Police were out in force over the four-day weekend to prevent serious crashes or trauma. A 22-year-old Cranbourne North man tested positive for methamphetamines after being stopped by police for driving erratically on the Princes Highway, Pakenham, at 1.30pm on Easter Sunday. And police are still working to ascertain if the driver of a vehicle which rolled several times was affected by drugs or alcohol. The 30-year-old male Pakenham driver was made to undergo drug and alcohol testing following the morning crash on Easter Monday on the Kooweerup Bypass. He admitted to getting behind the wheel with just two hours sleep. Wheelie bins that were thrown at vehicles from two Pakenham overpasses could have resulted in serious crashes, even fatalities, according to police. One vehicle was damaged after a bin was dropped from the McGregor Road overpass and struck its front windshield about 4am on Good Friday. And police said there could have been “catastrophic consequences” if an incident just minutes earlier on a fully-laden gas tanker at Pakenham had been successful. CASEY’S new technical school will be set up at Chisholm TAFE in Berwick. After months of speculation, Chisholm’s Berwick campus was confirmed as the host site for the new tech school at a special announcement on Tuesday 29 March, attended by Chilsholm Institute CEO Maria Peters and MPs Judith Graley, Luke Donnellan and Jude Perera. Construction of the technical school is expected to start in November 2017, while the centre is slated to open in late 2018, according to an officer’s report discussed at a Casey Council meeting in January. In the lead-up to the 2014 State Election, Labor promised $125 million for 10 new tech schools in Victoria. The Casey Tech School will be focused on biomedical, health and medical technology, as well as high tech manufacturing, production and processing technologies. “It is fantastic to see the Casey Tech School taking shape as so many from within our local community are working very hard to see it become a reality,” Ms Graley said. “The Berwick Campus of Chisholm Institute is an outstanding location that will ensure students from our local schools have access to many further education opportunities.” Casey Mayor Sam Aziz said the announcement was a major boost for the Casey and Cardinia regions. “With significant input from industry, young people will be provided with all the tools necessary in a high tech environment, learning the skills that will be needed by our local employers in advanced manu-

OVER a near three-decade long policing career, Paul Breen has had a number of highlights. But as he wraps up his role as Casey's police Inspector after two years, the seasoned officer said it had been the most “enjoyable role I’ve had”. “I’m lucky enough to lead, in my view, the most energetic and professional work force that I’ve been involved with in in my time as a police officer,” he said. “There is strong morale in a super busy environment. “And I’m also lucky enough to be supported by six very competent senior sergeants. “I couldn’t praise my senior sergeants and the sergeants enough. “They’ve been quite outstanding.” Insp Breen is moving into a new role with Victoria Police as the Investigation and Response Inspector for Greater Dandenong, Casey and Cardinia. And he’s very happy he’ll still be able to keep an “eye on crime” in Casey. If Insp Breen leaves behind any legacy after finishing up next month, the 29year police veteran said he’d like to think it’s the strong partnerships and links he has built up with Casey’s wide-ranging community groups.

“By doing that we’ve made them aware of the issues at hand and they’re made aware of the issues that we’re dealing with,” Insp Breen said. “There’s been some terrific partnership building. “What I found here in Casey, what I learnt very early on, was to get a strong gauge, go down to some of the soup kitchens, and I went down to Transit in Webb Street and met some amazing community people. “Those types of community groups really inspire me.” This isn’t the only legacy he’s leaving behind in Casey. Insp Breen has been pivotal in setting up several police-led initiatives such as the ‘Chatting with Casey Cops’ local radio program, while he was also heavily involved alongside Casey council in pushing for extra safety precautions at Lysterfield Lake where there have been three drowning deaths since July 2000, according to Life Saving Victoria. His continual support of the City of Casey saw Insp Breen receive many plaudits from a number of councillors during last week’s public meeting. Insp Breen came over to Casey after serving as Local Area Commander for the Port Phillip region, a role that saw him based in St Kilda. He said Port Phillip had its own chal-

lenges, its own “edginess” as a result of street prostitution and alcohol-fuelled crime, which put him in good stead when he walked in as the Local Area Commander for Casey, which has its own unique challenges. It’s well-publicised that the City of Casey consistently has the highest family violence statistics in the state, while Insp Breen said the reality of having only one major arterial road - the Monash Freeway - results in road safety and road trauma being significant issues. “In Casey the biggest challenge is how do we deal with such a vastly growing population in an enormous area?” Insp Breen said. “And we’ve got to be so efficient and smart with our tasking. “The challenge has been to really make strong inroads on reducing family violence and having a very strong effect on recidivist offenders.” While Insp Breen is sad to be leaving his position at Casey, he’s excited to be once again stepping outside his comfort zone. After all, he did exactly that two years ago and it brought him to Casey. “It’s been a place where I’ve really enjoyed coming to work every day,” Insp Breen said.

Road plays fast and loose By ALANA MITCHELSON LOOSE stones along a curved street at Lakeside are causing a hazard to drivers and collecting in the driveways of local residents. A 100 to 150 metre stretch of Oaklands Way, Lakeside, from Hartland Circuit to just past The Glen was resurfaced in mid-January as part of council’s road resealing contract. Lakeside resident Renee Caddy said she was worried about the safety of drivers around the curve in the road near The Glen where a section of road was “fixed“. “From where I live, I can’t really avoid driving down that stretch of Oaklands Way. You drive through and all of these stones go flicking everywhere,“ she said. “I have called council a few times, and in early February, they said something would be done in two months, but I haven’t noticed a change in the road condition. “The old road had a few cracks in it, but it was a lot better. My son actually reckons there are more cracks in it now. “When I called up the council, they put me on the phone with the engineer, Kurt, and he sounded annoyed about the condition of the road. He didn’t seem to know what had gone wrong.“

Ms Caddy said there were stones everywhere, no warning signs and that it “looked unpleasant“. “It’s quite frustrating,“ Ms Caddy said. “The stones are collecting in people’s driveways as well, so that can’t be safe for pedestrians. “You expect projects like this to be finished properly and, if not that, at least some warning signs so that drivers know to be cautious.“ Cardinia Council’s manager for Infrastructure Services Andrew Barr said council was aware of residents’ concerns about loose stones after the road works. “Prior to the road works at Oaklands Way, inspections showed the road should be resurfaced before it began to cause problems with the underlying pavement,“ Mr Barr said. “As part of the resealing works, loose stones are required to be added to the pavement for the spray seal to be successful. The excess stones are then removed using a suction sweeper. “Following feedback from residents, council has requested the contractor sweep the site a second time to remove any remaining excess stones.“ Council said the contractor revisited the site last Thursday.

Egg-xactly what’s needed EASTER is a time for thinking of others, and the Narre Warren CFA is certainly in that equation. Searching for identity By GEORGIA WESTGARTH WHAT’S the region’s identity? That’s the question the fresh-faced Cardinia Shire and City of Casey tourism advisory committee is trying to work out in a bid to boost tourism in the south-east region. A local trailblazer in the field, Michael Johnson owner of Moonlit Sanctuary Wildlife Conservation Park in Pearcedale, says there’s a lot to gain from an emphasis on local tourism. “It’s about making use of the constant traffic passing through the region to the Mornington Peninsula, Phillip Island and on the Sydney-Melbourne route, and enticing them to stop and spend money here,” Mr Johnson said. “The friends and relative market is very big in Casey. Because we are so multicultural we get families coming from overseas to visit their relatives here.” Mr Johnson first initiated the tourism conversation with former Casey Mayor Amanda Stapledon about three years ago and is thrilled to see the neighbouring councils merge to tackle tourism. “Tourism in Casey hasn’t been consistently attacked,” he said. “Tourism is a long-term process, it doesn’t just land on your doorstep, it takes several years to build up an identity.” Mr Johnson said this year the committee would be focused on developing a marketing strategy for the entire region. “I think tourism is undervalued as an economic activity, tourism is a very valuable builder of local jobs and entry level and senior positions. “And just ask the fish and chip shop owner, he’ll tell you about the customers he gets while passing his door after visiting another attraction. Tourism brings people into the region.” But according to Mr Johnson, the

Firebugs taint our Easter EASTER Saturday in Casey was tainted by fire bugs. Two suspicious fires were started on Saturday 26 March, but were brought under control quickly by local CFA. The first fire was lit at 260 Clyde Road Berwick, about 1.10pm. Detective Senior Sergeant Rob Clark said smoke was observed from the premises and Berwick CFA was quick to put it out. “The fire was located in the basement and started on a mattress,” Det Sgt Clark said. “No-one was present at the time of the fire, we aren’t sure if the building is abandoned.” Narre Warren police are treating the small fire as suspicious and are appealing for witnesses to come forward to assist in their investigation. “These things don’t set fire to themselves,” Det Sen Sgt Clark said. The car park at the Narre Warren South tennis club was targeted later that night, about 10pm. “Unidentified offenders have created a small fire off School Court with available combustible material, branches and leaves,” Det Sen Sgt Clark said. “Hallam CFA attended and out the fire out quickly.”

AN UNBORN joey was decapitated in a sickening, violent group attack on two kangaroos in Lysterfield South. The tortured bodies of two kangaroos and an embryo were found off Battersby Way, near the Churchill National Park, in the early hours of Wednesday 23 March. Lysterfield South resident Robert Bishop disturbed the group of “yobbos” with a torch, before hearing a “hammering sound” and making the grisly discovery. “At about 11pm we had idiots hooning around the empty block next to us, chasing the kangaroos with their 4WDs,” Mr Bishop said. “There were two vehicles and they were screaming and yelling out the windows as they sped after the poor terrified animals.” The drivers hurled abuse at Mr Bishop as they left the scene, but it’s suspected the same men returned an hour later with weapons to kill. Mr Bishop recalls seeing six to eight men gathered around a twitching kangaroo, about midnight. “They were standing in the headlights of a very large white 4WD ... the unfortunate kangaroo was upside down, its legs splayed wide and one of the men was hacking away at it with a very large knife. “The other males were talking excitedly and watching the spectacle, while another group was on the grass and I could hear a hammering sound coming from them.”

Endeavour Hills police were too late to catch the men, but found the two adult kangaroos with their throats slashed, ears hacked off and organs spilling out. One leg had been chopped off and the unborn joey was found in the gutter. A devastated Mr Bishop said he was still coming to terms with the ordeal which unfolded on his driveway. “They would have had to have used a big knife or a machete, why would you cut off their ears, that’s just sick,” he said. Mr Bishop described the men involved as “singlet wearing yobbos”. “They were Australian boys, I know because of the accents when they were swearing at me,” he said. Sergeant Terry Lloyd from Endeavour Hills police said there was no link to the decapitated kangaroo found in a Diamond Creek park on Australia Day, however the investigation was ongoing. “We are appealing for witnesses,” Sgt Lloyd said. “It’s quite disturbing,” “We know they were driving a white 4WD and urge anyone to contact police straight away, write down number plates and get a description of the offenders if it’s safe to do so.” It’s been speculated that the men may have used a bow and arrow to initially kill the animals. The incident has prompted the RSPCA to remind offenders that animal cruelty offences can face fines of more than $74,000 or up to two years in prison.

In a statement from the RSPCA, CEO Dr Liz Walker said the organisation was “sickened by any acts of deliberate cruelty against animals”. “There is a known link between violence against animals and violence against people,” she said. “We take deliberate acts of violence against animals very, very seriously.” In a bid to stop the slaughter of animals in his own street, Mr Bishop is crowd funding to install cameras. “It’s an ongoing problem in this street, we had a roo knocked over and had it legs broken six months ago, we had to call a Wildlife Victoria member to put it down,” Mr Bishop said. “We also have issues with rubbish dumping, drug deals and other undesirables in this street and I want to put up a steel pole topped with three wireless signal cameras to deter them or catch them. “I felt so helpless not being able to give police a better description or the number plates, I was so shocked by what I saw and I thought what can I do about it.” Mr Bishop is hoping to crowd fund up to $1000 to buy and install the cameras to capture footage of the vacant paddocks and the street. A SPIKE in snatch-and-run crooks has prompted Narre Warren police to warn Casey residents of the dangers surrounding selling goods online. Detective Senior Sergeant Rob Clark said there’s a resurgence of scammers in Casey and they’re targeting mobile phones. “It’s been occurring quite frequently in Casey and we are warning all sellers to be vigilant,” he said. The setup starts online when the offender offers to buy the mobile phone, knowing they will snatch the phone and run without paying. “They arrange to meet victims at unusual locations, car parks at McDonald's and use a stolen phone with a different number to communicate before the robbery,” Det Sgt Clark said. “If selling goods online be careful, look out for suspicious behaviour.” Have you fallen victim to thieves doing a runner? The Cranbourne inspiration is blind in her right eye and has eight per cent vision in her left eye. But when the minister from the High Street Uniting Church in Frankston suggested taking something up instead of giving something up for lent, Glenise and friend Valmai decided to get arty. “We’ve been going for three years now, I have three artists that I help, two of which are vision impaired,” class facilitator Valmai Scully said. Both students from Cranbourne, Glenise and blind friend Bev East, never thought their art would take out an award. “Their Anzac poppy’s won first prize at the Royal Melbourne Show in the vision-impaired section,” a proud Valmai said. But the win didn’t come easy. It was through out of the box thinking, Valmai said. “We find other means of doing things, we use stencils and shapes; Glenise finished a painting of a vase of flowers using cookie cutters,” she said. The 64-year-old artist said she had never been artistically inclined, saying “I couldn’t paint before I lost my sight.” “But just because we can’t see doesn’t mean we can’t do- people get a shock when I tell them I paint, but one advantage of being blind is I can’t see the mess I make!” Glenise said, laughing. “If I never lost my sight I would never have dabbled in art, I’m very proud of myself.” After losing her sight 10 years ago to optic neuritis, Glenise said it was the

A PACK of thieves broke in and robbed the Fountain Gate Apple store in the early hours of the morning last week. Six people, wearing hoodies over their faces, broke into the store about 3am on Saturday 26 March and stole a large quantity of electronic items before fleeing. The thieves forced their way into the shopping centre first and then into the Apple store, but fled a short time later after triggering the alarm. The thieves drove off in what looked like a grey Honda CRV or something similar, last seen on Overland Drive, turning east onto the Princes Highway. Police have released CCTV images of the thieves. LOCAL police are urging tradies to secure their tools after a “significant rise” in thefts from utes. In a statement posted on the Casey Eyewatch Facebook page on Wednesday 23 March, Leading Senior Constable Brett Owen, from the Proactive Policing Unit, urged residents to be vigilant. “Police have recently identified a significant rise in the number of incidents involving tools being stolen from utilities,

vans and trailers belonging to tradesmen,” the statement read. “These tools are being stolen from vehicles parked in both residential streets and at work sites. “Having tools stolen can be both costly and an interruption to business so it’s important to store tools securely when they are not in use.” Casey police have also thrown their support behind a new video campaign calling on the community to lock their cars.

Released this month by Victoria Police, the 46-second video entitled ‘The Thankful Thief, shows a motorist willingly handing over her belongings to a nearby thief, and finishes with the tagline ‘You might as well hand over your valuables’. Car thefts have been an ongoing problem in the City of Casey, with police continually reminding residents to ensure their doors are locked, and to leave no valuables unattended and in plain sight.

All things equestrian at new expo THE construction of a new Baw Baw Equestrian Centre on the western boundary of Lardner Park means that the Farm World Equestrian Expo will be an exhilarating new addition to Farm World 2016, to be staged from Thursday 7 April to Sunday 10 April. The Farm World Field Days have grown to be one of Australia’s largest regional agricultural events, attracting over 50,000 visitors to inspect some 700 exhibits. The Farm World Equestrian Expo will add a whole new dimension to the field days and its inclusion reflects the size and importance of the horse industry to both Gippsland and the regions surrounding Melbourne. A ticket to Farm World includes entry to the Farm World Equestrian Expo. Visitors to the Expo will be able to inspect a selection of dedicated equestrian-related exhibitors, attend a variety of master classes with advice from the best in the industry, and watch or participate in dressage or showjumping competitions. A huge range of classes and presentations has been scheduled, including advice from expert Katie Ramsay who will showcase the thoroughbred as a versatile performance and pleasure mount and will demonstrate different training methods. Rider fitness and nutrition is just as important as that of the horse and Zoe Hyde is a personal trainer who specialises in helping riders with their fitness. She will discuss rider nutrition and demonstrate exercises that are beneficial to riders. Advice on ways to determine if your saddle suits your individual horse will come from Robert McCann, who studied in England with the society of master saddlers and is currently the chief instructor for the ASFA saddle fitting courses. Rene Spierings will show how long reining is valuable tool when breaking in a horse, training performance horses and for rehabilitation or fitness work. His presentation will cover how to correctly and safely educate your horse in long reins.

The Equestrian Expo is an exciting feature of Farm World. Four feet on the floor is better than four feet in the air! Dan Maloney will show how to get control of your horse’s feet to improve communication between you and your horse. The Four To The Floor demonstration focuses on safety first followed by fun and then success. The Mounted Games Demonstration features a series of fast races performed on horseback; riders require a high degree of athletic ability, good riding skills, hand-to-eye coordination, general

determination to see things through to the end and a competitive team spirit. A presentation on how to grow sustainable pastures for horses by Simon Hunt from Stephen Pasture Seeds will include pasture establishment and ongoing maintenance. Adam Wootten has been showjumping for over 20 years internationally. His presentation on training showjumpers will cover a variety of exercises on horses at different levels, sharing

techniques to develop a successful show jumping horse. Visitors to the expo can learn the basics behind Jess Oldham’s Body Control technique. She will show how to apply the method from groundwork to riding, gaining horse and rider confidence and increasing your bond with your horse. The session will also discuss the rider and how to improve position with simple exercises. Nicole Magoffin is a Grand Prix dressage rider based in Queensland and has trained in the USA under Steffen Peters. This Training Scale Simplified presentation will cover how to correctly follow the German Training Scale, correctly identify where your horse’s strengths and weaknesses are in regards to the training scale, and how to put this knowledge into everyday practice. Dentistry and Laminitis Management is the subject of this presentation by Amanda Waller, an equine veterinarian and BVSc (Hons) horse dentist, with many years’ experience in the equine industry treating horses from all disciplines, from yearlings to retirees. She will discuss the importance of preventative dentistry and the prevention and management of laminitis. Ang Lea, a qualified and professional equine body and Bowen therapist, will present a talk called Horse Fix, which she calls a DIY horse owner’s body therapy and holistic toolbox. It is designed to empower owners to assess and care for their horses’ on a whole new level. Saturday 9 April and Sunday 10 April will feature an extensive show jumping schedule for a range of classes, culminating in the awarding of the inaugural Farm World Cup. The eighth annual Rotary Club of Endeavour Hills event will roll into Dandenong on Sunday 3 April. The inaugural event attracted 40 cars and brought in $2000. The number of cars on show had last year grown to about 500, with entries pouring in from across Victoria and interstate, and fund-raising topped $24,000. A 1948 FX Holden - the first of the

Keenan’s jumping for joy By JARROD POTTER CRANBOURNE’S jumping for joy on the back of little athletics success for Keenan O’Hanlon. The Meteorites’ marvel has been part of the club for many years, but his biggest impact has come recently as he made the decision to focus on his field events. With his eye set on triple jump and long jump success, O’Hanlon, 13, from Cranbourne, has been in in the midst of a golden summer after multiple wins at the Little Athletics Victoria State Track and Field Championships last week. He flew through the air on his home track at Casey Fields to claim the Under 13 boys triple jump before a nail-biting showdown in the long jump saw him take a one centimetre triumph.

“I just felt pretty good anyway to win a gold medal but it’s pretty awesome to travel 10 minutes and get this so it’s pretty cool,” O’Hanlon said. “In the triple jump it was pretty close - I won by one centimetre, I got 11.76 and the other guy got 11.75. “In long jump I was coming second the whole way and on the last jump the wind picked up and I just went with it and got me into first.” It comes on the back of his state title win at the Athletics Victoria Junior Track and Field Championships in February, defeating a few older and stronger opponents to earn his first gold of the summer and a ticket to Perth for the nationals. “I won state there and went to Perth for nationals and finished fifth in under15s so I was pretty happy with that,” O’Hanlon said. “It wasn’t an age group

above (for state) but I was one of the youngest there - so to do alright there was pretty good.” He’s off to Adelaide for the Little Athletics Australia championships soon and believes he’s a chance to add another medal to the ever-burgeoning trophy cabinet. It comes down to focus and discipline for the young athlete who has finally devoted his training attention to his best events, with the results of that hard work evident for all to see. “I’ve been doing them for a long time, but I haven’t really trained on them,” O’Hanlon said. “But now I’ve started training on them and it’s good to be getting up to these levels.” He wanted to thank his parents and the centre for their support.

Superstar wins fourth gold medal By JARROD POTTER HURDLING his way to a fourth consecutive Little Athletics Victoria gold medal, Ethan Harris has proved there’s no jump that can stand in his way. The local athletics superstar blitzed the competition in his two favourite events at the Little Athletics Victoria State Track and Field Championships last week. Casey Fields and the competition proved no obstacle for the Casey Little Athletics Centre hurdler, as he took home gold in the 60m and his pet event

- the 80m hurdles. Harris, 12, from Beaconsfield, stopped the clock at 12.88 seconds for the 80m hurdles and backed it up with a 9.31 second run in the 60m to clinch the gold medal brace. “Yeah it feels really good and I’m proud of myself,” Harris said. “I just like winning medals and that, going out and having some fun and being around my mates.” He also finished third in the 400m to cap off another extraordinary outing to the state titles.

It backs up an incredible run Harris has gone through at the state championships, where he’s consecutively won the 80m hurdles four times as well as becoming a triple-champion in the 60m. He’s not just winning these events but also smashing the records as he’s the state record holder in his 60/80m hurdles double in the Under 10 and Under 11 categories. Add to that a bronze medal in the school track titles - racing for Haileybury - and it’s been quite the illustrious summer for the Beaconsfield bolter.

While he also features in the field events as well, they’re mostly a welcome deviation from his usual track commitments ever since he joined the little athletics ranks six years ago. “Do them (field events) just for the fun of it but I mainly focus on the track,” Harris said. “I’ve been into it since Under 6s - my cousins they did it for a little while then I came down and had a try and I liked it.” He wanted to thank his parents and his coach Peter Benifer for their support of his athletic ambitions.

NARRE Warren Football Netball Club is hosting its inaugural School Holiday Camp on Friday 1 April 2016. The Football and Netball Camps will run side by side at Kalora Park, Fox Road, Narre Warren North and will be led by elite coaches, ex AFL player, Heath Black and VNL player and coach, Jade Heinrich. The club’s senior coaches will be assisted by senior footballers and netballers from the successful club. Junior players are encouraged to take advantage of this elite coaching experience and to learn from the best in their local environment. Sessions will cover skills, drills, technique and match play with a focus on enjoyment and participation. kicked off the 2016 South East Football Netball League season with an 18-point victory over an improved Hampton Park. Robinson Oval was packed to the rafters for the season opener, the Doves failing to capitalise on a fast start, kicking 4.8 to 0.0 in the opening term with the advantage of a slight breeze blowing to the Frawley Road end of the ground. Goals to Travis Davis, Lachie Batten, Mitch Woolgar and Michael Henry were the first-quarter highlights for the Doves, who should have nailed the Redbacks’ coffin closed. Gun-recruit Aaron Davey was lively early for the home side, but faded out of the game with Tim Schwab fantastic in a tagging role for the Redbacks. Batten and former coach Shannon Henwood were calm drivers in heavy traffic for the Doves, who looked structured and organised in the opening quarter. TAC CUP - ROUND 1 REVIEW DANDENONG’S round-one road trip hoodoo was broken emphatic ally on Saturday afternoon in a 22-point triumph over Gippsland. Traralgon became the Stingrays’ latest port of victory after the nail-biting finish on Easter Saturday. It was far closer than the final score suggests as Gippsland was within a whisker of kicking away with it in the last term, but Dandenong took the points to celebrate a rare victory in the bush. Former Doveton player Josh Battle (four goals) had a bag on offer but missed a couple of easy chances - but found the bigger uprights when he was needed most for the Stingrays. The running play of Tommy Glen and Tom Jok for Dandenong kept the side charging up the wings while Gippsland was well served by Ben Ainsworth, Kade Renooy and Tate Marsh through the middle. It went back and forth through the fourth quarter, as Kade Renooy (three goals) and Pakenham’s Jai Rout (two goals) kept the Power switched on. Lexus luxury to new level By DEREK OGDEN THE Lexus IS 200t is a success on many levels.

Pricewise it’s positioned between the upper medium passenger sedan and lower premium car market and it performs like a luxury sedan or a spritely sports coupe depending on how the driver sets up the controls. Finally, the IS 200t offers a level of comfort and convenience normally found in vehicles positioned well into the luxury car market. A replacement for the IS 250, sharp prices characterise the IS 200t range which consists of three variants - Luxury, F Sport and Sports Luxury, coming to the market at $64,041, $73,055 and $84,385 respectively, on the road. One of two comprehensive Enhancement Packs can be added to the Luxury and F Sport models with a corresponding cost increase. The test vehicle, for example, the IS 200t Luxury, included the Enhancement Pack 1, which adds an electric tilt and slide moonroof, upping the price to $66,870 on the road. Lexus throws down the gauntlet to rivals with the IS 200t bringing a stack of standard luxury features including pre-collision safety, active cruise control, reversing alarm, rain-sensing wipers and power adjustable steering column. The new Lexus IS models feature

Familiar look but Lexus sporty sedan comes with hidden advantages. a continuation of the classic IS lines sporty yet stylishly laid back. The signature Lexus spindle grille has evolved with a three-dimensional design and a chrome-plated frame and darker grey insert from top to bottom. Front-on the view is complemented with Bi Xenon HID low/high beam headlamps with LED daytime running lamps. In profile, the car is characterised by a line which takes off to match those of the rear taillight unit. The rear, once again, has a wide, sporty stance, emphasised by a trapezoidal design beginning between the

inner section of the tail light units and flaring out towards the side sections of the bumper. The driver-oriented cockpit design was inspired by that of the Lexus LFA supercar with the dashboard divided into a display zone and an operation zone to offer drivers more comfortable, ergonomic interaction with the vehicle's control systems. Soft-touch finishes can be found throughout, including padding on the centre console sides, while a piece of premium automotive embellishment is the silver metallic trim analogue clock with surface self illumination.

Generous 480 litre boot space is greatly enhanced by standard 60:40 split-folding rear seats. The touch-sensitive Lexus Remote Touch controller is positioned close at hand on the centre console and is the contact with many of the IS 200t convenience systems including satellite navigation and reversing camera. Lexus Enform enables mobile connectivity to a variety of services such as advanced Bluetooth with music streaming and phonebook, while dualzone automatic climate control is operated with new touch-sensitive electrostatic switches. The engine is taken from the NX 200t compact sports utility vehicle, the 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged unit switched through 90 degrees to face north-south, and hooked up to the rear wheels via an eight-speed Sports Direct Shift automatic transmission. With help from a revised exhaust system layout, it comes up with 180 kW, 27 kW more than the IS 250 V6 it replaces, and better than some of its close European rivals. The highest strength tensile steel body structure, together with 10 airbags, helps provide excellent occupant protection. Pre-Collision Safety System with Active Cruise Control are now standard on all models, while Blind Spot Monitor and Lane Departure Warning come on F Sport with option pack 2

and Sports Luxury models. The IS platform has been reworked to deal with the characteristics of turbo power as opposed to the previous naturally aspirated unit. The powertrain is well matched with the chassis, providing sharp steering, with the body rigidity helping maintain suspension control over varying road conditions. Off the mark, the IS 200t is at the mercy of the turbo, which only comes into its own under heavy pedal pressure, urging the engine on to high revs. There’s a non-intrusive growl, while an enhanced driving experience has been dialled in with auto-blip downshifts. The IS 200t is Lexus’s latest entrylevel to its rear-wheel drive sports sedan line-up, which includes the GS and flagship LS lines.
