Glad she made the move BY JUSTIN FLYNN IT’S a long from Perth to Geelong West, but Valerie Pearson is glad she made the move. Valerie moved to the region two months ago after she moved departments with the Bureau of Statistics, which opened a brand new office in Geelong recently. She loves her new home even though her mobility is temporarily restricted after she broke both her ankles recently. “There’s lot of similarities (between Perth and Geelong). Both are close to the ocean, which I enjoy. Geelong is growing and developing all the time. It’s got a similar feel to it. “What’s not to love? I’m not really a ‘big city’ person, so a regional centre the size of Geelong suits me well.” Due to Valerie’s injuries, she hasn’t seen a lot of Geelong West yet, but it made an immediate positive impression. “People in the shops and restaurants are really friendly, which you don’t get all the time in
Perth. I’m loving it. I bought a nice old weatherboard cottage and the area I’m in is fantastic.” Valerie has been working for the bureau for 19 years, but was offered an exciting opportunity. She worked in the Provider Contact Unit in WA and is now with the Household Survey Program in Geelong. “I quite like moving around,” Valerie said. “I decided to move across and I’m doing a sligjhtly different role. The new office is spacious and it’s a brand new fitout. It’s nice to be able to follow different careers within the same organisation.“ Valerie lived in the northern Perth suburb of Joondalup and she follows the West Coast Eagles in the AFL. So how will she go living in rabid Cats territory? “It’s going to be very interesting,“ she said. “I’ll have to go out dressed in my Eagles gear and see what sort of reaction I get.”
Valerie Pearson broke both her ankles and is whizzing around on her mobility scooter for the time being. 152616

PAKO people The Voice on Pako took to the streets of Geelong West to ask: “What do you think of Grill’d planning to build a new franchise in Pakington Street?”
““““““ It would probably do good business. But I don’t normally eat burgers.
JOSIE TALARICO, 57, MANIFOLD HEIGHTS
Another burger place is always good. Grill’d is better than Maccas and other takeaway food.
STEPHANIE BYRNE, 31, GEELONG WEST
That would be good – it’s central for us. It’s an ideal spot I reckon.
RITA PERICH, 64, BELL PARK
I just moved down from Melbourne and I enjoy their burgers up there. They’re a tasty burger.
CHRIS TARANTO, 43, ST LEONARDS
I think we’ve got enough burger places, thank you. What I want is a wonderful vegetarian restaurant in Pakington Street.
ERICA MOONEY, 78, GEELONG WEST
I don’t mind it. I hope their burgers are good. I’ll give them a try.

Running Injury? A small problem, repeated thousands of times when you run can overload your body and cause injury! Injury may occur due to inefficiency in the way you move, or poor running biomechanics. It may be due to weakness, tightness or body dysfunction. To overcome your injury, and run pain free, the reason for your body ‘overload’ must be identified and a plan put in place to regain full function. This may involve running analysis, correcting body dysfunction, strengthening, movement reeducation and/or stretching.

FIRE gutted a Presbyterian church on Geelong West’s Pakington Street. The fire has been described as suspicious, with the CFA believing it began about 4am. The weatherboard church had been “destroyed”, the CFA said. Detectives are urging a man, who may be a potential witness to the fire, to come forward. Geelong Crime Investigation Unit detectives have been told the potential witness was riding a dark coloured mountain bike near the scene before he stopped to watch the Pakington Street blaze for a short time. He engaged in conversation with another man, who police have spoken to, before riding off just after 4.30am. Detectives want to speak to the man and have released footage of him riding

He was wearing a cap underneath his bike helmet, a black and white striped shirt under a blue hoodie, shorts, and fingerless gloves and was carrying a light yellow or cream backpack.

CARDIOVASCULAR HEALTH One of my favorite topics is cardiovascular disease and high blood pressure! Why? If genetics were the only factors involved then I would be a ticking time bomb: my family has an array of high blood pressure, stents, arrhythmias, artery blockages and heart attacks. A massive 21.5% of Australians have high blood pressurei and more than half of those affected take medication to help. New research is suggesting that we need to start looking at cardiovascular disease in a whole different light, not merely as a disease of the unhealthy or genetically ill-fated but instead as suggested by Dr. Mark Houston: “hypertension is not a disease but the correct chronic response from infinite insults to the blood vessels”ii. Infinite insults? Sounds daunting! But on the upside it is something we can manage, with the 3 main responses being inflammation, oxidative stress and vascular dysfunction. Here are a few things you can do to help yourself in the battle against cardiovascular disease.
Amazing architecture THE Baptist Church was constructed on donated land in Aberdeen Street, Newtown, in 1876, to provide the growing congregation with a larger building than the adjacent sandstone church built in 1854. It was designed by Melbourne architect Thomas Watts, however the Ballarat architect, Henry Casselli, who designed a number of churches, lodged the tender notice for this church and may have had some involvement in the latter stages of the project. It’s made of polychromatic brickwork, set on a rusticated basalt base. Cream brick is used to provide contrast to the red brick building, emphasising arches, buttresses and the corners of the building. The church is of simple gable form with protruding front bays which flank a central entrance porch. It is designed in an overall Romanesque style, with some Gothic detailing. The Baptist Church was one of the last nonconformist denominations to accept the Gothic style, previously associated with the Catholic and Anglican Church, and this may explain the tentative use of this style. Double pointed arch openings allude to the Gothic style, however they contain round-headed window openings. Other details are Romanesque, such as the wheel window, raked corbel tables and the central, double arch entrance, contained within a large round-headed arch. The church is of architectural significance as one of the first of the churches erected by this non-conformist group to incorporate Gothic features.Today, the church is in constant use with Sunday services at 10am with Bible study/ prayer meeting/fellowship on Tuesday nights, fortnightly Thursday recreation and table tennis on Friday nights.
• Be at a healthy weight and exercise regularly - Approximately one in three obese people have high blood pressure, compared to about one in eight underweight people or people of normal weight. iii One of the most effective means of lowering BP is to decrease your weight and this is far more effective when combined with exercise. • Fish oil - For moderate hypertension 4giv of fish oil a day is recommended as this can lower blood pressure by 8/5mmHg. The easiest way to get this high dose is to take a good quality liquid fish oil. • Garlic - in particular Kyolic Garlic which is an aged extract. Taken regularly this can lower blood pressure by 11/6mmHg. Kyolic garlic also has evidence demonstrating its ability to treat metabolic syndrome (obesity, high cholesterol, diabetes and high blood pressure). • Coenzyme Q10 (Ubiquinone) - A study found that there was a deficiency of Coenzyme Q10 in 39% of people with high blood pressure vs. 6% of control patients. An analysis of 12 trials showed an average decrease in blood pressure to be 1117/8-10mmHg with daily supplements of CoQ10. It can take up to 2 months to see results using these approaches to lower blood pressure and always speak to a Pharmacist or Doctor before starting any complementary medicines. Please come in and see me to chat about your medications whether they be prescription or otherwise.

The show features anecdotes and stories from those who remember Col, as well as never before heard recordings of Col in performance. “Col’s story has been sitting patiently in a locked wooden dresser for over 25 years, as a time capsule of treasured memories,” Joel said. “It’s time for his story to be finally told.” Stardust: The Col Brain story runs for three performances at GPAC on 6 May, at 6.30pm, 7.30pm and 9pm. ABC Radio National’s “Earshot” program will record the show, which will air on ABC Radio National at 11am on 26 May. For more information visit www. abc.net.au/radionational/programs/ earshot/

FOR more than 25 years, a locked wooden dresser sat in the family garage of Geelong West musician, Joel Carnegie. The chest is the once-prized possession of Joel’s grandfather, Col Brain, one of Geelong’s most wellregarded musicians of his time. But Col’s wooden dresser hadn’t been opened since he died. So what was inside? Introducing “Stardust: The Col Brain Story” - a new ABC RN cabaret radio show, to be recorded as part of Geelong After Dark 2016. Joel - the show’s writer - said Stardust acknowledges the legacy of his grandfather. “Col Brain was an incredibly respected musician and teacher across Victoria,” he said. “He left a legacy in the music he played, the students he taught and in me.”

TRAVEL on pako Karin Vanner – helloworld Geelong West
Much to see in South Africa We then travelled to Soweto where we met a family who told us of their amazing story and journey in every day life follwed by a vist to Nelson Mandela’s home where he lived from 1946-1962. Cape Town, I felt, had so much to offer. I was fortunate enough to stay at the Table Bay Hotel which overlooks the water and Table Mountain where I could watch the seals below from my room. Table mountain is a must do. The view was truly beautiful, and if you are adventurous, you can also abseil down. I love my Great Ocean Road here in Victoria but oh wow they also have an amazing road that takes you to Cape of Good Hope, a definite must do. Along this journey you get to view many varieties of animals including the jackass penquins nearby Simon’s Town. From Cape Town to Pretoria, we travelled on the Blue Train for a one- day/night journey which would take you back in time and where kings and
presidents have indulged on this five-star ‘Hotel on Wheels’. Now you can do this also. I have also been lucky enough to visit some truly amazing safari lodges where you travel in open vehicle to view the ‘Big 5’ and many more animals in the private game reserves. Madikwe Hills overlooks the bushveld which offers luxurious glass fronted rooms where I watched lions walking past my rooms while still in bed. I was gobsmacked the least. Mala Mala was also one of South Africa’s best known camps for many years and is very reliable to see the ‘Big 5’. Accommodation is under traditional thatched roofs with spectacular views. I can keep going on, but I must put my pen down now as I am waiting for you to come into helloworld Geelong West at 1/226 Pakington Street (corner Autumn and Pako) for us to talk about your next exciting venture to South Africa. I HAVE had the pleasure of travelling to this amazing country called South Africa twice while working in the travel industry. There is still so much to see in this diverse country that I must visit again or I will never forgive myself. From cities to coastline, this country offers so many different varaties of safaris and accommdation that will suit all needs. Johannesburg is the first entry point for many travelling to South Africa where you may only stay a day or two. We stayed at hotel which was quite funky and in a lovely area called Marble Arch where we felt very safe. While in Johanesburg, we vistied the Apartheid Museum which gave a chilling account of the rise and fall of apartheid in South Africa . “To be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others,” Nelson Mandela, June 1999.

Having just returned from the ‘picture perfect’ Amalfi Coast and Adriatic Coast of Croatia, Dalma Travel owner and manager Rashida Przastek is inspired to help jetsetters plan a smooth and eyeopening trip overseas. “It’s my passion for travel that keeps me going,” she says. “The only way to really explain places to clients - where to go, what to do, what to eat, what to see - is to go there and experience the place first-hand.” After befriending Italian locals in Sorrento and the Bay of Naples, exploring Capri, Ana Capri watching millionaires sailing the playground of the rich and famous, Rashida then took an eight-day tour of Slovenia, Croatia’s magical Adriatic Coast with Globus Cosmos where she travelled in a luxury coach with all the comforts (wi-fi available on board, excellent
driver to keep you safe and the tour guide so professional). She then went on her annual visit to England where she indulged herself with an affordable dinner cruise on the River Thames, a unique way to see London by night. Authentic Japanese cuisine IF THE reviews on social media are anything to go by, Sakuratei Japanese Cuisine in Manifold Heights is a gem. The recent addition to Geelong West’s culinary culture has been reviewed as one of the best Japanese restaurants outside Japan. And that’s from well-travelled tourists as well as locals who have discovered the authentic delicacies served with a minimum of fuss. The real strength of Sakuratei is the extensive menu, with everything from soups and entrees, main courses of ramen, udon, bento boxes and curries to desserts. The teriyaki chicken and beef have proved popular, along with the dumplings and hot-plate meals. Owner Flora says although some meals are not necessarily on the menu, the kitchen is happy to entertain special orders. A range of specials is available at the sushi bar along with a takeaway service - and all at very affordable prices. Not only are the various dishes freshly cooked, they’re served by friendly and knowledgeable staff. After four years in busy Shannon Avenue, Sakuratei has developed a loyal band of regular customers, Flora says. Sakuratei also has a customer car park for eating patrons. The restaurant is open 10am to 10pm Monday to Saturday and 5pm to 10pm Sundays. Sakuratei is at 161 Shannon Avenue, Manifold Heights, phone 5222 6668.

I WAS after a buttery chardonnay. You know the one. It melts in your mouth and almost sticks to the sides of your throat. This came recommended, and even though it’s a perfectly drinkable wine, it failed the ‘butter’ test dismally. Did I mention that I like my chardonnays buttery? This was more like a sav blanc, quite acidic. My litmus test is what I call the ‘Beringer challenge’. My favourite chardonnay is a Beringer Reserve from the Napa Valley in California. It’s sublime and for my palate, no other chardy comes close. However getting back to this drop, it comes from the Adelaide Hills and the nose captures hints of citrus and you can taste the French oak in the finish, which is reasonably lengthy. Don’t get me wrong - it’s a perfectly drinkable wine - just not buttery or with the hint of vanilla that I enjoy. After I got over the initial disapointment - which was with the recommendation, not the wine itself - I actually enjoyed it in its own right. It retails for around $27.50.
I BOUGHT this as a little gift for myself for my birthday earlier this month. I’m a massive fan of Barossa Valley and Heathcote shiraz and this little gem didn’t disappoint. Although I’m a wine novice, I do love big, bold, in-your-face shiraz and was looking forward to getting stuck into this wine. Firstly, it’s not a kick-arse shiraz. It’s quite refined, but there’s enough ‘there’ to know you’re drinking a bold red. The nose was rich and powerful and it’s a medium to full bodied wine. I could taste hints of plum and berry flavours with a touch of vanillan cedar. It’s an easy drinking wine, but it has flavour and the mouth-feel lingers just long enough to savour it after the swallow. I’ll definitely be buying this wine again. I really enoyed it and will probably have enjoyed it a few more times by the time you read this. It’s available locally for around $25 per bottle and obviously I highly recommend it.

Food glorious food BY ALLIRA POTTER, @GRUB_GUIDE HELLO fellow foodies,Winter is coming, so time to start building that immune system up. I’ve started having lots of fresh garlic, turmeric and ginger as well as taking a delicious local fire tonic daily (posts on my Instagram). I am dreading it, more so the fact of my skin drying up and the risk of getting sick increases for me. But fear not we have so many flavoursome cafes around Pako to keep our bellies full and our bodies warm. This month we headed to Pakington Fare a newly opened cafe down the river end of Pako. We were greeted by manager Taf who gave us the low down on the menu and wonderful specials. I ordered the Turkish breakfast which consisted of a beautiful rich tomato-based sauce with baked eggs. This is defiantly a meal that you could devour after a big night out. The dish has a side of pickled cucumber salad, olives and traditional Turkish bread (yum!).
Nathan ordered the chef ’s special breakfast board filled with a Scotch egg, granola, banana bread and other delicious treats. It’s the sort of meal you could order if you didn’t know what you wanted and wanted to try bits and pieces. The Scotch egg was cooked perfectly and the homemade relish to accompany was a match made in heaven.
Pakington Fare is rather large and can house large groups as well as tables for two. They have an outdoor area perfect in those warmer months. The menu is small but changes regularly, they even have a kid friendly menu. All the amazing sweets are made in-house and they are sure to make you drool.
We loved Pakington Fare and we are sure you will too, head down there and see for yourself. Geelong is producing some amazing food and cafes; it’s such an exciting time to be living here. PAKINGTON FARE 5/321-327 Pakington Street Newtown, corner Pako and Nicholson Street.

New take on health THE IN8 Life opens its bright green door at 53 Hope Street, just off Pako, to the vibrant community this May. Co-founders and husband and wife team Dr Sam and Dr Gabriel are excited to offer a never-before-seen way of approaching health. Their creed: Heal - Thrive - Be Awesome! challenges pre-conceived ideas of what healthcare should look like. ‘We recognise the fact that inside each and every one of us, there is more perfection and possibility to heal, regenerate, adapt and thrive, than many of us have ever been permitted to believe ... We want our clients to be empowered and feel that they are the directors of their own health,’ explains Dr Sam. “It is simply not enough these days to rely on our doctors to fix our problems for us with pills and potions. It is our goal for each and
every one of our clients to discover their own perfect doctor within.” With a background as chiropractors, this duo have continued to hone their skills and develop a comprehensive all-encompassing way of viewing your health. It is their role to help you discover your health ‘baseline’ using detailed and scientific analysis; understand or help you to set your health goals; and then finally to help guide you and support you on your journey to reaching your fullest potential. The IN8 Life presents itself as a bright and stylish open space, that is far from what you might expect to see in any other clinical or wellness setting. The studio offers services to aid in pregnancy, birth and then all throughout life, and the modern family friendly atmosphere reflects this. If you come through the door,
you might want to have an adjustment, stay for a cup of tea while you peruse the library, or stay on for a film night or any number of their regular health and lifestyle classes. Over the past five years, Dr Sam and Dr Gabriel have been living in Europe where they created one of the largest natural health and healing studios in Northern Italy. They are now excited to bring this new approach down under. When asked to sum up what they offer, Dr Gabriel simply says, ‘You were perfect in the beginning, let us show you again how you can be that awesome you’. The IN8 Life is sure to be a huge asset to the community and invites you to pop by and check out this exciting new space. www.thin8life.com; 5298 1838
