Gone with the wind By Russell Bennett THE Cranbourne Cup won’t be rescheduled this spring after the gusty winds that tore through the state on Sunday ripped the hearts out of organisers who were forced to cancel the $300,000 race. Sunday’s 10-race meeting was postponed after just the first race on the card, with the strong winds - which were only predicted to get worse deemed to have posed a health and safety risk. Not only was Cranbourne’s showpiece race postponed, but so too was the $100,000 Apache Cat Classic. After consulting with the Cranbourne Turf Club, Racing Victoria determined that there was no suitable date remaining this Spring Racing Carnival to hold Casey’s signature race. There’s now a real possibility the race could be moved to Friday night, 21 April next year - the date of the turf club’s official 150th anniversary. The race would then return to its traditional spring timeslot in the 2017'18 racing calendar. “We’ll consider the possibility of running the Cranbourne Cup, as well as the Apache Cat Classic, in the autumn next year and ensure either way that some of the prizemoney from (the) meeting is used to bolster the club’s 150th anniversary race meeting on 21 April,” said Racing Victoria operations manager Paul Bloodworth. Cranbourne Turf Club chief executive Neil Bainbridge described the situation on Sunday as “devastating”, but added that if the Cup was moved to autumn, the club would try and hold it under lights “as a good point of difference”. “A lot of work goes into these days - it’s probably nine months of the year of planning and execution, and to think we had such a beautiful day yesterday (Saturday),” he said. “Today, the wind just got to a level where the jockeys and stewards thought it was not safe to continue in those conditions.

“It’s really frustrating.” Mr Bainbridge said the jockeys raised some initial concerns about the strong winds on Sunday, which led to the stewards ultimately deciding that the meeting needed to be postponed. “I think there’d be a lot of disappointed people, as we are,” he said.

“But, like us, people are realists and realise that those winds are pretty strong, and I think everyone understands that the decision was made and the reasons why it was made. “I think, generally, people understand that safety has to come first. They understand the predicament the club is in and we thank them for their
support and we’ll do our utmost to put on another Cranbourne Cup and another great day for our patrons.” Mr Bainbridge said he’d never been involved in a race meeting that had to be called off due to strong winds. “It’s just really frustrating that it happened on Cranbourne Cup day,” he said.
“It’s very disappointing and obviously it’ll be quite a costly exercise for the club. This is the club’s key meeting, which underwrites a lot of the financial performance for the year, and this year we’ll just need to work a little bit harder - which we’ll do - but obviously financially this is a significant hole.”

Commended for her work By Victoria Stone-Meadows A POLICE officer from Narre Warren has been awarded a divisional commendation for her exceptional work on a family violence case. On 13 June Senior Constable Jacinta (Jay) Allen, 31, attended an address in Narre Warren for a routine welfare check on a young woman and her infant child. Upon knocking on the door and receiving no response, Sen Const Allen checked the number plates of the car in the driveway and discovered it belonged to the women’s ex-partner, who had a history of abusive behaviour. “The car belonged to her expartner who she had a standing intervention order against,” Sen Const Allen said. “We did some searching, rang family members, but no one had seen her for a few days and that started to ring alarm bells.” When her and another officer were on their way back to the station to report the young woman as a missing person, they received a call from their sergeant. The young woman’s mother had called the police station and said her daughter was at the house the two officers had just checked.
“The ex-boyfriend had been there with her when we knocked on the door but had not allowed her to answer,” Ms Allen said. “We got a few more members to go back to the house and we were going to force our way in because she may have been in serious danger.” This time the young woman did answer the door to the police but refused to co-operate and give a statement It was then that Sen Const Allen showed an amazing amount of compassion for the young woman and sat with her for many hours to reassure her the police were trying to help but couldn’t without her assistance. “She had a young baby and I had to make her see it was bigger than just her,” Sen Const Allen said. “She eventually agreed to make a statement.” Sen Const Allen ended up with a statement from the young woman that was 13 pages long and detailed two years of violent history. “There was stuff she hadn’t told police before and some of it was pretty nasty,” she said. After giving her statement, the young woman was at Narre Warren Police Station when she started receiving text messages from her ex-partner. It was then that Sen Const
Allen arranged with the sergeant for two officers to go and arrest him. The man was charged with more than 50 offences relating to the years of abuse he inflicted on his former partner and on 6 September was sentenced to 12 months in prison. Sen Cont Allen was on duty with this case from 3pm on Monday 13 June until 7am on Tuesday 14 June. “It was a really good outcome and I hope it’s enough time for the young girl to rebuild with her baby and not have to be controlled by someone else,” she said. Since then, Sen Const Allen has caught up with the young woman and her mother to make sure she’s alright. “I have met with her and met the baby and mum. They are such a lovely family.” Though all of the incident and on receiving the award, Jay Allen has maintained her sense of humility and adherence to duty. “I get paid to do it, I don’t think it was a big deal,” she said “I just did my job, other people look at it differently like I went above and beyond but that’s what I’m there for, to help people when they can’t help themselves.”

Campaign race row hits By Cam Lucadou-Wells CASEY mayor Sam Aziz has reported a council election candidate and 26 other apparent supporters to the National Security Hotline over a Facebook post that accuses Cr Aziz of being anti-Muslim. The post by an apparent supporter of Springfield Ward candidate Faisal Najibi on 8 October urges Muslims not to vote for Cr Aziz under the mistaken assumption that he’s Muslim. “Sam Aziz is a strong ANTI MUSLIM and he is NOT a Muslim,” the post states. “I request all the Muslim community not to vote for him.” It described Cr Aziz as being in “strong opposition” to the new Afghan mosque proposed in Narre Warren North. On 11 October, Cr Aziz responded on Facebook that “these kind of people are extremely dangerous” and the
post’s language was “abhorrent”. “Knowing how they have operated in the past, this could incite violence against me. “Please share. Please beware.” Cr Aziz said the post invited people to “vote on religious lines” and made “unfounded allegations against me because I do not belong to a certain religion.” “Yet they accuse me of being racist!” Cr Aziz told Star News that the post was turning the election into a fight between “Muslims versus the rest of us” and recklessly attempting to incite violence against him. He said he would report Mr Najibi, the apparent author Atal Amin and 26 other tagged names to the National Security Hotline. “You don’t know what crack-pot is out there, sees anti-Muslim in capitals and what it might mean to them.”

When asked about Muslims who also felt fearful in the current political climate, Cr Aziz said: “That’s not my problem.” “I’m not anti-Muslim. I’m antiterrorist and I make decisions (on the mosque) on planning grounds. “My problem is administering the law of local government. Because I have rejected an application on planning grounds ... I shouldn’t be victimised for that. “We keep making laws for them. People will make excuses for them. People with attitudes like this will destroy what is a beautifully balanced society that we have today.
Aziz makes a case for re-election AGAINST CHANGE SAM Aziz, the City of Casey Mayor, is standing for reelection in Springfield Ward. He makes the case for why voters should stick with the status quo. At this election, please do not gamble with Casey’s future. We are seeing a huge number of candidates nominate. Some of these are new to the scene; others are either unsuccessful former councillors, or unsuccessful former candidates. Almost all of them, without exception, are parroting tokenistic slogans, without outlining a plan of how they intend to achieve anything. Again, almost without exception, they are all claiming that they will deliver lower rates, accountability and transparency, as if the current council has not done well in any of these areas. Nothing can be further from the truth! The facts are that this council has been the best performing since the formation of the City of Casey 21 years ago. Gone are the headlines in the news about dysfunction and councillors in-fighting. These have been replaced with headlines about council setting the agenda for a great city and a very bright future.
They have claimed that council does not consult enough. What absolute rubbish! Council consults on every major decision. We undertook consultation before we decided to build Bunjil Place, and we found out that 81 per cent of our residents support it. We also recently undertook consultation about the future of our city, which has seen a massive response. We are close to our residents and we have regular conversations. Some have also spoken about the monitor appointed by the State Government. The reality is that this was a political move, undertaken over some $2200 discrepancy across 37 properties for a private road (average of $59 per property). This ended up costing the ratepayers a massive $25,000 in fees for the monitor. $2,200 error! $25,000 in unfair fees imposed by the State Government,
which now need to be carried by our ratepayers. The monitor concluded that Casey had done everything to address the minor error and his report about council was described by a representative of the minister’s office as “glowing”! What is the problem then? Why are they still attacking Casey over this ridiculous issue? Why are they also ignoring the fact the Victorian Auditor General and the Independent Audit and Ethics Committee have given Casey top marks for its financial performance on behalf of its ratepayers? That same group - failed former councillors and failed former candidates - have been spreading that our residents are unhappy with the council. How can that be when our latest community satisfaction survey shows Casey excelling in every measure above the state average, including achieving a whopping seven points above the state average in the area of council leadership and direction? Casey is now in a great place. I ask you not to be fooled by their hollow slogans. Casey’s bright future will be placed at risk. Please consider voting for those who have already demonstrated they can deliver- not those that have only been able to demonstrate failure, and are now seeking to be returned, when they have been comprehensively rejected by Casey voters previously.
“When these people get away with that type of language ... then we’ll have a problem.” Mr Amin, a Casey businessman, that day deleted the post and denied its authorship. The same day Cr Aziz later posted he’d received a “threatening” followup text from Mr Amin – which the mayor said he’d report to local police. The message requested Mr Amin’s photo to be removed from Cr Aziz’s post or he’d report the matter to police and the media. Cr Aziz also posted a screenshot of a post by Mr Najibi that labelled one of Cr Aziz’s running mates – who is a
Muslim and architecture student – an “idiot” for preferencing the mayor. “I support all communities. I won’t support the disregard of the law, or anyone clearly in auto jihad mode,” Cr Aziz wrote. “Feeling sensitive there, Faisal? “Keep showing your true colours.” Casey Against Racism spokeswoman Lorraine Pratley said Cr Aziz “must have some sense how terrifying”, and his threat to call the National Security Hotline would be to Muslims. “I think he’s the one being threatening. “In his upside down world, he’s appealing to his hard-right voter support.” Casey Against Racism is advocating to vote all current councillors last due to their unanimous rejection of the mosque. It has endorsed 11 candidates, including Mr Faisal. Mr Faisal declined to comment.
Time for considered change FOR CHANGE RETIRED Cranbourne businessman Barry Drayton is advocating for change at this month’s Casey election. Here Mr Drayton sets out the case for change. The good news is that we have 81 candidates standing for election as a councillor at the forthcoming Casey Council Local Government elections. The bad news is that all eleven of the current councillors are standing for reelection. It is timely and imperative that we all ‘check out’ their claimed achievements over the past four years. Current Councillor re-election promotional material features terms like “advocated for”, “lobbying for”, “responded to”, “petitioned against” and on and on. Apart from commencing the erection of the incredibly expensive and totally unnecessary ego boosting new building to enable current councillors to live in workplace luxury and point to and say, “I built that”, we must search for what the current council has achieved to support and benefit the City of Casey and each of us, as ratepayers. The list of “advocated for” and the many other warm fuzzy terms is long, the outcomes, not so much (in some cases, not at all). It is important to ask why councillors and it seems, the current mayor in particular, are so very sensitive to any form of opinion that is in any way contrary to theirs, remembering of course it is us,
the ratepayers who put them there and to whom they owe allegiance. Worthy of thought and consideration when deciding how to vote is that discounting endless photo opportunities seized by current Casey councillors, how often in the past four years have you heard from, been contacted by, or in any way provided with evidence that your currently elected and outgoing councillors have the interests of each of us as ratepayers in any way a part of their agenda. There is no doubt the residents of Casey can and should be better served. Given there are 70 candidates standing for reelection, excluding the incumbents, make careful choices, and for the future of the growth of Casey in favour of all residents, place every existing councillor last when completing the ballot paper. It has been used before, but…… “It’s time for a change”.

Fashions came out the winner By Victoria Stone-Meadows DESPITE the Cranbourne Cup race being cancelled due to extreme weather, the ladies of the Fashion on the Field event braved the wind and rain to put on an amazing show. Frocks and hats were blown to and fro but the women persevered and the show went on with two winners being crowned best on field for the day. Young Lady of the Day was awarded to Melanie Hudson, 31, from Geelong for her elegant white and pastel peach ensemble. Ms Hudson said competing in the Cranbourne Cup Fashions on the Field was a last minute decision and she didn’t expect to win. “I decided to go up as a last minute thing because I had a baby free day,” she said. “I didn’t think I had a chance; everybody competing had a great chance and I’m sure it was very hard for judges to make a decision.” “I was ecstatic, over the moon, and a bit in shock when I did win,” she said. Ms Hudson was wearing a skirt by Chi Chi London, her top was Asilio, and hat (partly her own design) by Terri Oswald Millinery. The winner of the Lady of the Day category of the event was given to Emma Scodellaro from Greenvale for her classic Alexander McQueen dress and Jill and Jack millinery hat. Ms Scodellaro said she also attended the cup on a whim and was surprised to win the best dressed in her category. “I have had the dress for a few years and wore it at Oaks Day in 2013 and placed in the top 10 at Flemington,” she said. “I just had it sitting there and I love it so much, I only decided to go to Cranbourne the night before and thought ‘let’s pull it out’.” Ms Scodellaro said the dress means

Caring for carers at lunch By Victoria Stone-Meadows THIS Mental Health Week, the Hampton Park Uniting Church honoured those who are often forgotten in the discussion around mental health issues. On Tuesday 11 October, the Uniting Church held a lunch to honour those who care for friends and family members who suffer from a mental illness. The lunch was attended by carers who meet regularly at the church and use the space to share their experiences in a safe and judgment-free environment with the help of lifeAssist. Moderator of the Uniting Church Synod of Victoria and Tasmania, Reverend Sharon Hollis, spoke at the lunch about her own experiences caring for her late husband who suffered severe depression. “My partner has chronic depression that he tragically died of,” she said. “I had been a carer for him and continue to care for my daughters who have bad times occasionally. “It is a tough space but rewarding space and important for a community of carers when caring for people with a mental illness to have a space like this.” “Mental illness has a hidden nature and people can look very well when they meet other people, but if you live with this every day, you know they are struggling and carers struggle too.” Rev Hollis spoke on the importance of carers to have a support network around them and about sustaining and strengthening these spaces for the mental health of carers themselves. Members of the carers group told of how important the group has been for them in helping them care for their loved ones while looking out for them-

“It’s the highlight of my week, I look forward to Tuesdays and have been coming since September last year,” she said. “If I didn’t have this group, I don’t know where I would be. “It’s been a really great support through tough times; feeling like you are not alone and there are others out there going through not the same thing exactly but there is understanding and no judgement.”

Events like Mental Health Week and R U OK Day bring the issues around Mental Health to the fore, but Rev Hollis says there is a right and wrong way to approach talking about it. “Giving advice is the wrong thing to do,” she said. “It’s good to avoid giving advice and instead ask open ended questions, ask them what it is like, what can you do to help, do you want to talk about it?”
“People need to know and understand that they don’t have to talk, just listen, and not be afraid of silence,” she said. Mental Health Week runs from 9 to 15 October and encourages people to speak only about mental health issues to combat the stigma surrounding it. I AM writing on behalf of the Akoonah Park Men’s Shed to thank federal MP Jason Wood, state MPs Judith Graley and Brad Battin, and all City of Casey councillors and staff without whose help and support the Akoonah Park Men’s Shed would not have achieved the success it currently enjoys. Our latest project of a new recreational facility has only been made possible by the advice and financial aid we have received towards this project. When completed this will provide an area for social activities, a place to sit, relax and enjoy a cuppa amongst other members and guests. The membership has grown from 25 in June 2012 to 165 in September with approximately four new members joining each month. We have enjoyed very good support from the Akoonah Park Committee of Management along with local businesses and greatly appreciate all the help that they have provided since the start of the Men’s Shed at Akoonah Park. AS A resident of Edrington Ward I have made contact with all candidates in my ward regarding the current and proposed developments in the Berwick village area, in particular on the south side of Brisbane Street between Edwardes Street and Rutland Road where almost 70 per cent of properties were sold by the same real estate agent this year. If greedy developers have their way four single storey homes will be replaced by no less than 23 double storey dwellings in that short distance. And there is more to come! Residents are understandably concerned at how such development would erode the beautiful character and amenity of the area, with unsightly high buildings overlooking neighbours’ properties, loss of trees, bushes and gardens, and increased traffic flows. Anyone who is not convinced need only take a closer look at the current appalling development at 38-40 Brisbane Street, a prime example of my concerns for the future. I would encourage anyone who shares my concerns about inappropriate development in the City of Casey to contact their ward council candidates and gauge their attitude. We elect candidates to work on our behalf for the good of our neighbourhoods and our city. It is time well spent to make contact with these prospective councillors to find out what they feel about issues that are important to you and let them know you will be monitoring their performance in the council if they are elected. SO, COUNCIL elections have come round again and we all have the chance to elect the best available people prepared to represent us for the next four years. I notice that all 11 of the current group of councillors have offered themselves for reelection but have they really earned the reward of a further term in office? I suggest that, before completing and returning the postal voting document, each of us should reflect on the performance of the councillors representing our individual wards and ask ourselves whether these individuals truly represent the ratepayers and residents of Casey or are they either politically ambitious or is their prime objective simply to have the kudos of being addressed as ‘councillor’? Also, many of the candidates (over 80 for 11 positions) are really running mates to assist the current incumbent to get re-elected. Some of these can easily be identified by reading their voting preferences which are listed in the candidate statements on the City of Casey web site. Also, as a start, I suggest that all voters should study the Ombudsman’s Report, released in November 2015, on an investigation into the allegations of improper conduct of some Casey councillors. While the findings stated that misconduct could not be substantiated, it is noted that at

One has to ask why this was so. As a regular reader of council and planning committee agendas and minutes, it is noticeable that many motions put before council are passed without discussion, even if legitimate objections exist, leaving objectors with the expense and trauma of appealing to VCAT - which many ordinary people are reluctant to do. Also, on numerous occasions, council officers suggest that there is little point in objecting to certain proposals, particularly planning permit requests on the grounds that appeals to VCAT are likely to be successful. While this may be justified in some instances in other cases it may be just an excuse not to fully investigate the proposal. Even when cases are heard by VCAT, a weak case put forward by council representatives can result in VCAT overturning a council refusal to grant a permit. If councillors have a record of frequently accepting officers’ opinions without public discussion it is at least questionable whether they are truly representing the interests of ratepayers and residents. The decision on selecting who to vote for as number one on your ballot paper is yours alone, but identifying the ‘running mates’ and placing them towards the bottom of your selection will be a good start towards eliminating those who are not willing to safeguard the genuine interests of the electors. Don't be taken for a dummy SURELY one of the most important political instruments impacting on this outcome this local government election is the Victorian Electoral Act because it sets the standards and conditions that all candidates are required to meet. But, once again, its shortcomings are being totally ignored by all. The Victorian Electoral Act, however, still allows candidates to stand in a ward in which they do not live. While Casey Mayor Sam Aziz has criticised candidate Rex Flannery for endorsing Paul Richardson, who lives outside of the ward he is contesting, Sam Aziz has had nothing to say about Rise Up Australia Party councillor Rosalie Crestani who doesn’t live in Four Oaks Ward and has her election pamphlets authorized by a local Narre Warren resident. Why should a candidate not living in his/ her ward be allowed to stand for council? Doesn’t this defeat the purpose of having the electorate divided into wards? The VEA allows “dummy candidates” to stand at election time. Dummy candidates are not illegal, only unethical. The Victorian Electoral Commission and the minister don’t really care about what may be considered unethical conduct. Dummy candidates are about deceiving voters so they represent nothing less than an assault on democracy. Although all election statements have
been prefaced with a VEC disclaimer on the ballot paper, candidates can still write unsubstantiated and bigoted comments in election pamphlets about Islam and sharia law. John Glazebrook, Endeavour Hills.

Democracy could use a tweak or two HAVING taken a close interest in politics since I was taught “civics“ at school, I believe that democracy works as well in Australia as anywhere in the world. But the way elections are conducted in Casey and other local government areas is something of a travesty. Of course it is one of our basic rights to be free to stand for election, but the long list of almost anonymous candidates in every ward is a joke. From our experience at the last council election, it is near impossible to contact most of them - so how can a conscientious voter judge their ability and experience, or what they hope to contribute to council? And what would they suggest we do with our preferences, should we vote for them? I am a strong believer in preferential voting - which ensures that you must be supported by a majority of the voters to be elected, but I want to be able to make an informed and considered choice. We have been happy with the service we have had from our councillors in Balla Balla Ward - Colin Butler and currently Geoff Ablett, but how could we consider anyone else if we have no opportunity to meet or even read about any other candidate? Then there is no option but postal voting which is easily open to corruption. How does the returning officer know who filled in the ballot? Do council officers have a sample of every resident’s signature to check the voting envelopes? And if you walk around your local streets you could easily collect multiple copies of the voting papers. It would not be hard (or very expensive) to have a set of “attendance“ polling booths open for say a week - like the pre-poll centres that are run in state and federal elections. And postal voting only on request for people who really need it. There is a real need for reform to ensure that democracy is clearly seen to operate fairly at a local government level. Girl attacked with hammer By Cam Lucadou-Wells A SCHOOLGIRL has described her devastation after being struck three times with a hammer, punched and strangled in a sustained attack by her exboyfriend at his Hampton Park family home. The accused, 18, who the News has chosen not to name, pleaded guilty in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court to intentionally and recklessly causing injury as well as false imprisonment on 2 and 3 October. He sat with a bowed head in the dock as the 17-year-old victim - flanked by tearful family and friends - read aloud her victim impact statement at the 10 October hearing. The Year 11 student said the first 11 months of their relationship was “loving” but now she was terrified. “He was my first real boyfriend. “Now I can’t believe that this has happened to me.” She’d lost count of the beatings. Her body had been punched all over and she’d suffered black eyes and blood noses, she said. In November, people started noticing her excessively bruised arms while she was at the beach. She told them she played rugby. In the statement she added that when she told the accused
she was pregnant, he allegedly accused her of sleeping around, called her a slut and kicked and punched her stomach. “I made a decision to have a termination because I was terrified of the injuries to the unborn baby.” Those allegations, however, were not the subject of police charges. In another assault, he knocked out her front tooth. She is still struggling to pay for her repaired tooth and the termination, she told the court. The accused had “taken everything from me”, had made her feel “worthless”, unable to sleep and “afraid to love again”. Police prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Kerryn Steyn told the court that on 2 October, the ex-partners had met at a park near the accused's home. He told the girl that she had two choices - to come with him or he’d chase her down and harm her. She went with him inside his family home where she was punched. His mother allegedly told the accused: “I don’t want to hear her crying. You have to stop or I’ll take her home.” The victim indicated she wanted to go home and was led by the accused into a backyard shed where he struck her three times to the head with a hammer.

He told her if she called police “I’ll kill myself or you”. Angered by a video found on her phone, he choked her twice until she was unconscious. He later told police that he had got so angry that he had blacked out himself. He had choked her to scare her and stop her yelling, he allegedly told police. As he held a sharp tool near her eye, he told her again that he would kill her. The ordeal ended when his mother rang the victim’s family. The accused's defence lawyer said his client was not violent with his relatives at home, had no criminal history but had been recently sent away by his mother to a Brisbane relative to solve his anger problems. “His issue is anger. He’s blacked out during this incident. He gets so angry he blacks out.” Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said the accused was most likely facing imprisonment in a youth detention centre followed by parole or a youth justice order. He was put on a full, indefinite intervention order to protect the victim. He was remanded in custody for sentencing at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 21 November.

By Victoria Stone-Meadows ST Agatha’s Primary School in Cranbourne has been learning about where their food comes from, and in the process honing their artistic skills. The school participated in the Picasso Cows project where students design and paint a life size fiberglass cow while learning about food production. Arts and environment teacher at St Agatha’s Rachael Tharle said the project was a great meeting of two worlds and taught the students a lot. “It was a chance to form an environmental network connection with an environmental and
art focus,” she said. “The two combined made a fantastic opportunity for the school to learn in the program.” During 10 weeks of term two, students focused on paddock to plate, discovering how food is produced and designing their cow for a competition against other schools participating in the project. While St Agatha’s didn’t win the competition for their cow’s design, Ms Tharle said the project was more about the process than the finished product. “The students enjoyed it immensely,” she said.
“We have 540 students and a majority of the school participated from Foundation to Year 6.” Ms Tharle said the project tied in with the school’s focus on healthy living and teamwork. “Particularly in the Year 2 group, we looked at the healthy living unit and the project tied in nicely with that,” she said. “The whole school has a focus on teamwork and collaboration, and this program brought that all together nicely.” Eleven schools from the Melbourne area participated in the Picasso Cows project which runs nationally every year.

Pool for the screen Neil Bainbridge said the club and the Cranbourne Racecourse Recreation Reserve Committee of Management are excited for the development. “The Recreation Reserve Committee of Management has approved a 21-year lease for developer for the site,” he said. “It is a matter of planning through council at the moment but we remain hopeful and confident as this will be a great asset to the community.” According to Mr Macklin, the plan for the development aims to create a complex that while working
alongside the turf club, is an entirely separate entity. “Alongside the candy bar for the cinema, we are also putting in a coffee lounge for the daytime so people can go from a lounge to a bar in the evening with food,” he said. “We also want to include a terrace area and cocktail lounge with a friendly lounge environment, no TAB and only a little bit of a racing theme.” TM Design Group is still planning on holding a competition for the community to name the complex so the Cranbourne community can really own the venue.
Much-needed boost for Casey Hospital CASEY Hospital will grow by 160 beds and four operating theatres under a boosted expansion announced by the State Government on 9 October. The government says it will inject an extra $28.6 million into the project - which will now cost $135 million - due to soaring demand for acute health care in Melbourne’s south-east. Without the extra boost, it was expected demand would outstrip supply within two years of the project’s completion. Construction is expected to start next year on the extension, which includes an intensive care unit and a day surgery unit. It is expected to open for patients in late 2019. New education and training facilities for medical, nursing and allied health students will also be built under a partnership between Monash
Health and Monash University. As one of Australia’s fastest growing areas, Casey is home to a record 86 babies born each week and an average 7300 extra residents a year. At the hospital on 9 October, Health Minister Jill Hennessy said investment was needed to meet demand in the future. Premier Daniel Andrews said a “bigger, better” Casey Hospital would mean more families in the south-east can get treatment close to home. Narre Warren South MP Judith Couacaud Graley will lead a community advisory group to help “shape” the project. “Our community is a growing one and as we expand Casey Hospital to meet the needs of local families, we want them all to have a say and work with us every step of the way.”

THE proposed development of the derelict Cranbourne Swimming Pool on Grant Street is moving forward with developers TM Design Group erecting boarding around the site as early as next week. The design currently under consideration by Casey Council will see the old pool transformed into an entertainment complex including four 99 seat cinemas. Director of TM Design Group, Ian Macklin, said while there is a few hurdles to overcome with the council planning permit, he is hopeful things will move quickly.
“The permit will hopefully go through soon and I will be attending the site very shortly to start the clean-up, next week sometime.” The former pool site has been a magnet for graffiti vandals and squatters since it closed in 2009, unable to compete with the popularity of Casey RACE in Cranbourne East. Mr Macklin said the first step in developing the site will be to secure it to keep people out of the neglected building. “First we have to clean it all up and secure it, we don’t want people in there,” he said. Camera cash By Victoria Stone-Meadows HAMPTON Park CFA has partnered with Marriott Waters branch of Bendigo Bank to raise money for a thermal imaging camera for the brigade. The volunteer fire brigade is seeking support from the community to help them purchase a camera that can detect heat signatures and potentially save lives. First Lieutenant at Hampton Park CFA, Chris Gomolis, said the camera will be a valuable piece of equipment for the station. “This device allows us to see in the dark or in thick smoke and it becomes an asset to search and rescue,” he said.
“It would be used predominantly in house fires and allows us to search a building where our normal eyesight can’t assist.” The camera works by displaying heat signatures on a screen so firefighters can see where heat is coming from when there is no obvious heat or flames. “Its operation is to pick up heat signatures of a person or animals and hot spots in walls,” Lt Gomolis. “If there has been a fire in a house or other building, during the overhaul process where we extinguish after the main fire is out, we can use the camera to look into the walls, and instead of ripping down walls, we can
pick up heat signatures through plaster.” The brigade is aiming to raise $13,000 to buy the camera and the Marriott Waters Bendigo Bank has pledged $1000 so far. While the camera is expensive, Lt Gomolis said it will be worth the money to keep his firefighters and the community safe. “The way we see it is if it helps save one person then it is money well spent,” he said. It’s None Of Our Business But ... CASEY police have issued a warning on the ‘scary clown’ movement – soon after a man allegedly wearing a clown mask, wielding an axe and approaching a woman in a car was arrested in Moe. “We know a lot of people are involved for a bit of fun but we want to be clear – this behaviour is not amusing, and in many cases it is criminal,” police posted on their Casey Eye Watch page on Facebook. Recently a clown was snapped outside Empire night club in Narre Warren at night – with the image spread over social media. Empire Nightclub shared the photo with the warning: “Believe it or not, this isn’t the biggest clown we have seen at the club before!! STAY SAFE EVERYONE.” It was later followed by a comment that revealed that it was the ’Empire Clown’ which would make an appearance at a Halloween event. Police advise that if you’re frightened by a ‘scary clown’ to call triple-zero. Top awards for local exporters By Victoria Stone-Meadows BUSINESSES in Casey have been recognised for their hard work at the 37th Governor of Victoria Export Awards. The awards highlight the contributions local businesses make to the Victorian economy through their export trade. Lynbrook-based pipe welding and fusion equipment producer, Worldpoly, took home the Victorian Export Award for Innovation Excellence. The family-run business have been in operation for over 50 years and supply equipment all over the world for mining, irrigation, water supply and distribution, sewer and drainage, gas mains, and more. Clyde farming legends Schreurs and Sons were awarded the Agribusiness Award for overall excellence across horticultural and agricultural business. Farm owner and operator Chris Schreurs said the award is a great honour and he is proud of the hard work his cousins and other employees had put into the farm over the years. “It’s very much a high honour and it means a lot,” he said. “It reflects on a lot of hard

On the route to more jobs By Casey Neill A NEW bus service could cut unemployment and boost business in Dandenong South. Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams announced the route 890 would run between Lynbrook Railway Station and Dandenong Railway Station and take in Abbotts Road in Dandenong South. She said it would start on Sunday 13 November and “help get people to where the jobs are and also helps businesses to secure the skilled workforce they need”. “Lack of public transport connections can be a major obstacle to employment,” Ms Williams said. “This is all about jobs and creating opportunities.” Every day MatchWorks business development manager Maria Ferreira-Correia works with job-seekers who don’t have cars. “Seventy to 80 per cent of our candidates don’t have transport,“ she said. “When you become unemployed, that’s one of the first things to go as they’re quite expensive to run.” Ms Ferreira-Correia said the new bus route would help employers to “benefit from some really good candidates”. “What’s stopping them from getting a job is they don’t have a car,” she said. “There are jobs out there.

in opening up the Dandenong South employment corridor more, particularly to young people without a licence and secondary school students seeking work placement opportunities as part of their studies,” he said. The new service forms part of the State Government’s Better Bus Networks program, which includes four new routes and 13 realignments to Cranbourne’s bus network. Timetables for the new network will be available on ptv. vic.gov.au from Monday 17 October.

OFFICER OPENS UP The once sleepy suburb of Officer is being transformed into a vibrant, commercial and residential hub attracting first, second and third home buyers who are looking for their slice of real estate heaven. Officer currently has an estimated 32,390 households and is projected to grow to a population of 175,562. KR Peters director Peter Nicholls likens Officer to “virgin land” about to take off. The sales staff at KR Peters, which is selling both Savannah Estate and Milli Terraces - two of the area’s newest developments - are so confident in the future of the suburb that they are opening an office in the old post office. “We believe it’s got more potential – it’s where all the growth is going to happen,” Mr Nicholls said. “In the past two years Clyde North and Clyde have been runaway successes but Officer is up and coming.” Savannah is at the corner of Brunt and Rix roads and is surrounded by parkland and proposed sporting facilities. The Rise at Officer is located at the gateway
to the suburb and is a boutique neighbourhood in arguably Officer’s best location, north of the Princes Highway and bordering the popular suburb of Beaconsfield. The development has proven popular with buyers who want to build larger homes for their growing families and for professional or retired couples who are looking to downsize from rural properties to a stylish urban community in an established area. Grandvue is one of the older more established estates in Officer with a wide range of primary, secondary schools and colleges nearby and a proposed new shopping centre across the road and the Toomuc recreation reserve only minutes away. Close Narre Warren North Power Station at Quarry Road. If someone living within 300m gets cancer and a good lawyer it could snowball into an expensive public relations disaster. Three ways to make council budget savings: Capital works spending has to be brought under control. Observe programmed priority. Reduce loan repayments by paying back the debts current councillors have approved. Reduce over-regulation e.g. allow residents to store their caravan, motor home and trailer (car, horse, boat, etc,) at home without an annual permit. Enable residents to fund periodicals in the libraries. Your view on half-mast Casey flag: For Cr Aziz to use this tradition for political games is shameful and a disgrace. Current Casey councillors don’t seem to be capable of restraining Cr Aziz. Law-and-order solutions: Council officers should be assigned to improve community safety through expanding Neighbourhood Watch schemes and improve community engagement. Stop playing political games with the issue to ensure community good will is not wasted on political stunts. SAM AZIZ (preferences Berkelmans) What ward/municipality do you live in: 21 metres from Springfield Ward as a result of boundary re-distribution. Political party membership: None Place of Worship: Christian Campaign sponsors and donors: Self funded Campaign cost/budget: Not yet known. Top three projects you’ll achieve on council: Roads: Upgrading Narre Warren Station to a premium station, unclogging Webb Street, and resolving O’Shea Road and Clyde Road congestion by lobbying for a further $1 billion funding by the State and Federal governments. Jobs: attracting significant investment to create jobs, including concluding negotiations with defence, IT, retail and manufacturing industries. Safety: Lobbying for more police and stronger laws to protect the community. Three ways to make council budget savings: Continuing with the effectiveness and efficiency program already delivering $11 million in savings. Continuing with our digital strategy which will not only make savings but make it easier for residents to access council services. Increasing innovation in purchasing and tendering, such as the recent initiative to give clubs and sporting organisations opportunity to tender for work on their own pavilions. Your view on half-mast Casey flag: Symbolic gesture to demonstrate that our community is under threat from rising crime. Law-and-order solutions: As outlined in the motion that I moved: more police, tougher sentences, joint State/ Federal taskforce, deportation for dual citizens who commit offences punishable by jail in a gang formation and empowering the community to be vigilant about personal security.

Campaign costs: Half of what Mr Richardson pays. Top three projects: Reducing costs, working within a budget, bringing the community together as one. Three ways to to make budget savings: Supply materials to sporting groups to let the clubs work on their own projects – which would cut out contractors at higher costs. Reduce overseas travel if not needed (teleconferencing). Prioritise capital work projects. Your view on half-mast Casey flag: When a Head of State dies or a community member who has put in outstanding service not a problem. Law and order solutions: Courts are too soft, make all judges do a night shift with the police. KASUNI MENDIS (preferences Flannery) What ward/municipality do you live in: Springfield Political party membership: No Place of Worship: Sakyamuni Sambuddha Buddhist Temple, Berwick Campaign sponsors and donors: Friends, family and selffunded. Campaign cost/budget: $2000 Top three projects you’ll achieve on council: Adequate maintenance of footpaths, roads and parks in a timelier manner. More youth participation in our community and reaching out to disengaged members of our society, to stop them from committing violent crimes. Address domestic violence and elder abuse at a local level. Three ways to make council budget savings: Reducing councillor allowances – over $400,000 in 2014-15. Not demolishing a perfectly usable building to make way for new council offices masked under a performing arts venue, but that deal is too far gone to stop. Make sure that council funds are spent on things that maximise utility for all members of our community, such as basic infrastructure. Your view on half-mast Casey flag: A pointless gesture that is nothing but grandstanding. It is all well and good for the council to all of a sudden lobby for more police and tighter laws come election time. They have no one else but themselves to blame for the escalation of crime in the City of Casey. Law-and-order solutions: For every criminal we put away there will be another to take its place if we don’t stop these disengaged members of our society from resorting to anti-social behaviour. We must engage with such people and provide them with programs and support, which they are sorely lacking and stop them from committing crimes. I am a big believer in having local police work closely with young adults to build a relationship prior to them starting to offend. Council maintaining a close relationship and planning strategies with police is essential. TIMOTHY JACKSON What ward/municipality do you live in: Edrington. Political party membership: Independent Place of Worship: N/A Campaign sponsors and donors: Myself, close friends and family. Campaign cost/budget: My budget is small and instead of flashy advertisements around town I am focussing my time and effort on ensuring that my team of volunteers and I are out in the local community talking with residents to understand what matters to them. Top three projects you’ll achieve on council: Taking the politics out of local government by making sure council gets on with the job that residents expect us to do. Preventing crime in our community by investing in CCTV and adequately supporting community groups and sporting clubs to keep our kids off the streets. Stopping the waste of council funds on things like council’s new $125 million office complex at Bunjil Place. Three ways to make council budget savings: Reduced spending on large projects that could be delivered in a more cost effective manner. Stopping the waste on council dinners and overseas junkets. Ensuring the council is operating within its means as every ratepayer and family does. Your view on half-mast Casey flag: Casey residents deserve practical solutions to our rising crime like CCTV cameras and crime prevention programs, not half-baked political stunts. Law-and-order solutions: Making sure that council works hand in hand with the local police and the State Government to ensure our police are properly funded and have all the support they need. A greater rollout of CCTV cameras in our town centres. More investment in local community initiatives such as young offender programs, so that when the offenders return to our community they simply do not go back and commit more crimes. RILEY BAIRD What ward/municipality do you live in: Live near the border of my ward. Edrington because that is where I have worked, gone to school and grown up in. Political party membership: The Greens, will remain independent while on council. Place of Worship: Religion is a private matter and I choose to worship at home. Campaign sponsors and donors: Self-funded, with volunteers handing our flyers and doorknocking. The Greens have provided some materials. Campaign cost/budget: Estimated $700. My main expenses were flyers, campaign signs and business cards. Top three projects you’ll achieve on council: More regulation of pokies machines – Casey has the second highest gambling losses in Victoria, but has done little to stop this. Protecting our green spaces from inappropriate development and ensuring better pedestrian and cycling infrastructure. Lobbying for greater police presence in Casey. Three ways to make council budget savings: If councillors want to travel outside Victoria, they should pay for it themselves. Transitioning to renewable energy would save millions of dollars in energy costs. Council shouldn’t spend money on things no-one wants. Your view on half-mast Casey flag: Putting the flag at halfmast won’t make Casey any safer. We need councillors who will take action to stop crime, instead of just talking about it, and that’s what I plan to do when I’m on council. Law-and-order solutions: We need more police stations, and we need to stop closing the ones we have. We need to focus on the rights of victims, and work harder to ensure all criminals come to justice. ANTHONY DISSANAYAKE What ward/municipality do you live in: Edrington Political party membership: Absolutely none. Place of Worship: St Michael’s Parish, Berwick. Campaign sponsors and donors: None. Campaign cost/budget: I own a printing and sign company. Therefore my expenses are low. Top three projects you’ll achieve on council: I will fight hard to minimise future unnecessary rate increases, more support for our senior citizens and increase and redistribute funding effectively and efficiently to community organisations and sporting clubs. Three ways to make council budget savings: Oppose any increases to councillor allowances and review of higher management salary increases, oppose councillors going
on ratepayer funded overseas trips, reduce council’s ratepayer funded functions. Your view on half-mast Casey flag: I support this. Halfmast Casey flag should remain the same until the council gets its desired action from the government. Law-and-order solutions: More police, tougher sentencing (this is very important) and a task force on violent street gangs. RAY PERERA (preferences Serey, Morland) What ward/municipality do you live in: Edrington Political party membership: Totally independent Place of Worship: Catholic Church Campaign sponsors and donors: None Campaign cost/budget: Top three projects you’ll achieve on council: Cut waste, cut rates, cut the cost of childcare. Three ways to make council budget savings: Millions of dollars being wasted on various projects, reduce bureaucracy and red tape, increase efficiency, many roles and positons which are not required. Your view on half-mast Casey flag: Law-and-order solutions: Increase police presence in key areas and at key times, through advocacy with the State Government; a campaign or a drug free Casey; possible look at increasing power to the police in certain areas obviously through liaison with the State Government. SUSAN SEREY (preferences Morland) What ward/municipality do you live in: Edrington Political party membership: Liberal Place of Worship: Campaign sponsors and donors: Family and supporters. Campaign cost/budget: Modest Top three projects you’ll achieve on council: Advocate for greater investment in roads. Greater emphasis on economic development, business and creating jobs locally. Delivering services our community needs to keep pace with population growth. Three ways to make council budget savings: Implement efficiency and effectiveness study. Saying no to councillors generating spending on a whim rather than strategic and community priorities. Cutting back on waste. Your view on half-mast Casey flag: I understand the frustration of Casey’s councillors in relation to the concerns about community safety, however, I am of the view that those concerns can be expressed in other ways rather than flying a half mast flag which should be reserved for expressions of honour, grief or respect. Law-and-order solutions: Lobby for increased police numbers to match Casey’s growth; no cutting back of police station hours; stricter enforcement of existing laws especially involving car jackings and home invasions; use of CCTV in crime hotspots, briefing up Neighbourhood Watch and reversal of Victoria’s weakened bail laws which send a message that there are no consequences for young offenders who flout the law and greater youth engagement in positive activities and relationship such as mentoring programs, and greater access to sporting and entertainment opportunities in Casey for young people. MICK MORLAND (preferences Serey) What ward/municipality do you live in: Edrington Political party membership: Liberal Place of Worship: Non-practising Catholic Campaign sponsors and donors: Nil Campaign cost/budget: $5000-$10,000 Top three projects you’ll achieve on council: Lobby for all needs within the Edrington Ward with other councillors – no one councillor can achieve any project without the support of his fellow councillors. Support the Five Year capital works plan to delivery orderly projects within the correct time frame. Three ways to make council budget savings: Look at the running costs, services within council and get the best tenders. Your view on half-mast Casey flag: Agree with the council decision. Law-and-order solutions: Council does not enforce the law, the police do. Our job is the lobby on behalf of our residents with the police to make our city the best and safest place to live.

Cooking for Christmas
THE Lynbrook Lantern Festival lit up Banjo Paterson Park on Saturday 8 October with thousands of people coming out to enjoy the fun. Lynbrook Residents Association Events Manager Vanessa Watson said the 2016 Lynbrook Lantern Festival was the best and brightest yet. “It was absolutely fantastic, our best yet,” she said. “Had a massive crowd of 4000 plus people turn out, which was just great.” As well as the painting of the lanterns there were three jumping castles, a petting zoo, sumo wrestling and heaps more family fun. Ms Watson said the day went very smoothly and organisers couldn’t have been luckier with the break in the weather. “There weren’t any big issues and we were very lucky we held it the day before the big winds,” she said. “We had great weather even though there was only a top of 17 it was sunny all afternoon until the night and there was no wind. It was a perfect night.” Ms Watson extended her thanks to all the volunteers that made the event possible. “Without the Sikh volunteers or the volunteers from our committee as well as other community members, the event would not run,” she said. “We just wouldn’t be able to do it without them and we are very grateful.”
THE Hampton Park Uniting Church is seeking a volunteer to help co-ordinate its annual Christmas lunch. The church lacks a kitchen co-ordinator this year and is looking for someone with the skills to run the kitchen for a two course lunch for about 120 to 150 people. Parish minister The Reverend Mat Harry said the task is no small undertaking but is sure someone in the community will have the skills and heart to take on the position. “We would love to connect with someone who has got skills to run the kitchen on Christmas Day and the planning leading up to it,” he said. “I can be quite a significant job but it’s very rewarding. “We need to begin planning the menu and make sure this new person is familiar with the kitchen and the other volunteers.” The traditional Christmas lunch provided by the volunteers provides a place for those in the community who may not have people to share the holiday season with. Kidd named top coach By Russell Bennett WARRAGUL’S stunning transformation from Gippsland League cellardwellers to finalists has been in no small part due to the work of senior coach, and former Narre Warren great, Steven Kidd, and he was recognised recently at the AFL Gippsland Coaches and Community Awards. Kidd was named Senior Coach of the Year and was also judged by the coaches association as Coach of the Year for the Gippsland League. The Gulls finished last on the ladder in 2015 with just two wins from their 18 games but this year made the top four with a 9-9 record before going down by two goals to local rival Drouin in the elimination final. “When I got there I probably didn’t quite understand how far back Warragul was,” Kidd explained with trademark honesty. “We were coming from a long way back and there wasn’t a lot of genuine excitement around the place. “It was tough to unite the club but the players really dug in and there was a lot of support from the parents. “We played a lot of Under 18s in year one.” And the rest, as they say, is history. Kidd, who turns 40 in January and has played over 300 senior games - the bulk of those at Narre, said it was clear to him that he had to be a player-coach to start off his tenure at the Gulls. But he retired from playing with two games to go this year. He knew it was time for the youngsters to step up. He paid tribute to one of Warragul’s guns, Nate Paredes, adding: “He’s just so hard at the ball, and he’s still only 21. He’s a real role model for the players to look up to.” But he didn’t stop there - heaping praise on another player particularly familiar to South East Football Netball League (SEFNL) fans, Brad Scalzo. The relentless on-baller took home

The Gulls coach also praised skipper Chris Carey’s work in the ruck, and forwards Brayden Fowler and Matt Rennie - while also adding that the
likes of Nick Stevenson, Jake Hughes and Tom Axford had really stepped up to the plate and stuck at it. Kidd, who at Warragul is in his first senior coaching role, said the future looks particularly bright for the Gulls. “We haven’t lost many players and we don’t want to add too many either,” he said. “We want to continue to give the kids a chance to develop. “When I got there, there was nothing holding back the group to create
their own culture. “That was the major thing at Narre - the guys sticking together through those hard times, and then the young kids who were in the Stingrays coming through to learn from the senior players. “That’s what I’m focussing on here.” Kidd said boosting the professionalism at the club would continue to be a focus moving forward, adding the
focus would be year-by-year. “We’re taking baby steps, but we’re making real headway,” he said. “I’ve absolutely loved my time at Warragul so far, and the (playing) group has been a massive part of that. “They listen, they’re prepared to learn, and they’re really respectful.” Kidd said the support he’d received from his family and friends had been fantastic, with his parents originally from Warragul.

HUMAN Powered Vehicle (HPV) racing is the most action-packed form of racing most people have never seen. It could be described as a pedal-powered Bathurst, so it’s only fitting that Saturday’s event at Casey Fields was taking place at the same time the Supercars were gearing up for the Top 10 shootout at Mount Panorama. HPV racing is a team sport where both adults and kids push themselves to their absolute limits, all in the name of teamwork, sportsmanship and mateship.
The eight-hour race at Cranbourne on Sunday is the last of the 2016 HPV series before the famous RACV Energy Breakthrough 24-hour event in Maryborough next month. Mark Fidone has poured countless hours of blood, sweat and tears into the sport. He’s involved in a community-based school team with four vehicles. On Saturday at Cranbourne there were 90 teams competing in the race across the community, senior secondary, middle secondary, and junior secondary categories. There were up to eight riders per team, with one in the community section made up of one
brave rider going it alone. It’s not a sport for the fainthearted, with some vehicles capable of travelling in excess of 60 kilometres per hour. But it’s not necessarily the team of fastest riders that will win a section - they need to work together, through pitstops and rider changes, and even recovering from crashes. “You’re relying on everybody, not just one or two riders,” Mark said. “We’ve found with our teams that it’s really good for bonding the kids together, and they end up with a really good bunch of friends outside of racing.”

Swans send King and his Co packing By Nick Creely VICTORIAN PREMIER CRICKET THE script couldn’t have been written any better, as Casey-South Melbourne claimed an early season scalp, defeating last year’s runners-up Ringwood by four wickets in an entertaining clash at Casey Fields on Saturday. Ringwood skipper David King won the toss and elected to bat, on a glorious spring day in Melbourne. Last season’s runners-up Ringwood, were seen as the clear favourites to defeat Casey, however, as the club has stated on numerous occasions over the pre-season, this young list is capable of going to great heights this cricket season. In what was a terrific start for the Swans, speedster Nathan Lambden snared Joseph Loorham caught behind for a duck early, setting the tone for an exceptional display of disciplined bowling and fielding. The energy within the group was plain to see, as the fielders built pressure, kept the talk up and made life difficult for the visiting favourites. Casey were able to constantly restrict Ringwood from getting any fluency in their batting, and constant wickets halted the Rams from making a charge, leaving them with a lowly total of 126 off 48.2 overs. At one point, a stunned Ringwood batting line-up was withering at 7/46, and Casey were to
do no wrong. One of the biggest moments was the prized scalp of David King. The gun batsman ploughed almost 1000 runs last season, but the Swans bogged the opener down, keeping him to just 13 off 56 balls, before frustration got the better of him and Brendan Rose claimed him. But a few late partnerships ensured Ringwood got to a total that they could defend with a strong bowling line-up. Opening bowlers Leigh Diston (1/40 off 10) and spearhead Nathan Lambden (2/9 off 9.2) bowled with great pace and pressure, while Brendan Rose (2-10 off 10) and Dylan Hadfield (2/31 off 10) bowled accurately and bogged the Rams down. But it was a young left-arm quick that truly arrived on the Premier stage; Jackson Fry. The 22-year-old, who first became a staple of Casey’s first XI in the latter stages of last season, stunned the Rams with a brilliant spell of bowling, and finished with 3/34 off his 9 overs. His first victim was the left-handed Jackson Freeman, hooping the ball through the gates and knocking out middle-stump. Just four balls later, in the very same over, Fry knocked over Jonty Rushton in a similar vein, with his celebration resembling some of Mitchell Johnson’s very best.

Jackson Fry was a constant headache for the Rams. 159878 But it was also Fry’s ability to take crucial wickets that stood out. With Brendan Walsh (30) and Patrick Ashton (23) starting to get going and the Rams possibly looking at lifting their score to 150 and upwards, Fry was brought back into the attack by skipper Lachlan Sperling, and snared the key wicket of Ashton caught behind. Fry bowls with aggression, and attributes his improvement to a solid pre-season with the club. “My pre-season went quite well, with my main focus being working on my variations and gaining more fitness to bowl longer spells,“ Fry said. Speaking on the game, Fry had a clear plan to bog the Rams down and apply constant pressure. “My main focus was to bowl good areas, and restrict the runs through the middle overs of Ringwood’s innings,“ Fry explained. With the bat, the Swans set themselves to play patiently and weather the storm of some of Premier Cricket’s top-line pace bowlers. Matt Fotia and Michael Topp of Ringwood troubled the Swans early, with Kasun Suriaratchie and Ashan Wijayakumara getting through a very testing first period with the new ball. Fotia and Topp, who have played plenty of second XI cricket for Victoria, were aggressive, but a determined Swans were unrelenting and set the scene for an entertaining run chase. THE coaching merry-go-round for the 2017 Ellinbank and District Football League season is already in full-swing, with Lang Lang and Longwarry both appointing new coaches very familiar to South East Football Netball League (SEFNL) fans. For the Tigers, 2017 will mark the return to the club of a favourite son with former Beaconsfield premiership-winning mentor Clint Evans making his way back to the showgrounds.
Evans coached Lang Lang from 2007 to 2010 - including leading the side to a grand final berth - and returns to the club after coaching stints at Hampton Park and Beaconsfield. The Tigers have already resigned the bulk of their 2016 playing group, with further player announcements to come. Longwarry, meanwhile, has secured the services of threetime senior premiership player at Pakenham and Garfield Daniel Fry as its new playing senior coach.
Fry has played over 200 senior games and booted over 600 goals. A former interleague representative with the MPNFL, he was also named in Pakenham’s team of the decade. He has signed on with the Crows on a multi-year deal and is hell-bent on making a real impact in his first senior coaching role. Young and old mix it up By Russell Bennett and Nick Creely WEST GIPPSLAND CRICKET ASSOCIATION SO often the mark of a perennially contending side is its ability to keep rejuvenating its playing stocks while still defeating its strongest challengers. And right from the outset this Premier season, in the match of Round 1, Kooweerup showed that it can defeat one of its strongest challengers in Tooradin while giving invaluable experience to some of its stars of tomorrow - Cody Miller, Jackson Berry, and Jason Cox. Tooradin won the toss and elected to bat, with Tom Hussey and Russell Lehman striding to the wicket for the first time as an opening pairing in clubland. But the partnership was short-lived, with Jess Mathers snaring Hussey legbefore for just two. Cal O’Hare (in his return game to the Tooradin line-up), Aaron Avery and Bradey Welsh all came and went in a short space of time but young guns Josh Lownds (49) and Matt Welsh (36 not out) steadied - carrying their side to 9/184 from its 40 overs. Demons favourite son Matt Davey opened the bowling with Mathers and had a real impact, with his slower ball in particular causing all sorts of headaches for the Tooradin top and middle orders. He finished with 3/25 from his eight overs, while John Bright - bowling later in the innings - was also super effective with 3/27. New Demons skipper Mark Cooper used his bowling changes to great effect - refusing to let the Tooradin batsmen find any real consistent rhythm at the crease but it was with the bat that he really made his presence felt. Cooper, long an adversary of the Demons at Cardinia, put on a real show - leading the Demons by example with an unbeaten and virtually chanceless 91 as they ultimately passed the Gulls’ total just four wickets down. In other results from the Premier division, Upper Beaconsfield defeated Cardinia in stunning fashion. Kyle Gibbs (3/24) was super impressive early, claiming the prized scalps of Ben Maroney and Bulls skipper Neil Barfuss (caught) - both without troubling the scorers. Pakenam Upper/Toomuc got its season off to a strong start with a big win against Emerald. The Bombers batted first, posting 4/182 on the back of skipper AJ Walker (86) and a cameo Mitchell Daley (33). But the Yabbies were too strong, surpassing the Bombers 3/184, with coach Brad Senior (65) and Ryan De Reus (53 not out) the stars. Pakenham hit the ground running, crushing Merinda Park after posting a dominant 2/196. The Lions then restricted the Cobras to just 129 in reply. Young gun Zac Chaplin (62 not out), Chris Smith (67), Tom Tyrrell (32) and Chris Savage (29 not out) all smashed the Cobras, with Sanjeev Dhankhar (30), one of very few who could hold their heads high. In District, Carlisle Park lost its opening clash with Clyde by seven wickets at Carlisle Park Reserve. Winning the toss and electing to bat, the Vikings started off brilliantly, with Ammar Bajwa (62) and Jason Hameeteman (28) putting on 66 for the first wicket. This provided the platform for a competitive total of 5/185 off 40 overs. But Cougars superstar Gavin Britt stole the show; smashing 93 not out to chase down the total with seven overs to spare.

Rebels skipper Tom Smith sent the Marygoons into bat, and they posted a competitive 9/189 off 40 overs. Opener Dean Henwood (34) batted well; skipper Daniel Glen (38) was influential, while Sean Somers (58) finished the innings off with a bang. Devon Meadows was left stunned by Kalgidhar, who won an entertaining clash at Lakeside Oval. Kalgidhar skipper Rupinder Singh won the toss and elected to bat, with Sunny Paul (68) and Ashish Uppal (50) combining to lift the side to a very solid 6/194 off their 40 overs. The Panthers were unable to break through and take consistent wickets, with only Ash Adams (2/55) taking multiple scalps. Lisa makes the final By Nick Creely HSBC and the Australian Rugby Union have announced the finalists for the 2016 HSBC Volunteer of the Year, and Endeavour Hills Rugby Club’s very own Lisa Campbell is one of them. With over 400 entries overall, Lisa has made it down to the last five, with her impressive work as a hard-working volunteer at her club this season not going unnoticed. The award aims to recognise those individuals who volunteer their time and make a significant contribution to community rugby across Australia. Lisa has been heavily involved with the Endeavour Hills Rugby Club since moving from New Zealand four years ago. Over the past four years, Lisa has served on the committee, helping the struggling club in a variety of time-consuming jobs. She has served in roles such
as Director of Juniors, Junior Registrar, Team Manager of the Under 10 and Under 18 teams, Communications, Organiser of various fundraisers, merchandise as well as facilitating a preseason skills and drills program for the club’s junior players. Lisa is at the club for up to five days a week, and balancing work and family life at the same time. Her passion about the growth and development of rugby in Victoria has seen her reach great heights at the club. CEO of HSBC Australia, Tony Cripps, paid tribute to the hard-working volunteers, citing their utmost importance in rugby thriving at grassroots level. “Volunteers are vital to the success of rugby clubs across Australia. “HSBC is proud to recognise those who give so much to the game and keep rugby thriving at its grassroots. “Congratulations to all the finalists of this year’s Volun-
teer of the Year awards,” Cripps said. This was echoed by ARU General Manager of Community Rugby and Strategy, Andrew Larratt, who acknowledged just how valued volunteers are in Australia. “The finalists represent thousands of rugby volunteers in this country who are passionate about our game and the benefits it holds for young boys and girls,” Larratt said. “We were delighted to see so many nominations come in this year from all across the country, as we know each nominee makes such a difference to rugby in Australia.“ The finalists chosen will attend the John Eales Medal night on 27 October 2017, where the winners will be announced. If Lisa wins the award, she will receive a grant of $10,000 to improve the facilities and services of her registered club.

Great start to season for Cranbourne CRANBOURNE BOWLS SATURDAY CRANBOURNE'S top side started the season well, with the rink of skip Doug Boggie and his team of Gavin Wright, Nick Arnold and Roger Roscoe, who were all in sizzling form with a 29 shot victory. Also a great performance from skip Peter Elgar and his rink of John Stanley, Ron Gascoigne, and Barry Thomas who won by 11 shots. Cranbourne’s second side also started the season well with an outstanding performance with skip Gerry Dudink and his team of Vic Butera, Shane Morrison and Chris Griffiths, who won by 13 shots. Back at the club after the game, Chairman of Selectors, Graeme Wood, was very happy with the results. “A pleasing result first up makes the whole club feel good with the promise of a great bowling season ahead of us,” Wood said. All midweek games including ladies pennant were washed out this week. All the Cranbourne results for round 1. Rain causes midweek washout HAMPTON PARK BOWLS HAMPTON Park’s midweek bowlers lined up against Narre Warren (Division 1) and Mentone (Division 3), but after a great start in both games, the weather intervened and both games were called off. Premiership points were shared. Saturday saw the start of another Pennant season, and Division 1 was at home to newly promoted Pakenham. The Parkers won two of the four rinks but not enough for the overall win. Sean McDonald, Chris Hendrie, Steve Barnes and Shane Collins won 18-10, while Geoff Ladner, Peter Hayden, Larry Simpson and Zak Storm won 19-16. Ian Bartlett, Chris Barnes, Clint Mills and Laurie Edwards lost 12-21 and Mark Paton, Neville Hendrie, Shane Hardy and Warwick Hardy lost 13-33. Hampton Park (1) 4-62 lost to Pakenham (1) 14-80. Division 3 travelled to Pakenham to play Cardinia Waters on their tricky carpet. Although they were outplayed for most of the day, teams made late challenges. Jen Sherry, Craig Richards, Blake Edwards and Geoff Ampt came from 13 shots down to lose 1826, Val Moore, Tracey Storm, Ellen Smith and Denise Eastick picked up 7 shots to lose 12-26, Vince Kovacic, Helen Lambert, Jim Westwell and Jos van Hout picked up 6 late shots to lose 1524 while John Wright, Heather Naismith, John Nunan and Ken Cobden went down 16-30. Mixed results for Berwick as pennant underway BERWICK BOWLS SATURDAY ROUND 1 of Saturday Pennant got underway in some of the best conditions for weeks. Berwick had two grass greens and the synthetic available and rolling very nicely for the first hit out of the season, playing host to sides from Montmorency, Burden Park and Glen Waverley. Convertible is in the air By Derek Ogden A CONVERTIBLE has been launched on the back of the Holden Astra range - it comes with the stand-alone name, Cascada and as a single model, priced at $41,990 plus on-road costs. A limited number of 50 special Cascada Launch Edition vehicles were made available to celebrate the return of the convertible body style to the Holden range. Buyers are spoilt with the luxury of premium Nappa leather appointed and ventilated front seats and a leather sports steering wheel. Other special treats include 20-inch alloy wheels, adaptive forward lighting and Bi-Xenon headlamps with LED daytime running lamps. Manufactured in Europe, the new Astra and its Cascada cousin are both designed and engineered at the Opel Russelsheim base in Germany. The Cascada has the classic looks of a four-seater convertible adapted to modern-day use of materials. The sharp front shows off the latest styling in the way the projector headlamps, daytime running lights and front foglamps flank the robust radiator grille, blending into fenders unadorned with unnecessary decoration. The shoulder line shoots uninterrupted in a straight line rearwards to the top of a deep-set boot with enough space for 280 litres of gear with the
roof open, or 380 litres with it closed. The rear is also free of clutter, carrying only the vital information ‘Cascada’ and ‘Turbo’. Up or down, the triple-layer acoustically insulated cloth roof blends in well with the rest of the car. Cascada rolls on 18-inch alloy wheels, with a 17-inch steel spacesaver. Depending on whether it’s glass half full or half empty, the cabin is a four-seater or 2+2. Suffice to say it has more space than most in its class but still isn’t exactly comfortable for adults in the back seats. Perforated leather upholstered front and back seats are supportive in sharp manoeuvres. A heated leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel and alloy pedals add to a feeling of being in a premium sporty Holden. An extensive multi-function display comes up with vehicle information, trip information, fuel economy and warning/messages The MyLink infotainment system incorporates a seven-inch colour screen display, integrated Pandora, Stitcher and TuneIn Radio apps, as well as satellite navigation. Added is DAB digital radio, a single CD player with MP3 capability, handsfree Bluetooth with audio streaming, USB and auxiliary input jack.

The Cascada is a classic example of a four-seater convertible without the premium price. The 1.6-litre four-cylinder turbocharged engine, mated with a sixspeed automatic transmission, is aimed at producing easy driving with some spirit on hand when called upon. Front airbags for driver and front passenger, side impact airbags for driver and front passenger are passive protectors, while ABS anti-lock brakes with brake assist, electronic brakeforce distribution, traction control, hill start assist, plus electronic stability control are active contributors to safety. A rear-view camera and front and rear park assist are also useful when negotiating tight spaces.
On a fine but chilly spring evening, with the roof lowered and air-con heating directed into the foot well, the driver and passengers in the test Cascada were in the perfect position, uninterrupted, to take in the pleasures of a clear night sky. Very impressive. The key to Cascada’s performance potential is its 1.6-litre direct-injection turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing an uninspiring 125 kW of power between 4750 and 6000 rpm, mated with a smooth shifting six-speed automatic transmission. However, it’s the tasty peak torque of 260 Nm between 1650 and 4500 rpm that gives the car its get up and go, quietly at first and under urging to the
tune of a throaty engine note. The sports suspension is up to coping with most conditions found on sealed roads Down Under at legal speeds, while there is minimum body flexing due to the use of high-strength structural materials. Also a bonus from turbo technology is the Cascada’s fuel economy, which on test clocked 6.1 litres per 100 kilometres on the open road and a surprisingly frugal 10.5 litres per 100 kilometres in city and suburb driving. In the back, for some, things can be a bit kneesy-squeazy but not enough to set up a new passenger protest movement. Gone are the days when, at the first sign of rain, it was a matter of pulling up to raise the roof by hand, in the meantime getting a soaking. The Cascada ragtop springs into action at the touch of a centrally located switch, becoming locked in in less than 17 seconds at vehicle speeds up to 50 km/h. Holden Cascada exhibits the exceptional build quality and refinement we expect from European prestige cars, without the premium prices normally associated with the latter. It’s a fair introduction to open-air motoring.
