CFA a big ‘beat-up’ By MONIQUE KUZEFF ACCORDING to federal Labor candidate Eric Kerr, the CFA’s EBA dispute is a big “beat up” by mainstream media that has been hijacked by the Liberal Party as “fuel” for its campaign. Mr Kerr referred to a comment made by Victorian Farmers Federation president Peter Touhey, published in The Age on 22 June, saying “there are 1200 stations where the EBA doesn’t make any difference to volunteers”. He said Mr Touhey confirmed what Labor had been saying “all along”, that the EBA would have no effect on volunteer stations. “It’s all been hyped up and beat up by the media and they’re playing it pretty sick,” Mr Kerr said. “It became such a public thing years ago and they hadn’t had a resolution so it became sensationalised by the press and jumped on by the Liberal Party who registered the trade name “Hands Off the CFA” to fuel their campaign. “They’ve involved the volunteers but they’re not employed so they can’t be included in to the Fair Work Act,” he said. The dispute arose from failing to properly explain to the community and CFA volunteers what the EBA represented, Mr Kerr said. He said it was fuelled by the poor relaying of information about the industrial deal that had caused confusion among CFA volunteers. “A lot of the volunteers are confused and angry because of the tension created from the sensationalism of this issue.

“They want to see their concerns addressed and they want to be a part of the conversation, not a part of a political footy game. “Not many sectors have to publicly explain how their work conditions have to be updated.” While some may argue that the volunteers, who make up about 97 per cent of the CFA workforce, have an indisputable right to have a voice in the decision of the controversial industrial deal, others believe that they aren’t eligible to exercise that right because they are not career fire-fighters. Liberal candidate Sophie Mirabella said that the EBA offered the United Firefighters Union (UFU) an effective veto in up to 50 separate clauses, giving them power to control CFA management and operations. “Local volunteers have told me that under a union-led CFA, volunteer leadership on the fire ground, incident management roles and peer support roles will be taken away in favour of paid staff. “In an environment as vast as ours, government has no chance of paying for a 60,000-strong career fire-fighting service.” She made it clear that if reelected the Turnbull Government would amend legislation to override Labor’s deal to hand the UFU control over the CFA. “Our local volunteers have the right to be consulted about matters that will impact how they do their job protecting the community,” Ms Mirabella said. “This dispute has lasted over 1000 days, but the State Government has given volunteers not a single day to talk about how this decision will affect them.”

$10m Rutherglen bypass pledged By MONIQUE KUZEFF THE Coalition Government has promised to deliver a Rutherglen bypass in a $10 million roads funding package in the case of it being re-elected on 2 July. The announcement was made by Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Darren Chester together with Indi’s Liberal candidate Sophie Mirabella and its Nationals candidate Marty Corboy in Rutherglen on Thursday. While the package would include funding for the planning of the bypass and safety upgrades along Kiewa Valley Highway and Great Alpine Road, the final details are to be determined by the Rutherglen community and VicRoads. “Making our road safer not only improves lives, but in many cases it can also save lives,” Mr Chester said. “It is my expectation this finding will be directed at projects that will improve road safety outcomes at dangerous locations.” For Ms Mirabella roads were one of her top priorities and concerns for the people of Indi and welcomed the Coalition’s funding saying it was “another example” why it was important to have a major party representing people in the electorate. “The $10 million Indi Road Safety Package comes in ad-

“I have been eager to carry on with the work of the late Don Chambers, who advocated strongly for this important project,” Mr Corboy said. “The upgrades to the Kiewa Valley Highway and Great Alpine Road are also important to locals, and the thousands of visitors who drive through our region each year.”

Pool vote part of poll VOTERS in the AlburyCity Council election on 10 September will be asked if they support a new indoor regional aquatic centre that would be built at Lauren Jackson Sports Centre. Council voted to hold the special poll at its Monday night council meeting, which follows an extensive community consultation process open to all residents and has generated about 1200 submissions from individuals and community groups. Earlier this year AlburyCity asked the community to indicate its preferred option from a list of seven options for aquatic facilities for Albury’s future. About 50 per cent of submissions were in support of a regional aquatic facility with a 51.5-metre indoor pool at the Lauren Jackson Sports Centre. There was little support for the two options proposing a 25-metre indoor pool, or closing both the existing facilities in favour of one regional facility. The two recommended options before council are the retention and redevelopment of the existing Albury and Lavington swim centres and no new indoor facility, or a new regional indoor aquatic facility at the Lauren Jackson Sports Centre and retain the Albury Swim Centre. Council has information in relation to the aquatics strategy and options available on AlburyCity’s website. Councillors voted to supply the following background information and ask a 'yes or no' answer question. Council has resolved to further develop design, feasibility

and costing around two possible swimming pool options (inclusive of 1m and 3m springboard diving facilities) for the draft AlburyCity Aquatics Strategy. The two options are: 1. Retain and redevelop the existing council swimming pool facilities at Albury and Lavington OR 2. Retain and redevelop the swimming pool facilities at Albury only and develop a new indoor regional aquatic centre located adjoining the Lauren Jackson Sports Centre site. Question: “Are you in favour of Albury City Council spending up to $50m to build a new FINA (International Swimming Federation) standard aquatic centre and close the Lavington swimming pool facility?” Mayor Henk van de Ven said council had already done extensive community consultation but councillors decided the significance of the required investment warranted a special poll as part of the upcoming election. “We want the best possible picture of what the community wants,” Cr van de Ven said. “Even if we stick with our current pools and don’t build an indoor aquatics facility, it will be a big investment and we need to know what the community wants.” The poll - and the election - will be managed by the NSW Electoral Commission. The poll will cost AlburyCity an estimated $26,000. If it is decided to build a new aquatic facility, it could be at least five years before it opens.

Nationals candidate gets behind Baranduda project

By MONIQUE KUZEFF THE Baranduda Fields project has received further backing from Indi’s Nationals candidate Marty Corboy who has thrown his support behind Wodonga Council’s application in the current round of National Stronger Regions Funding. While Baranduda Fields is already supported by the council’s community investment of $10 million that will be delivered through the next two budgets, the council applied for a further $10 million to fast track stage one. Wodonga Council Mayor Anna Speedie said support from candidates and the Federal Government was “absolutely critical” in delivering the regional sport facility. Mr Corboy said that he was committed to funding projects in regional centres that would provide long-term benefits for the growth of the wider region. “It’s a very important project for the community and, if elected, the Wodonga community can know that I’ll be there strongly advocating for them,” Mr Corboy said. “Wodonga should be confident they would have a voice very close to the (Regional Development Minister Fiona Nash) regarding this application and any other application that comes in the future.” “It’s important to have fit and healthy children and adults

INDI MP Cathy McGowan remains adamant that a one-size fits all childcare funding model would greatly disadvantage families in rural and regional areas, and urged the government to commit funding for “mobile childcare”. With an increasing number of families moving in to the rural and regional areas, Ms McGowan believed more childcare centres were needed in order for parents to be able to “do the work they were trained to do”. Ms McGowan was concerned that the lack of childcare options meant that families in smaller rural towns such as Chiltern, which doesn’t have any childcare services, would have to travel to major centres. Having spoken to some families in rural areas across Indi, she said there were some who were on childcare waiting lists who had to travel up to Albury Wodonga to drop of their children before work. “We need diversity in services such as after school care, holiday care, family day care, long day care, rest bite care because for small country towns if you don’t have a childcare centre, it’s very hard to have that care provided,” Ms McGowan said. “It’s one of those fundamental services that allow people access to work.” Ms McGowan was opposed to what she called the ‘onesize-fits-all’ childcare funding model, saying that the government should direct funding to ‘mobile childcare’ services to

assist rural and regional areas. “They’re all city-based parties, and they don’t understand how important mobile childcare is for rural communities and families. “I’ve had a very poor response so far, and I just don’t think they understand the importance of it in country towns.” Ms McGowan said many families in rural and regional Australia currently relied on the mobile childcare service and that the new funding program failed to take these families into account. “Funding must be allocated on a needs basis,” she said. “The mobile childcare is a good compromise for the country towns, yet it’s under threat for funding.” Ms McGowan told News

Weekly she would continue to lobby the government to guarantee funding for the mobile childcare services. Last week in Chiltern, she had a discussion on the issues around childcare delivery with about 15 mothers and some service providers. A submission to the Indigo Shire Council meeting, and exploring other opportunities for family day care provision were some of the outcomes of the gathering. “I’ll continue to lobby and really push for funding,” she said “We had a really productive meeting in Chiltern, and we are going to work with the local government there and collect the data to find other ways to get the service provided for families.”

MEMBERS from the Albury community got behind the Biggest Morning Tea hosted by residents of the Active Lifestyle Estates Albury on Thursday at their community centre to help raise funds for cancer research. Around 60 people from the community including AlburyCity Council, local health services and family and friends of residents attended the morning tea dressed in a splash of yellow attire to support the Cancer Council Australia, where all the proceeds will go to assist its cancer research. Murray River feat another first for Jacka By MONIQUE KUZEFF THREE months ago Dave Jacka, the world’s first quadriplegic to fly solo around Australia, set-off to tackle the elements of the Murray River on his Paddle Wheel Murray River Expedition. On 28 May, Jacka looked back on such a great feat as he became the world’s first quadriplegic to paddle the 2225km length of the Murray from Lake Hume, NSW, to the sea in Goolwa, SA. But this was not accomplished without great challenges. When he was just 19 years old, Jacka was involved in a motorbike accident that left him a quadriplegic. Unable to regulate his body temperature, Jacka has no movement from his armpits down and only uses about six per cent of his motor functions. Jacka said regulating his body temperature was one of the most difficult challenges he faced during his expedition. “The heat was the biggest challenge; it absolutely pushed me to absolute limits,” Jacka said. “The first two and a half weeks were a nightmare because I can’t control my body temperature and there was extreme heat. “It didn’t drop under 30 degrees for about 18 days, so I could only paddle in the morning until it got too hot. “This meant I could only do shorter distances which impacted on my whole journey - I wouldn’t want to experience those temperatures again.” But Jacka was thrilled to have finally completed his mis-

Here Dave shares some expedition stories with his longest serving support kayaker Trevor Worsley, reflecting Picture: SUPPLIED on the fun and tough times.156107 sion to paddle the length of the Murray River, saying it proved to be a “very mixed experience” that was “tiring, hard but exhilarating at times”. “It was a fantastic experience, and certainly one of the toughest things I’ve ever done both physically and mentally,” he said. “I achieved far more than I thought I could on this journey. “It opened my eyes to where my limitations were, and I exceeded all the limitations I thought I had before undertaking this journey.” During the expedition, Jacka faced another obstacle when a blister on his hand became infected after two months in, with only about 500 kilometres to complete. His hand swelled up and it became extremely painful for him to paddle. “There were moments I became concerned that if it didn’t heal and got worse, it would stop me from completing the trip. It was the constant grind

that did it. “But I prevailed because it is only when you really push yourself that you find out what you can truly achieve.” Jacka thanked the team who went on the expedition with them, saying it was the volunteers and people he met along the way that were the biggest highlight. “There were a lot of times where I felt extremely fortunate to be able to paddle down the Murray River with the support from the team. “The scenery is always changing from dry to wet and land to cliffs and the sunrise and sunsets are absolutely spectacular - I never got sick of that.” As also being the world’s first quadriplegic to fly solo around Australia, the Murray River expedition was just another great challenge he set out to do to prove the potential of those with disabilities and to encourage people to challenge themselves.

LOCAL community groups like Albury Wodonga 4WD Club continue to show their support for the local Carevan as demonstrated at its general meeting on Tuesday night where they presented Carevan with $5000 raised through raffling. The 4WD Club spent eight months raffling off about 10,000 tickets to raise funds, with a quarter of the proceeds directed to Carevan. The club’s efforts came after Carevan missed out on a share of $10,000 grant that AlburyCity Council disbursed to various other not-for-profit services so the club nominated Carevan to be a recipient of their fundraiser. Albury Wodonga 4WD Club raffle co-ordinator Jen Partl said the club agreed to raise funds for the not-for-profit cause because they had done a great effort in providing for the homeless in the area. “It was something unanimous from the club to raise funds for Carevan,” Ms Partl said. “They’re local and the money also stays local. “They’re doing something for our homeless and that was the biggest thing, “Feeding them, giving them social interaction and providing them with sanitary packs, so we wanted to give back to them.”

Carevan ‘Cooking and Caring’ program for Year 9 students. “It came as a surprise with the amount of money they raised in that period of time,” Mr Brabant said. “It’s taken a lot of work and engagement to get that amount of money. “We will direct it more in to our kids cooking and caring program to help develop that which is where kids are able to volunteer to cook for the Carevan and meet the people they’ve been cooking for. Mr Brabant said the program helped to develop a sense of “compassion” in the Year 9 students who volunteer.

One with the homeless LOCAL business owners and staff from across the Border will leave the comfort of their warm homes and beds to participate in Carevan/The River Corporate Sleep Out on Wednesday 3 August during Homelessness Awareness week. The Corporate Sleep Out aims to raise awareness on homelessness and those less fortunate in the local community. It’s about understanding the importance of social inclusion and to encourage “us” and “them” to become “we” to develop a sense of belonging and a sense of identity for everyone, no matter what your circumstance. Carevan has been operating in Albury Wodonga for the past seven years with the brightly coloured caravan. It has raised awareness for the need for poverty reduction and sustainable development in this area. Carevan has over 250 current vol-

unteers that serve on average 300 meals per week Monday to Friday at four site locations in the community. The Carevan programs are not just reactive but proactive and preventive, and they are owned by the community. The Kids Cooking and Caring program allows Year 9 students to cook for the Carevan and meet those in the community who they have been cooking for and thereby helps the students develop a social awareness and compassion for the less fortunate. Carevan has seen thousands of local children participate in the program over the years. The Sun Smiles program where dental students and oral health students go to primary schools with puppets to teach children how to brush their teeth can change the dental health of a generation of children from lower socio economic environments, and give them a better chance in life

to break out of the cycle of poverty. This year’s Corporate Sleep Out will be held at Wodonga Race Club at the Nell Wilson Pavilion, and will kick off at 5.30pm and conclude at 9am the following day. A live broadcast from Matt and Lu from The River from 6am to 9am, guest speakers, live music and inviting warm fire pits should keep everyone warm during dinner which will be provided by Carevan’s Kids Cooking and Caring students. Participants will also enjoy a hearty breakfast the following morning after a cold night sleeping out. Participants will bring their sleeping bags, swags, pillows to keep warm during the night, pulling up on a piece of concrete or grass. Whatever you do, don’t buy too much bike DON’T buy more bike than you can handle. If you’ve been off of motorcycles for a while, you may be surprised by the performance of today’s bikes. Even models with smalldisplacement engines are notably faster and more powerful than they were 10 or 20 years ago. When shopping for a bike, start with one that fits you. When seated, you should easily be able to rest both feet flat on the ground without having to be on tiptoes. Handlebars and controls should be within easy reach. Choose a model that’s easy for you to get on and off the centre stand; if it feels too heavy, it probably is. A smaller model with a 250- to 300-cc engine can make a great starter or commuter bike. If you plan on doing a lot of highway riding, you might want one with an engine in the 500 to 750cc range so you can easily keep up with traffic. Invest in anti-lock brakes. Now available on a wide array of models, antilock brakes are a proven lifesaver. The reason is simple:

Locking up the brakes in a panic stop robs the rider of any steering control. That can easily lead to a skid and crash, which can result in serious injury. ABS helps you retain steering control during an emergency stop, and it can be especially valuable in slippery conditions. Wear the right gear. Jeans, a T-shirt, and sandals are recipes for a painful disaster on a bike. Instead, you want gear that will protect you from wind chill, flying bugs and debris, and, yes, lots of road rash if you should slide out. For maximum protection, go for a leather or other reinforced jacket, gloves, full pants, and over-the-ankle footwear, even in summer. Specially designed jackets with rugged padding and breathable mesh material provide protection as well as ventilation for riding in warm weather. You’ll also want effective eye protection; don’t rely on eyeglasses or a bike’s windscreen. Use a helmet visor or goggles. And keep in mind that car drivers who have hit a motorcycle rider often say

they just didn’t see them, so choose gear in bright colours. Watch for road hazards. A motorcycle has less contact with the pavement than a car. Sand, wet leaves, or pebbles can cause a bike to slide unexpectedly, easily resulting in a spill. Bumps and potholes that you might barely notice in a car can pose serious danger when on a bike. If you can’t avoid them, slow down as much as possible before encountering them, with minimal steering input. Railroad tracks and other hazards should be approached as close to a right angle as possible, to reduce the chances of a skid. Be ready to roll. Before each ride, do a quick walkaround to make sure your lights, horn, and directional signals are working properly. Check the chain, belt, or shaft and the brakes. And inspect the tires for wear and make sure they’re set at the proper pressure. Motorcycle mechanics say they routinely see worn-out brakes and improperly inflated tires that greatly increase safety risks.

MOTOR cycle racing can be a very exciting sport especially when you throw a dose of unpredictable weather is thrown in and the latest round of the Moto GP championship held at the famous and iconic Assen raceway in the north of the Netherlands proved no exception. After two enthralling races in the Moto 2 and Moto 3 classes, the later coming down to the wire with Francesco Bagnaia taking an historic first win for himself and the Indian company Mahindra by the 0.18 seconds. The Moto GP race proved to be equally as exciting after the first race was abandoned due to a heavy downpour of rain. A shortened second race started on a wet track with Aussie rider Jack Miller riding exceptionally well in very difficult conditions to take his first Moto GP. He is the first Australian to win a Moto GP race since Casey Stoner back at Phillip Island in 2012 and the first satellite rider to do so since 2006. Certainly an effort to be proud of! Locally there has been plenty of riding going on with the Albury Wodonga motor cycle club having run a very successful moto cross meeting this month as well as a practice day on both tracks down on the Lincoln causeway. Albury was also well represented at the Fink desert rally earlier this month with several riders competing and completing the event in a super effort. I was also fortunate enough to take part in a RAT (Riders Association Triumph) ride at the end of last month heading up the King Valley via Whitfield and onto Mansfield before stopping for lunch at the Tatong Tavern. This is another terrific ride with a truly amazing lunch destination. It was a little English style tavern where staff was very friendly and accommodating to a large group of motorcycle riders and I could highly recommend the ride and the destination. The avalanche of exciting new models also continues as we have just received as a demo the all new and very exciting to ride Yamaha MT10. With a motor derived from the award-winning Yamaha YZF-R1 which has been re-tuned to suit its naked style and bristling with the latest technology such as selectable rider modes, traction control and electronic cruise control, it is one very exciting bike to ride! Dirt bike riders will also be excited as Yamaha has just released the 2017 YZF250 and YZF450 and we have both these in stock. The first half of 2016 has certainly been exciting and I can’t wait to see what the second half brings!

Clocking in at well over two hours, this one still leaves you wanting far, far less. After a Saturday night session, the whole family is hating on Independence Day: Resurgence, with three out of 10 the typical mark. First-born child says the film was made up overnight by a 15-year-old in a basement - and he’s 14, so he’d know. Twenty years after the original battle, Earth has adopted much alien technology from the last fight and feels ready for the next stanza. A 300-mile diameter, angrylooking alien mother ship that straddles the entire Atlantic Ocean soon puts paid to that idea. They’re here for our core, and it looks like they’ll get it. Many lasers, and not much light, ensue. The original film was a lovable popcorn classic, and had landmark special effects for its time. This one upsells the special effects from fries to a McFlurry, but leaves the film with a small, cold, barren pea of a heart. A million minor characters

Local Sport Millynn bags Benalla run By PAUL INGWERSEN AFTER many years of absence from the sport, Wodonga’s Paul Millynn returned in style, outsprinting his remaining limit riders to take the Ian Bulliss memorial Benalla to Wangaratta road race on Sunday. A freezing morning saw riders rugged up and choosing shoe covers and long gloves, with the less confident in leg warmers. Former Albury Wodonga Club president Rohan Christmas and Bended Elbow rider Charly McMillan made their intentions of a hot fast race for the scratch bunch clear, opting for a skin suit and short sleeves respectively. While the frost had melted, the mercury was barely over 3 degrees as a strong limit bunch headed up Kilfeera Road, with a 20 minutes start on the back markers for the 63km journey. While less of a start than in previous years, this limit bunch looked strong despite many riders being new to racing. Paul Burns saw his chances disappear up the road,

missing his start time and having to chase solo against a dozen riders for 15km before making contact. This effort may well have been the ride of the day, but proved futile as they hit the hills, and one by one the limit bunch disintegrated. At the back of the race, the scratch bunch was smashing along the course, and just after Greta had made up four minutes to the block bunch. By that stage the limit group had consolidated to a handful of riders, passing through Glenrowan with thoughts turning to possible victory. The remainder of their bunch was sprinkled like crumbs along the course, being swept up into small groups and creeping home. The third bunch on the road had been stuck in noman’s land and shattered into small groups on the rolling hills. As the combined block and scratch group passed the small bunches of dropped riders, they had a scent of victory. The scratch riders turned the screws on the rise to Glenrowan, popping some block riders, before winding up to 70 km/h on the old highway towards Wangaratta

with a small group and what they thought to be victory in their sights. It wasn’t to be, as the limit group reduced to just four riders was still further up the road and out of sight of the galloping scratch bunch. In the sprint for the line Paul Millynn showed strength to outsprint, Matt Chambers who in only his second race couldn’t quite come to terms with the initial acceleration. The Bended Elbow’s Stacey Loccisano ensured the men didn’t have it all their way, picking up a very impressive third place, and with a good gap to Stephen Dahl from the Jones St Cyclery team in fourth place. Scratch had consumed all other riders on the road, but sprinted across the line a minute later. Some thinking they were going for victory, while others chasing fastest time. In the end, a well-rested Miles Stewart from Wagga took fastest time, a few metres in front of the Bended Elbow’s Brad Rose who had swapped off consistently all day.
