Albury Wodonga’s largest circulating newspaper

It’s Melbourne’s Cup RISING star Tom Melbourne and Melbourne Cup winning jockey Glen Boss combined to take out the $170,000 Albury Gold Cup (2000m) for the training combination of Anthony and Lee Freedman on Friday. SEE MORE, PAGES 4-5.

Cancer centre set By MONIQUE KUZEFF CLOSE to three years in the making, the $70 million, three-level Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre (AWRCC) is set to open by mid-year. The new integrated cancer centre, which will be co-ordinated and managed by Albury Wodonga Health, comprises three levels with two internal courtyards, three radiotherapy bunkers and linear accelerators, consulting rooms, a wellness centre, three wings of 10 rooms and a link bridge to the Albury Base Hospital. The radiotherapy and the wellness centre are located on the ground floor, with 30-day chemotherapy chairs and consulting spaces on level one, and 30 inpatient beds on level two. AWRCC is set to become the central site and provide both public and private inpatient, day chemotherapy and various other health services from the one location. Patients will be able to receive radiotherapy, chemotherapy, new immune therapies and clinical trials locally, excluding highly specialised surgery. Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre Operations Director Robyn Gillis said the building was progressing well and the progress to date is targeting the scheduled opening. “The facility is due to be opened in the middle of the year and it’ll be staged opening to various providers and services such as hospital services, day chemotherapy, research facility and pharmacy services to name a few, Ms Gillis said. “The day chemotherapy area will have 28 chairs where chemotherapy services will be delivered. Ms Gillis said the building is of a magnificent modern design and a great complex for quality care. “The patients’ experience will be so much better due to the sheer size, light and aesthetics.

“The hospital has 30 individual rooms, each beautifully kitted out so patients can enjoy a beautiful view of the internal gardens. The AWRCC has a 130 car park capacity that have been added to the existing car park, plus an ambulance bay disabled parking, and short-term parking for oncology and day chemotherapy patients. Ms Gillis said it was important for the community to have the opportunity to see how the building is currently progressing. “The idea of the building came to fruition three years ago and they’ve been constructing ever since October 2013. “Construction has gone very well and we have about 50 to 80 people working on-site everyday, so lots of local contractors who are working to make a great centre. “It’ll be great to have all those different services in the one centre as it makes for a better out come journey and outcome for those patients.

Lights out for Earth By MONIQUE KUZEFF

Gold Cup of fund-raisers By MONIQUE KUZEFF FOR over 15 years the Gold Cup Charity Luncheon has been the pinnacle of the Gold Cup Charity Board’s commitment to raise proceeds for various projects that benefit children with disabilities and special needs in the Albury-Wodonga area. Established in 1999 with an aim to raise money to reach the needs of Wewak Street School, the Gold Cup Charity Board formalised and expanded its efforts in 2013 and to date the group has raised in excess of $260,000 and accepts applications from various special needs schools. A target of $20,000 was set to be raised at the charity event that was held last Thursday and around 240 women attended at a ticket cost of $120 - so the prospect seemed promising.

Annual attendees Nanette Brandt, Ros Wilson, Liz Escott, Helen Nolan, and Jean Haynes. 151733 Pictures: MONIQUE KUZEFF

This year, the proceeds will go to Aspect Riverina Albury, Aspire Support Services - Early Childhood Intervention, Belvoir Special School, Hume Public School Special Education Support Class, Wewak Street School and Wodonga Primary School. Gold Cup Charity Board member Melanie Mann said the proceeds would be used to purchase equipment including specialised playground equipment, learning tools, classroom and sensory garden upgrades. “The purpose is to raise money for local children with disabilities and special needs,” Ms Mann said. “The money will be put towards things like a sensory garden for one of the schools, some shade sales, play equipment and education resources.” The charity luncheon, which is held on the day before the Albury Gold Cup each year, consisted of

speakers, meals, champagne, fancy dresses, fascinators, raffles and silent auctions that run throughout the day. The silent auction gave away various items that had been donated by local businesses that support the charity, Ms Mann said. “The ladies were able to bid on the range of 30 beautiful items including trips away, beautiful fascinators, jewellery, falls creek season ski passes, bus trips and a range of other generous items,” she said. Over the years the Gold Cup Charity Board has seen a great increase in support from the local community and ongoing and new sponsors.

SATURDAY saw Hume Bank celebrating its fifth year of the world’s largest movement for the planet, “Earth Hour”, at Sumsion Gardens in Wodonga. Lights were turned off at 7.30pm with a dedicated crowd of Border residents joining Hume Bank in the gathering to enjoy an hour of 'Music by Moonlight’, an acoustic candlelit event with local artists Mia Grace and the Aviators. Earth Hour is a 'lights off’ event which sees over two million Australians and over 2000 businesses each year participating in the hour of candlelight, which aims to draw attention to tackling global warming and spark a conversation about what can be done to help. Donations from Hume Bank’s Earth Hour has gone to Seed Savers Albury-Wodonga, a local community group bringing people together who are interested in growing and saving seeds. Seed Savers Albury-Wodonga President Lou Bull said the organisation's goal was to encourage the use and saving of seed from locally appropriate and useful plants. “We promote home food production and the saving of open-pollinated seeds by running workshops, hosting guest speakers, maintaining a seed bank and by encouraging networking and sharing of practical skills between our members and guests.” For further information on Earth Hour, visit www.earthhour.org.au or for Seed Savers AlburyWodonga, visit www.ssaw.org.au

Riverina Highway stage one is complete and ready for the Easter Picture: MONIQUE KUZEFF weekend. 151891

Highway upgrade open for Easter By MONIQUE KUZEFF THE first stage of the NSW Government’s $11 million upgrade of the Riverina Highway is expected to be opened before the weekend. Stage one of the upgrade, which began in October last year, encompasses 2.7km of the road from Sandy Creek to Lake Hume Village and involved widening the road, installing guard rails, providing new and improved signage and building a new road surface. Its completion delivers improvement of road safety and travel experience for motorists. Deputy Premier Troy Grant said the Riverina Highway was an important motorway link for motorists and freight operators travelling between Albury and Victoria. “Increasing the width of the road is a significant road safety improve-

ment and provides more room for vehicles to recover safely should they leave the road, Mr Grant said. Albury MP Greg Aplin, who has long called for the works, said it was great to have the road opened before the Easter weekend in time for tourists and motorists coming through to visit the area. “We expect significant volumes of traffic travelling to Albury, Melbourne, Bethanga and the popular holiday destination, Lake Hume, via the Riverina Highway this Easter break, Mr Aplin said. “I’d like to thank community members for their patience during its construction and I look forward to stage two getting under way. Stage two upgrade planning is currently under way, which will extend from Lake Hume Village to Bethanga Bridge and is expected to be completed by mid-2017.

Man, 84, dies after car crash AN elderly Albury man has died in hospital following a single car crash in Springhurst on Friday 18 March. Police said the 84-year-old was driving behind a truck when both vehicles turned off the road into a rest area about 1.20pm. Investigators believe that the man braked, causing his vehicle,

a Nissan sedan, to skid on the wet road and crash into a tree. The man was conveyed to hospital, but died later in the night having suffered internal injuries, broken ribs, pelvis and ankle. The man was allegedly wearing a seat belt and the air bags had ejected.

A SMALL group of five local women have recognised the dire situation drought-stricken farmers are facing, and in response have donated $2000 to go towards fuel on the upcoming Burrumbuttock Hay Runners trip next month. These women make up the Community Crew Albury and work hard to raise funds to support various community initiatives and groups throughout the Albury Wodonga regions. With additional funds left over from their last fund-raiser, they felt it necessary to give the excess proceeds to the Burrumbuttock Hay Runners, which is an initiative that aims to support farmers who are facing hardship due to severe drought conditions. Community Crew Albury member Kellie Kadaoui said while a truck driver gave his time and truck, he couldn’t be expected to fund his fuel. “They’re coming from everywhere including South Australia, Victoria, NSW and even Tasmania, Ms Kadaoui said. “Truck drivers are giving up their time all over Australia, with the hay coming from as far as Western Australia. It takes $2000 to fund the fuel of a single truck and as the saying goes 'without trucks Australia stops’. Over 250 trucks have been loaded with hay and are ready to hit the road for the next run up North. Ms Kadaoui said while Australia was an amazing country that provided good quality food - if the farmers weren’t supported, this would lessen. “From what we’ve heard from farmers, it’s so hard to recover from a drought, it takes years. “Everyone living in this region has some kind of affiliation to farming in a

Howie and Dallas with their own loaders on the big run. 151728 Pictures: CONTRIBUTED way and we feel this area needs to lead by example by supporting the Burrumbuttock Hay Runners. “If we can help out, so can anyone else. The Burrumbuttock Hay Runners have set a target of $500,000 for fuel for the next run, but they are almost $200,000 short. The next run is expected to depart on 31 March and will cover 1500 kilometres, with 220 trucks and 314 trailers in the convoy. To donate, visit the Burrumbuttock Hay Runners Facebook page.

Racegoers defy the rain By MONIQUE KUZEFF THE iconic Albury Gold Cup managed to pull in a decent crowd of around 1200 punters, spectators and revellers on Friday despite the weather not delivering any favours. This year’s $170,000 Gold Cup was taken out by rising star Tom Melbourne who, paired with jockey Glen Boss, managed to win the two-kilometre race on a wet and heavy track. While punters and spectators were kept content over the eight races with strong runners on the field this year, the general crowd enjoyed the change of blue skies at midday, where they were able to showcase their autumn clothes in the sunshine. “It’s fantastic seeing everyone dressing up beautifully and enjoying a nice social day out

together,” according to Border resident Alison Bourke, who enjoyed watching the Fashion on the Fields event. “It makes for a fun day out we must be crazy for coming in that weather, but we’d do it again - I’m a die-hard for racing.” Border resident and trainer of racehorses Greipel and Challenge Accepted, Bec Duryea, said she enjoyed coming to the Albury Gold Cup because it was such an iconic event in the area. “The weather had thrown a bit of a spanner in the workings of the day but nonetheless, we were in for some good races,” she said. Throughout the day, NewsWeekly photographer ADAM WILSON was out and about on the field capturing the races, the fashion and the trackside action of the 2016 event.

EVEN with an overcast sky and a soaking field, Albury Gold Cup didn’t fail to deliver another year of fantastic fascinators, dresses and suits. With more people being picky about what they were to wear on a cooler climate, the range of autumn inspired dresses and classic ponchos and coats were observed on Thursday showcasing the local styling talent. Although contestant numbers were down at this years Fashion on the Field, the competition still brought some stunning headwear and outfits making it extremely difficult for judges Tegan Martin (2014 Miss Universe Australia), Kris Smith (Men’s Face of Myer) and Alex Pendlebury (wife of Collingwood footballer Scott Pendlebury) to choose a winner for each of the different categories. Fashion on the Field organiser Sarah Crothers said it was obvious that contestants considered autumn trends for that time of the year. “There were plenty of heavier fabrics and autumn and winter colours and contestants really got a hold of that, Ms Crothers said. “The dreary morning weather would have made the crowds disheartened and so many people would’ve decided their outfit based on that. “People really got a hold of closed shoes, leathers, coats and winter accessories such as gloves and ponchos. Winner of the Myer Millinery of the Day award went to Erin Baxter, who wore an impressive Ron Burgundy piece with an elegant leathercut design accompanying it.

Border men dressed to impress, and for Brodie Stephens it paid off as he took home the Myer Man of the Day after pairing a unique dark Ron Burgundy suit with a simple, yet classic black tie. “I honestly didn’t expect to win as I wasn’t even going to go in to the comp until about 20 minutes before, Mr Stephens said. “I liked this suit because it’s so different and you just don’t see a lot of this colour around. Last but definitely not least, Megan Boulton was the Myer Lady of the Day with her stunning white laced two-piece and a modern white leather-cut millinery. “I had planned my outfit for a couple of months and wanted to do this for myself as I lost quite a bit of weight after having children, Ms Boulton said.

LIGHTLY raced Irish import Tom Melbourne underlined his undoubted potential with an emphatic win in the Albury Gold Cup on Friday. The five-yearold has now won five of his seven starts, four since joining the high profile Anthony and Lee Freedman stable, and looks destined for bigger things for his owners, headed by the OTI syndicate of Simon O’Donnell and Terry Henderson. Jockey Glen Boss, best known Winning jockey Glen for his three Boss. 151896 straight Melbourne Cups on Makybe Diva, had Tom Melbourne beautifully placed behind tearaway leader Kiroibete and made a one act affair of the cup in the home straight. His only worry was Tom Melbourne laying in late in the race, but he had a big enough lead to comfortably hold off the fast finishing High Opinion, with the Gai Waterhouse trained Canberra Cup winner Hippopus a distant third. Earlier, there were emotional scenes after the third race when Wangaratta trainer John Ledger saddled up Justiceforall to win the Adrian Ledger Memorial - a race held each year in memory of his son, who was killed in a race fall at Corowa in March 2005. John said after the race that the win wasn’t only about what happened to his son. “It’s not just about Adrian, it’s about every person who has ever been injured or sat on a horse.

A river of healing By MONIQUE KUZEFF THE Murray River is a place for feeding and healing and to let your worries and stress go downstream, according to Aboriginal Elder Ken “Uncle Tony” Murray who joined Murray PHN and other organisations on the bank of the iconic river in celebrating the 10th anniversary of 'Close the Gap’. On Thursday, Murray PHN hosted a Close the Gap Day event in partnership with Mungabareena Aboriginal Corporation, Albury Wodonga Aboriginal Health Service, Department of Health and Human Services, Albury Wodonga Health and Gateway Health. Close the Gap aims to reduce Indigenous disadvantage in areas including life expectancy, child mortality, access to childhood education, employment outcomes and

educational achievement. The event brought together people from various professional backgrounds to share information and take meaningful action in support of achieving indigenous health equality by 2030. Mr Murray said the day was about ’white and black’ people coming together to be friends and not enemies. “We grew up with hate toward white people in my day, but today we come together to show that we can all be friends.” The event was opened with a 'Welcome to Country’ by a local Aboriginal Elder followed by the signing of the pledge and a barbecue accompanied by CEOs and senior managers of the various participating organisations. that contribute to health inequality. Murray PHN Chief Executive Officer Matt Jones said genuine long-term partnerships between the community, local agencies and services, governments and Aboriginal and TSI people were needed. “Aboriginal and TSI people still experience much lower life expectancy rates, acute levels of sickness and poorer access to appropriate medical care than most non-Indigenous Australians,” Mr Jones said. Murray PHN Regional Manager North East Richard McClelland, CEO Albury Wodonga Aboriginal Health Service David Noonan, Mingabareena Aboriginal Corporation CEO Michael Cutmore, Gateway Health CEP Leonard Pedy and Albury Wodonga Health Aborginal Services Development Officer Kerrie Brown signed the pledge.

PHN Integration and Engagement Executive Director said it was important that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people’s (TSI) health was improved. “We want to have an impact on closing the gap so Aboriginal and TSI people have better access to health,” Ms Wilkinson said. “Aboriginal communities and health organisations are working together to find appropriate ways to address that, and we want Albury and Wodonga communities to recognise partnerships that are important in the area.” The pledged focused on a recommitting to Close the Gap by 2030, increasing Aboriginal and TSI control and participation in the delivery of health services, and addressing the social and critical issues of housing, education and self-determination

IT’S a new season. For 14 years, we have been known as North Gate Church, but on Sunday 14 February, we announced a change of name to our congregation and community that we are now known as Gateway Life Church, which we believe is a greater reflection of our great community and region. Most of what we do at Gateway Life Church is very relational and practical as we believe that spirituality and practicality go hand in hand. Gateway is committed to all the foundational doctrines and values of the Bible and the Christian Church while being very relational, relevant and contemporary in our style. We invite you to come along to our Easter Services, 9am Good Friday and 10am Easter Sunday, located on the corner of Griffith and McDonald Roads in Lavington to hear about a God of love and grace demonstrated through Jesus Christ. At every Gateway Life Church Sunday gathering, you’ll hear inspirational music, relevant and powerful messages, stories, interviews and experience God’s loving presence, great hospitality and friendly people.

Cross is symbol with rich meaning for all This was revealed most powerfully in his death. There Jesus was shamed, abandoned and cruelly killed. But His death was the ultimate reason he came - to die for the sins of the world; to absorb and overcome all the evil, wrongdoing, failure and shame that deforms human life. It is we humans who have defied our Creator, the God who gave us the precious gift of life. We are rebels, but all the consequences of our defiance - the guilt, the harm, the shame, the apparent meaninglessness of life, and the fear of death, these Jesus took upon Himself on the cross. Because He died for us we can avoid suffering the consequenc-

es ourselves. He has reconciled the world to God and opened heaven’s gates. He did this because of God’s infinite, overflowing love for us. How do we know this to be true? Because He rose from the dead on Easter morning. Jesus’ resurrection is His vindication; the divine declaration that sin has been put away, death has been defeated, life can now flourish as God meant it to. That is why the cross adorns churches - it is the symbol of victory. The death and resurrection of Jesus are worth celebrating. A blessed and happy Easter to all. Rev’d. Peter McKeague

WHY is the cross the symbol of Christianity? Why are churches adorned with crosses? When it is remembered that the cross was an instrument of execution, like a gallows, it seems very strange. Crucifixion, being nailed by the wrists and ankles to a cross, was the commonly used form of execution in the Roman Empire. It was a very cruel, shameful and prolonged form of agony. Yet for Christians the crucifixion of Jesus is the heart of their faith. Jesus’ death on the cross was the climax of His life, a life which by His teaching, His healing and His compassion, demonstrated the profound love of God for humanity.

CONSIDERED one of the more powerful allfemale groups in Australia, The Ten Sopranos combines classical and contemporary singing, providing a musical feast to whet the appetite of true music fans of all ages. The group is led by the “Singers’ Singer” Penny Pavlakis, whose critically acclaimed talent brings to the stage star quality few can match. The late maestro Tommy Tycho said: “Pavlakis has no serious competitor on the world stage, whether it’s classical or contemporary, she really is magnificent”. The Ten Sopranos rendition of classics “Nessun Dorma” and “La Donna Mobile” are highlights of the show and augmented with subtle new harmonies. While John Denver’s “Aye Calypso” and Peter Allen’s “Don’t Cry Out Loud” have been “re-arranged” and deliver a haunting and emotional experience along with a haunting rendition of “Oh Danny Boy” . Ganggajang.

Gang lands on sacred site By TANIA PHILLIPS ICONIC Australian band GANGgajang are on the road and on the move with a brand new single, Circles In The Sand, complete with a striking music video shot in front of majestic Uluru. They are the first band to be given permission by the traditional landowners to shoot a music performance video at the sacred site. Circles In The Sand is Gang’s first new single in more than a decade, and the first release since the passing of original member Chris Bailey in 2013, and to celebrate they are touring - coming to the SSA Club on 30 April. The remaining four original members Mark 'Cal’ Callaghan, Graham 'Buzz’ Bidstrup, Geoff Stapleton and Robbie James, along with bassist Peter Willersdorf, have returned to the studio to deliver a single that takes us back to where it all

began. It reminds us once again who we are, where we live - and in doing so offers a glimpse of a different, more inclusive future. The video was shot by filmmaker Chris Tangey and edited by Phil Evans, and features singers, Dani Young and Indigenous icon Warren H. Williams, singing in Arrernte language. The band’s connection with Jimmy Little Foundation and Uncle Jimmy Thumbs up!, along with their work in the Mutitjulu community near Uluru, ultimately led to the shoot being approved, explains Buzz Bidstrup. “I have been travelling to and working in the community of Mutitjulu, next to Uluru for over 15 years, so I have a lot of friends there,” he said. “When we wanted to make the clip, the traditional owners were the first to give their permission. “A big thanks to them and the administrators of the com-

munity and also to the media officer from Parks Australia who also had to give their permission for us to shoot the clip”. Circles In The Sand was written by Graham ‘Buzz’ Bidstrup and Geoff Stapleton, the co-writers inspired by the Pintubi 9 and the painters of the Western Desert who drew sand paintings that eventually became the modern “dot painting” revolution. GANGgajang has been part of the Australian pub music landscape since 1984; the band’s self-titled debut album dropped in 1985 and contained the hits Gimme Some Lovin’, Giver of Life, House of Cards and the perennial Sounds Of Then (This Is Australia). Just add spice - and stir 10 Cloverfield Lane (PG) Starring: John Goodman, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, John Gallagher Jr

Box office

THIS little sleeper is the best movie going around at the moment. Filmed on a tiny $15 million budget, it’s already taken twice that in the US. A distant relative of the alien invasion film Cloverfield a few years back, the latest film heads in an entirely different direction. Scream queen, Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Michelle), breaks up with her partner,

leaves the city and is involved in a car accident. She awakes in a rural bunker, in the “care“ of John Goodman (Howard) - and the initial thought is she’s captive to a psycho. So … is she? The initial story told by Howard is there’s been some form of attack (terrorists, aliens, North Korea?) and this is confirmed by the bunker’s other occupant, John Gallagher Jr (aka Jim from Newsroom) as Emmett. It’s a great performance from Goodman as Howard, and

it’s certainly very hard to tell whether this nutty survivalist is what he makes out to be. The tension ratchets up as Michelle tries to get to the bottom of the mystery … with Howard’s lies, coupled with some outside evidence, making it hard to get to the bottom of things. And there lies the core of the film. To say more would be to give away one of the great twists of recent cinema. But rest assured, 10 Cloverfield Lane is a different, and spicy, little morsel indeed. - Jason Beck

WANTS YOUR TRADE IN* Over 170 Brands Of Quality Audio and Visual Equipment brands available at On Line Prices.

Music to soul OVER the years I have had the privilege to sell many quality sound systems, one of my biggest frustrations are my musician customers. Most would think that a talented musician would naturally purchase a quality sound system. It does with a few, but most musicians are happy to listen through a computer, phone or a basic set of headphones. Listening to the music without the body attached. Or compressed music as some call it. To solve the riddle, I have

asked some of my muso friends to help me with the solution. Apparently, a musician will listen to the structure and composition of the sound, be able to tell you the brand of the guitar and his view of the performer performance. How the music affected the soul or was received by a musician was of less importance. When you sit back and listen to the sound stage of a recording and enjoy the musician’s presence and creativity in your environment, you are the final product of the performer’s creativity. The challenge is there for the

musicians, who wish to come to the other side and learn how the full range of music can change you from an analytical listener to listener for pleasure and relaxation. It may surprise you to learn, many of the aspects of having the best acoustic requirements for the performance apply to the home. An area that our converted musos have agreed on is the value in the sound of valve amplifiers. Take 10 minutes of your time, come down to Tru HiFi and discover a new world of musical enjoyment.

Low running cost has appeal By MONIQUE KUZEFF AFTER relocating all the way from Melbourne four years ago, Elmwood resident Geoff Young has never looked back. For Mr Young, Elmwood offered him a home that ticked all the boxes. As a high-performance housing estate, Elmwood runs on practically no energy and is built at the highest level of sustainability in Australia. This week the ninth part of a 12-part series is introduced, explaining why Elmwood has been awarded one of the best housing developments in Australia. Since its planning and development stages, Elmwood has aimed to deliver a goal to improve on environmental impact. Mr Young said it was the location, sustainability and low running costs that initially anchored him in. “It was the value for money that Elmwood offers along with the quality fittings, double glazing, high ceilings, waste water management and solar hot water systems and overall, the low running costs,” Mr Young said. “In terms of the house itself, it suited my needs and I liked the eco side of it, to me that was a big selling point. “Since I’ve put in solar panels, I’m not paying anything for electricity given that heating and cooling both run on electricity.” The directional placement of buildings, window

positioning, building fabric, sun's path and local breezes are all aspects of development that are taken into consideration before the construction of Elmwood town houses. This is to ensure that the high rated Elmwood homes use the natural cooling and warming conditions of the seasons to lower energy usage and maintain low living costs. Mr Young said the estates location is central to Wodonga and provides convenience in all aspects of his life. “It’s central to almost everything I need including White Box Rise shopping centre, medical centre, post office, walking trails, pubs, pharmacy, hospital and cafes to name a few,” he said. “The garden out the front is also low maintenance.” Mr Young said his home was completely air draft tight and the insulation worked well in both the warmer and cooler months. “There are no wind drafts blowing through the house on a windy day. And likewise, if you want to heat up or cool down the house, it doesn’t go out any cracks or openings. “During the day, I might lower the blinds to maintain a nice consistent temperature. Elmwood 8.5 sustainability rating exceeds the standard 6 stars, so without having to sacrifice individual comfort, Elmwood residents can help reduce the carbon footprint by requiring only minimal, if any, heating and cooling.

Mortgage over mind A NATIONAL survey commissioned by industry super fundowned ME bank found many young Australian couples may be choosing a doorbell over wedding bells this wedding season. In a survey of 2036 Australians, ME asked if any had sacrificed goals to buy their first home. With the cost of a wedding averaging $36,0001, nearly 23 per cent of Australian Millennials revealed they’ve delayed or downsized their nuptials in favour of buying a home. Furthermore, 21 per cent delayed or downsized their honeymoon, and 24 per cent have decided to delay or have fewer children to commit to a mortgage. The prospect of buying a home is so daunting that some brides and grooms now ask guests for a monetary contribution towards their house deposit instead of traditional gifts. But buying a home outside of marriage is not out of the norm either. Around 37 per cent of Australian couples were not married when they purchased their first home, according to ME’s findings, a figure that coincides with the general rise of defacto couples living together. ME Head of Home Loans, Patrick Nolan, said with house prices more than doubling in the past 15 years, it’s not surprising couples are

questioning the value of an extravagant wedding. “What we’ve seen, however, is that with a little lateral thinking and some sensible saving and budgeting, couples are finding increasingly savvy ways to save for their house deposit and eat their wedding cake, too.” Top tips whether you’re being carried over the threshold or simply want to buy one ... Something old: and so the old adage goes: a little goes a long way. Set a fixed amount to be automatically deposited into a high-interest online savings account, so you’re less inclined to touch it. It won’t be long before you start to see that pot of savings grow. Something new: deploy a new home buying strategy: buy with friends or family, consider alterative locations, or start out with an investment property to get your foot in the door. Something borrowed: in the current climate, we’re seeing more than ever, families getting together to help out with big financial decisions such as buying a home and saving for a deposit. Something blue: avoid a ‘financial blue’ by talking about your finances. According to a ME survey, the more you talk about money, the less tension and conflict it causes.

WITH solid capital growth being recorded for larger homes across the state in December, available space is proving increasingly attractive to buyers. This doesn’t just mean more bedrooms, but also outdoor areas, pools and gardens. A well-presented garden is attractive to buyers and can add significant value to your home, with some agents estimating as much as 10-15 per cent to the final sale price.

FOR LEASE

With this in mind, before you put your home on the market it’s important to ensure your garden or yard is looking its best. And remember, your outdoor areas are an integral part of the overall package, so it’s worthwhile maximising all available space. A home’s yard is also considered to be a good indicator of the amount of effort given to the property with dead plants, overgrown shrubs or leaves, detracting from your home’s key selling points.

4/546 Thompson St, Albury FOR LEASE

While it’s important not to overspend on landscaping, small improvements such as new soil, rocks and plants can help transform your yard, making it appear fresh and inviting. Making your home - and outdoor areas - appear well-maintained and cared for will ensure you get the best possible price for your property. Simply edging your lawn can achieve great results, giving the

appearance of an easily maintained yard. For those with limited outdoor areas, be creative in how you present the space by building upwards - rather than outwards. If possible, address your property’s shortfalls such as busy roads by planting-out your gardens. While the plants may not initially create a full visual barrier, or any real sound improvement, the perceived long-term improve-

ment from a buyer’s point of view will be worth it. Lighting is another key consideration, as some buyers will only have time to view your home after dark. Night lighting can also add value to your garden and assist in incorporating your indoor and outdoor living areas. Whatever the size of your garden, if it’s looking its best, you’ll find buyers drawn to your home and a sale made all the easier.

Local Sport Champion coaches appointed to lead By TANIA PHILLIPS OVENS and Murray champions Jon Henry and Darrell Spencer will team up to coach the league’s 2016 Interleague campaign against Hampden Football Netball League. The duo were announced during a press conference at the SS&A Club Locker Room late last week. The pair both boast illustrious careers in the O&M with Spencer holding the equal games record at Corowa-Rutherglen with 333 senior matches, along with two premierships including the 2000 flag as captain. He has also represented the league and NSW. Henry has a pair of premierships to his name as well, playing a total of 210 senior games for the Wangaratta Magpies where he also coached from 2002 to 2006. Also an O&M representative, Henry was the League leading goal kicker in 1992 after spending time on both Carlton and Brisbane’s senior lists. SS&A Ovens & Murray Football Netball League general manager Aaron McGlynn believes the appointment of Henry and Spencer is exactly what the league needed. “They are lifelong Ovens & Murray people,” he said. “They have the respect of the league. When we conducted a review of interleague football several years ago, Jon and Darrell were exactly the type of people we identified and to have them on board is extremely exciting”. The SS&A OMFNL will take on the Hampden FNL in Warrnambool on Saturday 21 May.

Winning the toss and batting first Belvoir, led by captain Drew Cameron (55) and consistent opening batsmen Glen Vassallo set their opponents 220 to win this year’s title. Vassallo has been one of the stars with the bat in the CAW this year, scoring 3290 for the season and looked in good form despite losing his opening partner when the score was just four. He set up the innings with good support by the captain coming in at second drop. Best of the Wodonga bowlers was Beau Kennedy who took 4-48 to take his total for the season to 27 wickets while Byron Hales continued his strong form with the ball to take 3-59 off 17 overs (he finished the year with 36 wickets).

Wodonga were sent packing for just 116 with captain Robert Jackson, coming in at four, remaining 54 not out as the wickets fell around him.

THE second round of the Victorian Road Series (VRS) was another multi-day tour, on the stunning roads around Mansfield including a short 47km from the town to the top of Mt Buller. The women’s race hosted a classy field and local rider Taryn Heather from the Bike Bug team featured across all three stages while Jess Featonby in the men’s A grade took out the king of the mountain prize and third up Mt Buller. Riders lined up at individual start times from 8am on the Saturday for a time trial, racing 16km against the clock. The 75 A graders were handed a lesson in the race of truth by national time trial bronze medallist, Sean Lake, who smoked the course, averaging over 47km/h for a time of 20:19. Albury’s Jess Featonby who is more suited to the Buller climb than a rolling 16km time trial came in 2:16 down in 25th place, still close enough to be a chance for the general classification or GC. In C grade, the Bended Elbow Cycling Team’s Charly McMillan took another podium, finishing in 2nd place in 23:19. Brad Rose from the Bended Elbow was making his

VRS debut, and his race plans became derailed following a technical compliance issue on his seat and stem positioning. He was effectively penalised four minutes which saw what would have been a top three ride, become second last place on the leader board, all but ruling him out of the GC contention. The Saturday afternoon stage was over 89km on the road between Mansfield and Jamison. It provides a chance for the larger, stronger non-hill climbers to seek a stage win, and the lean, light weight riders who float up the mountains have to follow wheels and ensure they don’t lose time. In the women’s A grade, three riders snuck away to take 21 seconds on a group of six, including Taryn Heather and two of her teammates with the main bunch another minute behind. The Avanti Isowhey sports team continued their domination in the men’s A grade with Patrick Lane taking the stage, while Jess Featonby strategically picked up the maximum 3 king of the mountain points along the way and finished safely in the main bunch, 50 seconds down on the winning break.

In the men’s A grade, the smaller teams and individuals cracked open the Avanti race domination on the stage, but not enough to take the overall title. Rhys Gillett took the stage, cov-

ering the 47km in 1:30, including the climb, with Beechworth’s Matt Clarke in second and Jess Featonby dropping four seconds to take third while averaging 21.5 km an hour up the mountain. Avanti’s Joe Cooper crossed the line 13 seconds down and close enough to take overall GC honours.
