COMMUTERS on the Pakenham line are subjected to some of the worst overcrowding on the network, with morning peak-hour trains being recorded carrying more than 400 passengers above their official capacity. Data released by the Victorian Greens to the Pakenham News this week reveals the results of a four-day survey conducted in May which counted the number of passengers on each train between 7am and 9am. Average loading across the Pakenham, Dandenong and Cranbourne lines was 855 passengers - 57 more than the 798 that Metro’s trains are designed to carry. The highest recorded count on the Pakenham line was 1236 passengers crammed into the 8.27am service from Pakenham on the third day of the survey. The survey shows that the situation is getting worse on the three lines which gained an extra 4454 passengers between the 2014 and 2015 surveys and had only extra service added to meet demand. The data also revealed the added pressure that cancellations put on existing services. On the third day of the survey, both the 8.10am from Cranbourne and the 8.20am from Pakenham were cancelled, pushing 10 of the 13 remaining services over capacity.

Passenger numbers are calculated at Caulfield station where the Dandenong, Pakenham and Cranbourne lines join with the Frankston line. Gembrook MP Brad Battin said on Wednesday morning (27 January) that the government had failed commuters in the growth corridor. “Daniel Andrew ripped up the $30 million contract for the $2.5 billion upgrade of the Pakenham-Cranbourne railway line but has failed to offer any alternative solution for commuters,” he said. “It is blatantly clear that the south-east is growing and we desperately need investment in infrastructure to serve our growing population.” Despite the planned removal of 14 crossings on the Pakenham-Cranbourne line, Mr Battin said more needs to be done. “Daniel Andrews needs to stop ignoring the south-east and fund a major upgrade of the Pakenham-Cranbourne railway line before this overcrowding becomes even worse.” Services included in the survey were the 7.59am, 8.06am, 8.20am, 8.27am, 8.36am and 8.50am from Pakenham; the 8.03am, 8.18am and 8.32am from Dandenong, the 8.10am, 8.24am, 8.43am and 8.56am from Cranbourne; and the 8.45 and 8.58am from Westall.

Old favourites By LACHLAN MOORHEAD AS THE 91-year-old Berwick woman played the national anthem on her accordion, the Australian flag was raised into the soft breeze. Many older Australians gathered in the beautiful grounds of the Aveo Edrington Park Retirement Village, in Berwick, to celebrate their country and watch the national flag rise towards the sky as Rodney Chalk, 91, played Advance Australia Fair. The flag was raised by the Residents Committee chairman Brian Joyce and La Trobe MP Jason Wood. “You come today to Edrington retirement village and you meet the senior Australians and realise they’ve made Australia the place it is,” Mr Wood said. “They’ve fought in wars to give us freedoms and what I also love about today, you see people wearing the Australian flag and they’re so proud. “In some ways we’re the lucky country but it hasn’t just come through luck itself, it’s actually come through hard work and making the most of our opportunities. “I haven’t been here before but I took up the offer and one of the reasons I specifically came here is to thank the older Australians for everything they’ve done for this country.” After the flag raising the residents and guests walked over to a special tree, planted by Harry Dickson in honour of Australia Day. Mr Joyce, who has only recently taken over as Residents Committee chairman, said he was very excited to oversee the event and help residents and guests celebrate Australia Day.

For example my mother, she’s originally from China and I still remember growing up as a kid, that country was so, so poor. “We travel a lot and every time we go overseas, as soon as we land back in Australia we’re just so glad. It’s a

People are very cultured, and there’s people from all over the world so they’re very worldly, very aware of the outside world around them. “Obviously that’sv one of the reasons we appreciate how lucky we are because we are very much aware what’s going on in the rest of the world. “I love it here.”

Medics hit PARAMEDICS were the target of petty thieves while they were out on duty. Between 1.20am and 4am on Sunday 25 January, their base in Main Street, Pakenham, was targeted by the raiders who stole two mobile phone charges. Police said that nothing else appeared to have been stolen and there was no sign of forced entry.

Child raiders CHILDREN are being blamed for a daytime break-in at a Pakenham primary school. Between 4pm and 5pm on Wednesday 20 January, the raiders smashed their way through a window at Pakenham Hills Primary School. Police said a bottle of wine was found broken and chocolates were stolen.

Everyone does their bit By ANEEKA SIMONIS PAKENHAM Football Club president Steve Moloney said it was the tireless efforts of club volunteers who threw themselves behind countless community campaigns that won the club Cardinia Shire’s Community Organisation of the Year Award. “The whole footy club is to thank,” he said. “Everyone does a little bit in their own way. We are truly blessed

to have our army of volunteers. Without them there would be no Australia Day Award. It’s their award,” he said. The Pakenham Football Club was selected out of six award nominees including Neighbourhood Watch Cardinia, Pakenham Parkrun, WAYSS, Nar Nar Goon and District Playgroup and MidWay. The local club is an active community group, involved in the Pakenham RSL Anzac Day ceremony,

the White Ribbon Foundation, the Motor Neurone Disease Foundation, Beyond Blue and the Zaidee Rainbow Foundation. “It’s not just a place for blokes to get together and have a drink... it’s a lot more than that,” Mr Moloney said. A WOMAN with an outstanding warrant driving along the Pakenham Bypass with a male accomplice was pulled over by police for an alleged petrol drive-off and several other driving offences. Police snagged the pair, each aged in their thirties, soon after the 7-11 service station located on Belgrave-Hallam Road, Hallam, was targeted on Sunday 24 January. Police who intercepted the 31-year-old Bunyip man and 30-year-old Croydon woman also booked them for several driving offences including driving an unregistered vehicle and driving with an expired licence. They were netted by police in a black Holden before the McGregor Road exit on the bypass at 1.40pm. Both were taken into custody and questioned. Police revealed the female offender had an outstanding warrant. Drivers earlier reported the vehicle for reckless driving.

Matt Staple, 24, is the latest rookie at the Hallam CFA - and he's loving every minute of it. 148919 for the job had dreamed of being a firefighter, and he’s no different. “You work so hard for it,” he said. “And you finally get here and it’s like, this is awesome. So you throw everything at it, which can sometimes be a little bit too much, but that’s alright. “The learning curve doesn’t stop from there, it keeps going, which has been fantastic. “You just keep working, it doesn’t stop.”

One of the men he worked with in the Latrobe Valley was Brendan McKay - formerly of the Morwell CFA, now also at Hallam - who is more than a bit of mentor to Matt. “Each brigade’s got its own significant risks,” Brendan said. “Down in the Latrobe Valley the main aim of integrated stations is probably due to the power industry and protecting that asset down there. That’s the main reason we’re down there.

“Up here (Hallam) we’re on the fringe of urban Melbourne and it’s just the call rate that forces permanent staff to be here. “The multitude of calls, the hours the calls are at, it’s a really big drain on the volunteer force and I’d argue, others might argue differently, but I’d argue that it’s pretty hard for them to keep up with it.” The Hallam CFA receives 1800 to 2000 calls a year, around three times what

The Emergency Medical Response (EMR) program has also added to the call rate, with CFA firefighters now called out for medical support and required to administer CPR if they arrive before paramedics. “This job is about bettering yourself over the whole journey,” Brendan said. “Even guys that have been here for 30 years, they’re learning something every shift.”

“IT WAS one hell of a shotgun start.” Literally, it was like walking into hell. It was Matt Staple’s first day on the job as a staff firefighter at the Hallam CFA. He’d been there just five minutes before he was called out to a fully-involved house fire in Doveton. The 24-year-old went inside the burning wreck with his leading firefighter. Inside the building the temperature reached 500 degrees. “You can’t really top a house fire on your first day,” Matt said with a smile. “It’s one of those stories they tell everyone on recruits. Be prepared to get going from the very second you get on the station - so that’s what I did. “The construction of it really insulated it well. It was a pretty hot one. You just focus; I wasn’t freaking out or anything. “You just get in there and think about it later.” Matt may seem young for this line of work but he’s worked more than a little hard to gain the opportunity. Despite a few knock-backs by the CFA as he tried to become an employed member, Matt signed up as a volunteer down in the Latrobe Valley where he honed his craft, before applying again. “They really want to see perseverance,” Matt said. “There weren’t too many in my age group so they just want to make sure you’re the right person. “You could always just say there were people that were better than you at the time. “I didn’t take it too hard. I just got back on the horse and pushed through and got there in the end.” Matt said most people who apply

will see the site cleaned up utilising practices that are safe for neighbours and workers alike. “Upon safe removal, the project will receive a certified clean clearance from an EPA accredited environmental auditor.” A spokeswoman for Worksafe confirmed the organisation would “monitor the removal”. “A licensed asbestos removalist has been engaged by the site manager to remove the material, overseen by an independent hygienist,” the spokeswoman said. “WorkSafe will monitor the removal to ensure it is undertaken in accordance with occupational health and safety laws." THE company developing a Berwick housing estate has assured nearby residents they are working to make the area safe, after asbestos was found at the site. The assurance from Moremac Property Group follows concerns from local residents after the contractor found fragments of asbestos sheeting at the Alira estate on Centre Road, which is still under construction. The EPA, WorkSafe and an industrial hygienist have since been contacted to monitor the area. Local resident Matt George, whose house runs adjacent to the development, raised concern after claiming a tarp used to cover the asbestos had recently blown into his backyard during heavy winds, which he said was then touched by his young son. “I understand it might be minimal but I don’t want this stuff blowing around,” Mr George said. “I’m not anti-development, I just want it attended to.” Mr George also said warning signs and hazard tape hadn’t been made prominent enough at the site. Moremac Property Group Director Bryce Moore said the removal of the sheeting had only recently been approved and would start next week. He said the asbestos sheeting was illegally dumped “many years ago” and had been present on-site ever since.

With reference to the letter in the Cranbourne News (Need For Bunjil, News, 2 July 2015). We refute the statements of the then Mayor Mick Morland. 1. This precinct is an unwanted structure which is being forced on the community without proper funding (only $10 million funded by the Federal Government) without taking into account of where the balance of $115 million will come from? An email received from the Manager Legal Services (Rob Pedder) has stated that under the Local Government Act the council can undertake borrowings to fund its operations or capital works. This funding will eventually fall on ratepayers in future years. Note: An email to the mayor on 16 June 16 asking why was an amount of $35,774,000 for Bunjil Place being budgeted in the Draft Budget? Email from Rob Pedder (Manager Legal Sevices) has said that the estimated construction expenditure is $25.5 million. Why? This is added in the budget and to the rates. All ratepayers are not aware of this being slyly added to the budget for 2015-2016.The ex-mayor, Geoff Ablett has clearly indicated that the cost of this building will not result in rate increases. This is misuse of ratepayers money. 2. Statistics show that the City of Casey has a population of 288,000 and as the mayor (Mick Morland) has said that the council had engaged an independent research firm which conducted a telephone survey of 300 people as well as an analysis of 200 online responses of residents (not all living) in Casey. Eighty two per cent of respondents agreed for a need for a cultural and community precinct in south-east Melbourne. This is a blatant stupidity on the part of council to go ahead with this project with just 82 per cent of the 500 people when Casey has a population of 288,000. When we asked for proof of this survey council was not able to comply. 3. There are three council offices and many libraries operating, surely there is no need for such an extravagant building to be constructed to house new offices and a library. It is a waste of ratepayers' monies. 4. Late last year we had asked the council what the running cost of this precinct. There was no response. Dunstan Girton and Louis Kotsiras, Hampton Park.

The Narre Warren optometrist visited in November as part of an outreach program organised by the Fred Hollows Foundation and Specsavers, where Luke works at its Fountain Gate outlet. During the initiative he assisted in an intensive training program for Pacific Island students in the final week of their Postgraduate Diploma in Eye Care Nursing at The Foundation’s Pacific Eye Institute. “My boss nominated me and I thought I might as well look at the opportunity,” Luke said. “It sounded like a good thing

for me to do.” As part of the program Luke, who studied for five years to become an optometrist, helped train many aspiring eye specialists, many of who were returning to countries where they would be the only eye-care nurse available. “I felt really good about going there and I would’ve liked to be there longer than a week,” he said. “I didn’t feel it was long enough to make a big, big impression.” As well as encountering people who didn’t realise they were overdue for glasses, Luke and the other trainers were also coming face to face with

many people suffering diabetes, which often negatively affects a suffer’s sight. “Even in the nearby countryside, 50 to 60 per cent of people had diabetes,” Luke said. “Many people had problems with their eyes and problems with long-term sight. “And the accessibility of glasses is not common knowledge.” But Luke felt he had an influence on helping these people see better and it’s a gift he would love to pass on again. “I’d definitely do this again, it was worth my while,” he said. “It was a great experience to see what’s happening around the rest of the world.”

BACK in 1980 when he put out a small fire in his backyard, Colin Booth couldn’t have known what the future held. Fast forward 35 years and the 67-year-old was honoured on Tuesday with the Australia Day Fire Service Medal, after three and a half decades of service to the CFA - majority with the Narre Warren brigade. “There was actually another member who lived up where I used to live, I didn’t realise he was in the CFA,” Colin told Star News. “There was a small grassfire at the back of my property, and my neighbour helped me put it out and said I should join the fire brigade. “And I’ve been there ever since.” Colin, who has lived in Narre Warren for the last 26 years, has given his all to the local brigade and continues to do so. A trained fire investigator and a mentor to junior members, Colin was also the catalyst who led to the brigade fundraising for a salvage unit to service the local area. The catering vehicle is now seen as a bench mark for other brigades in Victoria. But from Colin’s perspective, it’s not about individual honours. The Narre Warren brigade is his second family. “To me it’s the best brigade,” he said. “The membership of the brigade is so dedicated to what they want to do and what they’re doing. “Narre Warren is lucky to

It’s a life which led him into the Narre Warren CFA, where he has experienced so much both rewarding moments and tragic. The brigade lost six of its members during the Ash Wednesday fires. “I don’t want to talk about it too much,” Colin said. “It was a hard time for us;

we lost a fair chunk of the brigade.” The spirit of those lost to the Narre Warren CFA has stayed with Colin every day since. It’s their memory he draws on for strength and it’s his compassion which has seen him become so devoted to the group. It’s a brigade he’s a lifemember of, along with his wife, Hazel. And it’s a family he’ll always be there for. “The only way they’re gonna get me out of the brigade is in a pine box,” Colin said, with more than a hint of truth.

A HINO tipper truck was spotted engulfed in flames in Gembrook after it was stolen from a Narre Warren business. Offenders removed a white bobcat from the rear of the vehicle before it was set alight on Launching Place Road, about 5.20am. The truck went missing from Narre WarrenCranbourne Road in Narre Warren, between 7pm on Saturday 23 and 4.30am on Sunday 24 January. Detective Senior Sergeant Rodney Maroney said stolen bobcats were often shipped interstate. “There’s a market for them, when they start occurring we get a few of them,” he said.

A humble, Narre Warren father of two, Linden, has spent more time in the supermarket this month than he has done in 15 years. And it was a newspaper article on struggling drought stricken farmers in northern Victoria that lead him to the shops. “I just read it and thought that’s no good and came out the next day and thought buggar it I better do

something to help them,” said Linden, owner of Cardboard Cartons in Dandenong. “Sometimes you just got to try a bit harder, and once you get outside of Melbourne you see how dry it is,” he said. So he and his 18-year-old son Lachlan piled 16 trolleys worth of toiletries and groceries into a van and drove the seven hours to Dingee and back earlier this month. “We did it all in one day,” Linden said. The items were donated to East

Loddon Community Centre president Leanne Welsh, who started a food bank for 30 farming families under financial strain. And since the delivery Linden and Lachlan have returned to help Dingee volunteers package his generous donation - which took him three hours to buy. “Lachie, I and half a dozen ladies packed up the food ready to be distributed by the Salvos outreach,” Linden said. Both Narre Warren North CFA fire fighters Linden and Lachlan

have vowed they will do it all again. “The delivery came to 70 parcels for families most in need and you don’t have to have a link to the area to be able to help someone,” Linden said. “We don’t have any ties in Dingee but give us two months and we will do another load.” Originally Linden wasn’t keen to have his donation made public but has since changed his mind, in the hope that his efforts will remind others that they, too, can put in an extra 5 per cent.

WINDERMERE is calling for support as its members prepare to embark on their annual trek through the Sumatran jungle later this year. Eight months before people representing the Narre Warren organisation set out on the Trek to Transform Lives - which will run from 7 to 16 October - they have started fund-raising to reach their $3000 target. And they are calling for anyone out there to help their cause. It’s a cause for people like Carla, who with the help of Windermere Child and Family Services was able to save herself and her eight-year-old son from an abusive relationship. “He beat me with a sledgehammer and left me to die on the kitchen floor in front of my eight year old son,” she said. But even when she got out, more challenges lay ahead. Carla was forced to sell her home and if it weren’t for Windermere, she doesn’t know what would have happened. Fortunately, the organisation was able to give Carla and her son access to temporary housing. “There are many Australians out there suffering from neglect, abuse and the kinds of hardship that life sometimes throws at us,” Windermere CEO Lynette Buoy said. “At Windermere, we aim to transform the lives of those who need it most but we need help. “We’re thrilled to launch our Sumatran Trek to Transform Lives because while trekking through jungle won’t necessarily be easy, it is a small taste of the hardships that face the majority of people that we see at Windermere.” With every kilometre completed on the trek, Dr Buoy said, participants will be helping to change lives. “And we’ll be there to support them along the way because their challenge is our challenge,” she said. CASEY residents struggling to afford a computer and monitor now have an option, thanks to Avocare. The ‘Work for the Dole’ activity puts old, dying computers to good use, providing them free to anyone who needs one. Manager at Avocare, Deb Hutton, said it was the first time the learning solutions organisation had run the program and hoped it could continue. “We’re targeting school students and low income families who are going back to school,” Ms Hutton said. “This gives them an opportunity to get a computer for nothing which includes a monitor

and hard drive - the only things they have to buy are a keyboard and mouse.” Casey residents are encouraged to donate computers they no longer use to the program to be restored, cleaned and rebooted for someone in need. “To pick one up we just need to see a healthcare card because we want to make sure we are donating them to the right people, those who are genuinely struggling,” she said. Computers started piling in at Cranbourne Avocare in November and about 30 computers are ready to be donated. Ms Hutton said 18 of the ‘Work for the Dole’ team members decided whether the computer could be used, before

installing new software and testing and tagging all cords. “The great thing about this program is that people can pick up everything they need to make an office or study nook,” Ms Hutton said. “We sell office furniture as well so someone can get an office desk and chair, a filing cabinet as well as a computer.” Ms Hutton suggests people speak with the “Work for the Dole’ team on what computer will best suit them before walking out the door. “Each computer will have different programs on it so one might suit someone better than another,” she said. The program finishes in early April.

All worth the effort By GEORGIA WESTGARTH CRANBOURNE’S Australia Day showcase showed its soft side this year with an underlying message of motivation. Australia Day Ambassador for Cranbourne Dr Christine Durham spoke candidly about her own life struggles, adding an inspirational theme to the annual Australia Day celebrations. After almost losing her life in a car accident, author and former school teacher, Dr Durham officially opened the Balla Balla centre’s Cultural Heritage Oz Day Showcase. Dr Durham told audiences of her discoveries in life and how she truly believes “pigs can fly,” since sustaining an acquired brain injury.

“The impossible can be possible,” she said, adding that Australia Day was the perfect time to reflect on what binds everyone together and about believing in one’s self. This was Dr Durham’s second year as an Australia Day Council Ambassador and one she won’t forget. “Since coming here today to Hampton Park I have learnt so much,” she said, after reading the Mauritian heritage display. A carnival of red, white and blue, the Cranbourne event showed a diverse range of multicultural singers, dancers and speakers and included a free snag and animal farm too. “To see how people celebrate is quite heart-warming and to see all the different flavours of Australia out here today,” Dr Durham said.

A tiger snake latched onto Barbara McDougall’s leg when she went to put her bin out on Wednesday 13 January. “I knew they’d be around but it still gave me the fright of my life,” the Dalray Court resident told Star News. “It didn’t just bite and go. “As I moved the bin out it jumped at me and I didn’t want to touch it. “I tried to shake it off but it wouldn’t let go.” After what “seemed like a long time” the snake let go and Ms McDougall was taken to her GP before being rushed to Dandenong Hospital by a neighbour who heard her calls for help. Ms McDougall has fully recovered from the bite but said her entire court of eight houses is on high alert. “I have lived here 39 years and I’ve seen a few snakes in that time but never heard of anything like this,” she said of the series of attacks. Dalray Court, which backs onto bushland adjacent to Cranbourne racecourse, is also near the Cranbourne Royal Botanic Gardens. And neighbour Shane Burton, who lost his Jack Russell to a tiger snake in December, said he’d like to see the bush

Mr Burton has warned his neighbours to watch where they’re walking and to tidy up their yards. “Over nine years we’ve had four snakes at our home - it seemed to be a lot this time,” he said. Mr Burton’s dog Zeppi died

from a snake bite within six hours, putting a dampener on Christmas and scaring his two other dogs. “I have made some changes to the backyard to prevent snakes getting in but my dogs now wait for me to go outside. Before they used to be out there all the time,” he said. And Mr Burton’s next door neighbour’s dogs, a Jack Russell and Staffordshire bull terrier also recently died from snake bites. “It’s affecting everyone in the court,” he said.

SNAKE Catchers Victoria’s Barry Goldsmith has hit out at claims there is a “snake plague” in Cranbourne after three dogs were killed by snake bites and an elderly woman was bitten by a tiger snake. The incidents all occurred in Dalray Court, Cranbourne, and Mr Goldsmith said it’s humans who are encroaching on what was once snake territory. “There’s a lot of bushland around Cranbourne and there’s not many places for the snakes to go,” he said. “They’re out of space and every time we put up housing or industrial estates or a freeway they have even fewer places to live and are forced to enter people’s properties.” Mr Goldsmith catches snakes throughout the south-east and said this season has been “no different” to any other snake season. “There are fewer snakes now than there ever was but they have fewer places to live. “Over this season I’ve removed 70 snakes from people’s properties in the south-east, which is not unusual,” he said. “It’s all about teaching people how to live with snakes and teaching them to respect the wildlife around us.

“They won’t bite unless they are startled or touched. “The only time the dogs get bitten is when they attack the snakes. “Venom is used by snakes on prey not for selfdefence - it’s illegal to kill snakes and a lot of people get bitten when they try to kill them,” he added. Senior investigator at Animal Cruelty Hotline Australia and Casey resident Barrie Tapp agreed there was no plague in Cranbourne. “I don’t think it’s a plague, just more bites are being reported,” Mr Tapp said. “City people are coming out into rural country areas and there are snakes there and they have got to realise that you have to learn to live with them, just like possums.” Mr Goldsmith said even though his phone has been running hot with calls for help, “I know for a fact it’s not a snake plague, it’s just more people coming into contact with snakes. “Every time grass gets high more rodents come out and they go to houses to find food and the snakes follow them,” he said. Mr Goldsmith advises people to wear long pants if entering areas where there may be snakes to prevent a bad bite and slowly stepping away from a snake if one is nearby.

He caught up with rising star Omar Jasika, who has fond memories of belting balls around the courts of St Paul Aposstle Tennis Club in Endeavour Hills.

Grand Slam smiling strike YOU might once have driven past and caught a glimpse of a talented kid striking balls at St Paul Apostle Tennis Club. That same kid played in front of thousands of spectators at this year’s Australian Open, and is considered a frontline act of Generation Next. Former Endeavour Hills resident Omar Jasika, Nick Kyrgios’ brother from another mother, is on the fast track to greatness – having claimed his maiden grand slam main draw victory last Monday. The 18-year-old wildcard’s 6-4, 3-6, 6-0, 6-4 defeat of world No.76 Illya Marchenko earned him a shot at 2008 Australian Open runner-up Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Jasika’s singles fortnight ended there – under lights on Margaret Court Arena, no less – but he was back on Thursday to partner Kyrgios in the doubles. “Nick is like my big brother. I’ve known him for a while now and we’re pretty tight,” Jasika told the News. “He’s stayed at my house, I’ve stayed at his house before, and we train together and tell each other our deepest secrets. It’s good to have a friendship like that. “We grew up together and have our own inside jokes … Nick’s

something special now; he’s playing some good tennis and he’ll always back me up when he can.” Jasika has fond memories of his days training at St Paul Apostle, the same tennis club that propelled one-time wheelchair tennis No.1 Daniela Di Toro to fame. “There’s one court on the side and I used to train there. It was fun. I had the court by myself and it felt like you could do your own thing and train,” he said. “We just liked the area and we were closer to my grandma and I was able to train. I’ve got a bit better since those days.” Jasika is intent on returning to the Australian Open as a top-100 player, but said improving his physicality and dealing better with the mental toll of long stints on the road were the keys to that. The 2014 US Open junior singles and doubles champion will move inside the top 300 in the men’s rankings this month. “It was definitely the best week of my life and I can’t wait to come back next year – it’s my favourite slam,” Jasika said. “The crowd just made me smile. Every day I couldn’t wait to wake up to play in front of a huge crowd. It was fun, and definitely worth it.”

The Minister for Planning has approved Amendment C161 to the Cardinia Planning Scheme. The Amendment comes into operation on the date this notice is published in the Government Gazette. The Amendment implements the findings of the ‘Cardinia Local Heritage Study Review Volumes 1, 2 and 3 – Sept 2015’ by applying the Heritage Overlay to sites identified as having heritage significance, correcting mapping anomalies, applying Schedule 7 to the Significance Landscape Overlay (SLO4) to 4 Edenmont Road, Emerald, and introduces relevant Incorporated and Reference documents. The Amendment also corrects minor errors in Schedule 1, 2 and 4 of the Environmental Significance Overlay (ESO), Schedule 1, 2 and 3 to the Vegetation Protection Overlay (VPO), Schedule 1, 2 and 3 to the Significant Landscape Overlay (SLO) and the Land Subject to Inundation Overlay (LSIO). The Amendment deletes referral requirements to the Department of Sustainability and Environment from the Schedule to Clause 66.04 to reflect referral requirements as provisioned under the Schedules to the Environmental Significance Overlay. Athlete who didn’t know it By JARROD POTTER REBECCA Henderson was already two-thirds of the way to becoming a triathlete ... she just didn’t know she would become one until last year. Henderson, 14, from Berwick, has been a sensational athlete on land - winning junior national and state titles - as well as in the water - as an open water dynamo who is also making her way in the pool. But on a whim she put together the final piece of the triathlon puzzle as Henderson hopped on the bike and hasn’t stopped starring in her next sporting pursuit. Her talent was spotted pretty quickly - with Triathlon Victoria selecting her for a development program and in only her fifth race, Henderson booked her place on the School Sports Victoria triathlon team. “I only started in May last year - we’d done a few triathlons before, but it was just kind of for fun then we started taking it seriously,” Henderson said. “Someone told us about the trials for the development squad then we went and I got in. “I like that there’s swimming and running together and I like the bike, it’s pretty good now ...

it’s great that there’s the three (sports) and not just one.” She had to go through three try-out races across the state, but with three high-ranking finishes, it was more than enough to book her ticket to the national championships. “There were three of them (SSV tryouts) - they had points and picked the first six,” Henderson said. “I got second in Yarrawonga, then one was in Mordialloc and the other one in Elwood I got second again - so hopefully I can do well at the nationals.” The Berwick College student has got a lot on her sporting plate this year - the Athletics Australia national championships in Perth, plenty of Little Athletics competitions and she’s stepped up her poolside commitments by joining the Casey TigerSharks. That leaves her with a lot of training sessions to endure, but Henderson wouldn’t have it any other way as she prepares for her first School Sports Australia triathlon championships, held at Hervey Bay from 18-21 April. Henderson wanted to thank Keith Colomb, Jess Marshall and Steph Demestichas and her parents for their support of her brand-new sporting passion.

Peter Bruce Ronald, a former president and committeeman of 44 years, was honoured with the racing of the $30,000 P.B. Ronald Memorial Handicap (1200m). Top Me Up, trained by Team Hawkes and ridden by Dwayne Dunn, took out the day’s feature while the Amy Johnstontrained Ballinaclash scored a length win in the $30,000 Cardinia Shire Cup (1400m). It’s an odd spot for most to put their accolades but for Tiffany Eliadis it’s a great reminder of what she’s done and where she still wants to go with her soccer as she drives to her matches or training sessions. After back-to-back Women’s Premier League titles with South Melbourne, Eliadis, 20, from Endeavour Hills, will change course on her career after she joined the newly formed Southern United. While it’s tough to farewell her adopted club after many fruitful seasons, Eliadis felt the time was right to take on another big test - the Women’s National Premier League. “I just wanted a new challenge, to be honest,” Eliadis said. “Staying at South would’ve been the easy option but seeing that the WNPL would be something completely different for women’s football I thought why not be a part of it. “I always like to challenge myself with new things and it’s a club that’s trying to slowly build itself up and before I went to South, they were a bit like that too. “Going to Southern is a little like that and I feel that they’ll boost themselves up and I want to be a part of it, to be honest, on the southeast side.” Joining Southern United alongside SMFC team-mate Saphri Lines and reuniting with her former Row-

ville Sports Academy coach Stuart Munro - Eliadis thinks Southern is set to up the ante with fast-paced, attacking style. “It will definitely be a passing game - won’t be a boot it long and chase kind of thing,” Eliadis said. “The girls will get into the routine of passing and relaxing on the ball and making better decisions - I think that’s what Stuart is trying to implement as well - better decision making and quicker speed of play.” Eliadis encouraged all southeastern soccer girls to head along and try out for Southern United ahead of the inaugural WNPL season. While it’s a daunting prospect to jump up to the top tier in Victoria, Eliadis had the same concerns when she was younger but thought her switch to South Melbourne was the greatest move she ever made. “Take a chance - you won’t know unless you try and you’ve got to take risks to be better,” Eliadis said. “When I was younger I took a risk as a 14-year-old to go play in senior level and it was the best thing I probably ever did. “I even spoke to a few who were trying out for the 18s and told them to come into the seniors and they said that it’s obviously a major difference but you’d only get better if you push yourself.” In the meantime she’ll tick off the kilometres in her purple Mirage waiting for the season to start next month - with her medals as a solid reminder of her capabilities.

Smashing century By DAVID NAGEL PAKENHAM (254) all-rounder Chris Smith (113) has broken new ground in the WGCA Premier Division with another outstanding century against Upper Beaconsfield (0/4) on Saturday. Smith and Maroons’ skipper Scott Pitcher (7/47) waged a two-man war at Upper Beaconsfield, with Smith’s century propelling the ladderleading Lions into a strong position at the close of day one. Smith becomes the first player to score four centuries in a season in the Premier Division which began in 2009 - and he has now scored 11 during that time. He has now made 663 runs for the season and has taken 17 wickets to boot. It makes him a short-priced favourite to take out this year’s top-individual prize, the Terry Stephenson Medal. Pitcher’s leg-spinners have been equally impressive, with his seven-wicket haul taking his wicket tally to a league-leading 35 for the season. The West Gippsland Warriors have not tasted success since 2009, when Kooweerup all-rounder Shane ‘The Great Man’ Dole led the WGCA to the Division 3 title. Clyde’s Kyle Brooke, co vice-captain of this year’s team, would love nothing better than to emulate that success. “You hear stories from 2009 and those players say the feeling was like winning a grand final at their own clubs,” Brooke said. “To play for your league and work your butt off and then come home with the ultimate reward, I can’t think of too many things better than that.” The Warriors take on Colac, Seymour, Warragul and Goulburn Murray but also have to contend with Central Gippsland, Wangaratta and Yarra Valley, who will all be looking to qualify for the Division 3 grand final on Friday 5 February. TOORADIN (5/215) has hoisted its first piece of senior silverware in almost three years after blowing Kooweerup (114) off the park in the WGCA Twenty20 Kookaburra Cup grand final at Toomuc Reserve on Sunday. And the man who held aloft that Premier Division trophy back in 2012/13, Aaron Avery (79 not out off 34 balls), was the star attraction. He put behind him a recent run of outs to produce something extraordinary and claim man-of-the-match honours along the way. The Seagulls now progress through to the region eight finals, where they will represent

the WGCA against the very best from the Mornington Peninsula, Ferntree Gully and Yarra Valley leagues. The end goal for the Seagulls is now the Statewide Twenty20 Cup grand final which will be held in early 2017 at the MCG. Tooradin set the win up with the bat, with Avery, Dan Hunt (47 off 18 balls) and Bradey Welsh (70 not out off 47 balls) taking the early momentum. By EWAN KENNEDY THE Skoda Fabia comes as a hatchback and wagon, interior space is something in which Skoda has specialised for many years. Cargo carrying capacity in this small vehicle is 1125 litres with the rear seat backs folded for the hatch, and 1370 litres for the wagon. Many small to medium SUVs have less usable room. Our test vehicle was Fabia 66TSI manual station wagon with a price of $17,140 plus onroad costs. The hatchback range starts at $15,990 plus on-roads. The third generation Skoda Fabia takes a new direction in overall styling, the hatch is eight millimetres shorter, 90mm wider and 31mm lower than its predecessor. Note that the wagon is a significant 265 millimetres longer than the hatch for increased luggage space. The added width imbues the front with a stronger character, while distinctive sharp, wide headlights, crystalline glass, slatted grille and the brand’s winged arrow on the bonnet’s nose leave no doubt as to the car’s origins. To try and grab buyers with a taste for more than a car in one of 500 shades of grey, Skoda Fabia can be customised inside and out. Six body colours are available, including standard Candy White and Corrida Red; and metallic Race Blue, Magic Black, Quartz Grey and Moon White. A vibrant Sprint Yellow and Rally Green Metallic are available with the Colour Concept. With the Colour Concept option customers can choose between four colours for the roof, including A-pillars and mirror housings - silver, white, black or red. The interior is also offered in an array of colours and combinations. The new Fabia has a Bolero infotainment system has a 6.5inch TFT colour touchscreen. There’s smartphone connectivity via SmartLink as standard. It works with both Apple’s CarPlay and Android Auto software. The second generation of Volkswagen’s Modular Infotainment Matrix (MIM) offers Fabia DAB digital radio (an option that’s part of the $2600 Premium Sports Pack), zoom and swipe smartphone-style operation and Bluetooth connection. A 1.2-litre 66TSI turbo-petrol engine produces 66 kW of power and is mated with a fivespeed manual transmission. The same engine in a higher state of tune is ranked at 81 kW. Tagged the 81TSI engine it’s paired with a seven-speed DSG transmission. Both powerplants have a Euro 6 emission rating. Top torque figures are 160 and 175 Nm respectively, not

Fabia hatch has added to this neutrality. Comfort is good and the body has a rigid feel that bodes well for long life. Some of our test drivers found the three-spoke multifunction leather steering wheel to be overly large. We soon settled into its size and by the end of the week it felt fine. Skoda Fabia comes with a claimed fuel consumption figure of 4.8 litres per 100 kilometres fuel. We had little trouble keeping it under five litres per 100 in motorway running. Country driving was in the five to seven-litre range depending on the terrain. Around town fuel use increased to a still reasonable seven to nine litres per 100 kilometres. A start /stop system and brake energy recuperation are part of the fuel and emission reduction package. We came away from our week with the smart little Skoda Fabia wagon impressed by the quality of finish, solid on-road feel and the semi-sporty handling. For those who need a sensible wagon but don’t feel the need for a macho SUV then the Fabia should be high on their list.

a huge amount of grunt, but it comes in at a pleasingly low 1400 rev on both engines so is very usable. Fabia is fitted standard with the latest technology in Front Assist with the City Emergency Braking function across the range. This uses radar to measure the distance to the vehicle in front. Whenever the distance is too short, Front Assist gives audio and visual warnings - then automatic emergency stopping if the driver still doesn’t do the right thing. There’s a Multi-collision Brake System that reduces the risk of the vehicle becoming involved in a subsequent collision following the initial crash or at least reduces the speed. When the Multi-Collision Brake is activated it automatically turns on the brake lights and hazard lights. The driver can override the system by accelerating or initiating emergency braking. Again, the Czech’s determination to provide good interior space shows through. There’s room for four fullsized adults without the need to compromise overmuch in rear legroom. Three across the back seat will need to be good friends, though. On our usual drive route in city, suburban and country traffic the free-spinning 66 kW TSI motor responded well, taking even steep gradients in its stride thanks to the low-rev grunt provided by the turbocharger. A six-speed manual would be nice, but makers have to keep costs down somehow. Nevertheless we wouldn’t be surprised to see one at the first facelift. Handling is neat and predictable, there’s good steering feel and until you push really hard the dynamics are pretty well neutral.
