Brutal assault By ANEEKA SIMONIS AN AFRICAN youth gang is believed to have carried out a terrifying, drawn-out attack on two Pakenham men right up to their doorstep over the weekend. Police were called to the riot at Sandalwood Drive, Pakenham, after 11pm on Saturday 16 July to find about 50 “Sudanese” youths spilling out onto the street, with witness reports indicating they were jumping onto and in front of cars as they tried to pass through the chaos. Dan, 22, and his mate, Scott, 21, from Pakenham, claimed they were brutally beaten and kicked by the gang as they attempted to pass through to their home. The attack started at the roundabout near Sweet Pea Drive and staggered right through to one of the men’s homes on Sandalwood Drive. Dan claimed the gang – at one stage believed to be a group of as many as 25 youths – only left once they realised he had managed to call police. “They started kicking us and punching us from behind in the face, ribs and legs. I got dragged over to the park opposite my house. My mate had six of them kicking him in the ribs and I had about five of them continuing to punch my face,” he claimed. Dan said they managed to
get home, but were followed and the punching attack continued – with his mate Scott’s head being smashed into the brick wall at the front of their home during the repeated alleged assault. Dan said he had been to Casey Hospital twice since the attack and was suffering four hairline fractures in the jaw, swelling and bruising. Scott sustained injuries to the ribs, with one possibly fractured.

Champion in life and death BEAU Miller was a champion footballer but to the people who loved him at the Devon Meadows, Tooradin and Pakenham Football Clubs – he was much, much more than that. The 34-year-old lost a short battle against an aggressive cancer last week, leaving behind wife Stephanie and two young boys, Chase, 5, and Tripp, 8 months. Mural shows a splash of faith A MURAL reflecting the diversity of the shire was unveiled on the front wall of the Uniting Church in Main Street, Pakenham, on Sunday 17 July. Among those present at the unveiling and dedication of the mural were artist Rob Matheson, members of the Uniting Church in the Officer Pakenham Mission Area, Beaconhills College, Outlook and Interfaith Network. Resident artist at Beaconhills College Rob Matheson worked for two months with Beaconhills students, members of the local Uniting Church, the InterFaith Network and Outlook to complete the amazing work depicting threads of fabric that tie the Cardinia community together. It bears symbols that represent the first people and the many faiths in the community. Rev Ann Simons explained that the mural perfectly captured the desire of the Uniting Church in the Main Street of Pakenham to be an image of beauty and hospitality; an artistic presentation of the diversity that makes up the community. CARDINIA Shire has been selected as one of three councils in the metropolitan area to take part in a project encouraging three major community-led projects. The Neighbourhood Project involves 12 months of mentoring, training and funding to empower residents in activating underused locations across the shire into vibrant community spaces. Cardinia Shire Council mayor Jodie Owen said the project
would begin later this month. “The Neighbourhood Project will help us to lead positive and long-term change in our shire to enhance the wellbeing of all our residents, and create more connected, healthy and safe communities,“ she said. “This is a unique opportunity to empower our community to take an active role in shaping our public spaces and support the development of a strong sense of belonging for all members of our diverse and growing
community.“ The project aims to equip the council with new skills and resources to increase collaboration with residents in its approach to creating public spaces. Cardinia CEO Garry McQuillan said the project would give residents the opportunity to identify underutilised public spaces and unlock their potential to better serve the community.

Driver on the skids By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A SOUTH East Skids driver whose club-registered Commodore did circular donuts next to another drifting car and a spectator inside an illegal street skid bowl was put on an 18-month community corrections order. Nicholas Sturzaker, 23, of Narre Warren South, pleaded guilty to two charges of reckless conduct endangering serious injury at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 19 July. Like 30-plus other offenders captured by Operation Regarder, Sturzaker’s driving was captured in hidden video footage at various South East Skids meets at an industrial estate in Licola Crescent, Dandenong South. In footage shown to the court, Sturzaker’s white VL Commodore spun close to the crowd of up to 400 ringing the skid bowl after midnight on 8 December. Within the copious tyre-smoke, an unknown male approached within a metre of the car to film the spectacle. At the same location on 30 December, Sturzaker’s car followed another car into the skid bowl, and performed burnouts and donuts in unison for about a minute. He re-entered the bowl a second time and dropped a burnout thick
with smoke for about a minute while people were attending a damaged vehicle in the bowl. In the process, his rear tyres blew and sparks flew into the crowd, the court was told. He drove back into the bowl minutes later, and performed another burnout. Police intercepted Sturzaker soon after, observing tyre rubber sprayed onto the car’s rear guards, two popped tyres in the boot as well as equipment for changing tyres in the back seat. Sturzaker told the court he had completed a court-ordered safedriving program after being found guilty of previous dangerous driving and loss of traction offences in 2013 and 2014. Defence lawyer Nick Power said Sturzaker, who was diagnosed with ADHD and recently used ice, had been “incredibly” affected by the death of a close friend in a car crash. Unlike many other Operation Regarder offenders, Sturzaker’s car was not forfeited and crushed. Sturzaker had been unable to get the car to police due to it being undriveable. In the meantime, it had been towed away by a local council and was no longer in Sturzaker’s possession, Mr Power said.

The lawyer conceded Sturzaker was “at risk” of being jailed due to his priors. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said Sturzaker endangered people’s safety and lives, but avoided jail due to his young age, early guilty plea and his new-found stability at work and home. “Hopefully, as you get older, you start to engage your brain before you engage another part of your body.” Sturzaker was convicted and ordered to complete 200 hours of unpaid work as part of his communitybased sentence.
He was disqualified from driving for 12 months - on top of a current demerit-point suspension until April. “He needs to grow up and be off the road a significant period,” Mr Vandersteen said. After the hearing, Sturzaker posted on his Facebook page news footage of his case, and added hashtags “STURZYISFREE“ and “STURZYDROPTHECLUTCH“. Sturzaker next appears in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on a driving-while-suspended charge on 1 August.
Starting the conversation is the first step By ALANA MITCHELSON AN OFFICER teenager is part of an eye-opening student summit focused on the complex issues surrounding the modern Middle East, Islamophobia and Muslim extremism. Daanyal Saeed has encouraged students from Year 10 to first-year university to join the conversation with a string of guest speakers at a Modern Middle East summit this weekend. The articulate 17-year-old second-generation immigrant is part of a not-for-profit student organisation called Feel Think Flow that aims to educate young people on global issues. “Young people get pushed out of the political debate so often that you start to feel disenfranchised," Daanyal said. “The idea of this summit is to educate people and empower them in these political discussions." He said the summit would touch on Islamophobia, gender equality, the war on terror and the Islamic Revolution, as well as instances where words have been misappropriated and associated with extremism.
Identifying as a Muslim himself, Daanyal admitted to having faced discrimination first-hand. “Politicians like Donald Trump and Pauline Hanson who use the rhetoric that they do becomes very divisive and it’s not helpful," he said. “I think there’s a facade of tolerance in Australian communities to a point. There’s a long way to go but the rhetoric needs to be shifted. Rather than Muslims and Australians, there needs to be a movement towards Muslims being seen as Australians." There are three guest speakers lined up for the day including Iman Farrar’s talk on radicalisation, Islamic Museum of Australia director Sherene Hassan and a politician. Attendees will then have an opportunity to ask the speakers questions, prompting a panel discussion. An interactive political simulation will follow whereby students are divided into groups representing the views of various parties with invested interests in a particular political scenario. Students will be forced to think outside of their personal beliefs and think about issues in a different way and from varied perspectives.

“Students at the summit will gain an appreciation for politics and its processes, and to develop open minds about both sides of the debate,“ Daanyal said. “It also offers an introduction to key international relations theory and global justice and an opportunity to engage with charities and organisations that work to create social change. “Students also find that you get to meet like-minded people and make friends." Students from Nossal High School, St Margaret’s, Beaconhills,
Berwick Grammar and Berwick High School will be among the 200 students expected at this year’s event. Last year, Feel Think Flow ran their first student summit on refugee policy at the University of Melbourne, which was attended by more than 120 senior school students from across the state. Park help wanted By ALANA MITCHELSON CARDINIA Shire Council is seeking community input to develop a master plan for a new 10-hectare parkland in Officer. Pathways and bridges connecting the recreational parkland to surrounding development and links to local waterways are among the plans for Officer District Park. Cardinia Shire open space team leader Kevin Alexander said the council would work with landscape architecture consultancy Playce to gather ideas from the community before embarking on the design process. “The council is really excited about this master plan. It is the first significant open space plan for this area and will set the tone for the surrounding development. We hope to bring together as many ideas as possible from the community so that the park reflects the needs of both the local and wider shire community," Mr Alexander said. “The master plan may identify opportunities for native and indigenous plant displays, boardwalks, paths and viewing platforms, and informal spaces for play and ‘kick-about’ activities. Mr Alexander said the design was to include barbecues, toilets, shaded areas, car parking and possibly public art. He has encouraged residents to share their thoughts and vote on their favourite ideas at a drop-in session available between 10am and 1pm on Saturday 23 July at the forecourt of the Arena Shopping Centre. The site is to the north-east of the Officer town centre within the Cardinia Road Precinct Structure Plan area of the Casey-Cardinia growth corridor. Satisfaction at a low SURVEY results have revealed an almost 10 per cent decline in community satisfaction in council customer service compared to last year. About 20 per cent of residents surveyed rated Cardinia Shire Council’s customer service poorly, while 62 per cent rated it as 'good’ or very good’. Cardinia Shire mayor Jodie Owen said the council’s results were consistent with the overall state-wide results and replicated 2015’s “strong results" in all key measures. “Overall the results were positive for the council. This shows that council is being seen to be managing its activities and delivering the services needed by its community. We will use these results to continue to improve our services and to review and improve how we interact with the community," Cr Owen said. “Our top three highest performing areas, according to the survey respondents, were waste management, emergency and disaster management, and recreation facilities. “These three areas all involve working closely with our residents and are potentially a point of concern, so it is reassuring to know that our community ranks these services highly." The survey, conducted by JWS Research, sampled 400 randomly selected residents across the shire including users and non-users of council services.

EIGHT years ago Kambrya College was the last school on a parent's list to send their child - now the revolutionised Berwick school can’t cope with enrolment numbers. Since ‘Revolution School’ aired on ABC TV in May this year, Kambrya College’s popularity with the nation and local families has skyrocketed. College principal Michael Muscat said he was in discussions with the Education Department on ways to cope with enrolment interest. “We are really starting to connect with the community and they have given us a vote of confidence,” Mr Muscat said. “We will grow from 1200 students to 1350 next year.” Mr Muscat confirmed changes would have to be made on school grounds to cater for the student boom. “We’ll have to bring in some extra accommodation for students, extra classrooms and employ some more teachers,” Mr Muscat said. Enrolment zoning is also expected to be discussed this month with the Education Department. “I think there is great days ahead for Kambrya College because of the quality of teaching we have here- they are always looking to improve their teaching,” Mr Muscat said. Despite the series capturing enraged parents, fights in the playground and a student being busted with marijuana - the students' triumph won out in the end. The positive feedback for the school, which Mr Muscat said hit “rock bottom” in 2008, had been a wave of excitement for a school which was among one of the most consistently low-performing schools in the state. “We weren’t in control of this film

Cop vehicle rammed By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A MAN who told police he had been using a cocktail of ice, cannabis and heroin on the day of a high-speed police pursuit through Casey’s suburbs has been denied bail. Brian Kessels, 41, unemployed and staying with various friends in Dandenong and Casey, was an unacceptable risk to the community, police told a Dandenong Magistrates’ Court bail hearing on 19 July. He was accused of a spate of offences since August, including two high-speed police pursuits, thefts of a car, number plates and petrol, and a Narre Warren aggravated burglary. In one of the alleged pursuits, police tried to intercept Kessels and a passenger allegedly driving a Commodore with false number plates on The Fairway in Hampton Park about 2.53pm in early July. Kessels allegedly reversed his car into the police vehicle and was
pursued up to 120km/h in a 60 km/h zone as he drove down Pound Road, through a Berwick residential estate and against a red light at around 60 km/h in Beaconsfield. Police abandoned the chase at that stage due to the high danger. Kessels was arrested soon after near the car in a Dan Murphy’s car park in Berwick. In the car was a recently stolen device used for detecting underground fuel tanks. During his police interview, Kessels said he’d used half a gram of meth and half a gram of heroin, as well as cannabis, earlier that day. He was assessed as appearing drug impaired by police, but a blood test wasn’t possible due to his heavy intravenous use, informant Detective Senior Constable Bree Jarvis of Greater Dandenong CIU told the court. Kessels had an extensive history of drug abuse and crime – including
dangerous driving, failing to stop for police, robbery and aggravated burglary priors, she told the court. Kessels was also accused of a 150km/h-plus police pursuit in a car with stolen number plates on Monash Freeway, Hallam, on 14 December. He escaped that day due to police abandoning the pursuit due to having to attend a critical family violence incident, Det Sen Const Jarvis said. During the alleged aggravated burglary on 7 February about 1.50am, two children, aged 2 and 4, were asleep inside the home. Kessels had allegedly broken in through a laundry window and was spotted by a male occupant, still awake watching TV inside the master bedroom. The intruder allegedly said he was “Briza� and was there to see someone called “Sal�.

The resident grabbed Kessels, dragged him out of the house and pinned him on the ground until police arrived. Kessels claimed he had frequently visited the address to visit a “Sal�, though he conceded the yard looked a bit different to Sal’s house. Kessels told the court he had stable accommodation, had been accepted in a CREDIT bail program and complied with parole in the past. He told the court he needed medical attention for a drug problem and a possible cancer diagnosis. “I just want to get back on my medication and I’ll be all right.� Magistrate Julie O’Donnell said she rejected bail because of Kessels’ prior history and the seriousness of the recent allegations. Kessels will next appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 23 August.

NEW gates will be installed to preserve Berwick’s historic Old Cheese Factory arts precinct from unwanted vehicles at night as part of Casey Council’s $2.5 million masterplan. The idea for gates on the two front entrances had been raised during public consultation of the masterplan, a report to the council stated. Other public suggestions included reducing overflow parking on Homestead Road at peak times and dampening noise impacts on neighbours at night.
In response, the council will plant shrubs and trees this financial year to buffer the dust and car headlights. As part of the five-year works, the homestead building, cafe kitchen and outdoor dining area, nursery, gardens and woodworkers buildings will be upgraded. It is investigating a $400,000 modernisation of the Old Cheese Factory function room. Under the plan, there will be interpretative historical displays including links to Aboriginal heritage at the site, enhancing the ite’s Secret Garden and planting a
community garden. During its public exhibition, the council received strong feedback that the area’s heritage should be protected. Its most popular areas were the cafe, playground and garden. Most respondents wanted adequate toilet facilities, more parking and better night lighting – points that are part of the master plan. Federation steps into Monash: Good news that it's been taken over although I was excited about the prospect of it being taken over by Charles Darwin University as was suggested a few months back. They were proposing to offer a full range of courses in Berwick whereas I suspect under Federation, Berwick will remain a smaller campus with limited course offering, the thing that caused the ultimate demise of the campus for Monash. They were never committed to offering a full suite of courses at Berwick as they felt doing so would detract from their other campuses. And again, with this decision to sell to Federation they have made the decision based on their feeling that Federation offers minimal competition. Had they sold to Charles Darwin, they would have sold to a real competitor which may have given them a challenge but would have served Berwick the region, and the current and future students of the area much better. THINGS were pretty different at a Casey Council meeting on 19 July. Channel 9’s A Current Affair film crew was the first with permission to film a council meeting in years - no doubt attracted by recent rate-capping, secret decisions and resident over-charging controversies. It seemed there was a special effort to show off the new, more transparent council. One agenda item was moved out of closed business to be debated in the open. There was even a rush of hands by councillors to second a motion to allow ACA to film the meeting. Outspoken mayor Sam Aziz - never short of a word to some members of the gallery - was a notable apology. After the meeting, ACA interviewed Casey Residents and Ratepayers Association member Brendan Browne and former councillor Paul Richardson on the steps of the civic centre.
However it got some stern rebuffs from two gallery members. One told them “I don’t think you report fairly and responsibly”, another brushed them off with an argument rounded off by a comment that “TV is weird”. Will be interesting to see what story arises.
ANOTHER accused made little attempt to hide the proceeds of crime. The woman had allegedly stolen an airconditioner and clothing from a neighbour’s house, but the game was up when the neighbour spotted the woman wearing the stolen clothes down the street.
A HAPLESS accused in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court seemed to find new ways to plant evidence on himself. The court was told of when the man was pulled over by police and stepped out of his car. Unbeknown to him, the front of his trousers was plastered with empty plastic drugdeal bags. He was also facing charges of breaching an intervention order protecting his partner - who conceived their newly-born child while the accused was prevented from any sort of contact with her.
THE evidence didn’t quite come together so easily for police in another case. A man had been discovered in his bedroom with more than $1000 in cash, a Nutribullet with what was believed to be heroin residue, digital scales and a hydraulic press. The press was believed by police to be used to press pills of heroin with an artificial sweetener filler, but it couldn’t be proven so. As a defence lawyer said, a hydraulic press could be used for anything - and so the relevant charge was dropped.

IN Blind Bight, a flower a day keeps the ambulance at bay. Known to some as the unofficial Mayor of Blind Bight, Bob O’Connell knows his neighbours by nickname and by flower. Bob has managed to walk his dog, keep his “beer belly” down, and check up on his over 65-yearold neighbours with the help of a flower, for around 16 years. To ensure his ageing neighbours, who live alone are safe and well, Bob drops a flower off at their door on his morning walk. “If I don’t see them that’s when I drop the flower,” Bob said. “And if it’s not picked up the next day I’ll knock on their door.” Some days it might just be a sprig of tea-tree, but it’s a message that someone cares, Bob said. “Everyone looks out for one another in small communities, and dropping the flower off is a way of knowing they are alright without being too intrusive,” he said. Data released in August last year, from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW), showed a direct correlation between falls in people over the age of 65. According to the AIHW the most common causes of injury in 2012'13 were falls, at 40 per cent and transport crashes at 12 per cent. During that year over 170,000 people were hospitalised as a result of a fall. Over half the cases were people aged over 65 years, and most people hospitalised for a fall injury in this age group were women. The AIHW also reported an increase in injury hospitalisation, with falls the leading cause.

The Cranbourne West mum, who wishes to remain anonymous, has “no words” for what her life has become after ‘Apex style’ offenders stole her two family cars on Sunday 5 July last year. Thieves broke into Diana’s residence at the time, in Narre Warren North, between 12.30am and 3am, through a locked front door- while her family and two young children were asleep. Diana’s handbag which held two iPads and car keys to her white Subaru Liberty GT Premium and her husband’s Ford Falcon XR6 Turbo were pinched. The Subaru had sentimental personalised number plates, PIPPYD. Which were gifted to her from her grandfather, who passed eight years ago and haven’t been recovered a year on. Police tracked down the Subaru five days after the aggravated burglary and Diana’s husband’s car was also found two days later- badly “banged up”. The family now reside in Cranbourne West but Diana says despite the move, her life remains plagued by the breakin. “The aftermath is terrible. I have to deal with anxiety, something I never had before,” she said. “I now need to see a therapist, I don’t like driving at night and try not to at all expense; I’m also out of pocket, and they simply got a slap on the wrist. SOME very dedicated students from Berwick College have participated in a fundraising activity to help fund research into finding a cure for cancer. The students donated their time and effort to raise money for the Leukaemia Foundation which raises awareness, research, treats and cares for sufferers of leukaemia and other blood related cancers. Students from Team Frost have worked together during Frost Week to achieve a monumental task by chipping away at
the end goal in 30 minute increments. In an activity dubbed Team Frost - Cure de Berwick, students volunteered 30 minutes of their time to ride a stationary bike on a wind trainer and mapped the recorded total distance ridden with the aim of riding the equivalent of a journey around Australia. Frost Assistant Student Learning Leader Deana Mihalos said the Leukaemia Foundation was a natural choice for the recipient of the group’s fundraising efforts. RACISM is often hidden and casual but still happens every day, says Shout Out speaker Asanga Seneviratne. The Endeavour Hills 17-year-old commerce student says he wants to counter “covert racism” even if it is less than when his Sri Lankan parents first moved to Australia in the 1990s. His story is perhaps less dramatic and moving than other Shout Out speakers who have escaped persecution as refugees or asylum seekers, endured horrific violence and at times have faced unfair questions about their legitimacy. But as one of Casey’s many second-generation migrants, there’s still racism and other challenges that need to be faced, he said. Mr Seveviratne recounts an incident where a student of South East Asian background had scooped the medals at his school’s athletic carnival. Behind that champion’s back, other students made comments like “he must have run so fast because he’s black or because “he’s stolen something”. “You pass it off as banter, you don’t take it too seriously but looking back on it, there are repercussions. “If (the person making the comments) is holding these baseless stereotypes, he’s going to start influencing the community. “I think these perspectives can be changed by telling our stories.” In school yards, students grow up and befriend a diversity of cultures but research shows young people are still marginalised due to race, Mr Sen-
eviratne said. Often young people hide their cultural identity to gain acceptance. They may feel a “shame” being the only one eating their culture’s food at school lunch, for instance. Those with exotic names still suffer unspoken discrimination when applying for jobs. Mr Seneviratne passionately believes multiculturalism has made a stronger, vibrant community. “Young people sometimes want to shun their culture but it’s what is so special about Australia. “When you embrace both cultures it’s really beneficial to the community.” Mr Seneviratne is one of a dozen young people who are part of the Shout Out public speaking agency. Formed by the Centre for Multicultural Youth, the agency aims to give a voice to young people and combat negative racial profiling in mainstream media. Speakers can be booked for schools, businesses, local councils and media events. “The idea behind it is young multicultural people have important stories to share to the wider community,” Mr Seneviratne said. In recent coverage of the Apex Gang and associated copy-cat burglaries and carjackings, there was a lack of young voices in the media discussion. “Journalism is quite an important thing in the country to keep the government to account. “Particularly in Apex, the majority of it is young people but we don’t get many young persons’ perspectives in the media.”

Mr Vandersteen ordered the man to undertake a community corrections assessment, including a report on whether more than alcohol lay behind his offending. The man avoided jail because he was very young, had no relevant priors and pleaded guilty, avoiding a lengthy hearing for the complainants. “This is at a high end of seriousness. You violated by touching these women in a way that was uninvited. “There’s no way you’d tolerate that your daughter would be touched this way by another man. “He’s very lucky it’s not a more serious charge.” The man will next appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 5 August.

AN 18-YEAR-OLD man has been told he won’t be jailed after pleading guilty to two assaults on women in their beds after a drunken New Years’ Eve party in Clyde North. About 7.30am on 1 January, the man had entered the neighbour’s home through a broken roller door and knelt beside her as she lay next to her sleeping husband, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court was told. The accused then intimately touched her with his fingers under the bed sheet in what magistrate Jack Vandersteen called a “higher end” sexual assault. “Even in the County Court, that’s a high end sexual assault.” The man sat in court next to his fiance - who was the mother of their nine-month-old daughter. They live with the man’s parents, who have moved from Clyde North since the offences. In a separate incident, about 6am on New Years’ Day, another woman woke to find the accused lying next to her in a “spooning position” with his arm resting underneath her breast. At the time, her intoxicated boyfriend was passed out elsewhere in the house. When she realised the accused wasn’t her boyfriend, she asked: “Who’s this?” The man - who was unknown to her - replied: “Shhh, go back to sleep” and snuggled into her, the court was told. Mr Vandersteen said he was surprised the man was charged with a common law assault, and not a second count of sexual assault, for the latter incident. During the night, revellers had been invited into each other’s houses, the court was told. The man’s lawyer said the party-goers “became friends” and were drinking heavily during the night. Coach courts new talent By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS IT DIDN’T take long for James Kerr to spot the buckets of talent in these Hallam-trained slam-dunking proteges. Two years ago, a group of 16-yearolds needed a coach to play in a Morwell basketball competition and the businessman stepped in. In their latest of a string of titles since, Mr Kerr’s Red Roo Sports under-18s took out a hotly contested South Sudanese Australian National Classic basketball tournament in Werribee against 50 rivals on 8 July. The team included captain Jo Jo Deng, co-captains Michael and Kueth Jok, the tournament’s MVP Golong Golong and the finals MVP Pooch Pooch. The same squad’s under-20s placed third. “These men have overcome so much adversity to understand what it means to become a champion,” Mr Kerr said. Mr Kerr and his Red Roo Sports company have fed and coached up to 18 players without outside funding each Sunday afternoon at Hallam’s 24-7 Hoops. The keen young men - from across Melbourne’s east and south-east - travel hours by sparse and multiple public transport modes to get a run. They are trained under Mr Kerr’s slogan “Excellence over time with discipline equals success”. He tells them what they have to do to be better people. “If you’re in my program, you’re going to have to behave. I don’t have time for your attitude. “If you choose the dark side, then go. I’m about going to the light.” Mr Kerr gained the group’s hardwon trust because of his sincerity and doing “the hard yards” with them for the past two years.
From the start, he drove and picked up players on the way to play in Gippsland each week, and met their families. Hailing from Jackson, Mississippi, Mr Kerr grew up in a population that was 80 per cent African-American. He understands what the maturing boys are going through. He sees their “extremely raw talent”. The boys, many of them 16, first took on adults and won the men’s B grade competition in Morwell. Mr Kerr espouses the value of teamwork - “nothing moves forward without teamwork” - and leadership skills. Mr Kerr said all of the players easily have the talent to play high-school basketball in the US. It just comes down to creating “proper pathways”. Many people talk it but are not providing it, Mr Kerr said. “They’re amazing, and they don’t get the recognition they deserve. “There’s no structure in basketball at schools - it’s just footy.” To travel to the US, they need trusted people to embed them and make them feel at home, Mr Kerr said. “I have them for just two hours a week. I feed them as much chocolate milk and nutrition as I can get,” Mr Kerr says. “Imagine what they can achieve if I had them every day after school, with a full nutritional program, a strength and conditioning program. Expansive new hospital facility WITH the new St John of God Berwick Hospital well underway at Kangan Drive, many are asking how it will affect and benefit them. All of the current services provided at the Gibb Street Hospital, including operating theatres and the maternity, surgical and medical wards, will be relocated to the new hospital once opened in late 2017. Beds in the units will increase to allow care for a growing number of patients. In addition, new services will be launched, including an intensive care unit, cardiac unit and a cardiac/vascular catheter laboratory. Additional operating theatres will be opened, bringing the to-
tal to eight and an increase to six maternity birthing suites. Basement car parking will allow for 350 cars and at the completion of stage 2, the hospital will cater for 210 patient beds. Employment opportunities for 200 new roles will become available in early 2017 in preparation for opening later in the year. A total of 100 new doctors will also be required. “The construction of the new hospital, which is co-located with Monash Health’s Casey hospital, will form part of a major health precinct in Melbourne and take health care in the region to a new level,” St John of God Berwick Hospital CEO Lisa Norman said.

on an outstanding business.” Unfortunately, all of the nominees from the Home-based Business Award were unable to attend the awards night. dine global By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS KATE Sargent isn’t that proud of the cake that snowballed her into a homecooked sweets enterprise. It was a top-deck cake - a vanilla and chocolate sponge with purple icing and flowers - cooked for her daughter’s first birthday. But the offering went down well and stirred Ms Sargent’s dormant passion for baking birthday cakes, cupcakes, cake balls and wedding cakes in her Cranbourne home kitchen. Ms Sargent said she always loved helping in the kitchen as a child, with particular fond memories of the classic Australian Women’s Weekly birthday cake cookbook. “Children’s birthday cakes - that’s where my real passion is, especially for first birthdays and baby showers. “It’s my happy place. It’s just lovely to see the excitement on kids’ faces.” She said she now appreciates the real labour of love that her mother endured to re-create the Women’s Weekly cakes recipes. Requests came from time-poor friends for a variety of fun-themed birthday cakes.

They don’t have the time to organise a party and make the birthday cake as well.” Along the way she has perfected the art of edible, icing figurines and flowers.
She honed her technique at cooking classes and by astutely Googling cake-making videos on YouTube and pictures on Pinterest. Two years ago, her commandingly named home business Sargent Sweetness was officially born. The business name was a “cute play on words” using her married name. It means that if she divorces, she loses her business, Ms Sargent jokes.
She adds that not only is she grateful for the name but also for her husband’s support for the enterprise. The business has gathered steam in the past six months through Facebook and dropping off business cards around the region. Ms Sargent is also gaining a profile with her chocolate-coated cake balls - sometimes with a shot of salted caramel - at the monthly night market
at Lynbrook Community Centre, and the recent decadent dessert-fest Winter Treats in Berwick. The next Lynbrook market, with children’s activities, teppanyaki and door prizes, is on 22 July, 5.30-9pm. Her chocolate-coated cake balls with a flavour shot of salted caramel went down a treat at the Winter Treats event in Berwick recently.

THE Pakenham Warriors’ Youth League Men’s Division 2 side bounced back from a sluggish start to its clash with the Mildura Heat at Cardinia Life on Saturday night, ultimately dismantling the severely undermanned visitors by 34 in the Big V basketball clash 81-47. Despite only having six available players in uniform for the game, the Heat trailed by just a point at quarter-time. Jay Madigan showed plenty early for the visitors, while it was the Warriors who seemed to lack any real spark outside of three impressive dunks from big man Lewis Newman. Coach Simo Pajdic delivered an almighty rev-up to his Warriors early in the second, and it had the desired effect - jolting them to life in an emphatic close to the opening half. Pakenham led 41-19 at halftime and refused to let the foot off the pedal in the final two quarters. Newman led the way for the
home side with 14 points and 8 boards, while the Jenkinson boys - Aidan and Dylan - also impressed. Jeff Reid’s Division 2 men returned from their northern swing to Albury empty-handed, despite a fast start against the North East Bushrangers on Saturday afternoon. The Warriors opened with a 26-19 lead at the end of the first quarter - courtesy of an impressive 53 per cent shooting from the field. They maintained a six-point advantage, 48-42, at the half and doubled that by the end of the third, but faded badly in the last - outscored 32-17 - to ultimately lose by three, 94-91. The Bushrangers shot a staggering 76 per cent from the field in the last, missing just four shots for the entire quarter, while in stark contrast the Warriors drained just seven of their final quarter attempts. Lloyd Wright was the chief destroyer for the North East, finishing with 28 points on 10 of 14
shooting including a lethal five of six from beyond the arc. Dylan Webb was equally as damaging - finishing with a 22-point, 11-rebound double-double on 53 per cent from the field. Pakenham, meanwhile, was led by Ben Gaze’s 24 points on 59 per cent shooting, 18 points from guard Josh Smith and 6 points and 14 boards from import big man Kenneth Hall. With the result, Pakenham sits in fourth place on the ladder but tied for Coburg in third with 11 wins and five losses from their first 16 games. Mornington is just one win ahead in second. Earlier in the day on Saturday, the North East comprehensively had the better of the Warriors’ Big V women’s side - to the tune of 41 points, 74-33. Darren Thomas’ side hosts Blackburn from 7pm this Saturday at Cardinia Life, with Pajdic’s boys hosting Melton in the earlier game from 5pm. Reid’s Division 2 men head to Mornington to take on the Breakers from 2pm on Sunday.

By RUSSELL BENNETT A JAWDROPPING piece of athleticism from star import quarterback Kevin Russell highlighted yet another convincing win by the Pakenham Silverbacks in Gridiron Victoria’s Division 2 competition on the weekend. The Silverbacks - the reigning champions of the division went into their game against the Northern Raiders at DR Atkinson Reserve on Saturday night minus a host of key players, including captain Paul Ballinger and linemen Brandon Tonks, Dillon Hughes and Fosio Dunlop. Mel Martin’s side subsequently started slowly with the Raiders showcasing a new defensive scheme that caught the Silverbacks’ offense off-guard - forcing its first series to end with a punt for the first time since their opening game. The defence, which has sensationally only given up nine points through the first five games, came out as hard as ever but a few penalties kept the sideline anxious. Some disjointed play continued until Russell produced a play that almost had to be seen to be believed. Mobile phones and cameras at the ground captured the play, which has since done the rounds on social media. On an inside read, Russell jumped six feet in the air, flying over a Raiders’ defensive back and into the endzone for a touchdown.

Battle for top spot By DAVID NAGEL A NEW complexion could be thrown over the South East Football Netball League on Saturday when Narre Warren host Berwick in a classic topof-the-table clash at Kalora Park. Top spot goes on the line as the intriguing Magpies face the proven reigning premiers in a perfect litmus test just five weeks out from this year’s finals series. And if the Magpies win -we’ve got a completely different ball game on our hands. Most pre-season predictions had Berwick way out in front, Cranbourne chasing, with the Magpies expected to take time to find their feet with so many new faces at the arrival desk. Big-name recruiting at both Doveton and Pakenham had the Magpies locked in for fourth or fifth on the ladder, but they’ve surprised many. That includes the leader of this week’s opponent, Berwick coach Rhys Nisbet. “Am I surprised, yeah probably because they’ve had such a high turnover of players, but they’re a great club Narre Warren,” Nisbet said.
“Sometimes a fresh voice, some fresh ideas, can really bond a group together and it seems to be the case with them this year.” The Magpies lost their opening game of the season, by a point to Doveton, but have since won nine of their 10, with their only loss to the Wickers by 39 points at Edwin Flack Reserve in round seven. On that occasion, it was a seven-goal haul to Mitchell Johnson that made the difference, slipping under Heath Black’s guard after three weeks in the reserves. But Black has his own issues this week, with star full-forward Darren Sheen to miss with an untimely groin injury and several others under injury clouds after a horror round 12 before last week’s bye. Expect players like Michael Collins, Col McNamara, Josh Tonna and Dylan Quirk to really lift for this one. They don’t like Berwick and would hate nothing more than handing over the title of “the last team to win back-to-back premierships” at the end of the season. And a win on Saturday will go a long way to-
wards avoiding that handover. The Magpies will come close, but in the end it will be Berwick’s ability to make the most of its chances -Ben Kearns and Tim Gunn in particularthat will be the key factor, come the final siren. It’s the Wickers to cement top spot with a 14-point triumph. Pakenham midfielder Russell Lehman provided the highlight of a lopsided round 13 on Saturday, kicking eight goals in the Lions 80-point victory over Hampton Park at Robert Booth Reserve. WHILE the cat’s away - the mice will play. Reigning premier and back-to-back fancy Narre Warren had the bye on Saturday allowing its main challengers to take centre stage in the South East Football Netball League. Beaconsfield was forced to battle hard against Berwick, Hampton Park and Doveton to build their percentage, while Cranbourne finally got rewarded for a solid recent run of form by sneaking into the top five for the first time this season. Of the contenders -only Tooradin took a backward step. It took Cranbourne until the final two minutes of play to finally roll over ROC, the Eagles coming from three goals down in the dying stages to keep their finals hopes alive. Cranbourne’s persistence paid off when it mattered most. Tara Cecil (goal keeper) and Sharni Lambden (goal defence) began to intercept and block shots, while at the opposite end of the court Alanah Hardy (goal shooter) and Tegan Stahl (goal attack) just couldn’t miss. Beaconsfield took the four points but looked a little scratchy in its seven-goal, 42-35, victory over a brave Berwick at Holm Park Reserve. Scores were locked at half time before the Eagles kicked into gear in the second half. Bianca Sanzaro (GS) had the hot hand in the third quarter, before handing over to Andi Dickson (GA)
who finished off the job for the second-placed Eagles. Amanda Goodie (GA), Sarah McDermott (wing attack) and Emily LaRoche (wing defence) were brilliant for the Wickers in the first half. Doveton made the biggest statement of the weekend, doubling Tooradin’s score with a crushing 70-35 victory at Robinson Reserve. The Doves had a bright new look, with star goaler Rahni Samason (GS) joined by Sam Gabriel (GA) in the attacking ring, causing the Seagulls all sorts of headaches down back. Samason had 37 goals to three-quarter time before handing over to Gabriel who shot 15 in the final term. Bree Miller (WD) played a sensational second half for the Doves, while Cara Humbert and Liz Edwards were typically frugal in defence. Tara Smith (WA) and Shona Wells (centre) tried hard to stop the Doves’ flow in the second half. And Hampton Park also gave its percentage a healthy boost, consolidating third spot on the ladder with a 65-32 victory over Pakenham. The Redbacks were super-consistent all day, scoring 17, 15, 17 and 16 goals in each term, with Brooke Kiely (GS) scoring 42 to do the majority of the damage. Natu Fahnana (WA) and Rania Waller (GD) were also outstanding for the winners, who face Beaconsfield in a real season-definer at Holm Park Reserve this Saturday.

Rough roads, no rumble By EWAN KENNEDY WE HAVE spent an excellent week behind the wheel of a Forester tS in our home area in south east Queensland. Some 22 changes are made to the standard Forester XT Premium as it moves along the assembly line. It’s then transported to the STI (Subaru Technica International) highperformance division where a further 28 items are installed. Despite the use of a chequered flag on the tS badge, this Forester is aimed more at the grand touring (GT) market rather than those looking for a track day machine. Other than the standout black grille and deep STI spoiler, body changes are relatively subtle. The suspension has been lowered by 15 mm to improve looks and enhance handling, obviously off-road ability suffers. A new design STI Enkei 19-inch alloys have 245/45 19 Bridgestone tyres. It’s interesting to see that Subaru has gone trendy in using a lower-case initial for the model name. The tS sort of stands for ‘tough Speedy’. The interior features black leather and suede trim seats with red stitched accents. The front seats have STI embroidered badges. The leather trimmed steering wheel also has an STI logo. Unlike the Forester XT Premium on which it is based the tS doesn’t have a sunroof.

A major restyle of the Forester XT Premium, the Forester tS Special Edition sits lower and rides on STI Enkei 19-inch alloys. Forester tS Special Edition is powered by a warmed-up turbo-petrol 2.0-litre boxer engine producing 177 kW at 5600 rpm. Torque is 350 Nm. All Australian Forester tS Special Editions use Subaru’s continuously variable transmission (CVT) with manual overrides. No six-speed manual transmissions will be imported, though there has to be the possibility of some grey imports
being sneaked in somewhere down the track. Given Subaru Australia’s long-term emphasis on safety it comes as no surprise that the Forester XT range has been given a five-star rating by ANCAP. Our on-road driving of the Forester tS was done on one of our favourite road programs in the hinterland behind the Gold Coast.
With bumps, cracked surfaces and broken edges it’s similar to many country roads in the coastal regions of Australia. Despite everything the roads through at the tS is breezed through the tests. Forester tS has handling that’s competent for a tuned SUV, though you wouldn’t call it a sports wagon. It has precise turn-in and good feedback through the steering wheel.
Brembo brakes, four-pot front and two-pot rear have immense stopping power. The 45 per cent profile looks good and doesn’t destroy ride comfort the way lower-profile tyres can do. As a result comfort is pretty good. The front seats support well, the rear seat has plenty of legroom and four adults can all ride in stretch out comfort. There’s space in the rear for three kids up to their early-teen years. Three colours are imported, WR Blue, White and Black. Ours was a black one and we suspect the WR Blues have already been snapped up on pre-orders. Only 300 Forester tS Special Editions were allocated to Australia and they are running out fast.
