POPULAR Channel Seven television personality Liz Cantor will join a raft of other celebrities and locals in the Celebrity Grape Crush on Saturday as the 50th Stanthorpe Apple and Grape Harvest Festival moves into high gear this weekend. Liz Cantor, who presents the Gold Lotto Draw and weather, and has roles on Queensland Weekender and Creek to Coast, will join other celebrities, including fellow Weather Presenter Livio Regano. As part of the Breeze/Rebel FM Carnival, the grape crush will be held between 4pm and 4.30pm, near the Stanthorpe post office. The beloved event will see celebrities and local identities come together to compete for the title of Queensland Grape Crushing Champion. Ms Cantor said she was looking forward to visiting for the Stanthorpe Apple and Grape Festival. “I can’t wait to get messy in the Grape Crush,“ she said. As well as her grape crushing role, Ms Cantor will also be a co-master of ceremonies for the When in Rome Festival Ball tomorrow night. Casual and caring CASUALLY dressed council workers have helped Southern Downs Animal Rescue and Kare (ARK) continue its important work in rescuing and rehoming unloved, forgotten and abandoned animals. Southern Downs Regional Council staff went Casual for a Cause last month all in the name of helping others. At last week’s general council meeting, Mayor Peter Blundell presented a staff donation of $420.95 to Southern Downs ARK president Ann Simon. “Southern Downs ARK is the fifth local not-for-profit community organisation nominated by staff to receive donations under the staff Casual for a Cause initiative,” he said. “Council staff dressed down and made donations throughout December and January for Southern Downs ARK and the considerable donation of $420.95 brings the total staff donations made since the start of this initiative to a whopping $1866.25. “This is also an opportune time to acknowledge the tremendous work and efforts of Southern Downs ARK in rehoming animals and the great working relationship that has developed between ARK and council to enable this rehoming to occur. “Notably, this has resulted in a vast decrease in the number of animals at council’s pounds needing to be euthanised. A very positive outcome for these animals and for our region.” In response to the staff donation, Southern Downs ARK president Ann Simon thanked staff for their generosity. “Southern Downs ARK really appreciates the donation. We don’t only take dogs from council’s Stanthorpe and Warwick pounds, we

In brief Police attend twice EXCESSIVE alcohol was a key contributor to a violent assault in Noble Street on Thursday 25 February, according to Stanthorpe police. Officer in Charge Senior Sergeant Mark Ireland said police received calls regarding a loud disturbance at about 6pm and upon arrival found a 38-year-old man bleeding profusely from a head wound after he was struck by an object by a second male at the scene. He said the injured man was treated at the scene and transported to Stanthorpe Hospital. A domestic violence order was later taken out by police. A short time later police were called to reattend the premises where a 59-year-old woman was escorted from the scene and charged with breaching a domestic violence order. The 38-year-old injured man discharged himself from hospital the following day and is in a satisfactory condition.

Mayor Peter Blundell presents a staff donation to Southern Downs ARK president Ann Simon. take cats and, in fact, in the last 12 months we’ve taken nearly 400 cats and about 50 dogs and puppies. “We have a lot of help from rescue groups in Brisbane and on the coasts who take more dogs than we do, as we’re so very small and it’s such a small community here. “We do get quite a few adopted here but they, of course, are able to adopt out more animals down there.

“It’s an absolute pleasure dealing with the Warwick and Stanthorpe pounds and particularly council’s Animal Control Officers, Pam, Amanda and Matt, who are so very very helpful to us,” Ms Simon said. The Mayor added: “I’d also like to take this opportunity to announce that Granite Belt Support Services is the chosen recipient for the Casual for a Cause staff donations collected

throughout February and council will certainly look forward to presenting them with the next round of staff donations.” Council’s Casual for a Cause initiative makes it easy for staff to show their support for important services, and particularly those that are volunteer-based, like the Southern Downs ARK, through a co-ordinated donation program.

A 47-YEAR-OLD man reported swearing loudly and behaving in a disorderly manner in Davadi Street last Tuesday afternoon received a Public Nuisance Infringement for his behaviour. On Friday evening police responded to calls regarding the behaviour of two men at the intersection of Maryland and Railway streets. Both men, aged 40, were issued with Infringements for Public Urination. Stanthorpe police were kept busy with public nuisance offences over the weekend. Senior Sgt Ireland said that about 11pm on Saturday police were called to an address in Leslie Parade in relation to a noise complaint. He said at this time a 30-year-old male resident was given an official direction to cease the noise, which he did. A short time later police re-attended to find the male, intoxicated, naked at the front gate to his resident and abusive towards police. He was subsequently charged with wilful exposure. About 1.45am police located three intoxicated males being ejected from licensed premises in Victoria Street. All three were issued with infringements for Public Nuisance offences.

Equipment misapplication Inefficient work practices. Layers of unnecessary management. Lack of Project Management to finish works ontime. No accountability for cost over runs. · An efficient Council can better serve the residents, attract new business, and promote the growth of this region. Reform is needed now. These massive rate increases must stop. The SDRC must become a leaner and an efficient organisation.

I know that when the next generation of leaders emerge, my time in local government will be well over. I also know that there are things we need to prioritise now so that the next generation isn’t burdened with our mistakes. I am willing to make the tough choices because future generations depend on us making the right decisions now. Over the next few weeks I will be explaining what I see as our top priorities over the coming years and why it is so important to keep this focus. PRIORITY 2: SOUND INVESTMENT ATTRACTION The most successful economic development initiatives are proven to be those that work with the business community, and those who have proven success in investment and business management. I formed the Southern Downs Futures board with key industry leaders, but did not get the support of Councillors to drive this strategy. If elected for a second term, I will push for this board to become Southern Downs Enterprise, modelled on successful models similar to Toowoomba and Townsville. This model sees economic development and investment incentives driven by the business community, while supported at arms length by Council. It will be based on sound business cases with strong financial modelling, rather than pie in the sky ideas dreamed up by Councillors who have little understanding of economic principles. The focus of investment attraction needs to be realistic and focus on our strengths. The key areas should focus on:

People power

ON 19 MARCH Queenslanders will be asked to make an important decision about our state’s future. On the same day as the local government elections, voters will be asked to decide whether the term of our State Parliament should be changed from an unfixed three-year term to a fixed, fouryear term. I am supporting fixed terms because they will provide far greater certainty for Queenslanders and take away any political opportunism that can play a part in government decisions on election timing. This reform will put a ‘leg-rope’ on politicians who are used to calling elections at a time that suits them, and often well ahead of when an election is due. There are solid practical reasons to introduce fixed four-year terms. Over the years I’ve had many people approach me asking for greater clarity on the issue given the significant impact an election can have on the day-to-day running of businesses and people’s personal lives, whether it be planning holidays around an election or simply deciding how to place their vote. Fixed terms will also remove the constant election date speculation from our political process and provide the certainty and confidence to business that we know drives investment and job creation in our region. Voting yes will mean the voters of Southern Downs the right across Queensland will know exactly when an election will be held and can plan accordingly.

REGARDING upcoming council elections, I believe that in the past I have been guilty of being a lazy voter when it comes to the local council elections by not checking the credentials and talents of the people nominating before voting. I also think that a lot of other people in this shire have been the same and that this has resulted in the poor outcomes we have had over the past 10 years. Amalgamation has not helped and, again, this has taken place because we, as state voters, have not exercised our rights and asked enough questions of the State Government which is driving a lot of legislation that we do not understand. If we expect to have our shire run fairly and efficiently we must know who the people are, what they stand for and what plans and expertise they have to achieve a fair and balanced outcome for the peoples of the shire before we give them our vote. The problem I see is that we do not ask enough questions before we vote. We also don’t realise how much power we, as voters, have. Dorothy Lennox, Thulimbah.

Merits and morals TO OUR council knockers: “There is so much bad in the best of us, And so much good in the worst of us, That it hardly behoves any of us, To talk about the rest of us.” I would like to congratulate our present councillors on the manner by which they are conducting their own election campaigns by not

criticising other candidates but just listing their visions for the council’s future and their own past achievements. Perhaps the devils we know may be better than the devils yet to be tried. Council clean-out I HAVE had a lot of people saying it is no good voting for a few new councillors. We need a complete new council as there are some councillors on the council for 12 and 16 years and people are saying they are on the council only for the money and it is time for a complete change. Key performance criteria WITH all the candidates running for council office, they sound much like politicians telling us what they promise to do. Let us reverse the situation where the ratepayers lay down the rules of hiring, as is done in other businesses. Such as the following to begin with: Will you give a written guarantee to freeze councillor remuneration for the duration of the next council term? At the end of the term you may call a public meeting for the public to decide if councillors should have a raise, much like a shareholders’ meeting. Will you guarantee there will be no reintroduction of water fluoridation? Will you guarantee there will be no other form of mass medication such as vaccinations? Will you install a PA system in council meetings so that members in the public gallery can clearly hear proceedings? Will you instruct the Local Government Association (LGA) that ratepayers are the ultimate authority, not the LGA? We can then apply this grass roots movement to state and federal governments! For the past nine years I have owned a small business (Eagleboys Pizza) with my family. Over the past couple of years we have reached all our set targets, KPI’s and matched or bettered our previous year’s results as set by our head office. Was one of only three stores that achieved the set targets in the “high five Club”. This has been through the so called lean years of business. Through just these experiences I believe demonstrate that I am prepared to work hard, listen to our residents and put their issues forward to council. It also shows that I am prepared to make hard decisions when called upon to make sure all our targets are reached without compromising our service. I am always looking outside the box to achieve our results which will be needed in Council. We need to kick start the industrial estates again to get industries to expand or come out here so that our employment can be increased, look at the inland rail loop to see how we can benefit from it, must buy from and use local businesses and share it around with all without favour. Council needs to have an incentive scheme to open the doors to new industries/ enterprises and not continue with the closed door attitude. Let’s get over the “them and us” and we work towards the same goals, a more efficient council, debt lower and all areas growing and expanding because of the new Council being proactive and progressive.

Andrew Gale GETTING the council back in contact with the community and getting the financial situation back under control are two of the major issues Andrew Gale sees as paramount to the success of the council in the upcoming four years. “The job of the new council will be very hard, given that they are hamstrung by the existing debt and unless immediate savings measures are introduced, I believe that council will have to continue going to the ratepayers with outrageous rate rises in order to keep the council running.” If elected, Andrew promises to fight for the community and would use his business and public sector experience to attempt to bring a cultural shift to council that focuses on thriftiness, efficiency and community consultation. Andrew Gale is 47 years old. He and his family moved to the Southern Downs in 2005 after a career dating back to 1988 with the Queensland Police Service. He owns and runs a highly successful, customer-focused training business, “AG Licensing” which was established in 2006.

John Rye JOHN Rye decided to nominate for council because he believes people cannot do anything constructive by sitting on the fence and slinging criticism. The 63-year-old is a former tradesperson, Tafe teacher and manual arts teacher for 30 years. He has also managing the Warwick Red Cross Store for two years, been a Mission Australia Employment consultant and Eagleboys franchisee operator for nine years. Married for 42 years, he has three children and five grandchildren. Two of his children live in Warwick. John said he believes the council needs to reduce the budget without reducing services. “It needs to be proactive and introduce incentives to get industries and other businesses into our region,” he said. “The council needs to get a works program going so that we are not faced with major issues in regard to water/ sewerage pipes, causeways and bridges. “It also needs to prioritise work programs and stick to it as well as redoing the strategic plan and make sure it is always at the forefront when discussing other issues and aim to not deviate from it to short fix.”

David Brailey DAVID Brailey has lived in Warwick with his wife Keiko for almost 20 years and is a self-funded retiree. “I have been a teacher and principal at both primary and secondary levels for approximately 40 years having taught in New Zealand, Australia, Hong Kong, Thailand and Japan,” he said. “Leading up to retirement I was the teacher/ librarian at the Warwick State High School for 10 years. “In the early 2000s I sought to establish the Warwick Christian College which opened in 2007 with myself as the first board chairman. “My decision to stand for council came after much deliberation and the path of participation rather than standing back and being a critic motivated me. “The biggest challenge as I see it is getting the region back on track with sensible and realistic goals.”

BUSKERS from near and far descended on Stanthorpe on Saturday for the South East Queensland Regional Finals of the Australian National Busking Championships. Music filled the air as the Stanthorpe Rotary Club hosted the event which saw buskers on the streets of the town. The bigger winners of the day were the very popular String Family which took out the open section ahead of Katie Who and Peta Pomerenke. The String Family also figured strongly in the People’s Choice award, missing top spot by just a point from winner Georgia Marcus with David and Sarah Hume in third. The champion primary school was Dalveen State School while in the secondary age group 31 Waves took the title ahead of Chasing the Fence and Laura Luscombe. Best Band on the day was Aestas while the ability award went to Short Street Connection and the Multicultural Award went to Jenny and Tiffany. The other award winners included Popular Award - Bush Nutz; Family Award - The String Family; Classical Award - Mat Brooker; Youth Encouragement Award - Rowan Russell; Bluegrass Award - Chloe Nott; Country Award - Ebony Jade; Colm Largey - Most Innovative Busker Award and Special Judges Award to the Blundells. Terry West was out and about on the streets of Stanthorpe with his trusty camera for the event.

The Stanthorpe Rodeo is an annual event, though this year it forms part of the Apple and Grape entertainment. Riders will come from all over South East Queensland and Northern NSW to take part in the full rodeo program. However, they will face

plenty of tough local opposition from a classy local contingent which will include Tommy Allen, Nikolas Charlton, Billy Galloway, Aiden Halford, Lukas Wilkinson and Adam Williamson. The rodeo will include eight open events, two novice and four junior events including Bull Ride ($500), Saddle Ride ($500), Bareback Ride ($500), Rope and Tie ($500), Steer Wrestling $500, Team Roping $500, Barrel Race $500, Breakaway Roping $500, Novice Bareback Ride $250, Novice Bull Ride $250, Junior Bull Ride $100, Junior Barrel Race

$100, Junior Breakaway Roping $100 and Poddy Ride $100. Gates open at 10.30am, with the rodeo starting at 2pm. Mik Oberle will performing when the rodeo finishes, entertaining through to midnight. TIME turned back in Leslie Park on Saturday as the Canton of Stegby medieval re-enactment group moved in for the day. Covering the areas of Warwick, Stanthorpe and the Southern Darling Downs in South East Queensland, the group are part of the Kingdom of Lochac which covers Australia and New Zealand (Big Island and Crescent Isles respectively) and are part of The SCA Ltd, or Society for Creative Anachronism Limited. The SCA Ltd is a non-profit, educational organisation whose aims include re-creating the arts and crafts of the pre-17th century world. They get together to learn skills and crafts including cooking, fighting, and everything inbetween, and they have a lot of fun doing it. They are as much a recreation group as a re-creation group - that is they do what they do as much for fun as for authenticity. The group meet at the Senior Citizens Hall in Albert Street, Warwick (Cnr Guy Street - Opposite Leslie Park), every Wednesday night. The Wednesday meeting times are: 7:30pm - 9:30pm AEST (they do NOT observe Daylight Savings Time) at the Senior Citizens Hall. By JOYCE MARSH WOODENBONG CORRESPONDENT ANOTHER nonagenarian for Woodenbong as pocket rocket and energetic community member Nan Krarup celebrated her 90th birthday at the Woodenbong Golf Club. The Golf Club was an open house for all her family, friends and neighbours to join her to celebrate turning 90. Starting with morning tea and then lunch and including musical entertainment, Nan had a chance to show off her dancing skills before sharing her birthday cake specially made

and decorated by Margaret Martin. Nan along with her husband, the late Claude Niels Krarup, settled at Boomi Creek in 1946 before moving to Woodenbong village in 1948. They were married for almost 43 years, they have two children, son David and daughter Cheryl. Well loved and admired for her community spirit, Nan was actively involved with Red Cross catering for all the cattle sales and a cleaner at the Woodenbong Central School for 20 years.The highlight for Nan on her special day was to be made a Life Member of the Woodenbong Golf Club.

Boost for local arts creativity A DIVERSE range of creative arts and cultural projects will unfold around the Southern Downs as part of one of the state’s most active arts programs, the Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF). The RADF is a partnership between the Queensland Government and Southern Downs Regional Council to support local arts and culture in regional Queensland. At its general meeting a week ago, council approved six projects from across the region which will benefit from more than $33,800 in funding under the second RADF Round for 2015/'16. Southern Downs Regional Council’s director Planning, Environment and Community Services Ken Harris said

council was pleased with the high standard of applications received. “In the main, council continues to receive not only welldeveloped but exciting applications for projects which will continue to strengthen the important arts and cultural fabric of our region,” he said. Premier and Arts Minister Annastacia Palaszczuk said the Queensland Government was providing $2.08 million in 2015/'16 for the Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF), a state and local government partnership with 59 local councils across Queensland. “The $2.08 million will leverage approximately $1.8 million from local councils, and means an anticipated total of $3.9 million will be avail-

A licensed tradie is just the ticket By TANIA PHILLIPS WHEN trying to keep renovation or building costs to the absolute minimum, DIY or handyman work tends to take a more favourable step forward over hiring a licensed plumber or gasfitter. However, according to the Master Plumbers’ Association of Queensland, by doing this consumers are putting themselves and their family’s health at risk as well as facing legal and financial implications. Something that is not widely known by people outside the trade is that undertaking plumbing or gasfitting works without the appropriate licence is actually illegal. And getting caught out is only a matter of time - the Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC)

and the Department of Natural Resources and Mines are constantly investigating unlicensed works and are encouraging licensed individuals to notify them when something isn’t right. Master Plumbers’ Association of Queensland (MPAQ) president Kelvin Slade urges consumers to ask the plumber and/or gasfitter that they chose to produce their licence prior to engaging in any plumbing or gasfitting work. “By requesting a valid licence from a plumber or gasfitter you are able to check that they are qualified and appropriately licensed to undertake the work,” Mr Slade said. “If they cannot produce their licence or evidence of their licence number, do not engage in any work with them, the best

way to avoid this happening is to use a Master Plumber.” Master Plumber’s are appropriately licensed and abide by a code of conduct that ensures consumers are protected. LEAGUE lovers the wait is all but over with the NRL season kicking off this evening when the resurgent Eels take on the Broncos who looked to be almost as slick in their World Club game against Wigan as they did in the 2015 grand final. They are not early premiership favourites for no reason. Parra fans must be heartened by their club’s success in the trials. They swept aside the opposition in the Auckland Nines without their stars. This game will be a test for both sides while Footy tipsters will be at sixes and sevens this week as everyone finds their feet. My 2016 top eight in no particular order are the Broncos naturally followed by the Cowboys, Warriors; Rabbitohs; Eels; Roosters; Storm; Bulldogs - the smokies might come from Canberra or the Sharks. The Cowboys have retained their premiership winning 17 for their opening game and look an even better side than in 2016 as their combinations mature. Hard to see their odds in the premiership race shortening unless heaven forbid something untoward besets the mercurial JT. This season the new interchange rule is sure to play its part as will the introduction of the shot clock. My tips for the opening round are Broncos; Manly; Raiders; Warriors; Cowboys; Rabbitohs; Titans; Storm. The game of the round on paper looks to be the Roosters Rabbits clash at Allianz. Not hard to guess where you will find me on Thursday night. - Casey QUIETER BUT GOOD RESULTS AFTER the hustle and bustle of the Wallangarra Open, things this past week were a little more subdued on the greens and fairways but there was nothing wrong with the standard of competition in the single stableford on Saturday. John Green showed he is in excellent form carding 42 points a couple ahead of Tony Murphy (40) and Kevin Williams who grabbed third spot. Alan Lutter was certainly on the money, claiming the pin shot at three. Tony Murphy could not be beaten at nine and Simon Blair held the approach shot on the 14th. Kevin Williams grabbed the jackpot with a chip in birdie on the eighth. Another month has come and gone somehow and players at Wallangarra will be lining up for the March Monthly Medal on Saturday. DOWN TO BUSINESS IT WAS down to business at the Inglewood Sporting Shooters range last weekend as they held their monthly two-day pistol event and even added an impromptu down-the-line clay target match. The winner of the 25 metres Standard Pistol Shoot held on Saturday was Wayne Duffy who outscored Tom Donald and Paige Donald. Tom exacted some revenge on Sunday by winner the Action Pistol challenge. Filling the placings were Peter Jones and Peter Russell. Tom Donald wrapped up a successful weekend by taking out the Down the Line Clays event. Place getters were Michael Kanik and Steve Bevan. This Sunday the first for the month, the club has scheduled Clay target competition and pistol if there are enough takers. The Cowboys will be looking for another big season from their biggest gun - JT. who also finished with the Best Gross. The Rundowns went to Angelo Doorley and Ray Thorn. Ray Thorn also picked up the best pin shot on the third and Dick Hilton nailed the Pro Pin. Angelo Maugeri and Marg Locke were the lucky recipients of meat trays. Reminder to all Sporters and Golfers that there is no Sporters competition this Sunday due to The Apple and Grape festivities however there are plenty of golfing events throughout the week to keep the most avid golfer off the streets. Sporters of course returns at the normal tee off time of 8am - 8.30am the following weekend. FEELING THE HEAT CROQUET players like all who participate in outdoor sports have been feeling the effects of the recent extreme heat and will relish the return of some cooler conditions. The conditions did little to deter association croquet players however there were one or two absentees. Pat Schnoor is out of action for a few weeks but on the flip side Carol Verney is back in the thick of the action. We are hoping for cooler weather next week. Val Shepherd and Joy Newman earned themselves an early mark when they comfortably won their game against Carol Verwey and Effey Russell 26-14. In the other games, Jenny Tunbridge scored 26 hoops to Heather Widderick’s 17. Margaret Dickenson outscored the pairing of Andrea Denkewitz 25-19. Val Shepherd and Joy Newman had an early day when they won their game against Carol Verwey and Effey Russell, 26 to 14. Numbers at golf croquet were down last week but a group of dedicated players enjoyed playing triples. In the early game, Bill Golding, Teresa Pyne and Dianne Wren finished scored a 13-10 win over Val Fancourt, Shirley Evans and Liz Ellway 10. Dianne Wren continued the good form she has shown lately and top-scored with five hoops. Bill Golding was on target, scoring a hole in one. In a short but close second game, the combination of Bill Golding, Val Fancourt, and Judy Locke proved just a little too strong for Dianne Wren Teresa Pyne and Liz Ellway. The final score 7-6. Golding continued his consistent form top scoring with four hoops. Have you ever wondered what the game of Gateball is all about? Gateball is played with wider hoops, smaller mallets and smaller balls than the normal croquet

game. It is played in teams directed by a captain and the players wear numbers according to their place in the team. Gateball is an intricate game with many twists and turns. TRIO OF A AND G EVENTS THE Stanthorpe Golf Club hosted the first of three events set down to celebrate the Apple and Grape Festival last Saturday, the inaugural Apple and Grape Festival Golf Cup. The single stroke event attracted a large field of local and visiting players. Leading the field at the end of the day’s play was Keith Jones of Yeppoon. Jones found the course and conditions to his liking, and his score of net 67 was good enough to ensure his name was the first to be engraved on the Cup. There was a traffic jam behind the leader with four players locked on 69. Bill Pyne was eventually declared the runner-up after an extensive countback. In the Ladies event, Nikki Rossow scored another win. Her score of nett 76 shows that her game is continuing to develop nicely. Madeline Jarman finished in second place with a score of nett 78. David Reeves and Kev Rowling collected prizes for their pin shots at 3/12 and 17 while Madeline Jarman held best approach for the ladies at 17. Pro-pins and birdies nest were very exclusive with David Reeves holding 5/14 and 9/18 and Dylan Barraclough collecting 1/10 and the birdies nest at seven. Allan Kerr and Margie Locke were awarded the major run down prizes for men and ladies with the run down going to scores of 71 and better. Play was sponsored by the Apple and Grape Festival committee, and president Greg Thouard was on hand to present the trophies. The Apple and Grape golfing events continue this week - on Wednesday the club hosted the A and G RSL golf day. On Friday, the Big A and G Two Ball Ambrose sponsored by Crisps Coaches begins at 9am. It is a shot gun start and is open to members and visitors. There is a time sheet at the club. A reminder that there is no club event this Saturday as members join in the 50th A and G celebrations. CHINCHILLA CONVINCING WINNERS THE winning run of the Stanthorpe Rep cricket side came to an end last weekend when they proved no match for Chinchilla in the Slade

Shield game played on Chinchilla’s home turf. There were plenty of celebrations as Chinchilla lifted the trophy for the first time in 29 years. After winning the toss, the home side looked in control at the crease and focused on a strong big score as the Stanthorpe bowling attack failed to curb the rising run rate. At the end of the Chinchilla innings, Stanthorpe were faced with the task of scoring better than the total of 245. Fresh from a good win in the Mitchell Shield, the Stanthorpe side had a strong batting line-up, but the visitors were unsettled by the loss of an early wicket and never really recovered. A strong bowling attack saw a procession of Stanthorpe wickets fall as the visiting side buckled to be all out for 120. In the end, it was a convincing win for the Chinchilla side. The focus of the Stanthorpe cricketers will return to the finals after a break for the Apple and Grape festival this weekend. VALLEYS IN; WANDERERS OUT RSL continued their dominant run this season with another top performance when they met Valleys last weekend. The Valleys batsmen had no answers against the strong RSL bowling line-up that has dominated sides all season and found themselves all out for only 163. RSL Bowlers Ross Lupton, Sam Dowie and Luke Brady claimed three scalps apiece. Col Harris top- scored for Valleys with 51 as he and Steve Martin (36) tried desperately to get their side out of trouble. RSL lost just two wickets as they chased down the required total with little trouble. Sam Dowie followed up his solid bowling performance with another good display with the bat - the RSL captain top-scored remaining 56 not out at the end of the innings. A win FOR Valleys would have seen them straight into the knock out semi-final, but they were forced to rely on results from the Tenterfield Wanderers game. A win over Tenterfield and a bonus point was required by the Wanderers side if they were to progress to the knock out semi. After winning the toss at Sheahan Oval, Wanderers sent their opponents in, hoping for some early luck with the ball. One of Tenterfield’s most experienced players Alan Donges went on to score 60 runs after the Wanderers fielders let their bowlers down grassing three chances to dismiss him. In the end, Wanderers found themselves chasing a gettable total of 173. The equation - 174 in 30 overs or less equals a place in the semi-final and Jamie Carnell did his best to get his side over the line. Carnell showed all his class and experience, scoring an unbeaten 105 but eventually ran out of partners and as wickets tumbled. Wanderers were left frustratingly close to the total as Carnell was left stranded with the score on 171 and the final three wickets fell without adding to the total in just the 27th over. The result means season 2016 over for Wanderers while Valleys live to fight another day. They face perennial grand finalists Souths in the knock out semi on March.

Maryvale’s leading wicket-taker David Walker cut a swathe through the opposition top-order, taking five of the first six wickets with the new ball. Andy Ryan took a great reflex catch at first slip when the ball deflected off the keeper’s gloves to get the key wicket of Paul Cantwell. Ryan Collins 25 and Col O’Brien 22 not out top-scored for Wheatvale. Maryvale’s remaining bowling attack backed up Walter’s good work early. Josh Ryan finished with 1/8 from his six overs and Scott McLennan bowled well taking 1/4 as Wheatvale were dismissed for 90 runs in a little over 31 overs. Wheatvale will play Allora Rascals this weekend at Slade in the preliminary final to determine which team Maryvale meet in the grand final on 11 March. COLTS INTO RESERVE GRADE GF IN THE Warwick Reserve grade finals, the Warwick Hotel Colts booked their spot in the grand final with a 14-run win over Sovereign Animals in a close game. Colts set their opponents a moderate target of 117 runs. Five of their players reached double figures through the innings which saw wickets fall steadily. Best of the bowling at-

tack was Glen Doyle who took four wickets for 20 runs from his six-over spell. In reply, Sovereign’s opener Cahal Dahl had his side on track, scoring 32 and found good support from Josh Klein and Anthony Nero. The Colts bowling attack was able to contain their opponents and Sovereign Animals were all out for 102, just a handful of runs short of the total in the 23rd over. Cam Peterson bowled well for Colts, taking 3/23. Colts will now have to wait for the result of this weekend’s game between Sovereign Animals and Inglewood to see which other team progress to the grand final. LAST CHANCE FOR RASCALS AND WHEATVALE IT WILL be season over for either Wheatvale or Allora Rascals this weekend when they clash in the Preliminary final of the Warwick Cricket competition. Rascals last weekend defeated Allora in the knock out semi after staring down the barrel of defeat at 9/64. A last wicket partnership of 73 between Nick Vanderpoel, not out 35, and Matt Christensen dragged the total to a defendable 137. Allora bowler Stew Henderson took three wickets in a good performance with the ball. In reply Allora were dismissed for 116. Opener Aaron Vietheer did his best to get his side into a winning position, scoring 44 runs in their total. Stewie Hendersen took three wickets for Allora. Rascals Jamie Holmes caused his opponents all sorts of problems with his medium-pace deliveries and finished with 4/41 from his 10 overs. Jake Christensen also bowled well taking 3/29 from his 10-over spell. In a remarkable game, Rascals won by 21 runs and will now play Wheatvale next Sunday in the preliminary final. BOXERS BOUND FOR STATE TITLES THIS weekend two boxers from the Rose City Boxing club travel to Brisbane to compete in the Junior and Youth trials for the Queensland State Titles which will be held at the Acacia Ridge Hotel. Jackson McMahon will fight in the 75kg division and Lachlan Roche in the 63kg division. Damian Lawler of the Rose City Club expects both of his charges to do well in the tough competition. The Queensland State Titles are a prelude to the Australian Titles which will be held on the Gold Coast in May. The two boxers will attend the weigh-ins on Friday from 8am - 10am with the bouts to commence at 8am on Saturday and Sunday.

WARWICK EAST BOWLS ON FRIDAY there was the initial twilight barefoot bowls, with 12 bowlers enjoying a game. This coming Friday club will be holding barefoot bowls again, this time in conjunction with a sausage sizzle. Play will start at 6pm, with names in by 5.30pm. Valleys will be looking for a big showing from experienced players like Anthony Marino pictured taking a catch in a recent game when they meet Souths in the preliminary final. COWBOYS DOMINATE IN TRIALS A YOUNG Killarney side will be better for the run against the Warwick Cowboys A grade side after last weekend’s annual trial game played for the Xylan Smith Memorial shield. The Cutters found themselves outclassed against the more experienced Warwick side and the scoreboard reflected that at the end of the game (48-0). The game provided the Galloway brothers Dylan (Cowboys) and Dion (Killarney) a rare opportunity to take to the footy field together albeit for opposing teams. The younger of the two brothers, Dion returns to the Cowboys this season fresh from several seasons playing Q Cup for Norths Devils. It was his first game since a serious health scare several weeks ago. Galloway has bounced back to full fitness after a brush with meningococcal disease. With the opening of the TRL season only weeks away, the Cowboys are looking good under the guidance of new coach Craig Mullaly who has taken the reins after the retirement of captain coach Matt Gainey. Gainey has recently been announced as coach of the Border Bushrangers rep side.

The Cowboys Reserve Grade will be coached in 2016 by Tim Doyle and in their trial game last weekend against Inglewood (32-0). Matthew Grew coaches the under 18 side which last weekend had a dominant win 50-6 win in a trial game against the newly formed Border Bushrangers Under18s side. The cowboys look to have good depth this season and are hoping they can secure a finals berth in 2016 after finishing just short in 2015. The Cowboys won the 2015 TRL Club Championship. The BRL season is set down to kick off towards the end of March. MARYVALE GRANDINFAL BOUND AFTER their shock loss last weekend, Maryvale Condamine bounced back with a dominant win over Wheatvale, booking themselves the first spot in the 2016 Warwick grand final. Maryvale showed plenty of class in their performance against Wheatvale. They took first use of the Slade Park wicket and put together a total of 8/209. Jordan Siebenhausen top-scored for Maryvale with 45 while the consistent Jack Breen took 2/39 from his 10 overs to head the bowling figures. One of the highlights for Wheatvale was
