The education campaign aims to help candidates be transparent and protect the reputations of themselves and others by stopping false or frivolous complaints being made to the CCC. CCC chairman Alan MacSporran QC said while most candidates ran honest campaigns, history indicated there were spikes in the number of complaints to the CCC during local government elections. “Regrettably our experience has shown that during election campaigns, some candidates have been known to make allegations to the CCC in the hope of gaining some advantage over rival candidates,”

LET the campaigns begin. After months of speculation and early campaigning, the official campaigns for this year’s Southern Downs Council elections finally got underway yesterday with nomination period officially closing. The elections will be held on 19 March, with 36 people nominating as candidates for the Southern Downs council - and four for the position of mayor. In the mayoral race Jay Nauss has drawn number one on the ballot, with current deputy mayor Ross Bartley who is putting his hat in the ring for

the top job this time - taking the second spot. Tracy Dobie drew number three with current incumbent Peter Blundell drawing the last place. On the main ballot, it was Phillip Buddle who drew the all-important top spot ahead of Steve Hilton and Neil Meiklejohn. Meanwhile the Crime and Corruption Commission (CCC) and the Local Government Association of Queensland have teamed-up to urge candidates for the 2016 local government election to run honest campaigns. An education campaign was launched earlier this month by the CCC with the full support of the LGAQ.

It can also be a criminal offence to knowingly make a complaint that is not true.

Aiming to listen AUTHOR, a classical pianist, artist and volunteer, Stanthorpe’s Janice Mau is hoping to add councillor to her list of titles. “The desire to serve on council began to grow in 2014,” Janice, a grandmother, said. “While out and about, I was continually listening, noting how people were feeling, hearing what their concerns were for the area in which they live. “I observed areas that needed attention, and could see huge potential everywhere I looked. None of this has changed. I continue to listen and observe.” However, the Stanthorpe and District Chamber of Commerce member said her desire to help her community probably started even earlier. “In 2005 my husband Peter went on a fact-finding trip to

Jan Mau. Kazakhstan, Central Asia,” she said. “He was determining what would be involved if he and I committed our lives to serving there in the Kazakh community as volunteers. “The door was open for us to teach the English language and

help with vocational training of students undergoing rehabilitation in Teen Challenge drug and alcohol centres. “After most of a month spent living ‘in program’ with the students, Peter came back full of fire to return. The decision was made, and at the start of 2006 we sold almost everything we had and headed off to Kazakhstan as volunteers. “The intention was to do a one-year stint. We ended up doing almost five. After our return to Queensland, I wrote a book about our experiences, which was published in 2014.” What did those years teach her personally? “Sacrifice, commitment, love of community no matter who or where, how to work through challenges and keep your sense of humour.”

Jamie MacKenzie's successful entries at the Stanthorpe Show Picture: CONTRIBUTED Councillor Vic Pennisi issued a statement earlier this week, saying it was with a heavy heart that he penned some thoughts in relation to the sudden demise of his colleague and friend Jamie Mackenzie. “My experience with Jamie was often described as a “roller coaster ride“. You could never assume that you were on the same page,” he said.. “You could never assume that he actually understood my position on different issues, in fact Jamie was at times hard work, and many debates often escalated to another level. “Despite this, I was fortunate to see underneath the excitable, straight-to-the-point exterior and witness a passionate, sensitive, kind, generous man who was a genuinely, strong advocate for the region. He had qualities that were rarely recognised and traits that only those who listened to him were able to appreciate.

“I saw a man who would be concerned if I was travelling long distances and check to see if I was OK. I saw a man where good old fashioned chivalry was front and foremost in his life.” A fourth generation Killarney resident, Jamie Mackenzie, in his own words was a beef cattle producer, ratepayer and self-employed town planning consultant. “With a love for the region and decades of experience in local government, I was privileged in my first term on council to be the ‘voice of reason’ for the whole region, offering an informed contribution and professional 2nd opinion on council” Jamie said in a press release about the forthcoming elections. “I prefer to be the ‘town and country’ councillor promoting the climate, scenery, agricultural produce and visitor and residential appeal to attract good development. “We need in this next term to take

A TOTAL of 120 teachers from Granite Belt schools are among more than 8500 Catholic school union members across 242 school sites authorised to stop work next Thursday 25 February. The majority of the members including staff from St Joseph’s School - Secondary Campus (Stanthorpe), St Joseph’s School - Primary Campus (Stanthorpe), Assumption College (Warwick), St Mary’s School (Warwick), St Patrick’s School (Allora) and St Maria Goretti School (Inglewood) are set to take full day strike action. They allege that complaints of increasing workloads and inequitable wages remain unaddressed by their employers. Independent Education Union of Australia Queensland and Northern Territory (IEUA-QNT) Branch secretary Terry Burke said it would be up to Queensland Catholic school employers to determine whether schools remain open in light of the significant industrial action by staff. “Members have voted to escalate their campaign after continued indifference from Queensland Catholic school employers on critical matters affecting the quality of education in their schools,” Mr Burke said. “This will be the eighth stop work Queensland Catholic school teachers and support staff have taken since negotiations over working conditions started 10 months ago,” he said. Mr Burke said the number of members taking action was growing because it was becoming increasingly clear that when it came to the well-being of their employees and supporting them in achieving quality education in Queensland Catholic schools, the employers simply had no plan. A SELECTION of jams and preserves sat at the Southern Downs Chamber offices in Warwick Council last week waiting to be picked up, taken home and consumed by the man that made them or given away to a friend. It was a poignant tribute to Jamie MacKenzie, a man his colleague and friend Cr Glyn Rees described as a “unique individual”. The jams and preserves were returned after a successful run at one of the local shows. It was a part of the outpouring of grief at the loss of the former councillor felt by the whole community from his beloved Killarney through the entire Southern Downs. Mr Mackenzie was found deceased at his property by police on 10 February, just days after being stood down from the Southern Downs Regional Council. Cr Rees said he had always admired the “very private man” who showed such commitment to Killarney and the wider Southern Downs and passion to local government. He was a man, Cr Rees said, who was proud of his family’s history and of his work as a councillor and who had spent recent years caring for his elderly father Bruce until his death last year. He loved his Killarney property and liked nothing more than escaping to a small hilltop hut, boiling a billy and having a chat. Cr Rees said he was able to do that with him on a couple of occasions. “He could walk the walk at the highest level and still be very comfortable in a one-on-one situation,” he said. And then, of course, he loved to make jams and chutneys and often cleaned up at the local Agricultural Shows.

“BE KIND, FOR EVERYONE YOU MEET IS FIGHTING A HARDER BATTLE.” PLATO Given the circumstances of the past week, I don’t believe it appropriate to use this space for campaign advertising. I hope that Council’s silence is not seen as unsympathetic but we have chosen to respect the wishes and requests of the Mackenzie family and hope others will do the same. In a period of thought and contemplation, now is the time to reflect on what defines us as a community. I have lived in this region my entire life and have always admired the resilience, compassion and mutual cooperation that you just don’t see in bigger cities. I worry that we are losing sight of this. Amidst the ongoing negativity, increased expectations and the need for instant satisfaction and gratification, we are losing sight of personal accountability. Freedom of speech does not mean freedom from responsibility. We live in a time and place where there is so much pressure not to stand too tall, nor fall too hard. Please let us start showing more compassion, more respect and more kindness to each other regardless of our diferences. I sincerely hope we can move forward as a region, work together and be more positive about ourselves and our future.

Man of beliefs WE, as a community, are much poorer for the loss of Jamie MacKenzie. I knew him better than most of our other councillors simply because he was out and about in the community, willing to talk about issues for as long as necessary. Rather than keep the peace and collecting his pay at the end of the week, he stood up for his convictions and beliefs and, importantly, for the community which longs to see this in our federal and state politicians. He sought to demand commitment and accountability from those working for the council as well as from his fellow councillors. This is what the community has been asking for, but seldom getting. I don’t know what drove him to end his life last week but the accumulating forces must have been horrific for such a courageous and kind individual to see no future. Vale Jamie. Adele Thomas, Berat.

Think about it WELL, well, here we go again. Mayor Blundell and the CEO did not want to comment about our retiring Cr Mr MacKenzie. Maybe it was because the councillor did not agree with their decisions and why should this councillor be replaced by the mob we have now when we have only got a caretaker council now. I also read where council wants people to read their water meters daily. Maybe it would be a better idea if council maintained their water meters as we heard most of them are faulty, but when you ring the council they expect the ratepayer to repair their water meters. Seems very funny to me as you have to pay for repairs on something you do not own. Maybe if rate payers sent the council a bill to have your car repaired would they pay the bill. I was recently told by a councillor to get out of our financial problems we need another 5000 rate payers in the ADRC area (ha ha). Who is going to move here with a half built shopping centre and many empty shops and businesses closing down weekly? So I would like the ratepayers to think. We need a new council and mayor and maybe the CEO should resign and move on so the ratepayers get value for the exorbitant rates we are asked to pay. I think the small townships need a bit more service. Clean water would be a help as most of these little towns have very poor quality of water. The small towns pay more for untreated water than people in Toowoomba pay for their treated water. W. Long, Karara.

Dominion of debt WELL, January for 2016 is over and, as usual, it concluded with nationwide Australia Day celebrations, citizenship ceremonies and the now usual push by the republican movement to free Australia of its colonial yoke. And they are right that Australia, as an independent nation, should be free of all fetters, ties and subserviences to foreign powers. The problem now is that not all foreign powers are represented by a foreign government and while our present ties to the British Crown have no significant detriment to us, other than to our ego, Australia remains shackled completely to an international banking and financial services industry that is milking us dry. It has recently and reliably been published that our Federal Government has a monthly interest obligation of $1 billion, at the lowest estimate. That is $12 billion a year and $48 billion over the forward estimates period. But our Federal Government is not the only Australian authority to be indebted to international banking. Our state and local governments have combined borrowings that would easily match those of the Commonwealth which moves our interest liability over the forward estimates period to $96 billion, which is a lot of money over a very short time. And it will only stay that low if we maintain our present credit ratings which are set, of course, by the international bankers. On top of all this there is the private and business sectors which have all the potential of doubling the above figures again. So maybe the Republicans are merely a diversion with their head-of-state problems or maybe they should stick with their mantra of independence but put it on a priority basis and tackle the relevant subserviences first. The immediate gains to the Australian people would be truly significant and then we would all be republicans. Jim Flesser, Mt Marshall.

Nuclear impact IF a proposed 50 kilometre Community Consultation Exclusion Zone is imposed on the area

surrounding Bennett’s Gully at Omanama, other centres including Warwick, Toowoomba, Goondiwindi, Stanthorpe, Millmerran, Texas, Gore, Karara and Leyburn will be denied the opportunity to protest against the possible siting (virtually on their doorstep) of a national nuclear waste facility. This was the loud and clear message delivered by Mark Russell, one of the speakers at a community public meeting, which was held on Friday 12 February at Inglewood by the Friends of Omanama to give a balanced presentation of facts about the regional and national consequences if Omanama, 21kms east of Inglewood, is chosen as the site for the proposed National Nuclear Waste Facility. A crowd of nearly 200 people attended. Mark Russell, a property owner at Gore, said the people living in the towns that were likely to be excluded had every right to be part of the consultation process. Feedback from these centres has registered surprise that Omanama might become a nuclear waste dump then anger at the impact it would have on the reputation of the areas to the north, south, east and west of Inglewood and the viability of the rural and business sectors, the tourism industry and the general public. Mark questioned the employment offers alluded to by the government’s consultation team and the opportunities for local contractors during and after the construction phase of any waste facility and described the government strategy in selecting the six sites as deeply flawed. He said it was done without producing any evidence of an environmental study, there was no geological study for suitability, no indigenous cultural heritage study, no evidence of how the proposed facility would comply with the Qld Nuclear Facilities Prohibition Act 2007 or comply with the code of practice for the near surface disposal of radioactive waste in Australia 1992. In contrast to this, the Queensland Labor Government Minister for State Development and Minister for Natural Resources and Mines, Dr Anthony Lynham, had advised that the Queensland Government does not support, in any circumstances, anywhere in Queensland being utilised for radioactive waste storage. Other speakers during the night included Friends of Omanama co-ordinator Dr Colin Owen who emphasised that the aim of the evening was to share information. Group member Bob Morrish spoke on the difference between storage and disposal and gave a history overview of the nuclear waste situation in Australia. Vanessa Grady’s subject was ‘What really is the difference between low level waste and intermediate level waste’, Annette Clement’s topic was ‘Incidents and mishaps - Australia and the world’, Sue Campbell spoke on community effect and ‘Thirty Pieces of Silver - What Price’ while property and community values were discussed by Belinda Marriage. Omanama resident Kerry Edmonstone, whose property lies in close proximity to the proposed nuclear waste site, gave an overview of the dramatic consequences which will affect the lives of her and her husband if the Omanama site is chosen by the government. Two video presentations were shown during the night, one by prominent nuclear radiologist Peter Koramoskos and the other a Lateline segment. The evening concluded with a short address titled ‘The process so far and a better way forward’ given by Dr Owen who thanked the audience for being amazingly attentive during the night. • Name a job and I’ve probably had a crack at it; • I’ve started up several businesses from scratch and made a success of them before selling them on; • When I arrived in the region eleven years ago, I couldn’t ﬁnd a full-time job but found some casual work, including driving a skip truck, washing cars and disability care. (I know how hard it is to get meaningful work in the region and will work towards improving employment prospects, particularly for young people and the long-term unemployed); • Wanting to improve my employment prospects, I went back to school as a mature student in 2009. I now have a social science degree and some post-graduate qualifications in community related subjects. I’m a believer in life-long education and am still studying; • I’ve been working for State Government in a Community Service role for the past five years; • I think ‘outside of the box’ and look for solutions to problems that are ‘win-win’; • Considering myself to be decisive, I’m used to making important evidence-based decisions, I use common sense, critical-thinking and risk-assessment; • I like to play devil’s advocate and have been known to use irony and humour, even in formal settings; • A ‘big picture’ person, I would bring a broad worldview to the role of Councillor, I’ve travelled Australia and the world and would not get bogged down in cliques and petty squabbles.

The choir in action.

Choir brings voice of calm By TANIA PHILLIPS FOR more than 20 years, listeners to Classic FM on ABC radio’s breakfast program have enjoyed a segment called Swoon, described as “a musical oasis of calm”. With that in mind, visitors to this year’s 50th anniversary of the Apple and Grape Festival in Stanthorpe will be able to take a calming break from the hustle and bustle of the festival and enjoy a concert of Swoon-inspired music. It will be performed by the Granite Belt Choir, which has contributed to this festival for more than 26 years with what has become known as The Musical Quiet Hour. Musical director Jeanene Chapman has selected 13 beautiful songs under the headings Love, Life and Blessing - so be prepared to be soothed by classic compositions old and new, including snatches from Faure’s Requiem, and Dido and Aeneas. Instrumentalists from The Occasional Players will accompany the choir, with members of the Granite Belt Junior Choir joining in for several numbers. As usual, The Musical Quiet Hour will be held at St Paul’s Anglican Church, on the corner of High and Corundum streets, in Stanthorpe. There will be two performances: on Saturday 5 March, at 4pm, and on Sunday 6 March, at 11.30am. Entry is by donation.

IN the lead-up to the next round of water meter readings, and increased residential requests for water rates relief due to excessive consumption from water leaks, council is urging residents to check their water meter regularly. Southern Downs Regional Council’s manager Water and Wastewater Tendekai Mapeza said residents should regularly check their water meter to detect any leaks and should also check that there were no leaks around water meters and other water infrastructure on their properties such as tap connections. It is recommended that residents perform an overnight leakage test to check for any leakage at pipes and taps. Water meter readings will start on 29 February . Water rates notices are due to be issued on 13 April, with payment due by 13 May. What is Physie or physical culture? “A Physie class is based on ballet and modern dance, with floor and standing exercises included in a routine,” Fiona explains. “Each week, the routine is refined and improved, with competitions held at the end of the year. “You can start taking classes from about the age of three or four and progress through the junior ranks until they become seniors at 17. “Many women who were involved in physie come back after a break, or having children, as they are attracted to the camaraderie and the fact that it’s such a well-rounded form of fitness. It’s a form of exercise that attracts a broad age range of participants.” Fiona is excited that the syllabus of physie changes every year, with about six routines per week, set to the latest music. THE Granite Belt Physie Club has been in existence since 2012 and is looking for new members. Principal teacher Fiona Kelly has had a lifelong association with Physical Culture and the Granite Belt Club. Teacher Trudy Campbell developed her love for physie when she brought her daughter along to join a class, later joining and competing herself. Trudy is also studying Education which is a huge advantage when teaching a physie class. Assistant teacher Sam Cox has also had a lifelong love for physie and went on to achieve a personal goal in 2015 of making it to the national finals. The club has continued to grow from strength to strength developing young girls, teenagers and ladies passion for physie. In 2015, the Granite Belt Physie Club had three teams gain a place at the national finals, with two winning their section and 15 members being selected from their zone competition. This is the largest amount of representatives the club has ever had. Turning disappointment into determination, having fun and achieving your goals is impressive. Dancing on the national stage of a sport that you adore is a dream come true. Jenna Sutcliffe and Sianna Green of the Granite Belt Physie Club managed to do exactly that in 2015, achieving their goals and placing third and fifth in the 12 Years sections and competing at the BJP Physie Junior National Championships. Neither girl had made it this far before but slowly dancing there way closer and closer and working very hard over a number of years to final make it. Physie certainly helps build confidence and resilience according to Fiona. “There is something very exciting and rewarding about watching the girls and ladies set goals and strive for their own personal best,” Fiona said. “To see a member achieve, whether it be the confidence to join in the team, enter their first competition or resilience to strive for a National Final, it is always a highlight. Physie is so much fun and empowering in that way. It develops young girls to be happy, healthy and confident. Physie is a sport for life.”

After a long hot summer, the popular Mainly Music program is back, with Warwick sessions being on Thursdays 9.15 to 10.45am or 10.15 to 11.45am. Both sessions involve songs, dance, morning tea and play. Grandmas and Grandpas are always welcome to join in the busyness with their ‘little people’. Organisers say they will miss the ‘older’ children as they start either kindy or preschool and wish them many happy learning experiences as they branch out into the big world of school.

Schools’ commitment to Indigenous education INDEPENDENT, Catholic and state schools are joining forces across the Darling Downs and South West to share resources and expertise to improve the education outcomes of Indigenous students and strengthen the teaching of Indigenous cultures and histories in local schools. The three schooling sectors have signed a Collaboration Charter that will underpin their joint commitment to improving outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in priority areas such as school readiness, attendance, literacy and numeracy, and post-school pathways. The Charter has been signed by Independent Schools Queensland Executive Director David Robertson, the Bishop of Toowoomba the Most Rev Robert McGuckin and Department of Education and Training Regional Director Greg Dickman. It was launched in Toowoomba earlier this week at an event attended by representatives from each of the schooling sectors, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander elders and local students including Toowoomba Grammar School Year 10 boarder Jacob Burgoyne who will share what education means to him as an Indigenous student. The launch of the Charter follows the release this week of the 2016 Closing the Gap report by Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull which showed

positive progress in Year 12 completion rates for Indigenous students but little change in school attendance rates and mixed results in reading and numeracy measures. It also comes on the eve of the eighth anniversary of former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd’s moving apology in Parliament to Australia’s Stolen Generations. Mr Robertson commended the school leaders, teachers, staff, parents and community partners involved in this significant collaboration project. “This Charter represents the commitment of a local community to pooling its knowledge, energy and resources to make a difference to the education and life outcomes of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, and to community understanding and appreciation of the history and cultures of Australia’s First Peoples,” he said. “Research continually confirms that education is transformative. It not only equips students with the knowledge and skills to succeed in life, but also helps shape their identity and boost their confidence to tackle life’s challenges and opportunities,” he said. Nearly 4000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students attend independent schools in Queensland including about 245 students enrolled across 17 of the 19 independent schools operating on the Darling Downs.

All the best on show SELF taught chainsaw sculptor Rodger Hanneman will bring his unusual talents to the 104th Killarney Show which is being held on Friday, Saturday and Sunday this week. It will be a chance to see the man who describes himself as someone who is “dedicated and passionate about designing and creating new art pieces made from timber” in action, and just one of the attractions sure to capture the imagination at this year’s event. And after a couple of years of bad weather the committee is looking forward to a big event this year. As a special treat, this year’s show will be opened by two very special ladies and pillars of the community. Between them, Clare Brosnan and Shirley Ballard have put in almost 60 years of hard work on the show society committee serving in some of the top jobs.

Just what will Rodger find in a block of wood?

Though their involvement is probably a little scaled back these days, the two are still always on-hand when they are needed, and so have been given the honour of opening this year’s event. As always one of the major highlights of the Killarney Show will be Saturday night’s Smash-up Derby with all the thrills and spills that this event always brings with it. There will be plenty of fireworks on the track during the event but there will be even more in the sky when the fireworks display is unleashed to mark the end of Saturday’s big program. And while there will be all the fun of the fair at sideshow alley and lots of displays in the pavilion, organisers expect this year’s Prime Cattle and Stud Cattle events to be one of the major drawcards with $1000 on offer for the best led steer or heifer.

Organiser Ann Barry said the meeting would start promptly at 7pm. “All new candidates who have supplied an email address will be contacted but the first 10 to respond will be given four to five minutes to present what they have to offer the community on a newly elected council,” she said. “Other candidates are welcome but will have to mingle with the community members present at meeting. “Community members are strongly urged to come along and support the meeting and see what the future council may look like so that we can be informed and therefore make better choices when marking our ballot papers. “I am aware some candidates have visited Stanthorpe and Wallangarra but unless you were in town or at the show and come in contact with them - we have no idea who or what they would bring to new council.” MC will be Norm Crisp and tea and coffee will be available. “I ask that members start arriving by 6.30pm so that the meeting can get started on time,” Ann said. “I don’t think I can urge strongly enough how important this election will be if we want a better council to represent the region for the next four years. Remember, we get what we vote for, if you want change, come along and be informed, that is the best we can organise.”

MORE than 100 invited guests helped Neville Bryant celebrate his 80th birthday at the Stanthorpe RSL on Sunday. They came from as far away as Cairns in the north and Foster in the south, Glen Innes, Grafton, Alstonville, Warwick and Toowoomba to suprise Neville for his birthday. Neville, who turns 80 at the end of the month, worked for many years for the DPI on the Border Gates and has been heavily involved in the Stanthorpe Agricultural Society for many decades, the Stanthorpe Pony Club, The Apple and Grape Festival and many other local organisations. Deadpool and an Angsty Teen. take itself seriously in any way - something that becomes evident in the first 10 minutes of the film. The opening credits are brilliantly funny (cast and crew are given an “apt description” rather than their names, including “British Villian” and “Angsy Teenager”). In short if you know the comic books then this is Deadpool at his purest and probably the closest of the adaptations to their comic book origins. Reynolds is in his element, in fact it’s hard to know where he starts and the character ends (of course it helps that he’s a fan). He is irreverent and self deprecating and it’s clear he did quite a bit of improvising. The thing that makes Dead-

pool different in the comic book universe is that the character knows he’s in a movie and quite often “breaks the fourth wall” and talks to the audience (at one stage stopping the action to ask if he’s left the stove on or make a crack about the budget not extending to more than two X-Men). It adds to the humour and the fun of this riproaring action movie which hums along despite some fairly dark themes including cancer and torture. The only downsides are that Deadpool’s plot is a little thin and it relies heavily on violence and action scenes but it’s still fun and just that little bit out of the norm to keep the adult movie goer engaged. - Tania Phillips

POMS HAVE GOT THEIR MAN ENGLAND’S rugby league chief Nigel Wood has defended Wayne Bennett’s appointment as national team coach, saying the country’s exciting group of players deserve the best chance to succeed. The choice of Bennett, the most successful coach in the Australian game, brought criticism from some prominent Super League coaches. Wood, however, is in no doubt they got the right man. He said Bennett is the pre-eminent coach of the modern, possibly any era with a proven track record at club and representative level and is a sincere internationalist. Bennett, of course, played a part in the resurgence of the Kiwis several years ago when he joined forces with Stephen Kearney on the NZ coaching team for what, he said, at the time was for “the betterment of the game of rugby league”. The current group of English players are exciting and Wood believes they deserve the best in the business in coaching and support to maximise their opportunity to succeed. Of course, it gives the Bennett knockers just another reason to dislike him. Bennett will combine the part-time role with his full-time job at NRL club Brisbane as he fulfils a two-year contract that takes in this year’s Four Nations Series and the 2017 World Cup. Four Nations success has eluded England team, and it is nearly 44 years since their last major triumph, the 1972 World Cup. Wood said Bennett’s support staff would most likely be drawn from Super League. “Wayne’s nationality is a non-issue for me,“ Wood said. “It’s actually about competence, ability and desire to succeed, and I have no question marks on any front. “We do, however, recognise that the coaching support group should ideally be populated by coaches from the Super League, and this is what we will be seeking to achieve. Ultimately, it is of course Wayne’s call.“ Bennett was due to arrive in England 48 hours after the bulk of his Brisbane squad - having been involved in Saturday’s NRL All Stars game - and will finalise his team’s preparations for the 2016 World Club Series. Brisbane take on Wigan at the DW Stadium on Saturday night, a match

sandwiched between Sydney Roosters’ clash with St Helens at Langtree Park and next Sunday’s World Club Challenge between Leeds and North Queensland at Headingley. The series will give Bennett a chance to sound out potential assistant coaches and also cast his eye over England candidates ahead of the Four Nations at the end of the year. “The next week is an incredibly exciting time for rugby league fans in this country, with the best three teams in the NRL taking on three of the best in the Super League in the World Club Series,“ Wood added. “Wayne will have the chance to witness first-hand some of the best talent available to him when Brisbane take on Wigan on Saturday night, and I am sure all of the English players playing this weekend will be aiming to impress the new coach. “The coming years will undoubtedly be an exciting and important time for international rugby league with the Four Nations this year and the World Cup only 20 months or so away. “We have got a great group of players, and now the undisputed best coach. He also won gold medals in both disciplines in the Australian Junior Championships, and competed in the World University games winning a silver medal in the discus event. RSL GO BACK TO BACK IN MINOR PREMIERSHIP RSL have been the form team of the 2015/’16 cricket season, and last weekend they wrapped up the minor premiership with another impressive performance as they dominated in the game against Tenterfield. On paper the game looked a mismatch and Tenterfield who batted first were in trouble from the outset against the strong RSL bowling attack. The visitors were

all out for only 93. Ross Lupton looks to be back in good form with the ball, and finished with two wickets for nine runs. Luke Brady and Harry Williams also claimed two wickets apiece. It took RSL only 16 overs to reach the required total. The win handed RSL back-to-back minor premierships and they picked up bonus points on the way. While the minor premiership is a good result, captain Will Dowie admits RSL have eyes only for the main prize, the premiership. His side has a bye this weekend. RSL’s final fixture game of the season will be against Valleys before all teams have a break during the Apple and Grape festivities and return for the finals. While RSL are well deserved premiership favourites, over many years Souths have proved they can never be written off until the fat lady sings and have the premierships to prove it. In recent weeks, they have shown they will once again have a strong hand in the finals. Their performance on Saturday against Valleys indicates they are finding form at the right time. Valleys had first use of the CF White wicket and despite some solid early partnerships they were all out for 181. A good spell of bowling from South’s Caleb Hutchings netted him five wickets and stalled the Valleys innings. In reply things did not go exactly to plan for Souths when they lost early wickets. Batting stalwart Bluey Lanza was dismissed for a first ball golden duck. Several solid partnerships saw Souths recover to reach the required total in only the 27th over for the loss of only five wickets in what was an impressive win. Jordan Lanza continues to impress and finished the innings not out 70. Adam Bonner also looked to be in good touch with the bat.

On Saturday the club hosts the Wallangarra Rams Golf Day. Competition is a four-ball Ambrose and the cost of $25 includes a meal. It is a shotgun start commencing at 11.30am. There will be plenty of great prizes and good fun to be had. Last Saturday the club hosted a Single Stableford. Peter Butler took out the event after a solid round, returning a score of 40 points. Just a point back was Simon Blair and Gary Sutcliffe. After a countback, Simon Blair was declared the runner-up relegating Sutcliffe to third spot. Pin shots went to Andrew Thompson (9), Tony Murphy (11) and Jamie Purcell (15). Blair and Hampstead claimed the approach shots on two and 14 respectively. Alan Lutter emptied the jackpot barrel on hole 16. One event that should already be in the diary of all members is the AGM which will be held in February at the completion of the regular Saturday game. FINGERLINGS RELEASED WARWICK Fish Stocking recently took delivery of 1500 silver perch in boxes for the Condamine River, 1500 in boxes for Connolly Dam and 5000 in bulk for Leslie Dam. All Murray Cod have been stocked for this season in the dams and rivers with most of the golden perch due to be delivered and released in coming weeks. MALLET PLAYER NUMBERS ON THE

INCREASE THERE were pleasing numbers in all disciplines at the Warwick Croquet club last week. In the association croquet games, Heather Widderick and Val Richardson played Effey Russell and Andrea Denkewitz. Russell had a break of three and Denkewitz a break of four as they powered their way to a 26-13 win in their game. Pat Schnoor and Jenny Tunbridge played Grace Howard in a thrilling game that ended in a 22 all draw. There was another draw in the game between Joy Newman partner Val Shepherd and Margaret Dickenson. This game finished in a 21-all draw. Eight players took to the greens for a morning of Hoop Runners Golf Croquet. There was some outstanding play as two groups played doubles. Bill Golding and Dianne Wren had a comfortable 3-3 win over Elaine Brown and Liz Ellway who were slow to get into the game. The final score 13-3. Bill Goldman top-scored with seven hoops. The second group of Teresa Pyne and Shirley Evans overcame Val Fancourt and Shirley Page to take out the game 137. Teresa Payne was top scored in this game with seven hoops. In the second round of games after the tea break, Goldman and Shirley Evans were pitted against Shirley Page and

Elaine Brown. Shirley Evans was in top form for this game, scoring nine hoops as she and Goldman won the game 13-8. In the other game, Val Fancourt and Dianne Wren scored 13 against Liz Ellway and Teresa Pyne 10. The top scorer in this game was Val Fancourt with seven hoops. Gateball players were met with blustery conditions on Friday and the inconsistent conditions copped plenty of blame for any wayward shots. There were eight players on deck and one player from each played two balls. The first game saw a narrow 12 - 11 points win for the Red team. It was all one-way traffic after the opening game as the White team went on to win the next three games. Overall, Val Fancourt was the most consistent player on the day. There were also some good shots played by Bill Goldman and Margaret Dickenson. DAM RIDE ON AGAIN BIKE Riders young and old, serious and recreational are expected to be out in numbers for the annual “That Dam Ride”. The ride this year will once again start and finish at Storm King Dam and caters for all levels of cyclist. The 125klm full course will challenge the experienced rider, but there is also the 20km ride around the dam for families who just want to enjoy the experience. There will also be a 70km half course and 20km course for novices. Redback Cycles will be providing support during the ride. If you don’t have a bike but would like to enter, contact Jon Hendry owner of Granite belt Bicycle Tours and Hire who will be happy help you out with wheels for the day. Organisers of the event Jenny Sherrin (SDRC) and Dan Cuthbert are thrilled with the support the event is receiving from the community. Numbers each year are increasing and last year the local Lions club added their support providing food and manning check points and support vehicles. All funds raised will be distributed within the local community. In 2015 Granite Belt Support Services were

BIG WINS FOR TOP TEAMS MARYVALE Condamine and Wheatvale are locked in a battle at the top of the Warwick Cricket Association leader board, and both sides had good wins on the weekend. Maryvale Condamine posted a comprehensive seven-wicket win over Inglewood at Slade Park on Saturday. Jason Steketee starred with both bat and ball in the win taking three wickets and backing up that effort with the bat. Inglewood batted first and were dismissed for 149. Kevin Bourke continued his good association with the ball this season, taking five wickets from his eight overs. The Maryvale openers set the platform for a win with a solid opening partnership. Steketee came in after the fall of the first wicket and ensured his side’s win with an unbeaten 57. Playing Allora, Wheatvale scored a 76-run win over their opponents in their game at Slade Park on Sunday. Fresh from a good win the previous week, Wheatvale set Allora a target of 159. The Cantwells were back in action and made their presence felt at the wicket. Neil Cantwell top scored with 37 and was well supported by Paul Cantwell (30). Matthew Kiernan was the best of the Allora bowlers taking four wickets. In reply, Allora had few answers against the Wheatvale bowling attack spearheaded by Chris Cantwell who picked up four wickets from his seven overs. Allora were dismissed cheaply for 83 runs. In their weekend FOUR OUT FOUR WARWICK Hotel Colts scored a fivewicket win over Sovereign Animals in their weekend fixture game, but the highlight of the game was undoubtedly the double hat trick from Colts pace

bowler Cameron Peterson. Peterson who had not taken a hat-trick in 10 seasons of Warwick competition, claimed four wickets in four balls and in doing so a rare “double hat-trick”. It was an impressive performance made all the better as the bowler was involved in a caught and bowled to take his third wicket. The very next ball he clean bowled Josh Klein to bring up his double hat-trick. Animals had begun their innings well, but collapsed to 6/32 in the space of Peterson’s four-ball onslaught. They failed to recover and were dismissed for 75. In reply, Colts were relatively untroubled as they reached the target in 12 overs. Geoff Thorley top-scored with 46. He was well supported by Mitch Watson (13) and Cam Peterson remained not out nine at the end of the game. The emphatic win keeps Colts aspirations of a top-four position and place in the A Grade finals alive. BIG WEEKEND AT ALLMAN PARK ALLMAN park is gearing up for another big weekend of racing when the Warwick Turf Club hosts the big St Mary’s School raceday this weekend. Good nominations have been received for the seven event program which is St Mary’s major fund-raiser for the year. One of the event organisers Basil Nolan Jnr of Raheen Stud said he was thrilled with the support the iniative had received from local business. There will be something for everyone not just the racing enthusiast with jumping castles for the kids, face paitning and a petting zoo. The Fashions on the Fields is sure to be as hotly contested as any event of the track with $800 in prizes on offer. The meeting is a full TAB meeting and oragnisers are thrilled to have the support of the Magic Millions. PREMIER DARTS RESULTS FOR TUESDAY 9 FEBRUARY Brett made a good come back to darts with a 180, 4x80s, 11 tons and 6 pegs. Iaone Coolwell did pretty good as well with 8x80s, 9 tons and 6 pegs. Shelly Crummy had also maximum wins, 8x80s,1 ton and 6 pegs. Jeff Skurr had to settle for 5 pegs, 9x80s, 7 tons. Kathleen Martin had a similar result but with less tons and 80s. Warren was on fire again with 6 pegs, 10x80s and 6 tons, while Mark Brunt had 5 pegs, 6x80s and 7 tons, Doug Brown also on 5 pegs but a few less tons. New player did well on her debut but was bit unlucky to play the big guns. Adam and Eve team did well last weekend and finished in a respectable third position. Thursday competition has started on 11 February, but will be updated next week. AGM is Saturday 10.30 am. All members, please attend. Social darts will be after AGM , probably around 1pm. WARWICK EAST BOWLS On Friday we held our initial twilight barefoot bowls, with 12 bowlers enjoying a game. This coming Friday we will be holding barefoot bowls again, this time in conjunction with a sausage sizzle. Play will start at 6pm. with names in by 5.30 pm. If you would like to play, contact the club on 4661 9050 or just turn up between 5pm and 5.30pm. No experience is necessary and we will supply all the equipment. The bar will be open for cooling drinks. On Saturday a game of triples was played, with E. Diery, B. Rowling and V. Nelson defeating N. Hassum, B. Lee and D. Weir 26-14.
