PAKO environs

Pako a thriving hub BY ELISE BLACH IT’S easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of the shops and cafes found along Pako and surrounding areas - but if you take some time to venture down further to the Barwon River you might just find your new favourite spot. From footpaths running through parks and wetlands to cafes and rowing clubs you are sure to find something that tickles your fancy. Originally an important source of food for the Wathaurong people as well as a place for European settlement, the area is rich in history. Take a walk along the tracks surrounding Buckley Falls, where the escaped convict William Buckley once befriended the local Wathaurong tribe or walk around Balyang Sanctuary where Captain Fyans first built his house. Whether you are a jogger, bike rider or dog walker, you are sure to come across over 100 species of birds not to mention the beautiful native flora and fauna. If you are really lucky you might spot a platypus or the occasional swamp wallaby. If you want to get the kids out of the house, the Barwon River sports a lot of parks, picnic areas and playgrounds. Take a walk, stop off for a picnic lunch and feed the ducks. The Barwon Valley Park adventure playground is sure to get the kids out and about all while you can soak in the beautiful

surroundings. There are also some designated barbecue areas which is a great opportunity to get a couple of friends together and have a kick of the footy. For sporty types there is an abundance of activities to do right in Geelong’s backyard. The Barwon River has a long history with rowing from the late 1800s to the present day. Further up the river you will find a canoe crossing, which are perfect conditions to take a paddle downstream and take in the magnificent scenery. The Barwon River also offers designated areas for water skiing if you are looking for something a bit more fast paced - or if you are looking for a leisurely weekend activity why not try a hit of golf or go fishing alongside the river. Whether you are the competitive type or a weekend dabbler you are sure to find an activity that suits you. If you’re still craving your coffee and dining experience then why not head down to Barwon Edge Boathouse located on the river banks. Catch up with friends and family and soak in the beautiful scenery. They offer breakfast, lunch and dinner with an extensive range of wines and delicious menu. It’s amazing, we are so lucky to have such a diverse range of activities within the area. We have the best of both worlds where the city meets the water and the best thing is most of it is cost free and a stone’s throw from your home.

to inject close to $8.5 million dollars into the local economy just over the course of the day itself. Pako Festa offers a unique opportunity for those 100,000plus participants to socialise and celebrate in an arena of ethnic diversity and harmony, as well as gaining an appreciation of the great variety of artistic

and cultural expression within Geelong’s multicultural community. The Pako Festa Street Parade starts at 11am, Saturday 27 February, embodies Colour, Culture and Celebration and is one of the most important events at Pako Festa! Encapsulating the very essence of our nation - diversity,

dynamism and colorfulness, and above all else co-operation, community inter-connectedness, creativity and the promotion of our humanity - Pako Festa sends a strong message in these troubled times in which we live: our preparedness to interact with, work with and treat each other with dignity and respect demolishing the walls of

division and conflicts; bringing everyone together in a spirit of understanding, acceptance and celebration of life itself. A very important aspect of Pako Festa lies in its provision for the CALD communities to continue to affirm and honour their contributions to Pako Festa over its 34-year history. THE Pako Festa, now in its 34th year, is Geelong West’s much loved, award-winning, free, annual community arts festival - the biggest of its kind in Australia. Managed by Diversitat and held on the last weekend of February in Pakington Street, Geelong West, ‘the multicultural heart of Geelong’, it incorporates an extravagant street parade featuring around 90 floats and hundreds of performers representing 45 affiliated ethnic communities and around 60 other community groups and organisations. The street is lined with stalls selling traditional foods and arts and crafts, and six separate stages in the precinct offer performances of music and dance as well as interactive workshops and exhibitions. Pako Festa has become Victoria’s premier multicultural event - attended by well over 100,000 people in each of the last three years - and estimated

AFTER three years in their cute store opposite the French Bakery, just down from the Petrel Hotel, quirk collective has moved half a block down the road into the vibrant Pakington Village - keeping the likes of Benning, Tulip and Mr Miller company. For those who have yet to experience the delight that is quirk, the ethos of their space is to provide a wide range of indie design items that are made, or dreamed up by creatives who are either local to the area, or who have an ethical, or sustainable focus. Most of their items are limited edition, or one-offs and range from clothing and jewellery, through to homewares and art. Over the last three years they’ve collected a stunning array of treats, including beautiful bags, wallets and jewellery from local brands Oktoberdee and Harlequin Belle, handmade candles from up and coming Geelong brand Butcher and Baker Co., beautiful ceramics from Melbourne potter Wolf and Mishka, handmade porcelain clocks and vessels from the Netherlands and the ever popular watch and wallet range from Sydney siders The Horse, just to name a few.

Salon has a loyal following

The team from Salon Eve: Kate McRorie, Barbara Ferrante, Ashleigh Ricciardi and Vicky Polyzos. 148932

SALON Eve is a small boutique hair salon located in Manifold Heights on busy Shannon Avenue, and has a team of five women - three senior hairdressers and two apprentices. Barb Ferrante, the owner and founder of Salon Eve, has been in the industry for a decade and opened Salon Eve three years ago, on 27 December. “It was very much the busiest time of year but I kind of didn’t have a choice at the time so, ready or not, I opened Salon Eve with a back room full of boxes of colour and other stuff and worked out of boxes until Madi and I set the salon up properly in the new year,” she said. Salon Eve has four other hairdressers involved - senior hairdressers Madi Pender,Vicky Polyzos and Barbara Ferrante and two apprentices - Kate McRorie and Ashleigh Ricciardi. “We all just all started out in the hair industry apart from Kate who started as a qualified make-up artist and domestic painter and interior design chick,” Barb said. “I chose this area because I have developed a clientele here and it suited me to stay in this area as I didn’t want to lose clientele from moving in to

another suburb. Most of our clientele are from this area but we do have some long-distance travellers from Melbourne, the Yarra Valley, Point Lonsdale, Portarlington, Werribee and the Surf Coast. We feel very privileged to have these loyal people who travel to see us.” Salon Eve is growing slowly but steadily and has just started a loyalty program for its customers, which has proven to be very popular. Salon Eve sponsors a lot of primary school fetes and community events, where it donates some of its services. “It gives us a chance to help the community and also a great invitation for those who have not experienced Salon Eve to meet us and experience our services,” Barb said. Away from the salon, Barb’s passion is making terrariums. “I just recently discovered I may have a hidden talent and I enjoy helping people with their interior design when redecorating,” she said. Check out Salon Eve at www. saloneve.com.au, which also has an online booking service 24/7. The salon also has social media outlets such as Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

DO YOU OR DOES YOUR PARTNER SNORE? A touchy subject for some, but snoring can be a real issue and one of the main symptoms of the more serious condition sleep apnoea. A massive 5% of all people have sleep apnoea and of these, 8 out of 10 people are undiagnosed. Evidence suggests that if left untreated sleep apnoea can lead to high blood pressure, heart disease, depression, migraines and stroke. It is also thought that untreated sleep apnoea may cut 10-15 years off your life. This is disappointing, given that it is readily diagnosable and treatable. Gone are the days when you needed to stay over night in a hospital setting to test for sleep apnoea. You can now do a study in your own bed with a small manageable device. Come and see us and have a chat about an at home sleep study, we have very short waiting times and you will get the results back in less than 10 days. My friendly staff and I have been trained to help you along your journey with sleep apnoea and are committed to helping you find the solution that suits you. For those of you who have already been diagnosed and have a CPAP machine we are having a free clean and check day on the 4th February. This involves a clean of your mask and machine as well as a pressure check and a tubing and filter check. We can also download data from your Philips machine to check on your progress. Please give us a call to make a booking for this service. We are also having a mask sale for the month of February with a massive 50% off selected masks and 20% off our standard Philips masks, so if you’re in need of an update this is the time to come in. We are also happy to order Resmed and Fisher and Paykal masks. Give me a call anytime to discuss anything sleep apnoea related, from diagnosis, trials, treatment and supplies. We will be able to help. Erin Managing Pharmacist Community Care Chemist Geelong West

Interior of Newtown Event Centre. 146699

BYO imagination IMAGINATION meets almost no bounds at Newtown Event Centre, one of Geelong’s newest reception venues. The modern facilities are a blank canvas for the imaginative to paint their own event picture, with the function becoming a true reflection of their personality. Venue manager Brian Mudge says the space is entirely versatile. “We adapt our space to your event, instead of you being forced to fit in with the restrictions of the venue,” Brian says. “We’ve created very different wedding themes, from a space age

setting to the cornucopia of a Roman festival, complete with fruit laden tables.” The flexibility of the space means business and corporate events can be just as easily accommodated, ideal for seminars, conferences, exhibitions and training days. Newtown Event Centre offers a parkland vista across Newtown’s Elderslie Reserve, with plenty of offstreet and on-street parking. With complete catering facilities Newtown Event Centre offers full seated dining for 160, finger food for

cocktail parties up to 280 or light snacks for corporate events in theatrestyle seating to 150. Brian and his friendly staff are on hand to present first-class food and wine in the fully licensed venue. There’s full wheelchair access and the conference rooms are also available for day or night hire, including smaller, more intimate events. Newtown Event Centre is on the corner of Raith Terrace and Read Street, Newtown. Phone Brian Mudge on 0447 770 648 or email info@ newtowneventcentre.com.au

It’s thrills on wheels With the Geelong’s inline hockey season starting up again, Rollerway Skate Centre’s RAUL APARICIO takes a look at some of the centre’s little champions. I’M sure you’ve heard of the Mighty Ducks, but here at Rollerway we have the Mini Ducks with Mighty Pucks. We can always brag about having Australia’s largest independent roller hockey league or how we’ve had multiple Geelong players represent Victoria and Australia. But it’s the little people who win hearts. So who are these ‘Mini Ducks’? We have Lily, 4; Dean, 4; Abbey, 5; Gracie, 5; Harley, 6; and Cody, also 6. Astoundingly, most of these young hockey people have been playing for years - some since they were only two. All the kids have great

potential and we often underestimate their abilities. Given the opportunity they can do some amazing things, and develop agility, fitness and co-ordination. The beauty about having such a large club in Geelong is that we have so many options for boys and girls, and men and women. Rollerway’s hockey players have filled spots in every division in national and international competition, from the under-9 teams, to the over-50s. When the Australian Inline Hockey titles came to The Arena in 2014 we had 42 people playing, more than all the players on the NSW squad. There are also some other

amazing ‘mini’ people, such as Ashlie Aparicio, 22, weighing in at 50kg and about 160cm tall. She’s played for the Victorian 21s men’s team and captained one of the Australian women’s teams. She’s also a state and national coach despite her age. There are many other

unsung heroes in the 30-plus teams at the centre, from the mums and dads who either play themselves, or just support their kids. There are the older guys and gals who soldier on despite the tyranny of time, and mates who just like to battle it out each week.

Harley and Dean prove you’re never too young to enjoy sport.

Do you suffer from BACK PAIN?

THE MIDNIGHT WATCH By David Dyer JUST after midnight on 15 April, 1912, the SS Californian saw eight distress rockets fired from the sinking Titanic, but unfathomably did nothing. What went wrong? One of the most famous catastrophes of the 20th century, the sinking of the Titanic continues to fascinate to this day. Much less well known is the story of the ship that could have gone to her aid but didn’t. The Midnight Watch is a dramatic, compelling novel that brings to life what happened on this mysterious ship during those fateful hours. Why didn’t the Californian’s Captain Lord come out of his cabin? Why didn’t Second Officer Herbert

Significant pain can disrupt normal life and movement – often creating long term dysfunction and ongoing pain. Your dysfunction must be treated to regain optimal function so that you can start to both live and exercise without pain. Hands on therapy to address your body’s dysfunction may be what you have been missing?

Stone wake the wireless operator? How could two such experienced men fail to act? And why did

no one save the Sage family? Starting with this historical incident, David

Dyer has created an unforgettable character in John Steadman, a reporter for the Boston American. Steadman knows there’s another story lurking behind the official one being touted by Captain Lord and Herbert Stone. His determination to uncover it is driven not only by the 1500 who went to their deaths in those icy waters, but by the loss of his own baby son years earlier. Steadman must either find redemption in the Titanic’s tragedy, or lose himself. Highly anticipated both here and in the UK and the US, The Midnight Watch is at once a heartstopping mystery and a deeply knowing novel about the frailty of men, the strength of women, the capriciousness of fate and the price of loyalty.

THE LUNCHBOX BOOK

PUTTING THE MONKEYS TO BED

By Kate Riordan

By Dorling Kindersley

IT’S the summer of 1933 and Alice Eveleigh has arrived at Fiercombe Manor in disgrace. Hiding her shame in this isolated house concealed within a Gloucestershire valley in the care of housekeeper, Mrs Jelphs, Alice soon begins to sense that something isn’t quite right within the walls of this beautiful manor for one thing she is being watched ... There are secrets at Fiercombe that those who remain there are determined to keep. Tragedy haunts the empty rooms and foreboding hangs heavy in the stifling heat. Traces of the previous lady of the manor, Elizabeth Stanton, are everywhere, and Alice discovers Elizabeth’s life eerily mirrors the path she herself is on. The past is set to repeat its sorrows, and with devastating consequences.

By Gennifer Choldenko and Jack Davis SAM is never ready to go to sleep at bedtime. There are always more questions to ask Mama, more books to read ... not to mention the monkeys! Sam’s rambunctious trio of toy monkeys would much rather jump on the bed and make up songs about ping pong than go to sleep. Eventually Sam wants to go to sleep. But how will he ever get the monkeys to settle down? This story’s silly monkey mayhem also includes a calming bedtime routine that really works.

NO GRAIN, NO PAIN: A 30DAY DIET FOR ELIMINATING THE ROOT CAUSE OF CHRONIC PAIN By Peter Osborne DR PETER Osborne, a groundbreaking authority on gluten sensitivity and food allergies, has found that grains, even so-called safe grains like corn and rice, can wreak havoc on the body by causing tissue inflammation, creating vitamin and mineral deficiencies, and triggering an auto-immune response. No Grain, No Pain offers the tools you need to eliminate the hidden sources of grain and other inflammatory agents in your diet to improve your health. No Grain, No Pain includes a clear examination of the science behind the program, a day-by-day meal plan to make the transition to a grain-free diet easier, dozens of delicious recipes, and valuable resources to support your grain-free lifestyle for the long haul.

Warm and hearty BY ALLIRA POTTER HELLO foodies, another month has flown by and I landed myself down at Newtown Provedore ... a hidden little gem along Pakington Street’s river end. This cafe boasts a small deli, beautiful Genovese coffee and homemade food. Jim and his wife Pam are the owner/operators and I sat down with Jim who could talk my ear off at how much he loves what he does. Throughout the conversation he talked about community and how he has built up Newtown Provedore to get it where it is today. From making sure that customers are greeted in a way that makes them feel like they are visiting a relative. The food is just as welcoming, with homemade sandwiches, salads and breakfast options. On this occasion, we sat down to have a frittata with house-made pasta salad and smashed avocado with feta, drizzled with honey balsamic. The frittata was hearty and filling for a vegetarian option with plenty of vegetables inside. With it was the chicken pasta salad which was seasoned well and not too heavy. The smashed avocado was the favourite, a huge helping of avocadoes on top of some delicious noisette (Melbourne French

bakery) seeded bread with chunks of fetta mixed through it then drizzled with the most amazing honey balsamic dressing. Both of these dishes were so filling we couldn’t eat another thing, not to mention the food is very affordable - all under $30 including drinks. The menu at Newtown Provedore consists of hearty homemade food, with lots of take-away options. You will find breakfast is generally served throughout the day as well as the fridge being full of plenty of homemade sandwiches and salads. Jim told me they generally have the same salads every day as they want to keep a consistency with customers, they can be served on their own or as a side. The breakfast menu consists of the usual yummy fare - bacon, eggs, tomato on toast and other delicious foods. Inside you will find a small delicatessen filled with cold meats and cheeses, as well as products locally sourced and imported. The cake cabinet boasts an array of cakes including gluten free. There is something here for everyone, including hot and cold drinks. We loved Newtown Provedore and cannot wait to head back there.
