Something fishy By MEGAN OGLE NOOSA North Shore fishers are under attack again, but Fisheries Queensland says it’s all above board. In a Facebook post on Sunday 10 July, Peter Wise posted photos of what appears to be illegal camping on the Noosa North Shore and commercial fishers from interstate reeling in a big catch. “How is it possible that netters from New South Wales can come here to the Noosa Biosphere and Noosa North Shore, camp where they like with no facilities, in a no camp zone, take about 300 tonnes of breeding stock fish that should have spawned the lake systems here, truck them back to NSW and it’s called a priority?” Mr Wise said. Mr Wise called on local and state governments to address the issue, but Fisheries Queensland said the interstate fishers were above board. “Commercial fishing along ocean beaches for mullet occurs from 1 April to 31 August each year and the fishery has been operating in the Noosa region for approximately 100 years,” a spokesperson said. “There are a limited number of commercial fishers licensed to take fish commercially using ocean beach nets in the Noosa North Shore area. These licences predominantly target sea mullet and take only small quantities of other species.” However Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) said they were recently made aware of concerns being raised regarding fishers camping near the mouth of the Noosa River
and were addressing the issue. “In 2012, QPWS worked with commercial fishers and the Sunshine Coast Regional Council to come to an arrangement regarding overnighting on Noosa North Shore as part of undertaking their commercial fishing operations,” they said. “It is understood that many commercial fishers in recent years have elected to camp on private property in the area. QPWS has made contact with the group and is engaging in further discussions.” Retired local fisher Trevor Clarey said one way to combat the issue of illegal camping was to allocate the Noosa North Shore to local commercial fishers only. “Those NSW fishers have Queensland licences which allow them to legally fish over there,” Mr Clarey said. “I’ve always pushed for local netters only in the work times between 6am and 7pm, then there is no illegal camping as local fishers are home with their families overnight.” However the Fisheries Queens-land spokesperson said there were no plans to make changes to the fishery along the Noosa North Shore. “There are no plans that specifically address changes to the ocean beach net fishery at this time. The fishery is considered sustainable under the National “Status of Key Australian Fish Stocks” process,” they said. THE development of the new Rufous Street precinct is expected to be approved and ratified by council this month as local residents welcome the new community space. In a report put before the Planning and Environment Committee on Tuesday 12 July, the new space is said to be an integrated community based development consisting of a digital hub, new commu-
nity house, cafe, amenities, playground and offices. The two-storey digital hub will include co-work spaces with shared facilities and services, meeting rooms and event spaces, while the top floor will include larger office spaces for commercial lease. There will also be a smaller building which includes public amenities, a small food and beverage outlet or office space. The development will be
carried out in stages with a new community house being built in the second stage and will include an earth ramp to a green roof and open and covered break-out areas with 23 car parking spaces provided on the lower level. The open spaces have been earmarked for a playground, but further community consultation will be undertaken to determine appropriate uses for the site.
Charity helps the world and at home By MEGAN OGLE A LOCAL charity is branching out to support local women to get a leg-up in the business world, while also helping children abroad. Cathy Harrison runs Regain Hope; a charity committed to helping enslaved children and youth in many overseas countries, and with the opening of a new collaborative space, local women are also set to benefit. Cathy currently runs two charity shops located in Maroochydore and Coolum and will launch her new venture, Vintage Alley, next to the third charity shop located at 171 Eumundi Road, Noosaville. Vintage Alley is a collaborative project which offers local women a space to launch their start-up business or advertise their services without the hefty overheads of renting a shopfront or workshop and will also help to support the Regain Hope charity. “We can offer permanent shelf space to launch a product, we have a workshop for more creative projects, there’s a mezzanine floor where beauty, health and nutrition services can be set up,” Cathy said. “Anything you are wanting to sell, offer or make, we can accommodate you. “We even have a consultation room and training space which can be used after hours.” Cathy said Vintage Alley already had locally made soy candles, vintage furniture, teas, handmade clothes and beauty services on offer, plus great coffee in the cafe.

Volunteer and collaborator Ingrid Olsen said the project was a great chance for local women to get their product or service onto the market through a supportive and collaborative environment. “We’re hoping to create a sense of community; a place where ev-
eryone can feel welcome,” she said. Local musicians are also encouraged to join the collaborative space with music nights and a resident piano in the near future for the project. If you would like to be part of Vintage Alley or would like

PUBLIC consultation has closed for the new Koala Conservation Plan which is set to be adopted by Noosa Council next week. In a report put before the Planning and Environment Committee on Tuesday (12 July), 41 submissions were received by council concerning a wide range of issues. The report detailed domestic and wild dog control, enhanced protection, greater penalties for tree clearing and improved koala infrastructure as some of the most raised issues. One submitter raised concerns over the use of schedule seven poison 1080 by council to control wild dogs, however the report states there will be no change to council’s current use of the poison. The plan will also include information regarding the new Richard Branson Koala Conservancy and provide more information on utilising koala detection dogs prior to developments. A Noosa Council spokesperson said the use of 1080 baits was endorsed through the Pest Management Plan Working Group. "Recent research on koala mortality in SE Queensland has shown that the major cause of injury and death is from feral dog attack," they said. "Landholders are registered to be part of any baiting program and individual baits are recorded and an audit undertaken at the end of the program."

Get in for gambling cash APPLICATIONS for the latest round of Queensland’s largest one-off grants program, the Gambling Community Benefit Fund (GCBF) are now open. State Member for Noosa, Glen Elmes MP said successful applicants could receive grants ranging from $500 up to an incredible $35,000. “Through the distribution of approximately $52 million each year to Queensland’s not for profit sector, these grants help small groups grow and improve services, leisure activities and opportunities to the community,“ Mr Elmes said. “Groups can apply for a grant to repair,
upgrade or purchase new facilities, purchase new equipment including vehicles, boats, tractors, trailers; stage an event or festival, or run a training program or workshop. “There are four funding rounds each year and in the most recent round more than $1.1 million went to Queensland groups to purchase, install, or repair solar panels or systems. “Our local rugby club, the Noosa Dolphins, were one such successful recipient who realised that off-setting the cost of electricity with solar will be crucial to the club’s financial longevity. “The Noosa electorate is home to
many successful and professionally run community groups and organisations that rely heavily on funding support such as the GCBF. I urge groups to visit http:// www.justice.qld.gov.au/corporate/sponsorships-and-grants/grants/communitybenefit-funding-programs to apply.“ The closing date for this current round of the GCBF is 31 August. Mr Elmes said groups were welcome to contact his office to be considered for a letter of support, should they wish. “It is important to remember that if not successful in one round, groups are encouraged to apply again in future rounds,“ Mr Elmes said.

Funds for boardwalk COUNCIL’S 2016-’17 budget includes $1.5 million for the renewal of the Park Road boardwalk at Noosa Heads. The iconic boardwalk connects Hastings Street with the headland section of Noosa National Park and after three decades of service, is now due for replacement. The section between First Point and Little Cove was refurbished under the Sunshine Coast Council, with Noosa Council responsible for completing the project. Work will begin in 2016’17 on the section between Little Cove and the park entrance with the noteworthy and lengthy project expected to be completed in the following financial year.
Council has been working with a community reference group in regards to the boardwalk’s design and Mayor Tony Wellington said significant trees, including koala food trees, would be incorporated into the design.
Funding for blackspots THE latest council budget includes $1.7 million to fix two notorious intersections in the shire. Mayor Tony Wellington announced council will contribute to the upgrade of the Hilton Terrace/Ernest Street intersection, a site of numerous vehicle accidents, and also the Poinciana Avenue/Moorindil Street intersection which frequently gets highly congested. Council will reseal Hilton Terrace between the Doonella Bridge and the Hilton Esplanade roundabout to coincide with the intersection upgrade, as well as provide bicycle lanes and safety improvements for pedestrians. Mayor Tony Wellington said a recent transport study ranked the Hilton Terrace/Ernest Street intersection highest on the list of council-controlled intersections in need of an upgrade, with some 17,000 vehicle movements a day. The study also ranked the Poinciana Avenue/ Moorindil Street intersection as the second highest priority. For this intersection, the aim is to construct a left-turn slip lane from Moorindil Street into Poinciana Avenue. This will reduce the long queues of traffic forming in Moorindil, particularly in the mornings. “This council takes road safety very seriously,” Councillor Wellington said. “While sorting out our own road issues, we are also seeking commitments from the State Government to improve their road infrastructure, including the Beckmans Road corridor in Noosaville and the Myall/Elm Street intersection in Cooroy.”

Councillors are bright sparks MAYOR Tony Wellington says council is considering installing roadside public charging stations as Noosa gears up for the global shift to electric vehicles. “Electric buses will hit our streets in the new year, in a joint pilot trial with Translink. But now we’re also starting to think about where we might install public charging stations for private vehicles,” Cr Wellington said. Noosa Council’s planning and infrastructure director Martin Drydale said the two e-Station Cir Control Combination fast chargers were pur-
chased by council in mid-2015 before a lease agreement with original contractor Patico fell through due to ongoing delays and technical issues. A call for new tenders stated a preference for buses to be compatible with the E-station fast chargers; however in a report tendered at the Noosa Council services and organisation committee meeting on 10 May, no tenders were fully compatible. Councillor Wellington said installing public charging stations gave Noosa a chance to “jump on board” the “global trend towards electric vehicles”.
“Noosa has a reputation for being at the forefront of environmental activities and I think there’s a real opportunity to encourage greater take-up and use of electric vehicles locally,” the mayor said. “I am very pleased to see that some of our local tourism operators are already onto this trend. RACV Noosa has been trialing two electric Nissan Leaf cars that they make available to their guests for just $30 a day.” RACV Noosa Resort’s Danny Cannon said RACV was committed to sustainability at its resort proper-
ties, including the use of sustainable transport. “The take-up of the electric cars at RACV Noosa has grown since they were introduced in January. Every day at least one of the electric cars is used by our guests. RACV has also installed two charging stations at Australia Zoo as part of our commitment to environmental responsibility,“ Mr Cannon said. Sofitel Noosa Pacific Resort has two electric vehicle charging stations installed. According to their Chief Engineer, Richard Phillips, this has already attracted Tesla drivers to stay
at their establishment. “Electric vehicles have clear health and environmental benefits, particularly where they are charged with 100 per cent renewable electricity,“ Cr Wellington said. “Despite some political and even consumer resistance here in Australia, the future is renewable energy and electric transport.“ “In the meantime, Noosa Council is working closely with Beyond Zero Emissions to audit all of its operations and thus set a zero emissions target."

Council’s spray for graffiti vandals COUNCIL is cracking down on graffiti vandals, following a spate of incidents at community facilities. Councillor Joe Jurisevic said police were investigating each case of vandalism, with council quick to paint over all of the tags. “Graffiti vandals’ work won’t be rewarded. We have a zero-tolerance approach to graffiti and it will be removed quickly,� he said. In recent weeks graffiti vandals have struck at numerous sites across the shire, targeting councilowned facilities at Sunshine Beach and sports clubs. “We’re urging young vandals to heed the ‘Respect it, don’t wreck it’ message, and if they won’t do that then be warned that damage will be reported to the police,� Cr Jurisevic said. “Graffiti crime costs the community greatly and council will provide any evidence that may assist in bringing offenders who damage public assets to justice.� Young offenders are also now being made to clean up graffiti under an agreement with the Sunshine Coast Youth Justice Service.

SUNSHINE Coast Aero Club patron and Sunshine Coast Regional Council Mayor Mark Jamieson presented a $2500 cheque to Careflight board member Bill Freeman on Sunday (10 July) following their recent successful Fly it Forward day. Club President Stuart Marshall said the Fly it Forward day was undertaken by the Sunshine Coast Aero Club as part of the Women in Aviation Week celebrations. “The funds raised from the day will go to support a very worthwhile local cause in Careflight who do a magnificent in our local community,” he said. Sunday’s event included the club’s monthly barbecue with food, drinks and conversation about all things aviation and of course, some flying. The Sunshine Coast Aero Club was founded in 1959 as the Maroochy Aero Club but has recently changed its name to become the Sunshine Coast Aero Club. The club has a flight training school and trains its students in a number of very modern aircraft located on-site, as well as offering aircraft to members for private hire.

New officer on the beat By JOLENE OGLE SENIOR Constable Jason Pinnell has made the ultimate sea change from the bright city lights of Brisbane to Hastings Street as the new Noosa Heads Police Beat officer. Sen Const Pinnell grew up in Noosa when his family moved to the region in 1978, and recalls spending most afternoons playing with friends on Noosa Main Beach. “It’s great to be back. This feels like coming home,” he said. “When I was a little kid I would always come down to the beach, and Hey Bill was there way back then. There’s a lot of faces I recognise, so this is like coming home.” After travelling the world and joining the Police academy in 2004, Sen Const Pinnell spent
11 years patrolling Fortitude Valley’s 865 licenced premises, and while he’s used to a chaotic nightlight, he said he was looking forward to the change. Noosa Heads Officerin-Charge Senior Sergeant Steve McReight said it was great to have an officer with Sen Const Pinnell’s experience on the beat. “He joins us with 11 years' experience in Brisbane’s Valley. It’s great to have someone with expertise such as his on the Hastings Street beat,” he said. Now, with a young family, Sen Const Pinnell tried for five years to be transferred to a much soughtafter Sunshine Coast or Noosa posting to be closer to his extended family. “Now that we’re back, our family loves having us close by,” he said. Sen Const Pinnell has replaced former Hastings
Street Police Beat officer, Sen Const Pierre Senekal, who is now stationed in Kenilworth. As the new friendly face on the Hastings Street beat, Snr Const Pinnell will patrol the entire precinct from the shops to Main Beach. “I will be regularly patrolling the shops and the beachfront, and if I’m not doing that I will be back (in the Police Beat office),” he said. “If there is a serious concern, the community can phone triple-zero and they will be able to raise me on the radio no matter where I am.” The Noosa Heads Police Beat is located at the start of Hastings Street and is open Monday to Friday, with Noosa Heads police station officers patrolling the precinct throughout the evenings and on weekends.
Slow down for schools POLICE are urging motorists to slow down as thousands of local students return to the classroom today (Monday) to start term three. Noosa Heads Officer in Charge Senior Sergeant Steve McReight said police officers would be monitoring the school zones to make sure drivers were within the 40km/h school zone speed limit. “Local police officers will be enforcing the speed limit in all school areas across the region," Sen Sgt McReight said. The police patrols are designed to help keep students safe as they travel to and from school. The school zones are clearly marked with large signs and road markings and are active between 7-9am and again from 2-4pm.

Bus shelters on route to win NOOSA’S new-look bus shelters have continued their winning streak, this time collecting two Queensland design awards. The Majstorovic Architecture design won the Urban Design Award and Sustainable Architecture Award in the 2016 Queensland State Architecture Awards, hosted by the Australian Institute of Architects. “The Noosa bus shelter design outshone projects from across the state, including big city projects, to win these awards, which is a tribute to the quality of the design,” Deputy Mayor Frank Wilkie said. “The shelters improve safety and access for all, especially passengers with a disability, and reflect the Noosa design principles.” In April the design claimed the Regional Project of the Year Award and a Regional Commendation Award in the 2016 Sunshine Coast Regional Architecture Awards. It is now in the running for an Australian Institute of Architects national award. Cr Wilkie said the new shelters were in place at 27 bus stops across the

The State Government will cover half the cost through a funding program established to assist local councils upgrade their bus stops to new design standards. Oh God - they're back THE bats of Wallace and Pinaroo Parks have returned in their thousands. Thank heavens I did not waste my time apologising to Noosa Council as some readers suggested. The sad thing is that Noosa Council, in its stubbornness, refused to cut back the vegetation in those parks as promised and refused to plant gumtrees which koalas like in place of the paperbarks. So now we have the bats back. In a letter dated 30 June, the director-general of the Department of Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning wrote to me and said “immediate management responsibility for this matter (flying-foxes) rests with the council and the Deputy Premier has limited powers to intervene or direct the council in operational matters”. The letter goes on to state that the council is now planning to commence a 10-metre vegetation separation, which was supposed to be completed in May 2016. To my knowledge it was never started. Furthermore, the council was planning to commence a trial to implement a sprinkler system (first recommended to council two years ago) in September 2016, which is aimed to create a further 15-metre buffer between the flying-fox camps and residents. I will not hold my breath given council’s consistent “do nothing” approach. In the meantime, we have a dead bat out on the green space. Council was rung about it at 7.30am on Wednesday (6 July) and nothing had been done about it by 11am in spite of council being made aware that it is located right in the walkway where dog owners and schoolchildren roam. Doesn’t the council ever care about its residents? It seems only the welfare of bats are of concern to them. K. Fielden, Tewantin. Cooroy Rotary bags award ROTARIAN Andrew Aves has been welcomed aboard as the new president of the Rotary Club of Cooroy at their annual changeover dinner held at the Cooroy Bowls Club. Over 50 Rotarians attended the event last Monday 4 July where outgoing president Linda Morrell passed on the leadership. At the dinner, past district governor Carolyn Kruger presented the club with a Presidential Citation from Rotary International for helping to make a difference in the lives of people all over the world. Ms Morrell said it was an honour to accept the award for the club. “(The award) recognises all the hard work members of the Rotary Club of Cooroy have put into our events, activities and fund- raising over the past 12 months,” she said. “The club has assisted at fun events like Cooroy Fusion and works in partnership with
the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce on Christmas in Cooroy; our Cooroy Mountain Spring Festival event raised funds for good causes with Sunshine Butterflies as the major beneficiary receiving $8000.” This year the Col Stevens Award for Outstanding Club Service was given to past president Cath Lyndon and past district governor John Gabb. Cath and John have been active throughout the community, supporting youth through breakfast clubs, Post Graduate Bursaries at the University of the Sunshine Coast, Rotary Young Driver Awareness - a programme to reduce trafficrelated death and injury- as well as many other community projects. Tex Pipke was the recipient of the Reg and Una Bryant Award for Outstanding Community Service for his work with Cooroy Future Group and effort to bring the Cooroy Butter Factory into community
management. The contribution of past president Carol Johnston was recognised with an Avenues of Service Citation from Rotary International; an award from Rotary to personally recognise a member for their outstanding efforts in all five of the avenues of service. Incoming president Mr Aves said he was looking forward to the future. “My aspiration is to maintain and promote the fellowship and fun of Rotary with a programme of events and activities to enhance the quality of life for Cooroy residents and to assist those less fortunate than ourselves,” he said. “The club will again be running the Cooroy Mountain Spring Festival to raise funds for local, regional, national and international good causes, and we look forward to a good attendance on 16 October 2016.”

Roads close for festival THE 38th annual King of the Mountain Festival in Pomona will be held on Sunday 24 July, and as per previous years will include the following street closures: Reserve Street between School Street and the eastern side of the railway crossing from 6am to 5.30pm; Memorial Avenue between Church Street and Station Street from 6am to 5.30pm; Hospital Street between Mountain Street and Memorial Avenue from 6am to 5.30pm; School Street between Mountain Street and Reserve Street from 8.30am to noon and Mountain Street between School Street and Church Street from 12.30pm to 5pm. Alternative routes around the festival area are via School Street, Factory Street, Railway Parade, Red Street and Rectory/ Church Streets. Detour signs around the affected areas will be posted.

Shed space for art exhibits THERE is an exciting new exhibition space available at the Pomona Railway Station Gallery following the refurbishment of the Banana Shed. The space is ideal for artists wanting to display their works or for tutors who want to present workshops to students. Any artist who would like to use the space is invited to submit an application for an exhibition or a proposal for any workshops. The rustic shed provides a unique setting for exhibitions and can house paintings of various sizes. Each exhibition will run for four weeks and will cost $50 to hire the space as well as a commission to the Pomona Railway Station Gallery per sale. Artists and artisans are welcome to submit applications to provide workshops in the Banana Shed for small groups with a fee of 15 per cent of the workshop income. Boardwalk closure for roof works COUNCIL will close part of the Main Beach boardwalk and establish a detour for several days in July so contractors can replace the Main Beach lifeguard tower’s rusty roof. Noosa Council facility officer Ian Pearce said contractors planned to start work on the lifeguard tower, near the surf club, on Monday 18 July. “Weather permitting the work will be completed within three days,” he said. Council will establish a detour around the tower, through the surf club car park. “The boardwalk will be closed off with temporary fencing and barriers while the work is underway,” Mr Pearce said. “Over the years the salt spray from the ocean has corroded the roof sheets so they’re in need of replacing.

Having a space like this would allow for a better balance in our lives.“ Ms Sherriff said it could be challenging to be a successful business woman while raising a family but said starting an enterprise is achieveable. “Go easy on yourself. Allow yourself to just be a mother for a while and not feel as though you need an additional title,“ she said. “I spent a lot of time trying to figure out what is was I was going to do etc, but looking back I wasted precious time just basking in the journey of motherhood. Once you let go and just be your life will be less chaotic. “The right idea, timing and opportunity will arrive just as its suppose to. Have faith and enjoy it. Certainly don’t force it.“

Festival fills the streets THE Noosa Long Weekend festival kicks off this weekend and to celebrate 15 fabulous years, the festival will open with the biggest and best street party ever. Festival director Ian Mackellar said the street party was a way to say thanks to the community for their support. “For 15 years, the Noosa community has supported us, so this is our way of saying thank you,” he said. “Bring the kids and join in the fun as we turn Hastings Street into ‘Rio’ for two fun-filled hours.” Join the crowds on Hastings Street from 5.15pm on Friday 15 July as musicians, dancers, drummers, floats, fire eaters, feathers and glitz culminate in a precision landing of five skydivers on Noosa Main Beach. Great food in good form FOR many years, Cooroy Chamber of Commerce has hosted the annual Dinner with the Mayor event. The tradition continues this year with Mayor Tony Wellington on Tuesday 23 August at the Cooroy RSL. Cooroy Chamber of Commerce president Danielle Taylor said the event had become a highlight on the Cooroy calendar and is informative as well as being a great social night. “Dinner with the Mayor is a great tradition that started over a decade ago and has continued with all the mayors since. Tony Wellington will be our fourth mayor to join the tradition. It is quite a social night and everyone always enjoys themselves plus it is an enjoyable way to
hear the latest news about the region,” Ms Taylor said. Dinner with the Mayor commences at 5.45pm for a 6pm start and is held in a private dining room. It is a social event and during the evening Mayor Tony Wellington will address the attendees and give an update on the Noosa region. Tickets include a delicious three-course meal at only $40 for members of the Cooroy Chamber and $45 for nonmembers. This is an event not to miss, particularly when you read the menu. Offering only the best, guests will enjoy a threecourse feast with garlic pizza bread to start followed by main meals being either a 300-gram

Botanical artists do. They pick out every tiny detail from the petal down to the stem. They even dissect seed pods and examine roots and leaves of plants, and if you ever wondered how all the flora in the world was discovered and named, it was from drawings produced by botanical artists and scientists in the golden years of the art, in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Yet, this ancient art form of drawing the ephemeral allure of flowers and vegetables has
not withered and died, but is alive and blooming in Noosa. Anyone who is interested can see this extraordinary work that is part of a joint exhibition including such crafts as scrapbooking, crochet, quilting and creative works of art daily at Wallace House, 1 Wallace Drive, Noosaville. The official opening of the exhibition will be held on Saturday 16 July at 10am, with the exhibition to run until Saturday 23 July. Pitchfork offers modern Australian cuisine and it’s clear the couple’s adventures around the world and six years spent touring Australia in a caravan have influenced their menu. The two chefs have created a menu that taps into the multiculturalism of Australia bringing together a sophisticated blend of international cuisines from European dishes to Asian spices. “We wanted to offer our diners a greater variety,” Kim said. “Australia is such a multicultural place and we wanted to showcase that.” The current menu features warming winter dishes such as the lamb pie served with Jerusalem artichoke, radish, peas and jus or the locals’ favourite passionfruit roulade with Turkish delight ice-cream and Persian fairy floss. Pitchfork is a rustic, wholesome restaurant that serves good, honest food created with passion, experience and a desire to stand out from the rest. Junior players keep in touch MORE than 90 Noosa touch players competed in the Junior State Cup in Hervey Bay last week, joining 213 teams and more than 3500 participants. The annual three-day event is the pinnacle of the junior touch calendar, and this year Noosa supplied eight teams in the girls and boys division from under-10 to under-16. Under-10 boys: Facing a difficult draw, the team got off to a slow start but every player held their heads high and showed their true spirit and determination for the remainder of the carnival. They played a draw, had a spectacular win over the highly regarded Rockhampton Redbacks and a played out a close loss to Bundaberg. Under-10 girls: The team started well with three wins on the first day, following up with another win and two losses on the second day of play and a win on day three. The girls pushed themselves to contain the victorious teams to single figure wins which other teams had been unable to do. They finished third overall. Under-12 Boys: The boys highlighted teamwork over the entire three days managing to take down Brisbane, Palm Beach and Rockhampton and keeping the opposition scoreless in some games. The boys only had a single loss coming at the hands of Redlands in a 1-0 cliffhanger. The under-12 boys and support crew
would like to thank Adam for being their nominated ref for the carnival. Under-12 Girls: It was a tough run for the girls, battling top-notch opponents, but the team still had a win and almost pulled off the upset of the carnival when they had a nail-biting loss against heavy weights, Toowoomba. The players’ player achievement went to Maddie Dwyer. Under-14 Boys: An early start for the boys produced a pleasing display with several touchdowns but not quite enough to get the win. Battling the strength of Brisbane and Gold Coast made for a tough first day. The team, a mix of rep players and first and second season players, exceeded expectations and grew with confidence as the carnival went on. Under-14 Girls: With a large team of 13 the under-14 girls set off with a massive sense of excitement. Their behaviour on the field was outstanding and a credit to the Noosa club as a whole. The age group was divided into three pools with some of the hardest teams being in Noosa’s pool of seven. Winning three of the six games, the girls can come away from the competition with heads held high, feeling proud of what they have achieved. Under-16 Boys: The boys were faced with the challenging task on day one of playing both Ipswich and Redlands. The Noosa boys showed
great spirit to be competitive in both games but were beaten by both teams. The team is eager to get back together and work on their skills for next year. Massive congratulations to Hayden Britten on receiving the players’ player award. Under-16 Girls: The Noosa under-16 girls proved that they are definitely a team on the rise with three good wins and three close losses in a strong and closely fought pool. Players’ player went to Pip Dwyer, and Holly Radge earning the coaches award. Thanks to all of our coaches and managers, without the time, effort and dedication of this group of volunteers this event would not be possible, they are truly appreciated. Junior sign-on for the next season is Wednesday 20 July, from 4pm to 5.30pm.

In what was almost like a two-fingered salute to the men in grey suits, Jules powered down the line for three high nines in one heat, combo-ing both his opponents. The cameras picked up a few interesting shots of Mick taking his time in paddling out for his first heat of the event, but I suspect it was just part of the well-known Fanning

Panga Productions’ Shaun Cairns and I were filming for an upcoming project about the multi-talented Patrick Burgess, his work in human rights in Asia with wife Galuh, and his absolute passion for surfing and music. I’ve written about Bali-based Patrick in these pages before, and some of you may have caught his music set at the surf festival last March with guitarist DC Paul. Catching up with bro Brendan from Sunshine Beach High and his family is what brought the Bali Burgess crew – Patrick, Galuh, and kids Sami and Liam – to town this week, but Patrick’s main mission in Australia is the launch of an album of original music in Sydney at the end of the month. Ground Zero is a collection of punchy ballads based on Patrick’s life experience that may well create a new music genre – surf-based human rights rock! Look out for it if you enjoy inventive, lyric-driven music. Meanwhile, in Myanmar the second series of Patrick and writer Phil Gwynne’s soap opera series with a message, “The Sun, The Moon and The Truth”, is about to screened for its adoring audience of five million, while a Timorese version is in preproduction in Dili. It’s a busy life, particularly when the swell has been pumping all season in Indo, and a surfer’s gotta do what a surfer’s gotta do.

THE surf for the opening stages of the J-Bay Pro in South Africa was certainly a mixed bag, with only just enough swell and winds doing a full rotation, from howling offshore to annoyingly onshore. I was about to settle in for the pointy end final seven heats to determine a winner last Sunday night when WSL commissioner Keiren Perrow called off the jam, with conditions too inconsistent to continue. Unfortunately for South Africa’s great white hope Jordie Smith, this only happened after he’d been eliminated by Hawaii’s John John Florence in the first quarter final. No shame in going down to John John anywhere, any time, but Jordie had been totally in command up to this point in what is more or less his home break, and definitely looked a contender. Strangely, the two surfers who had looked most likely to block Jordie’s run were the two Aussies who would have been forgiven this year if their performances were a little tentative and timid. But a year after their frightening encounter with a great white shark during last year’s abandoned final, Mick Fanning and
power in the waves to gouge a turn or launch a punt, our own Julian Wilson will be taking out a much-needed tour victory. Bowie on a tear CLOSER to home, the postponed Queensland Longboard Titles finally ran last weekend on the windaffected Sunshine beach breaks. I bet some one at Surfing Queensland is ruing the fact that they walked away from highly contestable point waves a month ago. The marginal conditions didn’t hamper Sunny Coaster Bowie Pollard, who took out the logger division and scored a third in the open men’s behind comeback king Josh Constable. Bowie, who surfs for the Beachbeat team, has been a podium regular since his grom days, taking out several titles at the Laguna Real Estate Noosa Festival of Surfing in the junior and open ranks, and if his bosses Al Hing and Noel Woods give him a week off, I’m sure he’ll give the nationals a big shake next month too. Enjoy perfect weather for great fishing By JACK MANGROVE WHAT a fantastic weekend it was for the last days of the school holidays. It was great to see so many families out enjoying all the Noosa waterways. In the river, fishing has been outstanding with a great many fish and species on offer. Down towards the river mouth the car park rocks have been fishing well for black fish with anglers report their return after a brief hiatus. There have been some quality fish landed with the best bait being Coolum Cabbage. Make sure you take a long handled landing net as there has been more than a few fish lost as anglers try to pole them in. Woods Bays and the Frying Pan area have been firing with some great tailor on offer, fish to 50cm have been reported with fast retrieved slugs being a favourite lure with anglers. Soft plastics have also been working well
and a prawn presentation has also picked up some nice trevally and bream. It’s coming to that time of the year where the flathead seem to grow in numbers in the river and there are some outstanding fish being caught. Work those sand or mud banks with the water running off on a run out tide and you are sure to get a feed. I like the lighter-coloured soft plastics in the clearer water and the brighter colours in the darker water. On the beach things have also been firing, tailor has been on the mind of most anglers as they head up the Noosa North Shore in search of a good feed. The thought of freshly caught tailor cooked on an open fire in nothing but a bit of butter between two slices of fresh bread is a childhood memory I will always treasure. I believe that fresh is best when it comes to tailor, so only catch what you intend to consume over the next day

or two for as soon as it goes in the freezer it's cat food or bait. The gutter have also been inhabited by dart, bream and the odd jewie. Most of the bigger fish have been taken in the low light periods. So an early start or a fish just on dark is prime time. Outside the closer reefs have really been fishing well. Good sweetlip, trout, pansized snapper, and cod have all been on the menu. Sunshine Reef, Jew Sholes and Chardons Reef have all come up with the goods. Mackerel and tuna continue to be caught with a couple of quality fish taken. Up on North Reef larger snapper, pearl perch, cobia and teraglin jew have all been accounted for. Those anglers that found a window to head out to the Barwon Banks were well rewarded with some outstanding snapper. So on behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures!

ON SATURDAY, the Pirates headed north up the Bruce Highway to picturesque Kandanga for the eagerly awaited clash against Pomona/Cooran. The weather was ideal and redemption was on the minds of the Pirates who were soundly beaten by the Cutters earlier in the season. Fast forward three months and the Pirates are a shell of their former selves. The game started with Pomona bursting out of the blocks and scored after just three minutes to lead by six points.
Pirates winger Ryan Mulder scored in the corner after some good lead-up work, however the conversion was unsuccessful so the Cutters held a slender two-point lead after 15 minutes. The Cutters extended their lead to eight points in the 21st minute and more than a few murmurs were heard in the crowd as to whether the Pirates could recover. Half-back Lachie Gladman scored shortly after cutting the lead to four and when the Flying Full Back Ben Hayes scored just before half-time, the Pirates held a slender 14 to 12 lead at the main break.

A solid win from the boys on Saturday. We got off to a slow start though, losing two players by half time with injury just like the week before. Players were trying to come off for a rest, but
we just didn’t have the numbers to replace them. Zac Smith was back this week, managed to be everywhere on field, a clear stand out. The big squid Biddy was exciting up forward in the second half and as we started to kick into gear Lou Fary in his second game back hit his straps and looked very dangerous down forward. He will be a vital player for us at the end of
season. Scotty Pi Magnum was outstanding again at fullback while Dylan Murray’s speed was on show all day. After missing twelve weeks with a shoulder injury it was fantastic to see Jordan Pottsy get threw his first game. Young Gus Bus from under 19’s helped us out along with TK. Bus took a nice mark and slotted it straight
through for an impressive goal in the second half. As we move forward with a bye this week, only four weeks remain. Fingers crossed we stay injury free and can put our best side on the field. We have the competition leaders Maroochydore after the bye, yet to taste defeat. Bring it on! Danny

HALF past midnight on Sunday, members of the Noosa Wave Runner Rescue Team, (Emergency Response Group) Scott Summers (Sunshine Beach) Chris and Keaton Grandemange (Noosa) responded to a call to assist the Coast Guard with a craft that had run aground in the surf zone of the Noosa Bar. On arrival they found a Coast Guard member had been injured when a tow rope broke and the crew was hit by the backlash. He was quickly conveyed to hospital, a new rope obtained, and while Summers assisted the Coast Guard the Grandemanges went to the Noosa Base to prepare another craft for stand-by, if needed. All worked out well and the crewman is making a full recovery; another midnight rescue situation that had our local lifesavers and coast guard working together as a team. Well done to all! On Sunday morning, with 120 members in attendance, the annual general meeting and election of of-
ficers of the Noosa Heads S.L.S. C. were held. In the president’s report tabled and accepted by members, president Greg Cowie stated in part, “The report will showcase many noteworthy and memorable moments, that our members and the club have achieved as a proactive and effective club.” Among the highlights mentioned and there were many, were several outstanding ones. Noosa again provided a safe bathing area at both Noosa Heads and Peregian; the club has continued to increase our patrolling services beyond the traditional flagged areas; surf awareness program which catered for 25 schools, thus resulting in the education of over 4000 school children on surf safety. Regarding surf sports, Noosa has climbed from 17th place to 8th in Australian rankings. Also the outstanding success of the Seahorse Nippers program and the ongoing success of the Junior Activities was noted. Further to this, he expressed his thanks to the Supporter Club Committee management and staff. The important role played by our club sponsors was also noted and thanked.

Above all the combined efforts of all sub-committees and their staff was gratefully acknowledged. The election of major positions resulted in the following. Club president Ross Fisher; deputy president Rob Harney, director of finance Craig Moore, club captain Roger Aspinall, director of Peregian Brett Leckie and director of Junior Activities Sam Smith. We wish them well in the season ahead. Following the election it was announced that Ian Young OAM, Life Member, had been appointed to the position of Life Governor, for his ongoing contribution to the Noosa Club; an honour well deserved. Retiring club captain Ian Widdicombe, stepped down after four years in office plus two as vicecaptain and eight years on the Life Saving Committee. His outstanding contribution was noted. During general business, veteran Noosa member Ken Dinham was invited to address the meeting regarding his experiences in Vietnam. Ken along with fellow Australian David Field has for the last three years been working in Hoian, just outside Da Nang. His main job is to assist training lifeguards to obtain their SRC
(Surf Rescue Certificate) and also work with nippers at Da Nang and Hoian. Also while working with lifeguards they interview members who hopefully can be trained as teachers. During his presentation, Ken thanked the Noosa club for their donation of 10 rescue boards and eight rescue tubes. “There is much to do,” said Ken. “Just recently nine boys aged between 10 and 14 years were drowned in one tragedy in a nearby river and a couple of days later three young girls died in the surf. Of the many thousands of people who visit the beaches (and this is usually from 5am till 8am then 4pm until sunset,) only about 5 per cent can swim. Many have now taken to wearing lifejackets.” In the immediate area around where Ken and David work, it is nothing for between 1200 and 1500 adults and children to drown in rivers, creeks, dams and at beaches in a period of one year. At the completion, newly elected president Ross Fisher congratulated all new office bears and wished all members the very best for the forth coming season.
ON SUNDAY, the Supporter Club of the Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving Club, herein referred to as the surf club, conducted their annual meeting and election of officer bearers. Board chairman Ian Young tabled what was a very successful annual report. In his report he acknowledged what was a very substantial amount donated to the senior club. In doing so he thanked all board members for their input and in particular Anton Mogg, manager of the surf club and his staff. Add to this, the involvement of Anton Mogg with local governing bodies, ably supported by Carmel Savage, has been outstanding. The performance of the club restaurant under the supervision of Peter and Steve Thynne supported by head chef Campbell McClelland and staff all added up to a highly successful year. It was these combined performances that saw the surf club named the Best Club Sunshine Coast, and Best Community Service by a Club in Queensland at this years Queensland Club Awards Dinner. In part, Young stated: “A recent strategic session with club industry consultants Dickson Wohlsen Strategies, ensures that we stay on the forefront of the industry.” During the year he emphasised the importance of being more involved in community support programs. This was to result in the support and sponsorship of the following: Noosa Festival of Surfing, Sunshine Coast Sports Federation all local football codes, Seahorse Nippers, Smile for a Child Noosa Tri and many others. In closing, he congratulated the active club, patrolling members, competitors and in particular Steve Mawby and the amazing Seahorse Nippers, and extended best wishers for the season ahead. Regarding the board of directors, all members were returned to office. As newly-elected president of the senior active club, Ross Fisher will now automatically take a chair on the board.
Noosa’s top hoops THE Noosa District State High School combined Year 10 and 11 girls’ basketball team took out the Sunshine Coast Schools’ Basketball grand final, defeating a team from St Andrew’s Anglican College last term. The all-girls team were the only state school registered in the competition. Coach Suzanne Harrold said her team represented NDSHS impeccably. “The girls wore their uniform well and with pride and they treated all teams, staff members, parents and officials with great respect,“ Ms Harrold said. Olympic best wishes aired By JOLENE OGLE NOOSA locals got a chance to get behind local Olympian Jake Packard at an Optus-run community celebration last week. As the official support network of Australia’s Olympic athletes, Optus hosted the swimmer in-store at Noosa Civic Shopping Centre and invited the community to hear about his road to Rio. Noosa Civic Optus store manager Lucas Sheppard said everyone at the store was excited to get behind Jake, who will compete in the 100m and 4x100 medley relay. “The event was a perfect way to celebrate Jake’s achievements so far and give him an opportunity to thank his support network before he sets off to Rio,” he said. “There are so many people from the local community who are sup-
porting him and we are proud to be a part of that.” Jake grew up in Noosa, often swimming at the Noosa Aquatic Centre, but the humble athlete said there’s not much difference between the NAC and an Olympic pool. “I love going back to Noosa to train just because I am from there and that is where I basically started to swim. But the Olympic pool is pretty much the same but just with a few more grandstand seats,” he said. Jake said securing a spot in the Australian Olympic team made the years of hard work and dedication all worth it. “Three years ago I sat down with Chris (Mooney) and we made a plan, it’s incredible to believe it worked and I’m excited to represent a sport that is synonymous with the Australian Olympic team. I hope to do my country and the local community of
Jack’s all set for track attack NOOSA’S Jack Sipp has now completed round two of the Kumho Tyre Australian V8 Touring car series at Winton Motor Raceway as part of the V8 Supercar Woodstock Super Sprint. The 21-year-old finished sixth for the round out of 17 national competitors, which was a great result for Jack for his first visit to Winton. Jack managed to keep the car straight for the weekend, just missing a stalled car at the start of race three; a moment he said he wouldn’t forget. Jack said he is looking forward to the next round at Queensland Raceway on 22 July as part of the Coates Hire Ipswich V8 Supercar Super Sprint. Test day will take place at noosatoday.com.au
Queensland Raceway the week prior to the event ensuring the car will be well set up and Jack will be comfortable at his home track. “It will be great to be back in the 640HP Holden VE and do some testing. The event will be covered live on FOX Sports Friday, Saturday and Sunday and have an estimated track audience of 60,000 people,” Jack said. Jack made his V8 Supercar debut at Sandown Raceway in Victoria earlier this year. The Kumho Series is now considered the third tier V8 Supercar Series that allows drivers to gain competition miles in V8 Supercars that have previously raced in the main V8 Supercar Series, giving them a platform to move onto a career if they were to succeed at this level.

At the local Noosa event, Jake was thrilled to be united with his family, friends and broader support network who have supported his road to Rio, including his coach Chris Mooney. “My friends, family and girlfriend have played a huge part in supporting my Olympic journey and I’m so thrilled to be able to celebrate with them before I go. I’m lucky to have my girlfriend and her mum coming with me to Rio and I’m touched to know that others close to me will be watching from home,” he said. Jake said his top advice for any young swimmers wanting to make it in the sport is to enjoy every moment and always work hard. “There will be a lot of tough times especially looking back on my experiences and how they have definitely impacted my swimming,” he said.
Noosa local Jake Packard will travel to Rio to compete in the 2016 Olympics. “If you have something that you want to achieve then by all means anything is possible if you put the time and dedication to achieve your ultimate dream.” The young athlete will soon head to Rio but said he can’t wait to com-
pete knowing the Noosa community is behind him the whole way. “It’s such an honour to be backed by a close knit community. It feels like I’m not only representing Australia but also Noosa, so thank you,” he said.
