely family.” Though all of the incident and on receiving the award, Jay Allen has maintained her sense of humility and adherence to duty. “I get paid to do it, I don’t think it was a big deal,” she said “I just did my job, other people look at it differently like I went above and beyond but that’s what I’m there for, to help people when they can’t help themselves.”

Events like Mental Health Week and R U OK Day bring the issues around Mental Health to the fore, but Rev Hollis says there is a right and wrong way to approach talking about it. “Giving advice is the wrong thing to do,” she said. “It’s good to avoid giving advice and instead ask open ended questions, ask them what it is like, what can you do to help, do you want to talk about it?”

THIS Mental Health Week, the Hampton Park Uniting Church honoured those who are often forgotten in the discussion around mental health issues. On Tuesday 11 October, the Uniting Church held a lunch to honour those who care for friends and family members who suffer from a mental illness. The lunch was attended by carers who meet regularly at the church and use the space to share their experiences in a safe and judgment-free environment with the help of lifeAssist. Moderator of the Uniting Church Synod of Victoria and Tasmania, Reverend Sharon Hollis, spoke at the lunch about her own experiences caring for her late husband who suffered severe depression. “My partner has chronic depression that he tragically died of,” she said. “I had been a carer for him and continue to care for my daughters who have bad times occasionally. “It is a tough space but rewarding space and important for a community of carers when caring for people with a mental illness to have a space like this.” “Mental illness has a hidden nature and people can look very well when they meet other people, but if you live with this every day, you know they are struggling and carers struggle too.” Rev Hollis spoke on the importance of carers to have a support network around them and about sustaining and strengthening these spaces for the mental health of carers themselves. Members of the carers group told of how important the group has been for them in helping them care for their loved ones while looking out for them-

I AM writing on behalf of the Akoonah Park Men’s Shed to thank federal MP Jason Wood, state MPs Judith Graley and Brad Battin, and all City of Casey councillors and staff without whose help and support the Akoonah Park Men’s Shed would not have achieved the success it currently enjoys. Our latest project of a new recreational facility has only been made possible by the advice and financial aid we have received towards this project. When completed this will provide an area for social activities, a place to sit, relax and enjoy a cuppa amongst other members and guests. The membership has grown from 25 in June 2012 to 165 in September with approximately four new members joining each month. We have enjoyed very good support from the Akoonah Park Committee of Management along with local businesses and greatly appreciate all the help that they have provided since the start of the Men’s Shed at Akoonah Park. AS A resident of Edrington Ward I have made contact with all candidates in my ward regarding the current and proposed developments in the Berwick village area, in particular on the south side of Brisbane Street between Edwardes Street and Rutland Road where almost 70 per cent of properties were sold by the same real estate agent this year. If greedy developers have their way four single storey homes will be replaced by no less than 23 double storey dwellings in that short distance. And there is more to come! Residents are understandably concerned at how such development would erode the beautiful character and amenity of the area, with unsightly high buildings overlooking neighbours’ properties, loss of trees, bushes and gardens, and increased traffic flows. Anyone who is not convinced need only take a closer look at the current appalling development at 38-40 Brisbane Street, a prime example of my concerns for the future. I would encourage anyone who shares my concerns about inappropriate development in the City of Casey to contact their ward council candidates and gauge their attitude. We elect candidates to work on our behalf for the good of our neighbourhoods and our city. It is time well spent to make contact with these prospective councillors to find out what they feel about issues that are important to you and let them know you will be monitoring their performance in the council if they are elected. We need a council that represents the people of Casey and not self-interest or greedy developers. Margaret Edwards, Berwick.

SO, COUNCIL elections have come round again and we all have the chance to elect the best available people prepared to represent us for the next four years. I notice that all 11 of the current group of councillors have offered themselves for reelection but have they really earned the reward of a further term in office? I suggest that, before completing and returning the postal voting document, each of us should reflect on the performance of the councillors representing our individual wards and ask ourselves whether these individuals truly represent the ratepayers and residents of Casey or are they either politically ambitious or is their prime objective simply to have the kudos of being addressed as ‘councillor’? Also, many of the candidates (over 80 for 11 positions) are really running mates to assist the current incumbent to get re-elected. Some of these can easily be identified by reading their voting preferences which are listed in the candidate statements on the City of Casey web site. Also, as a start, I suggest that all voters should study the Ombudsman’s Report, released in November 2015, on an investigation into the allegations of improper conduct of some Casey councillors. While the findings stated that misconduct could not be substantiated, it is noted that at

One has to ask why this was so. As a regular reader of council and planning committee agendas and minutes, it is noticeable that many motions put before council are passed without discussion, even if legitimate objections exist, leaving objectors with the expense and trauma of appealing to VCAT - which many ordinary people are reluctant to do. Also, on numerous occasions, council officers suggest that there is little point in objecting to certain proposals, particularly planning permit requests on the grounds that appeals to VCAT are likely to be successful. While this may be justified in some instances in other cases it may be just an excuse not to fully investigate the proposal. Even when cases are heard by VCAT, a weak case put forward by council representatives can result in VCAT overturning a council refusal to grant a permit. If councillors have a record of frequently accepting officers’ opinions without public discussion it is at least questionable whether they are truly representing the interests of ratepayers and residents. The decision on selecting who to vote for as number one on your ballot paper is yours alone, but identifying the ‘running mates’ and placing them towards the bottom of your selection will be a good start towards eliminating those who are not willing to safeguard the genuine interests of the electors. Don't be taken for a dummy SURELY one of the most important political instruments impacting on this outcome this local government election is the Victorian Electoral Act because it sets the standards and conditions that all candidates are required to meet. But, once again, its shortcomings are being totally ignored by all. The Victorian Electoral Act, however, still allows candidates to stand in a ward in which they do not live. While Casey Mayor Sam Aziz has criticised candidate Rex Flannery for endorsing Paul Richardson, who lives outside of the ward he is contesting, Sam Aziz has had nothing to say about Rise Up Australia Party councillor Rosalie Crestani who doesn’t live in Four Oaks Ward and has her election pamphlets authorized by a local Narre Warren resident. Why should a candidate not living in his/ her ward be allowed to stand for council? Doesn’t this defeat the purpose of having the electorate divided into wards? The VEA allows “dummy candidates” to stand at election time. Dummy candidates are not illegal, only unethical. The Victorian Electoral Commission and the minister don’t really care about what may be considered unethical conduct. Dummy candidates are about deceiving voters so they represent nothing less than an assault on democracy. Although all election statements have

been prefaced with a VEC disclaimer on the ballot paper, candidates can still write unsubstantiated and bigoted comments in election pamphlets about Islam and sharia law. John Glazebrook, Endeavour Hills.

Democracy could use a tweak or two HAVING taken a close interest in politics since I was taught “civics“ at school, I believe that democracy works as well in Australia as anywhere in the world. But the way elections are conducted in Casey and other local government areas is something of a travesty. Of course it is one of our basic rights to be free to stand for election, but the long list of almost anonymous candidates in every ward is a joke. From our experience at the last council election, it is near impossible to contact most of them - so how can a conscientious voter judge their ability and experience, or what they hope to contribute to council? And what would they suggest we do with our preferences, should we vote for them? I am a strong believer in preferential voting - which ensures that you must be supported by a majority of the voters to be elected, but I want to be able to make an informed and considered choice. We have been happy with the service we have had from our councillors in Balla Balla Ward - Colin Butler and currently Geoff Ablett, but how could we consider anyone else if we have no opportunity to meet or even read about any other candidate? Then there is no option but postal voting which is easily open to corruption. How does the returning officer know who filled in the ballot? Do council officers have a sample of every resident’s signature to check the voting envelopes? And if you walk around your local streets you could easily collect multiple copies of the voting papers. It would not be hard (or very expensive) to have a set of “attendance“ polling booths open for say a week - like the pre-poll centres that are run in state and federal elections. And postal voting only on request for people who really need it. There is a real need for reform to ensure that democracy is clearly seen to operate fairly at a local government level. Girl attacked with hammer A SCHOOLGIRL has described her devastation after being struck three times with a hammer, punched and strangled in a sustained attack by her exboyfriend at his Hampton Park family home. The accused, 18, who the News has chosen not to name, pleaded guilty in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court to intentionally and recklessly causing injury as well as false imprisonment on 2 and 3 October. He sat with a bowed head in the dock as the 17-year-old victim - flanked by tearful family and friends - read aloud her victim impact statement at the 10 October hearing. The Year 11 student said the first 11 months of their relationship was “loving” but now she was terrified. “He was my first real boyfriend. “Now I can’t believe that this has happened to me.” She’d lost count of the beatings. Her body had been punched all over and she’d suffered black eyes and blood noses, she said. In November, people started noticing her excessively bruised arms while she was at the beach. She told them she played rugby. In the statement she added that when she told the accused

she was pregnant, he allegedly accused her of sleeping around, called her a slut and kicked and punched her stomach. “I made a decision to have a termination because I was terrified of the injuries to the unborn baby.” Those allegations, however, were not the subject of police charges. In another assault, he knocked out her front tooth. She is still struggling to pay for her repaired tooth and the termination, she told the court. The accused had “taken everything from me”, had made her feel “worthless”, unable to sleep and “afraid to love again”. Police prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Kerryn Steyn told the court that on 2 October, the ex-partners had met at a park near the accused's home. He told the girl that she had two choices - to come with him or he’d chase her down and harm her. She went with him inside his family home where she was punched. His mother allegedly told the accused: “I don’t want to hear her crying. You have to stop or I’ll take her home.” The victim indicated she wanted to go home and was led by the accused into a backyard shed where he struck her three times to the head with a hammer.

He told her if she called police “I’ll kill myself or you”. Angered by a video found on her phone, he choked her twice until she was unconscious. He later told police that he had got so angry that he had blacked out himself. He had choked her to scare her and stop her yelling, he allegedly told police. As he held a sharp tool near her eye, he told her again that he would kill her. The ordeal ended when his mother rang the victim’s family. The accused's defence lawyer said his client was not violent with his relatives at home, had no criminal history but had been recently sent away by his mother to a Brisbane relative to solve his anger problems. “His issue is anger. He’s blacked out during this incident. He gets so angry he blacks out.” Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said the accused was most likely facing imprisonment in a youth detention centre followed by parole or a youth justice order. He was put on a full, indefinite intervention order to protect the victim. He was remanded in custody for sentencing at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 21 November.

BLEARY eyes turned to smiles as a young multi-volunteer received a surprise early-morning reward in front of his Berwick home on 12 October. During a live cross on the Seven Network’s Sunrise breakfast program, Craig Durdin, 22, received a $7000 cheque from weather presenter Sam Mac as part of its regular ‘Suburban Superstar’ award. He was flanked by six colleagues and a fire truck from

Berwick CFA - a brigade that he regards as “family”. Waving for the camera were his excited family and neighbours - with a rolling Labrador that could have stolen the show with a range of supple poses. Mr Durdin certainly didn’t seek the attention nor the accolades. He had been nominated by his mum Sonya for his many good deeds including as a volunteer for five years at Berwick CFA, an ESTA triple zero operator and baseball umpire.

His father Matt said the family, like Craig, all prided themselves on helping out at community sports clubs. In little over a year, Craig had proudly ‘delivered’ three babies as an ESTA operator. He gets called out to about 250 CFA jobs a year, and recently joined the brigade’s management team. In a matter of seconds, Craig had sorted out how to spend his novelty cheque - all going towards his house being built in Clyde North.

Berryman’s behind bars By Cam Lucadou-Wells AN ICE addict on a corrections order has been jailed after a spree of offences including stealing a $4500 motorbike from a co-offender’s Berwick family home garage. Aaron Paul Berryman, 32, had claimed to police he thought he and the two cooffenders had permission to take the Honda motorcycle at 6.30am on 24 August, a court was told. Two security doors at the home were forced open to gain entry, the court heard on 10 October. The accused told the court “the drugs took me over” as he pleaded guilty to the string of offences in July and August. The offences included the theft of three vehicles, a police pursuit, shop-stealing a $12 pack of ice creams, stealing

Jerry cans from two separate premises, driving unlicenced, and possession of ice. On 31 July, Berryman - subject to outstanding warrants - had requested to stay at a relative’s home on the proviso he would turn himself into police. The next day when awoken by the relative, Berryman told her: “If you call the cops, I’ll burn your car to the ground.” Next morning, the relative told Berryman to leave. He flung the victim’s phone into the wall and punched a hole in the house, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court was told. A defence lawyer said Berryman had been using almost a gram of ice a day over the past two years. His drug use and depression had escalated as a result of a relationship break-up, the lawyer said.

The accused had been unable to get out of bed some days to attend appointments as part of his CCO. Since drying out from ice in custody, Berryman was in a “much better frame of mind to talk about things rationally,” the lawyer said. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen pondered the utility of putting Berryman on a treatment-based CCO, given his “appalling” compliance to past orders, including multiple offending. “It’s when you get out (of custody) that’s the real question - will you comply?” Berryman was jailed for 90 days and put on a drug and mental health treatment-based corrections order for 12 months, with judicial monitoring. His driver's licence was disqualified for 12 months.

Years in jail for kidnapper By Cam Lucadou-Wells

Much-needed boost for hospital CASEY Hospital will grow by 160 beds and four operating theatres under a boosted expansion announced by the State Government on 9 October. The government says it will inject an extra $28.6 million into the project - which will now cost $135 million - due to soaring demand for acute health care in Melbourne’s south-east. Without the extra boost, it was expected demand would outstrip supply within two years of the project’s completion. Construction is expected to start next year on the extension, which includes an intensive care unit and a day surgery unit. It is expected to open for patients in late 2019. New education and training facilities for medical, nursing and allied health students will also be built under a partnership

between Monash Health and Monash University. As one of Australia’s fastest growing areas, Casey is home to a record 86 babies born each week and an average 7300 extra residents a year. At the hospital on 9 October, Health Minister Jill Hennessy said investment was needed to meet demand in the future. Premier Daniel Andrews said a “bigger, better” Casey Hospital would mean more families in the south-east can get treatment close to home. Narre Warren South MP Judith Couacaud Graley will lead a community advisory group to help “shape” the project. “Our community is a growing one and as we expand Casey Hospital to meet the needs of local families, we want them all to have a say and work with us every step of the way.”

A MAN has been jailed for up to eight-and-a-half years over a “terrifying” armed home invasion in Narre Warren South, as well as two kidnappings and a car-jacking in March and April this year. Henry Toatoalei, 29, of Noble Park, pleaded guilty to 15 charges at the County Court of Victoria on 7 October including charges of possessing a sawn-off shotgun and a sawn-off rifle as a prohibited person. Toatoalei made full admissions, including kidnapping a man under the pretence of supplying him methamphetamine in Fountain Gate shopping centre car park about 5am on 18 March. Once lured into the back seat of a Mercedes Benz four-wheel drive, the victim was put in a choke-hold by Toatoalei while another passenger punched the victim to the head and face. As he was driven from the car park, the victim was unable to breathe and lost consciousness due to the choke-hold. The victim was stripped of his shoes and shorts, and robbed of $1400 cash, mobile phone, cigarettes and 0.5 grams of ice - as well as the keys of the victim’s father’s Statesman parked at Fountain Gate. Toatoalei admitted to then stealing the Statesman, which was dumped with a damaged front end in Broadmeadows three days later.

About 5.30am on 2 April, Toatoalei pulled a shotgun on a man parked in a hotel car park in Cranbourne and forced the victim to climb into their own vehicle’s boot as part of a debt-collection operation. The accused held the weapon to the man’s face and told him he’d shoot the victim in the leg if he didn’t comply. Toatoalei drove the victim’s Calais, with the victim in the boot, and co-offenders following in another car. During the journey, the victim has managed to escape the boot into the front seat, and pleaded for Toatoalei to desist. Toatoalei punched and then slammed the shotgun’s butt into the victim’s face several times. The victim was told he was only not dead because he had a baby due soon. The accused attempted to blackmail the victim to sign over his car, but the victim was able to pop the boot during the journey and escape. At 8am, Toatoalei - while armed with a shotgun - and an unidentified male broke into the victim’s home in Narre Warren South. The intruders forced three occupants out of their bedrooms, ordered them to lay on their stomachs in the lounge room and demanded the whereabouts of the victim. Toatoalei held a shotgun to the head of the victim’s brother and told him that the victim would be “dead”.

The house was then looted of wallets, phones, a TV, X-Box and video games. The accused - who was said to profit by several thousands of dollars from the debt collection - later told police that the victim “knows why he f***ed up”. On 7 April, a man and woman were forced out of a car at gunpoint by Toatoalei as well as other armed offenders in Springvale South. The accused admitted to police he had lured the victim with the promise of drugs then stole the car and gave it to a friend. During a Special Operations Group police raid of his home, a sawn-off rifle and sawn-off shotgun, a small amount of the drug ice and identity cards of the home invasion victims were found. Judge Gavan Marshall said the “violent and protracted” offending was “self-evidently serious”; the home invasion “could have only been terrifying for your victims”. Judge Marshall said Toatoalei was Samoan-born and subject to a dysfunctional background, including having a father in jail and being estranged from his mother since he was six years old. There was still a chance of rehabilitation for the accused provided he overcame his long-standing alcohol and ice abuse, the judge said. “It is a choice that you’re still capable of embracing.” Toatoalei’s non-parole period was set at five years.

Cup gone with the wind By Russell Bennett THE Cranbourne Cup won’t be rescheduled this spring after the gusty winds that tore through the state on Sunday ripped the hearts out of organisers who were forced to cancel the $300,000 race. Sunday’s 10-race meeting was postponed after just the first race on the card, with the strong winds - which were only predicted to get worse deemed to have posed a health and safety risk. Not only was Cranbourne’s showpiece race postponed, but so too was the $100,000 Apache Cat Classic. After consulting with the Cranbourne Turf Club, Racing Victoria determined that there was no suitable date remaining this Spring Racing Carnival to hold Casey’s signature race. There’s now a distinct possibility that the race could be moved to Friday night, 21 April next year - the date of the turf club’s official 150th anniversary. The race would then return to its traditional spring timeslot in the 2017'18 racing calendar. “We’ll consider the possibility of running the Cranbourne Cup, as well as the Apache Cat Classic, in the autumn next year and ensure either way that some of the prizemoney from (the) meeting is used to bolster the club’s 150th anniversary race meeting on 21 April,” said Racing Victoria operations manager Paul Bloodworth. Cranbourne Turf Club chief executive Neil Bainbridge described the situation on Sunday as “devastating”, but added that if the Cup was moved to autumn, the club would try and hold it under lights “as a good point of difference”. “A lot of work goes into these days - it’s probably nine months of the year

It’s really frustrating.” Mr Bainbridge said the jockeys raised some initial concerns about the

strong winds on Sunday, which led to the stewards ultimately deciding that the meeting needed to be postponed. “I think there’d be a lot of disappointed people, as we are,” he said. “But, like us, people are realists and realise that those winds are pretty strong, and I think everyone understands that the decision was made and the reasons why it was made.

“I think, generally, people understand that safety has to come first. They understand the predicament the club is in and we thank them for their support and we’ll do our utmost to put on another Cranbourne Cup and another great day for our patrons.” Mr Bainbridge said he’d never been involved in a race meeting that had to be called off due to strong winds.

Fashionistas defy weather By Victoria Stone-Meadows DESPITE the Cranbourne Cup race being cancelled due to extreme weather, the ladies of the Fashion on the Field event braved the wind and rain to put on an amazing show. Frocks and hats were blown to and fro but the women persevered and the show went on with two winners being crowned best on field for the day. Young Lady of the Day was awarded to Melanie Hudson, 31, from Geelong for her elegant white and pastel peach ensemble. Ms Hudson said competing in the Cranbourne Cup Fashions on the Field was a last minute decision and she didn’t expect to win. “I decided to go up as a last

minute thing because I had a baby free day,” she said. “I didn’t think I had a chance; everybody competing had a great chance and I’m sure it was very hard for judges to make a decision.” “I was ecstatic, over the moon, and a bit in shock when I did win,” she said. Ms Hudson was wearing a skirt by Chi Chi London, her top was Asilio, and hat (partly her own design) by Terri Oswald Millinery. The winner of the Lady of the Day category of the event was given to Emma Scodellaro from Greenvale for her classic Alexander McQueen dress and Jill and Jack millinery hat.

Ms Scodellaro said she also attended the cup on a whim and was surprised to win the best dressed in her category. “I have had the dress for a few years and wore it at Oaks Day in 2013 and placed in the top 10 at Flemington,” she said. “I just had it sitting there and I love it so much, I only decided to go to Cranbourne the night before and thought ‘let’s pull it out’.” Ms Scodellaro said the dress means more to her than just a dress and it makes her feel incredibly special when she wears it. “It is very special to me; my dad bought it for me before he passed away and it’s not about Young lady of the day finalists, from left, third Rachel Deiulio of Lilydale, winner how I look but about how I feel Melanie Hudson of Geelong and second Milly Smith of Mornington. 160335 wearing it,” she said. Officer currently has an estimated 32,390 households and is projected to grow to a population of 175,562. KR Peters director Peter Nicholls likens Officer to “virgin land” about to take off. St Patrick’s 150th celebrations CATHOLIC education first began in the Pakenham area in the 1850s. The school was a wattle and daub construction on the edge of Toomuc Creek in an area known as Mount Pleasant. The teacher was Daniel Ahern (after whom Ahern Road is named). In 1864 a grant of land was made by the Lands Department for a school at the present St Patrick’s site. The school commenced in 1866 with a Mr Healy as the teacher. Those associated with this development were famous local names such as Bourke, Dore, Kelly and Mulcahy. The school continued to be staffed by lay teachers until the arrival of the Presentation Sisters in 1935. Among those lay teachers, Elizabeth Hunt stands out especially, teaching there from 1905 until 1935. Sunday 23 October, commencing with the 10.30am Mass, will be a celebration of this special anniversary - their sesquicentenary. The day will feature tours of current facilities, simple barbecue lunch and games for the children, as well as an opportunity to purchase Patrick Ferry’s book on the history of St Patrick’s. The awards highlight the contributions local businesses make to the Victorian economy through their export trade. Lynbrook-based pipe welding and fusion equipment producer, Worldpoly, took home the Victorian Export Award for Innovation Excellence. The family-run business have been in operation for over 50 years and supply equipment all over the world for mining, irrigation, water supply and distribution, sewer and drainage, gas mains, and more. Clyde farming legends Schreurs and Sons were awarded the Agribusiness Award for overall excellence across horticultural and agricultural business. Farm owner and operator Chris Schreurs said the award is a great honour and he is proud of the hard work his cousins and other employees had put into the farm over the years. “It’s very much a high honour and it means a lot,” he said. “It reflects on a lot of hard

already taken us on board.” Export trade is big business; adding $39.4 billion in goods and services to the Victorian economy in 2014/’15. Minister for Small Business, Innovation and Trade, Philip Dalidakis, said the awards show the high calibre of export trade produced in Victoria. “We’re leading the country in small business growth and exports, and these awards give us the opportunity to provide our local businesses with the recognition they deserve for taking the very best of Victoria to the world.”

A NEW bus service could cut unemployment and boost business in Dandenong South. Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams announced the route 890 would run between Lynbrook Railway Station and Dandenong Railway Station and take in Abbotts Road in Dandenong South. She said it would start on Sunday 13 November and “help get people to where the jobs are and also helps businesses to secure the skilled workforce they need”. “Lack of public transport connections can be a major obstacle to employment,” Ms Williams said. “This is all about jobs and creating opportunities.” Every day MatchWorks business development manager Maria Ferreira-Correia works with job-seekers who don’t have cars. “Seventy to 80 per cent of our candidates don’t have transport,“ she said. “When you become unemployed, that’s one of the first things to go as they’re quite expensive to run.” Ms Ferreira-Correia said the new bus route would help employers to “benefit from some really good candidates”. “What’s stopping them from getting a job is they don’t have a car,” she said. “There are jobs out there.

in opening up the Dandenong South employment corridor more, particularly to young people without a licence and secondary school students seeking work placement opportunities as part of their studies,” he said. The new service forms part of the State Government’s Better Bus Networks program, which includes four new routes and 13 realignments to Cranbourne’s bus network. Timetables for the new network will be available on ptv. vic.gov.au from Monday 17 October.

Yoa is onside after assault

By Cam Lucadou-Wells NELLY Yoa’s inspirational tale is about to hit small and big screens worldwide. The Dandenong man is the subject of the short film Offside. It is based on the story of how he narrowly survived, learned how to walk again and resumed his promising soccer career after an horrific machete attack at a Sudanese beauty pageant in 2011. The 15-minute film directed by Prashanth Raj re-enacts the events when his “dream” was nearly taken away. Its most powerful moment is an epilogue to camera by Mr Yoa urging people to build selfbelief. He said that the film shows people can come back whatever their adversity. “Hopefully this will motivate them to pursue their dream.” It is screening on You Tube, at Federation Square on 7 October and at Harmony Square, Dandenong, at a date which is yet to be fixed. Crowning his recovery, Mr Yoa has made this season’s reserve and youth squad of ALeague club Melbourne City. He trains with the likes of Socceroo legend Tim Cahill. But the club has also recognised Mr Yoa’s ambassadorial qualities, employing him as a community officer running soccer clinics and connecting with young people. On his own voalition, he has taken on a mentoring role with members of the notorious Apex Gang. As he has told Star News in the past, his approach is to urge disaffected youth to keep busy, stick at school, get a job and get involved in life. “Do something in the community. Not just

Connections won just a shade under $10,000 for one of the main races on Saturday’s Bruce Clough Mazda Guineas Day calendar. Riley’s Rocket - trained by Paul Kramer and ridden by Jarrod Fry stormed home to win by over three lengths to the Lenny Xuereb-trained Inkulu, and Shane Bottomley’s Ikura another two lengths further back. THE Pakenham Cricket Club has a long and proud history, and on Saturday the Lions celebrated five of their eight first XI premierships. The club has long been one of the biggest in the local area, but Saturday’s celebration showed just how hard first grade titles are to win. By their own reckoning, only eight of the Lions’ 35

premierships are first XI titles. Pakenham welcomed back its past premiership players from its back-to-back A Gradewinning sides of 1983/84 and 1984/85, and its back-to-backto-back sides of 1998/99, 1999/00, and 2000/01 for a reunion to remember. Interestingly, despite being a consistently strong club, the Lions’ 1980/81 and 2015/16 A Grade premierships both broke 15-year droughts.

Lions take opener By Russell Bennett and Nick Creely WEST GIPPSLAND CRICKET ASSOCIATION PAKENHAM has hit the ground running in the opening round of the Premier division - losing just two wickets en route to a 196-run total and then restricting Merinda Park to just 129 in reply. A solid opening partnership of 59 runs between Chris Smith and Tom Tyrrell set the tone for the innings; as Smith went on to reach 67, while young gun Zac Chaplin (62 not out) recorded his best Premier grade score to date. But the Lions had to work hard for their victory as the Cobras got off to a solid start, but were unable to maintain the rage as Jason Williams (2/29), Tom Tyrrell (2/29) and youngster Dan Vela (2/12) steadied the Lions and ensured they came away with a comfortable victory. Pakenham Upper/Toomuc marked their return to the Premier division with a memorable win over Emerald at Heatherbrae Reserve. The Bombers won the toss and elected to bat, and got off a strong 59-run stand, laying the foundation for a solid total. AJ Walker (88 not out) was a class above for the Bombers, with the Yabbies unable to contain the star. Set 183 for victory in what was always going to be a testing total, the Yabbies were well served by coach Brad Senior, who devastated the Bombers, launching a series of big blows before falling for 65. But it was Senior’s 112-run stand with Ryan De Reus (53 not out) that laid the foundation for the Yabbies to start the season off on a winning note. Golfers lock in annual meeting date PAKENHAM GOLF THE board of management of the Pakenham and District Golf Club would like to inform all of its members that the 2016 Annual General Meeting will be held on Thursday, 27 October at 7pm in the clubhouse. The AGM will include elections for the board positions that are up for re-election, if any member would like to nominate for the board, forms can be picked up from the club office. Richard Murphy (5) shot 34 points to take the win, holding off Barry Williams (20)

on 33 points. Paddy Duane got his round off to a great start, shooting 18 points on the front nine to win the super comp. Balls went down to 29. TWILIGHT The Twilight golf season got underway last Wednesday, as a small but dedicated field contended the first event with Steve Northcott winning his way into the final twilight straight off the bat with 14 points, good enough to take the win. With the weather improving every day, twilight golf will grow each week, this year is offering up some great prizes throughout the year as well as for the final event due to be played in March 2017. SATURDAY Last Saturday the Stableford event was held in the best conditions for a

The sun was shining and very little wind to speak of made for a very pleasant day, even with the perfect conditions the course is still playing tough, as reflected by the scores, normally by October there are already many scores into the 40s, however this year, just playing to your handicap is a great effort. John Hoare (14) shot 36 points to win A Grade, and was the only player all day to even equal their handicap, with Nick McQualter (4) coming in second with 34 points. B Grade was won by Robert Yates (18) with 34 points holding off Terry Tisdale (20) with 32 points. Balls went down to 29. SUNDAY Sunday's winner was Simon Fay (21) 30 points.

Great win for Cardinia Waters bowlers CARDINIA WATERS BOWLS THE Cardinia Waters Bowls Club Division 4 Saturday side had a resounding win in their season opening game at home to Hampton Park. The overall score was 106 to 61 with all four rinks up. New skipper Phil Wynd had a good first game for the club, with Graeme Windley leading, Tom Gogan second and David Smith playing third, he scored a five on the first end and led all day to win 26 to 12. Skipper David Blake with Mick Knight, Gunter Baumbach and Bill Hite also had a good day but battled

early after losing five on the first end. They were down 12 to 14 at the break but won seven out of the final nine ends to win 30 to 16. Jim Smith skipped for first year pennant player Ron Wakefield, Dennis Patmore and Lindsay Cameron. They started well to lead 13 to one after seven ends and held on to win 24 to 15. John Van Vugt had Bill Tippelt leading, Del Dance second and Simon Koning playing third. They played well early to lead 23 to seven after 14 ends but lost six of

the final seven to hang on to a 26 to 18 victory. This Saturday they visit Berwick. The Division 8 side took the Village bus to Keysborough where they played Dandenong RSL Rec. It was not a good day and they came home losing 30 to 48. Skipper John Carr with Ian Smith leading and Brad Potter second got away to a good start but lost the lead on the 11th end and lost a close one, 16 to 21. Tom Davie skipped for Jim McCallum and Peter Mitchell, they also led early but lost 11 shots on ends

five, six and seven to finally lose 14 to 27. This Saturday they are home to Beaumaris. The only winner on Tuesday’s midweek games was the rain. The Division 1 side went to Dandy Club and the Division 2 hosted Malvern. Both games were called off after only a few ends and the points were shared equally. The next round sees Division 1 host Keysborough and Division 2 travel to Camberwell Central.

Lions bowlers kick-start season PAKENHAM BOWLS SATURDAY PAKENHAM Bowls Club could not have asked for a better start to the 2016/'17 season - the weather on Saturday was magnificent and all three sides who competed recorded good wins (the Fours had a bye). Pakenham One (Div 1) were away at Hampton Park where despite prevailing on only two rinks out of four, they had a convincing 80 shots to 62 win and picked up 14 pennant points. The ever reliable and popular Dave Wood was given a run as skip on Saturday and that experiment well and truly paid off as his was the best winning rink with a great 33 to 13 scorecard. Dave was well supported by new member Steve Bentley (3), Ian Anderson (2) and Graeme Wilde (L). The Ones will be at home to another Round 1 winner in Heathmont, next Saturday. Despite the misgivings of a few members, it has been the practice for the past couple of seasons for Pakenham Two (Div 2) to play their home games on the quick bottom green and it was on that track that they recorded an across the board, 94 shots to 54 win against Narre Warren on Saturday. Best rink with a score of 25 to 11 was Keith Lewis (S), new member Ned Courtin (3), Paul Currie (2) and another new member Brian Norton (L). The Twos picked up 18 pennant points easing them into top spot on the ladder. They will be away against the strong Burden Park next round. Pakenham Three (Div 5) were also at home where, as a result of huge wins on both successful rinks and close games on the two which went down, they defeated the Dandenong Club by 45 shots overall (103 to 58) leaving some members of their opposition looking shell-shocked by the end of the game. Best winning rink with a massive score of 39 shots to 10 were Joyce Andrus (S), Trent (Rowdy) Bedford (3), Ray Illing (2) and Graham Andrus (L). John Coote’s rink with 26 shots up and winning 16 of the 21 ends was close behind. Round 3 will see the Threes away at Mulgrave Country Club. It was pleasing to see that despite the bye, many Pakenham Four players turned up for an intra-club hit out. They will be at home to Keysborough for Round 2. Winner of the first Hi-Lo for the year with number three was Brian Caddell. MIDWEEK In a word, the weather on Tuesday was horrible, and all games in the sections in which Pakenham One and Pakenham Three compete were washed out. Somehow however, the Twos managed to complete their game at North Balwyn, ironically for a draw. At the time of writing, Bowls Victoria had not posted all results for that section so it was unclear whether that game would stand or whether it would also be declared a washout. Round 3 will see the Ones at home to Hampton Park, the Twos away at MCC Kew Sports and the Threes away at Vermont South. REGIONAL RESULTS After dominating regional events over the last few years, Pakenham players have started this season in a similar vein. The final of the Casey Region Men’s Over 60 Singles Championship was an all-Pakenham event with President of the Bowls Section, Terry McRedmond pitted against Graeme Wilde at Pakenham. After an epic battle it was a very happy McRedmond who claimed the trophy - another great achievement by both members. Meanwhile, down at Narre Warren, Jim Williams and Gary Crowley (S) lined up against Cranbourne’s Paul O’Dea and Andy Kidd in the final of the Casey Over 60 Men’s Pairs. Both Cranbourne players had formerly been long standing members of Narre Warren and might have expected something of a home ground advantage. However the Lions pair won the day and the trophy - another outstanding effort.
