New jobs on deck By Casey Neill A $1.44 million project will create 12 new jobs at a Dandenong South boat manufacturer. Industry and Employment Minister Wade Noonan and Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams visited Bar Crusher Boats on Thursday 8 September to contribute $320,000 to the project. The company’ managing director Peter Cleland said the Future Industries Manufacturing Program grant would contribute to a robotic processing line. “Automation will allow us to increase capacity and keep a lid on costs - that’s going to make us more competitive to export markets,” he said. “We feel that it’s a visionary for the Andrews government to provide this fund in light of the declining automotive industry.” Mr Noonan said the program was helping businesses, small and large, to invest in new technologies and processes to transition Victoria towards an advanced manufacturing economy. The upgrade will allow Bar Crusher Boats to take on 12 new workers, transition five existing staff members and increase its exports by more than $1 million. The company is the largest manufacturer of plate aluminium trailer boats in Australia. It supplies the recreational and fishing boat industries, which is worth $4.5 billion in Victoria. In August last year, the Journal reported that then-Federal Small Business Minister Bruce Billson toured the factory with Boating Industry Association of Victoria (BIAV) members. “With the pressure on the automotive industry, he’s looking to get a feel for what industries might be growth opportunities,” Mr Cleland said of Mr Billson at the time. “We’ve got a good growth story.” The family owned business has been running for 15 years, the past 10 or so in Dandenong South. “Our five-year plan is to double the size of the business and potentially access export opportunities,” Mr Cleland said. “One of the opportunities is to grow infrastructure to improve access to the waterways. “There was also discussion about the great resources in Western Port and Port Phillip bay. “There needs to be a strategy and policy and funding to develop that resource for its economic value.”
Keeping the flame of faith alive A greater power is surely keeping a close eye on the Greater Dandenong Interfaith Network office following a blessing ceremony. The group held the event on Wednesday 7 September to mark a year since it moved into the Clow Street site. A representative from each faith and spiritual organisation in the network offered a blessing and lit a candle. City’s prejudice plague By Casey Neill Discrimination is plaguing South Sudanese people living in Greater Dandenong, a new study has found. Monash University Professor Andrew Markus prepared the Australians Today report for the Scanlon Foundation, which was released on Wednesday 24 August. The multiculturalism-focused study was the largest of its kind in Australia and involved 10,000 online surveys, 50 focus groups and 280 in-depth interviews. Prof Markus said that in Greater Dandenong “the overall picture is a positive picture”. “The main issue that comes up is the discrimination,” he said. He said that in suburbs including Dandenong, Noble Park and Springvale, 84 per cent of South Sudanese people reported experiencing discrimination.
“It’s really quite high in that area,” he said. “That’s really up at the top end of that scale.” One Sudanese man told the survey that people were “surprised” when they encountered him when he first arrived. “But living in Noble Park I’ve just seen a change, I’ve seen the wave of changes from no Sudanese, not a lot of Sudanese people, to having Sudanese people... running a few businesses in the area,” he said. However, across the country South Sudanese people reported the highest level of discrimination of any group, at 77 per cent. Three per cent of third generation Australians reported unfair treatment at work, compared to 32 per cent of South Sudanese. Again, only 3 per cent of third generation Australians indicated they were not offered a job, compared to 55 per cent of South Sudanese. “It seems that differences of skin colour are a significant issue for many Australians, for whom
there has been little interaction with very dark skinned people,” the report said. In the survey more generally, Greater Dandenong ranked 90 on an index of the prevalence of social cohesion issues where 100 was average. “Greater Dandenong is below the average rather than above the average in terms of the problems what we’ve looked at,” Prof Markus said. Where the municipality struggled was on the “neighbourhood” front, which covered whether respondents felt able to have their say on issues and that people got on well together, were willing to help their neighbours and were treated fairly by police. “On that indicator, Dandenong gets one of the worst scores,” Prof Markus said. It received the best score - 58 - for ‘belonging’, which referred to satisfaction with life, happiness over the past year and a sense of belonging in Australia.
Fire at a unit on Robinson Street in Dandenong forced the neighbouring Family Court building to close. Just a few hours later, firefighters extinguished a blaze in a clothing shop that appeared to have been deliberately lit. Firefighters from the Dandenong and Hallam brigades were called to the ground floor fire at the three-storey unit block just after 5am on Thursday 8 September. Smoke created dangerous carbon monoxide levels in the courthouse. Firefighters attended another fire at a clothing shop in the Hub Arcade in McCrae Street at 9.18am and brought the fire under control in less than 10 minutes. A 28-year-old man was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.
Cop car ramming attempt
Taser used in pharmacy theft A thief armed with a taser threatened staff and stole drugs from a Noble Park pharmacy. The man entered the Harrisfield Pharmacy on the Princes Highway about 10.25am on Tuesday 30 August. He produced a taser and demanded drugs from the woman behind the counter and then went and got them himself. He was about 168cm tall, appeared to have a hunched back, wore a fluoro jacket, gloves and dark beanie, was clean-shaven and had blond hair.

A man looking for ‘Mika’ tried to force his way into a home in Dandenong. He knocked on the Bruce Street property’s garage door about 7pm on Sunday 4 September. A 26-year-old man opened the front door to see what was going on and the visitor asked if Mika was there. When the resident said he didn’t know anyone by that name, the man tried to use a screwdriver to force his way through the door. Having failed he picked up a brick from the garden and threw it through a front window and left. He’s described as Caucasian, aged in his late twenties and 170 centimetres tall with brown hair and wearing a pink T-shirt and blue shorts and left in a blue vehicle. Smoke closes courthouse
Two men have been arrested after allegedly attempting to ram a police car while driving a stolen car in Dandenong at the corner of Gladstone Road and Princes Highway about 12.05am on Wednesday 7 September. Police avoided the collision and tracked the fleeing car through several suburbs to Cranbourne. The two men were bitten by police dogs and arrested in Sladen Street backyard. A 27-year-old from Keysborough was taken to hospital with bite wounds and a 34-year-old Dandenong man was treated by paramedics at the scene.
Neighbourhood on lookout for new crime-fighters Neighbourhood Watch hopes a fresh wave of grass-roots crime-fighters will start keeping an eye on Keysborough’s new estates. The Greater Dandenong arm has instigated installation of the recognisable white and green Neighbourhood Watch signs in the Somerfield estate and others. Greater Dandenong Council and Carlisle Homes supported the project. President Dawn Vernon said the group had several others on the go. “We now have personal and door alarms available at the low price of $15,” she said. She also encouraged people to take advantage of one-way number plate screw fittings. Ms Vernon said thieves stole 12,000 plates in Victoria last year. “The cost and inconvenience to notify your insurance company and VicRoads, and buy replacement plates ... and if you have personalised number plates they cannot be replaced,” she said. “We will be fitting number plate screws at Bunnings Springvale in October. “They donated us a barbecue valued at more than $790 to raffle.” The group will also hold a public forum on Wednesday 21 September that will double as its AGM. “This night will be very much about crime prevention and safety,” Ms Vernon said. Victoria Police Safer Communities Unit Inspector Zorka Dunstan will be the guest speaker and there’ll be time for residents to ask questions and mingle with neighbours from across the city. Ms Vernon said Neighbourhood Watch started in Victoria to help police control rising crime rates, particularly burglary. A pilot eventuated in Kananook in 1983 and today there are about 7000 Neighbourhood Watch volunteers across the state. “Every one of these volunteers are keen to contribute to the prevention of crime,” Ms Vernon said. “Could you help too?" The public forum will be held in Room 3 at the Paddy O’Donoghue Centre, 18-34 Buckley Street, Noble Park, from 7.30pm to 9pm on Wednesday 21 September. They participated in Wallara’s Picture This art competition, which is now in its fifth year. “In previous years the invitation to participate was extended to local schools to encourage their students to think about disability and what social inclusion for people with different abilities really means,” Wallara spokeswoman Karen Scholey said. “This year, Keysborough Secondary College was given an exclusive opportunity for their students to get creative and Wallara was delighted to receive over 100 entries from students of various ages.” Judges visited the school on Tuesday 6 September to select a winner. The panel included Greater Dandenong Mayor and former Keysborough College student Heang Tak and Penny Neophitou from Navarone Panels, who has supported Picture This since its inception by applying the winning artworks to

Dandenong-based Wallara was established in 1959. It supports more than 450 adults with different abilities at 30 sites throughout the south east through community day services, residential and supported accommodation, part-time and fulltime employment, training and workplace opportunities.

Five Greater Dandenong schools will soon have an on-campus doctor. Lyndale, Noble Park and Keysborough secondary colleges, Dandenong High School and Oakwood School’s Noble Park campus were among 100 schools chosen for the State Government’s $43.8 million Doctors in Secondary Schools initiative. Local doctors will visit up to one day a week to address health problems, refer students to specialists, and reduce the pressure on working parents and community-based GPs. Lyndale student engagement and wellbeing director Ana Finlay said many students didn’t go to see a doctor. “I see it as a great opportunity to promote health and for our students to access that service that generally they’re reluctant to access,” she said. “There’s lots of reasons why kids don’t. Some of them are cultural-based, others are embarrassed to go with a parent.
“I think the concept is brilliant.” Ms Finlay said the doctor could also advise the school of health areas where students could benefit from more education. Work is now under way on recruitment and training, building consultation rooms at schools and establishing partnerships with healthcare providers. The GP service will start at 20 schools in Term 1 next year, a further 40 in Term 3 next year, and the remaining 40 from Term 1 in 2018. Premier Daniel Andrews said young people, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, were the least likely to see a GP. “So, putting doctors in schools will make sure these kids have the access to healthcare they need,” he said. Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams said: “Happy, healthy and resilient students learn better, stay in school longer and achieve more.” Keysborough MP Martin Pakula said the program would help students to identify and address their health concerns early.

13 September 1966 Springvale as first automated council The likelihood of Springvale becoming Victoria’s first “automated” council is strengthened by its decision to buy a $45,000 magnetic ledger accounting machine. The council has approved a tender by IBM Australia Pty Ltd for the $45,187 machine, which it considers will keep rate administration costs to a bare minimum. Springvale Town Clerk Mr H L Williams, who announced the council’s decision, said that with the saving made through not having to add to his staff or have additional office space built, the computerised machine will more than pay for itself in a few years. He said: “Since the machine can calculate rates and at the same time accumulate complete analysis of the levy, allocate payments to rate book balances and automatically calculate extra charges all at posting speeds
News of JP Walker’s death Mr W H Walker has received news that his son, Sergeant John P Walker has been killed in action in France. Sgt Walker was educated at the Melbourne Grammar School, a first-class athlete having played pennant cricket with East Melbourne, and league football with St Kilda. During his residence in Dandenong he was a prominent member of the local cricket and football teams and was a great favourite with all sections of the community. Prior to enlisting he was studying law when the call for men was answered. Sgt Walker served at Gallipoli and afterwards in France. To the bereaved relatives we extend our sympathy.

20 years ago 9 September 1996 Wedge grab Contentious plans to build houses on Keysborough’s “green wedge” should be scrapped, according to an independent panel appointed by Planning Minister Mr Rob Maclellan. But Greater Dandenong Council is expected to disregard the panel’s recommendation and support development on 200 hectares of the green wedge, including 16 hectares of council-owned Tatterson Park. The panel heard submissions for and against the proposed planning scheme amendments which, if approved, will pave the way for a 4300 lot housing development on a 144 hectare area specifically reserved for
non-urban use. The application is by a group of landholders called the Southern Strategy Group and affects an area bounded by Springvale Road, Cheltenham Road, the proposed Scoresby Freeway, proposed Dingley Bypass, Dandenong Creek and Mordialloc Creek.

She last hosted the 1950s themed music event when she was mayor in 1992. Queueing up for taste sensation By Cam Lucadou-Wells Could there be a better exponent of ‘food porn’ than Sugar Buns cafe in Hampton Park? The much-photographed mega-shakes are indeed a feast for the eyes as well as an explosion of sweet flavour that wouldn’t be out of place in Willy Wonka’s imagination. On average, Sugar Buns create a staggering 700 mega shakes a day, including the ‘chocoholic’, ‘candyland’, ‘salted caramel’ and ‘strawberry shortcake’. Behind the scenes, staff meticulously construct the shakes like they’re an artwork. On top of the ‘chocoholic’ ice-cream mountain, the chefs lavish chocolate sauce and affix Tim Tams, wafers, fairyfloss - and then line the plate with mud cake. Owner and director Steven Richard says he

Other highlights are a lavish carbonara papadelle in a smoked ham-hock jus with crispy bacon, mushroom, poached egg, fresh pasta and cream sauce. The calamari powdered with ground up fennel, oregano and rice-flour is another must-try. “I work on creating a balance of flavours,” Mr Richard says. “But the key these days is that people eat with their eyes. Every person, before they eat, take a photo of their food and share it. “They call it food porn. “We have to give people the excuse to market for us.”

Upgrade target Springvale’s shooting range will receive a $450,000 facelift. Sporting Shooters Association of Australia (Victoria) recently learned that its application for $100,000 from the State Government’s Shooting Sports Facilities Program was successful. It received $100,000 from the program’s first round last November and will put in $100,000 of its own funds for the project at the Princes Highway pistol and rifle shooting facility. SSAA Victoria facilities manager Shaun Doyle said work was already under way behind the scenes and patrons should start to see activity on the range within the next month or two. “We now have the ability to refurbish the front entrance and the toilets, repair and replace walls and carry out several other projects around the range to improve the aesthetics,” he said. The Sporting Shooters Pistol Club resides at the range and also successfully applied for a $100,000 grant which will be boosted by $50,000
Three men terrorised three drivers at three locations within three hours, causing injuries to two. Southern Metro Regional Crime Team investigators are appealing for public help over the Tuesday 30 August spree. They said a 36-year-old Dingley Village woman was returning to her Jeep Cherokee parked near Genesta Court, Keysborough, about 8pm, and was loading shopping into her car when she noticed three men nearby acting suspiciously. One walked towards the car so the victim got inside and locked the doors. The other two men started to approach but were scared off when another car parked nearby. Investigators believe the same three men then attended a car park at Montclair Avenue and Glendale Street, Glen Waverley, about 9.25pm. One man tried to pull a 60-year-old Vermont South man out of his Volkswagen Touareg while the others waited nearby. The victim resisted the attack and eventually

The Journal reported in May that State Parliament had changed the law so SSAA Victoria could buy the government-owned site, which it’s used for 40 years. “We have 1400 visitors attend the range each month,” SSAA Victoria CEO Jack Wegman said. “This number is increasing steadily as interest in the shooting sports grows. “The Springvale range is a hub of SSAA Victoria and where many new sporting shooters are introduced to the sport.” Mr Wegman said the venue hosted many state title competitions. “We even had a national title for pistol there last November,” he said. “There aren’t too many shooting ranges in Melbourne so they come from right out past Pakenham and out to the Mornington Peninsula.”

managed to drive off. He suffered bruising and cuts to his face. Police believe the group then attended at Parkmore Shopping Centre on Cheltenham Road, Keysborough, about 10.30pm. There they assaulted a 59-year-old Keysborough man as he returned to his grey 2009 Ford Falcon XR6 with grocery shopping, then stole the car. The victim suffered a fractured nose and facial bruising. He can’t remember whether they made any demands before the assault. The car was involved in a collision at Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road and Pound Road on Monday 5 September. The driver ran from the scene. All three attackers are thought to be Caucasian and were wearing dark clothing and had their faces covered. Education Minister James Merlino presented seven MY Education Awards on Thursday 8 September. The Centre for Multicultural Youth developed the MY Education Awards to recognise excellence and showcase outstanding contributions from students, volunteer tutors, schools and homework clubs. Nobel Park Secondary College student Akbar Ali and Dandenong High School’s Rose Ajjaba shared the Outstanding Secondary Student title. Akbar, 18, arrived in Australia without any family members. He makes VCE study a priority and is a mentor to fellow students despite being responsible for his own wellbeing, including rent, food and medical care. Rose attends a regular out-of-school-hours learning support program that helps her and other newly arrived students to concentrate on their learning in a safe and encouraging environment. She regularly assists in tutoring others, which helps build their self-esteem as well as her own confidence. Temira Mohammed was the joint winner of the Outstanding Primary Student award. Roy Aspinall has been part of Sandown Racecourse since it opened, and will be forever more. The Dandenong Retail Traders’ Association founding president died on Saturday 3 September following a long health battle. He’ll be farewelled at Le Pine Funerals in Dandenong at 2.30pm on Monday 12 September. In his final weeks, Mr Aspinall organised with Melbourne Racing Club to have his ashes scattered at the finishing post at the Springvale race track. “I was there the day it opened,” he told the Journal. “Sandown has been my life.” Mr Aspinall wrote for nationals and dailies as a journalist for more than 50 years, and for several local papers in the last 20 years of his career as a freelancer. He enjoyed what he called “a special association” with the Dandenong Journal since the mid1990s when he started sending out press releases regarding race meetings at Sandown, the Dandenong Retail Traders’ Association and the Rotary CIub of Noble Park Charity Bowls Day. His final Spring Racing Fever column appeared in the Journal on Monday 1 August. Mr Aspinall was the inaugural Dandenong Retail Traders’ Association chairman in 1996 and held the position for 16 years. When he stepped down on 27 November 2012, he received a letter under seal from then-Greater Dandenong Mayor Angela Long on behalf of the council, “in recognition of his contribution to the Dandenong business community”. On the night she said that Mr Aspinall was “a powerhouse of the local business community” whose skill as a trader and organiser was unending. “Roy has worked tirelessly for the improvement of the association and Dandenong,” she said.
Pair 'looking for place to sleep' Two men on bail appeared in court after being arrested during an alleged attempted car-theft in Dandenong on 5 September. Dylan Antony Lockley, 21, and Kallen McPhail, 24, were arrested shortly after midnight on 5 September, a court bail hearing heard. A resident had been woken by a car horn and saw his Toyota Prado’s tail-lights come on as he checked his CCTV footage, informant Acting Sergeant Michael Harris told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court. When police arrested the pair minutes later they admitted starting the vehicle. McPhail was found in possession of ice, an ice pipe and multiple tools in his underpants on 5 September, the court was told. He was wanted on three outstanding warrants for failing to appear on bail over car-theft and weapon charges. McPhail, who told police he wanted to sleep in the Prado for the night, was homeless and sleeping in various cars, his lawyer told the court. The accused, a daily ice user, had moved out of home to protect his family from his former associates, the lawyer said. “These people are after him. They smashed the windows at his mother’s house on more than one occasion. “He would very much like assistance from the court on (his ice) problem.” He also faced charges over being a passenger in a stolen LandCruiser with no number plates that evaded police at Dandenong Basketball Stadium car park on 31 August. During the vehicle’s escape, it drove at high speed on the stadium’s lawns to avoid stop sticks at the car park exit. The police lights-and-siren pursuit was abandoned barely one kilometre later at Heatherton Road, but the vehicle was monitored by helicopter

until it broke down at Safety Beach. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said McPhail didn’t seem to be dissociating from bad influences during his recent offences. On hearing that McPhail wanted to go back to school and get off drugs, Mr Vandersteen said: “None of this is going to work unless he’s at home.” Mr Vandersteen adjourned sentencing to the following day to hear from McPhail’s parents. After his arrest on 5 September Lockley was found with three grams of methamphetamine inside a pocket in his jacket’s collar. The unemployed applicant, a known drug user, was also accused of driving a car that had been stolen when a cleaner was robbed at a Cranbourne North pre-school car park on 29 August. “If you don’t give me the keys I’ll stab you,” the unknown armed robber allegedly told the cleaner. Lockley was allegedly spotted driving the stolen car with freshly stolen number plates at a car wash on 31 August. The car was found burnt out in Cranbourne West at 6am the next day, the court was told. Lockley told the bail hearing that he believed the aggravated burglary and car theft charges had been dropped due to a lack of evidence. He said he was sorry to his “caring and supportive” family for “the stress I’ve caused them”. “I hope you can grant me bail to prove to myself and my family I can change my ways and be a good person.” At the time, Lockley was on a community corrections order and on bail for charges including aggravated burglary, theft of a motor vehicle and unlicensed driving. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen noted that Lockley had last been in court on 31 August as well as being subject to bail and a corrections order. “I don’t doubt your genuineness. There’s no proper supports to reduce the risk of offending to an acceptable level.”

Cans count for hungry homeless Keysborough is rallying to feed those in need. The Keysborough Resident’s Page on Facebook is behind the first Keysborough Food Drive on Sunday 25 September. Donations will go to Foodbank Victoria. “A basic meal three times a day is a necessity a lot of Australians can’t afford,” organiser Ben Nguyen said. The Barry Plant real estate agent said that 105,000 people in Australia were homeless and 2.2 million Australians lived in poverty. “It’s really easy to get involved,” he said. “Now is the time to empty the back of your pantry, or perhaps add few extra items to your grocery list. “Whether it’s one can or 100 cans you can be sure that your donation will end up on the plates of those who need it most.” Mr Nguyen said the Facebook page had attracted about 3000 followers since he started it two years ago. “I thought I might as well leverage off that and
do something positive,” he said. “I’ve been really surprised by the generosity so far.” He also pledged in a Facebook post to make a cash donation equal to one hot meal for every like the post received. At last count more than 430 people had given it the blue thumbs up. Those who’d like to contribute can drop off a donation to the Barry Plant Keysborough office at 320 Cheltenham Road between 9am and 6pm Monday to Friday or 9am and 5pm Saturday. They can also visit the Facebook event page and register to have their donation picked up from their doorstep on Sunday 25 September. There’s now no doubt that Melbourne Salvo can down a Dandee Donut at high-speed - and high volume. He took out the Dandee Donut Eating Competition at Dandenong Market on Sunday 4 September. Over five two-minute rounds, 25 doughnut fans devoured as many of the deep-fried, jamfilled, sugar-coated balls as they could. The contestant who ate the most doughnuts in each round went through to the final, where they competed to see how quickly they could eat 20 Dandee Donuts. Melbourne Savo had scoffed down 17 when the last of his opponents waved the white flag. He was crowned the Dandee Donut Champion and took home $200 in Dandenong Market vouchers. The Dandenong Evening VIEW Club raised $600 for The Smith Family’s Learning for Life program at a dinner in Dandenong on Wednesday 31 August. About 60 members and guests attended the three-course event at the St John’s Regional College Graduates’ Restaurant. VIEW stands for Voice, Interests and Education of Women. The Dandenong group meets once a month and has helped children to escape from disadvantage through education for the

The man was asked by a Dandenong Magistrates’ Court judge why he should be released on bail. Representing himself, the man paused and said: “I can’t think at the minute.� A concerned Greater Dandenong resident tipped off the Journal to council workers using body cameras. But it turns out it’s no secret. City planning, design and amenity director Jody Bosman said the council’s authorised officers wore the devices for protection and to gather evidence, and were entitled to do so. To claims that the cameras were camouflaged, Mr Bosman said they were actually brightly coloured and displayed a flashing LED when in use.
Noodle network The Indonesian Women’s Friendship Network is helping Greater Dandenong women to socialise and connect through fun activities. It’s been holding free activities for mums and their children at Noble Park Community Centre, including a cooking class on Friday 2 September featuring Malaysian food, Singapore noodles and other dishes. From 10am to noon each Friday until 9 December, IWFN will host sessions at 41 Menzies Avenue, Dandenong North. “We will share together fruit, drink and traditional foods and all are welcome, especially women, mothers with their children,� spokeswoman Nika Suwarsih said. “It’s time to get together, socialise and network.� The group holds multicultural playgroup and wellbeing groups, cooking classes and lunches. Its purpose is to socialise and connect women for friendship, support, information, activities, celebration, education, workshops, festival and networking. The playgroup runs from 10am to 11am and includes singing, reading, writing, drawing, poem reciting, music, dancing, storytelling, and art and craft.
The wellbeing group, from 10.15am to 11am, caters for active mums and children with aerobics, yoga, Pilates, meditation, dancing, laughter therapy, relaxation and group counselling. Participants can also try music, singing, poem recitals and writing, and attend information sessions, workshops, training, discussions and networking. The multicultural cooking classes share food from different cultures, and give participants the chance to then have lunch together and share stories and information. The session runs from 11am to noon. The IWFN activities are supported by the City of Greater Dandenong, the State Government and the Victorian Immigrant and Refugee Women’s Coalition (VIRWC). By Casey Neill Dandenong West Primary School students raised more than $1400 to buy Christmas presents for children in need overseas. They organised and held a fete at the Dandenong Baptist Church on Saturday 3 September with help from Dandenong Baptist Church youth community worker Abby Weller. They had aimed to bring in $1000 to deliver gifts overseas through Operation Christmas Child. “We raised $1443 between stallholder bookings, a sausage sizzle, jumping castle, bake sale, and garage sale,” she said. “While the morning started off cold we were very happy that the sun came out which brought with it a buzz of people.” Ms Weller said the CFA stopped by to hold a demonstration and “the pastor at Dandenong Baptist Church was giving out Harley rides!” The Grades 5 and 6 students who ran the day participate in Youth Unlimited, which is a weekly after-school program held at the school by volunteers. “I’m so incredibly proud of our youth students and the way they carried themselves on the day,” Ms Weller said. “They came excited and full of enthusiasm and I think that showed through to everyone who supported us. “The day couldn’t have gone better. “The next two weeks we will be working on putting our Christmas boxes together, which the kids cannot stop raving about.”

The $5.5 million Abbotts Road duplication is officially open. Politicians celebrated the project’s completion at the Dandenong South site on Tuesday 6 September. The Federal and local government contributed cash to double the major south-east freight link between Park Drive and Remington Drive and the Eumemmering Creek bridge. Greater Dandenong Mayor Heang Tak said Dandenong South was home to many distribution centres, suppliers and stores. “It is an important destination for workers across the region,” he said. “Council has also worked with VicRoads among other contractors to preserve significant trees along Abbotts Road and care was taken during the design and construction of the project to preserve Aboriginal cultural heritage.” Federal Infrastructure and Transport Minister Darren Chester said the south-east was growing strongly, and it was important for infrastructure to keep pace with population and economic activity. Supermarket chain Aldi has a warehouse on Produce Drive and contributed $280,000 to a new road link to Abbotts Road.

Police are appealing for information about a car fire in Noble Park. A thief stole the red 2012 Holden Cruze after its owner left it unlocked, and with the keys inside at a Narre Warren service station, just after 8am on Sunday 4 September. The service station is at the Webb Street and Princes Highway intersection. Someone torched the car at a car park on Douglas Street, Noble Park, about 6.20am on Monday 5 September. The CFA attended and extinguished the fire. The car was towed for forensic examination.

Hanging out for some special time Parents are being encouraged to cook something with their kids in the school holidays because spending intentional uninterrupted time with a child has infinite rewards. No matter the quantity or quality of the toys they may have, it will never compare to simply being with their parents. Child development experts suggest that these little bits of special time will add up to an increased trust and emotional/ relational bond that will enable a child to feel secure and less likely to act out negatively for attention. These experiences will also set a foundation for the future relationship with a parent to thrive even as they grow more and more independent. Parents should strive to have several five to 15 minutes periods of special time rather than engaging for one long block of time with toddlers and pre-schoolers. Special time provides children with some structured way of knowing when their parents are available. It will meet the need they have to feel connected and to have a feeling of security about their place in the family. With sufficient positive interaction, they won’t have to act out negatively in order to get attention. Knowing their parent will spend time with them at planned times throughout the day will encourage better independent play as well. To get started, plan with the child some things that they would like to do. Give them some choices if they cannot think of anything. Later, parents should remind them about the special time they had together and that another special time is coming. Do not take special time away as punishment for poor behaviour earlier in the day. Still strong after half a century By Casey Neill While repairing a grader blade, engineer John Berends asked the owner the machine’s price tag. John was surprised at the answer and said he could make it for half that. “If you can do that you’ve got a good business,” was the customer’s response. On Saturday 3 September, John Berends Implements celebrated its 50th anniversary with an open day at its Dandenong South factory. General manager and John’s son Derrick Berends said staff showed dealers their cutting, welding and spray painting handiwork at the event. “I’m proud of the company, not just my dad, for having started it and got it to where it is,” he said. “But when you see where other companies are, a lot of other companies don’t get to 50 years and still be strong and pushing ahead.” John Berends Implements manufactures tractor attachments that are sold throughout Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands. “Our machinery is for cutting grass, ploughing paddocks, digging holes, grading roads, that sort of thing - pretty much anything that goes on the back for a tractor, we just about make here,” Derrick said. “We produce in volume. We don’t make oneoff machines.” His dad was a Dutch immigrant living in Narre Warren, surrounded by market gardens. “He was a generally engineer. People would come to him to fix a machine or do some repairs,” he said. John saw a gap in the market for locally made products. “He was dealing direct for a number of years,” Derrick said. “It took 10 or more years to get the business up and running to a point where he could start
Son and father team Derrick and John Berends at the open day. 158780 branching to other states. “That’s when we started appointing dealers. “We have a dealer network throughout Australia. “Their customers are farmers, mostly - farmers, councils, contractors.” John, 78, has now taken a backwards step but still stops by most days.

“You a rarely see him in the office. He’ll put on the old overalls and get in there and do what’s required,” Derrick said. “His philosophy was always to build strong, simple and at a fair price. “Some of our machinery now is more advanced, but building it strong is the main thing. “Farmers are tough on their machines.
“A lot of the imported machinery can be not suited to Australian conditions. “They often have to be modified. They can often have problems. “Ours has been built to local conditions. “We test it ourselves, on the farm.” Derrick came on board in 1997, after studying agricultural science at La Trobe University and spending two years with a horticultural seed importer. “The manager who was here working with my dad at the time was moving on,” he said. “I knew the customer base but I didn’t know much about engineering. “My job as the general manger here is really broad. “I do a lot of the field days and shows around to display and exhibit our product, and visit dealers and try to push the product that way.” He manages about 20 employees, some who’ve been on board for more than 30 years. Much like when the company started, Derrick said that only a few other companies manufactured farming implements in Australia. “They were once Australian manufacturers but they’re now importers,” he said. “They get parts in and assemble here, or take it out of the box. “The last 10 years, particularly, there has been an influx of cheap products from China. “In some regards it’s done us a favour. “It’s put the focus back on why our product is so good in the first place. “We just recently got accredited with the Australian Made logo. “We decided that was an important aspect of our business.” He said the green and gold triangle particularly appealed to dealers with service and spare parts in mind. “They know we’ve been here 50 years and we’ll be here for a long time,” he said.
Pathways to employment mapped out as students urged to succeed By Casey Neill Find a passion and set goals were the top pieces of advice handed to about 200 Greater Dandenong and Casey students on Tuesday 6 September. The annual Lunch with the Winners at Sandown Racecourse featured Dr Jordan Nguyen as guest speaker, ‘winners’ Quintin Whitehead, Bianca Santos and Guillaume Nyakaboyi, and futurist Marcus Barber. SEBN manager Sandra George said the event’s aim was to show students the many pathways to employment. “We hope the guest speakers will inspire you, as next generation of leaders, to follow your dreams,” she said. The event was a partnership between SEBN and South East Local and Learning Employment Network (SELLEN). Ms George told students that key employability attributes included communication skills, getting along with others, a positive attitude, motivation, and being well-presented. “Leaving school with Year 12 or Certificate III gives you the best stepping stone to employment,” she said. “The employment market out here is very positive. “Manufacturing is still the largest employer, and it is growing out here. “Today, manufacturing is sophisticated, it requires you to take your brain to it and it requires diverse skills.” Dr Nguyen was “pretty lost through high school” and struggled through his first semester of electrical engineering studies at university. Spending a day unable to move after hitting his head in a pool gave him a new direction. “I wondered what would have happened if I couldn’t walk,” he said. “Suddenly, I had purpose in my life.” Dr Nguyen decided to harness the power of the mind and created a wheelchair that tapped into electrical signals from the brain. Veterinary science inspired the chair’s horselike vision that steers it around obstacles. Guest speaker Jordan Nguyen. “If you don’t know where you’re wanting to go in life, how are you going to get there? “If I have a goal, I’ll constantly move towards it.” Mr Whitehead didn’t grow up dreaming of becoming the quality and improvement manager at AG Coombs. He didn’t know what he wanted to do when he was at school, but found a job and put his hand up for every opportunity offered to progress through the company. “Successful for me is having a family I’m proud of and a job that I enjoy going to every day,” he said. Ms Santos, 22, felt pressure from her parents to attend uni but found it wasn’t for her. She dropped out, got a tattoo apprenticeship
and started volunteering for gaming events. Through a gamers festival at Chisholm she received a job at the institute, has completed two certificates and is onto a third. “If you surround yourself with the things that you love, even if you don’t know what you’re going to do in the future, that’s okay,” she said. Mr Nyakaboyi was born in conflict-ravaged Burundi, Africa. He completed primary school in a refugee camp in Tanzania. He arrived in Australia six years ago, and is studying chemical engineering and pharmaceutical science at Monash University. “Whatever you want to do, go and do it with passion and power and talent, and you will get there,” he said.
Mr Barber ran through the bare essentials all students in the room would need for their future career, regardless of the industry. He urged them to collaborate and create with someone they didn’t know each week, keep learning from anyone at any time on any subject, to manage their time and to believe in themselves. “If you’re worried about what other people think of you, your friends are doing the exact same thing, which means no one’s thinking about you. They’re thinking about themselves,” he said. Mr Barber said they would need to know how to analyse and adapt, to persist when things got hard or boring, to problem-solve, and to enact. “You must be able to DO. All of that makes no difference unless you do give yourself a target and do work towards it,” he said.

SPORT Rio was game changer for Olympic hopefuls By Nick Creely Representing one’s country in sport is an exciting experience. Representing one’s country at the Olympic Games in Rio is life changing. Bursting with vibrant culture, and pulsating in history and heritage, Brazil is truly a fabulous country. From practising in a childhood backyard to competing at the Maracana in the heart of Rio, the stories that have emerged from this year’s Olympic Games are truly inspiring. The Olympics bring harmony and solidarity to the world in a two-week spectacle of entertainment. For three local athletes, in particular Narre Warren’s very own badminton champion Sawan Serasinghe, the trip was a truly unforgettable experience. “The atmosphere was amazing. It really only sunk in for me that I am at the Olympic Games when we walked out onto the stadium at the opening ceremony with the rest of the Australian team,” Serasinghe said. The young champion said the lessons he learnt from the games, despite a loss the Chinese Taipei 0-2 in the opening round have been invaluable and will hold him in good stead. “Being the youngest pair, I think most people didn’t expect us to do well against the much older and more experienced pairs. “We managed to play well against those pairs and really challenge them on every point. “I think one of the main things I learnt from the games is that I am good enough to compete against the best of the best in the world, and this motivates me to train even harder and, hopefully, win a medal for Australia at the next Olympic Games in Tokyo,” Serasinghe said. Serasinghe started playing badminton from a young age and through hard work and perseverance has gone on to become an Olympic hero. “I started training at the age of five back in Sri Lanka when my parents first introduced badminton to me. “I think I really fell in love with the sport around the age of 10 when I won my first junior national title.” He also gave an insight into the routine of an athlete and how he prepares for tournaments. “I normally train six days a week, usually two to three sessions a day. That can vary between oncourt training and off-court training in the gym. “The Australian national team is based in Melbourne, so all my on court training is done at The Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre and all of my strength and conditioning training is at the Victorian Institute of Sport in Albert Park,” he said. Serasinghe is setting his sights on the next lot of major tournaments and is excited about the prospect of representing his country once again. “Currently I am preparing to head off to Europe at the end of October to play the European circuit.
Sawan Serasinghe before the Rio Olympics 2016. 157111 “My main goal is to win a medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast. “I think playing in front of your home crowd will be an amazing experience and I am definitely looking forward to that,” Serasinghe said. Other local heroes, hockey’s Chris Cirvello from Endeavour Hills and table tennis player Heming Hu from Dandenong proudly represented Australia at the games. Cirvello, 30, represented the Australian men’s
hockey team in his second appearance at the Olympic Games, where the team lost the quarterfinals 0-4 to a star studded Netherlands outfit. Heming Hu, 22, competed in the table tennis event with fellow team mates David Powell and Chris Yan, before going down 0-3 to Hong Kong. Despite the trio’s best efforts and a typical fighting spirit from the Australians, they will now need to set their sights on Olympic glory in Tokyo 2020.
Jubilee marks racing history While Sandown Park celebrated its diamond jubilee on Thursday night, 8 September, the story of greyhound racing in Springvale dates back much further. In 1933, two prominent coursing identities of the day, Jack McKenna and Roy Maidment, colluded on an idea to promote Plumpton Coursing and Track Speed Coursing at the site now occupied by the Sandown thoroughbred course. With the assistance of some influential coursing enthusiasts, the existing horse training establishment lease was relinquished and despite the wettest winter on record, speed coursing commenced in September 1935. Racing continued until 1942 when the grounds were used by the US Army, and resumed in 1944. By this time the venue had become the “Mecca of Victorian Speed Track Racing” due to the renowned strength of the betting ring and near faultless racing on both the straight and circle track. The club made a failed attempt to purchase the site in 1947 before the Melbourne Racing Club successfully acquired the land in 1948 with plans to build a new state-ofthe-art thoroughbred track. The Sandown Park Coursing Club was given three years before works would begin on the new race track. In 1950, McKenna negotiated the purchase of the land on Lightwood Road located on the other side of the railway line. The site was owned by three different interests, and following a period of negotiation, the 19 acre parcel of land was purchased for £9200. Works began almost immediately with equipment and other infrastructure being transferred from the old site to the new, however works ground to a halt when Dandenong Shire Council voted 11-1 against granting approval for the club to operate on the site. McKenna was given the opportunity to address the full council which duly reversed the decision to unanimous approval. Racing on the new track, comprising a horseshoe and straight track, commenced in September 1952 with just three weeks of racing lost in the transition between the venues. The government issued two licences for the promotion of non-proprietary racing in metropolitan Melbourne. The National Coursing Association of Australia organised the formation and registration of a company, the National Coursing Association to manage of the licences, while the Greyhound Owners, Trainers and Breeders Association managed the other. Confusion between the names of the National Coursing Association of Victoria and the National Coursing Association saw the later change its name to the Sandown Greyhound Racing Company and later the Sandown Greyhound Racing Club.
From fantasy to fact, the Super League hits its highs By Russell Bennett Just about every NBA fan or basketball fan, more generally, is involved in yearly fantasy competitions where they “draft” their own teams and compete against their friends. But Pakenham Warriors Big V Youth League men’s coach Simo Pajdic has taken that to a new level and created his own actual league, featuring real players in real teams filled from a real draft. The South East Super League (SESL) - backed by major sponsor Ash Mason From Stockdale and Leggo in Pakenham - tips off at the new Officer Community Hub this Sunday. Blacka, who is also an assistant coach to Pajdic in the Warriors Youth League men’s set-up, said the competition was set up to fill in the gap of the Big V off-season. “Simo said it would be cool to do something of the nature of having a competition in the off-season with an NBA-style draft and where we could make trades,” Blacka said. “It was early in the Youth League season. We were discussing it and then it was put on the backburner, but we discussed it a bit more and over the past two months we got together and made it happen.” The six teams each have eight-man rosters, which includes free agent ‘signings’. Players from a wide range of Big V clubs are
represented in the SESL. They include Pakenham, Western Port, Mornington, Dandenong, Sherbrooke, Keysborough and Melbourne. Each team will face each other twice throughout the season, with a playoff series to follow. Games will be held every Sunday at the Officer hub in three different timeslots. Prizemoney will be awarded at the end of every season, with the winning team also holding the championship trophy. Aligned Leisure, who runs the Officer Hub, has thrown its support behind the league which is affiliated with the Pakenham and District Basketball Association (PDBA). The first game of the inaugural SESL season tips off this Sunday from 2pm with the Vikings taking on the Crocs.

Tin hare for the dogs on track

ing any opportunities for malpractice”. One of the oddities of the track was a large clock above the scratching board. Its origins are unclear, but its year of manufacture was 1876. Transport to the track was by train on the Dandenong line to Springvale Station. Ddespite being expected to open within “about three years”
Sticky start but there were high hopes for new track Nine months after construction of the circuit began, Sandown Park was set for its gala opening on Saturday 8 September 1956. That year was a difficult period for night-time entertainment. With the city abuzz ahead of November’s summer Olympics, Melbournians were also welcoming a revolutionary invention into their family home - the television. Regardless, the much anticipated reopening of the £80,000 modern track and return of the ‘tin hare’ drew people from around the city to Springvale. Media reports of the time vary in their assessment of the crowd, with sources reporting anywhere from 6000 to more than 7000 people attending opening night. Many caught the train special train from Flinders Street to Springvale because Sandown Park station wouldn’t open for another eight years. The crowd may have been much larger had inclement weather leading into the night not created its own set of issues.

As a result, more than 1000 patrons were unable to make it to the track. And those that did were greeted by a boggy car park, with many cars buried up to their hub caps.
of the track opening, Sandown Park station did not open to the public until 1965. A special train departed from platform six at Flinders Street station at 6.45pm, returning at 11.05pm. Parlour coaches from Batman Avenue and taxis from Flinders Street were also available.

While there issues outside the track, there were few inside. The 10 race card kicked off at 7.45pm. The feature event on the night saw Ballarat champion Clear Orb take on the winner of the 540 yard championship of Tasmania, Ophie Kitty. Clear Orb was sent to the boxes a 5/4 favourite, and despite a poor getaway, proved far too good to score by five lengths. His winning time of 31.30 seconds was the fastest of the night over the 555 yard journey. Opening night at Sandown Park proved a raging success. The Sporting Globe reported “the track looked a real colourful picture, lighting was perfect and racing was quite good considering the short experience greyhounds have had at the track. “(There are) hopes that it will be the first step towards transforming greyhound racing in Melbourne to a degree of popularity equal to Sydney, Tasmania and overseas countries.” Six decades later, those hopes have been well and truly exceeded.

Greyhound racing changed forever in 1956 when the ‘tin hare’ returned with the opening of the new Sandown Park greyhound track. ‘Tin hare’ racing, much like today’s mechanical lure racing, had made one previous appearance at the White City circuit in 1927. Cars were parked more than a mile from the track as a crowd of more than 30,000 people forced the organisers to throw open the gates. Legislation prohibiting the sport had been drafted but not enacted before the meeting but with the bill’s ascension the sport continued in its traditional formats. After years of lobbying, privately owned and operated proprietary racing was outlawed in 1955 and not for profit non-proprietary racing behind the tin hare legalised under licence by the new Greyhound Racing Control Board. The National Coursing Association of Victoria formed the non-proprietary Sandown Greyhound Racing Club, as it would come to be known, and promoted one of the two metropolitan greyhound racing licences. It had purchased the land from the Sandown Park Coursing Club greyhound racing in 1955 for £55,000, and invested a further £25,000 on converting the existing horseshoe/straight track into a modern circle track and upgrading amenities. More than 9000 square yards of pack filling, top soil, cinders and crushed rock was used on the new circuit, with the established grass coming from the previous track. The track and grounds were laid out by Arthur W. Purnell, the well regarded architect who also designed the MCG’s Olympic Stand and conversion of the MCG ahead of the 1956 Olympic Games. The design for the new track was based on White City in London and Newcastle in New South Wales. The result was a spacious, 460-yard grass track with racing distances of 555 yards and 785 yards, or 420m, 507m and 717m. Two new grandstands and a sloped asphalt

MOTORING When lots of oomph isn’t enough By Ewan Kennedy FOR those drivers who feel that lots of performance isn’t quite enough, BMW Australia is now importing the BMW M3 Competition sedan, and M4 Competition coupe and convertible. Our test week in the hottest BMW M3 sedan was an extremely enjoyable one. M3 Competition has even stronger engine performance, recalibrated steering, suspension and stability settings than the standard M3. Its springs are 15 per cent stiffer and the Adaptive M suspension has firmer damper settings across Comfort, Sport and Sport+ modes. Sourced from BMW Individual, the M3 Competition package has Shadow Line exterior trim. A black high-gloss finish highlights the BMW kidney grille, side gills, window trims and rear model badge. The quad tailpipes of the M sports exhaust system are also in black high-gloss. The wheels sit inside bulging wheel arches and the long bonnet features a power dome in its centre. Inside are exclusive M leather trimmed seats with cut-outs to reduce weight. Woven BMW M stripes stitched into the seat belts add further allure to the interior. As well has having superb active safety, the ability to avoid a crash, the BMW M3 Competition also has the company’s Active Crash Protection system. This activates a series of protective measures if it senses a crash is imminent, including closing the windows and sunroof (if fitted), tightening the seat belts, and post-collision. At low revs and speeds you do feel some turbo lag, but once that’s passed the M3 Competition is a stunner, with fast response. What BMW likes to call ‘track-honed acoustics’ give the M3 all the right crackles and spits when driving in anything

The dual-clutch gearbox can be a bit cranky at times at very low speeds in parking situations and the wide tyres can also add to the difficulty. Handling is limpet-like thanks to the basic standard balance of the car and further aided by
the excellent Competition features built into the suspension, steering and tyres. The feel through the steering is spot on, with just the right amount of power assistance. Comfort does suffer at times, which is hardly unexpected given the stiffer suspension items.
Tyre noise is also a factor. BMW’s latest M3, the Competition variant will bring a smile to the faces of any keen driver, all the more so if they do decide to take it on track days and really put ‘competition’ into their lives in the true sense of the word.
