Economy is shipshape WHEN the chief economist of CommSec visited the Border last week, his general message was that the Australian economy was in “really good shape - hear what else he had to say about the opportunities that lie ahead for Australia. FULL DETAILS, PAGE 3
Innovation budget By MONIQUE KUZEFF WITH less than a week to go before the federal budget is unveiled, Federal Treasurer Scott Morrison visited the Border, taking some time out of his busy schedule to address the community on the government’s financial agenda and the effect of federal policies on local businesses. Wodonga Mayor Anna Speedie, Liberal Canditate for Indi Sophie Mirabella and Member for Benambra Bill Tilley were among the guests at the Wodonga Chamber of Commerce event. Although not outing any major details of the upcoming budget, Mr Morrison shared an overview of the budget and allocated time to answer questions on a range of topics such as superannuation, policy and debt. Mr Morrison said the budget would set out some important objectives that set priorities, ensuring government expenditure was under control and was affordable. “We have a plan for the future that will support investment to promote economic growth that will create more and better paying jobs, Mr Morrison said. “We need to have a tax system that is better targeted to reward effort and supports investments that drive jobs and growth. “We need to ensure that we continue on our strong path to budget balance by getting our expenditure under control and ensuring we are continuing to grow the economy that will continue to lift revenues. “Our plan is to control spending, drive jobs and drive growth. Mr Morrison said innovation was important if Australia was to move towards a successful society and economy. “Being more innovative is absolutely critical to what we need to do to be successful as an economy and as a

When questioned about superannuation, Mr Morrison said government had not made changes, preferring to maintain some stability in that system. “Over the last six months we have responded to the Financial System Inquiry that said we need to introduce a law that defines the purpose of superannuation. “The reason we provide tax in-
“To balance the budget you’ve got to get your expenditure under control, he said. Mr Morrison warned there was great global uncertainty and volatility, and maintaining a successfully transitioning economy was currently the most critical economic and national challenge. “We have to make sure that we can live within our means, because the
centive to support savings going into superannuation is to reduce the likelihood of a person’s dependence on a pension. “So we are structuring our super arrangements, and any changes we may make, around that specific purpose. On the topic of the deficit and debt problem Australia was currently facing, Mr Morrison said there were $13 billion in savings for budget repair.
alternative is just unacceptable, Mr Morrison said. “It is entirely necessary that we don’t make unaffordable commitments with money that isn’t there, that we don’t promise that certain outcomes can be delivered that the money isn’t there for. “It’s important that we are honest to the Australian people about these things - about what we can do and what we cannot afford.

Alert to signs of struggle By MONIQUE KUZEFF

Jobs skills that work By MONIQUE KUZEFF UNEMPLOYED persons across the Border now have access to a vocational pathway program that aims to hone their skills and help them towards a future occupational outcome. Federal Treasurer Scott Morrison launched the pathways program, 2 Cool 4 School (2C4S), at Albury Wodonga Community College last Friday during his visit to the Wodonga. 2C4S, established in 2012, works specifically with youth and adults who are unemployed, vulnerable and at risk. It provides individualised re-engagement opportunity to those who are going through difficult life challenges or who have previously struggled with education and training. Albury Wodonga Community College CEO Rodney Wangman said the program has so far been very successful in achieving it goals. “It’s been very successful in helping people who are struggling with educational learning by allowing them to work one-on-one with a coach to progres-
encouragement and learning life skills,” Mr Morrison said. “I can’t think of anything that I get more satisfaction out of and more energised from then when we can see jobs created for young people. “I’d like for every young person wherever they live to gain the support, encouragement and skills to be shown the way to get out there and have a crack.” Mr Morrison said the government was keen and committed to supporting programs and services that help people gain employment. “This is one of the most important things our communities can do that our young people get the chance to have a life where they’re in control,” he said. 2C4S is currently accessible in Albury, Wodonga, Wangaratta, Shepparton, Mildura and Melbourne and has attracted learners through both word of mouth and welfare employment agencies. sively work back into small groups and classroom environments,” Mr Wangman said. “It’s strong in terms of literacy and numeracy kills and certainly has a high profile towards vocation outcomes.” The 2C4S model is driven by step-bystep improvements in self-management, self-resilience and readiness to work. Mr Wangman said 2C4S ensures that vulnerable people are able to build their skills sets to move on to higher level education or to uphold their employment once they obtain a job. “Our learners often tell us that the main goal in their life is to have a job,” he said. “What’s preventing them is their lack of qualification or skills to achieve the job or sustain their job.” The Treasurer, Mr Morrison, said more than 50,000 jobs have been created for young people across Australia in the last 18 months and 2C4S does a great job at supporting youth employment. “Through this program, young people can get access to the support, mentors,
A 45-MINUTE suicide prevention workshop was launched by Minister for Health Sussan Ley on the Border last week and currently expands into 22 communities across the country, helping around 9000 people a year. The ALERT program, run by OzHelp Foundation, aims to increase the awareness and understanding of depression, anxiety, resilience and suicidal behavior in workplaces and secondary schools. Over four years in the running, the ALERT program was recently given a 12-month philanthropic grant from John T. Reid Charitable Trusts to help expand the workshops to people in rural and remote areas. OzHelp chief executive Tony Holland said the ALERT program was extremely important and unlike other support programs. “We know there’s an absolute need for a program like ours to be available to all of Australia, particularly rural remote Australia,” Mr Holland said. “This program is very targeted to the whole of the population and is very simple and easy to understand. “Today has been great opportunity for us to pilot the program in to rural Australia.” A free phone app is also available as part of the ALERT program and provides participants with updated information on workshop topics, awareness checklists and relevant support services. Health Minister Sussan Ley said she was pleased to see that Albury would receive another mental health early intervention program that would help reduce stigma on mental health. “This program is to ensure that in any work place, be that a school or construction site, people are conscious of the signs, signals and the

Grants to fight violence By MONIQUE KUZEFF WODONGA is ranked ninth in the state for domestic violence - and over the past five years there has been a “massive increase of 91 per cent in reported incidents, according to Wodonga police sergeant John Huntington. Last week, in a cross-Border partnership between Wodonga Council and AlburyCity and Wodonga and Albury police, a Prevention of Violence Against Women grants program was launched. The new grants program was established in response to the rising
incidences of family violence on the Border, with $25,000 to go towards tackling the issue. This sum of money was raised following the inaugural White Ribbon Ball last year in November and will be available to organisations, agencies and initiatives on the Border and North East. Wodonga councillor and White Ribbon ambassador Mark Byatt said the grants program will be utilised as a mechanism to distribute the funding. “It was important that we got some governance framework around the grants program itself and both councils
have developed it in unity to provide a guideline around how we will manage the distribution of the funds, Cr Byatt said. “It’s not a single effort and it needs to be a sustained effort. The communities are having a unity and purpose and are really starting to work on this behavior and attitude that is not to be tolerated in these communities. The funding is made available through two categories focused on both prevention and assistance. The first category will be available to the communities as support for
events, initiatives and programs, which will prevent and raise awareness of family violence. The second category will be used to help support agencies, which specialise in assisting women and children experiencing violence across the Border. Applicants in the two categories can apply for a grant from $500 up to $5000 once a year Sgt Huntington said factors relating to family violence in Wodonga included socio-economic position and lack of services in rural and regional cities. “Access to services have been hard-
er to come by in rural areas, Sgt Huntington said. “It’s a significant issue for Victoria Police, especially the repeat aspect of it and we know we can’t do it alone. “We acknowledge this vigilant activity and involvement of community through this grants program that will increase the awareness of the issue across the communities to help change attitudes. Further information on how to apply for the grants will be available from AlburyCity and Wodonga Council websites.
lot of Positive spin on our economic trends Hole trouble By MONIQUE KUZEFF
LAST week, the chief economist of the biggest brokerage in Australia, CommSec’s Craig James, took to the Border to discuss the global, Australian, and Albury economies at an Albury Northside Chamber of Commerce event. Interest rates, exchange rates and the share market were some of the topics discussed during the event at the Albury Entertainment Centre. Mr James focused on the positive fundamentals of Australia, highlighting the opportunities that are imminent for the country and saying that the Australian economy is in “really good shape. “China are moving from the mining boom era to the dining boom era, and this is a time when Chinese consumers will start to embrace more and more products that we have here in Australia, Mr James said. “Whether it's beef, milk or vitamins - our produce and consumer goods here are held in very high regard, and
that presents some enormous opportunities for rural and regional Australians to tap into the benefits. While projections show Australian Government debt will continue to rise, it is substantially less that the majority of developed economies around the world, Mr James told News Weekly. “At the moment it's around 10 to 15 per cent of GDP but to put that in context, some of the other major industrial countries in the world have around 70 to 80 per cent. “In the case of Japan they’ve got something like 170 per cent of their GDP as their debt level, so the fact we’ve got it at 10 to 15 per cent is actually very good. However, the 10 to 15 per cent quoted by Mr James does not constitute all public debt in Australia, but rather just Federal Government debt. According to Forbes magazine as reported in the Australian Financial Review, Australia is number two, after China, on a list of seven countries most
vulnerable to a debt crisis in the next three years. Private debt is disturbingly high, being over 175 per cent GDP and according to Forbes, economic crises often occur when private debt is over 150 times GDP. Mr James listed several indicators suggesting that the Australian economy was going well. “Our car sales are at a record high, tourists are at a record high, dwellings are at our record highs, the jobless rate is at its lowest in two and a half years and we’ve got super low interest rates. “For consumers at least, the Aussie dollar is at about 77 cents (US), which is good news for the consumer sector. Mr James said one of the major trends currently happening in Albury and across the country was the growing housing sector. “More houses are being built, more homes are being bought and there has been an increase in home values with more construction happening.

A FORD Territory crashed through two window panes into a coffee machine at North Albury’s APCO IGA Express with a close-call for the barista on Wednesday morning. The vehicle smashed through the window, about 3.50am, with only a delivery driver and one staff member in the complex at the early hour. Neither was injured. The incident caused broken chairs, tables and holes in walls with the cost of damage at around $20,000. It's believed the incident occurred after the driver’s thong was caught, which caused him to suddenly accelerate through the APCO window. The 49-year-old was sought by police on breach of detained violence order and was arrested at the scene.

Our shallow pool By MONIQUE KUZEFF THE possibilities of future aquatic facilities in Albury have been recommended to be reduced to just two options - the retention of the existing Albury and Lavington swim centres and no new indoor facility, or a new regional indoor aquatic facility at the Lauren Jackson Sports Centre and retain the Albury Swim Centre. The recommendation to present just two aquatic facility options came from AlburyCity’s Community and Cultural Committee and includes the imminent development of concepts plans, financial modeling, business cases and funding strategies for the two preferred options. Committee chairman David Thurley said the two options being presented were the result of the previous extensive community consultation process in which residents were asked to consider seven different options. “We received close to 1000 submissions, both on and off-line as well as through information sessions, the aquatics facilities advisory committee and petition lodged by the Albury Diving Club,” Cr Thurley said. The council obtained a better understanding of what aquatic facilities the community would like to see after a large number of submissions were put in, with 50 per cent in support of a regional aquatic facility with a 51.5 metre indoor pool at the Lauren Jackson Sports Centre. A diving club petition requested springboard diving facilities to be included in future plans. Cr Thurley said that if the council were to approve the committee’s recommendation, there would be a significant process to be undertaken before a final decision was made.
Council might consider only two options for aquatic facilities in Albury.
“If the council agrees to a new regional facility, and subsequently obtains appropriate external funding it would be at least five years before it opened.”
Meanwhile, the committee will recommend to the council that it adopt the Lavington Sports Ground master plan and commence the redevelopment project.
Following a four-week public exhibition period, there were no significant issues identified, although the master plan has been slightly modified based on community feedback.
All joining in for the fight against crims ALBURY MP Greg Aplin has praised the efforts of the hard-working men and women in the Albury Local Area Command for their excellent work to reduce local crime. Mr Aplin said the latest quarterly data from the Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research (BOCSAR) reflected the tireless efforts of local police and the co-operation of the community. In the year leading up to December 2015, only one of the 17 major offence categories showed a significant upward trend state-wide, while seven offences were trending down. Mr Aplin said local data from the Albury electorate followed the state-wide trend, with many offences stable or trending down. “I am very proud to see a downward trend of 56.9 per cent in 'break and enter non-dwellings' in the Corowa LGA. There has however been a rise of 79.6 per cent in the fraud category for the Albury LGA. “I credit these results to the pro-active work of our local police and their efforts to investigate and prosecute crime across our community,” Mr Aplin said. BOCSAR has again identified increases in prohibited drug possession throughout NSW, including a 30.6 per cent increase in amphetamine possession and a 35.9 per cent increase in cocaine possession. “The secondary crime statistics relating to drug possession remain a concern and highlight the need for the NSW Liberals and Nationals Government to continue to implement our targeted plan to stamp out drugs and support affected communities,” Mr Aplin said. “Data relating to drug possession showcases the success of the NSW Police Force to find drugs in our communities, hold dealers to account and deter further use.”

‘Push’ comes to nothing By MONIQUE KUZEFF LIBERAL Candidate for Indi Sophie Mirabella has denied pushing Federal Indi MP Cathy McGowan at a function. It had been claimed that Ms Mirabella intervened to stop a photo being taken of Ms McGowan with Assistant Minister for Health and Aged Care Ken Wyatt. Both politicians attended the opening of the new Alice Goulding Wing at
Cooinda Village in Benalla on Friday 15 April, where the alleged incident took place. Ms Mirabella took to Twitter in response to the allegation. “I emphatically reject reports I pushed Cathy McGowan,” Ms Mirabella tweeted. “Reporter did not even bother [sic] 2 call me. A sad return [sic] 2 nasty tactics from my opponents.” Ms Mirabella later said that a press
report on the issue was wrong and defamatory. “It was totally wrong and defamatory and it was really disappointing they didn’t contact me,” Ms Mirabella told NewsWeekly. “It’s really important that when this false information is out there, people come forward straight away and say that it’s not true, “Because in the meantime, I’ve been trolled on social media and that’s
been on the basis of totally false information.” Ms Mirabella said she was pleased to receive a statement from Cathy McGowan’s office on the issue. “It was good to get a belated statement saying that it was not true, because there was no physical contact,” she said. The statement from Ms McGowan’s office said that she had requested a photo to be taken with Mr Wyatt MP
and a commemorative plaque when Ms Mirabella intervened. “This was an important event for Cooinda Village and I felt disappointed for people who were in the vicinity when the unfortunate incident occurred,” the statement read. “I would now like to put this matter behind me.” Both Ms Mirabella and Ms McGowan said they wanted to put the situation to bed and focus on the best policies that could be delivered for Indi.
It’s a journey through Jim’s soul By MONIQUE KUZEFF RENOWNED for his portrait, figurative, masquerade and nude artwork, Myrtleford artist Jim Van Geet opened his exhibition, Soul Journey, at MAMA last Thursday, alongside two of his muses - the well-known and charismatic barrister Charles Waterstreet and the beautiful Argentinian, Gabriela Ruiz. The exhibition, which encompasses 15 paintings, delves into the personalities of his muses, extracting the essence of each individual to put down on canvas. Having accomplished hundreds of paintings, Mr Van Geet has won numerous awards and is recurrently sought after for commissions. “People fascinate me and it’s my interaction, feeling, response and perception of them that is important to me and is conveyed through the paintings,” Mr Van Geet said. “They’re all so unique and
have different stories so when I get glimpses of who they are they’re the parts I put down on canvas.” Mr Van Geet said he enjoyed working with Mr Waterstreet, who he has previously painted in ‘The Jury Whisperer’, spending numerous hours in his chambers observing his interaction. “He (Waterstreet) is a very complex person and somewhat a flawed character you might say,” he said. “There are so many sides to his personality that it was very difficult to pick out one.” Mr Waterstreet can be observed in the portrait ‘Charles Billich in his World, 2012’ where he is portrayed in the Library of his Chambers being doted over by two nude women. With humour, Mr Waterstreet said Mr Van Geet's portrait of him is a “lyrical piece of great talent” that shows the “sheer heart Jim puts into his art”.
“I’m not just saying that because he painted me, but the way he goes about his painting and his talent and expertise is evident,” Mr Waterstreet said. “I chose to pose with these two beautiful women because they were set against each other with the red hair and the blonde hair. “I like a bit of yin and yang,” he joked. Mr Van Geet said he wanted viewers to deeply consider the stories when they look at the portraits and to question why they are being portrayed in those ways. “The outcomes of my paintings portray how I perceive the individuals and my own interaction with them. I want the viewer to finish the picture for themselves and to ask questions about the figures in the portrait.” Soul Journey will be showcased at MAMA until 8 May with free entry. All portraits are available for purchase.

Anzacs on the Border By MONIQUE KUZEFF THOUSANDS gathered across the Border on Monday to pay tribute to the servicemen and women lost during war. Wodonga’s Dawn Service attracted some astounding numbers, with an estimated 3200 people making an appearance during the early and frosty morning. Vietnam war veterans marched the streets across the Border, many alongside their partners, remembering those who
had paid the ultimate sacrifice for their country. Beautiful warm weather was maintained throughout the day, contrasting the tears and memories that came flooding out of many of those marching and lining the streets of Albury and Wodonga. News Weekly photographer KATIE HARDMAN joined the Anzac Parade, capturing the special moments of Anzac Day.

A win for ownerdrivers By MONIQUE KUZEFF
Ms Mirabella said the concern to protect owner-drivers from pushing on through the night was just a “ruse” for the tribunal. “No-one has been able to explain why the same truck driven by an owner-driver has to be more expensive to hire than if it was driven by one of his or her employees,” she said. “There are extraordinary rigorous conditions and we do need to be vigilant on safety but discriminating between employees and ownerdrivers to price owner-drivers out of the market does not improve safety in any way.” Ms Mirabella said she had spoken with some owner-drivers after the Bills had been introduced into the House and they were thrilled with the outcome. “I had a text conversation with quite a few of them and called a couple of them, they were quite ecstatic themselves. “Unfortunately, some of them have already lost thousands of dollars and its not something they can get back but there is relief that the tribunal is gone. “A majority of the cross-bench in the Senate has now supported owner-drivers and supported jobs and small-businesses.”
OWNER-DRIVERS around the nation would be celebrating after the Federal Government revoked the Road Safety Remuneration Tribunal (RSRT), which discriminated against owner-drivers of small businesses by pricing them out of the transport sector. The RSRT, an independent national tribunal of the road transport industry, detrimentally affected road transport drivers and their employers or hirers, and participants in the supply chain in relation to road transport drivers. Liberal candidate for Indi Sophie Mirabella said she was “ecstatic” about the new Bills being introduced to abolish the RSRT and protect owner-drivers. “A lot of local owner-drivers of small businesses and their families can now get on with the job of earning a living and they don’t have to live in fear of their house being taken away, going out of business and being bankrupt,” Ms Mirabella said. “I feel really excited and elated that our local owner-drivers and others around Australia put their passion to save their livelihoods and businesses to leave something for their children in the future.”

DID YOU KNOW
VOTING RULES HAVE CHANGED?
Make your vote count this federal election. At this year’s federal election, the way you vote for the Senate has changed and it’s important that you understand how to vote correctly.
If you choose to vote below the line, you must number at least 12 boxes, from 1 to 12, for individual candidates in the order of your choice.
On the large white Senate ballot paper, you can choose to vote either above or below the line.
Voting for the House of Representatives has not changed. On the green ballot paper, you must number every box, starting with the number ‘1’ for your first choice, ‘2’ for your second choice and so on until you have numbered every box.
If you choose to vote above the line, you now need to number at least 6 boxes. Put the number ‘1’ in the box for the party or group that is your first choice, a ‘2’ for your second choice and so on until you’ve numbered at least 6 boxes.
‘How to vote’ instructions will be clearly displayed on your ballot paper. Don’t worry if you make a mistake — just ask for another ballot paper.

Kubota Kommander Z122R zero turn over mower. 152044
Kubota has the moves By MONIQUE KUZEFF WITH the residential user in mind, Kubota has churned out an all-new Kommander Z122R zero turn over mower that is able to manoeuvre easily both in and out of tight spaces without compromise to power. This innovative mower is powered by a high performing Kawasaki engine and offers stability, accessible controls, low centre of gravity and plenty of legroom upfront in a wide foot pan for its users’ convenience and comfort.
Its rugged, low-maintenance and integrated transmission design delivers outstanding power and operational efficiency to the wheels and mower deck and the dual operation levers provide precise control for perfect trimming and work around those intricate spaces including trees and flowerbeds. With just a simple twist of a dial, the Kommander Z122R zero turn over allows you to adjust the cutting height in precise quarter-inch increments. You will be able to pump out your work in a day with option-
al LED headlights which allow you to continue mowing in low light conditions. In order to help protect your lawn, the Kommander Z122R zero turn over also has large Ultracaper Z rear tyres providing a softer ride, better traction and weight distribution. So, if your old mower has had its run and you seeking a good quality, hard-working and reliable mower to take its place, the Kommander Z122R zero turn over is the next mower for the job.
Dr Burton, who is originally from Orange, NSW, graduated from his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine at Melbourne University in December. Dr Burton said he had always planned to get into rural practice so he could work closely with cattle - his major interest. “I have always been interested in cattle and my lecturers and mentors told me I should go in to a dairy practice to progress my skills with individual cows. “I wanted to be able to compare the differences between that and cattle work and that’s why I spent some weeks working with dairy cows down south before coming here.” Dr Burton did 20 weeks of placement in his final year at university and part of that was rural placement. He said he enjoyed being able to work outside and travel to various jobs to look at different animals. “At Walwa Veterinary Practice you get to do different jobs with cattle but also there is a fair bit of horse work we do here as well.” Dr Burton has been at the practice for six weeks and plans on staying for quite a while. As a graduate he said he had been led in gently and another vet was teaching him new things while he is still fresh into the work and learning. “I’ll be here for at least for four to five years - I have no plans
For the safe delivery of your larger animals, call the experienced team at Walwa Veterinary Practice. 143400 Picture: CONTRIBUTED to get out of here,” he said. “I love the place - it’s fairly unique as I’m allowed to do more individual cattle work rather than crowd work. “Walwa is so beautiful with heaps of work to do - I was very
lucky to get a position here. “We’ve got pretty clever veterinarians here - and I will have someone supervising me over the next 12 months and then I’ll start to get more responsibility.”

Micro Kia making it big By ALISTAIR KENNEDY
WHILE the weather is still beautiful it is a great time to be out and about on a motorcycle in our part of the world. And that’s exactly what Brenda and I have been doing, joining our local RAT (Riders Association Triumph) group earlier this month for a trip up the river road via Walwa and then on to Khancoban and a quick blast up to Murray One power station for a look around before heading back to Khancoban pub for lunch and returning home via Corryong. A great day’s ride I would recommend to anyone looking for a great day ride. Every time I am out on the bike it reminds me how lucky we are to live in this area. It was also great to see so many people out enjoying their motorcycles! Moto GP has kicked into full swing now with Marc Marquez dominating both fly away rounds in North and South
America while once back in Europe the Yamahas got back to the front. But to most people’s surprise it was Valentino Rossi who stole the show in Jerez, beating home Jorge Lorenzo and Marc Marquez. The smaller classes are also exciting with Sam Lowes putting on a dominate display in Spain and Brad Binder riding what I thought was the race of the weekend in the Moto 3 class, after qualifying second he was placed at the back of the grid in 35th position due to a technical infringement. This did not stop him though; coming through the field to win the race comfortably it was something special to watch. Locally the bike scene has been busy too, with a large group of riders travelled to Colac for the second round of the Victorian Motocross round. The Albury Wodonga Mo-
torcycle Club ran another successful speedway meeting under lights at the Lincoln causeway complex and there was also a very successful track day held at the rider training circuit at Barnawartha. I was also fortunate enough this month to throw a leg over the two new Thruxton models from Triumph and was super impressed by them. Triumph has certainly upped the ante with their new range of bikes. The quality of finish is as good as anything on the market, they are loaded with features such as ride by wire, slip assist clutches, selectable rider modes, traction control and ABS just to name a few and both bikes were exciting to ride! It is a very big year for Triumph, with more new models already here or due soon. Safe riding until next month.
New Kia Picanto is cute, capable and competitively priced. trim finish on the bottom of the dashboard and lower part of the steering wheel. The major controls are large and well-placed. The steering wheel is height adjustable only Kia does interior storage better than just about anyone else, with the USB and Aux socket recessed immediately above a phone-sized space and twin retractable drinkholder arms that fold back when not in use to provide a large open storage space in the centre console. Luggage capacity is 200 litres with all seats in place, increasing to 605 litres with the 60:40 rear seatbacks lowered. There is a space saver spare wheel below the boot floor. Infotainment features are limited to the Bluetooth phone and audio streaming with information displayed on a small red-on-back screen. Only one Picanto specification level is offered with a 1.2-litre petrol engine, fourspeed automatic. With only 63 kilowatts of power and 120 Newton metres of torque (at 4000 rpm) from its 1248cc engine Picanto isn’t a ball of fire. Having said that, of its competitors, only Holden’s Spark has higher outputs. In addition the 3.6-metre long hatchback weighs in at a just under 1000 kilograms so even with an old style four-speed auto it is livelier than expected, but an extra gear would be nice. Fuel consumption is listed at 5.6 litres per 100 kilometres on the combined urban/highway cycle. We’ll provide a real-life figure when we do our extended test in a few weeks. Picanto is a clear winner in an auto-vs-auto affordability comparison with a driveaway price that will remain until the new model arrives next year. It has Kia’s industry-leading seven-year / unlimited kilometre warranty.

Cost-savings have been made with the omission of features such as cruise control and reversing camera, neither of which we see as being critical in a car of this size. It does get rear parking sensors. The little Kia has achieved an ANCAP five-star safety rating. It has six airbags; ABS brakes with electronic brake distribution and brake assist; stability and traction control; hill-start assist; daytime running lights; outer rear seat IsoFix anchorage points; and a high-mounted rear stop light with emergency-stop signal. In line what will be its typical urban habitat Kia launched Picanto to the media in the nation’s capital with a small dose of rural terrain to add some variety. Around town it’s sharp, nimble and easy to park with good driver visibility all round. Our only issue came when we left the city, no problems on the flat but the old four-speed auto struggled to find the right cog on hilly terrain. Kia Australia is brimming with confidence at the moment on the back of three category wins in the 2015 ABC Best Cars awards and March yearto-date sales that are up by 21.6 per cent on the same period last year. That confidence has been extended to Picanto with predicted sales of 300 units a month. Given that Mirage is still the segment’s top-seller at the end of the first quarter of 2016, and is averaging less than 200 per month, it’s a big call. But credit to Kia for making it - not many car companies do so nowadays. Clearly the value equation will have a major influence on Kia’s sales target and that, combined with the five-star ANCAP rating and seven-year warranty makes for an inviting package to parents looking to purchase an attractive, safe and competent first car for their children.

Saddling up under the sun
KIA has entered the Australian micro car market with a small five-door hatch called Picanto that combines cute looks, automatic transmission as standard, capable performance, and an appealing driveaway price of $14,990. Small city (aka micro) cars have historically been poor sellers in Australia with its sprawling suburbs and cheap fuel. However increasing environmental awareness has seen a surge in popularity of the segment which is populated by cars such as the market-leading Mitsubishi Mirage, Nissan Micra, Suzuki Celerio and Holden Spark. As with the other cars in the segment Kia’s primary target for Picanto will be late-teen / early 20s females, with a smattering of baby boomers taking up the slack. Those at the young end of the age scale typically have a three-point check list - cute styling, affordability and the latest in infotainment technology. While Picanto ticks the first two boxes the model that has just arrived in Australia is nearly five years old and lags significantly behind its newer competitors in tech features. Despite its age the styling of Picanto (love that name, it sounds like it should mean something in Italian … but doesn’t) is fresh and contemporary courtesy of a 2015 facelift. Although it’s built in South Korea there is the European influence that is characteristic of all new Kia models penned by design chief Peter Schreyer. The bold frontal treatment of Picanto includes the Kia ‘Tiger’ nose design with a mesh infill to both the grille and large lower air intake. The sculpted side features a rising character line with the rear fringed by eye-catching ‘inverted comma’ taillights. There’s a reassuringly solid feel when you get into new Picanto and entry / exit is easier than would be imagined. The tall styling works particularly well and the boxy shape provides a surprising amount of interior space. The seats are firm but comfortable and there’s good headroom in all seats and reasonable rear seat legroom. There’s an attractive chrome

You’ll want more of Oliver By TANIA PHILLIPS CHARLES Dickens’ classic tale, Oliver Twist is set to hit the stage with a musical adaptation for the entire family to enjoy. Presented by The Albury Wodonga Theatre Company, this lively production is sure to entertain. With a gifted line-up of local performers, including a large cast of children, Oliver! will be staged with four performances on Thursday 28 and Friday 29 April at 7.30pm, Saturday 30 April at 2pm and 7.30pm at the Albury Entertainment Centre, Swift Street Albury. Oliver! is the memorable story of an orphan who runs away from a workhouse and meets up with a ragtag group of trained pickpockets, who under the guidance of the unscrupulous Fagin, manage to thieve their way through the grimy streets of Victorian London right under the constabulary's nose. The musical includes such iconic songs as Food, Glorious Food, Consider Yourself, Who Will Buy? You’ve Got to Pick a Pocket or Two, Oom-Oom-PahPah, As Long As He Needs Me and many more! It is a chance to be entertained by some of musical theatre's mostloved characters such as the rambunctious Artful Dodger, the heroine Nancy, the devious Fagin, the

BACK at the Calgary Winter Olympics in 1988 a Bobsled team from Jamaica made history and headlines competing in a winter games despite not knowing much about the sport just a few years earlier. Their story became the basis for the movie Cool Runnings, so it was probably not surprising that there would be a movie one day about the other unlikely competitor from those games – a British ski jumper called Michael Edwards. The surprise is that it’s taken this long, to be honest. Edwards – better known as Eddie the Eagle, became the first Brit since the ’20s to compete in the frankly insane sport of ski jumping. His presence at the games was a little divisive to say the least. You either loved him or hated him – thought he was an attention seeker making a laughing stock of the games or a brave man getting out and giving it a go in the true Olympic Spirit. This bio-pic (based loosely on his life) plays for laughs similarly to Cool Runnings and portrays “Edwards’ never-say-die approach to the sport, celebrates the human spirit and resilience in the face of extraordinary odds and challenges”. It is standard bio-pic fare, the misunderstood underdog taking on the world despite the oddsthere is nothing terribly groundbreaking here. However what makes it watchable and enjoyable is a really fine performance by Taron Egerton in the title role and an equally great turn by Hugh Jackman with an almost believable American accent, as his coach. This is a typical Jackman role but while he missed the mark with this style of character in last year’s sci-fi movie Chappie, this time he’s pitch perfect as the disgraced American jumper who reluctantly coaches Edwards to the games. The pair have great chemistry and really make this a lot of fun to watch. Actor turned director Dexter Fletcher gets great performances out of his two main stars as well as keeping the story moving along well. While Eddie soars against the odds (to jump and land from 70 metres and 90 metres with just

Strassman pulls new face By TANIA PHILLIPS DAVID Strassman is a funny man - so funny he can talk to himself and make people laugh. Well not quite - he does have a little help in the form of a load of wellknown “faces” - but that’s what happens when you are one of the world’s best-known ventriloquists. However that doesn’t mean the Californian-based funnyman rests on his laurels. He’s been performing with his friends, most notably Ted E Bare and Chuck Wood, since the ’80s and making Australian audiences laugh since the early ’90s. “I’ve been coming out there since 1991,” he said. Since his early performances in the 1990s, Strassman has been embraced in Australia and completed numerous television appearances as well as his own show on Channel Nine called ‘Strassman’, with subsequent series on ITV England and TV3 New Zealand. And while he’s a funnyman, he takes making people laugh seriously and completely retools his shows every three years. So what you saw when he was last in this region is not what you’ll see this time - not by a long shot. And that’s quite an undertaking for the talented performer and his friends - as he points out this is not like a stand-up comedian who can just turn up with some new jokes and head on to the stage. “No it’s not like Jimeon or someone like that,” he laughed.
Selfie time with Ted E Bare and David.
The gang's all here - an all anamatronic discussion about the future of electronic devices and a whole lot of fun with David Strassman. “It is a full on production with props. Stand-up you can sit there with a stool and a glass of water. I travel with a six tonne truck, full-on stage sets and props.” And while he rethinks his act every three years it’s not just to make people laugh, it’s to keep it relevant with Strassman always liking to “leave people with something to think about”. His current production, he hopes is thought-provoking, funny and just a little bit mind-blowing. He’s already performed it more than 70 times around the world to great success.
Chuck, Ted and David Strassman prepare for their world domination or something like that. “It breaking the laws of puppetry,” he says about the “iTedE” show. In a world-first feat, Strassman simultaneously operates five characters in a never-before-done six-way conversation, using a handheld wireless remote control (each of the five characters controlled by one finger) and setting new standards in ventriloquism. The show “iTedE” is a chance for Strassman to take a look at the modern world at technology and the changes in society. “People standing in the queue at Woolies and Coles these days and no-
one is looking around any more, they are all their phones,” he said. In iTedE, the sharp-tongued Chuck Wood and loveable Ted E Bare have been thrust into the world of social media, constantly on their iPads and iPhones, not interacting with the real world. With everyone connected to the internet 24/7, will Strassman get them back under control? “The first half of the show is set in my Hollywood workshop and Chuck and Ted E are constantly on Facebook and on social media,” he said.
“The second half is a TED (Technology, Entertainment and Design) talk between five of the characters - a six-way conversation,” he said. But with Strassman’s characters Chuck, Ted E, Grandpa Fred, Kevin the Alien and Sid Beaverman this is going to be a TED talk like no other. He admits this is his most technically advanced stage production yet. ITedE introduces new technology that brings the world’s most advanced puppetronics to the stage. Combined with cutting edge lighting and jaw-dropping production, Strassman and his well known puppet characters will bring mayhem and theatrics to a set designed by one of New York’s most renowned stage designers, Luke Cantarella. See Strassman at Albury on Sunday 8 May, 6pm, at the Albury Entertainment Centre, details on (08) 8951 1122 or alburycity.nsw.gov.au/entertainment; and at Wangaratta on Monday 9 May, 7pm, at the Wangaratta Performing Arts Centre, (03) 5722 8105 or wangarattapac.com.au

Weekly Real Estate Albury Wodonga’s Property Guide
Solid first three months
Enzo Raimondo CEO Real Estate Institute of Victoria
IN THE first three months of the year, regional Victoria’s property market remained relatively stable with a median house price of $347,500. Despite a moderate start to 2016, the latest REIV quarterly data shows multiple regional towns recorded significant price increases in the three months to 31 March. The Ballarat suburb of Soldiers Hill was the best performing
in the March quarter with house prices increasing 14.8 per cent to a median of $373,000. This was up from $325,000 in the December quarter. Solid price growth was also recorded in the Geelong suburb of Herne Hill where house prices rose 8.7 per cent to a median of $388,000, up from $357,000 in the previous quarter. Similar growth was also experienced in the central Gippsland
town of Churchill and the commuter town of Bacchus Marsh. House prices in Churchill rose 8.6 per cent over the quarter to a median of $195,000, up from $179,500 in December - an increase of more than $15,000. Meanwhile, Bacchus March’s median house price increased 8.4 per cent to $400,000, up from $369,000 in December. Other towns experiencing capital growth in the first three
months of the year included Inverloch, up eight per cent to a median of $475,000; Daylesford, up 7.8 per cent to $485,000; Hamilton, up 7.2 per cent to $275,000; Ballarat North, up 7.1 per cent to a median of $342,750; Swan Hill, also up 7.1 per cent to $300,000; and Shepparton, up seven per cent to $267,500. While a high number of public holidays saw less stock on market in the first three months of the year, Mildura had the state’s
highest turnover with 354 homes sold in the year to March 31. This was followed by Traralgon and Ocean Grove, with 265 and 228 sales respectively. High sales volumes were also recorded in Highton (190 sales), Ballarat Central (169 sales), Morwell (160 sales), Drouin (156 sales) and Sale (155 sales). THE Ovens and Murray Football Netball league certainly did themselves proud with their Anzac Commemoration Ceremonies before the games last weekend. The Myrtleford players turned their fortunes around with a thrilling five-point victory over last year’s grand finalists Lavington. Evergreen coach Brad Murray contributed in a big way to the hometown turnaround. The Pigeons would have had a pleasant trip home down the Murray River after accounting for a brave Corowa Rutherglen combination by some 108 points. Bradley O’Connor returned to his super form of yesteryear to kick a handy nine goals. The Wang City Derby again proved a “ripper” with the Rovers blasting away in the final term
with six goals to the Magpies solitary goal to have the Rovers sitting in fifth position level on points with Lavington and North Albury. It was Derby Day on the Border with North Albury hosting the Tigers and Raiders making their way to the John Flower oval for what turned out to be an entertaining game with the hosts winning the last quarter but the deficit was too great to pull back. Before the season gets much older, do yourself a favour and have a look at Jydon Neagle. Very impressive indeed with a handy nine “twin flaggers” which is a nice return on effort. The ball was delivered well but he also made great position. Albury were well behaved in a sense but blotted their “good visitor” reputation by sneaking away with the all important four points to remain on top of the table closely
followed by Yarrawonga. Early days but there aren’t any “gimme” games in 2016. This week’s round will see great interest in the Raiders biggest date so far this year- a trip into NSW to take on the Tigers. One consolation is that it is a quick trip home if the Tigers are totally unsociable and run rampant, but with a bit of balance coming into the ranks with the possibility of a new player coming on board. Maybe Todd Bryant back and who knows what! The leagues “Heckyl and Jekyll” team the Wang Magpies will play host to North Albury in what should be a great contest at Norm Minns Oval. North will be keen to hold onto their top four position, so being more consistent will take the points. Yarrawonga at home to Myrtleford should see the home side score a big victory, but when they
start daydreaming they can let lesser sides in and make life difficult for themselves. Pigeons! Wodonga will take the freeway across to Lavington and while it may be a smooth trip across, they will run into a Panther side on the rebound from their five-point loss against Myrtleford and may put on a training drill to repay their fans disappointment of last week. Finally, one that will be a very interesting game is to be played at Corowa when they welcome the Wangaratta Rovers. Rovers will be keen to maintain their position on the ladder and will inflict some pain on the youthful Kangaroos. Listening to their coach’s instructions last week one came away thinking there is a lot of positivity in the way Terry Burgess approaches his task and improvement will come if they follow his instructions.
