First class docs By Alana Mitchelson PAKENHAM students will have regular free access to a doctor and healthcare services on school grounds as part of a State Government program. Pakenham Secondary College has been identified as one of 100 pilot schools across Victoria to take part in the inaugural Doctors in Secondary Schools initiative. General Practitioners (GPs) will visit the school as often as once a week, with students able to seek referrals to specialists for the help they need before it affects their studies. One-quarter of the pilot schools are located in Melbourne’s growth areas and urban fringe to assist in meeting the demand for services created by unprecedented population growth. Pakenham Secondary principal Ray Squires welcomed the funding as an opportunity to expand the support offered to students, and to help ease the load on parents and carers. “A student’s good health is critical to their learning," Mr Squires said. “It is terrific to be able to expand the types of supports available to students to enhance their well-being. “Having a GP at school working in conjunction with other available support services will offer an extended and complementary level of care for families and the community. Details of the program are still to be released, but we trust the result will be a positive move.” Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews said healthy students learned better, stayed in school longer and achieved more. “We know that young people - particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds - are the least likely to see a GP," Mr Andrews said. “So putting doctors in schools will make sure these kids have the access to healthcare they need.” Member for Eastern Victoria Region Daniel Mulino said the program would reduce the pressure on work-

The Andrews Labor Government provided $43.8 million for Doctors in Secondary Schools in the Victorian Budget 2016/'17. This would include $25.8 million for staff and operational costs, and $18 million to build consul-

The first 20 schools would receive the funding from Term 1 2017, with a further 40 in Term 3 and another 40 by Term 1 2018. The order of the roll-out is still being finalised, and Pakenham Secondary was yet to receive a timeline.

The Gazette does it again IT’S official! The PakenhamBerwick Gazette is again Australia’s best community newspaper. The Gazette won the Community Newspapers of Australia award for the Best Newspaper under 30,000 circulation at the Southern Division awards presentation at the Langham Hotel in Melbourne on Friday 2 September. It then took out the national award after the Northern Division awards presentation in Sydney on Tuesday 6 September. of the struggles people face and their stories.” The sessions are run by volunteers, many of them retired school teachers. Grow house bust jail term A MAN busted over a highlysophisticated commercial cannabis growing operation in Pakenham during a property housing inspection has been sentenced to jail. Van Tran, 21, pleaded guilty to cultivating more than 70 kilograms of marijuana in the Hound Court, Pakenham home in November last year. He was sentenced to 15 months’ jail, in the County Court of Victoria in July. Police raided the home after getting a tip-off from the property manager. During an inspection of the home, the managing agent found six rooms filled with hy-

droponically-grown cannabis. An automatic watering system and intense lighting had been installed into the rooms protected by changed locks, the court heard. Police raided the home early on 11 November, uncovering 188 plants and loose cannabis leaves weighing 73.1 kilograms. Tran was arrested and taken

in for questioning at Pakenham police station. He told police he was also promised $6000 to mind another crop growing in a Springvale home. Tran, who moved to Australia from Vietnam in 2013, has already served half of his jail sentence. At the time of the raid, Cardinia Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Leading Senior Constable Trudy Neylan confirmed the busted crop house was linked to a separate Vietnamese-led cannabis operation uncovered in Pakenham a week earlier. Police detected more than 150 plants from a home in Salvia Avenue, Pakenham on 6 November.

NEWLY arrived refugees and migrants in Pakenham struggling with the language will soon be able to seek support at a free conversational English session. The weekly class will step participants through basic English phrases aimed at helping people from different cultures settle in to everyday activities such as shopping, using public transport, making appointments and social conversation. Class co-ordinator Sara Heras has experienced firsthand the challenges of culture shock and adjusting to a new community. Ms Heras and her family escaped conflict in Afghanistan and moved to Australia in 2009. She speaks five languages, held a senior role at the United Nations for 10 years and worked as a teacher for more than three decades. But despite Ms Heras’ qualifications, her experience was not recognised in Australia. Her husband had been a surgeon in Afghanistan but was unable to operate in Melbourne. “I was very sad to realised that my qualifications were not recognised here. I lost my family, my job... everything,” she said. “There was a lot of grief, and it’s taken courage for me and my kids to re-do courses in Australia to make a meaningful life for our family.” CatholicCare Gippsland family and relationships program manager Mark Tanti said the session would help participants build confidence, make new

Call to ‘keep an eye out’ By Cam Lucadou-Wells IT’S hard to imagine a certain soap opera’s ex-stickybeak tangling with the Apex Gang, but residents were urged to find “that piece of Mrs Mangel in you” at a 400-strong crime prevention gathering in Narre Warren. What emergency services opposition spokesman Brad Battin meant was that residents should keep an eye out for each other. It was the best form of surveillance, he told the grassroots Casey Crime Prevention Gathering at Sweeney Reserve on 10 September. “Stop using the door inside your garage and make sure you know the neighbours in your street. “Keep your curtains open and keep an eye out on the street.” A resident later bailed up Mr Battin about the need for residents to be armed with guns to protect themselves from burgling gangs. “If we start shooting, they’re not going to come back.” Mr Battin replied: “It didn’t work in America. I have a friend who is a policeman over there. He says the best thing we’ve got here is there are no guns.” Mr Battin said despite three local burglaries, a regular street barbecue helped him and his neighbours feel safer. He noted Casey had two less fulltime equivalent police despite its population growing 10,000 in the past 12 months and just one divisional van on night-shift. It “sends a very bad message to offenders”, but residents could still “go a long way” to protect themselves, he said. The crowd gave up their Saturday afternoon and ignored the lure of foot-

Event organiser Andrew Hartley had been recently traumatised after his Narre Warren home was invaded by a carload of burglars as his children slept inside. Mr Hartley told the gathering he wanted the community to come together to “stop this scourge”. “I may be either idealistic or naive, but as a community I’d like to see us looking out for each other,” he said to the applause of the crowd.

Having just survived a heart attack, Ms Van Den Berg shudders to think how she’d react in such a situation. The spate of break-ins had prompted her and her husband Brian Millgate to install shutters on all their windows, and to dead-lock their doors at all times. She’d like to see a revival of a Neighbourhood Watch-like movement in her street. “Community participation is very important. If we band together and look out for each other, we can do wonders.

Drive-in crime By Georgia Westgarth WESTFIELD Fountain Gate shopping centre is becoming as easy target for car thieves and brazen robbers. The centre includes more than 6000 car spaces and is being targeted regularly, as Officer resident Sandie Dunston found out. “I parked my car in one of the same spots I always do and didn’t expect it to be gone,” Sandie said. Her 1999 Nissan Pulsar was broken into and stolen on Tuesday 6 September between, 9.30am and 1pm at Westfield Fountain Gate. Cafe manager Sandie said this isn’t the first time her car has been broken into at the Narre Warren shopping hub. “I’m really scared now,” she said. “My car was broken into with scissors about a year ago, at around 8pm at Fountain Gate, but wasn’t stolen. “A bit of the scissors was found in the ignition - I’ve been told my model of car is an easy

target for thieves and I want a new car after all of this.” The 26-year-old alerted security who called police and Sandie’s Nissan was found in Mulgrave about 3am on Wednesday 7 September. More recently a woman was assaulted in the centre car park on the way back to her car. The man ran pass the female victim and tried to grab her phone out of her hand about 5pm on Saturday 10 September. Detective Senior Sergeant Rob Clark said the woman held onto the phone but the man attacked again. “The male demanded the phone and tried to grab it again and a second male appeared and blocked the woman from getting away,” Sen Sgt Clark said. “She eventually gave up grip of the phone and the two males left the scene with the mobile.” The male perpetrators were described as teenagers and African in appearance. The first attacker was described as average height and build and wearing an orange T-

shirt, with short black hair. Police were called and attended the scene. Westfield Fountain Gate’s Julia Clarke from Scentre Group Corporate Affairs said the car park is managed by security. “The centre management team works closely with police in the interest of maintaining the safety and security of shoppers, retailers and staff,” Ms Clarke said. But that doesn’t ease Sandie’s angst. “I don’t feel comfortable even driving someone else’s car around Fountain Gate,” Sandie said. Sen Sgt Clark from the Narre Warren Police Station said he wants everyone to “look, lock, leave,” when walking to and from their parked cars. “Westfield Fountain Gate is not specifically being targeted, however shopping centre car parks are a common place for car thieves to target,” Sen Sgt Clark said. “I haven’t noticed an influx at Fountain Gate.”

Threatened with knife following him. That person was described as a slim male, of dark colouring and around 178 centimetres tall and wearing a grey hoodie and dark pants, with a Middle Eastern accent. The offender asked to borrow the victim’s phone, when the victim noticed a second male, wearing a dark hoodie and purple pants.

The second male tried to block the path of the victim and when he tried to run away he was caught, punched and kicked to the ground. A third offender appeared at this point, armed with a knife. The victim’s phone and watch was stolen and the three perpetrators left the scene and were last seen walking towards Berwick.

AS A criminologist holding a masters degree in criminology and criminal justice, as well as having a young family, I am concerned with what appears to be an increase in crime in the City of Casey area. I have always been a supporter of the criminological theory introduced by Wilson and Kelling in 1982 known as the broken window theory. This theory was the motivation for the gettough approach used by the New York mayor in 1990s. The theory in its most basic description is that if there is a broken window and it does not get repaired, then it encourages further windows to be broken and subsequently more serious criminal activity. Saying this, it concerns me with the increase in violent offences such as carjackings in the City of Casey. The prevalence of violence in a community can influence an increase in social disorder. Increasing police numbers, police presence and patrols promotes an environment of order and lawfulness, preventing more serious crimes and ensuring our friendly and thriving community remains a safe and respectful place to live. I AM writing to commend the council on the excellent refurbishment of the Tooradin foreshore. I was there on Sunday with my three children and we thoroughly enjoyed the new park. One concern I do have, however, is the lack of fencing around the playground. Although it is partly fenced off, the fact that it isn’t fully fenced off with perhaps a couple of gates concerns me from a safety point of view. I understand this was probably done with the idea of a relaxing open environment around the park, barbecue area and water but I know from having a very energetic water loving toddler that this does present with some dangers and there are some very easy escape routes should you take your eye off them for just a split second. I was wondering if the council might consider continuing the fence all the way around. I know it might be annoying to have to open and close the gate constantly but I would put up with this rather than risk a child wondering off towards the nearby water, mangroves and road. A fence would in no way take away the parental responsibility of active supervision but might just give some extra piece of mind particularly when there is more than one little

Alliance to fight plague THANK you for Mayor Sam Aziz’s letter on electronic gaming machines (EGMs) in Casey (Council Fights Gambling, News, 8 September 2016). Unfortunately, this letter reveals only that our mayor and Casey council are really doing little more than shadow boxing with a locus plague which, if unchecked, will ruin the future for many residents in this municipality. All EGMs are made to deceive and financially exploit gamblers. In recognition of this fact, a number of Victorian local governments have declared war on the serious social and economic impact that EGMs are having in the community. For example, both Moreland and Whittlesea councils have recently formed a partnership with the Alliance for Gambling Reform coalition to demand action from the State

Government. Why hasn’t Casey council joined this coalition? Both Moreland and Whittlesea councils were the first councils to partner with the Alliance for Gambling Reform coalition to fight poker machines. They believe that it is irresponsible for any government to allow communities to suffer from the millions of dollars in losses imposed each year on municipalities from hotel/ poker machine exploitation. If the present rate of poker machine losses continue in the south eastern suburbs, Casey will soon be known as the city with the biggest poker machine addiction problem in Victoria. If I’m elected to council in October, I will insist that Casey stop shadow boxing and get serious by joining the fight against poker machines with Moreland and Whittlesea councils and the Alliance for Gambling Reform coalition. ARCHITECTS have been appointed to design Kambrya College’s $3 million upgrade. EMPIRE nightclub in Narre Warren hit a rich vein of followers after lampooning a mother’s Facebook message asking for a club ban on her 18-year-old son. The nightclub received the mother’s message on 7 September in which she stated her 18-year-old son was falling behind in his Year 12 schoolwork and was spending “all of his money” at the nightclub on Saturday nights. “I’d request you to impose a ‘ban’ on my son until the end of exams period (November).” It was followed by one from the “embarrassed” son 30 minutes later that his mum was a “bitch”, “immune to having fun” and he’d see the nightclub on Saturday. The nightclub posted the messages side by side, with its own comment: “F*** you mum im (sic) getting lit here this weekend”. It soon went viral, showered with more than 16,000 likes and hahas, and 1700 shares by the following day. Empire promotions manager Clay Tharle denied the mother was offended by the post. Mr Tharle said Empire had spoken “in depth” to the mother and son. “At Empire we respect both

What clowns CASEY Grammar School knows how to clown around. In preparation for the school’s ‘Circus of Dreams’ production, students have been learning how to hula hoop, twirl, acrobalance, perform magic and how to be a clown. Performing arts teacher, Bronwyn Kyne, said all 350 students from Foundation to Year 6 were on board. “They participated in a ‘Fun Fit’ junior fitness program designed to teach a variety of different circus skills,” Ms Kyne said. The school has also taken some inspiration from across

the ditch, and employed skills learnt by Maori dancers. “All the Year 5 students have been introduced to Poi,” Ms Kyne said. “Poi is an adaptation of the Maori Poi Dance in New Zealand where two balls of fire on lengths of cable are swung around the body to make beautiful flaming patterns. “These graceful skills are taught to the students, without fire, and how to make different Poi patterns and routines of their own.” The production kicks off on Wednesday 14 September.

Casey tops crash victims TAC statistics show Casey has more people being admitted to hospital after a crash than anywhere else in the state. The alarming figures place the City of Casey above Melbourne, Dandenong and Geelong for serious road trauma incidents. The injury data shows that 969 people spent more than two weeks in hospital last year. This was a 10 per cent increase on the previous year. The TAC’s Road Safety Quarterly Statistics report was released on Tuesday 6 September. It revealed that 6266 people were admitted to hospital following transport accidents in 2015, a 5 per cent increase on 2014. Figures show that 276 people were admitted to hospital after crashes in Casey followed by Melbourne at 231, Greater Dandenong at 223 and Greater Geelong at 203. TAC chief executive officer Joe Calafiore said many people who are injured on Victorian roads make a full recovery but some spend a lifetime being dependent on others and unable to enjoy things that other people take for granted. “We need every Victorian to think about the choices they can make, the cars they drive or the way they drive them, and make a commitment to ensuring every trip is as safe as it can be,” Mr Calafiore said.

Boost for local education CASEY and Cardinia schools are set to receive a slice of $50 million in the State Government’s shared facilities fund. The funds will target schools in Victoria’s growth areas and help to establish community hubs with libraries, sports facilities, performing arts centres and early learning centres to be shared with the wider community. Minister for Education James Merlino launched the fund on Tuesday 13 September. The fund will establish similar facilities with councils and organisations such as universities, community and sports organisations, which will be able to apply for funding to build community facilities on school sites. “Facilities shared between schools and communities help bring together our neighbourhoods,” Mr Merlino said. “They make services more accessible for everyone and help create a sense of community pride and value in our schools.” Applications for the shared facilities fund can be made online by visiting: https://manage.smartygrants.com.au/programs. A CRANBOURNE West household was invaded by thieves after a sliding door was left unlocked overnight. Around 3.30am on Monday 12 September offenders walked inside the Baltic Way home and stole a phone, purse, car keys and other items. The perpetrators then used the car keys to flee the home in a 2000 Ford Territory which was parked in the driveway. A female victim and two other people were asleep inside the house at the time of the invasion. One of the victims discovered that the car was missing around 4.20am, and went out searching for the car. The Ford was spotted at an address on Clairmont Avenue in Cranbourne, but the victims were unable to get a description of the offenders. The victims went to source help, and once they returned the car was gone.

The flag at Casey Civic Centre was lowered on 8 September after Mayor Sam Aziz introduced the motion at a council meeting two nights earlier. The council won’t raise the flag until it gets its desired action from police and governments such as more Casey-based police, tougher sentencing and a taskforce on violent street gangs. The council also resolved to set up an online petition that automatically lobbies Victorian and federal politicians on the issue. Cr Aziz labelled the spate of home invasions and carjackings as a form of terrorism. “When you think about terrorism, it is intended to make you fearful. There may not be a risk to you directly, but you don’t know for sure. “Given Casey residents are in distress and not feeling safe in their homes, we will be flying the Casey flag at half-mast till we get action to protect our community. “Our community has been under siege from the escalating violence. Why should our residents put up with this?” Cr Aziz said the flag’s lowering was delayed due to it not having been approved by Casey’s chief executive Mike Tyler, who had been away for two days at a conference.

Some posted that the council should spend more on “proactive” measures such as CCTV around Casey and ‘ambassadors’ to patrol and report on “areas of interest”. “Flying a flag at half mast is sure to scare off the bad guys,” wrote another. Other criticism centred on perceived disrespect of lowering the Casey flag - though the Australian flag, which is governed by a set of protocols, continued to fly at full mast. The half-mast measure followed fast after a special council meeting on 1 September that endorsed lobbying the State Government, Federal Government, Victoria Police and the state’s Chief Magistrate.

Cr Aziz said since the special meeting, there was at least three more serious incidents including a “terrible” attempted armed carjacking on Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road. In a show of the community’s concern, a crime prevention gathering was organised by a home-invasion victim at Sweeney Reserve, Narre Warren, on 10 September. “It’s the ones who aren’t directly affected who want direct action,” organiser ‘Brett’ - who didn’t wish to be made - said. “Once it happens to you, you probably realise you brought it on yourself to an extent. “If I was to get on my high horse about anything, I’d like the State Government to subsidise alarms and CCTV - like they do with solar panels and insulation.” Casey council’s online petition is at http://www.casey.vic. gov.au/council/advocacy-consultation/advocate/safer-casey.

HOOP arm lures will be introduced at all 13 greyhound racing tracks across the state. Greyhound Racing Victoria (GRV) will phase in the lures over the next six months, after a series of trials were conducted. GRV General Manager of Racing Stuart Laing said the hoop arm lures had produced cleaner and safer racing. “This improved safety was particularly evident with the latest version of the hoop arm lure which has been trialled at The Meadows,” Mr Laing said. The lure was trialled at seven Victorian racetracks with the objective of reducing interference in races and racing injuries, as well as examining the motivations of greyhounds to chase the lure. “In future for races run on the hoop arm in Victoria, the greyhounds will finish in the catching pen as opposed to continuing on and finishing on the lure into the back straight,” Mr Laing said. “GRV was not satisfied that using the finish on method was in the best interests of greyhound safety at this time, however GRV is about to be

EARLY DETECTION AND TREATMENT OF SKIN CANCER IS THE KEY

THEY are the region’s most wanted - and a new 20-strong divisional response unit has been deployed out of Dandenong to catch them. Detective Senior Sergeant John Bergin has established a police taskforce to tackle drug crime in Casey, Greater Dandenong and Cardinia, and process fugitives. Some of the region’s most wanted include: Khushal Bajawray, Darren Still, Nicole Spence and Barry Turner. Khushal Bajawray, aged in his mid-forties is wanted for a series of alleged drug and dishonesty offences and is known to visit the Berwick area. Darren Still, who has been seen in Cranbourne and Dandenong, is wanted for failing to answer bail in relation to a burglary. Police also wish to speak with him regarding the theft of a motor vehicle as well as various other thefts. He is also aged in his midforties and there is currently a warrant out for his arrest.

Nicole Spence is known to frequent Doveton and Dandenong and is wanted by police for questioning in relation to breaching an intervention order. The Dandenong Magistrates’ Court has issued a warrant for his arrest. Police are after him in relation to alleged theft and obtaining property by deception charges. Firm ‘no’ to racism Jenna Hutton-Murdoch LESSONS from the past provoked thought at Alkira Secondary College’s fourth annual Holocaust remembrance ceremony. Students, teachers and special guests joined survivors at the Cranbourne North school on Thursday 8 September. Holocaust survivor Peter Gaspar told students: “The Holocaust did not just happen, it was allowed to happen.” The ceremony served as a reminder to students not to tolerate

racism, bullying or prejudice and gave them a chance to celebrate human kindness. Such kindness, Polish nurse and social worker Irena Sendler (19102008) showed during the tragic time. Ms Sendler defied the Nazis by smuggling around 2500 Jewish children out of the Warsaw Ghetto and providing them with false identity documents and shelter. Students also heard from Holocaust survivor Les Kausman who said, “From evil shines a light that can illuminate the path for the next generation”.

Pretty is more than pot luck PRETTY up a pot and fill it with seedlings for a splash of spring colour, or for a mini garden of fresh herbs. Create a unique pot, or give old pots a new lease on life with a few coats of spray paint. Car enamel gives a long-lasting finish and it is often possible to pick up obsolete colours for just a few dollars. Put a shallow layer of stones in the bottom of the pot for extra drainage and use a good quality potting mix, preferably with slow release fertiliser and wetting agent, to plant up the seedlings. Petunias and nasturtiums come in a variety of colours and are both hardy, prolific and long-flowering, making them a great choice for a single variety pot. And as a bonus nasturtium leaves and flowers can be used in salads. Alternatively, mix and match a variety of plants combining colour and form to create a pretty pot of colour. Try primulas, polyanthus, sweet William, lobelia and dwarf marigolds, just to mention a few of the summerflowering varieties which will grow well in pots. Plan ahead and these can even make ready-made Christmas gifts. Why not make up a herb pot for the cook in the family! Try two or three mint varieties together, or parsley, thyme, mint, basil, sweet marjoram and chives will mix and match beautifully to put fresh herbs within easy reach of the kitchen.

Organise and then de-clutter WHY not take the time to declutter the home as part of a spring clean. Some tips: When cleaning the bedroom, always make the bed first. Utilise the space under a desk with baskets to store paperwork, projects, etc. Have a maximum of 40 or 50 hangers in the wardrobe. Donate or toss out clothing items that haven’t been worn for six months. Take a sock and cut open the end and string all the cords from the TV, DVD player, Blu-ray player, Wii machine through the sock so that they all stay put together. De-clutter social media by deleting old pictures and people who are unknown. Run a power strip through the back of a nightstand into the inside of a drawer so gadgets can be charged out of sight. Use hooks in the bathroom instead of towel bars.

HOONS who churned up a Cranbourne nature strip opened up the discussion at a Casey Council meeting. A nature strip on Stawell Street was left battered, muddy and churned up after hoons raced across it, terrifying the women residing inside the corner property. Phyllis Patterson, who lives on Stawell Street, said it has been an ongoing issue at the corner block for several years. “A lot of hoons go around that corner tearing along Cameron Street and they overtake the cars turning right into Stawell Street,” Ms Patterson said. The recent incident on Stawell Street sparked Casey councillor Amanda Stapledon’s interest and the matter was brought up at a Casey council meeting on Tuesday 6 September. Cr Stapledon raised a notice of motion to call on officers to find safe and acceptable measures to deter cars from driving over nature strips and performing burn outs which cost ratepayers’ money to repair.

Train jobs get derailed By Casey Neill DANDENONG manufacturer Bombardier has missed out on the state’s single largest train order, placing a question mark over jobs in the region. On Monday 12 September the State Government announced that the Evolution Rail consortium - including Downer Rail, CRRC and Plenary - would build 65 new high capacity metro trains (HCMT). The Journal reported in March that Bombardier missing out on the contract was “not a matter that the region would really want to contemplate”.

“The facility at Bombardier is the only Australian-based true manufacturing assembling facility for trains,” Greater Dandenong Council’s business group manager Paul Kearsley said at the time. “To lose that opportunity to expand its role within Victoria and Australia would be a really missed opportunity. “Once you lose that facility, what you lose is all the skills. “We would hope that the supply chain in the region would be able to assist either one of the two other parties.” The State Government said all 65

trains will be built in Victoria with 60 per cent local content, and partnerships with Toyota, Chisholm Institute and Swinburne University would help to transition automotive manufacturing workers onto the project. It said the project would create 1100 highly skilled local jobs. Downer’s Newport manufacturing facility will undergo a $16 million upgrade to build the trains; CRRC will establish a new regional headquarters in Melbourne, and Australia’s only bogie - or rail undercarriage - manufacturer will be established.

A new maintenance and stabling depot in Pakenham East will be built with 87 per cent local content and provide 100 new ongoing jobs. Greater Dandenong Councillor Peter Brown said his understanding was that under the Evolution plan, the carriage shells would be imported from China and assembled at Newport. “I am not sinophobic, but I am patriotic and covet Aussie jobs,” he said. “There is no reason why they could not have been built entirely in Australia from Australian made supply chain inputs.”

“That may have cost more, but I have a real problem with government giving preference to overseas jobs at the expense of local employment.” The Australian Manufacturing Workers’ Union (AMWU) said the decision would secure hundreds of jobs for workers around the state. “This announcement not only provides security and certainty to hundreds of workers and their industry, it also commits to long-term jobs and training opportunities for a new generation of highly skilled workers,” AMWU state secretary Steve Dargavel said.

THE City of Casey is to allow community groups to undertake construction works on council owned assets that they use. Councillors agreed to outsource construction projects to qualified and certified trades people within a community group at a recent meeting. Casey Mayor Sam Aziz, who first opened the discussion in June 2015, said the changes provide a “win, win” situation for the council and the community groups who will benefit from the works. Each project from local groups and clubs will be evaluated by council officers on a case by case basis, in keeping with legislative requirements and council policy. The changes mean local trades people can help out their chosen group or club in more ways than they ever could have before.

Silverbacks in barnstorming form to playoffs By Russell Bennett THE Pakenham Silverbacks have continued on their barnstorming run to the Gridiron Victoria Division 2 playoffs with another dominant win, this time over the Northern Raiders. Pakenham’s defence has been its calling card all season and it was the same story on Saturday morning in Corio, with Mel Martin’s men again holding an opponent to single figures scoring. The offensive line, quarterback Kevin Russell, and his receivers again fired on all cylinders as the Silverbacks charged to a 49-8 victory. With the result, Pakenham moves to 11-0 on the season - long having sewn up the first playoff seed in Division 2. The Silverbacks have a bye this week before heading to Ross Straw Field in Parkville on 25 September to take on the Monash Barbarians from 10.30am. The 2016 Gridiron Victoria semi-finals will be held at the Silverbacks’ home field at Officer’s Heatherbrae Reserve on 8 and 9 October. The Division 1 semi-finals will be played on the Saturday, with Division 2 the following day. The Division 2 championship will be held as the curtain raiser to the Division 1 Vic Bowl on 16 October at Lakeside Stadium in Albert Park.

Josh whistles well By Nick Creely JOSHUA Hall is a jack of all trades. Whether it be playing or umpiring in football or hockey, he is truly becoming an accomplished sportsman. The young hockey umpire is making waves for his achievements in one of the toughest industries to crack. Umpiring is a tough gig. Perhaps it’s even tougher than actually playing the sport. Not only do you have to be supremely fit, but you also have to be calm, composed and act as the mediator and the voice of reason. Josh has only recently been involved in the School Sport Australia (SSA) National Championships, where he plied his trade as an official for the Under 16 Boys and Girls Hockey Championships. He has now been selected on the Hockey Australia Umpiring Panel for the Under 13 Boys and Girls National Championships in Perth in late September. Josh says it is an honour to be selected and he can’t wait to get stuck into it. “It means a great deal. I know some of my friends are going and once again it will be an amazing experience. “I know that it will lead to bigger and brighter pathways for me,” Josh stated.

Josh Hall, Hockey Umpire. 159109 The student, who is currently in Year 11 at Beaconhills Secondary College in Pakenham, is rising up the ranks in elite hockey umpiring in Australia at a rapid rate. He says the experience of the SSA National Championships was beneficial for his development as an umpire and he got to learn lots of different techniques to better his craft going into the championships in Perth. “After every game I got some great feedback. I jotted down several things to work on and had a think about these things. “For example, I had a very monotone whistle tone. The same whistle tone for everything. By the end of the tournament my whistle tone improved a lot,” Josh said. Considering only 16 people were chosen from around the country, including just three from Victoria to umpire this tournament, it is a truly impressive effort on his part. young age, and was instantly drawn to the fast paced nature of the sport. “I remember being four or five and my older brother hitting a plastic ball with a stick around the house. “I then started going to all my brother’s games and thought this sport looked fun. “I started playing when I was six in an Under 9s competition. I always went up to a new grade a year early to play with my brother. I really developed my skills by doing that. “Through injuring my arm quite badly at a young age, I wanted to stay involved in hockey and gave umpiring a go. “I just kept progressing through the ranks and now I am doing the top grades in Men’s and Women in the state,” Joshua said. Joshua Hall is chasing his dreams, and he better pucker up, because he is on the pathway to sustained success.

Champs set to face off By David Nagel EVERY grand final is huge, but something truly remarkable is brewing with Cranbourne and Berwick set to lock horns for the 2016 South East Football Netball League title at Officer on Saturday. Two magnificent teams will fight - not only for the most precious piece of silverware in the region but for memories that will last a lifetime. That’s the remarkably resilient thing about footy clubs; the Wickers average a premiership every 18 years and would never have wavered from their dream of a period of dominance. And it may finally have arrived. They made a clean-sweep of the SEFNL last year, winning all four flags, and look well-placed to add another three to the trophy cabinet on the weekend. But comparisons between the two sides that will take to the park on Saturday, and those of the 2015 rendition of the grand final, are stark. The Wickers will be minus premiership players in Brody Connelly, Jimmy Phillips, and retired pair Paul Vanschilt and Mick Manley, while the Eagles are barely recognisable from the team that lost its fourth grand final in succession last year. Cranbourne on the other hand, could have up to nine changes from last year’s title decider. Of the new breed, Zac Roscoe has been a revelation as a small forward; Dylan Cavalot and Aaron Bower have introduced an explosive amount of pace, while Dillan Bass has gone from a two-game player in 2015 to not missing a game this year.

Kory Grant, Anthony Fischer and Nick Darbyshire have played important roles, but it’s been the inclusion of boom-recruit Shaun Marusic that has been the biggest bonus of all. Marusic had a slow start to the season, but gained confidence from a brilliant interleague outing and hasn’t taken a backward step since. The two teams squared the home-and-away season with Cranbourne edging ahead in a three-point thriller in the second semi. THE TIP There are so many elements to consider. They won’t admit it, but Cranbourne is resigned to the fact that champion full-forward Marc Holt won’t play, while Berwick co-captain Madi Andrews is surely in doubt after sustaining what looked to be a serious knee injury last weekend. If Andrews doesn’t play, it truly does square the ledger with his toughness and tackling in tight, and ability to explode away from stoppages making him the most effective midfielder in the league. If Rhys Nisbet and Simon Goosey had one choice to omit from the opposition this weekend - Andrews and Holt would be first picked. The key here could come down to a battle of the minds. There are no free-swings in grand finals, but Berwick went close last year, but this time around will have the same level of expectation as their ultra-reliable opponents. Cranbourne ... your time has come ... the pain ends now. The tears will flow after an emotional 14 point victory.

The Eagles’ preliminary final win at Holm Park Reserve sets up a mouth-watering clash against the Magpies - a team on the cusp of greatness, chasing back-to-back flags and its 21st consecutive victory. Beaconsfield coach Simon O’Shanassy knows the size of the challenge ahead, but has a clear message for his players. “The message is that if you’re there, anything is possible,” O’Shanassy said. “I’ve coached teams that have been undefeated all year and have slipped up at the wrong time, so if we have seven players who turn up raring to go I can’t see any reason

why we can’t be more than competitive.” The Eagles showed on Saturday that they have the versatility to trouble the Magpies, winning a low scoring encounter after shooting 60 goals in a 106-goal shootout against Doveton a week earlier. O’Shanassy explained that Saturday’s grand final qualifier was a surprisingly lack-lustre affair. “We were playing for sheep-stations but both teams lacked a bit of intensity,” O’Shanassy said. “We had a three to four goal lead, but weren’t playing well and you start to think that if Hampton Park flick the switch how will we respond. I thought Kaela Hughes was the defining player on the court, she had some great intercepts, put her body on the line, and was amazing in the last quarter.” The Eagles’ intensity will need to be on from the first minute to the last, with Narre Warren the masters of sensing a weakness and closing in for the kill.

The Magpies are a beautifully balanced outfit, with Tracey Dell, Kara Hargrave and Adele Clydesdale down back, Demi Brettoner, Leigh Taylor, Erin Clark and Bec Potalej controlling the midcourt, while Gabby Dwyer, Tayla Shannon and Chloe Phillips provide unstoppable scoring power. Narre Warren co-coach Greg Heinrich believes the return of Clydesdale, and the addition of Potalej and Dwyer, had brought a fresh new look, without diminishing his side’s output. “There are some big differences between this year and last year, we’ve brought in some fresh faces that have really changed the dynamics of the side,” Heinrich said. “I think we’re as strong as last year and the girls are 100 per cent ready for what awaits them. We’ll keep it low key until Saturday and then give it our best shot.” Heinrich said he had no concerns about his three premiership hopefuls

handling the pressure of the big occasion. “Gabby and Bec didn’t play last year, but both had a taste in the under-17s premiership, and Adele is in a class of her own, having played at a high level and is used to playing in pressure situations,” Heinrich said. “I’m sure the remainder of the group that won it last year would love to win it for those girls.” This is a battle between the two most powerful clubs in SEFNL, the Magpies represented with six teams on grand final day, the Eagles with five.
