Thrilled to be here By Monique Kuzeff RED dirt, Hills hoists and good times are the three things that describe the style of western NSW raised and country music artist Fanny Lumsden and her band The Thrillseekers. They are thrilled to be performing at more than 14 town halls across regional Australia in the coming months. The 29-year-old Tallimba girl, who boarded at Scots School in Albury, will be travelling with her band from September to Riverina and north east towns including Savernake, Walla Walla, and Carabost to perform as part of her fifth annual Country Halls Tour. The Country Halls Tour began five years ago when Lumsden set out to raise funds for BlazeAid by holding shows in three small town halls in the Riverina. After receiving an enthusiastic response from the communities, the show took off and five years down the track she is now performing in town halls right across regional Australia annually. Some of the money raised will go back in to revitalising the “heart and soul” of the communities - the country town halls. “Town halls were once the heart and soul of the community and now we want to recreate that again through this tour,” Lumsden said. “We aim to make it really fun for everyone by providing a variety show rather than a sit down concert. “While every tour is great, this one is unique for us because it’s really community orientated and everyone is brought together through it. “There’s something really special and almost nostalgic about the shows. We cannot wait to get out there again.” Lumsden released her debut album Small Town Big Shot in September last year which came in at number six on the Country ARIA Chart with her single Soapbox reaching number one on the Country Music Channel for three weeks. From the beginning of the year she and the band have already travelled more than 25,000 kilometers performing her album at

gigs right across the country. She said her debut album was made possible through crowd funding and that while it was “difficult” to get it off the ground the support from her fans was “incredible”. “The debut album has gone really well, much better than we ever thought I would,” she said. “It’s been really exciting the reception we’ve got. We raised the money to record the album through my incredible fans who crowd funded us.” “My main inspiration was my family and growing up in rural Australia, the real people we met along the way and the travel.” Having grown up on her family farm in the small town of Tallimba in central west NSW, this musician knows all about the country life and when she sings it’s not only from the heart but from her experience as well. She spent six years living on the Border during her adolescence and said it was “so much fun” living on the Murray River. “I loved living in Albury ... we (peers) used to go swimming and jumping off the bridge, tyre floating and just hanging out pretty much all summer,” she said. “We spent lots of nights at the movies, followed by the Lounge and me having no idea what to do in Intencity.” Lumsden was always an avid songwriter and wrote many songs before her band got together. Coming from a musical family, she learned piano as a young girl and got involved in many choirs. “We always had music around the house and so I think it was natural that my cousin and I always played the guitars, sang and wrote songs. Lumsden said she particularly likes the personal connection that country songs make with an audience. “I love that it talks about real life and this is the way it appears to me. WODONGA man Cameron Kemshal-Bell, who went missing on Friday 13 August was discovered alive by a farmer on a property in Bonegilla. A Wodonga police spokesperson said the 31-year-old was found in the farmer's shed “dehydrated” and “disorientated” and had no recollection of the four days he was missing. He was emitted to hospital with non life-threatening injuries. The man had last been seen leaving his home on Lawrence Street, Wodonga, at midday on the Friday in a new white Holden Cruze, which was later found abandoned on Kerr Road, Thurgoona. Albury police were assisted by the canine unity, Victoria police officers airwing unit and New South Wales SES on Tuesday as they searched for the man. Wodonga police will continue to investigate.

A LAVINGTON man was killed in an industrial accident at S.J. and T.A. Structural in Kane Road at about 7.15am on Thursday 18 August. Victoria Police believe that the 33-year-old father was crushed between two steel staircases after he and a colleague were using a crane to stack steel. Wodonga SES and firefighters were also called to the scene, where the man was found dead underneath steel. WorkSafe will conduct an investigation into the incident and police will prepare a report for the coroner.

BETWEEN 2010 and 2012 the average number of suicide deaths per year in Australia was 2577, that’s almost 50 deaths a week or close to eight deaths each day. While life in a small rural town may seem idyllic, in reality there can be a lot more than what meets the eye and, just like the larger towns and cities, it too has issues lurking. The tight-knit village of Yackandandah has been impacted by a number of suicides within the community and felt it was an issue worth discussing. As a part of a series of six forums being held in Yackandandah throughout the year, a Suicide Forum will be held at the Public Hall on Thursday 25 August for anyone interested to come along and listen in. The forum will be the third of the series that are made possible through funding from Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal. These forums - which have already included talks on domestic violence and drugs and ice - focus on prominent issues that regional and rural areas across Australia currently face. Other forums to follow will include topics around end-of-life issues, internet addiction, and positive mental health. Yackandandah Community Centre manager Ali Pockley said the forums aimed to get the local community together to talk about the broad range of issues affecting them. “You have to raise these issues even though they are thorny ones because some people are isolated here,” Ms Pockley said. “It’s very easy to sweep these is-

Treasure ‘find’ on garage trail By Monique Kuzeff OVER the last 12 months Wodonga Council has seen the three-bin system work to reduce waste to landfill by 43 per cent, and now it’s calling for residents to get on board the annual Garage Sale Trail. Residents are urged to turn their trash in to someone else’s treasure while helping reduce waste to landfill even more. This campaign began in 2010 as a part of a national reuse, community and sustainable living movement, and has now got over 150 councils across the country involved in the national day of garage sales which this year will be held on 22 October. It aims to unite communities, create awareness around issues of illegal dumping, create a platform for fund-raising, and encourage people to reuse and recycle. For the first 2500 registrants, Garage Sale Trail is offering a free advertising pack comprising posters and flyers to help the registrants get their garage sale up and running. Wodonga Council has been involved in the campaign for three years now encouraging residents to make the most of the opportunity to “de-clutter” their house, make some “pocket money” and get “involved” in the community. Wodonga councillor John Watson said October was the “perfect” month for a “spring clean” and encouraged residents to get involved. “It’s’ one of those days where we can de-clutter and meet our community in our streets and make some extra money from it as well,” Cr Watson said.

ABOUT 80 Wodonga Tafe staff will be putting on their cycling shoes and sweat bands to “keep the wheels spinning” throughout the week as they partake in a Tour de Office fund-raiser for Headspace Albury Wodonga. Tour de Office is a national initiative that aims to raise awareness about the health risks office workers face by sitting for prolonged periods of time. The Tafe took the challenge on board as part of its Health and Wellbeing program to get staff involved in physical activity while raising funds for Headspace through online sponsorship. The bike was set up in the Tafe’s cafe, where each rider is streamed live so that colleagues and students are able to watch each rider in action. By Tuesday morning the challenge had already raised $3000 and still with four days to peddle, quickly drawing closer to the Tafe’s target of $5000 by Friday. Wodonga Tafe CEO Mark Dixon rode the first leg of the challenge on Monday morning leading by example and encouraging other staff to take a break from work and have a go. “It’s all about health and wellbeing in the workforce and also about taking time out of

Youth space and cafe draws closer THE completion of the new youth space and cafe at the back of the LibraryMuseum is drawing nearer with landscaping having commenced on Monday. It indicates the final stages of the development with the work to be done around the construction of a cafe deck, improvements to the laneway from Kiewa Street, a new pathway linking the cafe to the QEII concourse, installation of an irrigation system, tree planting and new grass. The landscaping works are part of the Albury City Council’s QEII Square Master Plan which it is investing $1.39 million in the long-term vision to create a refreshing, modern and vibrant inner-city space. It will provide young people a safe and central place to visit, access information, hang out and play music. Young in ideas boom By Monique Kuzeff DURING the time of an ideas boom, innovation is being exposed often on the Border by local students - and Catholic College Wodonga Year 12 business students Lachie Whiteleg, Sam Hill, and Bryce Haley-Middie are no exceptions. The three students recently received an award from Victoria University for their ‘Healing Hills Jerky’ social enterprise, which comes as part of the university’s annual ‘I Plan A Business’ (iPAB) competition that enables student entrepreneurs to apply their innovative and businesslike skills to a social project. The students recently travelled to Melbourne to claim their award at a ceremony which had over 300 entrants for both the Social Enterprise and Business award categories. Their Healing Hills Jerky enterprise caters for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) sufferers from all public services. The idea goes that PTSD sufferers participate in outdoor activities in a group setting. Those activities range from bike riding, camping and hunting to fishing and hiking. They are accompanied by volunteer counsellors and are then able to bond in a calming outdoor environment with those also suffering from the condition. Any meat gained from the hunting is made into jerky which is then sold, and all proceeds are put back in to the program. Lachie said receiving the award was “unexpected” particularly after they missed out on winning a social enterprise award for it on the local level. “We are surprised about winning the award as we didn’t win the local one, so we thought we wouldn’t have a chance in the state one,” he said. “Everyone in our class just thought it was a joke.” Sam said the idea was partially inspired by one of their teachers who suffered from PTSD. “We all felt there was a lack of support on the PTSD side of things and there was no other enterprise around that does this kind of thing. “I’ve been making jerky for a while and I’ve always enjoyed hunting so I thought we could mix the two and get some proceeds to create a charity for PTSD out of it.” The students said the highlight of developing their social enterprise was being “creative” and “using skills” they learnt in their business subject. “We enjoyed developing some pretty interesting parts of it which has obviously made it stand out from all the others,” Bryce said. “It was complex at times when having to estimate costs because there is no other business like it, no template.”

Men on their minds By Monique Kuzeff MURRAY Art Museum Albury (MAMA) presents an action-packed exhibition ‘The Fast and The Curious’ for you to witness the first of its kind at our regional gallery. MAMA has brought something a little bit different to town that will be sure to pique the interest of anyone who enjoys a bit of motor action. This exhibition celebrates the region’s collection which has been growing since 1980 and has been made possible through the contribution of 69 private collection and commissioned artworks from 39 artists. It’s a real buzz in the gallery with the largescale artworks ranging from paintings, photography, sculpture and more, with themes stemming from speed of culture, impact on the environment and materiality. While regional galleries often put on a fashion exhibition, MAMA wanted to change things up a bit to attract all types of viewers including both male and female and the young and old. “This was put on to broaden and deepen our audience,” MAMA curator Bianca Acimovic said. “Women feel at home in a gallery but men don’t understand the artworks, they’re not connected to the artwork and it’s often because regional galleries put on a lot of fashion shows. “We are really trying to make MAMA for everyone, it’s meant to be a bit of fun, a bit bold, it’s meant to get the men in.” MAMA will also be putting various activities as part of the ‘Speed programs and events’ over the three months. A ‘Boys Bar’ will run every Thursday night from 5pm to 7pm and will include special guest speakers, slot cars and racing simulators. Bikers, custom bike designers, collectors and bike builders will be some of the guest speakers you can expect to see. The program also encompasses school holiday activities for the younger ones including a billykart derby, solar car challenge, paper planes, kids trail and more. Second-chance for ‘treasures’ ALBURY may soon gain a re-use shop at Albury Waste Management Centre to help further reduce waste to landfill and give life to unwanted items. AlburyCity Council shortlisted Aware Industries - a Border not-forprofit organisation that provides meaningful employment for people with disabilities - for negotiations to operate the re-use shop. The re-use shop could potentially create jobs for 10 or more local people, including some with disabilities, longterm job seekers and people retraining for new roles. Residents would be able to shop there as well as donate quality unwanted household items. It will operate separately from the general waste disposal areas and Albury Waste Management Centre will operate as normal. AlburyCity mayor Henk van de Ven said the re-use shop was great news on several fronts. “This is a new business opportunity that will help to reduce waste to landfill, give residents the chance to shop and give new life to unwanted goods and create jobs for people who really need opportunities,” Cr van de Ven said. “It’s anticipated the new recycling centre and the re-use shop will divert an extra 12,000 tonne of waste - that’s the weight of about 240 homes - from local landfill every year. “That’s great news for our community because it will help to extend the life of the landfill and create job opportunities for residents.” Aware Industries employ about 115 people and its work was recognised at the 2014 and 2015 Albury Wodonga Business Chamber Awards. The re-use shop is expected to open in December, following the opening of a new recycling centre in October.

PM’s CFA fix By Monique Kuzeff THE Prime Minister this week weighed in on the CFA’s contentious enterprise agreement. The EBA has all but divided the authority’s 800 paid firefighters and 60,000 volunteers over ‘control’ issues at the fireground and, although approved by the CFA board, is subject to Supreme Court action that will be heard in late September. But the body representing volunteers, the Volunteer Fire Brigade Victoria (VFBV), is pleased to see the Federal Government sticking to its word when it announced on Monday that it would amend the Fair Work Act to protect the role and work of volunteer firefighters.

In the VFBV’s eyes, the amendment would correct an anomaly in the Fair Work Act that enables EBAs for paid emergency service workers to include provisions which override State emergency management laws. VFBV CEO Andrew Ford welcomed the announcement and congratulated the Federal Government on the way it had worked with the volunteers in preparing the amendments. “We welcomed the announcement by the Prime Minister on 5 June at a VFB rally that his government would amend the Commonwealth’s industrial laws to protect CFA volunteers,” Mr Ford said. “If the proposed UFU agreement was adopted under current

Commonwealth industrial law it would mean that the organisation, operation and support of CFA volunteers as provided in the Victorian CFA Act would be legally changed as provided under the UFU industrial deal. “The proposed Commonwealth amendments also provide that volunteer organisations like VFBV will have a legal right to make submissions to the Fair Work Commission where the interests of volunteers would be affected by relevant emergency management enterprise agreements.” He welcomed the support from across the political spectrum to “defend, support and build community-based volunteer capacity”.

New foot fund-raiser planned OUR local Carevan Foundation hosted its first major fund-raiser of the year, The Corporate Sleepout, last Wednesday and is now challenging itself to its second major fund-raiser the “Carevan Community Challenge” to be held in September. This will go forth as the inaugural fun run/walk fundraiser event for Carevan, which hopes to see over 200 participants to help raise a minimum of $5000 to go 100 per cent back in to the initiative. The event encompasses a choice of a 5km ($30) or 10km ($35) walk or run, with a fee of $15 for entrants 15 years and younger. A professional sports event

organiser will be hosting the event to ensure that the day runs smoothly and that all professional and non-professional participants are able to be manually timed at their attempt. Not only is this event about raising funds for a great cause and challenging yourself, but it also aims to raise social awareness of homelessness in our community. Carevan founder John Brabant said the Carevan Community Challenge came as a “social awareness” and “inclusion” fund-raiser to help prompt “social change”. He also said the event tied in well with one of the “key messages” of the initiative. “Carevan highly encourages good nutrition and health, teaching those on the street and

Passion on the walls ARTISTS from southern NSW and north east Victoria are expected to exhibit more than 300 works at the Holbrook Rotary Art Show to be staged at the Holbrook hall from Friday, 26 August to Saturday, 3 September. “Our art and photography show is a notable event in Holbrook and Greater Hume Shire calendar,” art show chairman Milt Golenberg said. “Held annually for more than 40 years, the art show raised funds over $6000 in 2015 for our Rotary community projects. “We are excited to announce the art show’s two feature artists

will be Bendigo’s Carolyn Marrone and Jenny Nuthall from Binalong.” Working in watercolours, Jenny Nuthall enjoys depicting landscapes, still life and street scenes. She has exhibited in Sydney, Mollymook and Jugiong. Bendigo’s Carolyn Marrone has a passion for anything Italian, and visits the country every couple of years with husband Mario. She has a fascination for the old ways in the villages and uses these experiences to breathe life into her charcoal and pen drawings, and brushwork.

The Art Show committee offers a collection and return of art works in selected towns: Albury/Wodonga, Corowa/ Rutherglen, Tumbarumba, Wangaratta and Wagga Wagga. The exhibition will open Friday night August 26 and daily Monday to Friday from 12pm to 5pm, Saturday to Sunday from 10am to 4pm. Dine among the art at the opening - $30 per head and $20 for exhibiting artists and concession. Daily entry: adults $5, concession $2. Special arrangements can be made outside given hours for groups.

The cast of Zumbo's Just Desserts. Gigi Falanga is Zumbo’s assistant on the factory floor, helping the dessert makers keep to time after they power up their dessert stations. There’ll be plenty of thrills and spills as they battle the factory clock and their nerves to finish on time. Judges Zumbo and Koo risk life and limb - OK, maybe cavities and diabetes - to taste and critique all their creations. The two dessert makers with the weakest creations must then compete in the Zumbo Test. Known as the Patissier of Pain, Zumbo will unveil a fantastical and challenging never-before-

seen creation from underneath the Dessert Dome, which the bottom two contestants must replicate. Zumbo and Khoo will score the dishes out of 10. The lowest scoring contestant will be eliminated. It’s a baptism of fire with someone sent home every episode. Just to sweeten the deal the winner of the competition will not only take home $100,000 in prize money but they’ll also have one of their creations in Zumbo’s stores. Did we need another cooking competition show? Probably not but it looks to be a lot of fun none-the-less.

Local Sport Strikers go out on a high THE STRIKERS women have finished their Capital League Hockey season on a high with a 3-1 win over University of Canberra at home on Saturday. The young team finished sixth in the elite competition, missing out on the final - but with organisers looking to eventually drop the Capital league from 10 to six teams, it is still a promising result. Their male counterparts also missed the finals - finishing seventh, just one point off sixth spot. Despite their lack of finals, hockey officials in Albury Wodonga were happy with the results from the sides, which are both in rebuilding mode after a season, particularly for the women, of bringing young players through the ranks. The local regular hockey season has now also finished with teams looking to the finals, which hit off this weekend.

Wintry blast for spring classic IT may have been the first spring classic of the year, but the weather suggested otherwise as rain, hail, and icecold wind greeted riders in Oxley for the Sam Miranda Winery weekend of racing. It is a magnificent event, showcasing the beauty of north-east Victoria, with quality wine and food for spectators, supporting the riders who come from around the country. Friday was the entree, with the short Dal Zotto wines 9km individual time trial for the elite men’s and women’s national road series (NRS) riders over the slightly undulating road from Whitfield to Cheshunt and back. For the men, Joe Cooper of the Avanti IsoWhey Sports team cleaned up in a time of 10:10 and Lisen Hockings won the women’s in 11:58. Joe Cooper’s time is impressive as the NRS rules don’t allow the men to ride full time trial bikes. Stage two was a mid-afternoon criterium around the Wangaratta CBD, but with over 10mm of rain falling in a short period, rider safety was placed first and the stage cancelled. As the rain continued, it created plenty of time to speculate about the 113km strade nero, or black gravel stage. The technical manual had received a last-minute update at the request of the police, adding another two sections of black gravel on the run back into the

Saturday morning, 130 elite men and later in the day just under 100 women rolled out in conditions that left you wondering if it would be snowing at the 600m altitude KoM above Whitfield. Heading south on the WangarattaKilferra road, the strong north-westerly breeze pushed bunches not the gutter and lined them out as each surge in different grades saw multiple riders popping out the back as they failed to find shelter from the wind. The first dirt section while only 1.7km long, was popping water bottles from cages with riders swapping lines from each side of the road dodging potholes and seeking a balance between the smooth slippery lines and the hard rough sections. A few kilometres later the next obstacle was the KoM near Myrrhee school, which local, Jess Featonby, won in the elite men. After a short decent, what the crosswinds didn’t split earlier in the bunches, the climb up the 5.9km muddy, black gravel did. The road edges alternated between smooth and corrugated. The middle was consistently rocky and rough. Across the KoM line, the next few hundred metres were slippery and flat, and black mud sprayed like someone had turned on a hose. sections awaited, and if the juncture wasn’t made in the next 10km it was race over. The final dirt sections were flat, fast and energy sapping with riders needing to pound away in a big gear to keep the speed high over little corrugations, ripples and rocks. The new course brought the bunches back out onto the main Whitfield Road, just north of the Edi cutting, and a 20km flat drag to the final kilometre with a dog leg for the sprint into the carpark. Bike handling was the order of the day as the elite riders entered the carpark at over 50km an hour. Sprinting four abreast through centimetre deep puddles and over a small speed bump, Pat Shaw of Avanti IsoWhey Sports won by the smallest of mar-

gins with an average of over 40km/h. Albury Wodonga’s Jess Featonby finished in the main bunch, and his efforts won him the most aggressive rider for the stage. The women handled the finish with equal skill, with the High 5 team controlling the sprint, lining the bunch out almost single file, for the current world pursuit champion Rebecca Wiasak to take a comfortable win. Locals, Taryn Heather and Maddie Wright both finished in the front bunch. In the lower grades, the Bended Elbow team rider Brad Rose took an impressive solo victory in C Grade elite, after hitting the remaining eight riders with three kilometres to go. On Sunday, riders tackled a 100km circuit over the Warby ranges, covering

both Taminick and Ryan’s gap. In the men’s race, the Avanti IsoWhey Sport team controlled the race, ensuring the final run into Sam Miranda would be a contest for the true sprinters that may have been dropped the day before on the Whitfield climb. Scott Law of the NSWIS team took the win, and Joe Cooper the overall title. In the women’s race over 80 km, Kate Mcilroy from the Specialised women’s team sprinted to victory with her team-mate Taryn Heather the best local in 12th and Maddie Wright also in the front bunch. Lisen Hockings from the Holden women’s team, took the general classification.
