Boxes of hope By JOLENE OGLE TEWANTIN State School students hope to brighten the lives of their East Timorese counterparts with hundreds of educational care packages sent to a school this week. The parcels, in the form of decorated shoeboxes are now on their way to Sao Miguel (St Michael) school, about 30 minutes west of Dili, and included exercise books, rulers, erasers, pens and pencils as well as personal items from each student. The community school has 150 kindergarten and 250 primary school students, and the area also caters for several other schools that are in need of basic educational supplies, but Sao Miguel receives no help from the Ministry of Education in Timor. This is the ninth year Tewantin State School has supported the shoebox project in partnership with the Tewantin and Cooroy Community Bank branches of Bendigo Bank and Cooroy and Noosa Rotary Clubs. The 600 shoeboxes from Tewantin will join 1800 others from Cooroy, Coolum and Pacific Paradise State Schools to create a shipment that will change the lives of 2400 East Timorese kids. Tewantin State School principal Corrie Connors said the school was delighted to be involved with the program that started in 2008. “It’s been great for all students to get involved and give something back,” she said. “Our student leaders have been actively involved with the project this year and all our students have had a ball putting the care parcels together. “It’s going to be great to see the results of their hard work with the great support of their families. Each student also enclosed something small of theirs such as a soft toy or a tennis ball. “It added something simple but personal to each box. It was quite the

moment when the kids held up their boxes on assembly,” Corrie added. Tewantin Community Bank manager Wayne Hoens said the project continued to build on something special. “Our Bendigo Bank branches are all about giving back to communities and in this case the recipients will be international ones,” she said. “Last year when the shoeboxes arrived more than 3000 kids turned

up to receive one, so the need is there. We’re proud to share in a project that gets educational material to where it’s needed most.” Mr Hoens said the project was about community partnership. “We’re delighted to collaborate with the Rotary Clubs of Cooroy and Noosa on this project. Noosa Van Lines get the boxes to Melbourne and then Rotary get the shoeboxes to

the school once they land in Timor Leste. Without each of us doing our part it wouldn’t work,” he said. Everyone involved in the project will then look forward to the video and photos of the boxes being opened in a few months. Interest continues to be expressed in bringing some of the Sao Miguel students to state schools on the coast in coming years to advance their learning even further.

Deal signed on hospital future THE future of Noosa Hospital is looking bright with Noosa MP Glen Elmes announcing on Monday 20 June a guaranteed 30-year lease. Mr Elmes was joined by Shadow Health Minister John-Paul Langbroek at the Noosa Hospital to make the announcement that the new lease plus $5 million annual funding for the emergency department has been secured by the LNP State Opposition. “The current contractual arrangement between the State Government and Ramsay Healthcare is due to expire in June 2020 and local residents need the assurance that a legally binding agreement will ensure the emergency department remains open and the hospital’s capacity to provide beds to public patients continues,” he said. Mr Elmes said the 30year lease was guaranteed regardless of which political party made up the next Queensland Government.

Ramsay Health state manager Lloyd Hill said the extension of the lease to 2050 made for a great news day for the Noosa community. “Noosa Hospital is a unique hospital in that it treats both public and private patients in the one facility,” he said. “It offers choice to everyone in the community so any move by the government to secure the long-term services ... is a fantastic move.” Under the extended lease, all existing services will remain including the intensive care facility, but there is no word on a birthing suite for the Noosa population. Mr Elmes said he doesn’t believe any provisions have been made for a birthing suite at Noosa Hospital and while he would support a birthing suite, the decision was up to the health care provider. Mr Hill said the looming end of the 2020 lease restricted any future planning, but said the security offered by the extended

lease meant the hospital could now start planning for the future. “This statement today allows us to start planning for services for the future,” he said. “Today gives us that opportunity to start looking at what we can provide for the Noosa community as we move forward today.” Mr Elmes said the extended lease and funding for the emergency department would mean more public medical procedures to cater for the changing age and social profile of the Noosa community. “On average, the Noosa Hospital admits 60 patients per day and employs more than 400 staff across a range of clinical and nonclinical professions, which makes the future of the hospital integral to the future of the Noosa region,” he said. “The Noosa Hospital provides an outstanding service to the community. This LNP policy provides certainty for its future, the health of residents and job security for employees.”

Village Bicycle back on track By MEGAN OGLE AFTER months of debate, Noosa Council has approved a material change of use for he Village Bicycle restaurant that will see the popular nightspot operate until midnight four nights a week. At the general committee meeting on Monday 13 June, and after vigorous debate, councillors voted to allow Village Bicycle to operate until midnight for four nights a week, which was ratified at the ordinary meeting on Thursday 16 June. The approval is accompanied by a number of other conditions including a requirement for the owners of Village Bicycle to construct a sound-barrier fence, a limit to the number of patrons in the venue and a four-night trading trial period until June 2017. Noosa Creative Precinct member Tim Nixon said the approval was a win for local businesses in the Noosa Junction.

Bats relocate to old roost on island RESIDENTS living near Wallace Park may have a reprieve from the impact of neighbouring flying-foxes as Noosa Council confirms recent reports suggesting the flyingfoxes have moved back to Goat Island. Council’s principal environment officer Peter Milne said it is normal for flyingfoxes to reduce in numbers at this time of the year. “But it is great news that they have decided to go back to their old roost site on Goat Island. Of course, being highly mobile, flying-foxes can pretty well roost anywhere in the shire, and it’s impossible to predict where that might be," he said. Mayor Tony Wellington said he was pleased to hear the flying-fox colony had moved on. “It is essential the flyingfoxes are not disturbed, and so I would urge people to stay away from Goat Island. Some of these flying-foxes have likely experienced dispersals in other areas and would thus

The movement of the colony comes just weeks after Wallace Park residents threatened council with legal action over the flying-fox roost and demanded a cull of the colony that has plagued the area for years.

Campaign focus on apprentices By MEGAN OGLE NOOSA’S youth are set to benefit from an injection of funding as youth unemployment tops the agenda for major political parties. In the lead up to the federal election, both the ALP and LNP have announced plans to get local youth into the work force with a focus on training and incentives for employers. The LNP has announced a jobs plan that will see up to 20,000 young Queenslanders in jobs, encourage apprentices to finish their training and incentivise employers to train and retain workers. Noosa MP Glen Elmes said the plan provides strong incentives for businesses to train and retain young workers, which will be a major boost to employment in the Noosa electorate. “The LNP’s plan will provide Noosa businesses with support to recruit young Queenslanders, encourage them to take on apprentices to help them finish their training and provide a boost to employers to cover workers’ compensation premiums,” Mr Elmes said. “Our plan includes

support for up to 20,000 Queensland tradies over four years by contributing $500 towards new tools for apprentices upon completion of their training.” The plan also includes a $5000 incentive for Queensland businesses who take on a new apprentice from beginning to end and $4000 grants over 12 months to assist small businesses with recruitment and start-up costs for eligible Queenslanders from 15 to 24 years old who are unemployed and not enrolled in full-time education or training. The ALP has also announced a jobs plan focused on apprenticeships including the reopening of the Noosa TAFE campus. ALP candidate for Wide Bay Lucy Stanton recently submitted a joint proposal with Noosa Chamber of Commerce to the minister’s review of TAFE campuses. “The proposal submitted to the minister’s review of TAFE is a solid plan to retain Noosa TAFE and to re-open it with a serious commitment to training,” Ms Stanton said. “It is way past the time to clean out the dodgy private

colleges undermining vocational training in this country and back public TAFE all the way.” Ms Stanton also said federal Labour has announced plans to create “blue-collar as well as white-collar jobs”. “We will require that one in 10 of the workers employed in our major public works infrastructure projects is an Australian apprentice. “We’ll back this up with 15,000 new places for apprentices of all ages right across the nation,” Ms Stanton said. “Under federal Labor’s New Jobs Tax Cut, small businesses will be able to claim a tax deduction of up to $20,000 per worker to offset the wages of up to five new employees. Labor’s policy will be targeted at small businesses with turnover of less than $2 million. “This actually helps businesses from the Noosa area to hire Australians who are finding it hard to get work. “Importantly, these include the unemployed under 25 or over 55 and parents or carers returning to work.”

Planned burns for park’s link NOOSA is about to get smoky with the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) to soon start planned burns throughout the region. Dates for the burns in the greater Noosa areas are dependent on weather conditions, but QPWS senior ranger Justin Enslin said the burns in the heart of Noosa would involve multiple agencies. “The link section of Noosa National Park behind Noosa police station, and Noosa Hill in the Headland section of the park, are two areas identified for burning this year,” Mr Enslin said. “Noosa’s national park, nature refuges and green areas make it a special place, but we need to manage the fuel loads to reduce risk to residents in the wildfire season and also to ensure the overall health of the forest ecosystem. “The link section burn will take place in the bushland area between Cooyar Street and the Noosa Dolphins Rugby Union fields, near the Junction shopping precinct.” For the planned burn, QPWS will be assisted by the Queensland Fire and Emergency Service and the Queensland Rural Fire Service, which will be tasked with protecting infrastructure on the burn perimeter such as the Oz-Care aged care facility and the Salvation Army houses. “The Noosa Shire Council is providing support for the burns, and part of the Girraween nature refuge man-

Picture: Queensland Government aged by council will be included,” Mr Enslin said. “Conditions for burning are ideal for some coastal areas after recent rainfall, and the burns will help to achieve conservation outcomes and reduce fuel loads. QPWS has limited periods in which to conduct burns, especially these more complex burns next to urban areas that require multi agency input.” Mr Enslin said agencies were working to minimise impacts on local residents such as smoke, changed traffic con-

ditions and some temporary road closures. “We urge people with respiratory or other health problems to seek medical advice on mitigating the effects of smoke inhalation," Mr Enslin said. Young entrepreneurs get down to business NOOSA District State High School year 11 students are about to get down to business as part of the annual Australian Business Week (ABW) program. The one-week intensive program is now in its 13th year at the school and is designed to show students what it is like to run a multi-million dollar company and make decisions that have real outcomes. ABW co-ordinator Alison Rexa said each team has all the usual challenges that companies face in the week the cohort is together. “This year students will be running their very own resort simulation,” she said. “With the help of business and teaching mentors they will discover the variety of skills needed to be part of a successful business in the 21st century.” Through the week, teams of students will perform tasks having formed and named a company, with each student nominating for a role such as a general manager or marketing, operations or finance manager. “They will work from an ABW manual covering the key business areas, making decisions about price, product, their target market, staffing and training,” Ms Rexa said. “The 15 teams must also develop a marketing strategy and host a trade display complete with promotional material and produce a 30-second commercial featuring their business.” The program will end with each team preparing a written company report about their company’s performance as well as deliver an oral presentation to an audience including business people. “It makes for a full week but will leave each participant with some valuable skills and the courage to make a difference in their chosen field,” Ms Rexa said. Madison Rice, who died earlier this month after a tragic accident in Scotland, will be laid to rest in Noosa after her family and the local community raised over $33,162 to bring her home. Madison’s step-father Alix Welsh said he was grateful to

Skills, strength combo for success MUSCLE power and human strength was the winner at the recent Human Powered Vehicle challenge held on the Gold Coast. Good Shepherd Lutheran College’s first ever Human Powered Vehicle team (HPV) is thrilled with their results at the recent HPV Challenge on the Gold Coast, placing fourth out of a field of 30 competing schools from across Queensland and New South Wales. Having only formed the team two weeks prior to the race, the rooky group of Year 10 to 12 students - made up of eight riders and two pit crew took turns to race continuously for eight hours using only their muscle strength to propel the vehicle at a top speed of 76km/h. Good Shepherd Lutheran College director of ICT Scott Josephs said the team did a

great job competing against other schools throughout the gruelling competition. “Eight hours, 222 laps and 246.4km and the GSLC HPV team were in an epic battle for fourth place that went on for over an hour,” he said. “Special mention to Ricky Flockhart for a best lap time of 1:51:9 minutes and Mac Smith for the longest ride of 50 minutes.” According to Mr Sinclair, Head of ICT Curriculum and Innovation at Good Shepherd Lutheran College, the program also brings together students with sporting prowess and engineering skills and gives them the opportunity to race vehicles of their own construction and test them in real world environments. “It also gives students the opportunity to utilise science, technology engineering and

mathematics (STEM), which is also an important part of the school curriculum,” Mr Sinclair said. “Through the use of the current trike, we are fostering an interest at the college in engineering and manufacturing, and while the main components have been purchased for our trike, the students have been actively involved in modification and improvement of the trike’s capabilities.” “Our future goal is to have a team of students construct and race their own custom trike.” The Good Shepherd HPV team will compete in a total of four races this year, with the focus on competing at the Maryborough Technology Challenge in September which is a 24-hour race that brings together schools from all around Australia.

THE much-loved Noosa Long Weekend festival has received a boost, thanks to almost $30,000 in funding from the State Government’s Art’s Funding program. Member for Noosa Glen Elmes announced the funding and said the $29,595 grant will be invested in the Long Weekend Artways installation. “The renowned and highly respected 13 day arts and cultural festival is designed to be affordable and available to the whole community, and is deserving of government investment,” he said “The festival provides inspiration and opportunities for local artists, attracts local interstate and international participants and audiences; helps to strengthen the economy and boosts the much-loved arts and culture sector.” The festival was formed in 2002 by David Williamson, one of Australia’s foremost playwrights and his wife and author Kristin Williamson together with a number of other arts supporters here in Noosa. Festival president Johanne Wright said she was “over the moon” that four local artists have been supported by the

Rates rise to pay for 84 new projects RESIDENTS can expect a rise in rates and more than 84 capital works projects after Noosa Mayor Tony Wellington handed down the 2016-17 budget last week. In a public meeting held on Thursday 16 June, councillor Wellington presented a “responsible and practical” budget announcing a 1.9 per cent rise in rates and a $23.1 million capital works program. The 2016-17 budget sees the council contributing to the $1.7 million required to upgrade two high-priority intersections, one at Hilton Terrace and Ernest Street, and another at Poinciana Avenue and Moorindil Street, Tewantin. Just under $2 million will also go toward the council’s Rufous Street Precinct development and digital hub at Peregian Beach. Plus, there are allocations to improve council facilities such as the Leisure Centre and Noosa Aquatic Centre. A suite of hinterland projects are included in the program including a sealed bus turnaround facility at Pomona

State School where motorist and pedestrian safety has long been a concern. The draft budget, to be ratified on 29 June, also includes a $5 increase to the Heritage Levy but no increases to waste charges. “Waste charges won’t change but a small increase on the minimum general rating categories will ensure that we continue to maintain our current levels of service,” Cr Wellington said. “The 1.9 per cent increase to the general rate is based on the Local Government Association of Queensland’s Cost Index which measures the annual increase required to deliver council services each year. “We are continuing to maintain our existing assets whilst also delivering some new initiatives without the need for a rate rise above the cost index,” he said. Noosa’s Tourism Levy, paid by businesses across the shire, will be rebadged and will rise slightly to support economic development. “It will become the Tourism

and Economic Levy, and will increase by 5 per cent. “The funds going to Tourism Noosa will remain unchanged, with the additional income from the increase – around $170,000 per year – going to fund projects that specifically target economic enhancement,” Cr Wellington said. “These projects will support council’s local economic plan, developed last year in consultation with stakeholders and the community.” Other priorities in the budget include the continued resealing of the council-controlled sections of CooroyNoosa Road plus safety improvements on David Low Way at Castaways Beach. The budget also includes additional resources to support Bushcare groups and a thorough audit of the council’s energy use, which is a key action of the new Emission Reduction Policy and an essential step towards developing a zero emissions target.

Noosa Open Studios deputy chair Gabi Dick said funds raised from the roasting event would go towards the main event to take place in August. “Monies raised from this function will assist the Noosa Open Studios Committee to promote our August event and subsidise the buses providing studio tours each morning and afternoon during the three-day event,” she said. “Noosa Open Studios is happening from Friday 19 August through to Sunday 21 August. Small club makes a big impact Ron Laneâ€™s

people DESPITE its outstanding success, and for reasons that are hard to understand, it would have to be one of the best kept secrets in our local sporting community. Its name is the Impact Boxing Academy Cooroy and in the tough unforgiving sport of amateur boxing, the club has definitely earned that most sought after virtue of all. Respect. Under the control of owner and coach Mark Evans, and backed up by a small group of local people, their hard work and dedication is really starting to pay dividends. However, as we sat in the dining room of his home in Blueberry Drive and chattered about the future, of not only his club but boxing in general, one thing became apparent. Here was a man of passion, not only for the sport but also the welfare of the Impact members, members who proudly refer to themselves as the Impact Family. It is this feeling that creates the atmosphere of unity â€“ one for all and all for one. Mark summed it up beautifully when he said: â€œThe academy revolves mainly around the youth of the community.â€? The gym itself is not easy to find. Situated some 20 metres behind the family home, in among trees at the end of the driveway, this small building with a verandah on the right leaves one feeling curious. But immediately on entering you become aware that you are indeed in a fightersâ€™ gym. Small, compact, with everything in place. To the left of the entrance are some exercise bikes and a few weights. Immediately in front of you is the ring itself. Then on the right down three steps to the next level. This houses the heavy punching bags and on the wall to the left, the mandatory big mirrors.

Adorning the walls are photos, photos of not only world professional champions but also the local members. A motto attached to the wall carries a strong message â€“ â€œPain is Temporary â€“ Pride is Foreverâ€?. The atmosphere is good. When arriving for the evening training sessions members are greeted with a smile and a joke and sometimes, for the young girls who have just embarked on their career, a friendly hug of encouragement. Then the evening training session starts and all goes well. That basic principal of all successful sporting clubs, discipline, is obvious but not over the top. When Australian national and Olympic boxing coach Kevin Smith visited the club some time ago he was astounded. Standing on the verandah in late afternoon and listening to the bird calls that could be heard coming from the surrounding bush, Smith remarked: â€œThe results this small club has achieved are remarkable. But to experience the atmosphere in which the fighters train shows why.â€? Impact Boxing Academy came into being 11 years ago. â€œWhen asked about the name Impact, Mark, who makes his living as a painting contractor,

said: â€œI thought that if I was going to do this I definitely wanted to make an impact so people would take notice and, hopefully, the club would grow. â€œNow because of the support and success that we have achieved it has become my life. So, I suppose you could say the name was a good choice. â€œWe now have a stable of 16 fighters plus an incredible team of supporters and this year we have had some great results. â€œOur success at the recent Australian Youth Titles on the Gold Coast were remarkable. â€œAdd to that some of our team is not only fighting at international level but also winning. But unfortunately, till now, boxing has little or no publicity. I am hoping with our success this year things will change.â€? Mark, who comes from a family of boxers, followed the family tradition. However before doing so he spent 10 years in martial arts training at the Tong Long Kung Fu School in Nambour, seven of which he spent working as an instructor. Starting in October last year the club really gained momentum when Mark was appointed Home Coach to the Junior World Championships in Russia and Sam Cameron-Hands of Impact boxed on the team. A week after returning home Sam, along

with fellow club mate James Beazley, flew to Europe as members of the Queensland team to box against the Germans for the Brandenburg Cup, which they won. This year 2016 saw the success continue. For the people of the Impact Family, it has definitely been outstanding â€“ and remember itâ€™s only June. The first big event of the year came when Mark was named President of Boxing Queensland. Add to this he was also appointed to the position of Queensland Talent Identification Coach by Boxing Australia. In the ring the fighters also kept up the momentum. Eight made the state team, the biggest number ever to come from one club and contest the Australian Youth Championships. They came home with an incredible five gold and three silver medals. Then came Poland and the Black Diamond International Tournament. From the quite little country town of Cooroy, training in a small gym among the trees in Cudagree Estate, just off Blueberry Drive, to the stadiums of Europe, Impactâ€™s Brock Shelby and Taylah Robertson made history by winning the clubâ€™s first ever gold medals at international level. Another indication of the respect that Mark now commands is the fact that towards the end of the year he has been appointed by Boxing Australia to conduct a high performance training camp for the Australian National Team at the A.I.S. in Canberra. With the Impact Boxing Academy now turning out state, national and international champions, it is to be hoped that some local business houses will give thought to considering sponsorship. Let us never forget that the people of Impact Boxing Academy are Our People.

Men’s Shed a drawcard SINCE opening their woodworking shed last year, the Noosa Men’s Shed has become one of the most popular organisations in the Noosa community. Noosa Men’s Shed president John Williams said the club had expanded at a great rate, accepting about six new members each month to a healthy total of 115 members. The club now offers wood working, metal working, art classes and recently held the first Pit Stop day where members could have their health checked by local university students. Held on Wednesday 15 June, students and staff from the University of the Sunshine Coast and Noosa Council staff dropped in to the Men’s Shed where members could get a range of health issues checked including their blood pressure, to make sure they don’t blow a gasket. Mr Williams said the day was a great success and members just kept coming. “I think they like finding new friends, connecting, networking or just finding somewhere to belong,” he said. Mr Williams said men aged 18 and over were welcomed to join the Men’s Shed and enjoyed the many activities on offer from painting to leather work to woodwork and cooking classes that would hopefully be available soon. Bags released with a bang LOCALS gathered to celebrate the release of the first 1000 Boomerang Bags into the Noosa community at the Bent Banana on Sunday 19 June. Boomerang Bags project manager Desire Gralton thanked volunteers, local businesses and community members for helping to “break the plastic bag chain”. “All these bags were locally made by a great group of volunteers, and today is really about thanking them for their efforts,” Desire said.

“They were made from generous donations of fabrics, they were made for the community, by the community, some sewn at home, some by sewing groups and others through our regular sewing bees at the Boomerang Bag pop up shop in the Junction. To date, the program has saved 7.5 tonnes of plastic going to landfill with almost 24,000 bags made by 31 Boomerang Bags communities across Australia. “The problem with plastic is that we use way too much of it, and we use it for the wrong

applications. Why would you use a product that is made from a finite resource which never ever breaks down, for items that we use only once and then discard?” Desire said. “We use eight billion plastic bags per year in Australia alone. And it never, ever goes away.” Boomerang Bags are now available at the Bent Banana, Peregian Beach, where you can borrow a bag or purchase a special Bent Banana reusable bag.

THE LNP’s candidates for Fairfax and Fisher are promoting debt funding for the Sunshine Coast Airport expansion from the Federal Government amounting to $180 million to go on ratepayers’ credit cards. They are not revealing that debt servicing charges hidden in SCC’s rates with this additional $180 million loan would amount to about $300 per year per household. Green with a gun AS A volunteer firefighter, licensed firearms owner and Greens candidate for Wide Bay I need to correct the misinformation that is being spread about the Greens about legal gun ownership and bushfire management. The main Australian magazine for shooters has been running a long-term scare campaign against the Greens by misrepresenting their position on guns. Contrary to this publication’s statements the Greens support legal and responsible gun ownership and firearm use. The Greens definitely support our current gun laws and have NO intention of disarming us. The Greens believe that our current gun laws are effectively preventing American-style mass shootings. We also know that guns are necessary, for feral animal control and to put down injured or suffering stock on properties and farms. The Greens appreciate that shooting is a sport many Australians participate in and, as a licensed firearm owner who enjoys target shooting, I would not represent a party that did not support responsible, legal gun ownership. I WOULD like to draw attention to the amount of newspaper littering we have on our local streets three times per week. I will use my small street as an example. This morning after the delivery of the paper Noosa Today I counted 23 papers strewn all over the nature strips, road or driveways. My street has 15 houses, five are at present unoccupied due to recent sales, they are holiday rentals or the owners are away. The back driveway of a resort had five papers on the driveway which never get picked up. One house had for some reason three papers. We have two driveways so we got two papers. When you take into account the delivery of the Noosa News twice a week you basically get the same news delivered three times and a huge amount of waste gets put straight into the bin. When you also take into consideration that most resorts have a stand with the local papers and outside real estate offices and supermarkets the local paper is provided, it’s a total overkill and shocking waste. Now I appre-

ciate the fact that people get up early to deliver these papers, but there has to be some solution. I suggest that people either opt out of delivery or register their name to have a paper delivered. What baloney I AM always amused and often laugh at the ludicrous baloney expressed by the anti-coal climate change alarmists. Steve Hall (NT 16 June) should take the time to read the BoM’s website on the effects of El Nino and La Nina on our climate before blaming the warm nights and extreme weather events on climate change. Climate change: It’s like ordering someone to fix a flat tyre when they don’t own a car. If the problem doesn’t exist, neither does the solution. Would Steve Hall please tell the readers of Noosa Today without coal, gas and oil, where is the energy going to come from to maintain our standard of living or take millions of Asians and Africans out of poverty? Without oil how are the mining escalators going to dig up the coal to fire our power stations to satisfy our insatiable thirst for energy or the ore to make batteries, cars, solar panels, wind turbines, acrylic, resins, aluminium, life-giving pharmaceuticals and much more? Products we take for granted and which are being denied to the poverty stricken Asians and Africans by the Anti Coal-Climate Change Alarmists? Without oil, gas and coal life on earth would not be a Green utopian paradise. Mankind would still be living in caves and would be wondering what to do with the wheel. Thank goodness for coal, a fuel that has taken us from the iron age to landing a robot on Mars and beyond, a fuel that is taking millions out of poverty. Colin Bond, Tewantin.

Deadly debt EVERY day you can read about the debt the Rudd/Gillard left us through overspending. Also the now deficit under the Coalition from $10 billion when elected to now $30 billion. Then today I read about (and I quote,) “gross debt largely money raised from government bonds was $150 billion and is now $420 billion." Just a couple of petty and trivial questions I would like answered before 2 July. Regarding the Rudd/Gillard debt created mainly by the cash handouts under the title economic stimulus package. How many of those that are now objecting to it returned theirs to the Treasury or donated it to a charity? As for the now current debt under the Coalition growing every day which although frightening is no different to the majority of households and businesses everywhere trying to survive in today's forever changing world, but of course a lot smaller amount. Without debts there would be no banks (or Cash Converters). So I ignore the letters of doom because Mr Turnbull and Mr Shorten at the moment are going around offering billions in dollars and sweeteners if we elect them into parliament which gives them access to the money tree and slush fund. Alas the other parties in this free for all will not even get a sniff of the trough or ever get to see it, just like us happy little vegemites who keep electing one or the other then during their term criticise them. Can't afford it THE age pension is determined by the Federal Government, whereas the various states decided what discounts and similar provisions are given to their residents. There can be vast differences between states in such matters as vehicle registration and public transport fares. I wrote recently to both Premier Palaszczuk and Prime Minister Turnbull on this subject. The Premier responded but the PM has not, no doubt because it is outside his control. Quick off the mark to digitise STAR Noosa has downsized their office and upsized their sales as they move into the digital era of today’s generation. Star principal Vicki Cooper said the move to smaller premises was in keeping with the shift to a faster online sales market. “It’s all happening online now; people see you online and in newspapers, they don’t go in to offices as much anymore unless it’s to sign documents,” Vicki said. But the shift to the 21st century doesn’t mean Star Noosa has lost its connection with the buyer or seller, quite the opposite. “We have changed the layout in the new office so it’s inviting and open - the space will be used to talk with clients about their needs and to sign paperwork so the atmosphere is more relaxed and warm,” Vicki said. With over 25 years of experience in the industry, with eight of those years in Peregian Beach, Vicki said a change in the market, whether buying or selling, wasn’t anything new. Always a straight-shooter, Vicki said she had seen a “bounce back” in the market since the Global

Songs to raise the roof SONGS Remain have been rocking out to Led Zeppelin classics for over a decade and are still as passionate and persuasive as their early years. Big rewards for singers’ big notes BE enthralled by spine-tingling performances from Australia’s best emerging opera divas and a tenor as seven hopefuls battle for the top prize of $15,000 in the Dame Joan Sutherland Award (DJSA) 2016 on Friday 22 July in Noosa. The bi-annual DJSA is regional Australia’s richest and most prestigious opera award founded by Noosa Federation of the Arts (NFA) to help further the careers of Australian opera singers aged 20-34 in all categories from soprano to bass. The live opera event where the audience vote counts is part of the Noosa Long Weekend program. For the first time in the DJSA’s 22-year history, seven contestants (instead of six) will proceed to the exciting finals showdown. NFA artistic director Brad Jarrett said the calibre of singers this year was “exceptional” and it was tough at the auditions in Brisbane in

June to whittle the number of entrants from 26 down to seven finalists. Four NSW finalists will pit their only instrument, their voice, against two finalists from Queensland plus a singer from WA. Have your say about the best voice on the night by voting at interval in the People’s Choice Award. Getting set for surfing festival - cowabunga! THE Noosa Festival of Surfing will return in 2017 with the official dates for next year’s festival locked in. The Laguna Real Estate Noosa Festival of Surfing will return from 4 to 11 March 2017. The World Tandem Surfing Championships were brought to Noosa in 1999 and Stand up paddle surfing was incorporated into the Festival in 2007 with live entertainment and fund-raising auctions also being held. FROM just five members meeting at Pomona in 2003, Slow Food Noosa is now one of the region’s most proactive community groups quickly spreading the message of Slow Food. Designed around the ethos of choosing local foods, Slow Food Noosa has been working tirelessly to spread the word throughout the community through a number of projects including funding for edible gardens in local schools and programs such as the Sowing Serenity horticultural program at Noosa Carramar Care Dementia unit. Slow Food Noosa president Erika Hackett said Slow Food Noosa was passionate about the local food system and want to instil farmer autonomy, secure food security and build a healthier community, and this year representatives from Slow Food Noosa will again travel to the Terra Madre festival in September in Italy, a global gathering of Slow Food enthusiasts, where Noosa’s local produce will be on show. Ms Hackett said the festi-

val was a fantastic opportunity to share knowledge and produce with the wider world. “We are sending produce to Italy to broaden an understanding of the local produce and to raise awareness of the type of agriculture and industry within the Noosa region,” Ms Hackett said. Some of the local produce on show will include products from Fresh Box, Cooloola Berries and Buchi Kombucha, which will be showcased in a bushtucker taste workshop. Upon return to Noosa, the delegates will share their new information with members and guests at Slow Food Noosa’s October breakfast. Ms Hackett said the delegates can attend the festival, thanks to support from local businesses and Tourism Noosa, who have provided a grant to the organisation. “The festival is a fantastic forum to instil farmer autonomy, food security, sustainable practices from farm to plate and create a healthier ecosystem and, in turn, a healthier community in all its facets,” she said. With over 100,000 members and 1 million support-

ers, the Slow Food movement is one of the world’s fastest growing, grassroots organisations. “Noosa is one of Australia’s largest groups, and we are fortunate to have a large number of producers within our catchment,” Ms Hackett said. “We are also fortunate to have a community that is passionate about supporting local producers and enjoying the bounty of our local agricultural industry.” Each month, Slow Food Noosa hosts informative breakfasts with a range of speakers who share their knowledge and experience in all things farming, local produce and gardening. The next event will be held on Thursday 30 June at Peppers Noosa Resort and Villas, Little Hastings Street, Noosa Heads, at 7.45am for an 8am start. The guest speaker will be Luke Stacey from Naturaleza Farm who will talk about good garlic. The cost is $28 for members and $32 for nonmembers and includes a buffet breakfast.

WITH nearly 70 entries from across Australia, New Zealand, USA and Papua New Guinea, three playwrights have been chosen to premiere their work at the 39th One-Act Play Festival at Noosa Arts Theatre in July. The One-Act Play Festival is an important event on the Noosa Longweekend Festival Calendar, and offers an $8000 cash prize pool, including the Nimmo Prize of $5000 being awarded to the Best Play. Judging for the Best Play commences more than six months prior to the One-Act Play Festival and involves a judging panel of three industry professionals, supported by an independent reading panel. The forthcoming theatrical offering of Noosa Arts Theatres will feature the three finalists presenting their work in a series of performances in July.

Allan Mackay lives in Gerringong, NSW, and is author of over 35 plays published in six collections, with his plays performed worldwide. Allan will be presenting his latest work A Poet Passes, an intriguing play weaving through the delicacies of a mother and daughter attending the funeral of their husband and father, a famous poet who deserted them 17 years earlier. Author of Dead Loss, a hilarious comedy involving an ageing ex rock star who has fallen foul of both the authorities and criminal gangs, Richard Harris is a former engineer based in Malawi who turned his hand passionately to amateur theatre. Currently living in Bougainville Island, Papua New Guinea, Richard has acted, directed and written for amateur theatre in Africa, the UK and New Zealand. Harry’s Bounty is an in-

triguing play concerning an old factory that has not been in operation for over a quarter of a century. Two young people arrive at the abandoned factory with news which will change all of their lives forever. Playwright Polly Low was born and raised on Kangaroo Island, an upbringing which had a strong influence on her written work. Harry’s Bounty is her third play (preceded by The Hidden and Territory) and marks her move into a stronger focus on her writing passion. By DAVID ARNOLD NOOSA PIRATES SATURDAY evening saw the Noosa Pirates travel down the highway for their all-important clash against Caboolture. With several late withdrawals due to illness, the Pirates faced an uphill task before the game had even started. Undeterred, the Pirates came out all guns blazing with Alex Care scoring in the 9th minute to give the Pirates an early four point advantage. Caboolture hit back and with increased pressure putting the Pirates behind by 20 points to 4 at half time, but a win was not out of the question. Unable to make changes necessary to tiring bodies, the Pirates stood tall and even though the final score read Caboolture 26 to Noosa 10 after Ben Hayes scored late in the second half, the effort shown by the players who took to the field was inspiring to the their dedicated bunch of supporters. The result could have very well been detrimental to the Pirates chances of playing finals. However, this group of players are built of stern stuff so you would be a fool to write them off at this stage. As most people know, a week is a long time in footy, so get be-

NOOSA JUNIOR PIRATES UNDER 8 YELLOW THE rain cleared and the home fields were good for a clash against the Nambour Crushers in an impressive mighty Under 8s game. Great mateship and sportsmanship to all. Player of the Match was awarded to Phoenix Angelakos. UNDER 9 YELLOW A classic cross town rivalry between the Pirates and the Nambour Crushers. A true team effort again this week from the boys with Jack having his first game for the club but slotting in like a seasoned campaigner. A really good performance by the team and a great game to watch. UNDER 10 BLUE AND YELLOW The UNder 10s played at home against Nambour in very wet conditions. Both Blue and Yellow teams put in excellent games with defence and attacking skills on show for the home crowd. Josh and Roy attempted a chip chase combination that nearly worked and would have been pretty spectacular. Player of the Match was awarded to Lachlan Neville. UNDER 11 BLUE Under 11 Blue played against Stanley Rivers at home on Saturday (18 June). After a tough month of footy the boys continued on from a draw last week with a very convincing win. UNDER 11 YELLOW This week the teams had a home game against Nambour and got the points with a 28 to four victory. It is great to watch Ashton Clifford, who is really starting to run the ball hard, crossing over for a double this week. Andre was once again in solid form at fullback, Jed Bullman called some set plays from halfback and Arlo was quick at the play the ball. Jackson Smith got involved and made some hard hits, and Levi Hooper tackled well. UNDER 12 GOLD Under 12 Noosa Gold played the undefeated Caboolture Snakes today and brought home a welldeserved win 16 to 14. The Noosa boys came out strong in the second half with their defence. It was a very intense game to watch; a real crowd pleaser and one of the best this year so far. Man of the match could not be picked or named today as these boys all did their part and put all they had into this game. UNDER 12 GIRLS Under 12 Girls’ had another gala game at home this weekend. The official comp for the Under 12s will start after the holidays, stay tuned for more info as it comes out.

Under 14 Noosa Pirate Junior girls player of the match Ashka. UNDER 14 GIRLS Noosa/Kawana travelled to Beerwah on Friday (17 June) to play against the Beachmere/Bribie/Beerwah team. Not having had a game in several weeks, unfortunately the girls were just no match this time around and had the mercy rule enforced midway into the second half as the score climbed to 56 to six. Ashka earnt the three points award for always trying hard and having a go. Two points were awarded to Jazmine and one point was awarded to Brittney.

UNDER 16 GIRLS With only eight players, two of those playing up from the Under 14s, it was always going to be a tough ask against Caboolture at Beerwah on Friday night. Caboolture kindly only played eight players and as the game wore on they even had a couple of their girls come over and play for us. Thanks for the thought and sportsmanship. An honorable mention to Brittney Crosby who, while very quick on her feet, was also seen carting the ball forward in the middle.

Italian-born Aldo, who made his name as an architect in the United States, was asked in 1979 to judge the worldwide competition for a design for Australia’s new Parliament House.

He declined the offer, saying that he wanted to enter and win the commission, which he did, the Mitchell Giurgola and Thorp design beating 329 other entries from 28 countries. Being a huge fan of the old Parliament House (still a magnificent building and museum today), I was somewhat underwhelmed by what I saw taking shape on Canberra’s highest hilltop in the 1980s, but Aldo’s vision, and the incredible creative team he built up around him, finally delivered the goods – not some pompous edifice but a brilliant construction that related in every way to its environment, and actually nestled into it. On the 25th anniversary of its opening in 2013, photographer Michael Amendolia and I spent a wonderful day with Aldo at Parliament House and in his book-lined apartment in Kingston, interviewing and photographing him for Australian Geographic. Michael and I agreed when we floated out of there that it had been a highlight of our professional careers. He was an old school Roman gentleman who combined great wisdom with great humility. I cherish the fact that I was fortunate enough to meet him.

WE’VE had such a good run of surf lately that I felt I could dodge the dawn patrol sessions towards the end of last week and indulge my inner couch potato by watching the concluding stages of the Fiji Pro on TV. It was a good call because I caught some of the most exciting world tour surfing of this or any other year. On Thursday Cloudbreak was as good as it gets, on Friday just a little too big but with some great sets coming through in between the giant washthroughs. Matt Wilkinson, who still retains the tour leader’s yellow jersey by a good margin now at the halfway point, is a big, strong lad but he was absolutely knackered after being caught inside over and over again in his back-to-back semi against Ace Buchan and final against Gabriel Medina. Even at half that size, getting caught inside at Cloudbreak is a mission fraught with peril as you fight the force of the ocean to keep yourself off that treacherous reef.

In every generation there are great surfers who just fail to clinch a world title – I’m thinking of Simon Anderson, Cheyne Horan, Gary Elkerton – but over his illustrious 18-year career, you’d have to think that Taj was dead unlucky not to adorn the mantelpiece. But his many fans around the world are happy enough just to watch him surf. And last week at Cloudbreak he put on a clinic. It was tough bananas that Taj drew John Florence in the third round, but at 38 he wasn’t leaving the tour without a fight, and in absolutely pristine and pumping conditions he really took it up to the young Hawaiian, trading deep barrels and high nines from hooter to hooter. In the end it was too much to ask, but what a way to bow out! Mick Fanning and the rest of his mates mobbed him in the water before he even made the boat to have a rest, and a swooning Taj later said it was the heat of his life. Well, there have been many highlights in a wonderful career, but this was one session between two giants of our sport that I won’t forget in a hurry.

At this level of competition, and at double-overhead plus, these guys were really putting it on the line. Having surprised everyone by despatching John John Florence in the quarters, Wilko had no answer to the superb barrel riding and flourish finishes of the young Brazilian, giving Medina his first win for quite a while and a boost up the rankings. Likewise, the evergreen Kelly Slater bolted back from ratings Siberia with some incredible performances until he met the Medina machine in the semi-finals. But for me the real highlight of the event we’d almost forgotten was happening (after eight straight lay days) was the extraordinary and emotional swansong of Taj Burrow. I first met Taj at a trade show in Munich when he was just starting out. A group of us had a rowdy dinner at a bierkeller and I decided that this talented young surfer (rookie of the year in 1998, world runner-up in ’99) was also a great bloke. Judging by the party atmosphere on Namotu Island last week, and the fact that half the competitors were sporting Taj Farewell mohawks, the West Australian is still the life of the party and has no shortage of friends.

Kase was on fine form from the outset, Jake kept the pressure on the opposition and multiple tries were had by Myles, Lachie and Rory. Under 8 Noosa Dolphins 55 def University 30 This week the Under 8 Dolphins had their most challenging game of the season as they took on the undefeated Sunshine Coast Uni team. The Dolphins put up a courageous effort with Levi “Lucky“ Cairns scoring six tries, Finlay getting three and Rohan running in two. Declan and Ed stepped up their defence with some strong tackling. The two girls on the team, Ocean and Hope, showed great courage and teamwork. No individual was singled out with the entire team named Players of the Match. Under 8 Noosa Fins 65 def St Andrews 20 With only six boys available this week the Fins had to adopt guerrilla tactics against the army of players available to St Andrews on the soggy Flinders paddock. George White had a cracker of a game, dominating once again in the rucks and running in a massive eight tries, Rory McIntyre excelled with crunching tackles all match and found time to run in three wonderful tries. Mr Crow and Harry Marlow scored a try a piece whilst Gus Anderson and Jaxon Peermamode gave their all throughout. A very solid determined performance from this great bunch of lads. Player of the Match was awarded to George White.

Captain Louie put in his usual 100 per cent making huge tackles and was there to score a try off the great work by the Saatchi and Mack. Louie kicked well and copped a boot in the face to proudly show off a neat bruised inner lip shaped showing a perfectly indent of a boot sprig mark. The result was built from great ball retention and solid

teamwork that allowed the backs to race in the tries. Andrew showed scorching pace to run in five tries and Sam Lambert notched up twelve conversions. Under 12 Noosa Reds 41 def Eumundi 7 The boys were on their game right from the kick off and scored a couple of early tries.Eumundi hit back and pounded the Noosa line but some great defence kept them out. Tries were scored by Max (4), Flynn (1) and Patrick (2), with Sabyr making six from seven conversions. Under 13 Malaney 17 def Noosa Dolphins 12 Great effort again with some very good attacking which sadly didn’t end in points. The boys are really playing like a team. They did well against a good Malaney team. Player of the Match was awarded to Tim Mitchell.

Noosa kids in touch for grand finals By ANITA ANDERSON NOOSA JUNIOR TOUCH EVEN atrocious weather couldn’t dampen the enthusiasm of our junior touch footy players at last Wednesday’s grand final event. While the conditions were miserable for spectators and officials (thanks for sticking it out) the players revelled in the rain. Our Under 10 finals started before the worst of the weather hit. Running Rebels continued their undefeated season in style against the Tornadoes. This was a great game by all players from both teams but the Rebels have just been unstoppable. Fireballs and Lava Boys entertained their supporters with Lava Boys taking the match. Ice Angels and GSLC Boys put on a terrific show and with the score card all locked up at full time the game headed into a drop off. The Player of the Season Awards in this age division were awarded to Alla Christensen and Brandon Dwyer.

Both matches were captivating with SBSS and Foxy Rebels coming away with top honours. All of our girl’s teams have had marvellous seasons. The Under 12 boys division saw the unusual situation of a threeway final system between GSLC,

Speed Demons and Knights, with the Knights taking out the grand final. Parker Dean and Curtis Dean were well deserved recipients of the Player of the Season Award in this age group. Close results were the order of the day in the Under 14/16 girls division with SBSHS just managing to hold out Saints. The match between Noo-

sa Chicks and Feisty Chicks ended in the second drop off of the day with Noosa Chicks prevailing in the tight tussle. The Under 14/16 boys division saw another couple of riveting games with NDSHS proving too strong for NCC and despite a late couple of touchdowns to the Hairy Man, GSLC stood firm to take the win. Player of the Season was awarded to Georgia Haack and Jack Herriman for their respective divisions. Noosa Touch is proud to encourage junior refs to make their way through our ranks so a big thank-you to them all. This season the Referee Encouragement Award went to Tamatoa Casimiro and Referee of the Season was awarded to Harrison Lea. Brett ‘Angel’ Duke did not disappoint as he and his Tiger team mates overcame a persistent Moreton Bay to run out 9 goal victors. On a soft and getting increasingly boggier surface the home side were able to put the visitors to the sword in the final twelve minutes of the opening half kicking 4 late goals and go into the main break with a comfortable 32 point lead. Angel Duke and young Lachy Cameron were working hard in the ruck giving first use of the ball to playmakers Hill, Isles, Davis and Fitzpatrick. Up forward it was big Tasmanian recruit Jarred Westell who was providing a more than solid target with clever goal sneak tiger coach Sammy Faure back in the action after missing last week’s game with an ankle injury. Bushy Copeland had played a terrific first half but was controversially red carded at half time for an incident no one at the ground seemed to recall. Back to the game and the

The team put in a great performance this week. We had four players back from seniors and two back from injuries which helped, but it was our mental toughness which was most pleasing; I expected to win but not by that much. The ground was extremely heavy from the week of rain but the team forged on. Wince was a clear standout in the middle while Zac Smith, up forward, was involved in almost every shot on goal. Dylan Murray set up attack after attack from his rebound out of defence. Jason Blamney and Sam Friend’s form was outstanding having played

It was a really solid team performance right across the board making best players hard to single out. This writer being an ex-forward must praise the efforts of big Westy (5 goals) and Coach Sammy Faure who again booted 4 goals in a masterful display of set shot goal kicking. Skipper Nick Hill in the centre was again a standout and seemed to rack up possessions at will. Youngster Jai Fitzpatrick set the tone early in the victory with his fabulous evasive work whilst Isles, Moloney and Davis were never far away from the coal face. Joel Lambourn controlled the last line of defence with poise and precision whilst 2010 premiership team mates Garry Wallace and Co-Captain Tommy McKittrick provided terrific vision and leadership to be among the Tigers best. Punching above their weight By RON LANE LAST weekend a squad of boxers from the Impact Boxing Academy, Cooroy, flew to Mackay as part of the Southern Queensland team to compete against the best that north Queensland could provide. To say that it was a walkover is being polite with the Southerners winning 27 of the 32 fights on the program. For the Impact members it was definitely a successful tournament. Boxing in only her second tournament, Ella Boot, aged 16, won both her Friday and Saturday bouts, her first being a points decision and her second winning with a sensational KO in round one. Ten-year-old novice Kayen ‘Kaos’ Mercieca won his first fight with a first round KO and his second with a points decision. Despite recovering from a recent illness Coen Allman fought bravely to go down in a split decision on the Friday night but after recovered fully on Saturday he won a unanimous points decision. His opponent on this occasion was a tough member of the Palm Island Boxing Club who had a record of 11 fights for 11 wins. For Coen, aged 13, and current holder of the 36kg Australian Championship, his refusal to pull out of the tournament showed a lot of courage and is to be commended. Coach Mark Evans was very happy with the overall results with Impact fighters winning six of their five fights. “The event hosted by the Northern Beaches Bowls Club was well attended,” said Evans. “We can’t say enough about the club. Apart from playing host they also made their club bus available to convey our team around town. The hospitality of the locals was incredible.” Next major tournament will be Queensland v South Australia at Acacia Ridge Brisbane from 8 to 10 July. Then later in the year on 5 November it will be Noosa’s turn to play host, when Impact Boxing Academy will stage the sixth annual Young Guns meet at the Noosa District State High School. This will be a big night with boxers coming from all over Australia. Most importantly it will give the opportunity to see local state, national and international champions in action.

Mayor Tony Wellington and his fellow councillors congratulated the team at the Thursday 16 June night meeting. Walsh in title lead sport SUNSHINE Coast resident and Aussie Racing Car driver Ben Walsh competed last weekend in Round Three of the Aussie Racing Car Championships at the V8 Super Car Triple Crown event at Hidden Valley in Darwin. Walsh entered the weekend in second place in the championship, and after a completely dominant display, has come out with the championship lead. The weekend started with Walsh topping the timesheets in practice, and then qualifying his Dr Ink Tattoo Removal Chev Camaro on pole position, smashing the existing lap record by over half of a second. The Aussie Racing Car category is renowned for its close racing, and motor racing experts were stunned on the weekend, in what has been described as the most decimating drive in the 15-year history of the category. He took out the first two heats, pulling a huge lead before both races were finished under the safety car due to accidents in the latter stages. In the third race, which was a full reverse grid, Walsh started dead last on 35th position. After 8 laps, he had worked his way up into 7th position and was on track to pull an amazing last-to-first victory when a spark plug lead failed, causing him to run the last few laps with a misfiring car, dropping him back into 17th position. This caused damage to his weekend points haul, yet he still had enough points to start on the front row, in second position, for the final race. For the first three laps, he went wheel-towheel as the lead swapped many times. On the fourth lap, Walsh got himself into the lead and

TIGERS senior player Brett “Angel” Duke played his 250th game for the club on Saturday 18 June in front of a proud home crowd. Angel has played with the Tigers for over 18 years, when even after moving to Brisbane five years ago, the dedicated player continued to drive to training and games. Pre-game, the veteran player said he wasn’t nervous, just “taking it as it is”, and it showed with the Tigers clinching a win over Moreton Bay. “It’s all happening quickly,” he said. “But I’m not nervous.” Fellow Tigers players, supporters and Angel’s family all helped welcome Angel onto the field for the 250th time

with a big, bright banner to run through. It was a fitting start to a great game and what was a double celebration for Angel with his and twin Troy “Evil” Duke’s birthday coinciding with his 250th game for the club. Tiger columnist Julian Pitts, who played alongside Angel, has described him as competitive and a top bloke. “(I) had the pleasure of playing alongside Angel up forward for several years and even then his competitiveness to outscore even his own teammate was mind-boggling,” he said. Bag of medals for Dolphins COOROY Dolphins took 26 swimmers to Nanango Swimming Carnival on the weekend and came home with some amazing results. The weather was frosty and overcast and the kids turned a little blue but that didn’t stop them from swimming fast. There was fantastic team spirit from the Dolphins as they were cheering each other on throughout the day. Cooroy Dolphins had both the youngest swimmer at the carnival – Laila Jowett (3) and the oldest with coach Andrew Cowan showing the kids how it is done. His efforts saw him break three pool records during the course of the carnival. The Dolphins came away with over 100 PBs (personal bests), 39 medals, three pool records and two age champions. “It was exciting to see so many Cooroy Dolphins taking part in this carnival. So we are supporting kids who are looking to have fun, hang out with their friends and develop their swimming skills with the main aim of participation. “Then we have the other end of the spectrum were we have swimmers aiming to qualify for states and nationals and are working hard to achieve some fast times. “It’s great to be able to cater for them all and Nanango shows that we can do it, the kids are having great time and swimming fast. So as a coach you ask for any more than that.” Sophie Jansen, 8-year-old Girls Age Champion said: “I had a really fun weekend and I got to see friends I haven’t seen in a while. I am also really excited about getting age champion. I can’t wait for the next carnival.”
