Mean Greens STATE politics is getting dirty with the tension between the Greens and current MP Glen Elmes reaching new lows this week. Mr Elmes has hit out at the Greens, saying he is outraged following a series of tweets that attacked him and the LNP party, accusing the Greens of character assassination. Two tweets were posted on the Noosa Greens twitter account on Sunday 11 September. One read: “Hey @GlenElmesMP – how come you have removed #LNP logo from your website? I get your shame” and another said, “@GlenelmesMP has removed #LNP logo from his website – is he standing as an Independent? Or ashamed of membership with party of child abusers”. Mr Elmes said the LNP party logo had not been removed from his site as it was never there in the first place. A spokesperson for Mr Elmes confirmed the logo was never on the site as Mr Elmes “believes he represents all electors not just those who support the LNP”. “There is no place for this sort of behaviour in the parliament, indeed not in any community where trust and decency must prevail,” Mr Elmes said. Greens member Joe Shlegeris said the Noosa Greens Twitter account must have been hacked as he believed no-one would write such things. “I don’t say things like that,” he said.
But Noosa Greens convenor Steve Haines confirmed he wrote the tweets, and said they were an “emotional response” to LNP’s policies that support “off-shore detention of children”. “I was intemperate,” he said. “I work in mental health, so I am very sensitive to and mindful of the trauma children face and how the LNP support policy that perpetuates the trauma of children held in detention centres.” Mr Haines said there were a range of other “terms” he could have applied to Mr Elmes including “reef wrecker” in regards to the recent vote on legislation that the Greens believe would affect the future of the Great Barrier Reef. Greens members will face preselection this Saturday 17 September with a number of Noosa residents hoping to be chosen as the candidate for the State Election. Mr Elmes said the tweet alone “reveals the Greens’ true colours”. “This is not a playground, and rumours and gossip are not going to cut it, particularly actions that may be considered to be unlawful and illegal,” he said. “Voters are sick and tired of this sort of behaviour and they should be. Elected representatives are voted to lead and listen, and to set a good example; not to lie, divide and act with reckless abandon.” The tweets have since been deleted from the Noosa Greens account and Mr Haines said he would offer an apology to Mr Elmes.
Hot trends on catwalk IT WAS an absolutely fabulous day of fashion, fun and food at the annual Peregian Food and Fashion Fiesta last week. Models took to the stage to show off this season’s best looks from local stores Pink Lotus and Soul Sanctuary on Wednesday 7 September as part of the Peregian Beach Business Association’s annual event that highlights local business. Event-goers enjoyed a twocourse meal created by Peregian Beach chefs from local restaurants surrounding the Village Green while taking in the hot trends of the coming season. New citizens overcome by pride and emotion By Hollie Harris THE Noosa Community gave a warm welcome to our newest Australian Citizens last week as the group was officially presented with their certificate of Australian Citizenship and a gift. With Tewantin State School students performing ‘We are one,’ ‘Give me a home among the gum trees’ and the National Anthem, candidates from all over the world were emotional and proud to receive their new status. Forty-one new citizens were welcomed at the ceremony, including Malaysian-born Rachael Tan (Siew Cheng Tan) who is the proud owner of a coffee shop in Noosaville. “After five years of working hard and saving, I opened Pure Coffee on the beautiful Noosa River. I now employ other young people and give them an opportunity, just like I was given when I came to this country. I could not be more proud to call Australia home,” Rachael said. Canadian Annabelle and Aussie Robert met while travelling in 2010. He went back to visit her twice before it was her turn to make the trip to Australia. “It turns out our love at first sight continued and then grew, with the arrival of our first child
INBRIEF Operation Eurythmic POLICE have arrested a 79-year-old man who was seen running through the Noosa National Park in nothing but shoes and a scarf. The operation was established last week after a personal trainer used their phone to record the GPS co-ordinates and times of the man running through the park and then reported the information to the police. Police used the information to track down the Sunshine Beach man over a number of days last week. Acting officer in charge at Noosa Heads Senior Sergeant Peter Feldman said it was important to note the incident was separate from Alexandria Bay and police acted after they received a complaint about a male running naked through the park. Snr Sgt Feldman praised the resident who used technology to help police arrest the man. The man was charged with wilful exposure and will appear before Noosa Magistrates' Court on 4 October.

SOME 14 drivers were caught speeding on Noosa North Shore at the weekend after local police carried out a road safety blitz on the popular beach. One ticket was handed out for riding a motorbike without a helmet, one driver was fined for driving an unregistered car, another was fined for driving while unlicensed, but 14 drivers were caught speeding along the sand. Snr Sgt Feldman said that speeding on the beach was dangerous as the public also used the beach for recreation. “Some drivers forget the Noosa North Shore is a major thoroughfare,” he said. There were good results from the blitz with not a single positive breath test returning a positive result from 87 random breath tests carried out.

A MAN and a woman have been charged with drug offences after they were caught in the carpark of the Noosa Golf Club at the weekend. Snr Sgt Feldman praised local officers who noticed a suspicious looking car parked in the car park of the Noosa Golf Club, about 1am on Thursday 8 September. Police searched the car and found a small quantity of a “crystal substance”, drug utensils, plastic clip seal bags and a sum of cash. A 40-year-old male from Cooroibah has been charged with possessing dangerous drugs, possessing property used in connection with drug offences and failing to dispose of drug implements. A 37-year-old Gympie woman has been charged with possessing drug utensils. Both will appear in the Noosa Magistrates' Court on 27 September. Snr Sgt Feldman said the arrests were thanks to the good work of local officers. “We have a strong focus on drug offences and keeping drugs off the street and that will continue,” he said.

Crikey! A bold banknote plan By Alana Mitchelson THE daughter of Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin has this week backed plans by a group of students to honour her father on Australian banknotes. Their petition went viral when it was launched online and has continued to garner nationwide support. The students of Victorian school St Francis Xavier College - Daniel, Luke, Jake, Kyle and Riley - had watched a nostalgic Steve Irwin video online the night before launching their petition and Facebook event to advocate for Irwin’s portrait to be put on Australia’s “outdated� banknotes. During their school lunch break on Monday 5 September, the friends decided to launch the petition after hearing that the Reserve Bank of Australia planned to upgrade its banknotes. They created a Facebook event that night and by 9pm it had attracted the attention of 1500 people. They woke up the next morning to discover its reach had grown to about 3500. The event now has the support of more than 17,000 followers, with about 2000 having signed the petition. Speaking on behalf of the boys, Daniel Brown said the Sunshine Coaster was an Australian icon and an idol to people of all ages. “He was a global conservationist and a great bloke,� the 17-year-old said. “He educated us with such enthusiasm about our Australian animals and what we can do to protect them. “He died when we were in about Grade 2. We all used to watch his show and we were pretty emotionally impacted by his death. “The current notes are in need of an upgrade. None of the kids at

The notes will feature the same notable Australians,� the spokesman said. “Choosing new people to feature on the new banknotes would significantly prolong the process due to the additional research, design and consultation required. “As such, a decision was made early on to retain key design elements including the portraits depicted on each denomination.� The Royal Australian Mint, which is responsible for manufacturing Australian circulating coins, produced a commemorative $1 coin featuring Steve Irwin in 2009 to honour the role he played in wildlife conservation. Sunday 4 September this year marked the 10th anniversary of Steve Irwin’s tragic death during the filming of an underwater documentary when he was pierced in the chest by a stingray barb. The Beaconsfield students plan to maintain pressure on decision makers to include Steve Irwin on Australian currency. Give and take for success By Hollie Harris IF anyone has the recipe for a long and successful marriage, it’s Fred and Lily Wheal. Aged 92 and 94, this Noosaville couple who celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on 7 September, might just have the answer to lasting love. “I can sum it up in one word really, and I think it covers most things - it’s tolerance,� Lily said. They met at a dance in
post-war London in 1946 when Fred asked Lily to accompany him in a waltz. The romance quickly became an engagement and the pair were married a few months later. After raising two children, who later moved to Australia, Fred and Lily decided to join their family here to enjoy their twilight years, and have lived here for the last 10 years. The couple received the royal treatment last week opening cards and letters of
congratulations from Queen Elizabeth, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, the Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove, and a visit from Noosa MP Glen Elmes with an armful of flowers. After a very special lunch date at Noosa Springs, the couple shared her theory on staying together for 70 years. “You have to give and take very early on in the scene, and you have to give more than you take,� Lily said.

Grand opening for market THE new Peregian Village Market is ready to open its doors to the public with a special grand opening planned for the community. COUNCILLOR Brian Stockwell turned koala wrangler on Friday night after a koala invaded the soccer pitch during the nail-biting men’s finals at Noosa. Working as a ground official on the night, Cr Stockwell said in his four years of volunteering at the club he had never had to help remove a koala from the pitch. “I have chased streakers, escorted irate coaches and stood between warring factions, but none of these were as disobedient as our pitch invader on Friday night,” he said. “Not once, not twice, but three times I had to escort this young unregistered player from the field.” Cr Stockwell said the iconic animal first invaded the pitch before the
fourth-grade grand final, then again when the tension was rising at the start of extra time for the third-grade game where the koala ran straight out of the box, through the centre circle and past the three officiating referees. “On both occasions I assisted (the koala’s) exit toward the nearest gum trees behind the scoreboard, but this was not enough,” he said. “On the third occasion he crept under the fence and I had to wrangle him around to the southern gate. Then, with the assistance of a gentle soul, we showed him the way out to the National Park rather than the carpark were he headed the first two times.” Cr Stockwell said the koala ap-
peared to be coming from the direction of council’s recent koala offset plantings just to the west of the field - “no doubt checking out the fresh young growth,” he said. Unfortunately, Cr Stockwell lost his glasses in the first pursuit and, without being able to push the right buttons to turn on his camera, he missed out on capturing the incident on camera. “For the record, the only local team, the Cooroora fifth-grade Wombats, won the Grand Final, but that’s unlikely to command the number of shares (Australian and overseas) of the Facebook message I posted from my phone on the night,” Cr Stockwell said.

Fun run in the pink By Hollie Harris THE National Breast Cancer Foundation is calling for volunteers for the Noosa Breakfast Fun Run event which is happening on 28 October. The fun run has been part of the Noosa Triathlon Multi Sport Festival for many years, and has grown into one of the favourite participation events of the festival with
over 200 participants. The Noosa Triathlon is an internationally acclaimed event, and the community is full of spectators at this time. The fun run starts at 7.30am, and the participants run along the famous Hastings Street through the heart of Noosa and back along the main beach. All proceeds from ticket sales for this event are donated to NBCF.

NOOSA Council has partnered with MRI Ecycle Solutions to once again collect and recycle all electronic waste (e-waste), as well as batteries and HDPE (hard plastics). The Eumundi Road Resource Recovery Centre, Pomona Waste Transfer Station and Cooroy Waste Transfer Station can now accept all e-waste, which includes computers, TVs, monitors, printers, game consoles, DVD players and VCRs. If it’s electronic and plugs into a power source, there’s a good chance it will be accepted free of charge and recycled. Noosa Council’s waste co-ordinator Ian Florence said the Eumundi Road facility also accepted batteries and items made from HDPE. “These will also be recycled and are accepted free of charge. Batteries accepted include all common household batteries including rechargeable ones. HDPE is a type of hard plastic that is found in toys, poly pipe and Tupperware." Mayor Tony Wellington said Noosa Council aimed to significantly reduce the amount of waste ending up in the refuse tip. “This new arrangement with MRI E-cycle will help divert significant amounts of unwanted household items from going to landfill. Ultimately, that is not only an environmental win, but also a cost saving to residents,” he said. Family law drama SUNCOAST Community Legal Services (SCLS) will stage an original theatre production in a cautionary tale where a family’s ambitions collide with the law. The home-grown drama, Piano Forte, is the service’s first original theatre production, and will be staged at venues in Buderim, Noosa and Nambour later this month (20, 22 and 24 September respectively). Piano Forte is a fictional drama about a Power of Attorney under pressure, a baby on the way, and a much-loved family matriarch for whom life will never be the same. In keeping with the musical reference that is the title of the production, the central character, Eliza, finds herself 'played’ by the dynamics of life but a fateful event steels her to take stock and overcome her vulnerabilities. THE main public toilets at Maple Street, Cooroy, are due for an internal re-paint and some minor carpentry work. They have been partially closed for about one week from Monday 12 September, weather permitting. people IN May this year, members of a group who had organised a fundraising function that we were attending on the verandah of the Noosa Surf Club, said that as part of this fund-raising they also intended to do a charity bike ride from Coffs Harbor to Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving Club - probably in August. The purpose of this was to continue their drive to raise money in support of an organisation known as The K.I.D.S. Foundation. According to the annual report for 2014/15, K.I.D.S. (Kids In Dangerous Situations.) - which was formed in 1993 by Ballarat-based former primary school teacher Suzie O’Neill is dedicated to childhood injury prevention and injury recovery. Well, proud to say that is exactly what they did. Last week some of the riders finished their epic journey on the grass outside the Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving Club. Among those were three of our local surf club fraternity, Donald McKill of the Noosa Club, and Christy Johnston and Sheldon Schultz of Sunshine. Donald, who had previously worked as master of ceremonies for the May function, said: “We are more than happy with the overall result. There were 25 riders started out, and a support group of 10; and to top it off - fantastic weather. Also members of the GIANT Cycle Team were heavily involved. Giant is a ma-

They also assisted in traffic control and course co-ordination. The ride got hairy at times and they did a great job keeping us all safe”. The course was set mainly inland. This was, as much as possible, to keep riders off the main highways. It
was, in the words of McKill, “very hilly but very beautiful”. There was a good mixture of riders with entries from Melbourne, Sydney, Gold and Sunshine Coasts. Day one saw the riders cover a distance of 140km from Coffs Harbor to Myrtle Creek Casino, day two 110km Myrtle Creek to Byron Bay
hinterland, day three 180km Byron Bay hinterland to Spring Fields Lakes, South Brisbane, day four 160km Spring Field Lakes to Kilcoy and the last day, day five 140km Kilcoy to Noosa. This gives the riders in the vicinity of 730-plus kilometres. Christy Johnston, who for 21
years has been a teacher at Mathew Flinders College and spends her summer weekends as a volunteer Level 1 surf carnival official for Sunshine Beach, said: "The 730km was a long way but it is for a great cause. We were hoping to raise in the vicinity of $50,000 but all indications are that we have achieved $169,000 - really outstanding, makes all the aches and pains worthwhile”. On arrival at Noosa's Main Beach, riders were guests at a big barbecue and refreshments organised by Noosa Surf Club members Anton Mogg, Big Peter Williams and Ken Edwards. This was a follow-on to their work on the original fund-raising night on the verandah of the Surf Club in May. It has been estimated that 5000 children a day are injured in Australia and have to attend an emergency department. Of these 200 will stay in hospital and, by the law of averages, one will die. Sad to relate, among the list of injuries are many cases of severe burns. On the cover of the K.I.D.S. annual report there is a message from a group of children that reads: “Accept me for who I am, inspire me to achieve my dreams, give me courage to allow me to grow, and teach me to be safe - or how will I know?” To those involved organisers, support team, riders and above all the sponsors, many thanks for a worthy cause. Among those, happy to say, were our three riders McKill, Johnston and Schultz plus workers Mogg, Williams and Edwards - these six are Our People.

Art’s wild at heart THREE artists have teamed up to present to the public an exhibition that will celebrate their passion for all animals big and small, domestic and wild. Natalie Barlow, Fiona Groom and Janet Carew are proud to announce their exhibition at the Butter Factory, Cooroy, that also coincides with World Animal Day and will help raise funds for the Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge (SCAR) with part proceeds from each painting sold going to the charity.
To help celebrate World Animal Day on 1 October SCAR will bring puppies to the Butter Factory and there will also be face painting for children for a gold coin donation that will go directly to the refuge. Supporters can find out how to adopt a pet, learn how they can help as a volunteer to save animals, and purchase animal art and animalthemed clothes. The opening of the exhibition is on Saturday 17 September, at 1pm,
and the exhibition runs until 26 October. Art lovers will see the three artists are quite diverse in what they paint, which makes for a wonderful exhibition. Natalie has a love of painting birds, Fiona is inspired by painting African animals and Janet’s stunning paintings of dogs show how they are all creative in their own way. Ironing out a life of chores By Jolene Ogle HOUSEWORK and everyday chores can really drive people mad but locals have been letting off steam as part of the Iron Cage art project that aims to start a conversation about the “rat wheel” of everyday life. Artists Zoe Martin and Michael Ciavarella have been travelling throughout the shire with their ironing board, washing basket and a load of white business shirts asking residents to share their thoughts on housework and the sharing of the workload. The thought-provoking, community-driven art work looks at people’s relationship with the banal duties of everyday life. Participants have been encouraged to write their thoughts on the white business shirts that have been turned into a giant iron currently on display at the Imperial Hotel in Eumundi until 19 September. Ciavarella has also built a giant rat wheel to visually represent the recurring household chores, which has been suspended from the roof at the Imperial Hotel. Martin said she has had many interesting conversations with men and women about their relationship with housework and has enjoyed hearing a range of perspec-
tives on how duties are shared, what common issues are when it comes to chores and how people cope with the anxiety of everyday life. “For many people the process can be cathartic,” she said. “It’s not about complaining, it is about starting a conversation in the community about what matters to people in their everyday life.” The official opening of the Iron Cage Project exhibition will be held on Saturday 17 September from 6pm at the Imperial Hotel, 80 Memorial Avenue, Eumundi. Martin said this art exhibition opening is different from a standard gallery opening as it has been created by the community for the community. “It’s going to be a party,” she said. “We’re not selling anything. We just want people to come along and see what the community has created; go inside the iron and spin the rat wheel. “Join us as we celebrate the duties of everyday life and share daily experiences through art. Entry to the event is $5 and includes catering. There will be live music from Audio Sharman and a cash bar. “We need to celebrate the small victories together, day to day,” Martin said.

HOUSING finance data for July 2016 was released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) earlier this week and shows a bounce back in investor lending. The statistics showed the total value of mortgage lending in July 2016 was recorded at $31.8 billion, which was 1.8 per cent lower compared to the $32.4 billion worth of mortgage lending in June 2016.
“Over the month the value of owneroccupier lending fell by 3.1 per cent and investor lending increased by 0.5 per cent.
The value of mortgage lending is now 4.1 per cent lower than its peak of $33.2 billion recorded in April 2015.
“While the value of owner-occupier housing finance commitments was lower over the month, the value of investor commitments has now increased for three successive months suggesting that demand from this segment is coming back.”
CoreLogic’s Cameron Kusher said with home values continuing to rise it would tend to support the evidence that there were fewer transactions occurring on the back of fewer properties being listed for sale. “Looking at the two major components of mortgage lending; owner-occupier and investor lending, the value of each over the month was recorded at $19.9 billion and $11.8 billion respectively,” he said.

Despite the growth in investor lending, Mr Kusher said that tenanting a property may be an issue. “The challenge for investors from here will be ensuring their property remains occupied throughout the year as rental growth slows and vacancy rates shift higher,” he said.

Home ownership a reality for more THERE has been a solid increase in the number of Queenslanders buying their own home, according to the latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). Following on from the resurgence in Queensland’s State Final Demand figures, the latest ABS Housing Finance data shows Queensland is outpacing the national rate on housing finance for owner-occupiers. ABS data released on Friday 9 September showed the number of Queenslanders who have received finance for an owner-occupied dwelling has increased in the year to July 2016. Treasurer Curtis Pitt said that it was an encouraging sign for the State’s real estate market. “Today’s ABS Housing Finance data shows over the year to July 2016, Queensland recorded a 5.8 per cent increase in the number of housing finance commitments,” Mr Pitt said.

WITH a record-high number of units currently under construction nationwide, the capital growth performance of units is weaker than houses in certain cities, with experts predicting the trend will continue.
In Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Canberra, the change in unit values over the past year has been less than half that of houses, according to the data.
The CoreLogic Home Value Index shows that over the 12 months to August 2016, combined capital city house values have increased by 7.2 per cent compared to a 5.5 per cent rise in unit values.
“This in itself is interesting, particularly when you consider that Melbourne and Brisbane in particular are currently experiencing historic high levels of new unit construction,” Mr Kusher said.
CoreLogic’s Cameron Kusher said typically the change in house values is greater than units.
“The fact that in many of these cities substantial increases in unit stock is expected over the coming years, it is reasonable to anticipate that the gap between the annual change in house and unit value will persist and potentially grow larger.”

Tried and tested country show GREY skies may have threatened, but the 107th annual Noosa Country Show attracted thousands of locals last weekend, and they went home happy. Organisers of this year’s show said there was something for everyone and the ticket sales proved it. Few country shows have stood the test of time as well as Noosa, and the Pomona showground is still the hub of the community, in the town where Noosa Shire was originally formed so many years ago. For two full days, the main arena was full of horses and activity with people of all ages showing off what they have. Riders from all over regional Queensland came to enter with some as young as
five years old. As with all good shows, there was sideshow alley, rides of all kinds, face painting, great family entertainment and food as far as the eye could see. The rain never really took hold and show goers were happy and right into the spirit of the two-day celebration. Show president Perene Barker said she was delighted how things all came together over the two days. “It’s been a labour of love again this year, but we’re very happy with the way it all came together,” she said. “We’re a passionate show committee and thrilled with the program we assembled for 2016. I really want to thank them for their incredible efforts, allowing us to showcase
the very best of Noosa Country to so many. “We have to thank our many sponsors, too. Noosa Council has been a great support along with Geoff Edwards and the team at the Pomona and Cooroy Community Bank branches of Bendigo Bank.” This year, The Radiators headlined an awesome line-up of entertainment including, X Factor’s Jimmy Davis, the Laser Light Spectacular and lots of KC Fireworks. Monster Dinosaur Rolly Polly Trucks entertained the crowd on Saturday along with the Honky Tonk Rodeo and amateur and pro barrel racing and of course, the bull ride. LETTERS A rare privilege IN AN article in Noosa Shire Shines our local MP Glen Elmes referred to feeling privileged to represent the local community and went on with his usual self-serving stuff about our great future that he’s working hard to deliver etc. Contrast his effort to that of Mayor Tony Wellington who wrote a thoughtful and reassuring piece that reminded me that we could have had a very different future had it not been for the foresight of a group of people who fought to ensure our environment was protected back in the 1960s. I wonder what we could have expected if Glen Elmes had been the member back then? I bet he’d have been right behind the people who wanted a road through what is now the Noosa National Park and who no doubt would’ve been arguing for the road in the name of “progress“. Our local MP is indeed privileged and also very fortunate to be in a job that I believe is well beyond him given the challenges facing Noosa and Queensland. Tony Tilden, Noosa Heads.
Join the club I WOULD say without having any fear of making a false statement, Mr John Lobb of Peregian Springs has never picked up a golf club and potted a hole in one, two, three, four or five and had the pleasure of schooner or two with his mates or neighbours at the Nineteenth. If he has and I am wrong, I apologise, then surely we should be reading his outpouring of criticism over the way the dispute and doubt is progressing at Peregian Springs Golf Club. The loss of investments his neighbours and others have incurred because of mismanagement by some overseas company instead of ensuring Noosa residents be told they should be “disappointed" because Noosa aquatic centre, Noosa Leisure Centre and the “J" are operating at a loss. Mr Lobb Noosa residents are not wet behind the ears and this shire has continued to progress with the current and previous councils irrespective of its outside critics. Just for once could you just write one good thing about Noosa. I guarantee for at least one night you will have no nightmares. Sleep tight, there is no bogey man running Noosa Council. E. All about biosphere I WOULD like to congratulate Noosa Today on their Noosa Shire Shines publication. However, it was disappointing that our International UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Status was not mentioned. A lot of our Noosa community do not fully realise the importance and true value of this international listing. Noosa is one of only 14 internationally recognised Biosphere reserves in Australia, and one of only 669 such places across 120 different countries to have this recognition. It is something we should all be very proud of. Over the last weeks the relevance of our international Biosphere Reserve Status has become very important to the Noosa Shire. We have heard from our mayor and council officers that the ruling in a recent court case BCC v Gerhardt could lead to big problems in keeping Noosa special. opportunity to bypass council in the name of cutting red tape. The only thing which can stop this happening would be changes made by the Queensland State Government to the relevant rules and regulations. The fact that Noosa is internationally recognised by UNESCO as a place of special importance within our world, could play a very important part in the future protection of Noosa. This includes protection from unsuitable development. Noosa is unusual as our Biosphere Reserve Status was awarded to the whole shire and three kilometres out to sea and included everything within the shire, our people, our places, and our future. If we need assistance to protect Noosa, our UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Status could mean getting support from people around the world. Fisheries hope YESTERDAY afternoon a deputation of Noosa commercial fishers (myself by invitation) or rather insistence, met with Queensland fisheries bureaucrats in Mooloolaba and discussed local commercial fishing issues and the green paper on fisheries review on a “blue" cover. The team afforded us double extra time and certainly I came from the meeting feeling confident for our local commercial industry will continue providing our succulent world renowned Noosa River mullet for future generations. Must try harder RICHARD Pearson (Lesson in manners, NT, 1 September) doesn’t seem to think much of science teachers. I wonder if this explains his poor understanding of climate. If he had been a student in my physics class, I would have commented something like this in assessing his analysis of the greenhouse effect: “Richard, you’ve made a bit of a shaky start to your study of thermodynamics. I’m afraid I’ll have to ask you to submit this assignment again. You need to pay attention to these issues: 1. In your scenario of iceblock man standing near a pretty woman, you’re correct to ridicule the idea that the man warms the woman. Of course, the Second Law of thermodynamics tells us this is impossible. 2. Unfortunately, your iceblock man/pretty woman analogy doesn’t fit the greenhouse effect at all. It misses both the fact that there’s an external source of energy (the Sun) and the fact that the iceblock man (the atmosphere) influences the flow of energy both to and from the woman (the earth). 3. Consequently, your analysis proves precisely nothing about the greenhouse effect. In fact, you have constructed what’s known as a “straw man” by wrongly attributing your scenario to greenhouse theory. 4. There’s a general strategy that you should adopt in all your problem-solving. After you’ve finished a task, it’s always a good idea to stand back and look at how reasonable your conclusion is. If it seems totally absurd, the most likely reason is that you’ve made some errors along the way. In the case you’ve analysed here, it should have been obvious that no-one would seriously propose a theory which led to such an absurd conclusion. Strange meeting I ATTENDED a meeting on 2 August 2016 with the Katie Rose Hospice Committee and was interested in a couple of points brought up. Firstly, many people in attendance (myself included) and others not there filled out application forms and submitted their fees to become financial members of the Sunshine Hospice. To date none of us have received a reply in any form, some of these going back months. It is important that these are acknowledged so that we can have our vote on any pertaining matters. Secondly, I believe all of the equipment, much of which has been donated over the years is being put into storage, and thus not available for use by the sections of our community who need it most.

Common ground PHILLIP Rutherford (1 September), Colin Bond, Case Smit, John Turner, and a handful of other global warming deniers and I have quite a bit in common. We wish global warming wasn’t true. We realise that just one research paper providing sound evidence that man-made carbon dioxide is not the culprit causing global warming would crash the entire global warming hypothesis. Personally, I would rejoice. Thank goodness I can still drive my petrol car without guilt. Alas, that paper does not exist. After 25 years of intense oil and coal sponsored research, not one scientific paper has deflated the conclusion that we are cooking ourselves, notwithstanding the wildly incorrect information delivered in Rutherford’s misguided letter. In fact, the oil and coal industry know this is true because now they spend their billions of dollars, not on research, but on advertising and propaganda that convince the simple minds of GW deniers that there is doubt surrounding the science. In this life we have a choice. We can believe that science is overall correct in its conclusions, as we have successfully done in recent history, or we can believe in hocus-pocus, voodoo, clairvoyants, and “Andrew Bolt”, as was done in our prehistoric past. Our local GW deniers choose the latter for their information and opinion and in doing so are led down an intellectual cul de sac, which is alright for opinion letters to the editor but contributes nothing of interest for the scientific debate. Sound the alarm JOY Ringrose (25 August) dutifully toes the global warming alarmists line that the recent global temperatures have “shattered heat records”, but does not quantify the temperature rise( less than 0.1 degrees C), conveniently forgets to mention if the temperatures are based on raw or adjusted temperature measurements, and the duration of the such measurements. For example, the Central England Temperature Index commenced in 1659 and this 357 year long data set shows that the 20th century average summer temperature (15.35 degrees C) was cooler than that of the 18th (15.46 degrees C) century. The current global warming trend has been
evident particularly since the Little Ice Age (centred around 1550 AD). The rate of warming is not unprecedented and certainly has not increased catastrophically since the onset of the industrial revolution, as the alarmists would have us believe. The Minoan (1300 BC), Roman (100 BC) and Mediaeval warm periods were all appreciably warmer than the current 20th/21st century warming cycle, (+2.75 degrees C, +2.0 degrees C and +1.0 degrees C respectively), each period being cooler than the previous one. The theory of catastrophic anthropogenic global warming (CAGW) being caused by human emissions of CO2 into the atmosphere, is based solely on computer modelling and as such is just a lot of hot air. Professor Brian Cox on Q&A continued with the propaganda but did not present one shred of empirical evidence that supported the theory of CAGW, just following in the footsteps of Al Gore whose “Inconvenient Truth” contained at least nine significant errors of fact, as found by the British High Court. It's about science, stupid IN REPLY to Richard Pearson’s rant (ad preachus) against the two science teachers he mentions in the last edition of this paper, he no doubt assumes a position of scientific knowledge in the climate change debate, especially in forwarding his own personal home experiments to justify his belief. I noted on the web, his first experiment was with two fish in a cardboard box and some cling film, (sounds a bit fishy to me) which was soundly analysed by Professor Steven Sherwood from the UNSW and given its due outcome. Last week, using his analogy and abstraction it was a ‘pretty woman' of average body temperature standing close to an ice block man (himself incognito) with the result that maybe after 100 years, (if one believes in the Greenhouse Effect Theory) she may become six degrees hotter. Really. So is this happening in the Antarctic, the Gobi Desert, outside LNP Party Headquarters or somewhere else. If I was going to listen to anyone about climate change issues, it certainly isn’t you or your party. Common sense and empirical (there’s that word again) data tells me when I hear about Pacific Islands being awash with abnormal higher tides and sea levels, about glaciers that have receded by up to one third of their historical normal height and length to date, and the rapid increase in typhoons, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes and their sometimes associated tsunamis, and to add to this list, destruction of our own vast native forests, especially in our northern areas orchestrated by your own party and now the State Labor Party, (due to one now Independent MP) then I listen to unbiased climate change scientists experienced in their field. Those science teachers who pass this knowledge on to our children should be applauded, because it’s our children’s future at stake, far more than yours or mine. V-Rooming in NOOSA will play host to one of Australia’s biggest names in rock next week, when DZ Deathrays hit the latest live music hot spot on the Sunshine Coast - The V Room. Launching loudly on Friday 23 September, this new Villa Noosa band room will feature a 500 capacity room with full line array production and a professional lighting rig. It will be one of only a couple of venues on the Sunshine Coast to be in the market to host the biggest names in Australian music. Venue booker Christian Tryhorn of Beats Cartel says they have some great acts lined
up over the next few months. “There can never be enough live original music in town and we’re certainly excited to be associated with what will be one of the standout venues in the area,” Christian said. “The launch will be epic,” he said. The headlining act for the launch, DZ Deathrays have risen to become one of the standout young acts in the country. They have performed at the Reading Festival, SXSW and the Falls Festival along with supporting the likes of the Foo Fighters and Band of Skulls.
Simon Ridley, drummer from DZ Deathrays said the band had experienced many highlights so far, including the Foo Fighters shows, meeting Jack Black and winning two ARIA awards. “We’re very appreciative of it but at the end of the day people don’t remember bands because of the awards they’ve won, they remember bands by the material they put out. “There are so many great Aussie rock bands coming up all you gotta do is go down to your local pub and support one of them by giving them a few claps and maybe offer to buy the drummer a beer,” Simon said.

Noosa’s got the good Oil MIDNIGHT Oil founding member, drummer and songwriter, Rob Hirst officially launched The Making of Midnight Oil exhibition at Noosa Regional Gallery on Saturday 3 September. In a customary, symbolic welcome that occurs at each venue hosting the exhibition, Rob poured beer on a sticky, vintage, pub carpet, part of “The Antler Room” exhibit. Guests included founding members of Australian rock band Powderfinger lead guitarist Ian Haug and bass player John ‘JC’ Collins, esteemed songstress and Queensland Music Festival Director, Katie Noonan, along with Rob and Lesley Hirst, local radio identities ABC Coast FM’s Annie Gaffney and Jasmin Midgley, and 92.7 Mix FM’s Tim Aquilina were also in attendance. Local Gubbi Gubbi man Lyndon Davis entertained guests by sharing his memories of the legendary band and what their songs meant to him and his people. Mayor Tony Wellington addressed the audience with a warm Noosa welcome, “Noosa Gallery is both lucky and proud to be able to present this fantastic touring exhibition - an exhibition that began its life on Sydney’s rorthern beaches.” “In the late ’60s, the foundation was laid for rock music to take over from folk music in speaking directly to the politics of the day. “This was the firmament that laid the foundations for the conscience-driven, uncompromising rock music that followed. And here in Australia, Midnight Oil became the flag bearer of that tradition.” Gallery Director, Nina Shadforth added “This is a significant coup for Noosa. We are the only venue in Queensland to be showing this important snapshot of popular Australian rock history, through a meticulously curated exhibition that navigates through Midnight Oil’s oeuvre as well as important political and social issues.” Other highlights of the evening included stunning acoustic performances by two of Queensland’s current emerging musicians and QMusic Award winners - Ayla and Sahara Beck. A couple of choice ingredients and clever tricks is all you need to gain foodie cred in a flash. “A bottle of bubbly and some gourmet crackers are great entertaining staples, but if there’s one musthave ingredient to keep on hand for spring entertaining, it’s Australian cheese!” To really impress, serve up The Dairy Kitchen’s Baked Brie with Maple Bacon and Onion Jam. Warm, cheesy and delicious, this crowd-pleasing recipe couldn’t be more on trend or deceptively simple. “Prepare the quick onion and bacon jam in advance and then simply top the brie and put it in the oven when guests arrive,” Amanda suggests. Baked Brie with Maple Bacon and Onion Jam Serves 6-8 Preparation Time: 10 minutes Cooking Time: 20 minutes
2 rashers streaky bacon, cut into strips 1 large brown onions, thinly sliced 2 tablespoons maple syrup Quarter cup balsamic vinegar 1 sprig fresh thyme Half teaspoon yellow mustard seeds
200-250g round brie or camembert 1. Preheat oven to 180?C (160?C fan forced). 2. Heat a frypan over mediumhigh heat and fry bacon until crispy. Add onions and fry for 5 minutes, stirring often until softened and slightly caramelised. Stir in maple syrup, vinegar, thyme and mustard
seeds and simmer for 5-10 minutes or until liquid has reduced and mixture is sticky. 3. Place brie on a small piece of baking paper on a baking tray or on an ovenproof serving plate. Top evenly with jam and bake for 1520 minutes or until brie is warmed through. Remove from oven and allow to sit for 5 minutes before serv-
ing with slices of toasted bread. Shortcut: To make this recipe even quicker: pan-fry the bacon until crispy and stir through store bought caramelized onion jam. Pour over cheese and bake as per recipe. It’s important to use a whole wheel of camembert or brie, rather than a wedge as it needs the rind to hold in the melted creamy interior.

Be koalas’ best mate MAKEPEACE Island will throw open its doors to host a Save the Koala fundraising luncheon this month in a bid to stop the iconic animal facing extinction. The $250-a-head luncheon will be held on Friday 30 September as part of Save the Koala month and follows the recent establishment of the Richard Branson Koala Conservancy and a commitment by Makepeace Island owners, Sir Richard Branson and Brett Godfrey, to fund koala research. A media statement says a 5-year grants program will focus on mitigating koala mortality, with an emphasis on koala health, as well as investigating areas within the Noosa region, for its suitability as long-term koala refugia. All proceeds from the luncheon will be directed to this work and will add to monies already committed by
the owners. It is understood Makepeace Island will serve as a base for scientific koala research projects due to its proximity to koala habitat along the Noosa River catchment. Koala experts, Professor of Microbiology Peter Timms and Endeavour Veterinary Ecology managing director Dr Jon Hanger, will lead the program. Mr Branson said animal conservation was one of his greatest passions. “I wholeheartedly believe protecting endangered species is one of the most important things any of us can do,” he said. “We felt compelled to act given the dire state of koalas in the region and with this in mind, we have offered my family’s Australian home, Makepeace Island, as a central site
for koala research.” Mr Godfrey said he believes everyone has a responsibility to help protect the koala. “More work is required to clearly understand why numbers have declined to crisis levels in the Noosa region,” he said. “By working with koala experts and other stakeholders over the longer term, we are committed to support reversing the downward trend.” The Conservancy will establish an advisory board led by Dr Hanger and Prof Timms and the board will be a collegial forum for encouraging a multi-disciplinary approach to local koala efforts and will work collaboratively with government, as well as scientific and community groups. Tickets to the Save the Koala fundraising luncheon are $250 each and bookings are available online at

Men happier, while women worry more By Hollie Harris RECENT results from the Nestle Choose Wellness Quiz show the average Australian finds time to relax, exercise regularly, is optimistic and satisfied with life, but when you delve into the differences between the average man and woman, it’s a very different story. The results from the quiz, taken over 70,000 times in the last two years, has found that women are worrying more than their male counterparts and feel more lethargic. While it found that men drink more alcohol and are eating less fruit and vegetables, both feel their diet has
room for improvement (68 per cent female versus 60 per cent male). Head of Market Wellness, Katrina Koutoulas, said we could be healthier and happier by making even small changes. “Happiness and healthiness is the result of a variety of lifestyle factors including nutrition, exercise, social interactions and our ability to manage stress,” Ms Koutoulas said. When it comes to some areas of health, the results show men appear to know what they’re doing; 63 per cent of men feel strong (versus 59 per cent of women), 59 per cent of men exercise four or more
times per week (versus 54 per cent of women) and the average Australian woman is worrying more than the average male at 63 per cent versus 47 per cent of men. However, the news is not all bad for women. She is more joyful (80 per cent versus 74 per cent) and has more close friends that she can talk to (80 per cent versus 75 per cent). “Small things, whether it be smiling more, getting up from the desk at work or just being more mindful of people, can transform a person’s attitude towards their wellbeing. Large flathead in the river By Jack Mangrove WITH the storms that we saw over the region last Saturday really firing up the jacks, good fish were taken around the Tewantin Boat Harbour and up between the lakes. Fishing structure is key but when we get that change in the weather and the barometric pressure drops these fish really fire up, so stormy warm days are by far the best when chasing jacks. The middle reaches of the river have been great for flathead and the section of river from the Northshore Ferry down to the mouth is really fishing well. This is due to it being the start of the spawning season for flathead and they tend to make their way down to the river mouths and offshore to spawn. Soft plastic have to be one of the best ways to target flathead and brightly coloured soft plastic worked over drop offs and shallow banks where the flatties love to sit and feed on a passing morsel of food is great fun. Prawn profiles soft plastics are one of the most popular but small
fish profiles work equally well. Down towards the mouth of the river the whiting are in great numbers. Areas like the Dog Beach, the Frying Pan and even around Gympie Terrace are all seeing good fish. These tasty fish are taking worms, prawns and the most productive bait ... freshly pumped yabbies. Around in Woods Bays there are some nice golden trevally on the chew, small pilchard, hardy heads and white bait have been the favourite of bait anglers, while lure anglers are having success with surface lures in the low light periods and micro jigs in the brighter parts of the day. The offshore scene was a little quiet with the weather the way it was last week, so anglers were happy to see a break in the weather last Sunday and headed out in droves. For the larger craft, the Hards, North Reef, Chardons Reef and Barwon Banks were where everybody was heading. Large snapper, pearlies, cobia, sampson fish and cod all hit the decks. While for the smaller craft, reef like Sunshine, Little Halls and Jew shoals also had their fair share of
James Moorhead with a 75cm snapper. boats on them. Squire, snapper, sweetlip and trout were all reported from these.
Trolled hardbody lures are also coming into play as we start to move into the pelagic season. There have been some great developments in
this area and fast running deep diving lures like the Samaki Pacemakers and the Zerek Bluewaters are perfect for the job. These lures can run at up to 12 knots and come in a great range of colours and sizes. The first Gone Fishing Day will be held on 16 October. This is a day when all Australians can get out on the water for a fish and celebrate our love of fishing. It doesn’t matter if you have never fished before, Gone Fishing Day is for everyone. YOU can tell that the World Pro Tour is getting down to the pointy end when social media lights up with whining every time a favourite gets knocked out of an event. This is what happened at Trestles in Southern California last weekend when every world title contender got knocked out in rounds two and three, effectively opening up the possibility of a record 12th world title for Kelly Slater, or a first for Jordy Smith. While the amazing comeback story for the 44-year-old veteran has a few chapters still to be written, there is no doubt that early rounds defeat at this stage of the year is devastating for those near the top of the rankings. In the case of former tour leader Matt Wilkinson, serious contender Gabriel Medina and outside contender Julian Wilson, the losses were particularly galling because they went out by a fraction of a point. It’s totally under-
standable that they are not going to take this well when it means a lowly finish gets added to your end of year points. There is a lot of money and prestige hanging on this stuff, and unfortunately, whereas back in the day a disgruntled competitor would swear at the judges, chuck donuts in the carpark and go home and get drunk, now they take to social media and ring a bell that can’t be unrung. So we have our own Jules posting on Instagram: “The judges might need to take some responsibility for their scores over the past two days. Might be time to put them under the microscope, like they do to us.” And Matty Wilko, who has worn the yellow leader’s jersey for most of the year after an incredible start: “It is hard to accept when they make decisions that decide people’s lives and don’t take care to make the decision right and are not at all held accountable.” The 2014 world champion Gabriel Medina posted, after being taken down by less than half a point by local wildcard Tanner Gudauskas: “Time to go home.
Very sad. I have dedicated my life to it. So tired.” Oh puleez, boys! Because of the time difference and the fact that I like to sleep at night, I’d missed most of these eliminations, so when Twitter, Insta and Facebook lit up, I took the trouble to go through the WSL’s efficient heat analyser and draw my own conclusions, which might be as batty and ill-informed as the boys reckon the judges’ are, but here they are. Julian Wilson was beaten by a bee’s dick by Alex Ribeiro, a Brazilian rookie whose style of surfing could not be more different to the Coolum lad’s smooth rail game. But the kid was on fire. It was only Jules’s precision surfing at the end that made it so close. It was a tight call. Judges blameless. Medina’s round three loss to Gudauskas was also a tight call. Medina may have been slightly under-scored on his second wave, but I believe Tanner was hard done by on his first. On balance I would have given it to the Californian. Wilko’s championship-defining second round loss to local
Brett Simpson was the only call where I would definitely have gone the other way, despite the fact that I am not a huge fan of the Australian’s gouging backside attack, while I have loved watching Simpo surf since I saw him as a grom in California a dozen years ago. In a relatively low scoring heat, Simpo was smooth as silk and Wilko as rough as guts ... until he put it all on the line with his last wave, and didn’t put a foot wrong. Needing a high six, I thought his wave bordered on excellent, say a mid to high seven, but he didn’t get it. Wilko’s disappointment was palpable, smashing his fist in the water, storming the judging tower and then unleashing on social media. The decision may have cost him a world title, but he also has a lot to answer for in that regard himself. Bummer. Move on. Claw your way back, son. It wasn’t only the competitors with their noses out of joint last weekend either. Having lost team riders Medina and Wilko from the mix, Rip Curl heavy Neil Ridgway posted on Facebook that the team had exited the Hurley Pro

for places where they were better loved, but that they might come back to cheer their girls on. Oh dear. Ridgy, it might have been smarter to just chuck a donut in the carpark.
Writers Festival deserves support THE Sunshine Coast International Readers and Writers Festival made its debut at Coolum last weekend, and although it was weather-plagued in the early stages, the spring sun was shining brightly over it on Sunday when I chaired a panel discussion with former pro tour surfers Serena Brooke and Simone Day, and indigenous surfer Mick Sidaway in front of a small but appreciative audience. It was a quiet beginning for founder Wendy O’Hanlon and her committee, not helped by the date clash with the Brisbane Writers Festival, but I hope they won’t be disheartened. The venue of Coolum Civic Centre and surrounding parkland is perfect, and with local support this could develop into an important part of our cultural calendar.

Lifesavers back on patrol Between the

WITH the winter months behind us, it is again time for the lifeguards to step aside on weekends and hand control of the patrolled beaches to our volunteer life savers. On Saturday morning at 7am, the red and yellow army will be back on duty at our three local beaches Noosa Heads Main Beach, Sunshine Beach and Peregian. To our visitors, tourists, mums and dads remember the golden rules - if we can’t see you we can’t save you, and if you have a concern talk to the Red and Yellow patrol. Answering questions is part of the job; but most important - Bathe Between the Flags. For our tourists remember the National Park is a beautiful scenic walk and we invite you to enjoy it. However the small beautiful beaches you pass along the way are unpatrolled, and as we said - if we can’t see you we can’t save you. The best way to start one of these family walks is to have a chat with your local patrol captain. Sunshine Beach patrols are once again under the control of club captain Scott Summers. “We are off to a good start,“ Scott said. “Our roster shows we have 12 patrols and for us this is good; our IRB patrols are all geared up and ready. To cover these patrols we have approximately 180 members and with a new bronze squad about to finish their training, they will add to our numbers,” he said. Regarding training, Sunshine will on the weekend run a patrol captains

Competition training has, under supervision of former Olympian Clint Robinson, been under way for several months. Good to see Sunshine keeping one of the old traditions alive and well - first weekend back a big major clean up with everyone chipping in
to help, followed by a big club barbecue. Over the hill at Noosa the atmosphere is similar. Club captain Roger Aspinall has presented a total of 22 patrols and this roster also covers Peregian Beach, with lifeguards working Peregian on Saturdays and public holidays and Noosa covering Sundays. At the finish of patrols Saturday,
Noosa will also host a start of the season barbecue for all members - a welcome back and get to know you for new members. The IRB crews have been busy with complete overhauls of all boats, motors and equipment. Bronze training and school education are also under way with the school programs going from strength to strength. In the competition arena, head
coach Darren Mercer has his teams hard at it and two members having had a successful winter competition at international level. The boat section, supervised by boat captain Blair Townsend and training under boat sweeps David Tomba and Mick Gardner, has been under way for several weeks. This season junior coach Mick Gardner will be talking with schools and football clubs regarding membership. Talking about the boaties, one rower in particular has got off to a great start. Senior rower Keith Strajnar on Saturday captained the Dolphins A Grade rugby team to win the premiership. This is something that the Noosa club also takes immense pride in as the Dolphins club started in the bar at the Noosa Surf Club and since then the membership has been intermingled. Sad but true. Many Australians don’t really understand exactly what life savers do, or how we live and work. To overcome this, on Saturday 24 September Noosa will conduct an open day from 8am to noon. You are all invited to visit the clubhouse where you will get the chance to meet your life savers and enjoy a guided tour of the premises. This will give you the opportunity to meet life-members and also national champions such as Jordan Mercer Iron Woman, Grace Kaihue ski champion and World Paddle Board Champion Lockie Lansdown. At 9am you can watch the Seahorse Nippers as well as rescue demonstrations - while enjoying a big barbecue. As we said - come and meet your local life savers.
Soccer season ends on a high By Jules Rosenkranz NOOSA EAGLES SOCCER THIS week took Noosa Eagles Soccer Club to the end of the 2016 soccer season. Despite the clouds and a little bit of rain, many of the Eagles families headed to the Lutheran College for a morning of fun and celebration for the club. The preparation from the committee was clearly apparent by the food and games - and of course trophies - that were ready to go for the club's over 130 junior members. After playing on the jumping castle, enjoying an old favourite tug-of-war as well as some three-legged races and a bit of dodge ball, which was strangely
fun for the adults as well, everyone then retreated for the club presentations where every player was awarded with a trophy. An enormous thank you goes out to all the coaches and managers who selflessly have given their time and efforts to help coach players. The club could also not be run without the efforts of the great committee, so a massive thank you was extended to Noosa Eagles President Carl Burberry for leading the committee, and of course the entire committee for their efforts throughout the season. Later that evening “The Adermann Soccer Awards” were well attended by representatives of the Noosa Eagles Soccer Club.
It was a huge night, with 650 players and families attending from the Sunshine Coast Churches Soccer Association. Three players from Noosa Eagles were nominated for the award, Elijah Taylor, Jude Youens and Innocent Sabinda. They received medals for being nominated, but the competition was very stiff and our boys unfortunately didn’t win the big award. It was an honour just to be recognised for an outstanding year of soccer, well done boys! The entire club is very proud. Next season's sign on is scheduled for February 2017.

LAST Saturday morning at 8am the Noosa Surf Club upheld one of their proud traditions when they hosted a premiership breakfast for the Noosa Dolphins A Grade rugby team. This tradition goes back several years, and the stipulation is that should they make the grand finale, the surf club provides the bacon and eggs, coffee and orange juice with compliments from the club. Proud to say it is one expense we look forward to paying - hopefully it happens every year. The menu must have been spot on for the Dolphins took out the
A Grade premiership, beating Caloundra 10-5 and winning the reserve grade 22-16 - also against Caloundra. To strengthen the tradition and the relationship, the captain of the Dolphins A Grade Keith Strajnar, also rows for the Noosa A Grade boat crew, and Man of the Match Jarrad Postle is the son of Noosa surf club old boy Barry Postle. Another Noosa rower, Charlie McKill, was also a member of the A Grade team, and his father Donald, deputy president of the Dolphins is also a patrol captain on Noosa Beach. Jake’s bronze medal glory By Jolene Ogle NOOSA'S Jake Packard has returned from Rio with a bronze medal and a host of great memories after his first Olympic games. The 22-year-old breaststroker competed in the 4x100m medley relay alongside Mitch Larkin, David Morgan and Kyle Chalmers, who took out the medal at the games. Jake said the opportunity to race against the best in the first week of
the games was the most exciting thing to happen to him. “But, of course the number one highlight was to race with the Aussie team in the 4x100 medley relay and we were lucky enough to come away with a bronze medal,” he said. Other highlights of the Olympics included watching sprinter Usain Bolt create history. “A group of us organised to watch the athletics the night of his 100m final. We saw him race and what a Pomona’s Lachie Lansdown has just returned following a successful paddle board campaign in the US.

thing was in running condition and we are glad that it was,” he said. “To have such an amazing experience for my first Olympics is something special and it is only going to make me hungrier for Tokyo in four years' time. “In regard to the nightlife, we are luckily enough to have such a great team and spent certain nights out as we all wanted to watch other sports instead of partying and living it up. We can always do that back at home.”
And taking some time out to relax is exactly what Jake plans to do. “At this point, a long break is needed which is lovely. I’m slowly gathering my thoughts and processes and moving all those challenges we had before Rio and implementing them for future training regimes that we have in mind,” he said. “My coach and I are focusing on Tokyo, which I can’t wait for – but it’s going to be a long four years and hopefully everything goes to plan.”
Lachie paddles to a world record POMONA’S Lachie Lansdown has returned home this week after two months extensive paddle board racing in the USA. Lansdown’s campaign started in Hawaii racing the well known 52km long Molokai race, bringing home silver for the second time in the stock division. Lansdown had a strong second half of the race, closing to within striking distance of the leader, but GPS problems on the escort boat saw him hit China Walls, the cliff face leading to the finish, in the wrong place allowing the leader to cross the line a few minutes in front. Next on the list of competitions for Lansdown was the US National Lifeguard Championships where he crossed the line second in the open male board race, followed by the Quicksilver Survivor race, where he won the distance race, finishing his campaign with the Survivor Race - a new format with a number of races counting to an overall point score. The final race for Lansdown was the Catalina Classic, the original long distance paddle board race that Molokai is based on with a history dating back to 1955, and Lansdown became the youngest winner in the history last year.

The race is a gruelling flat water paddle across the busiest shipping channel in the world; it is not uncommon that paddlers have to wait to allow the massive container ships entering and exiting LA harbour to pass by. Lansdown pushed to the finish taking over seven minutes off the previous record and walking (or should we say paddling!) away with the win.
This was Lansdown’s second consecutive stock win at Catalina giving him a second spot on the Classics Perpetual trophy and the youngster is still shocked with such a successful campaign. “I don’t think it has sunk in yet, but it is pretty amazing,” Lansdown said. “I had guys right on me the whole way – Jack Bark, Nic Fox – it was a fast stock year.”
