Skyrail is here By Alana Mitchelson SKYRAIL segments for the controversial level crossing removal works between Caulfield and Dandenong stations are to be built at a manufacturing hub in Pakenham. The immense pre-cast yard development is in the process of being erected on Kooweerup Road, just south of the Princes Freeway. Construction began in May, with notable signs of rapid development over the past month.

About 2500 concrete segments will be built at the Pakenham site that forms part of the $1.6 billion Caulfield to Dandenong Level Crossing Removal Project for an elevated rail line. Once the project is complete there will be no level crossings between Caulfield and Dandenong train stations on the Pakenham line. The Level Crossing Removal Authority (LXRA) plans to transport the locally casted 3 x 5.5 x 3.2 metre concrete segments - typically weighing about 30 tonnes - in trucks to site using

an “advanced engineering feat". Two huge gantry cranes will install the concrete segments by moving back and forth in the air, while trains continue running below to minimise disruption to commuters. The Pakenham site was chosen due to its proximity to major freeway links and suitable land availability in an industrial area close to LXRA worksites. LXRA project director Brett Summers said the casting and manufacturing of the segments in Pakenham

would support local manufacturing and transport jobs. The Caulfield to Dandenong Level Crossing Removal Project will create 2000 jobs overall during construction. “Choosing Pakenham for this precast facility will support local industry and create local jobs," Mr Summers said. “Pakenham will be the key manufacturing hub for the level crossing removals between Caulfield and Dandenong, playing a vital role in reduc-

ing congestion, improving safety and delivering more services for local passengers." Segment production will commence before the end of the year and the Gazette understands that the segments are to be built over a period of two-and-a-half years. The LXRA failed to respond to the Gazette’s request for a total costing and for information about what the pre-casting yard would be used for after manufacturing the skyrail segments.

Matt’s will of steel PAKENHAM Paralympic hero Matt Lewis is back on home turf, bringing home gold from his team’s stellar rugby defeat of the United States. The 29-year-old won gold with his team, the Steelers Wheelchair Rugby team, at the Rio Paralympics, defeating America by a single point. The team took out the nail-biting 59-58 win in double overtime. Matt’s sister Linda Lewis, who also lives in Pakenham, says she’s incredibly proud of her brother who touched down on home soil on Wednesday 21 September. The Paralympian almost died in a horrific backyard explosion in Cannons Creek in 2011. At 24, he lost fingers, both of his legs and was in an induced coma for over a month after an at-home bomb experiment went terribly wrong. After a lengthy rehabilitation process, Matt picked up a rugby ball - and the rest is history. Read the full story of Matt’s amazing journey in this week’s Pakenham Gazette.

Hotel drives charity push to raise lymphoma dollars By Alana Mitchelson THE Pakenham Hotel will host its first dinner and entertainment charity night to raise money for Lymphoma Australia.

It’s a cause that is close to manager Brendan Theobald’s heart after his mother recently passed away from cancer and his sister-in-law Melissa Baker has had a three-year battle with lymphoma. At the time of her diagnosis, Ms Baker was working full-time in the city and had two children aged six and one. “Life was busy and it all happened quite quickly,” she said. “I noticed a lump in my neck one day and within a matter of days I was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma. “There were no real symptoms aside from feeling itchy all over. “I basically thought I was looking at six months of treatment and here I am three years later on a clinical trial at Austin Hospital for an immunotherapy drug. “I couldn’t work for two-and-ahalf years.” Ms Baker, who has been in remission for almost a year, will speak about her personal journey with lymphoma at the fund-raiser evening on Friday 21 October. There will be an acoustic guitar-

ist playing live throughout a twocourse dinner with entertainment from nationally recognised comedy hypnotist Bizarre Gazzard and his support act Adam Chicken Palmer. From each ticket sale, $15 will be donated to Lymphoma Australia. “For us, there’s no money in it. As long as the venue covers its costs, I wouldn’t mind looking at doing more fund-raising events down the track,” Mr Theobald said. “We’ve got high quality acts for half the price with a portion of that money going to charity. “Come down with friends and have a good night out and a couple of laughs. It’s much more fun than sitting at home watching TV or scouring your Facebook feed.” Lymphoma is the most common form of blood cancer in Australia and the sixth most common form of cancer. About 1500 Australians die from lymphoma every year. The funds raised will go towards supporting lymphoma nurses and helping patients access the best treatment possible. Tickets cost $75 and are now available for purchase at the hotel. Bookings are essential.

Lighting up the night sky By Alana Mitchelson PAKENHAM residents will light different coloured lanterns symbolic of the way their lives have been touched by cancer to raise funds for vital research into blood cancer treatment. A blue lantern for those supporting a loved one, yellow to remember someone lost to cancer and white to recognise walkers who may be going through their own cancer journey. Amanda Papworth lost her father, Leo, last October to an incurable blood cancer - Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS) - that affected both his white and red blood cells as well as his platelets. She will be taking part in the Toomuc Reserve Light The Night walk this weekend, lighting a yellow lantern in memory of him. “He battled through it for five years. He was always at such high risk of infection and almost died from conjunctivitis one year,” Ms Papworth said. “It’s not a cancer you can see. He went to the doctor because he wasn’t feeling well and had just been feeling really tired all the time, before being diagnosed. “My dad was only able to survive so long due to the very kind people that donate their blood. When he had infections and towards the end, he was having up to 11 bags of blood a week. “Without this, he wouldn’t have even survived six months.” Family activities will begin from 5.30pm prior to the walk on Friday 30 September including face painting, a jumping castle, CFA trucks, show bags, a barbecue and homemade cupcakes. There will be raffle prizes including a bike, a family pass on Puffing Billy and four rounds of golf, with lanterns

So their research is really important for everyone and they do an amazing job.“ Football fans have also been taking part in an online auction for limited edition, framed and signed prints of the 2016 Geelong Cats and Hawthorn Hawks football teams over the past few weeks, with bids closing at 7pm on Thursday 29 September. More than 60,000 Australians are

living with blood cancers including leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma and, every day, another 35 people are diagnosed. According to the Leukaemia Foundation, every $100 raised could cover the costs of giving a family immediate emotional support and one hour of blood cancer research. Speed dating for family safety services makes a match A CHILD safety ‘speed dating’ forum will bring experts together to help vulnerable families in the growing shire. Attendees will gather around tables in groups of six to eight, meet, network and learn about other services. The Pakenham forum will focus on assisting vulnerable families at risk of drug and alcohol abuse, family violence and mental health with children aged 12 and younger. Anglicare Victoria’s CindyLee Harper said the annual event represented an average of 50 organisations, with about 90 people attending last year’s forum. “It’s a speed dating night

but not the romantic kind,” Ms Harper said. “It’s a wonderful opportunity for different agencies, businesses, community groups and individuals to network and we’ve had fantastic collaborations form as a result of past events. “Families are moving into Cardinia shire at the rate of five families a day. But there is no obvious increase in services and resources, and demand for services is rising. “We have a guest speaker at the beginning to give people the chance for an informed discussion about the case study - namely child safety - about how their own services could contribute and whether they’re ready or may

need more information.” Sectors including the health, disability, drug and alcohol, mental health, housing and education fields and people from all backgrounds were welcome to register. TO MARK its 15th anniversary, Moonlit Sanctuary Wildlife Conservation Park opened its new 20 aviary orange-bellied parrot breeding facility on Thursday 22 September. The orange-bellied parrot is one of the world’s rarest and most endangered animals. With less than 50 of the parrot species left in the world, the new aviary gives a significant boost to the captive breeding program with the facility able to house 40 birds and breed up to 100 birds each year. The specialised off-theground aviaries are designed as a quarantine facility to prevent the spread of beak and feather disease, which can affect these parrots in the wild, and feature two 12 metre long free-flight aviaries for non-breeding seasons. Zoos Victoria has contributed almost $100,000 towards the development of the new aviary with the privately owned Moonlit Sanctuary also financially supporting the construction and ongoing maintenance of the facility. Moonlit Sanctuary director Michael Johnson said the facility “helps us take a huge step towards growing the captive population of orange-bellied parrots for release into the wild”. “We are thankful to the funding provided by Zoos Victoria - this contribution and partnerships between governments, community groups, zoos, and the orange-bellied parrot recovery team is key to the survival

Moonlit Sanctuary has been a key partner in the orange-bellied parrot program since 2013 and is committed to spending $500,000 over the next 10 years to run the new breeding facility. Zoos Victoria’s Acting General Manager of Threatened Species Dr Michael Magrath said the new aviaries provided a significant boost to the captive breeding program. “Saving species is very

much a team effort and it is terrific to have Moonlit Sanctuary substantially expanding on their involvement and commit to saving this iconic bird from extinction,” Dr Magrath said. This spring, Moonlit Sanctuary will release three orange-bellied parrots from its captive-bred population at their breeding site in Melaleuca on the south coast of Tasmania. The new breeding facility features a viewing platform for visitors, an educational space to learn about the species, and a nest cam to observe the breeding behaviours of orange-bellied parrots. Moonlit Sanctuary also contributes to other threatened species recovery and breeding programs including regent honeyeaters, bush-stone curlews and spot-tailed quolls.

Train assault push A CRANBOURNE West man will fight charges after allegedly punching then pushing another man off a railway station platform and leaving him with a broken leg on the train tracks in Noble Park. Kimiora Tangatapoto, 19, faces charges including assault, recklessly causing serious injury and reckless

conduct over the incident at Yarraman station about 5.53pm on 8 April. Police told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 26 September that the victim had suffered a permanent limp as a result of the incident but were awaiting further medical records. Defence lawyer Aaron Eidelson said Tangatapoto claimed he acted

in self-defence after the victim allegedly threatened to stab him with a hypodermic needle. “There’ll be an argument if what my client says is correct - does that justify his response? “Was that reasonable and appropriate to what my client says confronted him.” Tangatapoto’s claim however could not be substantiated by police

- who did not search the victim’s bag at the time, Mr Eidelson said. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen told Mr Eidelson that police at the time “wouldn’t have a reason” to search the victim’s bag. Noting police did not object to the matter being tried summarily, Mr Vandersteen booked the hearing at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 13 December.

Deborah’s back on her bike for charity DEBORAH Geyer is proof that no-one ever forgets how to ride a bike. Ms Geyer, 53, of Doveton, recently got ‘back on the bike’ after several decades to raise money for the charitable Great Cycle Challenge in October. As part of the event, the spritely grandmother aims to ride 500 kilometres in a month to raise $1500 for children’s cancer research. She is inspired by the memory of relatives who have died from cancer, including her cousin Sean who succumbed to leukaemia at the age of seven. Ms Geyer, who was only several years older at the time, recalls visiting Sean in hospital for his birthday a month before he died. Since February, Ms Geyer has been in training for the event, cycling twice daily via trails to wildlife-rich Frog Hollow Reserve in Endeavour Hills. She needs to replicate those

20-kilometre daily trips for much of October to reach her challenge goal. However Ms Geyer said she’s already achieved something significant - improved her fitness, wellbeing and losing six-kilograms. The type-two diabetic’s blood sugars have settled, and her arthritic toe and sore neck and back are unencumbered by this form of exercise. Her investment in a $600 bike has returned with interest. “When I started this ride, I found this big hill and stopped. Now I’m flying over it. “I’m in a lot less pain because I’m active.” Ms Geyer has had just one recent spill off the bike, bogging her wheels into a shifty sand trail at Frog Hollow. MUCH discussion continues about Pauline Hanson’s recent speech in the Senate. There has been an on-going debate about who said: “Immigrants, not Australians, must adapt. Take it or leave it.” Whoever said it, like Pauline Hanson, that person is politically right. I migrated to Australia with my family because I considered Australia to be a better place. Here, I can still enjoy freedom of speech, freedom of association, freedom of religion, freedom of movement that don’t exist in many of the countries from which migrants and refugees are coming. But, if I made a mistake and don’t like to stay I’m free to leave. I have no right to impose my language, my culture and my own personal law on all other Australians. So, it is very unfair to label Pauline Hanson racist or Islamophobic. Unlike many other Australian politicians she doesn’t hesitate to call a spade a spade. The Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull touched the right chord when he addressed the United Nations Assembly on the issue of immigration. The number one priority for all Western civilizations remains national security and border protection. This reminds us of the statement he had made some time ago: “European authorities have lost control of their own security” and there is “an inability to know who is within its borders”. A magistrate who thought an ecstasy pill might weigh three grams was swiftly corrected by the accused. The man in the dock who was charged with possessing more than 700 tablets told the court the pills actually weighed 0.3 grams. “Well there you go,” the judge said - with a wry smile - to the man’s lawyer. AN ACCUSED facing a raft of theft charges made a valiant attempt to cover his tracks when questioned by police. Dandenong Magistrates’ Court was told the accused man’s fingerprints were linked to

the theft of three pairs of glasses and sunglasses valued at $1000 from a parked car. He allegedly told police at the time that another person with the “same fingerprints as mine” must have been the offender. After pleading guilty in court, he was convicted, placed on an 80-hour community work order and ordered to reimburse the victim. A FORMER Casey councillor Bob Halsall has resurfaced for council elections - in the City of Kingston. In an ad in one of the local papers, Mr Halsall introduces himself as an owner of a mattress shop at Chelsea Market. The councillor, who once infamously dropped the C-bomb twice during a Casey council meeting, promised voters he’d give them “a voice on council”.

Library over the decades By Victoria Stone-Meadows THE Casey Cardinia Library Corporation is celebrating its 20th year of operation this year, but the employees have a history with the library that predates its incorporation. The Casey Cardinia Library Corporation was gazetted on 26 September 1996 and the first day of operation was 1 October that same year. Many of the staff members have stayed on during the different incarnations of the region's libraries and they shared some wisdom and stories to celebrate the library’s birthday. Vasu has been employed by the library in one form or another for 40 years and says she wouldn’t want to be doing anything else. “I really like my workmates, they have always been companionable to work with, and I like being with books and reading books,” she said. “You can’t read all of them unfortunately.” Meredith started working at the library 25 years ago when it was located next to the old shire offices, and says the new building is a vast improvement over how it used to be. “Our air-con was overhead fans and open windows,” she said. “Cranbourne was just a county town then, and it was very much a small community library at the centre of the country town.” The library staff said there was a special way you became a real part of the community when you worked at the library. “I knew people from back then and still know the same people so had the continuity of the public and be part of their lives which I really enjoy,” she said. “You get very attached, and it’s a lovely part of our work is that we become an extension of people’s families.” Members of the community also get attached to the library and find themselves more a part of it as they age Patricia said. “One of our current staff members used to come into story times at the Cranbourne library,” she said, “Staff there all knew her and she got to know the staff; she grew up and became a shelver and a junior library officer and is now a home library

‘I stuffed up’ says accused A MAN has told a court he “stuffed up” after being arrested with suspected stolen items in the back of a car in Doveton while on a month-old community corrections order. Nicholas Dadov, 22, and a co-accused were arrested next to a Mazda utility laden with alloy and racing tyre rims, laptops, gas bottles, bags of clothing and DVDs, a pull saw and a knife under the passenger seat about 4pm on 25 September. Some of the items were allegedly stolen from an Officer address between 23-24 September, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court was told. Dadov had allegedly knocked on a front door to hawk off the items in Chestnut Grove, Doveton, with the ute and items parked outside. Dadov pleaded guilty to charges including possessing suspected stolen goods in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court

the following day, as well as to breaching a community corrections order handed down by the court on 8 August. His lawyer told the court in the day’s first hearing that “my instructions are (he thought) it was abandoned property”. The lawyer submitted for Dadov to be released on bail for sentencing with a second alleged breach and alleged theft of motor vehicle set down for 6 October. Dadov is also facing Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 10 October for disqualified driving, and a separate hearing on 19 October for theft of a motor vehicle. Magistrate Gerard Bryant, in the second hearing on 26 September, said he would not allow the bail application “dressed up” as a guilty plea “in a million Sundays”. “In the circumstances that (Dadov) has instructed for pleas of guilty in breach of a community corrections order I put him on, he’s going nowhere,” Mr Bryant said.

“I told him there would be significant ramifications if he breached the community corrections order. “I don’t think you’ve got a snowflake’s chance in hell with that.” Dadov told the magistrate: “I stuffed up. I don’t know what to say. “I’m off the drugs. I’m doing everything I can.” Mr Bryant replied: “Why then are you charged with theft of a motor vehicle, proceeds of crime and weapon offences?” Dadov said he’d “do anything to get out and be home with my family”. “That’s not going to happen today,” Mr Bryant said. “Of course not,” Dadov said. The accused asked Mr Bryant if he could have a suspended sentence, but was told that was no longer a sentencing option. Dadov is set to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 6 October.

Bus stop boy mugged by men in car A 13-YEAR-OLD boy was robbed by a man armed with a baseball bat while walking from a bus stop in Narre Warren on Thursday 22 September. The boy was waiting at a bus stop on Baringa Park Drive about 8pm when a car occupied by two men pulled up.

One of the men, armed with a baseball bat, demanded the boy hand over his mobile phone. The thief was described as Caucasian, about 180cm tall with a skinny build, had a deep voice and thick eyebrows and was wearing a black Von Zip-

A YOUNG woman has organised her first community event to raise money for a family in need, and has succeeded in reaching her fund-raising goal. Brooke Skews lost her best friend in a horror car smash in Lynbrook seven years ago, and has maintained close ties with the family since. Since the shock death of 16-year-old Riyani Lowen, mother Emma Lowen has had a rough time coming to terms with the loss. Ms Skews held a family fun day in Hampton Park to raise money to assist the Lowen family, and she says it was a huge success. “It went really well,” Ms Skews said. “The local CFA came down and that was big hit with the kids, everyone loved the music performers, Jarrod James and KidwithaKalling, they really got the crowd up and moving. “All the volunteers on the day also helped out

so much.” Ms Skews said Emma Lowen was overwhelmed by the amount of community support that was shown through all the people attending and helping organise the family fun day. “Emma was really overwhelmed with the support,” she said. “It has been a long time she has been on her own dealing with it, and she hasn’t left the house in a while, but she came out for the fun day and knew how much effort everyone put in. “Emma said it was nice to see Rianni’s friends come down with their kids and it was really nice to see her old friends, a really nice day overall.” Ms Skews said getting the day organised was a really big task, but it was all worth it in the end knowing she has helped out her friends. “I’m really relieved it is all over and I’ve never done anything like this before, so I’m really happy with how it all came together,” she said.

The Family Fun Day had heaps of activities such as potato sack races, egg and spoon races, a jumping castle, three leg races, face painting and more. While Ms Skews hasn’t collected all the fund-raising money yet, she is confident she has reached her fund-raising goal. “With all of the fund-raising that we and other businesses did, we would be at the $5000 mark or really close to it,” she said. She also said the number of local businesses that donated goods and items to the cause made a big difference. “There are so many people to thank, but I especially want to thank the local Bendigo Bank branches for their surprise fund-raising efforts and the Hampton Park Community House for all their work helping me out,” Ms Skews said. With plenty for seniors to enjoy ALL across Australia, state governments hold weeks and festivals honouring the older members of our community. While NSW has theirs in April and Queensland in August, the Victorian Seniors Week is held in glorious October weather. The event includes the Victorian Seniors Festival, an event to honour seniors in Victoria - held in October every year at various locations around the Melbourne CBD. The week-long festival includes an array of events, activities and entertainment for all seniors. The festival is organised by the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services to encourage seniors to get out there and participate in and enjoy a wide range of more than 1300 activities; all generally free or low-cost. Free and low-cost events and activities are presented across Victoria, including concerts, dances, theatre shows, celebratory morning teas, tours, a host of indoor and outdoor recreation activities and much more. The State Government provides eight days of free public transport for Victorian Seniors Card holders in metropolitan and regional Victoria for the period 2-9 October 2016 and five days of free V/Line travel between 3-6 October and on Saturday 8 October. But this festival is not contained just to the city, events can also be found all over Victoria with local councils and community groups running hundreds of events. The City of Casey’s Ageing Positively Festival runs throughout October, offering more than 100 events and activities to inspire, connect and involve residents aged 55 and over. Held each year in conjunction with the Victorian Seniors Festival, the festival is a celebration of Casey’s older residents and their ongoing contribution to the municipality.

City of Casey CEO Mike Tyler said the program will feature a great variety events, activities and information sessions throughout the month of October. “The Ageing Positively Festival provides opportunities across Casey for older residents to get

Fresh take on food needs By Victoria Stone-Meadows FOOD glorious food was the overall theme of the latest Casey Cardinia Business Breakfast held at Cranbourne Racecourse on Wednesday 28 September. Australian culinary legend Stephanie Alexander espoused the virtues of real food and the importance of engaging young people in every step of the food process. Alexander was one of two speakers at the breakfast who spoke of the importance of engaging young people in the food and agriculture business. Business representatives from across the Casey and Cardinia regions were treated to a presentation by Jan Vydra, managing director of the Australian Fresh Leaf Herbs that won the Casey Cardinia Business of the Year title. Mr Vydra told of his experiences travelling overseas while researching different forms of agriculture and how his early childhood had formed the way he runs his business. “I remember Mum asked my teachers in kinder why I wasn’t learning anything, and the teachers told her to just let me play, that’s how I act and motivate my staff in agriculture,” he said. “We are trying to take strides in innovation and show farming can be a choice. While Mr Vydra was travelling overseas as part of the Nuffield 2016 Scholar Program, he discovered the average age of farmers in many places around the world is 60+ years. “Farmers are ageing, and it is a common problem,” he said. “We can solve some of these problems with technology, but we need to engage young people in agriculture.” Stephanie Alexander echoed Mr Vydra’s sentiments about engaging young people in food and spoke of the value she has seen in the kitchen garden project that has been adopted by schools across the nation. What started as a pilot program at Collingwood College in 2001, the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation now helps 830 schools Australia wide. “The kitchen garden is more than just a way to fight against obesity,” Ms Alexander said during her presentation. “Rather than rally students to a cause, it convinces them to move away from junk food with a fun and engaging program. “There is an important differentiation there, students work in teams, their confidence and self-esteem soars, and they gain a cultural understanding based on food.”

Fitness club ready for long haul By Victoria Stone-Meadows FERNWOOD Women’s Fitness Club in Narre Warren celebrated 21 years of operation on Wednesday 21 September with special guest Lisa Curry. The fitness club celebrated with a pop up market from local businesses, special fitness classes led by Lisa Curry, showcases of their programs, a barbecue and of course a birthday cake. Fernwood Narre Warren assistant manager Paula De Graaf said everyone who attended had a great day. “We had a full house most of the day, with current and prospective members coming and going all day,” she said. “It was just fabulous.” Ms De Graaf said although the day was very busy, it was a

great opportunity to showcase all the programs and classes the club has to offer. “We had half hour versions of our classes, showcasing our timetable from tummy-hipsthigh classes to body pump and step and ended up with Lisa Curry doing a Curry Coach Workout and presentation about exercise and wellbeing,” she said. “We even had time to sneak in a bit of a Zumba party.” The pop up market was a big hit with the club members and was completely supported by local businesses. “We had lot of different things us girls enjoy,” Ms De Graaf said. “There was envy jewellery, body shop, and different things

like hire a hubby and mobile massage.” Lisa Curry was able to give specialist advice about women’s fitness and striking a balance between staying fit and loving life. “Lisa spoke about being her age and staying fit after having been at a level of elite athlete and now talking about balance of life but still being very fit and healthy and the implementation of that as we age,” Ms De Graaf said. Ms De Graaf said 21 years of operation shows how well Fernwood Narre Warren operates in the community and hopes for more great years to come. “We have a really strong base in the area; we have been here a long time and plan to stay a long time,” she said.

Art’s flow of admiration A PAINTING of black cockatoos took out the top prize at this month’s Great Art Show. Provenance Art staged the show at Nossal High School, Berwick. Paintings, drawings and sculptures were enjoyed by a steady flow of people over the weekend of 18 and 19 September. The show was opened on Friday night by Sir Gustav Nossal. The judges this year were Geoff Sargeant, a renowned local artist specialising in coloured pencil, and Sam Michelle, a Berwick painter, both award winners in their own right. The Best Painting in Show award went to Deborah Polman for her Carnaby Cockatoos which the judges praised as a “wonderfully thought out and well executed contemporary painting”. Best Oil Painting award went to Zoe Panagiotopoulos for The Guarded Heart and Best Oil for an emerging artist went to Jenni Miller for Beyond. Best Acrylic award went to Brad Trembath for Kookaburra and Best Acrylic by an Emerging Artist went to Trevor Plane for Rose N Shine. Best Watercolour award and shield went to Julie Goldspink for Red Beauty. Best Pastel award went to Julie Ricketts for Lemon and Green Glass, Best Scratchboard to Carol Gorenko for Honeyeater Heaven and Best Column of Petits went to Elizabeth Thomson. Best Multicultural Art of the World went to Lynette Armstrong for Song Lines of Culture Lorikeets. Best Work by a Student Artist award and Provenance Trophy went to Jasmine Colbert for Rocky Shore.

Silverbacks raring to go By Nick Creely THE PAKENHAM Silverbacks have clinched a play-off berth against the Monash Barbarians on 9 October at Heatherbrae Reserve in Officer. The match is to be the first of the Division 2 play-off games, with the second game being played straight after between Bendigo Dragons and North-

ern Raiders. The games start at 11am and 2.30pm respectively. Pakenham have endured a remarkable season, going undefeated with 12 wins, and will enter the game with a massive amount of confidence. The Silverbacks are looking to go back-to-back in the Division 2 Championship, after last year defeating the Monash Bar-

barians 9-6 in a toughly fought out contest. No side has been able to match the Silverbacks, who on Sunday blew away the Barbarians 63-0 in a brilliant display of gridiron in the last round of the regular season. It is set to be an exciting play-off series in both divisions, and the Silverbacks are primed for another tilt at the title.

TOM Papley is no stranger to grand finals involving the Bulldogs. He played in two of them as a teenager for his beloved Bunyip Bulldogs in the Ellinbank and District Football League in 2012 and 2013 - the first of those a premiership win as a 16-year-old. THE Casey Cardinia Athletics Club might just be the best local sporting club you’ve never heard of. Based out of the impressive track and field facility at Casey Fields, the club caters to all ages - from youngsters right through to the masters or veterans. The club provides the perfect pathway for those in the Casey and Cardinia areas wanting to continue their track and field careers beyond Little Athletics, and has all the state of the art facilities and equipment to help along that journey. The family-oriented club, affiliated with Athletics Victoria and Athletics Australia, offers regular competition over the summer and winter months against a wide range of other Victorian clubs and anyone wishing to improve their skills in any discipline has a range of coaches to call on for their expertise. The new season starts on 8 October and there’ll be three rounds at the Casey Cardinia facility at Casey Fields, along with other rounds at Frankston, Knox, and Nunawading. There will also be state championship events held in February, and nationals in March and April in Sydney. The Casey Fields facility is fully IAAF-compliant and can host both state and national events if required. It even has a state-of-the-art photo finish system up and running. The Casey Cardinia Athletics Club has the facilities, and it has the equipment - all it needs is a growing member base. Last season it boasted around 100 competing members. That number is now in the mid-40s but there’s an expected influx of members over

LONG time Pakenham Tennis Club member Jean Kelsey has been rewarded for her outstanding service and loyalty with a Life Membership on Wednesday September 21. Jean has been a member of the Pakenham Tennis Club for approximately 57 years, having started with the club in her teens. In those days, the tennis club played on private courts belonging to Don Williamson, situated where the Senior Citizens building stands today in James Street. The club moved to its present location in Anderson street in 1962 when the Shire approved the land for the tennis club to build the courts. Jean, with the help of her parents, Reg and Hazel Lansdown, helped raise funds to go towards the construction of the courts and club house. In terms of her playing ability, Jean played tennis at the highest club level - Section 1. An advantage in her game at that level was the fact she was left handed, and she was further advantaged when playing mixed doubles. After Jean had her two children, she continued to play for the club, filling in for teams when needed and often rushing around on short notice to get down to the courts. While playing for Pakenham, Jean has played over 680 midweek ladies matches and has won her fair share of premiership flags over her career. She has also been heavily involved with the junior program when both her children took up tennis. Pakenham Tennis Club treasurer Ann Molino was thrilled for Jean, citing her knowledge for the game and the love she has for her club. “It’s fantastic to have someone that obviously has stayed here this long, and enjoys her tennis with the people around her. “It’s important for us to have someone there so long that provides longevity and knowledge of history for the club as well,“ Ann said. Jean’s dedication and loyalty to Pakenham Tennis Club and her local community is admirable and her Life Membership award is a fantastic achievement.

The Casey Cardinia club is will represented at national competitions, and in no small part that can be attributed to the wide range of coaching expertise available. “The good thing is we have a specialist throws coach who looks after that side of things and we’ve got a couple of coaches who deal with sprints, hurdles and relays, and jumps,” club secretary Stuart Merrick said. “We’ve pretty much got people who cover all the different disciplines for track and field.

“We’ve got coaches that can handle training people with hammer throw, discus, shotput, javelin, all those sorts of things. Every discipline is covered. “Because it’s an open-age club - it’s not like Little Athletics - we can have people competing from the Under 14s right through to 60-plus. “It’d be nice to get a few of the older athletes involved. “It’s not just something that the junior athletes can come along and do - even the parents can get involved if they want.

“It’s pretty casual - it’s all about improving your own performance. Yes, you can measure yourself against other people but the critical thing is that making sure, from week to week, your performance is improving for that same event.” The Casey Cardinia Athletics Club also has masters competitors, and young teenage sensation Dayna Crees - a Paralympian in the making - is also a member. The Scramble is on as practice round kicks off PAKENHAM GOLF PAKENHAM held an elimination four-person Ambrose event last Saturday - played under the same conditions as this week’s upcoming Holden Scramble as an opportunity for its members to get a practice round in before Friday. The elimination format differs from normal Ambrose in that the players’ shot that is chosen to play means that person does not get to play the next shot. Having a practice round for Pak-

enham’s members means they can get their team combinations worked out, having not played an Ambrose since last year’s Holden Scramble. Anthony Kemsley, Colin Baker, Craig Clissold and Nick Gray shot a nett score of 58 5/8 to take the win. Rob Nobelius, Theo Van Roy, Matt Brown and Bill Bright came in second with net 60, while Wayne Knudsen, Gary Burgess, Michael Minogue and Paul Jamieson were in third place with a 60.5 nett. The Holden Scramble is due to be

played this coming Friday (the Grand Final Eve public holiday), with a shotgun start at noon. Entries are nearly full, so anyone who would like to play needs to act fast. This Saturday, 1 October - AFL Grand Final day - is also the day of the club’s October monthly medal. The club is due to core its greens on Thursday, 6 October and therefore has decided it is best to run the monthly medal on the best green condition possible and not two days after being cored. On Monday of last week, Barrie Seldon (19) shot a great score of 38 points to take a narrow victory in the Stableford event over Nick McQualter (5) with 37. The ball went down to 33 points.

The forecast for Wednesday scared many players off but the weather was stellar and those who did turn up to play got the opportunity to do so in beautiful sunshine. Alan Borch (25) won the competition on countback from Ben Onyeka (19) after both returned scores of 35 points. The balls went down to 33 points. Chris McConnell (12) won Friday’s event with 35 points, while Tim Sallai (17) had 38 points to win on Sunday.

Medium Peugeot writ large By Alistair Kennedy THE jostling continues among imported car makers to occupy the void that’s about to be created when local production of large passenger cars ceases over the next 12 months or so. Previously ‘medium’ cars will in future carry the mantle of large cars and are likely to attract increasing buyer interest when, or if, the current SUV bubble ever bursts and traditional passenger cars come back into fashion. Among the jostlers is Peugeot with the largest model in its range, the 508. It’s sold in sedan and station wagon format, the latter a large spacious vehicle that will suit many buyers’ needs. Indeed the wagon fits perfectly into the idea known as the ‘grand touring’ segment. Peugeot 508 has been on sale here since mid-2011 where it effectively replaced two previous models, the smaller 407 and the larger 607. It was given a mid-life update in September 2015 including some styling tweaks that have given it a bolder look although it remains conservative enough to suit its target market. Three variants are available, in increasing levels of equipment named Active, Allure and GT. The entry-level active is powered by a 1.6-litre turbopetrol while Allure and GT each have 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engines but with different levels of tune.

Model range

Peugeot 508 GT is a comfortable and energy efficient long-distance cruiser. Potential buyers should note that the GT models are only available on special order. The front of the 508 has a tall, flat bonnet above an almost vertical ‘Peugeot corporate’ grille that’s highlighted by the iconic Peugeot Lion badge. The headlamps incorporate LED elements and daytime running lights. The large rear bumper also adds to the angular appearance and the rear lights have a square, imposing look. Overall it’s a neat, unfussy design that is likely to appeal to the conservative buyer. There’s plenty of interior room

with front-wheel drive freeing up extra space in both the rear centre seat and the boot - space that’s stolen by the layout of the RWD Commodore and Falcon. The Peugeot sedan has 497 litres of boot space, expandable to 1533 litres with the rear seatbacks folded while the wagon has 612 and 1817 litres respectively. The seats are comfortable and supportive although we found them a little lower than we prefer, even when at their highest position. Peugeot is progressively upgrading its engines to meet Euro 6 requirements and the 508 GT is the latest model to get the improved fuel efficiency and CO2 emissions benefits of these standards. Power and torque are 133 kW (at 3750 rpm) and 400 Nm (at 2000 revs)

respectively. The new 2.0-litre BlueHDi engine has factory-tested fuel consumption of just 4.4 litres per 100 kilometres on the combined cycle with emissions at 114 grams per 100 kilometres. With its 72-litre fuel tank this equates to a possible 1636 km trip without refuelling. The 1.6-litre e-THP turbo-petrol is also a Euro 6 unit with outputs of 121 kW and 240 Nm, consumption of 5.6 L/100 km and emissions of 130 g/km. The 508 Allure has an older, less efficient, Euro 5 engine with less performance (120 kW and 340 Nm), higher fuel usage (5.7 L/100km) and more emissions (149 g/km). All models use a new lightweight design of Aisin six-speed automatic transmission with steering wheel mounted paddle shifters. Standard safety in both models include six airbags; enhanced ABS brakes; stability and traction control; LED daytime running lights and foglamps; blind-spot monitoring; available parallel parking space measurement and hill start assist. We did several inter-city trips in the now superseded 407 Touring diesel and would have no hesitation in doing the same in the new 508 GT, especially with the claimed ability to travel, for example, from Sydney to Adelaide without refuelling.
