Seahorses in final hurrah AS THE official lifesaving season comes to an end across the coast’s beaches, the Noosa Seahorse Nippers have a final hurrah like no other. The Noosa Seahorse Nippers give children with special needs the opportunity to take part in water activities under the watchful eye of Seahorse helpers. On Saturday (30 April) the Seahorses took part in an obstacle course involving simulated potholes, waves and big surf. Former Olympian Dawn Fraser was on hand to present awards to the participants who, on all accounts, looked to have had a day to remember.

Join the Koala Army NOOSA Shire wants to mobilise residents to save the shire’s threatened koalas. Residents can now have a say on council’s plan to protect the cuddly tree-dwellers with the release of the draft Noosa Shire Koala Conservation Plan. Head to the Council’s Your Say Noosa website or view a hard copy of the plan at Noosaville and Cooroy libraries and the mobile library during the next six weeks. ‘Pop-ups’ at libraries will be manned by council officers and councillors, at various times, where residents can ask questions and have their say. Mayor Tony Wellington said the draft plan followed extensive consultation with key stakeholders, such as koala protection and environ-
ment groups, plus members of the public. It aims to protect koala habitat on both private and public land, improve education, community awareness, data collection and mapping. It will also consider targeted wild dog control in koala hotspots. “The Draft Noosa Shire Koala Conservation Plan details more than 20 actions to help achieve these aims,” says Cr Wellington. “These include an audit of current koala infrastructure such as protective fencing. Council support for University of the Sunshine Coast local koala research will be ongoing. “The Draft Plan also promotes Land for Wildlife programs, Voluntary Conservation Agreements and other incentives to encourage private landowners to help protect koala habitat.” Cr Wellington said council had already
completed some of the actions, including koala mapping and use of the koala-tracking dog. “There are some important vegetation linkages that cross jurisdictional boundaries and Noosa Council will need to work with Sunshine Coast Council and Gympie Shire Council to help protect this habitat,” he said. The Draft Noosa Shire Koala Conservation Plan follows on from council’s adoption of a koala policy last year. “The actions we take to protect koalas will also improve biodiversity in the local area by assisting non-target species,” Cr Wellington said. “We look forward to hearing from residents across the shire. Muscles get behind a mum A LOCAL fitness business is putting its money where its muscles are in a bid to raise funds for a local mum. Tewantin mum of three Roz Harper is set to benefit from a fundraiser being hosted by local small business Peak Personal Fitness on Saturday 7 May. Roz was diagnosed with a rare form of brain cancer in 2009, and surgery has been unable to remove the entire tumour which continues to grow. Roz and her family are now car-
rying the burden of a second round of intensive chemotherapy to battle the cancer. As part of a campaign of community support to raise funds for Roz’s treatment, local personal training business Peak Personal Fitness will be running a fund-raising event. Peak Personal Fitness owner Rob McPherson said the fund-raiser would coincide with the launch of a new group fitness program. “We wanted to launch our new group fitness program, Noosa HIIT
Squad, and I wanted to give something back to the community,” Rob said. “Helping someone like Roz and her family with her treatment is such a worthwhile cause that needs our support and is what community is all about.” On Saturday 7 May people are invited to participate in one of six 30-minute Noosa HIIT Squad group exercise classes run by Peak Personal Fitness for a gold coin donation. Participant donations on the day will
be matched dollar for dollar by Peak Personal Fitness, and all proceeds of the event will go to Roz Harper’s Brain Cancer Fund. In addition, there will be a sausage sizzle during the morning and various kids’ activities will be on offer. “I’m urging people to come along, give a gold coin donation and participate in one of the sessions,” Rob said. “The sessions will be challenging and most importantly a lot of fun.
I’m really hoping that the local community rallies behind Roz and her family by attending this event.” The fund-raiser will be held from 7.30am to 12pm at the Mat Thornhill Oval on McKinnon Drive in Tewantin. Exercise classes will be run at 7.30am, 8.15am, 9am, 9.45am, 10.30am and 11.15am. Pink buns make all the difference LOCAL breast cancer survivor and musician Tracey Combes and Bakers Delight Noosa Junction are rolling up their sleeves to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer during the Bakers Delight Pink Bun campaign. From 21 April to 11 May, Bakers Delight Noosa Junction will join over 600 bakeries throughout Australia to raise $1.5 million for Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA) in this year’s pink bun campaign. Now in its 11th year, all proceeds from the sale of the pink buns go directly BCNA through this colourful and delicious fundraising campaign. Money raised from the pink bun campaign supports essential BCNA services
including the creation of the My Journey Kit, an information pack provided to people newly diagnosed with breast cancer. BCNA’s Chief Executive Christine Nolan said it was predicted that nearly 16,000 Australians would be diagnosed with breast cancer this year alone. Every day 43 women in Australia will be told they have breast cancer and seven will lose their lives to the disease. “Bakers Delight bakeries across the country donate 100 per cent of the Pink Bun sales throughout the Pink Bun Campaign to support the vital work we do and to fund the much needed My Journey Kit,” she said. “BCNA’s My Journey Kit, a free resource

Political double act By MEGAN OGLE LOCAL issues will be top priority as Noosa Mayor Tony Wellington and Noosa MP Glen Elmes kick off their monthly meetings this month. The Noosa TAFE, Beckmans Road, the Noosa River and job creation were the top agenda items with Mr Elmes saying Noosa residents will be the ones to benefit the most from the regular meetings. “Meeting with Cr Wellington means I can hear about local issues a lot sooner. “A lot of what we can accomplish is to cut a lot of these things off before they become a problem,” Mr Elmes said. Cr Wellington said he had already started discussions with Mr Elmes about Noosa’s top issues especially the Noosa River and TAFE. “They are being prioritised by both of us,” he said. “We recognise there’s strong community interest in both those issues as there is with Beckman’s Road and, of course, that doesn’t complete the list. “I have a list couple of dozen issues to discuss with Glen,” Cr Wellington said. Mr Elmes said his connections within the State Government and Cr Wellington’s relationship with local residents and community groups would help to create quicker

Library for learning skills NOOSA Library Service is calling for volunteer tutors to help deliver its Community Literacy Program. Tutors work one-on-one with program participants to help improve their literacy and numeracy skills. Noosa Council manager of libraries and galleries Kerri Contini said the new program was invaluable. “Given almost half of Australians aged 15-74 years have literacy skills below the minimum level required to meet the demands of an increasingly knowledge-based society, this program is invaluable,” she said. “Not everyone is comfortable in a formal or traditional education environment and so this program presents an alternative, offering a communitybased service in a supportive environment where people feel safe and comfortable - their local library. “The program suits people who may struggle with day-to-day tasks such as reading to their children, completing forms, understanding instructions and managing the family budget. “The Noosa Library’s literacy program is very successful because it works on an individual basis to help a learner achieve an individual goal. “We’ve also seen an increase in requests for assistance from people from

help change the course of participants’ lives,” Ms Contini said. MP's petition to oppose 'vote rigging' NOOSA MP Glen Elmes has called upon voters to stop the Palaszczuk Government from “rigging” the next state election by signing an e-petition. Mr Elmes has accused the Queensland Premier of dodgy motives with the passing of recent legislation which will see changes to the voting system in the next state election. “Without any consultation with the people of Queensland, Annastacia Palaszczuk and her Labor Government made a backroom deal to unwind our democracy by passing legislation in the middle of the night to reintroduce compulsory preferential voting,” Mr Elmes said. “For more than 20 years, Queenslanders had the right to choose how they voted, but now the Palaszczuk Labor Government has stripped
that right away. “Now Queenslanders will be forced to vote for candidates and parties they may neither know nor want to vote for. “If they don’t, their vote won’t be counted at all. It should be our choice how we want to vote and how we allocate our preferences, if at all. “That is why the LNP has launched a campaign to stop the sneaky changes to Queensland’s voting system and give Queenslanders’ their choice back at the ballot box. Mr Elmes said the e-petition gives Queenslanders an opportunity to tell the Government to “scrap their sneaky plan” and bring back choice at the ballot box. Take care when making an arrest, police say POLICE are urging community members to exercise caution after a recent citizen’s arrest of a suspected thief in Peregian. Local media reported that two men apprehended a 26-year-old man as he tried to flee after a break-in at a Friendly Grocer supermarket in Peregian on Sunday night, 1 May. Noosa Heads acting officer in charge Senior Sergeant Dean Holmes said the two men’s actions were brave, however citizen's arrests were a tricky issue. “We urge community members to exercise caution in these situations, don’t put yourself in danger or at risk,” he said.
“Community members have to be careful not to cause injury to the suspect or use disproportionate force. “The circumstances are different for each case, but community members can help by calling police and getting a description of the person or the vehicle or by letting police know which direction the suspect fled.” Lee Gerard Heath was arrested on Sunday night and has been released on bail with conditions including he stay at his parents’ Peregian Beach home, abide by a 7pm-6am curfew and consume no alcohol or illicit drugs.

New private hospital for locals THE Sunshine Hospice board has confirmed it is busy raising funds in the hope of creating a purpose-built facility for local residents. Better known as the Katie Rose Hospice, 84 people died in the freecare community facility last financial year, and Sunshine Hospice chairman Dr Frank Lewins said the facility saved Queensland Health over $1 million. “If we hadn’t existed, those people would have to be cared for in the public hospital and those people would have cost Queensland Health over $1 million,” he said. While well-used, the facility relies on donations and the hard work of volunteers to operate and was forced to cease operations last year due to a lack of funding. Member for Noosa Glen Elmes worked with the hospice board to secure emergency funding from the government, but Dr Lewins said the funds came too late and were too little. “We had to close the doors because we didn’t get the sum of money we asked for,” Dr Lewins said. “We asked for $300,000 to be able to stay open. The $100,000 wasn’t enough.” Despite setbacks and a lack of funding, Dr Lewins said the board was committed to building a new facility for local residents that would qualify as a private hospital. “Once you are credited (as a private hospital) you are eligible for government funding, and it’s that additional funding we haven’t been able to raise through our own fundraising,” he said. Dr Lewins said the board was also

IT’S 4.30pm, Friday 26 May 2013, and a small group of people are crowding into the training room of the Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving Club. Among those in attendance are two people, husband and wife team, who have travelled all the way from Pambula Surf Life Saving Club in NSW. The reason for the meeting and the attendance of special guests, Peter and Michele Boots, was to explain the purpose, goals and program of this group. Known as the Noosa Seahorse Nippers, and under the control of organisers Steve and Nikki Mawby of the Noosa club, their purpose was to give children with special needs the opportunity to take part in activities, which under normal circumstances, would be beyond their capabilities. Last Saturday, 30 April 2016 at noon a group of delegates from Victoria, NSW and Queensland attended what we can proudly say, was the first think tank instigated by the Noosa club for the purpose of consolidating and planning the future of this great organisation, currently known as the Seahorse Nippers. Prior to this, the Noosa Seahorse club conducted their normal Saturday morning activities which got underway at 9am. Visiting delegates were invited to observe, meet helpers and participate in the program. Visitors were given a demonstration by Donald McKill of a new game, the obstacle course. This course set up on the sand has three disciplines the purpose of which is to create a feeling of first running through pot holes, second of going out through waves and finally diving under big surf. As this was the last session for this season, a presentation of awards was made at the completion of the program by patron Dawn Fraser, and many photos were snapped. This occasion was a good chance to give delegates an opportunity to see how successful and advanced the Noosa club has become; and for Peter and Michael Boots the seminar was of utmost importance. “For us, it takes quite a journey to get here, but we wouldn’t have missed it for the world,” Peter said. Their journey started with a fourhour car trip from their home in Merimbula to Nowra, followed by a three-hour train trip to Sydney; then a connecting flight from Sydney to Maroochydore. At the airport they were greeted by the Mawbys who were to be their host family during their stay. “Since that first meeting three years ago, the people of Noosa have achieved wonders,” Michele said. "To be here is our pleasure. For Peter and I our dream is to see this type of program spread right throughout Australia; now it is starting to happen.” Another delegate to support this was Naomi Symington. Naomi, who travelled from the Anglesea Club in Victoria said, “Our hope is to see this type of program spread into every club in Australia.” But perhaps one of the most supportive remarks came from a delegate from outside Surf

Catherine who was representing the Government Office of Sport, and Sport Recreation for NSW said, “What has been achieved here has given lots of scope to progress through all other clubs, and to develop a common partnership. Well done to all.” Following this the delegates, 45 in all, assembled in the Noosa Board Room and under facilitator Tim Mackew the first ever think tank was called to order. In his opening remarks, Tim drew attention to the “importance of specialising in upgrading the calibre of your team and the loyalty of your best talent.” Before starting on the agenda, he invited Dawn Fraser Noosa Seahorse patron to speak. In her remarks, Dawn said, “I have been involved with another (similar) Australian group, so I understand what it is all about; and to see the smile on those kids’ faces when they come out of the water, even when it’s cold, makes it all worthwhile. I wish you all the very best.” Mackew’s opening remarks were of the utmost importance. When we take into consideration that we now have 20 clubs in NSW, three in South Australia, six in Victoria, seven in Queensland, plus Victoria and Queensland also having a further one and three respectively being formed, “the loyalty of the teams is absolutely imperative.” Regarding outcomes, listed on the agenda, one in particular was to establish an online network to provide support, resources and assistance to other clubs across Australia; and to implement a Special Needs Nipper or Surf Awareness program at their surf life saving clubs. Other club delegates were invited to make a short presentation regarding the situation in their clubs; and some of the presentations were as follows: Redcliffe delegate said, “We have been going three years, and have just completed our fifth program with about 15 nippers in attendance. We are working hard toward the retention of helpers.” North Burleigh spoke of
having completed two seasons with members being aged 5-13 years, and having among their nippers three that are in wheelchairs. From Alexander Headlands, we were informed that they now have 36 Seahorse Nippers attending their programs. However, for them the highlight has been the fact that patrolling senior members have taken it upon themselves to invite the Seahorse Nippers to visit their patrols, and the response has been incredible. This is because we have members from five45; half of our group is young adults.” Representing the Anglesea club Naomi Symington said, “We call our group the Starfish Nippers. We started five years ago and are now working with 15 members. We have our program the same time as our other nippers and we join with them in such events as wading and beach relays. We have great support from our Life Member group and work hard to promote family values within the club” However, working with special nippers is not her only major achievement; she made history by becoming Anglesea's first lady president. “All my life has been devoted to surf lifesaving.” At present Naomi holds the position of Director of Youth Activities. After the delegates spoke and various points discussed, the facilitator introduced the keynote speaker Michael Scanlon. Points he highlighted included: remember all children are different, the importance of visualisation in teaching, and above all teach them to help themselves. Following this, delegates were broken up into workshops, after which spokespersons highlighted points considered important in the consolidating and planning for the future. These were: pathways and personal development, engaging state and national bodies, retention of volunteers from both within and outside our clubs, funding and education of our helpers. Perhaps, one of the most important was the adoption of a new name. This has come about because a lot of clubs are now embracing older members, and the name nipper is no longer appropriate. It would also serve to bring all involved under the one banner. This would be a positive in marketing the organisation. To close off the afternoon John Dokon of the Noosa Club was invited to speak on what the lifesaving movement, and in particular the Seahorse nippers meant to him and his family. In what was sometimes an emotional address, this former veteran of 16 years naval service, which included service in the Middle East, explained how, along with his wife and two sons there was indeed a role for each member of his family in the Noosa club. For this he would be forever grateful. He needed help and it was there for the asking. At the conclusion of the day, it was obvious to all that the timing for the think tank was perfect; spot on. The work done by the Noosa Seahorse team and their group of supporters was second to none. Now the time is right to take it to the next level of being nationwide; consolidate, plan and move on. Bridge opens for 100 years of traffic THE final touches have been added to a new $1.9 million bridge in Eumundi with Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson joining local councillors and community representatives for the official opening on Thursday 28 April. Mayor Mark Jamieson said the concrete bridge replaced a failing timber bridge and improved the safety of motorists and pedestrians. “This new bridge, which has an estimated life span of 100 years, is almost six metres wider, with two 3.5m traffic lanes, 1.2m road shoulders and a two metre pedestrian walkway on the eastern side,” he said.
“When our old timber bridges reach a point where they can’t be maintained in a cost-effective way, it’s important we upgrade them to high quality concrete structures. “This is major investment for Eumundi to improve a well-used travel route and safety which I’m sure will be appreciated by the residents and the thousands of visitors to the town.” Division 10 councillor Greg Rogerson said the council had worked closely with community representatives to include a feature balustrade and nearby shelter. “The orange feature balustrade, de-
signed in consultation with community representatives, are unique to Eumundi and add local character to the bridge,” Cr Rogerson said. “Both the distinct orange colour and the shape of the balustrade represents the Scarlett Bracket fungi which is found in Eumundi – the way the railings overhand the bridge mimic the way fungus grows along a fallen tree in the bush. “Council has also constructed a welcome statement nearby using recycled bridge timbers and a shelter to provide a rest area for people who walk along Eumundi Range Road.”
THE recent death of a bat and a public health warning has caused community members to fear disease from the resident bats of Wallace Park. Outspoken advocate for Wallace Park residents Kay Fielden wants answers from the council about the recent confirmed death of an infected bat found at Wallace Park. “We had to bury a dead bat that had been lying on the ground for days,” Ms Fielden said. “Council was notified twice that it was lying on the ground at Wallace Park, its position was clearly stated and it is about the third dead bat that we have requested council to remove. “They have taken as long as a week to act and in the meantime nearby residents have had to warn others to not touch and to keep dogs and children which frequent the area away.” Ms Fielden said Noosa Council was “spreading the wrong information” in regards to the bats and the viruses they can spread. “Noosa Council denies that bats can be harmful, especially in the plague proportions that Noosa has now. Noosa Council denies that the bats destroy the natural forest, when if they came and saw the devastation done by bats to
Wallace Park they may think otherwise,” Ms Fielden said. Noosa Council principal environment officer Peter Milne said although the bats can carry viruses, the likelihood of human infection was low. “Queensland Health advises that flying-foxes, like most animals, can carry transmissible viruses. “A small percentage of flyingfoxes carry Australian bat lyssavirus (ABLV) and Hendra virus,” Mr Milne said. “Hendra virus can only be transmitted to humans via a host animal such as a horse. Infection from Lyssavirus can only be transmitted by bites or scratches from bats and it is extremely rare. “There are only three documented cases of ABLV. To avoid ABLV do not handle bats. If you are bitten or scratched by a bat, seek medical attention immediately.” The council reminds anyone who finds a sick or injured bat not to handle the animal but to contact the RSPCA on 1300 ANIMAL (264625) or a local bat care organisation. Don’t let message go to waste THE message is clear from the Noosa community – more public education, better recycling services and increased landfill diversion. Residents and businesses have spoken out about the waste management services they would like to see from the council in the Noosa Community Biosphere Association’s (NCBA) recent survey on waste management.
NCBA sought feedback from residents and business owners from coastal and hinterland towns and conducted audits at several locations throughout Noosa Shire last month. NCBA vice president John Wood said survey results showed residents want flexible kerbside collection and improved recycling services. “Whilst basic kerbside waste services were largely adequate, there
were pockets where no recycling collection is available to residents and businesses,” Mr Wood said. “Many residents want council to go beyond kerbside general waste and recycling collections to include organic waste and others want council to provide more education and workshops that help residents reduce organic waste.” Mr Wood also said survey respon-
dents showed support for a container deposit scheme and additional public recycling bins and was pleased to announce the progress on these issues. “NCBA is happy to announce that council is trailing a single-pass collection for Hastings Street and installing public place recycling bins,” Mr Wood said. “This truck is capable of general waste and recycling collections.”
The results of the survey have been collated and included in the NCBA’s 19-page submission to the Noosa Council. Mr Wood said the submission highlights the findings and recommendations from independent audits and surveys undertaken last month as well as previous council audits and the Community Jury’s recommendations.

Curtis, the inspiration behind Sunshine Butterflies, celebrated his birthday on Saturday 30 April at the Sunshine Butterflies’ five-acre hobby farm. Sunshine Butterflies founder Leanne Walsh said her passion and dedication towards disability education, awareness and inclusion began with her husband Damien when their son Curtis was born 13 weeks premature with cerebral palsy. “Having a child with a disability is a lifelong thing. It doesn’t go away when they turn a certain age or leave school. “Support needs to be effective and ongoing, catering for individual circumstances,” Leanne said. Leanne’s desire to make her community an inclusive and accepting place has come from her own journey and experiences, all of which have led her to develop and create a successful one stop shop concept, charity and service.

Empowering women By MEGAN OGLE A LOCAL martial artist is dishing out tough love to the women and children of South Africa and wants you to help. Tammy Kelly is on a mission to improve the lives of women living in fear every day by providing free self-defence classes for women and children in South African communities. “I recently ran a self-defence course in South Africa two weeks ago, and over 200 women and children attended,” Ms Kelly said.
“Of those 200, multiple rape and domestic violence survivors shared their stories with me.” Ms Kelly, originally from South Africa, now calls Noosa home and is running local selfdefence courses for women and children over the age of 10 in a bid to raise funds for her Tough Love program. “It is essentially a social enterprise where the women who train with me in Noosa fund the courses which I and my qualified team run in impoverished areas of South Africa.”
The Noosa program teaches participants the physical and mental techniques of self-defence as well as having a fitness element with part of the fee funding the free program in South Africa. Ms Kelly offers month-long programs as well as flexible team building programs. “If 12 women attend one monthly program here in Noosa, then that funds one class in South Africa,” Ms Kelly said. “The first program starts Friday 6 May, with classes each Friday between 4pm and 5pm.
“The next program is in July with classes each Tuesday from 6pm to 7pm.” Ms Kelly is a highly qualified self-defence coach and has trained in martial arts for over 30 years. Ms Kelly also competed in the South African karate national team for over 10 years, and said this was her way of giving back to the community. The not-for-profit guardians of the waterways are calling on the community to help spot trouble at sea by forming a community watch group of “spotters”. Noosa Coastguard Commander Alan Hall said the organisation previously had “spotters” along Sunshine and Peregian who could be called on if there was trouble afloat but said more volunteers were needed. “If there was a problem reported, a flare sighting or something similar, we could call on the spotters, the residents with a view of the ocean, and ask what they could see from their balconies,” Cdr Hall said. “These people could save lives or a boat in distress or could save us from dispatching a boat if it was a false alarm. We’ve found that the residents can often see what’s going on even if they aren’t looking. “If anyone is prepared to help out and become a spotter we would love to hear from them.” To find out more information or to nominate yourself to be a spotter call Cdr Hall on 0414 957 427.

Council unplugged IN RESPONSE to Plug The Flood (Noosa Today, 14 April). What Adam Britton, project manager Noosa Council, failed to say in the article is that this is not just about our property but also a large number of other properties that are affected by the flooding problem at Lake MacDonald Estate. He also failed to mention that the residents of Lake MacDonald Estate sent a petition off to Noel Playford requesting a meeting with him and his staff to discuss the flooding issue. Mr Playford passed it onto Mr Britton to handle. He declined to meet with us. What we need from Tony Wellington and Noosa Council is a firm time frame on when it will be fixed. Rebecca Britton, principal strategic planner at Noosa Council, told us that even if this matter went before a budget committee at the end of the year, it would be another three to five years before something is done. We have supplied photos and information over the past five years, what more do they need? Do our homes need to be flooded or does someone need to be killed before Noosa Council finally takes the flooding issue seriously. It’s about time council stopped talking and finally did something. Be careful how you wave to someone as you could be giving away $100 and an handshake could cost you a fortune. Every toilet will have to have a bidet as you could be literally wiping away a fortune. Learn the lesson OUR empty TAFE facility is in danger of leaving government hands if our state member Glen Elmes has a say in the matter. He wants Noosa Council to buy the facility. While local councils can help to create the environment for educators to relocate to their regions, they are not in the business of taking over state assets in what should be a government responsibility. The current LNP federal government has given $4.5 billion of taxpayer money to private vocational training companies for them to loan to their students. The ABC has revealed that many students do not have the ability to complete their courses or the courses themselves fall far short of the standard required to fit the student for a useful vocation. This abdication of government responsibility to the private sector has been a disgraceful failure, leaving us with a skills shortage that we have been importing 457 visa holders to fill. And this at a time when we have record youth unemployment. If the State Government were to sell this facility to the council then it too would be open to use by private operators to pay for its upkeep. What our unemployed youth need is a low, or no fee, government-run TAFE facility that will train them with the skills needed to serve our community and to make them employable to local businesses. Government is about serving the community, not channelling government money into the hands of private operators who are not subject to the same level of scrutiny in the services that they provide. Gathering in such great numbers, keeping the Anzac spirit alive, young and old, together to remember and never forget those we lost. We would like to thank the local schools and school students who marched in the main parade on Anzac Day 2016. A special thank you to the school students who showed their respect to the veterans by placing their hands over their hearts and bowing their heads. THE Cooroy Fusion Festival is set to kick off for the sixth year running and is said to be even bigger and better than before. The festival, which started as a celebration for the opening of the Cooroy Library in 2010, has certainly come a long way in the six years it has been running and now attracts more than 10,000 people each year. Mentors give entrepreneurs an edge NOOSA Toastmasters is about more than public speaking as mentors give entrepreneurs a step in the right direction. Toastmasters’ member and business strategist Katina Cuba said she had been able to build confidence and learn valuable skills since joining the club in February last year. “I am a business strategist who helps entrepreneurs to maximise profitability and impact in their businesses. I felt the need to improve my speaking to be able to expand my business and take it to a level where I can serve more people, through workshops, webinars and public speaking,” Ms Cuba said. “My decision to join the club was almost instant after my first meeting as a guest; I felt extremely welcomed and was impressed with the encouragement and professionalism from all the members.” Toastmasters vice-president Kate Gardiner said the club also focused on relationship building and leadership skills.

A look in keeping with the landscape LOCAL architect David Teeland has been awarded a Regional Commendation for the Little Cove Sunday House at the 2016 Australian Institute of Architects Sunshine Coast Architecture Awards, presented on Friday 22 April at a ceremony at the Sunfair Beach Hotel in Marcoola. The Sunshine Coast awards acknowledge excellence in architecture and design in the region. From 16 entries, 10 projects were recognised with regional commendations. 2016 Queensland Awards jury director Michael Leary said these projects showed “high levels of climatic and cultural sensitivities“ specific to their location. “Projects do reference the style the region is known for, however we are also
seeing new ideas and new forms that add to discussions about what makes an architecture that belongs to the Sunshine Coast.’ Teeland Architects will now progress to the coveted Queensland Architecture Awards to be announced in Brisbane on 24 June. It was an exciting week for Teeland Architects. On the same day as receiving an award from the Australian Institute of Architects for the Sunday House, they were notified that their Stealth House in the Sunshine Coast hinterland had been shortlisted for the prestigious 2016 Houses Awards. The awards will be presented in Sydney at Doltone House, Hyde Park on Friday 22 July.

Screaming Jets to rock town By MEGAN OGLE AFTER eight long years, loyal fans can rejoice as a wave of chrome hits Noosa for one night only. Chrome, the long-awaited album by much-loved Aussie rockers The Screaming Jets, is due to hit the stands on 6 May, and to celebrate, the famous five-piece band is touring a
few select venues to give fans a show they won’t forget. Bass guitarist Paul Woseen said the latest album was inspired by an array of situations and his general observations of the planet, and fans could hear the new tracks as well as all the classics at the coming Noosa gig. “We’ve played some of the new
tracks while we toured last year, just to test them out, and the crowd loved them,” Paul said. The current formation of The Screaming Jets, who have been together for the past eight years, include founding members Dave Gleeson and Paul, who have been with the band for over 27 years. “As a band we’ve really evolved, we
have the same attitude from when we first started, but the band is what it’s always meant to be.” Not only did 2013 see the Jets back out on the road, playing to sold-out venues across the country on their Real Deal tour, it also marked the release of Paul’s debut Solo Album Bombido. “I’ve toured with the solo album

PUBLIC health experts have warned that Queenslanders who drink a can of soft drink per day could gain nearly seven kilograms in one year, worsening the state’s obesity crisis. Evidence suggests that consuming one can of 340ml soft drink per day could lead to a 6.75kg weight gain in one year, if calories are not offset by exercise or a reduction in overall energy intake. Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift has called on health authorities and the community to work together to limit the consumption of sugar-sweetened drinks. “One 600ml bottle of a soft drink, sports drink, or energy drink contains up to 16 teaspoons of sugar and over 250 calories or 1000 kilojoules,” Ms Clift said. “Unfortunately not enough Queenslanders offset these calories with adequate exercise, resulting in overweight and obesity.” Strategies recommended by the Cancer Council include a ban on soft drink vending machines and marketing of soft drinks to children. “The World Health Organisation recommends limiting sugar consumption from both food and drinks to no more

Retirees after happiness RETIREMENT ought to be a happy time. You can set your own schedule, take long vacations, and start spending all the money you’ve been saving. And for many retirees that holds true. In a recent survey of 1400 retirees, it was found 48 per cent of respondents reported being happier in retirement than expected; only seven per cent were disappointed. How can you make sure you follow this blissful pattern? Financial security helps. And good health is crucial: 81 per cent of retirees cited it as the most important ingredient for a happy retirement. Some of the other triggers are less obvious. Here’s what you can do to make your retirement a happy one. Create a predictable paycheck. No doubt about it: more money makes you happier. A recent survey found the happiest retirees had a predictable income; a pension, say, or rental properties. The same survey found that retirees who rely mostly on investments had the highest financial anxiety. Almost a third of retirees who get less than 25 per cent of their income from a pension or annuity were worried about their financial future; of those who receive 50 per cent or more of their income from

People who work past 65 are happier than their fully retired peers, with a big asterisk. If you have no choice but to

piness a 6.5 on average; that drops to 4.4 for those who are forced to take a part-time job. The benefit of working
isn’t just financial. It’s also a boon to your health; a key driver of retirement happiness. The physical activity and social connections a job provides are a good antidote to an unhealthy sedentary and lonely lifestyle. A 2009 study published in the Journal of Occupational Health Psychology found that retirees with part-time or temporary jobs have fewer major diseases, including high blood pressure and heart disease, than those who stop working altogether, even after factoring in their pre-retirement health. Find four hobbies. Busy retirees tend to be happier. But just how active do you have to be? The same survey found that the happiest retirees engage in three to four activities regularly; the least happy, only one or two. For the biggest boost to your happiness, pick a hobby that’s social. The top pursuits of the happiest retirees include volunteering, travel, and golf; for the unhappiest, they’re reading, hunting, fishing, and writing. That’s no surprise when you consider that people 65 and older get far more enjoyment out of socialising than younger people do.

ANOTHER summer season for our three beaches Main Beach Noosa, Sunshine Beach and Peregian has been completed and proud to relate once again, “No Lives Lost,” while lifesavers were on patrol. However, there has been an increase in accidents on some beach areas, but stats reveal they have occurred away from the flags. If only more people would talk to the lifesavers in the red and yellow and ask questions; talking to our beach goers is part of the job of being a patrolman. One thing that is of concern is the increase in spinal injuries. However, again this factor could be reduced if swimmers were to seek advice when they see the surf is up; and remember the golden rule – It does not have to be big to be dangerous. On the weekend, the Noosa club played host to the first ever Think Tank seminar to be held in support of the Seahorse Nippers. Happy to relate it was a total success and all intentions are to go again in 12 months. With delegates attending from Victoria and NSW, a strong support group was required to ensure a successful outcome was achieved. As always there is a big workload performed behind the scenes. Big Peter Williams and his mates

Picture: CONTRIBUTED covered the parking problems and to back up the administration team, Lorna Garden, Donald McKill, Craig Moore, the Lansdown family, Rob and Lucia Neely, Little Joe, Jose-Pablo Aguirre and Zoe Stuart just to mention a few, gave their all. The staff of the Surf Club under Anton Mogg was as always very attentive. Also let’s not forget to thank those young clubbies who worked as helpers with the Seahorse Nippers during their season. The importance of these people cannot be stressed enough. When delegates from interstate visit Noosa regardless of their purpose or organisation, the role played by these work forces is what makes their stay one to remember. Or as two lady delegates said on leaving, “Thank you Noosa for your hospitality.” It reflects on the whole town.
At the recent National Titles, it was good to see Sunshine Beach and Noosa supporting one of our traditional events, the Belt Race. In recent times, there has been a tendency to forget traditions, so to have belt swimmers in both our clubs is a matter of pride; so to these swimmers and coaches a very sincere thank you; with tradition comes pride. Another well done must surely go to those young clubbies who contested the Champion Patrol and Champion Lifesaver events. Despite the fact that these get little or no recognition, these events are, and always will be, what lifesaving is all about. Proud to say that in these events Sunshine Beach is definitely one of the best in Australia, and Noosa, who has just made a start in this area, has definitely gained respect from officials. What is truly a major positive
is the fact that this season there has been an increase in training courses in which Noosa and Sunshine have joined together to train as one unit. To all those members of the training team thank you for a job well done. Also the training between Noosa and Peregian has been in the words of Brett Leckie of Peregian, “All very positive. We are keeping our presence ongoing, and this has been great for the community.” The Surf Awareness programs being introduced into our schools by Noosa’s education manager Greg McLaughlin and his team continues to go from strength to strength. With busloads of students arriving from as far away as Brisbane and Gympie, the future of lifesaving in Queensland looks better every year. Well done to all – a very successful and positive season.

Rain a pain for busy anglers By JACK MANGROVE ON the river the rain was also a bit of a pain – more from a comfort point of view – but the fishing was red hot The lower reaches of the river has been where most of the action has been with the river mouth one of the hot spots for land-based anglers. There have been some good mixed schools of trevally, and tailor moving in on the incoming tide – fast moving Micro gigs and slugs cast out with a fast retrieve have worked well when the fish are thick. Small pilchards have also produced some nice fish. There has also been some really good quality bream taken on fresh mullet strips, with the odd jew and jack on soft vibes like the Fuze Pulse and Fish Candy vibes. In the Frying Pan, heaps of whiting and bream on live worms. Sur-
face lures have also producing some good fish on the run out tide. Woods Bays has seen mixed schools of trevally. Soft plastics have been producing the goods with the Squidgy Prawns, Keiteck Easy Shiners and Fuze prawn heads all coming up with the goods. A few good size tailor being caught, surface poppers and surface walkers have been working well early morning and late afternoons. Up on the ski runs, the water is a little murky after the rain so darker soft plastics will be the go. The stretch between Harbor Town and the ski run has produced a mixed bag including trevally, bream, jacks and the odd tailor. With the promise of better conditions last weekend, offshore anglers where gearing up for a big weekend. You didn’t have to go far to get into some quality fish with mixed spe-
cies of tuna being caught throughout Laguna Bay - throwing small metal slugs and using lightly weighted smaller soft plastics saw some great results. Local reefs like Sunshine Reef, Halls Reef and North Reef have been producing good numbers of reef fish like snapper, pearl perch, tusk fish, trout on pilchard floaters, livies and dropper rigs. Mackeral have been caught around North Reef, Chardon’s Reef trolling hard body lures like the Samaki Pace Makers and Rapala Magiums. Out on the Banks there are good quality snapper over the 4kg mark taken on squid and large pilchards fished hard to the bottom. On the beach, last Saturday and part of Sunday was a bit painful with the rain, but for the public holiday Monday the heavens cleared and beach anglers were out in force.

When good mates battle it out Touch footy thrillers THE Noosa Dolphins dived into a wet game this weekend, proving they can swim in even the most shallow of waters. The training paid off for the U7 Noosa Fins who came out on top this weekend, defeating Caloundra 35 to15. The boys took note and were rewarded for their efforts with a convincing win. It was Noosa versus Noosa for the U8s with The Reds coming out on top of the Fins by five points with an end score of 50 to 45. Both teams fought gallantly to gain ascendancy in a ding-dong battle of big hits and barnstorming bursts of speed as the local derby had the generous crowd holding their breath with nervous excitement. In the end, a brilliant offload that setup a crucial try was all that separated the two teams. The tensions were high in the U9 Noosa versus Grammar game, with the teams drawing an even four. The last few minutes proving to be the most intense as Eden, Mackie and Max sent Kane over for a screamer right on the whistle. U10 Fins came out on

top against fellow Noosa Blacks with a win of 38 to 15. A fantastic win to the Fins against the equally determined Noosa Black under lights at home in front of an allied crowd. It’s always a tough battle when two Noosa teams play each other - mate against mate - the close game between U11 Noosa Fins and
Noosa Reds saw the Fins come out on top by one point, winning 25 to 24. The Noosa U12 Fins returned after a week off, looking fresh and ready for action. Rivals brothers put up a good fight throughout the match, but the Fins had too much for them and notched up eight tries to take maximum points and
put their season back on track. And the U13 Noosa Dolphins finished off the winning streak taking out top spot against Maroochydore 39 points to twelve. Domino’s pizza player of the match awards: Kase Dowd, Charlie Harmer, Ronan Nagle, Louie Griffin, Soren Manssen and Jai Gleeson.

THE rain clouds held off long enough last Wednesday for the junior games of touch footy to be played in relatively dry conditions. The U10 girls match between Ice Angels and Fireballs started the afternoon’s proceedings with a nail-biter, just one touchdown separating the teams at fulltime. Jasmine, Jacinta and Erin all played strongly. Running Rebels and Tornadoes both showed their attacking abilities in their match, with the Rebels just managing to hold on to a narrow win this time around with Huntah, Zahlee and Ben giving strong performances. The game between GSLC and Lava Boys also turned into a thriller with the score deadlocked when the siren sounded. Archie, William and Brandon all looked sharp for their teams. First up in the U12 division saw Speed Demons against GSLC (boys). Although the GSLC boys never gave up, the defensive display by the Demons was just too strong on the day with Curtis, Zac and Liam leading the way. Knights had a hard-fought win over with Sunshine Beach Boys with a couple of late touchdowns proving the difference. Levi, Ben and Cade had great games. SBSS (girls) took the points against Angels with Attitude with Paige, Parker and Jessica all producing

Even with a stronger showing in the second half from GSLC (girls) the Foxy Rebels held on in a great match. Mia, Iluka and Summer had terrific games. In the U14/16 division, GSLC (girls) proved too strong for Feisty Chicks with Emily, Ruby and Zoe all putting in mighty efforts. It was always going to be a tough challenge for the new combination of the Noosa Chicks last week up against a SBSS outfit that took every opportunity in their win. Georgia, Jacqueline and Tenay all played well. Hairy Man came out on top in their encounter with GSLC (boys) with Jack, Tamatoa and Jacob having awesome games. Although trailing at half time, the NDSHS (boys) made a secondhalf comeback and were in front by a couple of touchdowns at the final whistle with James and Noah standing tall for their respective teams. Big wins for Noosa Junior Pirates coln Knight who was awarded man of the match for his ‘never say die’ desperation in defence, saving tries running down players from behind. Under 11 Blue played the best first half of their season with hard running from forwards Jake, Kaleb, Liam, Arlo, Riley, Kai and Levi. The Under 11 Yellow boys showed a gutsy win over a very hard running and hitting Nambour. In wet conditions, the lads rucked it up hard with a few nice plays which was orchestrated by fill in half Jackson Smith. The Under 12 Girls played hard at a gala day in Caloundra on the same
day, starting their season off on the right foot while the Under 14 Girls toughed it out in the wet and slippery conditions over the weekend. After a bumpy start, the Under 16 Girls worked as a team and made rivals Beachmere earn their points. The Girls scored each half and showed great sportsmanship. It would appear the Under 18 Girls decided to give the Beachmere team a head start, but played hard in the second half gaining 22 points to Beachmere’s 18. However, the overall points were in Beachmere’s favour with the rival team coming out on top, 60 to 22.

FOR quite a few years now I’ve enjoyed competing in the Noosa Malibu Club’s Wrecks and Relics contest for the over 50s, partly because no one takes it too seriously and partly because in June it’s often blessed with offshore winds and sparkling beaches. But until last weekend I hadn’t caught up with the Mal Club’s logger comp because we always seem to be away at this time of year. Now in its third year, the logger is along similar lines to the Wrecks, a mostly local and regional competitor base, a couple of tents on the beach, peer judging and plenty of beers later on. No frills but plenty of fun, and a surprisingly high performance level, particularly in the open and junior divisions. With a frantically busy weekend ahead of me before we take off again, I hadn’t intended to compete, but on Saturday morning I rode my pushie down to First Point to watch a couple of heats and someone else’s misfortune turned into my good luck. “You want a start?” yelled beach marshall Scotty Ford. “Grab a board and a green rashie and paddle out now.” I took one look at the perfect glassy little sets rolling through and didn’t need to be asked twice. Sunday morning’s rain put a bit of a dampener on proceedings, but not for long, with plenty of action in the water as the squalls passed, the onshore wind backed off and there were some fun waves for most of the finals. Special mention here to former world champion Josh Constable, now well into middle age but showing no signs of slowing down in taking out his third open logger title on the trot. A high performance longboarder when he took out his world title a decade ago, Josh has made the transition to traditional styling almost seamlessly. I remember judging him in the final of the Deus Nine Foot and Single event (another fun logger comp) in Bali a couple of years ago when he surfed beautifully and would have beaten Harrison Roach if he hadn’t kept bashing the lip in the shorebreak closeout. No lip-bashing on a logger now. Josh is as smooth as silk from take-off to exit. Another surfer who looks smoother every time I see him is junior boys’ winner Tom Morat, whose backside styling at First Point is reminiscent of Joel Tudor, one of his idols. I look forward to surfing with both these guys, as well as old mal winner Matt Cuddihy and a whole tribe of other Noosa locals in Bali in a couple of weeks.
BALSA BOYS OF DEE WHY Another local surfer who distinguished himself last weekend was Peregian’s Glenn “Marto” Martin, who pipped me for second place in the over 60s, despite the fact that he’s got five years on both me and division winner Eric “Grey Ghost” Walker, and that he’s coming back from a very recent hip replacement. Of course, none of us can ever get past Eric, by far the best over 60 longboarder in the country, but Marto gave it a red hot go. Marto was also the only surfer in the comp who dates back to the era of true logging, when balsa surfboards had just come on the scene. To prove it he pulled out this classic group shot from Dee Why in the summer of 1959 when he was just 13. That’s Marto on the far right, sporting trendy below the knee “okanui” boardies, as is Vince Spain in the foreground. The alternative to wearing okanuis was the tried and true Speedo budgie smuggler, worn by the late Chris Crozier on the far left. Chris went on to become a leading surfboard manufacturer before being killed in a road accident. Also worthy of note is the dead flat balsa

RITES OF PASSAGE Times they are a changing in our family, with youngest grandson Hamie celebrating attaining the grand old age of five – where did those years go, and what happened to our little Piggie! – and my mum at 93 preparing to leave the building. Hamie had a hell of a Star Wars birthday bash by the river, with lots of blue birthday cake and even a surprise visit from Chewbacca. The showers stayed away, pretty much, and there were plenty of fun games, my favourite being bashing the crap out of the Death Star. While it’s much more fun celebrating a life that is just beginning than it is one that is ending, and I know there will be a few tears in the days ahead, Mum has effectively been dead to my siblings and me for several years now, thanks to the dreadful scourge of dementia. It will be a blessing for all to see her finally go to her rest after a life well-lived. And if the poor old dear could still raise her wine glass, she would certainly drink to that.

Luke at softball pinnacle A LOCAL 19-year-old is set to take on the world as he prepares to represent Australia as a member of the Australian Junior Steelers Men's softball team. Luke Thomas has been selected to represent Australia at the Junior Men's Worlds Championships in Midland, Michigan, USA, in July. Luke’s mum Sue Thomas said this was the highest level of achievement for a young man of Luke’s age in not only Australia, but the world. “The competition has 13 teams from every continent attending, playing to become number one in the world and take home the gold medal,” Ms Thomas said. “As men’s softball is not

an Olympic sport, this is its equivalent, there is no higher achievement.” Luke juggles a full-time apprenticeship and a gruelling six-day-a-week training program, but it’s paid off as Luke has been able to realise his goal of joining the Australian team. Something Ms Thomas says Luke has been working towards for the past four years. “Since he started his apprenticeship two years ago, he has only ever used his annual leave to compete at tournaments, never actually had a holiday,” Ms Thomas said. “He has been representing Queensland in state teams for the last three years. He has been playing softball since he was nine years old.”
Medals for Noosa Masters NOOSA Masters Swimming Club returned home winners after competing at the Australian Masters long course swimming championships held at the Melbourne Aquatic Centre last month. The four-day competition, held from 21 to 24 April saw 725 competitors representing 125 master clubs from across Australia. Noosa Master Swimming Club saw
many personal best times with an overall place of 11th for the female swimmers with 268 points and 26th for the male swimmers with 128 points. Four relay teams were successful, bringing home two silvers and two bronze. Viv Merrill, Robyn Selby, Lois Hill and Jan Croft took out the silver medal in the women’s 50m freestyle relay.

Atticus adorned with awards NINE-YEAR-OLD Atticus Richter swapped his Dolphins jersey for a Kiwi bird as he headed to the land of the long white cloud for a chance to play with the best. The Noosa Dolphin’s rugby player headed to Remuera, New Zealand, over the Anzac Day weekend to attend the College Rifles Junior Rugby Union Camp.
