Waves of strength By Hollie Harris ONE Wave is committed to bringing awareness to all forms of mental challenges and has launched an inspiring and effective program combining the healing benefits of surfing with recovery. In addition to the regular weekly Fluoro Friday surfing sessions, where members of the community dress in fluoro gear and hit the waves to raise awareness about the stigma surrounding mental illnesses, One Wave has now launched a surf pro-

gram for sufferers of mental illness. Founder Joel Pilgrim created the organisation with a view to combating mental illness by using ocean therapy and believes that learning to surf in a group setting has invaluable benefits. Joel is also a mental health manager and an occupational therapist who is passsionate about the new learning to surf program launched in Noosa this week, which has been highly successful already in Bondi, Newcastle and the Gold Coast.

The eight-week program is designed for people who are struggling with their mental health and are ready to take that step into an environment which offers support, knowledge and tools for recovery. The program has demonstrated that learning to surf provides effective tools and benefits to those suffering from all forms of mental challenges and that bringing people together into a group setting creates a much-needed sense of community to people who may be feeling isolated. The group meets every Wednes-

day morning and the goal is to learn new strategies to cope and work through the challenges and rocky moments with a supportive network behind you, while having fun and gaining confidence. QUEENSLANDERS now have more time to have their say on the Palaszczuk Government’s vision for the future management of Queensland’s fisheries. Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries Leanne Donaldson has announced the public consultation period on the Green Paper on Fisheries Management Reform in Queensland has been extended from 10 to 12 weeks. “Based on the ongoing level of interest and community feedback on the Green Paper, public comment will now be open for an extra two weeks and close on 14 October 2016,” Minister Donaldson said. “I have listened to calls from Shane King, the Member for Kallangur and other MPs including the Members for Lytton, Mackay, Redcliffe, Keppel, Gladstone, Barron River and Maryborough, who highlighted strong community interest in the Green Paper and lobbied on behalf of their constituents for more time to submit feedback. “There has already been a tremendous response and I would like to thank all those who have taken the time to make a submission. “The Green Paper was released in July and puts forward a possible framework to manage Queensland’s wild harvest fisheries into the future. “The government is committed to ensuring Queensland’s fisheries resources are managed in a sustainable and responsible manner. These resources are owned by all Queenslanders and I encourage everyone to have their say while the consultation period is open. “People across all sectors have already provided valuable feedback, with more than 4000 responses received, including 700 online surveys, 30 written submissions and over 3,300 emails. “Officers from the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries have also met with more than 200 individuals across the state." The Green Paper has 10 key proposals for reform which represent the most significant change to fisheries management in more than 20 years. The Green Paper is available for public comment until 14 October 2016 and can be viewed at www.daf.qld.gov.au or call 13 25 23.

IT WAS a sunny Thursday morning on 25 August and Ben Lorentson was getting ready to catch some waves at Coolum Beach with his mates. At about 6.45am Ben paddled out past the breakers and what started as a great day in the surf quickly turned into a lifesaving mission for the 11-yearold. The Nipper from Noosa Heads Surf Club said he saw a woman struggling to keep her head above water so he quickly sprang into action. “As I was paddling back out I saw a lady struggling to keep her head above water. She was stuck in a gutter,” he said. Ben said the swimmer, known as Amy, refused his help at first and then accepted his offer to rest on his board. “I let her borrow my board so she could catch her breath,” he said. “I asked her if she wanted me to paddle her in and she said yes, if that’s okay with you. Because my board is 5 foot long I decided to give her my board. I took off my leg rope and swam alongside her back to shore. “She asked me if I was a lifeguard because I was so calm. I told her I had done Nippers. “What I did I would do for anybody. I have the skills to save people and I am so grateful to Nippers for giving me these skills.” Ben started Nippers at age 6 with a dream to be a professional ironman, but years later he took up surfing as his dad pushed him onto the waves in the surf each weekend. “It was here that my surfing addiction began,” he said. Rather than giving up Nippers, Ben switched his focus from paddleboards to surfboards. “The ocean is my happy place, my home and my playground,” he said. “I believe we have a responsibility to help anyone in trouble in the water. Nippers gave me these skills to save lives.” Ben was congratulated for his rescue and acknowledged with a special award from the Noosa Heads Surf Lifesaving Club presented at the club’s biannual sponsorship breakfast on Friday, 23 September.

Food drive is catching on NOOSA Civic Shopping Centre has teamed up with food rescue group REAP to create The Little Community Pantry, a food drive to help those in need all year round. The food drive encourages the donation of non-perishable food items at a central collection point in the centre for distribution locally to those in need. Delivered in partnership with REAP’s Sunshine Coast chapter, the initiative encourages people to contribute to the Little Community Pantry by either collecting an extra food item during shopping or donating surplus unopened food items from home. Noosa Civic Shopping Centre manager Brian Turner said it was great to see the new initiative already gaining strong support. “Since installing The Little Community Pantry in the centre last week, we’ve received a lot of positive feedback and even some donations already from customers. We think this is something our community will really get on board with,” he said. An extension of leading food rescue organisation OzHarvest, REAP was created in 2011 as a regional

TIME is running out to register for the 2016 BIC SUP Paddle in Pink event that will turn Noosa Sound into a sea of pink this October. The event will raise funds for breast cancer research and support services, but all participants must register online before the big day on Sunday 16 October. Event organisers said entries were filling fast with participants travelling from as far as Toowomba, the Gold Coast and even Melbourne to take part in the day. Now in its second year, former Noosa Councillor Sandy Bolton will return as patron for the event and organisers expect more than 500 paddlers to take part. Participants can bring a canoe, kayak, stand up paddle board, surfboard or anything that will float and dress in pink for the day, with great prizes for the best dressed including a $2000 paddle board package from event sponsor BIC SUP. Already local businesses are joining the paddle with over 40 staff members from Lorna Jane taking on the challenge, as well as local politicians including Member for Noosa Glen Elmes, Noosa Mayor Tony Wellington and councillor Jess Glasgow who will all be on hand to lend their support to the day. Illegal campers run riot By Jolene Ogle RESIDENTS living near the former Noosa Heads Bowls Club site are tired of the late night parties and illegal campers plaguing the area. A local resident, who asked to remain anonymous, said they are constantly kept awake at night by the noise from drunken parties on the former bowls site. Another resident said it’s common for up to five camper vans to park in the bowls site’s carpark for days at a time and dump rubbish when they leave. A visit to the site on Monday, 26 September, showed the extent of the damage to the former bowls club building which is now covered in graffiti, and the greens were strewn with litter from broken glass scattered on the paths, to empty alcohol bottles and even a mattress that had been burnt. Noosa Council said local law officers regularly patrol public areas including council car parks and streets near beaches to “remind self-drive tourists that our local laws prohibit camping in these locations”, but the former bowls site is out of reach. “Council’s jurisdiction doesn’t extend to private property, however. We simply don’t have the legislative power to take action on privately owned land with respect to parking laws. So we refer to police any complaints about illegal camping on private land,” Local Laws co-ordinator Phil Amson said. “This is just what we’ve done following complaints about people camping in the car park of the former bowls club site at Noosa Junction.

The once lively club is now covered in graffiti and any exposed windows have been broken. We have informed police and we have also contacted the owner. “Thankfully the majority of selfdrive visitors make use of Noosa’s designated camping sites, most of which offer toilet and shower facilities.” Mr Amson said despite patrols, there will always be a few people who attempt to camp for free in public areas. “I would remind them that it is illegal to do so and that Council may issue fines, particularly if they leave behind litter or disturb nearby resi-

dents,” he said. The former bowls club at Noosa Junction is owned by Coles, and Council confirmed they are still in discussions with the developer to discuss options for the site’s future. After a 45-year history, the last game of bowls was played on the site on Saturday, 2 May 2015, and the site has since lain dormant, boarded up while its future is considered. Residents are encouraged to report illegal camping by calling 5329 6500.

Kids take to tourism A GROUP of Sunshine Coast students has come one step closer to gaining experience in the tourism industry, thanks to completing Tourism Noosa’s Welcome to Noosa program. Some 27 tourism and hospitality students from Sunshine Beach State High School, 25 students from Burnside State High School and 46 students from Maroochydore State High School have all recently completed the Welcome to Noosa program and have received their certificate of recognition. The Welcome to Noosa course is an online training program that provides basic information on Noosa - why the region is so special, its history, key things to do in Noosa, information on the Noosa Biosphere and more, as well as providing great customer service strategies and information on workplace health and safety. On completion of the course, participants receive a certificate and a Welcome to Noosa name badge. Tourism Noosa acting CEO Louise Terry said over 1800 people had completed the course to date and more and more businesses were getting behind the program. “It is particularly great to see schools and students get involved and this can provide an advantage when looking for employment,” she said. Burnside State High School teacher Meredith Exelby said the students were very keen to participate and complete the Welcome to Noosa program because it broadened their knowledge of an area they had rarely visited or knew little about. “The Welcome to Noosa program has been integrated into their studies in tourism and is now a source of information for their work placements and assessment tasks,” she said.

Sunshine Beach State High School teacher Robert Flint said he found the material to be a great introduction to the tourism industry and the skills gained through the course were highly relevant to a wide range of customer services positions, not just the tourism industry. “I was so impressed by the quality of this course I have added it to the tourism program I teach,” he said. “Being new to the Noosa area, I learned a great deal about the region and the attractions and activities avail-

able through the Welcome to Noosa course and have taken the opportunity to experience some of them for myself. “In addition, the Noosa Eco-Check course offered a great overview of environmentally sustainable work practices. INBRIEF Tragic end to holiday A 66-YEAR-OLD tourist from the USA had been found dead at the bottom of Mount Coolum after he was reported missing on Thursday, 22 September. Gregory Osborne, 66, was on holidays in Australia with his partner, but was reported missing on Thursday morning after he failed to return to their Marcoola apartment following a short walk. Police appealed to the public for assistance and a call to Crime Stoppers led police to search Mount Coolum, after a caller reported seeing Mr Osborn at the top of the mountain at about 10am that day. Police and around 30 SES personnel searched the Mount Coolum area with the assistance of helicopter support from the air that was able to use thermal imaging to search dense bushland. Mr Osborne’s body was found at the base of the southern face of the mountain at about 8.15am on Sunday 25 September. Police believe Mr Osborne may have fallen while walking the 208-metre summit and are treating his death as an accidental fall.

Workshop for artists NOOSA Council is offering artists who are starting in business a chance to learn from arts industry guru Stephen Clark in

the ‘Set Up and Run Your Arts Business’ workshop. This day-long workshop provides practical steps for artists just starting or in the early stages of their creative business. Council Cultural Development Officer Belinda Simonsen said the workshop was part of Council’s Grow Your Arts program. “Noosa has so many great artists and we really want to help them develop their business smarts,” she said. “The workshop will include an overview of the arts business world as well as look at different business models. DEPUTY Leader of the Nationals and Minister for Regional Development Fiona Nash was in Noosa on Friday to meet with mayor Tony Wellington to discuss council’s new Peregian Beach digital hub project. Councillor Wellington said it was a terrific opportunity to introduce Senator Nash to the project, on site at Peregian Beach. “This initiative will provide ongoing benefits to our region, and we are

hopeful we may be able to garner the Federal Government’s support,” Cr Wellington said. “The new Building Better Regions Fund is one such possibility. It allows smaller councils like Noosa Council to enjoy opportunities that may otherwise be overtaken by the clamour from big city councils.” Council’s community services director Alan ‘Fox’ Rogers and council had already heard from 14 compa-

nies, both from the local area and around southeast Queensland, that were interested in being part of the new hub. With its high-speed internet, proximity to the airport and other regional centres and the fact it’s already home to successful digital entrepreneurs, Peregian Beach is the ideal location. A digital hub has several anchor tenants, but is managed and organised to bring people, information and

ideas together to produce strategic results. “The Rufous Street hub will provide high-tech facilities and services, meeting rooms, and shared work and event spaces. It will help develop new ventures, nurture collaborative projects and train tomorrow’s entrepreneurs,” Mr Rogers said. Council has set aside $1.5 million to build the hub in its 2016/'17 budget and will soon invite tenders for

design and construction of stage one. “While we are still waiting for the guidelines to be released, we are hoping that our exciting Peregian digital hub project will fit the bill for support under the Building Better Regions Fund,” Cr Wellington said. “The ever expanding Noosa Tigers is arguably one of the best AFL facilities in Queensland and now with the help of a Gambling Community Benefit Fund grant and the power of the sun, the Club is well placed to support future growth. “Investing in solar energy will significantly reduce the Club’s ever increasing operating costs, meaning

more money can be invested on initiatives that deliver community outcomes and improve the wellbeing of their members. “The Tigers have been an integral part of the Noosa community since 1970, and have a membership base of nearly 1000. Their competition spans from Under 6 to seniors and keeps all ages involved, physically active and

engaged in community life. “Not for profit groups such as the Tigers rely heavily on the work of volunteers and government grants to remain viable. The cost of electricity can be crippling so turning to a renewable energy source is not only imperative for financial survival but important for the future sustainability of our precious environment.

Simply the best, by design THREE students from the University of the Sunshine Coast have claimed top prizes in a 60-hour international game design competition. Doctor of Creative Arts student Alayna Cole and Serious Games students Cailean Congedo and David Page outperformed more than 100 other developers from around the world during the Serenity Forge Game Jam, which saw participants develop and submit original games over the course of one weekend. Alayna, who is also a sessional academic at USC, won the Jury Award for her interactive art installation game ‘Enthymema’, while David and Cailean took out the peer-voted Audience Award for ‘It’s Okay’. Based around the jam’s theme of health, ‘It’s Okay’ sees players follow Cailean’s own experiences following the death of his mother, with the aim of helping others cope with the loss of loved ones. “David and I didn’t dance around the issue of grief in this game,” Cailean said. “It was a very real and personal thing, and I think that’s why it was successful. “I think games, perhaps more than other types of media, can create empathy and sympathy. The player isn’t just hearing about a tough or traumatic experience, they are actively engaging with it. “We submitted the game literally one minute before the deadline, so it was fantastic to have won one of the major awards.” Linking the physical world with a computer-based experience, Alayna’s game asked participants to draw

fantastic to receive the award, but what meant even more was the feedback from people who played it saying that it had made a positive difference to them.” David and Cailean, who are both in their first year of USC’s new Bachelor of Serious Games, now plan to work together on more games projects. PUT on some gloves and grab a plastic bag - it’s time for the Surfrider Foundation Double Island Clean-up from 7 October. The award-winning, biannual event cleans rubbish and debris from Noosa River to Double Island Point and through to Rainbow Beach with free camping and fourwheel drive access for all volunteers over the weekend. Event organisers said it’s common to collect more than two tonnes of rubbish and marine debris from the beach and dunes during the clean-up, but the good news is the plastic

pollution will be recycled into furniture. All recycleable rubbish collected is sent for recycling and event organisers record the finding through an international database. Volunteers can win a share in over $3500 worth of prizes and the traditional owners from Kabi Kabi will join the group for a cultural awareness and community engagement workshop. To celebrate the group’s efforts there will be a free barbecue and live music by the campfire on the Saturday afternoon.

“It’s a win-win for everyone, but most importantly for our oceans, beaches and all biomass,” event organisers said. “Everyone is welcome. Bring your family and friends and help us spread the word. Dilli Village also provides accommodation and access to field

study sites for primary and secondary school groups. Originally a sand mining camp, Dilli Village was managed by the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service before being relinquished to USC in 2000. The most recent upgrades at the centre include new catering facilities, extensions to the main communal building, bunk house refurbishments and IT initiatives.

PLANNING is underway for an exciting expansion of the University of the Sunshine Coast’s Research and Learning Centre on Fraser Island. USC Vice-Chancellor Professor Greg Hill said the Fraser Island Research and Learning Centre at Dilli Village, 24km north of Hook Point on the eastern side of the island, was ideally located for use by the University and the Fraser Coast region. Professor Hill said USC was investigating funding opportunities for an interpretative cultural centre, a new teaching space and laboratories at the centre. “Very few universities have the privilege of operating a field station in a UNESCO World Heritage site,” he said. “As a university, we are embracing the opportunities provided by this fantastic centre in an area globally recognised for its outstanding geological evolution, rich ecological and biological diversity and exceptional natural beauty. “We are planning to use this very special place as a venue to inspire our next generations.” Professor Hill said the centre was generating exciting research, international collaborations, and exceptional field study experiences for students. Since the start of this year, hundreds of researchers, teaching staff and students have visited Dilli Village, more than doubling the number of visitor nights from the previous year. Professor Hill said education activities included field studies for a range of courses from Animal Ecolo-

New-look toilets for school holidays THE Noosa Heads Surf Club public toilets have reopened with a fresh new fit-out in time for the September school holidays. The five-week renovation a joint partnership of council and the Hastings Street Association - has delivered new cubicles, two new ambulant toilets, new drainage system and brighter colour scheme.

Work crews renewed wall and floor tiles, partitions, waterproofing and electrics during the five-week revamp. Noosa Council facility officer Ian Pearce said the principal contractor and the subcontractors worked extremely hard on the project to ensure the work was completed on time ready for the September holidays.

“Hopefully, the amenities will stay bright, clean and be of benefit to the community for many years to come,” he said. Mr Pearce thanked the Hastings Street Association for its support of the project. “Council also appreciates beachgoers’ patience while the toilets were closed to allow for work to take place,” he said.

Paper stars, real result LOCALS have been busy weaving 10,000 paper stars for the global One Million Stars to End Violence installation that will become part of the worldwide initiative to raise awareness of violence against women. One Million Stars founder Maryann Talia Pau will visit Noosa for the launch of the installation by the Sunshine Coast Star Weave community who will display their 10,000 handmade stars at the Noosa Civic Shopping Centre for three weeks from 4 October. Maryann is a practising weaver, artist and designer and she will hold a free star weaving workshop at the Noosa Civic Centre on Wednesday 5 October following the official launch of the installation at 10.30am. Born in Apia, Samoa, Maryann Talia Pau grew up in New Zealand and has recently moved to Brisbane with her family after developing her art and work in Melbourne. “When I weave, whether it’s with materials, words or ideas, I imagine my ancestors - their humour, wisdom and mischief and how this can inform my identity as an Australian with roots in Samoa,” she said. With these values, Maryann has inspired thousands of people worldwide to contribute to the One Million Stars project and to remind everyone they can do something about violence and to find a collective voice to speak out against violence. Stars from all over the world will come together in one spectacular installation at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018). Hospice meeting THE Katie Rose Hospice Committee have announced a special general meeting that will be held on Saturday 8 October at the Big Pineapple Meeting Room. Committee spokesperson Carol Raye said the committee of former volunteers hold fears their voice won’t be heard at the meeting where they hope to hold a vote of no confidence to force the current board to resign. In a petition on Change.org with more than 1400 signatures, the committee said the volunteers had lost confidence in the board and call for them to voluntarily stand down. The committee said if the vote of no confidence is successful they plan to install a caretaker management team who will begin the recruitment of a new board. “The caretaker management team will be accountable, open and transparent and request authorisation from the financial members to proceed with the recruitment of the right ‘skill set’ of board members and will ensure Katie Rose Cottage is reopened,” the petition said. “The Katie Rose Cottage committee can and will return the model of operation to more closely reflect the model implemented by the original co-founders and will endeavour to have the Hospice open again in a matter of weeks.” Sunshine Hospice chair Dr Frank Lewins has previously said the board will not stand down.

Eyes wide open for swoop THE dreaded breeding season has started and Council is warning residents to watch out for swooping magpies this spring. Noosa Council principal environment officer Peter Milne said most magpies do not attack, but during breeding season some individual birds can become aggressive in defending their nest. To help residents be aware of swooping birds, Council has put up signage in areas where the public have reported swooping magpies. As the breeding season lasts several weeks, the best way is to avoid walking or cycling through these areas until breeding is finished. If you must walk or cycle

near magpie nests there are some simple precautions you can take: Travel in groups, Wear a hat and sunglasses or hold an umbrella over your head, To avoid the risk of falling, dismount from a bike and walk quickly through the area, Attach cable ties to bike helmets to distract the birds when riding. â€œCouncil encourages residents to learn to live with magpies. In some unusual instances we may have to call in a contractor to remove the bird,â€? Mr Milne said. For further information or to report a swooping magpie contact Council on 5329 6500.

Market grows after contracting Brisbane’s unit market fell just a fraction, 0.2 per cent, to $440,000 for the quarter. However, the annual median sale price grew 0.3 per cent compared with June 2015, to $441,300, and this is 7.6 per cent greater than five years ago.

THE property market in the southeast corner of Queensland returned to positive territory this quarter, following last quarter’s contraction, and the Brisbane LGA median house price has grown 1.3 per cent to a new high of $635,000, the highest this has been in history.

The Gold Coast powered to a new median house sale price of $580,156, representing quarterly growth of 3.6 per cent. The annual median sale price, of $560,000 is 6.7 per cent higher than 12 months ago and 14.9 per cent higher than five years ago, establishing the Gold Coast as one of the best performers in the state.

Finance risk and mortgage stress MORE than two-thirds (67.2 per cent) of owner-occupied mortgages are now held by households with two incomes, presenting some problems if one decides to either drop out of the workforce or becomes unemployed.

These are some of the findings from the latest Roy Morgan ‘State of the Nation-Spotlight on Finance Risk’ report. The data is from Roy Morgan’s Single Source survey of more than 500,000 interviews over the last decade.

Overall, some 9.3 per cent of dual-income households are classified as ‘at risk’ of mortgage stress but if even the non-main earner drops out of the workforce, Roy Morgan estimates some 34.8 per cent will be at risk of mortgage stress.

Unit approvals soar undeterred DESPITE repeated warnings around apartment oversupply and settlement risk, the number of dwellings being approved for construction across the capital cities remains unquestionably strong, according to Core Logic RP Data. In July 2016, there were 17,380 capital city dwelling approvals which was the highest number of approvals since October 2015. It was also the third highest monthly number of capital city dwelling approvals on record. Despite a recent slowdown in capital city dwelling approvals, there was a substantial rebound in July 2016. Core Logic data analyst Cameron Kusher said looking at the split between houses and units over the month, there were 6482 houses and 10,898 units approved for construction across the combined capital cities. “There have now been more units approved for construction than houses across the combined capital cities for 22 consecutive months. Over the 12 months to July 2016, 57.9 per cent of all capital city dwelling approvals were for units,” he said. According to the data, over the past year, there have been 76,356 capital city houses and 104,835 capital city units approved for

construction. In each of: Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Canberra there have been more units than houses approved for construction over the past year. Sydney - there were 54,667 dwelling approvals over the past year which is 7.3 per cent higher than the previous year. This figure comprised 16,360 house approvals (+3.2 per cent yoy) and 38,307 unit approvals (+9.1 per cent yoy). Melbourne - over the year to July 2016 there were 57,428 dwellings approvals which was -0.2 per cent lower over the year. A total of 25,880 of these approvals were for houses and 31,548 were units, with the year-on-year changes recorded at +11.2 per cent and -7.9 per cent respectively. Brisbane - The 30,901 dwelling approvals over the past year consisted of 11,210 houses and 19,691 units. Overall approvals are 4.0 per cent higher over the year with house approvals -1.4 per cent lower and unit approvals 7.4 per cent higher. Mr Kusher said despite policy makers and analysts (including CoreLogic) voicing concerns about the level of housing construction currently underway, particularly for units, approvals in capital cities generally remained unquestionably strong.

I often get asked by prospective landlords if they should rent out their investment property furnished or unfurnished. The answer will change depending on property type, length of lease and what your investment goals and objectives are. An important thing to remember about renting your property fully furnished is that you are responsible to ensure that all of the inventory remains in good working condition. This basically means any item in the house will need to be repaired if it stops working which could become quite expensive especially if the furniture, electrical items and whitegoods are ageing. Holiday rentals are an easy one. These properties should always be fully furnished as holiday makers expect everything to be in place when they arrive including kitchenware. Bedroom and bathroom linen do not always need to be included depending on the type of holiday property.

Short term permanent rentals generally suit a furnished property as the lease length is around three or four months. These properties are often owned by landlords that are planning on returning back to their home.
