Burpees for Butterflies By MEGAN OGLE BURPEES are usually an exercise best avoided due to the physical exertion required to execute just one, but members at Flitefit Peregian Beach love a challenge and are attempting to complete over 10,000 burpees in just one month. Flitefit owners Nicki White and David Fletcher have challenged members of their gym to push their limits for a good cause this month in a bid to raise funds for local charity Sunshine Butterflies. “If our members reach 10,000 burpees collectively we will donate $200 to Sunshine Butterflies,” David said. “And when individual members reach 500 we will donate

a further $10.” Over 55 members have signed up for the challenge, donating upwards of $5 to join in, with the oldest member being 78 years old and smashing out 150 burpees in one go. Another member is already up to 940 burpees bringing the collective number of burpees to 7538 in just seven days, promising to smash the 10,000 goal in no time. Gym member Narin Harrison said the challenge, while raising much-needed funds for a great cause, has also created a fun atmosphere amongst the members. “There’s a great sense of comradery, there’s a lot of fun teasing and friendly competition,” Narin said.

Lashing out at biosphere By MEGAN OGLE COUNCIL candidate and Noosa Parks Association (NPA) honorary secretary Ingrid Jackson has slammed the Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation (NBRF) for a lack of transparency. “The Foundation’s governance seems muddled, and there is no transparency. It gives every appearance of being a closed shop,” Ms Jackson said. “One of the first acts of the new Noosa Council should be to review the operations and financing of the Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation.”

Ms Jackson’s comments come as the NPA and NBRF currently discuss a joint project which would see the two environmental groups purchase privately owned land to be subdivided and resold with part of the land being held for a “conservation connectivity corridor”. The project, titled Biodiversity Connectivity, was submitted by NPA vice-president Michael Gloster to the NBRF last year who has since confirmed discussions between NPA and NBRF commenced “a fortnight ago” but declined to provide further details of the project. The Expression of Interest sub-

mitted to the NBRF states that part of the subdivided land would be turned into a wildlife corridor while the other part or parts would be resold with possible voluntary covenanted agreements including land management plans. Ms Jackson said more than a year after its establishment, the Foundation was “struggling” to meet the high expectations held for it and said it appeared to be “failing” at its “primary task” of raising funds. “At present most of its funds come from Noosa Council, and this was never intended to be the case,” Ms Jackson said.

Ms Jackson said there was a “compelling requirement” to take action to “remedy this situation” and said she believed a review on the foundation’s governance and operations were a high priority for the new council. “The Noosa Biosphere is an international declaration of our shire’s commitment to environment, economy and community, and the Foundation should be impeccably governed and managed to these ends,” she said. “Noosa must get its Biosphere project right at this second attempt.” NBRF president Campbell Corfe declined to comment.

Braved the waves STEVEN Boyd and Tim Mandeville survived choppy surf conditions to swim over 28kms to raise funds for cancer research last weekend. Steven and Tim jumped into the surf on Friday 4 March and again on Saturday as part of the Cancer Council’s March Challenge fundraising campaign. Steven and Tim swam from Peregian to Teewah with only a support boat to ensure they didn’t meet any unfriendly marine creatures or dangerous conditions. Steven said the toughest part of the swim was around Hells Gates and across the river mouth. “Hells Gates was choppy, rough, dark and a bit scary,” he said. “The river mouth is the home of a mysterious marine creature but fortunately the support boat was scarier than anything in the water that day.” Steven hoped to raise $500 for cancer research but has smashed his goal with a total of $1000 raised so far.

Bittersweet end for celebrity By MEGAN OGLE IT WAS a bittersweet end for local celebrity Jo Beth Taylor as she left the South African jungle on Monday night (7 March). The I’m a Celebrity ... Get Me Out Of Here! contestant cheered and punched her fists in the air as her name was called out to leave the Channel Ten reality show after nearly five and a half weeks in the jungle. Jo Beth’s partner Matt Bennell said he was looking forward to welcoming her home and said he was able to talk with Jo Beth briefly at 1am on Tuesday morning between her many media interviews. “Jo Beth is looking forward to coming home but it's bittersweet as she was

so close to winning for World Vision,” Matt said. “She said the experience was mentally challenging and physically tough but also really rewarding.” Jo Beth had completed five and a half weeks in the jungle, lost over seven kilos and conquered her fear of heights but it was a switch in voting methods which Matt said quickly turned Jo Beth’s winning streak around. “When the voting switched over to include Twitter for finals week, that’s when things got tough,” Matt said. “Jo Beth has a great following in Australia but now she was up against people like Havana Brown and Shane Warne who have a massive Twitter following.”

Jo Beth Taylor conquered her fear of heights but will soon be miles high on her way back to Australia from South Africa. Jo Beth is due to land back in Queensland later this week and said she was looking forward to catching up with her son Christian and partner Matt.

Noosa Council Planning and Infrastructure director Martin Drydale said the council was thrilled to deliver the free bus initiative again this year in co-operation with Sunbus and Translink. “The free holiday bus initiative is ever-popular, with tens of thousands of people typically climbing aboard during the Easter and Christmas holidays,” Mr Drydale said. “More than 60 per cent of passengers polled during the recent Christmas free holiday bus initiative said they had access to a car in Noosa, so it’s great to see people actively choosing to take the bus instead.” The survey also found more than 50 per cent of passengers polled were locals. A LOCAL charity is set to move on to greener pastures thanks to the generous support of local clubs and volunteers. Not-for-profit organisation the Sunshine Butterflies will use $4000 donated through the annual Noosa combined Club Smile for a Child charity golf day to build a stable at the organisation’s new ‘Backyard’ located in Cooroibah. The new premises will consist of a five-acre hobby farm which will host social and recreational programs and activities for children and teens with a disability. Along with the new stable, the property will also have a purposebuilt horticulture training facility, barn yard and respite facility, creating a fun learning environment for members. Sunshine Butterflies CEO and founder Leanne Walsh said the support of the community and local clubs had made a big impact on

the organisation, and she was excited to turn her dream of a backyard into a reality. “The transformation from a five-acre patch of dirt to our ‘Backyard’ is impacting the lives of our members in ways that are hard to put in to words,” Ms Walsh said. “Their excitement has become infectious as we are turning this dream into a much-needed reality for the community. “It wouldn’t have been possible without local support and we are so excited to be one step closer to making our ‘Backyard’ available for the local community to enjoy with us. “We are so grateful to every person, each organisation, each hour given and every dollar donated - all of which make an incredible difference no matter how big or small.”

Noosa set to jazz it up By MEGAN OGLE THE Noosa Jazz Party looks to be the only jazz event to be held in Noosa this year as doubt surrounds the annual Noosa Jazz Festival which usually runs parallel to the Party. The annual Noosa Jazz Party, which is run by the Noosa Heads Jazz Club, is back again for its fifth consecutive year and is set to be bigger than ever. The Jazz Party kicks off on 26 August for 10 days of jazz, concluding on Sunday 4 August with a free public concert in the park.

Noosa Heads Jazz Club president Richard Stevens said tickets were already selling fast and over 29 musicians had been booked for the party. “Thousands of people attended the party last year and already people from New Zealand and Melbourne have called to book tickets and they’re selling fast,” Mr Stevens said. “We didn’t mean for the party to be a tourism event but it has definitely turned into that.” The highlight of the party will take place at The J, Noosa Heads, where over six hours of jazz will be played over four consecutive nights from 1 to 4 August.

Kitchen for hall A LOCAL community hall has received a much-needed kitchen, thanks to the generosity of a local business. The Memorial School of Arts Hall in Reserve Street Pomona has had a kitchen makeover, courtesy of Bunnings Hardware Stores. An enthusiastic team from the Noosaville and Gympie branches headed up by Bunnings’ Activity Organisers Siobhan Grey from Noosaville and Elaine King from Gympie spent two and a half

days transforming the kitchen from a tired unfriendly space into a modern and functional kitchen. The hall is an integral part of the Pomona community. On any week it is home to karate, indoor bowls, ballroom dancing, worship, zumba and yoga as well a venue for weddings, schools and the Antique and Collectibles fair. President of the Hall Committee Christine Harmon said that there was constant demand on the kitchen and that

it was important that it met contemporary standards of hygiene and convenience. “This new donated kitchen, together with updated appliances purchased by the Hall Committee means that the kitchen meets both of these standards,” she said. “We must also thank Brian O’Connor of Pomona for his initiatives and support in getting this project off the ground.”

Businesses will bear the brunt By MEGAN OGLE THE Chamber of Commerce and Industry Queensland (CCIQ) says small business will be impacted by a ban on single-use bags and has called for more consultation with the business community. CCIQ Director of Advocacy Nick Behrens said CCIQ acknowledged the management of single-use plastic bags in Queensland is an important environmental issue but said CCIQ would not support the implementation of policy that penalised or imposed significant operational restrictions for small businesses. “The Queensland business community is strongly committed to balancing environmental sustainability with economic prosperity and recognise the vital role in minimising the impact on the environment,” he said. “Despite a strong desire to do so, cost and expertise continue to represent the greatest barriers for participation in environmental management

and sustainability programs.” “Complexity and lack of experience in waste management are also significant prohibiting factors for Queensland small businesses.” Noosa Council candidate and advocate for Noosa’s Ban the Bag campaign Aaron White said he did not agree with the CCIQ and said they are looking at this “the wrong way”. “Banning the bag or putting a surcharge on single use plastic bags won’t cost business anything, as proven in other countries. It just changes consumer behaviour,” Mr White said. “I’m not sure how many images of strangled sea birds, choked turtles and beaches full of rubbish we have to see before we comprehend our over-use of oil-based plastic is simply irresponsible." Noosa Community Biosphere Association (NCBA) vice president John Wood said small businesses were actually better off financially by not supplying free plastic bags to

shoppers and instead should use this as an opportunity to utilise branded reusable bags. “From a business economics perspective not only do businesses incur the costs of giving customers plastic shopping bags, there is the added costs to council waste management,” Mr Wood said. “Essentially a business can create a marketing tool instead of incurring a supplies cost if they utilise reusable bags.” “They see the value-added marketing, sales and branding propositions for their businesses.” “Businesses have the ability to increase sales by selling reusable shopping bags and also create upselling incentives.” Mr Wood urged local business to make a sustainable change to their plastic bag usage by swapping over to 100 per cent biodegradable bags, considering charging for plastic bags, offering a small discount for customers who bring their own bags

$30,000 is an arresting result By MEGAN OGLE IN breaking news the Noosaville State Primary School deputy principal has been sentenced to a week in prison ... but it’s all for a good cause. Noosaville State Primary School chaplain Michelle Gameiro has placed a “citizen’s arrest” on deputy principal Wayne Carty and is calling on students and the community to help raise his “bail”. “We’re hoping to raise his $30,000 ‘bail’ which will go towards expanding the services

of chaplains at the school,” Ms Gameiro said. “We’ve called the fund-raising campaign, ‘I’m a Deputy ... Get me out of Here’ which is part of the overarching Keep Our Chappy campaign.” Mr Carty will be “arrested” at morning assembly on Friday 18 March by the school’s Adopt a Cop and will stay in a purpose-built “cell” on school grounds until his “bail” is raised, which Mr Carty hopes is sooner, rather than later. MAYORAL candidates faced tough questions last week at a breakfast meeting held by the Noosaville Association and Noosaville Business Association. Members of the associations joined mayoral and council candidates to discuss issues relevant to the Noosaville business community which included tourism, traffic, commercial expansion and the Noosa River Foreshore. MC Andy Phipps asked the mayoral candidates where they stood on the issue of permanent residents “taking up tourist beds” and asked what steps candidates would take “to stop the loss of holiday beds in the region”. Cr Bolton said the issue of permanent residents in holiday accommodation, while monitored by council, was linked to an underlying issue of affordable housing which needed to be addressed first. “This is a cause and effect issue; there is limited affordable housing so people live in holiday accommodation,” Cr Bolton said. “We need to address this in a holistic fashion by addressing the underlying cause, which is affordable housing, and lack of, so we can move on from there.” Candidates were also asked if they supported the Noosav-

Mayoral candidate Ray Kelly said he was concerned and suggested possible solutions to battle the congestion. “A couple of ways to address the traffic could be to look at a carpark which is out of town a little bit and running buses backwards and forwards,” Mr Kelly said. “The ferry is also very important here, too - you can park your car and utilise the ferry.” “We could also look at a no-car zone for particular hours during the day.”

Developing tensions By MEGAN OGLE NOOSA Parks Association (NPA) vice-president Michael Gloster has slammed a council candidate for not disclosing affiliations with a development group he claims “masterminded” the amalgamation of Noosa and Sunshine Coast shires. In a letter to the editor Mr Gloster said council candidate Stephen Boyd failed to disclose his membership with the Property Council of Australia (PCA) and said this would create an “inevitable conflict of interest” which was “highly disturbing”. Mr Gloster described the PCA as a “powerful developers’ lobby group” which he claims “helped mastermind the forced amalgamation of Noosa Shire with Maroochy and Caloundra Shires” in an attempt “to get rid of the Noosa Town Plan the development lobby so dislikes”. “Given his intimate links to the Property Council of Australia, does the Noosa community really want to risk electing Steven Boyd as a Noosa councillor who decides developer applications, let alone one who can directly influence the writing of the new Noosa Town Plan?” Mr Gloster said. Mr Boyd responded to Mr Gloster’s accusations saying the “assertions are a desperate political furphy” and “over-reaching”. “I am a past working group subcommittee member of the PCA,” Mr Boyd said. “As the manager of a local valuation practice I became a member of the regional Sunshine Coast Chapter

of the PCA in 2007. “When I left the practice to join the University of the Sunshine Coast in 2010 I resigned from the local chapter but continued in a ‘by invite’ capacity. “Any points of contact with the PCA related solely to my professional expertise and are documented as such. “The PCA has not contributed to my campaign and I have received no funding from any property-related entities.” Mr Boyd said Mr Gloster’s description of the PCA and its role in the amalgamation of the shires was “nonsensical and sensationalised” and “downplayed the role” of the Queensland Government of the day. “As a valuer active in the Noosa Shire around the time of forced amalgamation I can assure your readers that there was and always will be a clear relationship between Noosa Town Plan, the lifestyle it has supported and property values,” Mr Boyd said. “As a resident I voted yes for deamalgamation and as your councillor I promise to work to retain a Noosa Town Plan that protects our lifestyle, and ensures the Noosa experience for generations to come. “On or before 19 March our residents will ultimately make their decision; they can choose one councillor out of seven with an understanding of property, one of the seven who has the knowledge and is qualified to take the stand against improper development in our Noosa Shire and one who seems to be standing in the way of Dr Gloster’s undeclared agenda.”

Call to unite NOOSA councillor Frank Wilkie has weighed in on the divisions debate calling for no divisions for a united council and shire. Cr Wilkie said he believed a “nodivisions” Noosa shire will “ensure each locality continues to attract the attention it deserves” and “encourages greater co-operation and co-ordination between all representatives”. “I’ve worked in a Noosa with and without divisions and if you believe in a shire where councillors are working for all residents, and not just looking after their own patch, then no divisions delivers the best result,” Cr Wilkie said. “This term saw a diverse mix of councillors eventually arrive at unanimous, consensus decisions when it came to updating plans and policies and key projects.” Cr Wilkie said Noosa was a “very small place” and would urge the State Government to allow Noosa to remain a no-division shire saying attention would continue to be paid to the hinterland areas. “Successful futures for the hinterland’s heritage buildings remained just as much on the agenda as a new town plan enabling the highest and best use for land right across the shire,” he said. “You only have to look from the top of some of our taller mountains where you can virtually see Noosa’s four corners to realize that it’s a very small place after all.” “Too small for ‘us and them’. IT was the Tamworth Country Music Festival for 2016; home of the Golden Guitar Award and the major festival of its type in Australia. Gathered on the main stage were the MC and a group of judges who had just handed the compere a note on which was written the names of the three place getters; in the final of Junior Aristocrat Entertainer of the Year. Rated the biggest talent quest for juniors in Australia, it had been hotly contested with entertainers coming from all over this great country. First named was third place then second and finally the winners - from Tewantin in Queensland - the Dennis Sisters. The unbelievable had happened. This unknown but very talented duo of Briannah and Tiana Dennis, professionally known as the Dennis Sisters, had achieved the ultimate and swept all before them. For Brianna, 16, and Tiana, 15, it was an outstanding achievement. From Briannah (affectionately known in the family as Bri): "I was shocked, it was unbelievable”. Add to this Tiana's reaction: “Totally stunned; we would have been happy to just make the final.” Apart from the result, they said it had been a great learning curve, watching and learning for 10 days. Regarding the announcement, Lisa - the very proud mother - said: “We were near the back of the stage and when the girls missed out on the third and then second place, Tiana had turned her head and was just having a good look around. Then when they announced their name as winners she turned and the look on her face was worth its weight in gold - it made everything worthwhile.” It all started some three years ago when the

Dennis family, parents Mick and Lisa, daughters Briannah and Tiana, and son James - plus family friends - sat around a backyard barbecue to celebrate the 40th birthday of husband and father Mick. The afternoon was a joyous occasion and to make it special, youngest daughter Tiana, then aged 12, was asked by family members to sing a song she had written. After some encouragement from all present she said yes and then proceeded to sing her song entitled, About Me. Playing a guitar, an instrument on which she was self-taught, she sang. Among the family friends was a lady with a heavy musical background; having worked as a solo singer and back up for many artists of renown. Her name was Lease Vasey and, to say the least, she was very impressed. At the end Lease insisted, after picking up on the quality of her first original song, that the family did something about this young girl. Another to be impressed was a lady from the RSL entertainment circuit known simply as Dell.

Following this advice and encouragement, 18 months ago Tiana took her first big step and joined the AICM (Australian Institute of Country Music) in Gympie. In the meantime Brianna her older sister had ventured into the world of music by taking up saxophone lessons at primary school. However because of health reasons, she switched to the guitar and became self-taught on YouTube. Her next step was to follow Tiana and enroll as a member of the Gympie Academy. Following this they started taking lessons from Caitlyn Shadbolt, another young new country singer from Gympie, who had made a name for herself performing on the X-Factor. It was during this time that they met a man who was to play a major role in their musical career. His name was Dr Geoff Walden, a doctor of music, and he was known to one and all as Dr Rock. He did a lot of work with the girls and it was on his advice that Bri, changed to base guitar, thus enabling them to form a duo. For the girls it was Tiana who took the first step into the musical world of competition when, as a 14 year old in 2014, she competed as a solo artist at the Gympie Muster in the junior section. It was a great experience for two reasons. First was the fact that she made the final, and second that she sang on the main stage to a crowd of 2000 people. When asked how she felt, her reply said it all. “It was cool. I just said hullo and said I was going to sing for them; everything was just fine, I didn’t feel nervous.” For someone just starting out her relaxed stage presence was in the words of some Gympie Academy people, incredible. By 2015 the girls had formed a duo and this time made the opens of the Gympie Muster Talent Search. Now working more as a duo their confidence began to grow and this resulted in more gigs in clubs and hotels. In 2015 came their first trip to the famous

Tamworth. Both agreed that it was a fascinating experience. Working as a soloist at this stage,Tiana had the opportunity to take to the stage during breaks in Caitlyn Shadbolt's act at major hotels. “It was a great experience,” Tiana said. “I was learning all the time.” Then in January 2016, all the study, hard work, and travel - not only for the girls but also parents Mike and Lisa - really paid dividends when they were announced as the winners of the Junior Aristocrat Entertainer of the Year. Another member of the team who has made an outstanding contribution is producer and songwriter Jay Collie, one of those in the industry who has been signed by Sony Music. Collie, who hails from Sydney, has visited Tewantin on two occasions thus enabling the girls to study with one of the best. It was Collie who produced Tianas first EP entitled, Tiana Dennis, a disc which contains three tracks - Anymore and Sometimes both written by Tiana, and The Other Side that she co-wrote with Collie. Now Briannah, whose base guitar work during the Tamworth competition drew much praise from the judges, as she had only been playing 12 months, has also at 16 years of age embarked on a songwriting career. Between the two of them their number of originals are on the increase. With their ongoing music studies at the Gympie Academy, songwriting and gigs on the increase, education in the normal school system has become almost impossible. To combat this they have now embarked on the Online Distant Education System plus certificate three in music at Tafe, thus ensuring that their education will not be neglected. Bookings at such venues as Eumundies Green Room are starting to attract a following. If this is any indication then it seems safe to say that these two attractive quiet, well-mannered young ladies, are on the way to bigger things. In our community - despite their youth - let us acknowledge them as Our People.

COOROY and its residents have certainly been in the news of late, Impact Boxing Club head coach Mark Evans is the newly appointed president of Boxing Queensland. This is a terrific opportunity for Mark and his sport to really launch itself into the mainstream of local sport. Sunshine Coast athletes and coaches have been successful at Commonwealth and Olympic selection over many years. Mark is not the first Coast official to hold the coveted position, Palmwoods’ Ray Hardingham and Nambour's Bill Burow led by example during their terms. Both gentleman also were awarded positions on the 1982 Brisbane and 1994 Canada Commonwealth Games squads as manager and coach respectively. The Coast has been a hub for star boxers headlined by 2002 gold medallist Justin Kane and 1986 silver winner Rick Finch. Noosa’s Bob Wilson and Israel Kani were also successful amateur and professional fighters. Kani runs a successful gym at Noosaville. Mr Evans has already tasted success as a coach and has been the national development coach for some time. One of his roles is to travel Queensland conducting training camps for both fighters and coaches, which he has done with aplomb. The only problem he will encounter is the same obstacle that has faced all previous boxing/sport officials, parents and know-it-all coaches. This problem has been there since man first put on a glove, but the answer is quite simple. This is boxing not ballroom dancing, and

there are rules especially dealing with the dangers of the sport. Most of you would be well aware of the pitfalls associated with being hit in the head, especially if there is major force behind the punch. So in reality with the dangers involved, there must be hard and fast rules involved with no short cuts. Mark is also fortunate having so many local clubs who are all operating under the international rules and have quality coaches at the helm. Having the Gold Coast Games only just over two years away, the interest will only grow in the sport and probably lure more women into the fracas. Which isn’t bad as Australia won two gold medals in Glasgow 2014 - with Sydney lawyer Shelly Watts edging out India’s Laishram Devi in the lightweight category. Cooroy's other sports champion is another lightweight, Sue Stanley, who claimed victory at the inaugural Inspirational Woman Awards. Chosen from a quality field of eight, the diminutive but tough Ms Stanley was chosen for her lifetime of work with disabled athletes. Sue’s first foray into this arena was sparked by her record breaking son Clinton. Special Olympics first, tennis, athletics, Down Syndrome have all failed to stop this woman’s drive to help and encourage young men and women achieve their dreams. Well done Sue, your work is appreciated. However, I notice with great interest that other than Sandy Bolton, Frank Pardon and Joe Jurisevic, the majority of up-coming council nominee’s have had no or shown little interest in local sport. I have read all their proposed promises but I see nothing on local sport, that’s sad. Until next time

A remarkable job WITH just a couple of weeks remaining in the life of our first council since de-amalgamation, it’s time to congratulate Mayor Noel Playford and his team of councillors for the remarkable job they have done over the past two years. Starting from scratch they were up and running from day one ensuring their Noosa constituents would not suffer any disruption of services. Equally CEO Brett de Chastel working with limited time and resources pulled together a team of ’Can Do’ workers who immediately embraced the challenge of building a new council that would not only meet but exceeded the high expectations of Noosa residents. A disgusting display SAD to say that Tony Wellington showed his true colours, but not in a good way, at Pomona Meet the Candidates held last Saturday. His “potty mouth” BS remark in response to Sandy Bolton’s comment on a question from the floor was a disgusting display of arrogance and disrespect, not only to her, but the audience as well. While his supporters sniggered, all six of them clad in orange t-shirts, the audience was in shock and an audible gasp was heard throughout the hall. He didn’t even “man up” and apologise to Sandy or the audience for his inappropriate behaviour. I came with an open mind to hear all the candidates but after hearing Wellington ramble incoherently about his policies and use foul language I am in no doubt as to whom I would vote for mayor. MAYORAL candidate Tony Wellington has advertised that he had a “…proven willingness to fight for Noosa… . throughout the entire deamalgamation battle… as a councillor on both the Sunshine Coast Council and Noosa Council…” While creating the perception in the minds of electors that Tony did fight, they don’t actually say that he did anything other than being willing - most of us, 81.38 per cent in fact, were at least that. An orchestration of supporters’ letters in the local press in recent weeks exaggerating Tony’s contribution to the de-amalgamation battles have pre-conditioned readers to accept that he had a significant role in those fights. Tony has also chosen orange for his advertising, the colour of both the Noosa Independence Alliance and its Free Noosa campaign, to link him in our minds subliminally to the success of those august movements - very clever indeed. Tony has also claimed to be a member of Friends of Noosa, an organisation seminal to the pre-amalgamation and de-amalgamation battles under the formidable leadership of Jim Berardo and the inspirational Bob Ansett. For the record, the Friends of Noosa Committee first met on 22 September 2007. More than three months later on 7 January 2008, Tony Wellington became a committee member. However, his resignation from the FON Committee was accepted at its subsequent meeting six weeks later on 22 February 2008. Tony was never a paid-up member of FON, not between formation in September 2007 and November 2012, the final update of the membership list. By this time, the Newman LNP government had won office and the crucial deamalgamation battle had been won with Member for Noosa, Glen Elmes, delivering the right finally through four changes of LNP leadership for the Noosa community alone to vote for or against de-amalgamation. From this record, it may be seen that Tony’s direct involvement in Friends of Noosa was for a maximum of six weeks over more than five years. As he is offering himself to be our next

RECENTLY at a public meeting I was disappointed to hear mayoral candidate Sandy Bolton infer that she alone was responsible for the Heritage Celebrations the Noosa Museum and the Pomona Community are staging in April. Sandy would have us believe that eight weeks back she put all of this in train. Sandy, what about all of the volunteers who have been working very hard on this project for well over six-plus months to make the event a success? They must be quite surprised that their many hours of hard work have not been recognised and you alone have done everything. Please, when taking credit for everything, which has happened in Noosa over the last two years try to remember without your council colleagues, council staff and many unpaid volunteers all who have played a vital role in making Noosa a success, none of this would have been possible. In a community it takes a team to do things well and from the way you are presenting yourself you do not want to be part of this team you want us to believe that you can do it alone, and have done it alone. WHAT is a motherhood statement? It is a vague, pleasant, feel good statement that no-one can disagree with, which however, is lacking in specifics. For example, “Let’s create new and sustainable industries”. No-one would dispute such a notion; the real test comes when the person who makes such a statement is asked to explain how they propose to go about this. Motherhood statements are designed to make the listener feel warm and fuzzy, and kindly towards the person, usually a politician, making the statement. However, when considering who should have to top job, we need to see though this rhetoric and demand more specific details, and much more strategic policies. We need to also examine achievements. Feel-good statements are not enough. Our mayoral candidates offer us three very different options. Ray Kelly has worked hard and achieved much in Cooroy, but has not worked in a division-free council for the larger shire community. Tony Wellington is able to give many specific examples of his council achievements. Sandy Bolton is the queen of the motherhood statements. Before being a councillor she was tasked with saving the Cooroy Community Hall, and the Cooroy Bowls Club. Sadly, she did not succeed in either task. JO Ball’s effusive support for Tony Wellington (Noosa Today 3 March) via reference to the failed Noosa Parks Association controlled Noosa Biosphere Association opens the door for a reality check. NBA should not be confused with the community volunteer run Noosa Biosphere Ltd the officially endorsed UNESCO biosphere structure. NBA sat moribund and without public activity or creative program runs on the board for years. What NBA and Noosa Parks Association did was invent mischief which cruelly pillared the good work of the many volunteers creating the first iteration of Noosa Biosphere. Jo’s ‘hero’ did this under an official appointment email nominating Tony as ‘provocateur’. As publisher of an on-line rag called ‘The Gum Shoe’ dozens of attacks on many people were initiated. The good work Tony derided and tore into was mainly voluntary effort from nearly 100 people. Good reputations were fair game.

Property values build to new heights OFFICIAL new data shows the value of residential construction has reached new highs, according to the Property Council of Australia. Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) construction data released last week shows the value of residential construction work increased 11.7 per cent in the past 12 months - and reached $62.3 billion. The Property Council’s chief of policy and housing Glenn Byres said residential

construction continued to surge and was delivering economic growth, jobs and investment. “All states and territories bar the ACT recorded significant increases in the 12 months to December 2015,” he said. “There was good growth in the December quarter, with the value of residential construction increasing 2.8 per cent to more than $16 billion. The new data re-affirms the crucial role housing construction plays in our economy, particularly

during the transitional phase underway. “It also underlines that we can’t afford risky interventions in housing markets through changes to negative gearing, which helps 1.2 million Australians invest in property and build prosperity. “We can’t afford to tinker with investment in housing markets given the jobs, activity and economic growth that home construction generates through the economy.”

Key health areas THE Sunshine Coast has ranked as the 15th healthiest region in Australia, according to a recent study released by the Australian Heart Foundation. Over 92 regions were identified and the Sunshine Coast faired quite well with an activity level of 53 per cent and an obesity level of 21.1 per cent. Neighbouring regional areas appeared impacted by lifestyle choices with some regions showing an obesity level up to 44.4 percent with 74 per cent of the residents identified as being inactive. The capital cities took out the top spots with Inner City Melbourne showing the second proportion of obese residents at 13.9 per cent close behind the winner, Bondi, with only 13.7 per cent obesity level and up to 73.8 per cent activity levels. HERE is a list of recent local accomplishments that caught my eye: Expanded community engagement, Noosa Branding and Noosa Made, the Noosa Local Economic Plan, the Cooroy RV stop, Tait Duke Community Cottage, sealing of Dr Pages Road, Noosa Country Drive and shire-wide map, rural enterprise inclusion in the local economic plan, planning amendments for red tape reduction and rural enterprise. You may have thought these were the work of an experienced mayor, a team of councillors and a hard working staff. But no, they are just some of the “outcomes“ mayoral candidate Sandy Bolton is claiming for herself. The mayor, fellow councillors and in fact the entire council staff must be wondering why they need to set the alarm and turn up each morning when Sandy is there to handle pretty much all of Noosa’s big issues on her own. WHY the hell are we spending all this money on State and Federal elections? The public does its best to elect the right people to represent them, and then all the misgivings of those elected come out into the open. Forget declaring their finances, it’s their criminal or past history that we needed to know before deciding. I think they all need to take a Blue Card test before pre-selection. Once elected they become party inoculated and anything is possible to please the boys/ girls clubs. The country can’t afford these excuses for politicians. Laying claim

IN the climate of pending local government elections, Noosa is in danger of losing perspective. Most of our aspiring representatives beat the environmental drum, some, I fear, do so at the expense of looking after the population. For example, the prevailing solution to the increasing (and spreading) bat problem seems to be to double-glaze our windows and grin and bear it, or perhaps just move elsewhere. However the reality is that bats carry bacteria and viruses that include rabies and the deadly elisa virus. So the bottom line is: what do we require from our council in the event environmental issues clash with people’s wellbeing? Moreover, there seems to be a push for solar power by the Greens which is in concert with a proposed CEFC $250 million of taxpayer’s funds to local governments to back renewable energy. This appears to be premature as insufficient R and D has as yet been carried out on some solar aspects; one of which is that nitrogen trifluoride and sulphur hexafluoride has been traced back to the production of solar panels. These are some of the most potent greenhouse gases and have many thousand times the impact on climate change compared to carbon dioxide. A reality check is needed: stick with core requirements - annual kerbside cleanups; nature strips regularly maintained; public toilets and beach accesses properly maintained; and local roads repaired or upgraded. Studying the form OVER the last few weeks, I’ve been following the candidates for the next Noosa election with keen interest, and the three mayoral candidates are really lacking appeal - Ray is getting too old, Wellington lacks charisma and the lovely Sandy needs to stop trying to be one of the boys! I did find a lot to like with some of the council candidates at the last three “meet the candidates forums”. Mark Rodriguez, at times looks like he’d rather be sitting in his taxi, but he has some great ideas and common sense. Mark Denham really likes talking about himself! Ingrid Jackson looks like a lovely lady, but watch out she can bite. Patrick Lloyd is a real goer, but got caught short on too many subjects, and may be better prepared next time around. Jess Glasgow always has a cheeky smile on his face, but needs to learn to show respect and stand up when addressing voters. The lovely Elaine Williams seems to be right out of her league at times. Brian Stockwell is trying so hard to stand out, but leaves a very soft impression. And finally, Ken Coleman: This guy is the dark horse, definitely the most impressive of all the new faces, plenty of charisma, great speaker, abundant knowledge on all Noosa topics, very positive and full of common sense. The whole picture ALLOW me to explain why Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation could impede Noosa’s future prosperity. Noosa Parks Association has applied for funding to pursue World Heritage Listing and Recognition from UNESCO for Noosa’s Biosphere. Although this may seem beneficial, if granted, regulations imposed by NBRF will impose additional barriers to development proposals; applicants will have to comply with Noosa’s restrictive Town Plan before satisfying environmental heritage regulations. Backers of NPA/NBRF plan to establish an Eco Tourism hub while expanding the biosphere’s boundaries. As a de-amalgamated under-resourced council, Noosa needs a new team of progressive councillors who can re-direct their energies to policies that will improve the whole community. Civic question AT the Cooroy mayor and councillor candidates meeting I asked the following question. “The Civic expansion submission advised that the expanded Civic would create 900 full and part time jobs, what plan do the candidates for mayor have in place to create this number of jobs over the next three years.” I asked the question above, because we have in the Noosa Council area a large population of people under 24 years of age, we have people who travel to Maroochydore, and other areas outside Noosa to their jobs, because they cannot find suitable work in Noosa, and we have a very large number of Year 12 students who finished last year, and going forward another lot of students coming through on a yearly basis, some of whom will want to work in the Noosa Council area. Tony Wellington who is leading the antiCivic debate did not answer the question; instead he gave all the reasons why he leads the charge to stop the proposed expansion of Civic. Tony Wellington should outline to all Noosa residents, and in particular the ones above what plan he has in place to create 900 full and part time jobs over the next three years? An eye on the future MAYORAL prospect Sandy Bolton thinks the planning scheme needs work! Noosa’s planning scheme underwrites much of what separates Noosa from the suburban mediocrity of Australia. It dictates where and what we build, and history shows it must be defended staunchly. Failure to defend even minor aspects of the plan will inevitably open cracks which opportunistic property developers and others will smash wide open, to their own self interest. Talk of ‘work’ on the plan is a dog whistle to rent-seekers, many who don’t live in Noosa, but watch for any weakness in the planning scheme or the councillors who control it. To such individuals, ‘work’ means potential negotiation around difficult issues of building density, height and quality. Don’t be fooled. The fight for Noosa is not over, and likely never will be. Vigilance and the careful selection of mayor and councillors are the only things which will protect Noosa. On 19 March, when looking at your voting paper, consider the Noosa of today, the people who have worked tirelessly to ensure its current status and then vote for those you trust to ensure its continued sustainability. Kids are really kept in touch NOOSA Touch has come away on top after a successful win at the recent Sunshine Coast and Fraser District Junior Regional Championships held at Caboolture. Over 80 junior touch players travelled to the event competing in girls and boys divisions in Under 12, 14, 16 and 18. In very hot conditions, the weeks of training and commitment paid off with all teams making it through to the semi-final stage. All girls’ teams made it to the grand final deciders along with the Under 12 and 14 boys. The Under 10 girls’ were perhaps the most spectacular who, even though they were the smallest in stature, they were the mightiest of champions as they walked away with the title of Regional Champions.

PBs smashed in the pool THE Eumundi Swim Club battled through a long and hot weekend of swimming at the Wide Bay Championships held in Hervey Bay to come out as winners on all levels. Personal best times were not just beaten, but smashed by squad members with some exceptional swims over the two days with Troy taking out Age Champion and Kaitlyn backing up one final after another and competing in team relays.

Melanie Wright (nee Schlanger) was in attendance to present Championship medals to all 9 to 12-year-olds who achieved qualifying times for the meet and Eumundi swimmers Amali, Mitchell and Liam were awarded individual medals for qualifying for all four events. Coach Adrian Williams said he was delighted with the level of performance and attitude of his team.

“This time next year, it would be great to bring along an even bigger squad and to see how far the current swimmers can progress,” he said. “We have seen some major improvements already and the future looks bright.” “Age Nationals are still to come and congratulations to Troy Carlson, Kaitlyn Walker and Lachlan Constable for reaching this level.”

Swim stars off to Adelaide SEVEN Good Shepherd Aquatics Swim Club Noosa swimmers will be flying the flag for their club and Queensland when they head to Adelaide at the end of March to compete at the Georgina Hope Foundation Australian Age Swimming Championships. The Georgina Hope Foundation Australian Age Swimming Championships are organised by Swimming Australia with swimmers needing to qualify at state level to be eligible to compete in the national competition. While all seven swimmers qualified to swim at the Age Swimming Championships, two swimmers, Arna Couper and Dahlas Rogers also qualified to swim at the Open Australian Championships and the Olympic Qualifiers.

River running hot By JACK MANGROVE THE Noosa River has been really firing after the rain - good quality flathead have been taken from all the favourite spots, Tewantin Ski Run, Lake Cooroibah, Weyba Creek and the river mouth. The flatties are taking a liking to small fish baits like frog mouthed pilchards and hardy heads. Another great way to target these tasty fish is to use soft plastics, for me brighter colours seem to work best. Another fish we are seeing good numbers of is mangrove jack, the best catches seem to be at night with angler fishing pylons and jetties. Live bait has been the most productive but hard body suspending lures have also claimed their fair share of fish. The bread-and-butter species of whiting and bream have been in good numbers along Gympie Terrace, the dog beach and from Woods Bay shorelines. Baits like worms, prawns and yabbies have all captured some quality fish for the table. Trevally have been in outstanding number with the lower reaches of the river producing some cracker fish - giant trevally and big eye trevally have been feeding hard on bait forced down river by the fresh water. The low light periods have been best; with surface lures like popper and surface walker doing the job. Crabs are still in good num-

Staying strong Neome Butler with a 50cm trevally. bers. With the fresh water in the system, look to place your pots in the deeper parts of the river adjacent to mangrove areas. There are a number of different baits used, but the most consistent performer has to be fresh mullet. There has been a slight drop in the winds over the last week with some of the larger boats making their way over the bar. Most have still tended to fish the closer reefs so they can make a quick dash for home if conditions worsen. Sunshine Reef has been popular with the charter boats and the anglers on board have been well rewarded with sweetlip, coral trout, cod, maori cod, pearl perch

and a host of other species hitting the decks. Other recreational anglers have reported pelagics including spanish and spotted mackerel as well as tuna. Trolling lures has been a little tough with some of the sloppy conditions, so most anglers tended to drift and through slugs. On the beach, those swells we had a week or two ago have really created some great gutters along the beaches of Noosa’s North Shore. There have been reports of tailor starting to show up in numbers down around the Gold Coast, this may mean a early migration this year. Conditions are perfect if this is the case as the gutter are

Pilchards on ganged hooks would have to be one of the most used baits for tailor, and cast into the waves at the back of the gutter and rolled under the white water should see a result. Dart are in big numbers at the moment and actually have a bit of size to them, with fish touching the 50cm mark reported. Whiting and bream are also in those same gutters and are feeding on worms and pippies. So on behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures.

Gala night indeed sport By RON LANE IT WAS definitely a gala evening. Black tie, 1200 guests in attendance a brilliant MC and a floor show second to none. The occasion was the Keno and Clubs Queensland Awards for Excellence 2016. Held at the Convention Centre south Brisbane, for our two local surf clubs Noosa Heads and Sunshine Beach it was indeed a night to remember. For the Noosa Surf Club ably managed by Anton Mogg, they came home with two awards; the first being the Best Community Service by a Licensed Club (small) and the Best Club on the Sunshine Coast. For Sunshine their award was for Best Surf Life Saving Supporter Club (small). This was indeed an award well-earned as the club has on entering, that most important of all feelings, happy relaxed and friendly. Regarding their awards, Noosa manager Anton Mogg said, “We are really happy with the Community Award as this gives us recognition for our support of sporting

clubs in our community. For our clubs' future plans, we have two main objectives - to become more involved with other clubs and a major upgrade of our club facilities." It is interesting to note that in the last month Noosa delegates have attended two functions and both have emphasised the need for our clubs to make our communities more aware of our involvements with local clubs, and, in the words of a guest speaker at the Clubs Queensland Dinner “let us step in and support struggling clubs in our communities.” Having said that, the Noosa Club will this Sunday run a big beach party to celebrate the Festival of Surfing, and all funds raised will be shared among the four football codes played locally. For every club member who comes through the door, his entry fee will go back to his club as a donation. Turn up and support your club. Reason for this is that during winter a large number of our young lifesavers have football as their winter sport; therefore the support of our youth almost becomes a yearly thing.

Joey, epitome of club By GEN FRASER NOOSA beach goers will be looked after by some of Australia’s best lifesavers in years to come based on recent stellar performances by Noosa at the Queensland Surf Rescue Championships. Joey Goulding from Noosa SLSC encompasses everything the club stands for and was named Finalist in the Under 14 Junior Lifesaver category. Joey epitomises the spirit of the club with his commitment to patrol hours, carnival performance, community involvement and youth development. Being named as a finalist puts him among the best Queensland has to offer as well as a role model for aspiring Nippers. NHSLSC came second overall (on handicap points) at the championships, held at Mermaid Beach and judges at the event congratulated the entire Noosa team on their manner and skills. Lara Porter and Lilly Tindal will be representing the club at the Australian Surf Lifesaving Titles in April this year after their wins. Lilly won Gold noosa.starcommunity.com.au

in the Under 14 Champion Lifesaver, and it was silver for Lara and Lilly in Under 15 First Aid. Sarah James and Sally Wytenburg showed the depth in the club with a third in the Under 17 First aid. Lilly Tindal, Lara Porter, Joe Goulding and Tim Moody won the Under 15 Patrol Competition silver. A big thank you to inspirational coach Charlotte Webber who worked tirelessly with the team over the past couple of months. Her skills, knowledge and dedication turned their potential into reality. The young lifesavers and their coach spent many hours on the beach, studying and practising scenarios over the school holidays. For the first time in many years, Noosa had two first aid teams, the second team being made up of Grace Sunley, Charlie Seels, Tessa West and Elle Sparks. They, along with Jack Frey, also participated in the First aid competition. For first timers in this competition, the NHSLC is thrilled with these results and there is much discussion among other Nippers who wish to part of this great program next year.

IT IS now two years since Robbie Elphinstone of the Alexandra Headlands Surf Life Saving Club, after completing the Noosa Blue Surf Swim, wandered away to see what a group of Noosa clubbies were doing further down the beach. Surrounded by a large group of children, he discovered he was in fact watching the Noosa Seahorse Nipper members, those little people in need of special help, go about their games and water activities. “From that first encounter until now, two years ago seems like a long time; but when you see what is happening here today, it makes it all worthwhile,” Robbie said. What was happening was the first ever Saturday morning activities for the newly formed Alexandra Headlands Seahorse Nippers. Under the help and guidance of the Noosa team ably led by foundation members Steve and Nikki Mawby, their two-year dream was becoming a reality. To have a total of 37 children enrolled and a total of 76 helpers on hand to supervise and run events, the future of this new club looks assured. With the increasing call for our clubs to become more involved in our communities, there could not be a better way to start. The morning events started at 9am when Noosa Leader Donald McKill led the Nippers on a short run, then the activities really got underway. Beach flags, the parachute and water events; for some the first hour went only too quickly. Alex club CEO Ashley Robinson said, “We are very grateful to the Henzells Foundation who has come on board as our major sponsor. It is their support that makes all this possible, so many thanks to them."

At the end of the session, the Noosa people were very pleased with the outcome. Team leader Donald McKill said, ‘’For this their first hit out, the response has been fantastic and if Alex can keep this number of helpers it will give us another successful Seahorse Nipper Club on the coast.” On Saturday, the Noosa boat crews competed in a major carnival at Coolum, and in conditions that can only be described as big and choppy their results were good; with U/23s reserve grade and masters finishing in the top three in all races. Speaking after the carnival boat sweep coach David Tomba said, “The state titles are just weeks away, so for us this has been a great preparation for all grades. To finish in the top three in nearly all our races is very satisfying. Most important with a full-on program like we have had today, it is a great indication as to our fitness level.” Happy to note that joint training squads of Noosa and Sunshine Beach are still being conducted. At present a combined team of 21 members are undergoing SRC and bronze medallion training at both beachers. The Noosa contingent of 14 are doing their bronze and the eight from Sunshine are made up of three bronze and five SRC. Final assessment for this group is set for 20 March, and if successful they will be available for Easter patrols. Tonight Thursday another team of 11 will start their IRB (inflatable rescue boat) training. This will consist of 10 crewies and one driver. With the ever increasing call on IRBs for patrol support, it is of the utmost importance to keep up the numbers in this department. As we have stated before, the problem of unpatrolled beaches in our National Park is here to stay. Therefore, the courtesy patrol with their IRB crews are now paramount. We wish them well.
