Suicides ignored By ALANA MITCHELSON A NEW suicide prevention initiative launched by the State Government is under fire after failing to recognise Casey or Cardinia Shire, despite concerning suicide rates in the region. The $27 million framework, announced last week, would focus on halving the rate of suicide over the next 10 years by implementing strategies such as workforce training, schoolbased support and mental health literacy programs in six local government areas. These include the Mornington Peninsula, Brimbank, Whittlesea, Mildura, Latrobe Valley and Ballarat regions, selected on the basis of prevalence, population and community demographics, local capacity and existing suicide prevention efforts. But figures show Cardinia Shire and Casey have higher rates of suicide than in Melton and Whittlesea. In recent years, suicide rates in Casey have fluctuated between six and 11 per 100,000, while Cardinia rates exceeded 19 in 2010 and 2011. Rates more than doubled in the City of Casey from 2010 to 2011 as communities were devastated by clusters of youth suicides. In a 12-month period, 10 people aged 24 or younger ended their lives in Casey-Cardinia. State member for Gembrook Brad Battin, who has a background in the mental health field, plans to raise the matter at the next parliament sitting on Monday 15 August. “While we always welcome any funding towards mental health, it is extremely disap-

pointing that the Cardinia and Casey corridors haven’t been recognised in the framework, especially after the issues we had in the past five years,” Mr Battin said. “The government has failed to identify the ongoing issue in the growth corridor of the south east. I intend to raise it with government at the next parliament sitting to reconsider their position. I will also request the government delivers a community health and well-being centre for Casey at Berwick Secondary College. “It is not new and deserves attention. The community need assistance and have continuously requested intervention. This vital project is of the highest importance and will save local young people’s lives and offer assistance to youth with mental health illness.” The proposed mental health facility at Berwick College is not currently on the government’s priority list. Principal Kerri Bolch said her vision for many years had been to build a centre at the school’s site to educate, and be available to students and young school graduates. “We have lived through some terrible times in Casey, and we are still experiencing loss to suicide,” Ms Bolch said. “I am absolutely committed to supporting our young people and our families with mental health issues. We have the support of St John of God hospital, the Rotary Club of Berwick, Bendigo Community Bank Beaconsfield, the City of Casey, South Eastern Private Hospital and several members of parliament but I am disappointed that we have been unable to attract funding.

“I am determined that we will make this happen. I hope when these trials are complete, Berwick College will be supported to help look after our area.” Lifeline Gippsland’s David Rohde said suicide rates in the Gippsland region were above the state average. “Suicide deaths are higher than the road toll yet there is more funding spent on addressing the road toll than suicide,” Mr Rohde said. “It’s great to see it finally being recognised. Hopefully the funding spreads to the rest of Victoria and we see an impact from these programs.” A Department of Human Services spokesman said the trial locations would test and refine new strategies and form the basis for future investment. In August last year, state coroner Audrey Jamieson released her findings on an investigation into the cluster of youth suicides in Casey and Cardinia in 2011 and 2012. The resulting recommendations included a call for the Municipal Association of Victoria in consultation with the City of Casey to develop a suicide prevention and post-vention response framework for local government. The Federal Government responded by rolling out a suicide prevention training program to four high schools in Casey, Cardinia and Dandenong. Bands stay calm under pressure By ALANA MITCHELSON KOOWEERUP-BASED band Panicking overcame their stage nerves to be crowned this year’s champions of the Pakenham FREEZA Push Start Battle of the Bands competition. The nine young acts were each allocated 20 minutes to win the judges’ hearts. Kooweerup Secondary College senior-school students Amy Saunders and Rhiannon Anderson performed beautiful harmonies and exhibited their diverse musical talents with confidence. The duo alternated between singing and playing the piano throughout their set. The girls’ music teacher David Campbell, whose enthusiastic personality has been likened to a real life Jack Black from the School of Rock film. “The story behind Panicking’s name is that they were both quite nervous and anxious about performing live, and it’s a way to make fun of that and conquer their nerves,” Mr Campbell said. “They formed as part of their school project about a year and a half ago but they’re really good friends and it looks like they’ll continue their act after finishing VCE.

Stick to safe driving call By ALANA MITCHELSON CARDINIA Shire Council officers have warned residents to be wary of the new national Life Saving Stickers campaign which aims to raise awareness and reducing pedestrian fatalities and injuries. The Australian Road Safety Federation (ARSF) initiative involves attaching the life-sized stickers of children stepping towards the road onto rubbish wheelie bins. When the bins are placed near a kerb the images provide a strong visual warning for motorists to drive cautiously. In the past four years there have been 25 incidents on Cardinia roads involving a pedestrian. While none have been fatal, VicRoads figures show that more than 40 per cent of accidents involving pedestrians in Cardinia have resulted in serious injuries with the Princes Highway intersections at Pakenham Road and McGregor Road identified as problem areas. On a national scale, Australia is on track this year to equal the number of pedestrian fatalities recorded in 2015 which grew for the third consecutive year. The sticker images have been created based on research findings that signs depicting motion triggered faster reaction times and “increased vigilance” among drivers. But Cardinia shire senior traffic engineer Nicholas Charrett was hesitant to advocate for the national campaign and recommended that residents be cautious. “Although the council is a strong advocate for road safety initiatives, some concerns have been raised regarding this particular initiative. Council would not be encouraging residents

This presents a serious potential safety issue and possible difficulties with collection. “The council trialled the application of a yellow and black sticker to residents’ bins in four residential streets across the shire in 2015.

“These stickers displayed the words ‘50 in my street’ and were intended to raise driver awareness. “The trial showed no noticeable impact on driver behaviour and our results were consistent with that of other municipalities who have undertaken similar trials in the past.” ARSF CEO Russell White said some councils were buying the stickers in bulk to make them available to residents.

“Between January and May this year, 67 pedestrians were killed on Australian roads. If trends continue the number could reach or even exceed last year’s number of 165,” he said. “If someone is exceeding the speed limit, we hope these stickers will prompt them to immediately slow down. “Even small changes in vehicle speed can have a dramatic impact on stopping distances.”

Mr White said that of the 67 pedestrians killed this year, seven were under the age of 16. “Our research tells us that for every fatality there is between 20 and 30 injuries,” Mr White said. “With the impact on families and friends, that’s thousands of lives shattered every year.” For more information about Life Saving Stickers, visit www.australianroadsafetyfoundation.com.

Reckless driver jailed By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A SERIAL disqualified driver who drove down Monash Freeway’s emergency lane to escape from pursuing police then urinated in front of parkland pedestrians, a court heard. Angelo Madafferi, 21, of Hallam asked his lawyer if his impending jail term could wait until after lunch at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 1 August. He had pleaded guilty to dangerous driving as well as driving an unregistered vehicle while disqualified three times in a week in Hampton Park, Doveton and Narre Warren. During the last offence on 29 May, police followed Madafferi and another male in a white Commodore with incorrect number-plates from a fast-food outlet on Belgrave-Hallam Road, Hallam. Police saw the car disobey a red turning-arrow onto a Monash Freeway on-ramp about 4.40pm. Other afternoon peaktraffic moved out of the way of the car, which was driven down the freeway’s emergency stopping lane and turned north at Ernest Wanke Road, Dandenong Magistrates’

Court was told. The empty car was found by police parked on the wrong side of Riflebird Avenue. At a nearby park, Madafferi was found urinating in front of passers-by. Madafferi denied knowing anything about the abandoned Commodore until police found documents with his name inside the vehicle. The car was impounded on the spot. Madafferi also pleaded guilty to making the threat “he owes me money by tomorrow or he’s dead” to an occupant behind a front security door at a Narre Warren South home in March. On 30 September, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court had disqualified Madafferi from driving for 12 months and put him on a community corrections order over 26 offences that were mainly driving related. A Corrections officer told the court that the accused’s engagement with the CCO was “poor”. Since October, Madafferi hadn’t completed an hour of his 250-hour work order. Madafferi’s lawyer said the accused had been recently

employed and training as an earth-mover and had completed a certificate three in civil construction. “This is the first time in years he’s done something with his career,” the lawyer said. “There’s no way he’ll comply with a corrections order.” Magistrate Julie O’Donnell retorted: “That’s lucky because he won’t be getting one.” Ms O’Donnell noted the accused’s “ridiculous” criminal history - including 11 driving suspended or disqualified - and non-compliance with court orders. “You’re entering into (jail with) parole. Clearly he shouldn’t be driving on our roads.” She cancelled the community corrections order and sentenced Madafferi to 21 months’ jail - including resentencing for last year’s offences. Madafferi was also convicted, fined $2000 and disqualified from driving for three years. He will be eligible for parole in nine months.

School in screening drive By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS HALLAM Senior College students are joining the latest push for Casey residents to think and talk about family violence’s underestimated scourge. VCAL students will be helping out at a premiere featurelength screening of Call Me Dad that aims to pack out the college’s theatre. It’s a cathartic and rare insight into participants in men’s behaviour change groups and women support groups in Casey. The project feeds into the students’ practical investigation into family violence, how it can be tackled and how solutions might be found, said vice principal David Caughey. The aim is to make it real to them, he said. As part of the drive, the students will hunt for sponsors,

fund-raise and help out on the film night. More awareness is important for an issue “that’s still a little bit in the periphery,” Mr Caughey said. “It’s a strong philosophy of the school that we’re here to serve the community, rather than serving ourselves. It’s not just about an ATAR score.” Of course, for some families and children in Casey it’s not peripheral but “front and centre” and their friends might not understand what victims are going through, he said. “Events like this help people develop a language on how to talk about it.” As is widely known, Casey has the highest reported family violence in the state. But as Mr Caughey points out “it’s still difficult to say how widespread it is because it’s a little bit

more in the shadows”. The documentary features David Nugent - who also works as counsellor at Hallam Senior College - and his Heavy METAL (Men’s Education Towards Anger and Life) group. Mr Nugent told Star News that many people don’t understand that family violence includes verbal abuse and manipulation inside the household. “This is a community problem and it needs to be solved in the community.” The screening is at 7-10pm on 26 August at Hallam Senior College and is followed by a question and answer community panel. Nevertheless, the users who do fly into high-end tirades are terrifying and distressing for their families, he says. Mr Rogut says the main thing is to keep safe, talk calmly, try not to antagonise and make the “hard call” to triple-zero if need be. He advises families and friends

to communicate with ice users. Tell them you’re there for them, ask them what you can do and encourage them to talk to you. In one case he recalls a mother locking herself in a room and weeping in the midst of her son’s ice-fuelled psychosis. Hearing her sobs, the son then calmed down and began to question the impact on his mum. “It can be heart-breaking but people get through it. “People at the workshops think they’re isolated but they find out others have got through it.” Ice addiction isn’t necessarily a long-term affliction, Mr Rogut says. About two-thirds of ice users who seek treatment are clean and remain clean. The repairing happens when the

user stops taking the drug, he says. “You are not giving up just a drug, you’re giving up a lifestyle.” The free workshop is open to anyone affected by an ice user. THERE is light at the end of the tunnel for loved ones of ice users and it isn’t necessarily an oncoming train, says a drug-and-alcohol public education officer. Dean Rogut, of drug support and treatment agency Turning Point, is heading a free advice workshop for affected families in Narre Warren on 12 August. “We remind people to take care of themselves. “They get so caught up in the life of one person. They live it 24 hours, seven days a week so their own personal health - mental and otherwise - suffers. “So we say talk to a GP, counsellor or call a (helpline) phone number. Take some time for yourself.” At these meetings, Mr Rogut talks about how to help a loved one on ice, and how to get them off the drug. He says families meet others in similar predicaments and realise they are not alone at the forums. Local support group contacts are shared, or otherwise a local support group may be formed by the workshop participants. Mr Rogut thinks there’s more acceptance and less stigmatisation of families of ice-users. “The No.1 barrier is stigma. “Families have been reluctant to access help because they’re worried what people will think about them. What kind of family are they? “We are trying to break down those barriers and say it’s not your fault.” Mr Rogut said counselling, helplines and cognitive therapy were the most effective options to

I REFER to Rex Flannery’s scurrilous letter in last week’s Berwick News. I don’t normally respond to Flannery’s letters. I have never met this character, and there is no point responding to someone who blindly pursues a personal and conflicted agenda without possessing any of the facts. Once again Flannery makes a fool of himself! He alleges in his letter that I was in a backroom somewhere when A Current Affair was allowed to film the most recent council meeting. I was in fact in hospital undertaking some tests. The following day, when I was able to, I conducted an interview with A Current Affair, where I spoke about the great things that are happening in Casey, such as the recent and independent customer satisfaction survey where our council achieved above the state average in every measure, and a whopping seven points above in the area of overall council direction. It seems that our residents are telling us a very different and positive story than the one Flannery has been manufacturing. Service savings I AM pleased to share some of the work council is doing in the area of continuous improvement towards cost saving measures in response to Mr Glazebrook’s demand (Just Tell Us, Cranbourne News, 28 July). We’ve been working to achieve efficiencies throughout this council term to provide the best services at the lowest cost to ratepayers. In fact, in 2015/16 we saved $3 million through evaluation, innovation and transformation of our services. Some of the savings included: - Better contract negotiations for waste services and parks and open spaces maintenance ($1.2m); - Reviewing our operations, improving and digitising some of our processes ($385,000); - Conversion of street lighting to LED ($650,000). I’d love to share more but there is simply not enough space. Keep an eye out as council will be reporting back to the community on its savings and initiatives, which are expected to total $15 million over the next five years! A DEVON Meadows teenager has won the highest award at scout level. Teagan Taylor was awarded the Australian Scout Medallion in a special ceremony by the 1st Devon Meadows Scout Group. At the awards night Teagan spoke of her desire to continue on her journey and set new goals to achieve the Queen’s Scout and Baden-Powell Scout awards. Juliana Pearson from the scout group said: “Teagan’s achievement is a direct result of her tenacity, drive and willingness to accept challenges head on and push through. “In her journey Teagan has matured as a scout who visibly demonstrates the core values of the scouting movement and leadership skills of fairness, kindness and understanding amongst her peers.” The 1st Devon Meadows Scout Group is after new members aged from eight to 14 years old. DRIVERS parking their car at Merinda Park railway station should invest in one-way numberplate screws. In one afternoon, four cars were targeted by hungry thieves on a registration plate blitz. Unfortunately, the four cars were parked in a position at the Cranbourne North station which isn’t covered by surveillance. Police are appealing to the Casey public in the hope that someone will present useful information on the thefts. The cars were targeted on Thursday 28 July. THE Don’t Drive and Pokemon signs have been validated after a man crashed into a Berwick school - you guessed it - playing Pokemon Go. It is understood the Berwick motorist was negotiating a roundabout when he lost control at Flowerfield Close. He ran off the road through a fence and into a school portable building. Luckily no-one was injured. Casey Highway Patrol is investigating the PokeStop crash, which occurred on Ridgemont Drive about 6.50pm on Thursday 29 July. Police have been told the local man was trying to capture a Pokemon Go creature on his phone when he lost control of his car. But a police report has alleged that the 19-year-old “did not level up nor collect any stardust or candies only debris from the crash”. “Any PokeBalls, eggs or potions the driver may have had remaining only attracted police, leaving the wild Pokemon for another day.”

The driver returned a negative preliminary breath test, however it is expected he will be charged on summons with careless driving. ANYONE still with doubts on the consequences of breaching intervention orders? A serial family violence offender had been in custody since being found in her parents’ bedroom the day before - allegedly at the parents’ invitation. Police stated there was no violence, no threats and absolute co-operation and remorse by the 32-year-old woman during her arrest. Against her was that the full intervention order - just a fortnight old - barred her from being within 200 metres of her parents’ house and that she’d been fined and put on community corrections orders for similar breaches in the past. She was jailed for 30 days - less the one day in remand custody. NOT a word has come from Narre Warren South MP Judith Graley’s office after a Sunday Herald Sun report on a 2015 overseas trip. The paper didn’t have much luck getting details from Ms Graley on the length and cost of the trip, nor the exact destinations, which was apparently somewhere in Europe. It reported that little could be gleaned from Ms Graley’s report on the trip. Star News has also put in a fruitless enquiry to Ms Graley and the State Government. There has been no reply and, by the way, also none from Opposition Scrutiny of Government spokeswoman Inga Peulich.

Keep it safe By GEORGIA WESTGARTH CRANBOURNE, Tooradin, Narre Warren, Clyde - no south-east suburb is safe from aggravated burglary and no home owner can be sure they won’t be targeted next. But what can you do if your home is invaded by balaclavaclad thieves? Slater and Gordon criminal lawyer Veronika Drago explains how self-defence used wrongly in certain circumstances could result in imprisonment. Ms Drago represents clients from across Melbourne and appears in suburban courts, including Dandenong and Frankston and advises that triple-zero be a home owner’s first point of call. “Home owners should never approach a home invader where retreat is possible,” Ms Drago said. “In circumstances where retreat is possible but the home owner instead decides to use force, this could expose the home owner to criminal liability.” Such force should only be

used in circumstances where a home owner believes that it is necessary to defend themselves, another or their property, she explains. “The force must always be reasonable and proportionate to the threat to their personal safety, the safety of another or the property damage. “A person is also entitled to rely on self-defence if they take steps to forestall a threatened attack before it has begun. The key issue is whether the home owner’s perception of danger led him or her to believe that the use of defensive force was necessary and that that belief was based on reasonable grounds.” With baseball bats a common go-to for residents fearful of their safety, Ms Drago told The News the use of weapons is based on the type of threat a resident is facing from the intruder. “Weapons can only be used in circumstances where there is a direct and imminent threat from an intruder, however it must be proportionate,” she said. “A home owner cannot simply hit an intruder with a baseball bat just because they are

standing in their kitchen as this would be disproportionate.” If a home owner badly injures an intruder Ms Drago said it again depends on circumstance. “A person who injures an intruder could face criminal charges and be found guilty of an offence if the court finds that they did not act in self-defence,” Ms Drago said. “They could also possibly face civil action. Again, the issue of proportionality must be considered. “The home owner, in extreme examples, could also possibly face civil action if their actions caused serious injury to the intruder.” Ms Drago said an intruder may have the right to pursue a civil claim against the home owner if injured in some circumstances. But, “a home owner would have the right to dispute the claim”. The most recent crime statistics show a steep rise in overall crime in the City of Casey - up more than 15 per cent on a per capita basis in the past year.

The News reported the frightening encounter in July and on Tuesday 2 August police released an image of a white sedan in the hope fresh evidence will come to light. The teenage boy was walking alone in parkland adjacent to The Esplanade, at Berwick Springs Reserve, just before 5.30pm on Sunday 17 July. He was on the footpath when a 1990s model white Holden Commodore sedan with black rims stopped on the road. The man in the passenger seat got out and grabbed the boy by the hand and said “you’re coming with me”. The man tried pulling the boy toward the car, but the boy managed to kick him in the shin and ran off. The man tried to follow the boy but gave up and got back into the car and the two men

A TEDDY-bear, a blanket, pyjamas and a few comforts - it’s a little significant something to help the thousands of kids taken out of the family home. Backpacks 4 Vic Kids founder Sally Ritter has delivered more than 1600 packs in Victoria and parts of NSW to kids going into foster care and emergency housing since she started the charity. Such is the demand she’s moved the business out of home to a Camms Road factory along with new $2500 monthly overheads. She says the not-for-profit charity is in desperate need of donations for babies and children up to 17 years old - new soft toys, blankets, sleepwear, backpacks, baby bathing items - as well as cash. In a bolt from the blue, South Eastern Masonic Centre arrived like a knight in shining armour. It rang and offered to stage a rock-and-roll dinner dance to raise funds for the charity. “It was just amazing,” Ms Ritter said. “Someone rings and says we hold this thing - can we raise money for you? “That would be great!” Ms Ritter, a former foster carer, started the charity when she made inquiries to donate to a similar Queensland-based group.

When she found out some of the proceeds were wasted on shipping backpacks to Victorian kids, she forged her own organisation within eight weeks. The group then went on to demand the victim’s house keys and home address. It is thought that information was not provided to the offenders due to a disruption caused by a Good Samaritan. A nearby tradesman, who was not involved in the incident, intervened, saying, “that’s enough,” and the group of males allowed the victim to leave. Police have released CCTV images of the men wanted in relation to the robbery.

SAFE havens for victims of family violence will be made available in Casey. The State Government in partnership with 16 community housing organisations will buy and lease properties around Victoria. A spokeswoman from the Department of Health and Human Services confirmed the planned acquisition of homes in the City of Casey, City of Greater Dandenong and the Cardinia Shire. Houses will also be leased in Casey and Dandenong and are

set to be move in ready by 30 June next year. All up, 300 homes will be opened up to women and children escaping family violence in metropolitan and regional Victoria. A statement from Minister for Housing, Disability and Ageing Martin Foley said the first wave of homes were about to be leased under the $50 million Rapid Housing Assistance program, a part of the State Government’s response to the Royal Commission into Family Violence. The program will see 124 properties leased and the acqui-

sition of 184 homes. As Casey continues to rank as one of the state’s worst areas for family violence offending, the emergency relief housing could be in high demand. In charge of the Casey Family Violence Unit (CFVU), Sergeant Ian Lane said the CFVU dealt with more than 4500 family violence reports every year. “That’s way too many for one small unit to be able to look at,” he said. “The CFVU is the largest of all family violence units in the state - no other has a sergeant and nine staff members and none of them have 10 people.”

Animal activist and founder of the not-for-profit organisation Oscarâ€™s Law, Debra Tranter, not only publicised their condition, but secretly planted hidden cameras on the property. Ms Tranter was shocked at the state of the dogs and has followed the outcome to the very end. â€œThe dogs were chained to poles and some to trees all day, on short leads of around two metres,â€? Ms Tranter said of the appalling conditions. â€œIt was very obvious they had no life, these dogs were living a life of deprivation.â€? The welfare of the dogs was first reported by The News in April this year, and since then the owner, Troy Scoble has faced court on 53 charges. Before Mr Scoble attended the Dandenong Magistratesâ€™ Court, there was even a change.org petition set up by Ben Wild of the Animal Justice Party. The petition asked Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce, to â€œsave the Blind Bight dogs before itâ€™s too lateâ€? â€“ 15,862 supporters signed the petition. And Twitter wasnâ€™t far behind, with relentless campaigning online. Mr Scoble escaped conviction by Magistrate Pauline Spencer because he had no prior convictions and was of â€œgood characterâ€?. But he was ordered to pay a donation to the court fund of $1000 and $1500 in Casey

Ms Tranter is calling it a huge win for the dogs - but still has a long way to go to change the legislation that kept them there for so long. â€œLegislation didnâ€™t deem this cruel,â€? she said about the legal length of tethering dogs. â€œThe law says dogs can be chained legally if they have food and water and we couldnâ€™t save these dogs based on animal welfare grounds,â€? Ms Tranter said. The story attracted huge online outrage and Ms Tranter said the fact the law prevented further action was what sparked the attention. â€œI think that surprised and

angered people - what the community views as cruelty, the law doesnâ€™t,â€? she said. â€œEvery time we put a call out to the public they responded and thatâ€™s indicative of the way to we treat and see our animals, we are a nation that loves our pets.â€? During Ms Tranterâ€™s fourweek campaign dozens of people contacted her asking how they could be of help to free the 33 American bulldogs and Staffordshire bull terriers. The animal lover has since contacted the City of Casey and offered for Oscarâ€™s Law to pay for the dogs to be trained so they can eventually be rehomed. â€œBecause theyâ€™ve been seized ownership can only be determined by a magistrate, so council canâ€™t re-home or vet work the dogs until it goes to court,â€? Ms Tranter said. â€œThe dogs are in limbo they have to sit in a pound until the court case.â€?

The defence opportunities alone surpassed the size of the Australian auto industry, Mr Weinzieri said. “We tend to find that market is enormous. “Manufacturing is alive and as strong as it’s ever been.” It was a matter of not doing manufacturing like it was done in the past. APT restructured to a 24-7 production model and bought world-class technology, figuring it would give it more flexibility and speed. It could also better give what its customers wanted, when they wanted it and with “zero defects”, Mr Weinzieri said. He’s forecasting between 50-100 per cent further growth in the 2016-’17 year. On the other hand, Mr Bowman took the audience through the “whiteknuckle ride” of his 18-month business. He and his wife, both being teachers, created Class Creator software after seeing first-hand the long-winded “inefficient” process of assigning kids to particular school classes. Class Creator assigns children to classes, taking into account a host of factors such as each child’s behaviour, special needs, ESL as well as avoiding diabolical pairings of kids. Or as Mr Bowman puts it, ensuring ‘Molokov’ isn’t put in the same class as ‘Cocktail’.

Despite two rival competitors - one who put a patent on their technology - the software has been sold into 295 schools in 10 countries, including Australia, Iceland, the US and UK. Another speaker Asyl Haidar of Pitcher Partners presented some of the most innovative ideas in the business world. Such as BMW investing in a “pay as you use” model in which customers register to drive an electric car without owning one. Mr Haidar also noted John Deere use of sensors to collect wide-ranging data on farmers’ behaviour on their tractors. That data is used by John Deere to advise farmers on best cropping practice, and to branch out into providing insurance. Other speakers included Annemarie Cross on digital podcasts, and Patrick Ramsden on digital loyalty card systems.

LIKE the region itself, the Casey Cardinia Business Hub has grown. Casey mayor Sam Aziz officially opened the hub’s second phase - a complex with 150 working desks and 40 office spaces at 66 Victor Crescent in Narre Warren on Friday. Cr Aziz said developments like the hub - a partnership between the City of Casey and the Waterman Group - were critical to promoting innovation and economic growth in the region. “Seven out of 10 residents leave Casey to go to work,” Cr Aziz said. “For us, this is unacceptable. We need to provide employment opportunities closer to home.” Cr Aziz has personal experience of the frustration experienced by commuters. He said the daily Monash grind forced him to give up his career in the Customs Department to find work closer to home.

“Casey has a population of 300,000 people and it is growing by 10,000 every year, so it doesn’t take a mathematical genius to work out that there will be a population of half a million people in 20 years' time,” he said. “Employment aspirations in the City of Casey are very real.” Cr Aziz paid tribute to Neville Waterman of the Waterman Group for his vision. “It is inspirational to work with someone like Neville, who thinks outside the square and delivers outcomes for the City of Casey.” Mr Waterman said he loved working with small businesspeople, who regularly inspired him by sharing their dreams. With tongue in cheek, he suggested the space - next to the original building at 64 Victor Crescent be renamed The Dream Centre.

This was the key message from South East Melbourne Manufacturers Alliance (SEMMA) executive officer Adrian Boden at the organisation’s 13th annual general meeting on Tuesday 26 July. “Between our companies we have an incredibly diverse range of capabilities and technologies that could only benefit from more collaboration,” he said. Mr Boden said SEMMA continued to engage with the CSIRO, Swinburne University and the Australian Synchrotron. “This year has been one of collaboration and promoting the need for collaboration,” he said. “The numbers do not lie. We perform very badly on the global indexes for business to business and business to research and development collaboration. “It is the critical area where Australian manufacturing needs to improve. “We will continue to develop opportunities and solutions to improve this situation but it can only be achieved with your engagement.” Mr Boden said SEMMA would increase branding and marketing efforts over the next 12 months to boost its

But the visitors led 21-13 at quarter-time after star Pakenham scorer Ben Gaze found himself in early foul trouble. Stagnant ball movement and stale defence in the early going gave Maccabi its break, and the visitors played the first quarter largely on their own terms. Pakenham guard Josh Smith was his side’s only consistent offensive threat early. He finished with 23 points and 6 boards on 10 of 30 from the field, but most of those shots were necessary in the scheme of the game. The home side bounced back

in the second to trail by just four points at the main break, but it was in the second half that the action really switched into overdrive. An early three from guard Hayden Clydesdale (16 points on 4 of 9 from deep) and two freethrows from Smith put Pakenham up by the slimmest of margins but with a shade over eight minutes remaining in the quarter import big man Kenneth Hall (7 points, 10 boards) went down clutching his lower leg. The home side was already shorthanded in the absence of Hayden Davey, and Reid’s group then started to lack the post defence Hall provides. IT WAS quite appropriate that the busiest racecourse in Victoria closed out the 2015-’16 racing season on Sunday with the Pakenham Racing Club hosting a nine-race card at Tynong. The PRC raced 48 times at Racing.com Park, with 19 turf, 27 synthetic and two hybrid meetings accounting for 12 per cent of the total country wagering turnover from last season. The highlight of the ninerace card saw the running of three finals in the Winter Chal-

lenge Synthetic Series for the stayers, middle distance gallopers, and sprinters. All three carried fabulous stakes of $50,000, the series an initiative of the PRC and Racing Victoria to promote the virtues of synthetic racing. And the spoils were shared. John Moloney’s Zenithal took out the 2200-metre stayers race, Matt Williams trained Our Bottino to victory in the mile, while jockey Nick Hall capped off a day to remember with a

win aboard the Cindy Alderson-trained Smart Dart in the 1200-metre dash. SHOCKWAVES reverberated around the South East Football Netball League on Saturday as news spread that Cranbourne champion Marc Holt had suffered a fractured leg. Holt, who has kicked more than 900 goals in a stellar career, sustained his injury after an accidental collision with Tooradin’s Adam Galea in the first minute of the third term in Cranbourne’s 79-point victory at Casey Fields. Cranbourne coach Simon Goosey hopes to regain his star forward during the finals – but the clock is already ticking in a massive race against time. “Obviously, he’s one of the best players in the league, so we’re going to miss him, but at the same time you can’t build a game plan around one player,” Goosey said. “The beauty of what we’ve created over the last 18 months means we can structure up tall or small, and players step up and play their role. If that wasn’t the case, we’d be in a bit of trouble right now, but the players and coaches are excited by the challenge, everyone’s embracing it.” The Eagles booted four goals against the breeze in the opening term and then solidified their advantage with a 6.4-to-0.1 second term – before ramping up their defence in the third. Youngster Zak Roscoe stood tall in Holt’s absence, booting a career-high seven goals in an eye-catching performance, while Kory Grant and Troy Tharle chimed in with three apiece. Anthony Vella, Glenn Osborne and Anthony Fischer were impressive while the Eagles midfield covered for the loss of Shaun Marusic, who missed with a stiff back. Galea continued his great form for the Gulls, while Josh Muling and Michael Hobbs did their best to stop the Eagles flow. Doveton has continued its roller-coaster run with a best-of-the-season 28-point victory over Narre Warren at Robinson Oval. The fourth-placed Doves are harder to read than Chinese arithmetic as they haven’t strung a win or a loss together for 10 games now. Doveton’s total team defence suffocated the Magpies who finished four goals short of their previous lowest score for the season. But it wasn’t all dourness from the Doves, with Shannon Henwood booting five and the likes of Darren Allen, Russ Gabriel and Sam Raru showing the Doves’ top-end talent is the equal of any going around. The reigning champs had to dig deep after a slow start, gradually grinding down the Doves in one of the best games for the season. The Doves took the early initiative, surprising the Magpies with a tough brand of netball in the first half, taking a 13-11 lead at quarter time and extending that to 27-24 at the half. Rahni Samason (goal shooting) and Samantha Kappl (goal attack) were providing headaches, while Linda Hunt (wing attack) and Breanne Miller (wing defence) were matching the mighty Magpie midcourt. But Narre Warren, through some great attacking play from the likes of Leigh Taylor (wing attack), Tayla Shannon (goal attack) and Chloe Phillips (goal shooting), regained the ascendency in the third term to tie things up at three-quarter time. Adele Clydesdale (goal keeper) and Kara Hargrave (goal defence) shut the Doves down in the final term, while Phillips was cool in a crisis under the ring. The Magpies scored 14 to nine in the final term to record a thrilling victory. Cranbourne is about to face its biggest test but can do no more than keep on winning, this time with a 40-31 victory over Tooradin at Casey Fields.

Considering they were dead last after round three it’s been a pretty impressive turnaround. Hailey Galpin (goal keeping) played a huge

role for the Eagles, filling in for the absent Sharni Lambden in defence, while Alanah Hardy (goal attack) and Tegan Stahl (goal shooting) were making every post a winner. But it’s not so rosy for Tooradin. The Seagulls need to defeat either Hampton Park (4th) or Beaconsfield (2nd) over the next fortnight or miss out on what looked to be a certain finals booking at the start of the year. It’s been an amazing fall from grace for the Seagulls, who won their first three games and then pushed Narre Warren to the limit in a onegoal loss in round four. Since then the Gulls have won just four games against the bottom three teams on the ladder. In other games, Hampton Park tuned up for this week’s big clash against Tooradin with a 5730 win over Berwick, while Beaconsfield continued its stellar season with a 46-28 victory over Pakenham. The Eagles were well led by the competitive duo of Danni Cameron (goal attack) and Gabby Stinear (goal defence) in defence, while Zoe Mason (wing defence) and Rylee Nelson (wing attack) showed off their ball skills through the midcourt. WINTER obviously isn’t normally the season of choice for an open car motoring but with the Audi TTS’s heated seats, hot air blown onto our necks and a behind-the-seat air deflector we travelled in cosy comfort. We reckon its sharp lines and interlocking facets make it one of the best looking sports coupes and roadsters on the current market. Inside, the styling of the TTS roadster is neat and beautifully simple. We particularly liked the turbine styling of the air vents and the way the controls for

temperature, fan speed and air direction have been integrated into the centre of the vents. The infotainment system is interesting in that there’s no central screen, rather it’s incorporated in what Audi calls a Virtual Cockpit directly in front of the driver. The VC can be viewed in different ways; big dials when you’re in a sporting mood, added information with smaller dials when your brain is in cruise mode. A clever feature is the mounting of the microphones into the safety belts to control the voice activation system and use mobile phones.

Performance is very good and throttle response is excellent with only minimal turbo lag which makes overtaking a breeze and hills almost cease to exist. Road holding is excellent with a nicely balanced feel at all times and gear changes are very fast and when you select the dynamic modes the exhaust makes all the right burbling and spitting sounds as you zip up and down through the gears.
