The Journal thought it only fitting to mark the milestone in its Monday 10 October edition, ahead of jubilee celebrations on Sunday 16 October. Organisers expect 25,000 people at the 150th birthday party which will run from 10am to 4pm and feature food, music, dance, rides and free activities for all ages. Visitors will get a glimpse of the market’s roots through an interactive late 19th-century market scene, complete with colonial-era costumes and props which are perfect for photos. The market partnered with Multicultural Arts Victoria to provide musical entertainment. Acts will include Bindaas Bollywood Dance, fusion ensemble Trident combining North Indian classical music with Western music, and Sol Nation performing a melting pot of reggae, samba, funk, salsa, East Timorese folksong and African dance music. An extra 15 food vendors and food trucks will
join the 200-strong market stall line-up for the jubilee, including Melbourne Paella Company, The Curry Truck, Senor BBQ, Ok-Nomi and the Traditional Lemonade Stand. A teacup ride, chair-o-plane and laughing clowns will bring a fairground vibe and there’ll be ta moko face painting, henna body art, kids’ face painting, an animal farm and more. Dandenong Market general manager Jennifer Hibbs said the market was at the epicentre of Greater Dandenong. “It’s the cultural heartbeat of the region,” she said. “Since the market’s inception in 1866, we have grown from a tiny town of 48 to a buzzing cultural hub of close to 150,000 people.” Today the market welcomes five million people through its doors each year. “The 150th jubilee is not only a significant moment in the history of Melbourne markets, it is also a celebration of the vibrant community that has contributed to the Dandenong Market’s success today,” Ms Hibbs said.

Family and fruit a ripe cocktail By Casey Neill Danny Luppino has been a Dandenong Market fixture for 54 years. And the Italian-born 74-year-old wouldn’t have it any other way. “I love the shop, I love the customers, the market, the council...,” he said. “They’re like family here.” Danny followed his brother to Australia. “My eyes were opening because I was a truck driver in Italy,” he said. “I saw this beautiful country... “I started to work with my brother at South Melbourne Market.” It was open Wednesdays and Fridays. “I looked for another day of work. Dandenong was open on Tuesday,” he said. Soon he was operating a stall on one side of Dandenong Market and his brother covered the other side. “Since then – 1962 – I’ve kept going,” Danny said. “Once they opened Friday here I left South Melbourne and I concentrated here. “Then they opened Saturday here and I left Richmond – I was at Richmond Market on Saturday morning – and I concentrated just on Dandenong. “The last 35 years I’ve been here just in Dandenong.” The market introduced Sunday trading two years ago. “It’s getting better and better. Sunday is becoming one of the best days,” he said. Danny boasts that everyone at the market knows him. “The customers come in and come straight to my shop. I do my best to make the customers happy,” he said. “When we started there was no self-service. We would serve the customer. “The customer wasn’t allowed to touch anything.

“Thirty years ago that changed. “When we started, if the stuff was a little bit damaged you had the chance to sell it. “The new generation, if it’s no good they say ‘eat it yourself ’. “They want to pay less but it’s got to be good.” But one thing hasn’t changed. “You get a good name and the customers come back,” he said. Danny prides himself on providing fresh produce that will last at least a week in the fruit bowl. “When you buy, you buy number one,” he said. “You go for quality, you pay a bit more and you get it back and the customer’s happy.” His brother passed away 10 years ago, but another Luppino is still by Danny’s side. “My son Domenic wants to take over the business,” he said. “He loves this job. “He started here when he was about seven years old. “He was coming with me Saturdays and school holidays. “He loved it and he’s still here.” Domenic is now 44 and, Danny claims, is “taking over now”. “He’s the boss!” Domenic laughed off the claim. “He still calls the shots, don’t you worry about that,” he said. He said the 1am starts did wear him down but he loved “the special people in Dandenong, the variety of different people, really”. “I enjoy serving the customers. It’s all I know,” he said.

Book captures moments in time By Casey Neill A statue unveiling will bring three months of Dandenong Market birthday celebrations to a close. The bronze sculpture by artist Anne Ross will reflect life in the market and will be revealed on Friday 4 November. The market kicked off festivities on 13 September with the launch of the Dandenong Market: Celebrating 150 Years book and the official opening of Rosling Lane, a 20-metre historical mural. The book and the wall - named after early market auctioneer Thomas Rosling - document significant moments in the market’s history using photographs and records. Author Michael Schmith had just six weeks to prepare the 128-page hardcover book to capture the market’s evolution through original photographs and historical records. “The best thing was to come to the market and talk to the people who matter the most, and the people who matter the most in the market are the traders and the customers,” he said. “You see how it works and you see this whole spirit of community which, like its produce, is fresh daily. “It depends on people. It’s not a supermarket. It’s not a shopping mall. “It’s got give and take and a community spirit that’s unquenchable.” Retiring Greater Dandenong councillor and plumber John Kelly was among many people who shared their thoughts on the market with Mr Schmith. He recalled living on Stud Road on the stock route to market. “On Tuesdays my mum would ask me to shut the gate,” he said. “She had great pride in her garden and when she forgot to close that gate the front yard would

But Dandenong Market would always be there, he said. “You must preserve the atmosphere, with everything from bananas and socks for sale. It’s perfect,” he said. The Dandenong Market: Celebrating 150 Years book is available from the Dandenong Market management office for $30.

Family ties are a stock in trade By Casey Neill Mother and son Bella and Adrian Janai have spent a combined 60 years working at Dandenong Market. Bella’s Bargains has been a fixture for the past 35 years, originally as a children’s wear retailer and now stocking clothing for the whole family. “Gather ’round and have a look at our track pants...” Bella shouted during her interview with the Journal. She explained that her brother introduced her to the market through his leathergoods store. “I was here when they had the livestock outside,” Bella said. “I used to enjoy going out and having a look at the sheep. She helped him out for about five years before making her own mark. “I enjoy talking to people and I enjoy being with people,” Bella said. “I’ve seen children growing up. Some are teachers, at uni, being doctors... “They come in and give me a kiss. “It’s nice. “I get flowers from parents sometimes.” Adrian finished VCE and studied accounting for two years before choosing market life. “Someone had to keep an eye on them!” he said. “You meet people along the way. You have regular customers. “We try to provide clothing for the community at a price they can afford.” Adrian has seen the market grow and evolve over the years. Its shoppers had also changed, he said. He said many new migrants were used to shopping at markets in their homeland so they were drawn to Dandenong Market. “It’s been around that long, it should be celebrated,” he said.

Life comes back into great city By Casey Neill Greater Dandenong in an apt name for a municipality that’s getting better and better. From Springvale to Noble Park, Dandenong to Keysborough and Bangholme, the city is transforming in many ways. New businesses are springing up along Bangholme’s Riverend Road - there’s Cornish College, vineyard Craft and Co Farm, training and education facility Nine Dragons Horse Club, and Melbourne Cable Park. The cable park could be open by Christmas and will be home to lakes for water-skiing, wakeboarding, kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding. Spokesman Ian Clark said the River End Business Community would be making a combined $15 million-plus investment and creating about 180 new jobs. Dandenong South is also set for a business boost, with a new bus route to run between Lynbrook Railway Station and Dandenong Railway Station along Abbotts Road from Sunday 13 November. MatchWorks business development manager Maria Ferreira-Correia said the new bus route would help employers to “benefit from some really good candidates”. “What’s stopping them from getting a job is they don’t have a car,” she said. Keysborough South welcomed a new bus route on 28 August, which is serving residents who previously had no public transport access within four kilometres. Residents will soon have a new shopping centre, too, at Hutton and Chapel roads, and a community hub and school are in the pipeline. The State Government delivered money to buy land for the school in the 2016-’17 budget, and Greater Dandenong Council has committed cash and planning resources to the hub project. The council will also chip in $352,000 to develop vacant 1.6 hectare parkland in the Saralands estate, at Stanley Road and Westwood Boulevard. Recreation will also receive a boost in central Keysborough.

The council allocated $3.3 million towards a new pavilion, car park and access road at Tatterson Park, plus $3.26 million for the project from the Federal and State governments. “Next year’s budget there’ll be another allocation for another $3-odd million,” corporate services director Mick Jaensch said. “Those two ovals are MCG-sized football ovals. “They’re really, really well-used yet we don’t have a pavilion to go with it. “I think it will be a real jewel.” The council’s budget also included $8.65 million for the Springvale Civic Precinct, including the Springvale Town Hall redevelopment. “That’s going to receive a really major facelift

which will be really noticeable for the users of the hall,” Mr Jaensch said. That work starts this month, is due for completion next June, and will include new heating and cooling, improved lighting and sound, and a deck. The precinct revitalisation’s $40 million second stage is due for completion in 2020 and will include a library, meeting spaces and outdoor areas. Noble Park will soon say goodbye to the three level crossings that clog up the town centre. started in 2006 and will continue for the next five to 10 years. Key projects include transforming Lonsdale Street into a green, pedestrian-friendly boulevard; creating Halpin Way and Settlers Square to link Dandenong Railway Station with the town’s heart; Dandenong Civic Centre and Harmony Square; the Australian Taxation Office and Government services buildings; Quest Apartments; and Salvation Army regional headquarters. Gary Castricum has either lived or worked in Dandenong for his entire life - almost 60 years. “The city’s been so significantly revitalised,” he said. “We’re seeing so much life coming back to the centre of the city.”

From livestock to market stalls Cattle, pigs and sheep were the items for sale when Dandenong Market officially opened for business on Tuesday 10 October 1866. An informal market sprung up on the pavements around the stockyards shortly after, where farmers sold surplus produce and second-hand items. The market took place fortnightly at first but soon became a weekly event. By 1870 up to 300 vendors and buyers attended the market for livestock, fruit, dairy products, skins, lard, honey, hay and other farm produce. Farmers from throughout the La Trobe Valley and Gippsland travelled to Dandenong to buy and sell. In 1926 the market started the move to the site it calls home today. It officially opened at Clow and Cleeland streets on 4 October 1927. The produce hall was on the Clow Street corner and the stock market sale ring and yards extended up Cleeland Street. During World War II the market provided vital food supplies from local farms and factories for the war effort. From June 1940, all produce sections and the showgrounds grandstand had been converted
Dandenong Market in 1924. into sleeping quarters for more than 1000 recruits. Following almost 90 years of continual arguments and discussions, the stock market was re-
moved from the heart of Dandenong in 1958 and into a purpose-built site on Cheltenham Road, behind the Dandenong rail yards.
It hosted its first cattle sale in January 1958 and by October 1959 all the livestock was removed from the market. In 1975, the market’s old produce hall was demolished and new brick produce and fruit halls were built further along Cleeland Street. The council wanted to retain the rural atmosphere and European market style so retained an open air section and used the slogan ‘City shopping with a country atmosphere’ to encourage shoppers. The following December, Dandenong City Council started a six-month trial opening the market on Fridays in addition to Tuesdays to boost revenue. It was successful and Saturday trading was added in 1982. Dandenong promoted itself as The Market Town. Sunday trading started on 6 October 2013. Today, Dandenong Market features more than 200 traders spread over 8000-plus square metres. It brings together 150 different nationalities under one roof and sells fresh local produce, meat, vegetables, cheeses and spices.

Off-the-cuff arrest By Casey Neill Noble Park man Aaron Yates earned an official police thank-you for helping with an arrest. The 30-year-old received a Letter of Appreciation at the Victoria Police Southern Metro Region Division Three award ceremony at Dandenong Civic Centre on Tuesday 4 October. It recognised his “outstanding assistance and contribution in apprehending a violent and aggressive offender at Dandenong on 8 September 2016”. “Your quick action prevented further injury not occurring to both police officers and resulted in a successful resolution to what could have potentially been a more dangerous situation,” the citation said. Mr Yates said he was driving home on a Thursday night and on Stud Road saw that a police unit had pulled over a driver. “As I got close to the rear of the vehicle I saw the two officers struggled with a man on the ground,” he said. His instincts as a security guard kicked in. He performed a U-turn and asked if they needed a hand. “They said yes,” he said. “The rest is history.” Mr Yates said he helped to retrain the man. “He was being very violent towards the police officers,” he said. “I just assisted the officers to physically restrain him until they got more units down there. “Once they had more resources come they both said thank-you to me.” He never second-guessed making the offer to help. “I’m always out to help people,” he said. “I’ve been doing security for the past 13 years. I’m also a volunteer firefighter over at Noble Park.” He also works for a towing company in Dandenong South and regularly attends car crash scenes alongside police. Mr Yates said he was very honoured to receive the Letter of Appreciation. “At the end of the day, I’ll go and help anyone at any time of day,” he said. “To be honoured ... I just can’t put words to it.” In addition to the letter, Division Three Commander Inspector Paul Hollowood presented Divisional Commendations to four individuals and a group. Senior Constable Jay Allen received her com-
Aaron Yates with his Letter of Appreciation. 160026 mendation for “expressing sincere compassion and genuine concern for a victim of prolonged family violence” in Narre Warren on 13 June. “You showed professionalism and an excellent work ethic by providing safety to the victim and her young child, whilst charging the perpetrator with over 50 serious offences,” the citation read. He also awarded police from across Greater Dandenong, Casey and Cardinia National Medals, National Police Service Medals, Victoria Police Service Medals and several service clasps. Sergeant Chris Marlow received a 40-year clasp and Sergeant Kenneth Martin a 35-year clasp. Assistant Commissioner Robert Hill said the day was an important one for Victoria Police.

He said he was pleased to see so many partners and children in the room. “I am heartened to see friends and family present here today; your loved ones who support you so well in performing your role,” he said. Mr Hill said police in the south-east were experiencing challenges consistent with other growth corridors across the state. “That being said, we cannot lose sight of the great work our police do in keeping the community safe,” he said. “We’re meeting those challenges and demands head-on.”
He said the recently released crime statistics did provide some insight. “We must also be cognisant of the fact that crime data also reflects the good work of our people,” he said. “It includes detected crime relating to family violence interventions and drug-related crime.” Mr Hill urged the police present to be proud of the fact they were members of Victoria Police and based in the Southern Metro Region. “We are seen as leaders in delivering effective police service. Taskforce Tense and Operation Regarder are just two examples,” he said. “Please continue doing what you’re doing.” “That’s what will deliver a safer Victoria.” See pages 2 and 3 for more award winners.

By Casey Neill Nabbing more than 400 criminals in 15 months earned Sergeant Hafiz Mayar and his team a Divisional Commendation. The Greater Dandenong Response and Tasking Unit received the honour at the Victoria Police Southern Metro Region Division Three award ceremony at Dandenong Civic Centre on Tuesday 4 October. “A lot of youths were congregating in the library square, there were a few fights happening between different groups,” Sgt Mayar said. “Our unit was created to restore some public order in the area. “I was given three members. “We liaised with Greater Dandenong Council, Dandenong Plaza security and management and other stakeholders. “We identified the hot spots. By patrolling the hot spots we picked up offenders.” They picked up more than 400 between 9 March last year and 12 June this year on drugs, weapons, drunkenness and warrant offences, averaging more than two each day. “On one occasion we arrested a guy with $50,000 worth of ice in his underpants,” Sgt Mayar said. “On another occasion our unit arrested another guy carrying $200,000 of marijuana - 11 kilograms.” They also helped Thomas Street traders, in particular, to beef up security and stop a spate of break-ins. “We also targeted by patrolling the area. We arrested two of the burglars that were responsible,” he said. Sgt Mayar had three members at any given time, but 18 officers rotated through the unit. “The unit has now been absorbed. It’s become part of the Frontline Tactical Unit,” he said. The group commendation recipients included Sergeant Leigh Mackey, Acting Sergeant James

Online plea to pay for boy’s funeral Friends and family of a four-year-old boy who died in a house fire are rallying around to raise money for his funeral. Their GoFundMe page tells how the boy’s grandfather searched the Ann Street house in vain before he was driven out by smoke from the blaze. Firefighters later found the boy’s body in his mother’s bedroom. Emergency services were called to the townhouse just before 8am on Saturday 1 October. An Ambulance Victoria spokesman said paramedics took five people to Dandenong Hospital in a stable condition, four with smoke inhalation and one with a leg injury. Candidate hit by racism By Casey Neill A Greater Dandenong Council candidate has been told to “go back to your s***** country” in a shocking text message. Gagandeep Singh, 29, will vie for one of three seats in Lightwood Ward at the Saturday 22 October local government election. At 7.46pm on Tuesday 4 October, the Indianborn Australian citizen received a racist message from an anonymous texter. “Why are you standing in the local council election, you should go back to your country, India,” it started. “The country with population of 1.4 billion, a dirty, s***** over-polluted country, the country that has more than 800 million Indians living below the poverty line.” Mr Singh was very shocked and replied to the message with “thanks”.
“I was very devastated and shocked that’s what people are thinking about Indians,” he said. Riddled with spelling and grammatical errors, the message went on to say that and hundreds of millions of Indians defecated anywhere they could find because of lack of sanitations and public toilets. “That’s one of the reason that too many dirty and primitive Indians keep coming to Australia,” it said. “And soon Australia will become as s***** country as India. “Why don’t you go back to your s***** country and make it as beautiful as Australia.” The text said Mr Singh might get some votes from his fellow Indians living in “the ghetto called Little India”. “You look like ISIS TERRORISTS,” it concluded. Mr Singh, who came to Australia more than six years ago, said the message didn’t make him

A short film has been released about a Dandenong man who narrowly survived, learned how to walk again and resumed his promising soccer career after an horrific machete attack at a Sudanese beauty pageant in 2011. Offside re-enacts the events when Nelly Yoa’s “dream” was nearly taken away. Party stabbing appeal A Berwick man received life-threatening stab wounds following a Noble Park party. The 24-year-old entered an altercation with two men on Ian Street about 5am on Saturday 1 October, after leaving the nearby event. After he received seven stab wounds to his abdomen and arms he contacted friends, who drove him to Dandenong Hospital in a serious but non-life threatening condition.

Cash and smokes hold-up A thief pointed a small, brown handgun at a milk bar attendant during a hold-up in Noble Park. He entered the Noble Street store just before 8am on Saturday 1 October wearing a blackhooded jumper, sunglasses and a scarf over his face. The thief pointed the gun at the victim, demanded cash and cigarettes, and fled with $90 and 20 packets of cigarettes. He was last seen travelling south along Corrigan Road in a white four-wheel drive.

Swapping fines for treatment has transformed lives and earned two police officers Divisional Commendations. The Dandenong-based Alcohol Diversion Program has engaged 39 people, accounted for $600,000 in unpaid fines and cut drunk and disorderly offences by about 30 per cent. It will be showcased as a crime prevention tool in Amsterdam next month. Spearheads Senior Sergeant Frank Bodor and Senior Constable Elyse Mason were honoured for their efforts at the Victoria Police Southern Metro Region Division Three award ceremony at Dandenong Civic Centre on Tuesday 4 October. “It’s outside the normal policing methods and it gives us another tool to be able to provide options for the people that we’re dealing with,” Sen Sgt Bodor said. “It was actually my thought bubble from the beginning. “It started two and a half years ago when I was on the road at Dandenong and we experienced the same clients for offences of drunk and drunk and disorderly basically coming through the door on a rotational basis. “We had no other alternative or options available to us other than infringement notices. “We really weren’t addressing the issue at hand - it’s more of a health issue than it is a criminal issue, from our perspective, for a lot of these people.” The program is voluntary. “We would introduce the program to the client. If they elected to participate, they would sign an agreement,” Sen Sgt Bodor said. The officer contacts the Sheriff ’s department to identify outstanding fines and has those warrants listed at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court. “They would be assessed by the treatment providers and have a treatment program modelled to their needs,” he said. “That turnaround is generally in one to two days. It’s rapid access into those treatment programs.” A return court date is set, where the treatment provider details the client’s progress. “The magistrate would determine how long

Dad drives on depression message A Dandenong-based businessman’s campaign to honour his late son and raise awareness about depression will be haring around the Mount Panorama circuit at the Bathurst 1000 motor-racing meet on 7-9 October. Craig Membrey, who owns Membrey’s Transport and Crane Hire, has toured his Kenworth T904 showtruck with a powerful mural of his son Rowan nationally over the past five years. The truck has been a regular feature at the Berwick Show in recent years. The cause will again be featured on a 2014 Porsche 991 with a huge rear-wing spoiler and Beyondblue in the Carrera Cup this weekend. It will be promoted to Beyondblue’s 1.6 million Facebook followers, Mr Membrey said. Dandenong driver held over death South Australian police charged a Dandenong man over an eight-year-old girl’s death in a Barossa Valley car crash. Shujaat Bahrami, 40, was behind the wheel of a Hyundai SUV that collided head-on with a Mitsubishi Pajero four-wheel drive at Stockwell, just before 4pm on Sunday 2 October. An 8-year-old Kilburn girl was in the Hyundai’s back seat and died at the scene. The Hyundai’s other passengers, a 28-year-old woman from Kilburn and two girls aged 16 and

A disqualified driver with two suspended sentences hanging over his head has been jailed for three months after drunkenly reversing his friend’s car from the middle of a residential street. Elia Pakwan, of Eumemmerring, blew 0.26 - more than five times the legal blood-alcohol limit - shortly after police watched him drive six metres on course to hit another parked vehicle on McNabb Court, Dandenong North, on 14 December 2014, a court heard. At the time, Pakwan had been recently disqualified from driving for four years, and was subject to suspended jail terms - eight months for recklessly causing injury and three months for an early count of disqualified driving. He conceded to police that he had drank three beers but had only sought to move his drunken friend’s car from the middle of the street. Prior to his Dandenong Magistrates’ Court hearing on 3 October, Pakwan had allegedly failed to appear at court three times over the matter. Pakwan’s lawyer argued there were exceptional circumstances to justify not invoking the suspended sentence, such as no further offending since late 2014. The accused - who had a lengthy
history of drink-driving - had made “significant strides” in curbing his alcohol and cannabis abuse through the help of family and church members, the lawyer said. “He stopped using cannabis a year ago and never drinks to excess. “He was previously drinking large amounts of spirits and beer on a daily basis.” Pakwan was also due to become a father in five months, the court heard. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said there were exceptional circumstances only for the eightmonth suspended jail term for recklessly causing injury. Mr Vandersteen took into account the nature of the offending, Pakwan’s lack of recent offending, remission from drugs and alcohol, stable accommodation and his impending fatherhood. An eight-month jail term would be disproportionate but not a three-month term, Mr Vandersteen said. “You’ve taken very positive steps. It’s a pity you didn’t bring (the matter) to court earlier. Maybe you weren’t as stable as it was put to me.” Pakwan will be released from prison before Christmas and the expected birth of his child. His driver’s licence was cancelled for a further four years.

The Medal of the Order of Australia recipient was thrilled with the recognition.
Driver behaviour and not a dodgy light sequence are to blame for red light camera fines at a Keysborough intersection, according to the Road Safety Camera Commissioner. John Voyage responded to a request for comment from the Journal after its 23 September story about Springvale and Cheltenham roads had already appeared. Lighthouse Christian Church and College senior minister and president Richard Warner called for one extra second on the right turn green light, and urged other victims of the red light camera to join him in challenging the “revenue-raiser”. But Mr Voyage said his predecessor Gordon Lewis investigated the camera and found it operating correctly. In his report, Mr Lewis concluded that “the primary reason for the infringements that I viewed was driver impatience upon seeing the yellow arrow”. “Some motorists treated the yellow arrow as an extension of the green, and were ultimately detected entering the intersection against the red arrow,” he said. Mr Voyage said there were myths about the camera “which Mr Warner has repeated”. “The light sequence was not re-calibrated in the fashion he describes ‘about two or three years ago’,” he said. “I am informed that the sequence is unchanged since 28 May 2007.” He said a red light infringement was only issued because a driver entered an intersection after the light had turned red. “Some people seem to misunderstand this, and incorrectly think that being in the intersection after the light turns red is an offence,” he said. Hate won’t stop Muslim forum By Cam Lucadou-Wells An organiser says a stream of hate mail will not deter a region-first forum to combat Islamophobia in Dandenong this month. Casey-based teacher Inaz Janif said she organised the forum, The Right to Remain Muslim, due to several reports of young Muslim women being assaulted in public. Among the victims was a woman whose hijab was snatched off her head by a male in a Hallam supermarket. Ms Janif was also aware of a group of girls wearing hijabs who were shoved into a wall by an attacker in a Melbourne shopping centre and another nearly forced off the road by a hate-speaking fellow driver. “These are people who I know and care about. Should these girls lose their lives over this?” Ms Janif said after initial reluctance by police to prosecute the supermarket attacker, he was handed a 12-month good-behaviour bond. However, she said many victims - vulnerable, young and from refugee backgrounds - were not comfortable reporting such attacks. “That’s why it’s so disturbing to see people in the national political sphere giving oxygen to people who say Muslims are not welcome.
“It’s one thing to verbally attack people, another thing to put our hands on other people.” Posts on a south-east based Facebook page that incited violence against Muslims and mosques was also disturbing, Ms Janif said. She requested the date and place of this month’s forum not be publicised due to “hate mail” she’s already received as well as security concerns by police. Ms Janif said the forum was a first of its kind in the south-east. It was designed to promote understanding of “racism, bigotry and Islamophobia”, and to make young people resilient and stronger against antiIslam sentiment. “We need to highlight the importance of reporting these crimes and knowing it’s not OK. By staying silent, it is giving the message that it’s OK. “People have been quiet for so long, and this is trying to open the discussion.” Speakers at the forum include Monique Toohey on being resilient to racism, Yassir Morsi on understanding Islamophobia and Mohamud Hersi. It is supported by Project Mosaic funding from the Islamic Council of Victoria, and supported by Casey Against Racism and Islamophobia Watch Australia.

Sewing skills are stitch in time By Casey Neill Sewing skills are giving migrant women a leg up in their new homeland. But Springvale’s Twich Women’s Sewing Collective is about more than just skills. “Twich is an organisation which supports women by coming together, socialising, learning an activity they’re interested in, and maybe making a business idea out of it in the future,“ Nyachuol John from Twich said. The group is welcoming new students to sign up to study a Certificate III in Clothing Production. The part-time course takes 18 months to complete. Twich founder Abuk Bol explained that this made it more appealing to mums with limited time. An RMIT teacher hosts classes at the store from 10.30am to 3pm two days a week. Ms John was thrilled to attend a graduation ceremony for the first three women to complete the course last month. “I was so proud. It’s a milestone for Twich,“ she said. The students were all from different cultural backgrounds. “We’re looking for everyone to come and do the certificate,“ she said. “This year looking for 10 people, this place is much bigger.“ Ms John was referring to Twich’s relocation from Walker Street, Dandenong, to Lightwood Road, Springvale, in February. The other store was initially rent-free, and when the fees kicked in, the group couldn’t afford to stay. “It was really hard to find a place,“ Ms John said. “We thought since it was opposite the station, we’d have traffic. “We want to see if we can attract new customers.“ The store stocks bags, placemats, table runners and cushion covers, and makes clothing to order. Ms John got involved with Twich through vol-

I’ve learned a lot,“ she said. “We need more volunteers.“

Ms Bol couldn’t speak English when she arrived in Australia 12 years ago. She fled Sudan with her husband and children in 2004. “Back home I knew how to knit and how to sew,” she said. “When I came here, I tried to look for a job in what I know. But I didn’t have a certificate.” Ms Bol studied and got a job in the textiles industry, but found it hard to fit into the workplace. She led a small group from the Twich com-
munity of South Sudan to establish the Twich Women’s Sewing Collective. Last year she received an Encouragement Award in the Greater Dandenong Australia Day Awards’ Corporate Citizen of the Year category. “Abuk demonstrates the qualities of perseverance, determination, innovation and resilience in the way she now assists others to enrich their own lives,” the awards judges said. Both feet go in By Casey Neill Yarraman Oaks Primary holds an Australian record. The Noble Park school launched a month-long health focus at its Walktober Fun Fest on Wednesday 5 October. At 4pm, everyone limbered up to hokey pokey with the Australian record for the largest group of people performing the dance in their sights. “Unfortunately the week before a school with 1800 kids did it,” the school’s student wellbeing co-ordinator Elissa Sewell said. “But we had 220 people doing the hokey pokey and set the record for the most number of people performing the largest circle dance simultaneously. “We’ve got a gold-plated certificate. “They were all stoked. “It was lots of fun. It was great to see the children and their parents interacting and all joining in.” Police officers and mascots from Cricket Vic-
toria, YMCA and Fotheringham Reserve joined in. “It’s just the start of our month-load of celebrations,” Ms Sewell said. “We’re trying to increase activity and healthy living.” From lunchtime walks to Tuesday tennis, yoga afternoons, belly dancing and pedometers tracking steps, October will certainly be active at Yarraman Oaks. “Kids are coming up to me and saying ‘I’ve done 8000 steps today already’ or ‘we’ve been jumping in class’,” she said. Even toddler and a father - despite being dressed in jeans - gave yoga a go. “That’s the best part - the community were all getting in the spirit,” Ms Sewell said. The school will present prizes to the students who complete the most steps each week. “At the end we’ll find out how far we’ve gone in quest to go around Australia,” Ms Sewell said. “We need to reach 33 million steps by Cup Day.”

On the route to success By Casey Neill A new bus service could cut unemployment and boost business in Dandenong South. Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams announced the route 890 would run between Lynbrook Railway Station and Dandenong Railway Station and take in Abbotts Road in Dandenong South. She said it would start on Sunday 13 November and “help get people to where the jobs are and also helps businesses to secure the skilled workforce they need”. “Lack of public transport connections can be a major obstacle to employment,” she said. “This is all about jobs and creating opportunities.” Every day MatchWorks business development manager Maria Ferreira-Correia works with jobseekers who don’t have cars. “Dandenong has one of the highest unemployment rates,” she said. “Seventy to 80 per cent of our candidates don’t have transport. “When you become unemployed, that’s one of the first things to go as they’re quite expensive to run.” Ms Ferreira Correia said the new bus route would help employers to “benefit from some really good candidates”. “What’s stopping them from getting a job is they don’t have a car,” she said. “There are jobs out there. “The route that the new bus is going to go through, there’s heaps of places there that we could potentially tap into for our candidates. “I think it will be really beneficial for the south-east and especially for the unemployed in this area. “We need another one now, for the Greens Road side.” South East Local Learning and Employment

Committee for Dandenong chairman Gary Castricum said it was about time. “It runs right through the centre of where there’s a lot of industry,” he said. “I think it’s desperately needed. “It’s going to open up more opportunities for him to employ people. “It is such a major employment and industrial
area that provides such a significant benefit to everywhere.” Mr Castricum said reaching the precinct without a car would previously mean an eight kilometre walk. “A lot of people need unskilled and semiskilled work, and this is where a lot of that work is,” he said. “A lot of these workers don’t have a car.” The new service forms part of the State Government’s Better Bus Networks program, which includes four new routes and 13 realignments to Cranbourne’s bus network. Timetables for the new network will be available on ptv.vic.gov.au from Monday 17 October.

THE LIFE OF THE CITY By CASEY NEILL Gary Castricum has either lived or worked in Dandenong for his entire life – almost 60 years. “Between my mother and my wife, I’ve shopped at Dandenong Market for all of my life,” he said. “My mother always shopped there on a Tuesday and now my wife shops there on Tuesdays. “I’ve only ever eaten for all of my life fresh produce from Dandenong Market. “It’s a terrific place to shop for fresh goods. “It’s an exciting place because of the cultural mix. “I like just walking around there. You feel like you’re anywhere in the world. “The market is a real attraction I think, to the city.” Mr Castricum lives in Berwick but travels to Dandenong to eat out, from Afghani to Indian, Asian and more. “That’s where I prefer to go. It’s ridiculously cheap as well,” he said. “It has great cafes so when I meet people these days, I meet them in Dandenong. “When they come along they go ‘wow!’.” He lists Young Uncles, Ginger Jones, Beletti and Melissa’s among his favourite meeting points.

OFFICER OPENS UP The once sleepy suburb of Officer is being transformed into a vibrant, commercial and residential hub attracting first, second and third home buyers who are looking for their slice of real estate heaven. Candidates make their pitch The Journal contacted all candidates who nominated for a Greater Dandenong Council seat ahead of the Saturday 22 October local government elections. We asked them three questions: 1. What is your association with Greater Dandenong? 2. Are you aligned or involved in any political groups? 3. What is the biggest issue facing Greater Dandenong and how would you tackle it? Here are the responses we received, in ballot paper order. LIGHTWOOD WARD - Springvale, Springvale South (Three vacancies) Dang Quach - No response. Youhorn Chea - No response. Loi Truong - No response. Gagandeep Singh 1. No response. 2. I am not member for any political party. 3. Local business is suffering a lot because of paid parking. If I get elected I am going to try my best to remove paid parking and support local businesses. Nathan Niven 1. I have lived in Springvale South for over 10 years and my two children attend school locally. 2. I am a member of the ALP. 3. The biggest issue is the parking meters in the Springvale central activity district. If elected to council I will fight to have the parking meters removed and will work with other councillors who are committed to
achieving the same outcome. Further I will vote against any proposals to install parking meters in other shopping precincts within Greater Dandenong. Sean O’Reilly 1. I reside in Springvale. I have served as councillor for four years. I served as mayor in 2015. I am president and have served on the Springvale Rise Primary School Council for eight years. 2. I am a member of the ALP but funded independently. 3. More resources to manage traffic and parking. More infrastructure with low rate increases. Linda Pompeia 1. I am a local resident who has lived in the City of Opportunity, Greater Dandenong, for 30 years and who actively attends the Dandenong Council meetings. 2. No. 3. Unemployment is the biggest issue facing Greater Dandenong. The City of Greater Dandenong is the most disadvantaged municipality in Victoria. We need additional resourcing to assist with the coordination of local services; increase in support for organisations providing material aid; increase in funding and resources to support volunteer agencies/volunteer engagement; and reinstatement of funding for translation and interpreting services for financial and emergency relief agencies. PAPERBARK WARD - Noble Park (Three vacancies) Tim Dark 1. I live in Keysborough and have for many years! I
am also a volunteer firefighter with Keysborough Fire Brigade. 2. I am an independent candidate however I am a proud Liberal. 3. There are multiple issues facing my ward, however I would say that crime and hooning have been two of the biggest concerns that I have been informed by residents when I have been out doorknocking and in the community. Peter Brown 1. I have represented Noble Park, Keysborough and Springvale South as a councillor for 20 years and taught in Springvale South for 14 years. 2. I have been a Labor supporter all my life, but I do plead guilty to liking Malcolm Turnbull. 3. The impact of the Skyrail on Noble Park will be massive. Council must work with the Level Crossing Removal Authority to get the best result possible. I personally and deeply regret the loss of the trees, however. Ermine Gok - No response. Alam Bhuiyan 1. I have lived within the Greater Dandenong area for more than 25 years and raised my family here. This is my home. 2. No! I am not a member of any political party and I have not been endorsed by any organisation and have never sought endorsement. 3. The steep increase in serious crime in Greater Dandenong is the biggest serious issue. Crime in Keysborough is up 11 per cent, Springvale South up 19.8 per cent, and Dandenong, up 28.2 per cent. Thefts of, and from, cars are up by 42 per cent. Stalking, harassment

and threatening behaviour offences associated with family violence are up by 64.4 per cent. A 53.3 per cent increase in dangerous and negligent acts endangering people, mostly associated with hoon drivers. These issues can, and will, be tackled. Sajjad Shamsi 1. No response. 2. I am not with any party or any group. 3. I am teacher and trainer for Vocational Education and Training. At the moment our youth and children need attention. Youth need a pathway and the right consultation for their career direction and to get in jobs as soon as possible, and children need encouragement to achievement their goals and provide help for them in this regards. We need to get more active to teach them English (for non-English backgrounds) and Australian culture for immigrant people, so they can understand and mix with the others communities. Local councillors need to visit local schools often if they need any help to uplift their school’s ranking. Sophie Tan - No response. Brad Woodford 1. I spend a great deal of my time in Greater Dandenong. I have been a Noble Park resident for about nine years. I also work for the Ventura Bus Company in Dandenong. I do additional work on a part-time basis working in youth services within greater Dandenong and Casey, primarily working with young people living in supported/out of home care. Much of what I do every day involves me being in Greater Dandenong.

2. I have no membership or involvement in any political groups. 3. One of the most immediate issues is to tackle disengagement among some young people, particularly in cultural minority groups. I want to actively engage with local police, community service workers and members of various cultural groups to tackle these issues head-on. It troubles me that young people, often from good families, are still somehow heading down the road towards crime and drugs. I want to work hard to ensure young people in Greater Dandenong remain engaged with the local community, with school and training, and ultimately to know that they can aspire to be anything they want to be regardless of their ethnic background or religious beliefs. Minh Van Tran 1. I have enjoyed over 10 years of community work including the SICMAA and Hoa Nghiem Buddhist Temple tax help volunteer program, helping many low income earners with their tax issues. I have also worked as a volunteer with SEMVAC to assist disadvantaged people to complete forms or apply for services; contact with ATO or Centrelink. I am also an active member of the Rotary Club. I have been also involved in fundraising program for Royal Children Hospital Research and volunteering for Clean Up Australia Day. 2. I have been a member of ALP. 3. I’m a resident who has lived and work in this multicultural community for over 20 years, with my experiences as a councillor and mayor, a local lawyer for the last eight years and had 10 years working as a broadcaster for a national multilingual station, as well as advisor to many community organisations. 2. I have worked and still volunteer in Dandenong, Springvale and Keysborough. I attend St Columba’s Uniting Church, Noble Park. I’m your voice on two large hospital community action committees, planning for now and our future in healthcare, working on closing gaps for those diverse in our community. I serve on the council’s disability action group. I volunteer with YRIPP for youth in our justice system, and an ITP for different ages with a cognitive disability, involved with Uniting AgeWell, Committee for Disability SouthEast, and an advocate for families youth business consumers and those from different nationalities. 2. No. 3. I will give residents and businesses a voice on council and get employment opportunities. We need to lobby the State Government for services. We need new schools, public transport, more police, safety/ lighting and bored youth, colleges and accommodation, drugs, not losing our major shops, parking in the main streets, stable rates, rubbish, roads, footpaths maintained and keeping open spaces. We also need to look after our older and disabled residents. Jim Memeti 1. Councillor since 2005, Mayor 2010-2014. I migrated to Australia in 1975, aged two and have lived in Dandenong for 41 years. I am currently a member of the Lions Club of Greater Dandenong, Greater Dandenong Neighbourhood Watch and the Greater Dandenong Environment Group. I am also on the Dandenong West Primary School council and a current Councillor for the City of Greater Dandenong, having been elected in 2012. 2. I am endorsed by the Greens. 3. The biggest issue facing Greater Dandenong is rapid population growth without infrastructure like schools, public transport and community facilities keeping up. I have been working hard to make sure it is built as quickly as possible. I was a key driver to start planning for a Dandenong Community Hub and a Keysborough South Community Hub. If re-elected I want to make sure these facilities are built as quickly as possible, and that they cater for the whole community. Some of the biggest infrastructure needs in our area are not council-controlled but the responsibility of State Government. If re-elected, I plan to continue to lobby to ensure the primary school is urgently built in Keysborough South, to continue to push for a secondary school and for better and more frequent bus services to the area. In Dandenong, the State Government needs to plan a major upgrade of Dandenong Railway Station. Murugan Nagarajan 1. Living here since 1999. 2. Just member - Labor. 3. Community services, safety and development. Invest ratepayers’ money wisely, promoting efficient council services, strong economic development by working with state and federal governments to get Dandenong a fair share. Angela Long 1. I am a councillor and have lived within the city for nearly all my life. 2. Member of the Australian Labor Party. 3. I believe that there is more than one issue that we face in Greater Dandenong. I would work with local industries to encourage them to employ local people. I will lobby the State Government to build a P-12 school in the area. On a lack of a community hub in Keysborough South, I will work to make sure that one is built. Lidia Paul 1. I have lived in Greater Dandenong throughout my entire life and currently reside in Dandenong with my husband and our four children. I have taught mathematics, physics, chemistry and science at various schools including Killester College, Nazareth College, St John’s Regional College, Dandenong High School. I have managed my own migration company since 2009 in Keysborough. I am currently the president of Lions Club of Dandenong City. I have been involved in the packaging and delivery of food hampers to Cornerstone, Hannover, Bob’s Place, Dandenong High School, Tom Houlahan Centre, Anglicare, Springvale Benevolent Society, and ASRC. During the last seven years I have organised free dinner meals for Cornerstone and Hanover for local homeless and disadvan-

taged people. For the last 10 years I have planted trees at Tatterson Park, Tirhatuan Park, Greaves Reserve and Falkiner Reserve. 2. I am a Labor Party member. 3. Roads, rubbish, public transport, parking spaces and rates are the biggest issues. Parking spaces around stations and shopping centres have always been a big concern for locals this needs to be improved by providing more spaces, longer parking times and better security. Private investment in Dandenong needs to be further encouraged to increase local employment opportunities. David Daniel Ball 1. I’ve lived in the Red Gum Ward of Greater Dandenong ever since I failed as a whistle-blower over a child’s death from school neglect and lost everything. I’m a math school teacher by trade. 2. I am not a member of any political party, but I am a member of the Institute of Public Affairs (IPA) but not a representative of theirs. I am an economic conservative with Libertarian leanings. 3. Business costs are too high in Greater Dandenong, meaning that youth unemployment is too high. If council can rein in costs and focus on essential services and cut red tape on business, everyone profits. Minwen Wu 1. I’ve been living in City of Greater Dandenong since shortly after I came to Australia in 2002 from Shanghai, China, including two years in Springvale and the past 10 years in Dandenong. My two daughters were born in Dandenong and they’ve been attending local childcare, kindergarten and primary school all along. I had worked for some years in Dandenong South factories and in recent years I run my own business consultancy from our home in Dandenong West. I have been a school council member for nearly five years, firstly with Dandenong West Primary School and subsequently with Dandenong North Primary School. 2. I joined the Labor Party 15 months ago, but I’m firm that community interest comes first before any politics. 3. I believe it is economy and employment. Greater Dandenong currently has an unemployment rate of 25 per cent or so, which is three times the national average. With such high unemployment, social cohesion, law and order and residents’ mental health are all in jeopardy. The new council must take strong leadership to make Greater Dandenong really prosperous and booming, and then social harmony and safety will all fall into place. This is achievable. I was born and raised in the City of Greater Dandenong. My wife and I both went to Nazareth College and we live in the Silverleaf Ward of Outlook Drive. As a person who is starting a family in Dandenong North I believe it is our responsibility as a community to ensure Dandenong is as good for my children while they grow up as it was for me. 2. I come from a long family affiliation with the Labor Party but I myself am not a member as of yet. I believe local council is strictly for local issues and political parties should have little to no involvement in local council. 3. I believe one of Dandenong’s biggest issues at the moment is youth crime. With gangs such as Apex originating in Dandenong North I believe local council has an important role to play in preventing and fighting against this kind of outlaw behaviour. Community safety is the biggest issue I observe in Greater Dandenong. It’s a complex issue that I believe requires the participation of many groups to resolve. Dandenong Park will host a fun festival with health and well-being at its heart. Spring Into Wellness will mark both Mental Health Week and Carers Week with an animal farm, jumping castle, musicians, performers, art and craft activities, community service organisation stalls, and more. Mental health support service Ermha is presenting the free community event with South East Metropolitan Primary Health Network (SEMPHN) and Mind Australia. Bernard Robinson has been chipping in ideas and handing out posters, and will volunteer on the day. “I’ve been with Ermha for six years in different programs,“ he said. “For the last year, I’ve been a volunteer and it’s been really instrumental in my recovery.“ Mr Robinson said the event was a fun way to let the community know what support was available. “I know for myself it took me a long time to
accept that I had a mental illness because of the embarrassment and shame and all that,“ he said. “Until you take that first step and accept that you do have a mental illness, well you don’t really begin the road to recovery.“ Ermha’s Shamus Goble said the event would be fun, despite its serious message. “I’m looking forward to seeing how the members of the community interact with this event,“ he said. “Doing things for our general physical and mental well-being are important and to some degree provide, potentially, some protection against mental or physical illness.“ Mr Goble said the event was unique in that it would celebrate Mental Health Week and Carers Week simultaneously, and was taking place on a weekend. “There’s a lot of support services that aren’t usually available on weekends,“ he said. By Nick Creely Passion, pride, resilience and determination are the core fundamentals of a successful and thriving football club. For the Noble Park Bulls, these four key ingredients are what make them such a proud club. For 32 long and agonising years, the Under 19s have been devoid of success - and finally they broke through spectacularly, claiming a gritty premiership against all odds. This feat was one of many stories to come out of the Peter Reece Medal awards night at Club Noble on Thursday 29 September. From their star midfielder Kyle Martin, who claimed yet another Peter Reece Medal, the retirements of club legends Stewart Kemperman and Craig Anderson, the touching tribute to club great Chris ‘Rabbit’ Heenan who passed away recently and the recognition of new life members, it was a night of celebration, pride and emotion for the blue and gold. The club has endured some tough years and have struggled to win premierships, but the energy, passion and overall love for the club was plain to see. Peter Reece Medal STAR midfielder Kyle Martin has yet again claimed the club Best and Fairest award, winning by 18 votes. The 26-year-old, who played six AFL games for Collingwood, is no stranger to individual accolades. He has not only won countless best and fairest awards at Noble Park, but he has also done so for Frankston in the VFL and for Collingwood’s VFL side. Martin first won the Peter Reece Medal back in 2009, at the age of 19, a remarkable achievement which raised the eyebrows of several recruiters. Now back at the club he grew up loving, the

Rabbit’s journey marked by emotion from friends By Nicholas Creely Noble Park is saddened by the passing of ex-player and champion of the club Chris ‘Rabbit’ Heenan, 47, on 23 September, but the club honoured him in the best possible way with a touching tribute and a minute of silence at the club’s presentation night. Kellie Walden delivered a moving speech to the packed audience, talking about the journey of life and never taking things for granted. “Life is like one long continuous journey, and from the moment we get on board the train, we know we must depart. “We stop at many stations along the way, and sit and watch as different people enter our journey. “Many of these people sit on different carriages and we will never know them. “Others will sit on the same carriage but keep their distance. “A small percentage will sit next to us. “These are the passengers that bring great joy, and show us love, honesty and understanding. “We will treasure their company and hope they are getting off at the same stop as ourselves. “For we on the train without them would make our journey miserable. “Some people leave the train earlier than we would like, and as we pull out of the station they have departed, we can only look at the empty seat next to us. “We look out the window, remembering the conversations we shared, the love we endured and the thrill of being in each other’s company. “These memories are what we cling to and hold dear to our hearts. “At the next stop another person hops on, oblivious to the pain we are feeling. “We get to know this person and let them sit in their seat, not replacing them, but allowing us to share our memories of the previous passenger. “We continue our journey; being happier, richer and wiser from the people we have known,” an emotional Walden said.
Other Awards Cosi Anagnostou has taken out the David Spence Medal as the U19 best and fairest in a close count, while Ben Andonov and Mitch Anderson have tied for the Paul Brightman Medal as Reserves Best and Fairest. Anagnostou was thankful for the season, in which he kicked 11 goals from 17 matches and was a constant force in the midfield, and the help of his coaches in the breakthrough premiership. “Thankyou to Jamie for the year and you’ve been a really great coach,” Anagnostou said. “I’d like to also thank my mum who came down to all my games and thanks to all the boys for a really great year. Benjamin Andonov enjoyed a terrific season in the reserves for the Bulls, being named in the best virtually every single week and making his senior debut for the club this season, while Mitch Anderson enjoyed a breakout season, kicking almost a goal a game and also featuring at senior level on three occasions.

Tony 'Giggsy’ McGarrigle has been awarded for his outstanding contribution to the Noble Park Football Club, becoming one of the new Life Members of the club. McGarrigle has been a long-time servant of the football club and is highly respected by everyone associated with the Bulls. The club stalwart was honoured by his achievement, citing the club’s culture and ability to produce quality footballers as one of a kind. “It’s a great club to be a part of. “I’ve been lucky enough to enjoy some great success at this club. “I look at the people who have got life memberships before me and to now be one of them, it’s a great honour. I always wanted to win a best and fairest here and it takes one good year to do that but it takes a lot of good years to win this so I am really honoured,” McGarrigle said. Club legend Stewart Kemperman was also rewarded with life membership at the football club after a distinguished playing career at the Bulls. There were a number of other playing awards given on the night, while perpetual awards for outstanding contributions to the club were also given out. U19 premiership coach Jamie Barnett was awarded a certificate of congratulations from the City of Greater Dandenong by Cr Roz Blades, while Mick Moyle won the Kevin Meade (Players' Appreciation Award) and David Allan won the President’s Award for his outstanding service to the football club. 45 DANDENONG JOURNAL Monday, 10 October, 2016

Last Man Stands for age By Nick Creely Social cricket is taking off in Australia, and Dandenong’s very own competitive team is making waves and creating opportunities for older cricketers. Last Man Stands is a social Twenty20 cricket competition, which is played by over 90,000 players worldwide. It was founded back in 2005 in London, and has grown legs in providing an easier way for eager cricketers who are passionate about the game to take part in competitive cricket. The competition is a modified version of Twenty20 cricket which has differing rules to conventional cricket, such as it features only eight players per side and requires the last batsman remaining to stay in until they are dismissed. The Dandenong competition will begin on 24 October at Greaves Reserve, Dandenong, which still has several spots available. Last Man Stands caters to participants 25 years and older, with an aim at appealing to cricketers who perhaps don’t have the time to commit to Saturday cricket and training. Last year’s Dandenong team, ‘The Greenbacks’, were a raging success, making it to the semi-final of the Champions League for Victoria’s best teams last summer. Although missing out on making the finals, the team will be aiming to go one step further this coming season. Winner of the Champions League will receive sponsored entry to the Australian Championships on the Gold Coast each year, with an eventual winner from that competition receiving prizemoney to go to the World Championships, which this season will be held in Cape Town, South Africa. Each year, this world championship is held in different countries, and The Greenbacks will be hoping it is their time to shine. Kemperman retires, with a little emotion to boot By Nick Creely Local football legend Stewart Kemperman officially announced his retirement from football in an emotional address at the Peter Reece Medal. Adding to this, the humble champion was awarded Life Membership, along with Tony McGarrigle at Noble Park in what was due recognition of his commitment and loyalty to his football club. Kemperman, 32, possesses a phenomenal playing career but will now take on a different challenge as senior coach of Berwick. The superstar half-back spent his junior career at Berwick, before playing with the Dandenong Stingrays, winning a premiership with Beaconsfield, before joining the Frankston Dolphins in the VFL for four years. Kemperman was best known as a tremendous kick of the football, as well as for strong football nous and elite fitness. In 2007 when Kemperman joined Noble Park, he made his name as a quality footballer and leader.

was grateful for the positive influence the club had had on his life. “I’ve been very fortunate to play at such a wonderful club and you look around the room and everyone you see is just such a great person. “Credit to everyone and the loyalty they have shown over the years and remaining true to the club. “Some of my best mates in life are from this club so I’m very thankful and I can’t explain my gratitude enough at the moment,” an emotional Kemperman said. Noble Park club legend Craig Anderson has also played his last game for the football club, in a career at the Bulls spanning over a decade. Anderson, who spent time on Collingwood’s rookie list, was a creative and line-breaking midfielder who played with soul and heart every time he stepped foot on the turf. The club will now have to more forward without the presence of two of their greatest champions, but are well equipped to move forward with the lessons they have brought to the club.
Great facing up to the end Every time a great of the game is farewelled, the past disconnects a little bit more from the present. Piece by piece, the on-court legacy of some of the most famous moments are what remains to drive the next generation into following the same path. Fans never want to think about the end - but it is inevitable. For WNBA legend Penny Taylor, her journey in basketball has come to an end. The last time she featured on the international stage was during the Rio Olympics - where she was farewelled out of basketball after the gut-wrenching loss to Serbia, but now her WNBA career has come to a close. During an expansive career, in which she played for Dandenong Rangers in the WNBL, Cleveland Rockers and her beloved Phoenix Mercury in the WNBA, Taylor went on to become an iconic figure in women’s basketball in Australia. In her final WNBA finals campaign with Phoenix, Brittany Griner, Diana Taurasi, DeWanna Bonner drove the Mercury through for everything they had to extend Phoenix’s season, and with it prolong Taylor’s career. But sometimes a fairy-tale doesn’t need a perfect ending - falling to Minnesota in the best of five semi-final series. All Taylor ever wanted was to bring home the championships for her fans. For one last time in the famous orangeand-purple Phoenix jersey, she sat at her final press conference and thanked the WNBA and the world for what they’ve given her. “Right now I’m just really disappointed about this game and this series obviously,” Taylor said. “You never want to go out on a loss and I think when I could walk again and look back, I’ll be very proud of my career and everything I’ve achieved. “All that’s ever mattered to me was winning and I’ve been able to do it a few times here and I’ll never forget those teams and that feeling. “I’ll always be proud of that and I feel great that I get to carry those wins with me. “It’s a real comfort to me that all that ever did matter to me was winning and I was able to do that. “I’m just going to enjoy doing nothing and see how long that lasts. “I’ve got a feeling that won’t be very long. “I started professionally at roughly 16 so that’s a good stretch - I’ve loved every minute of it. I probably know basketball better than anything else - it’s something I love, it’s in my blood and I can see definitely doing something with basketball in the future."
Handling the pressure and still getting the glory By Nick Creely When success eludes a team for so long, it makes clubs question themselves and puts pressure on the next batch coming through to deliver glory. Premiership droughts are testing times for football clubs, and only the strongest clubs can break through the barrier when the pressure ramps up. For the Noble Park U19s, who had endured 32 long years in the premiership wilderness before finally breaking through against Vermont, the selfbelief and confidence within was unwavering. In a low scoring affair, the U19s prevailed by 22 points over Vermont, and in the process achieving a feat the club always knew was around the corner. Life member David Spence, who the Best and Fairest award is named after, was thrilled for the club and its achievements this season. 46 DANDENONG JOURNAL Monday, 10 October, 2016

Cr Roz Blades of the City of Greater Dandenong, who was on hand to deliver the coach a certificate of congratulations for the outstanding achievement at the Peter Reece Medal, recognised the achievement and the club’s journey to win the flag. “I’ve got a certificate of recognition for the coach of the Noble Park Football Club U19s. “This awards is to do with the players, coaches, parents that claimed a very significant premiership for Noble Park. “Congratulations to them on behalf of the City of Greater Dandenong,” Blades said. People within the football club remarked on the night how highly they rate coach Jamie Barnett and talked about how he has been a positive influence on the young footballers.
Captain of the U19s victory, Alex Aiello, echoed these remarks, and thanked everyone from the support staff, coaches to parents for all their hard work throughout the year. “Just on behalf of all the U19s, we thank you for your contribution and hard work in helping us get this premiership,” Aiello said. “Jamie, you’ve especially had a fantastic year coaching the boys,” “Thankyou very much for all your help and the boys really do appreciate it. The biggest highlight of the night however, was the entire U19s premiership side on stage singing the club song with gusto and passion, proudly showing off their silverware in front of their fans. The spirit never really left the Bulls, all it took was one premiership to re-discover why this club has been so highly successful over the last 30 years. Perhaps this premiership is the kick-started for a dynasty of success for the Noble Park U19s.

Ally is no lone Ranger
Man's Night to help the kids
By Nicholas Creely The basketball world has continued to expand for Ally Malott, who touched down in Melbourne last week ahead of her WNBL debut season with the Dandenong Jayco Rangers. From humble roots in Madison Township, Ohio, Malott, 23, has constantly pushed her basketball boundaries. First to college at the University of Dayton where she helped the Flyers into the Elite Eight in 2015 ... before she moved up to DC after she was drafted by the Washington Mystics WNBA team. But it’s her latest relocation that has her head spinning - a move halfway around the world to keep her skills sharp in the upcoming WNBL season. “I’ve always wanted to visit Australia and last year (abroad) I didn’t have the best experience, so I was kind of looking for somewhere I’d enjoy playing and enjoy my team-mates, coaches and the city,” Malott said. “I heard a lot of great things about Melbourne, so when coach called me when we were talking it seemed like there were a lot of positive things about the team and I could see myself playing for them ... so it didn’t take me very long. “Everything that I’ve heard - from players who have played here in previous years - they have nothing but nice things to say about the league and this team - so I think I’m ready for some competitive games and to get better as a team.” Malott remains amazed she gets these chances to pursue a professional life in basketball after the successes she had throughout her time as a Flyer. “It was a big adjustment - the professional game, it wasn’t something that I knew I was going to do, after four years of college I didn’t think that was something I would do, but when it came to light it was exciting and it’s a big blessing to be able to keep playing for my job,” Malott said. “My senior year of college we went to the elite eight and I’m from a smaller school and it taught me the lesson that if everyone believes in each other and believes in the process and what the coaches are saying ... you don’t have to be a big dog necessarily to get success. “That was probably the biggest highlight so far, but obviously it’s a privilege to play in the WNBA and now as well in the WNBL and I’m looking forward to what happens this season.” Malott’s been working on her outside game and perfecting the three-spot. “This past season they (Washington) moved me to the three and it was kind of an adjustment from picking and popping and being under the basket to being on the perimeter - so I’ve been working a lot at my quickness and trying to guard smaller people,” Malott said. Rangers coach Larissa Anderson was thrilled to find someone of Malott’s caliber available for this year’s WNBL campaign. “She’s really excited about being in Australia and we have signed a fantastic player who possibly wouldn’t be available and now we have someone who is keen,” Anderson said. “Everyone knows we’re without Bunts and Annalise from last year and they settled in beautifully, but we’re really excited to have Ally come in,” Anderson said.

Over $25,000 was raised for local community groups at Sandown Park’s annual ‘Man’s Night’ on 29 September. More than 1500 people packed the View Road circuit for the Grand Final public holiday eve race meeting, including more than 600 diners. In addition to an exciting night of greyhound racing, patrons enjoyed a series of games and activities including racing simulators, darts, table pool, basketball, air hockey, pinball and a bucking bull. Gold coin donations and tin rattling raised several thousand dollars for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia, which was later topped up to $10,000 by the club. The PCFA was also a beneficiary of the success of the on-course Punters Club. Despite a number of roughies saluting on the night (no favourites won and half of all winners paid $10 or more), Punters Club host punter Troy Little managed to return $50 for a $20 outlay. That payout was rounded down, with the difference seeing more than $1200 of Punters Club winnings donated to the PCFA, a decision that proved very popular among the winning punters. Adding to the AFL Grand Final flavour of the night, half of all patrons won a $10 mystery bet after Felton Bale won race eight, while decked in the Sydney Swans colours. There was $10,000 up for grabs in the final of the popular Club Challenge series. Media personality and ex-footballer Rex Hunt hosted a series of keenly contested games and competitions - including a pie eating competition - with Ashwood Football Netball Club emerging victorious to collect the $5000 winner's cheque. The Moorabbin Kangaroos finished second and pocketed $3000, while Lilydale Bowling Club and Scoresby Football Club tied for third and won $1000 each. Meanwhile, the Noble Park and Springvale City Rotary Clubs held a fund-raising function in support of the Dolly Parton Imagination Library. The Rotarians raised $6000 for the library, which aims to improve childhood literacy for children by giving them a free, high quality age-appropriate book each month from birth to age 5. The night also marked 50 days until the world’s richest greyhound race, the $600,000 TAB Melbourne Cup which will be run on Friday 18 November. Aimed to appeal to a wide range of customers the new sedan sets the bar high in the small-car class with the addition of the Honda Sensing suite of advanced safety and driver-assist technologies, available on the halo model VTi-LX (the test vehicle). For those who would like a splash of extra colour in their driving experience Honda has introduced the optional Black Pack, which fitted to the VTi, VTi-S, VTi-L and VTi-LX for $2998 includes black 17-inch alloys, black front under spoiler, black side skirt set, black door mirror covers, black ducktail spoiler and black sports grille. Owners of the sporty RS can get in on the act with a Black Pack that includes 17-inch black alloys, black front under spoiler, black side skirt set and black door mirror covers for $2298. The new sedan leads a three-pronged launch program for the model with the Civic hatch arriving in the first half of 2017, followed by the highperformance Type R hatch. The new Civic front is more forceful than that of its predecessor, with its full-width, deep horizontal chrome-plated band cutting the radiator grille from the air intake below and ending in LED headlamps on the outer edges. The Honda ‘H’ is writ large on the central grille. A long bonnet links with swept-back, slim Apillars announcing a profile given over to aerodynamic efficiency which is complemented by underbody panelling which also improves fuelefficiency and delivers the bonus of cabin quietness. The main compartment is topped by a sliding, padded armrest and includes two outsize drink holders, which can be removed to take tablet computers

A high-mounted, easy-to-view seven-inch Android-based touchscreen allows users to swipe, tap and pinch, like on a tablet or smartphone, to control the vehicle’s audio system, display settings and other advanced features. The VTi-LX model boasts a premium 452W audio system with ten speakers, including subwoofer and, for the first time in a Honda, digital radio offers greater choice of stations, clearer reception and quality sound. The Civic VTi-LX is powered by a new turbopetrol 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine, producing 127 kW of power and peak torque of 220 Nm between 1700 and 5500rpm. The engine is mated to a new continuously variable automatic transmission that combines with the low-inertia turbo, variable timing and electronic control, and electronic waste gate to make the best of power delivery across the engine’s full rev range. The Civic’s top-line safety rating is underpinned by the ACE (Advanced Compatibility Engineering) body structure, which uses the engine compartment to absorb and disperse collision energy during a head-on vehicle-to-vehicle collision.
