Founding principal A NEW Pakenham state primary school has appointed its founding principal. Previously referred to as Pakenham South West Primary School, the new Henry Road Primary School is due to open its doors in time for the 2017 school year, with scope for a future secondary school adjacent to the site. The school’s inaugural principal Tanya Roberts has been the principal of Pakenham Consolidated School for over the past eight years and has worked as a primary school teacher for more than 18 years, having begun her teaching career at Brentwood Park Primary School in Berwick. She is also the network chair for the Cardinia Principals Network. “I am thrilled to be part of the delivery of this priority new school in the Pakenham community," Ms Roberts said. “I can’t wait to start working with local families to ensure that their children are getting the best opportunity to succeed. “I look forward to meeting

with you and sharing information about our amazing new school." Henry Road Primary School is one of 15 new schools being delivered through a $291 million Public Private Partnership Project. Member for Eastern Victoria Daniel Mulino said the new PPP schools would incorporate “state-of-the-art facilities and designs", and will feature a range of “exciting community spaces" for local families and residents. The Henry Road Primary School will have an early learning centre, a multi-purpose space, an expanded gymnasium, embedded environmental sustainability education and meeting rooms for community use. Ms Roberts will hold an information evening for parents on Wednesday 25 May at Officer Secondary College at 6.30pm to discuss enrolments and the school’s design and its features. SMSF’s or Self Managed Super Fund’s have become very popular for those wanting to invest in property or to gain more control over their super funds over recent years. There are exceptions on purchasing business premises but, generally speaking, you are only allowed to invest 5% of fund assets in investments involving related parties. That is, assets owned directly or indirectly by a trustee/member. If you choose to go down this path, please get advice from an adviser or accountant both licensed and experienced in this area. Fitting parade for the kids By ANEEKA SIMONIS EXCITED little faces bundled onto colourful and creative floats which made their way through central Pakenham for Yakkerboo’s annual parade on the weekend. It was a special 40th anniversary celebration for the Yakkerboo Festi-

val, and many floats suited the historic milestone with ’70s inspired decorations and a strong flower power theme. Pakenham Consolidated School took out the title as the Champion Float and Cardinia Primary School won Best School Float - but the festival’s president said all entrants were winners. “It’s not about winning awards, it’s

about kids having fun on the day,” said Yakkerboo Festival Committee president Michael Porter. The Best Kindergarten Float was taken out by Andrews Kindergarten. Mr Yakkerboo himself spruced up for the big anniversary event over the weekend, gracing the parade with his fresh, revamped look.

All smiles on the trolleys By ALANA MITCHELSON ADDITIONAL-NEEDS trolleys have reached Cardinia Coles supermarkets as part of a national rollout to alleviate stress from parents of children with disabilities during the shopping experience. Based on an American trolley known as ’Caroline’s Cart’, the new trolley design allows for a child weighing up to 70 kilograms to be supported in an inbuilt seat that has padding on either side and a harness with loops to secure the child’s arms and a seatbelt across the waist. Lisa Van Der Molen and her seven-year-old son Cooper have benefited from the new trolleys to shop at Coles since the beginning of the national rollout. “The specially-designed trolleys have made grocery shopping a lot easier,” she said. “Before these trolleys were introduced, I used to have to carry my own shopping basket and at the same time chase Cooper around the supermarket in his electric wheelchair.” Coles operations and supply chain director Andy Coleman said Coles had received a positive response from customers who have used the new trolleys during their grocery shop. “We want to help our customers to shop easily at our stores. The trolley ensures that parents and carers no longer need to juggle a wheelchair and shopping basket during their shop at Coles,” Mr Coleman said. “It means they are able to place all their groceries in a trolley while also having their child seated safely.” Suzanne Colbert, CEO of Coles partner Australian Network on Dis-

THOUSANDS worth of precious jewellery were stolen from two ransacked houses in similar fashion. Both homes, located in Pakenham and Officer, were ransacked between 5pm Friday 15 April and 1am on Saturday 16 April. The mode of entry was also similar, with victims reporting their locked homes were forcefully broken into. More than $5000 worth of jewellery including a golden necklace and ring set, earrings and gold chains were taken from a targeted Christopher Road, Officer home during the eight-hour crime window. The victim told police multiple drawers had been ruffled through during the ransacking which also involved theft of passports. Across the Princes Highway in Pakenham, a Cuttler Street home was also targeted. Police said offender/s made their way into the house by jimmying open a bedroom window before taking jewellery, watches and a purse. Investigators are yet to place a final value on the stolen goods. Police suspect the two burglaries may be linked. Anyone with information about either incidents is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

OUR mayor was on the news last week stating that Casey council would fight against a liquor store being built in Cranbourne East. As stated, this was due to the high levels of family violence within the City of Casey and more so in the Cranbourne East area. Now, there are many factors to family violence, not just alcohol. We have drugs, money stress, and mental issues and this is just a few. I would like to ask the mayor, knowing Casey Central opened its newly extended shopping centre on 17 March, what input did the mayor have in stopping another bottle shop that has opened up outside the centre, making two within walking distance of each other - and this is in his ward! Casey council has criticised the approval of a Dan Murphy’s store in Cranbourne East, an area which has the highest incidence of family violence in the City of Casey, which itself has a high incidence of family violence involving alcohol. Here’s what our Facebook readers think. Need more venues for the growing numbers of kids in the area to have something to do. Not alcohol shops. Denise Mary Lloyd via Facebook. Can your journalists challenge the figures that were put out in The Age article on this matter today? I feel it provides a poor representation of the City of Casey, and this attention on the development of a Dan Murphy's store in the growth corridor of Cranbourne East is unfavourable. The housing growth of the area needs further infrastructure and support for amenities rather than nay-sayers blocking the services/ stores/ roadways that are needed. Furthermore, it is particularly unkind to tarnish this growing area by almost calling for the old prohibition laws and providing a warped view of the growth area (Cranbourne East). The numbers for this council are relevant to the council being the largest in Melbourne, and these numbers are relevant to the entirety of council rather than one new/ growing suburb. The State Government’s campaign on tackling family violence and pledged funding is a very different matter to introducing a liquor store in the growth suburb of Cranbourne East. We have lived in Cranbourne East (The Hunt Club) on the Cameron Street entrance for 13 years. We have never seen or heard anything of a violent nature and rarely see any police cars. My husband and I are not big consumers of alcohol, however would love to see Dan Murphy's in our complex! We believe it would be an asset to the shopping centre! TRADESMEN have saved an injured snake in Cranbourne West. The highly venomous copperhead snake was found on a construction site on Everlasting Boulevard in Cranbourne West about 1pm on Wednesday 13 April. The region’s snake catcher Barry Goldsmith said he was very impressed with the way the Winslow Construction workers handled the deadly animal. “Normally builders just kill the snakes but they had it in a hessian bag in the site office. I wish everybody did it like that,” Ms Goldsmith said. “They found it in the dirt where they were digging and there’s a lot of heavy machinery down there so I’m not surprised it was injured.” Mr Goldsmith took the mature copperhead to the Karingal Vet Hospital, where it will get stitches. “I’ll look after the snake for about a month until the stitches come out and then I will release it into natural swamp land in the greater Cranbourne area,” he said. Mr Goldsmith said copperhead snakes are often mistaken for brown snakes. “I’m in Casey all the time catching snakes, copperheads are the most common in southwest Cranbourne - they are very gentle snakes and reluctant to bite.”

AN ACCUSED man showed a certain contempt for courtroom etiquette in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court last week. He laughed and let out an audible burp, raising a stern word of caution from the judge. “Is your client well?” the magistrate asked the man’s lawyer. “I’m not having anyone sitting in court burping. It’s discourteous.” The accused smirked and piped up: “Sorry Your Honour. I won’t burp.” “It’s not funny,” the judge said and promptly the smile disappeared.

A CASEY councillor had a modest view of his own artistic judgement at a council meeting on 19 April. Gary Rowe labelled himself an “artistic troglodyte” ahead of launching into a passionate defence of the council’s plans to acquire art for Bunjil Place. There was a little stumble when referring to the lauded Cranbourne artist Ern Trembath. “He would be one (artist) who would deserve the honour of being hung in the gallery,” Cr Rowe said. Colleague Mick Morland retorted that he would, in that case, need some rope.

Coroner calls for drugs watch By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS THE DEATH of a Hampton Park man - who was prescribed an unhealthy mix of over-thecounter drugs - has led a state coroner to call for an urgentlyneeded real-time prescription monitoring system. Frank Edward Frood, a 47-year-old severe asthmatic, had widespread bronchopneumonia in his lungs when paramedics were unable to revive him on his parents’ lounge room floor on 28 September 2012. In her report on Mr Frood’s death, Coroner Audrey Jamieson stated that low levels of the synthetic narcotic methadone, sedatives diazepam and oxazepam, the painkiller tramadol, the anti-manic drug olanzapine and ice were detected in the man’s blood. Mr Frood, a long-term heroin user, was given two supervised methadone treatments a week at Frankston Hospital as well as five unsupervised weekly doses. A seriously dependent, Mr Frood also “shopped” for prescribed diazepam from Frankston Healthcare and eight doctors from clinics in Hampton Park, Dandenong and Cranbourne in the last six months of his life. Yet he received scripts for 600 tablets by Frankston Healthcare clinicians despite them noting he was “clearly benzodiazepine dependent and drug seeking”, Ms Jamieson stated. Ms Jamieson found the prescription of methadone and diazepam may have exarcerbated the worsening of Mr Frood’s respiratory health, though she didn’t find Mr Frood’s death was “preventable”. “Mr Frood was clearly engaged in prescription shopping and at the time of his death, as is the case even today, there were no effective tools available for prescribing doctors to establish who else a patient had attended for scripts.” An urgently-needed realtime prescription monitoring (RTPM) system may have picked up his prescription shopping before his death, she stated. An RTPM could also pick up doctors with “suboptimal” prescribing practices, and provide warnings of potentially harmful drug combinations. Ms Jamieson noted that 80 per cent of Victoria’s rising rate of overdose deaths involved pharmaceuticals. “If Victoria continues to link its RTPM efforts with nationally co-ordinated initiatives then there could be ongoing significant delays causing the deaths to continue unabated.”

According to stats cited by the State Coroner, 65 people died of a drug overdose in Casey between 2009/15 - the sixthhighest metro area in the state. Of those, pharmaceuticals (55) were involved more than illicit drugs (22) or alcohol (12). Some of these deaths included combinations of the three categories. Among the biggest killers are the anti-anxiety drug diazepam, opioid painkillers such as codeine, methadone and oxycodone, and anti-depressants. Victorian Alcohol and Drug Association chief executive Sam Biondo said it was time to recognise a “serious problem” with pharma death numbers rising to 330 in 2015. In other words, 73 more than the state’s road toll last year. “I’m not seeing a lot of action by the states or federally, and I’m at a total loss as to why,” Mr Biondo said. “We have to recognise how our society is being sold a lot of product by Big Pharma. And we are hooked on these products.” A spokeswoman for Health Minister Jill Hennessy said considerable planning had been done for real-time prescription monitoring. She said the current government was the first to commit funding - $300,000 - to the system, and had signed up to the Commonwealth’s software to support the system.

School stays sustainable By GEORGIA WESTGARTH ZANIA Cope has been in the top job just six months and has already dubbed Tooradin Primary School the most sustainable school she’s ever worked at. Ms Cope replaced longserving principal Marg Scarce after 17 years at Tooradin primary and calls her an “icon of the place.” “Marg set the school up so beautifully,” Ms Cope said. “And with the majority of our students moving on to Kooweerup Secondary, where my husband Michael teaches, the transition has just been beautiful.” Ms Cope, from Berwick, a teacher with 27 years of experience, said she fell in love with the school straight away. “When I first came to see the school, I was alerted to a family of blue tongue lizards that live on the school grounds and you just don’t get that elsewhere,” Ms Cope said. Born in New Zealand, Ms Cope said the “country feel” of Tooradin reminded her of her home town, Timaru. “I grew up in a township of just 21,000 people and since starting here I have been amazed at the incredible local support,” she said. EMMA Hayley was once embarrassed about her weight but two years on and now 60 kilograms lighter, she wears her triumph on her sleeve everywhere she goes. The proud single mother from Langwarrin recently got a tattoo of the name and logo of her beloved gym, Pinnacle Health Club in Cranbourne. Emma says she has â€œlost a personâ€? in weight and owes her new healthy life and career goals to the gym thatâ€™s stuck by her for the past two years. â€œI know people will think getting a tattoo of a business is a bit crazy, but so is losing 60 kilograms - itâ€™s a motivator every time I look down at it,â€? Emma said. Weighing in at 160 kilograms before she setfoot into Pinnacle Scoresby, Emma said she could hardly walk up the stairs to sign up, let alone work out. â€œI was scared and embarrassed, I was really big, unhealthy and unhappy, I never ate properly, never exercised, emotional eating got the best of me and it just got out of control,â€? Emma said. The 27-year-old said admitting her size was one of the hardest things to do. â€œI canâ€™t ever remember being thin, Iâ€™ve always been overweight - since the weight loss my Grade 6 primary school jumper is too big, the clothes I buy now Iâ€™ve never bought before,â€? Emma said. â€œI would drive past Pinnacle every day and think I should go in and then one day I decided I had to set a good example for my two-year-old daughter Aurora.â€? Emma owes her transformation to the one gym sheâ€™s continued to go back to. â€œIâ€™ve been to a lot of other gyms throughout my life and said Iâ€™m going to lose weight, but so many are intimating and expensive - at Pinnacle thereâ€™s no judgement,â€? she said. â€œIâ€™ve experienced trainers at other gyms who treat you like you are lesser than them because youâ€™re so unhealthy and let yourself get out of control and as a single mum I felt like I wasnâ€™t good enough.

ONE hundred kilometres is a long way to walk without a wink of sleep. But on Friday 9 April, Andray Voronov from Narre Warren pushed through both pain and sleep barriers to complete the 2016 Oxfam Trailwalker. The 27-year-old and seven teammates walked 100 kilometres from Jells Park in Wheelers Hill to Wesburn in the Yarra Valley to raise money for Oxfam. The trek took the team 29 hours to complete and raised $3280. Andray owns and runs Bootcamp HQ, a gym in Hallam, so he and his other Trailwalker team mates had been trying to get in good shape before the event. “The main reason I wanted to do it was because it’s challenging, it’s not something most people would do willy nilly,” Andray said. “It will test our mental capability and it’s about pushing yourself through it. “It’s not only a physical challenge but it’s also a mental and emotional challenge, which is why I was drawn to it.” Andray said he and the other walkers had acquainted themselves with the route, having practised with a ‘short’ 50-km hike. “We’ve done quite a few walks along the actual trail,” he said. “We have a pretty good

Anzac Day 2016

War service shaped lives BY JARROD McALEESE THE Japanese bombing of Darwin sent shockwaves through Australia ... and it was this event that inspired Warragulborn Stan Beazley to enrol in the armed forces to “fight for his country”. A country boy destined to grow up and work the farm his family lived on, Beazley, now 92, was exempted from army enlistment during World War II, but this did not deter him from joining the fight. Stationed in Darwin, Mr Beazley was deployed with the Australian General Transport Company as a driver, delivering bombs, petrol, supplies and personnel. He said that everyone, regardless of their role, was forced to be on constant alert. “We were always on guard, carrying weapons. I could never relax, even when I was off duty,” Mr Beazley said. During harvest leave from the army, Stan met a woman named Melva - who he married within three weeks.

In late 1944, Mr Beazley was informed that he was being discharged from the army. He and his wife raised five children in the years after the war and he said that Anzac Day would always be important to him. “We must show respect and remember those that didn’t return from the war,” Mr Beazley said. Mr Beazley is a resident of Villa Maria Catholic Homes (VMCH) Berwick. His neighbours Cedric Pobjoy and Freda Newsome also recalled how World War II shaped their lives. Mr Pobjoy, now 89, did not know whether he would see war when he joined the Royal Australian Air Force on his 18th birthday in 1943. An apprentice fitter and turner, he began to question his decision while sleeping on concrete in the grandstand of the MCG, which had been requisitioned by the government for military use. Mr Pobjoy was not deployed for combat, and in his 18 months of aircraft en-

gineering training in Victoria and South Australia met his future wife, Elva. The pair married in 1948 and had two children, eventually settling down in Berwick. British native Ms Newsome, now 96, served in the Women’s Royal Naval Service in England from 1941 to 1945 after deciding it was more preferable than other lines of work. “As a woman, if you didn’t join the navy, you got stuck in a factory or something, and I didn’t fancy that,” Ms Newsome said. Gaining experience in maintaining navy personnel pay records, Ms Newsome later worked as a pay clerk and finally a milk bar owner in Mordialloc where she settled with her husband and two sons. VMCH aged care residences across Melbourne will hold commemorative services on 25 April to honour those who lived and served through the world wars and subsequent military actions.

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A MAN found with synthetic cannabis broke down a Berwick resident’s gate and passed out on her couch as she sought help from neighbours. Jarrod Hewitson had flattened the gate, perhaps in an attempt to jump over it, about 5.30pm on 28 February, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court was told. The frightened victim ran for help when she spotted an apparently “drug affected” Hewitson walking towards her garage door. The accused was found by police on a couch inside the house with his hands on his head. There was a sealed packet of synthetic cannabis and a smoking pipe in his pocket, police informant Senior Constable James Middleton told the court. Hewitson, who was on a community corrections order, told police at the time he had bought the substance from a shop.

The judge said Hewitson, who had spent 50 days in presentence detention, had been detained for “more than enough” on an unlawful entry charge. The accused’s aggravated burglary charge had been dropped because the victim had left before he entered her home. Hewitson was sentenced to 30 days’ jail - which had already been served. His corrections order’s conditions were varied from unpaid community work to drug treatment and rehabilitation only.

The accused was also charged with resisting arrest while awaiting a police interview at Narre Warren police station that night. Sen Const Middleton said the interview couldn’t be completed due to Hewitson’s aggressive manner. He said the accused had offended multiple times in the past usually while in possession of an illicit drug. His lawyer told the court on 19 April there was no evidence that the accused smoked the substance. Hewitson claimed that he must have been suffering the after-effects of an epileptic seizure. The lawyer said the accused often couldn’t remember anything from the seizure but had reportedly behaved similarly during past episodes. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen noted there was no evidence of Hewitson having a seizure that day. “This is merely speculative. I get the point that he was con-

Students hit the streets STUDENTS pounded the pavement in a healthy fund-raising effort for their very own school. Cranbourne South Primary School held an ‘adidas School Fun-Run’ on Friday 15 April, in a bid to raise as much money as possible to go toward renovations. Fun Run organiser Megan Shaw said the school community was excited to get behind a fund-raising activity with a difference. “Parents enthusiastically supported the initiative as it steered students away from traditional fund-raising events that centred on junk food,” Megan said. And the health push extended past the school gates with fun run health partner Bupa dishing out free advice. Each student household was invited to participate in the ‘Bupa Family Challenge’ which aimed to help teach families to adopt life-long healthy habits.

Top seafood, steak dishes GEORGIO’S Seafood and Steak Restaurant, situated on Main Road in Beaconsfield, has been around for almost a decade, and the original owner and head chef John Georgio is still at the helm with his team of hardworking employees. Georgio’s, which opened in 2007, prides itself on the freshest seafood including Aussie king prawns, the best oysters, fish, scallops, seafood platters and the list goes on. Warriors out-run the Gators By RUSSELL BENNETT THE Pakenham Warriors’ Big V Division 2 men’s basketball side dismantled Altona on Saturday night on their Cardinia Life home floor, recording their most emphatic win of the season so far - 102-79. Jeff Reid’s team burst out of the blocks with captain Paul Phillips (15 points and 7 rebounds) and Hayden Davey (22 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists) aggressive in the paint early. The Warriors had a distinct size advantage and used it at every given opportunity, but they also out-ran the Gators - beating them up and down the floor in transition on both ends. Pakenham displayed great intensity on both sides of the ball, with Ben Gaze on this occasion taking the lead role with 28 points and 9 boards. The home side led by double digits at the end of the first quarter - 31-21 and kept the foot down for the remainder of the contest. THE Pakenham Racing Club has emerged as a real force within the Victorian racing industry after the release of the 2016/17 racing calendar last week. The season calendar features a total of 557 meetings across Victoria, with 109 metropolitan, 415 country and 33 picnic meetings to be run from 1 August, 2016 to 31 July, 2017. For the first time more than 10 per cent of Victorian meetings will be conducted at night, with the expansion of the state’s night racing circuit to 57 meetings across three venues - Moonee Valley, Cranbourne and Racing.com Park (Pakenham). Pakenham will also stage its inaugural standalone Saturday on 3 December, 2016 - a met-

ropolitan meeting headlined by the Pakenham Cup. This will see the number of standalone Saturday country meetings increase from three to four next season. Pakenham joins the Ballarat Cup meeting 19 November, the Mornington Cup on 25 March and the Bendigo Mile meeting on 1 April, 2017. Doves digging deep By DAVID NAGEL WHEN backed into a corner a victim has two options, he can lie down and die, or, he can fight on regardless of the odds. Doveton had that choice at the nine-minute mark of the final term in its South East Football Netball League clash at Narre Warren on Saturday. A 65-metre bomb from Magpies debutant Darren Sheen was followed a minute later by a Trent Cody conversion, the Magpies 14 points up, wind-assisted, and seemingly headed for victory. The Doves were in trouble. But they released the shackles, starting breaking lines and looked every inch a legitimate finals contender, producing 20-minutes of high-quality football to score a thrilling one-point victory. “We’re still learning, we’re still a work in progress, and through

my experience ball movement is probably the last thing to come,” a relieved Doveton coach Stephen O’Brien said after the match. “We proved again today that we’re a pretty hard side to score against. We just had to get our ball movement right and we did that in the last 10 minutes, our ball movement probably got us over the line in the end.” Mitch Pierce finished with three for the Doves, Shannon Henwood and Sam Raru two each, while the ruckwork of Russell Gabriel was a standout feature of the day. Matt Jameson, Jarrad Boumann and hardat-it midfielder Sam Raru were also impressive, while the cleverness of Aaron Davey and Michael Henry should not be underestimated in the dying stages. Sheen made the most of limited opportunities to kick six for the Magpies, while young big-men Jordyn Flannery and Jake Richardson

Cranbourne youngster Zac Roscoe was the shining light in Cranbourne’s eight-point victory over Pakenham at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Dandenong Stingray from last year used his pace and energy to bamboozle the Lions defence, kicking a game-high five goals for the afternoon. The Eagles kicked out to a 29-point lead in the second quarter and held on comfortably, the Lions kicking two late goals to narrow the margin. Marc Holt kicked four; Glenn Osborne was terrific down back, while Russell Lehman had a heap of it for the Lions. Champion Beaconsfield ruckman Scott Meyer was at his dominant best in the Eagles five-goal victory over Officer at Starling Road.

Meyer was superb in the ruck, and then played a kick behind the play to repel any Officer advances. Beau Dowler kicked three for the winners, with Ilan Osman and impressive youngster Callum Porter kicking two each for the Kangaroos. Tooradin scored its first win for the season after overcoming a committed Hampton Park by 58 points at Westernport Oval. The Seagulls struggles to break free early, but late first-quarter goals and a flurry at the start of the second opened up a match-winning lead. Jake O’Donnell kicked all three of his goals in the first half, Kyle Van Der Pluym kicked four, while Michael Hobbs and Josh Muling were impressive through the midfield. Seagulls and Magpies impress By DAVID NAGEL PERRENIAL cellar-dweller Tooradin has emerged as a serious threat to Narre Warren’s dreams of back-to-back titles after another super-impressive performance on the weekend. The Seagulls looked to have a really tough start to their season, but a win over Pakenham and a 63-37 win over Hampton Park on Saturday have them locked in as legitimate contenders. Pakenham coach Kerry Twyford, who saw the damage the Seagulls can do first hand in round one, said Kelly Haynes’ girls are the real deal. “I thought it was funny after round one that everyone was writing us off, but I just thought ‘Wait until you play them,” Twyford said of Tooradin. Tooradin took control against the Redbacks with an 18-9 first quarter, then totally dominated the third term -scoring 22 goals to four! The Seagulls dominated all over the court,

with Alex Duff and Haynes unstoppable under the ring while Shona Wells, Emma Walker and Holly Gillespie gave plenty of drive through the midcourt. And Ebony Dolan and Jess Maher did what they do best -stopping the opposition from scoring. The return of Kim Coulson and Sara Drain was about the only the highlight of the day for the Redbacks. Twyford’s Pakenham side showed they’re keen to stay in touch with the top sides with a very resilient 45-37 victory over Cranbourne. The Lions trailed by six at half time but continued to take the game on to run away with the four points, scoring 15 goals to five in the final term. “We really struggled to start with, not taking advantage of our intercepts and handing the ball back far too easily, but I was really happy with our second half,” Twyford said. Co-captain Meaghan Musgrave was best for the Lions while Tegan Stahl and Mel Perrins worked together nicely in the first half for the Eagles.

Narre Warren has given Doveton the ultimate reality check with a 50-31 triumph at Fox Road. Chloe Phillips dominated the scoring in the first half for the Magpies, with Tayla Shannon taking on the bulk of the scoring duties when Phillips left the court in the second quarter. Shannon scored 20 of the Magpies 27 goals in the second half, with Jemma Osborne proving a more than able back-up, with some sharp-shooting a feature of her play. Beaconsfield made it a perfect two-fromtwo with a 42-31 victory over ROC at Starling Road. The Eagles did most of their damage in the first half, leading 23-11, with Bianca Sanzaro in fine touch under the ring. Kaela Hughes was terrific for the Eagles through the midcourt, but the Kangaroos did tighten things up after half time. Understated aggression By EWAN KENNEDY THE Peugeot 308 GTi isn’t just a dress up kit added on the assembly line, its engineering was done by Peugeot Sport.

This hot French GTi is offered in two specifications: the Peugeot 308 GTi 250 has a recommended retail price of $44,990, the 308 GTi 270 is sold at $49,990. The 250 and 270 refer to the output of the engines in horsepower. Our test car was the GTi 250 and came without the added-cost extras that crop up in a lot of our test vehicles. The Peugeot is powered by a responsive turbo-petrol engine that drives through well-controlled front wheels, and chassis dynamics that sit with the best of them. The French designers have given the 308 GTi a shape that’s stylish, but certainly not overdone. The sports grille and revised side skirts look good. The rear features a gloss-black section incorporating twin exhaust pipes that are finished in chrome. These Peugeot GTi models are lower by 11 mm than the standard 308 and have wider tracks - 1570 mm at the front and 1554 mm at the rear. The 250 has 225/40 R18 Michelin Pilot Sport 3 tyres on Diamant alloy wheels. The GTi 270 sits on 19-inch Carbone light-

weight alloy wheels with wider, lowerprofile Michelin Super Sport 235/35 R19 tyres. Interior trim is in a combination of mock leather, and alcantara in dark grey with red stitching on the seats and door trim. The gear knob and steering wheel also get stitching highlights. Both models use the same 1.6-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine, but in two different states of tune. The numbers 250 and 270 in the GTi’s title refer to the output of the engines in horsepower. Metric power is rated at 184 and 200 kW. Torque is more important than power in real life driving and is a strong feature of this powerplant; both versions of the engine develop peak torque of 330 Nm from just 1900 rpm. In other words top torque is on hand virtually all the time. The 250 engine has a zero to 100 km/h acceleration time of 6.2 seconds, the 270 stops the timer at 6.0. Peugeot GTi only comes with a sixspeed manual gearbox. The GTi 270 uses of a Torsen limited-slip differential and its Electronic Stability Program puts more emphasis on driver skill by cutting in later. The ESP system can be fully disconnected, though this is only recommended for track days. Peugeot’s 9.7-inch touchscreen

gets a Redline finish in a red and black theme. Satellite navigation is standard, there’s 6.9Gb Jukebox for music storage, AM/FM radio and a CD player. Two USB ports and Bluetooth connectivity complete the package. Sound quality is good and we found the radio picking up signals at greater distances than we often experience in other cars. However the latter isn’t exactly a

scientific back-to-back test and audio input is obviously influenced by atmospheric conditions. The front seats are a Peugeot Sport design and support nicely, though not to the extent of making ingress and egress a chore. They appear to be slightly bulkier in their backrest design and therefore reduce rear-seat knee room. I’m a six-footer and anyone of the same height would find barely enough knee room behind me unless I was willing to give up a notch or three on my seat. All seat adjustments are manual, something I’m happy with in a sports model as cutting a few kilos by leaving out electric motors is always nice.

I enjoy the tiny low-set steering wheel that you look over the top of, but find Peugeot’s description of this as being a ‘head-up display’ a bit imaginative. A feature I love is that the speedo and tacho needles rotate in opposite directions. Some people find this irritating - but they fail to see the challenge is to get the tips of the two needles as close to one another as possible. Having said that, we never did achieve the ultimate needle position of 250 km/h at 6500 rpm! Engine response is very good for a high-performance turbo engine, the small capacity probably helps here. The ability to get out and around slower cars quickly and safely is always welcome. Pressing the Sport button on the centre console switches the instrument display from white to an angry red, it shows additional information on the central read-out (power, torque, boost, lateral and longitudinal acceleration). Even better, using Sport mode enhances the engine’s throaty growl. A little more volume would be appreciated, though. Steering is fast, intuitive and predictable and the ability of this hot French machine to cling on in bends and change direction quickly when asked to do really pleases those who enjoy driving.
