speak up if they were finding it tough to look after their pet. “Don’t ever think there isn’t an option, simply do your research and there are people out there who will help you,” she said. “There is always someone who will put up there hand to help you out.” Ms Grayson it could be as simple as conducting a Google search in order to find help. Among the statistics in the report included 90 issues involving sick or injured animals which did not receive vet treatment. There were 92 reports of animals with insufficient food, 64 with insufficient water and 75 with insufficient shelter. Also damning was the fact that of
the 1154 animals that were abandoned state-wide, 41 of those came from the Yarra Ranges. There were 35 concerns raised about animals being beaten or wounded. Dr Liz Walker, CEO of RSPCA Victoria, said that geographic analysis of cruelty reporting data will support RSPCA Victoria’s efforts to target its prevention activity to the areas that need it most. “RSPCA Victoria’s vision is ending cruelty to all animals – and we know that prevention is the key to ending cruelty,” Dr Walker said. “Over the next 12 months, we will be using this data to help us identify the areas that would benefit most from community education and support.”

THE Yarra Ranges is a hot spot for animal cruelty and more prevention activity needs to be taken, according to the Victoria RSPCA. RSPCA statistics released last week revealed that of the 79 local government areas in Victoria, Yarra Ranges ranked fourth in the number of cases, behind only Casey City, Greater Geelong and Melbourne City council areas. In the Yarra Ranges, welfare concerns for horses, dogs and cats made up most of the issues. From data compiled throughout the 2016 financial year, the RSPCA revealed there were 460 reports received in the Yarra Ranges, with 154 related to horses.
Dogs in the Yarra Ranges also fared incredibly poorly, with 156 cases reported and five related to puppies. Also, 36 cases related to cats and seven for kittens. The concerns revealed were wide ranging, with everything from reports of underweight animals, to concerns raised about hygiene, grooming and housing conditions. Surprisingly, Catherine Grayson from Harmony Reins Animal Haven, which operates in the Yarra Ranges and aims to give neglected animals a second chance, said she wasn’t surprised over the statistics. Ms Grayson said during her time with the animal haven she continues to see cases of animal cruelty in the region. “Sometimes people just don’t un-

Saddle up, BMXers! By Alana Mitchelson COCKATOO youth will soon have access to a BMX track, after years of community lobbying efforts and a growing demand for child-friendly facilities in the town. Cardinia Shire Council has passed a motion to implement the Skate Park and BMX Strategy that has prioritised the construction of a BMX track in Cockatoo. Cockatoo mother-of-two Kathy Phillips said the Cockatoo Township’s BMX Track sub-committee had lobbied for a BMX track for two and a half years. “It’s been a long, drawn-out process, and now we’ve managed to push the BMX track from medium priority to high priority,” Ms Phillips said. “My 13-year-old twins are definitely keen for a BMX track, although I think by the time they complete the project, my kids will be 25. “But it’s important for Cockatoo and it needs to happen. “There’s just nothing for kids to do around here. “There are more than 1200 kids under 15 years old in Cockatoo, yet it’s really lacking in recreational facilities. “We haven’t really got a decent park.” The BMX sub-committee has advocated for the BMX track to be constructed at the southern end of Alma Treloar Reserve. But Cardinia Shire Active Communities manager, Jim Davine, said a suitable site for Cockatoo’s long-awaited BMX track was yet to be determined. “The Alma Treloar Reserve Master Plan is scheduled for review later this year,” Mr Davine said. “The recommendations of the strate-

But, she said, the reserve was too “isolated” and would be a “dangerous” option from a parents’ point of view. Ms Phillips said she hoped the BMX track would mark the beginning of more parks and other new recreational
areas in Cockatoo. “There is an obvious need for more spaces for the children,” she said. “Things like this (BMX track) get the kids outdoors and being active. “Cockatoo school kids aren’t encouraged to ride bikes to school because the roads are not very safe. “I think it will also maybe reduce graffiti and keep kids out of trouble. “It’ll give them a way to burn off their energy and to just hang out with friends. “The BMX track should be some-
where safe and visible, and in a central location to the town so that it would benefit business in the future.” The Skate Park and BMX Strategy in its entirety identifies more than $2 million of works over a 10-year period, with the funding of these projects to be considered as part of the council’s Draft Forward Capital Works Program. Mr Davine said the council would also seek support from external funding bodies to deliver the projects. The strategy took community feedback into account after a consultation period beginning in March.

THE Spring 2016 Firewood Collection Season officially opened on Thursday, 1 September. Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) Regional Manager Forest and Fire Operations Peter Kambouris said the public must use designated areas. “We want to remind people that it will once again be legal to collect firewood from designated areas on public land across Victoria from 1 September 2016 until 30 November 2016,” he said. “Some designated firewood collection areas may not open at the beginning of the Spring 2016 Firewood Season for various reasons, including supply or accessibility due to wet conditions." More information and updates is available at www.delwp.vic.gov.au/ firewood. “DELWP and Parks Victoria staff will be patrolling parks, forests and reserves to ensure people are doing the right thing,” he said. “Firewood collection is only permitted on public land during designated times of the year and from designated firewood collection areas. “It is illegal to sell firewood collected on public land without an appropriate permit or licence or to take more than the allowed amount.” Infringement notices for illegal firewood collection are $622, with maximum penalties for offences under the Forest Act 1958 standing at $7773, one year's imprisonment or both. A YELLINGBO house and shed have been destroyed and two pets killed in a large fire on Tuesday 30 August. Emergency services were called at 4.40pm to a large shed fire, believed to be caused by an electrical fault. The fire engulfed the resident’s shed and home, and was visible from the Yellingbo and Seville fire stations. About 13 CFA tankers and 20 emergency service vehicles from Hillcrest, Seville and Wandin attended the scene, including the SES. In brief A MONBULK man has been treated for head injuries after he was involved in a carjacking in Menzies Creek on Friday 2 September. The 56-year-old man was driving his 2014 silver Holden Calais along Grantulla Road when another vehicle had a rear-end collision with him about 1.30pm. The driver pulled over and exited his vehicle to inspect the damaged when two males of African appearance emerged from the other car armed with a baseball bat. The offenders hit the man over the head with the bat, causing lacerations and minor head injuries, before driving off in his car with the offenders' car following. A third driver came across the injured man on the side of the road and notified police. The Monbulk man was taken to hospital for assessment, but was later released. Police urge anyone with information about the incident to contact the Belgrave police station.
By Victoria Stone-Meadows MP for Monbulk and Deputy Premier James Merlino has adopted an exracing greyhound, but says having the new dog in his life doesn’t change his opinion of the dog racing industry. Mr Merlino and his family drove all the way from their home in Montrose to Ballarat where they met twoyear-old blue greyhound Sara. “The Greyhound Adoption Program (GAP) had an adoption day at Ballarat, so Megs and I put the kids in the car; we drove to Ballarat and we met Sara as well as a whole bunch of other dogs,” he said. Mr Merlino adopted one of 35 dogs that were part of the Ballarat adoption day, but he says Sara was the one that chose them. “The kids loved her and they are such beautiful, gentle animals,” he said. Having both grown up around dogs, Mr Merlino and wife Meagan have always had dogs as part of their family. “We had a beautiful labrador retriever, but he passed away of old age about six months ago,” he said. “A good friend of mine is evangelical about greyhounds, so she was talking to me constantly about how my next dog has to be greyhound, and we never thought of it before. “We went and did a bit of research and went onto the GAP website and they tell the stories about each of the dogs.” Now having seen the adoption program and met a number of ex-racing greyhounds, Mr Merlino said he was confident the greyhound racing industry in Victoria was safe for the hounds. “Greyhound racing is an important industry and through the work that Martin Foley is doing as minister for racing, it’s all about making sure the animals are cared for and there are no practices that hurt the animals at all,” he said.

A SAFE and a cashbox were stolen during a burglary at Kelly’s Bar and Kitchen in Olinda in the early hours of Saturday 3 September. The owner of the bar was alerted about 4.30am that someone has triggered the alarm in the restaurant after two offenders gained entry to the premises. The two offenders forced entry to the building via the French doors at the front and jimmied the fixed safe from its fixings. By the time police and the security company had arrived, the offenders had fled the scene having burgled the property in about four minutes. Police urge anyone who knows about the incident or saw any suspicious people in the area to contact Olinda police station.
Tree crashes: children escape TWO children are lucky to have escaped a large gum tree falling on their bedroom in the early hours of Saturday 2 September. A family were asleep in the Caroline Crescent house in Kalorama when a 12 metre gum tree fell onto the back part of the house where the children’s bedroom was located. Police and Ambulance were called to the property but the children and family were luckily free from injury. The family’s cars were also damaged by the tree and the house sustained extensive damage and is no longer habitable.
Eight Xbox games stolen POLICE are searching for information after Xbox games and a watch were stolen from an Upwey property last week. On Thursday 1 September, unknown persons have forced their way into a property on Rita Street, Upwey, via a window, and stolen eight Microsoft Xbox games and a watch, worth hundreds of dollars. Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit detectives are investigating the burglary, and have asked anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

MY vision for our local area is to create local jobs based on our natural beauty, history and the arts. I made many commitments to the Hills during the election campaign, and I’m now focused on delivering them. Something I have been pursuing for over 10 years now is the National Heritage Listing of the Dandenongs - there are many great things about the Dandenongs and our community that deserve to be preserved and protected, and working on developing access to these things forms a central part of the Ridge Walk commitment. This will be done with community stakeholder consultation through local council and focuses on providing a walk connecting townships throughout the hills with informative stops about local past and present influential artists, encouraging exploration of our land and learning about the great things our arts community offers. This National Heritage Listing application will primarily focus on the famous landscape artists who have lived and worked our area in the past. This includes Austrian-born artist Eugen von Guerard, Indigenous artist Lin Onus, member of the Heidelberg School Tom Roberts, Australian Impressionist Sire Arthur Streeton, Arthur Boyd AC OBE, and poet CJ Dennis who penned “The Songs of a Sentimental Bloke” among many others. This also contributes greatly to the concept of La Trobe developing as a centre of the arts for Victoria with the $10M Federal government delivery for Bunjil Pace in Narre Warren.

Yarra burn-off talks planned
Charges over football incident
YARRA Ranges residents are being invited to have their say about proposed changes to planned burning and fuel management in the region. The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) said the changes relate to areas around Gembrook, Powelltown, Healesville and the surrounding areas. Forest Fire Management Victoria Regional Manager, Peter West, said recent modelling has guided proposed amendments to the way areas are zoned for fuel management. “Strategic planning and fire simulation modelling for this area has highlighted areas where changes to when and where we do planned burns would significantly reduce the fire risk and increase community safety,” Mr West said. “By amending the way some areas are zoned for fuel management purposes, we are modifying the primary reason to conducted planned burns in that area.” The events will be held at Gembrook Community Centre on Saturday, 17 September, from 10am to 1pm. Also, at the Woori Yallock Parks Victoria office on Tuesday, 20 September, from 5pm to 8pm. A HEALESVILLE footballer at the centre of an alleged on-field incident involving Wandin player Robbie Ross, 29, is set to face charges. Knox Police have confirmed the Wandin footballer is set to be charged after an investigation into the incident on 23 July that left Ross in need of facial surgery, according to news reports. On Thursday, 4 August, police confirmed a man had been arrested and questioned over the incident. Ross had surgery on Friday, 29 July, with the ruckman making an incredible recovery and featuring in last weekend’s qualifying final, which again took place between the two teams. In the final, Healesville 18.16(124) defeated reigning premier Wandin 14.15(99). An AFL Yarra Ranges tribunal hearing into the matter has been indefinitely adjourned, with the matter now before the courts.

Letters Stopping smoking I HAVE just read your latest edition of the ‘Mail’ and its very topical ‘Best of the Dandenong Ranges’ (Tuesday, 30 August). It’s very interesting to note the features people comment on are the things we are in fear of losing unless (Yarra Ranges) Council makes our (local) history relevant through a better document than Amendment C148. It really does need a focus. Another example that I’m passionate about is burning off. Your article by Jodie Symonds, ‘Hills are rich in history’ (‘Mail’, 30 August), again is very topical. Her opening statement about a ‘long deep breath of rich crisp air/ aromas’: if you do that on any nice Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Monday (which means basically every day is smoke tainted of course); then you will get a lung full of smoke from all the burn-off fanatics in the Hills! We need a dramatically reduced opportunity for burning off in the Dandenongs to preserve all that’s good up here; surely Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday is more than enough with no burning June, July, August (the wet months). I have written to council on this topic, too; result being “our burning off policy is not due for review until 2018” or something like that ... crazy when smoking is being banned everywhere else! Cakes and coffee THE Village Glee Club’s Three or more voices, is a useful community device. It serves as a self-made protection for village-sized emergencies. In this it should be encouraged and be as excellent in every action as possible. But! When the wind on a hot 37
degrees C day rises from the north west to over 40 kilometres an hour, and you can smell the heat leaching vapour from our vast forests, It is time for a terribly more serious action. It is then that all trained people should have every nerve awake to the smallest piece of smoke and squash these out immediately. It is then time that all our defence forces should have been prepared to stand with all our professional firefighters with equal standards of gear and more especially air capability. To stand also with the Village CFA units whose primary duty is to protect their own home village and to be supplied with cakes and coffee. Barry Callanan, Mt Evelyn.
Champion of the UFU THE amount of emotion being expended by many CFA volunteers in the current dispute is ridiculous. An enterprise bargaining agreement is an agreement between an employer and its employees about the conditions and pay of those employees. The union, on behalf of its members, has a right to negotiate for the best conditions that it can. The current negotiations started under the previous Liberal Government and were allowed to fester on because they saw political advantage in being tough on the unions (for example, as in the paramedics dispute). Paramedics and firefighters had had a gutful at the last state election and supported the party that would seek resolutions. The paramedics’ EBA has been sorted and, as far as I can see, the sky hasn’t fallen in. The CFA dispute has dragged on for over 1000 days, largely because of pig-headedness from
both sides. The previous Victorian Minister for Emergency Services (Jane Garrett) adopted an intransigent attitude because she saw a political advantage to her own ambitions within government. It was not because of a concern for the volunteers' arguments. Her resignation had little to do with the CFA dispute. In his letter ‘Please explain', Dennis Yeats (‘Mail’, 23 August) claims the CFA board, which, for political purposes, was also being intransigent has been replaced with a ‘Yes Minister’ board. He obviously hasn’t seen the ‘Yes Minister’ series. Sir Humphrey was the boss, not the politicians. The Chief Fire Officer’s resignation was a result of his attempt to raise his status (and pay) within the CFA. I do not claim to understand all the clauses of the EBA, but I have read through it looking for anything that gives the United Firefighters Union (UFU) the clout the Volunteer Fire Brigades Victoria (VFBV) claims to be there and cannot find it. Maybe Dennis could advise us where it is. Back when the Dandenong Ranges had paid staff at Belgrave before the (former Victorian Premier Jeff) Kennett cuts, they were regarded as a great asset by many brigades. We have to put aside politics and get back to being a co-operative working organisation. I might add that I am in no way replying on behalf of (Victorian Emergency Services Minister) James Merlino. He and Premier (Daniel) Andrews have replied at length to the dispute and it appears to me their primary aim is to bring the dispute to a conclusion. The young speak out STUDENTS from five local primary schools recently competed in the Rotary Club of Monbulk and District’s inaugural public speaking contest. Monbulk Primary School hosted the event on Wednesday, 17 August. The Grade 5 and 6 students spoke on topics ranging from ‘My favourite pet’ to ‘If I could change the world’. The standard of the speeches was high, so the judges from Toastmasters had great difficulty in separating the candidates.
The eventual winner was Felix Gladkoff of Ferny Creek Primary School, with Harry from Monbulk Primary School in second place and Alyssa from Mountain District Christian School in third place. The speeches were warmly received by an appreciative audience who voted the evening a great success. The local schools were enthusiastic about the concept and it is planned the contest will become an annual event.

SHARING a patient’s story: I had made multiple attempts at dietary programs during years of young children. I had always battled with weight issues, but it was worse after having my three children. I tried Gloria Marshall, Weight Watchers and Jenny Craig, which was a significant financial outlay with little long-term success. At my heaviest weight, I was 110kg. I joined a gym and lost 35kgs over two years. That was back in 2005-’06. Over the next five years, in spite of a personal trainer and going to the gym three times a week, with more financial outlay, I regained 5kg a year (25kg back on). After consulting with Dr Ray McHenry, we made a joint decision to try the Orbera Intra Gastric Balloon. Unfortunately, I was unable to have the balloon due to medical reasons. I was actually relieved I couldn’t have it done, rather than disappointed. After further consultation with Dr McHenry, we decided on the gastric band, which I had done in January 2011. Initially, I had success with weight loss and lost 25kgs. I began to have increasing

Burrinja calls for the many faces of Upwey BURRINJA Cultural Centre is calling on creative-types of all ages and abilities to enter into this year’s ‘Upwey Archies’. In partnership with the Upwey Township Group, Burrinja is inviting artists in the Yarra Ranges region to share an image of someone who is important to them or to the township of Upwey. The initiative is inspired by the iconic Archibald Prize and aims to unite the creative voices and visions of the community. Community clubs and groups, local schools, businesses, families and artists are encouraged to collect an art-board from Burrinja. Entrants can use pencils, paints, collage and mixed media to be a part of the ‘Upwey Archies’. Special mystery prizes will be awarded to stand-out portraits. Art-boards can be collected from Burrinja between 1 and 10 September, while finished artworks need to be delivered between 1 and 8 October at Burrinja. The exhibition will be displayed in the Upwey township

Bennies on board for fun By Victoria Stone-Meadows MELBOURNE based cut snakes The Bennies will be bringing their no-holes-barred brand of high octane musical trash to Belgrave’s Sooki Lounge on Wednesday 17 September. The band members described themselves as “your agerage average Psychedelic Reggae Ska Doom Metal Punk Rock From Hell.” Bassist and vocalist of the band Craig Selak said the gig will be one to remember and issued a challenge to the audience not to enjoy the show. “It’s gonna be super high energy with sh*t loads of high fives and people losing sh*t but looking after each other,” he said.
“I dare people to leave the show with a frown on their face, I f@#$ing dare ya.” While the band says they haven’t had a chance to spend much time in the Dandenongs before, they are keen to come out to Belgrave and have a great time. “We have a couple of good friends from Belgrave and I remember it from the train line when I used to skate a lot,” Selak said. “We are really looking forward to meeting a few people, sinking beers and having a good time.” The show at Sooki Lounge is part of an Australian east coast tour that sees The Bennies travelling with American punk act Rozwell Kid on their
first trip to Australia. The tour will include shows in Belgrave, Melbourne, Mornington, Bendigo on their way to larger festivals such as Poison City Weekender, Stonecutters and I Love Life. Selak said the band loves playing gigs of all sizes and is just happy to make its audiences happy. “We play all different sized venues and love to mix it up, big and small, doesn’t matter,” he said “If people want to watch us play then we want to play for them.” Tickets for The Bennies and Rozwell Kid are available from the Sooki Lounge website at www.sookilounge.com.au.

EMBRACE of the Serpent is an engrossing, confronting experience with some questionable narrative choices. In 1909, German scientist Theo (Jan Bijvoet) explores the Amazon with shaman Karamakate (Nilbio Torres) in search of a sacred plant that will cure his illness. Shot in moody black and white, this slow but hypnotic film vividly and unflinchingly depicts the brutal, corruptive in-
fluence white imperialism and the voracious rubber industry had on native communities. The film also challenges our preconceived perspectives of its characters, both in our assumption of Theo’s inherent white arrogance and the patronising cultural notion of natives like Karamakate as ’noble savages’. Karamakate is hot-headed and seen to have lost his wisdom in his old age, which he gradually rediscovers in a second journey with an American botanist in 1940. Sadly, Embrace of the Serpent disappoints with its tension and structure. Theo’s illness is barely evi-
dent for two-thirds of the film, and only shows symptoms when dramatically convenient, as a way of punishing Theo for defying local tradition. The film cuts to the 1940 journey very awkwardly, and while it provides engaging character moments for Karamakate and a chilling sequence in a pseudo-Christian cult descended from the orphanage/ monastery in 1909, it does dilute the impact of Theo’s journey. An excellent work of character and atmosphere, Embrace of the Serpent still needed a more focused narrative. - Seth Lukas Hynes

Magpies are swooping in WITH the arrival of the high season for swooping magpie attacks, the Australian Veterinary Association (AVA) is warning people to take precautions around places where magpies nest. Native birds such as Australian magpies are highly protective of their eggs, nest and young and will often swoop at unsuspecting passers-by if they feel threatened. President of the AVA, Dr Robert Johnson, said that some magpies could become highly aggressive during breeding season, from late
August to early October. “Fast-moving objects such as people and bikes and anyone who moves directly towards their nests are perceived as threats and are likely to be swooped,” he said. “Dog walkers and toddlers in prams are also a common target. “Tolerance is the best policy. “We need to appreciate that some magpies will defend their territory from intruders because of a natural instinct to protect their offspring.”
BOX Hill Institute’s Lilydale Lakeside Campus will have access to guaranteed funding to secure its students’ future, according to Monbulk MP, James Merlino. When announcing Victorian Government changes to TAFE in the state, the Education Minister said the 'Skills First’ initiative would ensure quality training for the region so workers of the future will have valued skills. ‘Skills First’ features a more focused training system, with $114 million in additional funding on offer for Victoria’s TAFEs. Each year, Victoria’s training providers will have access to three targeted funding streams from the start of next year, including the $40 million Workforce Training Innovation Fund which aims to promote innovative training and skills in emerging and priority industries. Mr Merlino said the change would have direct benefits for the region. “This new model will help secure the future of training and TAFE in the outer east,” he said. “It will mean a strong and stable TAFE in Lilydale, and will mean students in the area can be confident that they are getting real training for real jobs.”

Medal force By Dennis Fuller EMERALD GOLF THE September VGL monthly medal was on the board at Emerald Golf Club last Saturday with the weather gods smiling (or at least smirking!) on the course. Ken Hill (17) came in early with a nett 68 and then had to sit smoking the cherrywood while the rest of the field straggled in, in various states of disrepair. Hill’s wait was rewarded with the medal and the cash that went with it. Ian Cranston (23) was the winner in B Grade when his nett 69 was good enough to beat Peter Jones (23) and Dave Mackey (23), on a countback. Leigh Morison (17) was the only other player to better his handicap with 69, while Peter Glasscock (14) and John Keys (16) both played theirs for 70. Once again John Fisher was nearest the pin on the 4th, Peter Glasscock the 7th, Dave Aitken the 12th, John Carvill the 13th while Hill polished off his day by winning the pro pin on the 18th. Ross Martin eclipsed all the long hitters on the first with a beautifully long and straight drive. The ever consistent Brianna McCoy starred in the ladies’ event with a consistent display of precision golf. Ducks were in all kinds of rows for the Old and Feeble Golfers on Wednesday with a stableford event on the menu. A lot of players belted the course but were all headed by B. McCoy who managed 45 points. Moss Fuller was next with 42 while a swish of golfers including Philip Crossley, John Piggott, Seppy Krummenacher and Graham White all on 40.

A marathon effort by runners By Jamie Strudley YARRA RANGES ATHLETICS THE annual Athletics Victoria Half Marathon is looked forward to for numerous reasons each year: Father’s Day, bucket list, personal best or fun run! Many of the Yarra Ranges Athletics athletes were competing in their first ever half marathon, approaching it with feelings of excitement, dread and trepidation. All that disappears once the start-
ers gun goes and the 600-plus athletes thunder off along the fast, flat Yarra Boulevard circuit. Up the pointy end, the state’s best athletes are racing along at three minutes per kilometre, further back the social runners are enjoying a more leisurely pace. The most impressive performances came from James Laven and Veida Somerville. Congratulations also to James, Claire Knell and Laura DiGregorio
for completing their first half marathon. The club’s junior athletes also raced; all running a fast 6km course. Some excellent running from all our juniors with the highlights being Georgia Laven securing the Under 16 Girls Individual Series win and our Under 14 boys winning the teams event and securing the Under 14 Boys Series team title. Thanks went to the non-competing support crew who jumped to the
aid of the race organisers to manage the water station. The next club event is this Saturday, 10 September, when they have their summer season “Launch at the Lake”. The event involves the club partnering with Lillydale Lake Park Run and Yarra Ranges Shire to hold a “come and try, see and do day” at Lillydale Lake. Motoring Colorado makes its debut THE new 2017 Holden Colorado recently made its public debut at ANZ stadium in the final game of the 2016 State of Origin series. The redesigned Colorado is introduced with fresh styling, an extended range of accessories and a raft of hightech additions from advanced connectivity to active safety features. Holden’s Executive Director Sales, Peter Keley, says the redesigned Colorado is a key vehicle in Holden’s future product portfolio and its progressive new styling, improved driveability and leading technology content are sure to be a hit with customers. “Colorado has resonated well with customers in a segment that has almost doubled in sales in the last 10 years, and we’re confident the new 2017 Colorado will build on this and redefine customer expectations of what a truck can be,” Mr Keley said. “Not only does it come with fresh new styling, it also offers car-like refinement, ride and handling as well as vehicle technologies unique to this segment including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. “Colorado is also the only vehicle in the 4x4 utility vehicle segment to offer remote window activation - a feature we expect to be popular with customers in hot climate parts of Australia.” The 2017 Colorado retains the same assured off-road capability of its predecessor, but adds impressive on-road refinement and a go-anywhere spirit driven by advanced technology. Poor ratings for used cars in the safety stakes VICTORIA’S leading transport advocates say it’s disappointing that almost one-third of vehicles tested in the 2016 Used Car Safety Ratings (UCSR), scored a Poor or Very Poor rating for occupant crash safety protection. The ratings are based on work by the Monash University Accident Research Centre (MUARC) in conjunction with the RACV, TAC and VicRoads. Of the 266 vehicles rated, 96 models were in the Poor or Very Poor category and RACV Manager Vehicle Engineering, Michael Case said the results were disappointing. “There will always be vehicles that rate poorly in these types of studies, but to see more than a third with a poor or very poor rating is discouraging. We would recommend anyone looking for a used car, to give these
models a wide berth.” Mr Case said overall the smaller vehicles fared the worst when it came to safety, with a whopping 58 per cent of vehicles in the Light Car category receiving a Very Poor rating. “The smaller vehicle categories are a massive concern. We would advise buyers to do their homework when purchasing a pre-owned small vehicle.” Around 10 per cent of the vehicles rated earned the coveted Safe Pick rating. A Safe Pick car must achieve a five-star rating and have Stability Control fitted. In addition to protecting occupants, Safe Pick rated vehicles provide good protection for other road users including occupants of other vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists, in the event of a crash. Historically commercial vehicles
have received a bad UCSR report card, however seven out of the 11 vans rated in the 2016 study scored excellent ratings, with four gaining the Safe Pick tag. “This is a major leap in safety for this market group which in the past has performed very badly. This tells us commercial vehicle manufacturers have taken on board the poor results of past years and are now making concerted efforts to improve safety features in these vehicles and frankly it’s about time.” Mr Case said the 2016 UCSR results again confirmed that safety didn’t have to be compromised by price, with many of the top rating used vehicles priced at less than $10,000. “You don’t have to spend a fortune to buy a safe car. For example a Safe
Pick FG Falcon (2008-'14) can be bought for under $8,000.” Mr Case said it was pleasing to note there were six Safe Pick vehicles in the Large SUV category as these vehicles had been labelled a risk to other road users in the past. MUARC Senior Research Fellow, Dr Stuart Newstead said the 2016 UCSR guide was an excellent resource for those looking to purchase a safe, secondhand vehicle because they measured the performance of these cars in real crashes. “A driver of the worst vehicle rated is more than six times as likely to be killed or seriously injured in a crash, compared with having the same type of crash while driving in the best vehicle. “It is particularly important that young drivers are behind the wheel
of one of the top-rated vehicles, given that they have a higher than average crash rate,” he said. The ratings are based on reports from more than seven million actual crashes from 1987-2014 reported to police in Australia and New Zealand. They cover more than 90 per cent of popular passenger and light commercial vehicles in the Australian market, manufactured between 1982 and 2014. The Vehicle Safety Research Group which commissioned the research is comprised of the major motoring clubs and state motoring authorities in Australia and New Zealand and is a collaborative effort to drive down the road toll.
