A LOCAL sporting group has started the year with a bang as the Noosa Pirates Young Guns prepare to pack their bags for a trip of a lifetime. The group of local boys hope to head to Sydney to visit popular NRL clubs and learn about careers in sport as well as play a match against a similar youth group as part of a special program initiated by the Noosa Pirates last year. The program, which lists hard work and commitment as desired attributes for participants, was started after the local club noticed a significant reduction in the participation of youths in organised sport in general. The Young Guns includes local boys aged between 13 and 17 years who not only learn Rugby League skills but life skills as well. The group’s latest fund-raising effort is in the form of a trivia night to be held on Saturday 23 January, at the Noosa Tewantin RSL from 6.30pm. The club has secured some great prizes for the night’s best know-it-all including a signed Kangaroos jersey, family trip to Fraser Island and a night’s accommodation at a Noosa resort. Violence snub By MEGAN OGLE NOOSA has missed out on much-needed funding for domestic violence victims with the government calling for tenders in areas throughout the state, but ignoring Noosa, where police attend at least one domestic violence incident per day. Acting premier Jackie Trad announced an immediate one-off $1.17m for domestic violence support services, as well as $5.2m over five years for new local sexual assault services. Ms Trad said the funding was aimed at filling gaps in services where there are currently

limited services or none at all; however Noosa has been left behind with no funding allocated to the area. Noosa Heads officer in charge Senior Sergeant Steve McReight said there was rarely a day when officers were not called to at least one DV situation in Noosa Shire and that DV was a high priority with his team. “Domestic violence has always been a priority at any station I’ve been responsible for and I can assure you it’s always been a priority for my staff,” he said. “If someone phones up and says there’s a domestic, our communica-

tion centre always prioritises that as a code two, lights and sirens ... we get cars to the home as soon as we can.” The government will invest nearly $6.4m to boost resources to help victims of domestic violence and sexual assault after a surge in victims accessing helplines. Minister for the Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence Shannon Fentiman said the increased number of domestic and family violence victims taking the brave step to speak out and seek help had put a strain on services. “We’ve seen a heartbreaking start to 2016, with horrific domestic violence incidents and

a big surge in calls to DVConnect,” Ms Fentiman said. “When women make this brave decision to speak out and seek help about abuse, we must make sure we have the right support and services there to help.” If you or anyone you know is affected by domestic or family violence, call DVConnect on 1800 811 811 or phone triple-zero (000) in the case of an emergency. Australia Day holds special significance for a lot of people, few more so locally than Noosa Parks Association secretary and CCIQ Noosa board member Ingrid Jackson, as she explains.

Thoughts on our special day AUSTRALIA Day has a special meaning for me, and as I attend Noosa Council’s largest citizenship ceremony of the year at Noosaville Lions Park on Tuesday 26 January, I’ll have an extra spring in my step. My parents, Libby and Henry, migrated from what is now the Czech Republic to Australia in 1948, my father lecturing in mathematics at the University of Tasmania. I was born in Hobart in 1952 and a couple of years later in June 1954 my parents were naturalised at a ceremony in the Hobart Town Hall. In the photo, which featured on the front page of the Hobart Mercury, you can see the local civic authority dressed in a most un-Noosalike way, towering over the three of us. Hobart was a turning point for my parents. During World War II, Henry, who was half Jewish, had been interned in a labour camp. After the war, as Czechoslovakia steadily fell under Communist control, my parents, not yet together, migrated separately to Hobart where they eventually met and married. They never returned to the Czech Republic. They never wanted to. There were too many bad memories. Eventually, Henry and Libby moved from Hobart to Edmonton in Canada, where my late father became Professor of Mathematics at the University of Alberta. I was educated in Canada, completing my first degree there, and then, under very different circumstances from those which had motivated my parents to migrate, I made my way back to Australia. In the Sydney suburb of Mosman, 30 years after my parents had been naturalised, I became an Australian citizen again at a ceremony in the Mosman Town Hall. That’s me in the middle of the photo. The civic authority was still wearing a wig. And so next Tuesday, with my mother Libby who now also lives in Noosa, I will be at

When the ceremony starts at 9.30am it will be an emotional moment. It always is. I’m not aware of there being any people from the Czech Republic, or Canada, but there will be new citizens from China, Cyprus, Italy,

Japan, Nepal, Senegal, Singapore and the United States. Noosa MP Glen Elmes will address the gathering and then Noosa deputy mayor Bob Abbot will conduct the citizenship formalities. As for me and my mum, we’ll be feeling appreciative that we’re here to observe it

all in a great town in a great country. About 6.6 million Australians, 28 percent of our population, were born overseas. We’ll be thinking of them and what they’ve done and we’ll also be thinking of the first Australians and what they’ve had to endure. Yes, Australia Day is a very special day.

Family’s toughest blow over loss of youngster Benny’s

IT’S been a tough week; I went to the funeral of Mooloolaba Surf club youngster Cole Miller where I sat among 1000 others still in disbelief of what had happened only 10 days earlier. It was quite strange, the service was held in St Steven’s Catholic Church, only five minutes away from the tragedy in Fortitude Valley. Not having children, I can’t imagine what was going through the minds of his family, especially his Dad Steve and Mum Mary-Leigh. Up they got to put flowers on the coffin. Steve then struggled as you would expect with

the eulogy, before his brothers and cousins, as pall bearers, moved the coffin outside. The wake was at City Hall, where the tension lessened as good friends were treated to a relaxed service speaking of the good times Cole had, even if it was for only 18 years. Rugby League Immortal Wally Lewis was present after hosting the Walk against Violence gathering earlier in the week. The king played the game of Rugby League to the highest level, and against some of the hardest men of that era. Shaking his head, he just couldn’t understand why someone or a group would deliberately go out with their main objective to pick a fight. “It just doesn’t make any sense, and what

joy could you get out of king hitting someone, who isn’t looking?” he said. There was a lady in the room who was on a mission – she introduced herself to Cole Miller’s mother explaining her son was hit earlier in the evening by the same pair. She went to the funeral and wake, just to lend support to the Millers, knowing how lucky she was. It could have been her son’s service. Having been involved in boxing for most of my life, I clearly understand the pros and cons of the sport. There is nothing wrong with self-defence or fitness, or certainly having a couple of fights in the ring. It’s a great sport, and think of the Australian heroes boxing has produced over the past 100 years; Les Darcy, Jimmy Carruthers, Jeff Fenech, Jeff Harding, Daniel Geale or

Tony Mundine. Or my favorites Snowny Baker, Johnny Famechon and the greatest story of them all Lionel Rose. Every one of these men did it the hard way – training and struggling but chasing a dream that one day they would live. It may have been only short but what a ride and they have all left their mark on our national sporting canvas. But the big difference here, all these guys stood in front of their opponent and traded blows, punch for punch. Danny Green has been banging the drum of One Punch Can Kill, but it seems to be falling on deaf ears. We are seeing it far too often, it has to stop, hopefully the two men accused of this recent action will be made accountable. I, for one, understand if you do something wrong, you do the time. Eyes on the river COUNCIL has its sights set on management of the Noosa River after the community jury recommended the State Government hand over control. Some 18 of the 24 community jury members recommended council seek control of mooring, anchoring, live-aboards and commercial leases after it was agreed that the state wasn’t up to the job. Mayor Noel Playford said council welcomed the advice and would raise the issue with the state. “Government officials admit they haven’t the budget to manage the river effectively so we are likely to see a better result if we take on some of the responsibility,” Cr Playford said. “Council and the State Govern-

ment have been looking for ways to work together to tackle various issues relating to the river and they’ve told us they’re open to us taking over some of their management tasks.” The recommendation by the jury comes after growing concerns about abandoned and derelict vessels, effluent pollution from boats, commercial leases and other issues. Council voted to use 12 further recommendations, which the jury reached consensus on, in drafting a detailed management strategy for the river. The recommendations include use of a river ranger, use of legal channels to rid the river of abandoned, derelict and unsafe vessels and a review of mooring fees.

By MEGAN OGLE THE call is on again for men and women of all ages to join together and dance to raise awareness of violence against women. After a successful 2015 event which saw 200 dancers join a global phenomenon, the Noosa One Billion Rising event is on again this Valentine’s Day. The Noosa event is part of a global movement known as One Billion Rising which includes over 207 countries who join together to perform a single dance routine in a show of unity against violence. Local One Billion Rising organiser Peppie Simpson said this year was set to be bigger than ever and was hoping to raise more valuable funds for local women and their families affected by domestic violence. “Last year we raised over $1000 for our local women’s shelter and this year we intend to support the local Salvation Army’s Shine program again. The event is so positive and powerful and we’d love more people to join us again this year,” she said. Peppie said the event was open to everyone with no prior dance experience required only a willingness to take part and have fun. “We have scheduled some free rehearsals over the next few weeks to help people feel comfortable with the steps; although it is not about how well

It’s about coming together as a community and making a stand against violence.” Dancers are asked to wear red, black and white for the performance and spectators are encouraged to come along and lend their support. TWO council candidates have road rage after a bumper holiday season in Noosa saw gridlock along Noosa’s popular streets. Council hopefuls Ingrid Jackson and Mark Rodriquez both agree more needs to be done to ensure Noosa roads are sustainable for the continued influx of tourists over holiday seasons. In a letter to the editor published on 7 January Ms Jackson said congestion along Reef Street from the Weyba Road roundabout to the Eenie Creek Road roundabout was the worst she had ever seen. “It’s peak visitor time here, of course, and some key roads are bottlenecking under the strain,” she said. “But I get the feeling I may have had a brief glimpse of the future unless some of these issues are addressed soon.” Mr Rodriquez, who announced his candidacy last week, agrees with Ms Jackson and said he had also witnessed significant congestion over the holiday season. “What I also saw was congestion all the way from the Junction bus station down to Hastings Street and all the way in from the RACV resort, not to mention the usual holiday car park along

Noosa Parade,” he said. “This is the worst I have seen here in 12 years.” Mr Rodriquez said locals and tourists alike needed to take more advantage of the free bus service and the new transport strategy needs to address this issue. “What is interesting to note here is that there were free buses during this period and there were also ample parking spaces still available in the Junction,” he said. “Our new transport strategy needs to look at why people insist on driving down to Hastings Street, what more we can do in the way of encouraging people to park and ride or take taxis or buses, what measures we can take to improve traffic flows and our overall car parking capacity.” Noosa Council has invited community members to have their say about ways to improve on the current public and private transport networks. He’s the koala’s best mate COUNCIL hopeful Jess Glasgow has his sights set on Noosa’s troubled koalas. Mr Glasgow, along with a small group of Noosa residents, have joined together to form The Koalas in Noosa Foundation. The new group aims to ultimately turn an area of Noosa North Shore, which is currently inhabited by koalas, into a conservation area where rehabilitated koalas are able to be released. Mr Glasgow said the land across the river from Gympie Terrace in Noosaville was ideal for koalas, due to minimal traffic and the council’s efforts to curb the wild dog population. The group aims to continue its consultation with other

groups in the area such as The Koala Foundation to find ways to boost the koala population in Noosa. “Our aim is to not only protect and maintain the health and well-being of the existing koala population in Noosa Shire, but to hopefully, over time, increase the numbers,” Mr Glasgow said. “Our vision for the future is to promote population growth by enhancing and expanding ideal conditions. Campaign sets sail LOCAL sailor and council hopeful Elaine Williams launched her election campaign on Wednesday (13 January) off the shoreline and into the Noosa River. A keen sailor and a member of the Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club sailing committee, Ms Williams said she was looking forward to continuing the hard work of the current Noosa Council and excited to work on issues close to her heart. “I’m really keen to continue the hard work the current council has done

since deamalgamation, but there’s still a lot to be done, and a lot of the outstanding work, particularly the river, are all things I’m really passionate about and have a lot of knowledge about and have been involved with for many years,” she said. Ms Williams is one of three women fighting for a position in the council elections to be held in March and said she hoped to bring balance to the traditional male leadership, decision-making and problem-solving approaches.

Masters plan for Wellington By MEGAN OGLE WOOLWORTHS’ decision to dump its Masters home improvement business has been welcomed by Noosa mayoral candidate Tony Wellington. Cr Wellington said the decision for Woolworths and its American partner Lowes to sell off the troubled home improvement chain was “good news” for local businesses that were often threatened by big box retailers. “Hopefully the land will be sold to someone who can value-add to the local economy rather than diminish it,” he said. “The proposal was partly in conflict with the land zoning, but the bigger argument for refusal was the potential impact of a Masters store on the local economy and local businesses. “Not only do (large companies) bleed the local economy, they also tend to kill existing locally-owned small businesses. My aim has always been to protect the local economy and the small businesses that are its backbone.” Cr Wellington’s comments come after a recent decision by councillors to reject an ap-

plication for a locally-owned chicken farm business development on rural land that was recommended for approval by council staff. Cr Wellington said while he was supportive of development that met the requirements of the Noosa planning scheme, he would not support development that “adversely affects residents”. “My motion of refusal noted the proposal presented a range of problems that either conflicted with planning outcomes or impacted on the amenity of surrounding residents,” he said. A total of 18 appeals against Noosa Council planning decisions have now been lodged with the Planning and Environment Courts since January 2014, but Cr Wellington said the number was not cause for concern. “It is not unusual for developer to challenge decisions by council,” he said. “In the past, Noosa has been faced with far more legal battles than it currently faces. "Following the 1997 planning scheme, for example, Noosa Council was subject to over $100 million in compensation claims.”

Cr Wellington said for Noosa to be a leader in sustainability, tourism and business creativity, it needed to continue to have the “courage of its convictions”. “There is a common misconception that Noosa Council obstructs development,” he said. “That is totally untrue. Indeed, 99 per cent of all development applications to Noosa Council are approved. It’s only the very occasional, high-profile situation such as Masters that ends up being reported in the local press.” Cr Wellington said he is “all in favour” of local development and “consistently supports development where it meets the requirements of our planning scheme”. “But I will stand up for residents when I believe the lifestyle they came here to enjoy is being unnecessarily compromised,” he said. Cr Wellington said if he was elected as mayor in the next council elections in March this year, he expected the new council to make “similar sorts of planning decisions to those that have been made over the past two years”.

Join in fight against litter THE Noosa Community Biosphere Association is calling on local residents to protect the biosphere and unite in the fight against litter. NCBA vice-president John Wood has invited locals to join him and other local environmental groups at Noosa Main Beach this Sunday to show their support of a ban on plastic bags in Noosa and the introduction of a container deposit scheme in Queensland. “A ban on plastic bags and a cash for containers scheme would help significantly reduce the amount of plastic bags and litter found on our streets and footpaths, in our parks and our waterways while protecting out native noosa.starcommunity.com.au

Local Green candidate and council hopeful Aaron White said he supported both campaigns and the ban on plastic bags was something for the council to action. “Although I fully endorse

Noosa’s 'ban the plastic bag’ campaign, supported by Noosa Council and the Noosa Community Biosphere Association, I believe a container deposit scheme for all of Queensland is just as important,” he said. “Considering the heavy use of plastic containers by our tourists in particular and the sad lack of available water refilling stations, perhaps Noosa Council should be taking more of a lead on this.” Mr White will be joining Mr Wood and other groups this Sunday 24 January at 9.45am on the Noosa Main Beach and again at 11.30am along the Noosa River, Gympie Terrace in a show of support for the two initiatives.

Fields of Flavour is a successful initiative launched by Cricket Australia after fans asked for more variety in food available at the venues during the series. “I was approached in November by Cricket Australia after they and the players recognised the fans and what they wanted,” Peter said. “Fans are often quite limited in their food options at major sporting events, so to offer something new and increase the range on offer is quite exciting." Fans can feast on flavours from around the world including Indian, Vietnamese and Mexican from small pop-up restaurants which are quick to serve and eager to please. Peter is coming away with the highest score after a successful debut at Perth’s WACA which saw a variety of restaurants pop up in the grounds and offer a wide choice of yummy foods. The MCG hosted the second round of restaurants on Sunday (17 January) with five restaurants offering street food to hungry fans and live music played throughout the day to create a festival atmosphere. FOR the boxing fraternity the holidays are over and now for the next couple of weeks the hard physical grind to get rid of those Christmas kilos has commenced. Monday evening saw both local amateur boxing clubs, Noosa Box Office (NBO) run by coach and trainer Israel Kani and Impact Boxing Academy at Cooroy run by Mark Evans open their doors for the 2016 season. For the members of the Impact Academy the start to the season could not have been better. First was the news that Sam Cameron-Hands, the 16-year-old boxer from Cooroy who last year represented Australia at an international tournament in St Petersburg, Russia, has been invited back to Russia to again represent his country. Then along with this came the really big news. Owner and coach of Impact, Mark Evans has been named Australiaâ€™s Head Coach by Boxing Australia, for this major international tournament. Add to this, Mark will also this year, be performing the duties of Queensland Talent Identification Coach; a job which will involve monitoring and working with a team of some 25 selected fighters from all over the state. "To do this, we will bring the fighters together for three or four camps a year. A big job but necessary," Mark said. Last year a major boxing semi-

Hosted by Israel Kani, Noosa Box Office Boxing Club, it was attended by fighters from all over the state and proved a major success. This time for Sam CameronHands as a member of a seven-man team he will be taking part in an Invitation International Tournament to be held in the coastal town of Anapa. Apart from having some 40 kilometres of sandy beaches, Anapa with a population of some 70,000 is renowned throughout as being "the

most comfortable family resort in Russia". The tournament which runs from 11 to 16 March will be attended by 20 countries. Not to be outdone, Samâ€™s young brother Ben is also aiming for a trip to Russia to box in the Junior Olympics to be held in September. But to do so he has to first win the Australian title for his division. This is not beyond his reach as he has won Australian titles previously. Following this, Russia will again host another major tournament,

when in November they will stage the World Youth Championships. To contest this event big brother Sam, who is now in the Youth Division, must first also win the Australian title. With their dedication to the sport and the total support of parents David and Denise plus good coaching anything is possible for these polite young men. But it is not only the boys that are the achievers in Cooroy, for the pretty young lady Taylah Robinson

has already represented her country in the Philippines, and is definitely one to watch in the future. Another major factor in not only Impact but also NBO, is the attitude of all those involved. In a sport that is so demanding, a feeling of discipline and friendship is a must - and happy to relate this feeling exists in both clubs. The results that have achieved by both male and female boxers speak for themselves. NBO coach Kani said: â€œFor the first couple of weeks regarding boxing we concentrate on fitness; then when the body is starting to move better some will start sparring. At present it looks like we will have a team of some 18 fighters and all indications are that this year, we will see tournaments anywhere from Townsville to outer Brisbane. It is going to be a very busy and productive yearâ€?. For Kani, who last year also had fighters travelling overseas to both Germany and China, more success is assured. Apart from boxing, the NBO also runs large fitness classes. If the size and success of last year's sessions are any indication, it will be indeed a very busy year for Kani and staff. After a very successful career in both amateur and professional boxing, Israel Kani is definitely a man whose opinion and methods are also to be respected. The boxing youth in our community are in good hands. With little or no publicity for amateur boxing in Queensland, athletes and coaches who have achieved honors usually go unnoticed. But not in our community, for we take pride in our people.

Art in the open DESPITE the heat and humidity of last Friday, over 150 people representing local Noosa region tourism, government, business, media, events and the arts community came together to officially launch the newest player on Noosa’s events calendar, Noosa Open Studios. With the theme of Wearable Art, MC and Noosa councillor Frank Wilkie was in his element posing as a French artist complete with beret and a handsome moustache on his normally clean-shaven smiling face. Thirty artists, sculptors and other artisans will be opening their studios to the public from Friday 19 to Sunday 21 August. The central hub for the event will be Wallace House in Noosaville where art and creative works and interviews with participating artists will be on view. Good read THE Biosphere; it was good to read Bob Jarvis’s letter entitled ‘What Biosphere Benefit?’ in Noosa Today dated 7 January. I also have much the same questions to ask the Mayor Noel Playford, Dr Michael Gloster, and would-be Mayor Tony Wellington. As I understand it, the Noosa Shire Council originally had to make a presentation in Paris, to gain worldwide recognition for Noosa to be a biosphere. Now, after nine years’ biosphere status, what I would really like to know is how much it has cost Noosa ratepayers in total to keep the biosphere status going and to pay the six experts assigned to manage the biosphere foundation? Also, how much it has cost Noosa ratepayers for the use of council offices at Doonella House? And finally, what biosphere benefits do local residents get for the hundreds of thousands of dollars that have been poured into maintaining the biosphere status? Dirty tricks THE Noosa Council area is engaged in an election campaign for the local level of government. The Noosa community is blessed with and relies upon a discerning, competitive local press for much of its information about this campaign and about issues of local importance. It is imperative that the community can have faith in the fairness, accuracy, balance and integrity of what appears on its pages. Accordingly, it is incumbent on that press to be ruthless in ensuring that the letters to the editor are not written by “phantoms” drawn from the candidates’ campaign teams masquerading as thoughtful members of the community. The track record so far this campaign is not good with Juanita Deharo, Hubert Gibson, Janet Simpson and Gary Bain being printed but who may not be real people. It is unfortunate to see G. Bain reincarnated after a six year lay-off as an anonymous attack dog. Those who believe in the importance of local government, the level of government which is most intimate with electors, wish to see a positive campaign of ideas relevant for our community and its future well-being from which to choose. In Phil’s defence I WRITE to defend Phil Jarratt from the attack on his professionalism from John Lobb and Michael Hill (Noosa Today, 14 January). The photograph of the summary execution of Nguyen Van Lem by the Saigon chief of police is graphic and disturbing. It is also an awardwinning press photograph, often published since 1968, that challenged Australians’ thinking about the Vietnam conflict, and if it was in fact a just cause. A later equally famous image of a burned and distressed Kim Phuc fleeing an American napalm assault provoked further thought and discussion around the globe. Phil Jarratt used the photograph in context, to accompany an article about Pat Burgess junior, son of Australia’s most acclaimed Vietnam War correspondent. I am a history teacher at a local high school, and Mr Lobb and Mr Hill need to know that the photograph about which they complain is published in most school history textbooks. Phil Jarratt owes no apology. Recently, a heart-breaking photograph of three-year-old Syrian toddler Aylan Kurdi, drowned in the Aegean sea off Turkey saddened us all but drew our attention to the plight of Syrian refugees fleeing a horrible war. Sometimes, we have to embrace unpalatable truths, and guide our children to understand that all our efforts must focus on putting an end to such suffering and wrongdoing in the world. There is quite a difference between a prospective councillor who might be a member of the NPA, or the local football club which is an incorporated association, and a member of a registered political party standing for their party to represent us. Those joining a political party follow the party rules and they do not stray from the party line, and this is what they will be doing in council. Second as a long-time member of the NPA I can assure Mr Gibson that the NPA is not a political party, it is an incorporated association which acts within the guidelines of the Queensland Incorporated Association Act 1981. Certainly members of the NPA as well as members of other incorporated associations such as the chamber of commerce, Noosa Bridge Club, NRRA etc have every right to stand as independent candidates for council, state and federal elections. I think when the list of candidates for our council elections comes out Mr Gibson will find many of the people putting their names forward are members of the many incorporated associations located in the Noosa Shire. A little bit naked THE part of beach on the south end of A-Bay wanted for clothing optional use is about 250m long by 50m wide, less than 10 per cent of the total beach. The prudish people opposed to a clothing optional beach, including Peter Wellington are ignorant if they think there is something innately wrong with skinny dipping or nude sunbathing. Claims from the Australian Sex Party are polarising and damaging the dialogue, as is the grandstanding from the owner of the nudist retreat in Doonan. Some tourists may enjoy visiting A-Bay as a clothing optional beach but it’s silly to argue this activity will boost the economy. The numerous local naturalists who frequent A-Bay do not condone inappropriate behaviour at the beach or anywhere else; they simply want to be allowed to sunbathe and swim in the nude, away from the crowded beaches and without being hassled by one overzealous policeman on a personal crusade. We have fantastic surfing, very safe ocean swimming (not bothered by sharks or stingers) kite surfing, skis, sailing, boating and fishing plus the whales and dolphins. He’s spot on REGARDING the letter “Not That Hard“ from Michael Fairbairn (14 January); his comments regarding turning left from the right lanes on the Eenie Creek and Reef Street roundabouts are spot on. The current situation is a disaster waiting to happen. Several years ago I witnessed a minor accident (which could have been much worse) from two vehicles crossing over and colliding. I wrote to the relevant authority with some suggestions but heard nothing and the problem continues. In defence of CO2 CONTRARY to what Chris Hindmarsh believes life as we know it would not exist on Earth without CO2. The recent increase in CO2 has been most welcomed by plants resulting in a greening of the Earth. Plants need CO2 and water to produce our food and oxygen. The greenhouse effect is a hypothesis presented as a fact by climate alarmists to demonise CO2. There is no law of physics called the greenhouse effect. It was refuted by the work of R.W. Wood in 1909. Greenhouses heat by preventing the movement of air not by “trapping” radiation. What happens to the temperature inside a car parked in the sun when the windows are left partially open? CO2 does not “trap” heat. It interacts with some infrared radiation. The oceans are heated by the visible radiation from the sun and also by marine volcanism. The oceans are virtually opaque to infrared radiation. There is no evidence to show radiation from CO2 heats water. Water is continually evaporating from the ocean surface. This is a cooling process. The claims by alarmists that the “hottest” years on record are some sort of proof of CO2 and global warming are absurd. The Junction Twilight Markets are back again.

Twilight can be yummy NOOSA Junction Twilight Markets are back again this year and set to shine brighter than ever. The third night-time market is on this Friday, 22 January on Arcadia Street between 5pm and 9pm with bumper crowds of locals and tourists expected. Noosa Junction Association (NJA) president Carole Tretheway said the markets were a celebration of the laid-back Junction vibe and friendly locals with positive feedback from visitors. “We’re calling it a fusion of

fun, funk, fashion and folk and the positive feedback we’ve had so far from everyone involved has been incredible,” she said. Ms Tretheway said she hoped to make the Noosa Junction Twilight Market a permanent feature on the local calendar each month as the market grew in popularity. “In just two markets we’ve grown in size, spilling out of Arcadia Street and into Sunshine Beach Road and Lanyana Way,” she said. According to Ms Tretheway there’s still plenty of room to grow

as she calls for local buskers and artists who want to gain exposure to the community and praises local businesses who have embraced the markets. “People have a chance to grow and share their creative works and local businesses have got into the Twilight spirit too, opening longer hours and taking part in the night. Arts future in their hands THE Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre (BFAC) is back in the hands of the community as the Cooroy Future Group (CFG) gets set to host a bumper year of art. From 1 January, management of the BFAC has returned to the community under the guidance of the CFG for a 12-month trial. CFG president Tex Pipke said he was excited about the coming year, which was set to be a positive one with the addition of two new staff members, exhibitions co-ordinator Cathy Money and assistant exhibition co-ordinator Rachel Bevan. “Both are known to many people,

including artists in Cooroy, the Noosa area and indeed throughout the Sunshine Coast. They have been busy planning and programming a schedule for the year, and our first exhibition opened on Friday 8 January,” he said. This exhibition includes a joint showing of stunning artworks for sale by two highly respected local artists, Kym Barrett and Kim Schoenberger. LETTERS it’s time TIME is getting closer for the election of councillors for Noosa Council, therefore it would be a great start to hear some statements from the general community who live here and want to have a say. Let’s create a council that supports the community with entrepreneurial ideas and plans. Have a meeting place where like-minded people can get together on a weekly basis and discuss Noosa’s advancements and find out what the locals really want and how we can work together as a community to showcase the little people’s ideas and concerns. Let’s put an action plan in place for the drunk and disorderly behaviour - creating a safe haven for the youths where they can go let off steam and not offend anyone (ask the youths what they want, don’t just assume) e.g. possibly an adrenalin pumping space - arcade games area, racetrack, etc. Small businesses that have great ideas or plans pay a small fee upfront (following strict guidelines of course) and have the rest in the rear to actually give them a chance at success! If they don’t

$62,500 question COUNCIL’S experiment with New Democracy’s Community Jury cost an average of $62,500 for each project (report to general committee) and yet neither was able to provide a conclusive result for organic waste management or Noosa River regulation. The premise of expecting 24 randomly selected residents to solve a complex problem within a set time is unrealistic and as shown, impractical. All things considered, many believe this program is unviable. Funds help clubs get in the game NOOSA sporting clubs are kicking goals after receiving a recent funding boost from the Queensland Government. The Noosa District Rugby Union Club, the Noosa District Netball Association and the Noosa Outrigger Canoe Club have received a total of $115,000 under the Get in the Game program. Member for Noosa Glen Elmes said the funding granted to the clubs is great news for all sporting and recreational organisations who apply for grants under this program. “The Noosa community is well represented by a diverse range of sporting and recreation clubs and I am delighted to see local residents benefit directly from the efforts by local groups who, with the assistance of financial support, are able to continue their valuable work in advancing their clubs’ services” he said. Mr Elmes said the grants scheme recognised and supported the great work being done by community organisations on behalf of residents. “These grants provide much needed support to local organisations to enable them to deliver additional activities, assistance with participation fees and upgrades to facilities. These not-for-profit organisations do an amazing job and it is very pleasing to see them being able to offer improved participation opportunities in our community.”

saw the Under 13 girls bring home silver in the relay while the boys picked up silver and bronze in the Under 13 sprints and flags. Noosa Nippers were also represented at Saturday’s Alexandra Heads Carnival where Lilly Tindal came third in the Under 14 Branch Champion Lifesaver.

Back home at Noosa Main Beach on Sunday, the calm conditions and small waves made for great training conditions for all Nippers despite the grey skies and occasional showers. Nippers have the Club Championships next week and age managers were reporting great

strides forward at all levels. Under 8 to Under 10 parents kept the barbecue firing from the early hours to feed friends and visitors and raise much needed funds for the club. Thanks to all who choose to support Noosa Nippers by enjoying the tasty breakfast fare on offer each week.

Noosa softballers in state team NOOSA will be well-presented at the National Softball Titles which are being held in Sydney and Redlands this week. Four Under 15 players and one Under 19 player are representing Queensland after a tough year of training three to four times a week plus never missing a game. Over summer the boys, Riley, Dylan, Charles, Shinae and Luke, amped up the training with four to five sessions a week and additional training in Brisbane for some team mates. The 18-year-old scored a 18.30 to 11.16 win over Hawaii’s defending world champion Mahina Maeda in clean one-metre waves at the Ribeira d’Ilhas point break, after a long wait while storm surf ripped the heart out of Portugal’s wild Atlantic coast. JUST when you think you’ve had about as much cricket as you can take for one holiday season, along comes a thriller like the Hobart Hurricanes going down to the Adelaide Strikers on the last ball of the Big Bash fixture the other night. As a cricket purist it’s taken me a while to come around to the Big Bash, and I still sometimes cringe at the off-field antics, but the season-ending performance of the Hurricanes in Adelaide was nail-biting stuff for more reasons than you could imagine. Back in the 1980s Sydney grade cricketer Alex Milenko and wife Susie bought the house next door to ours on the northern beaches peninsula, their two baby children became buddies to ours and our two families became firm friends. Later, we moved to Noosa and they moved to the Byron region where their business, Private Life, thrived, and the children grew up healthy and athletic. Particularly young Simon, who soon became an outstanding junior cricketer in Lismore under the tutelage of Adam Gilchrist’s dad. OK, roll forward to the brash commercialism of the Big Bash, where every young cricketer knows he can smash his way to success or disappear off the radar, all in the twinkling of an eye. Simon Milenko had a couple of games with the Brisbane Heat last season without attracting much attention, then a move to Hobart this season saw him on the bench while his team foundered. Called in for the last prelim game as a replacement for West Indian Darren Sammy, Simon got the Hurricanes back in the match with an inspired spell of bowling at the death, taking 3/25. For a moment it looked like Simon could get his boys home. Alex and I were madly texting each other – go Simon go! And then some one who looks like Errol Flynn but is apparently the son of the Australian coach had the

AFTER a festive season of pumping surf on the Gold Coast and Byron region but very little on offer here, it comes as something of a slap in the kisser that the wave feast in the Pacific has continued through mid-January. Ah well, our day will come ... and soon. Meanwhile, it all became too much for Noosa-based filmer Greg Huglin, who checked the swell maps very carefully and shot off to Hawaii in time for last week’s sensational Peahi (Jaws) swell. As the north shores of Oahu and Maui were pummelled with monster clean lines from the North Pacific, the Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau, which has not been held in several years, went on amber alert, but while conditions once again proved not suitable there (are they trying to save their marketing budget?), across the strait Peahi was going sick for the second time this season. Huglin, who, along with Australia’s Tim Bonython, has been one of the world’s very best big wave shooters for decades (check Shark Park, among many others), has spent the past couple of years settling into the Noosa lifestyle with partner Andrea and children Jasmine and Josh, and filming locally with surfers like Matt Cuddihy, Sam Crookshanks and Harrison Roach, capturing superb images with his Red Epic camera. But, as much as I know he loves shooting waist-high cruising, Huggie was overdue for some big boy action. Well, he sure got that. The surf break properly known as Peahi but more commonly as Jaws, sits off the rugged northern coastline of the beautiful island of Maui, and is best viewed from a clifftop, where Greg set up his camera last week, surrounded by old filmer buddies and a portable barbecue, and apparently captured some truly epic images on his Epic. I say “apparently” because all I’ve seen thus far are a few “screencaps” posted on social media, but if this doesn’t whet the appetite, I don’t know what will. The image is of one of my favourite big wave riders, the extraordinary Shane Dorian, from the Big Island of Hawaii, shot by my friend of 40 years, the extraordinary Greg Huglin, of Noosa Waters.

Spoilt for choice By JACK MANGROVE WITH a change in the weather late last week, things were a little quieter, prior to that anglers were spoilt for choice with the offshore scene really firing. The closer reefs were going off with Sunshine Reef one of the main targets. Pelagics were on everybody’s mind and most anglers were able to find the fish. Spotted mackerel – and their larger cousins spanish – were hitting the decks as well as tuna and wahoo. The odd dolphin fish also got the reels screaming with a couple of decent fish taken. North Reef was also firing with bottom dweller like sweetlip mori cod and snapper all finding their way onto the hook. Micro Jigging has again been a popular way to target the bottom species, Palm Slow Blatts in the oval shape have been doing a lot of the damage, 30-40g is the size to go for. Out wide, the Barwon Banks and the Hards have also produced some outstanding fish, with large pearl perch, snapper and cobia taken. Jacks have again been on the minds of most river anglers, with the warmer days and the evening run out tide night time has been the perfect time to plan an attack. Structure is the key, so the pontoons around the sound is a great place to start. For those of you with a boat the upper reaches of the river “be-

WELL it’s over for another year. The annual training event for our 13/14-year-old Sunshine Coast lifesavers, known as Camp Commando is over and the feedback is very positive. Organised and run as a joint venture by Surf Life Saving and Australian Defence Force it was attended by clubs from Rainbow Beach to Redcliffe with a representation of four to five members per club, the future of our organisation is definitely being addressed. Among those in attendance were 45 team leaders whose job was not only to assist in running the day's events, but also take the opportunity to reassess their own capabilities in the area of leadership. One such young man was 16-year-

old Archie Glassock from Noosa. A veteran of several previous camps Archie said, “It was a great experience for the youth as it taught them to embrace lifesaving as a whole and most important to look at all avenues of their work as life savers. It also gave us the chance to reassess our capabilities as mentors and leaders.” Going from 6am till 10pm, it was a long day. One of the highlights was the chance for our youth to compare the difference between some training methods used by the ADF and us, for there are many similarities in problems that can confront both groups. It has definitely been a great season for our local iron women Jordan Mercer and Kirsty Higginson. Coached by Darren Mercer, himself an Australian Iron Man legend, these young competitors are what competition is all about. On Saturday at North Cronulla Beach, Sydney, Round 6 of the Kellogg’s Nutri Grain Iron Woman saw Kirsty finish in first place and Jordan

second; an incredible result for the girls and the coach. On the Sunday, following the results of the races, the overall top three places for the series were announced. In first place was Jordan Mercer of Noosa and second was good friend and club mate Kirsty Higginson, third was Brodie Moir. Not only was this result unique for a club, but it is the first time in the history of this event that a father and daughter have won the Nutri Grain Series. Another good result for Noosa was Jack Moyes finishing 10th in the men's series. For this young man who is virtually a Nutri Grain novice, his performance was also outstanding. And what does all this say for Noosa Head Coach Darren Mercer? Incredible! Now four days later the cheering has stopped, the interviews are over and many thousands of words have been written. To me, a major component in their success has been something that despite getting little or no

attention from various branches of the media has been of the utmost importance. And that is the Mercer and Higginson families. Both families are similar in their attitude; quiet, totally supportive and united. They also have the ability to keep both feet on the ground and above all, possess the character to take the good with the bad and with the utmost dignity. On the edge of our community in Cudgerie Estate, there is a family whose domain is amateur boxing. Despite the two sports being poles apart the attitude and end results for this family is similar. The family name is Cameron-Hands and their two sons Sam, 16 and Ben, 14, despite their youth, has already won several Australian championships. I have had the privilege of meeting all three families and have no doubt that the success of their children is, in no small way, due to the character of these people. Champs bring home gold THE Sunshine Coast's best lifesavers gathered last weekend at Alexandra Headlands Surf Club to contest the Sunshine Coast Champion Lifesaver and Patrol Teams competitions. With a mix of disciplines including physical challenges such as surf swimming, board and tube races and board rescues, mixed in with resuscitation and theory components, these events highlight the individuals and teams who are not only proficient surf sport athletes, but also can remain calm under pressure and react accordingly in a surf rescue situation. Sunshine Beach SLSC fielded a small but powerful team who came away with gold and bronze medals in both the hotly contested Under 14 and Under 15 age group Champion Lifesaver events, and also won Gold in the Under 15 and Bronze in the Under 17 Patrol Competition.
