Plug the flood By MEGAN OGLE LOCAL residents are fed up with flooding and have called on the new Council to put a plug in the problem. Lake MacDonald resident Bob Miller alleges Noosa Council has ignored pleas for help after the Lake MacDonald estate where he lives has had an increasing issue with flooding for the past five years, which he says is due to nearby developments. “The flooding issue is man-made, it is the speed of storm water run-off from developments that Council has approved in and around Cooroy,” Mr Miller said.

“Storm water flows into Cooroy Creek then into Six Mile Creek West Branch, hits an elbow and water pipe line and flows into Lake MacDonald estate. “Council has been fully aware of the problem for over five and a half years and to date Council have done absolutely nothing to fix the problem, yet they have continued to approve developments in and around Cooroy knowing full well that there is a pre-existing flooding issue.” However Noosa Council Planning and Infrastructure project manager Adam Britton said Mr Miller’s claims were refuted by the previous

Sunshine Coast Regional Council, however new flood modelling would be considered. “Sunshine Coast Regional Council’s hydrologist previously wrote to Mr Miller in 2013 refuting his suggestions that new development runoff was causing increased flooding given it represented a mere three per cent increase in water within the catchment, with the increased hardstand areas ‘unlikely to contribute at all’,” Mr Britton said. “Noosa Council recently completed several flood mitigation projects in priority areas where floodwaters had previously inun-

dated residents’ homes. These areas include Tewantin’s Daintree estate, Pomona’s Rifle Street and Ashgrove Drive at Cooroy. “While Noosa Council is aware of some flooding on Mr Miller’s property, Mr Miller’s house was built above the Q100 flood level of the time, and there is no record of the building ever having been inundated.” “However, Noosa Council will consider funding for new flood modelling for the Six Mile Creek catchment as part of upcoming budget discussions.” Mr Miller said Lake MacDonald residents met with now Mayor Tony

Wellington during the election campaign where he said Cr Wellington assured residents “he would look into the flooding issue”. “In upcoming budget discussions we will consider funding for new flood modelling to cover the Six Mile Creek catchment, which will include the Lake MacDonald area,” Cr Wellington said. “I made a pre-election commitment to establish a Lake MacDonald flood reference group to include residents of Lake MacDonald and we will begin establishing this group shortly.”

Anger over broiler farm By MEGAN OGLE A LOCAL community has rallied together to defend an appeal against a proposed chicken farm in Cooroy. No Broiler Farm Cooroy co-convenor and Cooroy Area Residents’ Association (CARA) president Rod Ritchie said community members had raised over $10,000 in just six weeks. “It didn’t take long to raise the funds because the local opposition to this appalling proposal is as strong as ever,” Mr Ritchie said. Mr Ritchie said the funds would be

used to assist co-respondents, Jennifer Sadler and Elizabeth Merritt, who will join Noosa Council to defend the appeal, as well as engage lawyer Michael Quirk. The appeal, made by W. Donald Milligan Pty Ltd to the Planning and Environment Court, was lodged late last year after an application to begin farming chickens on rural land was rejected by the Council. Mr Ritchie said the West Cooroy community “welcomed” the election of new Mayor Tony Wellington who he described as a “staunch opponent”

to the chicken farm proposal. Mr Ritchie also said he approached prospective Council candidates prior to the election for a commitment to defend the appeal. “Before the election we asked prospective Councillor candidates for a pre-poll commitment to fully support the resolve and intention of the outgoing Council to defend this appeal in the best way possible,” Mr Ritchie said. “All elected councillors, except Councillor Frank Pardon and Coun-

cillor Jess Glasgow, replied in the affirmative.” Cr Pardon said the question was “pointless” as he had voted to defend the appeal while serving on the previous Council. Cr Glasgow declined to comment. Newly-elected Councillor Ingrid Jackson said she was approached by Mr Ritchie during the election campaign and had responded that she would support the Council defending its decision, however, was reluctant to comment further on the issue as the matter is before the court.

Teachers help Nepalese quake victims NOOSA District State High School (NDSHS) teachers Bridge Muir and Brad Huggins joined other local teachers in a volunteer effort to assist an earthquake damaged Nepalese school Shree Panch Pokhari Primary over the Easter school holidays. The NDSHS community followed the impact of last year’s Nepalese earthquakes very closely as former NDSHS LOTE and humanities teacher Kate Miles was living and working in Kathmandu at the time of the magnitude 7.8 quake. Nepalese students studying at the University of the Sunshine Coast visited NDSHS shortly after the earthquake in May last year, and addressed a full school parade, speaking about their families’ plights and appealed to the students’ for empathy and support. The NDSHS community rallied behind the Nepalese with free dress days and pancake stalls set up to raise funds for the Shree Panch Pokhari Primary School Rebuild Project; a school-based community knitting group was established to create bean-

ies and scarves for the Nepalese; and staff, students and parents provided donations of school resources and toys for Nepal. The Shree Panch Pokhari Primary School Rebuild Project was co-ordinated by Ms Miles, who made contact with NDSHS for assistance with her volunteer project. Teachers Ms Muir and Mr Huggins met up with Ms Miles in Nepal over the Easter holidays and spent three days at Shree Panch Pokhari Primary School assisting with the delivery and implementation of donated resources, teacher training, English tuition and building a new classroom for the damaged school. Shree Panch Pokhari Primary School staff and students were most appreciative of the donated school resources as well as interacting with the Australian teachers, learning about Australian animals, songs, dances and playing with Lego and playdough for the first time. FOR many of us, the final resting place of a loved one holds great significance and for those with an affinity to the sea there is now an easy way to spread their ashes thanks to the Noosa Coast Guard. When they’re not busy saving lives, the Noosa Coast Guard offers a caring service that takes families and friends out to sea to scatter the ashes of a loved one. Noosa local, Paulette Gee, recently used the service to spread the ashes of her brother-in-law. “After my sister’s husband died at Christmas we planned to scatter his ashes at sea,” she said.

“Someone suggested we ask the Coast Guard, so a couple of Sundays ago, ten of us set sail from Munna Point in the Noosa River in two Coast Guard boats.” Ms Gee said the Coast Guard volunteers were very attentive and respectful throughout the experience. “It was a great way to farewell a loved one,” she said. “We got to scatter the ashes at sea while the Coast Guard volunteers got to practise their skills.” Anyone is welcome to use the Coast Guard service to scatter ashes for a fee of $300,

which helps maintain the lifesaving equipment and pays for the fuel used when travelling to a site. A plaque to commemorate a loved one can be bought for an extra $1200 and will be placed on the Coast Guard’s special memorial wall at Munna Point. “I would recommend this service to anyone,” Ms Gee said. Reusing and reducing waste From Page 1 “There are a lot of businesses, groups and residents who help each other to do their part for the environment here in Noosa,” Mr Wood said. “Businesses will donate reusable waste to residents or community groups as well as other initiatives within the community.” Local business owners Justin and Michelle Warrick of Little Cove Coffee Co, said they reduce their waste by donating coffee grind to local residents as well as donating coffee sacks to the local Boomerang Bag collective. “We’re often approached by locals who want to use the coffee sacks for all sorts of things and we’re happy they are able to be reused,” Justin said. “We also reduce waste by donating coffee grind to local residents.” One resident to benefit from the donation is Joe Shlegeris, who said he uses the coffee grind, with the help of his chickens, to reinvigorate the soil on his property. Boomerang Bag project manager Desiree Gralton said she also benefits from generous donations from community members and local businesses. “The Boomerang Bag initiative is a positive alternative to the single-use plastic bags when you’re out shopping,” Desiree said. “If you forget your reusable bags then you can just pick up one of the Boomerang Bags and bring it back the next time you shop. “Just like Noosa, we run on community spirit and volunteers.” Noosa Council has recently released a Waste Reduction and Recycling Draft Plan 2016 - 2024. Vote under investigation By MEGAN OGLE CONTROVERSY surrounds new Noosa Mayor Tony Wellington as an investigation into alleged dodgy polling booth antics are being investigated by the Electoral Commission of Queensland (ECQ). The ECQ has confirmed a complaint was received by unsuccessful candidate Ken Coleman outlining the alleged interference of voters by Cr Wellington and his supporters, saying candidates were disadvantaged by the incident. The ECQ has confirmed the complaint will be investigated. Mr Coleman alleges Cr Wellington “intercepted” voters in the carpark of the Noosa Christian Outreach Centre (NCOC) during pre-polling and directed them to the Returning Officer’s Production Avenue polling booth before they were able to receive how-to-vote cards from other candidates, a claim Cr Wellington denies. “No one was obstructed from approaching the Christian Outreach Centre at any time,” Cr Wellington said.

“There were occasions when prospective voters arrived at the Christian Outreach Centre, saw the long queue and then chose to drive away and not to vote. Some of these people were told that there was an alternative place they could go to do their voting.” Mr Coleman said many candidates who had witnessed the incident had complained to Noosa’s Returning Officer Colin Brown and on two separate occasions emails were sent to the candidates by Mr Brown with an order to cease the behaviour, saying it was “inappropriate” and obstructed voters. “It is not appropriate to stop electors from having the opportunity of obtaining that material,” Mr Brown said. “If people have strolled past all of you and then realise that the queue is really long, then and only then can you suggest that they may come to my office.” Cr Wellington said his campaign manager had received verification from Mr Brown that it was OK to refer voters to the Production Avenue site and said candidates had been

All candidates were told this. Both were legitimate polling places.”

Mr Coleman said he had refrained from commenting on the election process but felt it was “necessary” to speak out. “I do not do this lightly, I do not intend to cause controversy for the sake of it, nor do I wish personal gain from this situation,” Mr Coleman said. “I want it to be clear that I acknowledge my defeat in the polls and any action by any authority will not see me elected to Noosa Council, I do however have a strong sense of ethical justice, and a campaign commitment to common sense.” Mr Coleman said it was difficult to tell how many voters were denied how-to-vote cards by candidates due to the actions of Cr Wellington and his volunteers as he says Mr Brown was not made aware of the issue for some time. “This clearly disadvantaged those candidates with a lower public profile and may have swung the balance of voting away from a new candidate for council,” he said. However Cr Wellington said there was no advantage in sending a “handful” of voters to the Production

Avenue location as he claims other candidate’s volunteers were also present. Mr Coleman also called into question the rejection of rival candidate Elaine Williams' request for a recount saying “a doubt had been cast” over the election process. “During interviews on ABC radio today (1 April), a spokesperson for the ECQ said that they were “100 per cent satisfied“ that the counting of votes for the councillors election was accurate,” Mr Coleman said. “This is in spite of trialling a new counting method, having operational problems with the scanning equipment, various counting irregularities and the lodgement of at least two formal complaints to the Electoral Commission by candidates prior to the count being finished.” “What has not been considered by the commission is the fact that the actions of Mayor Wellington’s team affected the possible vote prior to voting taking place, and it was done in such a way as to deny the public the opportunity to cast an unprejudiced, informed ballot for the candidate of their choosing.”

Fiji recovery effort brings out our best IT’S been said many times, but maybe it’s time we heard it again. We live in one of the safest and most beautiful parts of the world. As we seem to be reminded all-too-often of late, that can change in a heartbeat. That was certainly the case on 19 February when Cyclone Winston tore through the islands of Fiji killing 44 people, flattening homes and destroying livelihoods of thousands more. The city of Laukota took the brunt of the storm and sits 24 kilometres north of Nadi. It sits in the largest sugar growing region and is the second largest port entry into Fiji. We all feared the worst when the images of roofless homes in village after village reached us but as our island neighbours 2700 kilometres to our north-west try to rebuild, members of our community have been busy listening to their needs. The Noosa Heads Lions Club got in touch with the Laukota Lions Club soon after communications were restored and while governments and international agencies have been generous with cash donations, the needs on the ground are building supplies, clothes, shoes and cotton blankets. Spurred into action, the club ap-

proached Pillow Talk at Noosa Civic and other partners to see how they could help. Fast forward a few weeks and Lions Graham Esdale and Stuart Greenough were joined by Bendigo Bank’s Wayne Hoens and Glen Elmes MP to gather 50 blankets from Chris Draper and Chaille L’Huillier. As luck would have it, the Catholic Churches in Brisbane had a container nearly ready to go, so the blankets will join that shipment to get to those who need it most. It’s a small part helping a small number of those Fijians on the long road back to the life they once knew, but isn’t it great when community works together to make great things happen? So, the next time you see the Noosa Heads Lions Club volunteers holding a sausage sizzle at Bunnings or at one of our many community events in Noosa in the coming months, stop by, make a donation if you can and say thanks for their work. ROAD safety is a two-way street, according to Noosa MP Glen Elmes who has praised the government’s decision to keep the safe cycling laws. Mr Elmes said the State Government’s decision to retain the “life-saving” laws following the two-year trial period will “provide more safety for Noosa cyclists and visitors to the region”. “Cyclists in Noosa will continue to have peace of mind while they ride thanks to the legacy of the former LNP Government,” he said. The safe cycling laws requires motorists to provide cyclists with a one metre gap when overtaking at speeds of 60km/h or less and 1.5 metres when travelling over 60km/h. When it is safe to do so, motorists are allowed to cross centre lines in order to allow for the one metre passing distance. The Palaszczuk Government announced the Safe Cycling laws were here to stay earlier this month following an independent review. Main Roads and Road Safety Minister Mark Bailey said the one-metre rule is intended to improve interactions between cyclists and motorists on Queensland roads by making motorists more aware of cyclists and encouraging them to leave enough space between their vehicle and the bicycle rider. Mr Bailey said the decision follows a recommendation from the Centre for Accident Research and Road Safety Queensland (CARRS-Q). “We commissioned CARRS-Q to independently evaluate the rule, in terms of its road safety benefits and practical implementation, to inform

the Palaszczuk Government’s decision - delivering on a 2015 election commitment.” he said. “The report found the rule has been very effective in improving motorists’ awareness of bicycle riders.” Since the start of the two-year trial, cyclists’ fatalities have declined with 13 deaths in 2013, nine deaths in 2014 and four in 2015. The announcement that the laws are to be made permanent comes after a horror month on local roads that saw a 60-year-old cyclist left with a fractured leg after a hit-and-run on Good Friday as well as the death of a 42-year-old father in March who died after being struck by a ute. Mr Elmes said while the safe cycling laws have helped reduce the number of cyclist fatalities in the two years since the trial began, it is important for cyclists and motorists to respect each other. “It’s a two-way street,” he said. “Road safety comes down to respect. People need to be up to speed on local laws. “We can draw a line on the road and colour it in but we need to rely on motorists and cyclists respecting the line on the road.” Mr Elmes said the LNP has worked hard to foster a great cycling culture, funding a significant portion of cycle ways in the region including a $577,000 upgrade to Gibson Road and Sunshine Beach cycle ways in 2013 and $357,500 that was used to upgrade a shared pathway along David Low Way in Sunshine Beach.

The Weyba Dog Park is frequented by many dogs daily as well as keen fishers, kayakers and families but a poisonous weed is causing concern for Bush Care group co-ordinator Phil Meade. “There are weeds present which are classified as toxic and poisonous to dogs including Singapore Daisy, Cassia Trees, Asparagus Fern, Morning Glory - Mile a Minute, Desmodium, and Umbrella Trees,” Mr Meade said. “The park is mowed on a weekly basis but the mower, dogs and people, transport the weeds which are prolific in number of species and density, to grow in other places.” Mr Meade said dogs are often seen rolling in the weeds which are known to cause skin irritations. “Dog owners would be very concerned that a main off leash dog park in Noosa presents these hidden serious hazards,” he said. “It is important that these weeds are removed for the safety of dogs, people and the environment.” Mr Meade plans to remove the weeds from the park and replace them with native ground cover and shrubs and is calling on the community to help by lending a hand during a planting day. Basket weaving for healing LOCAL artist Rene Bahloo is calling on the community to find their creative side in her latest project. Ms Bahloo, the creator of the Inside Outside installation in the Floating Land 2015 exhibition, has turned her focus to community awareness in her latest project. The Weave Heal Connected: Sculpting with Landcare Project aims to raise community awareness of the value of native and weed plants in the Noosa and district area, for creative use. Ms Bahloo is facilitating a series of sculptural basket weaving classes in Pomona in April, in order to create a giant basket. These donation-based workshops provide the opportunity for community members to learn how to prepare local fibres to create a sculpture for permanent display at Noosa Landcare in Pomona.

THE Queensland Police have confirmed there will be no more Segway patrols as the trial comes to an end. Senior Constable Pierre Senekal originally trialled the Segway when patrolling the Hastings Street beat before transferring to Kenilworth station. A police media statement released in March said Kenilworth locals could expect to see more of Senior Constable Senekal on the Segway and that the use of the Segway for patrols had been “really well received by locals”, but the use of the futuristic patrolling method has since been called off. Local media reports suggested the Segway trial was ended because there were “more crashes than anticipated”, but Sunshine Coast District Officer Darryl Johnson said no QPS members were injured while using the Segways. Costly stay NEXT time you see a moped parked in a full car parking space, don’t blame the rider. Blame the un-intelligence of Noosa Council. I was just issued with an $88 fine, friends have had the same, for parking a small moped off street in an allocated concrete, bicycle parking area that was empty. A Noosa Council parking officer instructed me to instead occupy an entire car space. Why is deadly fluoride being placed into the shire’s water without any public consultation or debate? Why is there not a separate small dog offleash area at the dog park in suburban Noosa Parklands? There are many families with children and small dogs who would love to feel safe using this lovely park also. Dance prodigy MEI Mei Tan, 13, is the newest star emerging from The Dance Centre Peregian Springs, and she has just landed her first role in a major dance production. Mei Mei will be member of the cast for Ballet Theatre of Queensland’s Cinderella which will be on stage at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre from 19 to 27 January 2017. Mei Mei was one of about 100 hopeful dancers who auditioned for roles and chosen above many others for her grace and outstanding ballet technique. Mei Mei has developed her talents by being a dedicated member of The Dance Centre Peregian Springs Vocational Programme and also by her participation in Australian Ballet School’s interstate program. This is the second year that Mei Mei has been selected for a coveted position in the ABS’s Interstate Program, and is becoming a highly polished dancer at a very young age. FOR newly appointed Boxing Queensland president Mark Evans, last week was indeed a good indicator of just what lies ahead. For Mark it all started with a quick trip on Friday night to Sandgate Bowls Club, where a team of six amateur boxers from his Impact Boxing Academy, in Cooroy, took part in a tournament. This was followed by a quick trip back home three hours sleep, pack a bag, drive to Brisbane then board a flight for Canberra. However the mad rush was eased knowing that five of his team who had fought in Sandgate came home victorious. The reason for the trip was to attend a two-day Members Association Forum organised and run by amateur boxing’s governing body, Boxing Australia. The purpose of the conference which was attended by all state presidents was to bring all delegates up to date on all aspects of the sport and to help create programs that will govern the future of the sport throughout the country. It was also a great opportunity for all state presidents to meet and discuss their various ideas and problems. Several members spoke of their inability to run school boy age tournaments as they are struggling with membership in this category. “For example, in the ACT they had a total of nine tournaments for the whole year, " Mark said. "Whereas in Queensland we have on average four or five a month. As

the conference progressed it became apparent that Queensland is indeed the leading state in the sport, and Boxing Australia was wrapt with the input from our state representatives.” While this was underway Sam Cameron-Hands and Bailey Seabourne also from Impact Boxing Academy, were attending an AIS training camp in Canberra - side by side with the Philippines Youth National Team and members of the Elite Australian Boxing Squad. During the conference, Mark spoke with Kevin Smith - Australia's head coach - and was informed that both boys were being watched as potential members to represent Australia at both the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in 2018 and the Tokyo Olympics in 2020. Other members of Impact are also on the short list to represent in Poland in May and Ireland in September. Also another international tournament on the program is the World Youth Championships to be contested in St Petersburg, Russia, in October. Closer to home the Australian Titles will be contested at Picnic Point, on the Gold Coast, starting on 11 May through to 15 May. With the outstanding potential now being shown by our local amateur boxers to represent at international level, now is the time for sponsorship deals supporting these athletes to be sought. The Canberra conference, training camps and attendance at international tournaments all come under the umbrella of a very positive five-year plan, aimed at bringing Australia in line with other countries.

New forum shows promise By MEGAN OGLE NOT swayed by an unsuccessful election campaign, a council candidate has vowed to fulfil his promises despite missing out on a position on the new Noosa Council. Local businessman Patrick Lloyd said he wouldn’t let his unsuccessful council bid deter him from keeping the promises he made during his campaign and said he planned to continue to “hold the council accountable”. In an attempt to “bring the community together” and fulfil his promise to “increase community consultation” Mr Lloyd has developed an online forum where residents are encouraged to post concerns and issues in regards to council issues.

Patrick Lloyd has vowed to keep his election promises.

“The forum is meant to be a safe space for people to get advice and support over issues and to come together to talk about shared concerns,” Mr Lloyd said. “To ensure users are also held accountable for their input, people will need to log in to the forum with their Facebook profile.” The website, noosa.space, is already up and running however Mr Lloyd said he was still in the process of refining the forum. “The website is up but I’m still trying to sort out the finer details of how the forum will work best,” he said. “I’ve never managed a forum before so if anyone was interested in being involved I would certainly like to hear from them.”

“The online forum isn’t designed to be a whinge fest, it’s designed to allow community members who need advice or support about certain issues relating to the council to jump on and post about their concerns,” Mr Lloyd said. “The council’s Have-YourSay forum allows the council to determine what issues are discussed; this forum will allow the public to determine what issues are important. “Other community members are then able to offer advice or information about the issue which helps people out and also creates a sense of community spirit.” Mr Lloyd said the online forum would be monitored by himself and that users would be required to log on through their Facebook profile.

Garden to kitchen skills By MEGAN OGLE STUDENTS at Kin Kin State School are cooking up a storm with produce grown from their very own garden. Students from Prep to Year 6 are turning seedlings into yummy lunches as they plant, harvest and prepare their very own homegrown food. Kin Kin State School principal Trent Shaw said the garden to kitchen program aligned with all subjects taught at the school and allowed the students to learn valuable skills. “The children learn great kitchen skills such as using knives properly,” Mr Shaw said. “They also learn a lot when they are in the garden, as well as learn about healthy lifestyles

and how to be a successful learner and productive citizen.” Students grow native and exotic produce such as lettuce, pumpkin and bananas and also collect eggs from the local chickens. “Our menus are worked around what is in the garden, but we always have a supply of lettuce and salad, plus herbs for cooking,” Mr Shaw said. “When we have an oversupply of something, we usually make a sauce or pickle them.” The Kin Kin Kid’s Kookaburra Kafe opens its doors each Friday at 1pm to community members, students, staff and parents who want to try the hand-picked food prepared by the students.

Feeling the beat KIDS and adults alike felt the rhythm at a special Zumba class held last week. Children with special needs and their siblings danced to the beat at the fun dance class held by Zumba teacher Sheryl Bingham at the Noosa Leisure Centre on Tuesday 5 April. “The kids were beaming as were the helpers and mums who took part,” Sheryl said. “The kids enjoyed following the steps as well as creating their own unique moves for a game based dance that was part of the class. “We certainly had some groovers The Zumba class was a hit with all participants having a great time. Backing Baroque A VERY special evening of chamber music will be held at the Butter Factory Arts Centre, 10 Maple Street, Cooroy, on Saturday 30 April at 6pm. FIGS are so enticing. Their colour and subtle flavour meld so well with so many ingredients, both sweet and savoury. Served simply with a drizzle of honey, or an elaborate tart, figs please both the eye and the palate. With winter not far away why not settle into the cooler months ahead with this delicious, and easy, fig and goat cheese tart. Ingredients

· 1 cup whole wheat digestive biscuits. · 1/2 cup melted coconut oil. · 1/4 tsp kosher salt.

· 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon. · 220 grams goat cheese. · 1 egg. · 1 egg yolk. · 1/2 tsp vanilla extract. · 1/4 cup honey, divided. · 10 figs. Directions 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. 2. Mix together digestive biscuit crumbs, coconut oil, salt and cinnamon. Press the crumbs into the bottom and slightly up the sides of an 8-inch tart pan.

3. Bake the crust for 7-10 minutes. 4. While crust is cooking, put the goat cheese, egg, egg yolk, vanilla, and 1 tbs of the honey in a bowl. Use a hand mixer to completely combine ingredients until you get a smooth creamy filling. 5. Remove crust from oven and pour the filling into it. 6. Bake for 18-20 minutes until the filling has set and crust is golden brown. 7.Cool completely and refrigerate at least one hour, until ready to serve. 8. Slice each fig into six wedges and arrange on the tart. Drizzle with the remaining 3 tbs of honey.

THE weather conditions earlier in the week were nothing short of exceptional, with boats of all sizes making their way across the bar to some outstanding fishing. Sunshine Reef has been fishing well with good catches of sweetlip, snapper, some nice coral trout, tuskfish, and longtail tuna. Micro jigs have been accounting for a great mixed bag of reefies as well as pelagics and Sunshine Reef is perfect for this style of fishing. A lot of anglers are starting to opt for an overhead style micro jigging outfit as they can detect bites easier on the drop and reengage the reel a lot quicker. North Reef has also seen some nice fish hitting the decks as well as pearl perch, snapper, tuskfish, Maori cod, sweetlip, longtail and yellowfin tuna along with Spanish and spotted mackerel. There’s been excellent numbers of tuna over the past week. Carrying a variety of size and type of lure is always a good idea when chasing tuna. A mixture of small metal slugs, micro jigs, soft plastics, poppers and stickbaits is ideal. Mackerel have been quite thick with good catches of spotted and Spanish mackerel coming from North Reef and Chardon’s Reef. Sounding up schools of fish and dropping metal slugs and micro jigs is a great way to entice a bite and can be very productive. Another great way to entice a bite is the good old-fashioned floater, a lightly weighted large pilchard or live bait drifted out in the current so that the bait will sit at mid-water will quiet often end up with a larger mackerel or wahoo. In the river there has been an exceptional number of whiting which have been a great target for the youngsters over the school holidays. Whiting are a relatively easy species to target and are quite safe

for the kids to handle because they have no real serious spikes. Live worms and yabbies have been the go-to baits with surface lures being the real stand out with the bigger fish. There has been heaps of trevally starting to make their way into the river and this should only continue to get better as winter approaches.

Some cracking mangrove jack have been landed around the sand bags and the rock wall at the river mouth. Flathead numbers are defiantly on the increase with more and larger females caught and released. This can only improve the population of the legal fish and improve the fishery as a whole.

The area upriver around the lakes has been one of the haunts as well as the deeper sections of the river down towards the mouth. The cooler water will start to infiltrate the river system over the next month and tailor and winter bream will turn up in numbers. Last winter was one of the beast seasons anglers have had in some time and this year should be no different.

ON Sunday the Noosa Heads SLSC held its quarterly club council meeting. This meeting was well attended and all aspects of club activities were reported. Acting president Barry Leek, in his opening remarks congratulated all patrolling members for their good work on maintaining a high standard of beach safety over the past season. “The school holidays have seen our beaches packed and our standard of patrolling has been good,” he said. Among the many reports for discussion was the progress at Peregian. This was tabled by Brett Leckie, the Peregian delegate. It was indeed very positive and all concerned are to be congratulated. Highlights contained within the report were; a complete review of the current beach patrol system. This is a step taken by clubs through our organisation at the end of every season; with beach visitation on the increase, it is now top of the list. The downstairs area of the club which houses all gear and equipment necessary for the day to day running of a surf club, has been upgraded and further development of the building is under discussion. Training courses covering all aspects of club life from Nippers to bronze medallion, patrol work and competition are being conducted on a weekly basis. "I am very happy with the situation. With the current forecast of a big population increase over the next couple of years, it is essential that the Peregian community be serviced by a club that has all state-of-the-art facilities required for the running a safe and well patrolled open beach. Over all, the progress in all aspects of our upgrading has been spot on. To all involved, many thanks,” Brett said. Regarding competition, Director of Surf Sports Peter French said, “Our results so far this season have been amongst our best ever;

Many thanks to our coaching staff, competitors, parents and support groups. As these are young members on their way up in the world of surf competition, they are to be encouraged and supported. Over the hill at Sunshine Beach, they too are in readiness for the Aussie Titles. Despite being one of our smallest clubs on the Sunshine Coast, they will be represented by some 40 competitors ranging in age from Under 14

to Masters. “Everyone is keen to go - our season so far has been outstanding. Our strength is in in our team events; in these we are not just winning but also setting some records along the way right up to state level. We have a great coaching panel and our results show just how good they are,” Coach Max Pettigrove said. “This will probably be our biggest team ever and all members are keen to do well in front of our home crowds,” Club President Craig Law added. Last Saturday morning the Noosa Seahorses were again very active with a big role up of Nippers, leaders and parents. Because of the

big beach crowds caused by the school holidays, parking facilities would have been a major problem had it not been for the incredible support of our local shire council. With their support it became possible to utilise part of the Lions Park as a pick-up point for parents and children. The families were then transported to Main Beach via the Noosa Surf Club bus, driven by volunteer lifesavers. Families are again reminded that because of the Australian Championships being held on the Sunshine Coast, there will be no Seahorse Nippers this weekend. However they will recommence on the following Saturday.

Sunshine Beach SLSC, which comes off the back of impressive finishes at Branch and State titles, will enter the competition with its biggest ever group of competitors. along with the solid performance of the Under 17, Under 19 and Open age groups will be complemented by the Masters group, which this year has seen numbers and results swell to amazing levels. Dan Moore, Director of Surf Sports at Sunshine, said that the success of the entire team has come from exceptional coaching and a culture of togetherness that is almost unique

within this amazing club. Last Sunday evening, almost 100 of Sunshine’s competitors and their families attended an Aussie Titles launch, where uniforms were presented to all team members. With Craig Law, president of Sunshine Beach SLSC, welcoming all attendees, the everyone was excited and confident moving into the final event of the year.

OVER 67 Noosa Boardrider Club (NBC) members competed in Round 3 of the local event at North Sunshine on Sunday 10 April, with another three competing across the country over the weekend. Star competitors included 17-year-old Connor Lyons who surfed the World Surf League (WSL) junior in Port Kembla and is looking to progress to the more professional ranks, plus a number of surfers competing in the Health Insurance Fund (HIF) Agnes Waters competition. Nine-year-old Landen Smales from Peregian Springs was the standout, winning the Under 10 division and then stepped up to take out the Under 12 division. Kalani Wulf, 16, one of the club's newest members, surfed up and took out the Premier Under 18 final. The NBC round had 25 events from the micro-grom divisions of the 8 and Under through to the strongly contested 16 and Unders. The strong turnout has cemented the NBC as one of the strongest junior surfing clubs on the Sunshine Coast. Not to be outdone, the senior club will commence its competition season on 14 May with Round 1 of the Shotgun Shootout. This series boasts a prize pool in excess of $4000. Next week will see four of the club's up-and-coming travel to Coffs Harbour for the biggest grom competition of the year. The Billabong OZ Grom Comp runs over six days and attracts surfers from all over Australia and a few from overseas. Harper Smales will contest the Under 8 Girls while Mitchell Peterson will contest the Under 8 and Under 10 Boys. Kelly’s last hurrah? STOP me if you’ve heard this one before, but it certainly seems like we might be seeing the final play-out of the greatest career in professional surfing history. Eleven-times world champion Kelly Slater has won just one heat in three events so far this year, and is languishing near the bottom of the rankings. Having won more than twice as many world titles as the next guy, and almost three times as many tour events (54) as the next guy, the question is how much losing can Kelly take before he calls stumps on his illustrious 25-year career? At 44, Kelly is more than twice the age of many of his tour rivals, including Italian teenager Leonardo Fioravanti, who sent him packing in Round 2 at the Drug Aware Margaret River Pro last week. While the idea of Kelly being beaten by a rookie who learnt to surf on the Mediterranean is a bitter pill to swallow, the facts are that young Leo is a class act who sharpened his talents at some of the best surf breaks in the world with Kelly at his side in Quiksilver team days. Kelly has moved on from Quik but at Margaret’s they were once again housemates. Must have been an interesting conversation over dinner after Kelly’s exit! Slater has reached the point in his career where he has absolutely nothing to prove to anyone, and even his mum Judy has suggested it’s time to call it quits. But I’ve watched all of his heats this year, and in my opinion he’s still capable of beating anyone on tour, and let’s not forget that he won the WQS Volcom Pipe Pro two months ago. He just hasn’t been putting good heats together, and he’s been meeting some fired-up rookies in the early rounds, like Lennox’s Stu Kennedy at Snapper Rocks, and Leo in WA. Guys like Stu and Leo know that beating Kelly is a huge stepping stone to fame, and they have nothing to lose, so understandably they go out there and surf like there is no tomorrow, whereas in fact it seems likely that there will be very few tomorrows for Kelly Slater. Kelly has quit the tour before, of course, most notably after his sixth world title in 1998, when he took a year off and went on the Quiksilver Crossing adventures. He got bored pretty quickly and came back renewed and dangerous, and went on to almost double his trophy tally in the new century. But that was then and this is now, and there are a few major differences. His advanced age, for starters. No one else has won world tour events in their forties, and generational change is happening all around Slater right now. Mick Fanning has called time out and may not come back, and Taj Burrow announced his retirement at Margaret River last weekend, before going down to the much younger Nat Young. Mick

And how much longer will the injured Bede Durbidge (33) and Joel Parkinson (35) be on tour? Kelly must be wondering if he really wants to be the last man standing. And there’s another factor – judge fatigue. Slater is still capable of landing a huge punt or carving a critical line or getting deeper in the barrel than almost anyone, but some of his go-to moves are just not getting scored the way they used to. At Margaret River in the two heats

he surfed, he was scored down for a top turn cover up tube and his signature foam climb carving 360-degree turn. I thought both those waves were brilliant, but you could almost hear the judges yawning as they punched in their scores. I think Kelly will pull the pin this year, but I very much doubt that he wants to go out at the bottom of the rankings. I think we can expect some fireworks when the tour hits Cloudbreak, Chopes and J-Bay over the next few months, and then that announcement that we hoped would never come. Still Crawling Speaking of veterans who should never retire, we caught James Reyne’s set supporting Chris Isaak as the guests of Sirromet Wines at the Day On The Green at their Mount Cotton winery in Brisbane last Sunday. I can’t remember the last time I heard Jimmy live, but if anything he’s gotten better with age. He doesn’t get much change out of 60 these days, but as he worked through the Australian Crawl

catalogue, I was transported back more than 30 years to concerts like the one at Bells Beach the year that Crawl actually co-sponsored the pro event. The Crawl were way ahead of their time, and not surprisingly, the songs all stand the test of time. But so does Jimmy Reyne. I wonder if he still surfs. Back in the day, he wasn’t bad, but the really keen surfers in the band were guitarists Brad Robinson and Guy McDonagh, both of them sadly dead way too young. I surfed with them a bit in those years, in Sydney and in Victoria, and Peter Crawford and I once did a shoot in the water at Whale Beach for a magazine feature. When their manager looked at the shots on the lightbox, it was decided that Brad and Guy would cover the action, while James looked considerably better walking along the beach. But hey, the boy could sing! Still can. I really didn’t want his set to end, but then again, Chris Isaak was brilliant, and hilarious to boot. Thanks Sirromet.

Coaching sessions are the Real deal MORE than 190 talented boys and girls kicked more than goals at a free football coaching clinic held in Noosa by the world famous football club Real Madrid last week. One hundred and fifty kids between the ages of six and 16 were put through their paces by Spanish coaches from the club over four days plus a further 40 children from two Queensland charities tried their hand ... err, foot, at soccer on Friday 8 April as part of The Kick Project and Welcome to Australia project.

The Kick Project Founder James Rose said the sessions were a great opportunity for children who don’t get many ‘free kicks’ in life. “These kids have seen plenty of strife and been challenged in ways many of us couldn’t imagine,” he said. “The coaching clinics were a chance for them to shine and perhaps to make progress on the path to personal development and self-confidence as young adults, through playing sport.”

Swimmers lap it up NOOSA Aquatic Centre (NAC) swim coach Jan Croft is no stranger to winning. The NAC’s resident super fish recently netted three gold, four silver, one bronze and picked up a state record in the 1500 metre freestyle at the Masters State Long Course Championships.
