Two-way violence By Monique Kuzeff “ALL men are bastards”, according to Meg Ryan in the romantic comedy movie French Kiss, and listening to many commentators one could jokingly (or not) wonder if this be true. However, as much as this stereotype may be highlighted in the media, while some statistics show that one in three women experience violence against them in their lifetime, there are statistics pointing to men experiencing violence. Consider the definition of domestic violence as provided, for example, by the NSW Government’s domestic violence guidelines. Such violence may include driving dangerously, destroying property, abusing pets, blaming a person for all problems in the relationship, sulking, emotional blackmail, threats regarding child custody, withdrawal of interest and a wide galaxy of aberrant or intimidating behaviour not just limited to physical assault and battery. News Weekly interviewed Betty’s Place Adults and Families project manager Danielle Thompson, YES Youth and Family Services CEO Di Glover and

Albury’s Superintendent Evan Quarmby. Ms Thompson said domestic violence constituted a diverse range of abuse including financial, psychological and emotional abuse. “You name it - anything from serious risk of harm and death through to someone who could have suffered long-term isolation by their partner,” Ms Thompson said. “It could be emotional or financial abuse right through to situations of homicide.” Ms Glover said there was more focus surrounding violence against women because they were more often the victims, referring to a number of “national and international statistics” that suggest so. She also added that it may be “more difficult” for male victims to seek assistance because they are “generally” perceived as the dominant. “To be assaulted or controlled by a woman it would be very hard to admit that to friends and family, but at the same time the incidents occur more often by men to women. Learning on the job By Monique Kuzeff THERE’S only so much one can learn from a book but when thrown in the deep end it’s the practical knowledge of how to swim that keeps one afloat. Some 12 Wodonga Tafe VCAL students ranging between 16 to 26 years of age have developed a social enterprise from “scratch” as a part of their certificate two in retail. The social enterprise ‘Social Raw’ has upped the ante on applied learning and is both a retail space and classroom which enables the students to help bridge the professional, social and skills gaps between young people and the business community. It provides the students with a combination of mainstream learning with hands-on practical experience to tackle several problems facing the community. Some of these issues include youth unemployment and lack of community social spaces for young people. The Social Raw shop front is set-

According to Social Raw contributor and student Brodie Hale, a lack of practical skills in young people is a “major contributor” to why it can be difficult for them to obtain work. He said by putting a young person in a practical situation where they must apply their knowledge to

a task it creates better outcomes. “One of the main things young people don’t have that makes it hard for them to get work is experience,” Brodie said. “Studying retail in this type of environment (Social Raw shop front) enables us to gain experience as we learn so when we apply for a job we can say we have the experience. “What I’m getting out of this is that while I’m able to participate in

such a fantastic program, I actually get to have an input in to something that is going to be beneficial for not only myself but others also.” A lack of social spaces within the community is also an issue for the young generation, he said. “We have youth hanging out in the plaza but from time-to-time security is called because they are just loitering out the front. “The Social Raw hub gives them the opportunity to actually hang around the plaza and be a part of the community.” This name of the initiative is supposed to reflect a focus on aspects of social influences in education and work. Last Friday saw the launch of the initiative at Wodonga Plaza which was catered by Boost Juice and Andiamo Street Food. Community leaders were also in attendance including Wodonga mayor Anna Speedie, Wodonga Tafe CEO Mark Dixon and representatives from supporting industry organisations.

Two-way violence is a real worry for authorities However, according to sex therapist, journalist and clinical psychologist Bettina Arndt as recently reported in The Weekend Australian, such statistics need clarification. In her article, Ms Arndt included figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) that show about one in a 100 women experience assault in a domestic setting each year. The same source also shows that one in three women are victims of violence, referring to the number of women who are affected by

violence of any type at any stage of their life, and not just by a partner, but could also include aggression by other women or in non-domestic situations such as in supermarkets or other public places. According to the Australian Institute of Criminology as quoted in Ms Arndt’s article, one woman is killed in Australia per week by her partner. As serious as violence against women is, it should not be overlooked that one male is killed every

30 days by his partner; the same source reports that 52 per cent of child murders are by women. The term ‘domestic violence’ given above as defined by the NSW Government and other bodies, allows ample scope for either sex to experience these abuses given the wide ranging parameters of the definition. The NSW Government guidelines potentially include almost any unpleasant interaction one may experience as a female or male, in a domestic situation.

FIREFIGHTERS and community representatives were joined by Albury MP Greg Aplin and Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) Acting Commissioner Jim Hamilton on Tuesday 6 September to celebrate Albury Civic Fire Station’s centenary of service to the Albury community. The celebration acknowledged the courage and dedication of firefighters who had served the community over the past century. Mr Hamilton said firefighters have been protecting Albury and the surrounding communities since the station was first established on Kiewa Street on 18 August, 1916. “Albury Civic firefighters have responded to all manner of emergencies from this station over the past 100 years, from protecting the community from bushfires and floods, to responding to major building fires,” Mr Hamilton said. “A lot has changed in the fire service over the past 100 years. “Today, the 20 firefighters stationed at Station Albury Civic Fire have modern fire engines and the latest in equipment and technology to ensure the safety and protection of themselves and the local community. “But the one thing that hasn’t changed is the courage and commitment shown by firefighters past and present.” Albury Civic firefighters responded to more than 332 fire and emergency calls in 2014 and 2015 and conducted 44 community education and engagement activities. Mr Aplin announced the arrival of a $450,000 hazardous materials firefighting tanker (HAZMAT) on the day. “The HAZMAT will increase FRNSW’s capability to deal with large incidents, particularly those involving hazardous materials,” he said. “It is a four-wheel drive vehicle that allows firefighters to access fires and other emergencies in difficult terrain. “It has specialist equipment, including storage bins for hazardous materials, fully encapsulated suits, special tools for monitoring the atmosphere for chemicals, and much more.”

Changes are put on the line By Monique Kuzeff CHANGES to staffing hours, service and safety improvements at Albury Railway Station will come in to effect from November. The changes were decided upon following a full assessment conducted by TrainLink earlier this year that looked at changing patterns in ticket sales, customer demand and safety, with negotiations with staff and the unions. The assessment found that over-the-counter ticket sales had decreased - with internet and telephone sales becoming the more popular way of purchasing a ticket. NSW TrainLink data showed that between 1 July 2014 and 30 June 2015 there were no transactions or seat purchases after 10pm. Staff numbers have reduced from eight to now five permanent staff with three full-time and two part-time positions, including a new Area Customer Service Manager. The new staffing hours which will commence from November are Monday to Friday 3.30am to 12am and Saturday and Sunday from 3.30am to 7.30pm. The staff will continue to cover the arrival and departure of all major train services at the station except for the Saturday and Sunday 11.05pm XPT train to Sydney where there will be eight carriage staff available to assist passengers. Mr Aplin said. â€œThe Saturday and Sunday 11.05am service to Sydney was the only service affected by the changes but for that we can assure that there will be eight carriage staff at that time. â€œFour of them will be leaving the train here and the other four will be joining the train, so there will be plenty of staff to help any passengers with ticketing, luggage and boarding the train.â€? During the time staff will be absent over the weekend, Mr Aplin said passengers could be assured that safety, services and toilets would be available. â€œThe focus for us has always

got to be on passenger safety and customer satisfaction,â€? he said. â€œComing in to affect at around the same time as any roster changes there will be high definition CCTV cameras operating and monitoring the station 24-hours a day. â€œThere will also be a help point and that will also enable somebody to access the toilet at night ahead of the 11.05pm service.â€? As a major hub for TrainLink NSW, Albury already has 38 carriage staff based full-time in Albury. Further upgrades are also planned for Albury Railway Station with contracts currently out to tender including two new pedestrian crossings, two new entry ramps, a new family accessible toilet and a drop-off zone.

Nev keeps on truckin’ ten take

By Monique Kuzeff ALBURY man Neville ‘Nev’ Whatman is one of the 69 individuals from across the country to be inducted in to the Shell Rimula Wall of Fame for his ongoing service to the road transport community in Australia. This is the 16th year the National Road Transport Hall of Fame has acknowledged the achievements and commitment of Australians to the road transport industry. Born in 1952, by the age of 10 Nev was already driving his father’s cattle truck, uncle’s hay truck and driving spuds around for his brother

Ross and obtained his truck licence on his 18th birthday. Nev began carting copper tubing and CIG tankers from Sydney, Melbourne, Wollongong, Brisbane, Adelaide, Townsville and Perth after he got married and had two daughters. He averaged about 200,000 kilometres a year. He was awarded a Driver Assessor-Trainer certificate by the NSW Road Transport Industry in 1988 and was also the first driver of the first NSW B-Double. Nev, who was surprised at receiving the Shell Rimula award, still drives the route from Albury to Melbourne

five days a week saying he would need a blood transfusion to get truck driving out of his system. “It’s such a privilege to be inducted into the Shell Rimula Wall of Fame,” he said. “This reunion is a great celebration of the road transport community, and I’m proud to say that I’ve been part of it my entire life.” The event is held in Alice Springs over four days and includes the induction ceremony and the Shell Rimula Inductee Gala Dinner. 1. What is something people don’t know about you? My right ear has a significant permanent hearing loss caused by a childhood illness. 2. What has been the most memorable moment of your life to date? Being in an Atlantis submarine at a depth of 110 feet viewing fish, marine life, and shipwrecks, whilst holidaying in Hawaii. Sightseeing while submerged was sensationally surreal. 3. If you had to choose, what would your last meal on Earth be? An international smorgasbord: Thai green curry prawns, Aussie porterhouse steak, Italian carbonara pasta, Lebanese chicken kebabs. 4. If you could witness any event, past, present or future, what would it be? The heyday of the dinosaurs - the Jurassic period - something no human has seen. 5. What is your favourite television show? That which consistently provides drama, human interest, mysteries, celebration, and a window to the world. Yes, it’s the news. Since my childhood I’ve always wanted to know what’s going on locally, nationally, and internationally. 6. What is your favourite book? I have a collection of books signed by their authors, and “Next to impossible” - the remarkable life of Albert ChalmersBorella VC” is one of them. My father delivered telegrams to Captain Borella in 1945-46, and I was Master of Ceromonies for the unveiling of a plaque recognising Borella’s VC action. Dad and I are quoted in separate chapters and were guests at the book launch - which makes this book more special than most. 7. You are hosting a dinner party and can invite six guests, dead or alive. Who would they be? 1. My paternal grandfather who died before I was born. Apparently we have some similar traits. 2. Victoria’s Secret Supermodel Miranda Kerr - the gorgeous girl from Gunnedah. 3, 4, 5, 6 John Cleese, Michael Palin, Eric Idle, and Terry Jones of Monty Python. In summary, I’d invite a senior citizen, a sexy citizen, and some side-splitting citizens. 8. What has been your most embarrassing moment to date? It’s early evening on a hot summer’s day in 1989. I’ve eaten at Canberra Airport before the flight to Albury. My tie feels tight, the sun is streaming in, it’s a bumpy ride, and I’m regretting my earlier choice of a chicken meal. In front of me is Patricia Gould (Albury mayor) - who bounced me on her knee when I was a baby; to my left is Tim Fischer (Federal Member for Farrer); and in front of him, Gordon Craig (chairman of the AlburyWodonga Development Corporation). In mid-conversation with Tim I realised the summer heat, turbulence, and undercooked chicken were conspiring together. After spending more than half the flight relocating the contents of my digestive system into a bag I was keen to exit the aircraft. 9. If you could live in a particular era, which would you choose? The future. I’d like to take a walk on the wild side and try living in the 23rd or 24th century to see what becomes of this planet, our species, and advancements in science, medicine, and technology. 10. What was the first or best concert you have ever attended? Not the first or best but memorable because of an unusual act. In the early ’90s Motley Crue played in Melbourne. The drummer, Tommy Lee, was strapped into a large gimbal-based rig. He managed to play a drum solo for almost five minutes while spinning around upside down, sideways, rotating, elevating, and at an ever-increasing speed.

Violence campaigners have a ball for cause By Monique Kuzeff BETWEEN April 2015 and March 2015 there were 273 reported incidents of domestic violence in Albury compared with 279 in the previous year, according to the NSW Bureau of Crime statistics. Following a successful White Ribbon Ball put on last year by the City of Wodonga in partnership with AlburyCity Council and the NSW and Victoria Police, AlburyCity Council looks forward to hosting the event this year on 12 November. AlburyCity mayor Henk van de Ven and Wodonga mayor Anna Speedie were pleased to launch the ticket sales of the event on Friday and encourage the community members to come along. The event aims to raise awareness of domestic violence on the Border as well as raise funds to distribute to community organisations focused on raising awareness of the issue. Last year the White Ribbon Ball attracted 200 people and raised about $25,000, but this year the two councils hope to see over 300 people attend. Cr van de Ven said AlburyCity hoped to emulate last year’s White Ribbon Ball but also grow the event. “Today is the launch of ticket sales and they’re available online and we encourage the community to think about coming along,” Cr van de Ven said. “It’s about awareness of domestic violence against women and this year we will have a speaker coming from Perth, Ann O’Neill.” Ann O’Neill is a domestic violence survivor and campaigner and a health and social worker who edu-

Cr Speedie said the collaboration of the two cities sent a strong message right across the Border. “We made a commitment as two councils to raise awareness of domestic violence and share the event with it being in alternate cities each year,” Cr Speedie said. “I think it’s really important to continue that strong message.” According to Wodonga Police Sergeant Shane Martin, Wodonga police are called out to at least one incident involving a family dispute every day. Meditating on organ trade ban By Monique Kuzeff IN a bid to stop the forced organ harvesting and end the prosecution of the traditional meditation practice of Falun Gong in China a group of Falun Gong practitioners visited Albury last week as a part of a 100-city car tour campaign - collecting about 100 signatures on its way through. The traditional meditation practice Falun Gong has united over one hundred million Chinese citizens in “solidarity” before it was prosecuted in China and the Falun Gong prisoners are being used to fuel organ harvesting. The advocates wanted to call on the Prime Minister and the Australian Government ahead of the G20 Summit in China to appeal to the Chinese leader Xi Jinping to stop the forced organ harvesting of prisoners of conscience and end the prosecution of the Falun Gong. According to Ms Zeng, the principles of the Falun Gong go against those of communism. The Falun Gong is a spiritual practice that combines both meditation and exercises based on the tenets of truthfulness, compassion and tolerance. “The nature of Communism is killing,” Ms Zeng said. “We follow truthfulness, compassion and tolerance because it is known to be good for our health and mind." “But Communism doesn’t resonate that,” she said. The traditional meditation practice was introduced in China in 1992 and was prosecuted in 1999 by the then-Communist Party general secretary Jiang Zemin

about 10,000 transplants are performed each year, an update report shows that the Chinese Government is performing between 60,000 to 100,000. “While it was the former leader who issued the prosecution of the Falun Gong, it is the system that is continuing it,” Ms Zeng said. “More than 100 million people practiced Falun Gong between 1992 and 1999 and the Communist Party felt threatened because more and more people were practicing it,” Ms Zeng said. “That number is much larger than the Communist Party members.”

A number of the studentsâ€™ parents and younger siblings also attended the event and got involved on the day. WWPS literacy leader Carly Chenoweth thought the event was a great way to maintain the

attention of the younger students in reading and discussing. â€œKids love characters from books and dressing up encourages them to engage with storytelling and reading,â€? she said. â€œWe were able to read and discuss the books and just get on with that learning. â€œSome of the outfits were absolutely amazing and it was great to have some of their families there as well.â€? Wodonga Council also encourages literacy among children through resources such as the Wodonga Library which includes Story Time, the Story Box Library and groups such as Young Writers.

I am now going to briefly describe the plot of “Nerve“ and I want you to think about what it reminds you of. Nerve is about a girl named Vee joining this online game called Nerve where you complete dares for money. Throughout the movie Vee meets a boy named Ian and gains popularity while completing dares. This feeds into an exciting story of mystery and adventure. Now, think to yourself what does this reminds me of. I’m not a betting man, but I’d be willing to bet that this does not really remind you of anything. That is what Nerve is - a completely intriguing, creative movie and that is what makes this movie good - it is something completely fresh that is interesting throughout. THE Ovenu service is a full cleaning and detailing service. First a pre-clean inspection is completed and then power to the oven is switched off. Many manufacturers will void the warranty if the oven is worked on while live, and for good reason. On one occasion last year when the back panel of a fairly new oven was removed by the Ovenu technician, it was discovered that the element had corroded, through the use of caustic sprays by the previous home owner and would have been “live”, a very dangerous situation had the power not been switched off. Rodney loves Norfolk and did this tour in 2015 and the shows (which are only open to those travelling with the group) were a great success. Even if you’ve been to Norfolk before, you won’t want to miss this. Next year he will also be heading to Vietnam, with the trip departing in November. You will be able to discover the wonders of this mysterious country.

There are plenty of bustling cities, tranquil backwaters, faded colonial elegance and culinary delights that make Vietnam what it is today. This stunning country is also full of glorious history and as you make your way to Mekong Delta, Halong Bay and Ho Chi Minh City you will uncover the fascinating stories that have shaped it. Up to 350,000 Australian pensioners may be negatively affected by asset test changes that come into effect from 1 January 2017, with calls for pensioners to be made aware of how to minimise the potential hit to their hip pockets. It’s spring at Riverwood By Monique Kuzeff

WITH the season of spring now upon us, the new season has bought some changes to the board of Riverwood, after the annual general meeting and election, which was held at the end of August. A large number of Riverwood unit owners attended the meeting, with many new residents attending for their first time since they moved in. It was another successful year with major works and purchases over the past financial year including a new surface for the bowling green a new state of the art nurse call system and a new phone system. Ten village owners nominated for the executive and board positions, who are given the responsibility to attend to the overall running of the village ensuring everything is operating smoothly with the help of management staff at the village.

Because there are only nine positions on the board, this meant that there had to be an election. The residents’ involvement on the board shows that they are passionate about their village and all want to contribute towards its successful running. The new board duly elected comprises president Evelyn Crase, vice-president Harry Hopwood, secretary Jeff Gates, assistant secretary Tric McPhee, treasurer Ian Weaver, assistant treasurer Mary Minchin, and board members Julie Lowe, Carol Johannis, and Sister Kerry Shoemark. Three new members were elected to the board this year and they are excited to be a part of it and can’t wait for the first meeting to be held this month. Everyone also got to enjoy a lovely afternoon tea provided by the kitchen staff after the meeting was closed.

Family show is just Junk JUNK is the brand new family show from the Flying Fruit Fly Circus, following on from their smash hit Circus Under My Bed. This new production premieres at The Cube Wodonga to a season at Sydney Opera House. JUNK is inspired by regional childhood stories of the 1940s and reflects on the childhood of today, questioning the importance of risktaking and creative play for children. Set in a junkyard, the 17 performers - aged between 10 and 19 - use their imagination to transform household trash into magical landscapes, creating ingenious apparatus on which to perform their breathtaking circus skills. JUNK will take audiences on a journey back in time, before children had access to televisions, com-

puters and expensive toys, when the neighbourhood street was a playground full of adventure and makebelieve. Event details: What: JUNK. HOCKEY Albury Wodonga reaches the pointy end of the season at the weekend with grand finals scheduled across four days. On Friday the 16 boys and girls take to the field with Wombats looking for a clean-sweep of the age group. They take on Magpies in the Under 16 boys at 5.45pm with the girls’ side then playing United at 7.30pm. On Saturday it will be the turn of the Under 12s, 14s and Division Three teams. The action starts at 8.30am with the Under 14 boys’ clash between the Wombats and United with the United girls playing Wodonga at 10.15am. The Under 12 boys’ match at noon will be between the Wombats and Magpies with Magpies facing United in the Under 12 girls at 1.30pm. The Division Three matches will see Beechworth looking for a clean sweep, taking on the Norths in the men’s game at 3pm and United at 4.45pm. Sunday will see Division One and two teams fighting for titles and United looking to add all four trophies to its cabinet. In the first game of the day, Division Two men hits off at 10am with Falcons Orange playing United Yellow. Division Two women take the first at 11.45am with Norths Blue taking on

In the men’s match at 1.30pm, the Magpies face United while the women’s game at 3.15pm will be between United and the Norths. Through to the big days A 12 goal final quarter has seen Lavington progress through in the Ovens and Murray Football Netball League semi final at the weekend. Lavington ran out narrow winners 35-33 in a see-sawing match against Yarrawonga at the weekend in the A Grade competition. Lavington had led at the end of the first and second quarters 6-9 and 12 -15. However the Pigeons weren’t going to go down without a fight and fought back with a 13 goal third quarter to end the quarter up 25-23. Strong show all around By Paul Ingwersen PERTH hosted the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) World Gran Fondo championships on the weekend with border riders putting in strong performances against world class fields. The championships require qualification through one of several gran fondo races on the world calendar, such as the Amy Gillette race in Lorne, Victoria. These races combine traditional bunch racing with timed participation for riders of any ability. The events may have riders who have only taken up cycling seriously in the later years, or highly accomplished cyclists such as South Australian Patrick Jonker, 12th in the 1996 Tour de

France, and who was lining up in the 40-45 category. At stake is a UCI rainbow jersey, for either the time trial or road race. Keeping with the race’s prestige, the Perth organisers designed a course that was guaranteed to test local and international riders, a total of 155km for all riders aged under 55, and a shorter 105km for anyone over 55 and the women. The course commenced with a relative flat section of around 50km including racing out of the Perth CBD on the freeway until reaching the finishing circuit near Kalamunda where riders got to tackle the famous zig zag climb, a narrow road, with sections barely wider than a car, up a 4km hill.

The fast start, not surprisingly, saw crashes with big bunches and riders jostling for position on the freeway in the run up to the first climb. The finish was an uphill drag and a tough test that didn’t suit the pure sprinters yet required more strength than a lightweight climber can pump out. Over the multiple grades there were no local podiums but some strong results showing that riders from Albury Wodonga and those that they regularly race with in the interclub series in the region are at world standard for their age. The local Bended Elbow Cycling Team had three representatives with Ken Payne on form following his recent third place in the Wagga to Albury,

coming in 41st after getting dropped on the second major climb of the day. Mark Norden, in his second world championship race, rode well to finish in 20th, just at the back of the second bunch. In the same race, Griffith’s Peter Budd sprinted into 10th place showing his form has held all year. The Bended Elbow’s Terry Halpin, known for his strength on the flats but guaranteed to struggle up the steeper hills, put in a solid ride for the course to finish 77th of the 128 riders in the category. In the 70+ race, Paul Burns, also of the Bended Elbow team, finished 13th in an eventful day. Early in the race, some British rid-

ers had attacked off the front. He helped bring this back and the next attack looked promising. He bridged across with another rider before two dropped back leaving him and a French rider in a two-man break for 30km he couldn’t hold the lead over the final hills, but came home in a world class position. Regional riders pulled in some strong results. Former Australian champion Wayne Hildred from Bright finished in fourth in the 60-64 age group while Robert Marcucci was 13th in the 5054 ahead of former world champion Stephen Fairless of Shepparton while Trent Stephenson, also of Shepparton, finished fifth in the 35-39 race.

Tigers claw through THE Albury Tigers have kicked their way into their eighth Ovens and Murray Football League grand final in a row with a four-goal victory over Lavington at Birallee Park. The Tigers won the second semifinal 11-12 (78) to 7-8 (50) to book their grand final spot. beginning, leading 5-2 to 1-1 at the first break. However, Lavington showed plenty of spirit to trail by just five points at the long break 6-4 to 5-5. But Albury put it to the sword in the second half kicking 3-3 while restricting its opponents to just 1-2. A one-goal one final quarter to Lavington allowed the big-kicking Tigers to come through and take the game and the grand final berth.
