Kindest of kids IF you thought teenagers were selfish and narcissistic, this might change your mind. Year 9 students at Beaconhills College are bringing a ray of joy to strangers around Melbourne’s CBD by performing ‘random acts of kindness’. The program involves students handing out simple gifts, flowers or even poems to a stranger to spread some joy and positivity. It also encourages students to think of others. Anne Field was approached by students Alex, Josh, Tyrell, Tyler and Chase in the Bourke Street mall recently and handed a chocolate and poem. She was so thrilled that she wrote to thank the school. “I am a grandmother who rarely goes into the city, but was there on Friday simply listening to the street music and ‘watching the world go by’ when I was approached by your boys,” she said. “They were extremely courteous and asked if I would be willing to accept a random act of kindness from them.” They handed her a chocolate and a short poem. “They were responsible for ‘making my day’,” she said, adding that everyone “could do with a little more kindness”. Beaconhills’ head of Year 9 at the Pakenham Campus, Graham Broderick, said the scheme started five years ago when a student, on one of the school’s regular ‘City Experience’ excursions, bought a bunch of flowers at the Vic Market and gave them to a man on a park bench, who was delighted. “People are sometimes scared of teenagers and don’t know how to respond to them,” Mr Broderick said. “But we know they have big hearts and we want to encourage them to think about others.” He said other kindness gifts had included blankets or dog food. Fitness centres boom By ALANA MITCHELSON MORE than a million visitors are expected through the doors of Cardinia’s major recreation centres as new facilities begin to open under new management. Aligned Leisure, a 100 per cent owned subsidiary of Richmond Football Club, will take over YMCA’s management of eight of the shire’s recreation facilities from 1 July. It said staff were allowed to stay in their roles. While casual entry fees will increase slightly, the cost of casual use of the gym at Cardinia Life will be reduced and minimum term contracts removed. Aligned Leisure will take over the management of eight of the shire’s recreation facilities including Cardinia Life Aquatic and Recreation Centre, Pakenham Regional Tennis Centre, four seasonal aquatic facilities and the soon-to-open Officer Community Hub and IYU Recreation Reserve soccer pitch.
Approaching the end of its current contract with YMCA, the council recently undertook a tender process for the management of its major recreation facilities. The council awarded the contract to Aligned Leisure in March, notifying members in April of the change. A Cardinia council spokesperson said that the council awarded the tender on merit and did not consider Richmond Football Club’s affiliation to the AFL in the new management decision. Aligned Leisure’s has committed to upgrading the health club equipment and delivering an award-winning fitness, nutrition, diversity and resilience program. These community initiatives would include two school programs covering health, wellbeing and anti-bullying, indigenous programs aimed at employment and young people, a youth leadership program and support for local charities. Mayor Jodie Owen said the agreement with Aligned Leisure would deliver almost $2 million in additional community
value. “We think that it’s a great outcome for our community,” she said. The YMCA, which has managed Cardinia Life since it opened in 2006, was given 16 weeks’ notice. YMCA Victoria manager Chris Hargreaves said his organisation had worked with the council in Pakenham since 1999, starting with the management of the Pakenham Indoor Sports Centre. “We are proud to have been given the opportunity not only to be a part of people’s lives in Cardinia but to assist them in improving their health and teach them life skills such as learning to swim,” Mr Hargreaves said. “We are also proud to have provided access to hundreds of Cardinia residents suffering disadvantage to improve their quality of life as a result of the significant fundraising our staff and volunteers do every day. “It is a time of change which has cre-
ated uncertainty with some staff, while others are embracing the change. “Some current staff members are staying on with new management while others have decided to stay with the YMCA at other facilities.” An Aligned Leisure spokesperson said that all staff were provided the opportunity to be re-employed by Aligned Leisure in their current role with the exception of the centre manager and that 95 per cent of staff will continue under new management. Aligned Leisure would be headed by Richmond’s general manager of consumer business Cain Liddle and consumer strategy manager Shane Dunne, both of whom have almost 15 years’ experience in the management of community recreation facilities. Cardinia council’s sustainable communities manager Jim Davine said all profits from fundraising would be maintained within the local community and support local programs and services.
A CAR has been stolen from a home on Flemington Rise, Officer, less than a week after two cars were stolen from outside properties in the same street over two consecutive nights. The previously stolen vehicles were tracked down to a Dandenong address, whereas the most recently pinched car was found crashed by police in Narre Warren. Witnesses reported seeing two men and a woman running from the crashed ’94 Mercedes, about 1.15am on Thursday 2 June. Police said the victim was asleep inside the Flemington Rise home when offenders took the car. They awoke to the sound of the garage door opening, about 3.30am on Wednesday 1 June, and watched as the luxury vehicle was driven away by offender/s in the company of another vehicle. Police believe the keys were taken from inside the home, with the victim reporting a number of other items stolen including a PlayStation, iPad, wallet and cash. The car was later found crashed in Narre Warren, where three people were reportedly seen running from the vehicle. Days earlier, two cars were stolen from outside one targeted property in the same street on consecutive nights. Between 9.30pm on Thursday 28 May and 7.30am on Friday 29 May, a blue Ford Territory station wagon was stolen from out the front of a Flemington Rise home. A white Holden Captiva was pinched there between 9.30pm on Friday 29 May and 5am on Saturday 30 May. Both cars were recovered in Dandenong. Police did not indicate whether the thefts were linked. Anyone with information about the incidents is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Seeing the Wood for the trees By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS THERE’S some big brush strokes to La Trobe incumbent Liberal candidate Jason Wood’s big-picture vision for his electorate. On the one side, there’s arts, tourism, roads, small business and tech parks as part of his local cultural and economic plan. The former counter-terrorism cop also has natural interests in law-andorder and national security. In sum, he wants to ensure La Trobe is a fantastic place to live - and a safe place. Mr Wood can’t afford to sit on his haunches. He won back the seat with a four per cent margin in 2013 after losing it in 2010; it is one of the Liberal Coalition’s most marginal seats in Victoria. The breakdown of the electorate is complex. It must be some task appealing to residents in the rampant Casey growth corridor as well as in the Green-tinged Dandenong Ranges. Being a marginal-seat MP is exciting. It gives him licence to “fight like hell to get what I want in the area”. Feedback “on the ground” is positive for his vision, Mr Wood says. “When I go out and talk to people, they love the tourism package, they love the plan for Bunjil Place, they love the plan for the Monash. “They realise it hasn’t been matched by Labor. Labor’s left them high and dry.” Feedback was a little tougher after the first Abbott-Hockey budget in 2014, Mr Wood concedes. He paints it as a small business trying to pay off a debt over two years instead of 10. “We tried to hit every possible group and every person we could. “The people we were hurting were concerned about that.” This election, Mr Wood is selling

Mr Wood talks up the prospect of an innovative IT business park on the O’Shea Road extension, which would create a new feeder road to a widened Monash Freeway. He wants to fill the breach created by Monash University’s exit plan from Clyde Road. The new provider must be focused on innovation, he says. “This is the space we want to work in this city,” Mr Wood says. The Coalition has also announced a $20 million tourism package, including $10 million for the Bunjil Place civic-arts precinct, running a red rattler from the CBD to Puffing Billy and creating a discovery centre at Emerald Park Lake.
Mr Wood hopes to launch a possible trail of walks highlighting the local arts history. Acclaimed creatives such as Arthur Boyd, C.J. Dennis and Arthur Streeton have lived and stayed in his electorate. He’s working on an upgrade for Wilson Botanic Park, including a cafe and education centre. After losing the seat to Labor’s Laura Smyth in 2010, Mr Wood went back to policing at the St Kilda Road-based state CIU. It kept him up to speed with modern crime-fighting such as the rising influence of outlaw bikie gangs and the drug ice, he says. After Numan Haider allegedly stabbed police and was shot outside Endeavour Hills police station, parents with radicalised sons contacted Mr
Wood for help. A former counter-terrorism cop, he made a speech in parliament last year calling for an expansion of the MYHACK program. The ensuing hack-a-thon staged in La Trobe last year challenged young people to be “agents of change”, to come up with ideas to tackle homegrown radicalisation. It was led by counter-terrorism expert and now-ALP candidate Anne Aly, but roundly criticised as scaremongering by La Trobe ALP candidate Simon Curtis. “He was completely wrong. He didn’t understand the issue,” Mr Wood says. “I don’t normally attack the can-
didate but I was trying to do the right thing and work along a bi-partisan approach.” Mr Wood wants community protection intervention orders to halt the reach of “extremist preachers” turning young impressionable minds to terrorism. The orders would include bans from social media, and from associating with “certain people”. It was something the State Government had “failed to address” - the gap in its incitement laws, Mr Wood said. “An extremist preacher never tells them to do something but gives them messages like Osama Bin Laden was a great man ... infidels are your enemy. “It’s everything but telling them to do something, so it doesn’t fall under the incitement laws.”

Judy cleans up at awards BY JARROD McALEESE THE Casey Environment Volunteer of the Year award was presented to Friends of Cardinia Creek founder Judy Smith at a civic reception held by the City of Casey on 3 June to coincide with World Environment Day. Mrs Smith was commended for her work in preserving and developing Cardinia Creek Bushland Reserves, particularly the Beaconsfield Flora and Fauna reserve, on a night that celebrated the conservation work of individuals and groups within the community.
The Friends of Cardinia Creek group was formed in 1998, with Mrs Smith and six other founding members still involved in volunteering today. Working alongside her husband Ralph and other volunteers, the group holds monthly working bees in which they conduct maintenance including the removal of weeds and replanting of thousands of indigenous plants funded through grants. The group also organises Clean Up Australia Day events throughout Berwick and Beaconsfield, while Mrs Smith herself picks up rubbish twice a
week in the area. Mrs Smith attributed her continued service to two of her long-standing passions. “I love the environment, I really do and I love volunteering as well, I have been doing it for over 40 years,” Mrs Smith said. She praised the ongoing contributions of her fellow Friends of Cardinia Creek members and said the group had been a blessing to her. “I have made lovely friends along the way, who are great volunteers and they help me greatly,” Mrs Smith said.
LEUKAEMIA deprived nineyear-old Seth Sleep from riding a push bike for four years - and now thieves have as well. Having beaten the blood cancer late last year, Seth had been behind the handles of his Giant BMX just 12 times before it was stolen from his family’s Narre Warren South garage. The bike was gifted to Seth by his poppy last year to help strengthen Seth’s legs after 70 rounds of chemotherapy. Now Seth’s dad Simon is “pissed off”. “Seth hasn’t been able to ride a bike since he was diagnosed in May 2012 and I’m pissed off because of the sentimental side of it,” Simon said. The BMX cost almost $500 and was noticed missing on Friday 27 May. The Sleep family have lived in their Narre Warren South home for more than 11 years and have never been burgled before. “There is stuff in front of the bikes in the garage so you can’t see them from the court,” Simon said. “It’s quite possible they have watched Seth put his bike away because they didn’t steal anything else that was in the garage or anyone else’s bike.” On Seth’s request Simon has

COUNCIL website, Tuesday 31 May 2016. Council’s application for a rate cap variation of 0.97 per cent states that it will only cost ratepayers $14 per household, just a few cups of coffee. In the News story Rates Cap’s Tight Fit, the council has got their sums wrong admitting that if the rate cap was approved, homeowners would have to pay an average of $52 per household. What has happened to the $14 cost per household? The council has not done its maths right and needs some tuition. All ratepayers are being taken for granted. Stand up and challenge the councils. In the website Governing Australia “3 levels of law making” this proves that councils are cheating, lying to us ratepayers in order to pay for unwanted infrastructure which must be the responsibility of federal/ state/ territory governments, not councils. Why do we need councils in the first place. It is just a waste of billions of dollars of money siphoned off ratepayers. Example, Australia has 565 councils. CEOs are paid lucrative salaries plus perks which are more than premiers of states. These billions can be put to use to boost the sagging Australian economy. Since councils are just creations of state and territory governments they can be easily abolished and instead create regional offices to cater to the essential needs of the local community. Councils thrive by cheating, lying to the ratepayers by bogus surveys just to get what they want. All councils must remember that they work for us, we keep them employed by paying their fat salaries. We do not work for them.

FINNING First National Real Estate in Cranbourne snagged seven national awards at an in-house ceremony in Cairns. The local agent is among First National Real Estate’s top national performers and was recognised on Thursday 19 May in front of former Australian Prime Minister John Howard. The awards dinner was part of First National Real Estate’s joint Australian and New Zealand Convention. Finning First National Real Estate principal John Tucker said market forces meant hard times for many agencies across Australia. “Real estate prices and population growth slowed in the past 12 months, which combined with tightened bank lending criteria to create significant changes to market dynamics in most First National Real Estate locations,” Mr Tucker said. On the night, two of the Finning team received a total of seven national awards, making them the best salespeople in such categories in Australia. Veteran salesperson Frank Barrett, who has been a part of the Finning team for more than 26 years, was named in the National Top Ten for Australian Salesperson of the Year. He took home a total of four awards in the Residential and Combined categories for the highest number of exclusive listings and the
highest number of settled sales in 2015. Rural and lifestyle salesperson Jason Brown was recognised for his achievements in the lifestyle small acreage category and won trophies for the highest number of exclusive listings and the highest gross sales commission in Australia. The keynote speaker at the convention was John Howard. OLD footy jumpers will be replaced at Hampton Park Football Club thanks to a State Government grant. The club’s secretary Peter Craig said grants such as this one of $2700 made a big difference to local sports clubs. “We’re thrilled that this grant will enable us to replace our players’ old footy jumpers that were just about past their use-by date,” he said. The club has received the grant as part of the latest round of VicHealth’s Active Club Grants program and can use the funding to purchase new sports items and equipment. CONSTRUCTION work for the $18 million redevelopment of the Casey Indoor Leisure Centre is well underway with the upgraded
facilities scheduled to be ready for residents early next year. The project of expanding and revamping the Casey regional basketball and netball facility at CILC began in January with Casey Mayor Sam Aziz saying the developments would improve multiple aspects of the centre. “Big changes can be seen at the Terry Vickerman building with the entire show court site demolished and the site now a hive of construction and earth work activity. “This redevelopment will deliver five new courts, including a premiere show court, spectator seating for 1500 people, a multipurpose function room, new foyer and entrance, upgraded and additional car parking, cafe and piazza and new change rooms and toilets at this popular facility.” Cr Aziz said the investment in the centre would continue to promote the growth of sport in the local area. “The redevelopment is expected to more than double the visitations to the site each year, improve the capacity of our netball and basketball clubs and attract the highest level of competition to Casey. “The project is highly anticipated among our sports community so the council is pleased to report that the project is tracking well,” Cr Aziz said.

Counting the cost of Apex By GEORGIA WESTGARTH THE Adendorff family of three are victims of Melbourne’s outlaw youth gang surge and they have been left with a trashed car, big bill and disrupted future - things they fled South Africa hoping to avoid. Johan Adendorff was stabbed in the neck while driving in South Africa. The father of two girls from Endeavour Hills was then stopped at a stop sign in a small country town with his window down when the attempted hijacking occurred. “I was stabbed with a screwdriver in 2004,” Johan said. “The guy tried to hijack my car ... that and to give my daughter’s a better future was why we left South Africa.” Crime was what pushed the Adendorff family out of their home town and crime is what now plagues their life in Casey. The Adendorff family have lived in Endeavour Hills for 11 years without any trouble. But in the early hours of Thursday 2 June, Johan’s daughter, 23-year-old Nicole, had her car smashed and vandalised, with ‘Apex’ carved on the bonnet - for what appears to be no reason at all. “My driver’s side window and mirror was smashed but nothing was stolen,” Nicole said. Nicole’s 2007 Volkswagen Polo was parked on West Vista Place in Narre Warren North when bandits went wild on a 12-car vandalism spree. Nicole’s GPS was not stolen from inside the car despite the vandals having full access to it. “By the damage they must have used a hammer or some sort of instrument not a foot or body part,” Johan said.
Out of the 12 cars defaced in the early hours of Thursday 2 June, two including Nicole's car were carved with "Apex".
Nicole and Johan will keep the VW locked away in their garage until they have decided how they will go about getting the car repaired. On his way to assess the damage to his daughter’s car Johan came across two other victims. “I was driving down James Cook Drive in Endeavour Hills and noticed a red Toyota with ‘Apex’ also carved into the bonnet so I pulled over,” Johan said. “A guy in a Mitsubishi also stopped and told me someone flung a wheelie bin at his car that same night and damaged his radiator and grill.” Johan said the owner of the red Toyota reported seeing four people trashing her car.
“She said she saw one jumping on her car - the Toyota was stomped on.” Nicole, now unable to drive her car to work until it gets fixed, is trying to figure out the best way to move forward - the car sitting in their garage. Nicole has contacted the State Government’s Victims of Crime to see what can be done, but is reluctant to pay $1000 in excess if she is to make an insurance claim. On the day of the spree, Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Ivan Bobetic told a media briefing that cars across the Hallam, Narre Warren and Narre
Warren North areas were affected. “It’s unknown if members of the notorious car-stealing gang (Apex) were actually involved,” Det Bobetic said. “It’s certainly an inquiry that we’ll be making however it would appear that this sort of offending isn’t of the same magnitude or modus operandi, if you like, that we are uncovering in his particular area,” he said. While the investigation is ongoing Johan is still looking for answers. “There’s no respect for other peo-
ple’s property it’s all extra money on top for us for someone to have fun ... or whatever they want to call it,” he said. The spree comes after more than nine months of home invasions targeting Casey residents - but is nothing new to Johan. “The crime in South Africa was really bad, the home invasions that are occurring now in Melbourne have been happening over there for many years if someone is home they have access to everything,” he said.

Towers row By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS CASEY Council will lobby NBN Co and politicians to scrap plans to install up to two 50-metre high mobile towers in the municipality’s foothills. At a 7 June council meeting, the council decided to write letters against the “proposed building” of two NBN lattice towers for Harkaway and Narre Warren North. Councillor Rafal Kaplon said it was a “pro-active” move from the council prior to NBN Co formally lodging a planning application. The aim was to highlight the green-wedge foothills’ protected status under the Casey planning scheme, and to urge NBN Co to explore alternatives such as underground cables and satellite technology. Cr Kaplon said NBN Co had chosen the mobile-tower option because it was the “most time and cost-effective way” despite residents’ concerns. NBN Co has proposed a 50-metre tower at 380-386
Harkaway Road which will provide wireless broadband for 240 properties in Narre Warren East and northern Harkaway. The company has not confirmed a second tower for the region. NBN’s state spokesman Michael Moore said a tower had been chosen for Harkaway Road because fixed-wireless technology was the “most suitable” for the area. “While this is our preferred site for the tower, we have not yet submitted a council planning permit application. “We are currently consulting the local community and are keen for feedback on the proposal and recommendations on any alternative sites.” Mr Moore said NBN had not decided on whether to build a second “fixed wireless” tower for Harkaway Village. Cables and satellite were the other options, he said. “It’s still in the design phase.” Save the Casey Foothills Association spokeswoman Rosalie Counsell said the

Harkaway Road tower’s prominent position would “desecrate” the scenic foothills for the sake of a “small number of households”. “While we don’t oppose the NBN, where it traverses high landscape value areas like the Casey Foothills, it should either go underground as was originally intended. “If this is not feasible, then it should be located on sites of low visual sensitivity, preferably where they can be ‘piggy-backed’ onto an existing facility.” La Trobe Liberal incumbent MP Jason Wood said he was seeking alternatives to ensure a “win-win” for residents. “While I understand their concerns, it’s very important to create stable mobile telecommunications lines for bushfire season communication and emergency warnings, so we have to find a way to balance these competing needs.” The Casey letter will be sent to the Federal and Victorian governments, as well as NBN chief executive Bill Morrow.

Camera lens on cruelty By GEORGIA WESTGARTH IT WAS the animal cruelty story that sent shockwaves through Melbourne - and the man first on the scene hopes CCTV, paid for by community donations, will stop it from ever happening again. Battersby Way in Lysterfield South was splattered with the blood of two kangaroos and a joey in March this year. Robert Bishop found the tortured bodies and decapitated joey near his driveway, after he disturbed the perpetrators. He calls them “a group of yobbos”. A night after the incident made headlines, Mr Bishop recalls a second visit. “There hasn’t been another butchering like that one, but they came back and our rubbish bins ended up all over the road,” he said. “Just ours, not our neighbours’ bins and it wasn’t windy.” In the early hours of Wednesday 23 March near the Churchill National Park, Mr Bishop heard hoons and saw six to eight men gathered around a twitching kangaroo. “They were standing in the headlights of a very large white 4WD ... the unfortunate kangaroo was upside down, its legs splayed wide and one of the men was hacking away at it with a very large knife. “The other males were talking excitedly and watching the spectacle, while another group was on the grass and I could hear a hammering sound coming from them.” The grisly discovery prompted Mr Bishop into crowd funding for a set of CCTV cameras to catch the deviants in the act. So far he has raised $1300.

Mr Bishop said this was where one roo had its leg "hacked off and embryo removed." “I am thrilled with that amount - I was absolutely astounded,” he said, even though it is not enough money to finish the project alone. Due to the expensive nature of the project Mr Bishop has enlisted the help of a security company, and says the cameras will be up and working by the end of the year. “Once we get a price for the two cameras - one will point up the road towards where the kangaroos are
and one to catch them on their way out - my wife and I will make up the difference,” Mr Bishop said, keen to get the offenders' registration plates to police. “Two cameras will have it covered. “Then we can prosecute those responsible for hassling the roos, which is not uncommon - the butchery is uncommon.” After finding the gruesome scene

A NARRE Warren home has burst in flames after initial reports of a large explosion and fire in a garage, about 8.11pm on 1 June. Neighbour Paul Stevenson, who lives about 500 metres from the home on the corner of Seebeck and Sneddon drives, ran to the scene after hearing a “boom” from inside his house. He and his daughter Cheyenne took photos of flames emerging through the home’s roof, and observed a blackened gas bottle in the garage. “The fire certainly wasn’t contained just to the garage.” A CFA spokesman said six fire trucks attended the blaze, responding to a report that a car was on fire in the home’s garage. The firies brought the blaze under control by 8.29pm. The spokesman had no details on the extent of damage.

Hinch’s eye is on justice By GEORGIA WESTGARTH IN HIS bid for election to the Senate ‘The Human Headline’ gets, “You’re a ledge Dezza” shouted his way through shopping centres as he travels Victoria. Stopping through the outer southeast last week, Derryn Hinch visited Pakenham, Tooradin and Cranbourne spruiking his reforms for justice via his Justice Party. The former 3AW broadcaster had Cranbourne Park shoppers star-struck on Friday 3 June. Philip Wiseman detoured Derryn’s way and told him “If you did what you said you were going to do last year and start that party, you’d have my vote.” “We need someone to keep the bastards honest again,” Philip said. Derryn responded: “Well that’s exactly what I’ve done ... I’m combining both Gough Whitlam’s motto and Don Chipp’s, it’s time to keep the bastards honest.” Shaping his campaign around his long-term stand for tougher court sentencing and a public register of convicted sex offenders, Derryn’s Justice Party goes by the motto ‘It’s just common sense’. Common sense he says that needs to be concentrated on reforms to bail and parole, animal rights, voluntary euthanasia and domestic violence reform. “When a man breaks his wife’s jaw that should be treated no differently to when a man king-hits a stranger - but that’s not the case right now, a wedding ring is called a mitigating circumstance and that’s just bullshit. “That’s the sort of thing that has to change and it’s the same thing with child pornography,” he said. “It always ties back to the fact too many judges and magistrates are thinking too much about the rehabilitation and the effect on the criminal than on the victim.” Derryn will continue his trip around Australia up until the 2 July election - having already travelled more than 7000 kilometres in his campaign bus.

Cuppas lead cancer fight AS MELANOMA is on Melbourne’s mind with the recent diagnosis of Hawthorn footballer Jarryd Roughead, it seemed fitting that melanoma would spark conversation at a Biggest Morning Tea event in Cranbourne. The event held at the Cranbourne Football Club raised more than $5000 for the Cancer Council and even managed to help Cranbourne’s homeless at the same time. Biggest Morning Tea organiser Roxanne Taranto, who took over the event when her
own mum, Dianne Schreuder, died from kidney cancer, said the afternoon teas were always a success. “It’s our 11th year, we had 80 people attend and over those years we have donated $60,311,” Ms Taranto said. “Now one in two people are touched by cancer. When we started it was one in five. “Cancer recovery is much better now than when we started running the morning teas which means the money is helping.” The Cancer Council is aim-
ing for 36,000 host registrations and so far has 27,023 hosts. Ms Taranto said a speech by Ron Neyenhuis about his melanoma battle struck a chord. “He is going through it now for the second time,” she said. “He spoke about how he works indoors and always wears shirts but got a melanoma on his back - you just never know.” An auction and fruit and veggie stall helped raise funds at the tea on Thursday 26 May and leftovers were sent to the Cranbourne food truck.

Report highlights path By CASEY NEILL EDUCATORS and businesses each think the other is responsible for forging employment pathways for students. “That suggests there’ll be some young people falling through those cracks and not getting those employability skills,” Jennifer Ebdon said. She and fellow school and community development officer Mary Tresize-Brown launched a report on the issue at the South East Local Learning and Employment Network (SELLEN) AGM at its new Langhorne Street headquarters in Dandenong on Thursday 2 June. SELLEN was established in 2001 to bring together educators, employers, industry, welfare agencies, local government and non-government organisations. The focus is giving 10 to 19-year-olds a better go at successfully moving through the education system to employment. CEO Andrew Simmons said funding had been a major challenge for SELLENs over the past few years. “A change of state government has brought with it the promise of four years of funding for LLEN (Learning and Employment Networks) core contracts,” he said. “The confirmation of funding for LLENs out to 2019 has provided some security to programs and staffing.” Mr Simmons said SELLEN was involved in developing many programs, initiatives and partnerships last year. These included the Young Parents Education Program at Cranbourne Secondary College, adding 173 new employers to its contact suite, and delivering a training awareness program to 150 at-risk young people.
Mr Simmons said SELLEN was also involved in more than 40 networks, steering groups and taskforces, “providing further support to like-minded organisations and initiatives in the region and across the state”. “These relationships allow us to have an influence on many issues that impact young people, particularly those living within the SELLEN region,” he said. Ms Tresize-Brown said consultation for the Business and Education Interaction in South-East Melbourne report across Greater Dandenong, Casey and Cardinia started about 12 months ago and included 20 businesses from several sectors and 20 educators. “We asked them very simple questions ... centred around how they interact with each other,” she said. She and Ms Ebdon wanted to find out what worked for each party, she said, with the goal of finding out how to create a winwin-win situation for employer, school and student. “We will take the report back to the 20 schools and 20 businesses,” she said. In July they plan to use the report to start a conversation about easily bringing schools and businesses together. Ms Ebdon said work experience was the most common way educators and businesses interacted. But some schools have done away with the program, she said, because it was too time-consuming and not valuable enough. Some employers also said they “preferred to have students who had been on that journey, decided what pathway they wanted to go down and could come to the workplace already focused”.

THEY don’t call it ‘The Big House’ for nothing. Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, the home of the University of Michigan Wolverines, has an official capacity of over 107,000 people. The MCG’s, by comparison, is around 100,000. Across all of US college sport, only three other schools - UCLA, Stanford and USC - have richer championship histories than the Wolverines, which also happen to have more than 1.5 million likes on their Facebook page. The Collingwood Football Club, by comparison, has around 330,000. Yet on Friday - on a cold, wet and otherwise miserable Melbourne night - the Wolverines called Officer’s Heatherbrae Reserve home. Through a remarkable series of interpersonal connections, Wolverines coaches - including Jay Harbaugh, the son of head coach Jim - visited Melbourne’s south-eastern suburbs as part of their first ever series of overseas satellite training camps. Those who drove down the Princes Highway through Officer at about 7pm on Friday probably would have wondered what all the commotion was about. More than 150 gridiron players - both male and female, and from a range of age groups and playing positions - were put through their paces by Wolverines' coaches aiming to both grow their brand internationally, and just perhaps find their next big thing. Gridiron Victoria and the Pakenham Silverbacks hosted the remarkable night, while the Officer Football Club’s Under 17s and Under 12s teams graciously gave up their main training oval for the night. “We didn’t really know what to expect,” said Silverbacks co-founder, player, and women’s team coach Richie Howlett, who was also put through his paces. “They hoped for between 50 and 100 participants and there was at least 150. “It was awesome to be involved with it. “They just brought such an enthusiasm and passion for the game to the night and they were genuinely excited about sharing their knowledge with us. “It’s been a massive positive all-round. We’ve made some real connections with people at the top of the sport. “They are where they are because they’re so passionate about the sport.”

Belton’s hot shooting drowns the ’Bool By RUSSELL BENNETT DESPITE losing to the firstplaced Western Port Steelers on the weekend, the Pakenham Warriors Big V Division 2 men’s basketballers remain in second on the ladder and with the belief that they could knock off the top side when it matters most. The Steelers came away with an 11-point win on Sunday afternoon, 76-65, but Pakenham made just two of its 14 attempts from the perimeter and just half of its free-throw attempts. The upside in the Warriors’ group and scope for improvement is obvious for all to see. Big man Kenneth Hall hit his straps yet again for Jeff
Reid’s side, with the import leading the way with 21 points and 11 rebounds on a superefficient 9-12 shooting performance from the field. Ben Gaze finished with 14 points, while Hayden Davey had an off shooting game in yet another sign of the upside to come in the group. The news isn’t as promising for Pakenham’s Division 2 women’s side, which was trounced 116-48 by the hometown Mornington. But the future of Pakenham basketball is a blindingly bright one, as the Youth League 2 men’s team continues to show. In the first of back-to-back games across the weekend, the Simo Pajdic’s Warriors defeated Warrnambool 79-74 on
Saturday night off the back of 29 points and 8 boards from swingman Lee Belton. Then, on Sunday afternoon back at Pakenham they made a huge fist of their clash with Casey before ultimately going down by 10, 67-57. Big man Lewis Newman was the star of the show with 24 points and 15 boards on 11-21 shooting. This week the Youth League side will face Western Port at Hillview Stadium in Rosebud from 1pm on Sunday; the Division 2 women will head to Cranbourne to take on Casey this Saturday night from 6pm; and Jeff Reid’s men’s side will host Oakleigh in the battle of the Warriors this Sunday from 2pm.

Narre continue to dominate all opposition By DAVID NAGEL BEACONSFIELD, Doveton and ROC gained significant momentum in Round 8 of SEFNL netball on Saturday while Narre Warren continued its absolute dominance over all opposition. Beacy once again had to work hard to overcome a quality opponent, this time toppling Hampton Park in a 49-38 victory at Holm Park Reserve. The Eagles continue to lift the bar when confronted with a challenge, from Doveton (41-31) in round four, to Tooradin (40-33) last week, to this win against the Redbacks, the Eagles are showing they are most consistent of Narre Warren’s potential premiership challengers. But Beacy stole the march early and continued to build their lead narrowly throughout a chilly and drizzling after-
noon. They scored 16 goals to 10 in the first quarter, the experience of Bianca Sanzaro (GS) and Andi Dickson (GA) shining through at the attacking end of the court, taking full advantage of the great work of Kaela Hughes (C), Mel Davies (WA) and youngster Zoe Mason (WD). Kim Coulson, Karli Foster, Monalisa Groom and Birgitta Nemaric battled hard for the full four-quarters for the Redbacks. Long, low and sleek piece By EWAN KENNEDY JAGUAR XF is an upmarket medium to large sedan/ saloon that has a sporting flair in all models that’s not always the norm in its market segment. While not an out-and-out performer in the manner of the SVR (nee RSport) range, the standard XF definitely sits to the sporting side in the eternal sports/ handling compromise. Drivers love it for that and we’ve just spent a most enjoyable week behind the wheel of an iconic British machine. The newly launched Jaguar XF has a strong visual resemblance to the model it has superseded, which makes a lot of sense as the latest Jaguar theme has gained a lot of praise. The distinctive new-generation Jaguar grille is almost upright and flanks large headlights with big foglight grilles beneath them. The Jaguar’s profile is long, low and sleek and finishes off with a fastback rear end. Our review car certainly drew plenty of comments on the road and when we parked. Inside you can opt for the traditional leather-and-timber look - still our favourite - or more modern metallicsports appearance. Quality of build is high and there’s no doubt you’re in a Jaguar due to the centre gear selector that rises from the

New Jaguar XF’s profile is long, low and sleek. console, and the air vents that are hidden when the ignition is off. Love it. Jaguar XF has two infotainment systems. The standard one is InControl Touch and uses an 8.0-inch touchscreen. It supports gestures as used on smartphones and tablet computers to let you swipe and drag your way around the system. There’s also voice recognition control which reduces the amount of potentially dangerous driver distractions. Jaguar's InControl Touch Pro, as fitted to our test car, had a 10.2-inch touchscreen. The home screen can be customised, wallpaper can be set to any image, and widgets can be added to pro-
vide shortcuts. It also supports the latest generation of Jaguar’s Dual View technology and has a 100 per cent increase in screen pixel count over the previous model. The quality of the audio output from the optional 17-speaker, 825Watt digital surround sound system developed by Meridian in conjunction with Jaguar is very impressive. There’s a solid range of engines on offer; four-cylinder 177 kilowatt turbopetrol and a 132 kW turbo-diesel engines, both with capacities of 2.0 litres. Then there’s a trio of 3.0-litre V6 engines, two supercharged petrol, the other a turbo-diesel.

Outputs are 250 kW or 280 kW in the petrol and 221 kW from the diesel. Our review XF was fitted with what we feel is the best of the lot, the supercharged 250 kW V6. All engines sit in front of an eightspeed automatic transmission. It works brilliantly with the engine’s computer, providing fast smooth changes and generally reading the driver’s mind as to the correct ratio. Passive and active safety features had already gained the Jaguar XF a five-star Euro NCAP rating before it arrived in Australia in February 2015. In April 2016 it was issued an ANCAP (Australasian) rating with the
maximum of five stars. Seat comfort is every bit as good as in all Jaguar saloons. It seems the Brits prefer it that way, and as our bones aren’t as young as they used to be we approve of this design standard. Front seat room is fine with good leg and reasonable foot room. The rear seat, while not exactly stretch-out spacious, is fine for two adults who aren’t a lot taller than average, the low sporting profile creates a minor drawback in this area. The 3.0-litre 250 kW supercharged petrol V6 was our favourite unit when we attended the national media launch of the Jaguar XF in Melbourne early this year. Having just spent a week with that engine in our home area in south-east Queensland our view certainly hasn’t changed. The silky smooth feel and fast throttle that make a supercharged engine quicker than a turbocharged one is very much to our liking. The seemingly endless torque made light work of hills and minimised time spent overtaking. Though it’s obviously a high-performance unit, the efficiency of the petrol 3.0 means it only used seven to eight litres of fuel per 100 kilometres on the open road and motorways. Hot for Mini Convertible By EWAN KENNEDY HOT on the heels of the announcement of the standard convertible versions of the third generation Mini comes information on the hottest of them all - the John Cooper Works (JCW). Powered by a highly tuned version of the Mini 2.0-litre turbo-petrol fourcylinder engine, the JCW unit produces 170kW of power between 5200 and 6000 revs, and 320Nm of torque that’s on tap all the way from 1250 to 4800rpm. Sitting beside the engine is a sixspeed sports automatic transmission that can be overridden by paddle shifters. A six-speed manual is available. As a sign of the times the manual is optional, at no extra charge. With the automatic transmission the Mini Convertible’s zero to 100km/h time is 6.5 seconds. On track or in the Northern Territory it can be pushed out to a top speed of 240km/h. Dynamic Damper Control and an electronic differential lock (EDL) help tame the Mini’s engine. Naturally, there’s sports-tuned JCW suspension. The driver can chose Comfort, or optimise the system in several ways for sporty driving. Taking away the roof of any monocoque car means it has to have under-

So the JCW convertible will be a little slower in acceleration but gain a fraction in handling. Only track time by a professional driver will work out the finest details. A fully-retractable soft-top technically makes this the first Mini convertible - the previous generations have
been cabriolets, that is some portion of the roof remains in place with the top open. Fully integrated rollover protection is a major part of the safety system. The convertible roof is operated by a toggle switch that takes it from closed to fully open in 18 seconds. Even better, the roof can be opened or closed at speeds of up to 30km/h.
But wait … there’s more. If you don’t want a fully open car, the Mini’s roof also has a sliding function making it a sort of sunroof. It opens to 400mm and can be operated at any speed. Mini calls this a four-seat convertible and the new model has 36mm more rear shoulder room than the outgoing cabriolet.
There’s 112mm more rear elbow room and 36mm added knee room. We’ve yet to drive a new Mini Convertible so can’t comment on whether we feel it’s a four-seater or really a two-plus-two. The latest open-top Mini has 45 litres more luggage capacity than the old. Infotainment is by way of a 12-speaker Harman/Kardon Hi-Fi; DAB radio; Mini Navigation System Professional, including 8.8-inch screen, 3D maps, touchpad controller, voice recognition and a 20 GB hard drive. Mini JCW Convertible has sports seats trimmed in carbon black ‘cloth/ dinamica' upholstery. There are JCW-specific door sills, gearlever, instrumentation and stainless steel sports pedals. It comes as no surprise that the tradition of personalisation is very much alive and well in the new JCW. One of our favourites is a Mini Yours soft-top with embroidered Union Jack-look finish. This can be complemented with a huge range of interior and exterior customising items. Priced from $54,900 plus on-road charges, the all-new Mini JCW Convertible will be available from dealers early in June.
