Cash cards skimmed By Aneeka Simonis A 71-YEAR-OLD Pakenham man is among many to have had large sums of money fraudulently pulled from their bank account at compromised ATMS in town. The Bendigo Bank ATM in Lakeside is the number one offender in the card skimming spate which has left several cardholders with frozen accounts. On Monday 15 August, the longterm Pakenham resident's entire daily allowance of $1000 was skimmed from his account after a trip to the Lakeside ATM. When he went to report it to the tellers at the Bendigo Bank teller office in Pakenham Main Street, he was told, ‘you’ve been skimmed ... and you’re not the only one’. Now, his account has been frozen for a week as he awaits a new card to be issued. A number of other cardholders reported being skimmed after using the Bendigo Bank ATM in Lakeside. But apparently it’s not the only ATM residents should be wary of. Commonwealth Bank’s ATM at Arena Shopping Centre in Officer has also been named in the card skimming fraud. The heightened number of skimming reports appears to have given cardholders a scare, with many reporting they intend to boycott ATMs and get their cash out at supermarkets. Many are reporting getting phone calls from their bank to notify them their bank details have been compromised and that their accounts will be closed until the issue was sorted. The Gazette contacted Bendigo Bank and Commonwealth Bank to understand what they are doing to protect cardholders from future scams. “Commonwealth Bank is concerned when any of its customers are affected by fraudulent activities, and takes detection and prevention of fraud seriously,” a spokesperson said.

ATM users have been warned.

Several people have reported that their cards were skimmed at the Bendigo Bank, Lakeside ATM. “From time to time we see instances of suspicious behaviour and scams, and we work with law enforcement agencies and regulatory authorities to ensure staff are alerted to fraudulent activities.”

A Bendigo Bank spokesperson said they had fraud monitoring strategies in place to prevent and detect fraud, and that cardholders whose details had been skimmed would be notified immediately.

The bank takes these events very seriously, and works with both industry partners and law enforcement to combat fraud. The banks reminded cardholders to

protect their pin at all times and report suspicious activity. Most cardholders reported their card was skimmed over the weekend beginning Saturday 13 August.

ORGANISERS hope proceeds from Friday’s sold-out third annual Cardinia Casey Biggest Ever Blokes Lunch will top the $100,000 mark. Close to 450 people are expected to cram into the Cardinia Cultural Centre to hear three of the AFL 400-club players -Kevin Bartlett, Michael Tuck and Dustin Fletcher - speak. The only other member of the elite group, new games record holder Brent Harvey, cannot attend because he plays in Hobart the next day, but has participated via a video recording. The first two lunches raised a combined $153,000, all of which was given to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia to fund research and awareness initiatives. Organising committee chairman Garry Howe said tickets to the third lunch sold out 10 weeks ago, with the event now firmly entrenched on the local social calendar. Garry said the event had received outstanding support from the community, both in terms of table bookings and donation of auction and raffle items. “It would be great to top the $100,000 fund-raising mark this year so we can stamp out this cancer scourge,” he said. “But it’s not all about the money. Men are notoriously bad at going to the doctor to get checked and the lunch is also very much about awareness. We also have medical experts coming along to speak and hopefully get that message through.” Berwick urologist Shekib Shahbaz will speak on behalf of St John of God, who have supported the event since its inception. Drive to uncork bottleneck By Alana Mitchelson A PETITION advocating for the upgrade of one of Pakenham’s most dangerous level crossings has been launched to prompt State Government action. The campaign supports the widening of McGregor Road at the railway crossing to eliminate the bottleneck, reduce traffic delays and improve safety. State Bass MP Brian Paynter, whose office launched the petition, has called on the State Government to take immediate responsibility. “This is a major bottleneck causing disruption to local residents and business alike. It also puts public safety at risk with our emergency services having difficulty moving through the area at certain times,” Mr Paynter said. “I get a number of calls and emails each week from residents who are not only frustrated with the bank up of traffic around the McGregor Road rail crossing during peak periods, but are concerned about the risks people take as they weave in and out of the boom gates when they are down. “The Andrews Government forgot about Pakenham when they were handing out contracts for rail crossing upgrades. It’s not good enough to leave McGregor Road on the backburner.” Pakenham resident and driving instructor Elaina Haig said she drives over the crossing about 10 times a day and has seen the bottleneck and signal issues cause “extreme” congestion and safety concerns. Ms Haig has recorded that on 27 July and 4 August, the boom gates were lowered but no train passed the crossing, inconveniencing motorists. “I’ve waited up to 20 minutes for imaginary trains to go past. Then it’s like a Mexican stand-off of who’s going to drive around the boom gates and across the tracks first because everyone’s just over it. “Once you’re there, you’re stuck

and you’re forced to do something dangerous or illegal,” she said. “I had to cancel one of my driving lessons a couple of weeks ago due to a delays of over 20 minutes - with no trains going past, which left me at a $55 loss. “It’s not good for my business, not fair for my students, emergency vehicles, buses, and people trying to get to work on time or people picking up children from school. “It’s getting worse and worse. But no one’s been run over, so we’ll just have to wait until that happens and fix it afterwards I guess. I can’t help but feel like that’s their attitude.” Resident Carole Maybus said she used the road daily and had witnessed many near misses. “I’ve seen a lot of people rear ending into the car in front of them along McGregor Road from as far back as Heritage Springs because people are frustrated and travelling at 70km/h,” Ms Maybus said. “When you see child seat restraints sitting on the road and paramedics assessing young children, it’s quite upsetting. It scares me. “Since the duplication of McGregor Road, the problem has been magnified. I believe the council should have lobbied harder for the State Government to widen the crossing when they duplicated McGregor Road. “Now when, and if, they widen the crossing, it’s going to cause double the inconvenience for roadworks. “It can take a minimum 25 minutes to get from Park Boulevard, opposite Heritage Springs, to reach the crossing because of the bottleneck.” Nearby resident Bernard Kearney said there were also “serious“ safety concerns surrounding the Rogers Street right-hand turn immediately after the level crossing when travelling north towards Pakenham from the freeway. “There’s going to be a serious accident there one day - there’s going to

There should not be any entry there.” Cardinia Shire assets and services general manager Mike Ellis said that since 2009 the council has spent $8 million to duplicate McGregor Road from the Pakenham Bypass to the Princes Highway and that it was the State Government’s responsibility to extend duplication through to the crossing.

“Duplication of the crossing will improve safety and provide greater access to business and residential areas in the Pakenham CBD, which will flow through to increased business activity and employment,” Mr Ellis said. On behalf of the Minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allan, a department spokesman said the signals at the McGregor Road crossing were operating normally and posed “no safety risk”. “We’re focused on removing 12 level crossings between Pakenham and the city and upgrading signalling along the corridor to relieve congestion and

run more trains for local passengers,” he said. “The crossing at McGregor Road will be considered for removal in future budgets beyond the removal of the first 50 crossings.” In 48 hours the Upgrade McGregor Road Crossing Facebook page received about 300 likes and more than 100 people had signed the online petition. A white Nissan carrying a woman and a toddler flipped after colliding with a BMW. 157918

A MOTHER and toddler were rushed to hospital when their car ended up on its side after a collision in Officer on Thursday morning. Police told the Gazette that a witness saw the woman travelling north along Cardinia Road and that her Nissan collided with a BMW turning right out of Damon Street near Arena Shopping Centre, about 9.55am on Thursday 11 August. The angle of the impact caused the woman’s car to flip on its side. CFA firefighters at the scene said that a woman and child, who appeared to be about two years old,

had been inside the overturned car at the time of the crash. The crew had the situation under control by 10.30am. An ambulance was called to the incident and took the woman to Casey Hospital to be assessed for minor injuries. The driver of the BMW was not injured as a result of the crash. Cardinia Highway Patrol, SES and two CFA vehicles were also called to scene. Cardinia Road was cordoned off between Damon Street and Arena Shopping Centre while the cars were towed away.

A FORMER Canberrabased diplomat has held police at bay during a house siege in Endeavour Hills and was at another time found naked in his car with three samurai swords, a court heard. Prior to the siege on 30 July, Ashfaq Hussain, 34, had started stabbing his bedroom door and walls with a knife, declaring “he’d lost the plot” to a concerned housemate. Later that evening, he wielded a butcher’s knife and told his three housemates he’d “kill all of you” as they tried to flee out the front door. The housemates barricaded themselves in a room, and two of them later fled out a rear door. At 7pm, a critical-incident-response police cordon was formed outside. They were concerned that an armed Hussain and one of his housemates remained in the house, the court was told. After a peaceful negotiation, Hussain was safely removed about 8.45pm. At the time, Hussain was on bail for separate offences. He told police he was “insane” and lived a “delusional life”. After a while, police

“He tells me that’s essentially the reason behind these incidents.” Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said it was hard to distinguish between the impact of Hussain’s bipolar disorder and drug use, including ice, cannabis and alcohol. “You yourself draw the link between your drug use, your mental health and your offending. “If you comply with your corrections order and the medication and keep away from any drugs, the chances of you having any contact with the courts are very low.” Mr Vandersteen noted “tens of thousands of dollars” of police resources were used to arrest the accused at the siege, which could have ended much more seriously. “You have had a lot go against you in the last couple of years, but I appreciate you’re still an intelligent person.” Mr Vandersteen urged Hussain to comply with a community treatment order and a new 12-month treatment-based, supervisory community corrections order. He said Hussain’s 16day stint in remand custody was time served. The seized weapons were forfeited.

The accused was also charged with threatening to harm an ex-girlfriend in March and with driving an unregistered car with a suspended ACT driver’s licence and without number plates in Noble Park in May. Defence lawyer Emma Strugnell said the accused arrived in Australia as a young adult, and retired as a diplomat in Canberra onto a disability pension when diagnosed with mental health issues in 2015. He then moved to Melbourne where he had little family support, Ms Strugnell said. “There has not been 100 per cent compliance with his medication.

IF IT looks like a lemon and is coloured like a lemon surely this 1986 ex-RACV service vehicle is a lemon. It’s just a pity that the mighty Meteor doesn’t come with a current RACV mechanic in tow as its owners Emily and Martin contemplate a 3800-kilometre odyssey from Adelaide to Cairns via the lonely expanses of central Australia. The Endeavour Hills couple picked up the station wagon - with just a couple of front dents and in need of a new head gasket - for a princely $600 to compete in next year’s cancer charity fundraiser Shitbox Rally. “The car runs a bit but not for a long time,” Emily said. Emily and Martin’s aptly-named Without A Paddle team will dress the car up as an RACV mobile fix-it van as they join the fun convoy of other sub-$1000 shitboxes through the Red Centre’s dusty roads in late May. About 10 per cent of the fleet are expected to make the finish line within a week. AN ACCUSED’S faith in his lawyers was unshaken despite being forced to stay a further month in Dandenong police cells due to the lawyers being apparently unable to visit him. In a letter to Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 15 August, the lawyers requested an adjournment until 8 September. The judge asked the accused if he wanted to see Victoria Legal Aid lawyers instead. “It’s not good enough that you’re remanded in custody and no one speaks to you. “If they’re representing you, they should drive out here and see you in the cells.” The man, facing a six-week total stint in the cells, said he’d prefer to stick with the lawyers who had previously represented him. REPORTER Cameron Lucadou-Wells received recognition from the TAC Towards Zero Media Awards this week. He received a Highly Commended runnersup award in the metropolitan section for his story on the death of two teenagers in a car crash in Kallista in May. Judges said the story Brothers in Grief was a “compelling” account, which included Mr Lucadou-Wells’ insight into losing his own brother in a car crash 20 years ago. PAKENHAM teenagers will be among 3000 students performing at this year’s Victorian State Schools Spectacular. Two hundred government schools from across the state will be represented in the form of dance, music, song, puppetry, magic as well as behindthe scenes stage management, lighting and audio roles. By Cam Lucadou-Wells THIS year’s Walk in the Park will be no ‘walk in the park’ for ambassador and perennial participant Anne Atkin. Ms Atkin, of Hallam, is recovering from major brain surgery and a painful back injury, and will be confined to a motorised scooter for the major annual fund-raiser for Parkinson’s Victoria on 28 August. Initially expecting to be an event scratching, she says she’s pleased to still be travelling in relative comfort during the scenic Yarra River route from Federation Square. “A friend has just rang me to offer me a motorised scooter, so I’m looking forward to joining in.”

Ms Atkin, who also runs a Painting with Parkinson’s art group, has walked in all seven previous events. Aside from three bulging discs in her back, Ms Atkin said she was recuperating well from her radical six-hour surgery in late May in which her brain was wired to an electricity-generating ‘pacemaker’. The operation has freed her movement, though unsteadied her sense of balance. She says her neurologist has sternly warned her not to climb due to her increased risk of falls. “I really feel almost normal. It’s a problem because I forget to take a tablet or I start to run and trip over.”

Ms Atkin is putting her finishing touches to a book on her journey towards deciding to have surgery, including being badly shook up by a car crash. Despite that ordeal, her story still manages to look at the “funny side of life”, she says. About 3000 walkers are expected to register for A Walk In the Park, raising more than $100,000 for research towards finding a cure for Parkinson’s. Ms Atkin, who is aiming to raise $500, says the foundation receives “very little” government funding. EVER heard of FODMAP? Well, nor had the Dine Local correspondent until he plunged into a low fermentable oligosaccharides, di-saccharides, mono-saccharides and polyols diet two weeks ago. Since trialling low-FODMAP, his roaring, irritable gut has been tamed but dining out has turned into a veritable minefield. After all, when you cut out fructose-rich fruits, lactose, wheat, rye, garlic, onions, certain sweet vegies and gaseous legumes like baked beans, what the hell is there left to eat? The other swirling questions were: how long will it take to get sick of quinoa and rice? How long can one endure rice-flake porridge for breakfast? What tastes good without onions or garlic? Or, as the correspondent’s son put it: “What’s that mush?” “It is what it is, son,” came the reply. One still wasn’t sure while eating at a famed health-conscious restaurant with loads of vegan and gluten-free options that it was FODMAP friendly. Rather than blindly gorging on the exotic culinary delights of Melbourne’s south east, Dine Local sought some expert advice. Monash University’s Department of Gastroenterology is researching the low-FODMAP diet and has published a guide and app listing friendly and unfriendly foods. It has particularly uninspiring advice on dining out for those with an adventurous palate. It recommends ignoring curries, soups or pasta dishes on the menu. Instead, take a serve of plain meat or fish with

Alternatively try a Korean barbecue or a Japanese restaurant, the guide suggests. Cutting out most of the planet’s most spicy and unique offerings goes straight against the Dine Local philosophy. But oddly, bland food has never tasted better. Perhaps because the correspondent is suffering half-starvation when he faces his simplified meals. Or perhaps it’s a simple feeling of thanks from a sensitive gut that has endured a lifetime of ‘whatever goes’. One important note: if you’re afflicted by irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), colitis or any other chronic gut disruption, consult a dietician first before trialling the low-FODMAP diet.

BROOKE Skewes lost her best friend in a horror car smash in Lynbrook seven years ago and has maintained close ties to the family ever since. It is through those close ties to the family that Ms Skewes has decided to raise funds to help the family with its ongoing struggle. Ms Skewes was very close to 16-year-old Riyani Lowen who tragically lost her life at the intersection of Hallam and Ormond roads at 1.30am on 28 June 2009. Since then Ms Skewes has done everything she can to support Riyani’s mother Emma and younger sister Casey who was born with cerebral palsy. Since the accident Emma Lowen has developed PTSD from the shock loss of her eldest daughter and the strain of caring for her youngest. Ms Skewes cares deeply for the Lowen family and has organised a fundraising day to help Emma Lowen get the treatment she needs and offer more support for Casey. “I met them when I was 10 and I’m 22 now,” Ms Skewes said. “I was friends with Riyani when we lost her in the car accident in 2009 but I have maintained a relationship with the family.” Ms Skewes said she has seen first-hand the toll Riyani’s death has taken on her mother. “I think that, at the start, when it was fresh, a massive influx of attention and support was put on the family but as time has gone by that has died off,” she said. “For Emma the longer time passes, the worse it has been for her.” Ms Skewes has organised a family fun day in Hampton Park that is open to the community to raise much needed money for Lowens. “I wanted to put the day on as I have a Gofundme account and I thought putting on an event to raise money and raise awareness of the Gofundme site would really help,” she said. ST JOHN of God Berwick Hospital is proudly running its Community Wig Service within the Specialist Centre at Kangan Drive, Berwick. The service, launched in April 2016, is free of charge and available to anybody in the community who is suffering from cancer related hair loss. Currently, there is a wide selection of wigs available for loan in a variety of styles, lengths and colours. Patients are required to make an appointment by calling 8793 0550. During their visit, they will be greeted by one of the hospital’s fully trained volunteers who will assist in the selection and fitting of a suitable wig. The volunteers will also provide information about styling and wig care. The service has been funded through the very generous donations of many within the community, from individuals to larger fundraising groups. These funds have been used to set up the facility and will be used to purchase more wigs as demand requires, professionally sanitize the wigs after they are returned, maintain the Wig Room and consistently train new volunteers. “The Community Wig Service has been developed to service the community. “Along with our Day Oncology Centre, which opened in March 2015, we are developing services which complement the expanding hospital and it’s increasing suite of specialties, to open next door at Kangan Drive in 2017. “We have spent a lot of time planning what we can offer to this community, which is rapidly growing, to ensure we meet their needs not only today but also in the future,” explains Lisa Evans, Director of Nursing. “The Community Wig Service also gives us an

Ghulamâ€™s Mission possible GHULAM Abbas was 19 and alone when he arrived in Australia from Afghanistan as a desperate refugee. Now, just 10 months later, Ghulam is making a new life for himself, thanks to a lot of hard work, determination and some support from Mission Australiaâ€™s Transition to Work program. Safely in Australia, Ghulam was determined to complete his secondary schooling and pursue his dream of becoming an apprentice electrician. He enrolled in English classes, but found the going tough because of the diverse English skill levels of his classmates. Adding to his frustration was the fact that every school Ghulam applied for had rejected his application, with most not offering an explanation. Stranded in a new country and with no family support, Ghulamâ€™s dream seemed impossible. However, his hopes were revived when a teacher recommended Mission Australiaâ€™s Transition to Work program, based in Dandenong. Mission Australiaâ€™s Claire Cook said the Transition to Work program was designed for people between the ages of 15 to 21 struggling to connect with education or employment, and assists them by providing pathways to educational services

What’s on Stitch up a course THE Narre Warren North Uniting Church is about to commence three new community programes: Stitch and Chat, a disadvantaged toddlers group and affordable cooking. Stitch and Chat is a weekly practical workshop for sewing crafts - knitting, embroidery, quilting, crochet - led by a guest facilitator. The disadvantaged toddlers support group is a self-help support group for parents whose severely disadvantaged children are unable to participate in mainstream pre-school activities. Silverbacks pile it on By Russell Bennett THE Pakenham Silverbacks have piled on another massive score in Division 2 of the Gridiron Victoria men’s competition, storming to a 57-6 win over the Melton Wolves at Namatjira Reserve in Clayton South on Saturday. But the end margin didn’t quite tell the full story for the Silverbacks, who still have plenty to work on over the weeks leading up to the playoffs in October. Star import quarterback Kevin Russell nursed a tender hamstring for Saturday’s clash but still made his presence felt throughout the first half. Yet the side, as a whole, was far from firing on all cylinders through a series of dropped catches out wide, and some decisive runs let through the teeth of the defence. The Silverbacks obliterated the Wolves 50-0 in week

two, and although Saturday’s margin was bigger, it didn’t reflect the improvement to the Melton defense in particular. Toby Currie returned to the Silverbacks’ line-up on Saturday after an injury layoff and he made an immediate impact - particularly with his Point After Touchdown (PAT) kicking. The Silverbacks were up 22-6 at the half but coach Mel Martin gave them a rev-up late in the second for their apparent laziness at stages, and then another at the half-time break when he urged his side to show the rest of the competition just how well they could play. The message was received loud and clear as the beasts of the Silverbacks’ defense roared to life. “We’re at the promoting stages - we want to grow the game, we want to get as many grades as possible, and we want to move forward from there.” The Eels are currently operating out of makeshift rooms at O’Neil Road but have plans to secure a more permanent home and facilities. “At the moment we’ve only got the one field that we use for all of our teams,” Laumua said. “We had seven visiting teams on Saturday and spent the whole day out there and played the whole day’s games on the one field.” The Eels have built it, and the players have come. THERE are already more than 300 people involved at the Pakenham Eels Rugby League club and Touch Association, which has teams across seven grades despite the fact that 2016 is its first year of existence. It’s a remarkable achievement for the club, which just competed in its debut season as part of the Victorian Rugby League. Every Tuesday and Thursday night during the season, the club’s base at the O’Neil Road Recreation Reserve in Beaconsfield is buzzing - and for good reason. This is a club that’s going places, and it’s going there fast. “It started as a club that was based off other rugby league clubs in the south east,” said Fred Laumua, one of the

club’s junior coaches. “The players all played for various clubs around Casey and Dandenong and met each other through the other clubs and decided that instead of travelling out maybe we could get something going for ourselves out here.” The club contacted the Victorian Rugby League, which is in association with the National Rugby League, about entering sides into competition. The original idea was to enter a couple of junior teams (including a girls’ tag team) and potentially a senior side as well. Instead, the club has teams across seven junior grades and there are big plans for the senior arm moving forward. “Some of our players had never even played the game before this year,” Laumua said.

TOORADIN’S season - one that looked destined for the scrap heap last week - has been rejuvenated after the Seagulls scored a thrilling 46-43 victory over Beaconsfield on Saturday. A loss to the Eagles would have ended the season for coach Kelly Haynes and her side, but victory now sees them with a massive chance of playing finals. The Seagulls - who sit sixth and have the bye - need third-placed Hampton Park to defeat fifth-placed Cranbourne this week and a finals berth is assured. Haynes was thrilled with the effort to defeat a side that had only previously been defeated by the unbeaten Narre Warren this season. “That’s an understatement,” said an excited Haynes, who last week agreed to a two-year extension to

her first year at the helm. “It was like a final, it was loud, the footballers were cheering us on and the girls really responded.” Dayle Willis (GS), 26 goals, and Alex Duff (GA), 20, shared the workload up front, while Haynes (GK) and Ebony Dolan (GD) did a great job in defence. Beacy hit the front in the last term but looked unsettled from the start after last week’s game against Cranbourne that saw defender Dani Cameron suspended and coach Simon O’Shanassy reprimanded for poor behaviour. Beaconsfield was beaten by a better team on Saturday in a game that indirectly hurt Cranbourne’s finals aspirations. Amanda McKenna (C) and Zoe Mason (WD) were strong through the midcourt for Beacy. Despite the setback, Cranbourne will still fancy its chances of playing

finals after pushing Narre Warren in its 55-42 defeat at Kalora Park. Donna Wilson’s girls scored 14-9 in the second quarter to draw level, before a quick start to the third term saw them open up a three-goal lead. But the Magpies aren’t the reigning champs for nothing, lifting their rating towards the end of the third term to score a very impressive victory in the end. Chloe Phillips (GS) exploded into action for the Magpies in the final term, while skipper Tara Cecil (GK) and excitement-machine Alanah Hardy (GA) were at their irresistible best for the vanquished. Hampton Park will take on Beaconsfield in the qualifying final in a fortnight’s time after securing third place with a high-quality 54-50 victory over Doveton at Robert Booth Reserve. The Redbacks took the early initiative - and it proved crucial - in a

game that levelled into an even contest after quarter time. There were some great battles all over the court, with Kim Coulson (GK) and Rania Waller (GD) taking on Doveton shooters Rahni Samason (GS) and Shae Gee (GA), while Monalisa Groom (C) and Aila Pera (C) had a great duel in the midcourt. And finally, ROC secured its fourth win for the season with a nail-biting 38-37 triumph over Berwick at Edwin Flack Reserve. ROC kicked out to an eight-goal lead at half time before Emily LaRoche (C), Sarah McDermott (WA) and Mikaela Greer (GA) inspired a gutsy comeback from the hosts. It came down to the great ball-handling skills of Ash Barnett (C) and goalers Lauren Hargreaves (GS) and Sam Neil (GA) to get the job done in a tight one. Pakenham had the bye.

Berwick took the sting out of its contest with Officer early, kicking 4.4 to 0.2 against the breeze on its way to an even 100-point victory at Edwin Flack Reserve. And it was the two best players on the ground that did the initial damage, with Mitch Johnson kicking three and Ash Smith capping off a fine first quarter with an early major. The Wickers compounded the damage with an 8.1 to 3.4 blitz in the second term, opening up a 53-point lead and extending after half time. Johnson finished with six, Luke Nelson four, while Smith, Johnson and Lucas Jellyman-Turner were the Wickers best four-quarter contributors.

In other games, Michael Henry kicked four and Shannon Henwood and Mitch Lewis three each in Doveton’s 54-point victory over Hampton Park, while Beaconsfield continued to impress coach Clint Evans with a 51-point triumph over Tooradin at Westernport Oval. “I think we’ve played some really good footy over the last three weeks,” Evans said. “I’ve been really happy with our intensity, our pressure is where we want it to be, and we need to sustain that pressure to stay in games.” Beau Dowler kicked three for the winners who had Josh Dodsworth, Nick McPherson and youngster Kade Lynch all at the top of their games. Citroen’s hardy motor By Derek Ogden IT'S hard to take seriously a car that’s named after a spiky plant that lives in desolate sun-scorched, rockstrewn deserts. There again, to exist in such a harsh and lifeless environment shows a degree of strength and the ability to adapt. Maybe this is what Citroen had in mind when it thought up the moniker ‘Cactus’ for its compact hatchback. The Citroen C4 Cactus comes in two Exclusive versions featuring extensive standard equipment and reasonable pricing - $26,990 for a turbocharged PureTech petrol manual and $29,990 for a semi-automatic

diesel variant. Both prices are plus on-road costs. Premium paint added $800 to the test car powered by a 1.2-litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine mated with a five-speed manual transmission.
