Granny saddling up to ride in Rio Oldest Aussie in fifth games By LUKE VOOGT Geelong and the Bellarine Peninsula will field seven athletes at the Rio 2016 Olympics, beginning tomorrow (Saturday). Three will make their Olympic debut but Drysdale grandmother and equestrian champion Mary Hanna - the Australian team’s oldest member - will compete in her fifth games. The 61-year-old will be the equal-second Olympian to reach the five-games milestone. Hanna and horse Boogie Woogie were in fantastic spirits, she told the Indy over the phone from Rio. “It’s very exciting when you’ve got the right horses and everything falls into place,” she said. “The stables are brilliant and the transport systems here are great.” Hannah said she was already planning ahead for Tokyo 2020. “It (Rio) isn’t the end of my goals. “(Boogie Woogie) shouldn’t get to his peak until Tokyo and then I’ve got another young one up and coming.” Hanna will become Australia’s oldest ever Olympic equestrian, eclipsing Bill Roycroft’s record. She will be 125 days older than Roycroft was when he represented Australia at the 1976 Olympics. “I try not to think about the age so much,” she said. “I focus on my sport and staying fit and healthy so I can do it as long as possible.” Drysdale will also watch the progress of high jumper Joel Baden, who grew up in the town. The 20-year-old will make his Olympic debut after clearing the automatic qualifying height of 2.29m in Cairns on 26 June. Perseverance paid off for Baden, who had jumps of 2.25m and 2.24m this year but failed to clear 2.29m until days before the end of qualifying. Continued page 4

‘Citizens’ jury’ to review direct election of mayor By LUKE VOOGT A Citizen’s Jury could recommend that Geelong residents lose their mayoral vote, according to newDemocracy Foundation executive director Iain Walker. He refused to rule out the possibility on Wednesday during a stakeholder meeting on how the jury would review Geelong’s council structure. “If that’s what the jury recommends, there’s no editing,” he told the Indy. The Andrews government last month appointed the newDemocracy Foundation to establish a jury of 100 residents to consider ward and councillor numbers and how to elect the mayor. “We’re going to ask people a fairly straight-
forward question - how do you want to be represented?” Mr Walker said. “We’re not showing people a solution. Directly elected mayor, not directly elected mayor, I don’t have a view.” Former Geelong councillor Ron Nelson questioned the need for the $221,750 jury. The Victorian Electoral Committee (VEC) had already reviewed council’s structure with public consultations at a cost of $500,000, he said. Mr Walker said the jury represented a move from public opinion to “public judgement”. The time allowed for deliberations would provide for informed decisions rather than reflex answers to phone poll questions at dinner time, he said. “If 100 people could find some common
ground, having read this, having interrogated it, would you trust them?” The jury would spend a month pre-reading and three full Saturdays of considerations in November, Mr Walker said. Former Labor Lara MP Peter Loney attacked the jury at the meeting, saying any major changes to council structure should require a referendum. But Mr Walker called referendums “horrendous tools”. “Everyone complains about how we do democracy and this is a new approach. “A lot of the time people think government is something done to them, not for them or by them. “I’d say to people pick a horse - if you want business as usual then we’re the wrong option.”
Crash kills mum A Surf Coast mother has died after a head-on car crash at Bellbrae yesterday morning. “The woman was the front passenger of a Volkswagen Polo car travelling on Anglesea Road near the Great Ocean Road intersection,” Victoria Police said. “It is believed a Holden Commodore travelling on the opposite side of the road collided with the passenger’s car about 9.20am. “Police were called to the scene and the woman was flown to hospital with life-threatening injuries. “The woman died in hospital yesterday evening. “The drivers of both cars involved in the collision were also transported to hospital with injuries.” The Geelong Indy understands that the woman was a Surf Coast resident and a mother. Police urged anyone who might have witnessed the collision to phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Victoria’s road toll for 2016 stands at 177 compared to 150 at the same time last year.

Race upgrade Geelong’s Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race has secured a place on the coveted UCI World Tour racing calendar, organisers have announced. The upgrade of the 174km men’s one-day classic secured a three-year licence from world cycling’s governing body, ranking the event alongside the Tour de France.
Ship rescue CFA members have used a platform ladder to help paramedics reach an ill crew member aboard a ship docked in Geelong. Firefighters deployed the ladder at Lascelles Wharf at noon on Wednesday after receiving a report that a man in his 60s required medical attention.
Drug bust A raid has netted cannabis plants worth $500,000 in a house at Clifton Springs, according to police. The haul of 200 plants from the Kalimna Court residence was an “excellent result”, said Bellarine police Senior Sergeant Shane Madigan.
Cricket win More than 200 players will compete in a National Cricket Inclusion Championships in Geelong for the next three years, according to the sport’s Australian body. Four-hundred people sailed last week, 223 on Thursday and 320 were booked for today’s (Friday) trip, said Bellarine Ferry Group’s John Rae. “We were absolutely delighted with the response,” he said. “It just highlights the demand in the area.” St Leonards’ Jim Treadwell, 71, said he enjoyed his Thursday trip to Docklands. The ferry was relaxed compared to his regular drives to Melbourne, he said. “We’ve made it to Melbourne and I haven’t yelled at one car driver on the way up. “I’d probably add three years onto my life if this became a regular thing.” Mr Treadwell said the $25 fare was good value.

Mums kept abreast of best for bubs By LUKE VOOGT A group of Geelong mums and their babes celebrated World Breastfeeding Week at Western Heights Uniting Church yesterday (Thursday). Australian Breastfeeding Association (ABA) Geelong group leader Kate Heffer encouraged new local mums to check out the group. “It’s all about giving them confidence in their breastfeeding,” she said.
“This is a place where you can find other mums who just trying to do the best for their kids - we’re a very supportive group.” The group discussed how local venues could be “breastfeeding friendly” and measures that would make local mums feel freer to feed their babies, Ms Heffer said. The group will host a family picnic at Johnstone Park from noon on Sunday.
Late-night buses between Geelong and Melbourne will continue until next June at least after the State Government announced a six-month extension this week. Public Transport Users Association Geelong branch spokesman Paul Westcott said trains would be preferred but buses were “better than nothing”.
Boats stolen A spate of boat thefts has extended to southern Geelong, with thieves breaking into residential properties at Belmont and Highton. Police posted images of two stolen boats on social media this week following a series of appeals for help with thefts across the Bellarine Peninsula in recent weeks.

Then again, Geelong’s always been besotted with its local footy hero of the day. Double Take can even remember back to the ‘90s when elements of the Kennett government were keen to preselect Billy Brownless in the extremely safe state Labor seat of Lara, or Corio as it was known at the time. A loveable larrikin on the field, Billy was previously unknown in political circles, so a team from the Indy decided to survey voters on the likelihood of a Brownless victory. The verdict of 100 respondents at Corio Shopping Centre was emphatic: 95 per cent support for a Liberal Billy over Labor incumbent Peter Loney, or any other challenger for that matter. One older couple summed up the celebrity effect when the male of the pair said he’d vote for Brownless as a Liberal candidate. “But you’ve always voted Labor,” said his wife, elbowing him in the side. “I know,” he agreed, wincing, “but it’s Billy!”

Turnbull’s team ‘must GROW jobs’ By LUKE VOOGT Jobseekers in the region's most-disadvantaged suburbs could be losers from last month's federal election, a lobby group has warned. G21 wants the Turnbull Government to fund a program finding work for unemployed people in suburbs like Corio and Norlane after it missed out on Labor's pre-election commitment of $2 million. G21 Regional Opportunities to Work (GROW) deserved bipartisan support, said G21's chief executive officer, Elaine Carbines. “Addressing disadvantage is everybody’s busi-
ness and should be beyond politics,” she said. “This (the election result) will mean it will take us longer to achieve the goal of breaking that cycle of disadvantage in our most disadvantaged suburbs.” Ms Carbines said G21, an alliance body representing the region's five municipalities, would now work with Liberal Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson to secure other federal funding. “Now we’ve got to work with opportunities that the coalition is affording us. We do need her support to get a commitment out of the Turnbull Government.” Ms Carbines said GROW targeted areas with the region's highest unemployment rates, particu-
larly Corio, Norlane, Whittington and Colac. The program encouraged businesses to source supplies locally and to consider jobseekers from the targeted suburbs, she said. “It’s a very innovative approach - we’re the only place in Australia that's doing it this way. “If we can just shift seven per cent of the procurement practices in favour of local suppliers by 2020 that would create 2500 jobs and contribute $1 billion to the G21 region.” Ms Henderson suggested GROW could tap into a $96 million Try, Test and Learn Fund for innovative policies to help people find jobs. “I'm extremely supportive of GROW and look forward to advocating very hard for Try, Test and
Cancer centre says ‘here’s cheers’ to a very dry July Almost 200 Geelong residents who spent a sober Dry July raised more than $62,000 for Geelong’s Andrew Love Cancer Centre. The money will go to #projectlove for the redevelopment of the centre’s Chemotherapy Day Ward to improve patient comfort and privacy. Barwon Health Foundation fundraising committee chairwoman Teresa Hanlon said Dry July was a great way to support the centre while promoting good health. “I’d encourage people to get on board next year,” she said. Bendigo Bank chief Mike Hurst was again the number one Dry July fundraiser in Geelong, contributing about $12,500. Lessons learned from kayak spill Failure to consider weather conditions led to the rescue of eight secondary students in a kayaking incident off the Surf Coast in May, authorities have found. Transport Safety Victoria’s David Hourigan said the students were lucky to survive. “The only things lost were four double kayaks and eight paddles but it could have been much worse,” he said. Marine Safety Victoria released a report on the incident, finding that organisers failed to heed warnings of strong wind and high seas. Luckily off-duty surf lifesavers were at the beach when the students lost control of the kayaks, Mr Hourigan said. “I commend the life savers for their quick thinking ... that led to a very good outcome from what was potentially the very opposite.” Maritime Safety’s Peter Corcoran said the authority would assist the Education and Training Department with a review of its aquatic activity guidelines.

‘Urgent’ safety work on city bypass “Urgent” work is underway to repair dangerous potholes on Geelong’s bypass will begin, VicRoads has announced. The work on Melbourne-bound lanes between the Moorabool River bridge and Midland Highway overpass would “ensure the safety of the travelling public”, VicRoads’ Mark Koliba said. Recent wet weather has led to an outbreak of
potholes and other damage on busy local roads, with motorists expressing concerns about safety and vehicle damage. Motorists should expect speed restrictions and traffic delays during lane closures to complete the work safely, Mr Koliba said. The works began Monday and will continue from 9am to 3pm weekdays, with VicRoads expecting completion in two weeks.

A Geelong app helping a deaf teen work as a diesel mechanic has won a national award. Nineteen-year-old Chris Linahan communicated only through AUSLAN sign language when job services agency MatchWorks began trying to fit him into his dream career working on diesel engines. The agency placed Chris with FUSO Geelong, where boss Richard Furnari trained staff in AUSLAN and modified the dealership to accommodate him. But Chris’s career breakthrough emerged when Mr Furnari launched eCheck, an app helping Chris communicate with clients as well as drive and test trucks. He now has an apprenticeship at the Geelong dealership. “We developed the software ourselves and we’re rolling it out to fleet companies, other local workshops and also to the Victorian Government to service their front-line fire-response units, in-
A peak business body has rubbished a report warning that 28 Geelong construction companies “are heading toward financial failure”. “It’s an incredibly emotive headline that gives a false impression of what’s happening here,” said Geelong Chamber of Commerce’s Bernadette Uzelac. “It really flies in the face of what we’re seeing in businesses here on the ground.” SV Partners’ August 2016 Commercial Risk Outlook Report claimed that Geelong had 28 “high-risk construction companies” among 1135 in the city. But a spokesperson for the insolvency firm later clarified for the Indy that the figure included tradies, subcontractors and sole operators. Ms Uzelac said the report was misleading because it implied that major local construction companies were in financial strife. “I’d take this with a grain of salt.” Builders had many opportunities in Geelong with projects such as Workcover and NDIA headquarters and Armstrong Creek developments, Ms Uzelac said.
The report said a further 131 Geelong businesses were highly likely to face financial failure within the next 12 months. The report was based on more than 20 million financial records relating to Australia’s 2.39 million operating businesses, including trade payment histories. SV Partners Victoria executive director Michael Carrafa called the results unsurprising given the challenges confronting the construction industry in recent years. “Construction businesses represent more than six per cent of operating businesses across Geelong,” he said. “That fact, combined with the recent softening of the construction industry, has seen the sector represent the highest number of high-risk businesses in the region. The industry will, however, receive some much-needed relief once the construction of the new headquarters for the government’s new National Disability Insurance Scheme, DisabilityCare, commences.” Mr Carrafa said cash-flow problems and inadequate strategic management were key causes for businesses hitting financial trouble.

Doubt on boozer violence actions By Victoria Stone-Meadows New research has cast doubt over the effectiveness of anti-violence initiatives in central Geelong, according to a Geelong professor. Peter Miller said preliminary results from his nine-year study indicated that measures such as ID scanners, banned-patron lists, live CCTV monitoring and inter-venue communications failed to significantly affect drunken assaults around nightclubs. Central Geelong venues introduced the measures in 2007 following a public outcry over alcohol-fuelled violence in the wake of a brutal sex assault in central Geelong. Last week’s Indy reported that those involved in the Geelong initiatives believed they had been a success. Prof Miller said his work at Deakin University was part of a nationwide review of initiatives to combat alcohol-related violence. Among the issues considered in the research was an assessment of assault rates, alcohol-related hospital and ambulance attendances, patron interviews, and observations inside venues. Early results indicated that some of the initiatives introduced in Geelong might be less effective than they seemed, Prof Miller said. “Everything we’ve seen is that they’re better than not having anything but they don’t make a statistically significant difference in alcohol-related violence. “These measures might be preventing a small incident escalating to a big incident but teasing
this out in official stats doesn’t come out as you would hope.” Prof Miller said Geelong venues were unable to influence many factors contributing to alcohol-related violence, such as unemployment and population sizes. One of the major alcohol-related changes in Geelong nightlife was the rate of patrons drinking before going out, he said. “In 2008, we recorded pre-drinking rates at 65 per cent of patrons in Geelong. “Then we conducted the survey again in 2011 and over 80 per cent said they had pre-drunk and now it’s almost 100 per cent.” Prof Miller linked increasing rates of predrinking to higher prices for nightclub drinks. “People are arriving in the night-time economy drunker than ever before because booze at Dan Murphy’s is cheaper than water in a pub.” Prof Miller called Geelong’s initiatives a good start but wanted the State Government to take more action. “We know what to do to reduce alcohol violence but it has to come from a State Government level.” Reducing the number of licensed venues, restricting trading hours and preventing drunks using public transport to travel between cities could also reduce alcohol-related assault rates, Prof Miller said. “But that’s up to State Government, which has shown no interest in ending alcohol-related violence.”

Mechanical problems, visa knockbacks and roadblocks have failed to stop Barwon Heads’ Myles Benham from taking on one the world’s great continental car trips: the Mongol Rally. Myles and his German friends David and Maja made it to Turkey this week, after travelling through Austria, Slovenia and the Balkans. “My friends and I just wanted to do something different,” Myles said. “We had the time for a larger trip and none of us knew anything about Central Asia.” “The opportunity of going to places like Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Mongolia and Kyrgyzstan, which are not normal travel destinations, was something that we found very exciting.” Yet “Team Pineapple” ran into mechanical problems before even embarking on the journey. The group found an old Mazda Demio on eBay in Germany, which they affectionately dubbed the “pineapple express”. “The first mechanic who looked at it, told us we got a bargain and that it would only cost a small amount to fix it up,” Myles said. But weeks before departure the Pineapple Express had some major problems, forcing the group to ditch the car at the last minute. “Luckily Maja had an old Citroen collecting dust,” Myles said. “So after some convincing and pleading to her parents we were allowed to drive it to Mongolia.” The group was also meant to have a fourth member: Maja’s Syrian friend Ekim. Unfortunately Ekim was unable to get all the
required visas and had to pull out. But the remaining trio has loved the trip regardless. “Besides a roadblock in the mountains of Montenegro due to a small landslide, everything has been smooth sailing,” Myles said. “Currently we are travelling through Turkey which we were all a little wary about when the trip started, but since we have arrived we have only had amazing experiences. The real problems will likely occur once we get a little more remote and a little further away from civilization, but fingers crossed everything holds up.” Myles’ most memorable moment so far was jumping 24m from Stari Most Bridge in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The 16th Century Ottoman bridge was reconstructed after being destroyed during the Croat-Bosniak War. “Making the plunge into the icy water below was absolutely insane,” Myles said. Myles said the group had met some incredible people travelling through nine countries so far. “A Turkish family hosted us for two nights in Bursa and showed us around, which was a great experience for all of us.” An elderly Montenegrin couple allowed the group to camp in their spare paddock, overlooking the mountains, while a Herzegovinian invited them to a secret garden party on an island near his village. The group is raising money for two environmental charities: CoolEarth and Tusk.org CoolEarth works to stop deforestation while Tusk.org protects Africa’s wildlife. ‘$25m shortfall’ in plans to fix Great Ocean Road “Astonishing” inaction has left the Great Ocean Road $25 million short for vital upgrades, according to a federal MP. The Andrews Government must deliver the funding to match Canberra’s $56 million for local road improvements, said Member for Corangamite Sarah Henderson. “It’s astonishing that we have not yet seen any commitment from State Labor to one of the nation’s most significant tourist roads, the iconic Great Ocean Road, the centrepiece of our $2 billion regional tourism economy,” she said. “This is in contrast to the previous Liberal State Government’s decision to match the $25 million the Coalition committed to the Great Ocean Road prior to the 2013 federal election.” Ms Henderson said Victoria must also provide $20 million for the Princes Highway west of Colac, $5 million for the Hamilton Highway between Geelong and Cressy and $300,000 each to duplicate Ocean Grove’s Grubb Road and the Midland Highway to Bannockburn. “Why is Daniel Andrews refusing to fund these priority road upgrades which, after all, are the responsibility of his government? Once again we see State Labor turning its back on the infrastructure needs of regional Victoria.” In response, Victorian Roads Minister Luke Donnellan called Ms Henderson “all song and no dance”. “The Turnbull Government is letting down all Victorians by only providing nine per cent of national infrastructure spending even though we represent 25 per cent of the population. This is simply not good enough,” Mr Donnellan said. “Ms Henderson should be lobbying Malcolm Turnbull for Victoria to get its fair share.” The Andrews Government said its latest budget included $260 million to “reduce travel times and improve efficiency” on regional roads and a

further $130 million for repairs and resurfacing. The government would also spend $340 million on accident black spots in regional Victoria.
“We’ve also invested $106.7 million for the construction of the Drysdale Bypass on the Bellarine Peninsula,” the government said.
Wait time critical By Luke Voogt Ambulance response times have improved in Geelong under Labor, according to the Andrews Government. Acting Ambulance Services Minister James Merlino said latest figures showed significant improvement since Labor assumed office in 2014. “The figures couldn’t be clearer. The Andrews Labor government’s commitment to improving our ambulance service means a safer and quicker response for local patients,” Mr Merlino said. The Ambulance Service figures showed that average Geelong response times to reach Code 1 emergencies, for incidents requiring lights and sirens, was 13.18 minutes in 2015/2016 compared to 13.26 the previous year. ACTING: James Merlino. But Mr Merlino highlighted figures for the final year of the previous coalition government when Code 1 response times were 14.30 minutes in 2013/2014. Over the first two years under Labor the proportion of ambulances arriving within 15 minutes for the most time-critical incidents, including heart attacks, major trauma and strokes, improved from 67.1 per cent to 73. But coalition MP Simon Ramsay questioned “the Andrew Government’s euphoria” over ambulance times, saying state-wide figures indicated a deterioration over the last quarter. Urban Geelong had recorded a small improvement but response times in rural areas and growth corridors had “blown out” from the last reporting period, he said. “The Andrews Government has also only used Code 1 response times which they have prioritised at the expense of the Code 2 responses.” Mr Ramsay accused Daniel Andrews of breaking an election commitment to reduce ambulance waiting times.

$350m centre’s car park ‘focus’

Wet July also warmer than average UNDER THE WEATHER Lindsay Smail Well-above average rain drenched the entire Geelong region in July. The urban area had around 86mm for the month, almost double the latest 30-year average. The region’s highest total for July was at Mt Sabine, in the Otway catchment, with a staggering 358.2mm. The region’s lowest total for the month was Leopold with 67mm, although it was still above average. Some minor flash flooding occurred on 13 and 14 July despite the sixth day of the month recording the highest 24-hour total, 19mm. Consequently, the region’s water catchments have continued filling to stand at 49 per cent of capacity at the end of the month. Believe it or not, Geelong’s average daily temperature for July was around 0.9 degrees Celsius
higher than the latest 30-year normal. The month’s average daily minimum was 7.1 degrees Celsius, compared to the 30-year figure of 5.7 degrees Celsius. Maximums averaged 14.4 degrees Celsius, compared to 14 degrees Celsius. The coldest minimum overnight was 0.2 degrees Celsius on 17 July, which was the only frost event for the month. The warmest night was on 19 July with 12.1. On the coldest day, 26 July, the temperature rose only to 10.8 degrees Celsius - but on the mildest day, the 18th, it hit 19.4 degrees Celsius. July had six very windy days. The 12th included a maximum gust of 100km/h at Breakwater, with 113km/h measured at Point Wilson. Other strong gusts the same day included Avalon’s 95km/h and Queen’s Park’s 93km/h. Snow fell in the Lorne, Lavers Hill and Beech Forest areas on 13 July, which also recorded some severe storm damage to house roofs and trees in Geelong.
Deakin University’s waterfront car park will be the “focus” of a business study for a 1000-seat Geelong convention centre, according to the State Government. The announcement confirmed the car park as the convention centre site after the Indy last month revealed confusion about local leadership of the project. MPs had been calling since last year for an arrangement to acquire the car park but Deakin told the Indy in June it had yet to see any plans for the convention centre. The Deakin revelation exposed a lack of leadership on the centre, with local business and government groups unable to identify a project leader. The project was thrown further into confusion earlier this month after a media report that Deakin had lodged plans to build student accommodation on the site. Deakin said the report was wrong and that the accommodation project was announced in April for a separate car park on Brougham Street. The government said today it would spend $1 million on the business plan to build a convention centre worth $350 million on the waterfront car park. “Previous work” indicated the facility would be worth $50 million annually to Geelong’s economy and create 270 ongoing jobs as well as 600 during construction, the government said. The centre would include a 3000 square metre exhibition space, a business centre and shops. The centre was part of Labor’s “10-year agenda to renew central Geelong”, the government said. “People have long talked about a convention centre for Geelong. The time for talk is over,” Premier Daniel Andrews said.
“We’re getting the crucially needed planning and business case done, so we can consider it ahead of the next budget.” Geelong MP Christine Couzens said the convention centre would help “renew the CBD, strengthen tourism and create crucial jobs”. However, the government might have to come up with a car parking trade to acquire the waterfront land. The convention centre plan would have to satisfy Deakin “principles” governing development of its waterfront landholdings, the university said. The principles included finding “solutions for our existing student car parking”. “Our car park sits at the centre of the natural waterfront beauty and the governing council of the university has established principles that would govern any development of this significant asset,” the university said. Vice-chancellor Professor Jane den Hollander said Deakin’s “partnership” with the government would include development of a master plan for the university’s waterfront precinct. “We are committed to supporting the communities we serve and are delighted to work with the Victorian Government to create a strong vision for the future of Geelong’s waterfront, along the lines of Brisbane’s Southbank, the Gold Coast’s Parklands, and the re-invigoration of the Townsville Esplanade,” Prof den Hollander said. “What we have that most other Australian regions don’t is a north-facing bay; a stunning natural landmark that is the perfect base for our city to become one of the country’s most thriving community and tourist attractions.”

Letters Short-sited on convention centre Given cost-effective Geelong convention centre alternatives, it would be poor form, irrespective of incentives, for Deakin University to forfeit prime waterfront real estate expansion opportunities. We live in and benefit from a university town underpinned by tiered educational excellence. The smart cities brand, embraced by advocacy groups that have pushed to varying degrees for what will prove to more than likely stymie future university expansion, remains a dime a dozen. Now the Andrews Government has allocated $1 million for the business case ahead of a $100 million build - taxpayer monies that could be more judiciously spent while still lifting the city’s stocks. Sensible state governance and attuned local advocacy from G21, Committee for Geelong and Geelong Chamber of Commerce, rather than dudding future university options, should have opted for due diligence and selection of the best option from the alternative sites: a privately funded Yarra Street Pier; a Mercure Hotel/stage five Skilled Stadium combo; or to the north of the Osborne House precinct. Nervous wait on fracking During 2015 the Andrews Government’s Parliamentary Inquiry into Unconventional Gas determined that gas mining, also known as fracking, posed a significant danger to Victoria’s well-established rural industries, environment, the health of communities and water supplies if allowed to proceed unregulated. Prior to announcing the government’s decision on the report’s recommendations, the then Minister for Resources, Lily D’Ambrosio, was shuffled out of her portfolio. The new minister, Wade Noonan, is now priming himself for the announcement. Many people in the broader Victorian community are concerned that the delays we are witnessing indicate that the government will not provide a total ban on gas mining, as many reports indicate it should, but will kowtow to the mining industry’s demands for access to the state’s gas resources. The people in the affected communities will not permit the unconventional gas mining industry to enter their communities unopposed because the well-documented risks to rural jobs, community welfare, health and the environment from this industry are too significant a threat to Victoria’s pristine environment and to those who produce Victoria’s food. I am sorry to write again so soon but I can’t let go by Alan Barron’s claim that “people don’t understand the role CO2 plays in the atmosphere” (Letters 29 July). He claimed that “CO2 is not some sort of thermal blanket, it’s a regulator of heat, shielding the Earth from the Sun’s powerful rays”. Here’s the way it actually works: CO2 only interacts with a section of the infrared part in sunlight but most incoming sunlight energy is in the range where CO2 has no effect, so all of it gets in. Most of this energy is then absorbed by things like plants and oceans. The absorbed energy causes the surface to warm up and, just as any warm body emits infrared, so does Earth. But now the outgoing infrared is in the CO2 interaction range and some is reflected back down again rather than going back to space. So the more CO2, the more heat radiation and the surface temperature goes up in response. This is what a blanket does and the basic physics has been understood since the 1800s. So while I might agree with Mr Barron’s first assertion, I do not think he is the right person to educate people on CO2 science. Jukka Tuisku Barwon Heads

The Sun and the cycle
Jukka Tuisku is back (Letters, 29 July), denigrating those who don’t share his belief in catastrophic anthropogenic global warming and imagining what we’re thinking. For example: “Tim Saclier is convinced global warming is a hoax“. Not so. We had a rise of .6C last century and none since. Whether human-induced CO2 caused it is the point of this debate. Mr Tuisku also wrote: “To prove it he invited readers to Google ’the 97 per cent consensus myth’ … funnelling readers to conspiracy websites”. Well, we need websites to champion good science and expose pseudo-science. I avoided specifying a particular website because rational people can make their own choices from Google’s array but an in-depth 47-page study of how the ‘97 per cent consensus’ scams were concocted is published in Friends of Science. It’s an attractive site and one of many showing that climate is more complex than an atmospheric trace gas. But Mr Tuisku prefers to cling to an 1800s hypothesis about the greenhouse effect that science is failing to validate. Ironically, pioneers of greenhouse gas science looked forward to the extra warmth to feed the world and to ward off the next ice age. Conventional climate science, in promoting catastrophic anthropogenic global warming, is so politicised that disaster is a selling point. As HL Mencken wrote: “The aim of practical politics is to keep the public alarmed, and hence clamorous to be led to safety, by menacing it with
True science demands scepticism and challenge. But global warming science actively shuts down any debate or challenge to its holy doctrine. Last week Jukka Tiusku asked: “How can the decades of climate science and mounting evidence, not to mention the basic physics going back to the 1800s, be so wrong?” It was a nothing statement designed to appeal to emotion and avoid rebutting specific claims by sceptics. Sceptics want debate and open discussion but it’s always denied as warmists play the man, not the ball. It’s simple to show that global temperature’s increase started around 1800 after the last Little Ice Age was ending and well before CO2 could have had any effect. It is variations in the Sun’s ability to heat the oceans that governs the Earth’s climate, not puny CO2. The Sun heats the oceans, causing atmospheric temperatures to rise and glaciers to recede. Henry’s Law tells us that a warming ocean will release CO2 into the atmosphere. Deforestation and burning fossil fuels also contribute. The IPCC stated that CO2 could have had a significant effect on global temperatures only since 1950 but, ironically, most of the warming since 1800 was between 1910 and 1945. All indications are that we have reached the top of a warming cycle, which last peaked around 1200. It’s all just part of the natural process. Peter Rees Bell Park
Dissembling dismantling Malcolm Turnbull denied any wrongdoing on Medicare but, if memory serves me correctly, a few months before the election his government changed by stealth two vital pieces of procedure under Medicare, one relating to pap tests and the other the osteoporosis tests. Particularly the pap test will affect elderly and vulnerable pensioners in more ways than one. This is not selling Medicare but is certainly dismantling it bit by bit. Poor ratings standard A lot of media attention focused on how Australia’s credit rating could be downgraded by Standard and Poors, but what does this really mean? In 2008, days before Lehmann Brothers collapsed, it had an A rating from Standard and Poors! In the US the three rating agencies were nicknamed ‘The Three Monkeys’ during the GFC because of their see-no-evil, hear-no-evil, speak-noevil approach, which contributed to the GFC by giving ratings for fees. Over here 13 New South Wales councils sued them for their AAA rating of dodgy investments in which the councils lost money. Rockin’ out Cool classics By Luke Voogt Australian rock legend Ross Wilson will appear at the Sphinx on 13 August, playing the Daddy Cool classics which made him famous. With a career spanning more than 50 years, and no signs of slowing, “Mr Eagle Rock” is one of Australian rock’s most enduring talents. Wilson spoke to the Indy this week, after a weekend in NSW playing at gigs in Sydney, Bathurst and Newcastle. He’s no stranger to playing in Geelong. “I love it! Geelong’s really kicking on, they’ve (withstood) the close of manufacture and it’s a really nice place,” he said. Twice inducted in to the ARIA Hall of Fame (1989 solo and 2006 with Daddy Cool), Wilson continues to perform around Australia at major gigs. But despite his fame, he still loves an “up-close and personal” gig at a local pub. “It’s the breeding ground. Playing to a few hundred people – I just love that and I always have,” he said. “Every time you perform you’ve got to deliver.” From Daddy Cool to Mondo Rock, as a solo artist, or as songwriter of classics like Eagle Rock and A Touch of Paradise, Wilson’s success has continued unabated. He fronted Daddy Cool and exploded out of the 70s playing rootsy 50s sounds. Wilson then formed Mondo Rock who surfed the contemporary scene with chart topping singles and albums from the mid 70s to the late 80s. He also worked as producer for the legendary Skyhooks, Jo Jo Zep, The Johnnys, and more recently The Screaming Jets. His success as a songwriter continued during the 90s and beyond with songs for artists as diverse as Jimmy Barnes, John Farnham, Lee

Kernaghan and even The Wiggles. “I’m one of the fortunate people in the music business,” he said. “I’ve always been a full-on muso or producer, so I’ve never had to do anything else.” Lately, he’s set out to re-establish his Melbourne identity playing gigs at venues like Watsonia RSL and Hotel 520, in Tarneit. “For some reason, people don’t know where I
live – they think I’m from Sydney not Melbourne,” he said. “I think I’ve successfully convinced people that I’m a Melburnite again.” After recently creating a “power funk” remake of Johny O’Keefe’s Real Wild Child, he said another album was not far away. “I’ve got a whole new bunch of songs that I want to put on an album.”
Sound sensation ‘Human sound-effects machine’ Michael Winslow will bring his amazing impersonations and ‘10,000 voices’ to Geelong next Thursday. The former Police Academy star will be at the Gateway Hotel on 11 August as part of his Australian tour, the most extensive here to date according to promoters. The master of voices was last in Australia for the Melbourne International Comedy Festival in 2014, which saw him sell-out all nine Yarraville Club performances. Winslow’s mastery of sounds first came to prominence on the LARVELL: Michael stand-up circuit in the Winslow in Police Academy. early ’80s. The vocal gymnast did voiceovers for both Disney and Universal Studios for films like Back to the Future and Terminator. His performance as Sgt Larvelle “Motor Mouth” Jones in the Police Academy movie series – a role created especially for his vocal talents – saw Winslow become a household name. Notably, his is the only character to appear in all instalments of Police Academy including all seven movies, the cartoon and the television series. He appeared in Mel Brooks’ Spaceballs and Gremlins, amazing audiences with his ability to create the sounds of machine-gun fire, helicopters, a harmonica, and police sirens – with nothing more than his voice. Recently, Winslow voiced himself in animated form on The Simpsons and Family Guy, and his talents have appeared on countless video games and apps. His renditions of rock gods like Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin, as well as a re-enactment of a Star Wars battle scene, make Winslow’s show an earopening performance. Tickets available from Moshtix.

FINALLY FRIDAY Local volunteers give airshow wings About 800 volunteers are needed to keep Avalon’s airshow flying, according to its chief. Ian Honnery called for volunteers to begin registering for the event at Avalon Airport from 28 February to 5 March. “Without them there would be no show,” he said. Applicants had to be at least 18 and willing to undertake “a wide range of important duties” from aircraft operations to supervising car parks. The trade-off would be “ultimate access to the event and an opportunity to play an important part in its success,” Mr Honnery said. Next year’s event would run under the theme Air Power in Action, with an emphasis on military aircraft, he revealed. “There will be jet fighters from home and abroad, bombers, heavy-lift aircraft and a large range of military helicopters.” Registrations to volunteer at the not-for-profit event are open at airshow.com.au.

Children’s foot and leg concerns There are some common observations and issues related to children’s feet and legs that parents are often concerned about. Musculoskeletal podiatrist Dr David Kavanagh from Foot & Leg Pain Clinics in Belmont, clarified some of these issues. Flat feet Contrary to popular belief the appearance of flat feet in children, is not usually cause for concern. However, if there is associated pain, balance issues or excessive rolling inward of the ankles, parents should seek professional assistance. Pigeon toe and out toe The appearance of in-toeing (‘pigeon toed’) or
out-toeing (‘duck feet’), can affect the capacity of a child to run, jump and balance well. These issues may be assisted during a child’s developmental years and should be checked. Growing pains Growing pains are very common and are often due to overstrain of the growth plates of growing bones. The exact nature of the pain should be determined as soon as possible, and should be checked by a musculoskeletal podiatrist. Shin pain Medial tibial stress syndrome, anterior leg pain and compartment syndrome, all commonly
referred to as shin pain or shin splints should always be checked. “If your child regularly complains of foot or leg pain, has balance or mobility issues you should get it checked by a podiatrist experienced in treating musculoskeletal issues. Cafe’s old friends An exciting new program for older people will commence on Pako this month. The Geelong West Neighbourhood House has joined forces with Gateway Support Services to create Cafe Care Connect – a place where the elderly and their carers can go to socialise. The program is in the form of a cafe-style support group where older people and their carers can have a cuppa, cake and meet people in similar situations. Neighbourhood House president Pam Virgona has been working alongside program co-ordinators Stella Groves and Chris McGrath to revamp last year’s take on the program. “It’s in its second year, but it has a new name, change of day and change of venue,” Pam says. “It’s a program for carers and the person they’re caring for.” Program co-ordinator Stella says the intention of Cafe Care Connect is to “give support, to have a good time and to meet people in similar situations”. Stella has been involved in district nursing and
community development in Geelong for many years. Chris, on the other hand, has wide experience in mental health and aged care and especially enjoys working in community-based programs. Stella says dementia in the local community is an “increasing problem”, but the trick is “knowing how to target it early”. “This service is to prevent situations from deteriorating,” Stella says. “When you’re in an institution, things come to you. But when you’re in the community experiencing early onset symptoms of dementia, you may not be sure what’s going on,” Pam adds. Those who know of a carer or older person in the community are encouraged to phone Chris or Stella at Geelong West Neighbourhood House on 0422 394 630. A brief assessment will then be carried out by Gateway Support Services. Cafe Care Connect is open from 1pm to 3pm on Tuesday afternoons at 89 Autumn Street, Geelong West.

Sometimes ears get itchy and people can be tempted to pick up the cotton bud to give them a good scratch. Well, stop right there. Mardi, an ear nurse from Crystal Clear Ears, Geelong, says that ears are lined with sensitive, thin skin, and quietly go about gathering earwax. If anyone puts anything smaller than their elbow in their ear, such as a cotton bud, they are likely to push the whole lot further in or accidently scratch their ear. Ears have wax for a reason – it helps protect ears from infection. Some people have a natural problem with wax build up which is an hereditary problem, not a sign that the ear is being left uncleaned. Ears are designed to naturally push out the wax but that doesn’t happen for some people. Hearing aids, ear plugs or using ear buds for music prevent the wax from coming out naturally. Mardi said it is amazing how often she sees people who don’t even realise they have a blocked ear. The care is there For Belmont Grange’s Leon Derby, aged care should go “beyond the normal walks and bingo”. “I think the thing that sets us apart is the lifestyle program that we offer here,” he said. Leon is the administrative officer at the home, one of three that are run by Homestyle Aged Care in Geelong. One of the unique programs Belmont Grange offers is an intergenerational playgroup with youngsters from Geelong kindergartens. “That’s a real hit at the moment,” Leon said. Earlier this year, the residents co-authored a book with award-winning author Lee Fox and youngsters from Breakwater Kindergarten. The home is also starting pilot program next month called Music for the Mind which involves designing specific music playlists for each resident. “The playlists include songs that they’re famil-
iar with from a major life event – like wedding, anniversary and birthday. “It’s designed to invoke memories of the past.” The staff will examine the resident’s cultural assessment to make the playlist, as well as consulting with them and their family. He said ABC’s Catalyst explored the benefits of familiar music for the elderly. “It’s amazing to see the transformation someone can have just listening to the music they’re familiar with from 50 to 60 years ago,” he said. For Leon the best part of the job is making residents happy. “They come here a bit concerned about what their future might hold. “Then they make some new friends and get involved the activities here – a lot of people make a 180-degree turn around,” he said.

SPORT Cats expect an easy run

After tough win against the valiant but injury-depleted Bulldogs, the Cats face what could only be described as an easy run home. The Cats will play all bottom-eight teams in their last four games including this year’s wooden spoon contenders Essendon and Brisbane. No doubt the Cats will hope either Sydney or GWS drops one of their final four games, with tight competition for the top-four spots. The Giants are second on the ladder and the Swans third. Both are separated from Geelong at fourth place by percentage alone. Adelaide, which blew a top-four opportunity last weekend by conceding three late goals to the Bombers, is just 0.1 of percentage point behind the Cats. With a similarly easy run home they could usurp the Cats’ top four spot. However with danger games against West Coast in round 24 and a showdown against Port Adelaide the week before, the Crows could just as easily hand it to the Cats. The Cats will hope for some big wins to get the percentage boost required for a second chance final in September. Clinching third place rather than fourth would likely mean a qualifying final against GWS instead of reigning premiers and ladder leaders Hawthorn. But with consistency being the Cat’s biggest weakness this season, fans will be desperately hoping they don’t drop an easy game. The Cats lost supposedly easy games this year to Carlton, Collingwood and Sydney and have drawn criticism from commentators and former club greats. With Jimmy Bartel playing his 300th game and Corey Enright breaking the Cats’ all-time games record last weekend, speculation has grown over their futures. However, Cats coach Chris Scott told Fox Footy’s AFL 360 on Monday night that the club would not confirm contract specifics.
ON THE BITE Chris Pitman Anglers caught a wide variety of fish over the past week. Casting soft plastics in tight around structure on Corio Bay accounted for pinkie snapper and flathead to 45cm. The Stingaree Bay spoil produced the odd whiting on pippies. Clifton Springs fished well for whiting and squid. I drifted over the shallow grass beds on Monday morning to find squid in fantastic numbers, with size 3 jigs in white colourations catching specimens to almost 1kg. Anglers fishing further out in six to seven metres took whiting to 40cm on pippies and tenderized squid. Queenscliff Harbour gave land-based anglers access to squid. Small 2.5-size jigs worked well on the slower-running tides while anglers fishing the main cut caught silver trevally and the odd whiting to 40cm. The Barwon River estuary provided shelter for anglers who caught small Australian salmon, trevally, mullet and whiting on prawn, pippies and squid. Surf beaches hosted large schools of salmon that were keen to hit metal lures. The runin tide was best. Bait anglers who fished after dark caught gummy sharks on fresh squid and salmon. Next week looks good for salmon in the surf on lures during the day and gummy shark on bait at night, while Clifton Springs should remain hot for squid.

The battle for promotion positions in NPL2 West has taken on another level of tension with the top four sides now separated by four points with five rounds to go. North Geelong has added to the pressure and excitement by creating further congestion, taking down league leader Whittlesea Ranges 3-0 away last Saturday. This week the Warriors take another road trip, this time to Springvale to take on the White Eagles. Springvale come off 3-0 victory themselves after putting away cellar-dweller Nunawading at home. It’s the White Eagles second 3-0 win in a row with Damir Stoilovic and Isaiah Joseph their danger men in those contests, scoring a goal apiece in both wins. foot early on, when only after four minutes Eze chipped an oncoming Luke Gallo for the opener after receiving a pin point pass from Juso Julardzija. On 26 minutes Michael Anderson’s cross after a good combination of play was well finished by Eze to give the Warrior’s the two goal buffer and that’s how it stood for the half. From the restart the Warriors continued their pressing and two minutes in Eze’s solo effort was rewarded after he opened up the defence up and rounded his finish past the keeper net his first triple on Australian shores. North Geelong’s defence deserves equal plaudits though proving organised and too strong throughout the match with Whittlesea not being able to have a crack on target all second half. This coming weekend is a crossover week where the West conference meets the East, with all top four sides playing tricky opponents, we could be seeing new leaders come Sunday night.
