Safe drive blitz By LACHLAN MOORHEAD PAKENHAM police are warning drivers to ensure their cars are roadworthy ahead of a new operation launching next week. Operation Compliance is set to roll out on 14 March and will see Cardinia Highway Patrol target “un-roadworthy and unsafe” vehicles. Cardinia Highway Patrol Sergeant Allen Inderwisch said he wanted to

warn the community about the police blitz before it began, to allow drivers the chance to get their cars in order. “We want to give people the opportunity to fix their cars before we pull them up,” he told Star News. As part of Operation Compliance, police will be setting up additional roadblocks and increasing patrols at shopping centre car parks and railway station car parks. Detectives will be closely monitor-

ing the condition of tyres, windscreen wipers, headlights and tail-lights. “Coming into winter and the bad weather we want to make sure every car is safe,” Sgt Inderwisch said. “They’re better off doing it now rather than us pulling them up, giving them a defect notice and possibly a fine.” In August, the Cardinia Highway Patrol received extra funding from the TAC and launched Operation Bunbury,

FEELING the heat? This may be why. Pakenham has just capped off an unusually warm summer, according to a local meteorologist. Dean Sgarbossa, who specialises in thunderstorms, said that this summer’s average maximum temperature was 28.4 degrees Celsius - more than three degrees higher than the usual average of 25 degrees Celsius. “December started off significantly warm compared to January or February, which is unusual given that usually

it heats up throughout the summer,” he said. Temperatures were consistently high throughout the three months, with Pakenham recording a total of 34 days when the mercury hit at least 30 degrees Celsius. “To put that into perspective, a third of all summer days were over thirty,” Dean said. The mercury peaked at a very warm 43.9 degrees Celsius on 13 January, before fluctuating around the mid-twenties for most of February. However we did record slightly

above-average rainfall, thanks to one particularly wet day. On 29 January, Pakenham recorded 42 millimetres of rain, which is almost the equivalent to the average January rainfall. Looking to autumn, Dean says we can again expect a warmer-than-usual season. “Effectively we’re looking at the chance of exceeding average temperatures, so it will stay quite warm,” he said. “Minimum temperatures are also likely to be warmer than average in the autumn.”

By LACHLAN MOORHEAD THE acting principal of Kambrya College has defended one of her staff members after a media report stated that they had deflated the bike tyre of a student who was riding without a helmet. In a statement, the Berwick’s school’s acting principal Joanne Wastle said she felt the situation was handled appropriately and backed the assistant principal’s actions. “I feel the steps taken were reasonable to ensure that the student had the opportunity to get home safely in the absence of him having a bicycle helmet,” Ms Wastle said. On Tuesday, the Daily Mail website reported that an assistant principal at Kambrya College let the air out of 15-yearold Maverick’s rear bike tyre with a pen because he wasn’t wearing a helmet and was about to ride home. In a letter to the Australian Cycle Alliance, Maverick’s mum, Kerry, slammed the assistant principal for an “abuse of power”. “I find it incredible that the assistant principal took it upon himself to vandalise my son’s bike," Kerry wrote. “I feel it is also an act of bullying to a 15-yearold boy as this was carried out in front of a number of other students. “This appears to be a blatant misuse of position and abuse of power.” Ms Wastle said Kambrya had spoken with the student’s father at the time and “he agreed with our actions”. “A reminder regarding the expectation that all students wear bicycle helmets was included in the principal’s message to all parents in the college newsletter, which was distributed to all parents on Friday 4 March 2016,” Ms Wastle said.

Ecstatic over AFL debut By JARROD POTTER MOST AFL footballers are just slogging it out on the training track in March. Cranbourne Football Club rising star Hayley Wildes however was in the midst of her AFL debut after she earned a call up to the Western Bulldogs. With number 21 on her back, Wildes, 19, from Lang Lang, was awe-struck by every part of her AFL experience on Sunday. From getting her jersey off the men’s skipper Bob Murphy to hearing the roar of the crowd as she ran out onto the field - Wildes soaked up every second of the day. “The Bulldogs captain Bob Murphy came in before the game and presented me with my jumper and that was just surreal to be given an AFL jumper by an AFL captain,” Wildes said. “Especially one that’s so respected and one of the best in the game at the moment - was just amazing to run out with a fair few people staying around. “The crowd made a fair bit of noise and it was great.” The Western Bulldogs-Melbourne NAB Challenge match was only a curtain-raiser for Wildes’ clash as the AFL Women’s Exhibition Series took centre stage at Highgate Reserve, Craigieburn. After impressing on the track at the AFL Women’s Academy, Wildes, alongside Cranbourne team-mates Danielle Hardiman (Demons) and Bianca Jakobsson (Bulldogs), was brought into the AFL ranks, and Wildes immediately felt at home in red, white and blue. “Was a couple of weeks ago through an email and we got a few more from the Bulldogs and everyone went down on Saturday for an induction and the club was just amazing - really welcoming and made us feel like we were part of the club.” Wildes and her Doggies kin were too strong for the Demons in the first exhibition match, snaring a 6.5 (41) to 3.3 (21). Wildes brought her usual run-and-carry from the south east to the big time as she streamed down a wing, had a bounce and hit up Dogs’ forward Moana Hope lace-out in a thrilling passage. But her favourite moment was reserved for singing the song - rightly amended from the old

Wildes makes her return to the Cranbourne colours soon enough as her Eagles make the step up to the newly formed VFL Women’s competition on Sunday 3 April against Darebin. She thinks the AFL experience and all the preseason training with the Academy will pay off for Cranbourne and the Eagles might surprise a few heading into the inaugural season. “It was really good - because obviously we were in Division 1 last year and not play-

ing against the best - so with three of us - Dani (Hardiman) and Beej (Jakobsson) - in the teams as well,” Wildes said. “Especially with Beej playing really well, even gives Cranbourne a lot of hope going forward against the best of the best. “It’s about three weeks before the start of the season - and we’ve got Darebin at Darebin round one - so that’ll be a challenge for us and everyone is really looking forward to it.”

POLICE have arrested three alleged ringleaders of the Skids hoon gangs. On Monday 7 March a 23-year-old Mornington man was arrested at a Melinga Crescent home, a 21-year-old Greensborough man was arrested at a Cosham Court home, and a 21-year-old Mount Martha man was arrested at a Balcombe Drive property. It comes after five youths from Hampton Park, Cranbourne North and Cranbourne South were charged on Friday, with police claiming they had “shut down” the rival south-east and north-west Skids gangs. A total of nine people were charged on Friday 4 March after Taskforce Regarder seized a black 2003 Holden ute from a Dulnain Court home in Hampton Park and an orange VT Holden Commodore from a Greta Court house in Ferntree Gully in the early hours of the morning. Among those charged on Friday were two men from Hampton Park aged 28 and 23, two men from Cranbourne North aged 22 and 23, a 20-year-old Cranbourne South man, an 18-year-old Somerville man, a 28-year-old Langwarrin South man, a 19-year-old Gladstone Park man, and a 20-year-old Ferntree Gully man. In all, police have charged 35 people and seized 21 vehicles since Taskforce Regarder started a month ago. Acting Inspector Michael Daly told reporters outside Dandenong police station on Friday that police had “effectively shut down the south-east Skids and north-west Skids hierarchies”. “We’ve charged numerous people and, basically, put a stop to it,” he said. Insp Daly said the rival hoons had been meeting in the Melbourne’s northern or southern

suburbs and holding “a contest against each other”. Two teenagers were killed in January when their ute crashed off the E.J. Whitten Bridge in Keilor East, and police believe they had earlier been at a drag race, allegedly organised by the northern Skids. The charges issued on Friday include conduct endangering serious injury, conduct endangering life and other hoon offences. Book of books ANTHONY Byrne, MP (News, 3 March) has warned against using 'inflammatory and derogatory’ language in debate about the Safe Schools Program. But Tony Abbott is right in calling for the program to be axed. The Australian Christian Lobby is also right in attacking the program. Why? Simply because the Bible, which is God’s guide for life for mankind, condemns homosexuality. The first school in Australia was established soon after settlement, where the main textbook was the Bible. This was a major reason for the tremendous growth and prosperity of our nation. Window dressing LACHLAN Moorhead reports (News, 3 March), that Narre Warren North MP, Luke Donnellan, and his chief of staff, went on a very expensive overseas trip to “learn" about integrated transport planning in Europe. Luke Donnellan should refund all of this money to taxpayers, plus another $2 million. It is clear to me that Luke Donnellan is wasting taxpayers’ money. He has learnt absolutely nothing from this junket in September 2015. I met Mr Donnellan in his office in January. VicRoads wants to build a traffic noise wall at the back of residential homes right near the planned widening of the Monash Freeway. This noise wall project will cost taxpayers $2 million. The plan is for a 5.4-metre high timber fence to be built, although the existing five-metre timber wall has had absolutely no impact on traffic noise. VicRoads and Luke Donnellan’s office made a decision based on prior, undated, and unseen, noise reports from contractors. In other words, despite the fact that there is no evidence the existing timber fence impacts traffic noise, and that VicRoads has failed to release any prior or current data on traffic noise levels to local residents, the Minister’s office informs me this project will proceed. If this means that Luke Donnellan is not influenced by evidence, or science, how could his European trip be of any value? Now VicRoads’ contractors will be the only winners from a $2 million fencing project which will have little more than a cosmetic value for local residents. John Glazebrook, Endeavour Hills.

Kasey’s final journey By LACHLAN MOORHEAD A NARRE Warren cop has brought closure to a distraught family, returning their cherished pet dog to them after it lost its life while being missing for two months. Sergeant Perry Robinson found the deceased dog, named Kasey, near the train tracks at Narre Warren station about 7.30pm on Saturday 20 February, following reports a woman was in a “distressed state” and being comforted by PSOs. Since she went missing, Kasey’s owner had gone to significant lengths to track her down, putting up flyers and posting messages to Facebook. In a post on Facebook after Kasey had been returned to her, the owner said Sgt Robinson and the PSOs had shown the utmost “compassion and care”. “They went and found Kasey’s remains which has allowed our family to have closure by bringing our beautiful pet home,” the owner said.

“We are so grateful to all the officers. It has been a very difficult couple of months, and the support and care they showed to us, is a credit to them and Victoria Police. “We really can’t thank them enough for their assistance and patience.” Sgt Robinson was the first to find Kasey and return her to the owner. “I spoke with the PSOs who informed me she had been looking for her dog which has been missing for approximately eight weeks,” Sgt Robsinson said. “I spoke to the female who was very upset and I felt her sadness of being in the position of not knowing what had possibly happened to her pet. “This would raise many questions which I envisage would continually run through your mind and significantly affect your daily life. “I have been a pet owner all my life and understand how pets become a part of the family.”

Sgt Robinson said policing often includes “unpleasant duties”, and this was “another one of these occasions”. “I believed they would be going through a whole lot of emotions after hearing this news, and I needed to be as compassionate and sympathetic as I could be,” Sgt Robinson said. “What conflicting emotions to be faced with, on the one hand you have an answer as to where your loved pet is, yet at the same time the devastating news that they are no longer alive. “I understood full well that Kasey was obviously an integral part of their life and to lose a pet significantly impacts you. “Hopefully, by returning Kasey to them we were able to bring some closure for them and their family and re-unite them again.” Sgt Robinson applauded the “compassion and empathy” of the PSOs involved.

School’s bike helmet dilemma turns fiasco By LACHLAN MOORHEAD THE Acting Principal of Kambrya College has defended one of her staff members after a media report stated that they had deflated a student’s bike tyre who was riding without a helmet. In a statement, the Berwick’s school’s Acting Principal Joanne Wastle said she felt the situation was handled appropriately and backed the assistant principal’s actions.

“I feel the steps taken were reasonable to ensure that the student had the opportunity to get home safely in the absence of him having a bicycle helmet,” Ms Wastle said. On Tuesday, the Daily Mail website reported that an assistant principal at Kambrya College let the air out of 15-year-old Maverick’s rear bike tyre with a pen because he wasn’t wearing a helmet and was about to ride home.

In a letter to the Australian Cycle Alliance, Maverick’s mum, Kerry, slammed the assistant principal for an “abuse of power”. “I find it incredible that the assistant principal took it upon himself to vandalise my son’s bike,“ Kerry wrote. “I feel it is also an act of bullying to a 15-year-old boy as this was carried out in front of a number of other students. “This appears to be a blatant misuse

of position and abuse of power.” Ms Wastle said Kambrya had spoken with the student’s father at the time and “he agreed with our actions”. “A reminder regarding the expectation that all students wear bicycle helmets was included in the principal’s message to all parents in the college newsletter, which was distributed to all parents on Friday 4 March 2016,” Ms Wastle said.

Keys to their business premises, house and car were found by a resident in a suburban rubbish bin. “Endeavour Hills police were involved in getting the keys back to us, our keys were dumped with wrapping and gift card packaging,” she said. The couple said a neighbour in their street had taken a photo of youths, some Caucasian and some dark skinned in about four cars, on the morning after the break in, about 7am. “He said he thought it looked like a drug deal and took the photo to get the number plates - we have heard the offenders are a part of a larger gang from Dandenong,” they said. “Until it happens to you nobody listens.” The pair said they weren’t aware of the extent of the home invasions throughout Casey until they called police that morning. “We were one of around eight places broken into in 24 hours, the police were amazing throughout, when I called police they said ‘we’ve had a busy morning’, they had been going from home to home.”

And it’s the bold and brazen break-in, which occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning, around 5.30am to 6am, which bothers the Berwick parents the most. “When we realised what had happened that morning, I burst into tears and went into shock, which quickly wore off into anger,” she said. “It’s horrific that someone thought it was in their right to walk into our home, take what they wanted and walk out again, and we’ve worked so hard for what we have, it’s heart-breaking.” The thieves left the laundry door wide open and drank leftover bottles of wine and dumped them in the adjacent park land. “Police think they let themselves out the back door - bows from the presents were on the ground in the carport and I think they left taking swigs out of the bottles,” she said. Distraught at the fact strangers rummaged through her family’s belongings, the angry mother of two said she’d never been burgled in her 17 years in the same Berwick home, but will now make some security changes. “We are completely diligent now, keys aren’t on show, we are getting security cameras and

THEIR home was one of the last to be broken into and burgled within the same 24 hours, in a spate of home invasions that rocked Casey. But for this Berwick family it was the home where thieves cleaned up. Entering through a broken doggy door, this gang of youths, allegedly including members as young as 12 years old, took presents, cards filled with money and vouchers, mobile phones, wallets, keys, a sound system, a computer, alcohol and most importantly a Nikon digital camera. But they didn’t steal the family's cars. The Berwick family of four, who wishes to remain anonymous, had celebrated an event 12 years in the making on Saturday 20 February. “My husband and I renewed our vows during the day at our home, we had family and friends attend, some from overseas and we had our original celebrant,” she said. But the special day will always be remembered for something very different. “My husband and some friends stayed up with a fire going until about 1.30am, my husband had locked all the doors and we had friends sleep over in the downstairs spare room.” “During the night my friends and I both heard some noises, but we both thought the other had woken up.” That morning she said was meant to be about watching the ceremony footage on their camera, opening presents, tidying up and reading the cards, but instead, it was “horrific”. The story is exactly as Casey police have been telling it for several months. Keys left in the inside door lock, handbag hung up in the kitchen and valuables sprawled across the table. But due to the day’s events, the valuables stolen totalled more than $5000, and the footage and photos captured on their Nikon digital camera were “irreplaceable” she said. Six people including a 10 and seven-year-old child were asleep upstairs during the invasion.

THE site of a proposed mosque in Narre Warren North has been targeted by arsonists. The vacant land at 365-367 Belgrave-Hallam Road, was set alight around 3.16am on Friday 4 March. The grassfire that extended about 25 metres was swiftly put out by the CFA. It is not yet known if the firebugs were racially motivated and the investigation is ongoing. However, Detective Senior Sergeant Rob Clark from Casey CIU said, “Signs erected notifying the proposed place of worship were taken down and thrown in the fire”. “It is of concern to us, and police will be patrolling the area as part of a prevention strategy,” he said. The fire comes as a Facebook page dedicated to stopping the mosque at the same location reached more than 8000 likes in less than two weeks. A planning application, which includes plans for a school and “place of worship” at 365-367 Belgrave-Hallam Road is currently being considered by Casey Council. The application was submitted by the Saarban Islamic Trust. Det Sen Sgt Clark declined to comment on the possibil-

But on Tuesday, Cr Rafal Kaplon said legislation indicated that council must “accept and consider all objections provided to them before they make a decision on a planning permit application”. “That means local councils will continue to receive and consider all objections until the planning application comes

before the council or its planning committee, even after the advertising period of a Notice for a Planning Application is finished,” he said. Casey planning manager Duncan Turner previously told Star News the matter would be considered at a future meeting of the council before “mid2016”. “Council considers all planning applications upon their own planning merits and as such it is not appropriate to make comment on the Facebook page,” he said. The Saarban Islamic Trust was contacted for comment. Police are appealing for anyone with information regarding the grass fire to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

THERE’S something to be said about being in the right place at the right time. Narre Warren 12-year-old Tim Haskayne was in the car with his mum, Pauline, parked outside a gymnastics centre where his sister, Emily, was having a lesson. Tim looked through the window and saw a dance studio across the street. The die was cast. “My sister used to do gymnastics and me and Mum used to sit in the car and wait for her to finish gymnastics, and across the road was a dance studio,” Tim told Star News. “Mum said, why don’t you do a dance class? “And I loved it.” That dance school was Patrick Studios in Port Melbourne, where Tim has attended for the last four years and is now a full-time student. This means Tim’s daily dancing, singing and acting lessons are consolidated with four hours a day of academic study, organised through a distance education provider. It’s a unique arrangement but one that Tim has embraced wholeheartedly, and one that is undoubtedly paying off. In a few months Tim will star as Kurt von Trapp in the latest production of the Sound of Music, which is set to open at Melbourne’s Regent Theatre on 13 May. It’s the second musical Tim will star in, having played Luke in Strictly Ballroom last year. The Sound of Music will be a quick turnaround for Tim, who only auditioned for the role three weeks ago. “I only found out a week ago I was in it,” he said. “We start rehearsals in April and the show starts in May.”

The eight-year-old super-supporter was over the moon when Hawthorn premiership star Cyril Rioli walked into his class last Tuesday at St Agatha’s Primary School, in Cranbourne. Rioli was there on a special mission to thank Sean for being such a passionate supporter of the Hawks and present him with his junior membership. The club heard about his love for Hawthorn after a Facebook post showed Sean overjoyed with ‘happy tears ‘after getting a signed birthday card from Rioli in the mail. Hawthorn went one better than a birthday card this week though, as Sean and his classmates literally couldn’t believe it when Rioli walked in. “When he walked in he said ‘can we please have Sean’ and everyone was like ‘SEAN’ and ‘what’s going on?” Sean said. “I felt all nervous - I thought it (Rioli) was plastic, but then I heard him talk and saw the thing on his foot, so I knew he actually had something going on as I knew he got a big corky in the game against Richmond. “I was looking at his knee and I knew

he was real.” Sean has been a Hawthorn supporter ever since his older sister Lily got him interested in the club and his favourite player has always been Rioli - making the visit even more special. “My sister got me into Hawthorn and when I started with Hawthorn I saw him on the field and thought ‘he’s pretty good, I like him’ and he’s been my favourite player ever since then,” Sean said. “I like it when they kick the ball to him or handpass it and he can always get it away from the other team. “And the way he snaps it too.” Sean’s mum Renee had to keep the secret visit under wraps for a week, but was just as excited when Cyril came through the doors of the school and wanted to thank Hawthorn for the special moment. “It’s been such a highlight for our family,” Renee said. “The way the Hawthorn Football Club was with us - I knew for a week and couldn’t tell the kids or anyone - but they were so family-oriented, and it was such an emotional day. “Sean’s teacher had to walk out because she was crying too and the way they did it and how Cyril was to Sean, we couldn’t have asked for it to be any better.” Sean is ready to start his own football journey as the Auskick star will make the step up to Cranbourne’s under-9s team in the South East Juniors competition.

That was the message among many other uplifting and motivational anecdotes, speaker, Holly Ransom, entertained audiences with at the first Casey Cardinia Business Breakfast of 2016. An esteemed social entrepreneur, lawyer, worldâ€™s youngest Rotary President, as well as the youngest person to be named in Australiaâ€™s â€˜100 Most Influential Womenâ€™, Holly from West Australia has made her mark worldwide. At just 21 years old she was approached by Rio Tinto Iron Ore boss Sam Walsh to help transform his business. Now in her mid-twenties, Holly has travelled the world and sat down for what she calls â€˜coffee chatsâ€™ with strangers she now calls mentors, and business minds she rubs shoulders with on a global scale. The CEO at Emergent Solutions, Holly was a youth representative at last yearâ€™s G20, where she learnt a lot about seating arrangements. â€œYou donâ€™t sit Russian President Vladimir Putin next to Barack Obama,â€? she told the crowd of Casey-Cardinia business owners. With a big laugh, Holly turned the audience's attention to how they could better implement changes to drive youth employment and engagement in their business as well as the not-for-profit sector. Holly wants to see more intergenerational leadership occur through both generations working together and with zero government relations experience, Holly told of her fear at the G20 summit. â€œI just wanted to put my head between my knees, I was having a panic attack at the worst time possible,â€? she said. Holly used her age and experience to speak for youth all over the world.

And it's trust in the economy, she says, that

will break the worsening trend. She said businesses needed to make powerful, early impacts on young people to keep them interested. â€œThis generation is highly technologically engaged and one per cent trust advertising,â€? Holly said.

Instead they trust peer to peer referencing sites and online blogs. â€œThis generationâ€™s minds are already 57 per cent made up before they even drop an email or ask a question.â€? So Holly put it to them and asked the CaseyCardinia businesses present to take a look at their own online footprint and how it could be improved to a wider, younger audience. Holly cemented her words with one undeniable image. It was of the election of the Pope in 2005 compared to that of 2013. The 2005 image shows a crowd of people watching the event: the 2015 image is a sea of smartphones. Allegations have found the much talked about image to be false - however misleading or not, the image paints a picture of the smartphone pocket phenomenon. And itâ€™s tapping into those forums which Holly encouraged local businesses to do if they want to engage with young people at their own game.

Mental health work proposal By CASEY NEILL A $2 MILLION online lifeline will help unemployed youth in the south-east to get into work. Employment Minister Michaelia Cash announced the Empowering YOUth initiative grant at headspace in Dandenong on Friday 4 March. The cash will enable headspace to take its world first Work and Study service around the country through its online portal eheadspace. Through web chat, web conferencing, phone and email, youths trying to find work or study options can receive realtime advice, information and support. â€œThe majority of young people that present to eheadspace experience issues such as depression, anxiety and study stress,â€? headspace

CEO Chris Tanti said. â€œThere is a strong connection between mental health issues, unemployment or risk of unemployment.â€? Headspace chief operating officer Kathleen Alonso said youth who came into a centre could be referred to the eheadspace service, and vice versa. She said it would help to get unemployed youths in the south-east back into employment. â€œWhat we will be doing is building strong relationships with industry to facilitate placements of young people in genuine jobs,â€? she said. â€œThrough the eheadspace platform weâ€™ve been piloting an approach and now weâ€™re able to take it full-scale and we are seeing great results from that.â€? Ms Cash said headspace was among the first 20 organisations

to receive Empowering YOUth grants to help vulnerable young people into sustainable employment - â€œproven organisations on the ground who already have a track record of getting young people ready for jobsâ€?. â€œIt is unacceptable that there still remains a 12.7 per cent youth unemployment rate across Australia,â€? she said. She said the key was â€œworking with organisations to think outside the box and ensure that we are properly targeting youth who are at risk of being longterm unemployedâ€?. Liberal Bruce candidate Helen Kroger said the initiative was â€œgoing to create more jobs for young people in Dandenongâ€?. â€œItâ€™s the rubber on the road that makes the difference and this is the rubber on the road,â€? she said.

Providing wheel help By GEORGIA WESTGARTH ONE hundred and twenty hours and a driving test, is what separates a learner driver from a probationary licence holder and for many it’s a volunteer mentor that gets them there. The City of Casey has assisted hundreds of teenagers in gaining those compulsory hours through the L2P Learner Driver Program, and now they need more helpers. “The most rewarding part of the program is when you receive the call from the learner to say that they have finally received their licence, it certainly puts a smile on your face,” driver mentor Thomas Neary said. Funded by VicRoads, the council program allows disadvantaged learner drivers who don’t have access to a car or a fully licensed driver the chance at gaining an essential life skill. Since its introduction to Casey in

2010, 70 mentors have volunteered, but the program needs more hands on the wheel. Casey mayor Sam Aziz said the program eventually gave teenagers their own freedom. “We all know that feeling when we finally get our driver’s licence, it’s an exciting time in a young person’s life. But for some people, it’s really hard to find the supervision needed,” Cr Aziz said. “Being without a licence makes young people reliant on friends, family and public transport to get around. “It limits their freedom and independence, and is a major factor in their ability to pursue work and further study.” Which is exactly what the L2P program gave former Narre Warren South P-12 student, Sitarah Mohammed, who relies on her car daily to get her to and from university. But Lifesaving Victoria’s trainee recruits TenzinCheosang,Tsering-Kyi and Elaha Naziri ought to know about swimming against currents and tides. The trio are trailblazers: Ms Cheosang and Ms Kyi, both of Noble Park, are believed to be the first Tibetan-born lifesaver trainees in Victoria, and Ms Naziri, of Lyndhurst, the state’s first female lifeguard from Afghanistan. None of the three grew up near water; over the past year the teenagers have learnt to swim strongly enough to make the lifesaver grade.They then took a week’s intensive training in first aid, signalling and other skills at Edithvale Surf Lifesaving Club. They are among seven graduates of the multicultural trainee program this year - and among 30 in the past five years - to have followed the footsteps of Dandenong’s pioneering Afghan-born lifesaver Imtiyaz ’’Minty’’ Saberi. Lifesaving Victoria multicultural projects officer David Holland says the role-models “kicked down the door” and will help spread the water-safety message to new arrivals. “New arrivals are the ones most at risk. They’re most represented in drownings in this state. “Water safety is often a low or zero priority in their countries, and it’s hard to bridge that gap in Australia.” Many of the trainees have come from the Noble Park English Language School and its Casey campus.

“It was quite a challenge for them.” The trainees now become powerful role-models, Mr Holland said. “Other kids and families see them at the beach and water safety becomes a conversation. “They learn about the worth of water safety and the worth of learning to swim. “We hope many more will follow.”

“I’ve been involved in this club for nearly 50 years and that’s one of the two greatest wins I’ve ever seen, congratulations for that,“ Pakenham club president Phil Anning said before immediately putting things in to perspective for his Premier troops in the rooms straight after their semifinal win over Merinda Park. “The other win that stands out - we chased down 350-odd after being 5/100 and got through. But we’d played our grand final, boys, and got smashed the next week. Just keep that in mind, celebrate a famous victory for this club but please turn your focus quickly to next week.“ When most grand final sides say they’re heading into the deciding game without any pressure, they’re lying. It’s a stretch to say Kooweerup won’t have any pressure heading into this weekend, either, but it almost seems like they’ve made to this grand final on borrowed time. “After so many years of grand final pressure, it just doesn’t get to us now,” said Kooweerup skipper Chris Bright. “Pakenham is a damn good side - they’re clearly the benchmark, and they should feel comfortable in their own ability. “Not only do they have Chris Smith, but Dom (Paynter), Elston, Lehman, Jason Williams and Sean Gramc - they’re a very strong batting side. “But one of the reasons Jess Mathers came to Kooweerup is the chance to have grand final success and he’s jumping out of his skin. “This is the first time ever our whole club is playing finals cricket and there’s a huge buzz around the club.” Their former leader and multiple premiershipwinning gun Michael Giles isn’t there to experience it, and he’ll be in Bright’s thoughts this week. “I think about him every day and I feel for him not being here, but I’m not just going out there to win this for him - we’re doing this for the whole club,” he said. “We’re putting everything behind us and focussing on this week - one last game. “It’s good celebrating a flag with 11 team mates, but imagine doing it with 44! “This is a team sport, but it’s not just the team that takes to the field.” Like Kooweerup, Pakenham is a powerhouse club with multiple senior sides in action this week.

Chris Smith holds one of the keys to Pakenham’s chances of toppling Kooweerup this weekend in the WGCA’s showpiece event – the Premier grand final. “This is a mountain we haven’t climbed before,” said Paynter. “We’ve been pantsed by Kooweerup both times we’ve played them in semi-finals. “They’ve got Davey, O’Hara and the Brights they’ve all been there and done that - and I think their most dangerous player is still Davey.” Paynter said his side’s key this week will be applying relentless pressure to the side that’s been the benchmark in that area for years. They won’t lack for motivation. But Paynter, himself, is under an even bigger injury cloud than he was for the semi-final - injuring a hamstring against the Cobras, to go along with his existing thumb injury. He’ll play - he’ll almost certainly play - because he means so much to this group; his leadership almost more than his prodigious talent. “Kooweerup has won the last two premierships defending low scores, so we know we have to keep the pressure on,” Paynter said.

“With the way they bowl, they set their fields and pray on batsmen’s errors. “They’ve proven how hard they are to score against but this is a time to show some courage, and to back our ability.” Clyde will battle it out with Pakenham Upper/ Toomuc this weekend in the fight for promotion into the Premier tier. The Cougars made it into the District division decider off the back of a semi-final against Devon Meadows that had it all - ups, downs and a huge finish on Sunday as the Panthers (121 and 8/118 dec) threw it all at Clyde (175 and 6/43) ... but came up just short. In Sub-District division, Tooradin is on the hunt for a historic fifth title from the last seven starts when the Seagulls host Pakenham. WGCA newcomers Kalgidhar (154) had no answers for Tooradin’s 8/271, scored largely off the back of a brilliant century from Andrew Proctor (117).

Connell up to Rain causes havoc the challenge By JARROD POTTER TAKING on a sea-change challenge, Shaun Connell farewelled the South East Juniors as his gaze shifts towards the Peninsula football leagues. Capping off his tenure as SEJ general manager, after joining the league in 2009, Connell’s last day was Friday after he accepted the position of AFL South East’s Peninsula leagues manager as part of a restructure of the South East Juniors’ governance. “Today’s (Friday) the last day - so it feels a little surreal,” Connell said. “But I’m comforted in the fact that SEJ is in a really strong position to move forward under the new governance model in AFL South East and I’m pretty excited to see where it can go.” There’s been a lot going on at the league in those six years, in particular the transition from Dandenong District JFL to the South East Juniors, 50-year celebrations as well as the rapid expansion into West Gippsland and growth of the Youth Girls competition. Throughout it all, Connell thought the costcutting measures of the league were the most significant achievement of his SEJ tenure, as junior football remained within reach of all southeastern families. “The board’s ability to keep football affordable and not increase our fees, through a whole raft of initiatives, that was key to what we do,” Connell said. “Our ability to be able to accommodate the smallest of clubs to the largest has meant that clubs - like Cora Lynn, Nar Nar Goon, North Dandenong and Parkmore among others - have been able to not only survive, but in some instances grow themes and rebuild. “I think certainly the name change, logo change has been significant and the growth of the

Picture: SOUTH EAST JUNIORS competition has been really pleasing too.” His sights are now set on improving the MPNFL Nepean and Peninsula competitions as well as the Frankston District JFL and he hopes to continue the same initiatives that built the SEJ up to 26 clubs and nearly 5000 players. “Probably not too dissimilar to here - working closely with the clubs to create sustainable, affordable football,” Connell said. “Under the new commission structure there are some terrific opportunities to grow the sport in those areas.” He wanted to thank everyone who continued to push the league ahead; the footballers, the club volunteers and especially the SEJ and AFL South East staff. “There’s still a massive amount of growth that can come through junior footy - there are some terrific people in this league that have done a mountain of work to provide kids with the opportunity to play football,” Connell said. “We’re probably one of the most professional sporting organisations in the region and the clubs have been amazingly supported by a terrific staff and I think I’ll miss the people more than anything else I think.” The SEJ general manager position will cease to exist after Friday, as the role will be restructured within other roles in the AFL South East commission.

PAKENHAM LITTLE ATHLETICS JUST when we thought that the weather had settled down we had the annoying presence of drizzle on Saturday morning. This was after a few heavy storms on Friday afternoon. That meant that high jump and hurdles had to be cancelled due to safety reasons. To top that off the timing gates did not like the heavy mist, failing to register times for most of the sprinting events. We nearly had to return to the good old days of hand held timing. Put all this together and the day still was great with the athletes doing their best; however when it came to PBs it was always going to be a tough day at the office for our youngsters. The most senior athletes headed off track pretty early, while the U10 girls finished the program off with their 200m sprint not having any gates up to finish their race, which was a bit different for them. Despite some of these issues the atmosphere was good and it was pleasing to see everyone trying hard in a season that has had everything from storms, washouts, heat cancellations, drizzle and perfect conditions all greeting the athletes and parents each week. PAKENHAM GOLF MONDAY PERFECT scoring conditions for our Monday's Stableford event meant you had to shoot a low number just to have a chance to win a ball, let alone the competition. Peter Diss (20) shot a very nice round of 42 points which was matched by Hayden Bristow (29), with Peter taking the win on countback. Ron Winsall (31) was very close in third spot with 41 points. Balls went down to 39 points. WEDNESDAY Before Wednesday’s round a lot of players made mention of how high the scoring was on Monday, well that was to be bettered by the end of Wednesday, with players needing 41 points or better in all three grades to get amongst the winners. Noel Bonne (14) shot 42 points to win A Grade, with Andrew Went (10) costing himself victory over the last two holes to finish second on 41 points. Patty Duane (22) used the luck of the Irish to win B Grade with 41 points, with fellow countryman Tom McDermott (21) with 39 points. Paul Hearn (25) made a great return to golf after a few weeks off, winning C Grade with the best score of the day, 43 points good enough to narrowly hold off Graham Allen (32) who let the comp slip through his fingers on the last hole, shooting 42 points. Peter Mackie had a great front nine

of 24 points to win the Super Comp. New member Phillip Mott hit a nice shot on the 5th Hole to win the Super Comp NTP and pick up a club logo shirt. The ball comp went down to 38 points WEDNESDAY TWILIGHT Brian Webster (19) held off the rest of the field with an impressive 23 points to win our Twilight Competition. FRIDAY Winner: William Gourley (22) 5-up. SATURDAY Last Saturday was our March Monthly Medal, with light drizzle falling for the early players, Ricky, our course superintendent, had a grin from ear to ear. The early conditions cleared by mid-morning, leaving absolutely perfect scoring conditions for the field to play in, with the scores reflecting the condition of the course at present, which is a credit to Rick and his staff through a long dry summer that will not see much relief through the early part of autumn. Michael Portelli (25) must have taken inspiration from his partner, Nola Burke with her C Grade victory the week before, Michael shot a great round of 65 Nett to be crowned our March Monthly Medal winner. Glenn Peazold (23) was snapping at the heels of Michael, coming in second in C Grade with 66 Nett. A Grade was very closely fought, Matt Lloyd (10) and Tym Davey (3)

both shot 69 nett, with Matt taking the victory on countback. Phil Barling (14) made a rare appearance on a Saturday, keeping his golf game on the tracks to fire a 66 nett and win B Grade, Noel Bonne (14) was a close second with 67 nett. Balls went down to 72 nett. SUNDAY Winner: John Hutcheon (14) 46 points. LADIES Last Thursday was our ladies March Monthly Medal, with three ladies all returning a score of 73 nett, Leah Barker, Sue King and Jennifer Grogan, which meant the medal would be decided by countback. Leah Barker (28) was the winner of the three-way countback to take victory in the March Monthly Medal and Division 1 with Sue King (36) winning Division 2 and Jennifer Grogan coming in third. Shirley Roberts and Marg Andrews won the Division 1 and 2 Longest Drives, with Shirley proving she can not only hit the ball a long way, but can also get the job done on the greens, winning the putting with 29 putts. Balls went down to 33 points. New A4 worth the wait By PETER ANDERSON AUDI’S A4 has just entered its fourth generation but if you poke around you’ll see that it’s known as the B9 the ninth-generation of the four rings’ B-segment offering, stretching back to the early 1970s starting with the first Audi 80, sold here as the Fox. The old car, released way back in 2008 was still selling strongly right up to the death, owing much to its understated good looks and value proposition, helping Audi to a record year in 2015. But underneath it was getting on a bit and the cabin was lacking many of the toys of not only other Audis but - crucially - its competitors. The B9 is also spun off the VW Group’s MLB Evo platform which has already produced the acclaimed second generation Q7. The new range debuts with three petrol engines - a 1.4-litre and two 2.0-litres - and a sole 2.0-litre turbodiesel. The 1.4 is included in the Australian A4 range for the first time. There’s also a huge list of new goodies to part you and your cash. Pricing starts at $55,500 for the 110kW/250Nm 1.4 litre TFSI frontwheel drive. The first of the 2.0 litre petrols is front-wheel drive as well and produces 140kW and 320Nm and kicks off at $60,900. The 140kW/400Nm 2.0 TDI is Quattro-only for $66,900

and the second 2.0 petrol, the Quattro 185kW, is $69,990. The new entry level 1.4 is $1500 cheaper than the outgoing entry level 1.8. Audi says the equipment level is higher to offset the performance penalty. The old A4 range had a big gap to the 2.0 TFSI Quattro which is now filled by the 2.0 front-wheel drive model. The two Quattro models (Audi expects the petrol Quattro to be the big seller) are both slightly more than their predecessors, but have a lot more gear as standard, most obviously safetyrelated. There wasn’t any pricing available for the wagon Avant, which is expected here before the middle of the year. All A4s feature adaptive LED headlights, 8.3-inch MMI screen with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, sport front seats, partial leather trim, Audi Connect internet functionality (requires a data SIM card), three-zone climate control and (finally!) not one but two USB ports to go with Bluetooth. The 1.4 rolls on 18-inch alloys. The new 2.0 TFSI front-drive adds DAB+, hands-free boot opening and electric passenger seat. The TDI and TFSI Quattro Sports are identically-specced, with 19-inch alloy wheels, sports suspension, upgraded sound system, memory driver’s seat and folding/heated exterior mirrors.

The latest Audi A4 is a huge step forward. There are tons of options from which to choose, but as ever, Audi helpfully groups them together into packages. The $1900 Assistance Package adds Active Lane Assist, adaptive cruise control with stop and go and traffic jam assistant, distance indicator and pre-sense front (helps you to avoid having a crash and prepares the car for one if it’s inevitable), turn assist (tries to stop you turning in front of oncoming traffic), collision avoidance and high beam assist. The Technik Package adds Audi’s sensational virtual cockpit and headsup display. The Virtual Cockpit is

lifted from the TT and Q7, a 12.3-inch fully digital display run by a powerful NVIDIA graphics card. The S-Line Sports package is almost completely cosmetic with leather/ alcantara trim, S-Line 19-inch alloys, sport suspension (if it’s not already fitted), S-Line exterior and interior bits and bobs and a few other extras. The price differs across the range, starting at $5200 on the 1.4, $5000 for the 2.0 140kW and $3200 for the TDI and TFSI Sport. There’s also the Parking Assistance Package with plenty of auto-parking

tech ($950) and S-Line which adds lots of styling aggro and varies in price depending on the wheel size you choose. Individual options include matrix LED headlights for $1700, metallic paint for $1420, adaptive suspension ($1100 on quattro/$1700 on frontwheel drive in Sport or Comfort flavours), B&O 3D stereo ($1500), the list goes on. The two adaptive suspension options differ in both the aggressiveness of the dampers and in ride height. Comfort lops 10mm off the steel suspension’s ride height while being biased towards a comfortable ride experience while the sport version drops the car 23mm and is more aggressive on the damper settings. On the safety front, all cars have eight airbags, with the last two being side airbags for the rear passengers. All A4s also have exit warning, a nifty feature to warn you of cars and cyclists approaching from behind. Also standard across the range is city emergency braking, pre-sense (closes windows and tightens belts if a collision is anticipated), cross-traffic assist, blind spot monitoring, pre-sense rear (warns other cars approaching too fast) and rear-view camera.
