Wrong number By ALANA MITCHELSON SEVERAL Pakenham arcade shop owners and neighbouring Main Street businesses have complained to Telstra after their phone lines became crossed. Stores at both the Centre Court and Pakenham Plaza arcades were without a phone line and some also without internet or Eftpos during works for the National Broadband Network. The disruption began on the morning of Saturday 26 March when Chemist Warehouse staff realised they were not receiving calls the day after they had just opened their new Main Street store. Later a toy store received calls intended for the acupuncture clinic, while the clinic received calls meant for one of the hairdressing salons. One of the other businesses affected was the law firm owned by Cardinia shire councillor Kate Lempriere’s husband. She said the implications for a legal firm were particularly “outrageous” as the calls concerned private legal matters such as settlements. “It’s just hell. You call up and you get put through to the Philippines,” she said. “Offshore telemarketing for our major companies is crazy because there’s no duty of care. “They told me it must be an issue with our modem but there are lines going in all different directions. It’s just madness.” Pharmacist in charge at Chemist Warehouse Simon Mikhail said: “It was intermittent. I tried dialling the number and it just rang out. “It’s a big deal. We receive five to six calls per hour and people calling in about prescriptions.
“We were unaware other stores have also been affected.” DK Nails salon owner Khoa Nguyen said his Eftpos machine had been “really slow”. “It took 10 to 15 minutes to process and then sometimes it would automatically decline. “Some customers in a hurry were not happy that they had to go and withdraw money to pay in cash.” A Centre Court arcade business owner who asked not to be named said that she was without a phone line for 48 hours between Tuesday and Thursday. “People call up to check that we’re open and if the line was dialling out, then they would have assumed we were closed,” she said. “I’m not sure how much money I’ve lost.” A Telstra spokesperson said the company recently engaged contractors to convert cabling in the arcades in preparation for the NBN. Some of this work involved rearranging the cabling in the street, the spokesperson said. “Due to erroneous records of the cabling that fed into the arcade, some customers experienced a disruption to their service,” he said. “After we became aware of the disruption we worked quickly to fix the issue. “We have had a contractor visit every shop in the arcade to check with customers that their service was working. All services were confirmed to be back on Thursday morning.” Telstra apologised for the disruption caused to customers. The incident came shortly after Telstra customers were struck with the third nationwide network outage within the past two months.

Cyclist struck in hit-run POLICE are continuing their search for a driver wanted in a reported hit and run which left a cyclist in Pakenham with serious injuries. The 20-year-old man was riding his push bike east along Bald Hill Road when he was hit by a car travelling in the same direction about 10.10am on Monday 4 April. Police and paramedics arrived on the scene to treat the man who was suffering from serious injuries as a result of the collision. He was taken by road ambulance to hospital. Witnesses told police that the offending driver fled the scene soon after the collision. Police are yet to locate the driver or the car involved. Anyone a with information about the incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

A COMMITTED group of local history sleuths has again been busy digging up details of Anzac heroes in preparation for a cemetery tour. Members of the Narre Warren Family History Group have been working overtime at Pakenham Cemetery over the past few months to uncover the stories behind those who served in World War One. They will take interested people through their journey on Sunday 17 April when they host a war cemetery walk. They held a similar event at Berwick Cemetery last year in the lead-up to the Anzac Centenary. In their research they discovered that Brigadier General Cecil Henry Foott had lain in the cemetery for 70 years in an unmarked grave. With the help of the Berwick RSL, the local cemetery trust and Cameo Memorials, they rectified that situation, a gesture that brought many group members to tears. Group member Jane Rivett-Carnac said there were no hidden Brigadier Generals at Pakenham, but their work did uncover a myriad of inspirational and sad tales. “We have a nurse, a sailor, two Aboriginal soldiers, two POWs, men who put their age up and others who put their age down, a mother who collapsed when told of her son’s death and died 15 days later, a father and son who enlisted and 23 sets of brothers,” she said. “We found 64 families who supported 120 men and one woman as they enlisted. “Four of these men did not complete basic training due to medical reasons, 24 families sent two or more sons to the front and three of these families sent four or more sons.” Of the 120 remembered at Pakenham Cemetery, 30 died while on service overseas. The first to die was Private E T Bryan at Lone Pine, Gallipoli, on 24 June 1915. Another 18 died in France, one at Gallipoli, eight in Belgium, two in Egypt and one in England. Fifty-four were wounded, and eight wounded several times. One soldier, Private W Smith, was wounded four times. Those who returned had many and varied experiences during their service and upon their return 16 took up soldier settlement blocks and 11 went on to reenlist for World War Two. The Sacrifice and Patriotism - World War One Walk in Pakenham Cemetery will start at 10am on Sunday 17 April, with a charge of $5 per adult, payable on the day. The walk runs for about 90 minutes. Soul Hunter’s a prized art By ALANA MITCHELSON AN AWARD-WINNING Pakenham artist has bagged an $800 prize at the Casey-Cardinia Grand Art Show. Elena Kolotusha’s drawing, Soul Hunter, depicts a greyhound gazing up at an airborne paper crane, incorporating a combination of colour pencils, pastels and guasch with a grey-scale tone. Being the 45-year-old’s first work of the New Year, it portrays symbols of hope, happiness and identity. But the artist prefers not to give too much of her personal interpretation away. “I think that would distract people from forming their own ideas and their own interpretation of the work," Kolotusha said. “It took me one month to think about all the different elements. You have to be inspired first, but then once you begin, the artwork can become a bit like a life of its own. “I often like to draw objects that have a history and carry memories. I like works that have a simple composition but are very meaningful." Casey-Cardinia Grand Art Show featured a fine selection of art from leading artists not only from Victoria, but also New South Wales and Tasmania. The Berwick District woodworkers club displayed creative wood art from across Victoria, including several large rocking horses. Born in Russia, Kolotusha found it difficult adjusting to her new lifestyle in Australia, and it took a number of years before she built the confidence to continue pursuing her art, holding her first exhibition in 2004. She said her art was beginning to blend her two favourite styles - still life and animal portraits - and that her ap-

a series of works with similar subject matter and style to Soul Hunter. She has already completed a second work

tense" work as she prepares for a solo exhibition in August at AGRA Gallery, Camberwell.

fore vets were forced to sedate and shave him. “They had him in a humidicrib and he had to stay in overnight because they were concerned about the fumes and if he had digested any which could cause liver and respiratory damage,” Ms Hansen said. The incident was reported as deliberate by vets at the centre. Vets advised Ms Hansen that her beloved Scottish Fold had been picked up and dipped in the oil, due to the precise point under his armpits. Ms Hansen was quick to report the distressing cruelty to her local police station, who told her they were “shocked”. “The police officer was interested because our area is so quiet; they said we just don’t hear a peep out of your area.” Since the torturing and possible attempted killing, Ms

WHEN Lisa Hansen let her Scottish Fold cat outside her Berwick home for 20 minutes, she didn’t expect him to return soaked and dripping in engine oil. In a shocking case of animal cruelty - following the sickening butchering of two kangaroos and an unborn joey in Lysterfield South last month - Ms Hansen said she was “frightened”. “I was totally devastated, it was very distressing and upsetting,” Ms Hansen said. “Just the thought that we are living near someone who could deliberately hurt such a vulnerable animal.” One year old Migs the cat was drenched in engine oil within a 20 minute window on Wednesday 23 March. Vets at the Animal Emergency Centre in Hallam believe he was picked up and dunked. “I rushed him to the emergency department, my skin was burning from touching him so you can imagine what it was doing to his skin,” Ms Hansen said. “The vets said they had seen it before and that there was no way he could have rolled in it to have been covered that badly.” The oil was so thick that Migs was bathed six times, be-
Hansen has taken to her “quiet” street to alert locals. “I went door knocking and everyone we saw, apart from our direct neighbours, didn’t even know we had two cats and two dogs,” Ms Hansen said. It is routine for Ms Hansen to let her dogs and Migs outside at 8.45pm each night. And this was the first time Ms Hansen had experienced animal cruelty in a street she has lived in for 25 years. “Cats shouldn’t be in neighbours’ yards anyway but that doesn’t excuse animal cruelty, we do follow council rules and we are doing our best,” Ms Hansen said. “I take responsibility for my cat, they shouldn’t be on other people’s property but neighbours should come and talk to us, animal cruelty is never acceptable. “I hope it’s not the first of more to come.” The heartless act of animal cruelty left Ms Hansen with a $600 vet bill and a much more timid cat. “We are looking at getting a cat run and Migs is a lot clingier,” she said. “It’s scary to think someone who lives in the area has done this because he was out for such a short time, it had to have happened somewhere local, by someone local.”

Barking up the wrong tree COMPLAINT Registered (Cranbourne News, 31 March 2016) suggests council has increased animal registrations by stealth. This is certainly not the case, with the fee increase being considered at a public council meeting on 15 December 2015. Council provides services for the 31,700 dogs and 8700 cats who reside in the municipality, including delivering pound services, collecting lost and wandering pets, investigating and prosecuting dog attacks and animal cruelty, providing microchipping days and maintaining animal welfare standards. The costs of delivering animal management services continue to increase so it has been necessary to raise the cost of animal registration by an average of 13 per cent in 2016. It is also worth noting that part of the registration fee is a levy that council collects on behalf of the State Government. Cr Sam Aziz, City of Casey Mayor.

A PASSION handed down from his father will have Kurt Dunham travelling the world as a professional snooker player. Kurt, from Lynbrook, has been lining up shots under the watchful eye of his old man, Rod Dunham, since he was eight years old. “Dad has played in national championships for Victoria and Tasmania - he’s been like my coach,” Kurt said. Kurt was handed a two year tour card after winning the 2016 Oceania Snooker Championship in Sydney and will leave for Cambridge, England to start his professional career in May. The 24-year-old will be one of 128 snooker professionals in the world. “It’s cutthroat,” he said. “But it was always my dream growing up, but it’s not very big in Australia and it’s hard to get sponsorship.” In the lead-up to his first tournament in late May, Kurt will be practicing five to six hours a day. “I might look at getting a coach once I’m over there - I’m most excited about the atmosphere and the professionalism, they have purpose-built stadiums and live audiences of a couple thousand,” he said. “I may even get on Fox Sports in Australia.”

THE Narre Warren Rotary Club is turning 40. The Rotary Club of Narre Warren will celebrate its 40th birthday at a special event to be held at the Clover Cottage restaurant in Berwick on Thursday 14 April. President Lyn Pickering said the whole group was looking forward to the special evening. “We are quite excited,” she said. “It’s a big milestone to get to 40, and to still be functioning and operating in our local com-
munity, and in the international community.” Last June, the club’s president-elect Bruce Armstrong suffered a heart attack, just days before the club’s changeover dinner and was unable to take on the role in his weakened state. Lyn has been familiar with Rotary ever since her husband and past president, Ian, joined the group in the 1980s, but only agreed to get on board after encouragement from close friend Marion Mason in 2007. Marion was touted as the group’s first female president
before tragedy struck. “My more personal involvement began in 2007 when my good friend Marion Mason took me to dinner at Miss Marples, and told me that I had to join Rotary so that I could be on her board,” Lyn told the guests at a changeover dinner in 2014. “I joined Rotary not long after this but, sadly, Marion did not have the opportunity to be our first female president as we lost her to breast cancer. “I stand here tonight with many mixed emotions, knowing that she is probably watching over my right shoulder.”

Ruby celebrations for Rotary By LACHLAN MOORHEAD THE Narre Warren Rotary Club is turning 40. The Rotary Club of Narre Warren will celebrate its 40th birthday at a special event to be held at the Clover Cottage restaurant in Berwick on Thursday 14 April. President Lyn Pickering said the whole group was looking forward to the special evening. “We are quite excited,” she said. “It’s a big milestone to get to 40, and to still be functioning and operating in our local com-
munity, and in the international community.” Last June, the club’s president-elect Bruce Armstrong suffered a heart attack, just days before the club’s changeover dinner and was unable to take on the role in his weakened state. Lyn has been familiar with Rotary ever since her husband and past president, Ian, joined the group in the 1980s, but only agreed to get on board after encouragement from close friend Marion Mason in 2007. Marion was touted as the group’s first female president
before tragedy struck. “My more personal involvement began in 2007 when my good friend Marion Mason took me to dinner at Miss Marples, and told me that I had to join Rotary so that I could be on her board,” Lyn told the guests at a changeover dinner in 2014. “I joined Rotary not long after this but, sadly, Marion did not have the opportunity to be our first female president as we lost her to breast cancer. “I stand here tonight with many mixed emotions, knowing that she is probably watching over my right shoulder.”

A RARE bird species could be making a comeback to Berwick. Preparations are underway to re-introduce the rare Helmeted Honeyeater species back into the Berwick and Beaconsfield areas, with a team of professionals from Parks Victoria and Zoos Victoria conducting a preliminary assessment of the region on Monday 4 April. The Berwick and Beaconsfield region served as the natural home of the Helmeted Honeyeater up until the Ash Wednesday bushfires, when their habitat was destroyed. But now, more than 30 years later, the local branch of the Australian Plants Society was joined by the professional team to evaluate sites in Casey that the honeyeater could once again be introduced to. After three decades, the rare bird species has grown to the point of being able be to reintroduced. Alex Smart, a member of the Australian Plant Society’s Wilson Park Berwick branch, said the region was being assessed for a “trial” at this stage, but he said he was hopeful the rare bird species could make a welcome return to the region. “The assessors were most impressed with Cardinia Creek, from the Cardinia Creek park-

Try your hand at careers THE South East Try-a-Trade and Careers Expo helps answer the age-old question - what do you want to be when you grow up? The special annual careers expo will take place on Tuesday 19 April at the Cranbourne Racing Complex, with thousands of eager young people expected to turn out to the event. The exhibition is organised by the South East Local Learning and Employment Network (SELLEN), supported by several sponsors including the Casey Cardinia Region and Star News Group. It aims to provide more local job opportunities for young people. More than 2000 students are expected at this month’s event, which will be the eighth annual Try-a-Trade. “It’s one of the big flagship events for the region when it comes to careers,” SELLEN CEO Andrew Simmons said. Trades on display include carpentry, plumbing, tiling, bricklaying, painting, hair and beauty, engineering and many others. In addition to hands-on practical components at the expo, the event also allows students the opportunity to talk to qualified tradespeople and career advisers about the different occupations and pathways available. “It’s an opportunity for young people to have a look at and actually get their hands dirty,” Mr Simmons said. “If they’re thinking about being a bricklayer, they can talk to brick layers and come and lay some bricks.” Mr Simmons said there would 70 different trade and career options to choose from at the expo. “Come on down and explore your

A PROGRESSIVE and new culinary learning centre, Silk Education and Training, is building industry-ready chefs, bakers, kitchen hands and entrepreneurs from its Cranbourne hub. The vocational education and training centre has been operating from the Cranbourne commercial kitchen for almost 12 months. Offering an extensive range of certificates from commercial cookery to hospitality, Silk also provides day courses for immediate entry level jobs. Silk training manager Georgina Hamilton said locals were able to book in for accredited and non-accredited courses. “We run a one day food handling course and first aid course, as well as skills courses like latte art, cupcake making and food plating which aren’t accredited,” Georgina said. But it’s Silk’s ability to offer adaptable courses with highly skilled professional trainers that sets it apart. “All of our trainers are current in the industry, they eat, breath and sleep hospitality and some still work in the industry outside of their teaching,“ she said. “This means once our students graduate, they have current skills and knowledge that can be applied immediately.
“Our trainers are very adaptable and able to tailor classes to meet the needs of their students and a lot of out our students already work in the industry and come to us to grow their skills in a certain area.” Silk’s state of the art Cranbourne kitchen is its latest to open in Melbourne, with facilities also available in North Melbourne and a soon to open training kitchen in South Melbourne. With 800 students across the state, Cranbourne currently has around 100 students listed but Georgina hopes that number will grow. “We have trainees aged from 18 to 60 and we hold 16 students in each class, so they are nice and small,” she said. “Silk has been around for five years, we are very young and taking the industry by storm in hospitality training.” The organisation also has access to offshore kitchens and puts their students through on the job experience in Melbourne restaurants, cafes and hospitality establishments. But it’s their “feel good” work which Ms Hamilton holds dear. “We ran a course for disadvantaged people in India, they came from villages to Deli and received Silk training in hospitality, before the course was finished some had landed jobs in hotels.”

Andy plans for the future By JARROD POTTER TOMORROW matters as much as today for newly announced Pakenham United senior coach Andy Neill. Although Neill thought he’d only coach the Cougars’ FFV State League 5 South reserves team in 2016, circumstances arose as former coach Mario Hili vacated the position a couple of weeks ago. With State League soccer coaching experience at Casey Panthers, amid a lifetime on the sidelines throughout England and Australia, Neill was tapped on the shoulder and asked to become the club’s inaugural State League senior coach. “My principal role was to sort out the reserves side for State League under the auspices of Mario, who was then the senior coach,” Neill said. “I don’t really know what really went on with the seniors and what went on there, but only two or three weeks ago the coach decided to call it a day and I was co-opted to step up to become the senior coach and ressies coach as well.” He’s coached throughout south east Victoria but Neill is ready to make his new home-town Pakenham into a powerhouse. But it’s not just the first side trickling downwards; if anything Neill is pushing the club from the bottom up, starting with the tiniest Cougars who will one day inherit United and the phenomenal facility that is IYU Recreation Reserve in Henry Road. “I think Pakenham will be a massive resource for very good players,” Neill said. “In 10 years’ time I don’t want this team, with the facility we

be that team and if we don’t start getting that right now – then it will never happen.” Neill wants senior success in the medium-tolong term, but is pushing full tilt to see the juniors primed and ready to rise through the ranks along the way.
“I’m all about bringing youth through, growing teams rather than importing all the best,” Neill said. “We might not be picking up any big honours for the next five to six years, but in eight to 10 years, yes we will. “That’s going to be the philosophy – I started off coaching Under 6s and I really want the club to push behind that.” With the $14 million soccer-super complex IYU Recreation Reserve on the cusp of completion, Neill knows the local community will bang down the door for a chance to play there and the club needs to be prepared for the future, which is approaching rapidly. The club has its first major sponsor of 2016 - First National Real Estate – and hopes to get a few more local businesses on board to back the Cougars from the start of life in FFV State League. All roads lead to Saturday in the meantime, as Pakenham United is set and ready for its debut State League 5 South clash held Saturday at 3pm against White Star Dandenong at Cardinia Recreation Reserve. “I don’t see many problems with the 45 players I’ve got at the moment,” Neill said. “I’d say with the 15 senior players I’ve got at the moment, I don’t see any reason why we shouldn’t come in the top three this year, but it’s whether I’ve had enough time to get into them. “Even if we finish poorly, as long as we finish off the season strongly that’s all that counts.”

The lighting project includes 4 kilometres of trenching and 150,000 metres of electrical cabling with the infrastructure powered by four diesel generators capable of supplying 2.75 megawatts. Country Racing Victoria CEO Scott Whiteman said introducing night racing to a premier regional venue was a significant step forward for country racing. “The Cardinia Shire has already shown their great support for the club’s vision and progress and I’m confident that the night racing fixture at Racing. com Park will provide the locals with a mix of entertainment options for the whole family,“ Mr Whiteman said. The Ignite Fire Show will entertain crowds alongside a host of kids’ activities includ-
ing face painting, animal farm swing chairs and carnival sideshows. Thursday’s race meeting is the first of the inaugural bet365 Night Racing Season which will continue with six meetings during the 2015-16 racing season, that being Thursdays 14, 21 and 28 April and 12, 19 and 26 May. The inaugural meeting will be held on the turf track with the remainder of meetings held this season on the Polytrack. Gates open at 4.30pm on Thursday with the first race at 6pm. The Club encourages all patrons to catch the free shuttle bus service which departs from Cardinia Club, Pakenham and Tynong train stations. CARDINIA champion Dwayne Doig and Pakenham’s gun all-rounder Chris Smith look set for a thrilling battle when the Terry Stephenson Medal count takes place at the Kooweerup Community Centre on Friday night. Doig’s mesmerising offspin claimed an incredible 50 wickets for the season while Smith’s 786 runs were accompanied by 23 scalps. Smith will look to join his Pakenham premiership-winning team-mate Russell Lehman as a Terry Stephenson Medallist, with Lehman the current holder of the West Gippsland Cricket Association’s topindividual prize. Other likely contenders include Merinda Park’s Danny Diwell, Upper Beaconsfield’s Scott Pitcher, Kooweerup’s Jess Mathers and Tooradin’s Tom Hussey. In great news for the WGCA, former Kooweerup youngster and now Dandenong quick Adam McMaster claimed Cricket Victoria’s Future Star Award at last Friday night’s awards at Eureka 89. Warriors’ bright eyes on future By RUSSELL BENNETT ALL three of the Pakenham Warriors’ Big V basketball teams are coming off weekends to forget, but there is still no shortage of positive signs moving forward. Jeff Reid’s Division 2 men’s side showed plenty in the first half against Mornington leading 36-31 at half-time at Cardinia Life on Sunday afternoon. But the home side was over-run over the final two quarters - outscored 44-21 to go down by 18 points, 75-57. The Warriors shot just 20 per cent from the field in the final quarter, in comparison to a stellar 55 per cent from the Breakers. Reid’s side was comprehensively beaten on the glass (54-41) and gave up a series of costly turnovers that led to open baskets by the Breakers in the second half. Hayden Davey had a stellar game for the Warriors with 20 points, 10 rebounds and three steals, but like many of his team mates his shot refused to drop. The Warriors’ commitment and endeavour couldn’t be questioned in the physical contest, but their execution let them down. Adam Ballinger was sensational for Mornington with 29 points (on 55 per cent shooting), 18 rebounds and three blocks, while Matthew Van Dykhuizen also poured in 20 points.
In the Division 2 women’s clash - the Casey-Cardinia derby between the Casey Cavaliers and the Warriors - Pakenham recovered from scoring just four points in the opening term to go down gallantly 69-46. For the Cavaliers, Tarryn Wilkin finished with a big 11-point, 15-rebound double-double while Ruchelle McCracken led the team in scoring with 16 points on 50 per cent shooting. Pakenham’s Youth League Division 2 men’s side played two games in Round 2 - a hard-fought 93-84 loss to Chelsea at the Patterson River stadium on Saturday night, and a 22-point loss at home the following afternoon to Mornington - 74-52. Pakenham had its chances in the Chelsea game - taking a handy lead into half-time, before being over-run in the second half. James Magrath (22 points), Lee Belton and James Till (17 points apiece), and Lewis Newman (13 points and 15 rebounds) spread the scoring load in a promising sign of things to come for the young Pakenham side. This weekend the Division 2 men’s side heads to Oakleigh in a battle of the Warriors on Saturday night; the women’s side hosts Mornington - also on Saturday night, and the Youth League men’s side will face off against Corio Bay in the curtain-raiser to that clash - beginning at Pakenham at 5pm.

THE Pakenham Silverbacks’ women’s and junior sides will look to bounce back quickly after a pair of defeats on the weekend in Gridiron Victoria competition. The Silverbacks’ juniors hosted the curtainraiser at Heatherbrae Reserve in Officer on Sunday morning and put up one hell of a fight, before eventually falling by eight points - 20-12 - against the Northern Raiders, one of the competition’s pace-setters. In the afternoon game, the Melton Wolves were particularly impressive in their 42-20 defeat of Pakenham. But, promisingly for the Silverbacks, they’ve already shown the ability to put points on the board in what is still very much the team’s infancy. This Sunday the Silverbacks’ juniors head to Sydney Pargeter Reserve in Endeavour Hills to face off against their local rivals, the Berwick Miners, on Rawling Field. The game kicks off at 10am.
