Robot team is programmed HILLCREST Christian College has congratulated its Robotics Team which recently represented the college and Australia in the International VEX Robotics competitions in Louisville, Kentucky, USA. The team gaining 72nd place in its division which was very good for its first showing in such a competitive and prestigious event which involved more than 500 teams from 31 countries. Afterwards the students came back highly enthused and eager to apply and share all they had learned. The school congratulated Nathaniel Pfeiffer, Toby Woodhouse, Mena Elchagie, Tom Austin and Joshua Thiele. There was also special thanks to the Head of Science Simon Taylor and the Head of IT James Poulos for leading the adventure and not getting lost as they ended up unexpectedly having to drive for 15 hours straight from Houston, Texas, to their destination. Mr Taylor said that competing in the invite-only event was a big achievement for the school. “I don’t think in college history they’ve had any type of team invited to compete overseas or somewhere like America,” he said. Principal Gregg Weaver was very excited by the invite and unofficially labelled the invite as the “biggest news in college history!” The VEX robotics group was started as an extra-curricular activity at the college by Mr Taylor and grew to include a girls’ team.

Graffiti eyesore By ALANA MITCHELSON THE graffiti at Cardinia Road train station and along the fence opposite the Toomah Community Centre is a “disgrace”, according to a local government representative. Councillor Collin Ross said he would lodge a motion at the next council meeting to urge Metro Trains to clean the graffiti at the site as well as
other graffiti hot spots near railway stations across Cardinia Shire. “Graffiti is a scourge, and an eyesore to our local area. Council spends tens of thousands of dollars cleaning up this vandalism,” Cr Ross said. “This graffiti on Metro Trains’ land needs to be removed. Council legally cannot go onto this area and clean it up.”
Cr Ross said his main concern was the negative connotations graffiti carries with regards to community safety. “Graffiti leaves a terrible image of our home in Pakenham and Cardinia Shire,” he said. “This graffiti has been at the area near Cardinia Road station for years and years, it is even expanding with new graffiti. “The quicker the graffiti is removed

THE Lakeside Bendigo Bank branch has combined with Lakeside College to reinforce the environmental sustainability message. Recently, the bank held an exchange program - swapping old halogen bulbs for new environmentally-friendly LED lights - and for every registration the school made through the branch, an electrician went out and changed over the bulbs. For every bulb that was changed, the school received a
dollar from the bank. “Because it’s an environmentally-friendly program, we had to align it with something similar at the school, something that was going to help with the environment,” said Lakeside Bendigo Bank branch manager Campbell Connell. “We opted for the HPV because it’s powered by the human body.” The bank presented the school’s HPV (Human Powered Vehicle) team with a cheque for $250. Each November, the school
has a presence at the 24-hour HPV race in Maryborough and each participating team has to raise funds to maintain its own vehicles. The Lakeside team is comprised of about 20 students across the two vehicles. Through the event they took turns behind the wheel, preparing food, and encouraging their team mates. It’s an exercise in mental and physical toughness, and a great sense of camaraderie and mateship is built among the students involved.

The majority of those homes are located in the south-east, including Dandenong (34), Cranbourne (22), Noble Park (15), Hampton Park (11), Narre Warren (10) and Pakenham (9). Protective Service Officers (PSOs) also got hit with a fair whack of abuse. The data recorded 47 assaults against PSOs within the outer south east region - 36 reports in Dandenong, 10 reports in Casey and a single report in Cardinia. Pakenham police Senior Sergeant Graeme Stanley did not deny the inherit dangers police members faced when out on the street but assured rates were low within the local unit. “No member is currently off-duty due to injuries received on-duty,” he said. Assault categorised under Section 31 of the Crimes Act 1958 takes in actions that intentionally or recklessly injure or insult a person or deprive them of their liberty. Statistics show the rate of assault against emergency workers including police and ambulance staff in the region jumped 53 per cent in the past five years.
POLICE working the beat in the outer south-east are victim to a shocking number of physical assaults. And they aren’t the only ones. Data released by the Victoria Police crime statistics agency shows an disturbing rate of assaults on paramedics and hospital staff out to help those in need in Cardinia, Casey and Dandenong. Last year, there were 240 reported cases of police assault in the region. Exactly half of the assaults occurred in the Greater Dandenong area, which recorded 121 police-targeted attacks. Casey recorded 97 police assaults while Cardinia recorded almost a fifth of that total with 22 assault reports. Emergency workers, mostly paramedics, were also a target for assault last year. Five emergency workers in Dandenong reported being assaulted on the job and a further three assault reports were lodged in the Casey region. Alarmingly, paramedic abuse and assault rates jumped by almost a quarter in the past five years to the extent that some homes are now ‘blacklisted’ - not

JULIE Cini has a gruelling job - to prepare mums watching their children die. The chief executive and founder of the Hallam-based charity Spinal Muscular Atrophy Australia has been wise counsel for thousands of families torpedoed by SMA in the past decade. Not many others empathise with the cruel twists of being an SMA parent or patient. Children born with this rare inherited disease progressively lose motor neurons that are the means for crawling, walking, feeding, coughing, swallowing and breathing. This month Ms Cini of Berwick launched a second edition of her self-published book Leaving Life Legacies. It is an account of how she bounced back from a personal tragedy that many would find unspeakable. Less than three years apart, Ms Cini’s two baby daughters Montanna and Zarlee succumbed to type-one SMA. While pregnant with Zarlee, she lost her partner Ross Brownlaw in a road crash. Ten years on, Ms Cini said she marks her loved ones’ birthdays and anniversaries. She holds brilliant memories but for the rest of the year, she just wants to make a difference. The charity was founded soon after losing Montanna. “So when I see (my daughters) again, I can say I did everything I could for fighting that disease.” She doesn’t sugar-coat the bitterest of pills for any parent. There’s a point when their child’s quality of life has so waned, they have to let their child die. “Emotionally it’s really hard. I can look at a child and know they will be dead in six weeks. “You’ve got to let them down so gently.” Ms Cini tells new families there is hope and options. Diagnosis is earlier, and over-
seas research into treatments is promising. There’s more effective treatment that allows kids with type-two SMA to live longer. For those with the more severe type-one, there are emerging clinical injection trials. “There’s a girl in Hallam who after her first round of treatment is doing quite well. She’s still alive at 18 months. “To see that girl lift even just a paper cup and drink from the cup is amazing.” In her latest book edition, Ms Cini outlines coping strategies. Her main advice is that families have to do what they think is best for their child. Don’t blindly follow orthodoxy or others’ examples. Readers - not just parents of SMA kids - regularly tell her that the book is inspirational. Ms Cini’s national charity offers counselling, advice as well as the loan of 30 vital machines that induce coughing so SMA patients can expel infections from colds from their lungs. These machines allow children to stay home or go on family holidays rather than fighting colds in hospital. “That’s the thing I like about my job - seeing families and kids enjoying their life.” Ms Cini suspects there a few type-one families, still in denial, who haven’t been in touch yet. It takes courage for them to make that call, she said. Of her own triple-edged grief, Ms Cini said she learnt quickly that it wasn’t going to go away. Ms Cini often asks bereaved parents what their late children would want them to do. They’d want mum and dad to be happy, she said. The house has sat at 32 Somerville Road since it opened, and is now in limbo due to HPPS’s $5.7million redevelopment. Government funds delivered over two years means the school can replace portable classrooms with eight permanent ones.
HPPS principal of five years Leoni King says the current location of the school house impacts the school’s new design. “We looked at relocating it on school grounds, but the way the grounds are situated makes it very difficult to do that because it would be taking up playground space,” Ms King said. “And it means that the rest of community can’t use it during the day.”
Possible places for relocation are Margery Eastick Reserve and Cairns Road Recreation Reserve among others. The young Hampton Park Men’s Shed has also approached council with their interest. IT CAN almost be called an antique; this sentimental icon of Hampton Park faces demolition. The Hampton Park Old School House may be destroyed as soon as October, unless a new, suitable home is found. In the Casey council planning scheme, the school house is covered by a heritage overlay. However, that listing is rendered futile due to the house’s location, on school grounds, at Hampton Park Primary School (HPPS). Strategic Planning and Environment manager at the City of Casey Nicola Ward advised due to its heritage listing, typically the house would “require a permit from council for its demolition”. But this is “not the case for government schools as all Department of Education land is exempt from the requirements of planning schemes”. Ms Ward said, “despite council having no statutory ability to prevent the demolition of the building, we are proactively working with the HPPS to seek more appropriate solutions”. Such solutions include relocation of the school house, built in 1922, with possibilities stretching as far as Berwick, at the Old Cheese Factory. But Ms Ward said, “discussions regarding this are in their early stages and no decisions have been made”.

They will subsidize the tax cuts for those 25 per cent of Australians on higher incomes. What pensioners lose on the loss of energy supplement those on $80,000 or more will gain as reduced tax. Scott Morrison took from age pensioners last year. They are hit again. The poor will continue to subsidize the wealth creation schemes of the tax avoiders and those who negative gear property. This is a tax concession that distorts the property market and diverts financial resources from investment in increasing the productive capacity of the nation. Those on $80,000 per annum or more will continue to have available for them more tax avoidance opportunities. The massive subsidies to superannuation for high income earners has only been slightly adjusted. Meanwhile those on average incomes will continue to face massive bracket creep. What will be the response of our local federal member for La Trobe? My guess he won’t stand up for his constituents but will fall in with the party line. CASEY residents have saved the equivalent of 24 backyard pools of waste from landfill. Statistics from Planet Arc’s product stewardship program Cartridges 4 Planet Ark shows Casey residents and businesses recycled 25,541 printer cartridges in the past year. This means 260,506 printer cartridges have been saved from clogging up landfill sites since 2003 by Casey residents. If sent to landfill, printer cartridges can take between 450 and 1000 years to break down. IT SEEMED like someone swallowed the angry pills prior to Dandenong Magistrates’ Court sitting on 9 May. After unloading on a police prosecutor, a fired-up man was given his marching orders from a case consultation. The man was apparently facing a charge of steroid possession. His accompanying girlfriend was asked by a bemused prosecutor if the man had been recently taking the illicit substance.
COMMUTERS flooded Twitter with complaints about Narre Warren railway station’s saturated car park. Kath Stammers tweeted on 10 May: “Oh look it’s rained at Narre Warren station again”, accompanied by an image of the car park submerged in shallow waters. Ms Stammers told Star News it was the third time in two months the car park had flooded. A Metro Trains spokeswoman said the local creek’s waters had risen above the drain pipe level, which impeded draining, which happened “time to time“ during heavy rainfall. In the long term, Metro Trains was working with Casey Council to create a better drainage system, the spokeswoman said. “Our maintenance team is currently investigating the issue and is engaging a third party to assist with trough cleaning (clearing the blockage) to eliminate the water in the car park.“

CONSTRUCTION has commenced at the Casey Fields Cycling Precinct on a $2.87 million project that includes a new BMX track, car park, pavilion and track lighting in an initiative that will provide upgraded facilities for the racing community. Joined by City of Casey Deputy Mayor Mick Morland, Balla Balla Ward Cr Geoff Ablett and Mayfield Ward Cr Amanda Stapledon, State Member for Cranbourne Jude Perera turned the first sod on 6 May to mark the beginning of the building process, made possible due to a $1.37 million Labor Government contribution. Mr Perera said that the project will make the Casey Fields Cycling Precinct a hub for local racing enthusiasts. “We’re getting it done for cyclists and BMX fans all over Casey. This upgrade will provide a fabulous home for budding riders to do what they love,” Mr Perera said. SOUTH-EAST musicians have come up gold. Three of the region’s most talented performers were picked for Melbourne radio station, GOLD 104.3s, ‘BuildA-Band’ competition and one hailing from Cranbourne. The Jo and Lehmo show asked listeners to, quite literally, build them a band to perform at their Pure Gold Live concert, at the Palais Theatre on Friday 13 May. And Melbourne chose wisely. Dubbed ‘Band of Gold’, the group is made up of five musicians, and includes a Pakenham guitarist, Cranbourne bass guitarist and a drummer from Cockatoo. Cranbourne’s Brendan Parsons was voted the best man to play bass guitar by GOLD’s listeners. The 27-year-old warehouse worker told GOLD’s Jo and Lehmo that “music is everything� to him. “Can’t imagine not playing music. I have recurring dreams of being on stage and my stuff not working and it happened.� Rikki, the only female band member, had her first drum kit at age 12. The 24-year-old warehouse worker from Cockatoo told Jo and Lehmo she’d practice on

‘Hopeless’ case By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A MAN who crashed his car through a Kooweerup home’s front fence while trying to pick up his mobile phone under his seat has been described by a judge as being in a “hopeless” situation of homelessness, drug addiction and poor mental health. Adam Wheatley, 33, fronted Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 9 May on charges including careless driving and fleeing the crash scene without exchanging his name and address. On 14 June, Wheatley lost control of his car on Rossiter Road when he tried to recover his phone after it fell from its dashboard holder. He fled on foot from the unregistered car, which was substantially damaged by the crash, the court was told. Wheatley later told police that he’d hit the brakes as he reached for his phone. “It happened so quickly,” he allegedly told police.
Wheatley was also charged over three petrol drive-offs in Cranbourne North, the theft of a $79 portable speaker from a Pakenham store, and possession of a hand-made metal knife with a sharpened end. He was also charged with the possession of deal bags of cannabis and ice in his car at Narre Warren railway station in December. Wheatley had a diagnosed intellectual disability, and was periodically homeless over the past 12 months, his lawyer Nadine Daniel told the court. She said Wheatley had taken positive steps to rid himself from an entrenched ice and cannabis addiction by self-admitting himself to Casey Hospital earlier this year. The addiction was linked to his offending, she said. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen noted that Wheatley’s rehabilitation should be the focus but it hadn’t been the accused’s focus in the past. “It’s difficult to know how
much he is willing to change. Everyone in the cells says they are willing to change. In the past, time served in custody “didn’t seem to serve any purpose”, Mr Vandersteen said. In addition, a court-imposed drug treatment order was cancelled due to Wheatley’s lack of engagement in 2014. Wheatley had also failed to comply with a recent community corrections order for petrol drive-offs. Mr Vandersteen said Wheatley’s offending was at a lower level but his situation of homelessness, drug use and mental illness was “quite hopeless”. Wheatley was sentenced to 13 days’ jail - already served in pre-sentence detention - and a 12-month community corrections order. The accused was disqualified from driving for six months, and ordered to complete 40 hours of unpaid work as part of last year’s CCO.
Intruder caught in the act By GEORGIA WESTGARTH A SIXTEEN-year-old girl was allegedly caught rifling through electrical items inside a Narre Warren home. The teenage intruder threatened to injure the homeowner when he confronted her and attempted to grab his iPad back. The daylight invasion at an address on Hermitage Rise in-
volved a group of five crooks, four of whom got away. The female offender was chased down by police and sprayed with capsicum spray due to her violent behaviour. She was charged and remanded in custody. The afternoon attempted burglary occurred on Thursday 5 May, about 3.30pm. The group of five offenders

Sampson’s ‘plasticity’ By ALANA MITCHELSON TODD Sampson is balanced upon a three-centimetre wide wire, with a 21-storey drop on either side of him. His eyes are fixed directly ahead. After an initial shaky failed attempt, Sampson combines all of the skills he has trained his mind to learn over the past four years to examine the human brain’s potential. He focuses all his energy on slowly making his way to the opposite building. As his feet find the concrete, the 46-yearold collapses into the foetal position and breaks down in tears. Up until that moment in the Redesign My Brain television series, it is easy to forget that Todd Sampson is no superhuman. But Sampson has challenged himself above and beyond the perceived capacity of most ’ordinary’ people. He has climbed a 120 metre rockface in Utah’s Moab desert blindfolded,
successfully performed a blindfolded Houdini water escape with 30 kilograms of chains and five combination locks, and completed a skywalk between two 21-storey buildings without a safety net. The adventurer attributed his success in each instance to the science of brain plasticity: forced adaptation to dramatically improve and “redesign“ the brain. He admitted to a packed room of Casey Cardinia businesspeople that his skywalk had not resulted in him conquering fear. But he had conquered the ultimate test of regulating his emotions to achieve a goal. “For years science has told us that our brains are fixed, that our brains develop until we’re about 25 and then roughly around the age of 30 there is a steady decline,“ he said. “Now we know that this science is false. There is no biological reason for our brains to become less flexible as we age.

That’s the revolution.“ Sampson said the most important skill in business today was “mental flexibility“, a characteristic that each of the most successful people to have walked the planet have in common. He said there were a number of ways to improve brain plasticity including forced adaptation, visualisation techniques to improve memory capacity, and meditation to help concentration and stress. “A great example of forced adaptation that everyone can try at home is to brush your teeth with your non-dominant hand. You’ll notice it’s a difficult task but the more you train your brain, the easier it becomes,“ Sampson said. “Lack of sleep is one of the biggest challenges. Less than eight hours a night over time reduces your IQ. We consolidate memories as we sleep and that’s when the plasticity process happens.“ Sampson described the fear he experienced during his skywalk as “excitement without breath“. “The brave are not without fear. The part of the brain responsible for fear - the amygdala - is not born blank,“ he said. “We all live with levels of fear and anxiety. But it can be managed to the point where fear is no longer an issue.“

Shitbox in shipshape By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS YOU’VE got to wonder what could be fun about nursing a 26-year-old Corolla for a 3000-plus kilometre trip across Australia. Narre Warren brothers Scott and Glenn de Jong - or team What’s A Spark Plug - had been on the waiting list for several years to enter the car on the Shitbox Rally. The annual event pits 200 ‘shitboxes’ - each costing less than $1000 and dressed up with designs such as Thunderbirds themes and blow-up dragons. The rally cruises south along the eastern seaboard from Mackay to Hobart between 7-13 May. In recent weeks, the de Jongs had to slightly upgrade from a 1988 Ford Laser because it cost too much to fix. Speaking to Star News on 10 May, the brothers said their Corolla, touched up with a navy-blue paint job and a racing stripe, was proving a stayer. It had been driven up to Mackay and successfully made it at least half-way back down the eastern seaboard - a total of 5400km. Some rally-goers haven’t been so lucky. One car in their buddy group truly lived up to its shitbox billing by breaking a fan belt four kilometres into the event. After its repair, it only lasted another 150km. But these setbacks are all part of the fun, as is camping out during a typical tropical-Queensland drenching. The team watched their tennis shoes

Keeping the dream alive By RUSSELL BENNETT THE Pakenham Warriors Big V Basketball Youth League Two men’s side has well and truly kept its playoff hopes alive with a win over their namesakes, the Maccabi Warriors, at Bialik Stadium in Hawthorn East on Sunday afternoon. Coach Simo Pajdic’s Pakenham side jumped out to a 10-point lead, 21-11 at quarter-time thanks in no small part to its superb defensive pressure, which forced Maccabi into a series of ill-advised shot attempts. On the other end, Pakenham’s outside shooters continued to find good looks on the perimeter. But costly turnovers from the visitors kept Maccabi within reach. Pakenham led 44-28 at half-time but Maccabi - coached by former Melbourne Tigers NBL head coach Al Westover - refused to lie down and got the margin back to within single digits late in the game before ultimately coming up short 69-59. For the visitors, Lee Belton was a constant offensive threat both in the paint through his dribble penetration and from the three-point lane with his pullup jumper. He finished with a game-high 16 points on 6-13 shooting including two treys. Tobie Dean also shone with 15
points on 5-12 from the field. After the game Pajdic said he was happy with how his side controlled the contest given a host of regular firstchoice players were rested for the clash. “This was a crucial win for us,” he said. “The next month will tell us if we’ll play finals or not.” Pakenham has a crucial doubleheader this weekend - first on Saturday afternoon against Chelsea, and then on Sunday afternoon away to Corio Bay in Geelong. “We’ve been winning ugly lately, and our bigs have been our strength - despite two of them never playing rep (representative) ball before and the other one only a minimal amount,” Pajdic said. “We had a really hard look at ourselves after the Craigieburn game (an 83-81 loss in Round 6) and a few home truths were said throughout the group. “They (Maccabi) came back at us in this game and if that happened a month or so ago we might’ve folded or panicked, but we weathered the storm. “We’ve got a lot of things in practice we’re looking to improve on, and then take into games. “This is a huge month coming up for
us and we need to do well to keep ourselves in the frame for the finals. “If we get the chance, we need to put the foot down against teams and not let them back in.” In other Warriors news from across the weekend, Jeff Reid’s Division 2 men’s side crushed the North East 9773 off the back of outstanding performances by Hayden Davey (25 points, 11 boards, 5 steals and 4 assists), Ben Gaze (21 points), and import Kenneth Hall (11 points, 9 boards, 3 steals and 3 blocks). The Warriors trailed by 12 points at quarter-time but turned that around to lead by two, 52-50, at the main break. They then put the foot down in the second half, while impressively restricting the North East to just 23 points. Darren Thomas’ Division 2 Warriors women, meanwhile, can hold their heads up high after a gallant showing against the high-powered Coburg offence. Pakenham led by eight points after the first quarter and by six at half-time but faded over the final two quarters to go down 83-61. They’ll host Keysborough this Saturday from 7pm at Cardinia Life, while Reid’s men’s team heads to Hillview Stadium in Rosebud to battle the Western Port Steelers from 7.30pm.

FFV STATE LEAGUE 5 SOUTH - ROUND 6 WAITING for victory to arrive in the state leagues, Pakenham United was bludgeoned by high-flying Rosebud Heart in a 0-5 loss. Not even home field advantage on Saturday made a skerrick of difference as the Heart pumped goal-after-goal into the Cougars’ net. Pakenham United was without usual goalkeeper Jarrod Reynolds, leaving the hard yards in the box to Harry Webber. The up-and-coming keeper toiled, despite what the score-line suggests, to keep a fair few out of the back of the net. But Webber couldn’t stop the rampage from Heart’s David Greening, who booted a hat-trick for the visitors while Beau Sharpe and Aaron Young finished the rout. United surged after the main break, but nothing went their way as the decisions mounted against them, leaving their efforts unrewarded by the final whistle. “We didn’t worry their goal in the first half, but the second half we came out with renewed vigour,” Neill said. “We had one cleared off the line, a penalty that wasn’t given and a goal that went in and was somehow flagged offside. “We could’ve brought it back to 3-2, but luck wasn’t there for the day and for all the hard work they put in for the first 25 minutes of the second half.” The injury/unavailable list made life hard for the Cougars too, with striker Keegan Bloomfield sitting out with a broken leg among a few other first choices out of the side. “Our team is so injury ravaged - we lost our first team strikers to a lack of interest and injury so we’re really begging up front,” Neill said. “Really wanted to keep the two teams together - reserves with reserves and seniors with seniors - to blend and get on and learn in a particular group. “We haven’t been allowed to do that - things are chopping and changing in the senior team on a weekly basis and haven’t given us an opportunity to settle yet.”

Wickers cranking it up a few gears By DAVID NAGEL BERWICK has rubber-stamped its premiership-favouritism tag in SEFNL with a brilliant 31-point victory over Cranbourne at Edwin Flack Reserve. The only downside for the Wickers stems from an investigation that is taking place into a lastquarter hit by co-captain Madi Andrews that left Cranbourne midfielder Mat Fletcher knocked out and motionless on the ground. But the real story on Saturday was the Wickers ability to absorb a thrilling start from Cranbourne and take control of the contest as the day wore on. Cranbourne kicked three goals in the opening four minutes, and then defied what seemed to be a Berwick bias around the ground to draw within three points at the 15-minute mark of the third term. But the Wickers slipped into another gear, impressing coach Rhys Nisbet with six of the next seven goals to extend out to a match-winning lead. “That was clearly our performance for the year, we stepped it up a level against good opposition in a high-quality game of footy,” Nisbet said. Madi Andrews was brilliant for the Wickers, running himself into the ground, while Luke Sheppard and Ash Smith were at their instinctive best across half back. Tim Gunn and Luke Nelson covered for the relatively quiet days of Ben Kearns and Mark Weekes, kicking five and four goals respectively, while Kurt Batt showed some quality in his first game in navy blue. Aaron Bower, Dylan Cavalot and Luke Bee-Hugo were best for the Eagles, while Marc Holt kicked three from limited opportunities. At Pakenham, six goals to Ryan Hendy and four to Darren Allen helped steer Doveton to a nine-point victory in a high-scoring affair at Toomuc Reserve. Pakenham had similar contributions from key-forward Ben Fraser, five goals, and left-footed maestro Luke Walker, four, but
in the end the Doves had the answers when it mattered most - the final quarter. The Lions led by 15 points early in the final term before the Doves kicked six of the next eight goals, with goals to Hendy, Allen and Russell Gabriel putting the imperial seal on victory. Doveton defender Tommy Agar was too brave for his own good, knocked out, but it seemed to inspire his side in the dying stages. Sam Raru, Aaron Davey and Ryan Morrison were all effective for the Doves, while Fraser played his best game for the Lions. Stevie Wright was determined in a tagging role on Davey, while Chris Cardona and Beau Wheeler stood firm on a day when defenders were constantly under the pump. Narre Warren made it three wins on the trot after an electrifying start led to a 137-point victory over Hampton Park at Fox Road. A 9.5 to 1.1 first term led to a 52-point lead, allowing coach Heath Black to experiment with Cranbourne and Berwick on the horizon. Darren Sheen kicked six, Jake Richardson four, while Dean Kelly and season-debutant Kain Baskaya slotted three apiece. Jayce Kelly and Nathan Reid played well for the Maggies while Cory Phillips never stopped trying for the Redbacks. And finally, Officer made it two wins from its last three games with a grinding 33-point win over Tooradin at Starling Road. Defensively the Kangas gradually turned the screws against the Seagulls, allowing them 3.5 in the first, 3.1 in the second, 1.3 in the third, before basically suffocating them with a one-point final term. Brandon Moore continued his fine form for the winners, while Nick Redley, Blair Allan and Matt Clarke snagged two each. Andrew Dean and Paddy Chin slotted a couple each for the Seagulls, while the Muling boys, Adam and Josh, continue to set a high standard around the ground. Beaconsfield had the bye.

Ladder shake-up points to vulnerable By DAVID NAGEL THE vulnerability of sides with heavy VNL commitments came to the fore on Saturday with Hampton Park and Tooradin suffering huge losses as a consequence. ROC’s emphatic 57-18 victory over the in-form Tooradin could inspire the Kangaroos, and give them a real sense of purpose after winning two of their last three outings. Brilliant performances from Sam Neil (GA), who herself scored 13 goals in a quarter on Saturday- and the midcourt dash of Ash Barnett (C), Gemma Stacey (WA) and Sophie Tracey (WD) showed that their win against Pakenham in round three was definitely no fluke. The Kangaroos scored 18 goals in a quarter - that’s brilliant netball in anyone’s language. But - as good as the Kangaroos were - this
result definitely says more about the Seagulls than the Roos. What it says is that the Seagulls rely heavily on their bookends, Kelly Haynes (GS) and Jess Maher (GK), who were both missing on Saturday as they prepared for their Peninsula Waves outing on Saturday night. Pakenham girls can thank their lucky stars they had a huge lead tucked away under their bibs after falling asleep in the last quarter for a 42-39 victory over Doveton at Toomuc Reserve. After an even start the Lions roared away in the second and third quarters, Lauren Briggs (GS) in sensational touch under the ring, sharing the scoring duties with daughter Michelle (GA) in the second quarter, and with Chloe Maas (GA) in the third. All the usual suspects played a
part, with Meaghan Winter ((WA) and Rebecca Cox (WD) working wonderfully well either side of Meaghan Musgrave (C) in the middle, while Olivia Hunt ((GD) and Samantha Jelo (GK) were brilliant during that middle phase of play. Samantha Kappl scored 28 goals for the Doves, who had Breanne Miller (WA), Linda Hunt (WD) and Abbey Dean (C) try hard through the midcourt. A fast-start has failed to provide Berwick with its first win of the season, the Wickers mowed down by a fast-finishing Cranbourne outfit, 4333, at Edwin Flack Reserve. The Wickers had the Eagles under wraps in the first half, taking a one-goal lead, as Sarah McDermott (C), Emily La Roche (WD) and Katrina Meredith (WA) had control of the midcourt. But a change came over the game
in the second half, Alanah Hardy (GA) shooting brilliantly as Tegan Stahl (GS) turned provider. Darcy O’Donnell and Ash Honan shared the ‘C’ bib with full effect in the second half as the eagles piled on 26 goals to 15. And finally, last year’s grand final replay turned into bit of a fizzer with Narre Warren giving Hampton Park a 53-14 thrashing at Kalora Park. The Magpies were particularly brilliant in the first half, Tayla Shannon scoring 21 goals as the home side kicked out to a 29-5 lead. Tayla handed over to Kealeigh Brown (GA) in the second half, with TerriLee Brettoner (GD) and Carly Stagg (WA) also getting some rare court time in A Grade. Jessica Wilkie and Amber Dunn-Marler did show some promising signs for the Redbacks. Beaconsfield had the bye.

This Merc is a performer By EWAN KENNEDY THE Mercedes-Benz A-Class received a facelift at the start of 2016. At $53,500 the A 250 Sport is relatively easy on the bank account and provides a solid turn of performance that’s fine for everyday use. For the 2016 season A-Class gets additional technology, with all versions now having adaptive suspension and satellite navigation. The Mercedes A 180 has 17-inch wheels, Garmin Map Pilot navigation, blind spot assist, reversing camera, keyless start, Dynamic Select modes and a sporty diamond grille in black as standard. The A 200 has 18-inch wheels and sports seats with lumber support. The ultra-hot AMG A 45 4Matic now produces 280 kW (up from 265 kW) and can get from zero to 100 kilometres per hour in just 4.2 seconds. We will cover powertrain details of our A 250 Sport test car in a moment. The A-Class is no longer the tiny car aimed at finding parking spots in overcrowded European cities, the latest generation is longer, sleeker and lower. The so-called diamond grille treatment works well and we found the red paint on our test car a pleasant change from the 500 shades of grey currently making our roads like we’re living in a black-and-white movie.

Standout style on the Mercedes A250 got plenty of favourable comments during our week’s road test. The sports kit on the A250 is anything but shy and retiring and grabbed plenty of looks while we were driving it. Also in a red hue is the stitching on the dark trim on the seats, door and dashboard that certainly tie in with the Sport badges. Ambient interior lighting can be tailored to suit your needs by providing 12 different colours. The 2.0-litre A 250 Sport petrol has 160 kW of power and a wild 475 Nm of torque running through a sevenspeed dual-clutch automatic. It uses the Mercedes 4Matic allwheel-drive system, sits on 18-inch AMG wheels, and Ride Control suspension. Five different driving modes are offered, everything from Comfort to
Race. The latter, naturally, only intended for track use. In a sign of the times, the days when Mercedes saved up its new hightech items until a new S-Class was introduces have gone. So rapid is the rate of technology change that the company is now, somewhat reluctantly we suspect, forced to add tech to the next model it launches. Waiting for an S-Class would otherwise see it lagging for years behind competitors at times. The A-Class is the first Mercedes model to be available with smartphone integration for Apple CarPlay and Siri voice control. Mercedes’ latest Comand infotainment system works well and we enjoyed the quality sound system.
The latest Mercedes-Benz A-Class has multiple driving assistance systems, including the drowsiness detection system Attention Assist, Distronic Plus, Collision Prevention Assist Plus and Blind Spot Assist. There are nine airbags to minimise damage to the occupants should everything still go wrong. An Active Bonnet setup minimises pedestrian injury in a collision. The front seats are correctly shaped to give good support without being overly aggressive. The rears are on the tight side if the people in the front are tall. The adaptive suspension system, now fitted to all A-Class models, provides the sort of ride comfort that’s close to its bigger brother the C-Class.
That’s in the Comfort setting, when sharpened up by dialling in Sport it becomes a genuine hot-hatch to let drivers enjoy a traditional early Sunday morning drive. Some passengers may find it slightly harsh on rough roads, though. Handling through the all-wheeldrive 4Matic system is tenacious and easy to control and defies the fact that the A-Class began its life as a frontdrive family hatchback. Engine performance is excellent and the Mercedes engineers have managed to trim turbo lag to a minimum. Engage the Sport mode and it not only gives more power, but also builds downshift blips into the automatic. Love it! The smallest Mercedes-Benz AClass has been further refined in this latest iteration. We love the look of the Sport body kit and the engine and chassis dynamics will bring a smile to the face of those looking for performance at a relatively modest price.
