MELBOURNE Cup heroes Michelle Payne and Prince Of Penzance could well be at the TAB Cranbourne Cup meeting on Sunday, but not necessarily together. The Darren Weir-trained Prince of Penzance, last year's shock winner of the famous Flemington two-mile classic, is among the 25 nominations for the $300,000 Cranbourne feature. Payne, who became the first female jockey to win Melbourne Cup, has not be reunited with the Prince on the racetrack since that win, and is unlikely to take the ride if Weir was to accept for the race. But she may still be on the track in her new capacity as a trainer in her own right, saddling up VRC Oaks hopeful Queen of Zealand. For the full story, turn to sport.

CASEY’S flag has been raised back to full-mast after 20 extra trained police were announced for the municipality. Casey’s police district inspector Don Brown confirmed the fullytrained recruits would be posted to frontline duties - such as watchhouse and divisional van patrols - in Narre Warren, Cranbourne and Endeavour Hills from 14 November. “They will be dedicated to frontline tactical response. They will not be tied up with any other taskforce or any other units.” Further recruits are expected in Casey in April as part of a statewide rollout of extra 300 officers and a new police resourcing model. “I’m told Casey will be getting some of those resources.” Inspector Brown said the boosted police numbers would target the numerous thefts of vehicles, thefts from vehicles and aggravated burglaries. “We will reduce the high-harm offending such as aggravated burglaries and robberies. “There is light at the end of the tunnel.” Inspector Brown said he couldn’t answer whether the trialled closure of Endeavour Hills police station on weekend nights would still go ahead. “The closure hasn’t yet started and we don’t know how many police we’re getting (in April).” Recent official crime stats show nearly 50 burglaries, 40 assaults and 150 thefts a week in Casey. The crime rate rose by 14.5 per cent on a per capita basis in the 12 months up to June 2016. At a council meeting on 4 October, Casey mayor Sam Aziz successfully reversed his earlier proposal for council’s flag to fly at half-mast

as part of a law-and-order campaign. He told Star News his original half-mast notion was “outside the square” but necessary to highlight that “we were a city in distress”. “We are now a city of appreciation that we’re getting the resources that police need to make our community safer.” In a triumphant Facebook post, which ended with the catchcry “Cop that! It worked!”, Cr Aziz wrote: “For all the arm chair commentators who accused me of being political and criticised me for lowering the Casey flag to half-mast to symbolise a community in distress until we get more police, pardon the pun but: Cop that! It worked!” Cr Aziz said he would continue to press for tougher sentencing, deportation of dual-national offenders and a state-federal joint taskforce to tackle youth gangs. Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan said extra police had been funded as part of a $596 million public safety package in the May budget. “Let’s be very clear- Cr Sam Aziz and the Casey Council do not dictate the government’s policies on policing matters nor any other state matter. “Perhaps, councillors should’ve focused more on local government issues if they are concerned about their prospects of re-election. “We face a number of complex law and order challenges - including the scourge of family violence, the need to crack down on gangs and gun crime - which is why this government continues to give Victoria Police the people, technology and infrastructure they need to keep our community safe.” Police Minister Lisa Neville said police made the resourcing decision as acknowledgment of “growing pressures” in the Casey growth corridor.

Ed hits the streets By Victoria Stone-Meadows THE Shadow Minister for Police, Community Safety and Corrections got out on the frontline with Cranbourne Police on the night of Thursday 29 September. Edward O’Donohue spent the night with Acting Sergeant Ross Stewart of Cranbourne as he worked his night shift in the divisional van. “I started at 10pm at finished at about 3.30am or 3.45am,” Mr O’Donohue said. “I was really impressed by the professionalism and compassion and concern to act for the community’s interest. “It is it obvious they are on the frontline and the people in the community look to them to fix things.” Mr O’Donohue said the night out with the police gave him a better understanding of the nature of the job. “Things can change dramatically as a result of a triple-zero phone call and resources can be diverted at the drop of a hat,” he said. “To watch the police in action and the range of call-outs they have to respond to, from missing persons to late night parties to an aggravated burglary, to suspicious vehicles and people. “The calls and requests were constant and never-ending.” Acting Sergeant Ross Stewart said there was a lot for Mr O’Donohue to see on that night and the ride along was a good experience for everyone. “We had quite a diverse night,” he said. “We went to suspicious vehicles, noise complaints, an aggravated burglary, people being drunk - a pretty varied night. “It was good he could see what we do and go through things from our perspective and also quite good in the way he could see the different things we go through and he was interested the whole night and asked a lot of questions.” Sgt Stewart said it he would be happy to do something similar again. “I am more than happy to show people what it is like so they get an understanding of what we do,” he said. Mr O’Donohue said it was eyeopening to see how under-staffed and over-worked the police officers in the Casey are. “There is an enormous police resourcing problem in the south-east,” he said. “In my conversations with police units since the change of government, it’s clear more police are needed in the Casey and Cardinia regions in particular. “Not just for community safety and the growing population but it is
Arson attempt falls flat AN UNKNOWN man has caused damage to a house in Cranbourne during an attempted arson attack. At about 9.40am on Friday 30 September, a male was seen exiting a small red hatchback car and approaching a house on William Street. The man then poured a flammable liquid on the front window of the house but was not able to ignite it. Having failed his first attempt, the man then threw a glass bottle of liquid though the window of the house, breaking both the window and the bottle. The man then left the scene of his failed attack in the same small red hatchback. Police ask anyone who may have seen any suspicious people or cars in the area to contact Casey CIU or Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.
Massive diesel spill A DIESEL spill at the United Petrol Station on the corner of Cameron Street and the South Gippsland Highway in Cranbourne caused strong fumes to be released. CFA and MFB units were called to the scene of the spill at about 7pm on Wednesday 28 September to contain the leak until relevant authorities could conduct a clean up of the spill. While the cause of the spill is unclear, the CFA confirmed about 1000 litres of diesel were spilled at the petrol station and some leaked into storm drains. It took CFA crews from Cranbourne and Narre Warren about an hour to contain the spill with sand and stop more diesel leaking into nearby gutters. The CFA believe the spill has been isolated to the petrol station with no serious contamination of nearby drains and the EPA has been notified of the spill. An advice warning was in place until 11.30pm for residents of Cranbourne East, Cranbourne, Junction Village, Cranbourne West, Botanic Ridge, Devon Meadows and Fiveways due to the diesel fumes, however the CFA say there was no immediate threat to the community. Traffic restrictions were in place around the petrol station and motorists were advised to avoid the area until the spill was cleaned completely.
Man gets shot in leg A CRANBOURNE man was found in Carrum Downs on the afternoon of Saturday 1 October with a gunshot wound to his leg. Police and other emergency services were called to Robinson Road in Carrum Downs about 1.30pm. The man was taken to hospital with non-lifethreatening injuries although the cause of his wounds remains a mystery. Police investigations are ongoing and witnesses or anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

is responsible for staff allocation has indicated that growth communities like Casey will be receiving additional police.” The latest crime statistics show that overall criminal offences have increased by 18 per cent in Casey over a 12-month period between June 2015 and June 2016. The largest jump in offences was seen in abduction and related crimes with a 70 per cent increase over 2015 from 27 offences up to 46 offences. Other crimes that saw a jump in the number of offences in Casey were burglaries and breaking and entering offences, as well as theft by deception offences.
Last round of HPV series THE Casey Fields Criterium track in Cranbourne will host a Human Powered Vehicle (HPV) endurance event this month which is open to all to experience this unique sport. The event is being hosted by the Casey-Cardinia HPV and Cycling Club, and is the last round of the 2016 Jet Couriers Vic HPV Series. Participants in the event will be riding a recumbent bicycle, similar to a regular bicycle but with the rider lying down rather than sitting on the bike. The endurance event will see teams of six to eight people from schools and community groups in the Cranbourne area, as well as many who have travelled long distances, riding for eight hours. The HPV endurance event will begin at 10am on Saturday 8 October and will finish up at 6pm.

On Monday 3 October his former primary school welcomed its past student back to the school in which he grew up to share with students and teachers his experiences of competing in the Rio Olympic Games. Through this sharing experience, Josh explained the thrills of competing, his preparation and personal highlights as a member of the Australian Olympic Team. Josh, 23, spoke about his time at Tooradin Primary School, his experiences as the school captain in 2005 and the values that that have seen him succeed on the world’s biggest stage. “I love Tooradin. “It’s always home for me and to come back to the school

in which I grew up is a special experience. “I lived here until I was 21 so Tooradin will forever be home to me and it’s a place I hold very dear to my heart. “I get back here as often as I can because it holds some very special memories,” Beaver said. The students were inspired by their local hero who was once one of those kids who idolised sportsman and wanted to become an Olympian since the age of 12. The awestruck students asked Beaver a range of questions such as “what are your plans for the future?” and “where did you sleep?” A number of past teachers were also present to hear about Beaver’s passion and where his dreams have taken him. Beaver said he believes in hard work, care for others and never forgetting where he came from.

ORGANISERS of a forum to combat Islamophobia in Melbourne’s south-east are pulling away publicity due to security fears. Casey-based teacher Inaz Janif said she organised the forum ‘The Right to Remain Muslim’ due to several reports of young Muslim women being assaulted in public. Among the victims was a woman whose hijab was snatched off her head by a male in a Hallam supermarket. Ms Janif was also aware of a group of girls wearing hijabs who were shoved into a wall by an attacker in a Melbourne shopping centre and another nearly forced off the road by a hate-speaking fellow driver. “These are people who I know and care about. Should these girls lose their lives over this?” Ms Janif said after initial reluctance by police to prosecute the supermarket attacker, he was handed a 12-month goodbehaviour bond. However, she said many victims - vulnerable, young and from refugee backgrounds were not comfortable to report such attacks. “That’s why it’s so disturbing to see people in the national political sphere giving oxygen to people who say Muslims are not welcome. “It’s one thing to verbally attack people, another thing to put our hands on other people.” Posts on a south-east based Facebook pages that incited

She requested the date and place of this month’s forum not be publicised due to “hate mail” she’s already received as well as security concerns by police. Ms Janif said the forum was a first of its kind in the southeast. It was designed to promote understanding of “racism, bigotry and Islamophobia”, and to make young people resilient and stronger against anti-Islam sentiment. “We need to highlight the importance of reporting these crimes and knowing it’s not OK. By staying silent, it is giving the message that it’s OK. “People have been quiet for
so long, and this is trying to open the discussion.” Speakers at the forum include Monique Toohey on being resilient to racism, Yassir Morsi on understanding Islamophobia and Mohamud Hersi. It is supported by Project Mosaic funding from the Islamic Council of Victoria. Ms Janif recalls after the September 11 attacks how she was shunned by fellow university students at the time. “I’d sit down and people would get up and sit on the other side of the lecture room. “I built up strength and resilience by thinking about where I come from and where I want to be. I thought about other strong role-models who are female and Muslim.”

Thompsons Road contract signed By Victoria Stone-Meadows THE Victorian Government has announced BMD Constructions has been awarded the contact to upgrade Thompsons Road between the Western Port Highway and the Cranbourne Berwick Road. The contract is to begin stage one of the $175 million project, with commencement expected by the end of the year. BMD has managed many large road infrastructure projects in Victoria and its urban development branch is developing the Clydevale Residential Estate in North Clyde. BMD’s road projects in-
clude the M80 Ring Road Upgrade near Sunshine North, the Buangor Bypass project, the Bendigo Airport redevelopment and the Princess Highway East Duplication. The first stage of upgrades to Thompsons Road will be the removal of the level train crossing near Merinda Park Train Station and some road duplication. This stage will see a sixlane bridge built over the train line between Evans Road and the South Gippsland Highway and Thompsons Road duplicated between Marriott Boulevard and the South Gippsland Highway.
Stage one will also provide new paths and street lighting for cyclists and pedestrians to improve the connection to Merinda Park train station. The following stages of the project will see major changes made to the road and pedestrian infrastructure of the Thompsons Road. Subsequent stages of the project will see further duplication of Thompsons Road from the Frankston Dandenong Road to Marriot Boulevard and from the Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road to the Berwick Cranbourne Road. There will also be a total of 10 kilometres of new shared
path along Thompsons Road for cyclist and pedestrian use. Minister for Roads Luke Donnellan said the upgrades to Thompsons Road would be a big win for the expanding local community. “The Thompsons Road upgrade will reduce traffic and travel time, make the drive safer and support our growing population,” he said. “We want Victorians to spend less time stuck in traffic and more time at home with their families.” The Victorian Government has predicted a completion date for the entire project of early to mid-2019.

INFRASTRUCTURE Victoria has released its draft 30 year plan which shows major upgrades to the Cranbourne train line are at least 15 years away. The report comes after the launch of an online petition which called for the upgrades attracted more than 250 signatures with an accompanying Facebook group containing 580 members. The report was released on Tuesday 4 September and shows there are plans to duplicate the train line between Dandenong and Cranbourne and extend the rail line to Clyde. However, both of those projects are not scheduled to start for another 15 to 30 years and Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan has not given any indication they will be fast tracked. The petition calls for duplication of the rail line between Cranbourne and Dandenong, the extension of the Cranbourne line to Cranbourne East and Clyde North and better parking at Cranbourne and Merinda Park Stations among other demands. Petition organiser Jimmy Varghese declined to comment at
length because he is a candidate in the upcoming Casey Council elections. However, he said: “Improving the train line is the council’s highest priority. “We are the fastest growing region in the state, and will have another 140,000 residents in the next 10 years.” But Ms Allan said the shortterm upgrades to the rail line were sufficient. “We’re delivering more than $14 billion in projects that will directly benefit Cranbourne passengers, including the Metro Tunnel, next-generation signalling, new high-capacity trains and the removal of every level crossing between Dandenong and the city,” she said. “These projects will reduce crowding and provide more frequent, reliable trains for local passengers.” Infrastructure Victoria is seeking public feedback on the draft plan before compiling the final report which is due in December. WITH the council elections drawing near, it makes us wonder that in the City of Casey 81 candidates have been nominated for just 11 seats. The question on everyone’s lips must be why so many candidates for such a meagre number of seats. Apart from the old and new councillors, are the rest just dummy candidates or are they specifically qualified for a council role and what must be infused by them in the council. Council must not be used as a stepping stone to foster further into state politics. Once elected, councillors must sign an agreement to complete their full tenure of service as a councillor without being influenced by council hierarchy, be honest, transparent and accountable and always remember that it is the ratepayer who is paying your salaries. Mayor must care I WRITE to you in response to claims by Mayor Aziz that he is not running any 'dummy’ candidates. If that is the case, then why are seven candidates who quite clearly have opposing views to his own, preferencing him either second or third? Similarly, a majority of these candidates have not provided adequate contact information. I AM writing in follow-up to a story in last week’s edition in relation to the disastrous alliance between Rex Flannery and Paul Richardson. Mr Flannery states that I must be worried. He is right, I am worried - not by him as any sort of credible competition, but by his reckless behaviour! Firstly, Mr Flannery has already demonstrated gross irresponsibility by advising Mr Richardson (who is continuously in dispute with the City of Casey for reasons that reside only in his imagination) to stop paying rates! I have a record of this in an email. Is this the responsible attitude we expect from someone running for council? If I had a dispute with VicRoads, real or imagined, do I stop paying my car registration? If I had a dispute with my bank, real or imagined, do I stop paying my mortgage? What would be the consequences for such reckless actions? Is this the level of maturity and responsibility Mr Flannery intends to display should he get elected? Moreover, how could Mr Flannery state that he cares about our residents and Casey, and then preference a disaster like Mr Richardson second? This is the same Mr Richardson who was arrested and convicted in the Magistrates Court for trespassing and resisting arrest. The same Mr Richardson who made a vexatious claim to VCAT against council, and had the case thrown out, but only after costing the
Casey ratepayers $200,000 in unnecessary legal fees. The same Mr Richardson who sends almost on a daily basis ridiculous emails to the whole world, making all sorts of accusations against people and organisations. The same Mr Richardson who served as a one-term wonder from 2005 and 2008 and delivered absolutely nothing to his constituents, except a barrage of disruptions and unfounded allegations, which have tarnished the good name of this great city.
How can anyone take either Mr Flannery or Mr Richardson seriously, given the behaviour of both, and the fact that they have now formed this reckless alliance preferencing each other? The future of Casey is far too important, and far too complex, to be left in the hands of those who have already demonstrated they are happy to destroy the place before they have even begun! A MAN who has been jailed 30 times in the past 20 years has been spared a further stint in jail. The 40-year-old had done every form of sentence in his numerous court appearances, including drug treatment orders and suspended sentences, but had appeared to have turned the corner, his lawyer told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 3 October. The man faced a disqualified driving charge but argued he had assumed at the time his licence had been reinstated upon his release from jail. He had since been out of trouble with the law for seven months - his longest stint without arrest for a long time, his lawyer said. The judge commented there was no point jailing the man again: “You would do it on my ear.” The man was ordered to perform 50 hours of community work.
DANDENONG MP Gabrielle Williams has taken a keen interest in Casey Council electioneering, especially that of former ALP member and newly turned Liberal Rafal Kaplon. Ms Williams told Star News she had taken issue with her image being used in Cr Kaplon’s mailout. “Although I bear Rafal no ill will and have worked with him on a number of local matters, I want to make it clear, my permission was not sought and the use of my image is unauthorised for the purpose of election material.” Recently Ms Williams urged Cr Kaplon to modify his Facebook post about a shortage of police numbers in Casey. THE Lynbrook Lake Lantern Festival is back, and brighter than ever. It's a feelgood community event held Saturday 8 October from 4pm at Banjo Paterson park in Lynbrook.
There will be three free jumping castles and a free animal farm. All guests can release a floating lantern at dusk on the lake for $2 (please bring a lighter to light the candle.) For a small fee kids and adults can paint a lantern which lights up to take home. After dark they can take this lantern on the wonderful lantern walk, led by a surprise lit-up friend. There is entertainment on the stage from 4pm including singers, dancers, karate demonstration and a band! All kinds of food from fairy floss to popcorn, potato twisters, coffee, barbecue, Krispy Kreme donuts, ice creams, hot dogs to Thai food and so much more. At 9pm there will be an amazing fire show with tricks never seen in Lynbrook, a wonderful finale to the festival. This event has something for everyone, including free entry, and all are welcome.

KELLY’S Motor Club Hotel in Cranbourne have won a national award for their gaming room and contributed money to a local community charity. The hotel was awarded Best Gaming Venue in the regional category at the 2016 Australian Hotel Association National Awards for Excellence. Hotel manager Michael Goldie said the award was a great validation of the hard work they had put in to redesign the gaming area. “Last year we decided to look at how the gaming room operated,” he said. “All gaming rooms previously were designed for NSW standards, where you put the machines in and get as much as you can out of them. “We wanted to make ours more customer-friendly.” The hotel made changes such as separating the machines to give people more space and increased the base lighting level by 400 per cent. “It is now a very bright gaming room and the changes we made make it more inviting and people can mix with other people but not be living on top of each other,” Mr Goldie said. To showcase the new gaming room, Kelly’s held a 50 per cent off meals night where people could come along for a cheap meal and see the newly designed area. It was through the extraordinary success of the night that the hotel was able to contribute funds to The ACE (Aiding Casey Education) Foundation. The hotel has a long history of supporting local schools in the area through donating money to assist parents and schools with students’ transitions from primary to secondary education. “We’ve been doing the scholarship here for about 20 or 25 years and last

Dr Leon Shapero, chair and managing director of ACE, said the money was a wonderful gift to receive from the hotel. “The ACE Foundation is both honoured and delighted to receive such a generous donation from Kelly’s Cranbourne,” he said. “The $4000 you have raised and
donated will 100 per cent reach children in need within the City of Casey.” Dr Shapero said the money would go towards programs such a study facilities and free tutors for high school students, return to school program for young mothers, and encouragement awards to students. He said it would also help provide 2500 meal replacement drinks per month to high school students who attended school without having eaten breakfast, or who arrived without any lunch. “To Paul and co-owner Michael Goldie as well as to all your staff and to all who contributed, we say a massive thankyou,” Dr Shapero wrote. “We promise to ensure that your monies are properly appropriated and to guarantee as much as is humanly possible that each and every dollar reaches a deserving child.“
A CRANBOURNE man high on a cocktail of ice, GHB and alcohol has defied an intervention order and threatened his mother with a flick-knife near her throat in her living room, a court has heard. The 23-year-old father-of-one had been watching TV in an armchair when he stood up, took out a flick knife and held it an inch from his mother’s throat about 10.30pm on 23 September. “You’re so lucky you didn’t die just then,” the man allegedly said. The man’s brother entered the house and discovered the man sitting in front of the freshly cracked TV screen. The man then allegedly made a stabbing motion with the knife, and later while armed with the knife and a metal pole approached the brother outside the house. The man was in breach of an intervention order which excluded him from within 200 metres of his mother’s house, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court heard on 3 October. The order had been handed down after the accused held a Stanley knife in a threatening manner towards his brother and smashed a window while trying to break into his mother’s house in May.
A defence lawyer told the court that the man’s most recent offending was due to taking ice the night before, followed by “spiked” GHB and a “large amount” of alcohol. She said the man’s presentation had “remarkably improved” during his five days in remand custody. The accused had been self-medicating with drugs after finding another brother’s body post-suicide several years ago. At the same time, his 37-week-old son was stillborn, the lawyer said. “He has been going through hell trying to get his life together, but hasn’t been able to get past his addiction.” The man had limited schooling, with attention-deficit behavioural difficulties, the lawyer said. Given the accused’s youth and lack of priors, he was suitable for a corrections order with mental health and grief counselling, the court was told. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said the man’s mind was in a state of flux, and had been clearly withdrawing from substances during a bail hearing a week earlier. “You were speaking absolute rubbish last week.” He bailed the man to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court for sentencing on 15 November.

All aboard! By Victoria Stone-Meadows RESIDENTS from City of Casey and Greater Dandenong will be more connected than ever with the announcement of new bus routes starting Sunday 13 November. Parliamentary Secretary for infrastructure, Shaun Leane, Member of Cranbourne, Jude Perera, Casey Mayor, Sam Aziz and Greater Dandenong Mayor, Heang Tak made the announcement at Cranbourne train station. The new bus routes will employ about 50 local people as bus drivers for the new and extended services and four new bus bays will be added to Cranbourne train station. The new bus routes will see residents in Cranbourne North have access to three bus line for the first time. Route 799 will be extended to connect passengers to Merinda Park and Cranbourne train stations. The 847 bus route will travel to Cranbourne North under the new route system and connect residents with Berwick train station. A new bus route will be introduced, the 899, that will connect residents in The Avenue Estates directly to Berwick train station. The brand new 792 route will see residents in the Botanic Ridge, Cranbourne West and Pearcedale Road residential areas able to access Cranbourne train station. Up and coming estates in Clyde, Cranbourne East and Lyndhurst will have access to Lynbrook train station will the extension of the 897 route. Mr Leane said the new services will help fill the gap in public transport that has developed in Melbourne’s south east. “We’re providing services where they are needed most by boosting access for residents in new estates and making it easier for people to get where they need to go faster and sooner.” Cr Aziz said the new bus services will make a big difference to the booming population of Casey. “It will make a huge positive difference,” he said. “We are the largest municipality in the state

He also said the improvements to the bus lines are something the City of Casey has been working towards for a long time. “This is a project Casey has lobbied for and we thank the State Government for hearing us and making these improvements,” he said. The upgrade to the Cranbourne and surrounds bus system will have additional benefits to residents as well. There will be more weekend services, more services between Frankston and Cranbourne train stations, more direct and frequent services between Cranbourne and Dandenong stations. Furthermore, the announcement included more connections between east and west Cranbourne, more services between Cranbourne and Clyde, seven days a week and services directly to the Dandenong South Employment Precinct. Services 797 and Route 896 will not run after November 13 as their routes will be absorbed into the new bus routes.

THE Cranbourne Homemaker Centre came alive with fun over the school holidays when the centre hosted a free mini carnival. The carnival was held in the carpark near Red Rooster on Thursday 29 September, and families flocked to the site to enjoy the rides, food and activities on offer. The free carnival boasted a free jumping castle, free rides, free fair floss, free games, free inflatable slide, free animal farm and more. The centre provided a fun and friendly atmosphere where traders of the home maker centre and stallholders alike traded side by side while the kids enjoyed the fun activities. TRADERS at the Cranbourne Homemaker Centre will be ‘painting the town purple’ to encourage people to register for a cancer fund-raiser event — the Relay for Life. Starting 9 October, businesses at the Homemaker Centre will decorate their windows with everything purple to promote the CranbourneNarre Relay for Life. The promotion also encourages people to take advantage of the last week of early bird registrations for the relay. The Cranbourne-Narre Relay for Life team will also be running a community barbecue at the Homemaker Centre for the drive-in showing of Zootopia on 8 October. The Relay for Life for the Cranbourne and surrounding region is open to all residents in the area, and will take place at the Casey Fields athletics track from 4pm, Saturday 5 November to noon, Sunday 6 November. Last year’s Cranbourne-Narre Relay for Life event raised $67,122 which helped fund Cancer Council Victoria’s research in the fight against cancer and prevention and support programs. Kirrily Guinan, cancer survivor and committee member for the Cranbourne-Narre Relay for Life, said the ‘painting the town purple’ initiative was a great help to the organisation. “It’s a call to action,” she said. “We are trying to get as many people as possible registered in Cranbourne before Sunday 9 October when the registration fee is still $20 because after that it is $25.” Ms Guinan said the money raised through relay for life not only helped the cancer council fund valuable research but helped those that are suffering and their families and friends. “I became involved to make a difference in people’s lives so no one has to hear the words you

His 54 charges By Cam Lucadou-Wells A MAN has been jailed after being discovered with four bags filled with $2420 of cigarette lighters, cigarettes, phone chargers and assorted goods inside a Hampton Park shop after closing hours. Aaron Raymond Greenwood, 31, pleaded guilty to 54 charges including a litany of theft and deceptions at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 3 October. Greenwood - who the court was told “had a serious drug habit” - had allegedly hid in an Uncle Buck’s store as it was locked up on 21 August. The court was told the accused allegedly collected $2420 of goods after staff had left the store. Greenwood then allegedly triggered a silent alarm when he broke into a next-door bottle shop through an adjoining roller door, Sgt Staples said. In the Bottle-O Splash Li-
quor store, Greenwood allegedly added $155 of cigarettes and a can of Red Bull to his haul. A bottle-shop staff member, alerted by the alarm, arrived at the store and confronted Greenwood - who then hid in Uncle Buck’s before his arrest by police. Greenwood, who said he used ice and GHB, was on bail at the time over other theft matters in June and July. Some of those charges related to him allegedly using a stolen driver's licence to test drive - and not return - two vehicles from separate car yards. He was also accused of using the stolen licence to attempt to take out a $5000 bank loan in Frankston, and to buy several iPhone 6S phones at various outlets. Greenwood also racked up about $2000 of sub-$100 purchases from stolen credit cards in a pre-dawn spending spree at servos and supermarkets in May.
There was also an outstanding warrant for failing to appear in court on 16 August on charges of disqualified driving and using an unregistered vehicle. Greenwood’s lawyer conceded the accused’s offending had spiralled out of control while using GHB, prescription drugs and ice. However, his 43-day stint in remand custody - his first time in jail - was “sobering”, the lawyer said. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen noted Greenwood’s “volume” of offending, all after being put on a community corrections order in late April. “You could see the wheels were falling off.” Mr Vandersteen said it was a shame Greenwood was only appreciating the opportunity of the community corrections order after a drug-free stint in jail. Greenwood was sentenced to a further 47 days in jail and disqualified from driving for six months.
Just drop in for this art exhibition BALLA Balla Community house will hold an art exhibition with works by participants of the ongoing Drop in Program facilitated by the City of Casey. The drop in program allows people who may be socially isolated by a mental health condition to come together for socialisation. The participants have organised an exhibition of their work that will coincide with World Mental Health Day and Mental Health Week.
City of Casey CEO Mike Tyler said the exhibition would showcase the positive outcomes the sessions have achieved for people. “Council runs this program in partnership with Prahran Mission and Monash Health, providing an informal place for these people to drop in and enjoy some social and recreational group activities with others,” he said. “Since it started the group has formed a strong bond and
achieved some positive outcomes, with this exhibition being an example of one of the great things they have been able to achieve together.” Mr Tyler said the City of Casey Council took the support networks for people suffering from a mental illness very seriously. The exhibition will kick off Monday 10 October and be available for viewing from 9am to 3pm at the Balla Balla Community Centre.

Victorians beating gas threats VICTORIANS are kicking goals when it comes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, with more than 180 Victorianbased organisations partnering with the Andrews Labor Government in its climate change pledge initiative TAKE2. Premier Daniel Andrews and Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change Lily D’Ambrosio launched Pledge Action Day at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) earlier last month. The MCG is one of the TAKE2 Founding Partners. Effective climate change action needs a team approach. All sectors of the community can play a vital role in reducing their greenhouse gas emissions to ensure Victoria makes a meaningful contribution to keeping the temperature rise to under two degrees. “Collective action is the only way to achieve real change in reducing our emissions and reaching net zero emissions by 2050,” Premier Daniel Andrews said. Like other Founding Partners, the MCG is helping bring Victoria closer to its net zero emissions target when the siren sounds in 2050. Thanks to 12,500 new light fittings and a cloud monitoring system, the MCG is now a world leader, recycling 75 per cent of its waste and reducing water use by 45 per cent.
The Labor Government has made it mandatory for all government departments to pledge actions to reduce emissions from their operations and move towards low carbon technologies and practices. Some of Victoria’s most innovative businesses and community organisations have signed up as TAKE2 Founding Partners: Zoos Victoria is the world’s first certified carbon neutral zoo, using sustainable lighting, heating and cooling, small scale solar installations and best practice environmental management Qantas Group has lifted the fuel efficiency of its fleet and aims for an annual improvement of 1.5 per cent, along with a target of halving its emissions by 2050 compared with 2005 levels. Tesla’s mission is to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy with advanced electric vehicles the development of renewable electricity generation through electric energy storage systems. So, just what is a lentigo maligna? A LENTIGO maligna (literally a ‘malignant freckle’) is a very slow growing but insidious type of melanoma occurring on the sun damaged skin of people from their forties onwards. They are particularly common on the head and neck. They are sometimes so slow growing that the
person will ‘get used to them’ and not recognise them as a problem even when they occur in very visible sites such as the face. Furthermore the person’s friends, relatives or even doctor may not recognise a lentigo maligna from other benign freckles and pigmentations. Untreated however lentigo maligna will ex-
pand and invade and eventually become as dangerous as any other melanoma. The treatment is complete surgical excision so early diagnosis is very important to try to avoid large excision or graft repair scars. Dermoscopy (examination of the skin under bright light and 20x magnification) can be very

‘Outstanding Cup field’ By Garry Howe HISTORY could repeat almost 150 years later if the Darren Weir-trained 2015 Melbourne Cup winner Prince Of Penzance takes his place in the field for Sunday’s TAB Cranbourne Cup. It would re-establish a link dating back to the origins of the club. Melbourne Cup winner Toryboy won the feature Cranbourne Shire Handicap at the town’s first official race meeting back in 1867. So Cranbourne Turf Club officials have their fingers crossed that Weir opts for Cranbourne when acceptances for the cup close on Thursday morning. The Prince is also nominated for Saturday’s Herbert Power Stakes at Caulfield. In the book Of Heath and Horses, the club’s official history, author Marc Fiddian notes that Toryboy’s win that day “established a very early link between Cranbourne and metropolitan racing”. Chief executive Neil Bainbridge would love to see that link franked by Prince Of Penzance taking his place in the field. “To have the reigning Melbourne Cup winner among the nominations is enormous,” Mr Bainbridge said. “But the quality doesn’t end there. There are 10 horses among the nominations who have won or been placed at Group 1 level. “On paper, it looks like being an outstanding Cup field.”

His father Pat Trotter rode in six Melbourne Cups between 1973 and ’78 and came within a length of winning in ’77 when running second on the crowd favourite Reckless, trained by Phar

Michelle Payne, who became the first female rider to win a Melbourne Cup on Prince of Penzance last year, may also be at Cranbourne on Sunday, but not necessarily with that horse. Payne had a long stint on the sidelines after being injured in a race fall and has not long returned to the saddle. She hasn’t ridden Prince of Penzance since the cup and is unlikely to if Weir did accept for Sunday. He has been ridden of late by Irishman John Allen.

Olympian touches base with alma mater By Nick Creely ONLY just over a month ago, Tooradin’s Josh Beaver was racing against the world’s fastest swimmers. On Monday 3 October, Tooradin Primary School’s very own Olympic hero returned to his old school to share with students and his former teachers the experiences of the Rio Games. As soon as the Olympian walked through the doors of his old school and recognised some former teachers, who he believes shaped aspects of his life, the community spirit within the young star shone bright. The eager young students were glued to their seats, as the young swimmer answered their questions and spoke in-depth about his life, his sport and his experiences representing his country. Children rushed to him as they sought a picture or an autograph that they could treasure forever. Humility and care for others are values of Josh’s life which he attributes to growing up within a tightknit community. Speaking about his old school and hometown in a room in which his name is etched on the school’s honour board as the 2005 school captain, Josh simply couldn’t wipe the smile off his face when recounting his up-bringing. “I love Tooradin.
“It’s always home for me and to come back to the school in which I grew up is a special experience. “I lived here until I was 21, so Tooradin will forever be home to me, and it’s a place I hold very dear to my heart. “I get back here as often as I can because it holds some very special memories. “It’s been enormous for me the amount of support that Tooradin has shown me. “Obviously, I love speaking to kids at school about chasing their dreams and a little about my journey in the Olympics, and I just want to give back to a community that gave so much to me. “You know, I was once one of those kids at school who just sat there and admired sportspeople and I wanted to become one of them,” Beaver said. Beaver, 23, competed at his first Olympic games in the 100m and 200m backstroke events, before bowing out in the semi-final, finishing 13th overall. In his first 100m backstroke heat, Beaver swam an impressive 53.47 (3rd), in front of a large crowd. Despite not making it to the finals, Beaver is one of a glitter of young Australian swimmers who will be chasing glory in Tokyo in four years. Beaver found the experience at
Rio to be a major thrill, but says his performance has made him hungrier to go to another level and represent his country at Tokyo 2020. “I was honoured to be a part of the Australian team, and it’s something I will never forget. “I made some lifelong friends and have met people who I think I’ll always stay in contact with. “I wasn’t at the opening ceremony, but I attended the closing ceremony, and even though it was bucketing with rain it was just amazing. “My first race, I was actually next to a Brazilian and all I could hear was the crowd cheering him on. “I was in Lane 1, and I was really happy with how I swam. Josh attributes his success to the love for the sport and has harboured ambitions about making the Olympics since his days in Tooradin. “I’ve dreamt about this since I was about 12 when I first truly fell in love with the sport. “I just love being in the water, and obviously doing something that you love is an honour and something I won’t take for granted. But Josh chooses Usain Bolt as his biggest highlight of his experience, with the world-famous Jamaican sprinter stealing the show in Rio. “I remember looking up to where the Jamaican building was
and seeing Usain Bolt and Asafa Powell dancing in their underwear,” Beaver chuckled. “But in all seriousness watching Usain Bolt run the 100m final in front of over 100,000 people was just remarkable to see. Looking ahead, Beaver is currently enjoying a well-earned break but knows that the preparation for the next set of major tournaments is not far away. “Going to the next level is something that I’m constantly aiming for. “I’m only around 175cm tall, so I’ve had to work pretty hard to ensure I’m fast enough to compete. “The four years are going to fly until the next Olympics, and I’ll be 27. “Swimming isn’t going to last forever and I want to ensure I do everything I can while I’m in my prime. “But I’m also really excited about the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast in 2018, and want to get myself right for that. “Playing in front of my home crowd will be like a dream come true. Through all the young champ’s achievements on the world’s biggest stage, Josh still believes in good old-fashioned hard work, care for others and never forgetting where you’ve come from.

Lyndhurst in the limelight By Nick Creely THE 2016 FOXTEL Community Club of the Year, the Lyndhurst Lightning Football Netball Club, has once again been honoured, winning this year’s FOX FOOTY Club Rewards program at the AFL Coaches Association Awards Night in Docklands on Tuesday 27 September. Initially invited as AFLCA guests of honour to the event, Lyndhurst was officially recognised as the most outstanding club out of 68 grassroots clubs from around Australia. The FOX FOOTY Club Rewards program is an initiative driven by Foxtel and the AFLCA to support grassroots sports
and recognise sporting clubs and the benefit they provide to their local community. Speaking earlier last week on Triple M, National Program Ambassador and former AFL coach, Danny Frawley, was full of praise for the work Lyndhurst does. “Local football clubs do a fantastic job for the local community and what Lyndhurst has done this year has been just fantastic”. “Lyndhurst has been involved in a whole host of campaigns, and that is what local football clubs are all about. “Forget the fact that they play netball and football on the weeks, it’s a community initia-
tive, and it’s fantastic that the FOX FOOTY Club Rewards and the AFLCA have got together to present this magnificent award,” Frawley said. CASEY Scorpions captain Jack Hutchins has capped off a consistent season at VFL level, taking out the Gardner Clark Medal as the 2016 club champion on Tuesday 29 September. The 24-year-old key defender, who was also named in the VFL team of the year at fullback, was rock solid all season, in a team that improved drastically to finish as the runners-up to eventual premiers Footscray. Hutchins, who played 19 games from 2011-2014 at the Gold Coast Suns, has been a revelation since joining the Casey Scorpions, with his clean hands, composure under pressure and defensive prowess helping the Scorpions climb up the ladder. Melbourne listed midfielder Alex Neal-Bullen was a constant threat all season, and finished runner-up to Hutchins, while young utility Declan Keilty rounded out the top three after enjoying a breakout season in the VFL. Keilty, 21, is certain to attract the eye of AFL recruiters, with his size, agility and ability to play in different positions making him an elite prospect. Another draft smokey, forward Tim Smith, who was one of the best players in the VFL grand final, was awarded the Coaches Award for his breakout season. club, becoming a craft mediumsized forward with the ability to kick multiple goals and apply elite defensive pressure. In the development league, Todd Vander Haar, the son of former Essendon champion Paul Vander Haar, took out the Best and Fairest award, narrowly beating Jordan Moncrieff by a solitary vote.
Impressive young ruckman Oscar McInerney received the award for Most Improved, after coming on in leaps and bounds in an impressive VFL season. In what was a great night of celebration and recognition of the Scorpions improvement on the playing field, it was evident too see the spread of talent that the club has on hand.

PASSION, pride, resilience and determination are core fundamentals of a successful and thriving football club. For the Noble Park Bulls, these four key ingredients are what make them such a proud club. For 32 long and agonising years, the under19s have been devoid of success, and finally they broke through spectacularly, claiming a gritty premiership against all odds. This feat was one of many stories to come out of the Peter Reece Medal awards night at Club Noble on Thursday 29 September. From their star midfielder Kyle Martin, who claimed yet another Peter Reece Medal, the retirements of club legends Stewart Kemperman and Craig Anderson, the touching tribute to club great Chris ‘Rabbit’ Heenan who passed away recently and the recognition of new life members, it was a night of celebration, pride and emotion for the blue and gold. The club has endured some tough years and have struggled to win premierships, but the energy, passion and overall love for the club was plain to see. Peter Reece Medal STAR midfielder Kyle Martin has yet again claimed the club Best and Fairest award, winning by 18 votes. The 26-year-old, who played 6 AFL games for Collingwood, is no stranger to individual accolades. He has not only won countless best and fairest awards at Noble Park, but he has also done so for Frankston in the VFL and for Collingwood’s VFL side. Martin first won the Peter Reece Medal back in 2009, at the age of 19, a remarkable achievement which raised the eyebrows of several recruiters. Now back at the club he grew up loving, the midfielder was all praise for the Bulls and be-

Clubs raring to go By Nick Creely THE West GIppsland Cricket Association kicks off on Saturday, with all teams eager to dust off the pads and step out in their whites for another cricket season. Here are the key season previews for some local clubs: MERINDA PARK will be fighting for a finals berth after finishing fourth in last year’s Premier competition. Led by Danny Diwell, the club has recruited well with local cricket legend Simon Parrott from Flinders and Sanjeev Dhankar from Yarra United. Merinda Park looms one of the sides who will be around the mark for finals, but the expectation is that they will go one step further, as their talent matches any other side in the competition. TOORADIN are set to be a new look side this season after finishing fifth in last year’s Premier competition. Led by Tom Hussey, who was the club’s leading run-scorer last season, the club will be confident they can be a genuine contender for this year’s flag. The acquisitions of Callum O’Hare, who returns to the club and Russell Lehman, add genuine star-quality to the playing group. The depth within the club is improving and the club is supremely confident they can be a major player in this year’s final series. CARLISLE PARK will be looking to take the leap and take out the District premiership this season. The Vikings are led by Travis Canavan, who the club has brought in from Kooweerup and will bolster the club’s playing stocks as well as provide a stable onfield leader. Winning premierships is the ultimate goal, but the Vikings will be looking to have a look at some of the exciting youth at their disposal. CLYDE has obtained the vital signatures of two star players, Shane White and Brett Reid from Officer. Their recruitment alone raises the expectations of the club this season, after finishing last season in fourth position. Clyde will be captain-coached by John Simpson this season as they look to raise the bar and become a genuine contender in the District competition. CRANBOURNE MEADOWS are in the middle of a rebuilding phase and are aiming to build a strong core base. The club’s District captain for 2016/'17 is Tom Smith, who has enormous upside as an on-field leader. Not much player movement around the club which is a positive in building a stable culture. Cranbourne Meadows are building the platform for future successes, but short-term pain may be on the horizon. DEVON MEADOWS is the team to beat in District this season; such is the quality of their recruitment. Led by captain-coach Ash Adams, the Panthers will possess a potent new trio of Scott Clark (Pakenham UpperToomuc), Jason Dodd (Aura Vale) and Brad Miles (Aura Vale). The team is experienced and primed for a tilt at the District premiership. CARDINIA has taken a bit of hit with some of its top-line bowlers such as Travis Welsh, Brayden Browne and Dean Henwood departing, but the club still has some sheer talent and firepower with bat and ball. Captain Neil Barfuss is a star player and Dwayne Doig is a wicket-taking machine. The expectation is nothing less than finals, but is under no illusions the Premier competition is improving each season. EMERALD finished seventh last season and the Bombers will be hoping they can take further strides in their development. The club has improved within, and are well led by A.J.
Aaron Avery will no doubt bounce back to form for Tooradin’s Premier side this season. Walker, so expectations are growing at Emerald. Some handy inclusions will ensure their Premier side is a hard team to beat. KOOWEERUP is a real team to watch this season in Premier, and have recruited smartly. The loss of some of their depth dents their hopes slightly, but new captain-coach Mark Cooper is a top-end talent and will ensure they stay around the mark for the finals. The boys at Koowee know how to win flags and make finals, and will be confident they will be around on the last day of the season. PAKENHAM is another genuine contender for this year’s Premier flag. The loss of Russell Lehman does hurt the club; however the Lions have recruited well in the form of Chris Savage (Nerrena) and Dillon Allen (Narre Warren). The Lions will be led by Dom Paynter this season as they look to go back-to-back. PAKENHAM UPPER-TOOMUC jumps up to the Premier competition after winning the flag in District. The loss of some huge names, notably
Scott Clark, will definitely hurt. They have depth; however the jump to Premier may catch up to them without some of their biggest stars. UPPER BEACONSFIELD is an interesting discussion point and it will be fascinating to see how it fairs in the Premier competition this season. Captain-coach Bathiya Perera has enjoyed a productive off-season, while a host of promising recruits would realistically see the club push themselves into finals contention. KALGIDHAR is confident it can be a force in this year’s District competition, and have worked extremely hard in rectifying areas that let them down in Sub-District last season. The club will be captained by Rupinder Singh in 2016/'17, who is a good leader, and has got some young talent who are ready to shine. NAR NAR GOON/MARYKNOLL features new captain-coach Daniel Glen from Cardinia, in what is set to see the club improve on last year. The inclusion of Dean Henwood in particular, a gun bowler from Cardinia, is massive for the club.

OFFICER is quietly confident it can be a major improver and push for finals in 2016/'17 District. Youngster Brayden McHugh will captain the club this season in an indication the direction the club wants to move in. The club has added several players, such as Daryl Hargreaves, C.J. King and Ste-
phen Alderton, but has lost two very good cricketers in Shane White and Brett Reid. AURA VALE is new to the WGCA, deciding to start afresh and rebuild its club culture. They will feature in the Sub-District competition, and are relative unknowns for this season.

Touching Chris Heenan tribute By Nick Creely NOBLE Park Football Club is saddened by the passing of ex-player and champion of the club Chris ‘Rabbit’ Heenan, 47, on 23 September, but the club honoured him in the best possible way with a touching tribute and a minute of silence at the club’s presentation night. Kellie Walden delivered a moving speech to the packed audience, talking about the journey of life and never taking things for granted. “Life is like one long continuous journey, and from the moment we get on board the train, we know we must depart. “We stop at many stations along the way, and sit and watch as different peo-
ple enter our journey. “Many of these people sit on different carriages and we will never know them. “Others will sit on the same carriage but keep their distance. “A small percentage will sit next to us. “These are the passengers that bring great joy, and show us love, honesty and understanding. “We will treasure their company and hope they are getting off at the same stop as ourselves. “For we on the train without them would make our journey miserable. “Some people leave the train earlier than we would like, and as we pull out
of the station they have departed, we can only look at the empty seat next to us. “We look out the window, remembering the conversations we shared, the love we endured and the thrill of being in each other’s company. “These memories are what we cling to and hold dear to our hearts. “At the next stop another person hops on, oblivious to the pain we are feeling. “We get to know this person and let them sit in their seat, not replacing them, but allowing us to share our memories of the previous passenger. “We continue our journey; being happier, richer and wiser from the people we have known,“ an emotional Walden said.

Great start for Cranny CRANBOURNE BOWLS THE Cranbourne ladies got off to a great start in Division 1, defeating Berwick in the opening round by two shots. Skip Shirley Venville and her team won by eight shots, while skip Cheryl Wright and her team won by one shot and skip Freda Farrall and her team went down by seven. Chairwoman of selectors Lynne Wood stated that: “We are very pleased with the first win for the season, which should set us up for the rest of the year. In all, it was a great start with good performances from all team members.” Meanwhile in Division 1 Open, Cranbourne had a 21shot victory over Hampton Park with the rink of Gerry Dudink, Graham Wood, John Stanley and Gavin Wright winning by 24 shots. INTERNATIONALLY renowned Lawn Bowls coach Lachlan Tighe who is regarded as the doyen of Australian bowls coaches visited Berwick Bowling Club last Thursday evening. As well as coaching World Bowls Champions, Tighe has coached Malaysian, Canadian, Asia Pacific, Australian and also Commonwealth Games Gold Medallists. In an effort to empower players, Tighe uses modern coaching methods to enable players to perform at their best level whether competing in pennant, club competition or at social level. Tighe asks the question, “Do you want to soar like an eagle or mix with the turkeys”. He talked about what it takes to be a champion and in his forthright and sometimes confronting manner succeeded in challenging the thinking of bowlers and their view of both practice and pennant competition.
