The Japanese delegation. important step in boosting Japanese interest in Queensland wine, capitalising on the recent lowering of trade barriers under the Japan-Australia Economic Partnership Agreement (JAEPA). “Winetree is determined to assist the growth of premium Australian wines in Japan, Asia’s second-
largest wine market, in partnership with leading wine makers such as Sirromet,” Mr Nagata said. “With a sophisticated and expanding customer base, Japan offers an enormous opportunity for Australian wine, which thanks to JAEPA can now compete on a level playing field with its New World rivals.”

A DELEGATION of leading wine sommeliers and media representatives from Japan has further enhanced the Granite Belt’s growing international reputation as one of Australia’s elite wine destinations. Organised by five-star Queensland winery Sirromet Wines in collaboration with Winetree, a member of the Tokyo-based Global Sky Group, the nearly week-long tour encompassed visits to Sirromet’s Seven Scenes, St Judes and Night Sky Vineyards, along with its state-of-the-art flagship winery at Mount Cotton. The Granite Belt tour also included visits to local winemakers Ballandean Estate, Golden Grove, Symphony Hill and Tobin Wines, highlighting the range of quality wines currently being produced in the south-west Queensland premier wine region. The seven-member Japanese delegation was accompanied by Winetree’s Miyako Akiyama and included sommeliers Mr Kenichi Tsuji of Kanazawa’s famous wine bar “Chateau Chinnon,” Mr Tsuyoshi Hanashima of Ishikawa Prefecture’s luxury Kagaya ryokan hotel and Mr Tetsuya Ebisawa of Tokyo restaurant “Manuel”. They were joined by leading wine writer Ms Rika Ogura and Mr Minoru Numata, an adviser to the Japan Sommelier Association and an “A+ Specialist Educator” for Wine Australia. Global Sky Managing Director, Ko Nagata said the visit was an
Winetree’s efforts to promote Australian wines have been further boosted by the opening of two Australia-themed restaurants and bars in Tokyo, “Terra Australis” and “Terra Azabu-juban” earlier this year. They are located in the Japanese capital’s upmarket districts of Sendagaya and Azabu-juban respectively. The Winetree group also supported various promotions in Japan by Austrade, Tourism Australia, Trade and Investment Queensland and Wine Australia, helped by Japanese celebrities including the legendary ‘Iron Chef French’ Hiroyuki Sakai. Australia’s wine exports to Japan have shown significant growth since last year’s introduction of JAEPA, which eliminated Japan’s previous tariff on Australian bulk wine shipments and is phasing out tariffs on bottled and sparkling wine. Australia’s wine exports to Japan increased by four per cent to total $45 million in the year to June 2016, with a 24 per cent rise in premium wine sales to Australia’s ninth-largest wine market by volume, according to Wine Australia. “Sirromet’s focus is on developing premium wines and we are continuously looking for ways to push the boundaries and remain industry leaders,” Sirromet’s sales and marketing director Rod Hill said. “We are proud to be part of the growth of the Granite Belt, and by inviting international visitors to our region we are helping the world wake up to the quality of Queensland wine.”

Have your say on waste recycling
Casey’s tips
A REVISED Waste Reduction and Recycling Plan for the Southern Downs region is currently open for public comment with Southern Downs Regional Council set to hold three community information sessions to explain the changes. Southern Downs Regional Council received the draft Waste Reduction and Recycling Plan 2016-2026 at its General Meeting last week and agreed to seek submissions and feedback through a 28-day community consultation process. As part of the consultation process, community information sessions will be held from 5.30pm at the following locations: Warwick Town Hall, Tuesday, 6 September 2016; Stanthorpe CWA Rooms, Wednesday, 7 September 2016; and Ballandean Hall, 8 September 2016. Southern Downs Mayor Tracy Dobie said the draft Waste Reduction and Recycling Plan 20162026 is a revision of the existing 2014-2024 Plan, which was needed following changes to the State Government’s Queensland Waste Avoidance and Productivity Strategy and changes to Council’s goals within the plan. “The revised plan provides the information for Council and the community to navigate a pathway to efficient and effective waste management that minimises environmental, economic and social impacts. “One of the major vehicles for achieving these goals is through upgrading and rationalisation of the existing waste transfer infrastructure and much of the plan is geared towards this option. “I’d encourage the community to come along to one of the sessions to hear about the changes and to consider making a submission,” she said. The draft Waste Reduction and Recycling Plan 2016-2026, along with details about how submissions can be made to Council, is available on Council’s website at http://www.sdrc.qld.gov. au/livinghere/waste---recycling/waste-reductionand-recycling-plan-2016-2026 . Submissions must be received by Council by 5pm, Friday 23 September. For further information please contact Council’s Environmental Services team on 1300 MY SDRC (1300 697 372).

What should the new Sandy Creek bridge be called? Council is looking for suggestions.
Bridges need names WHAT’S in a name? The Southern Downs Regional Council thinks there’s quite a lot actually and is calling on the community to suggest names for four new bridges recently constructed and opened in the region. The four new bridges are located at: Mullins Road, Warwick; Bellinghams Road, Elbow Valley; Sandy Creek Road, Leslie and Lyndhurst Lane, Warwick. Southern Downs Mayor Tracy Dobie said Council was keen to seek the community’s input to determine names for the new bridges.
“Last year Council named the new Berat-Forest Springs Road Bridge after the late Maureen Shearing, as a result of community suggestions because of Maureen’s connection to the area,” she said. “Maureen was a keen advocate for the bridge to be replaced as well as for the replacement of the nearby Kital Road Bridge. “Naming these new bridges is a visible way of recognising and commemorating those individuals who have contributed to the local area or the broader region.” If you wish to submit a name
suggestion for one of the bridges, please provide the following: Your name and contact details; The bridge location (e.g. Mullins Road, Warwick); Suggested name for the bridge; and A brief statement to support your suggestion outlining why the individual should be commemorated. Written suggestions with the above details can be submitted online at Council’s ‘Have Your Say’ page; via email to mail@sdrc.qld. gov.au; posted to The Chief Ex-

ecutive Officer, Southern Downs Regional Council, PO Box 26, Warwick Qld 4370; or delivered to Council’s Community Contact Centres in Warwick and Stanthorpe, and must be received by Council by 5pm, Friday 30 September 2016. Council will consider the community’s suggestions at its General Meeting on Wednesday, 26 October 2016. Trek on gorge track THE annual Waddle and Saddle was held in Killarney’s Cambanoora Gorge at the weekend. The mixed event for horse riders, cyclists and walkers along the historic Condamine River Road attracted a good field of participants who travelled through the beautiful Condamine Gorge near Killarney. The road was closed to traffic on Sunday with participant following in the tracks of the bullock teams and pioneers through the soaring cliffs and 14 river crossings of the gorge, enjoying a billy tea and damper along the way before returning home to a barbecue lunch. The 22km event is a fundraiser for the Killarney Show and Rodeo Society and is run with the support of the Killarney Lions Club and the Cambanoora Gorge Management Group. Cash flows for drought relief from RACQ SOUTHERN Downs community organisations affected by drought have been encouraged to apply for funding from the RACQ Foundation to help them get back on their feet. RACQ Foundation spokeswoman Renee Smith said weather across Queensland was varied but often left disaster in its wake. “We have cyclones and heavy
storms but, on the flip side, more than 80 per cent of our state is suffering through drought,” Ms Smith said. “We want to make sure community organisations know they can apply for funding. They’re often the heart and soul of local areas and can really help to boost morale.” Ms Smith said the funding could
go a long way. “Organisations can apply for funding of up to $50,000 and up to $200,000 in exceptional circumstances,” she said. “This can be enough to provide drought relief by helping a club or organisation deliver critical services to the community.” More than 160 community

Prove me wrong
Clear cut limits By Tania Phillips
“Now, the council has a guideline that clearly defines the areas that will be mowed, based on four zonings in the Southern Downs Planning Scheme, and sets out the extent of the mowing that will be done. “The new criteria establishes fair and equitable, value for money open space service levels that are consistent for communities across the Southern Downs.” Towns and villages portfolio councillor Sheryl Windle welcomed the changes, which she said created a more level playing field for communities in the region. “The council acknowledges that the approach to mowing of footpath areas hasn’t always been the same in all loca-
COMMUNITIES across the Southern Downs region will now have more clarity about the levels of service that Southern Downs Regional Council will provide for the mowing of open spaces, with criteria approved at the council's recent general meeting. Southern Downs mayor Tracy Dobie said that over the past six months the council had completed a review of the open space areas that it maintained. “The review highlighted that over the years there has been a gradual creep in the mowing that is done along footpaths and in parks right around the region, over and above what the generally agreed locations and levels were,” she said.
tions and in all communities,” she said. “The changes mean that there is no longer uncertainty about which footpaths get mowed, and why some don’t. “It has generally been accepted that in residential areas, property owners maintain their own frontage and footpaths, and do so to a very high standard. “The guidelines re-affirm this by focussing on areas outside of those zoned residential. “And most importantly, it creates a consistent approach that can be applied across the board, in a way that provides transparency, with the guidelines available for public scrutiny, and offers criteria that the levels of service can be measured against.”
THIS letter is written in the public interest, and issues a challenge to the Southern Downs Regional Council to prove it's wrong! Back in 2011 when last a chicken hatchery was planned to be built in Allora town, my research revealed what I now call upon council to disprove. In part of my submission I quoted the following against the hatchery up to the back fences of residents with poultry runs. Now that this new planning has expanded massively to 800,000 chickens to be hatched weekly, I quote what I seek the SDRC to vigorously deny. The study was called “Beaming with health - chickens, hormones, and an end to an urban myth”. Growth promoting antibiotics including virginiamycin, zinc, bacitracin and avolamycin are used to speed growth. The residue of the above lives on in the egg, and hatcheries then dispose of the noxious waste onsite. However investigations on 19 August 2016 informed me that the
noxious waste is removed from the site. When I asked to where, I was told it was none of my business. Back to the reasons for the antibiotics to laying hens is because it changes the bacterial milieu in the fowl intestine in some unknown way which increases the weight of the bird, making big business successful. This I believe is an industry that is totally unsuitable to be located in the town area of Allora and must be moved to a rural area where possible pollution can be tracked and monitored. The question is, will Allora town become the new Oakey? Who cares if the questionable decisions of councils go unanswered! What’s this tale doing the rounds about councillors wishing to form a women’s group! Women in the town of Allora already are a group wishing council women had a clue about what they have done to totally devalue our town, and our health futures! Melba Morris, Allora.

Kids are characters Australians like the Irwins and the Wiggles, along with cricketing superstar turned author David Warner, enthral a large audience. Books like Koala Lou, Wombat Stew, Rainbow Serpent, Mr Fly Guy, Piranhas don’t eat Bananas, I’m a Dirty Dinosaur, Lola the Lollipop Fairy and The Kaboom Kid were glimpsed in the parade, with children going all out to be their literary heroes. Between children creating their favourite literary characters and talented West School librarians creating a wonderful display, the school was abuzz with excitement
for the annual event. West School parent Tanya Strom, witnessed the parade and was full of praise for staff members, who shone in their efforts to celebrate Book Week. “The parade was fantastic! It’s clear to see that all staff at the school are so enthusiastic and passionate about what they do and the children are so very fortunate to have such wonderful, positive people educating them.” “Seeing a hall full of happy and excited children this morning made me one very happy and proud Warwick West parent,” she said.

Young are driven to road safety solution YOUNG lives are being lost on Southern Downs and Australian roads as under-prepared young drivers take to the roads according to founder, instructor and director of Total Driver Gene Corbett. Mr Corbett, a former professional driving instructor for BMW, Lexus, Ford, Holden and Mercedes Benz, believes too much emphasis is placed on passing the driving test and not enough on learning to drive. “And that’s what it’s all about, saving young lives, isn’t it?” he said. Mr Corbett’s Total Driver program is about to launch on the Southern Downs in the next few weeks. He said the company was currently training driving instructors in Warwick - the first area outside of Brisbane and the Gold Coast to get the program.
Total Driver managing director Gene Corbett, Linley Doepel, Pratten, Greg Dennison, Pratten, Shane Stidolph, Warwick instructor, Total Driver and Karl Stidolph, Warwick, talk about the new program launching soon on the Southern Downs. He said his driving instructors were first taught to drive again and then to instruct and then instructed while they taught - far more training

than the industry standard of four days and “learning on the job”. A passionate and committed advocate for more effective and ef-
ficient driver training programs, Mr Corbett said he drew on years of his knowledge and experience to try and provide better training. As a result, in 2004 Total Driver (Australia) was formed. He said the current structured Total Driver Program was developed over a period of 10 years in order to find the right mix of competency and behavioural change needed to create a safer, more responsible driver. “To support that process with cultural change and integrate the community to share the passion for safer drivers, safer roads and safer communities,” he said. “Driving is the highest risk activity that any person undertakes. It is the highest risk activity and leading cause of fatalities for the 15 - 25 age groups.

ALLORA Landcare Group (ALG) will team up with well-known ecologist Greg Ford to host a wildlife-themed morning at the picturesque Allora Mountain in September. The event on Sunday 18 September at 7am will encourage locals to find, identify and learn more about native birds of the area. The area is home to a diverse range of native wildlife, including a number of endangered and vulnerable bird species like the red goshawk (Erythrotriorchis radiates) and swift parrot (Lathamus discolour), and the event will showcase the local community’s largest natural, wildlife habitat, the Allora Mountain Flora and Fauna Reserve. ALG co-ordinator Adele Thomas said that the Allora Mountain is an area of high ecological value and this event will support the conservation of the significant, local asset which is home to 27 listed threatened species, eight of which are birds. “We invite the community to come along to increase their knowledge about our feathered friends and to find out how they can improve habitat in their backyards and properties,” Ms Thomas said. Greg Ford, ecologist and co-author of the authoritative book Birds of the Darling Downs, will join the event to share his expertise and inspire others to become caretakers of their community’s natural resources. Through the bird watching event, participants will learn to identify local, native birds and improve the management of habitat. “Following the bird watching component of the event, we invite group members to bring a picnic and share in tea, coffee and damper,” said Ms Thomas. The event will be held at 7am on Sunday 18 September. Visitors are asked to meet promptly at the reservoir picnic area which is accessible via Burgess Road. For more information contact Adele Thomas on 0412 007 393. The project is supported by the Condamine Alliance through funding from the Australian Government’s National Landcare Programme.

Rains cause minor flooding HEAVY rains across the Southern Downs in the last week have filled creeks to overflowing and caused minor flooding in several areas. The Bureau of Meteorology recorded that areas around Warwick copped the heaviest rains in the state in the three days to 25 August, with two to three inches falling in most areas, while some recorded four inches and more. Good falls were also recorded in the Granite Belt. Weather stations at Warwick and Scots College recorded close to three inches over the three days, with two inches falling on Wednesday 24 August alone. Dalveen recorded the highest three-day total in the region, with close to 5.5 inches. Heavy falls of around three inches were also recorded at Yangan, Allora and Killarney. The Queen Mary Falls, near Killarney, was looking spectacular with flood waters cascading down the rockface.

Casey’s tips
Shannon Noll strikes a chord SHANNON Noll’s everyman appeal lies in his honesty as he strikes a chord with his legions of music fans, tapping into a pure emotion that’s both his own and instantly relatable. The Condobolin farm hand’s life changed forever when he became the first runner-up of the initial Australian Idol series in 2003. Since taking to the stage and commencing his successful recording career, Australia’s favourite son ‘Nollsie’ has gone on to receive acclaim with certified triple-platinum sales, number one hits, five top-10 albums, 17 platinum and three gold accreditations. He also boasts the reputation as being the only Australian male artist to have achieved 10 consecutive top-10 singles. Undeniably, Shannon Noll has captured the hearts and minds of music fans around Australia and overseas with his raw, gifted rock voice. He remains one of the most recognisable names and faces in the Australian music industry with only a few matching his success.

WITH the Australian Titles being held in Stanthorpe in a month’s time, orienteering makes a timely return to Warwick this weekend. Private grazing land adjacent to Sandy Creek, below Leslie Dam outside Warwick, will be the venue for the event organised by the local Bullecourt Boulder Bounders Club. Club publicity officer Liz Bourne said the area contained an interesting mixture of open paddocks with scattered areas of granite and was suited to beginners as well as experienced orienteers.
With the Australian Orienteering Championships coming up in Stanthorpe at the beginning of October, Ms Bourne said that numbers at Sunday’s event would be boosted by a group of juniors participating in a training weekend in the leadup to this major event. “Local people who would like to find out more about the sport of orienteering are most welcome to come along on Sunday and try it out,” she said. Ms Bourne said that as well as courses for more experienced orienteers, the event would also have a short, easy course suit-
THE problem is this: why would a marauding killer shark choose Blake Lively over the world’s supply of whale meat? And having made the decision that Blake is a tastier morsel - OK, hard to fault that logic - why would our chompy friend then pursue her in a truly psychopathic fashion? But those quibbles aside, The Shallows does have the potential to become something of a B Grade monster movie classic. Blake’s doing a little surfing at a remote Mexican beach when she blunders across the dead whale ... and along comes the chompster, who selects her surfboard as an entree. Cue hours spent on a rock, watching the rising tide and avoiding our very bitey 3.5-metre friend. Of course, many others are not so lucky so Blake spends a lot of time clinging to the rock like a limpet, with her dear friend Steven Seagull by her side. A lesser friend would have
A scene from The Shallows. wrung the bird’s neck and used it as a shark distraction but, to her credit, Blake sticks to her feathered friend like glue. And so the battle with the pea-brained and very grumpy Noah waxes and wanes, but it’s pretty entertaining stuff, and well-shot. It won’t trouble the Academy Awards much, but it’s about the best of the dross that’s floating around at the moment. Take a big bite - I dare you. - Jason Beck

Educational expansion is highlighted through the week. VIRGO—August 23-September 22 An unpleasant surprise may have a cheerful ending and an optimistic outlook is all important. Grand finals in all codes The
spin With Casey O’Connor email: wickets-stpe@bigpond.com
SPRING is here, and that means finals time in all football codes. Locally supporters have a full day of football (soccer to me) on Saturday in Stanthorpe where there is sure to be plenty of action. The Cowboys head to Toowoomba in the hope of securing their place in two grand finals and the BRL wrap up their season with grand final day in Inglewood on Sunday. The results of the NRL season are still to be decided, and fans will be drawn to their TV screens, phones and the like to keep up-to-date with all that action. In the AFL, the Swans have claimed the Minor Premiership, and in a break with tradition all clubs this weekend have a bye - the effects of which will be watched with plenty of interest. On the AFL front, the Lions and another coaching club legend have parted company after Justin Leppitch received his marching orders early this week - no surprise there really and the hunt and speculation now starts for his replacement. At a time when the NRL finds themselves almost devoid of Sydney clubs in GF contention, the AFL have GWS and Sydney in the mix. Looks like the AFL push in Sydney’s west is paying dividends for the AFL and must be a concern for the NRL. There are plenty of disenchanted League followers at the moment and it is time for the NRL to sit back and take some notice or pay the price. It is however a busy and exciting time for players and supporters in all codes. On the local scene, good luck to all those involved in grand finals this weekend. In Country towns, sport is often the glue that binds a community together, and I am sure we will see that in spades this weekend.
- Casey PLENTY STILL TO BE DECIDED AFTER 25 rounds of NRL, the composition of the final eight is still undecided and the Minor Premiership will be decided on Super Saturday when the Melbourne Storm and Cronulla Sharks do battle at AAMI Park. It has certainly been a season of twists and turns, and no doubt there will be some more curved balls coming the way of supporters and tipsters this weekend. Last weekend, many tipsters were blindsided by some upsets. This one included. The good news for Queensland rugby league sides is the performance of the Broncos and Cowboys, and while the Titans may have to claw their way into the top eight the hard way, they are still there within a fighting chance. On Thursday night, the final round of the season opens with a danger game for the Broncos against a resurgent Roosters. The Broncos upset competition leaders Melbourne and issued a warning to those sitting above them on the ladder that they are peaking at just the right time. The Roosters looked to have the measure of the Sharks early their clash and will give Brisbane a tough run for their money. Brisbane looked like they were already in finals mode and at Suncorp will prove too good. The Doggies have dropped out of the top four like a stone down a well. Their Friday night opponents, the Rabbitohs, on the other hand, have burst back into form. There will need to be a major turn around here to see the Dogs win but they are the masters of finals football, so don’t be surprised. The Knights and Dragons are among the alsorans this season, but will be playing for pride on Saturday at Jubilee Oval. I would love to see the Knights finish their season with a win, but the odds are stacked against them here. One of the most important games of the season will be the Titans match against the premiers in Townsville on Saturday night. The Titans went within a whisker or a shaky field goal of securing their spot in the eight last
Peter Russell aims up in the Jungle Gong event. Look what you can do with that old bathtub – reinvented as a 2016 Billycart.
Billy Slater with his latest “kid”. weekend, and now have a mountain to climb to get there. Cowboy’s co-captain Matt Scott will not play but his replacement Scott Bolton will not let his side down. Many will be willing the Titans to a victory here, however I think we will see JT show the Hayne plane (which for me hardly got out of the hanger last weekend) how to really fly. Unfortunately, I think the Titans may have to rely on cards falling their way to make the eight. The biggest game of the round will decided the Minor Premiership and that plays out at AAMI Park on Saturday night. Melbourne were disappointing against the Broncos however it is unlikely we will see backto-back performances like that from a Bellamycoached and Smith-captained side. Gallen’s return to the Sharks certainly lifted them, but I doubt that will be enough to weather this Storm. Minor Premiership heading Melbourne’s way I think. The Tigers headed across the ditch and came from behind to sink the Warriors aspirations in 2016. They return to Leichardt Oval in a bid to force their way into the top eight at the 11th hour when they host the Raiders. The Raiders are at the top of their game at the moment and should be too strong here and do the Titans a favour. The Warriors host the Eels at Mt Smart Stadium to wrap up their season. After their round 25 loss, they will be looking to redeem themselves in front of their home crowd. Unfortunately, I think the Blue and Gold might once again send the message that they would have been a force in the finals if it were not for the actions of their back room boys over several. The Panthers and Sea Eagles wrap up round 26 at Pepper Stadium. I liked the way the Panthers went about their business last weekend, and think they will come away with a win here. Then again after last weekend’s results, I am about to consult the dog for second opinions. FAMILY AFFAIR THE 4BBB medley stableford mark the end of August on the Stanthorpe golfing calendar, and it became a family affair on Saturday when Ken Hinze teamed up with son, Geoff, from the Warwick Golf Club. After scoring 26 points on the front nine (the mainstay of their round) and a
21 points on the run home, the pair returned 47 points to take out the top prize. The dynamic duo certainly had a good round with just one hole returning only a single point. Ian Pickering and Len Leigh combined to take out the runner- up spot. Pickering played well and looked to be the major contributor as the pair returned to the clubhouse with a score of 45 points. Dylan Barraclough claimed both pin shots in the men’s competition. Geoff Hinze held the propin at 1/10, Ian Harvey at 5/14 and Fred Wharton at 9/18. The Ladies pin shot at 3/12 went to Dale Minchenton and Racheal Hendry had best approach at 17. In the run down, it was a ball each to scores of 41 points and better. It was great way to finish the month with the event sponsored by Howard and Sons. This Saturday, spring will be in the air and play will be for the September monthly medal and putting competition. The day will be sponsored by Gino’s Floor Coverings and a time sheet is on the board in the clubhouse. Tee off is from 11am, so get your name on the sheet which will also assist with catering arrangements. A reminder to players that the club Foursome Championships will be played in the near future and the Inglewood Open is fast approaching. A sheet has been left in the clubhouse- add your name if you intend playing so that numbers can be supplied to Inglewood. EXCITING GF’S TO CLOSE SEASON AFTER another outstanding season, it is Stanthorpe Football Association grand final time for the top two teams in each division. Five grand final matches will be played at the International club this Saturday. In a promoter's dream, the best two teams all year have rightfully won a spot in each grand final. In the final of the Men’s A Grade, Ballandean go into Saturday's game confident and short priced favourites against Stanthorpe United. Rovers have beaten the Redbacks on the four occasions the two teams have met this year. Several of United’s key players are battling injury concerns to make the team, and Ballandean will be very hard to beat. United’s strength is undoubtedly their experience in grand finals - prior to last year the club notched up eight grand finals on the trot. Experience only counts for so much, however, and Ballandean has a good run to Saturday’s GF. They enjoyed a week off while United struggled to put away an understrength Carlton Bear’s scoring three goals in the last 15 minutes to snatch a 3-1 and book a place in Saturday’s game. This is sure to be a thrilling game. Similarly in the Ladies competition, Ballandean Ladies will be odds on to win the ladies grand final. United their opponents on Saturday have not troubled Ballandean all year, and it is hard to see any change this week. Ballandean had a comfortable 3-0 win in the major two weeks ago. United won the right to play in the big one after a penalty shootout victory against Tenterfield after the teams were locked at 1-1. Sarah Day has had an outstanding season, and she is the key to Ballandean. If she plays well, Ballandean will be too strong. In the Senior Colts GF, two teams who have
had close games all year battle it out in the final game of the year. Inter won the major semi-final 1-0 - their first win over the premiers all year. The win will give the side confidence, and they go into the game knowing they can win. United must improve in a number of areas to challenge Inter. United were lacklustre against City in the preliminary, and were lucky to win a grand final spot with a late goal. This will be another close game. Stanthorpe City have won every junior colts game they have played this year and it should be no different on Saturday. United have shown marked improvement over recent weeks, City are very strong across the park, but if United are to cause an upset, they must test City’s defence. Ballandean Fillies have finished the season strongly and will be keen to win the grand final after their unlucky defeat last year. Ballandean play a tough but well-controlled brand of football. Their opponents on Saturday, Inter Club will push them all the way and make Ballandean work hard. Defence once again will be the key to this result as both teams can score plenty of goals It will be an action-packed day at Inter Club, with the first game kicking off at 9.30am. The grand final program is: 9.30am - Fillies - Inter v Ballandean 11am - Junior Colts - United v City ** 12.30pm - Junior Presentations 1pm - Senior Colts - United v Inter 2.45pm - Ladies - United v Ballandean 4.20pm - Men's - United v Ballandean ** 6.30pm - Senior Presentations BANGING GREAT WEEKEND THE SSAC (Inglewood Branch) Inc. held their monthly pistol competition last weekend with a variety of Action Pistol matches and scenarios held over the two days. There were three scenarios in Saturday’s competition. In the first round, Tom Donald made light work of the Zombie attack, defeating Wal Shepherd and Peter Russell. Donald looked equally at home in the Combo Gong and Paper scenario when he defeated Ray Dudgeon. The placegetters from the first round Peter Russell and Wal Shepherd finished in third spot. Donald then went on to make it a clean sweep for the day when he out-scored Stephanie and Ray Dudgeon in the Jungle Run. Sunday’s competition began as a repeat of Saturday when Donald took out the first event the Jungle Run. In the minor placings were Michael Dudgeon and Ray Dudgeon. Tom Donald’s run-winning run came to an end in the Zombie attack scenario on Sunday with Ray Dudgeon finally claiming a win. In second spot was Michael Dudgeon, and Wal Shepherd once again figured in the minor placings. Peter Jones took out the final event on Sunday when he defeated Ray Dudgeon and Monika White in the Combo Gongs and Paper scenario to wrap up a fine weekend of competition. Members of the Inglewood Branch will be watching the weather closely as they prepare to host the Queensland State Lever Action Championships on Saturday and Sunday. The current forecast shows a possibility of light showers, hopefully they will not interrupt the Championships. Visitors are very welcome to come and watch AAA grade shooters compete over the weekend. Local Sport BEST OF CONDITIONS IN a week where weather disrupted the Mallet fixtures, the gateball players got the better of the conditions. On Court One, Pat Schnoor, Val Fancourt and Grace Howard played the red balls against the white team of Bill Golding, Les Williams and John Draper. The Red Team was successful in both games, winning 12- 9 and 14 - 9. Both Val Fancourt and Pat Schnoor played well in these games. Meanwhile, on Court 2, the red team players were Andrea Denkewitz, Heather Widderick, Carol Verwey and Joy Newman. Their opponents were Margaret Dickenson, Effey Russell and Jenny Tunbridge playing white balls. In game one, the Red team scored a narrow 11-10 win, however the tables were turned in the second game when the White team ran away with a solid 17-12 victory. There were some excellent shots from Heather Widderick and good shots coming from both Heather and Jenny Tunbridge in this game. Following the break, the teams were redrawn and on Court One Andrea Denkewitz, John Draper and Grace Howard played the red balls against the white team of Margaret Dickenson, Jenny Tunbridge and Les Williams. The White team had a convincing 14 - 9 win in the first game. In game two, a countback was necessary to find a winner with the game finishing with both teams tied on eight points. The White team got the nod after the countback. On court one, Red team players Joy Newman, Val Shepherd and Carol Verney went head to head with Pat Schnoor, Bill Golding and Effey Russell. Each team recorded a win. The Red team won the opening game 10-9 before the White team hit back in game two to claim a 15-10 win. In Saturday afternoon games, there were six players in action. Andrea Denkewitz, Pat Schnoor and Margaret Dickenson drew the White balls while Bill Golding, Val Fancourt and Les Williams drew the Red balls. Game one resulted in a 13-9 win to Team Red. Game two was a closer affair with Team White securing a 13-12 win. In the final game of the afternoon, the Red Team hit back to outscore White 16-7. For the remainder of the week, the only action on the green was from the ducks who enjoyed the downpours. SMALL GROUP - GREAT ROUND IT WAS an unusually small field on Sunday at Sporters, but still an entertaining group who enjoyed a great round. Winner of the round was Dick Hilton. Runner-up was Phil Zikan. Run-downs went to Brendon Barker (who also had the Best Gross) and Jim Mitchell. The pin shot on the 12th went to Mark Lynam and the 17th to No Won Kim while Ian Anderson took the Pro Pin. Sneaking off with a meat tray each were Ray Thorn and Mark Lynam. Tee off this Sunday is at the regular time of 8am am-8.30am. Why not celebrate the start of spring and join the Sporters for a hit - visitors are always welcome.
Tenterfield girls aiming for three in a row on Sunday. WET AND SOGGY AT ‘GARRA CONDITIONS on the Wallangarra golf course were very wet and soggy on Saturday following the heavy rain early in the week, but it did not deter players in the single stableford competition. Peter Williams showed a liking for the conditions and came out on top after a countback ahead of A. Thompson. The only two pin seekers for the day were A. Thompson who grabbed a pin shot on the ninth and J. Purcell claimed an approach on the 14th. The birdies nest also went off with K. Williams snaring feathers on the 16th. Players are looking forward to a massive weekend of golf. On Saturday the entre is the monthly medal and putting competition sponsored by the Wallangarra railway station. Sunday is main course - the two ball ambrose sponsored by Golf World Toowoomba. Cost is $25 per person with lunch included. Tee off is between 9.30am -10am. Congratulations to Kev Williams who snared a hole in one on the par three ninth during the week. Pity it wasn’t during a competition - members might still be celebrating Kev. BILLY CART BASH IS BACK PREPARATIONS are well underway for the 2016 Ballandean Billy Cart Bash. After the success of the inaugural event, organisers are expecting an even bigger crowd at the Jacobsen Road site in the shadows of the Ballandean Pyramid on 11 September. There has been plenty of feverish work on carts in sheds and backyards around the district. An information and sign-on evening was held at the Ballandean Hall recently and there was plenty of interest in the carts on display and videos of last year’s events. Entries this year are limited and organisers say they are coming in thick and fast, so to avoid disappointment get your nomination in now. Entry forms can be obtained on line at www.ballandeanbash.com.au. You can pay your race fees at Ballandean School ($15 -correct $$ please) or at High Street Motor Inn. Once again, there will be plenty for the little kids (from five years) and those who among us who are still kids at heart. Sirromet Wines and the Holden Performance Driving centre have once again come on board and are providing the main prize of V8 Supercar Hot laps for the overall winner. There will also be cash prizes for winners.
Minor premiers Tenterfield Tigers will be looking to turn around recent losses to the Roosters when they meet on Sunday to decide the 2016 BRL grandfinal.
NEW ADDITION FOR SLATER THE road to champion footballer for the kid who grew up in Innisfail and dreamed of being a jockey has not been a conventional one. Billy Slater’s early ambitions in the racing industry are well documented and recently he returned to his roots in NQ as a popular Racing Ambassador for the Townsville and Cairns Cup meetings. While many predict Billy the Kid has a career in rugby league coaching or broadcast when eventually he hangs up the footy boots, the league superstar might have given us a peek into the direction his future might take with a recent announcement. Slater proudly announced the arrival of a new edition to the family. A colt (named TJ) out of Slater Thoroughbreds first broodmare Haman. The colt is sire by the exciting sire and aptly named Shooting to Win. Racing is still well and truly in Salter’s blood. You can take the boy out of racing apparently, but not racing out of the boy. BRL GRANDFINAL WEEK THE Tenterfield Tigers and Inglewood Roosters have been far and away the best sides in the BRL in season 2016 and this weekend they face off in the grand final at McIntyre Oval in Inglewood with the game to be played on Sunday. If history is anything to go by, the Roosters will be tough to toss on their home patch. I doubt that I have ever seen such enthusiasm for a football side as there is in Inglewood when their team makes a home grand final. This year will be no exception after the club spent a couple of years in the wilderness due to lack of player numbers. With several players returning to the Roosters this year from the Millmerran side that took all before them in the TRL C grade comp last year, they have been a strong side since the season opener. Tenterfield led the competition for much of the year and claimed the Minor Premiership on a better for and against record. There has been little between the sides all season, at their last two outings it has been the Roosters crowing. Tenterfield have made their way to the grand final the hard way after a narrow loss to the Roosters in the major semi final. Last weekend in Tenterfield, they outclassed the Stanthorpe Texas side but will need to be on their A game this weekend if they are to claim the premiership. Both sides play solid attacking football. The Tigers have players in their ranks capable of breaking the game wide open, but they will have
to overcome the spirited defence that has been a highlight of the Roosters season. Before the main game kicks off at 2pm, the Tigerettes will be shooting for their third consecutive premiership when they take on the Wallangarra Ramettes. There is sure to be plenty of Wallangarra support for the Ramettes following the collapse of the men’s side earlier this season. On paper, the Tigerettes look the winners and will be aiming to go through their third season undefeated. The Tigers have a supporters' bus leaving the Telegraph Hotel at 9.45am on Sunday morning. Bookings can be made at the Telegraph Hotel. Sunday is sure to be a great finale to the season. I think the Tigerettes will continue their winning run, but can’t decide between the Tigers and Roosters in the main game. Much will depend on player fitness. Good luck to players from all teams. COWBOYS HUNTING FOR GRANDFINAL BERTHS THE Warwick Cowboys will be hunting for a spot in the 2016 TRL grand final when they play Pittsworth in the major semi-final on Sunday at Clive Berghoffer Oval. The Cowboys will be primed and ready for attack after their week off, courtesy of their Minor Premiership win. Pittsworth last weekend defeated the Hawks 32-22 in their semi-final match while Highfields ended south’s season with a 34-16 win in the elimination final. On paper, the Cowboys head into this match slight favourites but this is sure to be a tough match. A win for the Cowboys will send them straight to the grand final. The loser of this game has another chance to secure a grand final appearance. They will play the winner of the Gatton Highfields game in the Preliminary final. The Cowboys under-18 side also has the chance to book their place in the grand final this weekend after a come-from- behind win over South Burnett Blue last weekend. The under-18s will play Valleys in the majorsemi - the curtain raiser to the Warwick Pittsworth game. Following the Reserve Grade elimination final last weekend, the Cowboys bowed out of the 2016 competition after a 24-10 loss to Valleys. Despite the loss it has been a great season for the Reggies.
Many of the members were away on Sunday playing in District Pennants. Results ‘hot off the press’ were that two of our teams won everything before them. They were Phil Wagner, Greg Murphy, Max Holder, with Edwin Welsh Skip, and Trevor Wright, Brian Black, Jim Rickard and Peter Collis Skip, with each team winning all their games against
Goondiwindi, Tannymorel and Southern Cross. Congratulations. The last event for August - 31 Wednesday: As there is an extra Wednesday in the month Jackpot bowls will be played - with the Jackpot starting at $50. September - Tuesday 6: Open triples - play at noon. September - Wednesday 7: Social bowls.

Warwick East was not very successful, the winners being Tenterfield who won five of their six games. Congratulations Tenterfield! Congratulations are also due to member David Weir who won a gold medal in the pairs competition in the Australian disabled bowls competition. Further congratulations are due to club patroness Pat Cook who is celebrating her ninetieth birthday. There will be no social bowls on Saturday as Pat Cook is holding her ninetieth birthday celebration at the club on that day. On Saturday 10 September, the club will be hosting a charity function in aid of suicide prevention in the construction industry. The day will include barefoot bowls and the club would like as many of its members as possible to come along, join the visitors and help make the day a success. This event is open to all comers, so the club invites bowlers and non-bowlers alike to come along and participate. The next day, Sunday 11 September Vic and Venus will be holding a sponsored day. The format will be club-selected turn-around triples and there will be $150 up for grabs in prizes and $50 in raffles. The club hopes as many as possible members will come along and support Vic and Venus, as well as the club. The club also invites bowlers of other clubs to come and join us for a great afternoon of bowls.
SOUTHERN CROSS BOWLS Coming up this Saturday 3 September, the club will hold a special afternoon for the super veterans and also enjoy a Father’s Day bowls afternoon starting at 1.30pm. All are welcome to come along. Names in by 12.30pm please. There was no social bowls last weekend as the Men’s pennants were played on Sunday. Thanks to the boys for representing the club. Better luck next time! Thanks also to the ladies for the big job of catering. Congratulations to the Warwick club on their win. Results of Claire’s pairs from last Thursday- B. Heffernan, J. Johnson d D. Cross, B. Donovan 16-14; C. Weier, C. Hope d C. Wickham, C. Sawyer 23-11. Winners were Cita and Claire. The club hopes all its ladies will be back on deck this week after succumbing to the flu. Today, Thursday 1 September will be the ladies meeting at 10.30am, lunch will be provided, followed by bowls at 1pm. The club will play for the Canning brooch, however if one of the club members win, the brooch will go to the lady with the highest score. So come on fellas don’t be afraid to join us on the green. WARWICK BOWLS CLUB MEN’S SECTION: Last Saturday the final of Club Selected Triples was played. T. Seaniger, A. Naylor, M. O’Leary d D. Neal, D. McLennan, B. Black 21-20. This was a great final’s match with quite a few members coming along to watch and they certainly were not disappointed with the quality of the match. Over the last few ends, it was a real nail-biter. Then on the last end Brian’s team looked like the winner, but Mick came in with his last bowl and cut their score back which gave his team the win. Congratulations Tom, Alex and Mick on winning and to the runner-up Don, Dawn and Brian. There was also social bowls. T. Owens, J. Ruhle d T. Roberts, H. Gibson 25-9. B. Buckel, D. Warr d R. Smith, J. Rickard 19-11. Last Sunday Hynes News Agency sponsored the bowls afternoon, and their sponsorship is very much appreciated. Results: I. Fordyce, J. Ruhle d D. Neal, J. Cutmore 26-7. A. Naylor, D. McLennan, G. Rapp d B. Hansen, P. Hutchinson, C. Johnson 16-13. There were three draws for the prizes and the winners were Alex, Bing, and Peter.
