Fatal hit probed By MEGAN OGLE NOOSA Police are appealing to the public for information regarding a spate of incidents involving a ute and cyclists in Noosa, with one altercation ending in the death of a 42-year-old man in Eumundi. Police received a complaint on Monday afternoon from a cyclist who alleged two men harassed and threatened him while he was cycling west bound along Gympie Terrace, Noosaville.

It is alleged the same ute, a white Great Wall utility, was later involved in a fatal collision claiming the life of a 42-year-old cyclist in Eumundi. Emergency crews were called to Eumundi Noosa Road near the intersection of Grays Road shortly after 6pm Monday but the 42-year-old cyclist died at the scene. The alleged driver of the vehicle was arrested and taken into custody.

The driver had grazes on his forehead and chin when he appeared in custody in Maroochydore Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday morning. He faced charges of dangerous operation of a vehicle while adversely affected by an intoxicating substance, dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death while adversely affected by an intoxicating substance and assaulting or obstructing police in relation to the death of a 42-year-old cyclist.

The man did not apply for bail t and has been remanded in custody while a full brief of evidence is prepared. His matters are next due for mention in the same court on 12 May at 2pm. Chloe, who attends Tewantin State School, cut her 65cm long hair at assembly on Tuesday 14 March to raise funds for cancer research, and will donate her ponytail to the Prin-

cess Charlotte Foundation. Chloe’s mum Belinda Wicks said the fund-raiser marks Chloe’s third haircut which was performed by trained hairdresser cum librarian Coogin. Ms Wicks said Chloe was inspired after watching a video of another young girl donating her hair to a charity and insisted on doing the same. “Chloe is an inspiration,

she feels that she has so much hair that she can share it with someone that has lost their hair due to cancer treatment,” Ms Wicks said. Chloe was joined on stage by the school mascot Pelican Pete and was cheered on by her peers and staff as she lopped her locks. “It feels nice, it feels even better,” Chloe said of her new short hair.

A COMMERCIAL building in the heart of Noosa Junction has sold for more than $4.5 million. The commercial building features Westpac as the anchor tenant, who holds a long-term lease. The property sits on a 992sq m site at 1 Arcadia Street, Noosa Heads, and was sold off-market to a local investor by Ray White Commercial Noosa and Sunshine Coast North’s Paul Butler and Paul Forrest for a passing yield of 6.6 per cent. Mr Butler said the property was on the market for only the second time in its 30-year history and is currently returning net rental income of about $318,000 per annum. “This deal was done off-market between two of our existing

clients,” he said. “Westpac is the anchor tenant in the 725sq m building and has a lease running until August 2022.” Mr Butler said the buyer was a highly active local investor and the sale reflected the confidence in the Noosa Junction retail precinct. Mr Forrest said the property included 10 tenancies ranging in size from 36sq m to 184sq m. “Besides the Westpac bank branch, the tenancies include a mixture of food outlets, fashion and travel businesses,” he said. “The property enjoys a good level of pedestrian traffic flow and will also benefit from the future redevelopment of the nearby former Noosa Heads Bowls Club site by Coles, which is situated directly opposite.”

Holiday homes take a toll By MEGAN OGLE LOCAL resort managers are calling on council to act now and protect Noosa’s booming tourist industry. Noosa River Retreat Resort manager Andrea Stokje said a growing number of permanent residents in holiday accommodation was greatly affecting Noosa’s tourism industry and putting resort managers out of business. “The number of permanent residents, either owner occupiers or per-

manent tenants, who are taking up residency in holiday accommodation has been increasing at an alarming rate over the past three years,” Ms Stokje said. “This doesn’t just affect the accommodation industry, but the whole community, all the other small businesses that benefit from tourism. “With our industry the effect every time a permanent resident takes up residence in the property we manage is that we lose income and our business value decreases.”

Noosa Keys Resort manager Chris Pullin shares Ms Stokje’s concerns saying permanent residents in holiday accommodation meant fewer beds for tourists and less income for resort managers and tourist operators. “Unemployment will go through the roof and council will lose most of its tourist funding from governments,” he said. “This town has no other industry apart from tourism and if there is nowhere affordable to stay no-one will come.

“The council needs to protect the tourism industry so it continues to create jobs and business opportunities for the area and make plans for affordable housing to accommodate residents outside of the resorts and holiday houses. “We are now a worldwide tourist destination and our popularity is growing at a greater rate than most places in Australia. “It would be disappointing to start turning visitors away now because we can’t accommodate them.”

A FATHER is determined to leave a positive legacy after being diagnosed with a terminal illness. Wayne Patterson, author of The Fat Rabbit series, is making every day count after last year being diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND) at age 58. MND has no known cause, treatment or cure and attacks the limbs and breathing but leaves the mind intact. “MND can start with the feet and work up or at the throat and move down, which is how it is affecting me,” Wayne said. “My voice is deteriorating and will soon go forever. I may not live to see my grandchildren or be able to pass on stories that my children have grown up with. “But my creed has always been to make the best of the hand that you have been dealt.”

Wayne decided to pen an eightbook series, The Fat White Rabbit, based on a character he created at age 15 as a legacy to his children and an opportunity for other parents, especially dads, to read to their kids. “Life is precious and short, the years when your children are young especially so,” Wayne said. “One of the most valuable things a dad can do is read to his kids.” The Queensland launch will be a book signing at Annie’s Books at Peregian, 10am on Sunday 20 March. Jetty issue drags on By MEGAN OGLE A LOCAL jetty-owner has slammed Noosa Council for a lack of consultation on potential repairs to be carried out on a damaged footpath which borders his privately owned jetty. Kevin Driscoll staged a protest against claims to demolish the jetty located on Williams Street last year after he claimed a faulty footpath caused damage to his private property. More than a year on and Mr Driscoll is still in limbo as to council’s plans regarding the repair of the footpath which, he says, restricts his ability to repair his jetty. “I know Noosa Council has plans for the footpath which will change the wall in front of my jetty, but no-one has consulted with me,” Mr Driscoll said. “I have plans for my jetty ready to go, but I haven’t been able to build anything as council would not tell me their plans for the footpath which directly affects my jetty. “Council has been very arrogant; they should have consulted with me and not hindered me for so long.” Mr Driscoll, who has owned the jetty for over 23 years, said he believed the council was planning to turn the area into a shared zone, which, he said, was potentially dangerous, as well as change the face of the wall adjacent to his jetty which would mean a “substantial increase” to rebuilding costs.

INBRIEF St Patrick’s Day NOOSA police are appealing to the public to mind their manners this St Patrick’s Day. Noosa Heads officer-in-charge Senior Sergeant Steve McReight said although those celebrating the day are usually well behaved, he reminds people to have fun but not at the expense of others. “If you’re going to drink make sure you designate a driver and make sure you look after your mates,” he said. Police are expected to be out in force for St Patrick’s Day with officers pounding the beat and patrolling the roads.

House fire EMERGENCY crews were called to a house fire in Cooroibah Monday afternoon after an elderly couple’s attempts to extinguish a fire in their study failed. The fire started in the couple’s study, and after attempts to douse the flames with buckets of water failed, emergency crews were called to attend the scene. The elderly woman said she could smell smoke and followed the scent to the study where filing cabinets of “hoarded paperwork” were on fire. Four emergency crews attended the scene and no-one was injured. The fire is not being treated as suspicious.

A STUDENT has been reunited with his iPad, thanks to the collaboration of local businesses and Noosa Heads police. A 16-year-old student accidentally left his iPad on the counter of a store in the Civic Shopping Centre which was picked up by a male and female suspect who have now been charged with multiple offences. The local business worked with the police in providing CCTV footage of the incident.

Shed ahead of its time THE Pomona Men’s Shed is two years ahead of schedule, thanks to new water and sewerage connections. The newly formed Men’s Shed Pomona has been busy establishing a formal meeting space and was given a helping hand by Unitywater this year. Unitywater helped to connect water and sewerage facilities at the newly leased unoccupied shed at the old forestry depot at Pomona, meaning the group could move in quicker than expected. Unitywater CEO George Theo said the company was more than happy to help. “We wanted to do whatever we could to help Men’s Shed Pomona get off the ground sooner rather than later,” he said.

“Men’s sheds play such an important role in our society as they provide places for men to meet, relax and socialise. “They provide equipment and resources that allow members to contribute to community projects while sharing knowledge or learning new manual skills. “I expect Men’s Shed Pomona to be a real hub for the community, offering local men mateship and support. “Unitywater is proud to offer its assistance.” Men’s Shed president Doug Bettens said shed members would make wooden nesting boxes for wildlife in return for Unitywater’s generous partnership. The nesting boxes will be placed in bushland surrounding some

of Unitywater’s sewage treatment plants. “The Unitywater partnership has contributed greatly to us being in a position to start renovating the shed some two years ahead of our initial planning,” Mr Bettens said. “Together, with funding from other sources, we can now finish building the kitchen, toilet, lounge area and metal shed. “Our construction phase should be completed in the first half of this year, and then we will shift to a new building phase, this time focused on membership. “We are planning a series of open days later in the year where we hope to attract lots of new members.”

SHERYL is not your average zumba instructor, with the dance enthusiast often shaking her tail feather for a good cause. Sheryl and members from her zumba class are often seen dancing in the streets to raise funds for local charities, and these holidays she has her music pointed at kids who love to move. After being inspired by her son, Sheryl has decided to hold a free zumba session for kids with special needs and their siblings at the Noosa Leisure Centre these coming holidays. Sheryl said she had instructed zumba at her son Ben’s school previously and said the kids always enjoyed it. “My eldest son has mild autism, so I am fortunate enough to be around kids with special needs and love working with them,” she said. “I wanted to offer a free class to kids with special needs so they have something fun to look forward to in the holidays and to give the parents something that is fun for their child with no expense as costs can add up for these families.”

Sheryl's zumba class are ready to dance up a storm these school holidays. “I have a few of my regular zumba goers coming along to help the kids with the steps and we are all looking forward to seeing the smiles on the kids’ faces.” Sheryl said it wasn’t important whether the children followed the moves or not and that she just wanted them to

Bolton’s clean race call By MEGAN OGLE MAYORAL candidate Sandy Bolton is giving bullies the boot and calling for a change in election culture. Cr Bolton said while there had been many positive moments during the electoral race, a number of candidates had been subjected to smear campaigns and intimidation tactics, leaving a bitter taste in Noosa’s mouth. “It has been wonderful to see fabulous rapport between candidates, and there have been many joyous occasions during the campaign, however the flip side has been poor behaviour by a few overzealous supporters during these elections,” Cr Bolton said. “There have been reports from a number of candidates that they have been subjected to email and media smear campaigns, pulling

down of election signs, harassment through Facebook and intimidation at forums.” Cr Bolton said the impact of such behaviour was long lasting and far reaching and had no place in Noosa. “Even though this may seem minor in comparison to what has been happening in other shires, the impacts in a small, close-knit community such as ours can be detrimental to many, including the candidates and their supporters, friends, parents and children,” she said. “The broader impact of negative supporter behaviour is distasteful, and has the capacity to negatively impact beneficial partnerships between community organisations where members become involved in politics.” Cr Bolton said the fear of being targeted was enough to put off

potential new candidates, particularly women. “From discussions I’ve had with many people who have shown an interest in becoming a councillor, the expense, the time off work to campaign, the stresses they see associated with public life, loss of privacy and public speaking are all common reasons for not nominating for an election,” she said. “There is also an element of fear of being targeted by unknown agitators and known repeat offenders when they witness the tactics utilised in elections at all levels of government.” Cr Bolton said passionate supporters of candidates could sometimes get caught up in the heat of the campaign and called on campaign managers and candidates to put a stop to the behaviour. “Candidates can have some very passionate supporters who

sometimes forget in the heat of the campaign what the end goal is, and that is to deliver the very best outcome for our community through a democratic process that is only available if there is more than one candidate,” she said. “Communication, empathy and respect for differing opinions are the key to strong and united communities, and best practice elections. Maybe a zero tolerance approach by campaign managers and candidates to unruly supporter behaviour in future elections might make nominating for an election more attractive to future candidates and create a wider choice to the voters.” “After all, we have programs in schools and the broader community about bullying and intimidation and as prospective leaders in our communities we should be setting the example.”

Greens expose some dirty, dirty politics GREENS Councillor candidate Aaron White played dirty at the Marine Plastics Pollution Forum held at The J last Wednesday night (9 March) as he had a dig at Noosa Council’s failure to adequately fund stormwater infrastructure. Queensland Greens Senator Larissa Waters hosted the event and around 100 people heard from a line-up of speakers including Cr Joe Jurisevic, representatives from Boomerang Alliance, Noosa Community Biosphere Association, Surfrider Foundation, Sunshine Coast Environment Council and special guest, Tasmanian Greens

Mr White slammed council when he took to the floor, saying he believed plastic and other pollution entering creeks and rivers during weather events, may be putting Noosa’s “enviable” Healthy Waterways A-rating at risk. “I have concerns with a Noosa Council Committee report tabled last month, showing across the shire, only $25,000 was spent maintaining stormwater Gross Pollution Traps (GPTs) and only 25 per cent of Bio Retention Basins had been audited in newer developments at the Civic, Noo-

sa Springs, RACV Resort and Doonella Estate,” he said. Tasmanian Greens Senator Peter Whish-Wilson, nicknamed the “Surfing Senator”, commended the Noosa community for their great work in reducing pollution on beaches and waterways. The Tasmanian Senator is visiting Queensland to attend hearings of his ‘Marine Plastic Pollution’ Senate inquiry, which outlines serious long-term issues, including plastics being ingested by marine life and ending up in the human food chain as seafood.

“I’m so pleased the environmentally proactive community here has an opportunity to vote for a great representative like Aaron to raise these issues and make sure the next Noosa Council does all it can to live up to its clean image,” Senator Whish-Wilson said. Mr White said he would support the recommendations put forward in council’s Planning and Organisation Committee report to allocate $550,000 from the Capital Works budget to address the stormwater issue.

Williams reveals campaign costs By MEGAN OGLE COUNCIL candidate Elaine Williams has openly declared her campaign funding in a bid to clarify community confusion. “There has been some confusion where members of the public are under the impression that rates or taxes are used for campaign signs and how to vote cards,” Ms Williams said. “These are most definitely paid for by the candidates.” Ms Williams said she had not received any donations or gifts towards her campaign, including from friends or family, which accumulated to $2748 with all expenses being paid from her savings. “These expenses include election signs, how to vote cards, information flyers, shirts

for volunteers, website and advertising and all money spent has been with local Noosa businesses,” she said. “To minimise waste and cost, I have only the bare minimum how to vote cards, and ask that voters please return them for reuse and recycling.” Ms Williams said she wanted to disclose her campaign finances in a bid for “transparency and clarity” and urged other candidates to do the same. “To date only one other candidate has publicly declared their total donations and expenses,” she said. “This is very important information for the voting public as it gives us insight into how much advantage one candidate has had over another.

Jurisevic makes recycle call By MEGAN OGLE COUNCILLOR Joe Jurisevic is urging voters to “do their homework” and seek “a different kind of sign” to guide their vote this election. “Check out the credentials of those you may choose to represent you [and] ask questions or email candidates,” Cr Jurisevic said. “Ensure that the candidates have been engaged with, and tried to make a difference to your community before standing to represent you and ensure your choices offer a mix of backgrounds to balance discussion in council once elected.” Cr Jurisevic, the passionate zero waste advocate, also slammed elaborate election campaigns, and has urged voters not to be swayed by “smiling faces”. “With the proliferation of Social Media [sic] the ability to search the internet for information, newspapers and television, does the public have to be subjected to countless self-promotional signs for candidates to be plastered all over public land?” he said. “I doubt voters will be swayed by the countless smiling faces and promises on signs that are planted to distract drivers on median strips and road sides. “Surely, they would be more drawn by a candidate’s credentials than how much is spent on election advertising and the ability to plaster it in every available space that can be found.” Cr Jurisevic said he had pledged a “no waste campaign” by reducing throw away flyers and reusing signage from his previous campaign. Cr Jurisevic asked voters to “recycle” him this year and said he planned to continue his work towards reducing waste. “I still want to focus on opportunities for enhancing waste minimization and resource recovery.” “I want to continue to improve recycling facilities in our region, and investigate the feasibility of locating a Material Recovery Facility for recyclables in our hinterland, which could provide job opportunities and produce a return to our community. “I aim to see reserves such as Heathland Drive at Sunshine Beach rehabilitated.” “I want to see Water Bottle Refill stations to reduce our reliance on plastic bottles introduced, and finally see public place recycle bins in the Hastings Street precinct with greater numbers across the shire.”

NOOSA Council staff members have something new in their tea rooms - Boomerang Bags. Boomerang Bags are re-useable bags made from recycled cloth and sewn by local volunteers who are busily producing thousands of the bags to provide to local residents for free. Council staff have been urged to ditch the plastic bag and bring their own re-useable bags from home, or use a Boomerang Bag when they need one. Staff member Cliona said Boomerang Bags were a way for residents to help reduce the stream of plastic bags headed for landfill. “After being disgusted at plastic bag disposal around the world, and then being shocked to see how quickly our own landfill is filling up with plastic bags, I spent a fortune buying the $2 re-useable supermarket bags because I kept forgetting to bring my own bags to the shops,” she said. “Now I just need to remember to take a Boomerang Bag with me when I leave the office at lunch time so that I don’t buy another bag I don’t need.” Staff member Cherie agreed with colleague Cliona saying she had taken steps to ditch plastic bags. “I have completely ditched using plastic bags as part of my new year’s resolutions,” she said. “To make sure that I stick with my plastic bag ban, I buy an environmental bag at the supermarket or shops every time that I forget to bring them. This quickly made me form a habit of taking re-useable bags everywhere I go.” Getting rid of plastic bags in the shire is written into the Noosa Council’s Towards Zero Waste program and the council is right behind the Boomerang Bag initiative. AFTER more than six months’ consultation with the local community the fate of the Rufous Street precinct has been decided. Peregian Beach will gain a digital hub to support new e-business ventures and mentor young people after the council approved the Rufous Street Precinct master plan on Thursday (10 March). Mayor Noel Playford said the finished product “answers the community’s call” for more green space and “supports digital enterprise” which he said was important to the local economy. “As well as serve as an incubator for digital businesses, this facility will link young people - our future entrepreneurs - with expert mentors and cuttingedge technology to provide them the skills and knowledge needed to launch their own start-ups,” he said. The master plan provides 4300 square metres of open space, a two-storey 750sqm digital hub with high-speed internet access, community building, car parking for Rufous Street and improved pedestrian access to the Peregian Beach village. The council intends to develop the site, which includes the former bowls club land, in two stages, beginning with the digital

More than 100 people turned out to have a say on the draft master plan when the council unveiled it last month. “Feedback from that event as well as that gathered during a two-week online consultation process has helped council refine the plans,” Cr Playford said. A digital hub is a highspeed-internet-equipped shared workspace where a wide range of users can work together with high growth digital businesses based onsite. With nothing similar offered in Peregian Beach currently, council research and economic analysis showed the facility to be viable considering growth in the Peregian Beach catchment. The council will finalise building designs, prepare a material change of use application and apply for grant funding to help finance the project in the next few months. “We may be eligible for various grants given this is a project with significant community and local business support and a strong emphasis on innovation and information technology, both of which are key local economic drivers,” Cr Playford said.

MY column today is completely aimed at the new Noosa, the mums and dads and the kids that will be our new generation. It is time to stop pampering to the retirees who have dominated Noosa’s landscape for the past 20 years. I - like many of you - have read, listened to and watched the wall of potential councillors tell us what they are going to do when they get voted in. Environment, high rise, lifestyle, industry and community have been the key words bounced around, again only if you vote them in. Noosa needs to change, and I mean change - Sandy Bolton will be the point of the arrow that locals need to fire to keep our area in tune with the rest of the Coast. Schools, sport, tourism, university, industry, infrastructure are all treated as one, by the outside world. What saddens me is that all but three Councillors - and none of the potential candidates - has mentioned local sport. It’s the common thread that we have had when growing up, some unfortunately don’t seem to care. Or maybe I should say, don’t understand how important playing local sport is to the fabric of type of person you grow into. Most young people play sport for the friendship and comradery that usually transcends over a lifetime. Plus the health aspect, and don’t forget some sports people sometimes make a living from the chosen field of endeavour. Yes I know some can only dream of playing

Don’t be a Bunny this Easter – Keep your Pet Safe from Chocolate It is approaching that time of the year when chocolate is stashed away in cupboards, and easter egg hunts are being planned. But our canine companions are more adept at smelling out these delicious treats than you or myself. Chocolate is derived from the cocoa tree, its seeds containing cocoa butter, which chocolate is made from. The cocoa butter contains high levels of a chemical called theobromine. Theobromine is what makes chocolate taste so good; but it’s also what makes chocolate so toxic to dogs. The darker the chocolate the higher concentrations of theobromine it contains. Hence the clinical signs of chocolate toxicity depend not only on the amount of chocolate ingested, but also the type of chocolate consumed. Chocolate toxicity is dose dependant, meaning the more the animal eats, the greater the clinical signs that are seen. Small doses of chocolate will produce vomiting and diarrhoea. With higher concentrations of chocolate, the clinical signs progress to elevated heart rates and electrical disturbances in the heart (arrhythmias), then to hyperexcitability states, tremors and seizures and potential death. Toxicity is not limited to dogs. All mammalian species are at risk of theobromine toxicity. The different species susceptibilities are related to how the toxin is broken down and removed by the body. Humans, rats and mice for example have very efficient metabolic pathways and are resistant to side effects and doses that would be fatal to a dog. Cats, on the other hand, rarely ingest chocolate as they don’t have very sensitive sweet taste receptors. So to avoid having a late night date at Animal Emergency Service over Easter, please place all chocolates in high cupboards and pick up after the children. If you are having an Easter hunt, count all the eggs that are recovered and lock the family pet up whilst the hunt is underway. But if mishaps happen, as they readily do, we are available at any time of the day or night at Animal Emergency Service over the long weekend. Treatment may involve giving your dog an injection of a drug to induce vomiting if the chocolate has been recently consumed. If your dog is more seriously affected, it may need to have a range of treatments performed such as emptying the stomach under anaesthetic, intra venous fluid therapy, and urinary catheterisation. So from the Animal Emergency Service, we wish you a happy and safe Easter long weekend, for you and your furry companion.

LETTERS Ugly election IT IS so disappointing to read the ugliness in the Letters to the Editor regarding mayoral candidates for the coming election. Supporters should speak about why their candidates are the best person for the job, not denigrate others. We are constantly reminded about the impacts of bullying and intimidation this has on people and communities. Why then do we allow this in our papers? What example does this set for children? I am sure all three candidates have good qualities however I have given my support to Sandy Bolton because of who she is and what she does on a daily basis. She has given organisations, including ours, so much assistance and has personally helped a number of our mums dealing with domestic violence while living with the stress of looking after their disabled sons or daughters. It is distressing to see supporters of another candidate writing total rubbish about Sandy to try and discredit her and the work that she does for political gain. Maybe they should spend some time with her, or talk to those who do, and know. Noosa is so much better than this and it is time that our media stop supporting this type of behaviour, and not just at election time. I’m sure anyone in this community would want a mayoral leader who has compassion, empathy and a real and genuine care for our people. Ken gets my vote I HAVE lived in the Noosa shire for 40 years, worked here all that time, raised a family here, been a member of numerous community organisations, and a councillor representing this community in both the Noosa Council and the Sunshine Coast Council for a total of 15 years. In all of this time I have never seen a greater need than now for there to be a change in Noosa Council. What this community needs from this election are elected representatives who are honest, have a passion and some clear vision for a positive future, have integrity and work ethic. Everyone’s candidate F BRANDT, (Noosa Today, 10 March) implies that because I have election signage outside certain businesses, that I must be the candidate for those people. Look at me, not the truth IN THE final days before a local government election, we’re familiar with the spectacle of candidates desperately hunting for headlines that might win some attention and a few votes. Truth and common sense are often the casualties as candidates entice the electorate to “look at me, look at me”. Candidate Ingrid Jackson appeared to be taking this low road in last week’s Noosa Today front page with her claims that Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation’s “governance seems muddled, and there is no transparency”. I’m not aware of any contact or approach the candidate has made to the foundation since it started operations eight months ago, so it’s difficult to know exactly what ‘transparency’ she seeks. The foundation reported to council last month as part of its funding agreement and it issues media releases when it has something to report. The candidate also claims the foundation appears to be “failing” at its “primary task” of

raising funds. Wrong again. The foundation’s constitution says its principal objects are “for the charitable purposes of protecting and enhancing the natural environment”. Even so, the foundation has secured almost $300,000 in external funds to add to $600,000 of Environment Levy funds and almost $1 million of in-kind contributions to fund six projects over the next three years. That includes major projects to reduce erosion in the Noosa River catchment and improve fish and prawn stocks in the river and lakes. All of this was revealed in local media last month. It’s difficult getting noticed in the heat and hyperbole of an election campaign but that’s no excuse for ignorant and unfounded criticism of volunteers who have done a tremendous amount of work in a short space of time. Exaggerated claims SAM Scanlon’s letter (Noosa Today, 10 March) makes a series of wrong claims. He says I joined the Friends of Noosa com-

mittee in January 2008. This is not true. I was invited by Jim Berardo to join the committee in August 2007. Mr Scanlon says I was not a paid up member of the organisation. When Friends of Noosa was established, they asked for a membership fee but the organisation rapidly came to the conclusion that it was better to have a free, open membership. I was on their mail list as a member from the time I joined the committee. It may be that I wasn’t on the final membership list in November 2012 because by that time I was representing Noosa on the Sunshine Coast Council. Mr Scanlon asks me to explain my leadership roles in the de-amalgamation movement. Here is a very brief summary. I documented the entire process in photographs, many of which have been used by newspapers, community groups, websites, in books etc. In 2009, I established the Greater Noosa Collective and an interactive website greaternoosa.com to push for de-amalgamation with inclusion of the EDV area.

Between October 2009 and January 2012 I wrote and published an email newsletter, The Noosa Gumshoe, which had de-amalgamation as its primary aim. I was a founding committee member of the Noosa Independence Alliance in 2010, and remained on that committee until I was elected to the Sunshine Coast Council (SCC) in 2012. I stood for the SCC on a de-amalgamation platform. The only candidate to replace a sitting councillor, my election was widely viewed as an endorsement for de-amalgamation. Whilst on the SCC, I spoke up on Noosa’s behalf at various meetings held between Local Government Minister Crisafulli and council. I argued within council for Noosa’s deamalgamation and took on the SCC mayor publicly over claims being made about costs and impacts. An all-out effort, including TV ads, was made to have Patricia Petersen elected as mayor. We asked then, as we do now, who is paying for all this and is there a hidden agenda. If candidates have nothing to hide, declare donations before pre-polling opens next week so that we the people of Noosa Shire can make an informed choice on who we give our vote to. Biosphere branding TO THE reference to Noosa Biosphere Backlash. I believe in the principle theory behind the biosphere is good. Scott Williams is quoted as saying the biosphere boost tourism in Noosa. What is the evidence to that statement? And continues on that the Europe visitors particular understand the economic and environmental benefits of being in a biosphere. Well Scott, if you have been travelling along the Croatia coastal towns and coast line and through the Adriatic sea, the damage that was done by the war back in 2000 in the biosphere regions and heritage list areas was horrendous. Did UNESCO provide any assistance - no! The allied forces were the ones that came to help the areas out. UNESO is an arm of the United Nations and no action was taken, it fell on deaf ears. So why do we belong to a left wing social academic organisation. We should be exporting not importing our environmental and economic ways in Noosa. Mr Horn’s statement about what can the biosphere do for you, but what you can do for the Noosa biosphere, that is fine but most people of the Noosa shire have not got a clue what is the a Noosa biosphere, is it NCBA, or NBFL. Go to the web site and more confusion. What about a good community communication program? The other way is get out of the UNESCO, go back to Noosa doing its own brand. Ray Kelly, Noosa.

Plan for the future WITH local government elections looming I hope that the people of the NSC area realise that many of the current NSC councillors are either members, married to members, or are affiliated with the Noosa Parks Association. During the past term many of these councillors have done exceptionally well at delivering many sizable grants to both the NPA and the Noosa Biosphere Reserve, of which we have seen absolutely no economic benefits for a business community that is faltering. Other community groups have been denied grants in favour of the NPA/NBRF. Clearly many of the current NSC councillors’ integrity is severely compromised and there had been major conflicts of interest. Noosa needs more than just an environmental plan - it needs an economic development plan to drive sustainability of existing local businesses. Noosa needs a new council that is not being run by the trustees of the NPA. Noosa needs councillors whose integrity is not compromised and are independent from the NPA and affiliated groups. People like Ray Kelly and Ken Coleman who are honest, reliable, community minded and have integrity. Steve Bennett, Noosa.

In two words - bloody disgraceful! Others in the room came to hear what the candidates had to offer having no doubt given thought to the opportunities being presented here on the Sunshine Coast. His biggest problem seems to be ‘time served’ on Friends of Noosa, instead of ‘action taken’, or ‘results achieved’. I served alongside Tony on FON and can set the record straight as follows. Tony was an integral part of FON from August 2007 until well into 2008. He and I both exited the committee which was being massively ‘side-tracked’ by a Labor party sympathiser and ex-public servant whose biggest aim was to drink cups of tea with peripheral Labor party time wasters. The point is, Tony was an extraordinary committee member, full of great ideas and ways to implement them. He has continued this form across subsequent gigs on the Sunshine Coast Council and now Noosa Council. He is, by a wide margin, the only mayoral candidate Noosa can trust with its future. Experience and skills WHEN weighing up what qualifies the candidates to represent the Noosa region as mayor I am looking for experience where it counts. Ray Kelly certainly has experience as a councillor but I am unsure of his leadership and management skills. I am not convinced that Tony Wellington has the qualities required for mayor. He states his experience as a councillor, being involved in de-amalgamation (like 80 per cent of Noosa locals), writing books and making DVDs qualify him for the position. I understand he wrote a newsletter denigrating Sunshine Coast Council and then worked for them. I wouldn’t want someone without honesty and integrity leading our local council. In contrast, Sandy Bolton has demonstrated experience in leadership, displays integrity and achieves what she sets out to do for her com-

IT WOULD be great if all environmental groups in the Noosa area could work together but with the recent attack by the secretary of the Noosa Parks Association Ingrid Jackson on the Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation, it would appear not. This is a pity, because there are many dedicated and knowledgeable people in NPA. I am sure that members of the reserve, Noosa Council, NICA, Landcare and the Bushcare groups, all have the best interests of our natural environment at heart. In to bat IT IS interesting to note that in spite of constant barrage from the press, TV and would-be voters, none of the candidates for the coming council elections has mentioned the bat problem, except in three cases and that was in passing. The bat problem has reached plague proportions, is causing a deluge of ill health in our community, is destroying local forests, is getting rid of local wildlife, is causing damage to property including houses, yards, rooves and cars and is making outdoor living impossible. Are we surprised that the issue is not on the agenda? No, we are not surprised. For four long years we, the residents of Wallace Park, have been begging, beseeching and pleading with the current council to do something about the bats but they have adopted a do nothing policy. Only three would-be councillors have mentioned the subject. They are Brian Stockwell, Ken Coleman and Mark Denham, and two of them claim that they have had experience with bats and have a remedy for them. There has not been one word from the current councillors. So those who are affected by the daily onslaught of bats should think about who you might vote for in the next council elections. Do not waste your vote this time. Now that the bats have spread to Gympie Terrace and Hasting Street, tourism, apart from health issues, the economy, not to mention Noosa’s reputation, may all be affected. K L Fielden, Tewantin.

Waving goodbye DURING the Noosa Festival of Surfing I entered in the over 65 event. The contest was to be held over one week at First Point, Noosa Beach. However, due to lack of swell and large tides they could not fit in the large amount of contestants that entered. So the powers to be sent all the “no name” long boarders to surf Access Eleven between the rock walls, where the conditions were appalling. Myself and others had got to the semi-reporcharge to surf at this break only to be told that if we got through this heat we would have to surf at this location for the repo final. On our schedule it was to be at First Point at midday, the officials had changed our times half an hour before out surf.

The gripe is the organizers had too many sponsor ridden events and novelty events and pro-surfing events to look after first and foremost, leaving out the genuine long boarder surfer last on the list. We all payed our $140 and should be treated equally. The surf festival should be what it started out as originally, a long board contest. I will not be surfing in the overcrowded Noosa Surf Festival again. Bobby Aitkin, Noosa.

Biosphere support I AM writing with some important clarifications to the front page story Lashing Out at the Biosphere (Noosa Today, 9 March). The headline distorted my message, misrepresenting my stance. In my media release I made no criticism of the biosphere - which I value and support. Also, in my media release I had been careful to differentiate between the Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation and the Noosa Parks Association (as many people confuse the two). I specifically wrote: “The Association was set up as the community counterpart to the Foundation and it’s performing well with few resources.” This statement was not published. Finally, to clarify any misunderstanding, I want to stress that I was speaking on my own behalf as an independent candidate standing for election in the interest of Noosa Shire residents. The article’s references to the Noosa Parks Association seemed to imply a possible linkage between my remarks and the NPA. This was and is not the case. Helping to keep the music going on A POPULAR music event is calling on local support to help keep the music pumping for 2016. East Coast Originals (ECO) has run the much-loved Peregian and Cooroy Originals for the past 15 years and is asking locals and tourists alike to dig deep and attend a fund-raiser to be held tomorrow. The Peregian Beach Hotel is hosting a free music event with four local

acts set to take to the stage including Christian Patey, The Perries, The Flumes and Brisbane reggae outfit Hemingway. A gold coin donation is all that is asked for supporters of the event, with plenty of raffles and spot prizes to give away on the night. Stone and Wood Brewery has also jumped on board by donating a “Karma Keg” with all proceeds going towards ECO.

Hosted on the second and fourth Sunday of every month, the Originals showcase local and touring bands for free in community parks. Operated by a small committee of passionate volunteers, the event relies on community support and donations to keep afloat. Peregian Originals volunteer Jade Keilty says music lovers who attend the events don’t realise their dona-

tions go straight to supporting the event. “What a lot of people at The Originals don’t realise is their $5 worth of raffle tickets really goes straight back to the event, to pay for the bands, the sound and to run The Originals each month,” she said. Chocolate Ripple Caramello Cheesecake Ingredients 250g cream cheese, cubed and softened 200g milk chocolate, melted 300ml tub thickened cream 250g packet plain chocolate biscuits (Ripple biscuits) 1/2 cup store bought salted caramel sauce or spread extra salted caramel, to serve Method Line the base and sides of a 20cm springform pan with cling wrap. Using an electric mixer, beat together the cream cheese and melted chocolate on medium speed, until combined. Add 1/2 cup of cream and beat for a further 2 minutes or until mixture has thickened slightly. Arrange one third of the biscuits over the base of the pan. Top with half of the chocolate cream mixture and dollop with caramel. Repeat another layer of biscuits, chocolate cream and caramel. Finish with remaining biscuits. Refrigerate for 4-6 hours to allow the mixture to set and biscuits to soften. Invert cake onto a serving plate and remove cling wrap. Beat remaining cream with an electric mixer until soft peaks form. Spoon on top of cake and drizzle with extra salted caramel sauce.

BOOIN Gari, the annual Indigenous festival is back for its ninth year and set to be better than ever with a jam-packed program celebrating a cultural immersion of music, traditional art and craft, and storytelling. Booin Gari, which means Come This Way in Gubbi Gubbi language, is hosted by United Synergies and will take place in the Noosaville Lions Park on Tuesday 5 April. The jam-packed day will include performances by Australia’s best Indigenous comedian Sean Choolburra, dynamic Torres Strait Islander Marcus Pedro and his Dance Kombat, The Floating Bridges and Yarwah. The free event will feature a range of guest presentations from local community artists and performers as well as workshops incorporating Indigenous art and culture. Mimburi Upper Mary Indigenous Corporation will be hosting a weaving circle and the Goombuckar Indigenous Cultural Bus will provide interactive storytelling and art activities throughout the day. Water activities are a highlight of the event, with the Buoyed Up children’s sailing program afloat on the Noosa River which is open to all children who want to try their hand at sailing. Local Gubbi Gubbi man Lyndon Davis will be telling stories about the river, and leading a Pikki Bean canoe craft workshop on the river bank. Similar to previous years, community services will provide displays and be available to provide community support information and Indigegear Bush Tucker Catering is providing a range of delicious Indigenous cuisine including kangaroo, emu and lemon myrtle products. SLOWLY but surely the tumult and the shouting starts to fade away. As I write it’s 36 hours since the 25th Laguna Real Estate Noosa Festival of Surfing concluded in great waves on First Point. The surf is still great, but every part of my body aches, the PA system is still pounding in my ears and I feel very, very old, so I’m sitting at my desk with one eye on the Quik Pro and one eye on the computer screen. What a week we had! Too many highlights to squeeze into a single column, too many stellar performances to recount, too many tough slogs up and down the beach as super-high tides forced us to use the beaches at Noosa West. So I’m just going to focus on a couple of things that floated my boat. One was the incredible camaraderie

between surfers of 20 competing countries, spearheaded by the visit of the Peruvian cultural group over the first few days. Sponsored by the Noosa National Surfing Reserve and The Cove Noosa, the appearances by Huevito Ucanan, “king of the caballitos” were almost as well received as the VetShop surfing dogs! Riding his ancient design reed board, Huevito proved to be the consummate showman and crowd-pleaser. Huevito, 1965 world champion Felipe Pomar (still a super-fit surfer at 72) and Carlos Antonio Ferrer were at the festival to represent the Huanchaco World Surfing Reserve in Peru, and, along with WSR chief executive Nik Strong-Cvetich and Gold Coast WSR chair Andrew McKinnon, to discuss with Noosa’s World Surf Reserve committee our application for the honour in 2018. The convivial Peruvians set the tone for all the internationals to have a blast in Noosa, none more so that the smiling Hawaiian wahines, led by world champ Honolua

POMONA BOWLS Hinterland League Results The final for the men’s division gave Pomona a magnificent win against Palmwoods at its home ground while the Ladies team played at home with a brilliant win against Mapleton’s Team One. Men’s League The four bowl pairs of Don Mallett and Bill Alford maintained their winning streak with a very close game 19-14. A new selection for three bowl pairs of Pat Gray-Spence and Greg Hodder proved a good move and they bowled brilliantly for a win of 26-17. The triples of Glenn Johnson, Walter Horn and Mel Hobbins amassed a great score of 30-14. Throwaway Fours team was changed around with Bob Andrews returning as skip, Russell Murray, Rick Goulding and Rob Roebuck. A tight struggle evolved with Pomona finding it difficult to get ahead and down 20-17 on the18th end. Rob was replaced by Daryl Millar and the game was 21 all on the last end. On the last bowl skip Bob moved the jack to Daryl’s wayward bowl on the outer edge ensuring a win of 21-20. Wow! Pomona winning four rinks 97-66. Great job Pomona Men’s team. The Ladies team certainly didn’t let anyone down. With a win every week they were determined to win their last game and claim victory. The triples of Desley, Gaye and Jocelyn enjoyed a very comfortable win of 30-13. Pairs of Veronis and Fay were in

the lead however half way through let down their guard down and the Mapleton team took the lead when suddenly the game had another turn around and Veronis and Fay played brilliant bowls to win 30-13. WITH the loss of captain coach Ben Cahn and a number of other senior players, Noosa Lions may well have the youngest squad in the Sunshine Coast Premier Men’s Football competition but they’re not complaining. The calibre of a suite of under-18 players has impressed coaches Matt Holland and Phil Amson. The young guns include long-term Lions Andre

Jancevski and Jacob Brown and newcomers from the Sunshine Coast Fire Max Adey and Addison Brader. “These young guys are quality players who are really stepping up and putting pressure on their senior teammates to perform. It’s great to see.” Amson said. But the Noosa coaches are not the only ones to identify the talent pool with goal keeper Jacob Brown being called

up on the weekend to play for the QAS Under 18 squad. Acquitting himself well in a 6-2 victory Jacob has been recalled for the QAS match against South West Thunder. “Jacob Brown is an excellent keeper who has worked tirelessly and earned his opportunity,” Amson said. With an early exit from the FFA cup this year the squad is focussed on the start of the regular season this weekend.

Pair drive President's team THIS weekend saw the 13 to 19-year-old state school boys titles held in Redlands and Noosa were represented by Riley Murrihy and Lewis Schefe in the President’s team. They did not let the side down as their team went all the way through undefeated and also took out the grand final on Sunday 7-1 against Metropolitan West to be crowned State Champions. Both boys contributed with Riley hitting the first home run of the tournament and Lewis following with the second in the opening match Riley went on to bat at 666 and had a on base percentage of 800 while Lewis was about 500 for both, Lewis also hit a

second home run. As the school system encourages all players to take part they used Louis as DH in a few games while Riley played short stop and third base. It’s a great achievement for the boys and we look forward to next year when the Sunshine Coast team has its own entity in this competition. While all this was going on there were a few Noosa softball members who have played away from Noosa this year travelling to Brisbane each week to a bigger competition. This weekend was grand final day in which Luke Thomas won the A Grade grand final and saw

his home run hit in a cracking game against PCYC which Riley played in. Riley also played in the under-15 grand final and the B Grade men’s team grand final in which he won the 15s and was runner-up in the men’s. Lewis and Shinai were runners-up in the 17s last week. Sheena won the women’s B2 final with Focus which meant that Noosa players collected three grand final wins, three runners up and a schoolboys’ state championship. To top the weekend off, Riley was named best under-15 player in the association a great effort to top off his year so far.

ANOTHER busy weekend for our surf lifesaving fraternity, with patrols as usual on our three beaches Peregian, Sunshine and Noosa, state competition for Nippers at North Burleigh and fund-raising for kindred sporting clubs on Main Beach Noosa. Once again, all patrol captains have reported an incident-free weekend. While our Red and Yellow army was keeping our tourists safe on our beaches, our Nippers travelled to North Burleigh to contest the last carnival of the season, the Queens-

land Youth Surf Life Saving Championships. This year a total of 1750 junior lifesavers representing clubs from Port Douglas through to the bottom of the Gold Coast competed, with 650 coming from the Sunshine Coast. The overall total is 110 up on last year, so this i good to see as it gives an indication as to the progress of the Nipper movement in Queensland. Happy to report it was indeed a very successful carnival for both Noosa and Sunshine Beach. Contesting age groups from Under 12 to Under 15, Noosa came home with a tally of 4 gold, 6 silver and 2 bronze medals. For Sunshine it was also a successful carnival with their team finishing in fifth place overall in the

state. Their tally of 6 gold, 10 silver and 7 bronze speaks volumes for their coaching panel. Perhaps the performance of the day came when, for the fifth year in a row, their boys board relay team, which starting together as Unde 11s, won the Under 15 gold medal. With Sunshine being a small club, this is indeed an,outstanding result and we congratulate everyone involved. Regarding the results of our clubs, the medal tallies take second place when you consider the conditions that our youth had to battle. Saturday was big and blue bottles were ever present. However, with a wind change on the Sunday the blues were absent but the conditions were still big. These conditions made it tough for all competitors, however their performance is a great indicator

as to the fighting spirit of our young; and it speaks volumes for the future of lifesaving in Queensland. Add to this the report that on two previous occasions, the high standard of good sportsmanship shown by two Noosa Youth teams was highly commended by officials. So the fighting spirit our two clubs at North Burleigh plus the good sportsmanship shown by all our youth, tells us that the administrators and coaches of our two clubs must be doing a lot of things right. On Sunday from 2pm to 6pm the Noosa Surf Club sponsored the 4 Codes of Footy, a major fundraising beach party. Held in the tents on Main Beach, courtesy of the Surf Festival, the purpose of this was to assist the Rugby Union, AFL, Soccer and Rugby League clubs in their fund-raising campaign.

With nibbles, beverages and entertainment, provided by the Tamworth award-winning Dennis Sisters, it was indeed a very successful occasion. Anton Mogg, manager of the Surf Club and emcee for the occasion said in his welcome, “This is the first time that we have attempted such a function; so on behalf of our club thank you for your support. We are hoping to make this type of fund-raiser an annual event. It is our way of showing our thanks to the community for your support during our hard years of chook raffle fund-raisers. So once, again our thanks for your support. ” All clubs were represented by officials and to start the afternoon an official from each club was asked to address the guests and give a preview of what lies ahead for their season. Gold medals for Sunshine By DEAN SMALLMAN SUNSHINE NIPPERS THE swell gods welcomed Nippers from across the state for the second annual State Youth Surf Lifesaving Championships at North Burleigh last weekend. With cyclone Winston almost a forgotten memory for the coast's beaches, it was expected the Cold Coast would present ideal conditions for the Under 11 to Under 15 Nippers from clubs as north as Port Douglas and as south as Tweed Head/Coolangatta. With uninvited blue bottles halting proceeding on Friday, and conditions causing Sunday's events for the Under 11s and Under 12s to be

shifted south to North Kirra, the planning and logistics of all clubs were thrown out the window. Sunshine however prevailed with some incredible results. The Under 15 boys led the way with gold medals in the Cameron, Swim Teams and an incredible fifth year in a row they won Gold for the Board Team event, that’s Under 11 through to Under 15. Gold medals were also won by the mighty Matt Lewis in the Under 11 Iron event and the feisty Ruby Nolan in the Under 14 Swim. For our first game of the season the skies were looking a bit grey as we all headed south for our respective games. Under 8 Gold had a great game to start the season with a 3-1 victory over the Chancellor Crocs. Goals were scored by Harrison Howard, Montan-

nah Ward and Joel Fitzgerald scoring the goal of the day and the player of the match trophy. For the Under 9 Black team it was black on black drawing one all against Caloundra Black, the game was tight all the way through and could have gone either way, so a draw was the perfect way to finish. Walsh’s racing round MISS Moneypenny’s owner turned race car driver Ben Walsh has secured a solid start to his championship campaign finishing fourth overall in the first round of the Aussie Racing Car Championship. Aussie Racing Cars is Australia’s largest motor racing category with 42 supercars entered on the weekend. In blistering heat,

Mr Walsh ran in the top four all weekend in one of the strongest fields seen in many years. Mr Walsh was held back after starting in 34th position and being involved in a slower cars accident which saw him go all the way to the rear of the field but still managed to finish the lap in record time.

Trifecta for Sunshine Beach THE Sunshine Beach Surf Club has proven to be mighty as the team prepare for an induction into the Hall of Fame. The small club claimed the trifecta earlier this month when it was awarded Best Surf Life Saving Supporters Club Award for the third year in a row at the annual Keno and Clubs Queensland Awards for Excellence. Club president Warwick Redwood said the win was due to a great management team and listening to the community. “I think it comes down to listening to the community and ticking all the boxes that they wanted,” Mr Redwood said. “We’ve had a great management team and have headed in a good direction for the past six years.” “We’re looking forward to being inducted into the Hall of Fame next year and will take the team with us to the awards.” noosa.starcommunity.com.au

WITH the warmer weather still with us and water temperatures a balmy 25 degrees, the river is still producing some great fish, at the Dog Beach the whiting are still in good numbers, in fact a lot of the lower reaches of the river are producing some great whiting. With the fish being well and truly legal size. There are a few elbow slappers around that have been belting poppers and stick-baits off the surface, the River2sea Skinny Dogs have been working a treat with a nice walk-the-dog action. Some quality size bream have been caught at Woods Bay and around the Hilton Terrace stretch of the river. Ecogear CX 35 Hardbodies and Squidgy Wrigglers have been working well. Prawns, small strip bait of mullet and bonito fillets have also done the trick. There have been plenty of flathead caught throughout the river and at the river mouth. Bouncing soft plastics and blades along the bottom has been very successful along with trolling hard body lures like the Zerek Tango Shads. A few larger specimens have been taken on live herring. Trevally have also been in good numbers, surface popper in the low light periods should see a result. We’ve seen some nice jacks over the last week taken on live baits, soft vibes and plastics. Structure is still the key so areas like the river mouth, Tewantin Harbour and Noosa Sound have been the prime areas to target. We have also seen some good fish coming from up-

There have been some quality prawns in the river, the prawns are drawn to light on the water so concentrate your efforts around jetties and piers with a light attached. Not only are prawns good to eat, but live prawns make outstanding baits. Up on North Reef it has been all about the mackerel, good schools of quality spanish and spotted mackerel have been giving anglers a great time with some anglers doing battle with good sized fish. With the weather turning a little average in the later part of last week, a lot of anglers stayed close to home so Sunshine Reef, Halls Reef and Jew Sholes were the best bet. Good mixed bags of fish were reported including sweetlip, snap-

per, tuskies and quality coral trout. On the beaches, the dart are still in good number with the larger fish a little further out, good whiting are in the closer gutters, as well as the dart. Night fishing has seen some good jew down around Coolum. Tailor are also in the mix with Maroochy and Noosa River mouths a good spot to try on the high tide.
