Bottleneck jam By ANEEKA SIMONIS FRUSTRATIONS are at an all-time high along one of Pakenham’s most congested roads- frequented by children and youths observed weaving in between cars- and drivers are growing increasingly agitated during their bumper-to-bumper commute. A long queue of cars can be seen on either side of the infamous McGregor Road level crossing during peak times. Many drivers desperately trying to escape the gridlock can be seen attempting to manoeuvre past fellow motorists or attempt a dangerous dash across the train tracks as traffic bottle-
necks, reduced from four lanes to two over the crossing. Youths and mothers with prams are among those seen “walking in between cars” or making “a quick dash” across the road without a pedestrian crossing, according to Heritage Springs Residents Group president Ian Coad. He met with Public Shadow Minister for Public Transport David Hodgett and Bass MP Brian Paynter on Wednesday 16 March to discuss the much-needed duplication project. He agreed with Mr Paynter who said the jammed road was increasingly “aggravating” drivers, with the issue expected to further worsen with the

they are campaigning to see the issue addressed. “We are listening to what you are saying on this issue and we are continuing to advocate to the Victorian Government for the upgrade and duplication of the road over the crossing, as well as for intersection works at Henty and Rogers streets,” Councillor Leticia Wilmot told the Gazette. It is estimated the Pakenham Bypass, which links to McGregor Road, will be used by 32,000 vehicles per day by 2021. Currently, 15,000 motorists are thought to be using the single lane thoroughfare each day.

The Gazette contacted the Andrews Government to understand if the duplication project was being considered in the upcoming 2016-’17 State Budget but did not receive a response before this edition went to press. Paynter’s side in for a victory By RUSSELL BENNETT PAKENHAM has been crowned champions of West Gippsland cricket for the first time in 16 years as the home-town Lions clinched a breakthrough Premier division grand final win over two-time reigning champions, Kooweerup. Girl, 12, on tracks By ANEEKA SIMONIS A LITTLE girl found walking on the train tracks in Officer was seen by paramedics and police before being conveyed from the scene uninjured. The 12-year-old girl was observed walking along the tracks about 11.15am on Wednesday 16 March. The incident shut down the train line, with services halted in Pakenham as emergency workers assisted the girl out of harm’s way. The girl was uninjured as a result of the incident. Brakes lock-on blamed for crash A NARRE Warren man died in a motorcycle crash in Cranbourne West on Tuesday afternoon. The incident brings this year’s state motorcycle death toll to 23. Police say the 58-year-old man was riding west on Central Parkway about 4.20pm when he crashed. He was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics. Senior Sergeant Pat McGavigan from the Cranbourne police said the driver was launched into the air after the brakes on the Honda CB900F Hornet locked. “He was found on the western side of the roundabout by a female passer-by after the collision,” Sen Sgt McGavigan said. “He’s locked the brakes and dropped the bike and tumbled side over side through the central traffic island.” Two homeowners have CCTV footage of the man losing control as he approached the Morningside Boulevard intersection. Sen Sgt McGavigan said police are investigating if speed played a role in the man’s death due to the lengthy skid mark. “The skid mark would be around 20 to 30 metres long. “His motorcycle was extensively damaged,” he said. Haider’s radical thoughts By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS TERRORISM expert Greg Barton is informed by 27 years’ expertise in Islamic political thought and movements. He had no simple, easy answer on why teenager Numan Haider was apparently radicalised and stabbed two police officers before he was fatally shot in front of Endeavour Hills police station on 23 September 2014. “There’s a risk in everything we do, including not doing something,” he said. Professor Barton appeared at Haider’s coronial inquest at the County Court on 11 March which is examining Haider’s demise and how to snap susceptible teen males from the Islamic State (IS) spell. Rachel Ellyard, counsel assisting the coroner, posed to Professor Barton that this might not have happened had Haider not been aware of police interest in him. What if his room had not been searched by police without his permission on the day of the attack or what if police had not been intent on meeting him that same day, she asked. Maybe this “pushed” Haider into doing something he “might not have been prepared to do”, Ms Ellyard said. Professor Barton told presiding coroner John Olle that police tried to do the right thing. They followed up on something they were concerned about. “They did not rush into arrest, did not prejudge,” he said. “It was well intentioned and appropriate.” But “knowing what we know now” perhaps police could do things differently, he said, such as eschewing uniforms and making meetings with at-risk teens as low-key as possible. Since 9/11, Professor Barton’s research has necessarily focused more on extremism. There had been an “unprecedented” escalation of IS-inspired, radicalised young people in the past 18 months, the former head of Monash University’s Global Terrorism Research Centre said. School-aged males swept up in sophisticated social media and social networks have flown out to serve IS in Syria and Iraq before their families
Numan Haider was probably radicalised prior to stabbing police officers in September 2014, a coroner's court was told. had a whiff of what was happening. Others carried out deadly missions at home. Eighteen-year-old Haider was allegedly told by his family and ASIO officers to quit visiting Al-Furqan Islamic Centre bookshop in Springvale South and not to associate with a certain friend who attended Al-Furqan. Al-Furqan was formed by Sheik Harun Mehicevic who had earlier been thrown out of a Bosnian mosque in Noble Park. Like similar bookshops in Sydney and Brisbane, it hosted seminars that had become a concern to authorities. But despite a federal police raid in 2012, there had been a lack of clear evidence of terror threats. Professor Barton said a “troubled” Haider appeared to be part of a circle of friends who gathered at the bookstore, perhaps out of “youthful rebellion”. On one hand it was a “positive influence”, a place of belonging for young men, Professor Barton said. On the other, it was a type of secretive, reli-
gious cult that was suspicious of all outside and had “malign elements”. Mainstream mosques had “pushed” away such extremists and their attempts to take young members, and shunned them “into the fringes of the fringe” of Muslim society, Professor Barton told the court. This small band of extremists presented themselves as “bastions of purity” who knew “the truth”. Until IS rose, such extremism was slow to catch on. Young eyes and minds were attracted to an IS magazine Dabiq which was filled with “polished” articles, Professor Barton said and videos “leveraged a long line of keyboard warriors”. IS preyed on the power of “false friendship”, cut through family and mosque ties and exploited the “gap” between first-generation migrants and their children. All personal struggles were part of a “cosmic conspiracy”, it said. Professor Barton described it as a “zero to hero” thing. “You’ve done things you’re ashamed of and
have a sense of failure but you can redeem all that. “You (can) go out tomorrow morning, you’ll die and die a hero.” Two weeks before Haider was shot he visited Bankstown where the notorious Al-Risalah Islamic Centre was based. The centre had been linked to recruiting young males to join IS in the Middle East combat zone. Professor Barton said Al-Furqan had an unclear but not inconsequential connection with the Sydney centre. “It wasn’t until this case (Haider’s death) that the severity of those concerns became clear.” Haider’s family had fled as refugees from the Taliban in Afghanistan more than a decade earlier. Yet Haider’s Facebook post on 18 September 2014 - less than a week before his demise echoed IS-style fundamentalism. Above it was a photo of Haider in camouflage, a balaclava and holding a Shahada banner. 1218628-ACM09-16

have still reached those most susceptible to the ideas. He added that the media should think more about its use of IS images. The day before Haider fatefully attacked police, his passport was cancelled. His parents earlier told the Coroners’ Court that this decision greatly upset Haider as did the police search of his room. The parents told the court they had plans to fly with Haider to Germany and Afghanistan to meet relatives and find him a bride. So what is the “no simple, easy” solution? How should another Haider tragedy be averted? Professor Barton said it was a matter of specifically training teachers, injecting youth workers into Muslim communities and having young people looking out for their troubled peers. It was important to publicise the three signs of a radicalised person. They significantly change friend groups, suddenly adopt extreme ideas and start behaving in a lawless, transgressive manner. The approach should be the same as helping a young person through substance abuse, mental illness, relationship problems or sex abuse. “This is about duty of care and the welfare of the young person,” Professor Barton told the court. “It should be done quietly with no stigma, no pre-judgement.” A government-led campaign was unlikely to be effective, he said. “It’s not what government does well.” Besides, radicalised teens are bound not to listen to that particular messenger, he said. The inquest continues.

CASEY police have reassured the community after several shootings in the last week. Shooting incidents have been reported in Narre Warren South, Hallam, and Noble Park North in the last seven days, while police are also investigating reports a man was seen brandishing a shotgun in Endeavour Hills. While Detective Senior Sergeant Rob Clark acknowledged more gun incidents than usual had occurred “of late” in the region, and were being treated with concern by police, he said it was more of an “anomaly”. “We take all firearm crimes seriously,” he said. “If the public is involved in anything like that, take care of your safety. “We’ll investigate it as thoroughly and diligently as we can.” Detectives are investigating after a bullet was fired into a van parked outside a Narre

about midnight on the same night. A 25-year-old Endeavour Hills man received a minor injury, a police spokesman said. Police are also investigating a bizarre incident in which a man was threatened with a shotgun before he had a shotgun shell thrown at him. The victim was riding his push bike along Power Road in Endeavour Hills when a dark blue Holden Commodore VT pulled up alongside him about 7.40pm on Friday 11 March. The car’s front passenger then pointed a shotgun barrel out of the window and yelled at the victim “You’re lucky!” The man kept yelling before one of the car’s occupants then threw a shotgun shell at the victim. The car then sped off, turning left onto Heatherton Road. Anyone with information on any of these incidents is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

It was reported to police about 1.30pm on Sunday 13 March, but the shot may have been fired in the days beforehand. There were no reports of injuries. Casey CIU detectives say up to five shots were fired at the Frawley Road house - with four striking the front windows - about 12.15am on Wednesday 9 March . A commenter on the post asked if Haider was going to kill Shias too. “Don’t worry bro I’m not going to kill you,” Haider replied. The timing was telling. It was posted just hours after a confrontation with police at Dandenong Plaza in which Haider raved and waved an Islamic flag. On the same day, large “dramatic” counterterrorist raids were launched in Sydney and Brisbane after an intercepted call sparked fears of a terror attack. The raids, filmed by news crews, presented as “heavy handed”, Professor Barton said. It distressed Muslims to see doors kicked down and women in nightwear pushed to the street before dawn. On Facebook, Haider described the AFP as declaring “war on Muslims”, warning his “brothers” at Furqan and Hallam mosques that they could be the next raid targets. “To ASIO and AFP go f*** yourself you dogs,” he posted. He was showing “solidarity” with IS or, at the least, with extremists, Professor Barton said. “It somehow makes it more justifiable (to target someone in uniform such as police). “They’re part of the state that’s against (them).” Two days later, a fatwa was issued worldwide by Islamic State’s spiritual leader. Professor Barton regarded it as a “tipping point” in the radicalisation campaign. The message was ‘if you can’t join IS in building its state then you’re obliged to fight “pretty much everyone”,’ he said. Professor Barton said even without intense media coverage of the fatwa, its message would

More than 3850 participants in more than 100 teams relayed on Friday 4 and Saturday 5 March, walking overnight to show that hope lives in Casey for those experiencing cancer. But the strength shown by local Casey community members was a public display of support for anyone in the City of Casey with a cancer experience. The money raised at Casey Relay for Life will help Cancer Council Victoria continue to provide programs including: - Funding some of Victoria’s brightest researchers and their cutting-edge projects each year to help detect, treat and beat cancer. - Important prevention programs like PapScreen Victoria, Quit and SunSmart to make sure people have all the information they need to cut their risk of cancer. A particular focus this year is on improving bowel screening rates, with the latest statistic showing that only 32.8 per cent of eligible people in the City of Casey participate. Stolen ute stripped, torched A STOLEN ute has been stripped and set on fire in Berwick. The Holden SS ute was set alight at the intersection of Hessell Road and Whistler Drive about 3.45am on Monday 14 March.

PERHAPS the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) sounds just too good to be true. How else to explain the hope-lined anxieties among a 100-strong audience at an NDIS information forum on 8 March? More than two years until the scheme’s rollout in Melbourne’s south east, NDIS representative Anne Skordus was there to soothe doubts. Funding would double, and at last people with a disability had more freedom to choose how to spend their funding, she said. There was “no maximum and no minimum” funding package, NDIS would not affect participants’ disability support pensions and there would be few application forms. There would no longer be a waiting list for funded equipment such as wheelchairs. There are possibilities outside the square that weren’t possible in the pre-NDIS era, as demonstrated by a story shared by a father. He told of getting a group of parents pooling together for a supported share-house for their kids. Long-suffering families told the forum how under the current system, their funding had “run out” several years too early, and how they’d received precious little respite. There was a whiff of doubt whether governments would retain a fully-funded NDIS. How would it help the drastic shortfall of supported accommodation, an audience member asked. “If we can’t do something to deliver ... for your brother and son to be supported without being reliant on mum and dad in their eighties, then we’ve failed and I’m determined not to fail,” Ms Skordus said. Another attendee asked if incompetent service providers would come in and create a ‘pink batts’ debacle. The government was still working on accreditation standards and safeguards, Ms Skordus said. A mum of an autistic son without government support said she was willing to move to an earlier rollout area, out of desperation.

Audience member ‘Ramona’ told Star News how her husband had given up work to look after their daughter full-time for the past 27 years. They receive no funding, not even a carer’s pension. Ramona says her daughter was struck by the rare Dravet Syndrome since being injected with a “triple” vaccine as an infant. She has severe epilepsy and highly specialised needs requiring 24/7 care. “The government says it’s your child. You look after her. “It’s not fair. My question is, will the NDIS pay us as carers and help us with respite?” Another mum told Star News that her autistic son’s $12,000 early-intervention funding had dried up several years early, even with the family
paying for services out of their own pocket. “Under the NDIS, we should be getting about $12,000 a year - the same amount that we get now for seven (years).” These families - and the expected more than 105,000 Victorians - still have to wait patiently for the scheme. In Greater Dandenong, Casey and Cardinia, the NDIS will start rolling out on 1 September 2018. It’s expected to take up to 12 further months for eligible people to enter the scheme. Federal Labor MP Clare O’Neil, who organised the forum, acknowledged people in the room had waited decades for a better system. “It’s impossible to conclude (the current system) is a good and a fair system. “In Australia people with a disability don’t get the resources they need to live an ordinary life.” She said MPs who wanted to cut the scheme were getting “punished politically”.

AN INNOVATIVE new braille fridge ‘map’ for the blind has been unveiled at Insight in Berwick. The braille fridge map, which aims to help blind and vision impaired children become more confident with food preparation and cooking, was launched at the Insight Education Centre in Enterprise Avenue last Wednesday 9 March. The food-finder map can be affixed to a fridge door and was developed by Monash University masters students Kate Garam and Judy Stampton, who were at last week’s launch along with the founder of Insight Alan Lachman. Ms Garam said the map was developed in response to the current low educational outcomes and poor employment prospects for blind people. “The ‘map’ is to encourage independence in the children, so they know exactly where food is in the fridge and can snack or even cook by themselves, or at least help cook,’ she said. “You would be amazed at

By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM CATHERINE Ritchie was too young to remember her first Pakenham Show. “Since I was born mum’s been taking me,� she said. “My favourite one would have to be last year’s show, it went so well. Every year it gets better and better - there’s always something new.� She is this year’s Senior Ambassador at the upcoming Parklea Pakenham District Agricultural and Horticultural Show. Junior and Senior ambassadors are elected by the society, and sent to regional competitions against ambassadors from other shows. This year’s Junior Show Ambassador, Meaghan Venables, said the dedication of Catherine and others inspired her to get involved. “Last year, after hearing what Cath did, I was inspired to do it myself,� she said. “The Scouts always have a marquee at the show, so I’ve always looked forward to it over the years.� Meaghan is involved in the local Scouting movement, and was awarded the Queen’s Scout Award at a ceremony on 28 February. In June, she will travel to Switzerland to represent Scouts Australia at the Kandersteg International Scout
Centre (KISC). Show president Geoff Young said that ambassadors were integral to the annual event, and invited anyone interested in running the Pakenham Show to get involved.
“If anyone has any ideas on what we can improve on or they want to join the group, we’re free and open to having new members on board,� he said. “The show is for everyone.�

SHEEP will make a return to the Pakenham Show in 2016. The annual agricultural and horticultural show will also offer visitors the chance to see ferret racing, poultry and goat competitions, alpacas and a Pakenham floorball exhibition. The Wally Wombat trail will keep the kids entertained and a bra competition will raise money for breast cancer. This year local identities will take part in a dunking machine and money raised will be donated to Beyondblue. Various local groups will present a range of displays, including Emerald Historical Machinery, Glenmac Tractors, the Berwick Woodworkers Club and Meccano and Hornby train exhibition. The Animals on the Move Jumbo Barn will delight animal lovers as will sheep shearing and milking demonstrations from local farmers. It wouldn’t be the show without the gumboot throw and other competitions will test skills in making paper planes and playing chess, with fabulous prizes up for grabs. Cars on display will take visitors back in time, ranging from 1930s classic right through to the sixties era. There will be vehicles for all tastes including hot rods, classics and customs. Some of the cars will be new to the Pakenham area so visitors should not miss the opportunity to view these classic machines. VCAL students from Pakenham Secondary College will partner with the Yarraville Trugo club to run a Trugo Clinic. They are excited to educate the community on the history of Melbourne’s own Trugo and hope

NOW in its 105th year, the Parklea Pakenham and District Agricultural and Horticultural Show is set to be the event of the year. The show is a celebration of the rich rural history of Pakenham, putting growing communities in the area in touch with their roots. The theme for the 2016 show is ‘Vintage’, taking visitors back to a simpler time with country-style activities for families to enjoy. There’s something for everyone with exhibitions including all your favourite farm animals, flowers and fresh produce, cooking, art and craft classes, rides, and entertainment. You can also show off your skills and win prizes by entering one of the many competitions including the biggest vegetable, scarecrow, photography, and Lego building. Major naming sponsor, Parklea is proud to support the show for its second year. Women tell their stories By GEORGIA WESTGARTH A PANEL of three Casey women had everyone thinking at this year’s International Women’s Day (IWD) Casey Multi-faith Network event. ‘Pledge For Parity’ was the worldwide theme on Tuesday 8 March, but Casey locals touched on ways families can empower their daughters, wives and girlfriends even more. Panellists, Casey multi-faith network president, Stephanie Saunders, Elaine Smith from the Victorian Immigrant and Refugee Women’s Coalition and Amena Ziard, a student at Monash University spoke on different issues affecting women of today. Secretary of the Casey multi-faith network, Naureen Choudhry said the warm and positive energy in the room was inspirational. “We had more than 80 people from all walks of life asking questions to the panel and we also had Year 11 students from Nossal High School present,” Ms Choudhry said. “It was fantastic to hear people’s passionate views on

women’s issues and the future of women’s equality.” Narre Warren North, international relations student Amena explained why she identifies as a feminist and how her early life in a male dominated, Saudi Arabia instilled in her a sense of resilience. Ms Saunders reminded the audience of the repercussions of sexualising women, expressing her distaste in men calling her names such as ‘darling’. “We need to be mindful of the terminology we use to address women, as casually calling them darling can sexualise them,” Ms Saunders said. Member of the Hampton
Park women’s friendship cafe, Eileen Smith, articulated the importance of providing a safe community environment for women of culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds. Stating that her vision for Australia is one where people of all backgrounds can get along with one another and lend a helping hand. Casey Inspector Paul Breen was also present at the inaugural Casey IWD forum along with guest speaker Freda Miriklis, Co-Chair of Commonwealth Businesswomen’s Network who spoke on advancing women in society and business.
Help for mums with multiple births
IT’S been 12 months since the St John of God Berwick Day Oncology Centre opened its doors at Kangan Drive, Berwick. Prior to the opening of the new facility, St John of God Berwick Hospital had provided oncology care in a five-bed unit at the Gibb Street Hospital where it identified the need for a larger facility to meet the growing demand in the local area. In 2014, some 1260 patients were treated in the Gibb Street Oncology Unit. It was also recognised that easy access to cancer treatment meant a higher chance at survival. “Cancer survival is improved by offering services that allow early diagnosis and improved access to treatment,” said Lisa Norman, SJOGBH CEO. “St John of God Berwick Hospital offered five chemotherapy chairs on site at our hospital from 2013 but demand for oncology services in the area had increased significantly and we responded to the needs of a growing community.” The 12-chair day oncology centre opened in early 2015 and is part of the specialist centre at 55 Kangan Drive, a facility that is also home to Radiation Oncology Victoria, St John of God Pathology, MIA Radiology and HPS Pharmacy, making it a hub for cutting edge cancer treatment. The new Day Oncology

Ms Norman also said the centre had the capacity to grow as required to 20 chairs. The organisation’s 118 local members, all seeing double and some triple, came together for Multiple Birth Awareness Week. Pakenham mum of triplets and CDMBA secretary Rebecca Leeuw said the week was about ensuring all families knew where they could find help and support in what could be a daunting experience. “It’s imperative to have the experience and advice available to new parents because having two or more babies at once is obviously very different to having one,” Ms Leeuw said. “It’s trickier logistically to get around and do things and it’s hard to settle two or more crying babies at once.” Ms Leeuw said the support of local, experienced parents comes in handy emotionally as well. “Especially those first few months there’s a higher risk multiple birth babies will need to stay in hospital longer and not all prospective parents are ready for that,” she said. Hop in for a grand effort AN artistic mob of kangaroos will welcome patrons into the sixth annual Casey-Cardinia Grand Art Exhibition at the Cardinia Cultural Centre from 18-20 March. The event will showcase the finest art and woodart by leading Victorian artists, featuring nearly 600 exhibits from Victoria, Northern New South Wales and Tasmania. The 15 kangaroos created by David Doyle will be a feature at the entrance and will take guests into the exhibition, which will include amazing contemporary and avant garde paintings alongside the best traditional paintings and incredible sculptures and woodart.
Four leading Victorian artists will demonstrate their skills and art on Saturday 19 March: 11am Australian Artists Colour Pencil Society president Karina Griffiths; 1pm leading Victorian pastel artist and art gallery owner Lyn Mellady; 3pm internationally accredited oils and acrylics wildlife artist Eric Shepherd. On Sunday Glo Edkins will be doing portrait sketches with charcoal. There will also be demonstrations in woodart, scratchboard, color pencil and wood burning throughout the exhibition. Emerging artists will exhibit their works and patrons can pick up fine art before these
artists become well known and recognised. Entry to the exhibition is adults $7 school students $3 and includes admission to the demonstrations. The exhibition is not a fundraising event and is organised by Provenance Artists a not for profit society of local artists who paint at their two studios in Pakenham and Berwick Springs. Turning wood into art a solid effort THE Berwick District Woodworkers Club is again partnering with Provenance Artists to present the Woodart section of the Casey/Cardinia Grand Art Show. Now in its third year, the Woodart section continues to grow. The number of entries has increased by more than 30 per cent on last year’s show and covers a wide spectrum of high quality wood art. As well as the exhibition pieces, a range of other work from club members and exhibitors will be on display and for sale at discounted rates.
Club members will provide scroll saw and woodturning demonstrations throughout the show and members of the Marquetry Society of Victoria will be on hand on the Saturday to demonstrate this ancient and intricate woodart discipline. Club president Len Preece and Woodart coordinator John McMahon are excited to present the exhibition, which they say is designed not only to attract experienced woodart practitioners, but also encourage novice and less experienced woodartists to display their work. “This show is unique in Victoria, in that no
other art show includes a dedicated woodart section,“ Mr Preece said. “It provides a unique opportunity to showcase fine woodwork of all kinds and to show that this is as much an art form as pottery, glasswork, and sculpture.“ The Berwick District Woodworkers clubrooms and workshops are located at the Old Cheese Factory, Homestead Road Berwick, and are open Monday to Friday between 9am and 1pm. Flying skiers ramp it up By RUSSELL BENNETT SIBLING waterskiing sensations Jack and Bailey Christie have taken their craft to even dizzier new heights, with a series of records and personal best achievements to their names over recent months. When the Gazette last caught up with the Pakenham brothers in September they had already been named in a preliminary squad to compete at the 2016 Junior World Championships, while Jack was believed to be the youngest competitor to take part in all three events at the prestigious Moomba competition on the Yarra River. He has since achieved the best under-17 boys slalom score that has ever been skied in New Zealand by anyone in the world, and was named Junior Moomba Slalom Champion earlier this month. His main goal now is to make the final team for the Junior Worlds. “Considering it’s my first year in the under-17s, I would like to get gold in slalom, either gold or silver in trick, and the same for jump,” he said. “I would like to improve on my state record that I broke in slalom too.” This season Jack has already broken a state slalom record and is well on the way to giving the Australian record a nudge. At one of his tournaments in February, he qualified to ski up a division - in the open men’s class against the best waterskiers in Australia. This is someone who is already skiing in the under-17s as a 15-year-old. Of his past 12 months, Jack said: “I reckon it’s gone pretty well. “Of course everyone is always going to want a little bit more but I think I’ve improved a lot. “It’s my first year in under-17s so

I’ve gone up to 58 km/h in the 17s, fast at the jump, and potentially a steeper jump which will all help me go further and ski better. “Now that I’ve gone up an age, I’m ranked 10th in Australia - in open men’s. “In the world for my age I’m in the top 10 and at the moment I’m learning my fourth flip - it’s a flip where I land backwards. There’s also toe tricking where I hold the handle with my toes.”

Slalom is Jack’s favourite event and he has a clear-cut goal of one day being the number one slalom skier in the world. Younger brother Bailey - ever the perfectionist - said he hasn’t skied as well as he’d like to in some tournaments over the past 12 months ... but he still represented his country in New Zealand. “One of my goals is to win gold in trick at nationals and, hopefully, slalom,” Bailey said of his goals for the
next year. In a particularly short season, both boys shone. They brought home eight medals between them from New Zealand, with Bailey claiming two golds and two silvers and Jack three golds and a silver. They’re coached by two of the best in the sport - Tim Bradstreet and the jump world champion who’s just broken the women’s world record Jacinta Carroll.
They have a range of committed sponsors, including Voyage Fitness at Pakenham, HO Skis, D3 Skis, Intensity, Headzone, Bitu Mill, Mailbu and Regal Marine. Without their support they wouldn’t be able to compete on the big stage. The boys’ school, Beaconhills College, has also been particularly supportive with their teachers helping them out with work they missed while they were competing.

Stirling Silverbacks on the rise By RUSSELL BENNETT THE rapid rise of the Pakenham Silverbacks has continued, with the local gridiron club’s women’s team coming away with its first ever win on the weekend. In a local derby at Heatherbrae Reserve in Officer, the Silverbacks’ women’s side - playing in its debut season - prevailed 20-6 over local rivals, the Berwick Miners Diamonds. The result keeps the Silverbacks well and truly within reach of a playoff berth at the halfway point of the new season. They’re currently two points clear of the Croydon Rangers in fourth spot on the eight-team ladder. The Silverbacks gelled better as a team unit on Sunday than they had all season to that point and were a dominant force from the opening drive of the game. The defence put up a great effort with defensive tackle Lema Laumua taking an interception almost all the way to the end zone. The offence, in particular, switched on with Lydia Patua and Sam Kelly piling on plenty of yards, Jess Jhajj and Jenna Wallace making confident receptions, and
Iesha Taputu scoring her first touchdown with a QB sneak. The Silverbacks’ juniors dominated their clash with the Western Crusaders 20-0 in the morning game at Heatherbrae, also on Sunday, and never showed any signs of letting up. Coach Leed Wesolowski said the result was largely down to his side’s defensive prowess. “The defensive line put pressure on their quarterback all day and, combined with tight coverage from the defensive backs, allowed for few catches,” he said. “Hard running from the running backs set us up for a good win.” Fa’a Mulipola rushed from fullback to score for the Silverbacks while James Avia had a QB sneak and Febricko Addi took a catch in the end zone. Mitch Farrant made a tackle for a safety and also intercepted a ball, running it back 40 yards to set up a touchdown drive. Captain Chevy Edwards was a fearless leader on defence with one particular play - a blindside sack of the opposition quarterback - drawing a rapturous cheer from the sidelines.

Spicer’s leading the way By JARROD POTTER WGCA DISTRICT REVIEW - GRAND FINAL IN FRONT of its own at Pakenham Upper Reserve, Pakenham Upper/ Toomuc (304) etched one of the great innings into the record books to knock off Clyde (167). Make no bones about their victory - the Yabbies knocked off all the other finalists in the last three rounds of the season to claim the cup and book a ticket to WGCA Premier for 2016/17. It began strongly for the visitors as Kyle Brooke (3/72), Dean Williams (1/65) and Pat Lawson (2/43) all struck early but Clyde’s early inroads were soon smashed apart by the rampaging Ben Spicer (140). Spicer notched his fourth ton of the year and did it on the biggest stage yet. He took apart the top tier attack as his skyrocketing innings smashed Clyde around the hills - belting 27 fours and a six to boot. Taking his tally to 745 runs for the year, Spicer was sublime in league with the skipper Scott Clark (43) as the tandem let fire with a hellacious display. Their 109-run stand turned the tables as the Yabbies’ main-men stood strong and defied anything Clyde could muster. Such was Spicer’s fury that his innings came to an end in the 51st over - leaving plenty of pain to come for the visitors. Rory Gilliatte (48) continued the hit-and-giggle antics - belting a number of fours after avoiding injury from a “ball-on-box” incident. With 304 on the board, off a stag-

gering 68.1 overs, it would’ve taken a miracle for Clyde to fight its way into the match. It was a slow-and-steady response from the Lineham Oval legion, taking its time to get set at the crease ... but that soon changed as Nick Fairbank (5/39) got stuck in next. The third of PUT’s Team of the Year inductees had the Cougars by the throat as he almost claimed a hat-trick, just missing the glove of Daniel Walton (2) after picking up Glen Tuckwell (12) and Bilal Abbas (0) earlier that over. While Fairbank went about his destructive efforts from the bowler’s crease, John Simpson (67) was the rock that held everything else together. Unfortunately for the Clyde cham-

Kane Avard (33no) held the ship together as long as he could but in the end Pakenham Upper/Toomuc seared through the remaining Cougars to clinch the title. “Just over the moon - after the game I just said to the boys in the speech, in front of the two teams, that we’re far from the most talented team in the competition,” Clark said. “But we’ve got more heart and more dedication and the boys worked harder than any 10 blokes I know. “They thoroughly deserved it and blokes like Ben Jarred - 25 years at the
club and that’s his first premiership he teared up when we won and Benny Clough has never played in a winning flag. “I’ve played in a winning one before, but this one meant more to these blokes, so it’s unreal.” Clark praised Spicer and had tickets to the best vantage point as he watched the carnage from the non-strikers end. “He’s an absolute superstar - I think obviously his runs just speak for itself, he’s been the best bat in the comp this season by a long way,” Clark said. “To make a chanceless 140 in a grand final and the way he goes about it and the timing - he’s so controlled and that’s the fourth time he’s done it this year so it’s no fluke.”
The Yabbies will return to Premier after the emphatic victory, ending a two-year stint in District after the side’s exit from the top ranks in 2013/14 and Clark believes they can hold their own in the higher grade with a bit more recruiting. “That was my goal when I came to the club. “Talking to Brett Carey when I went to the club, first thing I wanted to do was get that winning culture back,” Clark said. “We definitely need to pick up a couple, I think, obviously it’s a pretty big step but I think it’s just depth that’s the difference. “If we can get one or two bowlers and one or two top order bats then we’d go alright.”

Lions win a real thriller By RUSSELL BENNETT WGCA PREMIER - GRAND FINAL REVIEW JACK Anning couldn’t sit still late on Sunday afternoon as the tension of a Premier grand final conclusion arrived much faster than the light began to fade. He and Jack Ryan were the next two to bat and their anxiousness was etched all over their faces. Ryan vocalised his nerves, cheering his side with every run, while Anning’s superstitious scoreboard adjustments became more frequent with the passing of every over. At 3.45pm their side was in the box seat at 3/113 - chasing just 218 for victory and to cap off a rare unbeaten season with a premiership flag. Not since Beaconsfield knocked off Cardinia for the 2010/11 flag had a top side gone all the way through a campaign undefeated. But Kooweerup was never going to just hand its crown over - not without one hell of a fight. Batting was far from easy on day one, with Chris Smith (1/37) and Russell Lehman (2/59 from a staggering 35 overs) tying the Demons down. Jess Mathers (49) top-scored with a confident, counter-punching knock which would have been even more significant had the Lions not forfeited the chance to take a swag of early wickets - through gut-wrenching no-balls and dropped catches. Chris O’Hara (41) hardly played the most attractive of innings - he was given key lifelines early and struggled to pierce the field from that point on. But he refused to throw his wicket away. With the heart of a lion he dug in and, along with Mathers and fellow big-name recruit Jake Bardwell (34), was a huge part of the reason for their side posting a 200-plus target. Jason Williams (5/22) was the difference-maker late on the first day’s play - removing all five of the Demons’ final five wickets.
But the ebbs and flows in this game’s momentum still had their biggest extremes to come. From 3.45 on Sunday, the following two hours produced some of the most gripping cricket of the Premier era. The Lions stumbled to 4/122 when Mathers and O’Hara - the two biggest workhorses of the game for the Demons - combined to dismiss Russell Lehman for 15. Then Pakenham slipped a little further again - with skipper Dom Paynter, who was the picture of positivity in trying to get on with the run chase, departing off a top edge for 36. The very next ball - disaster for the home side, as Williams was given out leg-before to Mathers. It was the first controversial decision of the game, and just like that, Kooweerup wasn’t just back to level pegging - the reigning Premiers were ahead in the contest and looking to keep the Lions down for the count. O’Hara and Mathers applied the clamps with the ball, before an inspired piece of captaincy saw Chris Bright move long-on and long-off back setting a trap for Sean Gramc (12) to fall into off O’Hara’s bowling. At 7/146, Pakenham still needed 72 for victory. The Demons and their faithful were up and about - they could smell blood. Anning and Ryan would be the next into battle - forced to step out into the cauldron of pressure that the Demons have made their reputations in on the final day of the season. But all season the Lions have been as good as the sum of their parts ... unbelievably good. Rob Elston and Ben Shipperd didn’t even walk out to the crease until numbers seven and eight respectively - a fact that almost seems unfair given their solidified reputations as gun batsmen. They held strong, as if their lives depended on it, before finally seeing off O’Hara and Mathers and finding a way past Cody Miller and Matt
Davey in the dying overs. A three-wicket win had never been so thrilling, and the pair - much like Lehman earlier in the game - had proven that it’s not the run of form that counts. It’s being able to produce in the biggest moments on the biggest stage. Ryan and Anning were on the edge of their seats right until the final ball when, suddenly, they erupted with the likes of Paynter and Williams. At 7/218 that nervousness was gone - in its place just utter jubilation. What a finish. Paynter knew that if his side was to cap off its unbeaten season with a premiership, his men had to show the courage of their convictions - to take it right up to one of the greatest sides in the history of the competition. Of course, plenty in Pakenham’s chase - including Paynter, himself, ultimately - would come undone trying to keep the innings moving forward. But it was the courage shown by two, albeit proven, newcomers to the side - Elston (34 not out) and Shipperd (47 not out) - that would take the Lions home. “For those of us who’ve been d***ed by them every time in finals - most times we’ve beaten them throughout the year but then lost the final,” Paynter said of Kooweerup straight after the game, a picture sheer jubilation etched across his face. “We had to get that done, because it just wouldn’t feel right otherwise. “They’re just that good, and they’ve defended scores of less than 150 before.” There are so many reasons to be impressed with Paynter as a cricketer and a leader, but the ones that stood out most on Sunday were his humility in victory and the respect he showed to the vanquished Demons. “Going through an undefeated season means nothing,” he said. “For us we hadn’t done anything until we’d beaten them in a final.”
