On the first Friday of each month funky families and groovers of all ages flock to a discrete laneway off Lanyana Way as live music and art installations bring the Junction Laneway to life. First Fridays is an initiative of the Noosa Creative Precinct Inc. which has have been working tirelessly to bring life into the once quiet commercial precinct. It is a move that councillor Jess Glasgow was happy to support. “This project seems to be very successful, we haven’t received any complaints and it appears to have a really positive impact on the local area,” Cr Glasgow said. “First Fridays are run in a family friendly space so everyone from children to adults can enjoy the events and I’ve really noticed the life and culture the initiative brings to the area.” Head along to the Junction Laneway on Friday 3 June from 6pm to catch popular band A French Butler Called Smith. Residents go in to bat By MEGAN OGLE MORE than 60 frustrated residents gathered at Wallace Park on Thursday 26 May to demand that Noosa Council cull the growing flying fox colony. Event organiser and long-time advocate for the removal of the Wallace Park flying fox colony Kay Fielden said residents were angry about Noosa Council’s lack of action.

“Noosa Council has permitted the bats to populate, propagate and copulate without caution or hindrance to the extent they are now in Wallace Park in plague proportions and rapidly spreading throughout Noosa, such as in Hasting Street, Pinaroo Park and Gympie Terrace, right in the middle of popular tourist attractions,” she said. Ms Fielden labelled the meeting an “outstanding success” with a ma-

jority of residents voting in favour of her suggestions that include urging Noosa Council to negotiate a cull of the protected species. “This has been done before on 7 September 2012 when the Queensland Government reintroduced shooting as a means of bat control after requests from farmers,” she said. Ms Fielden also called on residents to lay a complaint against the council with the Local Councils

Commission, a three-person board that former Noosa Mayor Noel Playford was recently appointed to. Ms Fielden said she would call for Mr Playford to stand down as he is part of the complaint that would be based on an alleged “failure to do anything” despite residents’ requests. The complaint would also include accusations of a lack of duty of care, negligence by permitting bat numbers to grow, sleep deprivation and

A spokesperson for Sir Richard’s Queensland getaway confirmed that Makepeace Island would serve as a base for the newly launched Richard Branson Koala Conservancy program. “The conservancy is a program committed to funding koala re-

search to contribute to the sustainability of koalas in Queensland, and the Noosa region in particular,” the spokesperson said. “The big opportunity lies in dovetailing the first regional Koala Conservation Management Plan, currently being finalised by Noosa Council and applying scientific rigor to fill in the blanks so that our future koala conservation efforts are scientifically sound and well directed.” The spokesperson said Makepeace Island would serve as a base for the program and would include

koala holding enclosures for short stays as well as free-range enclosure for pre-release holding with a focus on research. “The first project will be developed to understand the drivers of the decline of Noosa’s koala population,” the spokesperson said. “To prevent further decline and extinction of local koalas requires detailed knowledge of the causes of premature death and reproductive loss. “These can only be determined using telemetric monitoring and a detailed investigation of koala

population health.” Local koala advocacy group Queensland Koala Crusaders Inc (QKC) president Meghan Halverson said the group was delighted about the establishment of the conservancy program. “We hope that the involvement of Sir Richard Branson and Brett Godfrey, and their establishment of this collaborative research entity, will be a turning point for our much-loved national icon and all the unique flora and fauna that live in our forests with them,” Ms Halverson said.

23 CCTVs keep eyes on Cooroy CBD COOROY is set to become safer after LNP Candidate for Wide Bay Lew O’Brien announced plans to install CCTV cameras in the regional town. Mr O’Brien was joined by former Prime Minister Tony Abbott and former Deputy Prime Minister and Member for Wide Bay Warren Truss and representatives from the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce and Cooroy police for the announcement on Wednesday 1 June. Mr O’Brien said he welcomed Minister for Justice Michael Keenan’s announcement that $200,000 from Round Two of the Coalition’s Safer Streets Programme will fund closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras in Cooroy. “This commitment will deliver 23 CCTV cameras in Cooroy’s CBD, along Maple Street and the

industrial park and allow for access by police at the Cooroy police station,” Mr O’Brien said. “The Cooroy CCTV camera network will enable police to monitor and respond to any suspicious activity. “The presence of CCTV cameras also acts as a deterrent to those who are considering breaking the law. Potential offenders will think twice about possible criminal behaviour if their chances of being caught on camera are high.” Mr Truss said the presence of CCTV cameras helped people to feel safer and more secure in their neighbourhoods. “Whether people are going about their business, shopping, out to dinner with friends or enjoying a night out, CCTV cameras provide an additional layer of security to help protect businesses,

residents and their property,” Mr Truss said. The Safer Streets Programme supports communities at the grassroots to help address crime and anti-social behaviour, and boost crime prevention initiatives to keep our streets safe. “The Federal Coalition Government is delivering on its commitment to prevent crime and improve the safety of our local communities by putting money into affordable, achievable, sensible programmes like our plan for safer streets,” Mr Abbott said. “Only safe communities can be strong and prosperous, and one of the best ways to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour is to install CCTV. “The Coalition will continue to reinvest money confiscated from criminals and use it to fund

projects that make our streets and communities safer.” In the first funding round, the Safer Streets Programme provided $19.5 million for specific projects for the installation of CCTV and lighting. This is the second round of funding which will be delivered in two streams. The first stream will fund community safety infrastructure such as CCTV and lighting. CCTV is an effective crime prevention measure that provides significant deterrence to anti-social behaviour and is a valuable investigative tool. The second stream will deliver crime prevention initiatives by supporting the vital work of PCYC and Bluelight organisations. Ms Fielden said if the complaint is successful or there is a long delay in the process, the residents will begin a class action against the council that would seek individual damages due to the “bat invasion”. The residents also agreed to discuss dispersion techniques with the council and call for fir and gum trees to be planted throughout Wallace and Pinaroo Park as well as the installation of solar-powered sensor lights and sprinkler systems. Ingrid Jackson was the only councillor to attend the meeting but was unable to share her comments as the angry crowd often drowned her out. Ms Fielden said Cr Jackson tried to voice council views but “unfortunately, the majority of residents felt Noosa Council had already had four-and-a-half years to voice their views and act, but had chosen to do nothing, so Ingrid was not well received”. After the meeting Cr Jackson denied claims that Noosa Council had been inactive and that a management plan, based on expert advice from consultants, has been in place to “alleviate the problem”. “Under the plan, trees have been pruned and others removed to form a buffer zone. “In addition, a tree canopy sprinkler system is being installed to discourage flying foxes from roosting too close to residents’ homes,” she said. “The council also keeps in touch with research into this problem and activities in other areas to separate flying fox colonies from residential and agricultural areas. “Shooting the flying foxes, proposed by a few residents, is only permitted by law in threatened agricultural properties and is an option not available to us. “Culling is usually done using firearms and is only permitted in fields and orchards where flying foxes are feeding, never at their base camp roosts,” she said. “There is no doubt gunfire may encourage dispersal but the colonies are prone to later return or relocate to nearby sites. “Of course, residents can opt to approach State and Federal authorities about this matter.” Ms Fielden said there will be more meetings to see if “our resolutions are implemented and what further action is required”.

In concert for Hospice funds THE community turned out in support of the Sunshine Hospice last week with a concert held to raise much-needed funds for the charity. The charity concert held on Sunday 22 May at the Good Shepherd College Hall held over 160 guests who enjoyed performances by the internationally recognised Esk Choir, local poet Ian MacKay, soloist Toukie Wood and mandolin player Sue Flower. The concert raised over $4000 for the Sunshine Hospice with further fundraising efforts already underway including a raffle to win a painting by local artist Tricia Bradford. Ms Bradford donated the painting, said to be worth $800, to be raffled in a bid to raise funds for the hospice. The painting is currently on display at the Sunshine Hospice Op Shop located at The Atrium, 91 Poinciana Avenue, Tewantin. Tickets are $2 each or three for $5 and available at the op shop. The winner will be drawn in store on Friday 10 June.

THE local Vietnam Veterans Association’s social calendar has been full since the group received a grant this year to help boost social and outdoor activities. The Vietnam Veterans Association of Australia received a grant through the Federal Government’s Veteran and Community Grants program, which helped the group to buy two branded marquees, four folding tables and up to 40 chairs. Member Bruce Wilson said the social outings helped members to beat isolation and build friendships with others by attending fun social events. “We hold social events every four to six weeks, which is really good because the members don’t get out too much on their own,” Mr Wilson said. “We also find it’s more comfortable for people to mix in groups and with people who understand

Laughter is best medicine By MEGAN OGLE A LOCAL support group is calling on members to join in the laughter as they fight their way through cancer. The local Can Laugh Cancer Support Group is a friendly and informal group which supports people who have been affected by all types of cancer at any stage and at any age. Can Laugh member Joan Murray, who has been with the group for 10 years, said she felt less alone and more happy since joining the group. “When I went through my

treatments, I was able to talk to the group about all the options and they really helped me,” Ms Murray said. “Cancer isn’t like the flu, I’d never had it before, it was great to talk about it with other people.” The group meets on the first Friday of each month and invites guest speakers such as doctors, chemists and experts to speak to the group about the help available and answer any questions. The group is also focused on fun with fortnightly coffee meetings where the ‘C’ word

is forbidden and laughs are encouraged. There are also Christmas events in July and December. “There are so many people in the community who we could help and support,” Ms Murray said. “We laugh all the time and we’re here to help anyone who has or is experiencing cancer it’s a life-changing journey.” The group meets on the first Friday of each month at 10am at the CWA Hall, Tewantin. The Queensland Cancer Council Noosa Branch volunteers held The Biggest Morning Tea on Thursday 26 May and more than 120 Noosa residents turned out to support the worthwhile cause. Morning tea co-ordinator Annie Evans said more than $3000 was raised on the day through raffles and entry fees.

“I would like to thank the businesses who donated all the lovely prizes. There was a great range. Also to the Boathouse for donating their beautiful venue,” Ms Evans said. “The day would not have come together without all the volunteers who helped put it together with their baking, making sandwiches, serving tea and coffee, selling tickets and decorating the room for the day. Their support is invaluable.”

It follows a spate of complaints that too many local commercial buildings do not have street numbers clearly displayed. Acting Local Laws Co-ordinator Phil Montague said that business owners should check their shopfronts, offices or industrial and commercial premises for street numbers. “It is in every business owner’s interest to ensure customers can find their premises quickly and easily. “Displaying the street number is one of the simplest and cheapest things business owners can do to put their shops on the map,” he said. Mr Montague said besides being helpful for customers, visible street numbers could help save a life. “Street numbers help emergency services personnel quickly locate an address at a time when every minute spent driving around or knocking on the wrong door could be the difference between life and death,” he said. Under the council’s local laws, all properties, except vacant land, must be clearly numbered. “In the case of multi-tenancy properties or leased premises, business owners should contact the landlord or body corporate to ensure the property complies with the law,” Mr Montague said.

Picking up the best tips NOOSA District State High School year 10 humanities students have had a lesson in caring for the environment after visiting some of the region’s most iconic locations. The excursion was part of their geographic study of coastal management on the Sunshine Coast and was designed to allow the students to fine-tune their geographic skills and develop a greater understanding of the region in which they live. The students learnt about noxious weeds, which are regularly removed from the dunes at Peregian by volunteer groups, as well as the danger plastic poses to marine and human life. To help share the message, Surfrider Sunshine Coast branch secretary Chris Glennie spoke to the students about the importance of keeping beaches clean. Ms Glennie said spending time with the students was a “magical” experience. “It was actually a really special series of talks and I felt a bit of magic with these kids,” she said. The issue of beach erosion at Noosa Main Beach was discussed by a Noosa councillor who also provided the students with interesting information on the history of Noosa, describing the various locations of the mouth of the Noosa River throughout the years as well as the diverse ways in which the area has been utilised by people from the time indigenous tribes

The students are assessing viable options to manage beach erosion at Noosa Main Beach, including sand pumping, the construction of an artificial reef and the extension of existing groynes. The students found it fascinating seeing the innerworkings of the Noosa sand pumping station and enjoyed their birds-eye view of Noosa and its surrounds from the top of Mount Tinbeerwah.

AFTER experiencing the blowtorch of politics during the recent council election campaign, Mayor Tony Wellington is facing up to some more heat next week - this time from his friends and colleagues. On Sunday 19 June councillor Wellington will be ‘roasted’ by three of his colleagues at the Noosa Open Studios fun fundraising event - The Sunday Roast. Roasters Deputy Mayor Frank Wilkie, Noosa Long Weekend Festival President Johanne Wright and long-term friend Michael Egan will be regaling The Sunday Roast attendees when they comically reveal the foibles of Tony’s personal and professional life.

When asked how he felt about being ‘skewered’ over the coals, Cr Wellington said he felt “like a sacrificial lamb”. “I look forward to being served up as an offering to the God of Humility on Sunday,” he said. Make your vote count this federal election Saturday 2 July At this year’s federal election, the way you vote for the Senate has changed and it’s important that you understand how to vote correctly. On the large white Senate ballot paper, you can choose to vote either above or below the line. If you choose to vote above the line, you now need to number at least 6 boxes. people FRIDAY 27 May 2016 is a date that will live in my memory forever. It was on this evening, on the verandah of the Noosa Surf Club, that along with a handful of my club mates, I had occasion to meet with a group of children who really made us understand the meaning of the word courage. These kids had suffered massive burns and other injuries to various parts of their small bodies. To hear their laughter as they mingled and met new friends was indeed heartwarming. At first, they were shy and held back, but as the evening progressed they began to relax. The occasion was a fund-raising evening for an organisation known as the K.I.D.S. Foundation. The letters say it all; Kids In Dangerous Situations. Happy to relate our people opened their hearts and really made the children feel welcome. According to their Annual Report 2014-'15, the foundation was launched in 1993 by Ballarat-based former primary school teacher Suzie O’Neill; a lady not to be confused with our former Olympic champion who bears the same name. This entity is dedicated to, “childhood injury prevention and injury recovery.” “It all came about some years ago,” said Suzie, “when I suddenly realised that there was no rehabilitation centre for kids with serious injury. We have now opened our first

facility in Ballarat and now support up to 650 children a year. Most people don’t realise that some 5000 children are injured in Australia every day and have to attend an emergency department. Of these 200 will stay in hospital, and on average one will die. Ours is the only injury recovery and prevention charity that does this kind of work in Australia.” To say that this foundation is in the right hands is spot on, for Suzie has recently completed her PhD in education at the Monash University. ‘’Her thesis titled, Developing safety risk intelligence in children, has gained international recognition with three papers published in national and international journals.’’ The man responsible for bringing this organisation to our attention, Donald McKill, a member of the Noosa Heads Surf Club training team, was the master of ceremonies,

and the guests were welcomed and guest speakers introduced. In her remarks, Suzie O’Neill said, “I am overwhelmed by the support from the people of Noosa and indeed very grateful.’’ However, the highlight of the evening had to be when 20-year-old Mathew Thiele, Youth Ambassador, Volunteer and Spokesman stepped forward to speak. Mathew, himself a survivor of horrific burns received as a three-year-old child in a car crash said, “This gives us the opportunity to come out, mix with you people and make new friends and is very important for us. Thank you for your support and having us here tonight.” Apart from his work as ambassador, Matt helps run and maintain the Burns Survivors data base. This young man is indeed an inspiration, for despite his injuries he has overcome all, to obtain his black belt in karate.

Speaking on behalf of the surf club, manager Anton Mogg thanked all those involved. He then introduced two lifesavers Ken Edwards and Big Peter Williams, who will drive the support vehicle for the Coffs Harbor to Noosa Charity Bike Ride in August. This event is also part of the fund-raising program for the foundation. He then went on to acknowledge the presence and support of Councilor Joe Jurisevic and Scott Braby of the Sunshine Beach Surf Life Saving Club. ‘’We are only too happy to work for such worthy causes, and we will continue to do so as we believe our Noosa Surf Club has become an important part of the local community.’’ He then finished off by thanking Hasting Street Beach Houses for sponsoring accommodation and Peter Thynne of the Surf Club Restaurant for providing the excellent food. “Also a big thank you to our local

business houses who donated articles and holidays to be auctioned.” During the course of the evening, auctions were conducted and several private donations were received. As the group of one hundred guests mingled, enjoying the food and hospitality it became apparent from discussions, that all would be in support of helping whenever the need arises. After the function, Donald McKill said, “Locals who were in attendance but unaware of the big charity ride from Coffs Harbor to Noosa, asked about joining the team as riders. This is fantastic. It really was a great way to end the evening.” On the cover of the Annual Report for 2014-'15 next to a photograph of a child who has recovered from burns, there is a very poignant message from the children. Accept me for who I am, inspire me to achieve my dreams, give me courage to allow me to grow, and teach me to be safe -- or how will I know? Inspired by these words, people of our community are teaming together to give help to these children. The team is made up of Donald McKill organiser and charity bike rider, Anton Mogg and Peter Thynne of the surf club, David and Peta Woods of Hasting Street Beach Houses, Christy Johnston and Sheldon Shultz of the charity bike ride team from the Sunshine Beach Surf Life Saving Club, and Ken Edwards and Big Peter Williams, support team for the bike ride, both of the Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving Club. Having stood up to be counted for a worthy cause, we are only too happy to acknowledge them- as Our People.

Sports in festive seaside setting THOUSANDS of participants are expected to take part in this weekend’s 2016 Noosa Ultimate Sports Festival. The events will run across Saturday 28 May to Sunday 29 May, and includes a hive of festival village atmosphere and entertainment. Professional athletes including Courtney Atkinson, Luke McKenzie, Beth Gerdes, Radka Vodickova and Melissa Hauschildt are just a few names headlining the festival. Mark Beretta, from Sunrise on Channel 7, is the official event ambassador, and is looking forward

to joining the action in beautiful Noosa Heads. The festival offers a stacked line-up of events, including Swim Noosa, Cycle Noosa and Run Noosa, with a distance to suit all fitness enthusiasts. New to the line-up this year is the Noosa Ultimate Ladies Lunch hosted by Mark Beretta and triathlon royalty Belinda Granger on Saturday at Cafe Le Monde. Over the next few weeks, students representing their classes will participate in a competition where a selection of books are read and then questions are asked in a game show format in front of adjudicators. Readers’ Cup competitions challenge students to read widely, work collaboratively in a team and continue developing a love of reading. In a graded “knock-out" format, the winning classes from three year levels will be the teams that answer the most questions correctly. The concept has proven to be a real hit with students of all ages and a fun way to inspire reading with a little competitiveness between the classes. It also ensures all children at Noosaville State School see the fun in reading. Are buses the business? I HAVE read two articles on the electric buses trials in Noosa now - being the only source of information I have read on the subject I’m left a bit flabbergasted by the whole thing. I wouldn’t consider myself too ignorant or naive but being from a small business background and managerial positions, these articles leave me questioning my knowledge. In the business world I live in, if a company wants to sell a product to another one, very often the selling company would bend backwards to sell you their product (free samples, try-outs etc). Why do we (the ratepayers) have to pay for a trial? And if we do, why $550,000? Wouldn’t that be like buying the buses anyway? Also, what are the end benefits of using electric buses? 1: Saving fuel? So Sunbus can make more profits? I doubt we would subsidise them less. 2: Environmental? Yes. Also, this is not discussed in the papers, but what size of buses are we getting? Because what we really need is smaller buses (20 passengers or so) to go around Noosa Tewantin routes, especially the Noosa Heads area up Noosa Hill and the Junction, the big buses are most of the time empty and are so cumbersome and dangerous on those roads, we shouldn’t even have the large buses around Hastings Streets including Australia Zoo, Greyhound and Contiki Tours, we have a nice new “bus exchange“ at the junction. I wish I had a bit more info on the subject and I hope the council has really checked all those things out on our behalf and will do the best for us and our coffers. Valere Oddoux, Noosa Heads.

The original electric bus trial was for buses to have batteries and council purchased two battery chargers at a cost of $75,000. Unfortunately, the dream of battery operated buses to meet council specification was ahead of technology. The two already purchased battery chargers are not useable with the “Higer" Chinese manufactured capacitor powered buses. It appears council wishes to experiment with concepts that are not fully tested and ahead of technology at ratepayers' expense. Bats need love too REGARDING many recent letters concerning bats and koalas, I feel I must respond. Due to past and present councils allowing developers to destroy bushland on the Sunshine Coast these animals now have little suitable habitat left. Koalas especially are at serious risk of extinction - an appalling, unthinkable situation. This, along with dog and cat predation, is the cause of many problems wildlife currently have. These animals have lived here for thousands of years, and now we are impinging on their natural habitat for a few quick developer dollars. The situation needs to be urgently reversed before koalas are extinct. Councils and state governments must enforce dog and cat exemption caveats on future land developments. Dogs are a serious problem for our wildlife and I have seen many arrogant owners ignore 'no dog' signs and enter reserves and National Parks. While I sympathise with residents affected by bats, they should be blaming developers and council, not the bats. Where are bats supposed to live? They cannot be blamed for moving into suburban areas where there’s food and relative shelter as they have little other suitable habitat left. A huge public education program is required along with the necessary law changes and enforcement. Mark Jones, Sunshine Coast.

Danger road LET us work towards a safer Eumundi to Noosa Road, further upgrading is desperately required given the incessant danger to cyclists and pedestrians. The shoulder needs to be wider, especially through Doonan and Verrierdale.

As a frequent commuter on the road I often have to slow down to below 60km/h allowing a safe passage to overtake cyclists and avoid oncoming traffic. As the major gateway road to Noosa from the Bruce Highway we must lobby our local politicians to gain the necessary funding. We do not wish to see any further fatalities. Philip Heath, Doonan.

I WOULD like to make a comment about the Tewantin School swimming pool. Last Thursday morning (19 May) there was a P&C meeting and there were emails sent to parents saying the pool wouldn’t be discussed at this meeting. There were two of us and another lady who uses the pool regulary and me who has family using the pool. We were told to talk to the Education Department. At the same time this meeting was taking place there was a private meeting taking place at the pool with the school principal, Education Department, Infrastructure and a mum who had been invited along who took a friend for support. The people to whom the pool is leased weren’t there. I had two councillors who are very interested in the situation who wanted to be there but I told them about the emails so naturally they didn’t turn up. There is so much support for the pool and the people running the pool, we need to get together, do fund-raising etc. Why is there so much secrecy? We the community have a right to know what is going on. The pool is for the community too. Laine Harry, Noosa.

CLYTIE Glass makes a good point (Hospice Board is Slammed, ND 26 May) that the local community needs to be fully engaged with a low-key and tried model in bringing back KRC. By going for private hospital accreditation, the board is setting an unattainable goal as far as fund-raising and ongoing costs are concerned. Mental as Anything are heading to Noosa for a not to be missed show this month.

Rumour has it you’d be crazy to miss this show By MEGAN OGLE ICONIC Australian band Mental as Anything is set to hit Noosa shores next month but before they do founding member Andrew “Greedy” Smith talked to Noosa Today exclusively to set some rumours straight. Mental as Anything is one of Australia’s most recognisable bands. Their career has spanned more than 30 years with numerous chart toppers around the world. The old urban legend tells of a group of teenagers who passed themselves off as a band in order to get free beer in exchange for playing. Greedy says this rumour is true. “It was one of the early strategies,” he said. “We were very informal when we started to the point that we didn’t even have a name. We didn’t think of our name, it was the guy doing the poster. “The first time we were going to be adver-

tised we told the guy to pick a name and we left it to him. We didn’t know our name until we saw the poster in the street.” The group formed in 1976, around the same time Andrew Smith was crowned with his famous nickname of “Greedy”. Rumour has it Greedy acquired the nickname when before a Mental As Anything show he demolished the better part of a bucket of chicken prior to going on stage.

Another rumour Greedy said is true. “It’s a bit more involved than that,” he said. “We were doing a function at a college and we were setting up in a big empty hall and I had a keyboard on a table when someone brought in this big, long, white cardboard box which looked the shape and size of a keyboard. “I grabbed the box and set it up so it looked like I had a big keyboard rig set up,

it looked like I was playing two keyboards at one time, I felt very special. “And low and behold, the show started and I opened the box and it was full of chicken so I ate 16 pieces while we were playing. Reg Mobassa started calling me Greedy right away and it’s stuck.” Fast forward to 2016 and the iconic Aussie band is busy releasing new singles and touring local pubs again, possibly for the free beer, a rumour Greedy wouldn’t confirm or deny. Head along to their show at the Tewantin Noosa RSL to hear all your old favourites plus the latest two singles, Shake off Your Sandals and Goat Tracks in my Sandpit, and a third not yet released single due out later this month. WINTER is here so here’s an opportunity to warm up with the Dairy Kitchen’s delicious homemade chai latte. The Indian-inspired recipe is perfect to keep in the cupboard for those cooler nights or why not share the warmth and gift the tea bags to loved ones. Ingredients 2 teaspoons black tea leaves 2 cardamom pods, bruised 1/4 cinnamon stick or 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 3 cloves 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg 2 cups milk 1 teaspoon honey Method Combine all the spices to create a Chai Latte Mix. At this stage mix can be stored for up to a month in a sealed jar. Heat milk in a small saucepan or microwave until just below boiling point. Turn off heat, add spice mix and allow to infuse for 3-5 minutes. Stir in honey and strain out spices. Pour into tea cups and serve immediately. Pirate injuries By DAVID ARNOLD NOOSA PIRATES SATURDAY evening saw the Noosa Pirates travel to Kawana to take on the Dolphins in what was being billed as the match of the round. The Pirates started well and hooker Jayden Summers opened the scoring after just two minutes with Lauchie Gladman’s radar zoomed in, the Pirates led 6-0 after three minutes. The lead was extended at the nine minute mark when winger Darren Hall crossed in the corner. This came at a price when full back Jesses Jordan was injured in the play and was forced to spend the rest of the game on the sidelines. The Pirates led by twelve points yet another devastating blow was to strike the visiting team when hooker Jayden Summers was seriously injured in play while making a tackle. Jayden was struck accidently in the face by an opposition knee losing two teeth, and with blood streaming from his mouth he was taken by ambulance to Caloundra Hospital.

Under 11 Blue take on Caloundra Sharks. Coach Scott's son Cooper Christensen is a keen footy nut. In the meantime, the game continued and Kawana increased the pressure scoring twice and at half time the Pirates were cut to just two points taking the score to twelve to ten. Coach Scott Christensen urged his players on and although the pirates tried in vain, further injuries saw the bench resemble a MASH unit as the bigger opposition continued to score eventually being victorious 34 points to twelve. Training this week has been changed to Tuesday and

Wednesday to correspond with the State Of Origin. Don’t forget to hang around after training Wednesday night and watch the game on the big screen. This week’s games: Friday evening Under 18 Beerwah v Noosa at Beerwah from 7.45pm. Saturday afternoon Caboolture [2] v Noosa at Caboolture from 3.30pm. Young Pirates in action NOOSA JUNIOR PIRATES ROUND 8 UNDER 7 YELLOW Tackling skills were on display with the boys running up well and supporting their team mates. Declan put on a player of the match performance with some good runs, lots of energy and still getting up after a few hard knocks, and volunteering to be dummy half and first receiver. After playing an extra game to shore up numbers, Leroy earned an encouragement award for some good tackles and strong runs. UNDER 8 YELLOW It was a perfect day for some footy and the boys didn’t disappoint. There was some spectacular foot work and try scoring by Hayden, Solomon and Abraham as they broke through the tough defensive line. With this came some assertive tackling by Billy, Daniel, Cooper and Sam. Our player of the match Brandon Dwyer showed his talent for taking down the big boys and running through the line to put points on the table. UNDER 9 BLUE The game was played in great spirit with both teams giving it their all much to the delight of supporters watching on. The Noosa boys really made Bribie work hard with plenty of offloads and always backing each other up. This week’s Player of the Match was Kyroan O’Donnell. UNDER 9 YELLOW Under 9 Yellow had a great game of football over the weekend against the Bribie Warrigals. The Noosa boys took into their game the tackling drill we had been practicing at training. A courageous effort from Sam, taking to the field in the last third after putting his body on the line in front of Bribie’s biggest player. Callum and Taj were the ever reliables working tirelessly to keep their team in the game. UNDER 11 BLUE Under 11 Blue played Caloundra away. A couple of early tries to Caloundra saw the team off to a poor start but the boys hit back with some nice ball play from Ivan and Ben. A lot of penalties given against us saw the boys struggling to get any field position and so Caloundra got on top of us in the second half. Player of the match was Daniel, who

despite letting some plays go down his wing in the first half, aimed up in the second half when some of Caloundra’s fast runners came at him. UNDER 11 YELLOW This week the boys had a solid 24 to six win. Player of the match was Charlie Cook, who got involved in everything and played some strong footy and made some big hits. There were some big runs from Jackson Smith, Kai, Ashton Clifford, Riley Coster and Jarrah Breen, who all charged up the ground when they had the ball. Well done to Charlie Pearson in his first game of Rugby League, who tackled well. UNDER 12 GOLD Another big day of home games for our mighty Noosa Pirates saw the U12 boys take on the might of Bribie Island. After a slow first half the Noosa boys got back on top with Zane and Kynan’s damaging defence setting the platform for Digger and Ethan’s busting runs and slick dummy half play by Lucas. With Zac and Chance controlling the play it was only a matter of time before our back line kicked into gear to put the game beyond Bribie’s reach. UNDER 13 BLUE Player of the match Ashtyn played a spirited game scoring early and maintaining a very tidy game across all areas. Jai fired up with a lot of good meters made. Jeff was quick and keeping the opposition on their toes. Good support and backing up from Ben, Harry G and Harry N. Luis and Jake’s growing confidence is starting to show on the field. Top of the table, unbeaten Beachmere met their match today and with the improvement showing each week in Under 13 Blue we look forward to our next meeting. UNDER 12 GIRLS The girls played a gala day at Beerwah this week and with more and more Under 12s signing on, the competition is looking good. This Gala game was the curtain raiser to the Beerwah Open Women’s team verse Souths Brisbane. What an awesome occasion for our girls to be a part of. Savannah scored three tries and Xali kicked a goal. UNDER 13 GOLD The boys once again put on a great game of football for the spectators with the lead changing back and forth right down to the last play. We

ended up going down 34-32 to Bribie Island. Another great game boys, not giving up and fighting to the end. UNDER 14 GIRLS U14s travelled to Beachmere to take on a combined team of Beachmere, Bribie Island and Beerwah. It was a cracker of a first half with both teams running the ball hard, which resulted in some tough defence and desperate try saving tackles. The score was twelve all at half time, with Kaitlyn scoring a try after some big runs. The second half started out with the BBB team scoring quickly, our girls were exhausted after such a big first half but the girls kept trying and there were moments of great attacking play, as they kept on doing what they had rehearsed at training. The girls wore pink socks to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research. UNDER 16 GIRLS The under 16s had to forfeit their game due to a lack of numbers. However, five girls turned up to play in a scratch match against Beerwah who graciously gave us three girls so we could play an eight aside game. Our girls played their best game of the season. They ran the ball with plenty of purpose and they worked hard on dominating every tackle. It was a pleasure to watch the improvement in your game. Also to hear the team song after the game was unbelievable. Let’s regroup this week and get stuck into our next opponents with renewed vigour. UNDER 18 GIRLS The under 18s had a much improved start to their game. They forced a turn over on the first kick off and then attacked their line. The girls were hitting the ball up over the advantage line every time. They were also trying to dominate every tackle. Keely was a welcome inclusion back into the team this week making some massive charges down the field. Taela once again made some massive hits in defence and this week she ran the ball really well making some breaks and even getting an off-load away to Gabby who went on to score a try. A great effort from Gabby filling in at dummy half for the team this week. The improvement in both teams is very pleasing to watch. Keep up the good work girls.

ditch TEWANTIN NOOSA BOWLS THE Tewantin Noosa Bowls Club report this week starts with a sad note. On Tuesday 24 May long-time club member James Bain (Jimmy) passed away. The news of Jimmy’s passing touched plenty of members in the last week, Jimmy was always at the club either enjoying a cold beverage or performing hard work in many areas over the years. Many will remember him for his gentlemanly manner. He was involved in many aspects of the club and responsible for the Monthly Vets Pairs including sponsoring them. The club and members send sympathy to Jimmy’s family on their loss. The District Champion of Champions Pairs final at Coolum Beach Bowls Club was held on Saturday 28 May. Eagles are kicking goals By JULES ROSENKRANZ NOOSA EAGLES SOCCER NOOSA Eagles Soccer Club played at home this weekend, basking in the last weekend of autumn sun before we hit the cooler winter months. Under 6 Black played an exceptional game winning 5-1 against the Mooloolah Bandy’s with goals being scored by Kyro Kilgour, Myles Rollasson, Zach Ravezzani (2), and Ryder Macdonald. Ryder also took out player of the week for scoring his first goal of the season. Under 8 Gold defeated the Sienna Marlins 6-3, they started off slow but once they hit top gear they were unstoppable. After winning player of the week last week on his birthday, Joel Fitzgerald scored as well as his team mates Harrison Howard and Montannah Ward. Player of the week this week was awarded to Bella Hillegers for her big boots in goal.

THE Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving hosted its end-of-season Sponsors Breakfast on Friday 27 May. With some 66 people in attendance, it gave the club a golden opportunity to keep their sponsors abreast of the season’s activities. Greeting the guests, sponsors chairman Ross Fisher emphasised the importance of the sponsors in the life of the club, noting that they were in fact “partners in our club family.” For the official welcome, Ross called on acting president Peter Leek. After extending his sincere thanks for their outstanding contribution to the club, he then presented the beach statistics for the year. Patrol hours totalled 17,500 with 239 rescues being performed and visitations were estimated at 370,000. With regard to competition, he said, the season had produced possibly the most successful period in the club’s history with the results from the National Titles in particular being outstanding. In his closing remarks, he again emphasised his thanks for the support and generosity of all present. Perhaps, the highlight of the morning came when Ross called on the two junior captains for the forthcoming season, to come forward and be officially introduced. For the boys, it was Locky Younger and the girls it was Maggie Harmer. Both made special mention of their background in the club and left the guests with the feeling that here were two young lifesavers with the self-confidence to fully justify their appointment. For Maggie, her appointment emphasised the ongoing family tradition within the Noosa club. Her father Tony had been a patrolman as well as medal winner at state level while competing for Noosa in the boat section.

This Saturday 4 June at 4pm, old boys of the Noosa club will once again be called upon to rally at their club for a social evening reunion. This type of function has become more important each year, for as the membership increases, it is absolutely imperative that the past history of the club be passed on to the new members. This is essential for it not only builds a strong support base, but also helps create pride within the club. At this time of the year, there are important dates for our club-

bies to note. The members of Sunshine Beach are being reminded that their annual meeting will be held on 19 June, and club president Craig Law is hoping for a full attendance. For Noosa their annual dinner and awards and presentation evening will be held on Friday 24 June. For the majority of our competitors, the season is over. However, for Jordan Mercer, Noosa’s Iron Woman, one of the biggest events of the year the Molokai to Oahu World Paddle Championship held in Hawaii, is fast approaching. To say that this young

lady has become something of a legend in this international event is correct, for she has won the title an incredible five times. During the race, which will be held on 31 July, and conducted over a 55kl course, Jordan will be under the watchful eye of her coach and father Darren, himself an Australian Iron Man legend. “This will be her sixth race, it will be tough, but we are hoping all goes well,” he said. This year there will be a new addition to her support team, 16-year-

old Grace Kaihau. This young lady, a fast rising star in the Noosa competition team, was given a challenge by her parents. Win a medal at the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships and they would shout a trip to Hawaii to support Jordan. Coming home with not one but three medals she won the challenge and will definitely take her place as part of the support team. We wish Jordan, her family and supporters all the very best.

Fins win, lose with big margins U6 Dolphins IT was serious stuff down at Grammar for the U6s, just one game this week, and boy did they have some energy. Fast paced, fancy footwork, and a heap of friendly banter to keep us all smiling. Smashing tries from Cuan, Kellen, Rorke, Gus and four tries from Daniel. Players of the Match were awarded to Daniel Miller and Kellen Donoghue. U7 Fins 45 d Grammar Blue 20 The mighty fins have done it again with yet another blinder of a game against the Grammar Blues. With a defending line like a brick wall, the Blues struggled to get past from beginning to end, ensuring several turnovers of the ball to our favour. Jake, Harry, Kase and Myles passing skills and straight forward running helped the team be rewarded with several runaway tries on the turn over. This week’s try scorers were Uli, Jackson and a whopping five tries by Lachie earning him the prized reward. Special thanks to Callum for helping with numbers after having already played for his U6 team. Player of the Match was awarded to Lachie Walker. U8 Fins 100 d Caloundra Black 0 With a try being scored on average every two minutes, it’s a good job there were no linesmen for our game this week as they would have been exhausted. Caloundra Black were not given time to think during the game as the Fins mercilessly pounded their territory, stealing possession, ransacking weak defensive lines and laying waste to their try line. Uni got the scoring started and never looked back as the Reds were forced to defend with all their might, a few hard-earned team tries from Noosa meant a one-try deficit at half time and an uphill battle against a well-drilled team growing in confidence. Noosa were hot on attack and hungry for what seemed at times like an unlikely victory when Uni clinched a crucial turnover on their line to bring a nail-biting and entertaining match to an end. Player of the Match was awarded to Ritchie Bourne. U10 Grammar 29 d Noosa Red 19 Probably the best rugby from the Reds all year against a classy Grammar outfit. Scores were locked at 12-all at half time, but Grammar got the jump to race away before Noosa clawed their way back into the contest. Two barnstorming tries by Pearl and one cracker after the combination of Tom and Flynn worked their magic. Toby was unlucky not to be awarded a fair try, Hunter galloped tirelessly and Dylan produced an absolute corker of a game. Player of the Match was awarded to Dylan Wilson.

After too many silly penalties, they were quickly down by 14 points to a well-drilled Grammar team. Sam was moved into the forwards restoring speed and intensity at the breakdown with a quality effort. After that the Fins forwards settled with Jackson producing some great turnover ball and Matt toughening the middle up with some bell ringer tackles. With ball now in hand, the Fins raced in four unanswered tries from Joseph who continues to impress in his rookie season. A great effort from the boys to fight back from such a large deficit against a quality Grammar team.

The Rococos’ Noosa Tigers went down by four points to 2016 giant killers Aspley at Weyba Road last Saturday. Poor kicking for goal was a major reason behind the loss for Noosa however the first half dominance of the travelling hornets could not be understated. Aspleys’ young and exuberant small brigade were all over the favoured Tigers with only Stalwarts Duke, Isles and captain Hill as standouts as Noosa went into half time 28 points in arrears. It was Coach Sam Faure who kicked three goals in the premiership quarter to relieve the margin back to three points at the last break. The home Tiger crowd were more than excited as visions of their troops consolidating their second position on the AFLQ North Division ladder seemed likely, however two quick goals to the hornets extinguished that belief as the game turned into a thrilling arm wrestle.

We lost two of our most consistent players before the game; Brad Forbes with a torn patella and Adam Curry was rewarded for his great form and promoted to the senior team, but that didn’t stop us. Aspley started great, we knew they had improved and we identified their one avenue to the goals; one big forward. He scored two cheap goals, which is a credit to Lachie Camerons’ first game back after three weeks out with injury.

An honourable mention goes to Dylan Murray who was outstanding and his positioning around contests was exceptional. IT SEEMS like half the surfer population of Noosa has been in Bali this week, clustered in the village of Canggu, which is just across the creek from us at the northern edge of the south coast sprawl. The occasion was the annual Deus Ex Machina Nine Foot and Single contest, but it might as well have been renamed the Fete du Harry. Although Noosa surfer Harrison Roach has dominated this single fin festival in previous years, in nearly half a century of reporting on surfing events, I have rarely seen one person dominate so comprehensively, and create such a gulf between himself and his competitors. I am thinking back to Michael Peterson in the early ’70s, Mark Richards in the late ’70s and early '80s, and of course, Kelly Slater through much of the ’90s and ’00s. Each of these great surfers was virtually unbeatable in their era, but more importantly, they raised the bar for everyone else. Harry Roach raised the bar at the Canggu Rivermouth last weekend, and not just in traditional longboarding (for which he is best known) but on shortboards and body surfing too. I have been watching this guy surf (often with my jaw dropping and my eyes popping out of my head) since he was a grommet, and while it is always a treat to watch him carve those graceful lines across the face, frankly

I was beginning to think that his new focus on soul surfing in remote locations had perhaps blunted his competitive edge. Well, that theory went right out the window in Canggu. At 27 he is a naturally gifted athlete at the height of his powers, and when he is focused (not necessarily on winning but on shredding) he is unbeatable. He joins the pantheon of illustrious forebears. There were plenty of other gifted surfers on display at the Nine Foot and Single, including Harry’s Noosa home boys Josh Constable, Matt Cuddihy, Doc Bexon, Zye Norris and Tom Morat, but no-one was able to consistently take it to the next level. In the longboard final, Harrison locked it up with two near-perfect scores, then put on a master class of good, oldfashioned hot-dogging, mixing up coffin rides with backwards paddleins and fin-first take-offs. In the Womp Comp, held in challenging riptide conditions for swimmers, he flicked his body high onto the face and flew down the line ahead of the white water, arching his back to create a foil. Although swimming is just a sideline for him, he was technically perfect. I know our mutual friend Mark Cunningham would have been proud. But Harry saved the best for last. Switching from tiny fish to long raked guns as he progressed (and swigging a refreshing beer between heats) he just went mental in the Under Nine Foot division, held in perfect Rivermouth Rights, fanned by a light offshore breeze with barrels opening up for him as if on command. running out of superlatives. Only old rival Josh Constable came close to spoiling the party, when a solid performance looked like keeping Harry out of the final until he pulled a 9 from thin air in the final minute, which is a very Kelly thing to do. With the surf peaking for the final, Harry’s first deep barrel set the tone for what was to come, getting the perfect score from one of my fellow judges. The rest of us saw a couple of technical flaws, but when he did it again on a bigger wave and went even deeper and stayed there

longer, he was not to be denied. Not content with dominating in the water, Harrison Roach was also the main attraction back at the Deus Temple, where the flock gathered to worship and watch film-maker Dustin Humphrey’s latest production, South To Sian, which documents Harry and Zye’s most recent excellent adventure, surfing and dirtbiking in dreamy locations the length of the Indonesian archipelago. And it’s a great flick. To prove he’s not just a pretty face, Harry wrote and read the narra-

tion script for the feature, and helped out in the edit suite. And to prove none of the adulation has gone too much to his head, when the star of the show saw your elderly columnist and wife struggling to find a seat in the packed open-air cinema, he leapt forward to save us from the crush and made space for us on the VIP lounge. Look, he’s not the Messiah, but he’s not a naughty little boy either. He’s a talented guy and a surfer who is really starting to make a mark internationally. Oz third overall in World Sprints By JO SEARLE HELD over 10 days at Kawana Lake, the Outrigger World Sprints 2016 attracted more than 2000 paddlers from 35 countries (invited), being the largest World Sprints event ever. Australia was third overall behind the strong New Zealand and Tahiti teams. Noosa contributed to the Australian tally, achieving three World Records, as well as outright wins and through combining with other clubs to clinch a total of five Gold, three Silver and six Bronze medals. The World Records were achieved by the Master 70 Men in the final of the V6 500m, with one turn and their heat of the V6 500m straight, and by the Master 50 Women in their V6 500m straight heat. Noosa’s Ted Baker was part of two World Championship teams along with Mooloola-

ba paddlers, winning the V12 500m and V6 1000m with turns in the adaptive sprints. The Noosa Master 60 Men also clinched World Championship in the V12 500m, teaming up with Surfers Paradise. Hugh Bingham, Noosa and Australia’s oldest competitive paddler was in the Noosa Master 70 Men team that clinched World Championship in the V6 500m with one turn. Noosa Master 70 Men also won silver in the V6 500m straight. In addition, Jo Terrans from Noosa got Bronze as part of the combined Central Coast and Pananuma team in the V12 500 Women Master 70 sprint. Rose Edyvean is World Champion for the V1 500m in a time of 2:50.07, in a strongly contested final that saw all eight paddlers separated by just over eight seconds. Congratulations also to Roger Arbuckle, Di-

ane Arbuckle (both Master 70) and Des Mabbott (Master 60) who all contested the finals in V1 500m. The Noosa Master 60 Men won silver in the finals of both V6 1000m with turns and V6 500m straight. The Noosa Master 60 Women won bronze in their finals for these same race distances. The Noosa Master 50 Women won three bronze medals, firstly through teaming up with Outrigger Australia in the V12 500m, then in the V6 1000m with turns and V6 500m straight. In the Master 40 Men and Women, Noosa teams competed in the strongly contested events, making it through heats and repechages and into semi-finals, while paddling some of their fastest times. Overall, Noosa paddlers achieved extremely well in this strong international event and they’re stoked with the outcomes.

In the week following the World Sprints, focus turned to distance paddling, with the National Marathon titles held last weekend at Mooloolaba. Again Noosa paddlers showed their prowess, taking Gold in the 10km short course Platinum Master Men and Golden Master Women divisions, as well as Silver for the Senior Master Men and Bronze for the Senior Master Mixed team. Noosa’s Ted Baker joined with Mooloolaba paddlers to contest the Adaptive Men’s division, winning Gold and coming 13th overall in the large field. This was a mass start race with 57 canoes hitting off from the beach in an action- packed shuffle for lead positions. In the 18km Women’s long course, Noosa Master Women clinched Gold and in the Men’s 22km long course, the Golden Master Men (1) also won Gold with the Golden Master Men (2) taking Bronze.

Good catch for anglers By JACK MANGROVE ANGLERS were out in force during the last weekend! With the weather nothing short of sensational, it stood to reason that anglers would be out in force. Noosa’s North Shore was busy with four wheel drivers making their way up the beach in search of the best gutter to fish. Turning right coming out of the first cutting was a good option with some quality tailor and bream coming from the waters down towards the river mouth. Deep gutter are a little hard to find at the moment, so Burley is a good idea when fishing the surf; dropping small pieces of bait into the water will help to bring the fish up. Up toward Double Island, chopper tailor, bream, dart and flathead have all been taken. Mullet, pilchards, prawns and worms have all got the job done. The Noosa River has been alive with trevally, good numbers of giant, tea leaf and golden trevally have been taken around Woods Bays, Munna Point, the back of the Noosa Sound as well as up towards the Tewantin ski run. Small fish bait like frog mouthed pilchards, hardy heads and white bait have worked well, but most anglers have been fishing soft plastics. The Keitech Easy Shiner is one of my favourites in the three or four inch sizes, coupled with a 2/0 TT jig head in 1/6 weight has been working well. With so many noosatoday.com.au

prawns in the river, another plastic that has been working well is the Fuse Prawn heads. Down toward the river mouth, the Dog Beach and the Frying Pan have been fishing well for whiting, worm, pealed frozen prawns and yabbies have all been great baits. Nice-sized flathead have also been on the chew with the run out tide the best to target them. Again prawn profile soft plastics have been working well. The offshore scene has also been firing with some great reports coming from the closer reefs. Starting with Sunshine Reef, nice trout continue to come from the bottom as well as large jewies. Live baits have been the key. There are still quite a few mackerel around at the moment with North, Halls and Chardon's reefs all recording captures last week. Pilchard floater still seems to be the way to go. The Barwon Banks have again been firing with large snapper and quality pearl perch. Up toward Double Island, big amber jacks, gold spot cod, snapper, pearlies, and red emperor have all been hitting the decks. Micro Jigs have again been coming into their own with the flat fall jigs working especially well. These jigs tend to make their way to the bottom more on the horizontal, resembling a dead or dying bait fish. Some of my favourites are the Colt Snipers from Shimano and the vectors from TT.
