From our hearts By Jolene Ogle IN A show of true community support, locals are rallying around the Latimer family of Eumundi who lost their mother and wife, Suzi, in a horrific traffic crash last Wednesday 24 August. About 5.30pm on Wednesday a hatchback collided into the rear of Ms Latimer’s car as she was turning right into Don Napier Road off Eumundi- Noosa Road. The force pushed her car into the path of an on-coming 4WD and caused Ms Latimer to be flung from her vehicle. Police are still investigating the crash and while they could confirm the driver of the hatchback was a

22-year-old Doonan woman, they couldn’t confirm rumours the driver was texting at the time of the crash. Since the fatal accident, a Go Fund Me page has been launched to help support Ms Latimer’s family and at the time of going to press, over $7000 had been donated. The statement on the Go Fund Me page said Ms Latimer was on her way home to collect her family for a celebratory birthday dinner for her mother. “Suzi was in her car waiting to turn into the street where she’d lived for 14 years, when a car hit her from behind and pushed her into the path of an oncoming 4WD. Although wearing her seatbelt, the impact ejected Suzi from her car and

she was unable to be revived at the scene,” the page reads. “Suzi left our world at just 49 years young, and leaves behind a devastated family who are struggling to comprehend a life without her shining light in their lives. Suzi’s husband is at home and trying to focus on comforting and supporting their two beautiful young children through the unimaginable pain of losing their mother while also trying to grieve the loss of his best friend and longstanding partner.” Ms Latimer, who worked for an Indigenous community health organisation, is being remembered as someone who was always ready to offer what she could to help others, “with the ability to make the lost feel

found and give to those with little”. “Whatever she had, she would share with others and always made time for her family, friends and community. Suzi loved to laugh and be surrounded by her friends and family. Suzi was the personification of generosity,” the page reads. The Go Fund Me page has been set up to help offer Ms Latimer’s family the space to grieve. “The financial hardship on her grieving family is one thing we can help with. Ensuring they have their needs looked after means they can have the space to grieve. Any contribution would be so very much appreciated,” it said. School porn is back By Jolene Ogle A DISTURBING porn-sharing website exploiting local schoolgirls is back online after being shut down earlier this week. Young men had been using the website since December to “hunt” for nude photos of “nominated” girls from targeted schools throughout Australia. The website was shut down and the Australia Federal Police were investigating, but media reports this week said the website is back online with another 19 schools added to the already long list of schools being targeted, taking the total to more than 90 schools and over 2000 photos of schoolgirls. Website users request images of girls from particular schools and when a nude photo is found it’s considered a “win” and pic-

tures are swapped with other users. Hundreds of names have appeared on the “wanted” lists including students from Peregian Springs’ St Andrew’s Anglican College, but college principal Chris Ivey said he was not aware of any of their students’ images on the site. “Our biggest concern was if a student of ours was there,” he said. “As far as we know, there isn’t a St Andrew’s student on there.” Mr Ivey said he was saddened to learn of the site, but wasn’t surprised. “That’s the sickening part, that we always knew these things were possible,” he said. IT professionals from the school have investigated the site, and Mr Ivey said from their investigations it was apparent St Andrew’s had been mentioned once

in a conversation thread when a person asked for pictures of students from the school. Mr Ivey urged students to be vigilant about who they shared images with. In light of the exposure of the website, experts are warning the consumption of this type of pornography is most likely linked to violence against women and are calling for the early education of young people about respectful relationships. Yourtown/Kids Helpline CEO Tracy Adams said research had shown mainstream pornography had changed and now routinely shows aggression and disregards consent. “Objectification and violence are clearly both symptoms of a lack of respect of the personal rights of individuals to be safe

from harm,” she said. “If we are serious about doing something about behaviours that lead to exploitation and violence, the Australian community needs to work together to educate our children at an early age about what it means to respect each other. It is everyone’s responsibility to challenge the negative messages in sexualised media and the role it delegates for women.” Ms Adams said the Kids Helpline (KHL) often received contacts from children and young people who were concerned about peer relationships including coerced sexting and pornography. “Perhaps most worrying is that the average age of those contacting us was only 13 years, suggesting the objectification of girls and woman begins at a much earlier age than many imagined,” Ms Adams said.

Students safety YEAR 11 students throughout Noosa shire will benefit from more than $8.4 million in funding from the State Government to help improve road safety. Main Roads and Road Safety Minister Mark Bailey announced the latest round of the Community Road Safety Grants during Road Safety Week from 22-28 August. Accordingly, the Rotary Club of Noosa is set to receive $130,722 to fund their Rotary Youth Driver Awareness program (RYDA). “The Rotary Club of Noosa will use the funds to provide young driver road safety education to Year 11 students from 10 schools in the Noosa area for the next three years,” Mr Bailey said. Rotary Club of Noosa president Tess Alexandroff said the funding was great news for the RYDA propgram. “This grant will enable us to offer this program free of charge to the 10 secondary schools from Cooroy down to and including Coolum,” she said. The RYDA program focuses on Year 11 students to enable them to become aware of their rights and responsibilities and the consequences of bad decisions and poor behaviour on the roads. RYDA is a one-day, six-session program held at an out-of-school venue, chosen to highlight crucial road safety messages. The program has been successfully run by the Rotary clubs of Noosa, Noosa Heads, Cooroy and Daybreak clubs over the last seven years. “I urge the school principals to book early and make sure that all of your Year 11 students take full advantage of this very valuable program at no cost to the students,” Ms Alexandroff said. “If we can save just one life with this program, then it has all been worthwhile.” Other schools to benefit from the latest round of funding includes Noosaville State School that will also receive $2880 to provide cycle skills sessions and road safety education materials to their Year 4-5 students. Tewantin State School will receive $3000 to provide cycle skills sessions and road safety education materials to their Year 4-5 students and Noosa Shire Council will receive a total of $11,079 to deliver cycle skills training to disadvantaged students at Cooran, Federal, Cooroy, Pomona and Kin Kin State Schools as well as develop an education campaign for visitors and residents on how to safely use the many roundabouts in Noosa. Learning live THE Former Governor-General of Australia the Honourable Dame Quentin Bryce was among the special guests to officially open a new learning facility at St Andrew’s Anglican College. Up for big ideas By Jolene Ogle NOOSA Council may have rejected plans to fund CCIQ Noosa’s proposed 1000-seat convention centre, but council is being praised for its open-minded approach to big ideas from local groups. CCIQ Noosa presented Council with a pre-feasibility study into a proposed 1000-seat convention centre and 700-seat performing arts centre at The J, which Council then had assessed by the AEC Group. The AEC Group report back to Council found there would need to be a rate rise of between 6-10 per cent to fund the development, which Mayor Tony Wellington said lead to their decision not to fund the proposal. “Council decided not to risk ratepayer money on such a speculative business development, but the issue is by no means dead,” he said. Instead of shutting down CCIQ Noosa’s plans, Council has put the call out to the private sector to turn the convention centre bid into a “commercially-viable reality”. “It’s up to the private sector to determine whether there is an appetite for the development and Council will provide whatever assistance we can,” Mayor Wellington said. Cr Wellington said council won’t shy away from big picture ideas. “It is absolutely appropriate for CCIQ Noosa to bring their ideas to us for consideration,” he said. “I commend CCIQ Noosa for their efforts, particularly the time and passion their volunteers have expended on this concept.” And the praise was mutual with

Mr Chenoweth believes the potential impact of the proposed convention centre is a “literal game-changer” for

the region and urges the market and public to access the pre-feasibility study to find out more. “For the first time Noosa could attract the key mid-market 350-650 delegate meeting incentives conference exhibition (MICE) business tourism segment,” he said. “Research into such a shift indicates higher yield without higher volume, new business creation, new part-time and permanent jobs opportunities, a desired diversification of the dominant general tourism economy, and significant further brand enhancement for Noosa resulting in the attraction of leadership, creativity and thought-leadership centres.” CCIQ Noosa will now recall its working group this month to develop and plan the next stage of the project. Noosa's living treasure Emma Freeman has released a book about her memories of living in one of Australia's most iconic streets, Hastings Street.

Memoir by the book KNOWN as one of Noosa’s living treasures, Emma Freeman has been a local since she moved to Hastings Street in the 1950s. Emma quickly became active in her community and can add conservationist, artist, author and playwright, to her list of many accomplishments. Her book, 'Hastings Street Stories from Noosa’s Past', is part autobiographical and part historical but all entertaining and promises to have readers laughing out

loud about Noosa’s eccentrics, artists, poets and go-getters. Daughters Michelle and Elissa Freeman said readers would be amazed at their mum’s energy and dedication to her painting, sculpture, playwriting and the saving of Noosa’s trees. A GROUP of cancer survivors, or Thrivers as they like to be called, take to the water every Wednesday to paddle, connect and make new friends. The group is now into its second year, thanks to the support of local business owner Lachlan Stevens and his father Laurie, who were the driving force behind the inaugural Paddle in Pink event last year that saw Noosa Sound turn pink when over 180 paddlers took to the water to raise awareness and funds for cancer research. It’s an hour to spend with like-minded people who have become friends and to forget about

New participants are “welcomed with open arms” to the free event every Wednesday morning from 7.30am at Boardwalk Boats. Paddling equipment is supplied and instruction is provided by Lachlan. “We will look after you. We will encourage you. You will have fun,” Sharon said.

Shark dropped in By Hollie Harris LOCAL water sport enthusiast, Jonah Cooper, had a very big surprise jet skiing off Granite Bay last week when a large tiger shark surfaced in front of his jet skii. A small Australian fur seal resting in waters off Granite Bay first caught Mr Cooper’s interest when he then noticed a large shark coming closer into the area. “I spotted the seal first and was going to try and film it with my Go-Pro and then the shark came up,“ Mr Cooper said. “My jet ski is 3.5m, and so I would say the shark was at least 4.5m. “It was just amazing. What a magnificent animal to watch,“ he said. Within minutes of him filming, the shark had hooked itself on the nearby DPI Shark Control Programs drum line just next to Mr Cooper’s jet ski. He was able to capture incredible footage of the shark surfacing and thrashing in attempts to free itself from the drum line. “Growing up with the name Jonah and being a serious ocean lover, I came to peace early in life that I would be the first one eaten by something in the ocean, but after working for many years with sea mammals I am not worried about seeing these magnificent creatures out in the ocean. It’s their home and I respect that. “I was in awe at seeing the animal. After it became hooked on line it became very agitated, and so I moved away. It was heart breaking to see another big beautiful creature being taken out of its natural environment. It’s not the first large one I’ve seen out here and it is a real shame they end up

In the distance an Australian Fur Seal can be seen resting in Granite Bay. this way. “If the shark would’ve taken the seal, it would’ve been a part of nature. I do hope they were able to relocate it before it died,” Mr Cooper said. Jonah notified the DPI immediately in the hope that they could get out to release the shark into a new location.

“It’s always great to be out there, and these creatures really add to the experience of living in this beautiful place. I hope to continue to see them out there from the safety of my jet ski. It was out there for food. We are not in its food chain and it was very peaceful and beautiful to watch until it hooked itself. “It was particularly unusual for the fur seal to be in these waters and was quite a sight to see. The shark was a mix of amazement and sadness. It was quite a day,“ Mr Cooper said. The Shark Control Program (SCP) relies on nets or drum lines, or a combination of both, to minimise the threat of shark attack on humans in particular locations. A DPI spokesperson was contacted and said that the drum lines are checked every second day but was unable to comment as to whether the shark was attended to yesterday or not.

Fair deal for dads THE Father’s Day Plant Fair is back for another year this Sunday 4 September at the Noosa Botanic Gardens. The annual sale is always a great success and offers a wide range of plants and gardening-related items for sale. ANXIETY, panic disorders and performance anxiety are three issues Damian Murdoch and Rupert Godwin have identified with personally on their venture to start up the Rewriting Anxiety support group in Noosaville, which begins this month. The first meeting will be on 7 September with an aim to provide both support and the telling of their personal journeys, combined with practical education which they have found instrumental in overcoming their own challenges. Registered Nurse Rupert met disability care support worker Damian at the Noosa Toastmasters Group and formed the idea for a group based on their own struggles with panic disorder and anxiety.

“We have both been determined not to let these challenges limit developing our full potential,” Damian said. “Being bold and joining such a group is the most important part of starting the positive journey of managing anxiety effectively,” he said. Meetings will be held on the first and third Wednesday of every month from 7pm to 9pm. The maximum charge will be $10, which contributes to hiring the venue and this also includes supper and course materials. So much rubbish LAST Thursday morning council staff were out on the river collecting an enormous amount of rubbish from an abandoned (illegal) camping site on the popular little fishing island opposite Munna Point. This was in response to a number of complaints from frequent river users who alerted council to the situation. The volume of rubbish on the island was too heavy for a local to put in their boat and too heavy for NICA’s River Ranger volunteers who were asked to investigate, but we would still like to thank them for trying. In the end, we had to hire a pontoon boat. When we mentioned the purpose of our trip to O-boats they kindly waived the hire fee. When we were out on the island, a local hire business stopped to tell us about more abandoned goods (including a two-seater couch) from another illegal campsite near the Frying Pan on the Noosa North Shore. The support from the community to stop the river being trashed is absolutely awesome and we would like to thank all of those who helped on behalf of council. Wouldn’t it be great if the culprits themselves understood the impacts they had on the environment? I would like to take the opportunity to remind everyone that if they see any illegal dumping happening, either in the river or anywhere else in the shire, to contact council immediately. Call that evidence? THE only evidence that Steve Hall (11 and 18 August) presents is confirmation that he is indeed living in a parallel universe and spouts figures with no basis in fact. Global temperatures have plateaued for the last 20 years. They peaked in 1998 (El Nino), dropped off then peaked again in 2010 (El Nino), dropped off then peaked again in 2016 (El Nino) and are now dropping off sharply. In contrast the CO2 level has continued to rise. The point is that the rise in CO2 did not have a significant effect on global temperatures and

the effect of anthropogenic CO2 is almost immeasurable. It is only a problem in the minds of the climate model designers and anthropogenic global warming (AGW) alarmists. Increase in global temperature is not per se proof of AGW. In respect to the claim that it is “simply a matter of political will to make it possible to supply ALL our power from solar” - pigs might fly. Currently, solar power is around five times the cost of coal and only around 20 per cent efficient. There is no battery or storage device big enough to power our cities, industry etc. when the sun doesn’t shine. Wind power is even less efficient. So would all those AWG alarmists (including Ken Lynn, Letters, 11 August) stop playing the man instead of the ball and at least try to provide solid empirical evidence that the 20th Century rise in global temperature has anthropogenic origins (empirical - based on, concerned with or verifiable by observation or experience rather than theory or pure logic). I own and operate Pateman’s Seafood, which sells seafood through my licensed van to the general public. The majority of my sales are “fresh local wild caught mullet and prawns (when available) as well as mixed varieties to many locals and tourists who can’t and simply don’t want to go fishing. They simply want the opportunity to come to my van and buy their meal of lovely fresh local caught seafood. To use tourism as part of his argument is purely desperation as commercial fishing has existed here for over 100 years. May I further point out that Ms Lucy Stanton, the federal Labor candidate for our electorate of Wide Bay campaigned with TV segments and allegations of commercial netters using machineguns (Gympie Times) on Noosa North shore. Weird science I AM intrigued by my friend John Turner’s insistence (18 August) that “there is no law of physics called the greenhouse effect” and that therefore the effect is “fictitious”. A physical phenomenon does not need to be declared a law of physics to be real. Take any of the physical effects that impinge on our daily lives, for example the photoelectric effect, the explanation of which earned Einstein his Nobel Prize; the Doppler effect, used in speed cameras; the annoying red-eye effect that spoils our photos; the Bernoulli effect, which gives lift to aircraft wings; the Tyndall effect, which explains why eyes are blue. None of these effects is given the status of a “law of physics”. But each one is perfectly real and has real-world consequences. The fact that they are all explainable in terms of more fundamental physics does not make any of them fictitious. The greenhouse effect has been tried and tested for over 150 years. It’s real. It’s a result of basic physical processes and for that reason it won’t go away no matter how much we try to ignore it. Graham Coghill, Marcus Beach.

A simple fix IT'S good to see that the bus stop shelter outside Riverlands Retirement Village in Moorindil Street Tewantin has been recently refurbished rather than replaced with one of the new “award-winning" contraptions. I suspect that the existing shelter provides much more protection from the elements than the new shelters, which are open on all sides and the back except for a few timber slats on some of them. Hopefully any other similar shelters in the shire will be retained and refurbished rather than be replaced. David Heitmann, Tewantin.

Sickening stuff THANK heavens for Mae Elliott who wrote about that sickening letter from Mark Presling

about bats, and residents of Wallace Park buying “cheap” because of the bats. How wrong and twisted he is. I am sick and tired of those who live at Tinbeerwah, and Doonan and other non-bat places who have such forthright opinions and little or no sympathy for those who are suffering from four and a half years of endless bat invasions, with the council doing nothing about the problem, or the Ministers for the Environment and Local Government. The Mark Preslings of the world never speak about the 86-year-old woman who lives near Wallace Park who has to use a wheelie walker and is unable to clean up the filth from the bat pollution and who is still waiting for help from the council so that she can use her backyard, or the 68-year-old woman whose husband has had a massive stroke and has to go into care, but cannot because she has to sell the house to place him into care and cannot sell her house because of the bats dripping from the gutters. These are not the only stories of what Wallace Park residents have had to put up with, and people like Presling would not have a clue. Many residents after four and a half years are now suffering from breathing disorders and post-traumatic stress syndromes, having been kept awake night after night with the screeching and fighting of the bats. There are a number of residents who want to return Wallace Park back to a koala reserve, and the council has been advised as to how to do this, but no, they persist with their let’s do nothing attitude. Bats are not yet extinct, and seem from all appearances to do massive damage to trees in Wallace Park, and Pinaroo Park forests, while it is well-known that koalas do not do such damage and are almost extinct. Lesson in manners TWO science teachers are frequent letter writers locally. A common thread is their consistent abuse and denigration (ad hominen) of well-informed people with different opinions expressed in other letters.

The science teachers never provide any empirical data or evidence, only appeals to authority (argumentum ad verucundiam) and consensus (argumentum ad populum) both logical fallacies, not accepted by the scientific method. Carbon dioxide emissions, and the “settled science” of climate change are favourite topics in the teaching of propaganda as science these days - poisoning the minds of our children. Were children’s minds untainted by propaganda, they could become scientists able to follow the method and think for themselves. Here is a question for the science teachers. It uses analogy and abstraction but contains physics (radiation, heat transfer, thermodynamics) and chemistry (regarding carbon dioxide). What would happen if I, a man, were made of ice (below zero degrees C) - in effect an iceblock man - and I were to stand close to a pretty woman (whose normal body temperature is around 37 degrees C) for some time. Everyone, including young children from an early stage of intellectual development and percept experience, knows what will happen. Yet, the “Greenhouse Effect Theory” assumed by propagandists and many to be “settled science” means that the ice-block man standing next to the pretty woman for some time, maybe 100 years, will cause her to become catastrophically hot, maybe six degrees hotter. Not a golfer I WOULD say without having any fear of making a false statement that Mr John Lobb of Peregian Springs has never picked up a golf club and potted a hole in one, two, three, four or five and had the pleasure of schooner or two with his mates or neighbours at the 19th. If he has and I am wrong, I apologise, then surely we should be reading his outpouring of criticism over the way the dispute and doubt is progressing at Peregian Springs Golf Club, the loss of investments his neighbours and others have incurred because of mismanagement by some overseas company instead of ensuring Noosa residents be told they should be “disappointed" because Noosa aquatic centre, Noosa Leisure Centre and the “J“ are operating at a loss.

Mr Lobb, Noosa residents are not wet behind the ears and this shire has continued to progress with the current and previous councils irrespective of its outside critics. Just for once could you just write one good thing about Noosa? I guarantee for at least one night you will have no nightmares. Sleep tight, there is no bogey man running Noosa Council. E. Echo the anger THE anger expressed by Mayor Tony Wellington at the recent Land Court decision in Brisbane to allow developers to bypass council development policy in the name of cutting redtape should be echoed by all of us who share his concerns. If you want urgent action to repeal this draconian and pro-developer legislation introduced by the Newman Government, please join me in lobbying our current State member, Glenn Elmes, as well as the relevant Minister, Jackie Trad and the Premier, Annastacia Palaszczuk by phone, email and in writing. Hollow men THE Noosa Civic has been sitting there begging for development, now we are told by Cr Glasgow the new medical centre “could" have gone there but the timing was bad because the Noosa Council was back in court again with the QAC regarding development disagreements. The Noosa Council spends more time in court spending ratepayers’ money than developing the shire. The residents are left with the status quo of stagnation with the hollow words “iconic", “intrinsic", “biosphere", and “diversity" echoing from the Noosa Council chambers. School trials NAPLAN online

The German tradition of Oktoberfest is coming to Kin Kin on Saturday 24 September.

Oktoberfest to new level THE beer is fermenting and the steins are ready to go for the Kin Kin Oktoberfest that will take over the Kin Kin General Store on 24 September. Kin Kin locals Scott and Pete have been brewing beer for many years and when Scott bought the old Free Masons Lodge in Kin kin they had the idea of using the space to start brewing beer from grain. The pair founded the Brewmasons brew club and have been all-grain brewing

at the lodge for the past three years. Throughout the year, they teach enthusiasts how to brew and each year they hold a private Oktoberfest party but this year, after an overwhelming amount of public interest, they are taking their annual Oktoberfest to a new level, holding it at the Kin Kin General Store on Saturday 24 September from 2-10pm. The beer on show this year will be Scott and Pete’s own

version of a traditional Vienna lager made of a recipe from a retired Austrian Master Brewer and has been tweaked over the past two Oktoberfests. Entry to the Kin Kin Brew Masters Oktoberfest is $50 per person and includes food, first beer fill and live music. Tickets are limited and are available through thebeermasons@gmail.com or at the Kin Kin General Store. There will be no tickets available at the door on the night.

HIGH-TECH, high-fives are happening everywhere at Cooroy State School after the delivery of new Infinity laptops last week. Every student in 4WC received a laptop and they were put straight to work as the school is one of 10 in the region that has been selected to trial NAPLAN Online. As a NAPLAN Online trial school, Cooroy will be doing trials in the coming weeks and over the next two years until NAPLAN Online goes nationwide in 2019. The students took the time to thank their sponsor, the Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank that has supported the school’s robotics program for the past seven years. In 2014, the school introduced XO laptops in Prep, Year One and Year 2 classes, with all children having their own touch screen device. These XO devices are a great accompaniment to the robotics program through the scratch and turtle programs. The programs teach the students to start coding from an early age. The Infinity laptop is the next generation of the XO laptop, and with the issue of the laptops last week, another step was taken in the Cooroy State School STEM journey. Kirsty Walker is the teacher of 4WC and has been leading an XO Mechanic program

School principal Richard Barrie said the support of Bendigo Bank enabled the expansion of this program and would soon become invaluable for more students at Cooroy State School. “The Infinity laptop program is an ideal way to captivate young minds and stimulate their critical thinking. Students learn not only how to use technology, but also how to problem solve if necessary. The students from 4WC are so excited and we’re privileged

to be able to deliver the program right here in Cooroy. It’s a great initiative that sets us apart,” Mr Barrie said. On hand to help deliver the laptops to their new owners, Cooroy Community Branch manager Geoff Edwards said he continued to be impressed how the school acted strategically on behalf of its students. “Our branch just keeps growing with Cooroy State School and its great initiatives. We’ve been supporting the school for many years, and to have the opportunity to be here with the kids and see what this program means to them is fantastic,” Mr Edwards said. The value of completed work was up 2.2 per cent across the financial year. This was not helped by the fact that public sector spending was down 15 per cent for the 12 months. We expect a slight improvement in 2016/17 given there is limited funding in the state budget.”

Simply choose a space and add a comfortable, all-weather chair then add green touches such as a potted palm to create a tropical look or bring in wooden boxes and stack plants at different heights to add interest to the space.

The Pocket Guide for Tenants - Houses and Units (Form 17a) is a handy 12-page booklet that covers the basics of renting. It also points readers to more detailed tenancy information on the RTA website. Tenants in caravan parks have a fresh new booklet called Pocket Guide for Tenants Caravan Parks (Form 17b) to help guide them through tenancy matters.

The year 2015 marked the 40th year since Song And Danceman was a national hit and voted Song Of The Year, and his songs have earned him an honoured place in the history of Australian music.

Between 1972 and 1980, Mike released six albums of which two went gold and many of his songs were covered both here and overseas. He compered his own ABC TV series and toured extensively both in Australia and overseas. By the time he released his Heartland album in 1989, he had quit touring to pursue a successful career in advertising.

The release of his comeback album If Only For A Moment in 2011 saw him return to the road, playing concerts all over the country. His most recent album Dancing In The Rain featured the evocative track I Wonder Who You’re Waiting For. “I will continue for as long as I can still deliver. I love performing, always have, and the response from audiences around the country has been wonderful.

MANY remember the arrival of the American Airstream caravan on the roadside of Mary Street back in 2011 when the Bullitt Espresso Bar became the new morning stop off for many coffee lovers. Owners Michael and Sasha Baviello had the simple vision to create a business with exceptional service and to be hands-on owners who were there every day for their customers. “One Airstream, $500 and a risk equals Bullitt Espresso Bar,” Michael said. The unique silver caravan was becoming somewhat of an icon here in Noosaville and the genuine customer service was fast and old fashioned. The coffee was fantastic and the pull-in-pull-out feel of the Bullitt meant Michael and Sasha’s business really began to flourish. After four years, they outgrew

the caravan and it became time to create a new concept for Bullitt which still maintained that unique sense of style and the idea of using a shipping container came to life. Taking five months to build, the container used mostly recycled materials and plenty of blood, sweat and tears. “We have the scars to prove it!” Sasha said. So in 2015, the proud couple unveiled the new and improved Bullitt Espresso Bar complete with deer horns, a cameo from the Pulp Fiction boys and that same iconic style. Noosa’s only shipping container cafe has been accredited for exceptional customer service and is still owner operated every day, although the team has grown quite a bit. “We are still extremely excited and appreciative of all the positive feedback we continue to receive. “It’s our heart and soul and we think it shows,” Sasha said.

Distress test to check depression By Hollie Harris KEEPING your chin up or finding the right kind of help when going through a distressing time in life may be more important than we think. The Cancer Council has called for routine distress screening of cancer patients at point of diagnosis, following research findings that screening can prevent depression and improve quality of life. In one of the first large scale studies of its kind internationally, researchers used a â€˜distress thermometerâ€™ to assess the psychological and emotional state of Queensland men affected by prostate cancer. The thermometer is a cost-effective psychological test for measuring patientsâ€™ distress and determining whether a patient would benefit from referral to specialised supportive care services. Cancer Council Queensland CEO Professor Jeff Dunn AO said enhanced clinical care guidelines were needed to promote the physical and mental health of cancer patients. â€œA diagnosis of cancer can be a distressing life event for the patient, affecting emotions and behaviours as well as the patientâ€™s physical health,â€? Prof Dunn said. â€œPatient distress is a cause for serious concern and can lead to noncompliance with treatment, sub-optimal quality of life, co-morbidities, and poor prognosis. â€œWith at least one in three patients experiencing clinically significant psychological distress, itâ€™s critical that we address distress by

screening all cancer patients at point of diagnosis.â€? Foundation Professor of Allied Health Research at Griffith Universityâ€™s Menzies Health Institute and a lead author on the study, Professor Suzanne Chambers, said the thermometer was also effective in recognising distress many years after a cancer diagnosis. â€œThe distress thermometer is highly sensitive at detecting cancerrelated distress for up to three years after diagnosis,â€? Prof Chambers said. â€œThis study is the first in Queensland to show that using the distress thermometer with prostate cancer patients is particularly effective at detecting emotional and psychological distress so that patients can be referred to specialised support. â€œThis tool is a useful addition to help identify patients suffering from distress, and to refer those who need intervention beyond the standard support provided. â€œItâ€™s important that all cancer patients are referred to services that match their concerns and level of need - from telephone-based counselling to peer support, or further clinical help.â€? Around half of all men diagnosed with prostate cancer report chronic unmet supportive care needs related to their diagnosis, often linked to side-effects of treatment such as loss of libido. Cancer Council Queensland CEO Professor Jeff Dunn urged those affected to reach out for support.

Remaining calm during hard times is so important. Cancer Council introduces a new way to monitor our stress levels to avoid a downward spiral.

â€œRoutine screening for distress in cancer patients will lead to better, indepth psychological care delivered at the right time and in the right way,â€? Prof Dunn said. â€œOnce distress is identified, patients should be referred to Cancer Councilâ€™s 13 11 20 for information and specialised support.

â€œPatients and their loved ones can also get referrals to our Cancer Counselling Service from their doctor or via 13 11 20.â€? Around 4000 Queensland men are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year, and about 640 men die from the disease. Cancer Councilâ€™s 13 11 20 is a

THE weather has been beautiful these past few days, but as per usual I have succumbed to a bout of man flu that always seems to hit me when I leave the tropics for the vicious Noosa winter. Anyway, in the midst of the coughing and hacking (most unpleasant for all around me) I have been trying to get on with the workload while skipping marginal surf sessions in the hope that I can kick this sucker quick time. (On my last return a couple of months ago I was sidelined for three weeks, and I ain’t going there again.) So if this column feels a little scattered it is only because it is following the pattern of a clogged brain, and please save the smart remarks for when I’m feeling better. Meanwhile, as I remember it, the last time we spoke the Billabong Pro Tahiti had just begun with desperate flat days in sight. Well, as we all now know, it finally picked up enough to run and in fact finals day was pretty substantial Chopes, although definitely code green. In the normal course of events, you’d say what happened that day was a one-off, never to be repeated, freakish occurrence in surfing history. A 44-year-old man who hadn’t been in a final for three years beat a 23-year-old who is generally considered to be the best surfer in the world today. To add to the scenario, the older man had been the younger man’s mentor since his first forays into the forbidding waves of Pipeline. The older man was, of course, Kelly Slater, the younger John Florence. I watched the final stages of the Billabong Pro Tahiti that morning, and from the very beginning, I knew that Kelly was going to prevail. For starters, he knocked out Tahitian Bruno Santos in the quarters

with two perfect 10s, which is a good start to anyone’s day, but it was not that. I could see it in the champ’s body-English. When Kelly is on, he’s really on, and there are few people in any sport who could match that combination of instinct and determination. I know of what I speak because I’ve known Kelly for 20 years and almost a decade ago I tracked him around the world, bidding for his attention in a world full of distractions while we worked on a book. We taped sessions in Hawaii, Fiji, France, all over Australia and up and down the California coast. He provided access to dozens of high-flying friends, including Eddie Vedder and Pamela Anderson, who was utterly charming over a home-cooked breakfast at her Malibu home. But at times he was the most frustrating, infuriating working partner. I titled my introduction, “Waiting For Kelly”. When he read the manuscript Kelly said, “Wow, that’s giving it to me straight!” One of his closest friends later told me, “When Kelly keeps you waiting a long time, it’s not that he’s being rude to you, it’s just that he’s being super nice to the person before you.” The book, Kelly Slater: For The Love, was a success in most markets, and I think that together we succeeded in depicting a champion in the prime of life, a man of many talents and even more interests, a man who would have succeeded in whatever he decided to pursue. Kelly could be a flake at times, but the man I discovered underneath that was one I feel privileged to know, a man of ideas as well as action, a man of warmth as well as steely determination. One of my fondest memories of the long interview process is of a night at the Tantina de la Playa, in Bidart, France, a favourite restaurant of both of us. The Billabong Pro Mundaka had finished that afternoon, and after the long drive

back to France, Kelly was in a relaxed and expansive mood. Over several bottles of good red wine, we covered everything, from the existence and nature of God to an insider’s view (Kelly is of Syrian extraction) of the Palestine situation. Suddenly it was two in the morning and we had been the only customers for several hours. The waiters stood by discreetly, smiling when we looked at them. When I switched off the recorder and called it a night, Kelly signed memorabilia for the staff and then we had to sit back down and drink rounds of manzana with them before staggering into the morning. My most embarrassing memory is of a surf session at Cloudbreak in Fiji, when I showed my intent by paddling hard for a set wave. Slater and his pal Shane Dorian paddled aside and let me have it. I took the drop and turned hard before hearing a piercing whistle. The young free-surfing prodigy Clay Marzo had been lurking up the line and whistling at anyone who started to take off on him. I presumed he was somewhere in this pit behind me and turned the board harder to push through the lip and off the back. Slater and Dorian were shaking their heads and thumping their boards in frustration. “You just don’t frickin’ do that!” an exasperated Slater shouted at me. I looked up the reef and saw Clay Marzo, still sitting on his board. I learned later that a lot better surfers than me had been yelled at in the line-up by Kelly Slater, who is human after all. His rage, however, was momentary and the incident was never mentioned again. But it still haunts me. But it isn’t the staggering weight of his achievements that make me such a huge Kelly Slater fan. It is the fact that surfing is not the man. By being so much more than just a surfer, he has elevated our sport, our culture, more than anyone else since Duke Kahanamoku, and I have the deepest respect for him for that.

Cobia, pearlies and amberjack have also been on the menu. Micro jigs and soft plastics have been scoring some nice fish if you want to mix it up from the conventional baits. Sunshine Reef is best at night with good numbers of squire and snapper getting caught on wellpresented baits. Burley is key when chasing snapper and frozen burley logs positioned up current from your baits will greatly improve your

Up on the Ski Runs, the odd jewfish has been coming from the deeper holes, and large flathead up to 80cm have also been reported from the same area with soft plastics and live

On the beaches, anglers who have made the run up to the North Shore have been rewarded with some quality tailor, again the better fish seem to be coming at night. Jew are also starting to show up and we should see better fish as we move into the new moon.

WITH the offshore scene still a little on the blowy side, anglers tended to opt for the river with some great results, starting at the river mouth and Dog Beach. There have been plenty of quality bream being landed off the rocks at the river mouth and around at the Dog Beach. Most anglers using fresh strips of mullet, whole small Hardy Heads and live bloodworms. There have been a few quality flathead along Dog Beach - fuze soft plastics have been working a treat on the flaties. The odd mangrove Jack

has been caught on livies, strip baits and soft plastics. Expect to find tailor and trevally around the mouth harassing the bait schools as they move into the river. On the other side of the river, the Frying Pan has also seen good bream. This time of year you’ll often find some good tailor around the Frying Pan, medium size Strada poppers and walk the dog lures are a good option and provide plenty of entertainment as you see the fish crunch the lure. Grand Final, with time on in finals we ended up playing forty minutes of extra footy - so an extra half, which is massive, so we had Tuesday training off the track and we all sat down in the rooms and watched the game.

Lots of laughs and lots to improve on before the big game. Thursday training was of normal routine. All the boys were up and about for an early morning training session Saturday before heading down to watch

Preliminary Final, we knew we had their measure. By the last quarter we were up by ten goals and with continued manic pressure and quality skills we had played ourselves into the Aflq D2 Under 19’s Grand Final. The final score - Noosa Tigers 21.19.145 defeated Burleigh Bombers 6.6.42.

These little Fins can By Lucy Whitehill NOOSA JUNIOR DOLPHINS UNDER 6 THE Under 6 teams played the Swans and Lighthouse for the last games of the season. These boys have packed a punch playing two games a week for the entire season and not once breaking. What an effort! We saw some extreme footwork this week and a lot of speed from crowd favorites Jacob, Gus and Daniel, smashing through for awesome tries. Fantastic tackles from Sam, and killer dives from Kellen, these guys are unstoppable. All the boys have played an awesome season and it’s great to see them grow and respect each other as a team, can’t wait to see them grow up together. Three cheers for the Under 6s - Go Dolphins! UNDER 7 The Under 7 Noosa Fins defeated the Brothers 55-35 in what was a superb effort from everyone on the field. The first try was had by Lachie before anyone knew the game had even started and he kept the pace throughout with another four tries later in the game. Awesome runs continued throughout and the boys kept their shape well ensuring the opposition could only run from side to side as they struggled to get through the brick wall of Fins boys. It was a successful weekend on the field for the Noosa Dolphins last games of the season. the match went to Uli and Lachie. UNDER 8 The Under 8 Noosa Fins defeated the Maroochydore Swans 65-25 in what was a tough game. Noosa prevailed with a 65 to 25 win over the speedy Swans, which saw a huge game from Mr Crow who once again busted the myth that size counts. This little pocket rocket crushed Maroochydore attacks with gut-busting tackles and enormous clear outs while still finding the time to score a hat trick of great tries. The brutal tackling of Zahn demolished the pride of the opposition, creating space for Justin and Mackie to muscle their way forward. A helping hand from the Reds 'Big Will' was needed after a crunching head clash forced a reluctant Tom from the field. All

in all, one of the best games of the year and the boys can retire with pride. Players of the match went to Daniel and Mackie. UNDER 10 The Noosa Fins defeated the USC Barbarians 29-10. Captain Jacob finished off his first season with a great game and has continued to improve. The forwards did their job securing ball in attack that stopped USC with big tackles in defence, not allowing many metres for the Barbarians going forward. Big runs to Archie who powered over to score and Cody, Hunter and Jack who played courageously all day.

Noosa Gold into grand final play By Jules Rosenkranz NOOSA EAGLES SOCCER THE Noosa Eagles Soccer Club was represented only by the Under 11 team this week who put in an amazing effort in their preliminary final. Under 11 Noosa Gold had their preliminary finals on Saturday against Currimundi Vipers at Palmwoods. The weather was beautiful and sunny but most of all there was so much support from the players, families and friends of Noosa Gold. The game started out with both teams very determined to win, both knowing that there was a spot

in the grand final up for grabs. Noosa settled in and dominated the first half of play with some great team work resulting in Noosa leading 2-0 at the half time break. In the second half, Noosa continued to be in control of the game with another two goals being scored. Noosa ran away with the win 4-0. Goals were scored by Jarrah Kerrigan, Jude Youens, Hunter Baistow and Innocent Sibanda. Noosa Gold will play against Caloundra Green in the grand final on Saturday at Buderim. The club wishes all Under 11 legends the best of luck in their grand final this Saturday.

Our Golden Gloves sport By Ron Lane LAST week for four nights - Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday - 450 boxers gathered at the Acacia Ridge Tavern in Brisbane to contest the 252 fights that would lead to some being crowned with Australiaâ€™s highest boxing title - the National Golden Gloves. With all states well represented and teams from both New Zealand and New Caledonia competing, officials are rating these Golden Gloves as the best ever. Happy to say that our Noosa Shire was well represented with teams going from Noosa Box Office (NBO) boxing club Noosaville, and Impact Boxing Academy Cooroy. For NBO, Keana Welch had a great tournament. This young schoolgirl, boxing in two divisions, won the gold medal in both. Then to top it off, she received the trophy for best school girl boxer of the tournament. When we consider the overall results there can be no doubt that the Impact Boxing Academy Cooroy, under owner/ coach Mark Evans, is at present rated the most successful amateur boxing club in all of Australia.

The final bell was rung, results were tallied and the Academy finished with an outstanding nine Golden Glove champions (gold medals) and two silver medallists. Also two members of Impact, Luke Martin and Tyler Blizzard, won their challenge bouts. These major bouts were to finalise the naming of the Queensland team; a team which will travel to Ireland to take part in major invitation tournaments against the best in the land. Interesting to note that of the twelve chosen to represent our state, five are from the Impact club; Brock Shelly, Sam Cameron-Hands, Luke Martin, Tyler Blizzard and Taylah Robinson (female division). Another major success for Impact was when Ella Boot - a Golden Glove winner - was also named as the Female Youth Boxer of the tournament. With NBOâ€™s Keana Welch also winning the best schoolgirl award, it tells us that our girls are indeed in good hands. Well done to our local coaches Israel Kani of NBO and Mark Evans of Impact. Noosa youngsters win grand final in a tie-breaker NOOSA SOFTBALL SO where do we start? Itâ€™s been a big last six weeks as we now approach the Noosa Softball summer season, so maybe working back is best. Last weekend the Noosa Under 17s won the grand final at Caboolture in what can only be described as one of the best junior games Iâ€™ve witnessed. Down 7-3, the Noosa team

rallied and came away winners 11-8 in the tie-breaker after two and a half hours. Shinai pitched a great game and all the team batted well topped off with the home run from Riley, most of the boys then backed up in the menâ€™s team but alas we went down 5-4 in the last innings. Thanks goes out to Richard W, as

he coached these teams all year. Prior to this, we had masters where we had three teams and came away with two silver medals and a fourth place. Not bad for a bunch of old girls and guys. The highlight for Noosa Softball was Luke Thomas playing at the world junior championships for Australia in America, and as usual Luke

held his own in the tournament, while we also had players go to Blacktown to play in the friendship series for the Queensland and Australian teams all this and the season has not started. This Saturday sees sign-on at the ground from 9am to 2pm, where we will have a bit of a hit going on. This will be followed on Noosa Show weekend with the schoolboys state

titles being held at Noosa, so if you want to see what the sport is about, the best juniors in the state will be on show that weekend. Hopefully we will see you in the near future, come along and play as we have teams for age groups 4 years to seniors. - Richard Murrihy
