A festival of jobs By MONIQUE KUZEFF NORTH East Victoria has its sights set on fostering the jobs and growth message as it presents the Small Business Festival in its fourth consecutive year. The festival, held over August, holds over 450 events and covers more than 20 topics offering an extensive range of free and low-cost activities and events, workshops, and networking opportunities for new and established businesses across Victoria. Over 35 events are being held in regional cities and towns in the North East including Wodonga, Wangaratta, Benalla, Tallangatta, Rutherglen, Bright and Indigo. Wodonga Chamber of Commerce membership vitality manager Tara Leach said the festival offered accessible and affordable information and strategies to business people. “It encourages people to think about their businesses and work on it rather than just in it,” Ms Leach said. “That’s something a lot of owners forget to do, so it helps to prompt consideration and inspire some change in their businesses if they require it. “This region has great business diversity and potential so it’s fantastic these events are being brought right to our doorstep.” Some of the events and workshops offered include online sales strategies ($10), social media for small business ($10), conscious business boot camp ($25), build a seven-figure business ($20), leverage from major events (free), business grants and assistance explained (free)
and a business growth strategy in a changed world ($15). Business people are able to learn about how to engage their employees in their business and how to obtain and use support incomes,” Ms Leach said. “It’s very beneficial for a business if the owner is able to engage their team to work efficiently within the business.. “The employees also get value from feeling more a part of the team and it encourages them to achieve more. “You can also learn how to utilise income streams such as grant funding and how to apply for those.” Ms Leach encouraged new and established businesses to attend the festival saying “networking is important” and it gives owners the opportunity to expose their business and network with others. “You never know who you might meet at these kinds of events. Good dose of rough sleep By MONIQUE KUZEFF FINANCIAL planners, school teachers, real estate agents and vets were some of the businesspeople who did it a “little bit rough” when they rolled their swag out in the cold on Wednesday to experience what it might be like living as a homeless person on the Border. This experience came as part of Carevan’s second Corporate Sleepout which saw over 70 businesspeople from 38 local businesses who sacrificed their heated houses and warm beds to sleep out on a hard stone floor at Wodonga Race Club. The event, which pulled in about $30,000, aimed to raise funds to assist Carevan with its operational costs while raising awareness on the homelessness by getting local businesspeople to put themselves in the shoes of those less fortunate for a night. Carevan project officer Stacey Franklin, who played a key role in organising the event, said homelessness was not obvious in everyday life so the sleepout experience intended to drive it home. “We want our community to understand and have compassion for those who are doing it really tough,” Ms Franklin said. “There are too many people who are struggling financially and with mental health, disabilities and domestic violence.” She said that the funds would be directed to the Kids Cooking and Caring program, operational costs and “possibly” another food van. “We are hoping to start an additional Carevan night in Wodonga, so we will put some of the money into that. “We also want to use the money to expand our Kids Cooking and Car-

He said it was a great opportunity for him to experience what it was like for those people living homeless on the Border. “Through this we are gaining a bit of an understanding of what they average homeless person actually goes through night after night. “Although, it’s a shame it wasn’t raining to make us feel a little bit worse,” Mr Brabant joked. RSM accountants Ryan Hastie and Adam Eady participated in the event because they wanted to “give back” and support the Carevan in some way. “We understand that the North East
has a lot of homelessness and the number is high against the state average,” Mr Hastie said. “We wanted to roll up our sleeves and help out where we could.” He said it was “eye opening” to learn what it might be like being homeless by putting oneself in another person’s shoes. “You could be one day away from being homeless and having nothing. “You can’t get a job, you’ve got no money and it turns into a really bad cycle - this event makes us think about what it might be like, what we could do to help and to appreciate our homes and warm bed.” The Carevan Foundation will be holding its second major fund-raiser, the Carevan Community Challenge, on 25 September. Sessions show that mothering matters By MONIQUE KUZEFF RAISING awareness about the array of supportive services and facilities for young parents in Wodonga was the aim of the Supporting Young Parents program held on Thursday at the Felltimber Community Centre. The sessions will run over four weeks and are free to all young parents under 25 who would like to engage with the services and learn more about parenting. Each session will include guest speakers who will be covering various topics such as budgeting, baby and toddler care, health and wellbeing and family support services. It provides free information on the various support services including financial counselling, health programs, and food relief programs. Supporting Young Parents program has been made possible through a partnership with Gateway Health Wodonga, Uniting Care Wodonga, and Wodonga Council Maternal Health. Felltimber Community Centre co-ordinator Amanda Crisp said the sessions were designed to be engaging and fun while relaying useful information on the support services and facilities in the local area. “It’s a short, sharp, informative, casual and fun program for young parents who may feel isolated - as it will open doors for them,” Ms Crisp said. “While it’s difficult to draw young parents to come to programs, this program is trying to bring young parents together to build that support network and those skills to have better outcomes for them.” Young mum to four-month-old Zep-

Breanna’s simply at the top of her game WODONGA Basketball Association’s Breanna “BJ” Green was named the 2016 Youth Ambassador at the Wodonga Red Carpet Youth Awards last week where her basketball achievements were highlighted. The 16-year-old was awarded for her outstanding contributions to the community – relishing every chance to improve the local basketball world, both on and off the court. She was “overwhelmed” and “speechless” when she received the award and recognition for her efforts saying she does it because it’s “enjoyable”. “I’ve never done anything because I wanted to be seen as a good person, I just do it because I enjoy doing it,” Green said. “I want to give back and to get that was very, very overwhelming - I was amazed with it.” Green’s involvement in serving the basketball community in Wodonga was what significantly contributed towards her being named the Youth Ambassador. She is a hard worker off the court and dynamic on it, and not only does she play the game but she also coaches juniors, helps run the Aussie Hoops program and assists younger kids with extra training and guidance. She played her role in the Wodonga Lady Wolves’ successful Country Basketball League campaign - with its 61-45 win over Bendigo in the North East Conference grand final. “Winning that CBL premiership was one of my biggest achievements in basketball and my first year of playing (senior women),” she said. “I really enjoyed CBL and it was good to learn there. Green currently has a lot on her plate with basketball, coaching and Year 11 studies as she heads in to her final year of schooling in 2017. “I’m playing domestic, there’s rep training ... but I’m mostly coaching at the moment. “It (coaching) all started about four or five years ago with a domestic team – under-12 boys – and then I started doing Aussie Hoops, just helping out about four years ago.” While Green’s ticked off a great deal already along her basketball journey, she has her sights set on the sky and doesn’t want to settle for anything less than reaching the pinnacle of the sport in Victoria. “My first aim – I’d love to play WNBL, then I’d love to coach at a high level whether that’s in NBL or WNBL,” Green said.

ALBURY will be hosting an Agfest at QEII Square on Saturday 13 August to celebrate and showcase the magnificent agricultural diversity and produce the region boasts following the 2016 Australian Lamb Expo (LambEx). Shearing demonstrations, line dancing, Snowy River Pony Rides, agricultural and farming study information, fresh and preserved produce and country music are just some of the things that will be available on the day. Sandstock Working Kelpies will also be there to show their working dogs in action. Sandstock Working Kelpies co-owner Beth Sandral said she looked forward to showing her
working dogs in action and demonstrating how to train kelpie pups. “We are going to have a round yard with sheep set-up for working and a loading race so you can see the dogs putting them in and out of the trailer,” Ms Sandral said. “We will also do demonstrations on how to work the puppies.” She said her main stud dog, Chocker, and his son who is fully trained but inexperienced will be there on the day so she can demonstrate the different stages of training. “It’s fantastic to watch and really interesting to see the capabilities of these dogs,” she said. “Even for those who have seen working dogs before, they’d be amazed at ours because we’ve spent so much time and money
selecting the perfect genetics for the perfect dogs.” AlburyCity deputy mayor David Thurley said it would be a great day for families to come and see how the dogs worked and how they were trained and even pick-up tips. “Kids who live in town might not get the chance to get close to farm animals and see how welltrained working dogs are,” Mr Thurley said. “I’d encourage people to pop down and check it out as it's great get this opportunity to understand where our products, produce and dinner come from.” Wool classing, bush dancing, spinning and weaving demonstrations, country fashions, craft beers, lamb barbecue, hot food and drinks will also be available on the day.

Books to be in balance By MONIQUE KUZEFF YOUNG lawyer Adam Koster has set his sights on a seat on Wodonga Council, having recently announced his candidacy for the upcoming local government election in October. The 26-year-old, who completed a law degree at Monash University in Melbourne, would like to assist a council which applies itself to bettering its community but also one which lives within its means. As a member of the Ratepayers Association Wodonga, he said he had recognised concern in the community about rates and the level of local government debt. “We cannot divorce economic issues from social issues as they are both intrinsically linked,” Mr Koster said. “I will commit to resisting any further spending commitments, until such time as the debt is repaid and rates are kept in line with the present cap of CPI.” Youth engagement and employment, economic activity and deregulation are also matters that Mr Koster would like to engage with if he were to be elected onto council. Having managed a small restaurant in Melbourne for three years, Mr Koster said he knows “first-hand” the pressures on small businesses and the interaction they have with council. If he were elected he would seek to arrange a business advisory committee to be in conjunction with the Wodonga Chamber of Commerce. “This would be established so that the business community can advise council directly on matters most important to them,” he said. “The terms of reference for the committee would be to advise the council on deregulation, critical infrastructure needs and optimal ways to attract commercial interest and investment in Wodonga. “It’s important that we not only find ways to attract more businesses here, but also to support and encourage existing businesses.” As a property, wills and planning lawyer, Mr Koster feels he is fit for council because he has the “technical background”, referring to his “clinical” and “dispassionate” legal approach in assessing issues that may arise for council consideration. “Because of my dealings in my current role, dealing with a lot of small businesses and developers, I believe I’ve got the right background.” He said youth engagement and employment were crucial to the future of Wodonga. “If we want to see the city continue to grow, it is imperative that jobs are available for the younger population. “There is no point in talking about ‘youth engagement’, unless it can be met with real jobs.” He would also like to see a policy that would help support and foster Wodonga’s relationship with its partner city, Albury. “It is important that we market ourselves to those from outside the region in particular as Albury-Wodonga, a city of around 100,000, as opposed to Wodonga along with around 37,500 people.”

Army marches in By MONIQUE KUZEFF THE right of Freedom of Entry was exercised in Beechworth on Sunday morning as the town saw the 4/19 Prince of Wales’ Light Horse Regiment march down Williams Street over the weekend. This ceremony marked the 101st anniversary of the Battle of the Nek, during which the 8th Light Horse Regiment suffered 234 casualties with a body of 300 men. In recognition of the unique relationship between the community of Indigo Shire and the 4/19 Prince of Wales’ Light Horse Regiment, the parade was re-enacted in Beechworth. Over 100 Army personnel and the Australian Army Band from Melbourne, participated in the parade utilising in-service vehicle platforms, including the Bushmaster Protected Mobility Vehicles. The parade was led by the Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Colonel Jon Molnar and reviewed by Indigo Shire mayor James Trenery. Wodonga’s warm welcome to kids By MONIQUE KUZEFF WHEN Wodonga Council employees Courtney Bryce and Jessica Hales each had their first child, they were relieved to learn that they had the support to continue breastfeeding when they returned to work. Wodonga Council is an exemplar of a workplace that assists mothers who need to either breastfeed or express milk while at work by providing a comfortable space to which they can do so in privacy. The room is set up for those women employees to allow them to take breaks or utilise a hospital-grade breast pump to express milk. Courtney Bryce, mother of fourweek-old Archer, said the facilities that Wodonga Council provided its employees who are breastfeeding were “supportive” and “important”. “We get breastfeeding breaks which are really supportive and flexible and is open to us for breastfeeding when we return to work,” Ms Bryce said. “It takes a massive load off my mind to know that we are supported and have those breaks for breastfeeding, which is obviously really important for little Archer.” About 70 per cent of new mothers are exclusively breastfeeding when they leave hospital, according to Family, Youth and Early Years manager Marcia Armstrong. When the newborn is six months old the figure drops to 11 per cent compared to the state figure of 34 per cent. Mother of one-year-old baby Connor, Jenni Singleton, has been working at the

Ms Singleton said the Wodonga Council and the facilities it provided supported her in her decision to continue breastfeeding Connor when she returned to work. “Coming back to work, I didn’t have the stress or worry of having to have to wean Connor,” Ms Singleton said. “Particularly for new mothers to be able to access the room and have access to a hospital-grade breast pump is just amazing.” She said other women who she had spoken to regarding flexibility and sup-
port for women breastfeeding at work have told her that their workplaces aren’t as well set up. “It can be tough for businesses but it’s all part of valuing your staff and providing a caring environment and that you’ll be able to get the most out of your employees. “Families should have the choice of how they would like to feed their child and it shouldn’t negatively impact on the way they choose to feed their child. In light of World Breastfeeding Week which runs from 1 to 7 August, Wodonga Council encourages other employers to support breastfeeding in their workplace too by providing a space and flexible working conditions if possible.
Cops caught up in bloody war A BLOODY battle between New South Wales and Victoria police broke out last week, with both services going head-to-head to be named “top dog” when it comes to blood donation. Police, firies and ambos across the country have laid down more than 5000 arms to combat a shortfall in blood donors over winter, as part of the Emergency Services Blood Challenge. The Emergency Services Challenge is part of the Blood Service’s Red25 program, a unique giving program uniting with groups and organisations around Australia to save lives through blood donation. New South Wales Police are leading the spill on 500 donations, followed closely by Victorian Police on 497. Blood Service spokesperson Cathy Chapman urged people to follow the lead of emergency services, and put themselves on the line by giving blood. “We’re hoping interstate rivalry will help inspire emergency service personnel and other people from Victoria and New South Wales to donate blood,” Ms Chapman said. “If you’ve escaped the cold and flu season and are feeling 100 per cent healthy, you may be eligible to donate, “People who are battling cancer, or those injured in an emergency such as road trauma, may not see another winter without blood.” A total of 90 Albury donors were among the 500,000 blood donors across Australia honoured during National Blood Donor Week in late June for their lifesaving efforts. Every year locals help save the lives of 33,000 Aussies, including cancer patients, pregnant mums, road trauma victims, premature babies, and people with blood disorders.

Ms Chapman said despite their heroic efforts, more than 200 new donors were needed this winter, with the cold and flu season wiping out regular donors. “An estimated 9 million Australians are eligible to give blood but only 500,000 actively do so and we’re asking the remaining 8.5 million to pitch in and help their local community this winter. “Every blood donation helps to save three lives.” The Patten family from Albury was celebrated as part of the National Blood Donor Week for reaching a combined total of 400 donations and saving 1200 lives. Three people in the Patten family will be receiving Milestone Donor Awards this year, Jo has reached her 200th while her husband Trevor and daughter Alyce will both be receiving their 100th Milestone Award. Carevan’s next challenge set By MONIQUE KUZEFF OUR local Carevan Foundation hosted its first major fund-raiser of the year, The Corporate Sleepout, last Wednesday and is now challenging itself to its second major fund-raiser the “Carevan Community Challenge” to be held in September. This will go forth as the first inaugural fun run/walk fundraiser event for Carevan, which hopes to see over 200 participants to help raise a minimum of $5000 to go 100 per cent back in to the initiative. The event encompasses a choice of a 5km ($30) or 10km ($35) walk or run, with a fee of
$15 for entrants 15 years and younger. A professional sports event organiser will be hosting the event to ensure that the day runs smoothly and that all professional and non-professional participants are able to be manually timed at their attempt. Not only is this event about raising funds for a great cause and challenging yourself, but it also aims to raise social awareness of the homelessness in our community. Carevan founder John Brabant said the Carevan Community Challenge comes as a “social awareness” and “inclusion” fund-raiser to help
prompt “social change”.
