Biggest numbers brave the waves OVER 1000 swimmers lined up on Saturday for the third annual Noosa Summer Swim. Locals and visitors alike shared Noosa Main Beach with some familiar faces, with former Olympians Michael Klim and Libby Trickett taking part in the event. With more numbers this year than ever, the Noosa Summer Swim is set to grow over the years. Series ambassador Michael Klim said: “It’s a great event for families of all ages, and one that I’ll continue to support in the years to come”. The Junior Giants kicked off the day with Sarah Perkins and Mitchell Stitt com-
ing first in the 300m, and another win for Sarah Perkins in the 1000m, alongside Fraser Carsely. The most challenging event of the day, the Noosa 3.0 was hotly contested but the training paid off for Rio hopeful George O’Brien taking out first place in the men’s division with a time of 28 minutes 36 seconds and Rio-bound Chelsea Gubecka leading the women’s division in a time of just 29:39. Sunday events at the Noosa Summer Swim included beach yoga sessions and the Milk and Co Active Club, an opportunity to train alongside Michael Klim in beach circuit sessions.
Courthouse chicken By MEGAN OGLE RESIDENTS are preparing to head to court as council defends its decision to reject a chicken farm development application. Noosa Council voted to reject an application made by W. Donald Milligan Pty Ltd to begin farming chickens on his rural property late last year, which has been appealed by the applicant in the Planning and Environment Court. Local advocate group No Broiler Farm Cooroy co-convenor Rod Ritchie said three residents had volunteered to be co-respondents with council if the matter appeared in court later this year. “I’d love to be one of those three
people but I’m not however we are supporting them, we’re going to do a fund-raiser,” Mr Ritchie said. “Expert witnesses are expensive, barristers are expensive. It’s a big burden on a small community.” Mr Ritchie said the potential development of a chicken farm in Cooroy had been an ongoing issue for many years and affected many residents. “There are three main issues; the noise, the odour and the dust,” Mr Ritchie said. “The other bigger issue is the transportation.” “The B-Double trucks are quite oversized for these roads and every six weeks for three or four days we’ve got a lot of noise in the night

and the trucks rumbling through this local area and then through the streets of Cooroy.” Mr Ritchie said while he understood the subject land, which was currently an avocado farm, was zoned as rural, due to council allowing subdivisions to take place on neighbouring properties the land should be classed as rural residential. “Council have allowed these subdivisions in the past, yes, it’s a rural zone, but it’s rural residential in the sense that you can see how many houses (are) around here,” Mr Ritchie said. Mr Ritchie, who is president of Cooroy Area Residents’ Association (CARA), said while he was not against intensive farming, he was concerned about the damage a broiler
farm could do to Cooroy’s reputation. “We’ve got to feed people in the shire, I think that’s a great thing, there’s a lot of people, small landholders doing great things,” Mr Ritchie said. Furthermore Mr Ritchie said he understood the applicant “was a second generation farmer” and was technically on rural land, however “people can’t do what they want, people have to do what the council will allow them to do.” Mr Ritchie’s comments come as a second Cooroy farmer, Como Greenhouse, lodges an appeal against council’s decision after approval was given for an already-built intensive greenhouse on a Lake Macdonald property. The approval included several
conditions, which the applicant is appealing, mainly relating to flooding and water management after the property was flooded in 2015 causing debris from the tomato plants, growing media and plastic being washed into the nearby waterways. Mr Ritchie said although the farm had previously polluted local waterways there wasn’t as much community interest in this issue and was up to the courts to make a decision. “I think you’ll find there’s not nearly the interest in (this) in many ways it’s low impact, it’s a bit of a tricky issue.” “It has some noise issues but not really dust or odour. I think the problem with the creek will be decided in the court one way or another.”

Big guns in same-sex push By MEGAN OGLE MARRIAGE equality is again on the agenda as equal rights advocate Robin Bristow calls in the big guns in an attempt to persuade Noosa council to change its views. The Australian Psychological Society (APS) wrote directly to the Noosa mayor and councillors earlier this year requesting them to publically pass a resolution supporting marriage equality. FAPS manager Heather Gridley said she welcomed the opportunity to write the letter at the request of a group of Noosa residents and said marriage equality is an important issue across Australia. She said she hoped the council would take action.
“Today the message from LGBTI young people is that children, family and marriage are all incredibly important to them, as they are to so many Australians,” she wrote. “They believe they have the same rights as anyone else to them, they see them in their futures and they will no longer be denied them. Anything less is discrimination.” Sunshine Coast Rainbow Network (SCRN) spokesperson Robin Bristow has condemned Noosa council for consistently ignoring the issue and hopes the letter will prompt it to act. “The current Noosa council has steadfastly resisted all calls for it to issue a letter in support of marriage equality which has set this matter up to become a major issue in the upcoming elections,” Mr Bristow said.
“It appears Noosa council is prepared to sacrifice the wellbeing of the LGBTI community on some vague principle that they do not comment on non-council issues as well as the excuse they do not have enough time. “This is a cowardly stance. This letter will cost them nothing and have a huge effect for its residents by sending out a clear message that they are included.” Mr Bristow alleged that councillor Frank Wilkie had broken ranks with Noosa council when he personally responded to the APS letter. Cr Wilkie denied this was the case and said he received the letter and responded to Mr Bristow stating he personally supported marriage equality but had not “broken ranks” with the council. Cr Wilkie said APS’s letter would
not get the council to support the group because councillors were focused on local issues. However he said the situation may change after March’s council elections. “The current Noosa Council has been working hard to establish itself after de-amalgamation and is committed to debating and formulating policy positions on local government issues only,” Cr Wilkie said. “The post-March Noosa Council will face similar challenges as it will be some years before new systems, initiatives and policies are fully reviewed and embedded but it may wish to review its stance.” Council candidate Ingrid Jackson said that while she understands local governments have no legislative authority, as elected representatives,
“councillors are in a position to express views articulating what they believe to be community sentiment”. “As I see it, councils have a right to endorse marriage equality if they believe this is the general community view. “They also have a right to endorse marriage equality if they respect our national commitment to equality under the law, fair-mindedness and a fair go. “Noosa council can and should support marriage equality by approving an appropriately worded resolution at a general meeting. “Once Noosa council has determined a position in favour of marriage equality it should advocate to the Commonwealth Government that it take steps to achieve this.”
Groups make a valued, high-speed connection HIGH-SPEED, affordable broadband is becoming a reality for more small businesses in the Noosa region thanks to an initiative which is set on connecting Noosa with the rest of the world. Chamber of Commerce and Industry Queensland (CCIQ) Noosa and Sunshine Coast-based Our Community Broadband (OCB) joined forces last year with the new Elysium Noosa Estate to deliver a fixed wireless broadband aerial network. CCIQ Noosa president Peter Chenoweth said a second community had jumped on board the broadband wagon and was keeping tabs on the Elysium connection. “We now have a second community initiative, an emerging new cluster in Sunrise Beach, being led by four local champions, all businessmen who rely on the internet to conduct their businesses, proactively building commitment to secure a local aerial,” Mr Chenoweth said. CCIQ Noosa had been investigating a fast, affordable and reliable broadband service for the local business community after NBN Co representatives told the chamber that the region might not get broadband before 2017. Mr Chenoweth said CCIQ Noosa had not endorsed or recommended any internet alternative but recognised it as a critical, missing piece of infrastructure for local small businesses and wanted to provide members with various options. “The availability of fast, affordable local broadband is a critical piece of enabling infrastructure which will help local small businesses increase profitability, innovate and

“By collaborating, we can change and improve the way we do business in the Noosa region.” Elysium Body Corporate secretary Geoff Brinkman said the 80 connections to date had been a “remarkable achievement” and said it would add significant value to Noosa businesses and residents.
“Generally, feedback has been very positive and the internet speeds have been well in excess of what has been experienced in previous holiday periods,” he said. Mr Chenoweth said CCIQ Noosa was encouraged by the on-going interest in the region. “Our Community Broadband has
advised that a total of only seven aerials would be needed to complete a fully-functioning, self-sufficient, independent network in inner-Noosa,” he said. CCIQ Noosa hoped the region could become the ‘Silicon Valley’ of the Sunshine State.

New brand for the Bay THE much-loved Bay Village complex on Hastings Street has undergone a funky makeover revealing new branding and a fun and modern atmosphere. The food court has been jazzed up with new modern bench seats, funky chairs, mood lighting and reclaimed-wood table tops. Centre manager Paul Matthews said he hoped the makeover would attract people who were walking along Hastings Street and bring them into the centre. “People think there’s nothing down here but there are some great shops and food on offer,” he said.

United behind their efforts WOW, what a night at last week’s Sport Star of the Year Awards. It really had everything from a terrific venue to smiling winners, gobsmacked Legend inductees to standing ovations. Ninety-four-year-old Gympie cricket volunteer James Geiger had the nearly 400-strong crowd in the palm of his hands as he relayed his 60-year involvement, that started in 1948. Building a cricket pitch on his farm so he and son could train, he once belted 259 not out for Wests in 1959 and shared a 217-run partnership with his son in a season where he scored a remarkable 1004 runs. James was president of his club for 50 years, before getting involved

in zone, regional and state duties. James clearly was a true champion on and off the field. James edged out Sunshine Beach’s Warwick Redwood, who had earlier taken out SLSA National Volunteer of the Year. The inductees into the Legends category were both told white lies to get them there – humble, neither would have come if they were told they were going to be joining such an elite group. ratt was inducted the previous year. He, too, was told a story to get him there. Alex Surf Club’s Lorraine Buhk has toiled for more than 50 years after marrying husband Bill, jokingly knowing she would have some involvement with his beloved club. Only her son and daughter knew she was receiving the honour. Both sat quietly on her table before erupting when announced. The nicest and most loved NSW League player Michael O’Connor simply sat in amazement, as his accolades were being read out. And as expected the Sunshine Beach resident put big raps on most of the people sitting out his table. In particular, glowing praise for wife

The main point that was made by the Sports Federation president, was that Sunshine Coast Sport was played from Gympie to Caboolture, and all people involved on the night fell under that boundary. It’s the future we all must start looking towards, and with the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the horizon, that’s gives us a good start. Councils represented on the night, Moreton Bay and Sunshine Coast, were major sponsors while Noosa remained at the corporate level. It is hoped a change of attitude will surface after the coming elections, and Noosa would join the others allowing the federation to foster and pro-
mote sport on an equal basis. The Coast had 10 athletes go to the 2010 London Olympics with Tewantin’s Brittany Elmslie bringing home gold. Two years later at the Glasgow games, 13 contested – with 11 woman – winning seven gold, plus a silver and bronze for Remy Fairweather. Rio is only six months away and already pole vaulter Alana Boyd and hockey whiz Jodie Kenny are leading the way after booking their seats. Tourism chiefs are ready to start the united promotion aimed at the entire Sunshine Coast in the 2018 lead-up, but the councils must agree to work together as the sports awards did last week. Coleman push for change WITH just under two months to go for council elections, another candidate has thrown his hat into the ring. Long-term local Ken Coleman launched his campaign on Saturday 30 January at Zabe Espresso Bar with an array of supporters, novelty cars and swinging tunes to spread his message loud and clear. Mr Coleman said he decided to run for council because he “was sick and tired of hearing this council say the word “no” and wanted to see more flexibility, forward thinking and “maybe even a little visionary” thinking by a new council. “I am worried that the beautiful, vibrant, enthusiastic place which attracted us as being perfect to raise a family and run a business, has begun
to stagnate and become obsessed with not changing anything for fear of making things worse,” Mr Coleman said. “I want to bring positive attitudes and positive actions back to council.” “I want positive outlooks for business and for families, and I want to make Noosa great again.” “We can do it without destroying our green heritage, and we can finally make the Biosphere a working reality.” Mr Coleman said he was “annoyed” at the non-consistent requirements placed on small business owners across the region and wanted to see more balance in Noosa.
“I see small business owners all across Noosa and the hinterland, struggling to meet the requirements of a rigid and non-negotiable Town Plan, while other areas of governance are so vague and misty, that no-one is sure what they do,” he said. “Noosa has lost its balance and needs to regain it.” “I want to see Noosa return to being the jewel in the crown of the Sunshine Coast and with positive attitudes, fresh ideas, and new faces in council, there is no reason that we can’t all prosper a little bit more, while retaining, and improving the natural paradise we are so fortunate to call home.”

State Government silences community: White GREENS Party council hopeful Aaron White said he was concerned community members would be silenced if the State Government’s proposed changes to the public notification process went through. Mr White said planning rules allowed communities to have their say on development, and this was undermined by State Government changes to the public notification process. The proposed new rules, according to Mr White, would reduce the period of time allowed for public notification and would be at the developers’ discretion as to when community feedback occurs during an application.
Mr White also said there was a possibility that developers might no longer have to advertise significant proposals in local newspapers. Currently, applicants are required to notify the public of a proposed development by publishing a notice in relevant newspapers, placing a notification on the subject land and distributing notifications to the owners of all adjoining lands. The Queensland Government website states the purpose of public notification processes is to inform the community and relevant stakeholders of the proposal and to give them the opportunity to make submissions that must be taken into account before the application is decided.
Aaron White said changes to the public notification process by the state government will affect Noosa. Deputy Premier Jackie Trad said the planning reform meant a more efficient system, but didn't necessarily reduce the role of the local community. “We believe that planning reform
can deliver a more efficient system that supports investment and jobs, but don’t believe this must come at the expense of community participation or the role of local government," she said. Mr White has lodged a submission to State Government on behalf of the Greens, objecting to the Draft Planning Instrument, which he says diminishes the opportunity for communities to have their say on planning. “They are cutting a five-stage process down to three and overall the goal posts are being moved heavily in favour of industry, all at the expense of our fundamental right to object to inappropriate development,” Mr White said.
Jackson slams council approach COUNCIL candidate Ingrid Jackson has slammed the Noosa Council for being too tough on local business owners. The Noosa Council issued a warning last week to businesses along the Noosa River to stay within designated leased areas or face potential confiscation of property. Ms Jackson said councillors should exercise more discretion when applying rules to community and business activities “that do not present a significant encroachment on the public”. “The council must give effect to the rules, but recognise that its duties go beyond the rules,” Ms Jackson said. Ms Jackson said the council also had a responsibility to the community and the Gympie Terrace coffee concessions’ use of adjacent land for casual seating was such a case. “Some situations are more different, subtle and complex than a set of rules was designed to address,” she said. “There does not appear to be public inconvenience from the riverside cafes’ use of these small patches of land.” “In fact, in a leisure precinct of a major tourist town, they provide a public benefit.” Ms Jackson said if a rule was seen as unreasonable, unfair or unnecessary, it should be looked at with a view to change. “In its application, there should be initial flexibility,” she said. “As well as applying the rule, the council should look for a mutually agreeable solution not a blanket shutout.”

Art’s open for entries LOVERS of art are happy to hear the 2016 Noosa Art Award entry deadline has been bumped to midnight on Valentine’s Day 14 February. Noosa Regional Gallery director Nina Shadforth said a number of applications had been received so far from local artists and she was excited to see all of this year’s entries. “I’d love to see some really mixed media contemporary works on the wall and see people stretch the theme to its limit. You often see quite literal interpretations, but I love seeing how far people can take it,” she said. LIFE membership is an honour not bestowed on many, but for a local builder the unlikely honour hits the nail right on the head. Local builder Damien Davidson spends his days building homes, surfing with mates and skateboarding with his children all the while quietly giving back to his community by carrying out the recent renovations on the Noosa Arts Theatre. Noosa Arts Theatre’s Liza Park honoured Damien with a special presentation for his contribution to the theatre by making him a life member, one of only 36 people since 1974 to receive the accolade. The accolade is even more special as Damien is not a Noosa Arts Theatre member, but Liza said both he and his team exceeded expectations in all aspects of the Noosa Arts Theatre renovations. “This lifetime membership to Damien recognises his high degree of integrity, honesty, commitment, quality of work and sense of humour,” Liza said. “Both the theatre committee and the wider

Watch out for asset test changes TIME is ticking by, with only 11 months until the last changes in the age pension’s asset test come into play. Holman McGregor Financial Services planner and director Rob McGregor said the changes were expected to result in a reduced age pension for many retirees in the following categories: 1. Couples who are home owners with more than $300,000 and up to $1.1million in assets apart from their family home. 2. Singles who are home owners with more than $250,000 and up to $800,000 in assets apart from their family home. According to Rob, retirees who fit into the above categories can expect to be between about $8000 and $13,000 worse off per year. “A retired couple, home owners, with $800,000 of assessable assets will be around $13,000 worse off per year and a single (home owner) retiree with $500,000 of assessable assets will be around $8000 worse off per year,� he said.
Rob said there were things potential and current retirees could do, but the best action to take was to seek professional help. “You should think carefully and get good information and advice before you do anything,� he said. “Your response should be carefully thought out and fit into your total retirement plan.� “If you do not have a plan, it may be worth getting one and if you do have a plan, it will need reviewing.� If you are thinking about or already enjoying retirement but are concerned about your pension, contact Holman McGregor Financial Services on 5449 7200.

WOMEN are set to rock the stage at the annual Local Women Rock musical event in celebration of the 2016 International Women’s Day. Wonderful and talented local women are busy rehearsing for the biggest women’s event in Noosa set to rock the big stage at The J, Noosa Heads, on Tuesday 8 March. Event organiser Cherry Bright said the event was so successful last year that many people have been begging to have it hosted again this year. Ms Bright said she was excited with the great line-up of female performers this year, with performers aged eight to 78, and is also looking forward to the event being located at the J Theatre. “Some of our favourite entertainers will be on stage including local superstar Michelle Brown and the gorgeous Kitty Kats from Coolum region,” Ms Bright said. Festival makes food the focus THE Noosa Food and Wine Festival will be handed over to a new steering committee following a lack of commercial sponsorship. Noosa Pacific Hotel has decided to step down from its role in running the 2016 Noosa Food and Wine Festival and has facilitated a handover to Tourism Noosa, which will step in to guide a new 2016 event. Noosa Pacific Hotel spokesman
Robert Murray said the decision to step was not an easy one. “This decision has not been taken lightly. We have invested significant funds and energy into creating a new Noosa Food and Wine Festival in 2016 following the events surrounding the festival that was held in 2015,” Mr Murray said. “While we received strong support from local suppliers, in the
short timeframes available we were not able to attract the level of commercial sponsorship we feel was required to deliver the scale of event originally envisaged.” Tourism Noosa’s chairman Steve McPharlin said despite the set-back the event would still go ahead. “Food and wine are an important part of Noosa’s appeal and, while this decision by Noosa Pacific Hotel
is disappointing, the Board of Tourism Noosa want to see a festival continue in 2017 and have subsequently stepped in to facilitate a 2016 event, in conjunction with an event organiser, working with Noosa restaurants,” Mr McPharlin said. “The 2016 event will embrace a new, scaled-down format with events taking place in Noosa restaurants featuring visiting chefs from around

TEST your baking skills and treat yourself to scrumptious strawberry cupcakes which are too good to be true. These cupcakes will fill your kitchen with the smell of sweet indulgence and are guaranteed to become one of your favourite recipes. Ingredients: Strawberry Cupcakes: 1 2/3 cup all-purpose flour. 1/2 tbsp baking powder. 1 tsp baking soda. 1/2 tsp fine sea salt. 4 tbsp ground freeze-dried strawberries (16 grams). 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened, room temperature. 3/4 cup granulated sugar. 2 large eggs, room temperature. 1/2 cup whole milk, room temperature. 5 oz strawberries, pureed and strained. Strawberry Cream Cheese Frosting: 1/2 cup unsalted butter, room temperature. 4 oz cream cheese, room temperature. 4 tbsp (16 grams) ground freeze-dried strawberries, sifted. 2 cups confectioners’ sugar, sifted. Method: Strawberry Cupcakes: 1. Preheat oven to 170 degrees. Line 12 muffin tin with paper liners. Set aside. 2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and ground freeze-dried strawberries. Set aside. 3. Beat together butter and granulated sugar until smooth. Add eggs one at a time and mix until combined. In a small bowl, mix together milk and strawberry puree. 4. Add about a third of the flour mixture into the creamed butter. Mix at low-medium speed. Add half of the milk mixture. Continue to mix until almost combined. Add another third of the flour mixture followed by the rest of the milk mixture. End with

the last third of flour mixture. Continue to mix until batter is smooth and there are no longer any dry streaks of flour left. 5. Divide batter between twelve cupcakes. Bake for 20-24 minutes until cake is done and a toothpick inserted in the centre of a cupcake comes out clean. Let cool in tin for a couple of minutes before unmoulding and let cool completely on wire rack. Let cool to room temperature before frosting. Strawberry Cream Cheese Frosting: 1. In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, cream together butter and cream cheese until smooth. Sift together ground freeze-dried strawberries and confectioners’ sugar. With the mixer on low speed, add sifted ingredients. Once all in, beat at medium speed until frosting is smooth. Transfer frosting to a piping bag fitted with a large star tip. Pipe over cooled cupcakes. Decorate with a sliced strawberry.

No help here SORRY Steve Hall, you have not the slightest chance of getting the council to give you any help with noisy cycads that were not there when you built 15 years ago. We have been battling the council for four years regarding the flying foxes at Wallace Park that were not here seven years ago when we came here. According to the council, and others, we have to learn to live with nature even if we can’t go outside because of the noise smell, and mess. Never mind, the council elections are coming up soon! Parking peril OVER the week of Christmas I drove to Noosa Junction bus stop and parked in the car park and took advantage of the free bus service to Hastings Street. After boarding the bus with four kids, surfboards, umbrella and bags – a sight I am sure – we returned after having an amazing and revitalising time at the beach to find a parking ticket on my car. I did not realise that at a main bus terminal there would be a restriction of time – two hours in fact. How does this cater for people who may need to travel further, and rubbing salt further into the wound is that three-quarters of the car park was empty. I get it if there was the demand to utilise that space, but it wasn’t and neither was the car park adjacent. There is all the talk about the congestion to travel into Hastings Street and use the free service, but why bother when you are rewarded with a parking ticket? Also why bother going to shop in Noosa Junction or use any of the facilities when the council restrict the time we can spend there? And we obviously know that the junction traders are suffering after all the closures of different businesses over the years. Very disappointed and think the council needs to review the length of time of parking allowed in some parts of Noosa Junction, especially at the main bus shelter. Sami Howard, Tewantin.

Who’s responsible? FACTS that a lot of Noosa residents may not realise, especially those who are newcomers to the area. Peregian South is part of Sunshine Coast Regional Council area. Peregian Springs is part of Sunshine Coast Regional Council area. Doonan in the main is part of Sunshine Coast Regional Council area – a very small section is in the Noosa Shire Council area. Weyba Downs and Verrierdale are in the Sunshine Coast Regional Council area. Some people assume as these areas are so close to Noosa that they are part of the Noosa Shire Council area, however this is not correct. All of these areas are in Division 9 Sunshine Coast Regional Council. I note that in matters relating in particular to Peregian Springs such as the recent decimation of trees, some people incorrectly assume this is the responsibility of the Noosa Shire Council. This is not correct. The Noosa Shire Council has no control over anything that happens in Peregian Springs – the responsible council is the Sunshine Coast Regional Council. Jo Ball, Noosaville.
Making cents THE Noosa Community Biosphere Association (NCBA) would like to thank our members and residents who participated during the Australia Day weekend at Main Beach for our campaign in support of a cash-for-containers program in Queensland. Many of you braved the traffic, weather and surf to send a clear message to State Parliament that we don’t want Queensland to continue to be the most littered state in Australia. A special thankyou to Cr Joe Jurisevic, Cr Frank Wilkie, Cr Sandy Bolton and Cr Tony Wellington and councillor candidates Brian Stockwell and Aaron White for participating. NCBA has partnered with several other NFP associations who are pushing for a smart container deposit scheme and ban on plastic bags in Queensland. Along with a ban on plastic bags, a cash-for-containers program (10cent deposit on containers) to protect our native fauna, reduce litter on land and in waterways and minimise the costs of waste management, saving council and ratepayers money. How it all began IT IS my understanding that the Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation was formed with eight eminent people selected by the Noosa Council. The foundation obtained $520,000 seed funding from the council and the foundation was to obtain future yearly funds from grants and donations. This has not been the case and council has approved a further funding of $350,000 to the foundation. As a Noosa ratepayer I ask, when will the foundation cease using Noosa Council as a cash cow? The recent comments from the foundation chairman as to the charter of the foundation clearly demonstrates the foundation is out of step with the current UNESCO Biosphere ideals. No means no I FIND it ironic and hypocritical that a group which has historically suffered from discrimination and abuse continues to use bully tactics to get its way. Noosa Council has repeatedly said it will not declare a stance on same-sex marriage. No means no, doesn’t it? For Robin Bristow and his LGBTI group to repeatedly attack and demand from council written support for their cause is not granting council the same freedom of expression that they desire for themselves. I am not opposed to same-sex marriage but I am getting sick of seeing this tantrum being thrown over and over again. Woody Dass, Noosaville.
Matter of choice IF I take my coffee and cake, chairs and a small table onto public land, I am okay to have my refreshments and take in the view without being hassled by council. But, if the local business who I’d like to support provides me with my refreshment, table and chair they can be shut down. What if I prefer the convenience of walk-up service and comfort so as not to have to lug all my own stuff down to the river? Seems that with the town busting with business, the nanny state-of-affairs council just finds ways to curtail a lifestyle which visitors and residents came here to have in the first place. To see more people enjoying our beautiful river should be encouraged. This sort of severe by-the-rules enforcement stifles creativity and entrepreneurship from which new features blossom and attract dollars into our economy. Carol Donovan, Noosaville.
Bats in the belfry THE bat numbers in Wallace Park are now more than ever before. The residents adjacent to Wallace Park are at a loss as to what to do, other than to vote in a totally new council to deal with the problem. The current council voted as one, following their leader, to do nothing about the bat problem, apart from Tony Wellington (and it will give you the measure of the man) who suggested that residents install double-glazed windows and doors to keep out the smell and noise of the bats dangling from their gutters. Residents are kept awake every night by the screeching of bats jostling for places on the branches of trees in Wallace Park, and by the stench that emits from them. Doing nothing about the bats in Wallace Park has caused them to feel safe and secure, and to breed incessantly, and now we have bats hanging over pathways, in trees every-
where, not a good look, but maybe another side of Noosa for tourists to see. The current council has taken a different view to all councils throughout Australia in relation to bats and suburbia, and I suggest that a new council may have better ideas. K.L. Fielden, Tewantin.
It’s simple I RECENTLY sent a query on local priorities on the Biosphere, MunnaPoint, Sunshine Beach schools roadworks and daylight saving to the News. In the past I have queried the waste of $1.5 million of ratepayer’s hard-earned rates on the Seaview Creek unnecessarily incurred repairs due to slackness, now a visual disgrace which could be used for beach parking or even ‘film location’ parking instead of excluding ratepayers this weekend. While I appreciate the courteousness of Cr Wilkie’s comments when Editor and Councillor, for the life of me I cannot believe the waste of $450,000 on the recent school paths/roads. If there’s subsidence of a drain trap – fix that. If kids are crossing the road in heavy traffic, put in a wire fence directing them to lights 200 metres away. If roots of trees are affecting footpaths, pull out the trees and not rip up all the existing kerbing and footpaths when the majority of the shire has none. The monies should have gone to providing a left-turn lane at lights from Sunrise even if it meant taking some of the Micks’ rate-free land; speed humps along Ben Lexcen Drive from Sunrise. I am sick and tired of the waste of my annual $8500 rates which effectively gives me rubbish removal and nothing else behind with capital works. Thank God it means less waste. Biosphere brainchild SEVERAL months ago I asked “how this brainchild (biosphere) is/has made life different for us living in the Noosa Shire?” Apart from a personal rant from a lady, I did not get any reply from the individuals who administer the rate dollar by means of a biosphere trust. As previously stated, Noosa Council has been a flora and fauna sanctuary for some 70 years now. Further to this we have a tree preservation act which has been in place shire wide also for many years. In my 72-year lifetime the trees are green, the grass is green, the flowers pretty and the wildlife numbers still abundant. May I ask the “trustees” of the $1 million shire funded biosphere to please explain exactly what benefit in jobs from the private sector has resulted from this funding ($520K so far, with another half-mill boost over the next three years). I would appreciate the trustees to respond positively, so c’mon trustees, tell us what jobs and benefits we have and will get for our $1 million hard-earned. WITH the stormy and humid weather we have been experiencing over the last week the appearance of our river has certainly changed and for the inexperienced angler this may tend to put them off, the thing is, that a bit of fresh water flow in the river is a good thing. With the salinity levels changing in the river, the bait will tend to make its way to towards the mouth or even head out to the closer reefs. So with this in mind you should be concentrating your efforts toward the river mouth or the area where the clean water from the ocean pushes up on the tide. The river mouth rock walls are a great place to start with mangrove jack, trevally and queenfish all on the chew, bread-and-butter species like whiting and bream are also down toward the mouth. The Frying Pan and the Dog
Beach have seen some quality whiting on worm and yabbies with the bream and other predators taking a liking to live baits and fresh mullet. Woods Bay and the Noosa Sound has also been firing with jack ambushing passing bait as it moves down river. Flathead are also in the deeper parts of the river and are happy to take a well presented soft plastic, brighter colours have been the most successful. Crabs are the other primary objective for a lot of anglers with them out of their muddy holes and walking a well-placed crab pot should see some quality bucks. There are a multitude of different baits being placed in the bottom of pots these days but I have found that fresh mullet has been the most successful. On the offshore scene, thing have been a little quiet with the large swells and the threating weather. Those who did find a
window in the weather were well rewarded, with the closer reefs like Jew Sholes and sunshine Reef both producing. Trout, mori cod and sweetlip where all taken with pilchard and squid doing the job. Pelagics were also on site before the rain with a couple of quality spanish mackerel also landed. With the run off from the creeks and rivers the closer reefs will be a little quieter for pelagics as they prefer the cleaner water. So if the swell and wind drop, a trip out to the Barwon Banks or the Hards will be well worth it. On the beaches, the bigger swells have been great for creating some great gutters and holes. Tailor and jew will be chasing all that bait that has been flushed out of the rivers so a night fish on the new moon is well worth a go, fresh mullet, salted bonito, pilchards and squid are all perfect baits. ditch COOROY COMMUNITY BOWLS COMPETITION in the Bowlers Paradise Local League played on Saturday 24 January resulted in losses for both the men’s and ladies teams, the former played at Mapleton and the latter at Yandina. The Cooroy Club’s committee invites any ex-Noosa members to play at our club as our guests, free of charge, until the end of April at any of the events listed below. Jackpot pairs will commence on Wednesday 3 February, at 1pm. Sponsors’ day, previously Madill’s day, will now be played on the second Friday of the month, at 1pm. The first for 2016 will be at 1pm on Friday 12 February. The social game of High Rollers with teams of three will commence on Thursday 3 February, at 6pm, and continue on a weekly basis for at least three months. We still have room for two more teams. Newcomers are welcome. Please note, the club has changed its usual day for jackpot pairs from Tuesday to Wednesday because the Sports’ Hub will not be opened on that day. – The Marker POMONA BOWLS POMONA bowlers celebrated Australia Day in true Aussie style. The bowlers came in their green/gold/blue colours, lots of flags were flying, and finished the day with a barbecue served with damper, treacle and real butter. Lots of touchers on the green with the reward of a ‘Blinky Bill’ chocolate. Overall winners were Frank Long, Desley O’Neill and Trev Walsh; runnersup were Raelene Goodall, Shane Luppi and Charlie Dewhirst; third prize went to Elizabeth Dewhirst, Rob Roebuck and Rick Goulding. Wednesday ladies: Only a small number of stalwarts, with the win going to Desley O’Neill, Linda MacDougall and Nancy Homer. Friday twilight bowls: 22 dedicated bowlers took to the green, however after four or five ends – with the lightning zapping all around – Charlie rang the bell to bring them into the safety of the clubhouse. FOLLOWING their good form in the Australia Day Weekend surf carnivals in Sydney, the Noosa masters, reserve grade and under-23 boat crews will this Saturday contest the final round of the Navy Series. This carnival will also be the final hit-out for boat crews before officials announce the crews to represent Queensland in the coming interstate series. We wish them well. With the school holidays now over, the Nippers are back on the beaches and progress this season has been good. With the Noosa and Peregian Nippers working in close harmony, a total of some 610 little people are now congregating on our two beaches. This is their best membership ever. It just goes to show a lot of people must be doing something right. Keeping up the momentum, our under-8s and under-10s, will travel to Redcliffe to contest the branch championships and the following weekend they will be at Dickey Beach to take part in the state titles. Sunshine Beach is also expected to once again field a strong team. With all our local Nipper clubs now in a strong position regarding membership, the future of life saving in the Noosa area certainly looks solid. While thinking of our future, good to see that the state-wide con-
ference Have Your Say has been set down for 12 to 14 August at Twin Waters. The importance of these gettogethers cannot be emphasized enough as it keeps all clubs fully informed on latest developments, but most important of all, as the name says, it gives our clubbies the opportunity to stand up and have their say. In all rescue organisations
this is absolutely vital. On the weekend, our competitors were in action at a carnival at Maroochydore. With teams coming from the Sunshine and Gold Coast clubs, the competition was first class. For Noosa, the boys did well in the blue ribbon event the Taplin with the Open team finishing third and the under-17s winning.
In the swims, Cooper Williams continued to perform well by winning the under-17 surf race. In the ladies iron woman, Noosa girls Jordan Mercer and Kirsty Higgison had to settle for the two minor placings when Northcliffs Harriet Brown put in a great performance to finish in first place. Once again the Sunshine Beach team has shown incredible strength
in their junior divisions; the under14s, under-15s and under-19s. In the boys events they came home with medals in the board, iron man, swim, and team events. For the girls it was the same. Could be a big year for both Noosa and Sunshine juniors at the national titles. On Friday night at the annual Sunshine Coast 2015 Sportstar of the Year Awards, retired dual Rugby League and Rugby Union International Michael O’Connor was named as one of this year's Legends of Sport. In his acceptance speech, O’Connor added his weight to the ever-increasing number of sportsmen and women who are speaking out loud and clear in support of the One Punch Can Kill Campaign. When during his speech he made the remark “it’s cowardly”, he was spot on. Now I am proud to announce that all of us in the Sunshine Coast Surf Lifesaving movement are also raising our voices in protest. During last weekend’s s carnival at Maroochydore the program was stopped, and several hundred competitors raised their hands, on which were written a message to stop this violence. President of the Noosa Club David James and Sunshine Beach Club captain Scott Summers have added their support. “This has got to be stopped,” Summers said. “It is just not on.” Now, from the powers that be, no more talking we want action. That young Mr Miller was one of ours.

THIS column comes to you from the land of the long white cloud, for the second time in a few months, albeit briefly. More precisely it comes to you from the stinking hot Murray Linton Room of the Princes Gate Hotel in downtown Rotorua, where we have lobbed in the late afternoon to get a bit closer to an early flight out of Auckland. It seemed like a good idea at the time but I’d forgotten about the sulphurous stench that hangs over the capital of Maori culture. Of course every cloud has a silver lining and sufferers of abominable flatulence, such as your correspondent, can walk the streets unleashing unnoticed. But back to the Princes Gate, which was recommended by a friend as we were leaving the scene of the 60th, a beachside bach on Hawkes Bay. It’s kind of poncey mock-Victorian but in a nice way, except for the heat. It’s not a warm evening, but I’m sitting at a desk in a postage-stamp room with no AC and a fan at head level, and I’m sweating like a pig, which again is a cloud with a silver lining, I suppose, since I need to expel the toxins of an extended weekend of great local wines and French champagne, paired with the bounty of the bay, succulent crays and kingfish. Oh, and we surfed, how we surfed! Beautiful fast-running beachies right in front of the house, just a few mates in the water for hours on end. I can’t think of a much better way to mark the passage into old age than a house party with good mates, good waves and the girls bringing the chilly bin (see, it’s catchy) of sundowners onto the sand as the shadows get long. And then, of course, there is the theatre of dinner. The birthday boy, a Kiwi, has made his life in France for more than 30 years, a rugbyman, surfer and bon vivant extraordinaire, so we eat late, very late, and drink well, very well. Bon anniversaire, Kahuna!
Lester Brien, author, raconteur, in recent years. alty, but that was kind of typical of the wonderful mad bastard. In the ’80s he bought Bloomfield Lodge at a wild rivermouth on the Daintree Track. It was a rundown fishing resort and it attracted some wild-eyed and rundown fishos, myself included. We had some insane expeditions in a beat-up punt, Lester lathered in sunscreen and cackling maniacally as we enjoyed beers and multiple hook-ups. But things went south and Lester tried to pull a game-changer in Southern Asia, arrested at Sydney Airport in possibly the worst kept secret in the history of drug-running. When he was in Long Bay Jail, Tony “Captain Goodvibes” Edwards and I pulled some money together and bought him a computer and told him to write his stories down. He did, and The Byron Connection was a cult hit. More recently, The Ton Run confirmed his ability as a writer of wit and style. Out of the slammer, Lester started his surf safari business with son Garth, and was soon carting busloads of wide-eyed Euros north
from Sydney’s Central Station on week-long and life-changing psycho-surf expeditioning in a painted (by Captain Goodvibes) bus. I once encountered Lester on New Year’s Eve at Point Plommer, where the surf was pumping. He explained that he had a full bus of backpackers so would probably press on to Crescent Head where they could party without causing too much offence. I suggested he bring them around to our place up the road, a huge estate owned by friends where we were all camped and had organised a party with a band coming down from Crescent. It was one of those awesome nights that lives in the memory. There was some kind of cross-dressing theme and I recall Lester and the backpackers cacking themselves when Shane Stedman and I danced together in drag. It was always a crack-up with Lester. I don’t know anyone who laughed harder at life’s ups and downs, or who thought more deeply about the future of the planet. Wherever you are tonight, old mate, I hope you’re laughing still. You will be sorely missed.

Farewell to surfing’s funniest dude I woke up on my last day at Mahanga Beach to the kind of message you always dread. While celebrating with one bestie, another cherished friend had passed away. Lester Brien was battling brain cancer and we knew he was not with us for the long term, but it was still difficult to imagine that crazy cackle would no longer be heard. I first met Lester in the early 1970s when he had transitioned from being one of Sydney’s hottest surfers through the ’60s to a much-indemand hip lawyer in Byron Bay and a standout performer at Broken Head and Lennox. Then it all went tits-up for Lester when some very high profile surfer clients got busted on drug offences and he refused to allow the prosecution access to client records. LB did time for perjury and got disbarred for his loy-

THE Noosa Eagles are ready to take the year by storm as they spread their wings and invite juniors who would like to experience what it’s like to soar high above the rest. The Noosa Eagle’s sign on day is being held this Saturday 6 February at the Good Shepherd College fields, Walter Hay Drive, Noosaville, from 9am to noon. Noosa Eagles publicity officer Peta Holmes said the club was committed to making sure everyone had a great time on and off the field. “Noosa Eagles is committed to getting everyone on the field,” Peta said. “There is a great team spirit with plenty of team bonding. It’s an awesome club with lots of parent involvement and camaraderie.”

Nippers pouring it on By GEN FRASER WET weather didn’t dampen the spirits of the Noosa Nippers on a near empty Main Beach on the weekend. The skies opened up and so did the parent’s umbrellas. Despite this, the Nippers took advantage of the small waves and calmer conditions to practice boards and some longer swims. The under-10s showed
how far they had come since September completing a miniironman between Main Beach and Little Cove. Their age managers and water safety volunteers were right alongside them offering moral support and practical advice. A big thanks to these volunteers for literally doing the extra mile this week. Nippers have a big weekend coming up with a team heading off to the Nippers un-
der-8 to under-10 branch titles at Redcliffe this Saturday. Good luck to them as they fly the flag for Noosa against clubs from across south-east Queensland. Locals should take advantage of the last month of summer before the Easter crowds arrive in March. And remember to tuck in to the Nippers breakfast barbecue - everything on the menu comes with a free smile.

With branch and states just around the corner, training ramps up as we work to cement the great competitive reputation of this high performing club.

WITH a great opportunity to mix it up with the biggest and best from both the Sunshine Coast as well as a few from the Gold Coast, the Murphy Builders Classic at Maroochydore last weekend had not just the region's best but with the likes of Shannon Eckstein and Jordan Mercer, it was a field of champions. On Saturday, the Sunshine under-14s and under-15s proved once again that they were the group to beat, with outstanding performances in the boys' events that included a complete sweep of all placing in the under-15 individual board race with a remarkable first to Maverick Pettigrove, second to Jonty Redwood and third to “Spud” Brewer. Max Moore won the individual board race in the under-14 age group, continuing his dominance of this gruelling event. On Sunday, more gold was had with the under-14 board relay - consisting of Max Moore, Max Smallman and the mighty Flynn Ross - winning the board team event by at least 100m after leading at every change.
