PAKO celebration

The best of the west WESTFEST is a free community arts festival set in the beautiful surrounds of West Park, which is situated on the corner of Pakington and Autumn Street, Geelong West. It brings together the people of Geelong West and beyond to profile local artists, creative industries and community groups. Following in the tradition of previous festivals, and keeping to an ethos of being local, sustainable and linked to the community, there will be something for everyone. The festival will begin with welcome to country by local Wadda Warrung woman Corinna O’Toole, and be followed by a great variety of local bands, choirs and children’s performers who will showcase their musical talents across two stages throughout the afternoon.

There will be interactive demonstrations, a large selection of come and try activities and a market filled with handmade stalls. There will also be the annual drawing and photography competition which takes place on the day, with some great prizes. A children’s area which includes many free activities, including craft and storytelling by the Geelong West library in the iconic West Park rotunda, is always a popular feature of the day. Contributing to the wonderful community atmosphere is a dining area with tables and umbrellas surrounded by food vendors including local Pako Street traders such as The French Corner Cafe, Warren and Hutch and Nordenfine Ice Cream. PAKO travels By GAIL PALMER, HELLOWORLD NEWTOWN

Wonderful Welly function on the waterfront. They treated us to a fashion show of their uniforms to celebrate 75 years of flying, great food and local wine and beers. Thankfully the next day the weather had cleared, the sun was out and the waterfront was sparkling during the next local tour to visit the botanic gardens and the famous cable car. The conference was then full on. The following evening, Qantas Holidays hosted a function in the Tapapa Museum with a private viewing of their new Gallipoli exhibition. It is brilliantly done, very moving and highly recommended for a visit if anyone is in Wellington. At the end of the exhibition, you can do your own personal message on a red paper poppy. Most of the delegates left after the conference but I was curious to see Christchurch so I took the ferry across Cook Strait on a glorious sunny day to Picton and connected to the train to Kaikoura for the night. Then up early the next morning for a boat trip out to see the Dusky dolphins. There were literally hundreds of them and I was mesmerized by their

antics and acrobatics. Some people wanted to swim with them but I elected to watch and be delighted. Then back on the train to Christchurch. I knew the city would be very different from the last time I was there. Around Hagley Park and the Botanic Gardens you would not know that there had been a disaster there but in the city precinct it is virtually a huge building site. It was sad to see the Christchurch Cathedral in a state of ruin. The debate is still going on whether to demolish it or try to restore it. They are rebuilding the city almost from a clean slate and the plan is to have several different precincts of government, arts, technology etc. There is a saying of “wood is good” in Christchurch. It seems that the wooden buildings withstood the earthquake and anything else fell down. I bade farewell to Christchurch with the hope that they will succeed in their plans despite the constant threat of tremors and quakes. Helloworld Newton: 4/329 Pakington Street, Newtown. A CONFERENCE in Wellington meant that I would have a chance to get to know New Zealand’s capital much better. My memories from a trip years ago were hazy. Our landing in Wellington two days before was a little hair raising. I was later told that pilots are required to have a special endorsement to fly in and out of Wellington. They must be able to cope with the very strong winds often encountered there. After checking into our hotel, we wandered off to the Cuba Street area and then to the wharf precinct for a delicious seafood meal. The next day we took a walking tour conducted by a local obviously passionate about showing off their city. Bad luck for us that it was the windiest day of the year. It was exhausting and sometimes difficult walking against the wind but very enjoyable all the same. Walking with a local is the best way to get to know a city. The wind came with a wild rain storm in the evening that drenched the delegates making their way to the Air New Zealand hosted

Passion in the mix

A treatment to enjoy

THE store Eclectica is soon to celebrate its sixth birthday in its quaint little shop front on Pakington Street. The store is the brainchild of Amanda Jane who lives and breathes all things colour, design and textiles. With business breeding in her blood, Eclectica is Amanda Jane’s second store. The first store was a specialty jewellery shop which traded for over eight years selling custom-made jewellery designed by herself. Amanda is the second generation to trade from her Pakington Street block. Her great-great-grandfather Archer Witchurch owned a Singer sewing machine shop in the 1930s just four doors away from where Eclectica stands. “It’s quite surreal that a family member walked the same path as I do now on a daily basis,” Amanda said. Eclectica’s shop front has the original brass trimmed windows and black tiled facade. It was built in the early 1920s to be a fish and chip shop and to house the owner and his family upstairs. This year, Eclectica is set for expansion. The shop next door will host a larger collection of clothing and things for the home, making 148 Pakington Street an even greater shopping experience.

WOMEN often put the needs of others before their own. That’s why endota spa Geelong want to help you reconnect with your best me. The inspiration: endota spa was founded on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula, a place of light, expanse and natural oceanic beauty. The ritual: When you enter an endota spa you are greeted with our calming signature scent, our tea is served to you and our originally composed music takes you on a sensory journey. Every endota spa experience should be viewed as a treatment, not a treat. The feeling: The ultimate feeling is one of freedom. The freedom to step out of the real world for a time, and into one where the only person that matters is you. We are proud to be the largest day spa network in Australia and even prouder to be 100 per cent founded by Australian women.

Running Injury? A small problem, repeated thousands of times when you run can overload your body and cause injury! Injury may occur due to inefficiency in the way you move, or poor running biomechanics. It may be due to weakness, tightness or body dysfunction. To overcome your injury, and run pain free, the reason for your body ‘overload’ must be identified and a plan put in place to regain full function. This may involve running analysis, correcting body dysfunction, strengthening, movement reeducation and/or stretching.

Quality, service, tradition GEELONG Fresh Foods opened in 2005 in what was originally a Fagg’s Mitre 10 building. Two brothers and a sister own and run the store, implementing the knowledge and exhibiting the passion inherited from their father Ralph and mother Giovanna who they say has “fruit and vegetables running through her veins”. Five generations of fresh food experience was realised with the opening of their gourmet food store. Mark left his job to start the business with his siblings. Daniel was working as fruit and vegetable delivery driver but was passionate about starting his own business. Fresh out of school, young

ARTHRITIS Arthritic pain can be debilitating and can decrease the quality of people’s lives. There are two main forms of arthritis, Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis. The main difference between the two is that Osteoarthritis is the result of wear and tear on the joints and Rheumatoid is an autoimmune condition where your body attacks itself, resulting in swelling, inflammation and pain. It is important to talk to your doctor about your pain as prescription medicines are available and can make a huge difference. However, there are also heaps of non prescription medications out there to help with arthritic pain. Here are a few of the most common complementary medications used and some comments on their use and effectiveness.

In touch with the times

1. Fish oil - Current evidence suggests that Fish oil is most effective in reducing inflammation in Rheumatoid Arthritis. It is likely that it works similarly in osteoarthritis however there is not sufficient evidence to confirm at this time. The dose needed to get antiinflammatory effects is high and the easiest way to achieve this is to take a good quality, liquid fish oil. One teaspoon of a good quality liquid can equal 8-10 fish oil capsules. 2. Glucosamine - Make sure you are taking the sulfate form as this is the one with the clinical evidence behind it. There is very good evidence to suggest it is effective in treating symptoms of osteoarthritis as well as slowing disease progression. 3. Turmeric - The anti-inflammatory part of turmeric is called Curcumin. Curcumin is effective in decreasing morning stiffness and swelling, while increasing walking time. In a recent study curcumin was found to be more effective than Diclofenac (Voltaren) 50mg for Rheumatoid arthritis. Evidence also suggests effectiveness in osteoarthritis and a significant decrease in the need for anti-inflammatory medicines.

A blast from the past. 150238

4. SAMe - Multiple studies have found that this naturally occurring molecule may be as effective as some standard treatments for Osteoarthritis such as prescription anti inflammatories, including Celebrex . Please come in and visit me to discuss how we could better improve your quality of life with arthritic pain. i Braun & Cohen (2015) Herbs and Natural Supplements pg 473 ii Braun & Cohen (2015) Herbs and Natural Supplements pg 1014 iii Braun & Cohen (2015) Herbs and Natural Supplements pg 858

“FOR an agent to appreciate the possibilities ... they first have to appreciate the past” Back in 1856, our home town of Geelong (including special places like Pakington Street) was a very different place. Victoria was in the grip of a historic gold rush that was attracting fortune hunters from across the globe. Local landmarks like the Geelong Town Hall and the railway line to Melbourne were still yet to take their place in the local landscape. In fact, Geelong West hadn’t actually begun to officially “exist” yet, as the area was more widely known by locals as either ‘Ashby’, ‘Kildare’ or even ‘Little Scotland’, (depending on which school they went to). While all these landmarks that we take for granted today were still taking shape on one side of the Bay, on the other side of the water a small business with a big vision for the future was also taking shape ... the business we now know today as Hodges Real Estate. Even back in 1856, Hodges was a real estate agency with a strong commitment to customer service as well as an emphasis on helping people prepare for what the future may bring. In fact, in later years it was the Hodges name that introduced the concept of an agent actually taking buyers to inspect properties, although back then it was in a horse drawn carriage rather than one of those new-fangled motor cars! Having played a key role in so many family moves over the past 160 years, it is not surprising that the Hodges name has become known as such a valued source of advice and strategic planning for countless clients across Victoria. Having seen so many changes over the years, (indeed, having had a hands-on role in many of them), the team at Hodges can call on a depth of experience that very few real estate agencies can provide. Nowadays, this extensive knowledge and experience of the Geelong marketplace enables the Hodges team to provide home owners with in-depth guidance, not just on what opportunities the current market will provide, but also what is possible with a few strategic adjustments. So if you’re keen to discover what possibilities today’s strong property market could hold for you ... give the team at Hodges a call on 5222 7772.

This chick’s fighting fit BY ALLIRA JADE HELLO foodies, Another month has flown by and I was stumped as to what to do this month. So I thought I would interview a local PT and health nut. Lilly Kerr is a self-confessed fitness chick who thrives on adrenalin, she loves being outdoors and is constantly on the move. She’s a passionate young 21-year-old who seems very ambitious and enthusiastic about everything. Ballarat born, Lilly has called Geelong her home for a little while as she had been studying at Deakin Uni. She was studying commerce which she found interesting but wasn’t her passion. During this time she went on to study fitness as well and is still studying components now. She now dedicates her time to training clients between here and Ballarat as well as building up her business Macfilly fitness. Her clientele is ever growing and will continue grow as her next step on her journey takes her to Bendigo where she endeavours to study teaching, mainly focusing on outdoor education and PE teaching. In between all of it she dedicates her time to Crossfit

which she has just discovered and working within a volunteer program in Ballarat working with kids, oh and did I mention she just came back from doing the trek to Mt Everest base camp? WOW! When I sat down with Lilly, she already had a big bowl of fruit cut up for us and some yogurt for us to nibble over throughout the interview, which

brought us to the topic of nutrition and eating well. She talks about how important it is to keep your body fuelled throughtout the day to keep you going, eating fresh foods and healthy proteins. It’s a big place - light and airy - and I imagined it would be a terrific spot for a drink on a nice afternoon or evening. There were only two other diners when we were there, so things were quiet. Our friendly waitress took our drink orders and although everything took a while to come out, my strong skinny flat white was superb. Being a self-confessed coffee snob, I’d actually travel to have coffee here - it was that good. The menu was limited for children’s options, but a few of us were looking forward to the waffle benedict, only to be told that it was unavailable. Disappointment. I settled for simple scrambled eggs on sourdough. It was tasty and the eggs were cooked nicely. Others in our party had coconut pancakes, bacon and eggs and the Zigfrids breakfast sandwich. Nobody left unhappy or hungry. Food and drink service was slow, but that just meant I could order a second cup of that delicious coffee.

Our waitress was friendly and although some items were unavailable, which seemed odd given it was the Sunday of the Australia Day weekend, we had a good meal. Prices were reasonable and I

would love to return, especially for the coffee or for evening drinks on a warm night. Address: 66 Pakington Street, Geelong West; phone: 5221 1555; online: www.zigfrids. com.au

“all in moderation”. We couldn’t help but ask what her favourite cafes along Pako are? She loves the French corner cafe, Box Office as its outdoors and has a very good vibe, she even tells me Bar pizza is the best pizza on Pako. We also asked her where are some fun places to work out? Along the waterfront as there are so many stairs and

it’s a great cardio workout, the run between Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads seems to be her favourite. We cannot wait to see what the future holds for Lilly. If you want to check out her journey her details are: Instagram: @ macfilly.fitness; Facebook: / macfilly fitness; website: www. macfilly.com

PAKO business

81 years sewn up for Heights JUST like the city itself, Heights Sewing Centre is a Geelong institution. Owned by Ken and Marjorie Wilks for the past 53 years, the friendly sewing centre in Pakington Street, Geelong West, was first established in 1935 by Ken’s uncle, Les Height. Since then four generations of Ken’s family have sold sewing machines and haberdashery. Now in its 81st year, Heights also operates a dedicated team of factory-trained technicians for servicing and repairs to all brands of sewing machines and overlockers. Ken enjoys coming to work even after 53 years. It’s a philosophy that has worked well for Geelong’s oldest sewing and haberdashery business. Far from being just a shop. Heights Sewing centre is a haven for sewing enthusiasts. It’s a great starting point for people who want to learn about sewing. Happy customers are the most important thing for Ken and his staff who ensure that they all leave informed and satisfied. Everyone who purchases a machine or overlocker from heights receives free instructions on its use and advice about all aspects of sewing. The enchanting and historic store is open 9am to 5.30pm weekdays, and 9am to 1pm Saturdays, at 176 Pakington Street, Geelong West.

A picture of tranquility. 150021

In the community’s heart WEST Park is not only a lovely park to take a stroll through, it is also beautifully located in the heart of Pakington Street. With exceptional barbecue facilities, toilets, car parking, stunning gardens, a memorial, a rotunda and plenty of shade is the perfect place to take walk or run or take the family for a picnic without travelling too far. In a town such as Geelong West you are always bound to come across some sort of history. The land was originally owned by W.J. Reid, who sold the northern portion of his “Pineville” property to Geelong West Borough Council. Once the council had ownership of the land in 1911, it was only a matter of months before it was transformed into a public park. Gravel pathways and garden beds were laid out, seats and statues were installed as well as iron gates erected at

the Pakington and Autumn street corner. The town held an official opening on 17 February, 1912, by the Hon. W.H. Edgar. In early 1912 a tennis court and quoits ground was laid out to the west of the grounds, which was acquired from the estate of John Baxter. Further on in the year Geelong West Park also had its western portion developed into a bowling green. This obviously was the establishment of Geelong West Bowling Club. Walking through the park today, you’ll see there still is a bowling club on the west side of the park, most footpaths and garden beds are still intact and pretty as ever. However one of the newest additions to the park is the monument erected in memory of Thomas Ambrose Bowen. If you haven’t already guessed

Thomas Ambrose Bowen is the pioneer of the Bowen technique, an alternative therapy for the treatment of muscular skeletal and neurological disorders. Thomas Bowen (1916-1982) began developing his technique in the 1950s in Geelong. He was interested in ways of easy discomfort and pain in humans which he soon found that certain moves on the body had particular effects. Thomas Bowen frequently stated that his work was “A gift of God” as he had no previous formal training. He further developed his technique over the years with the help of a friend and secretary, Rene Horwood. Mr Bowen became so busy in Geelong Clinic - he was performing about 13,000 treatments a year. Treatments were seven days apart and most people needed only one to three

treatments, therefore allowing a large amount of people pass through the clinic and benefit from his gift. Bowen also held free clinics for children, people with disabilities and community service workers. His great work and help to others didn’t go unnoticed, it was verified by the 1975 Victorian Government inquiry into alternative health care professionals, which further led onto a technique now being taught around the world. Not only has this park got a rich history it also is a community hub for festivals and markets. West Fest is a festival based on bringing the community together such as local artists, creative industries and community groups. How lucky we are to have such beautiful spaces and greenery in the middle of the hustle and bustle.

NOT IN YOUR GENES: THE REAL REASONS CHILDREN ARE LIKE THEIR PARENTS By Oliver James (Randomhouse)

PROFESSOR Robert Plomin, the world’s leading geneticist, said in 2014 of his search for genes that explain differences in our psychology: ‘I have been looking for these genes for 15 years. I don’t have any’. The book will not only change the way you think about yourself and the people around you, but give you the fuel to change for the better.

HOW TO MEND A HEART By Sara Gillingham, Random House

A CHARMING arts-and-crafts approach to dealing with first moments of heartbreak - be it caused by a lost pet, a friend’s moving away, or even simple childhood injustice. Sara Gillingham (How To Grow A Friend) understands the gentle touch needed to soothe a sore heart. Her fresh and whimsical design makes an enticing vehicle for her advice.

SPECIAL By Georgia Blain, Random House

FERN Marlow is alone, datawiped and in hiding. Her mobie says she’s Delia Greene, a ReCorp refuse sorter. Every day she queues to work, to earn just enough to stay alive. Every night she dreams of the past and the life she’s meant to be living, back at Halston, an exclusive school for those wealthy enough - or lucky enough - to be genetically designed. Her rescuers said her former life was a lie, that she can trust no-one. Is she special?

MEDITATIONS ON INTENTION AND BEING By Rolf Gates

WHILE many people think of yoga as a purely physical exercise, it is just as much a mental discipline. In this muchanticipated follow-up to his beloved first book, Meditations from the Mat, acclaimed yoga practitioner Rolf Gates delves even deeper into the essential role of meditation in yogic practice. Presented in the form of 365 short reflections, Gates helps readers reflect, too.

HAVING managed more than 1000 properties over the past eight years from the Geelong Ryrie Street Office, Release Property Management (Release) has a new place to call 'home'. On Monday 25 January this year, Release opened the doors at 88 Pakington Street, Geelong West. Director Renee Reynolds commented on the past eight years. "When we first started, I saw the property management industry change with rental prices declining due to economic changes and large subdivisions being released. There has, however, always been a demand for rental properties and over the past couple of years, I have seen strength returning to the rental market, and in turn, rental prices increasing.” After a comprehensive fitout, Release has turned the previous Lifeline shop into a modern, fresh new office environment catering for more than 15 staff. “I found that we had outgrown the Ryrie Street office and parking for our clients and staff was hard to find. Our Pakington Street office is not only larger for our

continued growth, it is also easier for parking. Of course, the staff also love the local shopping, cafes and restaurants along the street,” Ms Reynolds said. As the business continues to expand, the Pakington Street head office will service the Geelong area as well as providing corporate services such as Marketing and HR to the Release branches. Release will begin to focus on the Bellarine Peninsula. Release is an innovative and progressive property management agency with a strong focus on continuously improving customer service and training staff.
