Law says keep your distance By MONIQUE KUZEFF NEW cycling laws have been introduced in New South Wales this week, requiring drivers to leave a one-metre gap when passing a cyclist in speed zones of 60km/h or less, and 1.5 metres in higher speed zones. The new law was implemented to ’reduce’ the vulnerability of cyclists on roads and increase their safety. Drivers who break this law will face a $319 fine and a penalty of two demerit points. The law also encompasses new fines for cyclists, which have risen up to about 500 per cent from previous fines of $71. These include a $106 fine for not having a bell or warning device and a $319 fine for not wearing a helmet. Bended Elbow cyclist Paul Ingwersen said it was important that people give enough space when overtaking cyclists. “Most drivers do give space when overtaking, but there is a minority that
don’t and it’s quite dangerous, Mr Ingwersen said. “The minority are the ones that should be picked up for that, and hopefully other people will understand that they need to be more aware of cyclists. Concerns about headon collisions were raised prior to the new law. While an evaluation of this concern is pending, there have not been reports of increased collision due to cars overtaking, according to Queensland’s Transport and Main Roads. Drivers are able to cross centre dividing lines, continuous lane-dividing lines and can also drive on painted islands and dividing strips to overtake cyclists when it is safe to do so. “It’s like anything on the road, you’ve got to make a judgement and wait until you can see enough ahead before passing, Mr Ingweresen said. “Sometimes, you have to wait a couple more seconds but it’s not going to take much out of your day. According to Mr In-
gwersen, some of the new fines for cyclists are a bit punitive in nature. “Most cyclists wear helmets but the new fines for not wearing a helmet could really hurt young people who are just rolling around in the park. “It doesn’t do much to encourage cycling at all, he said. Although displeased about the fine for not wearing a helmet, Mr Ingwersen encouraged people riding on the roads to wear a helmet. “It’s important that bike riders are aware of obeying road rules, “It’s all a part of the process of people learning to share the road. It’s good that these issues are being talked about and it’s a simple message and a few seconds here and there that doesn’t ruin your day. Recently, ACT and South Australia enforced similar measures, and last year Tasmania amended its road rules to enable safer passing of cyclists.

Taking bullies by the horns By MONIQUE KUZEFF THE initiation of a new anti-bullying campaign led by Border youth means that young people can stand up to bullying, along with the support from a partnership formed between headspace Albury Wodonga, AlburyCity and Wodonga Council. The campaign aims to inspire and encourage the community to take preventive action against bullying. With a focus on young people aged between nine and 25, the campaign also extends to the wider community. Seniors make it happen By MONIQUE KUZEFF
The Wodonga West Children Centre's first slab of concrete was poured last week. 150896
Centre set for support By MONIQUE KUZEFF THE first slab of concrete was poured last week in the construction of a new children’s centre at Wodonga West Primary School. The State Government has contributed more than $3 million towards the $4.5 million development, which is expected to be completed by November. The one-stop-shop will provide opportunities for families to engage with a range of allied health services and will include an early learning centre with a pre-school for three and fouryear-olds. It will also provide a new office and administration area, staff room, canteen, toilets, a large outdoor area and about 12 new classroom spaces to cater for children up to 12 years old.
Wodonga West Primary School principal Jocelyn Owen said it is a one-off chance for the town to have a pre-school on-site that is run by a school. “It will pretty much be a one-stop-shop for our community and is an umbrella which will incorporate Wodonga West Primary School, a before-andafter school care program and a pre-school,” Ms Owen said. “Allied health services will utilise the space, too, including maternal and child health.” The new development will also provide space for other health services including speech pathology, child psychologists, paediatric services, hearing and site services and disability services. Ms Owen said research has shown that building positive re-
lationships and engaging with these types of services at an early age is important. “Along with new employees, our staff will be working at the children’s centre so there will be great synergy and connections that will be made with families and kids - essentially we will be cross-pollinating. “We are taking on a birth to 12 years old approach and our staff will be participating in lots of professional development around our new philosophy. “We will get to know the children before they hit that primary level.” Wodonga West Children’s Centre philosophy is to develop connection and belonging, trust and respect and also to develop a sense of personal competence in young children.
THE revamped Senior Citizens’ Club in Wodonga was officially opened on Wednesday after renovations to the building’s toilets were carried out over the new year holidays. The building, which was established in 1976, was pampered with full renovations of the toilet facilities making it more modern, practical, and spacious for wheelchair access. The $44,000 project was made possible with joint funding of $18,000 from the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services, $14,000 from the Wodonga Senior Citizens’ Club and $12,000 from Wodonga Council. The building is used weekly by the Senior Citizens’ Club for activities that are available for everyone in the community. These activities include tai chi, bingo, cards, ballet, strength training and dancing lessons. Wodonga Mayor Anna Speedie opened the renovated toilets with a short appreciation speech and ribbon cutting. Ms Speedie said the renovations were important and necessary for the club and that they would not have been achieved without the support and contributions from the community working with the State Government and council. “These things don’t happen without the lovely relationships that have gathered here today and the community groups like the Senior Citizens’ Club,” Ms Speedie said. “The contribution of $14,000 from the Senior Citizens’ Club is an amazing effort and I thank them for helping to make this renovation a reality. “It’s the wonderful community clubs that make the fabric of our society much nicer and makes me proud to live in this city.” Senior Citizens’ Club president Charlie Caldwell said he was excited to see the new facilities completed. “These renovations have been something we’ve all been looking forward to for a long time,” Mr Caldwell said. “And it’s vital that we had the understanding from the State Government and the council that the renovations of these facilities were necessary.” Mr Caldwell said the Seniors Citizens’ Club

Up here for thinking Jumping for a THE SS&A Ovens and Murray Football Netball League has taken then next step towards protecting its players against concussion, by taking on board the HeadSmart concussion program. The program aims to link the gaps between scientific concussion research and concussion practices, using numerous procedures understood and undertaken by players and medical experts. League general manager Aaron McGlynn said it was an important step for the league which would give a clearer indication of players having being concussed or who have suffered a head injury. “The program will enable us to eliminate those grey areas of a less subjective nature and so we felt it was important and wanted to take it a step further,” Mr McGlynn said. “We want to make sure our players have the best ability to recover from a concussion or head trauma and return to play or to work. “It’s about being conscious of our players’ safety, which is first and foremost a priority.” The program has been successfully managed at top levels of sports including rugby union, horse racing and soccer. Mr McGlynn said concussion was something the league targeted and the HeadSmart program seemed suited to the league’s needs and they will conduct testing of around 750 footballers this week. “When you look at some of the incidents in the AFL at the moment, the obvious side effects of concussion can rule

Program founder Dr Ryan Kohler said the guidelines on concussion in sport needed to be more accessible and easily understood by parents, coaches, teachers, and athletes. “We identified some time ago a serious gap in the management of concussion and head trauma injuries,” Dr Kohler said. “There seemed to be con-
flicting information everywhere we looked.” Healthfocus physiotherapy director Michael Bowler said a combination of online recognition, cognitive information and reaction measures and a physical component with balance testing were used as a part of the program. “The system works by obtaining information we can use down the track and the medical staff in these clubs will be trained on how to recognise concussion injuries,” Mr Bowler said. “If we don’t have a baseline test then we’ve really got nothing to go on beforehand.”
HEADS were raised on Saturday when 13 jumpers, including Wodonga Mayor Anna Speedie, leapt out of an aeroplane to help raise awareness of ovarian cancer. About $3000 was accumulated as a result of the jumps and all proceeds will go towards Kelsey Watts Memorial Research Trust, which will pay for the cancer trial for local women. Border Ovarian Cancer Awareness Group President Heather Watts said the group had previously donated about $108,000 to go towards ovarian cancer research and will continue to raise awareness and proceeds to help with further research. “Ovarian cancer is undetectable and is an illness that need attention,” Ms Watts said. “We have begun to focus on our next event, which is horse racing and will be in October.” Ms Watts said after Saturday the group have decided that they will definitely be doing the jump again next year. “We all loved watching the jumpers, it was amazing and everyone had a ball. “I was absolutely terrified when I put my foot outside the plane, and so was Anna who was quite calm about it until she did the same.

Heather Watts and Wodonga Mayor Anna Speedie dared the jump to raise awareness. 150915 “When you’re on your way down, not too far off the ground and everyone is cheering, it’s a great feeling. “Now that I know what to expect though, I’d probably do it again.” Ms Watts said the Harley bike riding in the morning went also very well.

Through wind and sun, Dave’s in awe By MONIQUE KUZEFF “A TRUE potential is not limited by a disability or any other kind of obstacle we might believe could hold us back.” This is what Dave Jacka, the first quadriplegic to fly solo around Australia said just before embarking on a three-month journey tackling the Murray River from Lake Hume, NSW to Goolwa, SA. At age 19, Mr Jacka suffered a motorbike accident that left him in a state of quadriplegia. Today, only 6 per cent of his motor functions are retained, with the inability to move anything from his armpits down. Mr Jacka took to the challenge of paddling the 2225km length of the Murray River as another personal test to see where his limits lay, physically and mentally. He told News Weekly he also aimed to raise awareness of the potential that people with disabilities have and to encourage people to “just give things a go”. “I want to show that we have the ability to unlock our own inner spirits if only we get out and give things a go and be open to where the journey takes you,” Mr Jacka said. Being a quadriplegic, Mr Jacka said he would be faced with quite difficult challenges but was willing to face and overcome them.
Dave Jacka took off on his Paddle Wheel Murray River Expedition on Monday. 150928 Picture: CONTRIBUTED “It will probably be one of the toughest challenges. Certainly a mental challenge and a massive physical challenge as I have limited arm function and no finger function at all. “The weather will also pose a challenge with the extreme cold and hot as I’m unable to regulate my body temperature, and if it gets very windy my limited strength will make it very hard
for me to paddle against that.” Over the years, Mr Jacka said he has spent some time holidaying on the Murray River and often saw people paddling down. “It’s a beautiful area and I thought it would be a fantastic opportunity to experience the nature, the people and just a beautiful part of the world, “The landscape is always changing, and I’ve always liked
kayaking down the river.” Mr Jacka said he looked forward to his new adventure and had many people to thank for supporting him through the expedition. “It’s a real team effort and it’s made a reality because of the support of volunteers behind me. “It’s quite life changing when you paddle down the Murray.”
Taking bullies by the horns From page 1 Wodonga Council Youth Services team leader Rachel Habgood said a cross-Border conversation had found that bullying and mental health were two top issues affecting young people across the Border. “A lot of young people report experiences of bullying and have seen bullying,” Ms Habgood said. “We want bystanders to stand up and protect and support the bully and of course the person who is experiencing the bullying.” Ms Habgood said one-off approaches that address bullying, often through schools and sporting clubs events, don’t work as well as engaging people on a more intimate level. “When young people are the ones saying: hey, this is enough, we don’t want to be seeing this in our society - I think it is a much more powerful thing.“ “We feel it is really important for young people to form the campaign themselves and tell us what they need. “It will ensure that we have a campaign that works for Albury and Wodonga and have young people here who want to buy into it.” The first stage of the anti-bullying campaign is a forum that will be held on 7 April, which will ask young people to develop concepts
and approaches to tackling bullying and to form an antibullying action group. headspace Youth Reference Group Member Sarah Negrin said the new campaign would have a positive impact by starting conversation between young people and adults about bullying. “The forum will be coming together of ideas, and through the youth attending from schools around the Border (the anti-bullying action group) will get information to build the campaign from there on. “It’s a good thing the youth are leading it because it’s inspiring to see the ones who are asking about it are the people making the change.” Ms Negrin said the campaign would address three key issues: prevention, intervention and response. “We aim to address these different areas to encourage people to be up-standers and not bystanders,” she said. “Once the issue has been identified, there needs to be some kind of intervention and support for both the bully and the one being bullied.” Local young person Luke Bottoms said: “It’s a refreshing change to see this action coming from the youth, because it really reflects how we are feeling and makes it easier for those young people to understand.” ADVERTISEMENT

THIRTY years in the running, Albury Wodonga Doll, Bear and Hobby Show (DBHS) continues to give generously to worthy not-for-profit organisations across the Border. The DBHS recently presented Wodonga Dog Rescue and Border Cystic Fibrosis each with a generous $1000 cheque to assist their work. On the last weekend in November each year, the DBHS is run over two days at the Mirambeena Community Centre in Lavington, where proceeds are donated to worthy organisations. Wodonga Dog Rescue president Jim Toole was thankful for the money and said it would help with operational costs including vet fees and bedding. “There are ongoing costs such as vet fees, dog food and bedding and most of that comes through donations like this, which is fantastic, Mr Toole said. “Without support like this, it just wouldn’t happen, and we can’t thank them enough. Border Cystic Fibrosis president Robyn Blackley said the money would be extremely beneficial in helping the organisation set up a new physio program. “We’ve started a physio program with Focus physio and we are setting up a space where they can offer that service to people with cystic fibrosis (cf), Ms Blackley said. “Often when those with cf get chest infections, they have to go to Melbourne for two weeks and this puts a huge burden on families, so the money is going to be a huge help and we are very excited about getting this program up and running. DBHS founder Margaret Grigsby told News Weekly she had selected these two organisations based on the

Liquor store solution A DECISION to go ahead with the lease of the empty, former library site in Beechworth for a liquor store, was made last week to complement the pop-up supermarket in Harper Avenue. Indigo Shire Mayor James Trenery said the fire that destroyed Beechworth’s only supermarket in January was devastating, but is now pleased with the temporary supermarket. “Despite looking for alternative sites, it wasn’t until a local business owner offered his premises for a temporary supermarket that the community had a solution to this problem,” Cr Trenery said. “Mick and Jo Westra have moved their Plumbing Plus business from Harper Avenue to the former Foodworks site opposite the Beechworth Primary School and Ritchies IGA staff are already in the Harper Street premises fitting it out for the pop-up supermarket. “Remember, this is unprecedented. We have not had a situation before where the only supermarket in Beechworth has burnt down. This is a temporary situation until the new supermarket is built. “The liquor store was an integral

part of the supermarket business before the fire and this decision tonight completes the arrangements for the temporary project.” Cr Trenery said he was very pleased Council had come to an agreement with Ritchies to seal car parking space near the temporary supermarket site. “The sealing of the car park near 3 Harper Avenue involves both sides of the road - one side services the swimming pool which the community uses regularly in the summer. This is a great plus for pool users. Council and Ritchies are going halves in this cost - up to about $8000 each. “And Council’s share will come from the rent we get from the former library, not from ratepayers. This is a win/win situation for everyone.” Cr Trenery said Council was happy to see the final clean-up of the inside of the burnt out supermarket in Loch Street was now taking place. “Work began last Friday to clear the remaining debris inside the supermarket and it should be all done in 4 to 5 weeks,” he said.

Secure and flexible option By MONIQUE KUZEFF RENTING during retirement comes with the advantages of a range of benefits, freedom, flexibility and security, and that is exactly what Mardross Gardens in North Albury offers. Mardross Gardens is the definition of a convenient and cost-effective environment with no upfront fees and no exit fees, just the benefits that come with living independently in the hub of a retiree community. Options for in-home help, with nurses and cleaners can be arranged if
required. Situated on the north side of the Murray River, water activities including fishing are options during the warmer months and gardens and parkland are only within a short distance away. Mardross Gardens resident Kevin Bailey came all the way from Heathcote in central Victoria, and has been living on site for almost four months now. Mr Bailey, who is in a wheelchair, said he chose Mardross Gardens simply because of the pricing, practicality
and mobility which made it easy for him to get around. “It’s cost-effective, and the unit and village provide everything you need, Mr Bailey. “Not only am I financially independent, but there is also a great diverse group of people to mingle with. “It’s situated right in the centre of wherever you want to be. It just seems to tick all the boxes for me. Mardross Gardens provides an onsite manager, and gates are locked and secured at night with resident access

via security code when they are closed for the convenience of the residents. Cooking and gardening are taken care of by staff, and the retirement environment is never short of fun activities, which include cards, trivia, bingo, happy hour, canasta, movies, live music, board games. There is also a library that is restocked every month, boasting a variety of books and Broadband for Seniors internet access. Mr Bailey said the central location of the Mardross Gardens made it easy to get to the doctors, dentist, supermar-
ket, shops and other services. “I like the fact of there being a public bus stop only a few 100 metres away, “Lavington Square is only two blocks away and access to the sport club facilities such as bowling greens is fantastic. Private gardens surround the lowmaintenance units which incorporate a private court yard, reverse cycle airconditioning, ceiling fans, and an ensuite with support rails for both safety and convenience.

Live it up at Riverwood village WHETHER you are one of Riverwood’s independent unit owners or are living under the care of Allity Aged Care Hostel, the Riverwood Retirement Village caters it’s comprehensive activities program to all of it’s residents. With a diverse selection of activities to choose from on a weekly, monthly and annual basis, you won’t have time to ever feel lonely, left-out or bored. Riverwood ensures it’s residents don’t miss out on any annual celebrations including Melbourne Cup, Anzac Day, and Australia Day just to name a few. Staff organise activities for such events, providing residents with the opportunity to dress up, get together and celebrate the illustrious days. For those who appreciate a great meal, a weekly Sunday roast is served in the Riverwood community centre for residents to get out and join in a social lunch with others. A different roast is
selected each week including pork, beef, lamb and chicken. Sport and exercise lovers won’t have to travel far. Hostel residents play box bowls, golf and have swimming exercise classes twice a week as well as normal exercise classes, and the Village residents can occupy themselves with carpet bowls, swimming and lawn bowls, which are some of the active options offered throughout the week. Bowls tournaments are also organised during the year, which sees other bowl enthusiasts outside of the village come along to challenge Riverwood’s champions. On Wednesdays, residents have the opportunity to stock up on good healthy food with a weekly visit from Flippin Fresh Seafood. This evening brings to life happy hour, another excuse for a social get together held in the community centre! Wednesdays and Fridays there are
church services for the Uniting, Catholic and Anglican residents, which is then followed in the afternoon by Kelly pool and a happy hour meat raffle. Trivia, bingo, cards, word games, craft, footy tipping, library and movie sessions are just a few more of what’s offered weekly at Riverwood Retirement Village. But sometimes it is good to just get away and see new places or explore historic towns. That’s why Riverwood runs bus trips to towns including Beechworth, Yackandandah, Bright and Howlong where residents can experience the variety of restaurants or relax in a public garden with a book. Riverwood caters for group and individual socials needs and with such diverse services, activities, and friendly, caring staff who are on call 24/7, the only thing Riverwood residents need to do - is get out and ‘live a little’!
Riverwood Retirement Living Riverwood offers an atmosphere of community and family. Residents can relax and enjoy enclosed, peaceful gardens or participate in the activity programs which include bowls, swimming, and gardening. Family members and friends are always welcome, and are an integral part of the warm community feel of Riverwood. Riverwood features: 4 4 4 4 4 4

Albury’s favourite community! Our residents enjoy ...
Brenda and Mavis have known each other for many years but rekindled their friendship at Murray Gardens. For them, the village’s central location is especially convenient.
• Being close to shops, medical services, transport and amenities • Regular, organised events and activities • Fabulous facilities and award winning gardens • Convenient and central East Albury location • Relaxing, maintenance-free lifestyle • Emergency 24/7 call system for added peace of mind • Serviced apartments offering assistance with daily household chores such as cooking, cleaning and linen laundry.
“I find the life here so easy! You can get to all the shops and the supermarket is in walking distance. There’s also a bus which stops at the gate and takes you to Albury, and brings you back of course, which I find very handy because I don’t drive.” Brenda Cronin, resident since 2014 “I came from the South Coast to Albury. My children live here, and when I lost my husband they said ‘you can’t stay here on your own’ so they brought me over. I don’t drive and my son looked at all the villages in Albury and ended up with Murray Gardens because he liked the villa that I’m in and that the atmosphere was friendly. I really recommend it.” Mavis Barber, resident since 2015

Get some aids for your ears AMPLIFY Hearing and Diagnostics is owned by locals and aims to provide a complete service for adults with hearing concerns. “We pride ourselves on being a comprehensive diagnostic hearing aid and audiology clinic that provides the best service and best fittings possible, taking into consideration individual client’s needs, lifestyles and budgets,” says Emma, local owner and qualified audiometrist. “Buying a hearing aid can be a daunting prospect, so it is important to understand your rights as a consumer. Here are a few things to consider before making the decision to purchase a hearing aid.” Assessment - Have you had a full hearing assessment to rule out any medical conditions that may be impacting on your hearing? Pension status - If you are an eligible Pensioner or Veteran, you are entitled to government subsidies, make sure these are outlined for you. Risk free trial - Make sure you get a trial period (most people find a few weeks is adequate) which allows you to return the hearing aids if you are not 100 per cent happy with them, even if you are on a pension. Choice- Some retail outlets prefer to fit one brand of hearing aid. Obtaining advice from an independent clinic gives you the freedom to choose the best fit for you. Comfort - Are you comfortable with your clinician? Hearing aid fittings can take some time to get completely right, so you may be seeing your clinician quite a few times. Ask questions - If you are uncertain ask. Your clinician should be able to answer all your hearing and hearing aid questions, and if not they should be able to source the answer for you in a timely manner.

Involve your friends/family - Don’t be afraid to involve those around you in the process. It can be really helpful to have someone attend appointments with you. Get a second opinion - If you are concerned or uncomfortable about any of the information you have received or a quote you have been given, get a second opinion. To help celebrate NSW Seniors week, Amplify Hearing and Diagnostics are currently offering a take home, hearing aid trial that could save you up to $500. (conditions apply). THEY say the early bird catches the worm, and when it comes to thinking about retirement living, you can’t go wrong by getting a head start. Megan from Generations Aged Care Advice met with a local couple who share their story. For Bob and Molly Cox, advanced planning has made their shift into retirement living an easy and enjoyable time of life. When their Allan’s Flat property became too much work, with Bob spending up to 12 hours a week mowing, he said, “Molly and I started to look around, and we realised that a lot of people don’t move at latter stages of life because they’re too scared. They become caught up in their homes and the decision to leave home becomes increasingly more difficult the longer they leave it”.
They also felt they wanted to be independent and didn’t want their children looking after them if they ever got sick or frail. Since leaving their Allan’s Flat home, they have not looked back. With a Men’s Shed, sewing groups, and regular barbecues for residents to catch up, Westmont Villas is a place they happily call home. “I have the greatest respect for this place,” Bob said. “It is absolutely what we wanted and exactly as we expected.” Being proactive and thinking about their longer term accommodation needs is helping the Cox family make the most of their retirement living. They encourage others to think about their options early, to enjoy its benefits for longer. Megan was impressed with Bob and Molly’s planning as
they clearly demonstrated their need to be in charge of their future living arrangements. “Decisions made after careful consideration of your future, before you get too old, helps in making your longer term living arrangements what you desire”. Active lifestyle, unique model LIFESTYLE community developer, Active Lifestyle Estates, has commenced final preparations on Albury’s newest state-of-the-art community centre, ready for the open day on Saturday 30 April. The brand new centre, which arrived on site earlier this month, is currently being fitted out with popular features and amenities and will be a great addition to the existing community facilities which include a vegetable garden, men’s shed and pool. Current residents from Active Lifestyle Estates Albury were on hand to help accept delivery and inspect their new community centre which will significantly transform the lifestyle estate. There was a buzz of excitement as they looked forward to using their new space by late April, additionally, they will enjoy the opportunity to share the centre with new residents and visitors. The centre will provide all of the social activities for the Active Lifestyle Estates Albury residents as well as accommodate a variety of local meetings, events and social clubs for the community. The centre has a commercial kitchen with large dining area, lounge with gas fire, reading library and computer room for IT lessons, consult room for visiting medical practitioners and a large alfresco deck with a barbecue that overlooks the pool. Owner and operator of Active Lifestyle Estates, Ingenia Communities, chief operating officer Nikki Fisher said the lifestyle community in the New South Wales regional city of Albury came at a time when many Australian seniors are grappling with the issue of housing affordability, as the majority of their wealth is tied up in their family home. “Our model is unique in that buyers purchase a new, architecturally designed manufactured home and lease, rather than own, the land which elimi-
nates the need to pay stamp duty. “This ensures a much more affordable entry price point and means new residents are often able to free up a substantial amount of equity raised in the sale of their previous home,” Ms Fisher said. There are a variety of brand new home designs that will exceed the expectations of what locals currently have on offer. New homes are available from $195,000 for
one bedroom, or three-bedroom floor plans from $240,000. Megan Collins is available to conduct open homes every Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday 11am to noon or by appointment on 0459 955 1220459 955 122. Active Lifestyle Estates Albury Open Day What: Active Lifestyle Estates Albury Open Day

Oven back to showroom condition THE Ovenu service is a full cleaning and detailing service. A pre-clean inspection is completed initially, and then the power to the oven is switched off. Many manufacturers will void the warranty if the oven is worked on while live and for good reason. Last year, on one occasion when the back panel of a fairly new oven was removed by the Ovenu technician, it was discovered that the element had
corroded, through the use of caustic sprays by the previous home owner and would have been “live”, a very dangerous situation had the power not been switched off. The door, the fan, the light globe, the racks and panels are removed and most items go into the design registered heated tank which is fitted into the van. The interior of the oven is then cleaned and polished to remove all traces of the carbon and fat which has been sucked
behind the panels by the fan. When every speck of grease has been removed, the oven is re-assembled, and our own polish applied to seal the surface and make it easier for the client to keep the interior clean with bicarbonate of soda and vinegar. Those annoying streaks that get between the glass on the oven door are removed. All products are non-caustic and safe for the environment. The price can vary depending on the

Senator the Hon Michaelia Cash MINISTER FOR EMPLOYMENT MINISTER FOR WOMEN MINISTER ASSISTING THE PRIME MINISTER FOR THE PUBLIC SERVICE SENATOR FOR WESTERN AUSTRALIA
International Women’s Day 2016 As Australians we believe in the right to a fair go. We also believe that women and men are equal. However, it is a fact that when you unpack the statement: “women and men are equal - we all know, that there is still much work to be done. As a woman, as a policy maker, as an Aunt to my 16 year old niece, Aleisha, the society and world that I want to live in and even more so I want Aleisha to live in, is one that when we say “women and men are equal – they are. Women should be able to make the choices in life that they want to make, not that they have to make, because of structural, cultural or institutional, barriers that still exist.
Senator the Hon Michaelia Cash Senator the Hon Michaelia Cash is the as Minister for Employment, Minister for Women and Minister Assisting the Prime Minister. Prior to entering Parliament, Michaelia was a senior lawyer with a national law irm Freehills in their Perth oice. Senator Cash holds an Honours Degree in Law from the University of London. She also holds a Bachelor of Arts (Social Science) from Curtin University in Perth, graduating with a triple major in public relations, politics and journalism. In addition, she holds a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice from the University of Western Australia. Senator Cash has also been actively involved in several Senate committees including as the Deputy Chairman of the Joint Statutory: Australian Commission for Law Enforcement Integrity. Senator Cash is married to Richard Price, a barrister. She is the daughter of former Minister in the Western Australian Government and former President of the Legislative Council, the Hon George Cash AM.
During her life there will be various decision points that she will encounter, in which she will see whether or not things are truly equal. Gender equality is not a women’s issue, it is an economic and social priority for Australia. FIVE local women make up an integral part of the dynamic team at NewsWeekly offering a diverse set of skills to advertisers and community groups throughout Albury and Wodonga regions. Initiated by a group of businesspeople seven years ago, the aim of NewsWeekly was to provide a free alternative at a time when paid circulations were declining. The NewsWeekly provides truly local news and information without syndication. Today the NewsWeekly is majority owned by a family newspaper company, Star News Group, which has a history of 105 years, and the remaining shareholders are local businesspeople. The NewsWeekly can continue to grow its local content with the support of local advertisers to become the region’s premier local news provider. “The NewsWeekly, started by locals, continues to service the region as the only free weekly local newspaper, Star’s managing director Paul Thomas said. “We’d like to call on local advertisers to support the NewsWeekly more to ensure this region is well serviced by local free media. “With the NewsWeekly’s free delivery and continued web presence, local news can be consumed from a variety of sources as it break and offer advertisers an excellent way to reach local readers. “As paid circulations continue to decline with more syndicated news and less local news, free papers are becoming even more vital to their local communities. 1218834-EG09-16

On International Women’s Day each year, women are recognised for their achievements without regard to divisions; whether national, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic or political. It was ďŹ rst celebrated in 1911 and still stands as an occasion for looking back on past struggles and accomplishments, and more importantly, for looking ahead to the untapped potential and opportunities that await future generations of women.

International Women’s Day Women make real estate gains By MONIQUE KUZEFF IT’S widely known that women are natural home-makers, so it only makes sense that it’s been proven that women prosper in the real estate industry. Carolyn Hassarati, Lorrae Kovacs and Elaine Jones make up the dynamic team of women at Hutton Real Estate and they are all passionate about their jobs. With the advantage of diverse backgrounds, they have been able to utilise their accrued skills to further develop their ability in many components of the real estate business. Mrs Hassarati has lived in the surrounding area for over 40 years and has built, bought and sold many properties. This has taught her the expectations of investors, renters and home buyers. Mrs Hassarati said that she believed women generally were better at dealing with people which, along with organisational skills, was a key quality in real estate. “Real estate is a peoples’ game. It’s about building trust with people and making them feel at ease, and I think women naturally do that, Mrs Hassarati said. “I have big responsibilities at home with my family, and having those responsibilities prepares you for this industry and gives you all those advantages. Lorrae Kovacs has lived in a variety of both regional and metropolitan areas before she

settled in Albury in 2002. With a background in the police force, she has learned very well how to deal with people and most enjoys communicating well with her clients to better understand their needs and desires to help them select their new home. “My favourite thing about my job is assessing people to find out the perfect property for their next home, Mrs Kovacs said. “I’ve always had an interest in real estate where I’ve bought and sold a lot of properties in the past and have always followed and dabbled in the market. Guernsey-born Elaine Jones moved to Australia where she bought an investment property in Albury and started at Hutton Real Estate in 2009. Mrs Jones’ role involves property management and administration tasks where she most enjoys working with a close-knit team. “I enjoy working with a
small team and I’ve learned a huge amount since I last worked in the real estate industry in Guernsey. “I’m happier in the office behind the scenes doing the administration work. Mrs Jones has provided insight into why owners appreciate her diligent approach and is thoughtful in the wide variety of tasks she performs. One of the challenges she enjoys in her real estate career is that no two days are the same. Hutton Real Estate principal Nigel Horne, who has over 20 years’ experience in real estate, said there were more women in property management than men. “Generally, property managers don’t have to work on the weekend and for women more often than not they’ve got children so they need the weekend off, Mr Horne said. “Women also tend to pay more attention to detail than men and are fantastic communicators.
AT just 23 years old, Emily Hanley has already established herself as the owner/manager of Zabuui Hairdesigners, and stands as an exemplar of a business-minded women determined to perservere through any challenge. Hanley began her hairdressing apprenticeship at Zabuui seven years ago when it was under a different management, and through the support of Zabuui’s mentors and team, her passion for the business began to grow. Ms Hanley said it was quite a lot of work to learn the operational side of the business, but the support she received helped her achieve the outome. “I had fantastic help from my family and friends that were behind me, also from other women in business pushing me to get it off the ground, Ms Hanley said. “I was determined to make it happen and had already created friendly relations with my clients and team so that was a great starting point. Ms Hanley said she had faced a few challenges since taking over Zabuui, and although some people had questioned whether she was too young to own a business, she had never doubted her ability for a minute. “I will make mistakes, and I will learn from them, and I al-

Another challenge Ms Hanley said she had dealt with was trying to leave work at work at the end of the day. “I’ve found it difficult to switch-off at the end of the day and am constantly thinking about work at home. You’ve definitely got to be passionate about your business if you want to own it. Ms Hanley said her favourite aspect about her job and business was working with her clients and team. “The team is very approach-

MP building on a rich history on the land
IN 2004, Renee Nightingale started out as a travel consultant in Wangaratta and now she is the co-owner of three helloworld travel agencies, with the other two stores located in Albury and Wodonga. As the owner and operator of three stores in three cities, Ms Nightingale stands as the perfect example of a woman who has achieved an enormous amount in the business world. Ms Nightingale, who has been a business owner for eight years now, said she had faced some challenges but none that had rocked her passion for business. “I was a travel consultant for three and a half years before I bought a business at the age of 23, so I was very young when I started out,” Ms Nightingale said. “It all happened very quickly, but I was fortunate enough to have the support that I did then and still do now. “My passion started during my student exchange to Germany when I was 15, and when I got in to the industry, I travelled a little bit more and a bit more and my love of travel grew. “All the staff at helloworld get to do some travel during the year. We encourage all of our consultants to get out and travel as much as they can- it’s a big world out there and firsthand experience is paramount to making a good travel agent.” Ms Nightingale said things started happening when she received the opportunity to manage one of the travel agency branches in Melbourne. “It was my next decision to leave from Wangaratta, but then the Albury store came up, and Albury was always where I wanted to be,” she said. Challenges are a part of owning and
AS Federal Member for Indi, Cathy McGowan stands today as a representative of the people of Indi. She believes her courage, persistence, dogged determination and deep roots into farming and the rural communities of North East Victoria was the result of the foundation laid by her family’s history. When her early family emigrated to Australia, they selected land in Mitta Mitta Valley, below Tallangatta in 1875. Her family history is rich with stories of clearing the land, dealing with floods, fires, drought and the desperate struggle to meet the conditions to purchase the land. In the early days of her career, she had many varied jobs including lobbying for the establishment of a school for the Flying Fruit Fly Circus; home and community care in Wodonga, Tallangatta, Corryong, Beechworth, Chiltern, Rutherglen, Yackandandah; palliative care in the Ovens, King and Kiewa Valleys; mobile childcare for farming and rural families. Through such work, she built wide networks and gained first-hand knowledge of the challenges of delivering service in the area. She lives by the notion that ‘one size does not fit all’ and with that in mind aims to get rural voices heard. She has enjoyed working with the Victorian Government Department of Agriculture as a Rural Affairs advisor and also travelling to Canada on a Churchill Fellowship to study rural women’s networks
“I love what I do, but if you didn’t love being a business owner, you couldn’t do it because it’s hard work.” Her favourite thing about running the business is watching her team grow as consultants, she said. “Seeing them do the training and then hearing them go out there and sell it is so rewarding to me. “There isn’t one morning I don’t wake up and not want to go to work. Over 12 years in the industry, Ms Nightingale has achieved outstanding awards including being named Number 1 National Consultant for Scenic Tours, multi-Platinum Sales Achiever, and her business was named the Number One Agency by Scenic Tours. However, there is one thing she said she knew for sure: “behind a good business owner- is a fabulous team.”
and their role in improving communication with governments. At 40, her mother passed away and this was a turning point for her, as she was elected to parliament. Eventually, she took a more active role in agricultural politics and became an inaugural member of Australian Women in Agriculture. She soon became a national president and participated at National Farmers Federation meetings before being elected to the Victorian Farmers Federation policy body. There she learnt a range of skills including working with difference, building partnerships, chairing meetings, building teams, and embracing diversity. Over the years, Cathy McGowan has established herself as a strong female representative for Indi, the electorate in which she grew up in, and has established deep roots and connections into the communities of North East Victoria.

managing any business, Ms Nightingale said. For her, being young and assumed inexperienced posed as the greatest challenge in her early career. “I walked in to this business, thinking life was going to be so glamorous from here on in, I was a business owner after all and I worked for myself. “I quickly realised that it’s hard work and long hours- a full-time gig. Ms Nightingale said the first 12 months was a big learning curve for herin a lot of good ways. “I am responsible for getting 11 women wages at the end of the week, so you have to make sure the shops are being run well and staff are happy and content in their roles. As both travel consultant and manager, she takes on the local area marketing and team management. “I’ve got to be there for the teams as well, every second of the day.

International Women’s Day
Advertising Feature
8th March 2016
‘Stand up and be counted’ INTERNATIONAL Women’s Day is an opportunity to celebrate the great contribution that women make - to community, to family, to work. Women have amazing strength, resilience, are efficient, have a great capacity to multitask, an often innate sense to nurture and a great capacity to give. Women and children are also more likely to bear the brunt of violence, sexual assault, are more financially vulnerable and butt against a glass ceiling that is cracking but yet to shatter. On International Women’s Day, I congratulate the women across our region for the work that you do - in the home, in your workplace, in our community, often done without fanfare. As the first female Federal Shadow Minister of the Liberal Party to have children as a sitting member, being a working mother with two small children was a real challenge - similar to that faced by thousands of women every day. Kitty travelled with me as a very small infant during the 2010 election campaign. I’m thankful for a patient and capable husband, who took over the reins at home, but it was always tough to be away. It’s wonderful to see a growing number of women who are juggling childrearing with parliament and the rules being flexed to cater for this. Supporting women to participate in the workforce is an economic and social priority for the government. Supporting a safer environment for women is another urgent issue that our government is attacking head-on, with a $100 million Women’s Safety Package. As former Shadow Min-
ister for Women, I expressed public concern about the sexualisation of our children and the need for tougher regulation of advertisers. We have a moral responsibility to protect children from the harm of highly sexualised images that can lead to the premature sexualisation of a child who doesn’t have the cognitive ability to actually make sense of the images. I recently called for a publicly accessible and comprehensive national register of sex offenders as part of my Community Safety Platform, as well as a national commitment to improving the transparency of information between our justice system and communities and cooperation between the federal and state governments on penalties and parole. You can sign the petition at www.sophiemirabella. com.au/petition. Other mechanisms such as a National Domestic Violence Order scheme to eliminate cross-border anomalies, adequate and flexible support for victims and witnesses of violence crime, and working with local organisations to access information and funding are essential to gaining local results from national policy. It is important to stand up and be counted. On Sunday 6 March, please join Wangaratta locals and visitors, Denise and Bruce Morcombe and Derryn Hinch at a rally in Wangaratta (starting at Wangaratta Council offices at 9am) to call for reform and a stop to violence against women and children. Our region is mourning the separate murders of a young child and mother in our own community recently. The families of these innocent people are forever changed and our voice will be loud in supporting them and calling for change. Sophie Mirabella February 2016

Sweet sounds of Denver By TANIA PHILLIPS GROWING up on New Zealand’s South Island, it’s easy to see how Bevan Gardiner would indentify with the music of the incomparable John Denver. Bevan is the voice behind the critically-acclaimed Take Me Home - The Music and Life of John Denver which returns to Albury on 12 March. Australian audiences experienced this show in 2014 when it toured regional and capital cities to public and critical acclaim. Previously Bevan Gardiner toured Australia in 2013 as a support act for legendary American country singer Charley Pride. After listening to Bevan, he was moved to say “Close your eyes and it’s just like listening to John". Take Me Home - The Music and Life of John Denver is authorised by Harold Thau, John Denver’s long-time personal manager and friend and is the only official John Denver tribute show, though to Bevan this is not about imitating Denver. For Beven, who is partially sighted and can only see people as silhouettes, this is more about bringing the music of this '70s and '80s hero without imitating him. As well as the live music there is archival film footage detailing the life and achievements of Denver until his death in an aircraft crash in Monterey Bay, California in October 1997. “We will be bringing a similar show (to last time) we had such a great
reaction last time and we have people itching to see it again,” Bevan said. “We have refined it and added a few new songs in, so it is a bit different.” Bevan works in other bands but he has now been performing this show for the past eight years, garnering a strong following for the show which allows fans to hear the music of their hero live again or for new fans to see what the fuss is all about. Bevan has always been immersed in music. He is passionate about what he does and has been a fan of the famous singer ever since he first heard a John Denver cassette tape while travelling on a family holiday. Bevan was just seven years of age, but was so inspired by the purity of John’s music that he decided there and then that he wanted to sing and play just like his idol. He has been a fan of Denver’s for more than 20 years, so to now sing his songs is a dream come true. In 2007, Bevan was invited to Aspen, Colorado to perform in the 10th Annual John Denver Tribute Week. There he met John’s mother, Irma Deutschendorf, and brother, Ron and performed with members of John’s original band. 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi (MA) Starring: A cast of unknowns LOVED by the fans, loathed by the critics, and OK by me. That’s Michael Bay in a nutshell - and he’s back on the big screen with twice the usual number of explosions, flames and bullets. The hyper-macho ‘13 Hours’ tells the tale of security contractors - OK, maybe mercenaries - who have to hold out against Islamic militants for - you guessed it - 13 hours. Sure enough, it soon becomes apparent that if you’re
running low on everything apart from very cranky insurgents then you’re probably at war in Benghazi. Set in Libya after Gaddafi, the film makes much of the shifting or non-existent loyalties of the locals and portrays well the uncertainty our “heroes” have as to who may, or may not, be backing them up. The question of the men being security rather than real soldiers is at the heart of the film: it’s hard to make a gungho American soldiers into heroes when they’re not even real American soldiers. So they’re not secret and
they’re not soldiers per se, which makes for some challenges as to the movie’s title. Still, they are all at least ex-American soldiers, and that counts for something. The action proceeds much as you’d think and, of course, in this captain’s experienced hands, it’s beautifully shot. But overall, there’s simply too much of a sense of director Bay reaching for something he can’t attain. You won’t find much nuance here but the impressive body count does make for a man movie indeed. - Jason Beck

Medical centre the lynchpin By MONIQUE KUZEFF IN THE holistic planning of Elmwood, the medical centre was a lynchpin to provide services to Elmwood and the broader community. Standard general practitioner services, mental health services, childhood immunisation, counselling service and chronic disease management are just some of the health services offered at Elmwood Medical Centre. This week we introduce the sixth part of a 12-part series explaining why Elmwood was awarded the best housing development in the state. Positioned next to both Elmwood Pharmacy and Elmwood Cafe, the medical centre is a one-stop shop encompassing a range of services to cater for patients including those who live at Elmwood. Elmwood Medical Centre Practice Manager Jane Sewell said it was a convenient clinic, particularly for residents who live nearby. “We have a pathology collections centre so patients can also have their bloods taken straight after their appointment if needed and we’ve also got a great onsite pharmacy,“ Ms Sewell said.
Elmwood Medical Centre has two nurses and a mental health nurse and five established general practitioners, both male and female, with a further two general practitioners set to arrive. “Patients can come and see their GPs, we offer nurse appointments and we also provide osteopathy and dietetics services.” With accessible parking, wheelchair access and the comfort of a modern and spacious facility, Elmwood Medical Centre has made sure to create support and comfort for its patients’ every visit. Being situated on Beechworth Road at the edge of the Elmwood estate, it really is the convenience factor that stands out to Elmwood residents. It also provides after hours assistance up to 8pm weekdays and all day Saturdays, and offers emergency appointments each day. Ms Sewell said one of the great advantages of Elmwood Medical Centre was that you “don’t have to go to three different locations to do three different things, it’s a perfect one-stop shop.”

Local Sport North Albury romps home By TANIA PHILLIPS NORTH Albury have taken the first innings points in spectacular fashion in their Cricket Albury Wodonga match against Wodonga Raiders at Bunton Park. The North Albury team scored more than 600 for the game to put the result beyond doubt. After setting their opponents 1-316 to chase, their bowlers had Raiders back in the sheds for just 190 to take the first innings points. Batting for a second time, North Albury again went on the attack and finished with 2-346 with Brendon Simmons scoring 118 while Brandon Purtell scored 110 and Daniel Athanitis capped off a big match, scoring 91 after making an unbeaten 62 in the first innings. Meanwhile, Belvoir took the points in their match against New City at Urana Road Oval. New City had batted first scoring 105, and in reply Belvoir took the first innings points with 6-158. New City scored 143 in their second innings with Belvoir making 3-97 in reply. Tallangatta were the winners in a tight one at Rowen Park against a determined East Albury. Batting first, Tallangatta had set their opponents quite a run chase making 9-357, and in reply James Weighell’s 3-52 helped them keep East Albury to 8-304. At stumps Tallangatta were batting again and finished the day with 3-129. Wodonga took the points at Billson Oval with Albury’s first innings total of 264 not proving enough for the big-hitting Wodonga boys who scored an impressive 350 with Andrew Berg scoring 83 and Beau Kennedy 80 while Kade Brown
put in a big effort to finish with figures of 5-55. And Lavington have humbled St Patricks at Lavington Sports Ground. Set a total of 9-283 to chase after the first day St Patricks crashed to be all out for 123 - 160 behind. Benjamin top-scored for St Patricks while Nathan Brown took 3-83.
