Brightest sparks By ALANA MITCHELSON A PAKENHAM sports club has become one of the first sites in the country to have the latest technology in solar batteries installed at its facilities. Pakenham Bowls Club has had the foresight to install a ‘super’ solar battery pack to save on energy expenses in the long-term. The $34,000 battery pack was funded evenly between the bowls club’s fund-raising kitty and a Cardinia Shire Council’s community capital works grant. President Terry McRedmond said the club has had an environmental mindset for some time. For the past eight years the club has
collected and stored water used to water its grounds and pumps water into clubrooms for toilet usage. The club also installed 60 solar panels in September last year, but on sunny days were found to generate more power than could be used. “We had been paying $1200 a month for electricity and since having the solar panels installed, it’s cut our bill in half,” Mr McRedmond said. “The idea was to get a battery unit that would store excess power and is believed to be able to keep the club self-sufficient for at least seven months of the year.“ The battery pack was installed on Monday 11 July with mayor Jodie
Owen doing the honours of flicking on the power switch. Cardinia Shire environment officer Brett Munckton said it was the first council building in the shire to make the switch to battery and solar power. “It’s a lithium-ion next-generation battery that’s highly efficient, much safer and lasts longer. It’s also a lot more compact,” Mr Munckton said. “It provides about 10 kilowatts of energy to the site. It stops feeding excess energy and instead stores it for other use. “Council is keen to learn from this project to see how this technology can be used at other sites to benefit the community.”

Antique cash flow By ANEEKA SIMONIS UP TO 1000 people are expected to peruse the best of the best antiques at an upcoming charity fair in Pakenham. Now in its 13th year, the Antique and Collectables Fair held at the Cardinia Cultural Centre on Saturday 23 July hopes to raise $6000 for the crisis centre, 4Cs. Up to 45 stallholders will have everything from rustic goods, to restored clocks and silverware on display for the event which also features a valuation service for local collectors. The fair will run from 9am until 4pm, with antique expert and qualified valuer and auctioneer David Freeman on hand to price items (except jewellery, coins and stamps) for $5 per item from 1pm. Collectors are advised to bring a photo of larger items for valuation. Organiser Peter James said up to 1000 people have attended the collectable fair in previous years, and expects the same numbers this year. “It’s very well attended. The

Top coach feels ‘shafted’ By RUSSELL BENNETT ONE of the highest qualified tennis coaches in the state says the sport in the local area has been “sent back a decade” and he feels “shafted” by the decision to remove him and his coaching programs from the Pakenham Regional Tennis Centre (PRTC). Paul Osborne, who owns and operates ‘Ossie’s Tennis Coaching’, has been coaching at the PRTC since 2010 - a move he said was a ‘win/win/win’ for his own business, the local tennis community, and the tennis centre. On 1 July this year, Aligned Leisure took over the running and management of the PRTC and Mr Osborne applied to be the head coach and manager in order to have everything under the one umbrella. He said he even offered to sell his own business to Aligned or Cardinia Shire Council so that he could continue at the PRTC. But he said he received an email from Aligned saying they were now after ‘a fresh start’ when it came to the running of, and coaching at the facility. As a consequence there are now 300 local children and five coaches each week who will no longer be involved with the OTC programs at the PRTC. Mr Osborne said the centre was a commercial tennis centre, not a club, and would become the ‘white elephant’ he says it was prior to 2010. He has been with the Pakenham Tennis Club on Anderson Street since 1996, but moved to the PRTC in 2010

due to the overwhelming demand for court space. The PRTC has 18 plexicushion courts, while the Pakenham Tennis Club has six synthetic grass courts. Now he says the youngsters he coaches are now forced back to Anderson Street - on just four courts, given the other demands on them through the club. “I feel shafted by Tennis Victoria, Cardinia Shire Council and Aligned
Leisure,” he said, adding “It’s a business decision that I have to accept”. Mr Osborne said the move sent the local tennis scene back a decade and he predicted “a tough six months” for the sport locally. He said he had retained “100 per cent” of his clients since being removed from the PRTC, and that the father of one young player who used to be based with him there had since ripped up his
membership of the Richmond Football Club - which owns Aligned. He said others who attend the Cardinia Life gym were prepared to do the same, adding that “there are people who live 30 metres from the PRTC who will go to the Pakenham Tennis Club instead”. Mr Osborne said he had been forced into being a direct competitor of the PRTC now, but still aimed to run the
centre in the future and was adamant he would get it operating at a profit in year one. Cardinia Shire Council’s team leader of recreation and facilities Heather Callahan said Aligned had outlined its plans to run its own programs at the PRTC, which included coaching, school participation and social programs. “Importantly, the programs proposed by Aligned Leisure were fully supported by Australia’s peak tennis body, Tennis Australia,” she said. “The proposed program in fact exceeded Tennis Australia requirements, reassuring council as to the scope and quality of the future program.” Ms Callahan said Aligned had appointed an “experienced tennis professional” who would start work at the PRTC from 18 July and would immediately start recruiting other qualified coaches for the facility. Tara Hetherington is a parent of children coached by OTC. “I cannot begin to tell you how disappointing it was to receive Paul’s email, stating that he would no longer be able to conduct his coaching business at PRTC,” she said. “Paul (and his staff) are an integral part of tennis in the Pakenham and surrounding areas. He is a dedicated and committed coach whose passion for tennis and encouraging children to play and, more importantly, enjoy and love the sport, is second to none.”

Eight years on ‘ice’ By GEORGIA WESTGARTH WHEN Jarryd Bardsley looked back on his eightyear drug addiction, he admitted sitting alone on his bedroom floor smoking ice as one of his lowest points. The 26-year-old concreter from Cranbourne, smoked a gram a day, at the height of his addiction. “Ice gives you a buzz like nothing else out there,” he told the News. “You’re on a heightened alertness when you’re on it, I felt like I was someone different when I smoked ice – I didn’t speak to anyone, not even my mum, I just wasn’t me. “It’s a worse you for sure when you’re on ice, you lose all judgement of what’s wrong and right and you don’t think things are as bad as what they are.” “Ice is massive – it’s by far one of the biggest drugs. “It’s more addictive than other drugs that I’ve tried, you get that feeling that you just want more, enough is never enough.” Jarryd has been clean from drugs for close to four months and attributes his new found attitude to Glenn Munso’s Youth YOU drug rehabilitation program and gym in Hallam. A former drug dealer and addict himself, Glenn “gets it”, Jarryd said. A gram a day “is a lot”, he said, adding that ice or crystal methamphetamine isn’t as cheap as people make it out to be. “$500 would last me a week, that’s enough for four people for one whole week that don’t do it very often, and I was having that in one week to myself.” Jarryd dropped down to 70 kilograms, but now sits at a healthy 84 kilograms. “You can go days without eating,” he said. “You just don’t have an appetite when you’re on ice.” After dabbling in marijuana and speed, Jarryd said ice was the hardest drug he’d tried and hopefully would be the last. Jarryd started playing around with illegal drugs at 18 years of age, after he left high school in Frankston at 17 years.

Eight years later, Jarryd said hypnotherapy, counselling and Narcotics Anonymous didn’t stop the paralysing urge for another hit. “When it comes to relapsing it could be something as simple as being in my room and getting that craving to do it because that’s where I used to smoke,” Jarryd said. Jarryd relapsed every time he tried to quit ice, despite owing dealers money – and the dealers added up. Jarryd owed cash to about 15 dealers over his eight year drug habit, something he dabbled in himself. “I was a dealer and a user.” “My bank balance went into negative, I never used credit cards, I was just in debt with drug dealers, but it’s a worry when they aren’t your mates,” he said. A week in the life of Jarryd just a few months ago shows the strong hold of addiction. “I’ve been through more jobs than dealers,” he said.
“You become unreliable, because you don’t sleep for so long you struggle to get up every morning and get to work.” But the number of functioning addicts working in trades is staggering, Jarryd pointed out. “Ice is massive in trades – especially concreting, there’s so many.” But the cycle of a functioning drug addict like Jarryd can mean hitting rock bottom before picking up the pieces. “It gets to an extent where once you do it every day for a long period of time you become a bit oblivious to your mistakes, you think you are working quick but you’re really not,” he said. Jarryd’s weekly cycle with drugs would go like this: “It would start sometimes on Thursdays and then I’d smoke Friday and stay up all weekend on a bender, I’d stay up Sunday and go to work Monday and you’d feel like s*** on Tuesday,” he said. So Tuesday would become the crux of the addiction. Jarryd couldn’t get through the week without smoking ice again on Tuesday. “It’s about getting through the day, Tuesdays are the day you’re not feeling so good, so you’d
smoke and before you know it it’s Thursday again and the weekend starts,” he said. “Your body is so sleep deprived on ice and coming off it is horrible, it’s the worst pain, I wouldn’t wish it upon anybody.” But Jarryd hid his pain so well that it wasn’t until his mum opened his laptop and read his desktop screen saver that was the moment that would literally save Jarryd from crystal meth. The poem called, ‘I am crystal meth’, retells how the drug destroys the lives that use it and it wasn’t easy for Jarryd to quit. His mum Karen kicked him out of home before she found Glenn’s program. “I was six days clean when mum walked me in here (Glenn’s gym) for the first time,” Jarryd said. Now on his way to his first Christmas free of drugs in eight years, Jarryd walks into Essential Health and Fitness six days a week. “Subconsciously I really didn’t want mum to find out about my drug habit, but looking back I’m glad she did, she’s helped me so much,” Jarryd said. Currently working in a job he’s had for a few weeks and aims to keep, Jarryd is completing a course in personal training and says he has no time to relapse. “I’m not worried about relapsing because I don’t think about it,” he said. “I know if I stick to my routine of work, gym and bed, I have no time to relapse – routine keeps my head in the right place.” Jarryd is now debt free, but most importantly drug free, and has a message for everyone. “It’s a dark place – don’t do it to yourself and your family because it’s not that easy to just switch off drugs.”

because they feel like they’re going to judge them on their parenting skills – this way they can learn and talk to me online and no-one needs to know about it.� Glenn’s program has been running since 2014 and has helped addicts as young as 13 years old, to 28. The user-pays online support group costs $17 per week and includes weekly videos, lessons and live question and answer sessions from Glenn. But Glenn said one of the most important aspects of the support group was exactly that, support from other parents living the same battles. “The live question and answers work well for the parents who don’t attend live forums and suffer with
judgement, it’s a private way of asking questions,� Glenn said. The tutorials with Glenn touch on how to react to your child and communicate with them without giving off an anxious energy which can result in the child rebelling. Glenn said his program helped to rebuild relationships between drug addicted youths and their loved ones. It continues to “stop and save fights� between the two parties. “Parents message me with different situations and I tell them what to focus on to get the best results,� Glenn said. They lose friends, they get depressed and anxious and it isolates them. “They can’t talk to other parents

GLENN Munso, a former drug dealer and addict, is using his past life to save families cracking under the “ice epidemic�. That’s what he calls it – an “epidemic� – so far-reaching that kids, users, and addicts are driving across Melbourne to attend his Hallam gym in the hope of beating drugs. Glenn, a 29-year-old personal trainer and creator of the Youth YOU Program in Hallam, said people drove from Essendon and Melton to attend his sessions in drug rehabilitation. But it was the helplessness he felt from parents and loved ones of addicts, that pushed him to take action outside of the individuals’ own battles. “Parents literally put their entire lives on hold when they have a child on drugs – it’s just a vicious cycle,� Glenn explained. “But I can give parents insight into what it’s like to be that kid on drugs and I find they appreciate that.� With a background firmly planted in the illegal drug scene, Glenn says he can insightfully educate parents in ways no other youth or support worker can, and has created an online portal to help more families than he ever could have hoped to meet in his gym. “It’s an online support program for anyone dealing with a loved one on drugs,� Glenn said. An online toolkit similar to Glenn’s was recommended to support families and communities in the 2015 National Ice Taskforce – Glenn’s Youth YOU Online Support Group started up in June this year. Just not right POWERLESS, furious and frustrated. These are the feelings of almost every resident in Bronson Circuit, Hawkshead Place and Danby Court in Cranbourne North after months of attempts to stop over-development in a quiet part of Casey. Most Casey residents would be completely unaware that if the area they live in is under a “Development Plan Overlay” or DPO, they have almost no rights over what gets built right next door. The case in point here is two ‘remnant’ blocks, one at 179 Rosebank Drive (eight units) and the other at 515 Narre Warren Road (10 units). Leftover farmhouses, these are now being turned into multi-unit developments, pouring traffic onto quiet residential streets where normally there is just one house per block. Together these 18 residences, ranging from two-bedroom units to four-bedroom twostorey townhouses, will add hundreds of car trips per day down quiet streets that are narrow and already struggling to cope with cars parking on the roadside. Casey Council themselves can do nothing, except deny a permit application and then have this decision overturned by the allpowerful VCAT, sitting in an ivory tower in Melbourne. We don’t object to development as such, but how much is too much? Four homes would have sufficed on one block, but 10? Almost every resident in the affected streets, 45 in all, signed a joint letter to council objecting. All credit to Cr Amanda Stapledon who fought long and hard to have the council reject the application and tried to have Vicroads consider other access options. But all to no avail, because under the DPO, and against VCAT, we the people are powerless. Now we are also furious and frustrated. Be aware, your street could be next. Rob Ward, Cranbourne North.

Poverty is no bonus AND education is well known to be the path out of poverty. Ms Petrides articulates very well the plight of families experiencing financial hardship in Casey. Likewise we see many families that are not able to afford the costs of their children’s public education program. Students are forced to elect cheaper subjects, they go to school without the resources they need and miss out on social development opportunities such as camps. My concern is that once bank interest rates rise, we are going to see a lot more families doing it tough and a lot more kids missing out. It’s None Of Our Business But ... WILL it snow in Cranbourne? Network Seven’s meteorologist Jane Bunn seems to think so and local singer songwriter Sharon Start says if it does it will be history repeating itself. Ms Start, a long-term Cranbourne West resident, has had the pleasure of witnessing snowfall in Cranbourne and is crossing her fingers she’ll witness it one more time. “Thirty years ago we awoke to snow in Cranbourne, so it would be good to see it again after all this time,” Ms Start wrote on Facebook. Jane Bunn posted a list online of Victorian suburbs likely to wake up to a white winter wonderland on Wednesday 13 July and Cranbourne South was on her list. Ms Start told the News it was about this time in 1986 that she ran for her camera to capture her son in the snow. “We were up early to get my four-year-old son to kindergarten and as we walked to the car we thought at first it was frost on the ground,” she said. “But it was shaped differently and that is when we realised it was snow. “I grabbed my camera and took a photo of my son quickly before we headed off to kindergarten. “My son is now 34 and when I mentioned the possibility of snow he said he vaguely remembered when it snowed all those years ago.” Send us your show photos to dailyeditor@ starnewsgroup.com.au.

IT WAS a double case of doing a double-take when a man locked in police cells was brought into the wrong Dandenong Magistrates’ courtroom not once but twice on 11 July. The man seemed to have been quite the social butterfly in custody. As he was erroneously led out into the dock, he recognised the accused standing in front of judge, called out
to the accused by name and wished him luck in his case. Not that the judge was impressed. He scolded the accused for starting to make a name for himself in the criminal world. “How many people have people come out of the cells and say ‘G’day! Good luck!’” the magistrate said. “It’s all about who you know.”

Court tears A NARRE Warren man has been remanded on eight charges of holding up shop staff at knifepoint in Melbourne’s south-east in June. Sean Peter O’Toole, 26, appeared briefly via video link in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 11 July, and did not apply for bail. He had been remanded in custody since being arrested two weekends earlier. “I love you, Mum,” he sobbed to relatives in the court gallery. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen noted O’Toole had been on bail during several of the offences, as well as a community corrections order. O’Toole was accused of an armed robbery of a Narre Warren servo on 7 June, stealing $170 cash and a packet of
Winfield cigarettes. He was also charged over an armed robbery of $300 from a Clayton tobacconist on 24 June, $100 from a Pakenham servo as well as $60 from a person on 27 June. The other alleged armed robberies involved $300 from a Springvale grocery store on 27 June, $150 from a person in Springvale on 28 June, $650 from a Springvale clothes shop on 29 June, and $200 from a Hawthorn tobacconist on 30 June. O’Toole was charged with attempted armed robberies at Springvale on 27 June and Hawthorn on 30 June. He was also charged with a Noble Park burglary on 7 April, allegedly stealing cash, jewellery and bank cards valued at $1020. The accused allegedly used a bank card not belonging to
him to dishonestly buy $59 of items at Coles in Noble Park that day. He also allegedly stole $2800 of jewellery and a digital camera in a Narre Warren burglary in April, and destroyed a window in Hampton Park in May. O’Toole was also charged with speeding at 113 km/h in an 80 km/h zone as well as two counts of driving unlicensed and a single count of driving an unregistered vehicle. He was set to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court for a filing hearing over the alleged armed robberies on 12 July. He will appear on the other charges, including possession of methamphetamine and breaching a corrections order, at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 11 August.

By GEORGIA WESTGARTH THE CITY of Casey wants its ratepayers to compost, and its offering a new rebate program to entice residents to buy bins, fermenters and even worm farms and worms. The ‘Composting in Casey Rebate Program’ offers a claim back of $30 from the purchase of a compost bin, $40 for compost fermenters and $50 on worms and worm farms. Casey mayor Sam Aziz said that on average food waste made up 50 per cent of Casey rubbish bins, which ended up in
landfill and led to greenhouse gas emissions. “By composting at home, residents have the opportunity to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill while producing a nutrient-rich soil product without artificial fertilisers that is great for your garden,” Cr Aziz said. To help engage residents in the council-run rebate, two free education sessions will be run by the City of Casey this year on how to get the most out of composting. “This rebate program and education sessions are a great opportunity for residents to get
on board with composting and have a positive effect on the environment,” Cr Aziz said. A session will be held at Myuna Farm on Saturday 30 July, from 9am to 10.30am, and Monday 7 November, 6.30pm to 8pm, at the council offices in Narre Warren. Bookings for both of these sessions can be made through City of Casey customer service on 9705 5200. The rebate offer is limited to one rebate per residential property per year. By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS IT was a bit of a home-coming for former Berwick Primary School student and Rio Paralympian Emma Booth. The 25-year-old equestrian rider popped in and took a wide range of questions from the school’s holiday program kids on 7 July. And on the way, she re-united with her former Year 6 teacher Andrew Horsburgh. Mr Horsburgh, now assistant principal, said it was inspiring how Ms Booth had bounced back from a horrific head-on crash between her car and a jack-knifed truck in 2013. He remembered Ms Booth as “a bit of a pocket rocket” as a student at the school. “She was quite short among quite a few burly boys. She stood up pretty well to them. “She had a bit of spunk about her.” Mr Horsburgh recalled the young Ms Booth’s early love of horses and being crowned as a pony club’s champion when she was in Year 5. “I hadn’t seen her since she left the school. It was fantastic to see her again,” Mr Horsburgh said. Ms Booth, a former house vice-captain at the school, fielded a range of questions from nearly 50 inquisitive children and stayed back to catch up with old faces. The kids wanted to know about
Lucy Nolan, Emma Booth, Andrew Horsburgh and Angus Crouch, front. 156423 the accident, how she cared for her horses, and how she’d recovered so powerfully. “They were really curious,” Mr Horsburgh said. “Quite thoughtful questions from quite a range of kids.” As is now folk-lore, Ms Booth had been travelling home from an equestrian event in Albury when the crash happened. She was rushed to hospital in a critical condition after
it took two hours to cut her from the wreck. In hospital, she woke up with a tube down her throat to help her to breathe, unable to talk and unable to feel her legs. After spending four months in hospital and another six months of physiotherapy, Ms Booth had to learn a new way to ride a horse. Her first competition ride after the crash was in early 2014.

She is now ranked No.1 in Australia in para-equestrian riding, and is Rio Olympics-bound. Close family members will make the trip to Brazil to cheer her on. “You feel that sense of pride, and then you hear about how excited she is about going and how passionate she is about horses,” Mr Horsburgh said. “She was a real inspiration.”

Life after ‘Apex’ strike By GEORGIA WESTGARTH THE minute Sharon Stewart tells an insurance company she has made a claim “recently” her quote increases around $700. Ms Stewart had her Ford Territory Turbo stolen from her “quiet” Narre Warren court on Sunday 1 May by a pack of young thieves. Her children now jump at every sound they hear around their home, Ms Stewart told the News. As far as she’s concerned “Apex” or their copycat offenders have left her family $6,000 out of pocket. “We had that car for 10 years, it was in perfect nick and had only done 130,000 kilometres - the payout we got wasn’t going to cover it, our car was rare,” Ms Stewart said. The Stewarts replaced their Territory Turbo with another standard Ford Territory, but Ms Stewart says: “it’s not the same - I loved that car.” As home invasions skyrocket around Casey and the state, Ms Stewart’s story is one echoed throughout the outer south-east region. Burglary and break and enters are up more than 38 per cent on last year. And figures from insurance provider RACV also show a spike in claims for burglary. The City of Casey sits at number five in the top 10 local government areas to claim for burglary in 2014 and 2015. Brimbank topped RACV’s list with 291 claims last year, while Casey residents claimed 138 times - down on 2014 with 151 claims made to RACV that year. RACV Insurance Acting General Manager, Mark Geraghty said that overall there was a two per cent rise in the number of burglaries across the state, while the total cost of claims rose 12 per cent to more than $13 million. Mr Geraghty said burglaries accounted for the third highest number of home insurance claims, after storms and water damage, and advised residents to exercise extra vigilance in the remaining winter months. “Burglars are opportunistic and strike wherever they see vulnerability. “It was literally full of rubbish, choc-a-block full of junk, there was a petrol tank left inside with petrol inside it, people’s car registration service books and car manuals from five different cars and lots of pairs of sunglasses.” Ms Stewart believes the thieves used her car as a dumping ground for all the items they had collected from other stolen cars. Ms Stewart and her husband Gary were able to return one voucher of $300 found in their trashed car to its original owner. “I called the company and used the reference number to get it back to the person who bought it,” she said.

POKEMON Go has taken over the world- and Berwick is no exception. The phone app dubbed a type of ‘augmented reality’ is a trailblazer in the smart phone gaming sphere, and has added $7.5 billion to Nintendo’s market value since it hit the Appstore just last week. And its popularity has struck an Emerald bus shelter, which is due to be demolished, with gamers using the shelter as a ‘Pokestop’ to catch the beloved Japanese creatures. An Emerald gamer said that “the effect of removing the shelter would be felt by Pokemon trainers everwhere“. Down the road in Berwick, the Pokemon phenomenon has even captured the attention of police. A Berwick homeowner, who wishes to remain anonymous in fear more gamers will swarm to their street if their name and address is revealed, has told the News suspicious driving in their neighbourhood wasn’t so suspicious after all. “Police were called to a house in Berwick following reports of a car seen acting suspiciously,” they said. The number plate was taken down, and this led to a young female driver being quizzed. “When questioned, she disclosed that she had been driving her sisters around town looking for Pokemons. “They’d been hovering in an area trying to capture their prey- police accepted their story.” Acting Sargeant Frank Ellesley, from the Casey Highway Patrol said he wasn’t familiar with this case but such driving could be considered careless. “We look at each individual circumstance, but someone driving considerably slow under the speed limit could be issued with a ticket for ca-

Convicted for hugging By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A MAN has assaulted a cleaner at the Berwick train station by “hugging” her and kissing her face several times in “slobbery” fashion at night last August. Sean Harris, 32, pleaded guilty to assault, possessing ice and failing to answer bail after a charge of indecent assault was withdrawn by police at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 11 July. Harris approached the cleaner about 10pm on 17 August and tried to take hold of her cleaning trolley. He was spoken to by PSOs and retreated to a bus stop with a male friend. Half an hour later, he returned and grabbed the cleaner “holding her with both arms in a hugging motion” for about 30 seconds, the court was told. While holding her, Harris kissed her forehead, and thrice
kissed her right cheek. The cleaner, who struggled to break free, later described the kisses as “really slobbery”. Harris then unbuttoned his shirt and lifted it up, telling her: “I’m 31. Look at my body.” He told her repeatedly she liked his body, and then left the station on the next bus. Harris’ defence lawyer said it was conceded that it was an “unpleasant and horrible experience” for the cleaner, but denied there was a sexual motivation. “She believes the person is intoxicated and it was in the presence of a male friend. “I say this is an isolated, one-off incident ... in which he voluntarily leaves after engaging in that behaviour.” The court was told Harris had been placed on a good behaviour bond in 2015, which
involved an incident with another person in “very different circumstances”. He had not completed a positive lifestyle program as part of the bond. Harris had not recently used drugs and was in a supportive relationship with his partner, who attended the court hearing, the lawyer said. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said a simple fine wouldn’t be just punishment, but noted Harris hadn’t re-offended since last year. “She’s simply doing her job and coming across someone like you ... It would have been frightening to her.” He convicted Harris and put him on a 12-month supervised community corrections order with 100 hours of unpaid work. Fifty of those work hours could be used on drug counselling and rehab.

Cash-hungry burglars on the go By GEORGIA WESTGARTH A SERIES of burglaries have left damaged property across Lynbrook and Cranbourne West as burglars jemmied open windows and doors. Three restaurants on Universal Way in Cranbourne West were entered by burglars on Fri-
day 24 June between 11pm and 4.30am the following morning. A small amount of cash was stolen during the three break-ins, and offenders were described as wearing light-coloured clothing. The next day a drive through window was the access point

for a burglar who stole a small amount of cash at a burger restaurant in the Lynbrook Village shopping centre, between 7.30am and 7.50am on Saturday 25 June. Once inside the fast food chain, the offender left the premises through the same jemmied window.

Mega swim cash for MS By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS SIX steadfast teams have raised more than $26,000 during a 24hour multiple-sclerosis ‘mega swim’ at Casey RACE on 9 July. Leading the pack in the MS Mega Swim were three teams
from Nuna Youth Squad, which collectively raised at least $22,000, for their herculean efforts. Nuna Youth had raised more than $91,000 in five previous MS swimathons. Kate Nolan, of the Night Trawlers team, was the top in-
dividual who collected $1825 of pledged donations. The best dressed award went to Morgan Kellett-Jackson, who dressed as a mermaid. The funds raised in the national event will go to multiplesclerosis research and support services.

Our dogs have their day By GEORGIA WESTGARTH PEARCEDALE’S Jason Thompson is one of the country’s leading greyhound trainers and says he can’t see much movement for the local industry, in the wake of the New South Wales government’s decision to shut down the sport next year. Mr Thompson, a family man who has been in the greyhound racing business close to 30 years told The News: “It’s not that easy for anybody to uproot their lives and move interstate.” He said the influx of trainers and dogs that was first reported wouldn’t be a large one. “It’s only natural some trainers who want to pursue careers will move interstate and perhaps choose Victoria but I’m sure Greyhound Racing Victoria (GRV) will put due processes in place to ensure they can relocate,” Mr Thompson said. “Financially and logistically a move might not be viable - I don’t think an influx is an issue at all.” Mr Thompson, 47, trains 20 greyhounds out of his Pearcedale property and has done for 13 years. His last Group 1 win amounted to $250,000, just two weeks ago, and he said the livelihoods of the interstate trainers were where the true cost lay. “I was quite shocked - I didn’t see it coming and it’s obviously very disappointing, all I can do is feel sorry for the NSW people. “This affects families and that’s where it becomes hard.” Mr Thompson said the swift action from the Victorian Government to assure the local industry’s future shows great certainty in the GRV. “I think people in the community should gain confidence in that it wasn’t a delayed reaction from the State Gov-

live-bait. This fuelled a Special Commission of Inquiry into the Greyhound Racing Industry. But Mr Thompson says Victoria acted and is running the way it needs to. “We are in such a strong position in Victoria, we’ve acted the way we needed to and I think there lies the problem - perhaps NSW might not have.
“I’d like to think the implementation of strict welfare changes to the industry has been easy - it was simple for me, we really didn’t have to make any changes and on the whole I think it has been much the same - but I can only comment on my own experience.” A confident Mr Thompson said the greyhound racing industry had a strong future in Victoria.
“From what I’ve heard Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia have all come out in support of the industry and they have confidence in the industry which is what we need to hear,” he said. Attorney General and Victorian Minister for Racing, Martin Pakula, took to Twitter on Thursday 7 July to show his support for the embattled sport. Mr Pakula tweeted: “I am backing @GRV_News to continue and complete the reform job it commenced more than 12 months ago. None of the Perna, Milne or Bittar reports recommended the shutdown of Victorian greyhound racing. It is an industry that employs thousands. “But since live baiting the industry’s been on notice. Every participant should know its future depends on ongoing commitment to reform.” The NSW Government’s decision, announced on Thursday 7 July, is based on the Special Commission of Inquiry into the Greyhound Racing Industry - which found overwhelming evidence of systemic animal cruelty, including mass greyhound killings and live-baiting. Yesterday Premier Mike Baird and Deputy Premier and Minister for Racing Troy Grant announced that their government was acting to protect animal welfare as a priority, and was planning for an orderly industry shutdown. The pair released the inquiry report which found that between 48,000 and 68,000 greyhounds - or at least half of all greyhounds bred to race - were killed in the past 12 years because they were deemed uncompetitive. Shortly after the NSW announcement, the ACT announced that it would also move to ban the sport in Australia’s capital.

One club, one direction By DAVID NAGEL ONE football club moving forward in one direction - that’s the aim of the Officer Senior Football Club after announcing it will field a senior Women's football team in 2017. Senior Football Club President Barry O’Loughlin said it just felt right for the club to move forward and enter a team in the South East division of the VWFL next year. “It will be great for the club, but more importantly it will provide a pathway for local girls to continue their football journey, and for new players to join up and join in the fun,” O’Loughlin said. “We’re working very hard
to embrace a one-club mentality, where the women will play their home games on the same day as the men and everyone will be treated as equal.” O’Loughlin said there were a few key factors in the club making this decision. “The junior football club has some top-age players coming through, where are they going to play, and women’s football is definitely here to stay,” he said. “It would be silly to create that interest and then put a road-block in the way - this just makes a lot of sense and we’re totally committed to making it happen.” The Kangaroos will join a nine-team competition that in-
cludes south east clubs such as Beaconsfield, Endeavour Hills and Hallam, and have already begun the journey on the road to that first game next year. The doors are open at Starling Road for female footballers of all skill sets to join in training, on Tuesday and Thursday nights, and start developing their skills for next year. Youth Girls coach Tim Smith will help with training and has already had a handful of girls turn up and put themselves through their paces. Their latest win came on Saturday night in their first ever night game at home. They annihilated the Ballarat Falcons 64-3 under lights in a game that had plenty of feeling, with two Falcons players and one Silverback ejected. But the Pakenham side was far too strong in every facet. Trimble shone at linebacker, as did Russell at quarterback, while Felix Brown’s running game, Dan Salvar’s tackling, and Jason Howlett efforts on both sides of the ball proved the biggest difference-makers. Two of the biggest highlights from the game were a bone-jarring hit from Russell on an explosive run, and a brilliant interception and touchdown from Mitch Farrant in his first year of senior gridiron. The Silverbacks will this Saturday take on the Northern Raiders from 6.30pm at DR Atkinson Reserve in Reservoir.

Trimble has also played with the Berwick Miners and South Eastern Predators in his five years in the sport so far. But it’s at the Silverbacks where he’s found a true belonging. The club has come off winning the Division 2 championship last season to maintain a so-far unbeaten start to their 2016 campaign. But they’ve still got plenty of detractors. “We had the bare essentials to even be recognised by the rest of the league and a lot of other people thought we were a laughing stock last season,” Trimble said. “To win the championship felt even better.” Trimble is part of a Silverbacks group hell-bent on improving their games with every opportunity. Not only are they working towards going backto-back in Division 2 this year, they’re aiming to make their way up into Division 1 and stay there for the long-haul.

“CHESS with broken bones”. That’s how 23-year-old Pakenham Silverbacks linebacker Tommy Trimble describes the sport of gridiron. He’s broken fingers, both hands, badly damaged his AC joint, and torn his meniscus in his knee. But he wouldn’t have the sport any other way. Trimble was the one who introduced his sister Ash to Richie Howlett, with the pair going on to help form the Silverbacks and play key roles in its day-today running. He admits doubting their ability to set up their own local Gridiron Victoria club. “I made the mistake of not taking Rich and Ash seriously about what they could do in terms of building a club,” he said. “They’ve set up a great club and I love every day that I’m a part of it.”

Fresh winning formula excites By DAVID NAGEL A FRESH face, a fresh voice and some fresh ideas have propelled Pakenham to its best performance of the season, a 76-point crushing of a disappointing Officer at Toomuc Reserve. Coach Steve O’Bryan -studying in Chicago- last week handed over the keys to former Belgrave coach Sean Stanton and gave him a licence to run free. Stanton took command for the week, giving his leaders control of training and switching some magnets around on the whiteboard. Back went Ben Fraser, forward went Steve Morey, and a multiple league best and fairest winner as a junior, Jake Barclay, spent plenty of time in the middle of the ground. It seemed to reinvigorate a group that had won just two games for the season.
“For a few weeks now we’ve been pretty flat, like we’ve had the weight of the world on our shoulders, but the boys played with passion today and really looked like they enjoyed it,” Stanton said. The Lions held a 19-point lead at quarter time, were challenged by the Kangas early in the second, before setting up a commanding 35-point lead at the last break. They then played their best football for the season, kicking 8.0 to 1.1 in a lastquarter exhibition. Stanton challenged his leaders and they all responded. Kym Jones kicked four, Luke Walker three, while Anthony Young and Dean Blake played with newfound enthusiasm. Sam Blackwood continued his impressive form off half back, while youngster Nathan Johnston kicked two in his first game for the season.

Officer was extremely disappointing; especially in the last quarter when it appeared to very nearly wave the white flag. Ben O’Loughlin, Chris Larosa and Dylan Chapman were three who did fight the game out until the end. Cranbourne has overcome a very wayward start to defeat Doveton by 47 points at Casey Fields. The home side had the first nine shots of the game, kicking 1.8, before Doveton kicked two in a minute to undo their opponents’ good work. But the Doves flurry didn’t last long, with the Eagles regaining the ascendency and cruising home to a comfortable victory.

Tough battle for finals berth By DAVID NAGEL THE South East Football Netball League - right now it’s like trying to put a big-square peg into a small triangle hole. Four into three just aint gunna go! That’s going to be the story of the last six weeks of the season, with Hampton Park (28), Tooradin (28), Doveton (26) and a fast-finishing Cranbourne (26) waged in a four-team war for three spots in this year’s finals series. And it’s well worth the fight too, with all four teams more than capable of leap-frogging Beaconsfield and becoming Narre Warren’s worst nightmare on grand final day. But Narre coach Greg Heinrich isn’t seeing it that way just yet. “We get asked that a lot, ‘What are you expecting when you get to finals’, but we’ve still got five more games to go before we even get there yet,” Heinrich said. The Magpies certainly had to give Saturday’s game their full attention, taking on a Beaconsfield side that had remained unbeaten since going down to the Magpies in round three. But the Magpies rose to the challenge once again, pulling away in the first three quarters for a comfortable 49-36 victory.
